- 0:00Speaker 1: My philosophy was always to hire people who might one
- 0:03Speaker 1: day take my job. He tried to do exactly that.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Well, he was naked during the interview, so we decided
- 0:09Speaker 2: to pass.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Did you say naked? And I fired him on the spot. Ooh.
- 0:14Speaker 1: This is The Bad Hire, the show with the best
- 0:16Speaker 1: stories about the worst employees.
- 0:19Speaker 2: We fired him, of course.
- 0:21Speaker 1: People are crazy. It's like an HR nightmare. Right? One
- 0:24Speaker 1: bad hire stole all of it. Crazy stuff. She got
- 0:28Speaker 1: what she deserved. Oh! Oh, I'm your host, Ken Monroe.
- 0:32Speaker 1: And every week we dive into real life stories from
- 0:35Speaker 1: the wild world of work and what can happen when
- 0:39Speaker 1: the wrong person gets the job. These stories aren't just crazy.
- 0:43Speaker 1: They're cautionary tales about lessons learned the hard way. Let's
- 0:48Speaker 1: get started. All right. Hey, everyone. Welcome back to The
- 0:51Speaker 1: Bad Hire. The show where we take the best stories
- 0:57Speaker 1: and the most unfortunate employees. There you go. Interviews and
- 1:03Speaker 1: they collide and we tell great stories about it.
- 1:05Speaker 2: I feel like we have a slightly different tagline every time.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Yeah, it is. Nathan's like, we need the tagline and
- 1:12Speaker 1: I say it different every time.
- 1:13Speaker 2: He's like, but it's always kind of fun to see like,
- 1:15Speaker 2: what's the tagline going to be this time?
- 1:17Speaker 3: You only have it right then you're in front of
- 1:18Speaker 3: him to read it.
- 1:20Speaker 1: The show with the best stories is, And the worst employees.
- 1:23Speaker 1: And I hate saying the worst employees. I just think
- 1:26Speaker 1: it's so negative. So I changed it to unfortunate. I know.
- 1:31Speaker 1: But I changed it to unfortunate today. I was like,
- 1:34Speaker 1: it's unfortunate. It's like, who knows what the experience is.
- 1:37Speaker 2: That's in our TikTok bio right now. We can change
- 1:40Speaker 2: it to unfortunate, though. I guess that makes sense.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Or we can be the unfortunate hire. Change it to
- 1:46Speaker 1: the unfortunate hire. Oh, man, that stresses me out.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Thinking about all this stuff, I'll have to change.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Emma, can you just redesign everything? I do like the
- 1:57Speaker 1: title of the show. I think it looks good on stuff.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Like when you put a hat on that says the
- 2:02Speaker 1: bad hire. Well, it's also one of those things where
- 2:04Speaker 1: I've worn one and someone would be like, bro, what
- 2:06Speaker 1: is that? It's like, I was a bad hire.
- 2:09Speaker 2: It was one of those things where we were all
- 2:10Speaker 2: kind of surprised that thebadhire.com was available. Like, oh, we
- 2:14Speaker 2: got thebadhire.com.
- 2:16Speaker 1: When I typed that in, it was always available. I
- 2:17Speaker 1: bought it like eight seconds. Yeah. It's like the best
- 2:20Speaker 1: $ 10 you've ever spent. It was. It works. Worst case scenario, sooner,
- 2:27Speaker 1: you know, this doesn't work out. This show, you know,
- 2:31Speaker 1: we stop. I'll just take, you know, I'll just take, like,
- 2:36Speaker 1: people's pictures that are like really terrible employees and just
- 2:38Speaker 1: post them. Here's the bad hire. Yeah. That'd actually be mean. Yeah.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Oh my God. That's funny. Well, Emma, Nathan. Emma, nice
- 2:47Speaker 1: to have you back. I see a comment when you
- 2:49Speaker 1: came in, you got your game face on.
- 2:51Speaker 3: I guess.
- 2:53Speaker 1: It's the same face I always have on. They're ready
- 2:55Speaker 1: to go. Oh my God. All right. So you guys, uh,
- 2:59Speaker 1: You guys know the drill. We're looking for stories and
- 3:02Speaker 1: we'd love to hear yours. So, you know, whether it's
- 3:05Speaker 1: a funny story, a bad hire story, a bad interview story,
- 3:09Speaker 1: you know, the range of stories we've heard is crazy,
- 3:13Speaker 1: but what we would just want to hear your stories
- 3:15Speaker 1: that you have when it comes to hiring people, employing people,
- 3:19Speaker 1: you know, not to make fun of it, but to
- 3:21Speaker 1: just have fun about it. And, you know, we want
- 3:26Speaker 1: to run with your stories and tell them. And so
- 3:28Speaker 1: if you'll submit them, Our stories, you can either do
- 3:31Speaker 1: a segment. You'll see some segments today or see at
- 3:33Speaker 1: least one segment today. You can sign up for that,
- 3:36Speaker 1: and we'll interview you with one of our producers, let
- 3:38Speaker 1: you tell your story that way. Or you can submit
- 3:40Speaker 1: your story and write in, and we'll read it. And
- 3:44Speaker 1: if you have the best story for the year, you
- 3:48Speaker 1: have a chance to win $ 10, 000. And we'll give away $ 10, 000
- 3:50Speaker 1: at the year anniversary of the show and figure out
- 3:51Speaker 1: another project. promotion or something to do the next year,
- 4:00Speaker 1: but it's, it's doing good. I've enjoyed the, uh, I
- 4:04Speaker 1: don't enjoy the stories so far. Yeah. It's been fun.
- 4:06Speaker 2: We've had some sent in that we've been recording more
- 4:09Speaker 2: of these segments and all those all get entered to
- 4:12Speaker 2: win the, win the prize. And so if you have
- 4:14Speaker 2: a story you want to be shown, like we're doing today,
- 4:17Speaker 2: we're like, we actually show a clip of you, you
- 4:19Speaker 2: telling your story. You can enter that way. Or if
- 4:21Speaker 2: you don't want to do that, you can just type
- 4:23Speaker 2: it in. We'll just read it out loud. And then,
- 4:24Speaker 2: you know, There are lots of different ways to win
- 4:26Speaker 2: some money.
- 4:26Speaker 1: But you can find us at thebadhire.com. Not hard to
- 4:30Speaker 1: figure out. Yeah. Thebadhire.com. If you go there, you can
- 4:32Speaker 1: find a forum. You can reach out. And, you know,
- 4:37Speaker 1: we send out a lot of email to folks in
- 4:39Speaker 1: the hiring business to ask them to consider being on
- 4:42Speaker 1: the show or to ask them to submit a story.
- 4:45Speaker 1: So if you get an email from us, answer it.
- 4:49Speaker 1: That's what we really would just say. Let us know
- 4:52Speaker 1: that you– if you're in the hiring business, you've got
- 4:55Speaker 1: a story. Well, it's funny because I know– because if
- 4:58Speaker 1: we sat down and we talked, you've got to joke
- 5:00Speaker 1: it around, relax a little bit. Sooner or later, your
- 5:03Speaker 1: hiring stories are going to come out.
- 5:04Speaker 2: And everybody we've been sending out– because we have been
- 5:06Speaker 2: sending out a bunch of emails trying to get people
- 5:08Speaker 2: to come be a guest on the show more or less.
- 5:10Speaker 1: In one way or another.
- 5:10Speaker 2: And we either get the response of no, never talk
- 5:14Speaker 2: to me again.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Or that sounds like a lot of fun. There's not
- 5:18Speaker 1: a whole lot. Never get the, no, never talk to
- 5:20Speaker 1: me again.
- 5:21Speaker 2: There's a little bit of that in there, but I
- 5:23Speaker 2: think they probably say that to everybody.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 5:26Speaker 2: And maybe then they're not a good fit for the show,
- 5:28Speaker 2: but we haven't had a lot of people saying like,
- 5:29Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that sounds fun. And like, let me know
- 5:31Speaker 2: how I can be involved. And that's how we've had
- 5:33Speaker 2: people send in their segments or coming here to be in,
- 5:36Speaker 2: in person on the show.
- 5:37Speaker 1: And it's been a fun, a fun project. Oh, I
- 5:39Speaker 1: love it. Yeah. All right. So, uh, I guess I'll
- 5:42Speaker 1: go first. Is that right? Okay. So, Here we go.
- 5:45Speaker 1: I don't know where this one came from, but when
- 5:49Speaker 1: I was a creative director at a major advertising agency,
- 5:53Speaker 1: I once hired a junior copywriter who seemed brilliant in
- 5:57Speaker 1: the interviews. Smart, confident, full of ideas. My instinct told
- 6:03Speaker 1: me something was off, but I ignored it. Oh. My
- 6:07Speaker 1: philosophy was always to hire people who might one day
- 6:11Speaker 1: take my job. Mm-hmm. He tried to do exactly that
- 6:16Speaker 1: almost immediately. Really? I'm here to take your job. He
- 6:20Speaker 1: certainly thought highly of himself. Within weeks, I caught him
- 6:24Speaker 1: going behind my back to pitch ideas directly to my
- 6:28Speaker 1: boss after I had rejected them. Wow. I warned him
- 6:32Speaker 1: once and he apologized, but the behavior continued. He spent hours.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Most of his time flattering executives and trying to impress
- 6:38Speaker 1: leadership while treating his peers, especially junior staff, terribly. Sounds
- 6:43Speaker 1: like God knows how to work the system. I guess so. Ironically,
- 6:47Speaker 1: despite his reputation with management, which apparently was good. He
- 6:51Speaker 1: had a good reputation with management. His actual work was mediocre.
- 6:56Speaker 1: His real talent was convincing people he was brilliant. That's
- 7:00Speaker 1: good talent. Six months in. The managing director called me
- 7:04Speaker 1: into his office and told me this employee had complained
- 7:08Speaker 1: about how I evaluated his creative work. To my surprise,
- 7:11Speaker 1: my boss seemed to be taking his side.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Oh, no.
- 7:15Speaker 1: This is not going well. This guy's a genius. So
- 7:19Speaker 1: I said, there will always be someone complaining as long
- 7:22Speaker 1: as someone's willing to listen. Now tell me, who do
- 7:26Speaker 1: I go to if I need to complain about you? Oh, wow.
- 7:31Speaker 1: He had no answer. I walked straight to the copywriter's
- 7:34Speaker 1: office and I fired him on the spot. Ooh. Dang.
- 7:37Speaker 1: To this day, it's still one of the most satisfying
- 7:40Speaker 1: decisions I've ever made.
- 7:42Speaker 3: This person sounds like, the person that they hired sounds
- 7:47Speaker 3: like the strategic initiative guy.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Like, do you remember that story?
- 7:51Speaker 2: The guy who was just a bunch of random various
- 7:54Speaker 2: tasks and responsibilities.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Yeah, he was like, I have this very top secret
- 7:57Speaker 3: project that I'm working on. It's super strategic, super confidential.
- 8:00Speaker 1: It's always worked on something important. Sounds really cool, but
- 8:03Speaker 1: doesn't actually work. Yeah, this guy's going up to the
- 8:06Speaker 1: senior people and like, oh yeah, I'm losing this big project.
- 8:09Speaker 1: You're going to love it. Yeah. Smoothing them. So this
- 8:12Speaker 1: guy knew how to, he knew how to schmooze up
- 8:15Speaker 1: and really trash talk down.
- 8:17Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:18Speaker 2: Which sounds like a toxic combination, I guess.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Emma, did you find the story on Reddit? Yeah.
- 8:24Speaker 2: As soon as you started reading, she started laughing. I
- 8:25Speaker 2: was like, oh, she knows the story. She was the
- 8:29Speaker 2: one to find it.
- 8:31Speaker 1: That's funny.
- 8:32Speaker 2: That is kind of a scary combination of people who
- 8:34Speaker 2: can get in there and just like be toxic down here,
- 8:38Speaker 2: but then like schmooze the people up here. It's like,
- 8:40Speaker 2: you don't want to work with anybody like that.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Yeah. Can you imagine, you know, you hire somebody who's
- 8:44Speaker 1: like a junior and you, They're pitching you ideas and
- 8:48Speaker 1: then you, in an ad agency, which is just, you know, that's,
- 8:51Speaker 1: it's just idea pitching, right? Yeah, that's true. And then,
- 8:55Speaker 1: you know, you see them circle around and, you know,
- 8:59Speaker 1: they're in there talking to your balls, pitching an idea
- 9:01Speaker 1: around you.
- 9:02Speaker 2: Yeah, it's pretty much like asking your mom for something.
- 9:04Speaker 2: She says no. They're like, let me go sneak and
- 9:06Speaker 2: ask my dad. That's not so loud.
- 9:11Speaker 1: It does kind of sound like art. A little bit
- 9:12Speaker 1: of that. Mom said we could go get McDonald's. Yeah, yeah.
- 9:16Speaker 1: Might be okay at home. Before we dive back into
- 9:20Speaker 1: the chaos on the bad hire, this episode is brought
- 9:22Speaker 1: to you by B-Checks. Hiring shouldn't feel like rolling the dice.

- 9:56Speaker 1: Go to bchecks.io. That's B-C-H. All right. I got a
- 10:03Speaker 1: couple of stories.
- 10:04Speaker 2: The first one, I've got a video clip from an
- 10:06Speaker 2: interview that I did and I've got a story to
- 10:08Speaker 2: read out loud.
- 10:09Speaker 1: So we want to play this clip.
- 10:12Speaker 4: I was working in Florida, installing a performance appraisal system
- 10:16Speaker 4: for the company. And we were bringing on all the
- 10:19Speaker 4: managers to Florida for a week from Texas. And while
- 10:23Speaker 4: I was gone, my admin, she'd been promoted and she
- 10:27Speaker 4: was hiring a replacement. And so I, and she was phenomenal.
- 10:30Speaker 4: She was, that's why she was being promoted. And the
- 10:32Speaker 4: new admin was started. And for six weeks, I'm offsite.
- 10:37Speaker 4: I'm not in the office. So relying on getting phone calls, messages,
- 10:42Speaker 4: things that are coming in, things that need to be
- 10:44Speaker 4: done and things are getting missed. It was just very,
- 10:48Speaker 4: very odd. And I talked with the employee a couple
- 10:50Speaker 4: of times and said, you know, do you remember that
- 10:53Speaker 4: you got a call from ABC and they needed me
- 10:56Speaker 4: to call them and contact them? No, I don't remember that.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Okay.
- 11:00Speaker 4: And so it happened a few times. And finally I said,
- 11:03Speaker 4: are you writing down messages? And she said, I don't
- 11:07Speaker 4: have time to do that. And I said, well, you're
- 11:10Speaker 4: going to have to, because you're not remembering messages. And
- 11:13Speaker 4: so she started writing them down. And when I'd get
- 11:16Speaker 4: called to get them at the end of the day,
- 11:18Speaker 4: she'd say, oh, I forgot to write the phone number down.
- 11:20Speaker 4: I've got his first name, but I don't have.
- 11:26Speaker 4: It was not comical, but it was comical. And she
- 11:30Speaker 4: did not meet the 90 days.
- 11:33Speaker 1: It's not funny, but it is. It's like an admin.
- 11:36Speaker 1: It's like a receptionist. I'm remembering that story. I like
- 11:40Speaker 1: the way she told that. That was good. I like
- 11:43Speaker 1: the way she told that.
- 11:43Speaker 2: It's like, hey, your one job is to write down
- 11:45Speaker 2: messages and get them to me.
- 11:47Speaker 1: He's like, oh, I don't have time for that. Who
- 11:49Speaker 1: writes down their first name? And Bob called you. Yeah,
- 11:53Speaker 1: not even a last name either. What's Bob's number? Oh,
- 11:56Speaker 1: you don't know? Yeah. I have to write down the
- 12:00Speaker 1: phone number too? Here's how that, hey, hey.
- 12:03Speaker 3: You're really asking a lot of me here to write
- 12:05Speaker 3: down the name and the number.
- 12:07Speaker 1: Okay, so it's like, hey, it's Bob. Right, Bob calls
- 12:11Speaker 1: and she says, the girl's like, yeah, hey, Bob. Can you,
- 12:16Speaker 1: is so-and-so there? No, they're not. Can I take a message? Yeah,
- 12:19Speaker 1: it's Bob so-and-so. And she's like, okay, Bob, I got it. E-O-B, Bob.
- 12:25Speaker 2: Okay, bye.
- 12:26Speaker 1: Call me back at this number, and I need to
- 12:28Speaker 1: pass on this message. Okay, got it. Bob called you. Bob.
- 12:32Speaker 1: What did you say? Which one?
- 12:33Speaker 2: This is Bob.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't know.
- 12:35Speaker 3: Because imagine there's more than one Bob, and you don't
- 12:40Speaker 3: know which one it is.
- 12:40Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 12:41Speaker 2: What else is the admin doing that they don't have
- 12:42Speaker 2: time to write down some messages or write down a number?
- 12:47Speaker 1: That's funny. Yes, you cracked yourself up talking about it.
- 12:51Speaker 1: You know, for those of you who don't remember, it
- 12:55Speaker 1: used to be that you had people call and you
- 12:58Speaker 1: would get messages and they would be voicemail. I know voicemail.
- 13:03Speaker 1: If you had an assistant back in the day, even
- 13:05Speaker 1: when you had voicemail, you know, your assistant would take
- 13:09Speaker 1: the message. You had these pads where like pages of
- 13:14Speaker 1: messages would be on them. You know, and you'd get
- 13:16Speaker 1: these little slips of paper with here's people who called you.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Have you got a slip of paper with Bob? It'd
- 13:21Speaker 1: be like get an email from your assistant that just
- 13:24Speaker 1: said Bob called. Yeah. Like what?
- 13:27Speaker 2: Or it's like Jerry is in the hospital and needs
- 13:29Speaker 2: help and called this number and you need to be
- 13:31Speaker 2: here at this time.
- 13:32Speaker 1: And then you just get the message like, oh, somebody's
- 13:33Speaker 1: in the hospital. It's like a who? What? What are
- 13:35Speaker 1: the details? Someone in hospital. Yeah. Bob called. Someone's hurt.
- 13:40Speaker 1: I need some details here. Oh, my God. Anyway, I
- 13:43Speaker 1: said that. That's funny.
- 13:44Speaker 2: All right, the other one I just found on Reddit,
- 13:46Speaker 2: but here we go. I once set up a job
- 13:50Speaker 2: interview for my friend's nephew. Let's call the nephew Paul.
- 13:55Speaker 2: A company that I knew was hiring about 30 college
- 13:58Speaker 2: students for summer work, and that nephew's major lined up
- 14:02Speaker 2: perfectly with what the company actually did. And I also
- 14:05Speaker 2: knew the hiring manager for this job personally, so I
- 14:08Speaker 2: felt like it was a great opportunity. A couple weeks later,
- 14:11Speaker 2: the nephew's uncle emailed me and asked how things went.
- 14:15Speaker 2: So I reached out to my friend in HR, and
- 14:17Speaker 2: I said to him, hey, how'd the interview go? The
- 14:19Speaker 2: HR guy said, great, we needed 30 people, and we
- 14:24Speaker 2: only had to interview 31 candidates.
- 14:26Speaker 1: So we were able to fill all the spots. I said, oh,
- 14:29Speaker 1: that's nice. So how.
- 14:30Speaker 2: Was Paul one of them? And there was an awkward pause.
- 14:33Speaker 2: He said, yes, he was. And I said, what happened?
- 14:40Speaker 2: He goes, well, he was naked during the interview, so
- 14:42Speaker 2: we decided to pass.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Did you say naked?
- 14:46Speaker 2: He was naked during the interview, so I decided to pass.
- 14:48Speaker 1: I said, what?
- 14:49Speaker 2: Are you serious? There's no way that he would show
- 14:51Speaker 2: up to an interview naked. And my friend said, well,
- 14:54Speaker 2: it was a Zoom interview. uh, apparently when they started
- 14:58Speaker 2: the call and they turn on the video, Paul was
- 15:00Speaker 2: just lying in bed completely naked. And so I said,
- 15:03Speaker 2: I said to the HR guy, well, maybe he didn't
- 15:05Speaker 2: realize that you could see him. Was it, maybe he
- 15:07Speaker 2: thought it was audio only. And my friend said, well,
- 15:09Speaker 2: that's what we thought too. So we told him, Hey,
- 15:11Speaker 2: just so you know, we can see you. And Paul said, Oh, sorry.
- 15:14Speaker 2: He pulled a sheet up over, over himself. And they said,
- 15:17Speaker 2: do you want to reschedule the interview?
- 15:19Speaker 1: He's like, no, I'm good. We can keep going. And so, yeah,
- 15:21Speaker 1: we decided to pass. So sorry about that, Paul. Oh,
- 15:24Speaker 1: my God. How old is Paul? I don't know.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Hopefully at least 18.
- 15:31Speaker 1: I sure would hope so.
- 15:33Speaker 2: So he was the 31st candidate and didn't get that
- 15:36Speaker 2: one empty spot.
- 15:37Speaker 1: We take 30 out of 31. You're the 34th. And
- 15:40Speaker 1: it happens to be the guy that was referred.
- 15:42Speaker 3: This is like Cat Nuzzler 2.0.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Yeah, it totally is.
- 15:46Speaker 2: The naked Cat Nuzzler is still my favorite story.
- 15:48Speaker 1: No, it's good of a T-shirt. I will guarantee you
- 15:54Speaker 1: there are so many Zoom interviews from Ben. Just really bad,
- 15:59Speaker 1: just great stories about really bad interviews on Zoom. Yeah.
- 16:02Speaker 1: You know, because here we've had, I've had a couple where,
- 16:08Speaker 1: you know, I've just really had to get on someone
- 16:10Speaker 1: about how they got onto a Zoom call. You know, just,
- 16:15Speaker 1: you know. I don't know. I think we talked about
- 16:17Speaker 1: this before. You remember the first, you know, when COVID
- 16:21Speaker 1: first happened, everybody went and everybody showed up to Zoom
- 16:23Speaker 1: the next week and everyone was looking sharp. Yeah. Dressed up.
- 16:28Speaker 2: They actually suit and tie everything. And then it was
- 16:31Speaker 2: suit and tie with sweatpants. And then it was just
- 16:33Speaker 2: all sweatpants and everything.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Yeah. Slowly just everybody. And then it was Paul just
- 16:37Speaker 1: not wearing anything. You know, I haven't showered in a week.
- 16:40Speaker 1: You know, everybody turns. It went from bright eyed and
- 16:43Speaker 1: everybody's going to all cameras off. Yeah. You know? Well,
- 16:46Speaker 1: there goes your camera on. I'm actually at Marshall's right now.
- 16:51Speaker 1: I'm going to check out my cats. Yeah. There's a
- 16:55Speaker 1: lot of those stories too. I had a call with
- 16:57Speaker 1: someone this today. I mean, yesterday, and it was three,
- 17:02Speaker 1: three folks from their, from their team. And one of them,
- 17:05Speaker 1: they had the fake backgrounds going, you know, and one
- 17:11Speaker 1: of them was sound like he was standing on a
- 17:13Speaker 1: street corner. I mean, it was just like, traffic, other people, voices.
- 17:20Speaker 1: I mean, it was, I was like, this guy, I
- 17:23Speaker 1: think he's, maybe he was sitting in his car. You know,
- 17:26Speaker 1: I don't know, but I was like, really? Why did
- 17:29Speaker 1: you get on this phone call?
- 17:31Speaker 2: If you're going to, you know, at least put it
- 17:33Speaker 2: on mute. Wait, Marcus, can you actually pull up a
- 17:36Speaker 2: clip from YouTube real fast? Would that be hard? I
- 17:39Speaker 2: was working in- Just go to YouTube real fast and
- 17:43Speaker 2: type this in, because- I want you to see this again.
- 17:49Speaker 2: There's this one guy who, especially during COVID, he would
- 17:51Speaker 2: just go around doing interviews and stuff like with a
- 17:55Speaker 2: green screen behind him, but it was like attached to
- 17:57Speaker 2: his back as he's doing all these crazy things like
- 17:59Speaker 2: snowboarding and stuff and just pretend like everything's fine as
- 18:03Speaker 2: he's like flying through the air. So if you go
- 18:04Speaker 2: to YouTube, just type in it's Frankie LaPenna and just
- 18:09Speaker 2: like water slide or something like that and green screen
- 18:13Speaker 2: or something like that.
- 18:15Speaker 1: Because I think, Ken, you need to see this. Yeah,
- 18:18Speaker 1: I'm always, I'm not a big fan of the fake
- 18:21Speaker 1: backgrounds anyway. You know, I just, I was, the same call,
- 18:27Speaker 1: two of them had the exact same background on. Yeah. Right? Oh,
- 18:31Speaker 1: that's right.
- 18:32Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:33Speaker 1: And I'm like, I don't know, it looks weird. You're
- 18:36Speaker 1: looking at them and like, they look like they're standing
- 18:38Speaker 1: in some room at some random place. It's been a
- 18:43Speaker 1: really ripe opportunity. But I think Q4 is going to
- 18:46Speaker 1: be even bigger for us. Yeah, Frank, do you have
- 18:48Speaker 1: those projections for Q3? Yeah, let me pull them up
- 18:51Speaker 1: right here real quick. I'll pull them up at you. Oh,
- 18:53Speaker 1: s * * *, my brakes. Hey, Frank, are you okay, man? Oh,
- 18:56Speaker 1: s * * *, my brakes. Oh, s * * *,
- 18:58Speaker 1: my brakes. Made it big from doing that, apparently, ended up.
- 19:05Speaker 2: So I guess maybe start, I always thought like one
- 19:07Speaker 2: or two of those, maybe start as a thing and
- 19:09Speaker 2: then you just took it to the extreme, whereas I
- 19:11Speaker 2: got an NFL game or whatever. but I think the
- 19:13Speaker 2: first one he was actually pranking somebody and it was
- 19:15Speaker 2: like semi-believable at first and then it just went to
- 19:18Speaker 2: the extreme, but that probably originated during COVID.
- 19:21Speaker 1: No, it's, I hate it. There he is. It's like, watch,
- 19:23Speaker 1: I hate the fake backgrounds now.
- 19:25Speaker 2: I think I've got a fake background, so I got
- 19:28Speaker 2: to change mine because I'm on Zoom a lot.
- 19:30Speaker 1: I mean, I get it if you just don't have
- 19:33Speaker 1: the right place. Mine's B-checks branded at least, though. Yeah, no.
- 19:36Speaker 1: So I got that going. Well, if they do something
- 19:38Speaker 1: like that, right, if you brand it and it's just,
- 19:41Speaker 1: you know, yours. That's kind of cool. But I was
- 19:46Speaker 1: sitting there on the thing and like two people side
- 19:48Speaker 1: by side, it looks like they're sitting in the same
- 19:52Speaker 1: exact room. Yeah.
- 19:53Speaker 2: Because you get on Google Meet or Zoom or whatever
- 19:56Speaker 2: and they have the virtual screens. Yeah. And there's like
- 20:00Speaker 2: the first choice for everybody. So everybody kind of all
- 20:02Speaker 2: has that same living room as their background.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Yeah. In fact, make sure this happens here. Right. If
- 20:08Speaker 1: we're going to put backgrounds, it should be backgrounds of
- 20:11Speaker 1: our office. Like take photos, you know, have somebody take
- 20:15Speaker 1: photos in our office. You know, we've got really cool office.
- 20:18Speaker 2: So you can't tell if it's Gold Hill.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Why would we have some fake office in New York,
- 20:23Speaker 1: you know, in the background? We could get, you know,
- 20:26Speaker 1: they have those, you know.
- 20:27Speaker 2: They have those looping live video backgrounds. So we just
- 20:29Speaker 2: have one of like looping a Randall Betwalk around in
- 20:32Speaker 2: the background and stuff like that.
- 20:34Speaker 1: I heard some guy talking the other day. I think
- 20:37Speaker 1: he was a judge and he was furious about somebody
- 20:41Speaker 1: who had, you know, got online and had that and
- 20:44Speaker 1: it had a cat. The video was a cat walking
- 20:48Speaker 1: back and forth behind the guy. He was so furious
- 20:53Speaker 1: over it. I'm just like, you know, I don't know.
- 20:55Speaker 1: I don't know why.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Well, you can make your own virtual video background behind you.
- 20:59Speaker 2: And there's this one where a guy sitting at his thing,
- 21:03Speaker 2: he had pre-recorded. him walking up behind himself and pouring
- 21:06Speaker 2: himself a cup of coffee. So during the fall, he's
- 21:09Speaker 2: sitting there and just like his cologne comes up and
- 21:11Speaker 2: just pours him a cup of coffee.
- 21:12Speaker 1: Early in COVID, I did that. Oh, really? Did you
- 21:16Speaker 1: break somebody? I was such an idiot. I cut a
- 21:20Speaker 1: video of me walking into my office and walking behind
- 21:22Speaker 1: and doing something behind me and then came in and
- 21:26Speaker 1: then I had stopped and looked down at myself. And
- 21:29Speaker 1: so when it happened, I was like looked up at myself. Oh,
- 21:32Speaker 1: it's Ken's twin. Yeah. Walking behind you. That's right in
- 21:35Speaker 1: the middle of a meeting that pulled it off. That's funny. Yeah.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Lots of green screen talk. All right. So what's up?
- 21:40Speaker 1: Are you, you still got to go? Yeah. Oh, okay.
- 21:43Speaker 1: So we just went off the rails. Are we ready?
- 21:46Speaker 1: All right. We're done with green screen. We're ready. Let's go.
- 21:50Speaker 3: This one sounds really similar to the one that you
- 21:53Speaker 3: just told.
- 21:55Speaker 1: So here we go.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Years ago, a colleague and I interviewed a man named
- 21:58Speaker 3: Miles for a very junior civil service position. On paper,
- 22:02Speaker 3: he was overqualified, private school, a law degree, well-spoken, so
- 22:06Speaker 3: we assumed he had simply taken an unusual career path.
- 22:10Speaker 3: For about a year, he did the job reasonably well,
- 22:12Speaker 3: though coworkers noticed he was moody and often rude, even
- 22:16Speaker 3: to his own family when they called the office. Eventually,
- 22:18Speaker 3: complaints started coming in that he ignored instructions or treated
- 22:22Speaker 3: colleagues poorly. It became clear Miles believed the job and
- 22:26Speaker 3: many people around him were beneath him. I sat him
- 22:29Speaker 3: down and explained that while he was free to aim
- 22:30Speaker 3: for something better, he still needed to do the job
- 22:32Speaker 3: he'd been hired for. Instead of responding normally, he stood
- 22:36Speaker 3: there silently, furious, clenching his fists like a child being scolded.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Oh wow, like Arthur in the meme.
- 22:42Speaker 3: Yes. Yes, exactly like that.
- 22:44Speaker 1: What are y'all talking about?
- 22:47Speaker 3: We'll have to get to that.
- 22:50Speaker 1: Not long after, I moved to another role.
- 22:52Speaker 3: One of Miles' new tasks was organizing staff photos for
- 22:55Speaker 3: updated security passes. Oddly, he photographed everyone except me. After
- 23:00Speaker 3: three months, I had to order him to come take
- 23:02Speaker 3: the photo, which he did reluctantly, and then lost it.
- 23:06Speaker 3: My pass was never issued. I warned leadership that his
- 23:09Speaker 3: attitude would eventually cause a serious problem, but they dismissed it.
- 23:13Speaker 3: A few months later, the department sold some old filing cabinets.
- 23:17Speaker 3: Miles had been told to make sure they were empty
- 23:19Speaker 3: before they went out.
- 23:20Speaker 1: He didn't bother.
- 23:21Speaker 3: The company that bought them later contacted us to say
- 23:24Speaker 3: several cabinets still contained confidential files, personal information about members
- 23:28Speaker 3: of the public. That was the moment everyone finally realized
- 23:31Speaker 3: Miles was exactly the problem I had warned them about.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Oh, Miles, that's not good.
- 23:37Speaker 2: Man, it always starts with, like, a bad attitude, too. Like, oh,
- 23:40Speaker 2: this is all beneath me. Yeah.
- 23:42Speaker 1: That's crazy. I think kind of a theme of, like... Yeah,
- 23:47Speaker 1: of today's episodes. Yeah. And, well, just in general, you
- 23:50Speaker 1: see these stories where there's, like, the steam of... I
- 23:53Speaker 1: don't know. They have, like... I'm going to look it up.
- 23:57Speaker 1: What are you looking up? I'll mark it. Okay. What
- 24:02Speaker 1: are you... Yeah. Stop clutching your fist. Yeah. There you go.
- 24:08Speaker 1: So that was Miles. So in the story, your guy
- 24:11Speaker 1: would do this with his fist? Yeah.
- 24:13Speaker 2: That's right before he punched his sister, DW, I think,
- 24:16Speaker 2: in the famous episode. So that was Miles just thinking
- 24:21Speaker 2: that he was better than everybody else, I guess. So
- 24:25Speaker 2: at first, it was him being prideful, and then it
- 24:27Speaker 2: was him... Was he doing that on purpose, leaving the
- 24:30Speaker 2: files in the filing cabinet? Or was he just being
- 24:33Speaker 2: bad at his job?
- 24:33Speaker 1: I guess.
- 24:34Speaker 3: I think he was just doing it on purpose because
- 24:36Speaker 3: he thought that everybody was beneath him.
- 24:38Speaker 1: So he was like, I don't have to listen to
- 24:39Speaker 1: these people. I guess so. That's what it sounded like
- 24:41Speaker 1: to me. And then confidential info is getting out there. Yeah.
- 24:43Speaker 3: Wow.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Dang. That's crazy. Yeah. Is that it for you today? Yes,
- 24:49Speaker 1: that is all. Those are my stories too. Nice work. Yeah.
- 24:52Speaker 1: That was fun. Yeah. Good show. I liked it. Yeah.
- 24:57Speaker 1: This is our first YouTube pull up. It was. Thank you, Marcus. Thanks, Marcus.
- 25:02Speaker 1: Appreciate it. And thanks to Peter. Peter's the intern today.
- 25:06Speaker 1: We got a whole production team now. We're growing up.
- 25:09Speaker 1: Shout out to Charlotte Christian School. There you go.
- 25:13Speaker 3: Right?
- 25:14Speaker 1: He's getting his internship in. That's kind of cool. Nice. Yeah.
- 25:18Speaker 1: Loved it. My sister went there, so I had to
- 25:23Speaker 1: chop it up with him about it. We might be
- 25:25Speaker 1: recording that whole part.
- 25:26Speaker 2: Maybe we'll just patch it into the podcast.
- 25:29Speaker 1: We'll see. Hey, listen, we appreciate it. Uh, we love
- 25:32Speaker 1: doing it. Listen, if you're an owner, if you're a founder,

- 26:39Speaker 1: and like hold it up and go, here's the $ 10, 000. Yeah.
- 26:46Speaker 1: In hundreds, it's like, I'm really going to give this
- 26:48Speaker 1: money away. Yeah.
- 26:48Speaker 2: We'll have to get a whole briefcase of ones behind
- 26:50Speaker 2: you or something like that.
- 26:51Speaker 1: That'd look cool. Yeah. A briefcase with it. Yeah. And
- 26:53Speaker 1: when we give it away, let's do it that way.
- 26:55Speaker 1: That'd be cool. Like, you know. Because if it was hundreds,
- 26:58Speaker 1: it'd be like that big. Yeah. It'd be so much
