- 0:03Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed to kick start
- 0:06your day in a positive way. I'm your host Andrew McGivern
- 0:09for August 17th. Today is National Black Cat
- 0:13Appreciation Day and it's about time these magnificent creatures
- 0:18got the recognition they deserve.
- 0:20For far too long, Black Cats have been the victims of
- 0:23superstition, fear, and unfair stereotypes that have nothing to
- 0:27do with their actual nature. Black Cat Appreciation Day exist
- 0:31to dispel the myths and celebrate these beautiful
- 0:34animals for what they really are.
- 0:37Loving, playful, intelligent companions who just happened to
- 0:40have sleek black coats. The sad truth is that Black Cats
- 0:45are the least likely to be adopted from shelters, not
- 0:48because there's anything wrong with them, but because of
- 0:52centuries old superstitions that have somehow survived into the
- 0:56modern world. In ancient Egypt, Black Cats
- 1:00were actually considered sacred and brought good luck.
- 1:04It wasn't until medieval Europe that they became associated with
- 1:08witchcraft and bad luck, a reputation that is unfairly
- 1:12stuck with them ever since. The reality Black Cats are just
- 1:17cats. They're no more likely to bring
- 1:20bad luck than a taddy or a calico.
- 1:24They purred just as sweetly, lay just as enthusiastically, and
- 1:28loved just as deeply as any other cat.
- 1:31Their black coat simply make them even more striking and
- 1:34elegant. Which brings us to today's quote
- 1:37from Mark Twain, who had a sharp wit when it came to human
- 1:41nature. You once said it's easier to
- 1:45fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.
- 1:51Mark Twain's observation hits right at the heart of why Black
- 1:54Cats face discrimination today. For centuries, people have been
- 2:00fooled by superstitions about Black Cats bringing bad luck,
- 2:05being associated with witches, or somehow being different than
- 2:10other cats. And even when presented with
- 2:13evidence that these beliefs are baseless, it's often easier for
- 2:19people to stick with the familiar myth than to admit
- 2:23they've been wrong. Think about it.
- 2:27Every single day, millions of Black Cats around the world go
- 2:30about normal cat business, sleeping in sunbeams, chasing
- 2:36toys, hurrying on laps, and being perfectly ordinary,
- 2:41wonderful companions. The evidence that they're just
- 2:45regular cats is overwhelming. Yet the superstitions persist.
- 2:51Twain understood that once an idea takes hold in their minds,
- 2:55especially one that's been passed down through generations,
- 2:59it becomes incredibly difficult to dislodge.
- 3:02It's easier to continue believing the familiar story
- 3:05than to question whether we might have been misled all
- 3:08along. But here's the hopeful part.
- 3:12Every time someone adopts a black cat and discovers how
- 3:15amazing they are, that's one more person who's broken free
- 3:19from the old foolishness. Every Black Cat Appreciation
- 3:24Day, more people learn the truth and choose facts over folklore.
- 3:29The Black Cats themselves, of course, couldn't care less about
- 3:32our human superstitions. They're too busy being cats,
- 3:36which is exactly as it should be.
- 3:38I've known several Black Cats over the years, and I actually
- 3:41had one for a while. We had a big mouse problem in a
- 3:45townhouse we were living at a number of years ago and decided
- 3:48to get a cat. And I've never been a cat guy.
- 3:51I've always been a dog guy. And truthfully, I didn't like
- 3:55cats. In fact, I hated cats.
- 3:58I think I talked about this in a recent episode.
- 4:01Anyways we got this black cat Jazz and she was an amazing
- 4:08mouser. She was just this little kitten
- 4:10and within within a few days she had eaten like 8 mice.
- 4:14It was amazing. Anyways one day she just never
- 4:19came back and after she was gone, few weeks later the mice
- 4:26were back. So we got 2 cats to replace
- 4:31Jazz, and we still have them to this day.
- 4:34That was seven or eight years ago, so nothing wrong with Black
- 4:38Cats. What I liked about Jazz wasn't
- 4:40even her color, and really, I didn't even think about it.
- 4:45It was her individual personality, her quirks, her
- 4:48capacity for love and play just like any other cat.
- 4:53But somehow, her sleek black coat made her bright eyes and
- 4:57pink nose even more striking. So today, in honor of National
- 5:03Black Cat Appreciation Day, maybe it's time to examine your
- 5:07own prejudices, not just about cats, but about anything we
- 5:12might be prejudging based on appearance rather than reality.
- 5:17If you're thinking about adopting a pet, consider
- 5:20visiting a shelter and meeting some of their Black Cats.
- 5:25You might just find that the best luck a black cat can bring
- 5:29is love and companionship, and they offer it every single day.
- 5:35I'm Adam McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 5:40tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 5:46with another daily quote.
