- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Brian Medour. Bank of Canada is holding its benchmark
- 0:09Speaker 2: interest rate at 2.25%, assuring Canadians that it will be
- 0:14Speaker 2: a source of stability in response to shifting global developments.
- 0:18Speaker 2: The United States has imposed 50% tariffs on a variety
- 0:22Speaker 2: of Canadian goods, while Canada will introduce counter-tariffs on U.S.
- 0:27Speaker 2: imports starting next week. Governor Tiff Macklem says new U.S.
- 0:31Speaker 2: tariffs and increased trade uncertainty pose risks to a rebound
- 0:35Speaker 2: in economic activity, and if tariffs remain in place, they
- 0:39Speaker 2: will hit targeted sectors hard.
- 0:42Speaker 3: But we don't expect them to have a large direct
- 0:44Speaker 3: impact on the overall level of economic activity in Canada.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Affected products represent about 5% of exports to the United States,
- 0:53Speaker 3: and the federal government's support programs will likely mitigate some
- 0:56Speaker 3: of the harm. However, the situation does remain fluid. The
- 1:00Speaker 3: added uncertainty about the future of Canada-U.S. trade relations may
- 1:04Speaker 3: lead businesses more broadly to delay investment and hiring decisions.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Summer heat is slowly giving way to fall chill. That
- 1:13Speaker 2: means frost warnings for much of the province tonight. The
- 1:17Speaker 2: west coast, south coast, central Newfoundland, the metro region, and
- 1:20Speaker 2: parts of Labrador are under a risk of frost overnight.
- 1:23Speaker 2: with temperatures, especially in low-lying areas, dropping into the single digits.
- 1:28Speaker 2: David Neal, a meteorologist at the Gander Weather Office, says
- 1:32Speaker 2: the number of 20-degree days is going to grow fewer
- 1:35Speaker 2: as we march through September.
- 1:37Speaker 1: So yeah, it's definitely a great time of year where
- 1:40Speaker 1: you're going to have to start thinking about, if you
- 1:42Speaker 1: haven't started harvesting some of your plants and stuff like that,
- 1:46Speaker 1: we're getting into that type of season where they may
- 1:48Speaker 1: have to start taking some precautions on these colder nights.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Some barbecue utensils distributed throughout Canada have been recalled by
- 1:57Speaker 2: the federal government. Cuisinart metal wire bristle grill brushes can
- 2:03Speaker 2: fragment and stick to the food or grill. If ingested,
- 2:07Speaker 2: even one of those bristles can end up causing surgery.
- 2:10Speaker 2: As of August 26, the company, Crate and Barrel Canada,
- 2:14Speaker 2: had not received any reports of injury. Consumers should quit
- 2:18Speaker 2: using the items immediately and contact the company for a
- 2:21Speaker 2: full refund. The Premier is weighing in on questions raised
- 2:26Speaker 2: about new Hilroy exercise books featuring an incomplete map of Canada.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Generations of Canadians are familiar with the iconic map emblazoned
- 2:35Speaker 2: across the front of the books, but a new glossy
- 2:38Speaker 2: covered version of the Scribblers is missing Newfoundland and Cape Breton.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Premier Tony Wakeham says you can leave Newfoundland off an
- 2:45Speaker 2: exercise book, but you can't erase us. Hilroy, which has
- 2:48Speaker 2: been providing exercise books to Canadian students for more than
- 2:52Speaker 2: a century, is owning up to the mistake. It admits
- 2:55Speaker 2: that a production error that left Newfoundland and Cape Breton
- 2:58Speaker 2: off the map on their glossy cover design stings. That's
- 3:02Speaker 2: your news. I'm Brian Medour.
