Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: What's happened in everyone, Emily a Body Here, you are
- 0:22Speaker 1: listening to five minute Friday on Hurdle. Good morning, good afternoon,
- 0:26Speaker 1: good evening, whenever you're listening to this. I've received so
- 0:29Speaker 1: many sweet messages lately about this segment on the show,
- 0:34Speaker 1: and it's so appreciated.
- 0:35Speaker 2: I love that you love it.
- 0:37Speaker 1: So if you're one of these people and you're listening
- 0:40Speaker 1: right now, and I know that there are thousands of you,
- 0:43Speaker 1: it would mean a lot to me if you share
- 0:46Speaker 1: Hurdle on your social feeds wherever that might be. If
- 0:49Speaker 1: you send an episode to a friend, shoot me a
- 0:53Speaker 1: message over on the Hurdle page at Hurdle podcast or
- 0:56Speaker 1: at Emily a Body and let me know that you
- 0:58Speaker 1: love it. Spread the love if you will. I have
- 1:03Speaker 1: been head down in work mode recently. I'm excited to
- 1:11Speaker 1: be traveling to Japan for the World Athletics Championships in September,
- 1:16Speaker 1: and knowing that I have quite a bit of time there,
- 1:19Speaker 1: I'll be there for about two weeks, I want to
- 1:23Speaker 1: prepare everything so that I can set myself up to
- 1:26Speaker 1: be in the best position possible, and that means that
- 1:30Speaker 1: I'm noticing I'm not showing up a lot in the
- 1:34Speaker 1: digital world these days. I'm waking up, I'm doing my
- 1:37Speaker 1: workout and probably sharing something from that on Instagram, and
- 1:40Speaker 1: then I'm getting back to my apartment and jumping into things.
- 1:46Speaker 2: I feel a little bit disconnected, if.
- 1:48Speaker 1: We're being honest, But I know that this will have
- 1:51Speaker 1: a really good payoff and will set me up to
- 1:54Speaker 1: be in a really good position. Just right now, it
- 1:57Speaker 1: feels a little bit isolating, if I'm being real. I'm
- 2:01Speaker 1: also having a tough time, and this is what I
- 2:02Speaker 1: want to talk about this week. My workouts aren't really
- 2:06Speaker 1: feeling like they're clicking, not only my running workouts. I
- 2:11Speaker 1: will say I've had I feel like I'm a bit
- 2:14Speaker 1: in this place of a I've hit a plateau with
- 2:17Speaker 1: some of the skills that I've been working on at
- 2:20Speaker 1: the gym, and between that and summer running gestures loosely
- 2:26Speaker 1: being summer running and it being so humid and me
- 2:29Speaker 1: just feeling completely like a baby deer out there. No
- 2:33Speaker 1: thing's feeling really super stellar. And that is so difficult
- 2:38Speaker 1: because this is something that I do regularly in my
- 2:41Speaker 1: life to remind myself that I am capable, and so
- 2:45Speaker 1: there's a bit of both going on.
- 2:47Speaker 2: There is this I'm showing up.
- 2:50Speaker 1: It's not really feeling that good, but I'm still showing
- 2:53Speaker 1: up anyway, and that is definitely something to be proud of.
- 2:55Speaker 2: And I know that I'm better for it.
- 2:57Speaker 1: And there is this lingering frustration of is everybody else
- 3:01Speaker 1: not struggling? Am I just not as good at these
- 3:05Speaker 1: things as I thought I was? And this is what
- 3:07Speaker 1: I know to be true. I know that the latter
- 3:11Speaker 1: is what we in life calling we refer to as
- 3:12Speaker 1: the gremlin, and that negative self talk. It's not doing
- 3:17Speaker 1: me any favors whatsoever. I know that these are not facts.
- 3:25Speaker 1: These are just my thoughts. And so what I've been
- 3:28Speaker 1: working to do consciously is to flip that script. When
- 3:33Speaker 1: I say my workouts haven't been going well lately, that's
- 3:36Speaker 1: not fact. Instead, I can say I haven't been feeling
- 3:41Speaker 1: really stellar in the gym. Okay, that's fair, that's valid.
- 3:47Speaker 1: But now what do you do with that? I ask myself, Okay,
- 3:49Speaker 1: if I hear that, then what's in my control to
- 3:52Speaker 1: flip the script make things better? That's up to me.
- 3:57Speaker 1: And if you hear this and you feel like you
- 3:59Speaker 1: really resonate with this sentiment, then that's also up to you.
- 4:03Speaker 1: So here's what I'm doing about this not so stellar
- 4:09Speaker 1: feeling that I'm having about my workouts.
- 4:12Speaker 2: I'm mixing things up.
- 4:14Speaker 1: So on Saturdays, I've been running with a rather large
- 4:17Speaker 1: group here in New York City. Nike puts together a
- 4:21Speaker 1: training collective for women. This is the first year where
- 4:26Speaker 1: it's all really promoting her. They put together this group
- 4:30Speaker 1: of women. They call it Project Moonshot, and these women
- 4:33Speaker 1: meet every weekend as a part of this program to
- 4:35Speaker 1: do the long run. And I've loved getting together and
- 4:38Speaker 1: that camaraderie with them, but it just I need to
- 4:42Speaker 1: mix this up. I need to mix this up for
- 4:44Speaker 1: right now and just get my feedback under me. So
- 4:48Speaker 1: on Saturday, I'm setting myself up for success in the
- 4:52Speaker 1: best way I know how I know, I like to
- 4:53Speaker 1: get out early, especially when it's warm out. Typically speaking,
- 4:57Speaker 1: that group doesn't start running until around eight to fifteen.
- 5:01Speaker 1: So I'm going to start my long run with one
- 5:03Speaker 1: of my dearest friends who's also training for an ultra marathon,
- 5:08Speaker 1: and we are going to run together at six point
- 5:11Speaker 1: thirty in the morning. That gives me a little bit
- 5:14Speaker 1: of my confidence back. That is a variable that I
- 5:18Speaker 1: know typically works in my favor. And having the support
- 5:23Speaker 1: of my friend, she knows how I have been feeling
- 5:26Speaker 1: with my workouts. I vocalize to her that I really
- 5:29Speaker 1: want to reclaim some joy this weekend, and so to
- 5:32Speaker 1: be able to not only open up to her, but
- 5:35Speaker 1: use her as accountability buddy and be able to really
- 5:38Speaker 1: feel safe together, that's helpful too. Those are two things
- 5:42Speaker 1: that I know are within my power to reclaim some
- 5:46Speaker 1: of my juju back. Okay, I'll say it one more time.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Your thoughts are just that, They're just thoughts. They're valid.
- 5:54Speaker 1: It's okay to have thoughts, but it is up to
- 5:56Speaker 1: you to then decide how am I going to respond
- 6:00Speaker 1: to my thoughts. And so I'm in a little bit
- 6:03Speaker 1: of a workout right now. I know that many of
- 6:06Speaker 1: you have been in this place before. I know that
- 6:08Speaker 1: I am not the only person that feels this way
- 6:12Speaker 1: at the current time, or that will ever feel this way,
- 6:15Speaker 1: and that in itself also helps me navigate this discomfort,
- 6:19Speaker 1: helps me know that I am not alone in what
- 6:23Speaker 1: it is that I'm going through. So my thought prompt
- 6:26Speaker 1: for you this week is is there something that you're
- 6:28Speaker 1: feeling a little frustrated over? And After you identify that thing,
- 6:34Speaker 1: what is within your control to do something about it?
- 6:37Speaker 1: How can you respond to your thoughts and take action
- 6:41Speaker 1: in a way that serves you. Again, what's something that
- 6:45Speaker 1: you're struggling over. Identify that and then ask yourself what
- 6:49Speaker 1: is within my control to do in the near future
- 6:53Speaker 1: to feel a little bit better, Because again, that's up
- 6:57Speaker 1: to you, that's up to me, and we get to
- 7:01Speaker 1: respond to our thoughts. And now a listener question. Hey
- 7:06Speaker 1: em I'm a new listener. I found the pod to
- 7:09Speaker 1: be the perfect starter for my weekends and weekly resets.
- 7:12Speaker 1: I feel calm but inspired after an episode to get
- 7:14Speaker 1: after it.
- 7:15Speaker 2: I'm a big fan of your advice.
- 7:17Speaker 1: It's straightforward, approachable, and reminds me that little changes can
- 7:20Speaker 1: have a big impact. Okay, I love you, listener. I've
- 7:23Speaker 1: been struggling to find my next hurdle professionally. I love
- 7:26Speaker 1: what I do and I would do it for free
- 7:28Speaker 1: because it makes me happy.
- 7:29Speaker 2: That's so sweet.
- 7:30Speaker 1: I have set big goals and have been achieving or
- 7:32Speaker 1: have achieved them. Right now, I feel ambitionless at work.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I've settled into a role and don't have anything to chase.
- 7:40Speaker 1: How do you continue to push forward? Or set new
- 7:42Speaker 1: goals when you've found success and completed your current goals.
- 7:46Speaker 2: Thanks so much. Okay, Okay, this is a really good one.
- 7:52Speaker 1: And firstly, I want to say that it's really beautiful
- 7:56Speaker 1: that you have found yourself in this role that really
- 7:59Speaker 1: aligns with your passions and what seems to be your purpose.
- 8:03Speaker 1: You are in this place. If you're willing to work
- 8:05Speaker 1: for free, then you're doing something right. A lot of
- 8:08Speaker 1: folks would love to be in a job or a
- 8:10Speaker 1: role like that. With that said, I too have been
- 8:14Speaker 1: at a place where I feel as though I have
- 8:17Speaker 1: plateaued professionally, we can call it that. And so when
- 8:21Speaker 1: you're unsure of what you want to do next, look
- 8:25Speaker 1: around you and ask yourself, who is it that I
- 8:27Speaker 1: am learning from? Who is it that I have an
- 8:29Speaker 1: opportunity to garner new education from? Because although right now
- 8:34Speaker 1: you might not have an immediate goal professionally, that doesn't
- 8:38Speaker 1: mean that you have to be at a standstill when
- 8:40Speaker 1: it comes to your learning. So what I would advise
- 8:43Speaker 1: you to do is take survey or inventory of who
- 8:48Speaker 1: is around you and ask yourself, who is it that
- 8:51Speaker 1: I can connect with during this time to garner new
- 8:53Speaker 1: inspiration and Once you identify those individuals, then try to
- 8:59Speaker 1: set up accessible opportunities to claim some of their time.
- 9:05Speaker 1: I know this can be difficult, depending on what your
- 9:07Speaker 1: role is, and depending what industry you're in or what
- 9:09Speaker 1: field that you work in. But and I say this
- 9:11Speaker 1: with compassion, flattery will get you everywhere, or at least
- 9:15Speaker 1: it will get you a lot farther than if you
- 9:18Speaker 1: lead without it. So someone that you identify, that you admire,
- 9:22Speaker 1: that you think is really skilled, shoot them a note,
- 9:25Speaker 1: let them know that you feel that way, and then
- 9:28Speaker 1: ask them if you could get ten to fifteen minutes
- 9:31Speaker 1: of their time to learn about how they got to
- 9:34Speaker 1: that place, and entice them even more by offering to
- 9:38Speaker 1: buy them a coffee. And if you're not in the
- 9:40Speaker 1: same place, in the same state, in the same office,
- 9:42Speaker 1: you can then offer to send a gift card of
- 9:46Speaker 1: some sort to cover the cost of whatever sip that
- 9:49Speaker 1: they're after.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Again, this is.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Just one example of something that you can do while
- 9:53Speaker 1: you feel a little bit stagnant that can help you
- 9:55Speaker 1: professionally in the long run. It's only one examp. Oftentimes,
- 10:01Speaker 1: in goal setting workshops, what I encourage attendees to do
- 10:05Speaker 1: is to envision yourself five years from right now, if
- 10:11Speaker 1: you were to write down what your best case scenario
- 10:14Speaker 1: would look like, what your title could be, what it
- 10:17Speaker 1: is that you have achieved, what would that look like?
- 10:21Speaker 1: And then also what would that feel like? And when
- 10:24Speaker 1: you can work backward and start to paint the picture
- 10:27Speaker 1: that way, then you can kind of plug and play
- 10:29Speaker 1: the pieces to the puzzle to ask yourself the important question. Okay,
- 10:33Speaker 1: if I ultimately think it would be cool to do
- 10:36Speaker 1: this or feel this way, what is within my power?
- 10:40Speaker 1: Are you seeing a trend here to get there? What
- 10:43Speaker 1: are small stepping stones that maybe didn't look so obvious
- 10:47Speaker 1: before that fall into place once you really allow yourself
- 10:52Speaker 1: to dream big, to think big, to ask what's my
- 10:56Speaker 1: dream scenario? I hope that this helps and I'm always
- 11:00Speaker 1: down for listener questions, so if you have one, feel
- 11:03Speaker 1: free to email over at Hello at Hurdle dot us
- 11:06Speaker 1: and again, like I said at the top of this episode,
- 11:09Speaker 1: please share the love for hurdle with friends, with families
- 11:13Speaker 1: with your social tags.
- 11:14Speaker 2: It's the best.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I'm over at Emily a Body and at Hurdle Podcast
