- 0:09Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome back to Inside the Data. On Inside
- 0:12Speaker 1: the Birds, I'm Jeff Mosher, and of course we got
- 0:14Speaker 1: our data and analytics experts, Sam Finkel with us as
- 0:18Speaker 1: we continue to go through and even though we're a
- 0:20Speaker 1: couple of weeks removed now from the combine and everybody's
- 0:23Speaker 1: caught up a free agency, it's going to be the
- 0:25Speaker 1: draft soon. And what Sam has been doing is going
- 0:29Speaker 1: through the athletic testing at the draft. We know the
- 0:31Speaker 1: Eagles pay a lot of attention and cove it really
- 0:34Speaker 1: good athletes at every position. We did offensive tackle in
- 0:38Speaker 1: the last position out. That was our first one for
- 0:41Speaker 1: this offseason, and now we're going to look at interior
- 0:44Speaker 1: offensive line and Sam, I can't think of a position
- 0:47Speaker 1: that is more important to the success of the Eagles
- 0:50Speaker 1: in twenty twenty six than this one. And I also
- 0:53Speaker 1: can't think of maybe an area that really needs to
- 0:56Speaker 1: be restocked for the future, given not only last year,
- 1:00Speaker 1: but recent events with Landon Dickerson basically agreeing to a
- 1:05Speaker 1: little bit of a pay cut. That's not he didn't
- 1:07Speaker 1: take that much money, but the big deal is his
- 1:09Speaker 1: contract now only goes through this year and twenty twenty seven,
- 1:14Speaker 1: and then he's a free agent, and we also know
- 1:16Speaker 1: that there's changing dynamics with this offense that might change
- 1:19Speaker 1: what they look for in interior offensive linemen.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely, Dickerson is undeniably talented. That has never been
- 1:28Speaker 2: the question. The issue is the injuries and how they
- 1:32Speaker 2: stack up with him. You know, there was a reporting
- 1:35Speaker 2: that he was considering retirement. I mean that that's pretty serious,
- 1:39Speaker 2: especially because he's a pretty young athlete. It just shows
- 1:44Speaker 2: you that, you know, even the best athletes, even the
- 1:47Speaker 2: best at their position, injuries happen and they do have
- 1:50Speaker 2: long term effects.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Yes. Absolutely. Let's let's also take a look at what
- 1:55Speaker 1: the Eagles have historically done on the interior offensive line
- 1:58Speaker 1: and what how that might pivot a little bit going
- 2:01Speaker 1: forward because of the new offense. Right Historically at guard,
- 2:05Speaker 1: they have looked for road graders. Landon Dickerson great example.
- 2:09Speaker 1: He was always earlier in his career, a little bit
- 2:11Speaker 1: better in the a lot better actually of a run
- 2:13Speaker 1: blocker than a pass pro. He got better at pass
- 2:15Speaker 1: pro and really became a perennial pro bowler until last year.
- 2:19Speaker 1: The right guard Tyler Steen, the previous one, beckedon. Those
- 2:24Speaker 1: guys were tackles right, there were big guys. Now Steen
- 2:27Speaker 1: isn't as big as Beckon, but he's still a big
- 2:29Speaker 1: guy who played tackle in college. I believe he played
- 2:32Speaker 1: right tackle at left tackle at Alabama. But big guy,
- 2:35Speaker 1: road greater guy, and if even go before that, they
- 2:38Speaker 1: had guys like Isaac Saamalo, Brendon Brooks. These were all
- 2:42Speaker 1: guys who in some form or fashion were good athletes,
- 2:45Speaker 1: but more road graders. I would say center is where
- 2:49Speaker 1: you'll probably see more commonality. Center. They've always had an
- 2:51Speaker 1: undersized guy who moves well horizontally, but guard, I think
- 2:55Speaker 1: we might have to see a philosophical shift here going forward.
- 2:59Speaker 2: I think you as will the new scheme, the fact
- 3:03Speaker 2: Stotland's not there, I think there's there will be a
- 3:05Speaker 2: shift and it will be noticeable, right.
- 3:08Speaker 1: And it's probably a shift that the Eagles are comfortable
- 3:10Speaker 1: with because they've always valued athleticism at every other position,
- 3:14Speaker 1: and so now they're just looking for again athletes who
- 3:17Speaker 1: can be on the move. I just I can't remember
- 3:20Speaker 1: too many times seeing like Dickerson or even Steen, especially
- 3:26Speaker 1: like you just don't see those guys moving, kicking out,
- 3:29Speaker 1: trapping as much. I mean, the Eagles have been an
- 3:31Speaker 1: inside zone, double team duo type of run offense for
- 3:35Speaker 1: the longest time under just Outlin, and now they're about
- 3:38Speaker 1: to expand that a little bit. So it'll be interesting
- 3:40Speaker 1: to see how they expand their scouting.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely, and I do think they will be sensitive
- 3:45Speaker 2: to the personnel that they have. The Eagles have been
- 3:49Speaker 2: historically pretty good at that under Sirianni in terms of
- 3:54Speaker 2: on narrow that pretty well in terms of like how
- 3:58Speaker 2: to use the offensive line. I know it wasn't the
- 4:00Speaker 2: best output last year, but I mean you only had
- 4:03Speaker 2: to go one year back to see what they actually
- 4:06Speaker 2: were capable of when they optimized that usage with Saquon's
- 4:10Speaker 2: two thousand yard rushing seasons.
- 4:12Speaker 1: So right, right, absolutely, and then there was one last
- 4:16Speaker 1: oh and just to sort of stick on this point, Sam,
- 4:19Speaker 1: I mean, even though they expect to have Steen it
- 4:22Speaker 1: right guard and Dickerson at left guard and Jurgen, they're
- 4:25Speaker 1: basically running it back with this offensive line that had
- 4:28Speaker 1: a lot of injuries last year. Their depth here is
- 4:31Speaker 1: also in question. I mean, they did draft Drew Kendall,
- 4:34Speaker 1: he is a natural center. I don't know that they
- 4:37Speaker 1: have a true awesome you know, they drafted Cameron Williams.
- 4:41Speaker 1: He's a tackle right last year, these are Day three guys. Also,
- 4:44Speaker 1: Miles Hinton, he's a tackle. You know, they've missed or
- 4:47Speaker 1: didn't retain guys like Trevor Keegan or Dylan McMahon in
- 4:51Speaker 1: the past. So I don't I don't know that they
- 4:53Speaker 1: have like the type of guards in the pipeline here
- 4:57Speaker 1: that really fit what they are going to want to do.
- 5:02Speaker 1: You know with this new offense. Would you agree on that.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I would agree on that. I will say that depth
- 5:08Speaker 2: is really important. I mean, especially with the history of injuries,
- 5:12Speaker 2: and so when you're building your roster, you want guys
- 5:15Speaker 2: that you can plug and play that will have you know,
- 5:18Speaker 2: similar output, and you're not always going to get the
- 5:21Speaker 2: same output, but you want guys that you can plug
- 5:23Speaker 2: and play should injuries because they probably they will happen, yep.
- 5:27Speaker 2: So you got to build your roster from the bottom
- 5:29Speaker 2: up in terms of the strengths of the team.
- 5:33Speaker 1: So I think probably gonna have to get some veterans
- 5:36Speaker 1: too that fit what they do in free agency, because
- 5:39Speaker 1: if they had to play a game today with Brett
- 5:42Speaker 1: Toath now with the forty nine ers, which by the way,
- 5:44Speaker 1: validated what we had talked about about how he might
- 5:47Speaker 1: be a better fit for this new offense because he's
- 5:49Speaker 1: more of an athlete than a road grader. Without him,
- 5:52Speaker 1: now your top backup interior offensive and by the way,
- 5:55Speaker 1: Matt Pryor also now with Arizona, your top interior offensive
- 5:59Speaker 1: line is basically Drew Kendall and Jake Majors. So they've
- 6:03Speaker 1: got some work to do to really repair that interior
- 6:06Speaker 1: of the offensive line.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, all right, So.
- 6:10Speaker 1: With that, we will look at interior offensive line at
- 6:14Speaker 1: the combine and how well they tested, and we'll pay
- 6:17Speaker 1: attention to the ones that really tested well. Now, I
- 6:20Speaker 1: do want to remind people that when we did offensive tackle,
- 6:23Speaker 1: there was a player from Utah, I believe, Spencer Fano,
- 6:28Speaker 1: who is a tackle by college trade but probably will
- 6:32Speaker 1: project to guard and maybe center for some teams at
- 6:36Speaker 1: the NFL level. And he was quite the athlete, right,
- 6:39Speaker 1: So he's got it. He's probably gonna be a top
- 6:42Speaker 1: forty pick, if not a first round. Yeah, so that's
- 6:44Speaker 1: a name I wanted to remind everybody of that won't
- 6:47Speaker 1: be on this list, but we'll be one of those
- 6:49Speaker 1: sought after athletic guards who fit the kind of offense.
- 6:52Speaker 2: The Eagles are gonna run, and he's one of my
- 6:54Speaker 2: favorite prospects in this draft.
- 6:56Speaker 1: You know, he became sort of my favorite, just one
- 6:59Speaker 1: of my favorites. I research more than I can't say.
- 7:02Speaker 1: I watch a lot of Utah, you know, offensive line,
- 7:04Speaker 1: but he will make me go to the tape. At
- 7:06Speaker 1: some point I'll talk to Greg cosall about him too
- 7:09Speaker 1: and get his opinion. So here you have a list
- 7:12Speaker 1: of the offensive lineer tech. Now, the interesting thing about
- 7:14Speaker 1: this is if we're talking a year ago or two
- 7:19Speaker 1: years ago, right, you're looking at one of the top
- 7:21Speaker 1: maybe the top interior offensive line prospects somewhere near and
- 7:24Speaker 1: dear to our hearts. A Penn Stater Vega ione right,
- 7:29Speaker 1: it's IONI right, that's how you pronounce it, Yoanni Vega
- 7:33Speaker 1: Yoanni right. Correct, I'm keeping it to Vega instead of
- 7:36Speaker 1: all I'm in a Vega right, great size, but not
- 7:41Speaker 1: necessarily the greatest athlete. He's more like the road grader.
- 7:44Speaker 1: I'll fit any offense because he's really talented, right, but
- 7:46Speaker 1: he would.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Not an optimal Eagles pick under the last regime.
- 7:50Speaker 1: Absolutely like plug and play. This is the guy. In fact,
- 7:54Speaker 1: I already had a college. I'm sorry. An NFL executive
- 7:58Speaker 1: who does a lot of college work tell me that
- 7:59Speaker 1: he I own he's going to be a top twelve
- 8:02Speaker 1: to fifteen pick, which is pretty amazing for a guy
- 8:05Speaker 1: who's just a guard center. I don't think that there's
- 8:07Speaker 1: any tackle, you know, I asked. He doesn't see him
- 8:09Speaker 1: as a tackle at all. He's basically in just a
- 8:11Speaker 1: road grading awesome interior offensive lineman.
- 8:14Speaker 2: Yeah, without our Penn State bias. I know, I'm wearing
- 8:17Speaker 2: the Penn State hat obviously, my ties to Penn State.
- 8:21Speaker 2: I think he as a prospect, just purely objectively, as
- 8:24Speaker 2: a prospect, is one of the best guard prospects we've
- 8:27Speaker 2: had in a couple of years.
- 8:28Speaker 1: Yeah. I was trying to think of the last guard
- 8:32Speaker 1: Penn State guard to go in the first round, and
- 8:35Speaker 1: I was, you know, we've had some tackles, you know,
- 8:37Speaker 1: especially more recently with the guy from the Jets full
- 8:41Speaker 1: of I can't who I can't I remember his name,
- 8:44Speaker 1: Olu Olu oluf Shanu, right, and then there've always been
- 8:48Speaker 1: like some tackles scattered in here, you know, from Penn State,
- 8:51Speaker 1: even when they weren't so good. But I can't remember.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Probably maybe in the nineties where you saw a guard
- 8:55Speaker 1: like well, even Steph Wisnowski wasn't a first round pick
- 8:59Speaker 1: or anything. He was like a fifth from a pump
- 9:01Speaker 1: pick for the Raiders. So it's been a while. Yeah,
- 9:03Speaker 1: I can think of a guard from Penn State that
- 9:05Speaker 1: went this high.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Absolutely, it's he's a great prospect, bias society, great prospect, awesome.
- 9:14Speaker 1: So give me some names here in your research that
- 9:16Speaker 1: you think have the athleticism that the Eagles will like
- 9:20Speaker 1: and could go anywhere, you know, top fifty to sixty five.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Well, I think one another one of my favorite prospects
- 9:28Speaker 2: is the guy with the gold Athleticism score, and that's
- 9:32Speaker 2: Rutledge Attack. I think he's very physical, aggressive, great what
- 9:39Speaker 2: you like to see a guard. I feel like he's
- 9:41Speaker 2: like an optimal blend of that road grader and athlete, right,
- 9:46Speaker 2: And I think that makes him really unique in this
- 9:48Speaker 2: draft class. And I just really enjoyed everything that I've read,
- 9:53Speaker 2: I've seen, and I've seen about him. Really all the
- 9:56Speaker 2: information I've gathered on him, he looks like a great prospect.
- 10:00Speaker 1: Killan Rutledge. I wonder if he's any relation to wasn't
- 10:03Speaker 1: there a Rutledge guard who played at Georgia last year
- 10:06Speaker 1: that went to yes, there was.
- 10:07Speaker 2: I am very curious that myself. When I was doing
- 10:10Speaker 2: this research, I did notice that I don't remember I
- 10:13Speaker 2: looked it up or not.
- 10:15Speaker 1: I think he went to a Lions too, if I'm
- 10:17Speaker 1: not mistaken. It might have might be spelled a little
- 10:21Speaker 1: bit differently, But.
- 10:23Speaker 2: There is no widely available information about a brother for
- 10:26Speaker 2: Georgia Tech offensive line killing Rutledge.
- 10:28Speaker 1: That's awesome, all right. The big thing here for those
- 10:31Speaker 1: who are listening and cannot see the chart here on YouTube,
- 10:36Speaker 1: Sam has his Olympics style color coding for guys who
- 10:39Speaker 1: were first or second or third place finisher in certain
- 10:42Speaker 1: categories and killing Rutledge from Tech. He is your gold champ,
- 10:47Speaker 1: gold medal champion in the bench press right with twenty
- 10:50Speaker 1: nine reps? And then are these two.
- 10:53Speaker 2: That's actually bronze.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Oh that's bronze. Oh yeah, I'm sorry. Gold is the
- 10:58Speaker 1: athleticism score though, right, yeah, right, So to call the
- 11:02Speaker 1: gold in the overall athleticism score bronze in the bench
- 11:06Speaker 1: press at twenty nine reps, that's right because Connor lu
- 11:08Speaker 1: got the gold there and then silver medals in both
- 11:13Speaker 1: what's the what are those that would.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Be this split right and the broad.
- 11:20Speaker 1: God, it's split in the broad. So I think you're
- 11:23Speaker 1: hitting it on the head here, the nail on the
- 11:25Speaker 1: head by saying he's the perfect combination of someone who
- 11:28Speaker 1: can be a road grater. He has great strength with
- 11:30Speaker 1: the bench press, but also a very good athlete who
- 11:34Speaker 1: excelled in other categories while including the broad.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Yeah. Absolutely, that's the great way to put it. I definitely.
- 11:41Speaker 2: And remember the athleticism score for all the benefits it provides.
- 11:46Speaker 2: You have to understand the inputs, and size is a
- 11:49Speaker 2: big input in there. Let me just pull up his
- 11:53Speaker 2: size just to tell you a little bit about him.
- 11:57Speaker 2: He according to the NFL Combine site, which is now
- 12:02Speaker 2: loading very very slowly, of course, he is six four
- 12:07Speaker 2: three sixteen good size.
- 12:09Speaker 1: I mean that's that to me, Like the old Eagles
- 12:13Speaker 1: guard is six four well, I mean the old Eagles
- 12:15Speaker 1: guard could get up to six for six six seven
- 12:17Speaker 1: with Becton in there, right, but it's generally six three
- 12:20Speaker 1: to six five and probably anywhere between three twenty and
- 12:25Speaker 1: three forty. I think Sayamalu was actually a little under that,
- 12:27Speaker 1: but he kind of played like he was three thirty
- 12:29Speaker 1: he was so strong.
- 12:30Speaker 2: He really did yeah, he really did.
- 12:32Speaker 1: Yeah. But so this will be a little bit undersized
- 12:36Speaker 1: in quote, but more athletic.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Absolutely, And then some other names that are obviously interesting.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I mean really, anywhere you see the Olympic medals, that's
- 12:48Speaker 2: the guys you should be looking at. I think his
- 12:50Speaker 2: interesting is who would I want to pull that? I
- 12:53Speaker 2: think Jalen Farmer is a fun one out of Kentucky. Okay,
- 12:58Speaker 2: very fast, I need the second fast forty yard dash
- 13:01Speaker 2: only lost to Jaeger Burton of Kentucky, who also actually
- 13:05Speaker 2: has more Olympic medals. He ran up. I'm sorry, No,
- 13:10Speaker 2: he's after only to Logan Jones, who was point zero
- 13:13Speaker 2: one faster. All those guys, all the two Kentucky interior
- 13:18Speaker 2: offensive linemen, where the silver and the bronze medalists for
- 13:22Speaker 2: the forty yard dash, which, again, as we talked about,
- 13:24Speaker 2: is not super important. The split is probably more important
- 13:29Speaker 2: for the offensive lineman, particularly even the interior offensive lineman.
- 13:34Speaker 2: The split for Yaeger Burton was the best. He had
- 13:38Speaker 2: a one point seven and his vertical jump was the
- 13:43Speaker 2: second best and his broad jump was the best. So
- 13:45Speaker 2: Jager Burton out of Kentucky is definitely an interesting one.
- 13:49Speaker 2: Jalen Farmer out of Kentucky had the third best broad jump,
- 13:55Speaker 2: so also super interesting. So the Kentucky interior offensive line interesting.
- 13:58Speaker 1: I didn't have that on my bingo car in two
- 14:00Speaker 1: thousand and for the twenty twenty six draft, go big
- 14:04Speaker 1: on Kentucky offense running him. I want to I want
- 14:08Speaker 1: to point out the beauty of what we talk about
- 14:11Speaker 1: all the time to sort of clear up right what
- 14:14Speaker 1: might be a misconception. So Jennings Dunker from Iowa, who
- 14:18Speaker 1: is someone that I've already gotten, like you know or
- 14:21Speaker 1: will the Eagles be interested? Because A, he's got a
- 14:24Speaker 1: great name. B he's if you see him, he's got
- 14:27Speaker 1: like offensive lineman written all over him, right and then
- 14:31Speaker 1: see or that would be c as he went to
- 14:32Speaker 1: Iowa and we know how good Iowa offensive lineman are.
- 14:35Speaker 1: He is your I want to say, that's your bronze, right,
- 14:38Speaker 1: your third best overall athleticism score at eighty six. But
- 14:42Speaker 1: if you'll notice, for those who can't see and are
- 14:46Speaker 1: just listening, he was not a gold, silver, or bronze
- 14:49Speaker 1: finisher in any of the athletic category. So I'm gonna
- 14:53Speaker 1: go ahead and guess Sam. The thing that we talk
- 14:56Speaker 1: about all the time is your athleticism score also includes
- 14:59Speaker 1: your size and measurables, not just your athletic testing. I'm
- 15:02Speaker 1: guessing he has great size.
- 15:04Speaker 2: He's six five three nineteen.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I wasn't really guessing. I knew that. Yeah, he's uh,
- 15:10Speaker 1: he's a he's kind of a stud from from a
- 15:13Speaker 1: size standpoint, but maybe not from an athletic testing standpoint.
- 15:17Speaker 1: But I feel like that is like vintage Iowa guys.
- 15:20Speaker 2: It really is. I mean, if you look at it,
- 15:23Speaker 2: I mean, his broad jump is among the best mm hm,
- 15:27Speaker 2: and he performed okay. I mean there's nothing that stands
- 15:31Speaker 2: out because if there's no metallist, there's the top three
- 15:33Speaker 2: on anything, right, But the same degree, it's there's nothing
- 15:37Speaker 2: that's overly concerning with those testing numbers, right his seally
- 15:43Speaker 2: from that perspective.
- 15:45Speaker 1: Now he's he said six seven, right or no, six
- 15:48Speaker 1: six six' five three what three nineteen sixty five three.
- 15:52Speaker 1: NINETEEN i think that that would be all right with.
- 15:54Speaker 1: YOU i, MEAN i, MEAN i think that that's what
- 15:56Speaker 1: they're looking at, now these guys who are going to
- 15:58Speaker 1: be in the three to three twenty range as opposed
- 15:59Speaker 1: to over, that and it makes some. Sense he also
- 16:03Speaker 1: did not participate in the bench, press which usually you
- 16:05Speaker 1: don't do if you don't think you're going to quote
- 16:08Speaker 1: unquote be a. Medallist, right but so i'd be curious
- 16:13Speaker 1: if he does that as pro day or if he
- 16:15Speaker 1: you know what those kind of numbers would look.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Like, yeah, absolutely boy a lot alignment did not do
- 16:22Speaker 2: the bench.
- 16:22Speaker 1: PRESS i find that really.
- 16:24Speaker 2: INTERESTING i wonder it seems like a little bit of
- 16:28Speaker 2: a trend this, year AND i wonder if you go
- 16:30Speaker 2: back the past couple of years if that's Been because
- 16:32Speaker 2: this is the first time we're doing this kind of, analysis,
- 16:36Speaker 2: RIGHT i guess it'll be interesting to look at for
- 16:38Speaker 2: the next couple of. Years, sure all.
- 16:41Speaker 1: Right let's take a look AT i want thing to
- 16:45Speaker 1: look At Dylan wade From. Auburn, sure because he does
- 16:48Speaker 1: have a, gold silver and bronze, finish, right he's golden
- 16:54Speaker 1: in shuttle four five, four and he's silver and vertical
- 16:59Speaker 1: thirty two and a half and bronze in three cone
- 17:02Speaker 1: seven point five to. Four but as overall athletic'm scores eighty.
- 17:05Speaker 1: One So i'm guessing here that his size is sort
- 17:10Speaker 1: of thought the opposite the dunker. Thing he must not
- 17:12Speaker 1: have ideal.
- 17:12Speaker 2: Size actually his size isn't. Bad he's six three three, Sixteen.
- 17:19Speaker 1: Okay so then what it must be is that his
- 17:21Speaker 1: broad jump is very low compared to some of the
- 17:23Speaker 1: top finishers there at eight oh.
- 17:24Speaker 2: Eight, right, yeah that makes sense to. ME i mean
- 17:27Speaker 2: it's one of the lower, ones.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Right his forty yard dash is also it's not, terrible
- 17:32Speaker 1: but it's it's. Slow it's. Five not that we care
- 17:35Speaker 1: about this with offensive, lineman but it all goes into
- 17:37Speaker 1: the we get happy when offensive linemen run really fast,
- 17:40Speaker 1: Forty so we gotta at least say if he runs
- 17:42Speaker 1: a five oh, five it's just pretty.
