- 0:43Speaker 2: You guys may not know this.
- 0:44Speaker 1: I wrote a book Not Got over a decade ago,
- 0:47Speaker 1: and the book was really about a changing consumer landscape
- 0:50Speaker 1: that was happening in the restaurant industry. It was all
- 0:52Speaker 1: about social and next generation technology. So it has been
- 0:56Speaker 1: and I've been going around this for quite some time.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Of course, we have been covering the topic of what
- 1:02Speaker 1: McDonald's is doing for quite some time because they were
- 1:05Speaker 1: the natural next evolution for possibly Web three components.
- 1:10Speaker 2: And I think this is just the beginning. There's going
- 1:12Speaker 2: to be a lot more of them that will go
- 1:13Speaker 2: in that direction. But if you guys want to.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Check those videos out, here's what's happening with McDonald's. I
- 1:18Speaker 1: want to showcase this right here.
- 1:19Speaker 2: This is their x.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Account four point seven million followers, and guess what they
- 1:24Speaker 1: just dropped right there, drinking out of a mcafe and
- 1:27Speaker 1: doodles exclusively starting right.
- 1:29Speaker 2: Now on the eighteenth.
- 1:30Speaker 1: So just around the corner here we will have these
- 1:34Speaker 1: available now. Doodles, as we all know, is a Web
- 1:36Speaker 1: three NFT project. How is all this going to be
- 1:39Speaker 1: tied in to McDonald's. I think this is all built
- 1:42Speaker 1: around a brand IP component. When you jump over to
- 1:45Speaker 1: find a little bit more about this, this is the
- 1:46Speaker 1: McDonald's Dot Doodles dot app. This is McDonald's main app.
- 1:51Speaker 1: And of course the cool thing right here is the integration.
- 1:54Speaker 1: This is something that we've talked about quite a bit,
- 1:56Speaker 1: and that is for any major company like McDonald's or
- 1:59Speaker 1: others to really roll something out in this next generation tech,
- 2:03Speaker 1: you've got to do it in your main line features
- 2:07Speaker 1: of how you're communicating to the customer, and that is
- 2:09Speaker 1: what they're doing.
- 2:09Speaker 2: So kudo's McDonald's right there.
- 2:11Speaker 1: There's going to be digital apparel for your characters that
- 2:14Speaker 1: is eventually going to move to a physical component. Hence
- 2:18Speaker 1: the whole idea around figitals, and of course the way
- 2:20Speaker 1: they're doing it is with these collectors. So here's a
- 2:23Speaker 1: good example. They're also made some crazy rare enamel pins.
- 2:25Speaker 1: These are going to both be physical and digital tied
- 2:28Speaker 1: up into Again, brands starting to understand what this means
- 2:33Speaker 1: in terms of building IP and consumer connectivity. I say
- 2:37Speaker 1: it all the time, is it is the next generation
- 2:40Speaker 1: of where marketing is going to be going for big
- 2:42Speaker 1: brands and really any brand for that matter. But definitely
- 2:46Speaker 1: kudos to McDonald's. This one is a big one. I
- 2:49Speaker 1: think this will be one that will be easily one.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Here's a good example. This is one of the team
- 2:53Speaker 1: leads at McDonald's. All their digital components will be traded
- 2:57Speaker 1: within the Doodles app, the studio app, and that course
- 3:00Speaker 1: is all writing on base, which is something we talk
- 3:03Speaker 1: about here a lot in terms of the base growth.
- 3:05Speaker 2: The other thing that's going to play into this is.
- 3:07Speaker 1: How they advertise it this is the in store Kiosk
- 3:10Speaker 1: program within McDonald's.
- 3:12Speaker 2: So this is a big.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Deal because it's exposing the massive millions of people to
- 3:18Speaker 1: what is going on right here. And I think this
- 3:20Speaker 1: will start to create a lot of curiosity around how
- 3:24Speaker 1: this program is going to work.
- 3:25Speaker 2: This could be a big one for sure.
- 3:27Speaker 1: The other thing is is the way that they're going
- 3:29Speaker 1: to go out and really kind of expose this. And
- 3:31Speaker 1: this is talking about a new kind of collaboration and
- 3:34Speaker 1: they're going to call it a test, but it's talking
- 3:35Speaker 1: about one hundred million cups. Now, this is pretty significant.
- 3:38Speaker 1: One hundred million people, even a very small fraction go
- 3:42Speaker 1: out and explore the app on doodles. It's going to
- 3:45Speaker 1: expose them to the base ecosystem. We all know what
- 3:48Speaker 1: that means. Ethereum is playing into this as well. I
- 3:51Speaker 1: want to go to a clip real quick, because this
- 3:53Speaker 1: is the how the collectible cups went viral.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Take a look.
- 3:57Speaker 3: McDonald's is currently giving away these collectible cups honoring classic
- 4:01Speaker 3: Happy Meal toys like the Teeny Babies, Jurassic Park cups,
- 4:04Speaker 3: and Shrek toys. The catches that you'll just be given
- 4:06Speaker 3: this cup in an opaque blue bag, so you won't
- 4:08Speaker 3: know which cup you're getting exactly. This seller is pricing
- 4:11Speaker 3: the Hello Kitty Snoopy cup for forty five dollars, which
- 4:14Speaker 3: is pretty crazy because these things are actually selling for
- 4:16Speaker 3: more than the original Jurassic Park cups that they were
- 4:18Speaker 3: paying tribute to.
- 4:19Speaker 1: Those cups that I just talked about right there. This
- 4:22Speaker 1: is what saved their Q three earnings, so take a look.
- 4:25Speaker 4: We acknowledged that our performance so far this year has
- 4:28Speaker 4: fallen short of expectations, with negative global COMP sales for
- 4:32Speaker 4: the quarter amid a challenging industry environment. However, US COMP
- 4:36Speaker 4: sales were positive for the third quarter.
- 4:39Speaker 5: Recently, we launched the Collector's Edition campaign and drove high checked,
- 4:43Speaker 5: full margin traffic into our restaurants and giving customers more
- 4:47Speaker 5: reason to purchase core menu items. The campaign drove customers
- 4:52Speaker 5: to our restaurants, especially in the US. Collector's Edition maximized
- 4:56Speaker 5: the power and scale of our global brand while ensuring
- 4:59Speaker 5: local fas, flexibility and cultural relevance to connect fans in
- 5:03Speaker 5: unexpected ways. Similarly, the UK's near sellout of the Grimace
- 5:07Speaker 5: Shake promotion in forty eight hours is proof that when
- 5:11Speaker 5: we share and scale world class ideas across market we
- 5:15Speaker 5: can maximize impact investing in innovation, compairing that with fresh
- 5:19Speaker 5: marketing ideas.
- 5:20Speaker 1: All right, So I think McDonald's came to a realization here,
- 5:24Speaker 1: and that is that collectibles are our thing. It is
- 5:27Speaker 1: going to be something that they're going to be a
- 5:28Speaker 1: part of from a brand ig P delivery point going forward.
- 5:32Speaker 2: They are going to have.
- 5:32Speaker 1: To figure out how to scale this though, and I
- 5:35Speaker 1: think the only way it scales is to move it
- 5:38Speaker 1: into digital.
- 5:39Speaker 2: That's where Doodles comes in. Doodle's studio moves to base.
- 5:43Speaker 1: We talked about this not too long ago on Magic
- 5:46Speaker 1: Eden just to give an example. This is what Doodles
- 5:48Speaker 1: is doing after the launch and the relationship with McDonald's.
- 5:51Speaker 1: I anticipate we're probably going to see a lot of
- 5:53Speaker 1: movement on the NFT project itself.
- 5:56Speaker 2: I'm going to go to.
- 5:56Speaker 1: Another clip here and this will get into a little
- 5:58Speaker 1: bit more detail on Doodle CEO saying hey, get ready
- 6:02Speaker 1: to watch this.
- 6:03Speaker 6: We have over two hundred and sixty million views on
- 6:06Speaker 6: YouTube this year. Like that's massive. No one in Web
- 6:09Speaker 6: three comes even close to that. This product that we've
- 6:11Speaker 6: developed in the Doodle studio, like We're over forty thousand
- 6:14Speaker 6: users now in very short order. So what you can
- 6:17Speaker 6: expect from us more entertainment product, some massive brand partnerships.
- 6:22Speaker 6: That's going to get not just everybody in Web three excited,
- 6:25Speaker 6: but people far and wide around the world.
- 6:28Speaker 1: The potential for an extension of the brand itself. The
- 6:31Speaker 1: collaborations are going to start pouring in, but I think
- 6:34Speaker 1: you're going to see a handful of others that will
- 6:36Speaker 1: also make their way into the market. Here's one to
- 6:40Speaker 1: be thinking about it. Grimas may be the endplay here,
- 6:42Speaker 1: and I'll explain that in a second. This is what
- 6:45Speaker 1: they serve on a daily basis right there, eight million
- 6:48Speaker 1: cups of coffee a day. They're testing this with one
- 6:50Speaker 1: hundred million, so you're talking basically about.
- 6:52Speaker 2: Two weeks of supply.
- 6:55Speaker 1: This could go viral so fast and could become the
- 6:59Speaker 1: next level of how brands truly start to tack into this.
- 7:03Speaker 1: This is what I think is huge and why it matters.
- 7:07Speaker 1: But Donald also is doing a drop of their first
- 7:10Speaker 1: reviewsable cups. Now, this isn't necessarily the answer, and I'll
- 7:15Speaker 1: explain it in a second, but the idea is is
- 7:17Speaker 1: they're looking at reusable cups as a collectible. They're probably
- 7:20Speaker 1: going to tie this in. I think the real question
- 7:22Speaker 1: here is how do they figure out scale.
- 7:25Speaker 2: We've talked about it a couple of times.
- 7:26Speaker 1: Scale is one of the biggest things that you have
- 7:28Speaker 1: to be able to do, so much so that Pepsi,
- 7:31Speaker 1: Starbucks all looking at the same thing, reusable cups. Let's
- 7:35Speaker 1: go go this direction. If you're looking at brand ip though,
- 7:39Speaker 1: the delivery of that can only go so far because
- 7:42Speaker 1: eventually you're going to be looking at problems with plastic
- 7:46Speaker 1: in general. That's not going to be something that the
- 7:48Speaker 1: next generation is going to be fond of. It's also
- 7:51Speaker 1: already being attacked in many other countries. Global companies like
- 7:55Speaker 1: Starbucks and McDonald's are definitely going to face some headwinds
- 7:58Speaker 1: on all of that. I want to go to this
- 8:00Speaker 1: right here, because this is the vice president of marketing
- 8:03Speaker 1: over at mcdonale's explaining a little bit more about this program.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Take a look. Can you talk about a career highlight
- 8:09Speaker 2: for you?
- 8:09Speaker 7: I took my mom to South Africa. She's from, of course,
- 8:12Speaker 7: a different generation, and we stopped at a McDonald's and
- 8:15Speaker 7: when we walked into the McDonald's, I was like, this
- 8:18Speaker 7: is my cup and she was like, yell is whatever.
- 8:20Speaker 7: I know you work at McDonald's. Let's just get some coffee.
- 8:22Speaker 7: I was like, no, no, no, this is the cup
- 8:24Speaker 7: that I designed. They carried that US Design international, and
- 8:28Speaker 7: I didn't realize that at the time. It was a
- 8:31Speaker 7: career moment for me.
- 8:32Speaker 6: The business impact of the Grimma's birthday was significant and sustained,
- 8:36Speaker 6: and you could actually measure that correct.
- 8:38Speaker 7: Yes, can't reveal numbers, but we saw our fans starting
- 8:42Speaker 7: to talk about Grimace more on our behalf. It started
- 8:45Speaker 7: within our adult happy meal that we had. People got
- 8:48Speaker 7: really excited about those characters again. We started running out
- 8:52Speaker 7: and the fans were like, it's okay. McDonald's is always
- 8:55Speaker 7: about assured supplier. For the years I've been here, it's
- 8:57Speaker 7: always been about a shared supply where the consumer behave
- 9:00Speaker 7: is changing to where it is okay to have scarcity,
- 9:03Speaker 7: okay to run out on certain things. Now we're not
- 9:06Speaker 7: going to run out of a big Mac. It allowed
- 9:08Speaker 7: us to enter the conversation in a more authentic way,
- 9:11Speaker 7: and I am excited to see how that voice is
- 9:14Speaker 7: going to continue to grow and continue to shape what
- 9:18Speaker 7: is going on in the industry. Whatever it is there
- 9:21Speaker 7: is just something right now that is happening, and it's
- 9:24Speaker 7: been happening in the little parts, but now it's like
- 9:26Speaker 7: it's unleashed, unconstrained, and I'm excited about that, all right.
- 9:31Speaker 2: So I'm in agreement with her. I'm excited about it too.
- 9:33Speaker 1: And remember that Grimace, I think is still the cornerstone
- 9:36Speaker 1: of where a digital ip could extend. For McDonald's one
- 9:41Speaker 1: of the few that are out there that could really
- 9:43Speaker 1: win big. We've talked about this many times. We did
- 9:45Speaker 1: a whole video on what we thought.
- 9:47Speaker 2: All right.
- 9:47Speaker 1: So another thing on the same point talking point here
- 9:51Speaker 1: was the Grimace hack and this happened on their Instagram account.
- 9:55Speaker 1: There was a solonotoken created on it, you know, the
- 9:58Speaker 1: scam began, and I think that have been the thing
- 10:00Speaker 1: that kind of turned them away from Solana and maybe
- 10:04Speaker 1: over into Base. So this was a situation that I
- 10:07Speaker 1: think all blockchains out there need to understand this. This
- 10:10Speaker 1: is a scenario, especially we see more and more big
- 10:13Speaker 1: brands kind of going in this direction. What kind of
- 10:16Speaker 1: platform are we going to start to see a lot
- 10:18Speaker 1: more of this?
- 10:18Speaker 2: Well, right here, you've.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Got potentially one of it, and that is one billion transactions,
- 10:23Speaker 1: and it's just now moving all happening over on Base.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Some other things that are happening on Base, of course,
- 10:29Speaker 1: is the Mimi ecosystem. There's bread obviously, mister Miggles. All
- 10:33Speaker 1: of this starting to show up, and I think this
- 10:34Speaker 1: will be just more fuel for brands to really start
- 10:38Speaker 1: to understand. I think the key here will be when
- 10:41Speaker 1: brands start to figure out how meme coins work. That'll
- 10:44Speaker 1: be very interesting. Who are the other winners, Well, optimism
- 10:47Speaker 1: could be right there. They're in a position right now
- 10:50Speaker 1: where the token is suppressed. Some One other thing, of
- 10:54Speaker 1: course is Kracking is launching their main net on optimism
- 10:58Speaker 1: in Q one of next. So again this just piles
- 11:01Speaker 1: in to the optimistic position of where all this could
- 11:05Speaker 1: be going. All right, hopefully this gives you a little
- 11:08Speaker 1: bit of a breakdown on this. I think you're going
- 11:10Speaker 1: to see a lot more of these kinds of collaborations.
- 11:12Speaker 1: This may just be the very beginning with McDonald's and
- 11:15Speaker 1: many others. But scalability is going to be very critical here,
- 11:18Speaker 1: and I think that's where digital becomes reality. So a
- 11:22Speaker 1: big one. Make sure and get in on the diamond circle.
- 11:24Speaker 1: It's a great place to get additional content. Follow me
- 11:26Speaker 1: out there on x at Paul Baron. We'll catch you
