- Lucas: Luna, welcome back to Learn German with Fexingo. Luna: Hey Lucas! Ready to learn some more German. Lucas: Today we're tackling ordinal numbers — first, second, third, up to tenth. Luna: Ordinal numbers? Like when you're listing things in order? Lucas: Exactly. They're super useful for dates, rankings, floors in a building. Luna: Okay, I'm in. Let's start with 'first'. Lucas: Der erste. Say it with me: der erste. Luna: Der erste. Lucas: Perfect. Der erste. Now 'second' — der zweite. Luna: Der zweite. Lucas: Good. And 'third' — der dritte. Luna: Der dritte. Lucas: You've got it. So first three: der erste, der zweite, der dritte. Luna: Der erste, der zweite, der dritte. I like how they sound. Lucas: Now 'fourth' — der vierte. Luna: Der vierte. Lucas: And 'fifth' — der fünfte. Luna: Der fünfte. Lucas: Excellent. Let's do a quick recap: first to fifth. Luna: Der erste, der zweite, der dritte, der vierte, der fünfte. Lucas: Flawless! Now 'sixth' — der sechste. Luna: Der sechste. Lucas: Seventh — der siebte. Luna: Der siebte. Lucas: Eighth — der achte. Luna: Der achte. Lucas: Ninth — der neunte. Luna: Der neunte. Lucas: And tenth — der zehnte. Luna: Der zehnte. Lucas: So from sixth to tenth: der sechste, der siebte, der achte, der neunte, der zehnte. Luna: Der sechste, der siebte, der achte, der neunte, der zehnte. Got it. Lucas: Let's practice them all in order. Listen and repeat after me. Lucas: Der erste. Luna: Der erste. Lucas: Der zweite. Luna: Der zweite. Lucas: Der dritte. Luna: Der dritte. Lucas: Der vierte. Luna: Der vierte. Lucas: Der fünfte. Luna: Der fünfte. Lucas: Der sechste. Luna: Der sechste. Lucas: Der siebte. Luna: Der siebte. Lucas: Der achte. Luna: Der achte. Lucas: Der neunte. Luna: Der neunte. Lucas: Der zehnte. Luna: Der zehnte. Lucas: Now I'll say the English, you give me the German. First. Luna: Der erste. Lucas: Second. Luna: Der zweite. Lucas: Third. Luna: Der dritte. Lucas: Fourth. Luna: Der vierte. Lucas: Fifth. Luna: Der fünfte. Lucas: Sixth. Luna: Der sechste. Lucas: Seventh. Luna: Der siebte. Lucas: Eighth. Luna: Der achte. Lucas: Ninth. Luna: Der neunte. Lucas: Tenth. Luna: Der zehnte. Lucas: Wow, you did that perfectly. Luna: Thanks! It's actually kind of fun. But how do I use them in a sentence? Lucas: Great question. For example: 'Das ist der erste Tag.' That means 'That is the first day.' Luna: Das ist der erste Tag. Lucas: Or 'Er ist der zweite Mann.' He is the second man. Luna: Er ist der zweite Mann. Lucas: And 'Sie ist die dritte Frau.' She is the third woman. Luna: Sie ist die dritte Frau. Lucas: Notice the gender? Der for masculine, die for feminine, das for neuter. Luna: Right, because 'Tag' is masculine, 'Mann' is masculine, 'Frau' is feminine. Lucas: You're a natural. Let's try a few more. 'Das ist der vierte Monat.' That is the fourth month. Luna: Das ist der vierte Monat. Lucas: 'Er ist der fünfte König.' He is the fifth king. Luna: Er ist der fünfte König. Lucas: 'Sie ist die sechste Studentin.' She is the sixth student. Luna: Sie ist die sechste Studentin. Lucas: You see the pattern? The ordinal number agrees with the noun's gender. Luna: Yeah, so 'der siebte Hügel' — the seventh hill, since Hügel is masculine. Lucas: Exactly! Der siebte Hügel. Luna: And 'die achte Stunde' — the eighth hour, because Stunde is feminine. Lucas: Die achte Stunde. Perfect. Luna: And 'das neunte Jahr' — the ninth year, neuter. Lucas: Das neunte Jahr. You're killing it. Luna: This is actually sticking. I think the repetition helps. Lucas: That's the Fexingo way. And speaking of Fexingo, if you're finding these episodes helpful, there's a small way you can support us. Lucas: Der erste Läufer gewinnt. The first runner wins. Luna: Der erste Läufer gewinnt. Lucas: Der zweite Läufer ist auch schnell. The second runner is also fast. Luna: Der zweite Läufer ist auch schnell. Lucas: Der dritte Läufer kommt ins Ziel. The third runner crosses the finish line. Luna: Der dritte Läufer kommt ins Ziel. Lucas: Now you try. The fourth runner is tired. Luna: Der vierte Läufer ist müde. Lucas: Der vierte Läufer ist müde. Sehr gut. The fifth runner drinks water. Luna: Der fünfte Läufer trinkt Wasser. Lucas: Nice. The sixth runner is happy. Luna: Der sechste Läufer ist glücklich. Lucas: Perfect. Seventh runner falls. Luna: Der siebte Läufer fällt. Lucas: Oh no! The eighth runner helps him. Luna: Der achte Läufer hilft ihm. Lucas: The ninth runner cheers. Luna: Der neunte Läufer jubelt. Lucas: And the tenth runner finishes last. Luna: Der zehnte Läufer wird Letzter. Lucas: Great sentence! You used 'wird' — becomes. Luna: Yeah, der zehnte Läufer wird Letzter. I'm proud of that one. Lucas: You should be. Let's do a quick review all together one more time. Lucas: Der erste. Luna: Der erste. Lucas: Der zweite. Luna: Der zweite. Lucas: Der dritte. Luna: Der dritte. Lucas: Der vierte. Luna: Der vierte. Lucas: Der fünfte. Luna: Der fünfte. Lucas: Der sechste. Luna: Der sechste. Lucas: Der siebte. Luna: Der siebte. Lucas: Der achte. Luna: Der achte. Lucas: Der neunte. Luna: Der neunte. Lucas: Der zehnte. Luna: Der zehnte. And thank you listeners. Keep practicing and we'll see you next time. Luna: Bis zum nächsten Mal! Lucas: Bis dann!
