Transcript
- 0:00It's bonus time. Here we go.
- 0:02This month in February of 2025, we are doing a podcast about
- 0:06podcast. We want to introduce you to
- 0:08other track and field themed podcasts that are out there that
- 0:11might be great for your listening pleasure.
- 0:14So all month we're introducing a new podcast each and every day,
- 0:17showing you who they are, what they are, how they are, why they
- 0:20got started and even their favorite episodes and most
- 0:23popular. And hopefully this adds to your
- 0:26podcast listening library. So here we go.
- 0:28Let's get started with today's podcast about podcast.
- 0:32All right, let's jump right into it.
- 0:34Why don't you start advertising? Don't advertise, but that's what
- 0:37this whole thing is. How about introduce yourself
- 0:40kind of a 30,000 foot level 30 second version of who you are
- 0:44and what your relationship is to this great sport, and then give
- 0:46us the name of the podcast that we're talking about today all.
- 0:49Right. First off, Mike, I want to say
- 0:51thank you so much for having me on.
- 0:53But yeah, so my name is David Maris.
- 0:56As you may guess, I'm not American so I live over here in
- 1:00the States. I live in Texas but grew up in
- 1:03the UK, moved from the UK to Dubai and then moved over to the
- 1:06US in 2018. So I was am was a very mediocre
- 1:13athlete. I still try and do a little bit
- 1:14of master's track, but hugely passionate about it and did a
- 1:20brief stint of college coaching at a small Division Three school
- 1:23down here in Houston at University of Saint Thomas.
- 1:26But being like an avid listener, an avid follower of of all your
- 1:30stuff of the sport in general and sprinting is my passion.
- 1:34So I've been really fortunate to kind of like network with some
- 1:37elite Sprint coaches, some elite athletes and yeah, it's kind of
- 1:41really, really involved with that.
- 1:43So yeah, that's kind of a little bit about me and my involvement
- 1:45in track and field I love. It and what's the name of our
- 1:48podcast that we're talking about today?
- 1:50So my podcast very imaginatively is called the Marist Sprint
- 1:53Podcast. I love that.
- 1:56Where'd that come from? Oh, OK, wait a minute.
- 1:58We can kind of guess that one. I love that.
- 1:59What are you on the Maris Sprint Podcast here?
- 2:02And maybe it's all right there in the name.
- 2:04And I do actually love that. What what are you actually
- 2:06focusing on in the podcast? Is it training?
- 2:09Is it interviewing? What's the style that you use as
- 2:11far as solo podcast, etcetera? What are we going for here when
- 2:14we listen to the Maris Sprint Podcast?
- 2:17Yeah. So it's an interview and it's
- 2:20typically with sprinters, you know, occasionally it's all from
- 2:22like the speed and power domain. So I might have a long jumper in
- 2:25there, for example. But we were chatting about their
- 2:28essentially, I guess their part in their path into elite
- 2:31performance. So might be how they got
- 2:34involved in the sport and kind of how they prepare sort of from
- 2:37a training standpoint predominantly.
- 2:39But we touched on other lifestyle factors, you know,
- 2:41things that they might do in terms of with their nutrition,
- 2:43their sleep, their recovery, that kind of thing.
- 2:44And you know how they get set up to perform at the level at which
- 2:47they do. And what's our average length?
- 2:50I know they can sometimes vary, you know, as far as the min and
- 2:52the Max. But what's our average length?
- 2:54Yeah, it does vary. I'd say probably just over an
- 2:58hour is probably an average is probably an average episode.
- 3:01Yeah, love that. And why did when you go back and
- 3:04tell us when you started, but when you go back and think about
- 3:06when you started the podcast, you had some kind of motivation
- 3:09where it was whether to educate others, educate yourself, put
- 3:12other people on a pedestal. What what was kind of the when
- 3:15did you start and what was the motivation for starting the
- 3:17podcast? Yeah, so the podcast came out,
- 3:20it was about two years ago, I think it was just before
- 3:22Christmas in 2022. And the 1st guest I had was
- 3:26Ronnie Baker. So, and I think I started it
- 3:31because I think I didn't really see anybody kind of chatting to
- 3:34the athletes about what they did from a training, from a training
- 3:37perspective. There was one guy actually out
- 3:40in Germany, a guy called Benjamin Brock.
- 3:42I apologize if I put you the pronunciation of his of his last
- 3:45name. And he was interviewing German
- 3:48track and field athletes, similar, similar kind of
- 3:50content. And you know, I was interested
- 3:52in when he was chatting to Sprint as he he'd send me the
- 3:54transcript, I'd plug it into Google Translate and then I get
- 3:58an English translation out of it.
- 3:59And, and I've had a lot. I love that information.
- 4:03And I'd always listen to like a lot of coaching coaching
- 4:07podcasts. And I felt like a lot of them
- 4:09often went into like the, the, the, the content was a lot about
- 4:14kind of like the minutiae of training, like sort of real
- 4:16specifics because it was quite a high end, sort of like coaching
- 4:19audience and definitely quite a high end of like that, you know,
- 4:21the guests that were being interviewed.
- 4:24And, and I felt like I wanted something regarding training
- 4:26that was sort of more accessible to people that, you know, you've
- 4:30got a, you've got a 14 year old that's just watched the
- 4:32Olympics. And then they see, they've seen
- 4:33this person on TV and then they've seen this person
- 4:35chatting about their training on a, on a podcast where it'll be a
- 4:39little bit more rudimentary in terms of just, well, you know,
- 4:41this is what I might do on a Monday, pretty simple.
- 4:44And, and this is what I do on a Tuesday, etcetera.
- 4:45And they go through the training week.
- 4:47So I felt like it, it kind of offered something for the
- 4:50curiosity of a of a young athlete that maybe didn't have a
- 4:53huge background in, in sort of, you know, understanding like the
- 4:56science and the methodologies behind training programs.
- 4:59I love that as a guy who thinks the basics are more important
- 5:02than the top 1%, I I love that focus.
- 5:05Absolutely, 100% agree with that.
- 5:07And I think that, you know, it's in this social media age, it's
- 5:11quite easy to kind of get lost on that.
- 5:12And you know, the, the, the, that, that final 1% is quite
- 5:16sexy as what sells. But you know, the basics is
- 5:20what's going to is probably what's going to get you there.
- 5:22Exactly. I love that.
- 5:23Well, you kind of started diving into this.
- 5:25My next question is, you know, in business we have what's
- 5:28called an ideal customer. So we have a lot of people here
- 5:31at Gill that purchase from us. We have moms and dads that will
- 5:34buy discuses for like Christmas and things like that.
- 5:37We sell the contractors and architect, architect type stuff.
- 5:40But our main focus when we're designing a product, marketing
- 5:43and product thinking about anything about the market, we,
- 5:46we're talking, we, we in our head, we think of high school
- 5:49and college coaches. That's our ideal customer base
- 5:54for podcast is something very similar.
- 5:55There's lots of people that might listen to your podcast,
- 5:58but you're speaking to one type of person out there who would be
- 6:02your ideal listener profile for the podcast.
- 6:06Yeah, that's a great question. And I think that the specific
- 6:11nature of any listener for me is going to be, is going to be
- 6:14their interest. They're going to be interested
- 6:15in sprinting. They're going to be interested
- 6:17in getting faster or developing speed and power because it
- 6:20really kind of focuses on the the training in that regard.
- 6:23However, I mean, the, the variety of people that might be
- 6:28interested in sprinting or speed and power, you know, could be
- 6:31quite general, right? You could have like, you could
- 6:33have like a wide demographic that had that interest.
- 6:36So I think really for me, it's kind of anybody that's
- 6:38interested in speed, power sprinting, what these athletes
- 6:42are doing to perform at the level at which they do.
- 6:46And, you know, if you listen to the podcast, it's going to
- 6:48answer some of those questions for you.
- 6:50Yeah, I love that for you. You've been behind the scene on
- 6:54every single episode. What's been it's it's kind of A2
- 6:58parter. What's been the most popular
- 7:00episode as far as the most listens?
- 7:02And it may be a different answer here.
- 7:03What has been your favorite episode that you've been
- 7:06involved in? Yeah, it's a really, that's a,
- 7:09that's a really tough, that's a really tough question to answer.
- 7:12It's, it's tough to choose a favorite because I'm, I'm a
- 7:14diplomatic guy. I like to sit on the fence as
- 7:16well. But I think that, you know, I, I
- 7:19was a team, I was a teenager in the 80s.
- 7:21Sorry, in the 90s, not in the 80s.
- 7:23I'm making myself too old now. But yeah, in the 90s and I think
- 7:27kind of throughout kind of the mid 90s and the mid to late 90s,
- 7:30that was when I really got interested in the sport and I
- 7:33was a huge Ato Bolden fan. So having Ato Bolden on there
- 7:36was a big deal for me. Also had Donovan Bailey from
- 7:38that era as well as as a guest. So that's been that.
- 7:42Those were kind of like big moments for me.
- 7:45I've also had, you know, world and Olympic champion, so King
- 7:49Collins was on Richard Kilty, which I think was probably that
- 7:53that certainly the the episode that I've had like most messages
- 7:56about the 2014 sixty meter world indoor champion, Greg
- 8:01Rutherford. He he he that was quite a good
- 8:03episode. Isla del Punter, the the Swiss
- 8:06printer and as I mentioned, like Ronnie Baker gave some great
- 8:09insights. So and and I like as well.
- 8:13I've had sort of like some reason I've got quite a big
- 8:16following in Australia and what that's afforded me, which has
- 8:19been really quite cool, is that I had a couple that in fact, I
- 8:22think they recently just got married, but 3 masters.
- 8:26So she ran in Paris in the 100 meters in, in the Olympics just
- 8:29gone. But she started off as a surf
- 8:30lifesaver. So she was doing beach sprinting
- 8:33and then her now husband. They have the, the pro circuit
- 8:36in Australia where they have the the handicapped races.
- 8:38So, you know, they race over, I think it's 120 meters, but
- 8:43depending on how fast you are, you get a little bit of a head
- 8:45start. And then it's they have a big
- 8:47race every Easter called the school gift and had Matt Rizzo,
- 8:50her husband. He won the school gift in 2017.
- 8:52There's big prize money and there's lots of gambling going
- 8:54on. It's really, it's wildly
- 8:56different to track and field, but it's really exciting.
- 8:58So hearing some of the stories from people that have kind of
- 9:01come into track and field, involved in track and field, but
- 9:03also have a background in sprinting from in a slightly
- 9:07different scenario. That's that's something that
- 9:09I've really enjoyed chatting about as well.
- 9:11I love that. That's very cool.
- 9:12You know, a lot of people are listening to your podcast and
- 9:15they're going to learn a lot about sprinting or maybe
- 9:17training theory and what it takes to build the base of a
- 9:20sprinter and all the events that are applicable to that for you.
- 9:24You've been doing this now for two years.
- 9:27What have you learned being behind the mic?
- 9:29So not necessarily in regards to, you know, how to coach
- 9:33someone to be a faster sprinter or whatnot, but all the other
- 9:35things that people don't really see behind the curtain being a
- 9:39podcast host. So interviewing equipment,
- 9:43software, etcetera. What's one thing that you've
- 9:45learned in these two years? Yeah, I mean, I think marketing
- 9:50really matters and, you know, I don't think it's something that
- 9:53I'm that that doesn't come naturally to me.
- 9:57I listen to a podcast because I like the information and I'll
- 9:59typically listen to like an audio version as I'm driving in
- 10:02my car. So but having like professional
- 10:04looking videos and stuff like that, you know, I think that I
- 10:07think that's sort of perhaps quite important, more important
- 10:09than I realized it would be. And I think as well like, you
- 10:13know, the hosting platform and figuring all that stuff out
- 10:16again, you know, I'm not like hugely tech savvy.
- 10:19So it sort of seems quite interesting doing like a zoom
- 10:21recording and put it on and putting it online.
- 10:25But, you know, there's a few more steps that you kind of need
- 10:27to go through and, and, and the hosting platform that I
- 10:31initially used has actually just sort of changed its structure,
- 10:33which means I need to sort of like invest in time in learning
- 10:36how to put the podcast out there.
- 10:38But yeah. Yeah, some flexibility is
- 10:41certainly needed in the podcast world.
- 10:44All right, last two questions here.
- 10:46Where can we find the podcast? I'm assuming, but I don't want
- 10:50to assume that you're not exclusive.
- 10:51So maybe you're on Apple and Spotify.
- 10:53Are you on YouTube or kind of give us a rundown on where most
- 10:56people find the pet the podcast? So I would say that probably
- 11:01that that the format that I use is probably a little bit more
- 11:04applicable to Apple or Spotify just because it's because it's
- 11:06audio. The video edits are nothing
- 11:09fancy, but I do stick it up on YouTube as well.
- 11:11Perfect. Love that.
- 11:12And last question here, David, is, you know, again, the average
- 11:15podcast listener listens to between 7:00 and 10:00 podcasts.
- 11:18So I'm going to assume that as a podcast host, maybe you listen
- 11:21to podcast, What is your favorite podcast that's not
- 11:25track related? What do you like listening to
- 11:27out there in the podcast world? OK, so but part of the
- 11:30inspiration for mine was by a podcast called, it's called the
- 11:34High Performance podcast. So as in hyper HYPER
- 11:38performance. So sort of like they combine the
- 11:40two ways together by by some brothers in Australia called
- 11:45Angus Bradley and Oscar Bradley. And it was sent.
- 11:49I mean, I may be cheating a little bit because they have had
- 11:51a couple of guests like Justin Gatlin and Aaron Brown on.
- 11:54But essentially it's a strength and conditioning slash sort of
- 11:56like fitness podcast where they, you know, and they get kind of
- 12:00different people from different sort of like performance,
- 12:04different performance domains. I suppose physical performance
- 12:07domains. It's one that I listen to quite
- 12:09regularly outside of more sort of like typical track and field
- 12:12ones. Yeah, I love that.
- 12:14All right, well, listener, as you can see, we're pretty much
- 12:17done with this episode. So here's my challenge to you.
- 12:19Whatever podcast app you're using right now to listen to our
- 12:23show, more than likely you're going to find this show.
- 12:26So hit pause, go into that search button in that same app
- 12:29and just search the Maris Sprint podcast.
- 12:32And here's what I'm going to suggest.
- 12:33I always like, you know, when you dive into a new podcast,
- 12:35certainly the latest episode is an important one to listen to,
- 12:38right? So you know their latest up to
- 12:40date flavor and style and format.
- 12:42But go back, you heard some of the favorite ones that he has in
- 12:45some of the more popular ones. Greg Rutherford, what a great
- 12:47guy. Otto Bolden, of course, man,
- 12:49that's an amazing one. Maybe you go back into his
- 12:52library and check out those episodes as well.
- 12:55And then as always, hit the subscribe button, whether you're
- 12:57on YouTube or one of the podcast apps.
- 12:59That way you'll know every time he drops an episode, you'll be
- 13:02the first one to know. So go check out the Maris Sprint
- 13:05Podcast and maybe it's a good podcast for you and your
- 13:08repertoire of listening. Thanks for being here, guys.
- 13:10Appreciate it. Thank you, David.
