- 0:11Speaker 1: Welcome to Girls Gone Hallmark, a Hallmark review podcast. I'm
- 0:13Speaker 1: Megan and I'm a longtime Hallmark fan. I'm Wendy. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: a former Hallmark hater. On today's episode, we are discussing
- 0:20Speaker 1: The Way Home Season four, episode two, which originally aired
- 0:25Speaker 1: on the Hallmark Channel on Sunday, April twenty sixth, and
- 0:28Speaker 1: is currently available to stream on Hallmark Plus. One of
- 0:32Speaker 1: our favorite parts about making these episodes of the Way
- 0:34Speaker 1: Home are our listener mailbag episodes that we get to
- 0:37Speaker 1: make following the episodes, and those are only possible because
- 0:40Speaker 1: of listeners like you can you tell? I've been watching
- 0:43Speaker 1: a lot of PBS with my listeners like you tagline
- 0:47Speaker 1: yeah I can btw. I was watching something the other
- 0:52Speaker 1: day and Alan Coming came on at the end to
- 0:55Speaker 1: promote he was doing the PBS push. I was like, Alan,
- 0:59Speaker 1: may do, I don't know who that is? Yes, you
- 1:02Speaker 1: do the Traders that's his name. I'm sure, yes, Oh
- 1:05Speaker 1: you're right, Okay, what are you doing here? He's an hector,
- 1:09Speaker 1: I know, I'm aware. I just don't see him outside
- 1:12Speaker 1: of his Scotland habitat much these days. Was he all
- 1:15Speaker 1: like Traders up? You know what? I mean like, uh,
- 1:18Speaker 1: he was not. No, oh he looks nice. To participate
- 1:21Speaker 1: in a listener mailbag episode, email us your thoughts, your theories,
- 1:24Speaker 1: your questions to Hello at Girls Gonehllmark dot com, or
- 1:28Speaker 1: leave us a voicemail nine four nine three two nine
- 1:31Speaker 1: eight zero nine zero with your thoughts on these episodes.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Let's kick off our discussion of Blinded by the Light
- 1:39Speaker 1: episode two with a synopsis. When Kat finds herself in
- 1:43Speaker 1: a new era of port Haven history, new mysteries unfold. Meanwhile,
- 1:48Speaker 1: Alice revisits a familiar time and Dell tries to help Elliott.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Bianca Melchior plays young fer and Landry. Beyonca's previous work
- 1:56Speaker 1: includes a Very Jonas Christmas movie and Shmigadoon, but mosts
- 2:00Speaker 1: as a dancer. This is just her fifteenth acting credit.
- 2:03Speaker 1: Dan Janett joins as Cliff, the Temperance Inspector. We all
- 2:07Speaker 1: know Dan from his other Hallmark roles, including the recent
- 2:10Speaker 1: to a royal setting opposite Jen Lilly. Gabriel Hogan aka
- 2:14Speaker 1: Norman from the Hannah Swinson franchise joins the cast as
- 2:17Speaker 1: Grayson Goodwin. Let's jump right into this episode with the
- 2:22Speaker 1: first impression. My first impression is Cat in nineteen twenty
- 2:27Speaker 1: five is giving Betty Boop and I cannot unsee it.
- 2:31Speaker 1: The lipstick and the eyebrows, oh, hair style, everything, And
- 2:36Speaker 1: in fact, I had to google and Betty Boop. You know,
- 2:39Speaker 1: please Betty Boop historians don't come for me. It was
- 2:42Speaker 1: a quick google last night while I was watching this.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Betty Boop wasn't popular until like nineteen thirty five, So
- 2:51Speaker 1: maybe Cat inspired. Maybe maybe my first impression is Wendy.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I dare you to come for Elliott after this episode?
- 3:03Speaker 1: Oh interesting, I have a lot of thoughts about that.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Can we talk about Elliott for a second? And my
- 3:09Speaker 1: thoughts on Elliott? Sure? You know I think I feel
- 3:14Speaker 1: a little bit bad about my hot takes on him
- 3:16Speaker 1: last week. You know, I was clowning on him a
- 3:19Speaker 1: little bit, and it's been sitting with me all week long,
- 3:23Speaker 1: plus Francisco's email. I am not a cold hearted woman, No,
- 3:29Speaker 1: I have empathy for this character. And I can see
- 3:33Speaker 1: someone who who's maybe parent hasn't been around their entire life,
- 3:38Speaker 1: can feel abandoned and still torn up about it as
- 3:42Speaker 1: an adult. So that's all I gonna say. I'm just
- 3:44Speaker 1: you know, I poke fun at these things because it's
- 3:46Speaker 1: my job. But also, you know, I like Elliott. I
- 3:49Speaker 1: like Elliott and I feel for him, so well, we're
- 3:53Speaker 1: going to run down the main plot points in this episode.
- 3:57Speaker 1: I feel like last episode was a fire hose of information,
- 4:01Speaker 1: and I know that other viewers felt the same way.
- 4:04Speaker 1: They felt a little bit lost and confused in what's
- 4:06Speaker 1: going on? And this is too much to take in.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Did you feel like the pace eased up a little
- 4:12Speaker 1: bit in this episode? No, not so interesting. I this
- 4:16Speaker 1: episode felt packed to me, it worked, truthfully. I watched
- 4:21Speaker 1: the episode twice. I watched it one one time for enjoyment,
- 4:24Speaker 1: and then I watch it a second time to write
- 4:27Speaker 1: all the notes down, and I just thought it was
- 4:30Speaker 1: just jam packed, but also not a ton happened. Yes,
- 4:35Speaker 1: it's a lot of setup, yeah exactly. But I some
- 4:41Speaker 1: things that stood out to me is I thought the
- 4:44Speaker 1: structure of the episode did something really interesting, the mirroring
- 4:49Speaker 1: of like nineteen twenty five, in nineteen seventy six, same
- 4:52Speaker 1: kind of things reoccur. Right, Yeah, I thought it was
- 4:57Speaker 1: very packed though still, and maybe that's because I was
- 5:00Speaker 1: like taking notes, like you should see my notes. Oh yes,
- 5:05Speaker 1: I know, it's I have to scroll and scroll and
- 5:07Speaker 1: scroll as the online yes only kid. I mean a
- 5:10Speaker 1: forty five minute episode took me I think two hours
- 5:13Speaker 1: to watch as I was like, Pops, yeah this down, pause,
- 5:15Speaker 1: write this down. So yeah, same, And I think the
- 5:18Speaker 1: parallel structure as a viewer is really nice, but in
- 5:21Speaker 1: trying to parse all the details, it does cause you
- 5:24Speaker 1: it does take some time. Yeah, what are your overall thoughts?
- 5:28Speaker 1: You know, I felt like we focus a little bit more.
- 5:32Speaker 1: I agree with you that we don't get a lot
- 5:33Speaker 1: of answers. We're still in a setup phase. We're setting
- 5:36Speaker 1: up nineteen twenty five, We're setting up nineteen seventy six.
- 5:39Speaker 1: Both Kat and Alice are on a little bit of
- 5:42Speaker 1: a separate quest. We are moving towards some closure about
- 5:47Speaker 1: some secrets Dell has been keeping, but we don't quite
- 5:51Speaker 1: get there. But I felt like we're focused on three
- 5:56Speaker 1: main storylines here and as opposed to trying to tackle
- 6:01Speaker 1: every single thing and episode one. So this series has
- 6:06Speaker 1: always been, especially in the later seasons, kind of jam
- 6:10Speaker 1: packed with information as we're trying to unravel these mysteries.
- 6:14Speaker 1: But I thought this was a little bit easier to
- 6:17Speaker 1: take than Episode one. Should we start with the Dell
- 6:21Speaker 1: and Elliott of it all. Yeah. Please, Also, I want
- 6:25Speaker 1: to I want for you to explain to me and
- 6:28Speaker 1: the listeners why you dare me to come for Elliott
- 6:30Speaker 1: in this episode. I'm curious what your take is. Okay, Well,
- 6:34Speaker 1: that will reveal itself as we discuss. I think my
- 6:37Speaker 1: notes say, Dell and Elliott becoming family is how I've
- 6:41Speaker 1: titled this particular segment. Dell. In my opinion, we are
- 6:46Speaker 1: finally seeing a lot of growth from her, finally in
- 6:51Speaker 1: season four. I mean, they just made her stuck in
- 6:55Speaker 1: grief and bitterness for so long that I feel like
- 7:01Speaker 1: it is nice to see her moving forward. Do you agree? Oh? Good,
- 7:07Speaker 1: I do agree. Yeah, there is a definite change in
- 7:10Speaker 1: direction with her in terms of softening, and you're right,
- 7:15Speaker 1: like somewhere along the line and maybe with the time
- 7:20Speaker 1: what she learned in the time traveling last season kind
- 7:23Speaker 1: of close, you know, closing that door for her, and
- 7:27Speaker 1: she is able to operate in kind of a I
- 7:31Speaker 1: don't I don't want to continue to call her soft,
- 7:33Speaker 1: but like she's operating from like a different point of
- 7:35Speaker 1: view now. Yeah, she's warmer, she's more open. Elliott is
- 7:41Speaker 1: processing the fact that his mom left him behind, and
- 7:44Speaker 1: while we have the understanding that it all turns out okay,
- 7:48Speaker 1: obviously someone finds him on the banks of the pond.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Because he's here now, he's still very much in the moment.
- 7:54Speaker 1: He can't really let go of my mom abandoned me,
- 7:56Speaker 1: and he and Delle being left behind by Kat and Alice.
- 8:00Speaker 1: In this episode, it gives Dell a chance to step
- 8:04Speaker 1: into that maternal role for him and fills a hole,
- 8:10Speaker 1: and a lot of things that I think had previously
- 8:13Speaker 1: been unsaid are said by Dell in this episode. She
- 8:20Speaker 1: tells him they are in the barn, and she tells him,
- 8:22Speaker 1: you know, Colton built this for you, and he tells
- 8:26Speaker 1: her about his five more minutes that he had with Colton,
- 8:30Speaker 1: and we get Jefferson Brown back in this episode. I
- 8:33Speaker 1: really loved. I think my favorite scene is when Dell
- 8:37Speaker 1: in the bar says to Elliott, when you were left
- 8:40Speaker 1: on our doorstep, I wanted to be your mom. I
- 8:43Speaker 1: wanted to keep you. I didn't want to have to
- 8:45Speaker 1: send you back to VIC. But you've always been an
- 8:48Speaker 1: honorary landry. I've always wanted to be your mom. I
- 8:50Speaker 1: feel like I'm your mom now. I thought it was
- 8:52Speaker 1: a nice and touching moment and warmth that we haven't
- 8:55Speaker 1: gotten to see from Dell in three seasons previously. Well,
- 9:00Speaker 1: and she definitely sees Elliott's needs, yes, in this episode, right,
- 9:04Speaker 1: Like she can tell that he's struggling several times through
- 9:08Speaker 1: the episode and she tells him what he needs to hear.
- 9:12Speaker 1: Not that I don't think it's disingenuous. I think she
- 9:15Speaker 1: does believe, like you know, I'm meant to be your
- 9:17Speaker 1: not I'm meant to be your mom, but like I
- 9:19Speaker 1: wanted to be your mom, I am your honorary mom
- 9:22Speaker 1: now whatever. But I couldn't help but think through this,
- 9:24Speaker 1: Like I'm trying to piece the timeline together in my head.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Colton was always there for Elliott, right, and then Colton's
- 9:33Speaker 1: death comes. I have to assume that Dell kind of
- 9:36Speaker 1: was always there for Elliott too prior to Colton's death. Now,
- 9:39Speaker 1: is there a period of time after Colton's death that
- 9:42Speaker 1: she was so stuck in the grief muck that she
- 9:45Speaker 1: couldn't continue to be there as an honorary mom to Elliott? Like,
- 9:49Speaker 1: is that the area that she's struggling with that she
- 9:52Speaker 1: couldn't help him? Because she did the Landrys helped him
- 9:55Speaker 1: throughout his young adult life. So I'm a little bit
- 9:59Speaker 1: conf fused on like if she's giving herself a hard
- 10:02Speaker 1: time of like not being there for him earlier. Well,
- 10:06Speaker 1: I think that's a really good question that you pose,
- 10:08Speaker 1: because she wasn't there for Cat, so it's hard to
- 10:10Speaker 1: believe that she could have been coming through for Elliot
- 10:12Speaker 1: in any sort of significant way during that time. Very true. Yes,
- 10:16Speaker 1: So maybe she does have regrets about the way she
- 10:20Speaker 1: handled it, And I think she does need to give
- 10:23Speaker 1: herself grace because her son disappeared and her husband died,
- 10:26Speaker 1: and while I don't think she was a good parent
- 10:29Speaker 1: to Cat, I think also expecting her Well, this is
- 10:32Speaker 1: a hot take. I think it's maybe okay that she
- 10:34Speaker 1: dropped the ball on her surrogate parenting to Elliot in
- 10:37Speaker 1: that time she was not really holding it together. But
- 10:41Speaker 1: she probably does regret that. Gosh, you know what you
- 10:45Speaker 1: mentioned that Jacob went missing. I completely forgotten. Forgot that
- 10:50Speaker 1: was the catalyst of Okay, wow, Yeah, I think she
- 10:56Speaker 1: should give herself some grace. Yeah time, Yes, I agree.
- 11:01Speaker 1: But I really love those scenes between she and Elliott
- 11:04Speaker 1: in this episode, especially at the bar. There's a lot
- 11:08Speaker 1: of like fun little nods, you know, when the bar
- 11:11Speaker 1: he mentions Jake being in Toronto and Elliot's like, let's
- 11:16Speaker 1: get another glass of wine or make it a bottle.
- 11:18Speaker 1: It just it's really funny. I thought, funny. Yeah, but
- 11:21Speaker 1: I think that's kind of like the biggest reveal here,
- 11:24Speaker 1: like when she knew he was in Toronto. But she's
- 11:28Speaker 1: flustered a little bit by the fact that the bartender
- 11:31Speaker 1: knows more about Jacob's whereabouts than she does and what
- 11:34Speaker 1: he's doing. Yeah, because I think Kat knows more about
- 11:37Speaker 1: Jacob's whereabouts as well. I mean there have been communicating
- 11:40Speaker 1: via text. Oh that's true. Do you think Kat knows
- 11:43Speaker 1: the job she's doing he's doing? Maybe? But Dell might
- 11:47Speaker 1: be Dell might be a little pissed that Jake hasn't
- 11:50Speaker 1: been in contact with her, you know, under the guise
- 11:54Speaker 1: of I'm trying to protect the family. Yeah. I keep
- 11:57Speaker 1: going back to your first episode commentary, is Beesser Mchersen
- 12:00Speaker 1: busy because it just seems so odd to have him
- 12:05Speaker 1: existing off camera. The whole first two seasons were about
- 12:10Speaker 1: getting him back, and to have him back and then
- 12:13Speaker 1: sending him away. It's odd to me it's a odd choice. Yeah,
- 12:17Speaker 1: I wonder too, like we didn't see him at all
- 12:19Speaker 1: in this episode. No, yeah, I don't like it. I mean,
- 12:22Speaker 1: the show is about family, I feel like I mean,
- 12:25Speaker 1: in Jacob right, it's his story. Yeah. Off, we're chasing
- 12:30Speaker 1: down this Tessa storyline, which some people have issue with.
- 12:33Speaker 1: I find it interesting. Some people are like, oh, we've
- 12:36Speaker 1: taken a total left turn. Look, I find it interesting.
- 12:38Speaker 1: I am interested in the way this is going. That
- 12:40Speaker 1: universe has to expand a little bit, but I don't
- 12:43Speaker 1: want it to expand at the expense of some of
- 12:46Speaker 1: our main characters, particularly a character who was a driving
- 12:51Speaker 1: force of the plot of so much of this show.
- 12:54Speaker 1: I agree. Do you want to talk Alice's time travel
- 12:57Speaker 1: or Cat's first, Let's start with Kat. So Kat emerges
- 13:01Speaker 1: in nineteen twenty five with young Fern. There's a lot,
- 13:05Speaker 1: as you mentioned, there's a lot of parallel structure between
- 13:07Speaker 1: these two events, and I think that's I think it's fun.
- 13:11Speaker 1: I think it's well done. I don't think it's overdone.
- 13:14Speaker 1: What makes you think that it could be seen as overdone? Well,
- 13:18Speaker 1: I think there's a lot, a lot of scenes that
- 13:20Speaker 1: mirror each other the way they come out of the pond,
- 13:22Speaker 1: the conversations that they have when they're walking down the street,
- 13:25Speaker 1: these reveals at the end, maybe someone would say, like
- 13:29Speaker 1: that's too much. I didn't think it was too much.
- 13:30Speaker 1: I liked it. I left it as someone who's like
- 13:35Speaker 1: a planner and like, yeah, you know, like, oh god,
- 13:39Speaker 1: I would have loved to been in like the writer's
- 13:41Speaker 1: room and then like figuring it out, Like how cool
- 13:45Speaker 1: that would be. You know, I don't even know if
- 13:47Speaker 1: that happens in the writer's room. I don't know who
- 13:49Speaker 1: makes it in terms of like let's film it this
- 13:53Speaker 1: way and tell it this way. Like I thought it
- 13:56Speaker 1: was very cool. Yeah, I mean I think it's both
- 13:58Speaker 1: the writing and a directing choice, right, Like the writers
- 14:00Speaker 1: write the scenes and then the director's are like, well,
- 14:02Speaker 1: how can we make this, you know, have that visual effect.
- 14:05Speaker 1: But I agree with you. I like thinking about the
- 14:07Speaker 1: behind the scenes of it. I'm watching on I'm thinking, oh,
- 14:10Speaker 1: there are a lot of thought went into making this happen
- 14:12Speaker 1: back to back. Yeah, I just thought it was cool.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I thought it was really cool. I got to tell you,
- 14:17Speaker 1: I am infatuated with young Fern. She's so fun, She's
- 14:24Speaker 1: just infectious. Yeah, I just good, love it all her
- 14:28Speaker 1: vibes and her attitude about life, and she's a real mystery.
- 14:36Speaker 1: I feel like as well. I was really worried about
- 14:40Speaker 1: this like nineteen twenties era that we were going to
- 14:43Speaker 1: be visiting, just because I feel like everybody does it,
- 14:46Speaker 1: you know, I know they did it and when calls
- 14:48Speaker 1: the heart, not that I watched the show, but I
- 14:50Speaker 1: know that they're in that. They didn't revisit it. They
- 14:52Speaker 1: are there in that era at some point. You know,
- 14:56Speaker 1: every Bravo franchise has like a nineteen twenties part, you
- 15:00Speaker 1: know what I mean. Like it's always just been like, Okay,
- 15:03Speaker 1: it's visually distinct, though I think that's maybe the appeal. Yeah,
- 15:09Speaker 1: and it has a party vibe mm hmmmm. But I
- 15:13Speaker 1: enjoyed it. I enjoyed it too, and this isn't an era.
- 15:16Speaker 1: The idea of prohibition is so interesting to me, so
- 15:21Speaker 1: bizarre to me, right, Yeah, it's just these pockets of
- 15:25Speaker 1: history that I think, what a wild thought that they were, like, well,
- 15:28Speaker 1: this is our biggest issue right now. We're gonna ban
- 15:31Speaker 1: the use of alcohol, and we're gonna have people whose
- 15:34Speaker 1: jaha bit is to enforce such a thing, and then
- 15:36Speaker 1: it launches all this side industry with bootleggers. I thought
- 15:40Speaker 1: that was very interesting for Fern. I like the reveal
- 15:43Speaker 1: that she works at the Herald and that connects her
- 15:45Speaker 1: to Cat, but she's so different. She writes the society
- 15:49Speaker 1: column and she likes finding the salicious things, and she's
- 15:53Speaker 1: trying to break free of her family connection. So she's
- 15:56Speaker 1: living on a bed in the periled office and she's
- 15:58Speaker 1: charmed the editor into allowing her to do that. It's
- 16:00Speaker 1: just I love all of it. Yeah, it's interesting for
- 16:04Speaker 1: her to be like ough, that old landry farm like
- 16:06Speaker 1: doesn't want anything. Yeah, she just wants to be a
- 16:10Speaker 1: modern day lady. And she's like, I'm gonna run it out. Yeah,
- 16:15Speaker 1: I enjoy it. Can I ask you, I'm curious your
- 16:20Speaker 1: take on casting Dan Jannott as Cliff and Gabriel Hogan
- 16:28Speaker 1: as Grayson Goodwin. How do you do you have thoughts
- 16:32Speaker 1: on it? Well, honestly, I kind of think I like
- 16:35Speaker 1: them both. I think I like Gabriel Hogan maybe a
- 16:38Speaker 1: little bit more to me. He slipped right into that
- 16:42Speaker 1: smooth nineteen twenties businessman. He kind of has that look.
- 16:47Speaker 1: And I have a theory about Grayson Goodwin. Ooh, I'm
- 16:51Speaker 1: drawn to Grayson Goodwin as Sam more than Griffin as Sam.
- 16:56Speaker 1: These days, Sam, I'm drawn to Grayson Goodwin and being
- 17:01Speaker 1: Sam Griffin, not Griffin. Sam. What are you talking about
- 17:05Speaker 1: Sam Dell's Sam. I don't think he's Griffin. I think
- 17:08Speaker 1: he's Grace and Goodwin. You do. I don't know what
- 17:13Speaker 1: I'm talking about, but that's the vibe I got. I
- 17:15Speaker 1: watched this episode and then I was sitting here thinking
- 17:18Speaker 1: on my notes, and I'm picturing Grace and Goodwin and
- 17:22Speaker 1: we still haven't seen Griffin even at the end of
- 17:24Speaker 1: this episode, but there's something about him. So you think
- 17:29Speaker 1: Gabriel Hogan as Grayson Goodwin is playing a younger version
- 17:34Speaker 1: of Sam. Look at the two of them next to
- 17:37Speaker 1: each other. Could you buy it? I could buy it, Yes,
- 17:40Speaker 1: but I could buy anything. Anybody tells I know. I know,
- 17:43Speaker 1: and it's maybe not fair to me to say, like, oh,
- 17:46Speaker 1: the actors look similar, so maybe that's the direction they're going.
- 17:49Speaker 1: But again, like you said, I could buy anything, I
- 17:52Speaker 1: will be drawn in multiple different directions. But part of
- 17:54Speaker 1: me thinks, is it possible that Sam is Grace and
- 17:57Speaker 1: Goodwin a character that we're just now meeting it because
- 17:59Speaker 1: Sam has obviously had some secrets this entire time, or
- 18:04Speaker 1: have I gone too far? Doesn't need to be a
- 18:06Speaker 1: character that we knew the existence of since we've known
- 18:08Speaker 1: of Sam. I don't know. Yeah, I don't know. Wow.
- 18:11Speaker 1: I mean anything as possible, anything as possible. Let me
- 18:15Speaker 1: back it up here for a second. I was, I
- 18:18Speaker 1: think a little bit disappointed when I heard that Dan
- 18:20Speaker 1: Jedenot and Gabriel Hogan we're going to be put in
- 18:22Speaker 1: the show, because I was like, these are regular Hallmark players.
- 18:25Speaker 1: I don't want them in the Way Home, which is
- 18:28Speaker 1: like a feels like it operates outside in a universe
- 18:31Speaker 1: outside of Hallmark. Agree, you know, but I eat all
- 18:34Speaker 1: those words. I liked them both as Cliff and Grayson respectively.
- 18:40Speaker 1: I thought, you know, if you recall a recent episode
- 18:44Speaker 1: of our review with the movie that Dan Jennott was in,
- 18:47Speaker 1: I was like, is he actually British or not? Like
- 18:49Speaker 1: I couldn't remember because he plays so many like characters
- 18:53Speaker 1: with their accent, and so to hear him like talk
- 18:57Speaker 1: like pinstck like with an American accent, I was like, oh, okay, okay, anyway,
- 19:02Speaker 1: I thought Cliff and Fern's chemistry was a bananas, like,
- 19:08Speaker 1: these two are really circling each other, like in such
- 19:12Speaker 1: a fun, playful way that I liked a lot to watch.
- 19:16Speaker 1: And then Grayson Goodwin is very intriguing as well. I feel,
- 19:21Speaker 1: I mean, you do love a bad boy. I do
- 19:23Speaker 1: love a bad boy, So you know, I'm like, what
- 19:26Speaker 1: is she doing? I you know, she accepts his proposal,
- 19:30Speaker 1: Grayson's proposal right which did you notice they put the
- 19:34Speaker 1: ring on her right hand? I didn't. Yeah, I thought,
- 19:37Speaker 1: you know, sometimes when the film flips around, it like
- 19:39Speaker 1: looks like it's on the wrong hand, but I noticed
- 19:42Speaker 1: it twice she was wearing the ring on her right hand. Anyway,
- 19:45Speaker 1: I was like, are they setting this up as like
- 19:46Speaker 1: some sort of triangle situation? I think one percent They're
- 19:51Speaker 1: setting it up as a love triangle, and I think
- 19:53Speaker 1: it's very interesting and I think it poses a lot
- 19:56Speaker 1: of questions about the connections between the Goodwines and the Landrys.
- 20:00Speaker 1: And Kat comes home, she's like, am I part Goodwin?
- 20:02Speaker 1: And she's spinning out about this, and Fern is not
- 20:05Speaker 1: so far removed from the family history that Dell shouldn't
- 20:10Speaker 1: have had that information. In my opinion, yes, but to
- 20:14Speaker 1: hear Dale say, all I know about Fern is that
- 20:16Speaker 1: she married this sailor who And yes, that's the story.
- 20:23Speaker 1: That's the plot of the movie she was going to
- 20:25Speaker 1: be in. So like, where is the misinformation at? Yeah?
- 20:29Speaker 1: Is that the story she told her family to cover
- 20:32Speaker 1: up for whatever relationship she didn't want people to know about. Yes,
- 20:36Speaker 1: I see, and this is what I'm like, How is
- 20:38Speaker 1: this going to end in a season? How is this
- 20:40Speaker 1: all going to wrap up at by the end of
- 20:41Speaker 1: the season? Again, I do not know. During this era,
- 20:44Speaker 1: we also meet some of the Augustine boys, Hm, rats,
- 20:51Speaker 1: Ratty have the rattus or something like that. Anyway, they're
- 20:53Speaker 1: not good. So we've established that Augustine line is not great,
- 20:59Speaker 1: a little bit wrong. The badness didn't begin with vic No,
- 21:03Speaker 1: which is so sad because Suzanne was such a bad ass.
- 21:07Speaker 1: And then it yeah, where does that Sam? Where does
- 21:09Speaker 1: that come in? Yeah? For me? The button of this
- 21:12Speaker 1: segment is as Cat's about to jump when she arrives,
- 21:16Speaker 1: she had said, do you know Tessa Augustine? That name
- 21:19Speaker 1: is not familiar to Fern. But when she says, oh,
- 21:22Speaker 1: maybe she's going by Tessa Cooper, Yeah, Fern's face changes
- 21:26Speaker 1: a little bit, and after Cat jumps, she looks very
- 21:29Speaker 1: troubled by that information. Mm hmm exactly, So we may
- 21:33Speaker 1: have hit upon something right. Oh and we didn't mention
- 21:37Speaker 1: when Cat comes out of the water and not immediately,
- 21:41Speaker 1: but it's when they walk and they get to the
- 21:43Speaker 1: Landry farm and Fern says something like, oh, but you're
- 21:45Speaker 1: not the one though, because you're a girl. Did you
- 21:49Speaker 1: catch that? I'm not sure that I did. Fern says
- 21:52Speaker 1: under her breath she doesn't believe Cat is the one though,
- 21:54Speaker 1: being a girl after all, but she says it like
- 21:57Speaker 1: under her breath, like as she's the one, and we
- 22:01Speaker 1: there is all this question of like who is the one?
- 22:05Speaker 1: And how does Fern know? I mean, this just must
- 22:07Speaker 1: be lore, that family lore, right, something about the one?
- 22:12Speaker 1: I don't know. Let's jump to nineteen seventy six and
- 22:22Speaker 1: talk about Alice's jump, Pulton, Evelyn and the terrible Ash.
- 22:26Speaker 1: My notes say, Ash is super douchey, the worst, Oh
- 22:32Speaker 1: my gosh, in the most hippious kind of way, giving
- 22:36Speaker 1: Timothy Schalome bobo Timothy Shallome one hundred percent. When I
- 22:41Speaker 1: was like, I looked at him and I was like, oh,
- 22:42Speaker 1: this guy thinks he's Timothy's Chalomey. Yeah, one hundred percent. Yeah,
- 22:46Speaker 1: we don't see a lot of old Ern. She emerges
- 22:49Speaker 1: from the pond, she runs into Fern. Fern's like, I
- 22:51Speaker 1: don't know what you're doing here, but doesn't have anything
- 22:53Speaker 1: to do with me. You'll figure it out soon enough.
- 22:54Speaker 1: I'm gonna take a nap. I kind of like it
- 22:56Speaker 1: because I really wanted to see our nineteen seventies crew. Yeah,
- 22:59Speaker 1: I love it. I mean, Evelyn shows up in a
- 23:01Speaker 1: red convertible. I'm like, she's back. She looks so good,
- 23:05Speaker 1: she's so fun. I just adore Evelyn so much, and
- 23:09Speaker 1: she's apparently married to the worst dude ever. But I
- 23:14Speaker 1: could see Evelyn falling for this kind of guy one
- 23:16Speaker 1: hundred percent right, a pretentious, condescending poet who dogs her
- 23:23Speaker 1: and says as worldly as this sweet soul could be,
- 23:27Speaker 1: It's like, you're just this little empty vessel, Evelyn. Just
- 23:30Speaker 1: be pretty. There's this scene that I called bongo poetry.
- 23:34Speaker 1: I don't know what else to call it. But do
- 23:37Speaker 1: you think this is Hallmark walking the line of Yeah,
- 23:40Speaker 1: these people are obviously high, but we're just gonna like
- 23:43Speaker 1: let them exist in the background. Yeah, I think so,
- 23:47Speaker 1: I think so yeah. I mean like we're one line
- 23:50Speaker 1: away from like people being naked in the background, right, yeah,
- 23:56Speaker 1: having a real party, if you know what I mean. So, yeah,
- 23:59Speaker 1: I thought that was really funny. The other thing I
- 24:01Speaker 1: love are the looks on Alice and Colton's faces as
- 24:06Speaker 1: they're meeting Ash and as it's I mean, they don't
- 24:09Speaker 1: hide their dislike for this dude at all. It's amazing.
- 24:12Speaker 1: And can you just imagine being them and you wanting
- 24:15Speaker 1: to shake Evelyn like what are you? You could have
- 24:19Speaker 1: anybody and you pick this complete douchebag. Totally. We visit
- 24:25Speaker 1: the tunnels under Lingermore, which throwback to episode one Rita
- 24:29Speaker 1: talks about wanting to tell the ghost stories about those tunnels.
- 24:33Speaker 1: They find the spot of the nineteen twenty six explosion,
- 24:37Speaker 1: which is also I would say, I have a hard
- 24:39Speaker 1: time believing that they haven't been down there before. Yeah,
- 24:41Speaker 1: especially Evelyn totally. Yeah, like as kids, Evelyn and Colton
- 24:46Speaker 1: weren't running through there exactly. Yeah, that's a good point.
- 24:49Speaker 1: We have a nineteen twenty six explosion that we've talked about.
- 24:52Speaker 1: It's the source of the song five Went, in which
- 24:55Speaker 1: Jasper showed Alice on her visit to Coyle's five winn
- 25:00Speaker 1: and four came out, and we have to assume this
- 25:02Speaker 1: has something to do with what we're heading towards in
- 25:04Speaker 1: nineteen twenty six with Cat with the bootleggers, with something
- 25:08Speaker 1: going wrong. Oh, I also wanted to say about nineteen
- 25:10Speaker 1: twenty six. Remember in the first episode, we're like, who
- 25:13Speaker 1: are Cat and Fern afraid of? In that silent film?
- 25:17Speaker 1: I think it's one of our two new dudes. In
- 25:19Speaker 1: my assumption is that it's Grayson. Alice picks something up
- 25:23Speaker 1: off the ground. I thought it looked like a bullet Caseyschell. Yeah, Okay, Yeah,
- 25:29Speaker 1: I thought so too. It was just, yeah, a bullet Casecene.
- 25:32Speaker 1: I also noticed earlier that she kind of like paused
- 25:36Speaker 1: at one of the rooms and was looking at one
- 25:38Speaker 1: of the rooms, and then Colton came over and he's
- 25:40Speaker 1: like this is so cool, and then they got caught
- 25:42Speaker 1: up in their conversation like what did she see in
- 25:46Speaker 1: that room? Yeah, we have Alice kind of processing a
- 25:49Speaker 1: lot of information on her own in these first couple
- 25:51Speaker 1: of episodes. The information about the book she doesn't talk about.
- 25:54Speaker 1: She finds this bullet she's just taking a lot in
- 25:58Speaker 1: and not processing it vocally with anybody. Yet Alice is
- 26:03Speaker 1: the one. Alice is the one. The obviously emotional gut
- 26:08Speaker 1: punch of this this scene is Evelyn confiding that not
- 26:12Speaker 1: only is her marriage falling apart, which duh, she is pregnant,
- 26:17Speaker 1: but she's going to do it alone. She already loves
- 26:19Speaker 1: the baby. God be lewis Goodwin, And now it makes
- 26:24Speaker 1: sense why there's nothing other in the picture and it
- 26:27Speaker 1: has a good Win last name because Ash, of course,
- 26:30Speaker 1: I mean, we don't know that Ash knows at this point,
- 26:33Speaker 1: but one hundred percent is bouncing like he does not
- 26:35Speaker 1: want to be tied down with a baby in Lingermore.
- 26:39Speaker 1: I mean, he even says he's telling Colton at one point,
- 26:44Speaker 1: and the conversation that he has mirrors the story that
- 26:50Speaker 1: is told in nineteen twenty six about jumping out of
- 26:54Speaker 1: like Evie's palace, Like he said, like, if it wasn't
- 26:56Speaker 1: for the ocean, I would have jumped from the palace. Oh, yes,
- 26:59Speaker 1: Evie's Palace, which is a direct, you know, mirror reflection
- 27:03Speaker 1: of the story that's told in twenty six of the
- 27:05Speaker 1: sailor who plunges to his death jumping from the lighthouse
- 27:09Speaker 1: mm hmm, yeah, and he does own he hates this
- 27:12Speaker 1: like small little provincial town. Yeah. Colton and Alice in
- 27:17Speaker 1: this in this era. Sometimes I forget when she's talking
- 27:20Speaker 1: to Colton that that's her grandfather. Like when she talks
- 27:22Speaker 1: to young Culton uh huh uh huh, but he's like, uh,
- 27:25Speaker 1: I was lying and I told you how the Time Traveler. Yeah,
- 27:28Speaker 1: I love it. She's like duh, she plays it off
- 27:31Speaker 1: so well. I think what's interesting in this is we
- 27:35Speaker 1: had talked last episode, like Alice is having trouble with
- 27:37Speaker 1: her songwriting and she's uncomfortable performing. We needed her to
- 27:41Speaker 1: get to this place where young Coulton. We know the
- 27:43Speaker 1: older Coulton had an influence on her singing and songwriting
- 27:46Speaker 1: and was such a fan of her voice and her performing.
- 27:50Speaker 1: So when young Coulton's like, the song's fine, but it's
- 27:53Speaker 1: not you. You need to write your own song, I
- 27:55Speaker 1: feel like that's what we are working towards, Like we
- 27:57Speaker 1: needed Colton to be the one mentoring her. I am
- 28:01Speaker 1: still now. While I watched this, I texted you I
- 28:03Speaker 1: was like, oh, does Alice's song sound familiar that she's singing.
- 28:08Speaker 1: I thought it was the song that Fern had danced to.
- 28:13Speaker 1: She danced and sang at the same time, but I
- 28:16Speaker 1: tried to listen to them both lyse both tried to
- 28:19Speaker 1: listen to them both several times, and I don't believe
- 28:22Speaker 1: it's the same song, okay, because I thought like that
- 28:26Speaker 1: Cat had an interesting reaction to seeing Fern dance and sing,
- 28:31Speaker 1: and I was thinking, like, this is where I'm probably
- 28:34Speaker 1: reading too much into things. While I watched the show,
- 28:36Speaker 1: I was like, oh, what does that mean to Has
- 28:38Speaker 1: she heard the song before? And like, and you know,
- 28:40Speaker 1: music is so tied into episodes and whatever. Anyway, I
- 28:45Speaker 1: don't think there was any correlation, but I couldn't help
- 28:48Speaker 1: but noticed that Alice Alice's song that she was singing
- 28:53Speaker 1: then played in the background of the next scene between
- 28:56Speaker 1: Dell and Elliott at the bar, So I, I don't
- 29:00Speaker 1: know if there's anything there. I need listeners who watch
- 29:03Speaker 1: more closely to weigh in, like, have we heard this
- 29:05Speaker 1: song before? Yeah? To me that that was just nice editing,
- 29:08Speaker 1: but you're right they might have a deeper meaning. Nineteen
- 29:11Speaker 1: seventy six, on the present day, come Together. In seventy six,
- 29:14Speaker 1: alisand Colton are saying goodbye in a motorcycle ghost feeding
- 29:17Speaker 1: past and Colton immediately clocks it as belonging to his
- 29:21Speaker 1: brother Griffin, and he's like, we got to go. They
- 29:23Speaker 1: drive back to the farmhouse and he says, my brother's back.
- 29:27Speaker 1: It's very ominous the way he says that, like he's
- 29:28Speaker 1: not happy about it. Huh. We get all of these reveals,
- 29:32Speaker 1: like Delle asking Colton, do you think Tessa left with him?
- 29:37Speaker 1: And Colton's like, this is when he rips the photo,
- 29:40Speaker 1: So we assume that's Griffin in the photo that they
- 29:43Speaker 1: ripped and threw away, and Colton is like, this has
- 29:45Speaker 1: to be our secret? What are they talking about? And
- 29:48Speaker 1: then Dell tells Elliott in the present like, I don't
- 29:50Speaker 1: know where she is, but I think I know who
- 29:52Speaker 1: she left with. I think, she says, I think I
- 29:55Speaker 1: know who took her, which is interesting phrasing because it
- 29:58Speaker 1: could just be like who took her through the pond,
- 30:01Speaker 1: but yeah, also could be like who took her against
- 30:04Speaker 1: her will. I'm gonna go with took her through the
- 30:06Speaker 1: pond for now, I'm dynasty who's playing this like nineteen
- 30:09Speaker 1: seventy six, Elliott, nineteen seventy You're right, because we don't
- 30:13Speaker 1: know that Dynasy who that is? Also, I feel like,
- 30:18Speaker 1: what is the backstory on Griffin? Why is Griffin not there? Like,
- 30:21Speaker 1: do we know anything from the previous three seasons about
- 30:24Speaker 1: this mysterious brother? Historians weigh in because I can't remember.
- 30:28Speaker 1: There's a Reddit thread that says, I think the wedding
- 30:30Speaker 1: Griffin was referring to in the note was Kat and
- 30:33Speaker 1: Elliott's wedding, not Colton and Dell's. Interesting. Yeah, oh what
- 30:40Speaker 1: a turn of events. Man. I'm telling you I believe anything,
- 30:43Speaker 1: any theory. Somebody says, I'm like, yep, that could totally work. Yep.
- 30:46Speaker 1: I mean this episode ends with Dell saying some promises
- 30:50Speaker 1: have a shelf life, and she's laying the photo fragments
- 30:52Speaker 1: on the table. Of course, we don't get what that
- 30:55Speaker 1: secret is. We don't get the promises in here, but
- 31:01Speaker 1: I imagine we're going to get it in episode three.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Before we move into the new questions that we have raised,
- 31:07Speaker 1: Should we talk really quickly about the title of this episode? Sure,
- 31:11Speaker 1: Blinded by the Light. I laugh out loud every time
- 31:16Speaker 1: I hear or think about this song because I think
- 31:18Speaker 1: it's one of those songs that the lyrics are so misunderstood.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Oh what do you think I don't What do you
- 31:24Speaker 1: think it's about? Well, I don't know what it's about, honestly,
- 31:27Speaker 1: I just know that has that one lyric that everything
- 31:29Speaker 1: says the lyric is revved up like a deuce, but
- 31:31Speaker 1: people think it's wrapped up like a douche. Oh you
- 31:35Speaker 1: never knew that. I love a misunderstood song lyric. Me too,
- 31:38Speaker 1: But it was in the day before, before the internet existed,
- 31:41Speaker 1: and you didn't know, like actually what the lyric was
- 31:43Speaker 1: unless you had the CD or the liner from that. Well, yeah, exactly.
- 31:49Speaker 1: I used to look at those codn'd study those things. Yes,
- 31:55Speaker 1: it was released in nineteen seventy six, so it was intentional.
- 31:58Speaker 1: Let's talk about some questions that have I don't know
- 32:01Speaker 1: if you notice, but the clock does strike eleven ten again?
- 32:05Speaker 1: Is it eleven ten or eleven eleven? Oh? I think
- 32:09Speaker 1: it's eleven eleven. I haven't looked that closely. I always
- 32:12Speaker 1: thought it was eleven ten. Maybe eleven eleven because that's
- 32:17Speaker 1: when people make wishes. Yeah, I'm gonna have to watch
- 32:21Speaker 1: again to see how closely it is. Wow, eleven eleven.
- 32:26Speaker 1: But anyway, why does it do it at that time,
- 32:29Speaker 1: don't know. Time, don't know. My other question that is
- 32:33Speaker 1: just living Rentree in my head. I cannot help. We
- 32:37Speaker 1: have so much talk about Cat's nickname Kitty Cat this episode,
- 32:42Speaker 1: and I'm telling you there is a connection between Kitty
- 32:45Speaker 1: Cat and Kse. You're right, I remember to me, Okay,
- 32:50Speaker 1: I remember talking about it last season. Uh huh, I
- 32:52Speaker 1: remember each season. Yeah, there has to be some thread there,
- 32:58Speaker 1: but I don't know what it is. I don't either.
- 33:02Speaker 1: I don't have any questions that we haven't already discussed,
- 33:05Speaker 1: but there are new questions raised in this episode overall,
- 33:09Speaker 1: to add to our big list. What's the story obviously
- 33:14Speaker 1: with Griffin and that split with Dell and Colton and
- 33:18Speaker 1: Griffin and all these years being gone, what's this big secret?
- 33:23Speaker 1: I have to assume that this is the secret that
- 33:25Speaker 1: the typed letters are referring to. Oh my god. If
- 33:28Speaker 1: it is, it's so like not that deep. Perhaps maybe
- 33:34Speaker 1: what's the deal with Tessa Cooper and Fern looking troubled
- 33:38Speaker 1: when she hears that name? Is Fern's child's father actually
- 33:43Speaker 1: Grace and Goodwin? Is it Cliff or is it an
- 33:46Speaker 1: unknown person who we have not met yet. There's also
- 33:50Speaker 1: that mural at Lingermore that Alice stops in front of
- 33:53Speaker 1: with the children that we saw in a previous season.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Are you talking about in nineteen twenty six, A and
- 34:00Speaker 1: Fern stop in front of Yes, yes, yes, yeah, she goes, Yes,
- 34:03Speaker 1: it's freshly painted. Yeah, because the white witch is on
- 34:06Speaker 1: that photo in that painting. Yes. And the children who
- 34:09Speaker 1: were meant to believe are Colton and young Colton and Evelyn. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Is that just a callback to you know, she knows
- 34:17Speaker 1: what this is about? Or is there you know, is
- 34:19Speaker 1: it just like, oh, here's the provenance of this, or
- 34:22Speaker 1: is something else going on there? I don't know. I
- 34:23Speaker 1: don't know who commissioned that, right, it was freshly painted.
- 34:26Speaker 1: We have some mysteries that we haven't even touched on
- 34:29Speaker 1: in the season so far. Casey, where are they? When
- 34:32Speaker 1: are they? Who are they? And Nick? We haven't even
- 34:35Speaker 1: talked about Nick. Nick and Claire and who is Claire
- 34:37Speaker 1: and what are they doing? And and oh yeah, don't
- 34:40Speaker 1: let there's a lot of people who think Claire is
- 34:42Speaker 1: future Alis. I don't like that at all. I don't
- 34:44Speaker 1: want that anything to do with that. Is Claire future
- 34:47Speaker 1: Tessa maybe I or that something like something like the Hunt,
- 34:51Speaker 1: but no, because you the same amount of time passes.
- 34:54Speaker 1: So Tessa's sixty five. That hurts my brain. No one
- 34:58Speaker 1: try to explain it to me, but yes, I hear
- 35:00Speaker 1: what so she Testa's too old? Turnick? Hey, who says?
- 35:04Speaker 1: I mean she's who says his mother's age? I know?
- 35:08Speaker 1: And then some people said they do like it when
- 35:09Speaker 1: we run down all these questions. So here are the
- 35:11Speaker 1: other questions. We are still asking once again, who jumped
- 35:15Speaker 1: with Tessa? I think all signs are pointing to Griffin. Yes,
- 35:18Speaker 1: all signs are pointing to Griffin, but there is the
- 35:20Speaker 1: theory that it was Alice who left baby Elliott on
- 35:22Speaker 1: the bank of the pond and jumped with someone else
- 35:24Speaker 1: during that time period. So again, what's happening with Fern
- 35:27Speaker 1: and Cat when they're terrified and staring off camera? My
- 35:30Speaker 1: theory is they are looking at Griffin. What was Tessa's
- 35:34Speaker 1: connection to Evelyn? She has two of Evelyn's tarot cards
- 35:37Speaker 1: in her deck. Are we gonna end this season? Seems obvious?
- 35:40Speaker 1: But with a Cat and Elliott wedding, I'm sure anything else. No,
- 35:45Speaker 1: let's what I'm telling you. So much happened, but like
- 35:47Speaker 1: not enough happened. Yeah, we have no answers. We have
- 35:52Speaker 1: no answers, which means the theories can abound at this point,
- 35:57Speaker 1: so lay them on us via email hello at Girls
- 36:00Speaker 1: Goneollmark dot com or voicemail nine four nine eight zero
- 36:05Speaker 1: nine zero if you are I'm a listener mail bag.
- 36:08Speaker 1: I need people to write in and be like, Yo,
- 36:10Speaker 1: this is what's going on. I'm going to be like, oh,
- 36:13Speaker 1: of course that's what's happening because I feel so dumb
- 36:18Speaker 1: when the show ends because I'm like, my head is
