- 0:37Speaker 2: inauguration which has taking place early tomorrow morning. Our time.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Elliott Smith is in with the weekend sports rap. It
- 0:44Speaker 2: was a big weekend of sailing in tennis and football
- 0:46Speaker 2: and some hilarious cricket in christ Church. Also this the
- 0:50Speaker 2: Minister of Economic Growth, Nikola Willis joins us to talk
- 0:53Speaker 2: about this new portfolio and what she plans to achieve
- 0:56Speaker 2: with it. And as usual, we head around the regions
- 0:59Speaker 2: this morning and international correspondent is Gal Downey from the UK.
- 1:05Speaker 1: The agenda.
- 1:06Speaker 2: It's Monday, the twentieth of January, after a delayed start
- 1:10Speaker 2: the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas's holding. With the first
- 1:13Speaker 2: hostages now released, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he
- 1:18Speaker 2: won't hesitate to return to fighting.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Both President Trump and Biden gave full backing to Israel's
- 1:24Speaker 3: right to return to fighting if Israel reaches the conclusion
- 1:28Speaker 3: that negotiations of the second stage are fruitless. If we
- 1:32Speaker 3: need to, we will do that with great force.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Before the ceasefire, an average of forty trucks daily were
- 1:38Speaker 2: entering Gaza, while the ceasefire agreement requires six hundred daily.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Protesters have stormed a court in South Korea after it
- 1:46Speaker 2: extended impeachment President John Supul's detention for up to twenty days.
- 1:52Speaker 2: Before the court decision, his lawyer said the president complied
- 1:55Speaker 2: with police questioning you, insincerely explained and answered questions on fact, relationships, evidence,
- 2:01Speaker 2: and legal principles.
- 2:02Speaker 1: There's nothing much we can say for now.
- 2:04Speaker 2: We will wait for the court to decide. Around forty
- 2:08Speaker 2: protesters were arrested, and wine sales in the US last
- 2:12Speaker 2: year dropped six percent from the year before. Experts point
- 2:16Speaker 2: to generational shifts in alcohol consumption, saying baby boomers embraced
- 2:20Speaker 2: wine in the industry assumed that that would continue. It's
- 2:24Speaker 2: a growing shift with global prices also on the decline.
- 2:27Speaker 2: The price of burgundy dropped fourteen percent in the year
- 2:30Speaker 2: to November, Bordeaux eleven percent, and vintage champagne nearly one
- 2:34Speaker 2: hundred percent.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Separating the fact from the fiction heads Fily edition with
- 2:40Speaker 1: one Room, Make Your Property Search Simple, news talks.
- 2:44Speaker 2: There be so interesting times for the one hundred and
- 2:47Speaker 2: seventy million Americans who used TikTok. Like yesterday, Chinese owners
- 2:51Speaker 2: Byte Dance. They did what they've been threatening to do,
- 2:53Speaker 2: and just hours before the federal ban was set to
- 2:56Speaker 2: take place, the at went dark and US users could
- 2:59Speaker 2: no longer access the platform to watch videos. A message
- 3:02Speaker 2: appeared saying sorry, TikTok isn't available right now, and then
- 3:05Speaker 2: went on to say we are fortunate that President Trump
- 3:08Speaker 2: has indicated that he will work with us on a solution. Now,
- 3:11Speaker 2: you'd think that this will put Trump in a little
- 3:13Speaker 2: bit of a tricky situation. I mean, once upon a
- 3:15Speaker 2: time he did try and ban TikTok and we Chat.
- 3:18Speaker 2: That was before he realized TikTok was good for winning
- 3:21Speaker 2: over young voters, but new tech loving Trump has indicated
- 3:25Speaker 2: in an interview with NBC News over the weekend that
- 3:27Speaker 2: he was considering granting a ninety day extension that might
- 3:31Speaker 2: allow TikTok to keep going beyond today. He even posted
- 3:36Speaker 2: save TikTok in a truth social post by Dance previously
- 3:40Speaker 2: said it wouldn't sell. But the TikTok CEO is expected
- 3:42Speaker 2: at Trump's inauguration with the prime seating location. So who
- 3:46Speaker 2: knows how this will play out. Will Trump's cozy new
- 3:49Speaker 2: relationship with tech billionaires sway him to act. I suppose
- 3:52Speaker 2: a big question for US as could it affect us well.
- 3:55Speaker 2: If TikTok refuses to sell and Trump does end up
- 3:58Speaker 2: in forcing the band, it might just be a matter
- 4:00Speaker 2: of time before the ban creeps around the world. The
- 4:04Speaker 2: app was banned by US lawmakers because they ruled it
- 4:07Speaker 2: a national security risk due to that they thought that
- 4:10Speaker 2: by dancers ties that were a bit too close to
- 4:12Speaker 2: the Chinese government. This is these are ties that denies.
- 4:15Speaker 2: But the US has a habit of lobbying allies on
- 4:18Speaker 2: security issues and their cyber policies, much like they did
- 4:21Speaker 2: with Huawei. So if you're a local content creator, that
- 4:25Speaker 2: can't imagine life without the app. You probably have your
- 4:28Speaker 2: eye on what's going on here. You may have to
- 4:30Speaker 2: do what all the US users are doing. They're promoting
- 4:33Speaker 2: their Insta handles and ironically joining the Chinese based video
- 4:38Speaker 2: platform Red Note. But hey, at the end of the day,
- 4:42Speaker 2: there are worse things in the world than waking up
- 4:44Speaker 2: to one less social media app. You're with early edition.
- 4:48Speaker 2: It is five to eleven, First with.
- 4:51Speaker 1: News, First with fews. It's early edition with one roof.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Make your property such simple, Newstalk said the.
- 4:59Speaker 2: It is five thirteen. Donald Trump will become President of
- 5:02Speaker 2: the United States in just over twenty four hours for
- 5:05Speaker 2: the second time. He's promised a speedy start to his
- 5:08Speaker 2: second term, saying he will conduct one hundred executive orders
- 5:11Speaker 2: on day one. Immigration issues will be one to watch
- 5:14Speaker 2: as well how he plans to resolve the possible shutdown
- 5:17Speaker 2: of TikTok in the States. He'll be taking the oath
- 5:20Speaker 2: of office inside the capital for the first time in decades.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Is dangerously cold weather hits Washington, DC. Joining me now
- 5:27Speaker 2: is Matt Terrell, the managing partner at Firehouse Strategies and
- 5:30Speaker 2: Marco Rubio's former chief of staff. Thanks for being with us, Matt.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Hey, great to be with you.
- 5:37Speaker 2: What are you expecting to see tomorrow?
- 5:40Speaker 4: Well, look, I think he's going to give a speech
- 5:42Speaker 4: for he's gonna be very honest about what he tens
- 5:44Speaker 4: to do, not just on day one of his presidency,
- 5:47Speaker 4: but for all four years of his presidency. And I
- 5:49Speaker 4: say that because throughout the campaign, who's very honest and
- 5:52Speaker 4: transparent about what he would do if elected. He's been elected,
- 5:55Speaker 4: and he'll be sworn in soon here as the next president.
- 5:59Speaker 4: So look, I thin it's gonna be speech tomorrow that's
- 6:00Speaker 4: going to outline his agenda, particularly on the border, inflation,
- 6:04Speaker 4: the economy, a lot of the foreign policy aspects we're
- 6:07Speaker 4: facing both as a nation as the world. And then
- 6:09Speaker 4: from there it's not just talk as in the action.
- 6:11Speaker 4: You know. It supposedly has about one hundred executive orders
- 6:14Speaker 4: lined up that I don't think he's gonna wait to
- 6:17Speaker 4: get to the White House to sign. I think you're
- 6:18Speaker 4: gonna likely to see him tomorrow immediately after his speech,
- 6:21Speaker 4: go right there in the Capitol and start signing the
- 6:23Speaker 4: executive executive orders, particularly relates to border security, immigration, among
- 6:28Speaker 4: other key policies as well.
- 6:29Speaker 2: Yeah, what are some of those significant moves that he
- 6:32Speaker 2: might make on day one. The Americans keeping an eye on.
- 6:37Speaker 4: Well, particularly on border security. I think you're going to
- 6:39Speaker 4: see him take action on that on day one, namely
- 6:41Speaker 4: relates just starting with the deportation of people have been
- 6:47Speaker 4: here in the country illegally, but namely starting with people
- 6:50Speaker 4: who've been in the country illegally who've committed violent crimes.
- 6:52Speaker 4: I think you're going to see him start there, and
- 6:55Speaker 4: then beyond that many other domestic priorities as well, for example,
- 6:59Speaker 4: on energy and drilling, I think you're going to see
- 7:01Speaker 4: him take immediate action on that. So a lot of
- 7:03Speaker 4: these these things are going to see on day one
- 7:05Speaker 4: through executive orders, but some of his againa certainly needs
- 7:07Speaker 4: a wait to have, you know, action taken. On Capitol Hill,
- 7:12Speaker 4: there's legislation. I think we're gonna see there is one
- 7:15Speaker 4: big bill that he's to be working on with Congress.
- 7:17Speaker 4: As include a lot of the key domestic policies, particulars
- 7:20Speaker 4: of the release of tax relief and of the key
- 7:22Speaker 4: policies he campaigned on. And honestly, these other things are
- 7:25Speaker 4: gonna be taking shape here as well. In the foreign
- 7:26Speaker 4: policy stage, particularly at lays to Ukraine Russia. Obviously we've
- 7:29Speaker 4: seen him already play a major role defining role on
- 7:33Speaker 4: the initial phase one here ceasefire and the hostage dynamics
- 7:38Speaker 4: that have taken place between Israel and Amas. So look,
- 7:41Speaker 4: these are all things that are in motion here. I
- 7:43Speaker 4: think a lot of it doesn't take place tomorrow, with
- 7:45Speaker 4: a lot of the executive orders and of course working
- 7:47Speaker 4: with Congress on a lot of key legislative activities as well, because.
- 7:50Speaker 2: He has promised a lot, Matt, But do you get
- 7:51Speaker 2: the feeling that they are prepared and ready to go?
- 7:55Speaker 4: Absolutely. Look, this is a far smoother transition than what
- 7:59Speaker 4: you say, all with his first transition when he was
- 8:02Speaker 4: first elected president in his first term. And look, you
- 8:05Speaker 4: keep people like Susie Wilds and others have been really
- 8:07Speaker 4: driving this transition team. You know, I think it was smart,
- 8:10Speaker 4: frankly for him to announce his team, particularly nominees for
- 8:15Speaker 4: his candidate positions early on. He did that weeks ago.
- 8:18Speaker 4: In many cases, I think there was a smart move. Clearly,
- 8:21Speaker 4: they are ready to go. They are prepared for this.
- 8:23Speaker 4: You know, he has been working through and through I
- 8:25Speaker 4: believe on this transition. They are ready to go. Starting
- 8:28Speaker 4: tomorrow day one with these executive orders, There's no question
- 8:31Speaker 4: about that. But these are relates to things that he
- 8:33Speaker 4: campaign down and you're right, Look, he needs to now deliver,
- 8:37Speaker 4: and he really the first one hundred days of his
- 8:38Speaker 4: administration are you know, every day matters in his administration,
- 8:41Speaker 4: but the first one hundred days are really a unique
- 8:43Speaker 4: window to deliver for the American people a lot. You know, well,
- 8:47Speaker 4: of our seventy million Americans that have voted for him,
- 8:49Speaker 4: they voted for because they want to change on the economy,
- 8:52Speaker 4: change on the inflation, border security, among other big parties
- 8:56Speaker 4: that they had in mind when they voted for him.
- 8:57Speaker 4: Now he needs to deliver.
- 8:58Speaker 2: Matt Maco Rubia his being picked as Trumps Secretary of State,
- 9:01Speaker 2: what are you expecting from him in that role?
- 9:05Speaker 4: Well, look, first of all, I think it's a great choice.
- 9:07Speaker 4: I don't think there's anyone who's been more prepared to
- 9:10Speaker 4: be the center of faith than Marco Rubio. This is
- 9:12Speaker 4: someone who served on the Senate Form Relations Committee, sent
- 9:14Speaker 4: an Intel Committee. He has spent a great deal of
- 9:17Speaker 4: time building relationships with leaders on the foreign policy stage,
- 9:21Speaker 4: and he knows these issues that the United States and
- 9:24Speaker 4: world are facing right now. Is relates to China policy.
- 9:27Speaker 4: You know, he knows issues and priorities have released to Ukraine, Russia,
- 9:30Speaker 4: another key foreign policy dynamics taking place here. So look,
- 9:33Speaker 4: this is a very different world that President elect Trump
- 9:36Speaker 4: is entering with respect to his term here in comparison
- 9:39Speaker 4: to the world that he entered during his first term.
- 9:42Speaker 4: And particular it relates to a lot of the new
- 9:44Speaker 4: policies and initiatives taking shape here and dynamic taking place
- 9:48Speaker 4: in the foreign policy stage. But it's also picking up
- 9:50Speaker 4: I think where President Trump left off in his first term.
- 9:52Speaker 4: I think to see him do that with Abraham Accords.
- 9:55Speaker 4: I think going to see him go back to maximum
- 9:57Speaker 4: pressure with Iran. So I think we can see some
- 9:59Speaker 4: new policies rolled out with his foreign policy team, and
- 10:02Speaker 4: I certainly sort of Rubio playing an instrumental role in
- 10:04Speaker 4: that as the next Secretary of State. But again, I
- 10:07Speaker 4: think a lot of this be picking up war proisdent
- 10:08Speaker 4: Trump left off in his first term as well on
- 10:10Speaker 4: the foreign policy stage.
- 10:11Speaker 2: Matt, thank you so much for your time today. That
- 10:13Speaker 2: was Matt Terrell, the managing director at Firehouse Strategies and
- 10:17Speaker 2: Marco Ruby, Rubio's a former chief of staff. Next up,
- 10:21Speaker 2: we have the sports wrap up. It is eighteen past five.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Setting the news agenda on early editions with one roof
- 10:29Speaker 1: make your property search simple, News.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Talk dB is time for our weekend sport wrap up
- 10:35Speaker 2: and Elliott Smith's sports reporter on the Voice of Rugby
- 10:37Speaker 2: Here at newstalksb joins me. Good morning, Good morning. Saldip
- 10:41Speaker 2: thought Auckland looked fantastic.
- 10:43Speaker 1: It did.
- 10:43Speaker 5: It looked out standing. Everyone got him behind it mean,
- 10:46Speaker 5: this is the city of Sales. The grand stand was
- 10:48Speaker 5: packed out. The racing this saying wasn't too bad, I
- 10:52Speaker 5: think was pretty good as well. I mean it's so quick,
- 10:54Speaker 5: isn't it? Nine ten minute races. I mean that's shorter
- 10:57Speaker 5: than you know, seven's game. You think about those old
- 10:59Speaker 5: America's Cup races where they lasted for three four hours,
- 11:02Speaker 5: and now we're down to ten minutes, sort of mini
- 11:04Speaker 5: races on the water. It's a quick concept. You're in
- 11:07Speaker 5: and out.
- 11:07Speaker 4: Look.
- 11:07Speaker 5: I thought it was. It looked spectacular on the Aukland
- 11:10Speaker 5: waterfront and you know, bring it on more of the same.
- 11:13Speaker 5: It sounds like they're negotiations to lock it away for
- 11:15Speaker 5: a few more years too.
- 11:16Speaker 2: What was fun about it? Was you had kind of
- 11:18Speaker 2: a different winner each race.
- 11:19Speaker 5: Yeah, it wasn't.
- 11:19Speaker 2: It wasn't kind of set in stone how it was
- 11:22Speaker 2: all going to turn.
- 11:23Speaker 5: Out, that's right. And some races I think you had
- 11:25Speaker 5: on the first day. Germany didn't shot up for one
- 11:28Speaker 5: of them because they had to sort something out. And
- 11:30Speaker 5: when you've got four races a ninety minute window, you know,
- 11:32Speaker 5: you don't have time to a pair of things. Canada
- 11:34Speaker 5: went in there for a bit yesterday. So in Australia,
- 11:37Speaker 5: you know, it kind of went to the best overall
- 11:40Speaker 5: team over you know, the seven or so races we
- 11:43Speaker 5: had over the course of the weekend, so there was
- 11:45Speaker 5: some consistency there. But I mean it's just quick fight.
- 11:48Speaker 5: But if you don't get the start right in those races,
- 11:49Speaker 5: you're pretty much done for, right. Yeah, nine minutes isn't
- 11:52Speaker 5: a long a lot of time to crawl back a
- 11:54Speaker 5: dodgy start.
- 11:54Speaker 2: So the New Zealand team managed to crawl back quite
- 11:57Speaker 2: a few places, just not quite enough at times. Absolutely,
- 12:00Speaker 2: Hey was the Open of Courses in full swing.
- 12:02Speaker 5: It is Djokovic, but a controversy last night didn't do
- 12:05Speaker 5: that traditional on court interview at the Aussie Open. They
- 12:08Speaker 5: do when Jimmy Currey comes and interviewed the players, and
- 12:11Speaker 5: basically this all seems out to Friday night when one
- 12:12Speaker 5: of the Aussie broadcaster is basically had a crack at
- 12:14Speaker 5: the Serbian fans on here. They were chanting at him
- 12:17Speaker 5: and he decided to give it back to them in
- 12:18Speaker 5: spades and told Jokovic, you know, he's not welcome in Australia.
- 12:22Speaker 5: Blah blah blah. Now Djokovic somewhey got back to us, say,
- 12:24Speaker 5: somehow got back to him. It's all over social media,
- 12:27Speaker 5: so he's refused to do the on court interviews. But
- 12:29Speaker 5: he was very, very good last night. This is a
- 12:31Speaker 5: big match tomorrow night. I suspect it will be Tuesday
- 12:34Speaker 5: night quarter final him versus Carlos Alcarez. Think of that.
- 12:37Speaker 5: In a quarter final, that's where the Under Grand Slam
- 12:38Speaker 5: Fungland itself. So that's a huge match. But Djokovic and
- 12:42Speaker 5: Alcarez both winning through last night with a tinger controversy
- 12:45Speaker 5: as well, and down one feast playing tonight the ASP Classic,
- 12:48Speaker 5: and how good's he been being in number four yesterday?
- 12:51Speaker 2: And how delightful was he when he won?
- 12:53Speaker 5: Just gorgeous, outstanding, and you know he can barely. He
- 12:56Speaker 5: just shuffles along the court. He can barely move, but
- 12:59Speaker 5: here he is.
- 13:02Speaker 2: I think you might move better than you and I.
- 13:03Speaker 5: Had as a professional tenness player.
- 13:06Speaker 2: And really quickly. Good to see Auckland f C back
- 13:08Speaker 2: and forth.
- 13:08Speaker 5: Yes, I've been a bit wobbly, haven't they, but managed
- 13:10Speaker 5: to get that when I'm a previous leaders in Melbourne City.
- 13:13Speaker 5: You know, three goals in the space about sixteen minutes
- 13:16Speaker 5: in the first spell. Big crowd again me Saturday, I
- 13:18Speaker 5: was huge in an Auckland sal GP on one side
- 13:20Speaker 5: of the city. Auckland f C getting a decent old
- 13:23Speaker 5: crowd there and they've got a big, big wig as
- 13:25Speaker 5: well MIDWEK game against Adelaide as well Wednesday night.
- 13:27Speaker 2: So thank you so much, Elliott, appreciate that key to
- 13:30Speaker 2: hear you what you thought about the sale GP. You're
- 13:33Speaker 2: most welcome to text me on ninety two ninety two.
- 13:35Speaker 2: A few people text me yesterday on the Sunday session
- 13:37Speaker 2: to say that actually they found the graphics and things
- 13:39Speaker 2: on the television coverage quite hard to follow. That it
- 13:42Speaker 2: all just you know, it all happened in such a
- 13:44Speaker 2: small space and it was it was all just a
- 13:47Speaker 2: bit clustered and they weren't sure what was going on.
- 13:50Speaker 2: How did you find it? I haven't watched a lot
- 13:52Speaker 2: of sale GP. This was the opportunity for them to
- 13:55Speaker 2: grab me and get me to come back and watch more.
- 13:57Speaker 2: And I think I will. Ninety two is our text number.
- 14:01Speaker 2: It's twenty four past.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Five the early edition full show podcast on iHeartRadio powered
- 14:07Speaker 1: by Newstalks at Me.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Like many of us over the summer, Prime Minister Christopher
- 14:11Speaker 2: Luxon used his downtime to reflect on the year that
- 14:14Speaker 2: had been, and, like many of us, put together his
- 14:18Speaker 2: in and outlist for twenty twenty five. This is the
- 14:20Speaker 2: way the young people do New Year's resolutions these days? Well,
- 14:24Speaker 2: what's in and out to corner new rather crude spin.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Yesterday afternoon, when he announced a reshuffle of ministerial roles
- 14:31Speaker 2: for national MPs, Melissaly lost all her portfolios. Matt Doucy
- 14:35Speaker 2: is handing over acc Tourism and Hospitality and Youth to
- 14:39Speaker 2: various other MPs to focus on his mental health and
- 14:42Speaker 2: Associate health roles, and doctor Shane Retti passes on the
- 14:45Speaker 2: health portfolio to Simeon Brown instead picking up a new
- 14:49Speaker 2: university's role. Plus science innovation and technology. The emphasis on
- 14:53Speaker 2: health and economic growth is not a surprise, and while
- 14:56Speaker 2: the Prime Minister continues to express confidence in Retty spoke
- 15:00Speaker 2: of his achievements last year, it's clear he's decided his
- 15:03Speaker 2: ministerial skills are better used elsewhere. However, the health goals remain.
- 15:08Speaker 2: What the government wants to see is faster cancer treatment,
- 15:11Speaker 2: shorter stays in eds, shorter wait times to see a GP,
- 15:14Speaker 2: get specialist appointments or get an elective treatment. But health
- 15:18Speaker 2: is a beast of a portfolio and obviously it became
- 15:21Speaker 2: clear to the Prime Minister that the New Zealand public
- 15:24Speaker 2: is not impressed with the speed of progress towards these targets.
- 15:27Speaker 2: I appreciate Luckson's loyalty. Others questioned Retty's performance last year,
- 15:33Speaker 2: but loyalty doesn't get the job done, and Luckson needs
- 15:36Speaker 2: a political operator who can, in his words, deliver and execute.
- 15:41Speaker 2: Step on up then the delivery man, Simeon Brown. Prime
- 15:44Speaker 2: Minister Luxon described Doc Dirretty as a top quality human
- 15:48Speaker 2: being in a team player when asked how we took
- 15:50Speaker 2: the news and look, I couldn't agree more. He's a
- 15:52Speaker 2: good guy. I've always found him to be thoughtful, dignified,
- 15:55Speaker 2: his intentions, genuine and knowledgeable on the health system, but
- 15:59Speaker 2: he was quite as good at communicating how things were
- 16:02Speaker 2: moving forward and simple, decisive, reassuring sound bites. Yes there
- 16:08Speaker 2: were wins, such as the announcement of cancer drugs, another
- 16:11Speaker 2: seventeen billion been thrown in health over three years, and
- 16:14Speaker 2: suggestion of change in culture and health New Zealand, but
- 16:17Speaker 2: they can't compete with headline grabbing issues. The system is
- 16:20Speaker 2: facing things like staff shortages, government issues, funding deficits in
- 16:25Speaker 2: the proposed scale back to Dunedin's hospital rebuild. On top
- 16:29Speaker 2: of that, too many frontline and senior clinicians said Doctorrretti
- 16:33Speaker 2: was out of his depth. I wonder if doctor Etti
- 16:37Speaker 2: is quietly signed with relief at being moved on from
- 16:40Speaker 2: a portfolio often seen as a poison chalice, as Claire
- 16:44Speaker 2: Trevet calls it. He might not have had the mongrel
- 16:47Speaker 2: to get health under control quickly enough for the national leader,
- 16:51Speaker 2: but that's not to say he won't be effective in
- 16:53Speaker 2: his new roles. Well, the Prime Minister has previously said
- 16:57Speaker 2: he sees no need for a reshuffle. This actually is
- 16:59Speaker 2: a positive start to twenty twenty five for luxin sure,
- 17:04Speaker 2: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. But if you
- 17:06Speaker 2: think you can do better, then hell yeah, let's go.
- 17:09Speaker 2: Hopefully we will get a more efficient health system out
- 17:12Speaker 2: of it.
- 17:14Speaker 1: News Talks EDB.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Can you hear your thoughts? Do you think it's a
- 17:17Speaker 2: good start to the year for Prime Minister Luxin? I
- 17:20Speaker 2: think he's made a good move here. Has he gone
- 17:23Speaker 2: far enough? Though? Would you like to have seen more
- 17:26Speaker 2: changes or are you comfortable with the changes that he
- 17:29Speaker 2: has made at this stage? You can text on ninety
- 17:32Speaker 2: two ninety two You're the newstalksby.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Stay ahead of the curve earlier this year with one Room,
- 17:47Speaker 1: make your property search simple. News Talks EDB. Where with.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Good Morning his early edition on Newstalks. I'm Francesca Vudkins
- 18:10Speaker 2: filling in for Ryan. He's going to be with you
- 18:12Speaker 2: at six am this morning. Thanks for being with us.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Just a very quick update. The New York Times has
- 18:18Speaker 2: released and breaking news that President elect Trump has said
- 18:23Speaker 2: that he will issue an executive order on Monday to
- 18:27Speaker 2: extend the period of time for TikTok before the laws
- 18:30Speaker 2: prohibitions take effects, that they can make a deal to
- 18:33Speaker 2: protect our national security. So it looks like TikTok will
- 18:36Speaker 2: get a ninety day reprieve in order to try and
- 18:39Speaker 2: sell the company. It is unclear though, whether Trump's effort
- 18:43Speaker 2: will be If it's will be successful, his executive order
- 18:46Speaker 2: could face a legal challenge and companies subject to the
- 18:49Speaker 2: law may determine that it doesn't provide enough assurance for
- 18:51Speaker 2: them to put TikTok back on their platform. So we
- 18:54Speaker 2: will keep an eye on that story for you. In
- 18:57Speaker 2: the next half hour, we head around the regions and
- 18:59Speaker 2: to the UK, where a British Israeli hostage is expected
- 19:02Speaker 2: to be released today following this cease thy ideal between
- 19:05Speaker 2: Israel and Hamas and yesterday afternoon, the Prime Minister kicked
- 19:09Speaker 2: off the year with his first reshuffle of national ministers
- 19:11Speaker 2: since coming to power, with the priorities being the health
- 19:14Speaker 2: system and economic growth. Finance Minister Nikola Willis has been
- 19:18Speaker 2: given more wide ranging powers over the economy. She is
- 19:21Speaker 2: with us before the end of the hour to talk
- 19:23Speaker 2: about what she hopes this will achieve. Thank you very
- 19:26Speaker 2: much for your texts on the reshuffle. Good to see
- 19:29Speaker 2: luxon making decisive moves regarding health outcomes and other policies.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Strong leadership is apparent and needed a positive move. Indeed,
- 19:38Speaker 2: regarding the salgp ifew of you have textas say oh look,
- 19:41Speaker 2: I found it confusing. I found it blooming confusing, one says,
- 19:44Speaker 2: switched over to the chase.
- 19:46Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 19:46Speaker 2: I kind of it took me a while to get
- 19:48Speaker 2: used to. But once I kind of got used to it,
- 19:51Speaker 2: I got on. I was there, I was into it.
- 19:53Speaker 2: I love the fact that these are short, sharp races.
- 19:55Speaker 2: It's exciting, it's quite unpredictable. Yeah, I think to know
- 19:59Speaker 2: a little bit more excitingly in the America's cup. Maybe. Anyway,
- 20:02Speaker 2: keep the feedback coming. You can text on ninety two
- 20:05Speaker 2: ninety two news talk zbe right, let's head around the country.
- 20:10Speaker 2: Joining us now from Dunedin as Callum Proctor, Good morning,
- 20:13Speaker 2: Callum morning. Francisco Attaga University researchers have discovered more about
- 20:20Speaker 2: the nesting behaviors of native solitary bees yea.
- 20:25Speaker 7: The study out of Dnedans looked into three species of
- 20:28Speaker 7: bees here, not the common honey bees that we're familiar with,
- 20:31Speaker 7: but those that tend to nest alone in underground burrows.
- 20:34Speaker 7: These bees forage, they build nests independently, and the study
- 20:37Speaker 7: has used cameras to monitor mostly females bees habits, and
- 20:42Speaker 7: it's found that they were most active when temperatures were
- 20:44Speaker 7: between twenty and twenty five degrees, less active when it
- 20:46Speaker 7: was colder. The researchers say that these findings are important
- 20:50Speaker 7: for many reasons, including us for conservation efforts, but more
- 20:53Speaker 7: research is needed.
- 20:54Speaker 2: Fascinating. What's the weather like today in Dunedin? Callum, good
- 20:58Speaker 2: day to be a bee?
- 20:59Speaker 7: Find today Southerly's developing a a high of nineteen Thank you.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Claire Sherbert is with us now in christ Church. What's
- 21:06Speaker 2: the reaction for the first ever Minister for the South
- 21:09Speaker 2: Island Claire.
- 21:10Speaker 8: Yes, Francesca Well, it's shocked from the vung Tata MP
- 21:13Speaker 8: James Meager. After this appointment, he's been tasked with the
- 21:16Speaker 8: new South Island portfolio. He takes that as well as
- 21:19Speaker 8: Hunting and Fishing, Youth and Associate for Transport. He will
- 21:23Speaker 8: stay on as the Select Committee chair for the time
- 21:26Speaker 8: being as well. He was actually at Saturday's Blackclash cricket
- 21:30Speaker 8: match at Hagley Oval when Chris Luxon called him about this.
- 21:34Speaker 8: He told our newsroom he was gobsmacked. He had to
- 21:37Speaker 8: find a corner in order to process what the PM
- 21:39Speaker 8: had said to him. Meagher said the Prime Minister and
- 21:42Speaker 8: him will meet in the coming days in order to
- 21:44Speaker 8: flesh out this role a little bit more. Meanwhile, Matt Doocey,
- 21:48Speaker 8: who was previously the only South Island based MP, has
- 21:51Speaker 8: lost acc Tourism and Hospitality as well as his youth portfolios.
- 21:55Speaker 8: He will though keep Mental Health and Associate Minister of Health.
- 22:00Speaker 9: Lot on the go.
- 22:00Speaker 2: The weather today, Claire, not.
- 22:02Speaker 8: So good here in christ Church, cloudy to start, It
- 22:05Speaker 8: will clear to fine, easterly is developing and high of
- 22:07Speaker 8: twenty one.
- 22:09Speaker 2: Thank you so much, Claire. Michael sergele As in Wellington,
- 22:12Speaker 2: good morning, Good morning. Tori Faro could be facing a
- 22:15Speaker 2: lot of competition if she decides to run for Mary
- 22:17Speaker 2: again this year.
- 22:18Speaker 9: Yes, another election year is officially underway in the Capitol.
- 22:21Speaker 9: Faro's told News Talks he'd be she'd be talking to
- 22:23Speaker 9: family and friends about whether or not she runs again.
- 22:26Speaker 9: A councilor, Ray Chung's told us he's definitely thinking of standing.
- 22:30Speaker 9: John Panowitch says he's more than likely to stand, also
- 22:33Speaker 9: considering a run. Ice cream shop owner Carl Typhon Baker
- 22:37Speaker 9: and entrepreneur Luke Pearson. Farno has faced setback certainly the
- 22:41Speaker 9: government appointing a Crown Observer before Christmas after Councilor's backtracked
- 22:44Speaker 9: on that airport Sheer sale decision, but she's also had
- 22:48Speaker 9: a win in recent days with Reading Cinemas confirming it
- 22:51Speaker 9: will reopen under a redevelopment revealed by News Talk seb
- 22:54Speaker 9: earlier this month. And I'm sure everyone that's been to
- 22:56Speaker 9: Reading will be very excited and it's to hear that
- 22:58Speaker 9: it's coming back.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Good news and Wellington's weather today, Michael.
- 23:01Speaker 9: Find apart from some areas more and cloud the high
- 23:04Speaker 9: nineteen degrees.
- 23:04Speaker 2: Thank you so much and welcome back to neither Britty
- 23:07Speaker 2: Mano in the Auckland studio. Good to have you with me.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Thank you for returning from holiday. Well can you get
- 23:13Speaker 2: your check?
- 23:16Speaker 1: Get out?
- 23:17Speaker 10: That's my tune feed away for five weeks.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Flip.
- 23:21Speaker 2: I was a rude awakening this morning.
- 23:22Speaker 10: Within alarm went off. I was crying on the inside
- 23:25Speaker 10: and the out.
- 23:26Speaker 2: It's a little bizarre and unfamiliar, but that's not a
- 23:28Speaker 2: bad thing. That a bad thing. Correct? Could you get
- 23:31Speaker 2: on with you? Could you get on with your news?
- 23:33Speaker 5: My job my job.
- 23:34Speaker 10: Well, Okay, so I was trying to choose an awkward
- 23:36Speaker 10: story and I have found one that you haven't actually
- 23:38Speaker 10: mentioned so far because everyone's talking about oh the sale
- 23:41Speaker 10: GP Luke Combs, blah blah. We're not going to talk
- 23:43Speaker 10: about that today. So the first of two inquiries this
- 23:46Speaker 10: is relating you remember that franchise scat. Yes, the allegations
- 23:49Speaker 10: are misusing census information. Well, the first of the inquiries
- 23:52Speaker 10: come out has found no evidence of data breaches. So
- 23:56Speaker 10: in June last year, this is when the allegations arose
- 23:59Speaker 10: of mandldere wore my I misusing the twenty twenty three
- 24:02Speaker 10: census data. This was to help to party Mardi's election campaign.
- 24:06Speaker 10: So the sixty seven page report, I haven't read it,
- 24:10Speaker 10: but it finds the approach by far no order to
- 24:12Speaker 10: lift Mardi participation for the census whent above and beyond obligations. So,
- 24:17Speaker 10: I mean, I know you're thinking, what's that all so mean?
- 24:19Speaker 10: But you know they did say that this independent investigation,
- 24:23Speaker 10: it gives nine recommendations for improving stat zemz's procedures. Okay,
- 24:27Speaker 10: weather today in Auklumb partly cloudy, isolated showers mainly this
- 24:30Speaker 10: morning north of the harbor Bridge twenty five is the
- 24:32Speaker 10: high you're wanting to get me out?
- 24:33Speaker 2: Are you look? Best of luck with the rest of
- 24:35Speaker 2: the morning, Neva, I hope, I hope for gooes.
- 24:38Speaker 10: Well, I'm sorry for the staff having to put up
- 24:40Speaker 10: with me.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Next off, we're up, We're off to the UK. Gale
- 24:43Speaker 2: Downey is with us after the.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Break International correspondence with ends and eye Insurance. Peace of
- 24:50Speaker 1: mind for New Zealand business.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has started the new year with
- 24:58Speaker 2: multiple changes to cabinet. Doctor Shane Letti has lost the
- 25:02Speaker 2: Health portfolio. Samion Brown becomes a new Minister for Health
- 25:05Speaker 2: while handing over his Transport portfolio to Chris Bishop. Melissaly
- 25:08Speaker 2: is gone, losing the Economic Development portfolio, which is to
- 25:11Speaker 2: be renamed Economic Growth and handed to Finance Minister Nikola Willis.
- 25:15Speaker 2: Finance Minister and Minister of Economic Growth. Nikola Willis joins me. Now,
- 25:19Speaker 2: good morning, Nikola, thank you for your time.
- 25:22Speaker 11: Good Marde. Great to be on the show.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Is this a new portfolio or just a new name?
- 25:27Speaker 11: Well, it is a new portfolio because the Pen's given
- 25:30Speaker 11: me the mandate to make sure that across all of
- 25:34Speaker 11: the portfolios that make a difference to our businesses, exports,
- 25:38Speaker 11: our industries, our innovators, that we are doing all that
- 25:41Speaker 11: we can so that they can grow, so that they
- 25:44Speaker 11: can be smare harm more people, add more value to
- 25:47Speaker 11: what they're doing. And so that means pulling that together
- 25:50Speaker 11: across government, working of course through the Economic Development Agency
- 25:55Speaker 11: and doing the work that has been done there in
- 25:57Speaker 11: the past, but building on that to really drive our
- 26:00Speaker 11: growth ad you forward.
- 26:02Speaker 2: So how are you going to do that? What are
- 26:03Speaker 2: your plans for your extended role.
- 26:06Speaker 11: Well, my plans are to get alongside New Zealand small businesses,
- 26:11Speaker 11: our industry leaders, some of those entrepreneurs in our community,
- 26:16Speaker 11: and to work with them to say, okay, what are
- 26:18Speaker 11: the things getting in your way that are making it
- 26:21Speaker 11: hard to do business in New Zealand. Because the truth
- 26:24Speaker 11: is when businesses are doing well, when they're investing, when
- 26:27Speaker 11: they're spending, when they're hiring people, that's when all New
- 26:30Speaker 11: Zealanders do well. And that's what we want to see.
- 26:33Speaker 11: And we know whether it's regulation, whether it's the way
- 26:36Speaker 11: the science system's working, whether it's the education system, infrastructure,
- 26:40Speaker 11: our investment rules, those things can really get in the way.
- 26:43Speaker 11: So we've been a government that's been making reforms across
- 26:46Speaker 11: all of those areas, but we want.
- 26:48Speaker 4: To keep going.
- 26:48Speaker 11: We want to go harder. We want to make this
- 26:51Speaker 11: one of the best places in the world to do
- 26:53Speaker 11: business because that will benefit everyday New Zealander.
- 26:56Speaker 2: So can you give me an example of how you
- 26:57Speaker 2: might work with another portfolio and another department.
- 27:01Speaker 4: Yeah, well, a.
- 27:01Speaker 11: Good example is the science and Innovation space. Doctor Shane Reshi,
- 27:06Speaker 11: as a Minister for Science, Innovation and Technology, will take
- 27:09Speaker 11: responsibility for delivering changes in that area. My role will
- 27:14Speaker 11: be to work with some of our businesses and industries
- 27:17Speaker 11: and to say what do you want to see happening there,
- 27:20Speaker 11: and then to make sure that we're prioritizing that work effectively,
- 27:24Speaker 11: that it's being delivered in a timely fashion, and also
- 27:28Speaker 11: to make sure it really connects with that economic growth goal.
- 27:31Speaker 11: Are we doing the things in our science and innovation
- 27:33Speaker 11: system that will make New Zealand a wealthier place where
- 27:36Speaker 11: people have better choices and better jobs, and across all
- 27:40Speaker 11: of the portfolios, whether it's the commerce portfolio where we
- 27:43Speaker 11: want to see greater competition in many of our sectors,
- 27:46Speaker 11: whether it's the infrastructure portfolio where we want to see
- 27:49Speaker 11: infrastructure delivered better. It's about continuously working with ministers to say, okay,
- 27:54Speaker 11: are we doing in a way that will make the
- 27:56Speaker 11: ship go faster, that will make New Zealand grow faster.
- 28:00Speaker 11: So I'm looking forward to it.
- 28:01Speaker 2: Minister, you said yesterday that you want to make New
- 28:03Speaker 2: Zealand a great place for the next generation. You spoke
- 28:06Speaker 2: about our children wanting to live here in New Zealand,
- 28:09Speaker 2: But what about now, what about the young people coming
- 28:12Speaker 2: out of university, what about people thinking of having a
- 28:14Speaker 2: family here in New Zealand. I mean, we all want
- 28:17Speaker 2: you know, we don't really want to wait and need
- 28:18Speaker 2: another generation for New Zealand to be a great place
- 28:20Speaker 2: to be.
- 28:21Speaker 11: Well, I know that that's exactly what I have in mind, Franciscan.
- 28:24Speaker 11: My point is for them to want to stay here.
- 28:27Speaker 11: Those are exactly the young people I have in mind.
- 28:29Speaker 11: They need to see not just about what New Zealand's
- 28:32Speaker 11: doing now. They're thinking about what will my life be
- 28:35Speaker 11: like in New Zealand when I'm raising a family of
- 28:38Speaker 11: my own, when I'm here in my thirties, And I
- 28:40Speaker 11: want them to look at New Zealand and see, actually,
- 28:42Speaker 11: this is a country that's going to get beiser and better.
- 28:46Speaker 11: We've got enormous prospects and a world where there is
- 28:48Speaker 11: huge amounts of instability. Here we are huge natural resources,
- 28:52Speaker 11: incredible sectors across our economy and a government is going
- 28:56Speaker 11: to back them to grow so that this place will
- 28:58Speaker 11: be a place of great jobs unity. That's what I
- 29:00Speaker 11: want our young people to see. That's exactly the AJDA
- 29:04Speaker 11: that I want to try a forward.
- 29:05Speaker 2: Nichola, thank you so much for your time this morning.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Appreciate it.
- 29:09Speaker 11: Thank you.
- 29:10Speaker 2: That was the new Minister of Economic Growth there, Nikola Willis.
- 29:14Speaker 2: It is ten to sixty with news talks.
- 29:16Speaker 1: They'd be news talks ITIBB.
- 29:21Speaker 2: And time now for our foreign correspondent. We have UK
- 29:24Speaker 2: and Europe correspondent Gail Downey with us now.
- 29:27Speaker 6: Good morning Gail, Morning Francesca.
- 29:30Speaker 2: Tell me the British Israeli hostage is expected to be
- 29:35Speaker 2: among the first hostages free today.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Where is this it.
- 29:40Speaker 6: Okay? So we have an update on that. She has
- 29:43Speaker 6: actually now been released, along with two other young women,
- 29:47Speaker 6: doren Steinbecker, who was also snatched from the kibbutz where
- 29:51Speaker 6: Emily was working, and the other hostage and again another
- 29:54Speaker 6: young woman called romy Gonne she was ambushed when she
- 29:58Speaker 6: tried to escape the super Nova festival along with hundreds
- 30:01Speaker 6: of others. When Hamas attacked, the three young women were
- 30:04Speaker 6: handed over to the Red Cross. They're now currently at
- 30:09Speaker 6: an Israeli military base. The Israeli military took them from
- 30:13Speaker 6: the Red Cross to escort them back to Israel, which
- 30:15Speaker 6: is where they now are, and I can tell you
- 30:19Speaker 6: that the mothers are due to meet them shortly.
- 30:23Speaker 2: Oh, wonderful news. Is the concerned in the UK about
- 30:25Speaker 2: the stability of the ceasefire?
- 30:28Speaker 6: Well, I think there's concern everywhere about the stability of
- 30:31Speaker 6: the sea spire because of course the second stages is
- 30:35Speaker 6: the rebuild, you know, the infrastructure. If you see the
- 30:38Speaker 6: images in Gaza and other cities, who is now going
- 30:42Speaker 6: to be in charge of that, who is going to
- 30:45Speaker 6: pay for it, and who ultimately is going to run
- 30:49Speaker 6: the strip because of course there are fears about Israel's
- 30:53Speaker 6: intent just as much as our fears about the intent
- 30:57Speaker 6: of Hannas and also rival group within the region.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Oh look, it's going to be a really special reunion,
- 31:04Speaker 2: isn't it. Incredible realities? Yes, yeah, Oh, Gail, thank you
- 31:08Speaker 2: very much for the update. Appreciate that you are with
- 31:12Speaker 2: News Talks. It is seven to six shortly.
- 31:17Speaker 1: All of the analysis, none of the nonsense. It's early

- 31:36Speaker 2: Where are your snacks?
- 31:37Speaker 4: Should?
- 31:38Speaker 12: I'm not something I want to show you at this hour?
- 31:41Speaker 2: This is what normally happens. He lines up his little
- 31:44Speaker 2: tupple wears with his nuts and all his snacks for them. Oh,
- 31:47Speaker 2: I see what your changes the temperature?
- 31:49Speaker 9: No, I usually keep mind.
- 31:51Speaker 2: Have you got well, have you got some substance to
- 31:53Speaker 2: get you through, because you've got to do three hours
- 31:55Speaker 2: not one man?
- 31:56Speaker 9: No, you're quite right.
- 31:56Speaker 12: No, I've actually just been having a little bit of
- 31:58Speaker 12: musely out in the office with some strawberries and some bananas.
- 32:03Speaker 12: If you're no nuts, well thank you. And can I
- 32:07Speaker 12: just say how great it is to have you doing
- 32:09Speaker 12: early Edition.
- 32:10Speaker 9: What a great show it is?
- 32:11Speaker 2: I love it.
- 32:12Speaker 12: Isn't it cool?
- 32:13Speaker 2: But a bom It's just like you just it's fantastic.
- 32:15Speaker 9: You're in and you're out.
- 32:17Speaker 12: It's got everything you got, all the updates from overnight
- 32:20Speaker 12: from around the world, all that kind of stuff.
- 32:22Speaker 9: I love it. It's a great show.
- 32:23Speaker 2: It'll still be here in a couple of weeks when
- 32:25Speaker 2: you come back, don't you worry?
- 32:26Speaker 12: Well, no, I'm going to drive after this.
- 32:29Speaker 2: I'm so all over the musical chairs. I do walk
- 32:33Speaker 2: in and go what day is it? What show is it? Okay?
- 32:35Speaker 2: Here we go, hey, but it is great to have
- 32:37Speaker 2: you back. What have you got coming up on the show?
- 32:38Speaker 9: Obviously big news day today.
- 32:40Speaker 12: We've got a cabinet reshuffle from the Prime Minister announced yesterday,
- 32:44Speaker 12: So we're going to talk to Simey and Brown who
- 32:46Speaker 12: is going to be the new Health Minister and what
- 32:49Speaker 12: a job he's got ahead of him because it's a
- 32:51Speaker 12: really it's a behemoth the Health Ministry. Eighty thousand staff
- 32:57Speaker 12: work for to Futter Audit, which is about five times
- 33:00Speaker 12: bigger than any other organization in New Zealand. Heavily unionized.
- 33:04Speaker 12: You'll come up against that. Also, you've got management issues,
- 33:08Speaker 12: you've got debts, You've got a whole bunch of issues
- 33:11Speaker 12: that he's going to have to contend with.
- 33:12Speaker 9: So is he up to the job.
- 33:13Speaker 12: Luxon says so but what does he think and what
- 33:16Speaker 12: does he think he can actually do with it.
- 33:18Speaker 9: We'll talk to him after seven this morning.
- 33:20Speaker 12: Plus we're also going to be in Tel Aviv obviously
- 33:21Speaker 12: talking about the ceasefire, so much to talk about. We've
- 33:25Speaker 12: got the commentary box coming up after eight as well,
- 33:27Speaker 12: lots of sport over the weekend.
- 33:28Speaker 2: Are you confident about the stability of that seas far?
- 33:32Speaker 12: Well, look, there was a delay already overnight. They had
- 33:36Speaker 12: apparently Hummas reckons that they didn't have together the list
- 33:40Speaker 12: of the hostages that they were going to release. I mean,
- 33:43Speaker 12: come on, how long have you been negotiating this? There's
- 33:46Speaker 12: only thirty three that you're going to hand over. Surely
- 33:49Speaker 12: you would know, you know, hours beforehand. So I don't
- 33:53Speaker 12: know what was up with that, But I mean, you hope, so,
- 33:55Speaker 12: don't you. It's going to be in phases, So phase one,
- 33:58Speaker 12: I think is the thirty three. But we're going to
- 34:01Speaker 12: be in Tel Aviv talking to a reporter there who's
- 34:03Speaker 12: across the developments, and we'll find out that what's going on.
