- 0:56Speaker 2: glad you're on the listening in. We have some things
- 1:01Speaker 2: that I really want to share with you today from
- 1:04Speaker 2: the Word of God. Galatians chapter three, one of the
- 1:11Speaker 2: earliest letters of Paul. Some say even predates first Thessalonians,
- 1:19Speaker 2: which I have always thought of and was taught that
- 1:22Speaker 2: the first of Paul's letters was first Thessalonians. But now
- 1:28Speaker 2: people are saying perhaps Galatians even predates that if it
- 1:32Speaker 2: isn't the first, it's one of the first and exceedingly
- 1:38Speaker 2: rich book. If your circumstances permit, sit down with us,
- 1:43Speaker 2: open the Word of God, the Book of Galicians, chapter three,
- 1:50Speaker 2: and we will be there very shortly. The mailing address
- 1:56Speaker 2: for this ministry and the it gives our tax deductible,
- 2:02Speaker 2: just as if you were giving to your local congregation,
- 2:06Speaker 2: is Post Office Box one four five, Charleston, West Virginia,
- 2:13Speaker 2: two five three to one. I will give you the
- 2:18Speaker 2: address again at the end of the broadcast. Would love
- 2:23Speaker 2: to hear from you. If the broadcast, the preaching, the
- 2:27Speaker 2: teaching of the Word of God is a blessing to you,
- 2:31Speaker 2: Let's pray and then we will be looking into this
- 2:36Speaker 2: exceedingly rich chapter. You join us. Now we approach together,
- 2:42Speaker 2: We approach the throne of Grace, Heavenly Father. We just
- 2:48Speaker 2: bow in your presence. And it's not as though we
- 2:51Speaker 2: come into your presence, because we're always in your presence,
- 2:57Speaker 2: but it is that we come rec recognizing your presence
- 3:03Speaker 2: in our situations, whatever their situations are. Thank you for
- 3:08Speaker 2: your faithfulness, your grace, even the gift that you give
- 3:15Speaker 2: us of faith. We pray that your blessings will be
- 3:20Speaker 2: upon those who listen today. Enable me to preach, to
- 3:24Speaker 2: teach the word of God. Speak to the hearts of people,
- 3:29Speaker 2: many of whom are in the faith of the faith,
- 3:34Speaker 2: have the faith. But there are some listening today who
- 3:37Speaker 2: are strangers to the faith. They are thus cursed under
- 3:44Speaker 2: the law. Oh Lord, help me to make it plain
- 3:46Speaker 2: today or the passage is teaching. Bless those who hear.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Strengthen the people, meet the needs of this ministry, help
- 3:58Speaker 2: us meet the needs of others. Will give you praise
- 4:01Speaker 2: to Christ, our Lord, Amen, Galatians Chapter three. Now, the
- 4:11Speaker 2: Book of Galicians is the only book that Paul wrote
- 4:18Speaker 2: to more than one person or one church. He wrote
- 4:22Speaker 2: to persons like Fahlehman, Titus, Timothy. He wrote to churches
- 4:30Speaker 2: like the Church at Ephesus, and the Church at Philippi,
- 4:34Speaker 2: and the Church at Corinth, the Church at Rome. But
- 4:40Speaker 2: the Book of Galicians is written to the churches plural
- 4:46Speaker 2: of Galicia. It's a region of what is now Turkey,
- 4:53Speaker 2: and Paul ministered greatly in that area. Even and Tioch
- 5:01Speaker 2: was where the Christians, for the Disciples of Christ, the
- 5:05Speaker 2: followers of Christ, were first called Christians. That's part of
- 5:10Speaker 2: the region of Galicia, and phenomenal thing happened these Galicians,
- 5:20Speaker 2: these well we would say Turks, Gentiles had under the
- 5:26Speaker 2: preaching of Paul and his Apostolic party, his evangelistic band,
- 5:34Speaker 2: had turned to faith in Christ. They were growing thriving.
- 5:42Speaker 2: The gospel was going out from Antioch other cities such
- 5:46Speaker 2: as Ephesis, Pergamus, Thyra, Tara, Smyrna, Leoticea, Philadelphia. The gospel
- 5:57Speaker 2: was just rushing out into parts of Asia Minor and
- 6:05Speaker 2: eventually into parts of Europe, with Paul and his party
- 6:10Speaker 2: going into northern Greece which was called Macedonia. But there
- 6:16Speaker 2: were a there was a group of people who were
- 6:23Speaker 2: quote Judeazers, they were Jews, and those people followed Paul
- 6:31Speaker 2: attempting to make merchandise of the gospel. They came in
- 6:38Speaker 2: telling these gentiles that and I'm really really just glossing
- 6:44Speaker 2: over the depth of the teaching, but here's basically what
- 6:49Speaker 2: they were saying. They were saying that, Okay, it's good
- 6:54Speaker 2: that you gentiles have put your faith in our Messiah,
- 6:58Speaker 2: Jesus Christ. However, in order for you gentiles to be
- 7:04Speaker 2: quote fully right with God, to be saved, you have
- 7:10Speaker 2: to men. You gentile men have to be circumcised. That
- 7:17Speaker 2: was the external ritual of the covenant God had made
- 7:24Speaker 2: to Abraham and to his descendants. You have to be circumcised.
- 7:30Speaker 2: And then all of you men, women, you have to
- 7:34Speaker 2: keep the law. You have to keep the moral law,
- 7:39Speaker 2: the civil law, the religious law, the dietary laws. You
- 7:43Speaker 2: have to keep the law in order for you to
- 7:47Speaker 2: be saved. And wherever Paul went, those Judaizers came in
- 7:53Speaker 2: after him to disrupt the teaching that Paul had given them.
- 7:59Speaker 2: And that is what the situation was that prompted Paul
- 8:04Speaker 2: to write the Book of Galicia to the Galicians. So
- 8:13Speaker 2: the whole book, six chapters. The overarching theme is is
- 8:20Speaker 2: a person right with God by keeping the law or
- 8:26Speaker 2: by faith which is given to people as a result
- 8:32Speaker 2: of the grace of God. So the issue becomes law
- 8:37Speaker 2: or grace. The issue becomes doing or faith. The whole
- 8:46Speaker 2: book deals with law versus grace. And when you get
- 8:52Speaker 2: into the third chapter, Paul's writing to these people, many
- 8:57Speaker 2: of whom, if not most of whom, were brought to
- 9:00Speaker 2: faith by his own preaching and teaching. And he starts
- 9:04Speaker 2: this third chapter by saying, since these Judaizers have come
- 9:10Speaker 2: in and have sought to corrupt the faith and tell
- 9:14Speaker 2: you that you gentiles have to be converted to Judaism
- 9:19Speaker 2: and then embrace Christ as a segment or a part
- 9:23Speaker 2: of Judaism. You see this extent of this fallacy, this
- 9:29Speaker 2: false teaching. And some people had begun to turn to that.
- 9:36Speaker 2: And so Paul writes the Church's plural of Galicia. And
- 9:41Speaker 2: in the opening line of the third chapter, Paul says, oh,
- 9:49Speaker 2: foolish Galicians. Really one man translated you idiots, and now
- 9:56Speaker 2: let's break heart. But you are being foolish. It's like
- 10:02Speaker 2: you are under a spell. Somebody has put a hex
- 10:06Speaker 2: on you, he says, old, foolish Galatians, who have bewitched you,
- 10:12Speaker 2: that you should not obey the truth before whose eyes
- 10:17Speaker 2: Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth crucified among you.
- 10:24Speaker 2: I preach Jesus Christ, death, burned the Resurrection. You know that.
- 10:28Speaker 2: And now it's though somebody has come along and bewitched you,
- 10:32Speaker 2: that you should not obey the truth Verse two. This
- 10:36Speaker 2: only would I learn of you. Did you receive the spirit,
- 10:40Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit, by the works of the law, or
- 10:45Speaker 2: did you receive the spirit by the hearing of faith.
- 10:49Speaker 2: We are accustomed to talk about the seeing of faith,
- 10:55Speaker 2: So he's talking here about the hearing of faith, completely different,
- 10:59Speaker 2: said as sight to hearing. What he's talking about is
- 11:05Speaker 2: you heard the gospel of the grace of God that
- 11:11Speaker 2: is appropriated by faith, And so you could even set
- 11:15Speaker 2: the thche before the faith where it says did you
- 11:20Speaker 2: receive this the I want to learn you Did you
- 11:24Speaker 2: receive the spirit by the keeping of the law or
- 11:27Speaker 2: by the hearing of about the faith? Are you so
- 11:32Speaker 2: foolish that, having begun in the spirit, you should now
- 11:35Speaker 2: be made perfect by the flesh. You are saved by
- 11:38Speaker 2: the grace of God. You put your faith in that.
- 11:42Speaker 2: And now are you being made complete by the works
- 11:45Speaker 2: of the law? Have you suffered so many things in vain?
- 11:50Speaker 2: If it were yet be yet in vain? He goes
- 11:53Speaker 2: on again and again in the first nine verses, showing
- 11:58Speaker 2: that you were saved by grace through faith, and you're
- 12:01Speaker 2: not required to even attempt to keep the law because
- 12:05Speaker 2: you can't. And he's going to expand on that. And
- 12:09Speaker 2: now I began reading in verse ten, and I had
- 12:14Speaker 2: to give all of that introduction so you get the
- 12:18Speaker 2: impact of what he's saying verse ten as because four
- 12:27Speaker 2: for because as many as are of the works of
- 12:33Speaker 2: the Law are under the curse, under the curse. For
- 12:39Speaker 2: it is written, cursed is everyone that continueth not in
- 12:45Speaker 2: all things which are written in the book of the Law,
- 12:49Speaker 2: to do them, but that no man is justified by
- 12:54Speaker 2: the law. In the sight of God. It is evident,
- 12:58Speaker 2: for the just shall live by faith, and the law
- 13:03Speaker 2: is not a faith. But the man that doeth them
- 13:06Speaker 2: shall live in them. Christ hath redeemed us from the
- 13:11Speaker 2: curse of the Law, being made a curse for us.
- 13:15Speaker 2: For it is written, cursed is everyone that hangeth upon
- 13:21Speaker 2: a tree, that the blessing of Abraham might come on
- 13:25Speaker 2: the gentiles through Jesus Christ, that you might receive the
- 13:31Speaker 2: promise of the Spirit through faith. I'm going to stop reading.
- 13:37Speaker 2: There far more than we can cover in this one broadcast.
- 13:43Speaker 2: If you have your Bible open, note the fact that
- 13:46Speaker 2: five times in verse ten and verse thirteen is the
- 13:52Speaker 2: word cursed. It is five times cursed, cursed, curse under
- 13:57Speaker 2: the curse, two times in verse ten and three times
- 14:04Speaker 2: in verse thirteen. Important word. It's such a powerful word,
- 14:12Speaker 2: this matter of curse. The first person or first creature
- 14:20Speaker 2: who is affected and cursed was Satan himself. When in
- 14:26Speaker 2: Genesis three tempted Eve, she sins gave to her husband
- 14:29Speaker 2: he ate. And then it said to this God said
- 14:33Speaker 2: to the serpent, you're cursed. You crawl on your belly
- 14:36Speaker 2: all the days of your life. Yeat the dust to
- 14:39Speaker 2: your curse. The next quote creation that was cursed was
- 14:45Speaker 2: the ground. The earth itself was cursed because of Adam,
- 14:51Speaker 2: who was king of the creation of the earth, who
- 14:54Speaker 2: was king over the earth, had dominion. Because of his sin,
- 14:59Speaker 2: the earth was cursed. All upheavals of nature, from the weeds,
- 15:09Speaker 2: the thorns, to the tornadoes and floods and famines and earthquake,
- 15:16Speaker 2: all of the upheavals of nature are evidence that the
- 15:20Speaker 2: world is under the curse. But in this passage he's
- 15:24Speaker 2: talking about a curse. It has the idea of judgment
- 15:32Speaker 2: of punishment, It has the idea of abominable. And he
- 15:40Speaker 2: says in verse nine, verse ten, as many as are
- 15:46Speaker 2: of the works of the law, they're under the curse,
- 15:50Speaker 2: under the curse. Five times he talks about curse in
- 15:56Speaker 2: these verse ten and verse thirteen, that you are under
- 16:03Speaker 2: the curse. He says in verse eight. The scripture for
- 16:08Speaker 2: seeing that God would justify the heathen, that's gentiles through
- 16:13Speaker 2: faith preached before the Gospel of Abraham the good News, saying,
- 16:18Speaker 2: in these shallow nations be blessed. So then they which
- 16:23Speaker 2: are of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. Now you
- 16:29Speaker 2: have the jew ethnic Jew, which is a descendant of Abraham.
- 16:35Speaker 2: But you have the spiritual descendants of Abraham, who by
- 16:41Speaker 2: faith trust the Lord, and Abraham, whom Jesus said saw
- 16:47Speaker 2: my day and was glad. Abraham was justified by faith.
- 16:54Speaker 2: In fact, Abraham was justified by faith over four hundred
- 16:59Speaker 2: years before the giving of the Law at Sinai. You
- 17:06Speaker 2: foolish relations. Do you really think that you can turn
- 17:12Speaker 2: away from Christ and go back to keep the law? Men,
- 17:16Speaker 2: be circumcised. Everyone, come under the confines of the curse
- 17:21Speaker 2: of the law. You got to keep every part of
- 17:25Speaker 2: the law. In fact, the scripture says that you are
- 17:30Speaker 2: obligated to keep the whole law. Verse ten curses everyone
- 17:36Speaker 2: that continueth not in all things which are written in
- 17:40Speaker 2: the book of the Law to do them. And you
- 17:43Speaker 2: know you can't do all the law. Ask any Jew,
- 17:49Speaker 2: any religious Jew, and he will tell you, it is
- 17:53Speaker 2: impossible to keep all the law perfectly. Every one of
- 17:59Speaker 2: them would tell you that they had, by the time
- 18:02Speaker 2: of Jesus compounded the law into six hundred and thirteen commandments,
- 18:11Speaker 2: three hundred and sixty five of which were thou shalt not.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Nobody can keep them all. In fact, they are parts
- 18:19Speaker 2: of the law now that no Jew can keep. For example,
- 18:23Speaker 2: there is no temple, there is no priesthood. Therefore there
- 18:27Speaker 2: is no annual yam Kapoor, day of Atonement and the
- 18:32Speaker 2: sacrificing of a goat the scape goat. They can't fully
- 18:38Speaker 2: keep the law, and yet they're obligated. The man who
- 18:41Speaker 2: tries to get right with God by keeping the law
- 18:47Speaker 2: is under a curse. The law becomes a curse. That
- 18:55Speaker 2: law is perfect, so Psalm says, converting the soul it
- 19:00Speaker 2: has in it. The law is perfect, it's from God.
- 19:04Speaker 2: But it becomes a curse to you. You become a
- 19:08Speaker 2: curse when you try to get right with God by
- 19:12Speaker 2: doing what the law says. When you can't do it.
- 19:17Speaker 2: This is making sense, It's it's logical. You the law.
- 19:22Speaker 2: What is the law? The law then is to show
- 19:25Speaker 2: you your imperfections. In fact, in this Church Chat third chapter,
- 19:30Speaker 2: Paul will say that the law was the school master
- 19:36Speaker 2: to the time of Christ, so that we could be
- 19:39Speaker 2: justified by faith. But after faith has come, you're no
- 19:44Speaker 2: longer under that school master. That the law teaches you
- 19:49Speaker 2: about God and his holiness is justice, is righteousness. But
- 19:54Speaker 2: the law teaches you about your immability. The law con
- 20:00Speaker 2: fix you, the law finds you guilty of sin. And
- 20:05Speaker 2: how foolish it is for these galicians who have put
- 20:10Speaker 2: faith in the Lord to be. Turning back to the
- 20:13Speaker 2: quote elements of the Law. The first time curse is
- 20:18Speaker 2: used in verse ten, it is of the law. You
- 20:22Speaker 2: are under the curse. You are obligated to keep all
- 20:28Speaker 2: of the law, all of the time, and you can't
- 20:32Speaker 2: do it. Thank God, for verse thirteen, Christ hath redeemed
- 20:39Speaker 2: us from the curse of the law being made a
- 20:44Speaker 2: curse for us. So in verse ten, we are under
- 20:49Speaker 2: the curse. Because curse is everybody who cannot continue in
- 20:56Speaker 2: all things which are written, and that's everybody. Nobody's going
- 20:59Speaker 2: to keep the whole law, So we're all under the curse.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Every man is a sinner. We have all like sheep,
- 21:10Speaker 2: gone astray. Having turned everyone astray. We have each of
- 21:14Speaker 2: us turned to our own way as Isaiah fifty three. Success.
- 21:20Speaker 2: But the verse continues, but the Lord hath laid upon
- 21:24Speaker 2: him Christ, the iniquity, the sin of us all, thank God.
- 21:28Speaker 2: And that brings us then to verse thirteen of Galatians three.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law.
- 21:39Speaker 2: There it is again in verse ten, we were under
- 21:42Speaker 2: the curse. But now in verse thirteen it's the curse
- 21:47Speaker 2: of the law, and Christ has redeemed us from the curse.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Under the curse verse ten, from the curse verse thirteen,
- 21:58Speaker 2: Christ has redeemed us from that curse. Our inability to
- 22:03Speaker 2: fulfill the law necessitated somebody else quote redeeming us from
- 22:11Speaker 2: under that curse. It's a beautiful word to regieme. In fact,
- 22:18Speaker 2: in the New Testament, there are three different Greek words
- 22:24Speaker 2: that are translated in our Bible redeem. The first is agodzo.
- 22:32Speaker 2: That's a market you were crossword puzzles, you know the
- 22:37Speaker 2: word a gora a g u r e, and that's
- 22:40Speaker 2: the Greek market place, the word gora out of He
- 22:47Speaker 2: has come into the market place and bought us. If
- 22:53Speaker 2: you were going to the market place, that's an outdoor store.
- 22:58Speaker 2: You're going to the market good place to buy, and
- 23:01Speaker 2: you buy everything there, from carrots to cloth or a coughin.
- 23:07Speaker 2: I mean you can everything is sold in the marketplace,
- 23:11Speaker 2: and you go into the market place to buy. And
- 23:17Speaker 2: that's what he did. But the second word is out
- 23:22Speaker 2: of the marketplace. The prefix ex algorazzo is the verb
- 23:28Speaker 2: to buy in the marketplace. The second word is buy
- 23:33Speaker 2: it to bring it out. We're not talking about buying clothes.
- 23:38Speaker 2: We're talking about buying souls. The Lord went into the
- 23:42Speaker 2: marketplace of sin where we were held as slaves, and
- 23:48Speaker 2: he has bought us, paid for our redemption, and brought
- 23:53Speaker 2: us out from under the curse of the law. Praise God.
- 23:59Speaker 2: And the third word for redeeming the New Testament little
- 24:05Speaker 2: word loutro l ut r oh. It means to be
- 24:10Speaker 2: free and in using in the New Testament with regard
- 24:17Speaker 2: to the redemption of souls, it is appah luto it
- 24:24Speaker 2: is to set free from Here's the picture. You are
- 24:30Speaker 2: slaves to sin under the curse of the law, unable
- 24:36Speaker 2: to fulfill the demands of the law. The law can't
- 24:39Speaker 2: keep save you. The law can only condemn you. The
- 24:43Speaker 2: law can show you your sinfulness. But you have to
- 24:47Speaker 2: look away in faith to God who gave Christ, and
- 24:52Speaker 2: put your faith in Jesus Christ. And that is he
- 24:56Speaker 2: who has come into the marketplace of sin where we
- 25:01Speaker 2: were enslaved, unable to get out from under the curse.
- 25:06Speaker 2: And he comes in and buy his own blood. Glory
- 25:12Speaker 2: to God. He pays the sime debt that we owe
- 25:17Speaker 2: in the marketplace and then brings us out of the
- 25:21Speaker 2: marketplace and sets us free free from the law. Oh,
- 25:27Speaker 2: happy condition Jesus's blood, and there is redemption cursed by
- 25:31Speaker 2: the law. Bruise Mother, fall Christ to three deemed Us
- 25:35Speaker 2: once for all, Praise the name. Do you see that
- 25:41Speaker 2: you cannot be saved by any so called mixture of
- 25:47Speaker 2: grace and works. You can't. It's that grace and works
- 25:55Speaker 2: do not mix. The grace that saves is is by faith,
- 26:05Speaker 2: grace God's part, faith man's part. Man is saved by
- 26:10Speaker 2: faith alone, but the faith that saves is never alone.
- 26:14Speaker 2: That's an old adage from Bible scholars, even of the
- 26:20Speaker 2: fifteen hundreds. Man is saved by faith alone, but the
- 26:24Speaker 2: faith that saves is never alone. You are not saved
- 26:28Speaker 2: by works, but you are saved by grace unto good works,
- 26:35Speaker 2: not in order to be saved or to be kept saved,
- 26:39Speaker 2: but because you are saved under the curse. Verse ten,
- 26:44Speaker 2: from the curse thirteen. I'll have to stop. Three more
- 26:50Speaker 2: to go. Let's do it on next week. Can you
- 26:54Speaker 2: just contemplate the thought Christ became a curse for us.
