Transcript
- 0:17Speaker 1: Hey, Hurdler's Emily Abaudi here bringing you another installment of
- 0:21Speaker 1: five Minute Friday from Hurdle. I feel like it's been
- 0:25Speaker 1: a while since I just gave a little bit of
- 0:28Speaker 1: background on Hurdle. I started the podcast at the end
- 0:31Speaker 1: of twenty seventeen beginning of twenty eighteen. It was something
- 0:37Speaker 1: I had dreamed about for a while. I knew that
- 0:39Speaker 1: I wanted to start a podcast, but didn't entirely know
- 0:43Speaker 1: what I wanted it to be about. I knew that
- 0:46Speaker 1: my bread and butter as a journalist and a thirty
- 0:49Speaker 1: something woman living here in New York City was health
- 0:53Speaker 1: and fitness content, and I wanted to intertwine that with
- 0:57Speaker 1: my passions for entrepreneurship and female empowerment and all that goodness.
- 1:03Speaker 1: And thus, after going through a personal crisis of sorts
- 1:07Speaker 1: and sitting on my couch staring at a friend saying
- 1:10Speaker 1: the sentence, I just want to get over this Hurdle,
- 1:14Speaker 1: it all sort of clicked, and a few months later
- 1:18Speaker 1: Hurdle was born, and since then one hundred and twenty
- 1:21Speaker 1: eight plus guested episodes later, a podcast that started by
- 1:26Speaker 1: weekly on Mondays now launches three times each week, and
- 1:30Speaker 1: I couldn't feel more lucky to have you listening to
- 1:36Speaker 1: me through your headphones, through your speakers, or however you're
- 1:40Speaker 1: getting your podcasts. This five minute Friday segment came to
- 1:44Speaker 1: be during the coronavirus pandemic as a way for me
- 1:48Speaker 1: to continually engage with my lovely hurdlers during this unforeseen
- 1:54Speaker 1: time in a fun new way. And so if you're
- 1:58Speaker 1: new to the segment, I tell a story, I share
- 2:01Speaker 1: a thought prompt, I offer up some of my content
- 2:04Speaker 1: highlights of the week, some cool things that I am
- 2:07Speaker 1: listening to, reading, what I'm buying, etc. And that's it.
- 2:12Speaker 1: Before we get into the swing of things today, I
- 2:14Speaker 1: do want to take a moment to talk about my
- 2:16Speaker 1: sponsor Beam. If you've never heard of Beam, you need
- 2:19Speaker 1: to stop what you're doing and listen to this. A
- 2:21Speaker 1: Beam is a Boston based CBD company that's making waves
- 2:25Speaker 1: in the wellness industry by offering products that combine THHC
- 2:29Speaker 1: free CBD with other high quality ingredients. It was founded
- 2:33Speaker 1: by two ex professional athletes who you have heard from
- 2:36Speaker 1: on the show before. They are amazing guys and they
- 2:40Speaker 1: created this company because they wanted everyone to be able
- 2:42Speaker 1: to experience what better really feels like, whether you are
- 2:46Speaker 1: sore or stressed. CBD is key for recovery and self care.
- 2:51Speaker 1: I am big on their Dream product. It comes in
- 2:54Speaker 1: a CBD capsule or powder and I just get better,

- 3:28Speaker 1: stick story thing, I was folding laundry yesterday which was
- 3:36Speaker 1: way too long, overdue to be done, overdue to be done.
- 3:40Speaker 1: You know what I'm getting at here? Anyway, I'm folding
- 3:42Speaker 1: laundry in my bedroom yesterday, and I was just thinking
- 3:45Speaker 1: about this time last year and what was going on.
- 3:49Speaker 1: It was a friend of mine's birthday, and I was
- 3:52Speaker 1: just reflecting on where him and I were at this
- 3:55Speaker 1: time last year. We were actually traveling at Brooks Headquarters
- 4:00Speaker 1: in Washington, and so I was thinking about everything that
- 4:04Speaker 1: was going on in twenty nineteen in September and how
- 4:07Speaker 1: crazy it was. I think about giving a talk to
- 4:11Speaker 1: an amphitheater of five hundred women. I think about running
- 4:14Speaker 1: twenty two miles this week in preparation for the Chicago Marathon.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I think about one particular date I went on to
- 4:21Speaker 1: eat Ramen. I think about going to hot yoga at
- 4:24Speaker 1: lions Den and going by myself in the middle of
- 4:27Speaker 1: a workday to go see Britney runs a marathon. What
- 4:31Speaker 1: else I think about? Oh, I remember signing this really
- 4:34Speaker 1: big contract to work with a brand that I had
- 4:36Speaker 1: been dreaming of working with as Emily the entrepreneur and
- 4:40Speaker 1: not Emily the journalist anyway. I mean, I think about life,
- 4:44Speaker 1: and life was a lot. But I was good at
- 4:48Speaker 1: a lot. You know, I've always kind of been good
- 4:50Speaker 1: at a lot. I prided myself on it really was.
- 4:53Speaker 1: I was good at finding some semblance of balance despite
- 4:59Speaker 1: waking up at five point thirty and running amok in
- 5:02Speaker 1: this city. I think about that time in my life
- 5:06Speaker 1: before COVID, and there have been times in the past
- 5:10Speaker 1: six months or so where I've craved that life. I've
- 5:13Speaker 1: craved the hectic early mornings and the treadmill sprints and
- 5:17Speaker 1: the you know, the disheveled scene that would be my apartment.
- 5:21Speaker 1: The night before I was getting on an early flight
- 5:24Speaker 1: with my waste suitcase on the ground, and just like
- 5:26Speaker 1: thinking about the three hours of sleep that I was
- 5:29Speaker 1: going to get and how tired I would be in
- 5:31Speaker 1: the next day I got. I craved, you know, the
- 5:34Speaker 1: excitement of big meetings in person, and like unnecessary but
- 5:38Speaker 1: necessary amounts of eye contact that feel slightly uncomfortable. I
- 5:44Speaker 1: craved using my Delta app on my phone, and of
- 5:48Speaker 1: course hugs and handshakes and high fives and and just
- 5:52Speaker 1: what was you know. I say all this because recently,
- 5:57Speaker 1: and I think maybe this goes hand in hand with
- 5:59Speaker 1: Real the book Mindset by Carol Dweck, which was Hurdle's
- 6:03Speaker 1: book club pick for this month. I realize that I am,
- 6:09Speaker 1: despite missing that stuff and reflecting on that time in
- 6:14Speaker 1: my life, not saying that with this idea that it'll
- 6:17Speaker 1: never get back to being that way, but just I
- 6:21Speaker 1: feel really grateful that this year hasn't been like that.
- 6:25Speaker 1: And don't get me wrong, I mean this year has
- 6:27Speaker 1: been hard as all hell, so hard, but if this
- 6:33Speaker 1: year didn't happen this way, I wouldn't be who I am.
- 6:38Speaker 1: And a lot of amazing things have happened. I've had
- 6:43Speaker 1: a big year personally and professionally, and I do understand
- 6:47Speaker 1: that it's my quote unquote growth mindset that makes me
- 6:50Speaker 1: think of this year this way and reflect on it positively.
- 6:54Speaker 1: But I have been able to grow a lot of
- 6:56Speaker 1: been able to make some really important, valuable connections. I've
- 7:00Speaker 1: been able to walk away from some things that I'm
- 7:04Speaker 1: not exactly sure I would have had the guts to
- 7:06Speaker 1: do otherwise. I've had some wins in my work. I've
- 7:10Speaker 1: had some growth with the podcast. I've been able to
- 7:13Speaker 1: set boundaries that literally in my life I have never
- 7:17Speaker 1: ever been successful at setting before. And yeah, like it's different,
- 7:23Speaker 1: But what I've come to understand and really appreciate lately
- 7:27Speaker 1: is that different isn't bad. It's just that it's different,
- 7:32Speaker 1: and lately, honestly, different just makes me feel pretty lucky.
- 7:38Speaker 1: And So my prompt for you this week is, what
- 7:41Speaker 1: is one thing that happened in the past month that
- 7:44Speaker 1: you did not expect but you're better for Again, what
- 7:49Speaker 1: is one thing that happened in the past month that
- 7:52Speaker 1: you didn't expect, but you are better. For Highlights of
- 7:57Speaker 1: the week, links to all of this goodness all are
- 8:00Speaker 1: in the show notes. Listen my good friend Ali Feller
- 8:04Speaker 1: Ali on the Run episode two seventy nine with Justin Grinwald.
- 8:10Speaker 1: I adore Ali. We text often, We've been on each
- 8:14Speaker 1: other's shows before, and I really loved her interview with
- 8:18Speaker 1: Justin this week. He's a doctor, he's an ultrarunner, he's
- 8:22Speaker 1: an avid chaser of the commonly adored fkt's that's Fastest
- 8:28Speaker 1: Known times, and he's also known as the husband to
- 8:33Speaker 1: the late Gabe Grinwald, who passed away last year after
- 8:37Speaker 1: a lengthy battle with rare cancer. Justin gets really vulnerable
- 8:44Speaker 1: in this episode, and I love Ali's interview style and
- 8:47Speaker 1: how she asks him tough questions and allows him to
- 8:52Speaker 1: take his time to get to his thoughtful, open, honest questions.
- 8:59Speaker 1: And I'm so grateful for their conversation because I think
- 9:02Speaker 1: it's important he opens up about finding love after loss
- 9:07Speaker 1: and what's going on in his life. And I just
- 9:09Speaker 1: highly encourage you all to definitely give it a listen.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Next up, listen, I can't believe I'm saying this out loud.
- 9:17Speaker 1: Dynamite by BTS. Okay, So here's the thing. I am
- 9:21Speaker 1: not a BTS fan, not at all, but they are
- 9:25Speaker 1: certainly culturally relevant if you haven't heard of them. They're
- 9:29Speaker 1: a K pop band with an insane obscene amount of
- 9:33Speaker 1: fans and this is their first new song that's in
- 9:38Speaker 1: full English, and so I just feel like it's got
- 9:41Speaker 1: a big energy. People are all about it and right now, like,
- 9:45Speaker 1: if there's something that can bring this heightened mood to
- 9:49Speaker 1: the masses, why not. Okay, highlight sign up one million
- 9:56Speaker 1: miles for justice. Y'all were here for phase one of
- 10:00Speaker 1: this challenge and it is back and the Hurdler's team
- 10:04Speaker 1: is back in full force. We had over one hundred
- 10:07Speaker 1: people sign up and donate in the first phase of
- 10:10Speaker 1: this challenge, and now it would mean the world to
- 10:14Speaker 1: me if we could come together and do it again.
- 10:17Speaker 1: You can walk, you can run, you can bike, you
- 10:20Speaker 1: can earn these miles however you want. This time around,
- 10:24Speaker 1: the proceeds are going to the Children's Defense Fund, which
- 10:28Speaker 1: is a national child advocacy organization that works to uplift
- 10:33Speaker 1: all children of color. Head on over to one the

- 11:27Speaker 1: to mention, as today is the anniversary of the September
- 11:32Speaker 1: eleventh attacks, that my heart, being a New Yorker, is
- 11:36Speaker 1: here and with all of the families that lost loved
- 11:39Speaker 1: ones on that day, I say it often stronger together.
- 11:44Speaker 1: I'm grateful for this community. I am here for this community,
