- 2:13Speaker 3: Mister j is featured. So I want to ask you
- 2:16Speaker 3: a question.
- 2:17Speaker 2: When did your first fall in love with words and poetry?
- 2:21Speaker 4: Oh?
- 2:22Speaker 5: I first fell in love with words and poetry, I'll
- 2:26Speaker 5: be honest with you, probably in college at the University
- 2:30Speaker 5: of New Orleans. I was a communications major along with
- 2:34Speaker 5: some drama, but you know, I had to take many
- 2:37Speaker 5: English classes, and so through studying that and having the
- 2:41Speaker 5: opportunity to actually study a black authors, African American authors,
- 2:46Speaker 5: you know, I really fell in love with a lot
- 2:49Speaker 5: of the artists and writers from the Renaissance. And you know,
- 2:54Speaker 5: that's that's kind of history, you know, just just hearing
- 2:57Speaker 5: those stories or reading those stories, but also just seeing
- 3:01Speaker 5: how somebody like the Lance and Hughes, you know, put
- 3:04Speaker 5: his words together in those poems. That really made a
- 3:08Speaker 5: move on me and you know, got me very interested
- 3:11Speaker 5: or more interested and not only reading, but just inspired
- 3:14Speaker 5: to just write and put my emotions down on paper.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Absolutely, and we all know that that is sometimes hard
- 3:22Speaker 2: because people are mean. You're putting yourself out there as
- 3:26Speaker 2: an artist, and just in the words of miss Erica Bad,
- 3:30Speaker 2: we're sensitive about.
- 3:31Speaker 3: It, right.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Yes.
- 3:36Speaker 2: So I met you a couple of months ago at
- 3:39Speaker 2: the Black Book and Film Festival in band Ruge, Louisiana.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Shout out to miss the Moon and Rebirth Magazine for
- 3:45Speaker 2: putting on such an amazing event, and we just kind
- 3:48Speaker 2: of vibed, and I was like, I gotta have him
- 3:51Speaker 2: in this issue.
- 3:52Speaker 3: So I wanted to let you see what you look
- 3:55Speaker 3: like in print.
- 3:56Speaker 4: Their okay ooh, okay.
- 4:04Speaker 3: I don't know why why Zoom does that?
- 4:06Speaker 4: That's okay.
- 4:07Speaker 5: And you know what's cool, that's actually my favorite print color.
- 4:13Speaker 4: You know that the blue. You know, I'm gonna say.
- 4:16Speaker 5: Guy blue, but it's a cousin, but that's just as perfect.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Wow.
- 4:21Speaker 3: Yeah, So that's what you look like in print. You
- 4:23Speaker 3: gotta go ahead and get you a copy.
- 4:25Speaker 2: You guys can get your copy at nineteen dash magazine
- 4:28Speaker 2: dot com. We have digital and we have print, So
- 4:31Speaker 2: going over and support us.
- 4:33Speaker 6: This is our second year, number ten, volume number ten.
- 4:39Speaker 6: Y'all see your girl on the cover as usual, and
- 4:44Speaker 6: I was excited about it. So now that you see
- 4:49Speaker 6: what it looks like in.
- 4:50Speaker 4: Print, how I mean, I feel I feel great.
- 4:53Speaker 5: I really, I feel honest to just be a part
- 4:56Speaker 5: of the tenth issue and I'm gonna actually come flatter.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Did a great job. Yeah, did a great job.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Hey, thank you.
- 5:06Speaker 2: Let's let's talk a little bit about the Black Book
- 5:11Speaker 2: and Film Festival.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Why were you there? Tell the people? Why were you there?
- 5:16Speaker 3: It's big.
- 5:17Speaker 6: I loved it and yes, so go ahead and tell
- 5:20Speaker 6: them and again there you go.
- 5:22Speaker 4: Minie me. All right.
- 5:24Speaker 5: So this was our premiere for the Live from Government
- 5:28Speaker 5: Street the Story of Mister J my own documentary, and
- 5:32Speaker 5: it's actually a student film that was directed and co
- 5:37Speaker 5: produced by Errol Lutrell, who is a graduate graduating senior
- 5:41Speaker 5: from Bato's High School. So we've been working the past
- 5:45Speaker 5: almost like sixteen months on the project. And you know,
- 5:49Speaker 5: it's just been an honor to somebody wants to do
- 5:52Speaker 5: a documentary on me on my musical journey and you
- 5:56Speaker 5: know we'll say DJ journey too, just art the art
- 5:59Speaker 5: journey all all wrapped up together, right, and you know,
- 6:02Speaker 5: it's not a very long film, but you know, it's
- 6:05Speaker 5: a very authentic film about you know, my travels coming
- 6:09Speaker 5: out of Baton Rouge, going to New Orleans and all
- 6:12Speaker 5: the other places I've traveled, you know, with music and
- 6:14Speaker 5: where music.
- 6:15Speaker 4: Is taking me.
- 6:16Speaker 5: And so I'm just very honored to be ready to
- 6:19Speaker 5: put this this piece out for the masses. But it
- 6:23Speaker 5: just felt really good to debut it with you all
- 6:27Speaker 5: at the the Rebirt Black Book and Film Festival, but
- 6:32Speaker 5: also just from my hometown in Baton Rouge. Beautiful library,
- 6:36Speaker 5: the weather was great, just everything was was well.
- 6:39Speaker 4: It was good.
- 6:40Speaker 5: It was good, and so it just helps us really
- 6:43Speaker 5: just kick off the promotion that we're going to be
- 6:45Speaker 5: doing because we're going to hit some other festivals. But
- 6:48Speaker 5: you know, for Starters, it was it was an honor
- 6:51Speaker 5: just to be a part of it. So yeah, this
- 6:53Speaker 5: is this is a cover and so we're coming soon,
- 6:56Speaker 5: coming soon.
- 6:57Speaker 2: I love it and it was amazing. The film is amazing.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Just to see all of the people that came out
- 7:03Speaker 2: to support.
- 7:04Speaker 3: You guys, it was.
- 7:06Speaker 2: It was beautiful because you know how it is sometimes
- 7:09Speaker 2: we plan for people and they don't show up. Yeah,
- 7:13Speaker 2: but the show must go on. But we didn't have
- 7:15Speaker 2: that issue. You guys had a packed house.
- 7:18Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, you know, we missed a couple of people.
- 7:20Speaker 5: But I mean, the beauty of it is not only
- 7:23Speaker 5: was it Black History Month. We know down South Louisiana
- 7:26Speaker 5: it's Modigras season, so a lot of people who wanted
- 7:28Speaker 5: to be there haad of the obligations with either balls
- 7:31Speaker 5: or actually riding in parades that they in New Orleans.
- 7:34Speaker 4: And stuff like that. So you know, that's why.
- 7:36Speaker 5: You know, this was one of many screenings, but it
- 7:40Speaker 5: worked out to where many people did come out and
- 7:44Speaker 5: you know, they got to see other authors and other
- 7:47Speaker 5: directors and to meet you guys too. So it was
- 7:49Speaker 5: it was. It was good for the city, great for
- 7:52Speaker 5: the our community.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Absolutely, it definitely was.
- 7:55Speaker 1: It was.
- 7:56Speaker 3: It was amazing. I was like, Okay, here we go.
- 7:59Speaker 4: We're in the building, in.
- 8:00Speaker 2: The building, and it's always amazing to have us in
- 8:03Speaker 2: the building, Like we build the building we are the building.
- 8:07Speaker 4: We're the building.
- 8:08Speaker 3: We are the building.
- 8:09Speaker 2: All right, let's start about Let's start with the mindset moment.
- 8:14Speaker 2: When we talk about mindset, that shapes how we experience life, right,
- 8:18Speaker 2: and as an artist, I know it takes a different
- 8:21Speaker 2: type of mindset two do what you've done thus far
- 8:26Speaker 2: and still have the love for it.
- 8:28Speaker 3: So what mindset shift.
- 8:31Speaker 2: Change the way you approach life when it came to
- 8:34Speaker 2: your music.
- 8:36Speaker 4: That's a tough question.
- 8:39Speaker 5: I went through a couple of shifts, and I'll be honest,
- 8:42Speaker 5: the most important one for the musician and the artist
- 8:46Speaker 5: that I am today was shifting from saying hey, I
- 8:50Speaker 5: really want to do this music or be money driven,
- 8:55Speaker 5: because if your money driven, then sometimes you end up
- 8:57Speaker 5: chasing trends. And you know, listening to people who aren't
- 9:02Speaker 5: in that art studio or the studio with you, right
- 9:05Speaker 5: and that creation phase, they're just focusing on marketing and
- 9:09Speaker 5: promotion only. And so you know that changed. People's tastes
- 9:13Speaker 5: changed frequently, and so if you're changing your style and
- 9:17Speaker 5: your art to appease those taste makers, then you're gonna
- 9:23Speaker 5: burn out. And I reached the point where I was
- 9:26Speaker 5: signed to a deal and it didn't work out in
- 9:30Speaker 5: my favor. But we were doing some things to try
- 9:33Speaker 5: to get some more mainstream radio play and things like that.
- 9:38Speaker 5: You know, we'll say early two thousands, and so I
- 9:41Speaker 5: had a shifting point where I stopped doing music altogether.
- 9:45Speaker 5: I was kind of over the industry, if that makes sense, right,
- 9:49Speaker 5: and I did. I'll say I forgot a few of
- 9:51Speaker 5: my underground roots along the way. And so being away
- 9:56Speaker 5: from creating and taking in other you know, I started
- 10:01Speaker 5: going to other people's concerts. You know, when you're in
- 10:03Speaker 5: your own lane, you're like everybody's competition. I don't have
- 10:07Speaker 5: time to worry about what's going on over here, what's
- 10:09Speaker 5: going on over there, And so then you lose your
- 10:12Speaker 5: art appreciation for the peeriods and your peers and other
- 10:17Speaker 5: artists who are just in the ecosystem, right. And so,
- 10:22Speaker 5: you know, I went back to just going to concerts.
- 10:24Speaker 5: I went back to just listening to anything that caught
- 10:27Speaker 5: my ear, and you know, I started doing that appreciation phase.
- 10:32Speaker 5: I started missing the creation. And so I told myself,
- 10:35Speaker 5: but if I'm going to do this again, because I
- 10:39Speaker 5: was out for about two years, I'm going to do
- 10:41Speaker 5: it because I love it. I'm going to do it
- 10:44Speaker 5: for the people who I know appreciate, you know, my
- 10:47Speaker 5: talents and how I do my music, and that's it.
- 10:51Speaker 5: And I'm not gonna and I'm not going to chase money.
- 10:54Speaker 5: I'm going to do it because I just truly want
- 10:57Speaker 5: to do it right, kind of like treating it like
- 10:59Speaker 5: a hobby. And so that was my big mindset shift.
- 11:04Speaker 5: And so you know, I also know my core supporters.
- 11:07Speaker 5: They're still with me, you know, and they actually helped
- 11:11Speaker 5: spread the good news and the word to others who
- 11:14Speaker 5: are like minded. So I never have to like go
- 11:17Speaker 5: outside of myself, you know, as far as in that
- 11:21Speaker 5: creative face and just enjoying it, just kind of getting
- 11:25Speaker 5: out of just I mean, you get into like a
- 11:28Speaker 5: rat race, just like any other job.
- 11:30Speaker 4: And I was like, I don't want that. If I'm
- 11:32Speaker 4: going to do music again, I want.
- 11:34Speaker 5: To truly enjoy it and enjoy the journey and enjoy everybody,
- 11:38Speaker 5: you know, who I meet alone this journey, good, bad
- 11:41Speaker 5: and ugly. But you know, if it's not about the money,
- 11:45Speaker 5: then I can enjoy it so much more. And that
- 11:47Speaker 5: was the best thing I could have ever done.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Absolutely, And as a creative I think that when you
- 11:53Speaker 2: do anything chasing money.
- 11:55Speaker 3: It takes out.
- 11:57Speaker 2: The love for sort of definitely, you kind of like
- 12:02Speaker 2: lose yourself to that's what that's what, like you said,
- 12:04Speaker 2: a rat race.
- 12:05Speaker 3: That's what I want. I need to make sure that
- 12:06Speaker 3: I'm here.
- 12:07Speaker 2: I'm here, I'm here because I'm getting paid this, this
- 12:09Speaker 2: and this and that, creating that burnout.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Yeah, and then.
- 12:15Speaker 2: You just have all type of other chaos, chaos that ensues.
- 12:19Speaker 2: And so I'm glad that you had that mindset shift.
- 12:22Speaker 3: Are multiple shifts.
- 12:23Speaker 2: I think that when you're a creative, you have to
- 12:25Speaker 2: have multiple mindset shifts so that you can stay true
- 12:31Speaker 2: to who you are and keep the love for what
- 12:34Speaker 2: it is that you're actually striving to do.
- 12:37Speaker 5: Yes, definitely, And you know, I was blessed because around
- 12:40Speaker 5: that same time, I had my first child, and so
- 12:44Speaker 5: I was really slowing down. I had a whole career
- 12:49Speaker 5: shift to go along with that too. You know, I
- 12:52Speaker 5: answer my call to go into education full time.
- 12:56Speaker 4: And you know, it's just there was a lot of.
- 12:59Speaker 5: Shifting going on, you know, fatherhood being more responsible, you know,
- 13:04Speaker 5: with my craft, with my art being more I guess
- 13:08Speaker 5: aware of my time, you know, because when you have kids,
- 13:12Speaker 5: you know your time is really not yours, right, and
- 13:15Speaker 5: so everything has to be meaningful, you know, even like
- 13:17Speaker 5: changing the way I scheduled the venues that have performed at,
- 13:21Speaker 5: you know, doing more park shows, doing more family oriented
- 13:26Speaker 5: you know events versus late night you know, club events,
- 13:30Speaker 5: things like that, and so that's a whole that's a
- 13:32Speaker 5: different mind ship. But it's great because that helps with
- 13:38Speaker 5: just preservation and longevity. And I think a lot of
- 13:41Speaker 5: other people who are looking for something pure they appreciate that,
- 13:46Speaker 5: you know. I mean, I've been invited to go to
- 13:49Speaker 5: so many places that I probably wouldn't have been invited
- 13:52Speaker 5: to before I had that ship, so you know, and
- 13:56Speaker 5: I try to encourage others to kind of, you know,
- 13:59Speaker 5: consider some other avenues too, because you know, there's many
- 14:03Speaker 5: other avenues and so it's not just one way to
- 14:05Speaker 5: do it, and it's not just one way to enjoy yourself.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Absolutely, it's almost kind of like that no new friends
- 14:12Speaker 2: type deal. Why not you might miss out on something
- 14:15Speaker 2: that you would never have considered or came across. We're
- 14:21Speaker 2: ever evolving, and people, whether we want to believe it
- 14:25Speaker 2: or not, people teach us stuff because they're always watching
- 14:29Speaker 2: and if they're always watching. We're always watching, or at
- 14:32Speaker 2: least we should be pay attention.
- 14:34Speaker 4: Pay attention, be mindful, like you have to you have
- 14:37Speaker 4: to be in the moment.
- 14:38Speaker 5: And awareness is so people like stay woke, but you know,
- 14:42Speaker 5: you got to be mindful first, and you got to
- 14:44Speaker 5: be aware of you know where you are, and you
- 14:47Speaker 5: know just the whole surrounding, you know. And so we
- 14:52Speaker 5: can apply that to many different ways. You know, you're
- 14:54Speaker 5: in the middle of New York City, stuck on your phone,
- 14:56Speaker 5: but everybody else's moving, right, can't miss the moment?
- 15:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I can't missed the moment absolutely, But what belief
- 15:04Speaker 2: did you have to unlearn to grow and change your mindset?
- 15:12Speaker 5: Kind of like there's one way thinking because all right,
- 15:15Speaker 5: so when I was studying in the in the nineties
- 15:19Speaker 5: of just hip hop music and just the industry, because
- 15:23Speaker 5: I mean back then, it's like, yeah, you gotta get
- 15:26Speaker 5: a record deal, you gotta do this, do that, you know,
- 15:29Speaker 5: go here, go there, got to go to La gotta
- 15:32Speaker 5: go to New York.
- 15:33Speaker 4: Just those I guess norms. You know, I have to
- 15:36Speaker 4: learn a lot of that.
- 15:38Speaker 5: I do want to thank my boy master P you know,
- 15:41Speaker 5: because I was actually in New Orleans between New Orleans
- 15:43Speaker 5: and Bad Roots around the time when people was in
- 15:45Speaker 5: that rooms and doing things all around like really blowing up.
- 15:50Speaker 5: And you know, he helped many of us think independently
- 15:55Speaker 5: and think about you don't have to do what the
- 15:59Speaker 5: book said can You can make your own lane.
- 16:02Speaker 4: You can do whatever you want to do your own way.
- 16:05Speaker 5: You just have to apply, you know, some thought and
- 16:08Speaker 5: a lot of effort into you know, the avenue that
- 16:12Speaker 5: you're gonna push it in. And so a lot of
- 16:14Speaker 5: that kind of came back to me when we'll say
- 16:18Speaker 5: two thousand and seven, two thousand and eight, when I
- 16:21Speaker 5: was reevaluating what I wanted to do and how I
- 16:24Speaker 5: wanted to do it, you know, and just knowing that
- 16:27Speaker 5: it's okay not to be like everybody else, because really
- 16:31Speaker 5: it's not everybody else.
- 16:32Speaker 4: It's like five percent, right, you know, everybody else is.
- 16:36Speaker 5: Really trying and trying to like, you know, front of
- 16:39Speaker 5: their market or just make a name or you know,
- 16:42Speaker 5: be heard, make some noise.
- 16:43Speaker 4: Right.
- 16:44Speaker 5: So and so then that ship comes to with just
- 16:48Speaker 5: to change of technology, you know, and the way consumers
- 16:51Speaker 5: consume music and.
- 16:52Speaker 4: All that good stuff.
- 16:53Speaker 5: Because right now, I mean, musicians don't make any money
- 16:57Speaker 5: off of like the actual music, right. Everything else is
- 17:01Speaker 5: around opportunities and sponsorships and festivals and you know, and
- 17:05Speaker 5: that's if you are doing it on your own and
- 17:07Speaker 5: not linked to somebody else who pays you after they
- 17:10Speaker 5: get paid, right, So all of those good things, you know,
- 17:14Speaker 5: or contributors.
- 17:16Speaker 2: Okay, what life experience forced you to grow the most?
- 17:23Speaker 5: Oh, we'll say probably probably parenting.
- 17:30Speaker 4: Same probably parenting.
- 17:33Speaker 1: You know.
- 17:33Speaker 5: I think my first child was definitely playing, you know,
- 17:38Speaker 5: but it's like it's a lot of thought that goes
- 17:40Speaker 5: involved with that, and you know, you're trying to figure
- 17:44Speaker 5: out how to mode or or care for this new
- 17:50Speaker 5: individual without dropping them.
- 17:53Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, so that's the first one that comes
- 17:56Speaker 4: to mind.
- 17:57Speaker 5: I got off the phone with my youngest son right
- 18:00Speaker 5: before we got on today, so just thinking about okay,
- 18:04Speaker 5: like they' see okay, all right, good, you know, making
- 18:08Speaker 5: sure that I continue to just guide and you know,
- 18:12Speaker 5: without being too harsh, but also empathize and be understanding too.
- 18:18Speaker 5: So yeah, that's that's probably the biggest, the biggest factor,
- 18:22Speaker 5: I mean, outside of that, really just you know, trying
- 18:27Speaker 5: to be just just an independent young adult, you know.
- 18:32Speaker 5: I think about when I was twenty two to twenty three.
- 18:36Speaker 5: I thought I knew a whole lot. Run into some walls,
- 18:40Speaker 5: you might burn the bridge here or there, but at
- 18:42Speaker 5: the same time you got all this energy, and so
- 18:46Speaker 5: learning how to channel that energy to be sustainable, you know.
- 18:52Speaker 5: So like that young people say like you don't want
- 18:54Speaker 5: to crash out, like it can happen.
- 18:57Speaker 4: It happens, you know, and it could be emotional, it
- 19:00Speaker 4: be physical.
- 19:00Speaker 5: I mean I went through bankruptcy at a very young age,
- 19:04Speaker 5: had a really interesting sequence of events that caused me
- 19:08Speaker 5: to just hit the wall and then have to do
- 19:11Speaker 5: a hard restart quickly. And so you know, that's some
- 19:16Speaker 5: other a group of another group of lessons that I've
- 19:18Speaker 5: learned from. But just being resilient and knowing that you know,
- 19:23Speaker 5: I know my purpose and I know you know, every
- 19:27Speaker 5: season isn't going to be.
- 19:29Speaker 4: Dismal, right m hm.
- 19:32Speaker 5: And so just learning from that and really telling myself
- 19:34Speaker 5: like it's truly like I'm never going to be broken again,
- 19:37Speaker 5: and this is this is how I know this. I
- 19:40Speaker 5: have to make sure that I'm mindful and I make
- 19:43Speaker 5: good decisions financially no matter how much money I had, right,
- 19:48Speaker 5: And so that's that's a part of being a responsible
- 19:51Speaker 5: for adult you know.
- 19:53Speaker 3: Mm hmm.
- 19:54Speaker 2: Absolutely, And I'm glad that you say that, because somebody
- 19:56Speaker 2: really needs to hit it. Every season is not going
- 19:59Speaker 2: to be a winning season, not in the way you think,
- 20:02Speaker 2: because sometimes our winning season is just.
- 20:05Speaker 3: Being able to get up in our right mind every day.
- 20:08Speaker 4: Amen, Amen, being able to.
- 20:12Speaker 6: Buy this gas that's hot, and so you got going
- 20:16Speaker 6: from Yeah.
- 20:19Speaker 7: You know, just it's just so many things that we
- 20:23Speaker 7: overlook that we looks as small with their massive.
- 20:30Speaker 2: In the grand scheme of things. So I challenge you
- 20:34Speaker 2: to be grateful, wake up each day that you are
- 20:37Speaker 2: blessed to have with an attitude of gratitude, and see
- 20:40Speaker 2: how your life would change from day to day. Like
- 20:44Speaker 2: I didn't want to get up this morning and go
- 20:45Speaker 2: work out, but I'm like, you're training for a marathon.
- 20:49Speaker 8: You gotta get your body in condition because it's a marathon.
- 20:54Speaker 8: You got you gotta be able to Yeah. So I
- 21:01Speaker 8: did that and I felt great after that.
- 21:03Speaker 2: So yeah, it's it's you have to challenge yourself because
- 21:07Speaker 2: being in that comfort zone, growth doesn't happen there.
- 21:11Speaker 4: Definitely.
- 21:12Speaker 3: Yeah, all right, we're gonna go to.
- 21:14Speaker 2: The reality check, right, okay, because growth sounds good but
- 21:19Speaker 2: truth behind If there's no truth behind it.
- 21:22Speaker 3: It can be uncomfortable.
- 21:25Speaker 2: But it's sometimes meant to be uncomfortable, you know, because
- 21:29Speaker 2: you know, growth happens when you're uncomfortable.
- 21:31Speaker 3: It has happened for me that way.
- 21:33Speaker 2: If you're if you're growing and you ain't uncomfortable, let
- 21:35Speaker 2: us know how you're doing it.
- 21:36Speaker 4: We want to know you're not You might not be
- 21:39Speaker 4: growing as as rapid as you think you.
- 21:41Speaker 2: Are, right, So what's an uncomfortable truth people need to
- 21:48Speaker 2: hear about when it comes to personal growth and mindset?
- 21:52Speaker 5: Mm hmmm, we'll talk about friends since we're since we're
- 22:01Speaker 5: having conversation about people. You know, if y'all not going together,
- 22:07Speaker 5: you can all grow someone. And that's okay because some
- 22:12Speaker 5: people are very comfortable and where they're at and where they.
- 22:16Speaker 4: Are right and they're okay with that.
- 22:20Speaker 5: People like you and I like, we're always pushing the envelope,
- 22:24Speaker 5: you know, because not only were artists, but you know,
- 22:27Speaker 5: we just think differently. Everybody didn't understand why we do
- 22:31Speaker 5: the things we do, but it's not for them to understand, right,
- 22:34Speaker 5: and so as we, I guess get older in adulthood,
- 22:39Speaker 5: I understand why with my parents. It was a certain
- 22:43Speaker 5: point in time where they had a lot of friends.
- 22:45Speaker 5: Now I remember seeing all these people. I know that person,
- 22:48Speaker 5: and then it came to a time where they didn't
- 22:51Speaker 5: see them anymore. Might see one or two and every
- 22:54Speaker 5: now and then. So it's just like, okay, what happens?
- 22:58Speaker 5: Did your parents get more white as they're on their spending?
- 23:01Speaker 5: You know, when the when all the drinks stopped flowing
- 23:05Speaker 5: sometimes some of the friends stopped going, you know, and
- 23:07Speaker 5: that and that's real.
- 23:09Speaker 4: You so you.
- 23:09Speaker 5: Got to know, like, okay, where everybody like comes in
- 23:14Speaker 5: at you know, some such and such aunties, such and
- 23:17Speaker 5: such house was the party house, but nobody goes there anymore.
- 23:21Speaker 4: You know, Like what happened? Did she grow out of that?
- 23:23Speaker 4: You know?
- 23:24Speaker 5: Was that for that moment in time where that's what
- 23:27Speaker 5: we like to do but I don't like, I don't
- 23:28Speaker 5: like to do that anymore, or they don't like to
- 23:30Speaker 5: do that anymore, and I'm still hanging out alone right
- 23:34Speaker 5: So that I think that's that's that's big, you know,
- 23:38Speaker 5: in adulthood, just understanding when to say when and it's okay,
- 23:43Speaker 5: you know, we're not twisting people's arm to come with
- 23:46Speaker 5: us or we're not twisting people's arm and knocking at
- 23:49Speaker 5: the door to come in to their home or wherever
- 23:52Speaker 5: they are. You know, if they wantn't be there, it'll
- 23:56Speaker 5: organically work itself out.
- 23:58Speaker 4: That's what I truly believe in.
- 24:01Speaker 5: And so you just have tears of friends and sometimes
- 24:04Speaker 5: it turned into acquaintances and back and forth. And I mean,
- 24:08Speaker 5: like you said, they're no new friends. Really, I mean,
- 24:11Speaker 5: if you're still growing and you have mentorship and all
- 24:15Speaker 5: these things that you inspired to do, I mean, your
- 24:17Speaker 5: new friend actually might be eighty.
- 24:19Speaker 4: Years old, right, you know, because you have.
- 24:22Speaker 5: An old mind in the old spirit, and they want
- 24:25Speaker 5: to keep sprinkling seasoning on you.
- 24:27Speaker 4: But we have to be open to receive that.
- 24:30Speaker 3: M Yeah, sprinkling seasoning.
- 24:33Speaker 2: I like that. I like that.
- 24:34Speaker 4: I like that.
- 24:37Speaker 2: Yeah, And I think it's okay. Like everybody comes into
- 24:40Speaker 2: your life for a reason, a season, a less and
- 24:41Speaker 2: a blessing, a lifetime or not. And I found that
- 24:46Speaker 2: within the last ten years my circle has become a
- 24:50Speaker 2: c mhm. I can see them, they can see me,
- 24:55Speaker 2: and it's all good.
- 24:56Speaker 4: And it's all good, yeah, all good.
- 25:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:01Speaker 2: So what belief or habit keeps people stuck the lonest
- 25:04Speaker 2: in your opinion.
- 25:10Speaker 5: I don't know if it's a habit, but I do,
- 25:13Speaker 5: all right, So I'll go with the behavior first. I
- 25:15Speaker 5: think sometimes people get in their own way, and so
- 25:20Speaker 5: I have a friend who always says, you know, you
- 25:22Speaker 5: have to speak things into existence, you know, because sometimes
- 25:27Speaker 5: the habit is it just keep harping on are vocalized, verbalizing,
- 25:34Speaker 5: you know, that feeling that you're feeling right here in
- 25:37Speaker 5: the present, and we know that's not going to last forever.
- 25:41Speaker 5: But you can't keep saying that because now those sayings
- 25:46Speaker 5: and those spirits are blocking the new blessings. And so
- 25:51Speaker 5: the biggest challenge is, you know, really trying to look
- 25:56Speaker 5: over the mountain and understand you know, what you are
- 26:00Speaker 5: imagine or what you envision or what God has planet
- 26:03Speaker 5: you know in your spirit that the other.
- 26:05Speaker 4: Side might look like, you know.
- 26:08Speaker 5: And that's that's just coming from I mean, yeah, from
- 26:11Speaker 5: a from a Christian walk, but also you know, just
- 26:15Speaker 5: in general. I mean I really think about you know,
- 26:18Speaker 5: when they were walking with Moses, you know a lot
- 26:23Speaker 5: of the folks just didn't get it. You know, they
- 26:28Speaker 5: believe what they saw, but now what they heard and yeah,
- 26:33Speaker 5: and so that faith journey. That faith journey is a struggle.
- 26:37Speaker 3: It is really is, you know.
- 26:39Speaker 5: And so people just having habits of Okay, if you're
- 26:43Speaker 5: going to church, just going as a routine but.
- 26:48Speaker 4: Not having a solid purpose behind why you're going. And
- 26:53Speaker 4: if you're.
- 26:54Speaker 5: Going, are you bringing something to the community, you know,
- 26:58Speaker 5: because the service us for sharing. You know you're going
- 27:02Speaker 5: to receive something, but hopefully you bring something that way,
- 27:07Speaker 5: you can you know, in that fellowship, right that's.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Important, or you leave with something that you can pour
- 27:14Speaker 2: into somebody else. Mm hmmm, yeah, And I think that you.
- 27:19Speaker 3: Know, yep, you really do.
- 27:22Speaker 2: You really have to you have to have it all
- 27:25Speaker 2: about For me, it's all about having h a personal
- 27:28Speaker 2: walk with God. Mh you have you cannot have that.
- 27:32Speaker 2: You can't have anybody else's walk. You have to have
- 27:36Speaker 2: your relationship your walk. And it's not going to be easy.
- 27:40Speaker 3: All the time.
- 27:41Speaker 2: But we also have to know that even when we
- 27:44Speaker 2: get tired, He carries us through it. The journey is
- 27:49Speaker 2: not meant to be easy, but you have to keep going,
- 27:53Speaker 2: keep pushing, keep fighting so that you can reach that
- 27:57Speaker 2: greatness that is inside of all of us.
- 28:01Speaker 5: Right, Like I mean, like you said, like he keeps
- 28:04Speaker 5: waking you up. That's the memo right there. It ain't
- 28:09Speaker 5: you got work.
- 28:10Speaker 4: Not over, you got work to do.
- 28:14Speaker 3: I love it.
- 28:14Speaker 2: Okay, So when it comes to life, what's one hard
- 28:19Speaker 2: life lesson that shaped who you are today?
- 28:25Speaker 5: I just kind of told somebody this one, so, okay,
- 28:28Speaker 5: give you some background. I'm a assistant principal of an
- 28:31Speaker 5: elementary school and we're doing really well, and so I
- 28:36Speaker 5: deal with young people who are on the brink of
- 28:38Speaker 5: greatness every day. Well, that'd be my pre paid babies
- 28:42Speaker 5: who are about to jump into kindergarten and be great
- 28:45Speaker 5: on my fourth fifth grade, babies who going to middle
- 28:47Speaker 5: school and never coming back. And so I can relate
- 28:52Speaker 5: to those those kids because I think about seeing them.
- 28:55Speaker 4: I think about things that my father.
- 28:57Speaker 5: You know, told me when I was their age. I
- 29:00Speaker 5: was blessed to have my dad with me. He's still
- 29:04Speaker 5: with me, right. Everybody didn't have that. So that's sorts
- 29:09Speaker 5: of guidance, you know, from a from a man who
- 29:12Speaker 5: knows himself. That's that's rare sometimes, right, everybody's not blessed.
- 29:17Speaker 5: And so people don't believe I was a very I
- 29:22Speaker 5: was a boy who liked wrestling and some violent stuff.
- 29:27Speaker 5: You know, because at that you know, TV was interesting
- 29:30Speaker 5: back in the films were interesting back in the day,
- 29:32Speaker 5: Like PG wasn't the same PG that it is now.
- 29:36Speaker 5: Like they had guns and all kinds of stuff like
- 29:38Speaker 5: whatever you want to call it, right.
- 29:40Speaker 4: And so.
- 29:43Speaker 5: You know, I had a I had a big hot temper,
- 29:46Speaker 5: let's just say that. And you know I like to fight.
- 29:50Speaker 5: I was I thought I was tough, and so my
- 29:53Speaker 5: dad put me deside one day he said, hey, listen,
- 29:55Speaker 5: like you got to stop this, you know, and I
- 29:58Speaker 5: remember this this was late eight. She was like, hey,
- 30:01Speaker 5: there are people out here who they don't like to
- 30:03Speaker 5: fight their and they just shoot.
- 30:05Speaker 4: They will shoot you. And he kind of left it
- 30:08Speaker 4: at that, and that advice really stuck with me, you
- 30:12Speaker 4: know for a very long time.
- 30:14Speaker 5: You know, It's something that I stared with with some
- 30:16Speaker 5: of my young people, you know, because I think that.
- 30:20Speaker 4: Has you know, that message goes a long way. Everybody
- 30:24Speaker 4: didn't grow up like me.
- 30:26Speaker 5: Everybody who has grown up hadn't been introduced to spirituality
- 30:32Speaker 5: right and morel and things like that. And so because
- 30:36Speaker 5: in my heart I believe in Duson and I kill
- 30:39Speaker 5: the next man might have never heard that before. You
- 30:44Speaker 5: see what I'm saying.
- 30:45Speaker 4: That's dangerous, but it's true.
- 30:48Speaker 5: And it's real, and so you know, just those words
- 30:51Speaker 5: really just helped me to just kind of channel any
- 30:55Speaker 5: anger that I might have had and just learning how
- 30:58Speaker 5: to like, you know, do better for me myself in
- 31:01Speaker 5: situations with dealing with other people.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Absolutely, and people who don't fear God are dangerous, yeah,
- 31:11Speaker 2: because that means they don't care nothing about you.
- 31:15Speaker 3: So yeah, that's it's scary. It is scary.
- 31:21Speaker 2: All right, Let's bring it home with the action step.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Because mindset without action doesn't create change, right, So what
- 31:28Speaker 2: is one action step one of our listeners are many
- 31:33Speaker 2: for that matter, can take today to shift their mindset.
- 31:37Speaker 5: I think a big action step is to actually do
- 31:40Speaker 5: some research on emotional intelligence. And so most intelligence is
- 31:46Speaker 5: just you knowing. You know, what your triggers are are,
- 31:51Speaker 5: How are you truly feeling at a particular time, you know,
- 31:56Speaker 5: before you go into a conversation or a situation that
- 32:02Speaker 5: you know, like let's say you're going to work, right,
- 32:05Speaker 5: but before you get to work, you need to do
- 32:07Speaker 5: some type of research on yourself. Take an account of
- 32:12Speaker 5: where am I today at seven am? You know, and
- 32:15Speaker 5: behind me you got these happy faces and stuff and
- 32:18Speaker 5: that that helps with that kind of stuff. I mean,
- 32:20Speaker 5: it's apps for that, but just really kind of knowing
- 32:22Speaker 5: what are the ranges of emotions and sometimes we don't
- 32:25Speaker 5: talk about that, but you know, just having that conversation
- 32:29Speaker 5: with yourself and learning more about you know, what your
- 32:33Speaker 5: reds are and what your greens are, what makes you blue?
- 32:36Speaker 5: And you know what makes you keeps you mellow? You know,
- 32:39Speaker 5: where do you where do you want to go to
- 32:42Speaker 5: you know, truly feel happy and not saying you have
- 32:45Speaker 5: to spend money to feel happy, but you know, just
- 32:48Speaker 5: what are those things? Because the more emotionally intelligence you
- 32:51Speaker 5: are for yourself, then that actually can help other people,
- 32:56Speaker 5: you know. And I think when when in the community
- 32:59Speaker 5: talk about conflict and stuff like that, that's a big
- 33:02Speaker 5: part of it, you know. I mean we could be upset,
- 33:05Speaker 5: we could be angry, be disappointed, but you know, how
- 33:09Speaker 5: does that really feel?
- 33:10Speaker 4: How does that really look?
- 33:11Speaker 5: And then like you said, what are the next steps
- 33:15Speaker 5: you know to getting too more balance?
- 33:19Speaker 4: You know? Place? Yeah?
- 33:21Speaker 2: Right, yeah, I love that, Like take self inventory. You
- 33:26Speaker 2: might be having a bad day because it happened, but
- 33:29Speaker 2: don't go mess with somebody else's day. Yeah, you know,
- 33:35Speaker 2: live life on purpose. You have to look at the
- 33:39Speaker 2: right side of things. Yeah, I didn't sleep well last night. No,
- 33:41Speaker 2: I didn't find my favorite shoes to wear today. But
- 33:45Speaker 2: go I'm still here. So ask yourself in that moment,
- 33:49Speaker 2: what am I grateful for? Even though I'm missing those
- 33:54Speaker 2: things that I like to have every day to function.
- 33:59Speaker 2: And when you take the time to do that, you
- 34:02Speaker 2: just see life different. But that goes with a healing journey.
- 34:07Speaker 2: You have to have some type of mindset of prosperity
- 34:13Speaker 2: and abundance. And I just don't want to be an asshole.
- 34:18Speaker 3: We have enough of that.
- 34:20Speaker 2: You're not contribute, please keep it.
- 34:24Speaker 3: Think that the world don't need anymore. We have enough.
- 34:27Speaker 3: Trust me. Yes, but I'm glad about that.
- 34:30Speaker 2: And we didn't talking about love too much.
- 34:32Speaker 3: So I'm gonna ask you this question.
- 34:34Speaker 2: What's one thing someone can start doing today to build
- 34:38Speaker 2: healthier relationships? Are deep in self love?
- 34:45Speaker 4: So she went two sides.
- 34:46Speaker 5: She said, build healthy relationships and deep herself up. I mean,
- 34:53Speaker 5: I'll just I'll start off small. I think given compliments
- 34:58Speaker 5: is big. To give a compliment takes a lot of humility,
- 35:03Speaker 5: takes a lot of vulnerability because everybody doesn't have to
- 35:06Speaker 5: accept the compliment, but just know that when you give
- 35:09Speaker 5: the compliment, it's coming from a pure place and the
- 35:13Speaker 5: person who you're giving the compliment to mate. Although you
- 35:17Speaker 5: might assume like, oh yeah, what they you know, they
- 35:20Speaker 5: know that you know they're doing well, and they know
- 35:24Speaker 5: that they look at certain way hybrid is. But if
- 35:27Speaker 5: it comes from you and your important person to them,
- 35:30Speaker 5: they're gonna receive it, you know better, and it's going
- 35:32Speaker 5: to sound like new. And so that's going to actually
- 35:35Speaker 5: help you because you know, you really put some thought
- 35:39Speaker 5: into that, and nothing's wrong with putting good energy into
- 35:43Speaker 5: the atmosphere. I mean, I find joy in compliment complimenting
- 35:50Speaker 5: other artists all the time. Like I went to a
- 35:53Speaker 5: piano recital. I haven't been to a piano recital a
- 35:55Speaker 5: long time. I went to one Sunday, and you know,
- 36:00Speaker 5: I went just to just hear. I wanted to just listen,
- 36:03Speaker 5: have have a ninety minute listening session just to clear
- 36:06Speaker 5: my mind. And you know, I witness some great some
- 36:10Speaker 5: great things, right, some great sounds from people I never met.
- 36:13Speaker 4: You know, a knew one, but everybody else never met
- 36:16Speaker 4: and just to.
- 36:16Speaker 5: Just you know, let them know that I'm I'm grateful
- 36:19Speaker 5: to be in the house to observe your talent. But also,
- 36:23Speaker 5: you know, keep up the good work. You know it
- 36:25Speaker 5: sounds great, good job. Things like that that makes people
- 36:28Speaker 5: feel good.
- 36:30Speaker 2: You never know how right it does make people feel
- 36:34Speaker 2: like wow, yeah, yeah, you just have to everything ain't
- 36:40Speaker 2: about you. It takes nothing to smile at somebody to say, oh,
- 36:46Speaker 2: that's a nice dress, girl, you wearing that dress?
- 36:49Speaker 4: Yeah, you know the top.
- 36:51Speaker 5: The sad part is there are many people, and I
- 36:55Speaker 5: don't know if it's just a twenty twenty sixteen or
- 37:00Speaker 5: just a generational thing, it's a lot of people who
- 37:02Speaker 5: don't know how.
- 37:03Speaker 4: To even accept the compliment.
- 37:04Speaker 5: Yeah, you're right, you know, they take it as an offense,
- 37:07Speaker 5: like you know, you want something from me, or you know,
- 37:10Speaker 5: you have some type of ulterior motive, and like, no,
- 37:12Speaker 5: I'm just a genuinely you know, delightful person and that's it.
- 37:19Speaker 4: But you know, that's the word we're living in right now.
- 37:22Speaker 2: Where we're living in, and it's sad because you have
- 37:25Speaker 2: people that has made that the new norm and I
- 37:27Speaker 2: hate it. I can I just pay you a compliment? No,
- 37:31Speaker 2: I don't want anything from you.
- 37:36Speaker 4: Okay, my own.
- 37:40Speaker 3: Right. Absolutely.
- 37:42Speaker 2: Okay, So if if all of the listeners today wanted
- 37:46Speaker 2: to get acquainted with your work or find out who
- 37:50Speaker 2: you are as far as like an artist, how can
- 37:53Speaker 2: they get get get their hands on someone mister Jay's music.
- 37:57Speaker 5: Well, I have the one stop shot www dot mister
- 38:02Speaker 5: j dot bandcamp dot com. So it's spelled m r
- 38:06Speaker 5: j a I dot bandcamp dot com. And so have
- 38:10Speaker 5: over at this point twenty projects that are available for
- 38:15Speaker 5: digital download streaming. You know, you really it's a name
- 38:21Speaker 5: of your own price type model. The only price that's
- 38:25Speaker 5: really listed, I believe if you want to buy the
- 38:27Speaker 5: whole catalog of music in one shot, and so you
- 38:30Speaker 5: have all of them in one click.
- 38:32Speaker 4: But the cool part is you don't have to spend
- 38:34Speaker 4: any money at all.
- 38:35Speaker 5: So you put in zero, it's still going to send
- 38:38Speaker 5: you a digital download and the format of your choice,
- 38:41Speaker 5: and so you know it's direct the consumer. I if
- 38:45Speaker 5: you're joined most of the time, even if you put zero,
- 38:48Speaker 5: you can type in your email address and that'll put
- 38:51Speaker 5: you in contact with me. And so anything I have
- 38:53Speaker 5: going on, I let those supporters know about first, and
- 38:57Speaker 5: so you'll get a text, you'll.
- 38:58Speaker 4: Get an email and that's a beautiful thing.
- 39:00Speaker 5: I got a lot of music there, you know, the
- 39:03Speaker 5: newest project which is called before TikTok with My Baby,
- 39:09Speaker 5: that's the newest one. And then we have this remixed
- 39:11Speaker 5: album that's out right now for Infinite Thoughts, and so
- 39:15Speaker 5: those are doing really well and I'm happy about them.
- 39:18Speaker 5: And then those same tunes serve as the soundtrack for
- 39:22Speaker 5: the Live from Government Street movie as well. So I'm
- 39:27Speaker 5: just I'm really excited about what we have out there.
- 39:29Speaker 5: But definitely go to you know, the band camp website
- 39:33Speaker 5: and check out the tunes.
- 39:35Speaker 2: Absolutely, So before we wrap up, I always ask for
- 39:39Speaker 2: a mic drop moment. So when life challenges you and
- 39:45Speaker 2: love stretches you, what mindset keeps you grounded?
- 39:51Speaker 4: What life challenges you and love stretches you, what keeps
- 39:56Speaker 4: you grounded?
- 39:57Speaker 3: Mint keeps you grounded?
- 40:03Speaker 4: Reminding myself that I'm good enough.
- 40:06Speaker 5: And just you know, thanking God or you know strength
- 40:11Speaker 5: to still be able to make a difference, and also
- 40:15Speaker 5: you know, thanking him or just the opportunities. Oftentimes when
- 40:20Speaker 5: we blessed with lots of good opportunities, people call people
- 40:24Speaker 5: ask or not only favors, but you know, you just
- 40:28Speaker 5: might be in demand because you're doing good things, but
- 40:31Speaker 5: you just don't have enough time to you feel stretched,
- 40:34Speaker 5: you don't have enough time to be everywhere at the
- 40:35Speaker 5: same time, and so those are the times that I
- 40:38Speaker 5: could really relate to where it's just like, you know,
- 40:40Speaker 5: you just sit back and even if you have to
- 40:42Speaker 5: say no, you still thank God, like you know, thank
- 40:45Speaker 5: you for putting me in a position to even have
- 40:48Speaker 5: these conversations. And hopefully, you know, you'll provide time in
- 40:52Speaker 5: the future where you know, I can attend those events
- 40:56Speaker 5: or you know, do whatever I was being asked to do,
- 40:58Speaker 5: because when people will stop falling or asking for you,
- 41:03Speaker 5: then you might not be doing something right.
- 41:04Speaker 4: So you know, that's a blessing.
- 41:07Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 41:08Speaker 2: That has been the mic moment by mister Jay. Thank
- 41:13Speaker 2: you guys for tuning into this episode. If this conversation
- 41:17Speaker 2: spoke to you, made you feel a certain way or
- 41:21Speaker 2: just you know, went a little deep at some point,
- 41:25Speaker 2: go ahead and subscribe, share with a friend, follow.
- 41:29Speaker 3: And all the things right.
- 41:31Speaker 2: Remember, your story has power, your voice has purpose, and
- 41:36Speaker 2: your mindset can change everything. Keep growing, keep loving, and
- 41:41Speaker 2: keep your mindset strong. See you next time. Couple hugs,
- 41:45Speaker 2: and thank you for tuning in.
- 41:46Speaker 3: Again be ended with keep
