Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Bill Derrough: Former Democratic Party Treasurer on the high tensions on Election Day
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Donald Trump has just cast his vote in Palm Beach, Florida.
- 0:03Speaker 1: He says the biggest issue in his mind this election
- 0:06Speaker 1: was the border. We're going to Bill Darrow now. He's
- 0:08Speaker 1: a former d NC treasure a Democrat and is with
- 0:12Speaker 1: us live from New York City. Welcome to the show.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Thank you, good morning in New Zealand.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Thank you for being with me. First of all, no
- 0:19Speaker 1: matter who wins, how do you How are you feeling
- 0:22Speaker 1: about the state of your country right now?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Maybe maybe I'll be applying for New Zealand passport. I
- 0:31Speaker 2: don't know. It is. It is terrifyingly fraught right now.
- 0:38Speaker 2: The the tensions are very high, the the rhetoric is
- 0:45Speaker 2: is very intense. I think a lot of it has
- 0:48Speaker 2: to do with social media from outside the US. But
- 0:53Speaker 2: it's h's it's I've never seen it so divided in
- 0:58Speaker 2: my life.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Have Democrats lost the ability to penetrate and speak to
- 1:03Speaker 1: those white, middle class, working class voters that they need
- 1:07Speaker 1: to get Harris across the line?
- 1:10Speaker 2: Well, I do think that Democrats have lost some of
- 1:16Speaker 2: the ability to talk to those people. I don't know
- 1:20Speaker 2: that that will result in not getting across the line.
- 1:24Speaker 2: I think there's a bunch of different factors happening right now,
- 1:28Speaker 2: particularly with women. I'm very optimistic as a Democrat that
- 1:33Speaker 2: there's sort of a silent majority of women, large majority,
- 1:37Speaker 2: who are going to vote for Kamala Harris, not because
- 1:41Speaker 2: she's would be the first female president, but really to
- 1:46Speaker 2: stop the other side in the things that they have
- 1:49Speaker 2: been doing and saying, you know, with respect to women's
- 1:52Speaker 2: reproductive rights, with respect to women's rights in general, I
- 1:57Speaker 2: do think we have a lot of work to do
- 1:58Speaker 2: with the white working class. My father was a union carpenter,
- 2:02Speaker 2: so I'm very familiar with that that world, and I
- 2:08Speaker 2: do think having Tim Walls as as Vice president will
- 2:11Speaker 2: be will be helpful in connecting with people like that.
- 2:14Speaker 1: What's happening in You're in New York City right now,
- 2:16Speaker 1: what's happening there in terms of protest backlash? Preparing for
- 2:19Speaker 1: that potential.
- 2:23Speaker 2: I think that there is a sorry potential of a
- 2:26Speaker 2: Trump winner or a Harris Win.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Harris win, I think people in New.
- 2:33Speaker 2: York in general, I'm there is an interesting divide amongst
- 2:38Speaker 2: people who would traditionally be Democratic voters, but if they're
- 2:41Speaker 2: Jewish Americans, some of them are taking a different perspective
- 2:46Speaker 2: now because it's happening in the Middle East and I'm
- 2:48Speaker 2: going to stay out of that. Other than to say,
- 2:50Speaker 2: I think it's kind of silly on both sides. People
- 2:55Speaker 2: who who are not going to vote for Harris because
- 2:59Speaker 2: they don't think she's strong enough for people on the
- 3:01Speaker 2: other side saying she's not doing enough for the Gosins.
- 3:05Speaker 2: I'm not saying it's ridiculous and since that those are
- 3:07Speaker 2: huge issues. But I think clearly Donald Trump would be
- 3:11Speaker 2: worse for everybody over there. But I think in New
- 3:16Speaker 2: York a lot of people are nervous about what might happen.
- 3:21Speaker 2: That being said, it is predominantly a democratic city, but
- 3:27Speaker 2: I wouldn't be surprised if, you know, if Donald Trump
- 3:30Speaker 2: tonight has announced a winner in a massive landslide, then
- 3:34Speaker 2: I think you will see a bunch of people coming
- 3:35Speaker 2: out protesting, not unlike the Women's March you had after
- 3:39Speaker 2: the election in twenty sixteen.
- 3:40Speaker 1: So potential for protest either way. Bill, thank you very
- 3:43Speaker 1: much for being with us here in New Zealand today.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Great to have your company. That's Bill dere He's the
