Latest / May The Review Be With You / Furiosa: A MAD MAXED OUT REVIEW
Transcript
- 0:00Is the fifth installment technically takes place before Fury Road, so it's technically the
- 0:06fourth in the timeline. Actually, I might have messed that up too.
- 0:11Yeah, I think I think you should. We should stop talking. You
- 0:13know, we're not going to review this movie. It Actually we're done.
- 0:16Thank you for coming, you know, everybody, Hello, and welcome to
- 0:29May the review be with you with Nick and Joe. I'm Joe, I'm
- 0:32Nick, and today we are reviewing Furiosa, a Mad Max saga, mad
- 0:40Mas story. It's a Mad Max story. Where's Mad Max saga? Now?
- 0:44I don't know what is it? Nick? It's a saga. What's
- 0:47the difference? You tell me that rule me that? Well, it's part
- 0:51of the Mad Max saga, which began in nineteen seventy two. No,
- 0:55nineteen seventy nine. Almost mess that up. Nineteen seventy nine. I guess
- 0:59a saga film. Yeah, in saga. A saga is like a collection
- 1:03of stories. I suppose. All right, just toast infuriors now saga.
- 1:07I just got done watching this movie. This is a bit of a later
- 1:11review for us, even though we're getting this out at a bit of an
- 1:15earlier time, which is great. But Nick something that dawned on me while
- 1:22I was watching this movie. As I was diving into the sands of this
- 1:27movie, as it were, I realized twenty twenty four is the year of
- 1:34epic desert movies. Oh man, I mean I watched Dune two Part two
- 1:40again a couple of days ago, and then I went right into this well
- 1:46like, that's okay, right, so so so Dune two, right,
- 1:49furiosa mad Max saga. You got border Lands coming out later this year.
- 1:57Freaking Matt Web was, Oh no, sorry, that wasn't a desert.
- 2:01The theater was deserted. It's different. I'm so mad you just made that
- 2:13joke. I'm so mad. But anyway, the point stands. The stands.
- 2:21This is the year of epic desert movies. I've never wanted to hang
- 2:25out in a desert. Now That's all I want to do is start like
- 2:29a religious cult, or just like start a biker gang in a desert.
- 2:32Maybe have like a tricycle chariot. That sounds pretty cool. Careful what you
- 2:38wish for, Care for what you wish for. The heart inching toward that
- 2:43sort of apocalypse, aren't we Yeah, it gets more likely every day.
- 2:46However, if the trade off is a freaking awesome chariot of what is it?
- 2:51Was it three motorcycles? Three bikes? Three bikes? Yeah, it's
- 2:53just like an amazing and amazing what an amazing mode of transportation to have in
- 3:01the Oh yeah, apocalyptic, glorious, apocalyptic, glorious, glorious. Absolutely,
- 3:07that was one of my that was that was really awesome. Gosh,
- 3:13George Miller, Man, George Miller, Oh my goodness, right, the
- 3:16dude is seventy nine years old. Yeah, and managed to pull this off.
- 3:22Freaking unbelievable. I was. I was so surprised when I found out
- 3:24that he was still attached to this project. I could not believe it that
- 3:29he's still at the helm of this series, Like so so cool has lost
- 3:35a beat? No, I mean it's his story here. It's like,
- 3:38yeah, he's been telling these stories for since he was like I think,
- 3:42thirty four years old. And fun fact, he was a emergency room surgeon.
- 3:47Really used the money that he made to fund the first to help fund
- 3:53the first Mad Max movie back in back in the day with him and his
- 3:58co writer Byron no Way. Yeah, it's amazing, hot, damn.
- 4:03So that is amazing. What a good way to spend your money. Didn't.
- 4:06It wasn't until he was thirty four years old. So for all you
- 4:09out there, never too late, don't give up thirty fourth birthdays coming up?
- 4:14Oh oh oh, where's your Mad Max saga? Joe? It's do
- 4:20or Die coming up? We'll see stay tuned. So it is about that
- 4:31time. I say this reluctantly as it is a yeah, it's amazing how
- 4:39like we do this every time. I feel like I wouldn't better remind you
- 4:42I shouldn't have said anything because it's my turn. I shouldn't have said ship.
- 4:45I totally forgot Joe. It's your turn. Stop stop my turn,
- 4:54my turn for what? Uh? For those of you who don't know,
- 5:00every time we review a movie, we take turns giving a fifteen second summary.
- 5:06Joe has the honor of giving us a fifteen second summary of Furiosa,
- 5:11a Mad Max saga. He just got out of the theater, so this
- 5:15should be pretty good for Joe. I'm pausing just to make Joe a little
- 5:20nervous and forget everything he wants to say screws up. So anyway, trying
- 5:25to ice the kicker. You icing the kicker here? Yes, I am
- 5:28icing the kicker. In fact, all right, Joe, you have fifteen
- 5:31seconds to summarize Furiosa, a mad Max saga and three two one go.
- 5:39As a young girl, Furiosa is in the Green Place. She's abducted by
- 5:42a biker gang. Her mom tries to rescue her, but she's brutally murdered.
- 5:46The biker gang takes her, but then she's taken by Morgan Joe,
- 5:50and she gets caught in between a war between the two war dude, dude,
- 5:58you took your time there. I mean, so I had to say
- 6:01one more thing. I had to say one more thing. She gets her
- 6:04revenge on the biker guy. Like that's that's it. That's literally it.
- 6:08Listen, listen, listen. You took your happy ass time. Okay,
- 6:12this movie is broken down into five chapters, and you took eight of your
- 6:16eight of your fifteen seconds on the first chapter, which is the shortest part
- 6:21of the film. Really, what I should have done was three seconds per
- 6:26chapter. Yeah yeah, but you know you didn't think about that until afterwards.
- 6:32I didn't even bother mention preator Jack. Yeah. No love interest,
- 6:38which I thought was a pretty big, big point of the film's important,
- 6:42to be honest with you, it was that important. I enjoyed it.
- 6:46I enjoyed it, you know, I thought it was pretty important, you
- 6:49know, taught her the ropes. Anyway, you're grade as a C minus.
- 6:54I'll take it. I'll take it. You know. It's it's okay.
- 6:58Minus is fine. It's better than an F, which I will remind
- 7:00you, was your previous grade from one of your favorite movies. Yeah,
- 7:03that was not great. I want you to. I want you to linger
- 7:08in that. I want that to I want that to grow out of you
- 7:11like a like a tree of revenge, just just perennially growing. That will
- 7:15haunt me for the rest of my days. That was gross. In fact,
- 7:18it's very gross. It's pretty bad. So uh, C minus for
- 7:24you, Joe. But real quick, I did want to mention, because
- 7:26I did touch on it in a second ago, that this movie, which
- 7:29I enjoyed, was broken into five chapters. I thought that was really cool.
- 7:32Wasn't expecting that those five chapters I believe were called poll of Inaccessibility,
- 7:40Lessons from the Wasteland, the Stowaway, Homeward, and Beyond Vengeance, which
- 7:46is really cool. I don't know. I liked I liked the uh,
- 7:51the way that George Miller kind of broke up the storytelling there with giving us
- 7:56like those five sections. I thought that was cool. I don't want to
- 8:00I wonder why, but I would like to also comment on that. But
- 8:03however, before we get too far away from that first chapter, I just
- 8:07want to throw in a quick anecdote here. I actually missed the first title
- 8:13card of this movie because I sat in a theater with like three other people
- 8:20and we just sat there in darkness and there was just nothing. There was
- 8:26like no commercials, there were no previews, there was just nothing. We
- 8:28sat there for about twelve minutes, and like finally I was just like,
- 8:31well, I'm gonna go talk to someone. And I go to do that,
- 8:37and like I talked to like someone at concessions. I'm like, hey,
- 8:39like there's no movie playing in the theater. And she's like, oh
- 8:43yeah, let me get on that. And like she gets on like a
- 8:46phone and she's like, hey Jack, yeah, theater seven, yep,
- 8:50it's time. Okay bye, And I'm like okay, and like I walk
- 8:54back into the theater and I've missed the first minute. I was like,
- 8:58are you freaking kidding me? Like they didn't even do previews. They just
- 9:01shot right into the movie. The hell oh so bad. So so the
- 9:07guy that gets up to tell them that they need to put the movie on
- 9:11missus the first Yeah, I got punished. I got punished. That's really
- 9:15funny. Actually, you know that's why I messed up my summary neck because
- 9:18I didn't see the first minute of the movie. Yeah, that's not why
- 9:22it messed That makes sense if you don't think about it, it makes no
- 9:24sense. I do. We do have to call out the theater though.
- 9:28What was it? What was it an AMC? Was it a regal?
- 9:31Was it not? It's what is the COB? I want to say,
- 9:35it's not like a big franchise I don't think, well it was it was
- 9:39that theater that you got a free movie ticket to, The COB in downtown
- 9:46Orlando. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, okay, yeah,
- 9:50it's the Coup Plaza Cinema Cafe. Yeah, it's it's not it's not
- 9:54a big franchise film theater. Interesting. Interesting, that's that's actually really that's
- 10:00kind of cool that it's down in downtown where it's located, and it's just
- 10:03like a normal it's like privately owned I guess that's cool. I guess.
- 10:07I mean it would be even cooler if someone was doing their job that' that'd
- 10:09be awesome. All Right, Well, Joe missed the first title card,
- 10:15so he's gonna be upset about this for a while. All right, do
- 10:16your jobson, McCafe. Come on, what what you got? What's on
- 10:22your mind? So to get back into what you were saying with George Miller,
- 10:28I agree. I do enjoy the broken upness of this film. They're
- 10:33just like all real quick, just word vomit of like initial impressions. Super
- 10:39cool that we got to see the Green Place. It was quite abundant,
- 10:46honestly abundance. Seeing it actually kind of made me a little sad. And
- 10:52I think it's really interesting that we still don't know why it becomes that swamp
- 10:56land. Yeah maybe that's a it's something that's in the works. I don't
- 11:01know, but uh, yeah, that's that's interesting. Chris Hemsworth is is
- 11:07thor Ish, but in a very different, in a very subtly different way
- 11:13that I really appreciated. And honestly, I think he has way more talking
- 11:16lines than Anna Taylor Joy in this movie. And yeah, probably should be
- 11:20considered the star. I just saying, even though he's not the main character.
- 11:24I mean, he is a main character, right, but he has
- 11:28way more speaking lines. Anya Taylor Joy has I think thirty lines, and
- 11:33her first line isn't even until chapter three. Is that? Is that for
- 11:37real? It's that until chapter three? Yeah, chapter three is her first
- 11:41line. So because the first two chapters are are like her when she's younger,
- 11:52and like her her her story at the beginning of her life. So
- 11:56we don't see Anya Taylor until the third chapter, and which you know,
- 12:03from a storytelling pertive perspective, I love this. I knew that we were
- 12:07going to get kind of the origin story of Furiosa here. Obviously the movie
- 12:11is called Furiosa, but I was not expecting to get that much younger like
- 12:18girl Furiosa. Like I don't know the timing of it. I don't know
- 12:22how much time actually screen time. It was like maybe like thirty minutes,
- 12:26maybe forty minutes, whatever it was. It was. It was more than
- 12:30I was expecting from like when she was a kid. You know, I
- 12:33was not expecting to see on Anya Taylor that late, not that it was
- 12:37that late, right, because she was she was on screen for most of
- 12:39it, but it felt much later than I was expecting, but I was
- 12:43close to half the film. It was really cool. The child actress whose
- 12:48name is escaping me right now, but yeah, it was. I agree
- 12:52with you. I was. I was very surprised by it. But she
- 12:54was really good. Ali Alilah Ali La Brown, it is her name.
- 13:01She was fantastic, although I did learn something about about her, so I
- 13:07thought it was wild that they found a young actress that looked like Anya Taylor
- 13:13Joy because she has such distinct features, you know, like she's nothing sort
- 13:20of actress that you can really mix up with anybody. And was like,
- 13:22wow, it's so crazy they found someone who looks like her. That's wild.
- 13:26And she looks so much like her. No, No, she actually
- 13:31doesn't the actress, you know, it's it's her doing all the stuff.
- 13:35But they used AI imagery to like touch up her face to make it look
- 13:39more like Joy. Yeah, which I didn't realize that was something that we
- 13:45were doing these days. So well movie there, there we are. That's
- 13:50cool though, but I love the fact that we got so much backstory from
- 13:54when she was growing up, and it really like George Miller just does this
- 14:01great job with storytelling and making us see and believe like how resourceful furios is,
- 14:07Like all of those scenes with kid Furiosa, if you will like that,
- 14:16we're really really cool. And we just got a lot of detail on
- 14:20why, like she was able to survive after being kidnapped. Basically, it's
- 14:24because she was already resourceful and she was trained by you know, women warriors,
- 14:30and yeah, was able to like you know, figured out how to
- 14:35stay alive in one of those ways, was essentially acting like one of the
- 14:39boys once she got to the citadel, cutting her hair and not sitting you
- 14:46know, basically not talking. Awesome storytelling there by George Miller. And then
- 14:50yeah, super surprised again that we didn't get Onya Taylor Joy until the third
- 14:54act basically, and her first lines are badass. They're so good because like
- 15:01she's on screen, we see her for She's probably on screen for like twenty
- 15:05minutes before she actually even says her first lines, maybe longer because that scene
- 15:13where there the raiders are hijacking the war rig, that scene is like fifteen
- 15:18minutes long. That's the scene where she speaks her first lines. But there
- 15:24was like some scenes before that where she was on screen, so it might
- 15:26be like twenty plus minutes like before her actual first line when she shows up,
- 15:31which is crazy, and then she only has like thirty lines in the
- 15:33whole movie. But that scene also took like seventy eight days to film.
- 15:41Wow, that war rig scene where the raiders at the beginning with or an
- 15:46act three when Anya Taylor Joy is finally on screen, that fifteen minute scene
- 15:50took seventy eight days to film. Dude, I believe it. There's a
- 15:54lot of eight days. Seventy eight days and then two hundred stunt people.
- 16:00Yeah, fifteen minute action sequences apparently is like one of the the biggest ever.
- 16:06You can see it too. You know what's funny about that? In
- 16:10particular, like that that scene sticks out for like a lot of reasons,
- 16:12one because how long it is. Yeah, but the scene itself, Uh,
- 16:21it felt to me, it was like it reminded me a little bit
- 16:25of Fast and the Furious one where yeah, trying to steal from the semi
- 16:30right. It reminded me of that scene, and I was like, you
- 16:34know what, this is what they wanted that scene to be like in Fast
- 16:40and Furious, this is what they wanted it to be like, that's so
- 16:45funny. Yeah, and like twenty some odd years later, George Miller didn't,
- 16:49Yeah, the right way, right way. Yeah, that's amazing.
- 16:55I love that. Yeah, but that scene was so great. And I
- 16:57was reading reading too that Taylor joy and and George Miller would have conversations about
- 17:03that scene and he was explained to her why this the scene had to be
- 17:06this long and it and his answer was because the audience like needs to understand
- 17:12how resourceful Furiosa is and like and like in how smart and all that she
- 17:19is. And like that scene definitely does the trick like you you you it
- 17:25get He sets us up with kid furiosis, you know, introduction in the
- 17:30first part of the film, and then that war rig scene with Furiosa like
- 17:37brings home how smart and resourceful she is with like, you know, just
- 17:42everything about the war rig. And she obviously helped build the war rig too,
- 17:45so she knew a lot of things about it. So fantastic, unbelievable,
- 17:51like seventy eight days for one scene. Imagine that's insane. Yeah,
- 17:55I wonder, I wonder what the budget for that one scene was. I
- 17:57don't have that that that's a great question. Honestly, that's got to make
- 18:02some producer sweat out there. He's like, I don't even I don't care
- 18:04how much movie, how much money this movie makes. I don't want to
- 18:07think about how much money that scene costs. Yeah, I just don't want
- 18:11to think about it. That's what that is crazy seventy eight days man,
- 18:17and sorry, go ahead. I was gonna say the other thing though,
- 18:21like what's great about that scene is, like I said this, it's the
- 18:23it's the first lines that Furiosa says or is that like towards the very end
- 18:30of that scene, like you have this whole build up where you're watching her
- 18:33just be extremely resourceful and like a total badass and crawling underneath the war rig
- 18:37and then like taken out, taking out all these raiders and everything, and
- 18:41she's like one of the last last one standing, the last one's standing,
- 18:48and she's on top of the war rig, and they've got this like they
- 18:51call it the bounty Hunter. At the at the very end, that get
- 18:53the thing that twirls with like the spiked balls or whatever. Yeah, and
- 18:57and the war boy like the war boys like asking if you know he should
- 19:04turn it on and to this point, she still hasn't said any lines.
- 19:10She's been on the screen for like thirty minutes, and there's just this like
- 19:12tension and I'm just like, and the tension is so good that you yourself
- 19:18want to scream yes. And then her first lines are her screaming back to
- 19:22him the bounty Hunter, do the bounty Hunter now, which is like,
- 19:27I love because he just George Miller does such a good job and she did
- 19:33such a fantastic job of just bringing the tension, and you're just like,
- 19:36is she gonna speak at all? And then she's just yelling with you basically
- 19:38to turn this damn machine on so that they could like finish the battle and
- 19:42win. Yeah, the use of or the lack of lines speaking lines from
- 19:49from Furiosa was like, I thought, incredibly well done and a tailor.
- 19:55Joy did that like a fantastic She's just fantastic with thirty lines. I didn't
- 20:00feel like it didn't feel weird to me at all. So personally, I
- 20:06so one of the things I want to I want to address that, but
- 20:10to do it, I have to go bigger here. First. I enjoy
- 20:12this movie, even though I don't think I don't think I enjoyed it as
- 20:15much as Fury Fury Road. I think Fury Road like is ambitious in a
- 20:22very different way and covers a lot of ground. This movie is as far
- 20:26as like its characters go, Like, it feels like the story it's trying
- 20:30to tell is a lot simpler, right, this like quest for Revenge,
- 20:34And in doing so, it takes these two characters and you know, it
- 20:40pits them against each other, and you know, we're we're able to like
- 20:45examine them through that journey, right, And what I really enjoy about that
- 20:52is, like, you know, toward the end of this movie, we
- 20:56have Dementis like arguing like you know, the whole like hero villain thing,
- 21:00like we're not so different, you and me, Spider Man, you know,
- 21:03like always that, but they really are diametrically opposed in a lot of
- 21:11ways. You know, as you just pointed out, She's a really quiet
- 21:15character the way she's written. You know, she's very meticulous. She's always
- 21:19thinking about like down the road, whereas like Dementis is exactly the opposite.
- 21:25Right, He's a very smart character, but he's very short sighted, right.
- 21:30He thinks about like what's directly in front of him, and like had
- 21:33a problem solved, like right then and there. And like he's the opposite
- 21:36of a quiet character, right, Like you always know what he's thinking about.
- 21:38He's always talking. I love that they are polar opposites, right,
- 21:45But I guess in their quest for revenge, maybe they aren't so different,
- 21:48right, And I guess that's the point he tries to make at the end,
- 21:52which that scene at the end where they are just talking to each other,
- 21:55is probably my favorite scene in the entire movie. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 21:57that's so well done. They're both fantastic during that scene. Oh my
- 22:03gosh, I could watch that scene like one hundred times in a row.
- 22:06That was fantastic. Chris Hemsworth is a good bad guy. Yeah, a
- 22:11really really great, awful villain. Well. And I think this kind of
- 22:15villain, though, played to his strength a lot too, right, because
- 22:18he's also he's got like a lot of really good qualities from like a comedic
- 22:22perspective about him. And so this was a kind of villain that let him
- 22:27also be funny and like, I don't know, there's a lot of just
- 22:33him being himself in a way. It felt like just a little little loose
- 22:37he was just it was yeah, he was just he just did a wonderful
- 22:41job like being a bad joy. I enjoy that there is something familiar about
- 22:48the performance, right, Like there you can see Thor like in the performance,
- 22:52but it's not quite Thor, right right, Like they're like, you
- 22:57know, the the vanity is there, the bravado is there for Thor,
- 23:02and then of course the humor from Thor is there, but there's also this
- 23:04like there's this selfish disregard for the people around him, right yeah, and
- 23:14yeah, I mean very appropriately named, right, there's this dementedness to him.
- 23:18Yeah, yeah, yeah, I I love that. It's it's it's
- 23:29Thor, but just like sort of like askew. It's like it's Thor,
- 23:33but like there's something just off about him. You know. It was a
- 23:40good subtle difference that I thought he made, and I, like I said,
- 23:44I thought he was just a really compelling bad guy, especially the scene
- 23:47where they're escaping. Is it the bullet factory when when she and Jack are
- 23:52trying to escape the bullet factory and bullet farm? I think bullet farm,
- 23:56Yeah, the bullet farm, and and it you know, the gate is
- 24:02blocked by like a bunch of cars and like someone's like get the digga and
- 24:06he's like no, no time, and like just starts like bullheaded, like
- 24:10randing into it over and over again. The only thing that bothered me about
- 24:12that is they tried to do it with the Warwig earlier in the scene and
- 24:18it didn't work. And then they like Jack takes off and just decides to
- 24:22go through the plate the bullet farm and Firiosa goes like through the gate to
- 24:26help him. And then at the end when when Dementus just takes a another
- 24:33truck that's not like to me was not any more equipped to be able to
- 24:40take down a gate. Still, I had the same thought. But I
- 24:42think I think that truck we are led to believe after he plows through the
- 24:48game, I guess the gate is supposed to show us this actually when he
- 24:52does that. Later we see another feat of speed from this truck as it
- 24:57like goes up the hill right the dune and like no other bike can do
- 25:03it, and like it pulls off like a few like different feats of like
- 25:06crazy like strength and speed. Yeah, and you know, because of how
- 25:11big the tires were on that he was able to actually like get over the
- 25:12gate once he tore down, right, So that was the other thing I
- 25:15was thinking, And in the moment when I was watching it, I was
- 25:18like, ah, no, I feel that, but that's a small thing
- 25:23I have that actually happened to me a couple times in this movie. So
- 25:30overall, like I had a great time watching firios. I thought it was
- 25:33it was a really fun ride. But I think, I think maybe this
- 25:40is just a personal thing for me. Revenge stories, I feel like the
- 25:45story is always in the last like five minutes, and everything for the story,
- 25:49for the revenge story is the build up. I am thinking of another
- 25:55Anya Taylor Joy film that was a revenge story. She was not the in
- 26:00attraction of it though. The Northman again another revenge story where like the horrible
- 26:06thing happens in the beginning and then the character like goes through like the shit
- 26:11that like will make him like into the perfect monster that they'll be at the
- 26:15end to like pay off the revenge, right, And I don't know,
- 26:21I just feel like, as far as those stories go, like this didn't
- 26:25really deliver me anything different that I've seen, And as we pointed out before,
- 26:29it even does like the stereotypical of like we're not so different you and
- 26:33I, which, like, I am so tired of that conversation. Yeah,
- 26:37writers, yet your people to say something different. I'm sorry, like,
- 26:41no more, no more, We're not so different. We are,
- 26:45We're pretty different, we can be very different. I'm over it, you
- 26:49know. I mean, I'll give you that. You're making a good point
- 26:52about how that always in our revenge story seems to be the between the bad
- 26:59guy and the good guy, a good girl whatever, right, Like,
- 27:02there's always the we're not so different vibe, and it is overplayed. I
- 27:07think it was, like, yeah, I think it was delivered well here
- 27:11to where it is, you know, nothing against the actors. Yeah,
- 27:15but that's a great point. I will also say, it's tough in this
- 27:19kind of a world. It's tough to really say that anyone is good or
- 27:22bad, right because you know, granted, Furiosa comes from a place that,
- 27:29for all we know, seems like it's good, right, but it
- 27:33can't. But it's also secluded and they're trying to keep everyone out, so
- 27:38they're not one hundred percent good because they're also not trying to help, not
- 27:44that they could. With how Laurel Gray area we have, it's a pretty
- 27:48good argument granted, pretty good argument when you see what's out there, I
- 27:52don't know, no one wants their help. They would just take over.
- 27:55So it's kind of a catch twenty two situation on uh you know the gray
- 28:00area there, but no one's really the good guy or the good girl,
- 28:07right like Furiosa even has you know, by the time we get to the
- 28:11her getting revenged at the end, like she's done plenty of bad ship at
- 28:15that point, right she depending on who you are, like she's the bad
- 28:21the bad person of the film, right so, I mean, granted,
- 28:26I mean she tas she's not right, she's she's the badass and she's the
- 28:30the good the good side of the film. But in this kind of a
- 28:34world, it's hard to really guarantee who really is good or bad. Everyone's
- 28:40just out out for themselves. But that is a good point about coming up
- 28:45with something new regarding the vengeance story. You know, you know an example
- 28:53of a film like taking something that's been overdone, I like rewriting it,
- 28:57but like you know exactly what it is is that they're trying to say.
- 29:02So Captain America's Civil War, there's that scene between Tony Stark and Peter Barker
- 29:08and Tony's like, so, like what's your mo Like why do you do
- 29:12what you do? Like why do you get out of bed every day?
- 29:14What's what's your thing? And Peter's like, well, when you can do
- 29:18the things that I can do and then you don't and then the bad things
- 29:23happen, well, then that's not you. With great power comes great responsibility.
- 29:30Like we all know what it was that like they wanted him to say,
- 29:33but they're like, oh, we've all heard it a million times,
- 29:37let's not do it here, right, So like yeah, like there are
- 29:42ways around it, guys, Like you can do it without actually doing the
- 29:45cliche, you know. Yeah, And who knows, maybe I wouldn't have
- 29:49cared that much about the revenge story being like overdone had it not been for
- 29:55that line, you know, right that being said, Like I think,
- 30:00uh, I think as far as revenge stories go, I enjoyed the world
- 30:07building that we got out of this revenge stories, you know, like seeing
- 30:11the bullet farm, seeing gas town, uh, and like the way that
- 30:15like that their war was starting. I wish we got to see a little
- 30:18bit more of the war, but the way that started and then the way
- 30:22it ends awesome. So yeah, that that aspect of it. I really
- 30:30enjoyed some parts that I thought we're a little like lackluster, so preatory predatory
- 30:41and Jack cool name. By the way, the moment you see this guy,
- 30:47you're like, okay, well, like this is the love interest because
- 30:48this is the only handsome man in the entire world. There's it's just it's
- 30:57just a world of and then this one man, this one bastion of handsomeness.
- 31:04Yeah. Plus he's got the black the black paint on his forehead,
- 31:08which we all knew to be a furiosa thing from Fiery Road, And so
- 31:14you see that too, and you're like, Okay, this is about to
- 31:15be some kind of storyline because clearly this is where she gets her her war
- 31:22paint from. That is so funny. He's the only good looking man in
- 31:26the whole world. Of course, it is the love interest. Well point
- 31:32though, so there were two things about that though, So like A,
- 31:34he's handsome as hell, right uh, And then like b his name is
- 31:40uh, Preatorian Jack, which like to this point, other than like Immorton
- 31:45Joe, is like the coolest name we've gone so far, Like are you
- 31:48kidding me? Preatorian Jack, Like you're competing with rictus, erectus and scrotus,
- 31:56Like are you like no one stands a chance against the sky, Like
- 32:01he's perfect in this world and he's a good shooter and driver. What's he
- 32:07bad at? I guess, I guess living at the end. But like
- 32:09other than that, like girl, stand Alive, not very good at stand
- 32:17alive. That was heartbreaking. It's like you knew it wasn't gonna happen,
- 32:21because obviously we know how it ends. But what if. Man, they
- 32:25were so close, they were so close. Was there any part of you
- 32:30that I know, I know that it can't happen because of like the timeline,
- 32:35Was there any unreasonable part of you that was like, and this is
- 32:38when Max shows up to save the day? Well, I mean Max did
- 32:43show up. He does, he does, right, he does. I
- 32:47didn't think he were gonna see her in the credits he shows up, Yeah,
- 32:52but but he's he's there at the one shot where I think she's walking.
- 32:59Yeah, right, and then you they zoom out and they show him
- 33:02with his car. Yeah, I was at the top of the top of
- 33:06the dune. But it was the watching it wasn't it wasn't Tom Hardy.
- 33:09It was the guy who does who was a stunt double for mad Max Fiery
- 33:14Road, Jack Jackson, because I think he was on I think he was
- 33:21doing some stunts for this movie, for FiOS, for someone else or whatever,
- 33:25So he was already there and so they used him in that shot.
- 33:30That's pretty deep. So cool. Yeah, we got mad Max, you
- 33:32know, and then we shot we Charlie's they're on at the very end when
- 33:37they showed us. I think there were some actually they were old there was
- 33:40the very beginning of the old clips. Yes, it was just like the
- 33:44highlights. Yeah, there were actually Fury Road clips. Yeah, Fury I
- 33:49think. Yeah, but that was pretty neat. Yeah, but go ahead.
- 33:54So sorry, my actual point about Paratory and Jack, Sorry, I
- 33:59got I got off. He's so handsome, he's got off tangent. So
- 34:05after the war rig scene, which we agree amazing scene and probably one of
- 34:10the best in the whole movie, he's like, yeah, I need a
- 34:15new creom starting again. You know, stick with me. I'll teach you
- 34:19everything you need to know to get back to the place you need to get
- 34:22to right and then like we we get a fast forward through time and like
- 34:29she's got everything she needs at this point, and like we're we're getting up
- 34:34to like the war I'll be honest, I was a little disappointed that we
- 34:37weren't gonna get more of that, you know, Like I honestly could have
- 34:40done a little bit less of the war rig scene and gone into like not
- 34:46like a training montage, but just like them going on missions together, like
- 34:51at least one mission together, where like she doesn't know all the shit yet,
- 34:53right, and like we just see him teach her one thing, right,
- 34:58right. I don't think we actually ever see him teach her anything,
- 35:00do we? No, I don't think so. But I think this goes
- 35:04back to George Miller's point about why the word scene is so long to show
- 35:08us how resourceful she is already. So I think it's kind of one of
- 35:12those things where he didn't want to like then show her learning something because we're
- 35:16already supposed to imply that like she's just gonna absorb whatever information. And so
- 35:22it's probably true, but like I get what you're saying, It makes that
- 35:24that would have I would have enjoyed that too, maybe a little bit more
- 35:29about like help like flesh out their relationship, right, because like we go
- 35:32from that to like, oh they fucking like like like immediately, which like
- 35:39who could blame her? You know, like, yeah, it's the only
- 35:43handsome man in the world. Yeah, it truly is. Though. That's
- 35:47so funny, which Bye, by the way, meant to bring this up
- 35:52earlier another like, I don't know if it's an issue. It's something about
- 35:58the movie that I thought was going to come back and never it never actually
- 36:01does. So when I Morton Joe makes the deal with Dementis and he ends
- 36:07up taking Furiosa to like be his like eventual bride, which is gross.
- 36:17She escapes, right, but it's after she thwarts his son who like presumably
- 36:22is going to do something awful to her, right, and then like she
- 36:27just like disappears. Eventually she kind of wriggles her way back into like the
- 36:31situation I'm fine with, Like in Morton Joe like not recognizing her. I
- 36:36think that makes sense him not recognizing her, But like, is there really
- 36:39like not one scene where he's like, hey, where's that bargaining chip that
- 36:45like this whole deal was centered around. Is she still here? What do
- 36:50you mean she's gone? Yeah? Like how is there not one scene about
- 36:53that. Yeah, that that is a great point that you know she ran
- 36:59away, and especially because his son knows that she ran away and it was
- 37:04his fault, so there is no uproar. You would think there'd be an
- 37:08uproar about why she gone after this, after that whole thing. But also
- 37:15it might just be because he has so many wives or potential wives that it
- 37:20doesn't matter, right, But no, I agree with that that it doesn't
- 37:23matter probably in the end. Yeah, it shouldn't have been hard to put
- 37:27in a thirty second the what do you mean she's gone? You know,
- 37:30right fast forward to her cutting her hair and or she already did that,
- 37:35but fast forward to her like earning her way up up the ranks as a
- 37:39war boy. Basically, Yeah, that's a good point. Okay, one
- 37:46quick thing and then there's a bigger thing I definitely want to talk to you
- 37:50about, because I'm sure you also wait before you get to your big thing.
- 37:54Let's take a quick word from our sponsors, and we're back. Nick,
- 38:00you said you had a big thing. I have a small thing and
- 38:02then a big thing. Small thing of that big thing. The small thing
- 38:06is that I liked that we got to uh, we got to see the
- 38:08music, the guitar, the flaming music, guitar, stereo guy. Briefly,
- 38:14I was also very happy about that. I was waiting for him the
- 38:16whole time. I was like, please, please, is he here yet?
- 38:19Is he a part of the world yet? Please? And we got
- 38:22him. I like, yeah, that's like my favorite part of Fury Road.
- 38:25That guy. I just like, put just put that guy's scenes on
- 38:29a projector in a room. I'll just sit there for hours. It's hilarious.
- 38:32It's so funny, is so great. It's so ridiculous. The man's
- 38:36a mobile concert. It's so ridiculous. But that was cool to see we
- 38:39got that. And then the other thing is, I want to talk about
- 38:45History Man. Oh yeah, you mean Homeless Gandolf. Yes, that's what
- 38:52he was. He was he was Yeah, I said what I said,
- 38:55Homeless Gandalf. That's all. Oh my god, that's amazing. Sry your
- 39:05point, your point about it doesn't matter. Now my point doesn't matter.
- 39:09You've ruined everything about History Man. I thought his name was cool and everything.
- 39:14He just renamed homeless Gandal. Well, but the thing about History Man
- 39:21is he's actually very integral in the whole Mad Max world. So he's like,
- 39:25so the narrator, the narrator of the film. You know how we
- 39:30had a couple points where there was a narration that was that was history Man.
- 39:34Yes, that I did recognize. Yeah, and I guess George Miller
- 39:39says that like history Man and the narrating is part of Because the Mad Max
- 39:45story story or saga takes place over decades, you need like the his the
- 39:52those stories are passed through generations from the history man of the worlds at the
- 39:59time or whatever. So that's like, I guess the reason for having even
- 40:02the character at all and then also having him like narrate is how like this
- 40:10world essentially passes along stories is with the history men of the generations basically because
- 40:17there's no you know, social media or electronics basically in this apocalyptic world.
- 40:22So I thought that was cool, but not as cool as I thought.
- 40:27After hearing the homeless Scandalf, dude, I just couldn't. I couldn't done
- 40:34see it man, Like it was it was the cloak that he was wearing.
- 40:37I was like, yeah, dude, he's just well Martandal. I
- 40:40will say he did have this one line towards the end too, when when
- 40:44Furiosa brings this like rinky dink car to the war and then they take her
- 40:51tire and then she steals the car that they put the tire on, and
- 40:54she that's when she she goes and finds a dementis by herself to at the
- 40:59end of the But as she drives away, history man just like straight up
- 41:05like zoomed in camera right on him, and then he's just like, it's
- 41:07the fifth Rider of the Apocalypse. And that was so funny. I don't
- 41:14think I don't think it was. I totally agree with you, I because
- 41:19it was so it was so overly dramatic. Yeah, because like because like
- 41:24if if the camera wasn't on him, and like it was just his disembodied
- 41:29voice and like her writing off the distance and him and like you hear like
- 41:31the fifth Rider of the Apocalypse, right, Like that would be really cool.
- 41:36But it's the fact that you see him say it next to all of
- 41:38these like garbage looking people and like he's like the most eloquent sounding one.
- 41:43He's so out of place, yeah, and like he has no reason a
- 41:46to know who's even driving the car, and like b to say this to
- 41:52be like in awe of it, like he should be like, oh shit,
- 41:54like right they she took the car, like if if like they knew
- 42:00that she in the first place, they know who took it, which I'm
- 42:01pretty sure they don't. Yeah. No, that scene was funny. Yeah,
- 42:07that was funny for sure. It's like he was right. It was
- 42:10like he was holding on to it. Yeah, like he was writing it
- 42:15like a week later after telling a story on paper or something. You know,
- 42:17it's like, what would I what should I say in this moment?
- 42:21Oh, it's the fifth writer of the And then I was like, oh,
- 42:23she's totally the fifth writer of the Apocalypse. Yeah, I'm so glad.
- 42:30I'm so glad you noticed that too, because that was I had to
- 42:32write that down. I was like, this is hilarious. It was.
- 42:37It was the most immersion breaking scene of the movie for me. When he
- 42:42when he said, I was like, that's so stupid. I love that.
- 42:45That just oh one other thing that I thought was kind of not dumb,
- 42:51but it bothered me throughout the film. What's what the constellations on her
- 42:54arm that she she drew herself and then this father got him. Yeah,
- 43:00they didn't set anything up constellation wise, really right, I mean, ever,
- 43:05at the very beginning, her mother says something about like follow the stars
- 43:09or or something, but it wasn't enough to warrant her like constantly looking at
- 43:16her tattoo to find her way back home because she honestly didn't even know where
- 43:21anyway. Right, You think she knew what direction to go regardless, right,
- 43:24or she had a vague idea, but like and if you know what,
- 43:29if you know it well enough to draw it on your arm, then
- 43:31like you don't need an illustrative reminder, right, unless it's like it's more
- 43:37it's more poignant and emotional and she just wants to remember home. Yeah,
- 43:40right, Like if it's that, okay, cool, But there's no indication
- 43:44that it's that, you know, right, I mean it's probably partly that,
- 43:46but it just felt it felt like something we didn't really need. Yeah,
- 43:51I agree, I mean if anything, like I can only think of
- 43:54one thing for this, and like, if I'm Miller, which I'm clear
- 44:00not, but but if I was, if I was, You're going into
- 44:06this movie this is actually okay, So I'll give him this. This is
- 44:10creative. So the problem with prequels is it is hard to build steaks in
- 44:20a prequel because you already know what's going to happen, right, Like,
- 44:24even without having watched the film, you know two things. You know,
- 44:29Immorton Joe is going to be fine, you know it all right, I
- 44:30guess you know a few things. You know, his sons are going to
- 44:32be fine. You know, Furiosa is going to be fine. You know
- 44:36Dementis is probably not going to be fine, right, and his gang right,
- 44:42So like you know all those things, and like that's what the conflict
- 44:45is like generating around. So like how you get around that usually is you
- 44:50know, you you built in emotional steaks in a way that maybe the viewer
- 44:57cannot see coming, right, like building up like an emotional context to something
- 45:02that the viewer couldn't have possibly have known beforehand. And the star thing is
- 45:08one way to do that. I don't think that this hits, but I
- 45:10think that this is what he might have been going for. So we know
- 45:14that furios is gonna lose her arm at some point in the movie, right,
- 45:17and then in the beginning she draws like the stars on her arm,
- 45:22and if we're right, if it's supposed to be more of an emotional thing,
- 45:24a reminder of home than her losing her arm. I mean, like,
- 45:30I feel like you don't have to build too much of an emotional context
- 45:32to lose your arm. You've lost your arm. That's pretty emotionally devastating in
- 45:37and of itself. But if it's supposed to be a reminder of home,
- 45:42I could see that being a very clever bit of writing. Again, I
- 45:45don't think it if it's supposed to be that, I don't think it hits
- 45:49really at all. Yeah, but principle, I didn't even realize at the
- 45:54end after she loses her arm that the drawings were on the arm that she
- 45:58lost. Yeah, kind of like maybe even boilers for me to be complaining
- 46:01about because you doesn't even have the arm anymore anyway. Well no, because
- 46:04well, like to your point you said, like what was the point of
- 46:07that? Yeah, yeah, because like it doesn't really add up to anything
- 46:09except being lost. Yeah. And I also I love that George made sure
- 46:15not to give us the arm ripping off scene until like muchs later, because
- 46:21we didn't know how, but you knew it was gonna happen at some points,
- 46:22like Okay, we're going to figure out, like this is how did
- 46:24she lose her arm? We're gonna find out in this movie, and I
- 46:28felt like there were a lot of moments it could have happened, and I'm
- 46:30like, okay, this is it. It happened like four times, like
- 46:32oh this is this is the moment for sure. Nope, this is it.
- 46:36Nope. Yeah, like this is the word scene. Yeah, there's
- 46:37one one moment. Yeah. And then she gets her arm stuck and you're
- 46:42like, okay, like her arm shed They're gonna have to, like she'll
- 46:46lose that part of her arm because the wound is too bad. Right.
- 46:51But then that wasn't completely it because then they tied her up by the arm,
- 46:53and the second her arm goes up on the tie, you're like,
- 46:55oh god, because you see the bone sticking out. You're just like,
- 47:00oh, okay, so this is gonna snap eventually. And then and then
- 47:06that was a really cool scene. Obviously this is when Jack dies, which
- 47:08you know, that's super sad when the best looking character in the film,
- 47:14excuse me, aside from Curiosa although furios is not necessarily hot, Anya Taylor
- 47:22Joy is, but when she's playing Furios and maybe not the whole time anyway,
- 47:29dig yourself out of this. Yea, we wish Jack was still with
- 47:34us. But that seems really cool because she again shows her resourcefulness and after
- 47:42they have you know, like gotten this like sand tornado like spun up by
- 47:47just going in circles and dragging Jack around and just like making all this commotion.
- 47:52She's under the cover of all this desert and they they're not paying attention
- 47:57to her at that moment, and she she probably detaches the rest of her
- 48:01arm herself, of course, and takes off and is able to able to
- 48:08get away, which is just like another resourceful moment, really cool and brutal.
- 48:15Jesus. I do love that she is ultimately responsible for cutting off her
- 48:22own arm, right, like obviously, like stuff happens to her and that
- 48:25forces her to do it, but like it's not like someone took her arm,
- 48:28like she decided I'm getting out of here, you know, ye,
- 48:32very on brand. Yeah, And then for the character, the resourcefulness to
- 48:37like build herself another arm which is gasoline powered, right, is so cool?
- 48:43Like what this is amazing, like very very cool. I love that.
- 48:50Yeah. And then I think I have like one or two more things,
- 48:53including a something you might not know about the film, but I'm wondering
- 48:57if you have anything else you wanted to talk about before I bring that I
- 48:59do, actually, and it's about that scene. So Simon Dugan is the
- 49:06cinematographer for this movie, and he's done a bunch of stuff before, to
- 49:10my favorites being I Robot and The Great Gatsby. That one in particular is
- 49:17beautifully shot. I think that's probably his at least that's my favorite thing that
- 49:22he's shot. Can I just pause real quick? Sure? So those I
- 49:27Robot, The Great Gatsby, and Furiosa. Yeah, that's a trifecta for
- 49:31a cinematographer. Pretty good. What a random ass three movies the name.
- 49:37Obviously he's done many other things, Yes, yes, Like there's got to
- 49:43be like three other movies he's done to mention instead of I Robot, Like
- 49:45what wait, hold on, hold on, are we anti I Robot here?
- 49:50I'm not anti EE Robot. I just I haven't seen it in like
- 49:53fifteen years, and it just seems like such a random movie to mention at
- 49:57the moment. I have to go look at this guys all right discography now,
- 50:01because I feel like there's like another movie you might have mentioned instead of
- 50:05I Robot, Like when I when I went to take a look I'm pretty
- 50:08sure those are the two biggest that he's responsible for. Okay, all right,
- 50:12never mind, so he didn't do he was, don't get me wrong.
- 50:15There are other notable films. I'm pretty sure those are the two they
- 50:19released my two favorites. Okay, So random that I Robot was so random
- 50:23to me to talk about I Robot more later. I get the randomness now
- 50:28that you like mention it, But like, yo, I Robot rules.
- 50:31I might watch it tomorrow night. Actually, because now we're talking about you,
- 50:35we'll talk about it afterwards. Kay, I'm gonna watch it tomorrow night.
- 50:37So we're gonna review I Robot next week. Let's do it. I
- 50:40love My Robot. It's such a fun movie. Alright. Well, I
- 50:45just got myself into something I probably don't actually want to do, but here
- 50:49we go. All right, So, but he wasn't a cinematographer for Furiy
- 50:52Road that I assume. I mean, Fury Road was like twenty fifteen.
- 50:57He was not there. But anyway, sorry, yeah, So, so
- 51:00Simon Simon Dugan shoots this movie. It's it's a beautiful movie. There are
- 51:06so many different I you know, after watching this in Dune, I'm wondering,
- 51:10like is it just a cheat code to like shoot in the desert?
- 51:14Can you just like create beautiful images like that easily? I know it's not
- 51:17I know they have talent, but like, damn do they make it look
- 51:20effortless? It's really good. The scene you just mentioned, though, has
- 51:23my my favorite shot of the entire movie, and I just love how like
- 51:29creative it is. I think, like usually I'm not a big fan of
- 51:35fade faded transitions, you know, like when when one scene like fades into
- 51:40another, Like they're fine and like they're effective, but like they never usually
- 51:45stick with me, and they're not supposed to write. They're supposed to be
- 51:49seamless, right, Like you just go to one scene transition to the next,
- 51:52right, Like we keep it moving. It's not supposed to take you
- 51:54out of the film. It's literally supposed to like skate by you. Right.
- 52:01There's a shot here though, where they got really creative with that faded
- 52:05transition where Dementus says, like you know, like he says whatever he says,
- 52:12and like the bikers like start going in circles, right, but like
- 52:16the camera's lingering on his face like while he's doing that, and it transitions
- 52:22to a wide shot of the bikers going in circles around the encampment that they've
- 52:29created, but there's still like fifty percent opacity of Dementus's face, so like
- 52:36it looks like you're getting this like inside look of what it's like to be
- 52:40inside Dementus's head with all these bikes just circling around and all like the sand
- 52:45and the twister like going around, like it looks insane. It looks like
- 52:50he's insane, and just like, yeah, just like visually, like what
- 52:54a great way to communicate, like, where the hell this character is right
- 52:58now? An angry crazy person. Yeah, And he was having a moment
- 53:04too there while he was wh they were all going wild. That was.
- 53:06That was a moment that he was having internally, Yeah, that was.
- 53:09I think that was like one of his most emotionally unstable moments. Like I
- 53:14was legitimately scared of him in that moment. I was like, oh man,
- 53:17yeah, so yeah, Chef's GISs to that. Here's something that you
- 53:22might not know about Furiosa, or rather something you might not have noticed upon
- 53:30first watch of the film, and it has to do with, uh,
- 53:37two smaller characters in the movie okay that you you know, just very in
- 53:44passing Chris Hemsworth, Chris Hemsworth's wife, Elsa pat Pet Paddocky, Pet Pattacky.
- 53:52I'm not sure how you say her last name, but Elsa actually plays
- 53:58two characters in this film. She plays She plays one of the women from
- 54:05the Green Place at the very beginning, which is very obvious. You see
- 54:07her at the very beginning of the film, and she's a I think she's
- 54:12she's like some sort of general at the Green Place and furios Is. She's
- 54:16the one who goes after the raiders with Furiosa's mother, and then Furios's mother
- 54:22continues the journey on her own, and so that's her first appearance. And
- 54:27then in the next chapter when we meet Dementus, or actually I think we
- 54:32still meet I think we meet Dementus in chapter one as well, but in
- 54:35the next chapter, in chapter two is this scene was the most gruesome to
- 54:42me in probably the whole film. And in chapter two when Dementus is like
- 54:47just like him and his crew just conquered some other crew or whatever, and
- 54:52there there's only a certain amount of spots on Dementus's biker gang and you have
- 54:58to fight to win or whatever, and so that you have to fight each
- 55:02other to get a spot on a bike, and then you have to and
- 55:07then there's like five or six bikes that are tied to this person who's in
- 55:12the center, and they're all going to hit the gas pedal and just rip
- 55:16this guy's limbs off. Disgusting, absolutely disgusting. But Elsa her the other
- 55:24character she plays, and she plays this character for the rest of the film.
- 55:28I think that character's name is actually mister Norton, if I ever looked
- 55:30it up correctly. So funny. But and you see this really quickly.
- 55:35She is a part of the game that the people have to fight to get
- 55:38a spot on one of the bikes to then rip this guy's limbs off.
- 55:43She's the lastest one, she's like the last one that gets on. But
- 55:45she gets her face like just destroyed. So she's got this disgusting deformity for
- 55:51the whole film on her face, so you can't really tell it's her,
- 55:57But that's her other character, right, So that's the other character, which
- 56:00is why she's able to play two characters, because she plays like a deformed,
- 56:02a deformed biker gang member for damentus, I love that. And she
- 56:08gets another close up one time at the very end, because like they did
- 56:13a good job of like not showing her like a close up or anything.
- 56:16I mostly see, probably because I remembered her messed up mouth. Yeah,
- 56:20at the very end, they do a close up of her, and I
- 56:22imagine at that point it was spaced out enough to where people weren't bothered.
- 56:27But at the beginning of the film, I noticed her and I was like,
- 56:30I'm pretty sure that's his wife playing a second part, and then it
- 56:35I was the whole film. I was like trying to like get a good
- 56:37shot of her, and they didn't do it again until the very end,
- 56:39probably to hope the audience wouldn't realize it or something, but I did.
- 56:45You didn't fool me, George anyway. I thought that was like a fun
- 56:51fact and that was pretty cool. No, that's that's sick. I like
- 56:54that. That's a that's a good Easter egg hunting. Yeah yeah, yeah,
- 57:00yeah yeah, yeah, so shall be great. Let's do some grades.
- 57:07Man. I loved Let's maybe you want to see I wanted to rewatch
- 57:10Fury Road again even though I just watched it last week. I was like,
- 57:14man, I really want to watch Furio now because like you just have
- 57:15this whole extra backstory on why Furios is the way that she is. So
- 57:21it's cool. You know, this movie actually made me wonder, Like,
- 57:24so, I guess quick side note before we grade this movie, but like
- 57:31so, Fury Road is like pretty famous for being stuck in like development hell
- 57:37for a long time, right, Like I think I think George has like
- 57:39the idea for Fury Road, like back in like nineteen eighty seven. Yeah,
- 57:44and I think you're right, yeah, and like he can't get it
- 57:47off the ground. I think there's problems when like nine to eleven shows up,
- 57:52and then I think that the whole project gets side railed for a while.
- 57:58But anyway, the reason why bring that up? This movie made me
- 58:02wonder, like how much of Furios's like backstory was originally supposed to be part
- 58:10of Fury Road. You know, so originally he wanted to film They were
- 58:17supposed to film them both, I think at the same time, AHH supposed
- 58:22to come out back to back, and then when they started pre production for
- 58:25both for for Fury for both of them, they really they decided to just
- 58:31do Fury Road the first time. So it wasn't until pre production because I
- 58:37think going into pre production, they're like, we're gonna do two movies back
- 58:38to back. We have a plan, and then they started pre production they're
- 58:42like, holy shit, there's no looking way because if you think about both
- 58:46movies, you're like, yeah, no shit, you can't do both back
- 58:49to back. Like it took them forth. It took him seventy eight days
- 58:52for war rigscene, Like they're not filming movies. It makes sense when you
- 58:55think about it, Like when you think about this film, like there's just
- 58:59so many parts of it that feel like that maybe they should have been in
- 59:05Fury in Fury Road, like like the very beginning with like the green plays.
- 59:08You know, yeah, is a strong word that they could have been
- 59:13in Furi like the beginning with the green plays for context. Yeah, yeah,
- 59:16exactly like that. That feels like that absolutely could have been in the
- 59:21original movie, in the last movie. Right, but yeah, that makes
- 59:27sense sense, Yeah, it makes sense. Yeah. Now it's it is
- 59:30complete. Now you can you can complete watch Furios and go right into right
- 59:35into this and and another another fun fact, too real quick, Charlie's stare
- 59:40on was not Obviously, she did not reprise her role as as Furio said
- 59:45in this film, because George Miller didn't want to use Ai to like dage
- 59:51her basically, and he decided he'd rather recast, which Charlie's was apparently a
- 59:57little bit bummed about but understood. At least that's the quote I saw.
- 1:00:01Who knows she might still be pissed. But that does make me though,
- 1:00:06like, how how many more movies can Anya Taylor Joy play a ting a
- 1:00:12teen in? Like so she she was a teen in New Mutants as well,
- 1:00:20but like she's like, I'm pretty sure she's on the other side of
- 1:00:22twenty five. I mean it was like she looks young. She does look
- 1:00:29young, she does, so maybe she's got a couple more teen movies in
- 1:00:32her before before it's all over. I like that though, the recasting,
- 1:00:37especially because it's been sady jam since since Fury Road, and I think it
- 1:00:40it it would be I definitely want to rewatch Fury Road now that I've seen
- 1:00:46this and just just to like, you know, see how it goes but
- 1:00:51right, and nothing to like knock the original performance. But I don't think
- 1:00:54like, at least at in twenty fifteen, I don't think Furiosa was like
- 1:01:00iconic enough of a character to not have another actress come in and play her,
- 1:01:07you know, like like it's not like Indiana Jones one came out and
- 1:01:12then Indiana Jones two and like you didn't have Harrison Ford right right, right
- 1:01:16right, yeah, like Furiosa is Charlie's there on, but like now she's
- 1:01:22also Anya Taylor Joy, right. They both crushed it. Oh yeah,
- 1:01:28And I think that Anya Taylor Joy did a really good job of uh kind
- 1:01:34of picking up some mannerisms that Charlie's would have used in Fury Roads. So
- 1:01:37like, I actually think watching them back to back would be like seamless because
- 1:01:42they both did such a good job and I think they they blended it perfectly.
- 1:01:46So yeah, anyway, kudos to them. Fantastic performance. Let's score
- 1:01:52it all right, let's do it. I'm giving it a three. Serious,
- 1:02:00Yeah, I'm giving it a three, even like you were just like
- 1:02:01it's a three. Good night, see, I've given it a three.
- 1:02:08Here's the thing. I I enjoyed the heck out of this movie. I
- 1:02:12really had a fun time with it. I stay by what I said earlier.
- 1:02:15I think prequels really do have a hard time creating something that's like not
- 1:02:22an artificial, artificial conflict, right, like you kind of know where everything's
- 1:02:27going. Revenge stories are overly simple to the point of like again, you
- 1:02:31know where it's going. So it's got both of those things working against it.
- 1:02:36There was one other thing that bothered me about it. I can't recall
- 1:02:39what it was. But anyway, overall, it's not enough for me to
- 1:02:44say this movie is bad. By no means is it bad. It's a
- 1:02:46good movie anything. People see it in theaters. Absolutely absolutely for the warwhig
- 1:02:53scene alone, go seed in theaters. I definitely got a seed in theaters.
- 1:02:58One hundred percent worth going worth going to twice in theaters. In my
- 1:03:01opinion, I love this movie. George Miller crushed it, as you mentioned,
- 1:03:06signed with cinematography fantastic, Annie Taylor Joy amazing, Chris Hamsworth amazing.
- 1:03:13It took seventy eight days to film a damn fifteen minutes scene action scene,
- 1:03:16Like you have to go see this in theaters. It's fantastic. I'm giving
- 1:03:20it a four point two. It's it's great. It's a really solid score,
- 1:03:25way higher than Joe. Although I see where Joe came from, I
- 1:03:29do understand his points. But I think that the the origin story of Furios
- 1:03:37is like it's super well done. So four point two that's a review.
- 1:03:43That's a review. Next time we are we're doing a TV show next time,
- 1:03:49right, Like, what's what's the next act? Lie? Oh man?
- 1:03:52Nick, We're doing a Star Wars thing next, oh man? And
- 1:03:54do you think I think the act lite will have a desert in it.
- 1:04:00I think it's got a heavy desert. It's got it right, It's got
- 1:04:03twenty four, the Year of the Desert. Let you go. Yeah,
- 1:04:09apparently some people have seen the first couple of episodes already, just like a
- 1:04:12sneak peek, and it's like, apparently really awesome. So I'm stoked for
- 1:04:15this, super stoked. So we're talking about Acolyte next for sure, that's
- 1:04:19in. That's in about ten days. Okay, something get excited about.
- 1:04:25Yeah, hecky, Star Wars Baby, finally Wars Baby. We're back.
- 1:04:29We're back baby, let's go. But until then, made the review be with you
