- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The feast of Saint Cyriacus, Largus, and Smaragdus. Martyrs. August 8 in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:22For today's feast, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes the following, Saint Cyriacus, a deacon of the Roman Church under Popes Marcellinus and Marcellus, was put to death in 03/2003 during Diocletian's persecution.
- 0:42He had 22 Christian companions among whom were Largus and Smaragdus. Saint Cyriacus is one of the 14 auxiliary saints. Today, under the rubrics before 1955, because the vigil of Saint Lawrence is impeded by Sunday, it is anticipated on Saturday. However, today's feast of Saint Cyriacus and Companions outranks the vigil. Therefore, the vigil is commemorated in the Mass and the last gospel is replaced with that of the vigil of Saint Lawrence.
- 1:28In the name of the father and of the son and of the holy ghost. Amen. The introit. Fear the Lord, all you his holy ones, for naught is lacking to those who fear him. The great grow poor and hungry, but those who seek the Lord want for no good thing.
- 1:55I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall be ever on my lips. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Fear the Lord all you his holy ones for naught is lacking to those who fear him.
- 2:24The great grow poor and hungry, but those who seek the Lord want for no good thing. The Collect, let us pray. O God, who grant us to celebrate the birthdays of your holy martyrs Cyriacus, Largus, and Smaragdus, grant us also to rejoice in their companionship, in eternal happiness. A commemoration of the vigil of Saint Lawrence. Heed our prayers, O Lord, and by the intercession of your blessed martyr, Lawrence, whose feast we anticipate, graciously grant us your everlasting mercy through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 3:28Amen. A lesson from the first letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Thessalonians. Brethren, we give thanks to God unceasingly that when we delivered the divine message to you you recognized it for what it is God's message not man's. It is God after all who manifests his power in you that you have learned to believe. You took for your model, brethren, the churches of God which are assembled in Judea in the name of Christ Jesus.
- 4:11You were treated by your own fellow countrymen as those churches were treated by the Jews. The men who killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets and persecuted us. The men who displease God and show themselves the enemies of mankind when they try to hinder us from preaching salvation to the Gentiles. They must always be filling up the measure of their sins and now it is God's final vengeance that has fallen upon them. The gradual, fear the Lord, all you his holy ones, for naught is lacking to those who fear him, but those who seek the Lord want for no good thing.
- 5:07Alleluia. Alleluia. The just shall shine and shall dart about as sparks through stubble forever. Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Mark.
- 5:29At that time Jesus said to his disciples, Go out over all the world and preach the gospel to the whole of creation. He who believes and is baptized will be saved. He who refuses belief will be condemned. Where believers go, these signs shall go with them. They will cast out devils in my name.
- 5:58They will speak in tongues that are strange to them. They will take up serpents in their hands and drink poisonous drafts without harm. They will lay their hands upon the sick and make them recover. The offertory. Be glad in the Lord and rejoice you just.
- 6:24Exalt all you upright of heart. The secret. May our service be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, and may it bring us salvation through the prayers of those on whose festival it is being offered. A commemoration of the vigil of Saint Lawrence. Graciously receive, O Lord, the sacrifice we offer to thee, and by the intercession of blessed Lawrence, thy martyr, do thou vouch safe to loose the bonds of our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
- 7:18Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify. We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee, while we say with lowly praise, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest.
- 8:20Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion, And these signs shall attend those who believe in me. They shall cast out devils and they shall lay hands upon the sick and they shall get well. The post communion.
- 8:49Let us pray. With our strength renewed from having shared in your sacred gift we beseech you, O Lord our God, that by the intercession of blessed Cyriacus, Largus, and Smaragdus, your martyrs, we may feel the benefit of the worship we are offering. A commemoration of the vigil of Saint Lawrence. Grant we beseech you, O Lord our God, that as we joyfully commemorate Saint Lawrence, your martyr in this life, so may we rejoice by beholding him in eternity through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 9:50The Last Gospel. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Mark. At that time, Jesus said to his disciples, if any man has a mind to come my way, let him renounce self and take up his cross and follow me. The man who tries to save his life shall lose it. It is the man who loses his life for my sake that will secure it.
- 10:22How is a man better for it if he gains the world at the cost of losing his own soul? For a man's soul, what price can be high enough? The son of man will come hereafter in his father's glory with his angels about him, and he will recompense everyone then according to his works. In the name of the father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
- 11:04Saint Cyriacus, pray for us. Saint Largus, pray for us. Saint Smaragdus, pray for us. Saint Lawrence, pray for us.
