- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, it's your person, Michelle, probably, and I'm back. I
- 0:05Speaker 1: know it doesn't seem like it's been a long time
- 0:07Speaker 1: to you, but for me, between recording episodes two and
- 0:11Speaker 1: three was a really long time. How long? I actually
- 0:14Speaker 1: don't know because I wasn't paying attention. I just know
- 0:18Speaker 1: it was a long time. I just haven't had like
- 0:20Speaker 1: a ton of time to just sit down and actually
- 0:23Speaker 1: record this episode. So it's a little weird because I
- 0:25Speaker 1: started writing the notes for episode four already before recording this,
- 0:29Speaker 1: and I don't like doing that because I get kind
- 0:30Speaker 1: of confused, but whatever. It's going to be fine. Everything's
- 0:34Speaker 1: fine or something. I don't know. So yeah, again, I'm
- 0:39Speaker 1: still a little bit in the past for you. You know,
- 0:41Speaker 1: everything's already like moving into October, and we're already partially
- 0:46Speaker 1: almost halfway all the way sometime through October, and I'm
- 0:49Speaker 1: here sitting at the end of September just going like,
- 0:52Speaker 1: must be nice. I don't know why it would be nice,
- 0:56Speaker 1: but I hope it's nice. I hope October is going super,
- 0:59Speaker 1: super good. But it means I don't have a lot
- 1:01Speaker 1: to tell you because it's happened so long ago. So
- 1:05Speaker 1: for a second there, I had this whole big section
- 1:07Speaker 1: in here that I just cut out because I got really, really,
- 1:10Speaker 1: really embarrassed about it. So I'm just going to say
- 1:12Speaker 1: it again, apparently, but with less content. Basically, I accidentally
- 1:16Speaker 1: ended up reading or I'm in the middle of reading
- 1:19Speaker 1: this really intense Banana Fish fanfic on, you know, Archive
- 1:26Speaker 1: of Our Own, AO3 or whatever people call it. And
- 1:29Speaker 1: it's like destroying my life. And I just needed to
- 1:32Speaker 1: tell somebody that. It's not like I'm not telling people,
- 1:35Speaker 1: but I have to be really careful what I say
- 1:37Speaker 1: because it's just horrible, like totally horrible and takes place
- 1:41Speaker 1: in the past and shit's real bad. And yeah, it's
- 1:45Speaker 1: like it's keeping me up at night and making me
- 1:48Speaker 1: like rock and stare off into space and stuff. So
- 1:51Speaker 1: I just wanted to tell you for some reason, but
- 1:55Speaker 1: I'm not even going to tell you what it's called
- 1:57Speaker 1: because I feel so embarrassed about all of this. But
- 1:59Speaker 1: if you want to read a really, really fucked up
- 2:02Speaker 1: Banana Fish fanfic, fucking email me and we'll talk about it. Otherwise, yeah,
- 2:08Speaker 1: no more talking about that. Let's talk about number six,
- 2:11Speaker 1: episode three, because that's what we want to discuss because
- 2:15Speaker 1: that's why we're here probably. So episode three is called
- 2:20Speaker 1: Life and Death. which sounds like it's going to be
- 2:22Speaker 1: a really dire, important episode. I feel like they might
- 2:26Speaker 1: be overselling it a little bit, but let's see. If
- 2:30Speaker 1: you remember from last episode, at the very end, Shion
- 2:34Speaker 1: and Nezumi had emerged from the sewers, which looked way
- 2:37Speaker 1: too clean. And Shion had caught a glimpse of the
- 2:40Speaker 1: skyline with the slums and then industrial shit behind it
- 2:45Speaker 1: and then the giant wall. And Nezumi said something like,
- 2:48Speaker 1: what did he say? Welcome to reality. And that was it.
- 2:52Speaker 1: So we start, actually, we start almost exactly there. So
- 2:56Speaker 1: good job. I like when we can just pick up
- 2:59Speaker 1: on things. So the episode starts with us fading into
- 3:03Speaker 1: like a wasteland with like rubble. And I don't know,
- 3:06Speaker 1: there's like structures. And I can't really tell what they are.
- 3:09Speaker 1: I think maybe they're like chimneys kind of like sticking
- 3:13Speaker 1: up out of the rubble, which would make sense because
- 3:15Speaker 1: that happens sometimes. And you know why it happens? because
- 3:20Speaker 1: so like you have a house with a chimney, obviously,
- 3:23Speaker 1: if you don't have a house with a chimney, this
- 3:24Speaker 1: doesn't work. But if you have especially an older house
- 3:27Speaker 1: with a chimney, the chimney is not connected to the
- 3:31Speaker 1: house's foundation. Chimneys typically have their own foundations. So if
- 3:36Speaker 1: a house falls down, that doesn't necessarily mean that the
- 3:39Speaker 1: chimney will fall down. And if the chimney starts to
- 3:42Speaker 1: look like it's going to fall down, The house will
- 3:44Speaker 1: not save it. That's not how you fix a chimney.
- 3:47Speaker 1: You don't just tie it to the house. You have
- 3:49Speaker 1: to fix the footing. Please. You have no idea how
- 3:53Speaker 1: many chimneys I've seen that I'm scared of that they're
- 3:55Speaker 1: going to fall down on the house or on like
- 3:57Speaker 1: the sidewalk or something. So, you know, if you have
- 4:00Speaker 1: a chimney in a place where you live, please take
- 4:03Speaker 1: a second. And I'll actually stop here for a second.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Go outside. Look at the chimney. Really good. And I
- 4:11Speaker 1: want to know. Does it look straight to you? Does
- 4:15Speaker 1: it look okay? Is it leaning slightly? If it's leaning,
- 4:20Speaker 1: oh my God, you need to call someone right now.
- 4:24Speaker 1: If it's not, high five. Yeah, so I'll wait. Are
- 4:32Speaker 1: you done? Okay, cool. So how was it? You can
- 4:36Speaker 1: actually write to me if you want and tell me
- 4:37Speaker 1: about your chimney. I am so odd. but I would
- 4:41Speaker 1: love to know about your chimney. You could send me
- 4:43Speaker 1: pictures of your chimney and I could tell you what's
- 4:46Speaker 1: wrong with it. That would be so much fun. I
- 4:50Speaker 1: don't know why that would be fun, but oh my God,
- 4:54Speaker 1: let's get back on track. So chimneys are sticking up
- 4:59Speaker 1: out of the ground and it's night now. I believe
- 5:01Speaker 1: the sun was going down in the last episode. So
- 5:03Speaker 1: that makes sense. We get a shot of stairs leading
- 5:08Speaker 1: down to what I guess is probably a basement, like
- 5:11Speaker 1: under a destroyed house. At the bottom of the stairs,
- 5:14Speaker 1: there's an arched entryway and it takes them into a
- 5:18Speaker 1: long brick hallway with lots of doors like on either side.
- 5:23Speaker 1: And it's very dimly lit. This is interesting because this
- 5:26Speaker 1: is not what it looks like in the manga or
- 5:29Speaker 1: in the light novel. Nezumi does not just have a
- 5:32Speaker 1: regular door as far as I'm aware. Or at least
- 5:35Speaker 1: his door is behind something. It's like a there's like
- 5:37Speaker 1: a secret passage, which is pretty cool. But there's not
- 5:40Speaker 1: one here for some reason. Anyway, we go from that
- 5:43Speaker 1: hallway to just Shion looking at bookshelves. He gasps. I
- 5:49Speaker 1: guess they're in a room now. And he's like, are
- 5:51Speaker 1: these all filled with books? He looks around at the many,
- 5:55Speaker 1: many bookshelves like they're, you know, pretty much against every
- 5:58Speaker 1: wall and probably like standing in between walls and shit.
- 6:02Speaker 1: And he hears a squeak and turns. He sees a
- 6:04Speaker 1: white mouse sitting on a red book, like near an,
- 6:08Speaker 1: like a lantern, maybe like an oil type lantern that's
- 6:11Speaker 1: on a table. The mouse squeaks again and it hops
- 6:14Speaker 1: off the book and we see that the book is Macbeth.
- 6:17Speaker 1: So I'll just stop there and say, huh, if Macbeth exists,
- 6:22Speaker 1: it means that this is set in our world. So
- 6:25Speaker 1: I assume this is just very, very far in the future. Okay,
- 6:30Speaker 1: now we know. Shion walks over to the table and
- 6:33Speaker 1: picks up the book and we get a better shot
- 6:37Speaker 1: of the room it's lit by two lanterns and aside
- 6:40Speaker 1: from just like shelves and shelves of books there is
- 6:44Speaker 1: a kind of like a couch a table in front
- 6:47Speaker 1: of it an upright piano like some boxes just kind
- 6:51Speaker 1: of in a stack on the floor and we see
- 6:53Speaker 1: that one of them's filled with like what looked like
- 6:55Speaker 1: scrolls the walls are concrete and there are like papers
- 7:00Speaker 1: taped to them like We can't see what they say
- 7:03Speaker 1: or anything, but they obviously say something. Shion opens Macbeth
- 7:08Speaker 1: and he like flips to the middle of it, which
- 7:10Speaker 1: is not how you read a book. Just kind of
- 7:12Speaker 1: looks at it. The mouse climbs onto Shion's shoulder and
- 7:15Speaker 1: it squeaks again because it's trying to talk to him.
- 7:18Speaker 1: And Shion like looks at it and smiles and is like,
- 7:21Speaker 1: do you want me to read to you? I don't
- 7:23Speaker 1: know if the mouse understands. But if it does, I
- 7:27Speaker 1: would hope you would teach it to read too. The
- 7:29Speaker 1: mouse squeaks like maybe yes. And Shion begins, here's the
- 7:34Speaker 1: smell of the blood still. We see books on the shelves,
- 7:38Speaker 1: the camera is panning across them, and we get some titles, Othello,
- 7:42Speaker 1: The Merchant of Venice, A Midsummer's Night Dream, The Divine Comedy.
- 7:46Speaker 1: So again, this is probably the future, I guess, because
- 7:49Speaker 1: this is definitely our timeline. We cut to the piano
- 7:52Speaker 1: again for a second, and Shion continues, all the perfumes
- 7:56Speaker 1: in Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. Oh, oh, oh,
- 8:00Speaker 1: what a sigh is there. We cut back to the
- 8:03Speaker 1: papers on the wall and we see that there's sheet music. Yay!
- 8:07Speaker 1: Shion continues. The heart is surely charged. Nezumi is now
- 8:11Speaker 1: standing in the doorway with a towel over his head
- 8:13Speaker 1: and not wearing a shirt. And he says, an almost
- 8:17Speaker 1: charmingly monotonous way of reading you have. Shion looks over.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Nezumi continues. You're going to make Macbeth cry. Shion looks
- 8:26Speaker 1: at the mouse and like taps it on the nose
- 8:29Speaker 1: and says, is your name Macbeth? Aw, come on, you
- 8:33Speaker 1: saw the title of the book? Nezumi walks past him
- 8:37Speaker 1: and he's like, it's the title of that book. Do
- 8:39Speaker 1: you not know Shakespeare either? Shion frowns, a little embarrassed.
- 8:44Speaker 1: He probably should be. And Nezumi sits down on the bed,
- 8:47Speaker 1: drying his hair with the towel. Shion says, I was
- 8:51Speaker 1: never encouraged to pursue artistic influence. Nezumi's like, yeah, okay.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Shion bends forward to set the book down and then
- 8:59Speaker 1: stops abruptly. And we flash to a really bright image
- 9:02Speaker 1: of him, like super young, sitting in his mom's lap
- 9:05Speaker 1: on a bench, holding a book. It's a big sakura
- 9:09Speaker 1: tree in the background. And we hear him say, but
- 9:13Speaker 1: when I was a kid, mom used to read to me.
- 9:17Speaker 1: We cut to a page of the book that they're
- 9:18Speaker 1: reading and it has like a picture in it. And
- 9:21Speaker 1: I won't tell you what the picture is because he's
- 9:22Speaker 1: going to explain it. Shion continues. Yeah, there was a
- 9:26Speaker 1: statue of a prince erected in a city and a
- 9:28Speaker 1: swallow was nearby. The book closes. We see the cover
- 9:32Speaker 1: is The Happy Prince and Other Stories by Oscar Wilde.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Nezumi says, The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde. He likes reading, huh?
- 9:41Speaker 1: He stands and extends his left arm upwards. and puts
- 9:46Speaker 1: his right hand to his chest, and very dramatically says,
- 9:49Speaker 1: to those in despair, I give my ruby. He puts
- 9:53Speaker 1: his hands over his face. My sapphire! He hugs himself.
- 9:57Speaker 1: My gold leaf! Sheehan stares at him like what the
- 10:02Speaker 1: fuck is happening and he makes some like little noises
- 10:04Speaker 1: and nezumi now straightens up and laughs we're seeing him
- 10:08Speaker 1: from behind and we can see because he's not wearing
- 10:10Speaker 1: a shirt the scars on his back which are pretty
- 10:12Speaker 1: big he starts to put his hair up he continues
- 10:16Speaker 1: It's a story about the hypocrisy and self-satisfaction of humans
- 10:20Speaker 1: that know not of true sorrow. He smirks. It's perfectly
- 10:24Speaker 1: suited for you. Jerk. Then we go to the opening theme. Yay.
- 10:29Speaker 1: But that was a really shitty thing to say. Yeah.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I'll talk about it later, I think. Back from the opening,
- 10:36Speaker 1: we see a room that seems like it's probably a bathroom?
- 10:40Speaker 1: It has a tiled floor, but there are a lot
- 10:41Speaker 1: of missing tiles. The walls are concrete because it's a basement,
- 10:45Speaker 1: but they have like a brick backsplash, you know, coming
- 10:48Speaker 1: up halfway. It has like two huge tubs in it.
- 10:53Speaker 1: They're kind of like those built-in tubs, you know, like
- 10:56Speaker 1: they're part of the floor. I guess they're made out
- 10:58Speaker 1: of the same tile. You know what I'm talking about
- 11:00Speaker 1: or something? And they are both huge. And one of
- 11:05Speaker 1: them has water in it because it's a tub. And
- 11:07Speaker 1: the other one just has like rubble and stuff. Like
- 11:10Speaker 1: I don't know. Off to the side, there's a wood
- 11:13Speaker 1: stove water heater that seems to be supplying the tub
- 11:17Speaker 1: directly with hot water, which is pretty cool, actually. Shion
- 11:22Speaker 1: pops out of the water in the tub that has
- 11:24Speaker 1: water in it and sighs. His eyes are closed. We
- 11:27Speaker 1: flash to some shots of the desolation outside and then
- 11:30Speaker 1: back to him and then to a black spot on
- 11:34Speaker 1: his neck. Um, fuck. We hear Nezumi say, you want
- 11:38Speaker 1: to contact your mom? Shion is standing in the room.
- 11:42Speaker 1: Nezumi is lying on the bed with a book. I
- 11:44Speaker 1: cannot read what the title says. Shion's like, she's probably worried.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Nezumi looks back at the book and is like, you're
- 11:52Speaker 1: going to be crushed. Shion says, huh? Nezumi is still
- 11:57Speaker 1: looking at the book, by the way, not paying much
- 11:59Speaker 1: attention to Shion and says, memories, attachments, regret. He flips
- 12:04Speaker 1: the pages. If you're carrying such worthless things around, they'll
- 12:07Speaker 1: crush you eventually. Your mom's no different. toss her aside. Dude,
- 12:12Speaker 1: that's just not accurate. Whatever. Shion's like, why would you?
- 12:19Speaker 1: Nezumi cuts him off. Because it's dangerous. We cut to
- 12:22Speaker 1: a flashback of when, you know, Shion had thrown his
- 12:26Speaker 1: wrist cuff off and it's like sailing through the air
- 12:27Speaker 1: in slow motion. Nezumi continues, you threw away your number
- 12:32Speaker 1: six ID because it was dangerous. We cut to Shion looking,
- 12:35Speaker 1: you know, justifiably a little upset and then We see
- 12:39Speaker 1: the book that Nezumi's reading in the foreground, and I
- 12:41Speaker 1: can see that the title is All's Well That Ends Well,
- 12:44Speaker 1: so I guess it's a Shakespeare play. Nezumi continues, the
- 12:48Speaker 1: feelings you hold for someone are the same. They imprison you,
- 12:51Speaker 1: bind you, trip you up. Shion looks down. That's why
- 12:55Speaker 1: you say to toss them aside? Nezumi's like, exactly. Shion
- 12:59Speaker 1: looks back up at him, frustrated, and he says, then
- 13:03Speaker 1: what about you? Exactly! Um, he sounds like he's kind
- 13:07Speaker 1: of a hypocrite, right? Nezumi's like, me? Shion says. You
- 13:12Speaker 1: risked danger in order to save me, right? What you're
- 13:15Speaker 1: saying and what you do are different. Yeah. Nezumi shuts
- 13:19Speaker 1: the book abruptly and Shion steps back. Yeah, I think
- 13:22Speaker 1: he's got an anger issue. Nezumi's like, you really have
- 13:25Speaker 1: a terrible personality. We're focused on Shion's profile right now,
- 13:29Speaker 1: so we can't see Nezumi. But we do hear rustling.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Shion looks up, like maybe Nezumi's standing now. and Nezumi
- 13:37Speaker 1: grabs him by the collar and pulls him up. You
- 13:40Speaker 1: saved my life, so I return the favor. That's all
- 13:43Speaker 1: it was. Shion looks kind of frustrated or hurt, and
- 13:48Speaker 1: then suddenly his eyes widen and he gasps. Oh, it's true.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Nezumi's like, huh? Shion says. You really did get taller
- 13:56Speaker 1: than me. Nezumi releases Shion. Jeez. He walks back towards
- 14:02Speaker 1: the bed. Do something about that airhead of yours. Shion
- 14:06Speaker 1: looks confused. This is a whole weird situation. So I
- 14:09Speaker 1: understand Nezumi's, yeah, yeah. Trying to kind of intimidate someone
- 14:14Speaker 1: and they're just like, oh, you really are taller than me.
- 14:16Speaker 1: I don't have anything going on in my brain. Yeah.
- 14:20Speaker 1: A black mouse like comes and sits on Shion's shoulder
- 14:23Speaker 1: and squeaks at him. And Shion looks at it and
- 14:25Speaker 1: smiles and says, did you tell Nezumi I was in danger?
- 14:28Speaker 1: He pets its head. Thank you. The mouse squeaks. Nezumi,
- 14:32Speaker 1: who's sitting on the bed again, lifts up a different
- 14:34Speaker 1: black mouse and says, that's what this guy's for. He's
- 14:37Speaker 1: got a number of internal sensors. It's like a little
- 14:40Speaker 1: robot mouse. Remember I said that there was a mouse
- 14:42Speaker 1: that had like red eyes, but it didn't look right? Yeah,
- 14:45Speaker 1: it's this mouse. Little red eyes and not real, but
- 14:48Speaker 1: basically looks real. Nezumi continues, he can even walk around
- 14:52Speaker 1: the city to a certain extent. Shion bends down to
- 14:55Speaker 1: look and says, he's a robot? Wow, he seems so alive.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Nezumi's like, He was only keeping an eye on you
- 15:02Speaker 1: on the side. Yeah, I think that was his main job,
- 15:05Speaker 1: but whatever. I've been using this little guy this whole
- 15:08Speaker 1: time to search for number six's Achilles tendon. Shion looks up.
- 15:12Speaker 1: Achilles tendon? He gasps and stands. Nezumi, you've been watching
- 15:17Speaker 1: number six this whole time. Have you noticed anything strange?
- 15:20Speaker 1: Nezumi's like, strange? Shion says, for instance, something to do
- 15:25Speaker 1: with a wasp or something like that? Nezumi's like, hey,
- 15:29Speaker 1: that's more your field of study. He puts the mouse
- 15:32Speaker 1: down and is about to lie down, I think, but
- 15:35Speaker 1: then he turns back. Hey, Shion, what's wrong? Shion's like, what?
- 15:40Speaker 1: Nezumi says, your hands. Shion lifts his hands and his
- 15:45Speaker 1: palms have black spots all over them. He begins to shake.
- 15:49Speaker 1: What the fuck is this? He gasps, reaches for his
- 15:52Speaker 1: neck and gasps again. I assume he can feel that
- 15:56Speaker 1: spot on his neck now. He lowers his hands, eyes wide, sweating,
- 16:00Speaker 1: and he closes his eyes. And then he just starts
- 16:04Speaker 1: like screaming, like full on screaming with his hand on
- 16:08Speaker 1: his neck. He backs up into a bookshelf, the books fall,
- 16:11Speaker 1: and he collapses onto the floor. Nezumi's like, Shion! He
- 16:15Speaker 1: bends over and puts his hand on Shion's thigh. Hey,
- 16:18Speaker 1: what's going on? Shion! Shion is on his side now
- 16:21Speaker 1: on the ground, shaking his Hands on his neck still.
- 16:24Speaker 1: He says, my neck. Nezumi's like, your neck? He looks
- 16:29Speaker 1: at it, you know, sees the black spot thing and gasps. That's,
- 16:34Speaker 1: Shion says, right there. Cut it out, please. Nezumi's like,
- 16:38Speaker 1: I don't have any anesthetic. Shion says, I don't need it. Hurry.
- 16:43Speaker 1: We cut to the ground as the box hits the
- 16:45Speaker 1: floor and the black mouse is running in circles near
- 16:47Speaker 1: Nezumi's feet, which we can see. And another box falls
- 16:51Speaker 1: on the ground and we hear Nezumi say, There it is.
- 16:54Speaker 1: We cut to a first aid kit being opened on
- 16:55Speaker 1: the bed. Shion is now, you know, laying on his
- 16:58Speaker 1: stomach on the bed with Nezumi kneeling on the bed
- 17:01Speaker 1: next to him, getting something out of the first aid kit.
- 17:04Speaker 1: He says, wait a sec, I'll cut it out right away.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Shion this entire time has just been crying out in pain,
- 17:10Speaker 1: by the way. His fists are tight and his teeth
- 17:12Speaker 1: are clenched. And slowly he starts to sink into the mattress.
- 17:17Speaker 1: Like all the way in to the mattress. We see
- 17:22Speaker 1: his naked body floating through like a reddish yellow swirly place.
- 17:28Speaker 1: He starts to like free fall in keyframes. We cut
- 17:31Speaker 1: to his profile on a bright red background as something
- 17:34Speaker 1: spears like right through his head. At this point, in reality,
- 17:37Speaker 1: his body jolts, causing Nezumi to like freak out a
- 17:40Speaker 1: little and pull back. Shion grabs his head and curls
- 17:44Speaker 1: up and just starts screaming again. This is really bad.
- 17:47Speaker 1: And he is just writhing and screaming again. Nezumi looks worried. Yeah.
- 17:54Speaker 1: But then he raises the scalpel, determined to cut this
- 17:56Speaker 1: whatever the hell it is out of him. He puts
- 17:58Speaker 1: his hand on Shion's head and says, Shion, hold it together.
- 18:02Speaker 1: I don't really know if that helps someone who is
- 18:04Speaker 1: screaming and writhing in pain, but you're trying. We cut
- 18:08Speaker 1: to a close-up shot of just Shion's eye. It's closed
- 18:11Speaker 1: as it pops open. Blackness consuming the skin around it.
- 18:15Speaker 1: We see him on a red background screaming in pain
- 18:18Speaker 1: as the black travels down through his naked form. I
- 18:21Speaker 1: guess this is in the kind of dream hallucination he's having.
- 18:25Speaker 1: In reality, Nezumi is using his leg and hand to
- 18:28Speaker 1: hold down Shion's leg and arm. And they look real veiny.
- 18:34Speaker 1: I mean, Shion's not Nezumi's. As he like just twitches and,
- 18:38Speaker 1: you know, basically convulses. We see a pink line traveling
- 18:42Speaker 1: down his arm like it's like a thick, maybe like
- 18:45Speaker 1: the width of a thumb line. It's just like traveling
- 18:48Speaker 1: down his arm and onto his hand. We see a
- 18:51Speaker 1: pink line now forming on Shion's cheek, which is also
- 18:54Speaker 1: kind of veiny. Shion blinks his eyes open and there
- 18:57Speaker 1: are tears in his eyes. And he says, Nezumi, that's enough.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Nezumi's like, what? Shion says, just kill me. Nezumi's like,
- 19:08Speaker 1: fuck that. Don't cause someone all this trouble and then
- 19:11Speaker 1: die without a fight. Shion looks unmistakably horrible. And he's
- 19:18Speaker 1: clenching his teeth now, trying not to cry, getting annoyed
- 19:21Speaker 1: that Nezumi doesn't want to die. Nezumi says, Shion, you
- 19:25Speaker 1: get it, right? Your mother would cry. Hey, we're going
- 19:28Speaker 1: to use that now? I thought we have to get
- 19:30Speaker 1: rid of attachments. Shion kind of gulps and closes his eyes.
- 19:35Speaker 1: We get a flashback of Karin at the bakery and
- 19:38Speaker 1: we hear Nezumi say, is it okay for you to
- 19:40Speaker 1: cause your mother such sadness? And what would that girl do?
- 19:43Speaker 1: The one named Safu or whatever. We see some shots
- 19:46Speaker 1: of Safu. Nezumi continues, have you forgotten your promise to
- 19:50Speaker 1: meet again two years from now? Even though you're completely clueless,
- 19:54Speaker 1: even though you don't know a thing about sex, books,
- 19:56Speaker 1: or fighting, you're okay with not living? Shion! Tears stream
- 20:00Speaker 1: across the bridge of Shion's nose. His eyes are closed tightly.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Nezumi continues. Open your eyes. Shion makes a fist. and slowly,
- 20:10Speaker 1: still whimpering, opens his eyes. Nezumi raises the scalpel again.
- 20:15Speaker 1: That's it, my clever one. I'm proud of you. Um, yeah,
- 20:20Speaker 1: I loved his voice actor there. That was great. We
- 20:25Speaker 1: see the blade as it cuts across the black spot
- 20:28Speaker 1: on Shion's neck. We get a shot of Nezumi looking
- 20:32Speaker 1: at something, I guess the spot on his neck, but
- 20:34Speaker 1: we can't see what's going on, which was very frustrating
- 20:37Speaker 1: to me. It's just like a shot of His face
- 20:39Speaker 1: and stuff. We cut to the lantern and then to
- 20:43Speaker 1: the three mice watching. Again, not seeing the actions that
- 20:45Speaker 1: are taking place. We hear Shion's intermittent gasping. We cut
- 20:50Speaker 1: now to Nezumi's hand as he puts the scalpel back
- 20:52Speaker 1: into the case. Yeah, it's clean. I guess he washed
- 20:56Speaker 1: it already. He pulls out the tweezers. There's a squelching
- 21:01Speaker 1: noise as Nezumi probably pulls it out. But again, we're
- 21:04Speaker 1: only seeing his face. Thanks. He lifts it. into view
- 21:08Speaker 1: so like the camera can see it now. And it
- 21:11Speaker 1: looks like a black larva thing, maybe. Nezumi looks at it,
- 21:16Speaker 1: looks like he's pretty disgusted, and he puts it down
- 21:19Speaker 1: and we fade to black. Next thing we see is
- 21:23Speaker 1: Shion laying in the bed on his back. We can't
- 21:27Speaker 1: see his eyes, but he's probably asleep, I would assume.
- 21:31Speaker 1: His neck is wrapped in gauze and Nezumi puts a
- 21:34Speaker 1: blanket over him, smiling like really sweetly, and he picks
- 21:38Speaker 1: up the plate with the black larva on it and
- 21:42Speaker 1: exhales shakily. We cut to some yellow weeds in a
- 21:45Speaker 1: crack in some stone blowing in the breeze. Nezumi walks
- 21:49Speaker 1: out through the rubble. He stops and he looks up
- 21:52Speaker 1: at the giant wall beyond the slums in the industrial
- 21:55Speaker 1: area and he says, just what is happening over there?
- 22:00Speaker 1: Then he smiles. Just you wait, number six. I'll cut
- 22:05Speaker 1: out the source of your disease. I think that was
- 22:08Speaker 1: a threat. Now we go to very normal looking buildings
- 22:12Speaker 1: that I think is an airport. It is. There's a
- 22:15Speaker 1: plane flying. On it, Saffu is sitting totally alone like
- 22:19Speaker 1: it looks like no one else is on this plane,
- 22:21Speaker 1: which is weird. Maybe people don't travel between cities very much. Anyway,
- 22:25Speaker 1: she's sitting there and we hear her grandma say, what's wrong?
- 22:28Speaker 1: You look so depressed. We cut to her grandma and
- 22:31Speaker 1: her in this field of like many, many different colored flowers,
- 22:35Speaker 1: all kind of in sections. It's very beautiful. Her grandma continues.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Are you not happy about studying abroad? Safu just looks
- 22:43Speaker 1: at the ground. Her grandma turns her motorized wheelchair towards Safu.
- 22:48Speaker 1: Is it about Shion? Safu gasps and looks at her.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Her grandma chuckles. It'll be fine. Two years will pass
- 22:55Speaker 1: before you know it. Okay, this was prior to, I guess,
- 22:58Speaker 1: everyone finding out that, you know, he was arrested. Safu
- 23:02Speaker 1: looks kind of worried for a second, and then she says, Grandma?
- 23:06Speaker 1: Her grandma's like, Plus, I've made so many friends. We
- 23:11Speaker 1: pan up and see that there's a large round building
- 23:13Speaker 1: past the fields of flowers. Her grandma continues, The Twilight
- 23:17Speaker 1: House really is a wonderful place. Yay! That's something good
- 23:22Speaker 1: at least. Her grandma holds out one of her knitting
- 23:25Speaker 1: needles to Safu and continues, so you go study. Don't
- 23:30Speaker 1: worry about a thing. We get to Safu and see
- 23:33Speaker 1: that her hands are curled around the knitting needle and
- 23:36Speaker 1: we hear her grandma say, no matter how far apart
- 23:39Speaker 1: we are, we're connected by our feelings. Safu looks up.
- 23:43Speaker 1: It seems like she's, you know, got her confidence back. Okay,
- 23:47Speaker 1: let me just stop there and say, what the fuck, grandma? Like,
- 23:51Speaker 1: it's a nice gesture to give your your grandchild one
- 23:54Speaker 1: of your knitting needles, but she likes to knit, right?
- 23:57Speaker 1: So that makes me uncomfortable that she'd be like, oh,
- 24:00Speaker 1: it's cool. You just have one of the things that
- 24:02Speaker 1: I use to make the things that make me feel
- 24:04Speaker 1: like I'm a productive member of society. I don't know.
- 24:08Speaker 1: But then again, I'm sure she can get other knitting needles.
- 24:10Speaker 1: I'm sure she's not condemned to a life of just
- 24:13Speaker 1: one knitting needle now. So maybe it's a really sweet gesture.
- 24:16Speaker 1: It is. It is. I'm just being weird. We cut
- 24:19Speaker 1: to the wasteland at night. It's partly cloudy, lots of stars.
- 24:23Speaker 1: And then to a table with a lantern on it.
- 24:26Speaker 1: We hear rustling and then walking and legs approach the table.
- 24:30Speaker 1: We hear Shion say, water. We see the lantern lift
- 24:33Speaker 1: up off the table and the legs walk off. We
- 24:37Speaker 1: cut to a cracked mirror on the wall. Shion passes
- 24:40Speaker 1: by it and he's behind the camera. So we only
- 24:44Speaker 1: see his reflection as he does. And after he passes,
- 24:48Speaker 1: he stops and walks back to the mirror. He sees
- 24:51Speaker 1: his reflection now and gasps. His hair is totally white.
- 24:55Speaker 1: And he says, no way. We get a close-up of
- 24:58Speaker 1: the reflection of his face. His eyes look panicked. And
- 25:02Speaker 1: then we hear a crash and the light goes out.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Did you just ruin the lantern? There's a stripe across
- 25:08Speaker 1: his cheek too, and he touches it. He says, what
- 25:12Speaker 1: the hell happened? He gasps and backs away from the
- 25:15Speaker 1: mirror and begins to take off his shirt. We cut
- 25:17Speaker 1: to the broken lantern on the floor as he breathes heavily,
- 25:20Speaker 1: just trying to get off his shirt and having trouble.
- 25:23Speaker 1: And then we see bandages fall to the floor. We
- 25:26Speaker 1: pan up on Shion and he's standing there just wearing
- 25:30Speaker 1: his underwear, which is black boxer briefs. Now you know.
- 25:34Speaker 1: The pink line snakes all the way around his leg
- 25:37Speaker 1: and then up his torso and then around his neck
- 25:41Speaker 1: and then onto his left cheek. He just kind of
- 25:43Speaker 1: freezes there in panic. And we hear Nezumi say, you're
- 25:47Speaker 1: waking up for the first time in three days. Shion
- 25:50Speaker 1: gasps and turns. Nezumi is standing in the doorway. He's
- 25:53Speaker 1: holding like a package or like a brown bag or something.
- 25:56Speaker 1: And he continues. The imprint only affected your skin. It
- 25:59Speaker 1: wasn't brought on by vein swelling. That's good, right? I
- 26:03Speaker 1: have no idea what that means or why you'd know that.
- 26:06Speaker 1: We see Shion's feet lean forward and then his knees
- 26:09Speaker 1: hit the ground hard. He wraps his arms tightly around
- 26:12Speaker 1: his chest and he says, I don't want this. Why
- 26:16Speaker 1: did this happen to me? Nezumi walks over. It's actually
- 26:21Speaker 1: quite alluring, you know. Shion continues. I don't want this.
- 26:25Speaker 1: I don't want this. Nezumi's like, just think of it
- 26:29Speaker 1: as a medal honoring your survival. Shion's like, it's payment.
- 26:34Speaker 1: He's still hugging himself tightly and his eyes are closed.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Yamase-san died while I lived. This is payment for that.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Nezumi is silent for a second and then he kneels
- 26:45Speaker 1: next to Shion. Raise your head. He waits for him
- 26:48Speaker 1: to do that, but he doesn't. Stop staring at the
- 26:51Speaker 1: floor and look at me. Shion just kind of shakes
- 26:54Speaker 1: and shrinks a little bit more. Nezumi grabs Shion by
- 26:57Speaker 1: the chin. Come on. Forces him to look at him.
- 27:00Speaker 1: I don't like that. Shion, are you having regrets? Shion's like,
- 27:05Speaker 1: about what? Nezumi says, the fact that you survived. Shion
- 27:10Speaker 1: makes kind of a pained expression. We see that he's
- 27:12Speaker 1: got like these intense dark bags under his eyes and
- 27:15Speaker 1: he just looks away. Nezumi continues. Are you thinking that
- 27:19Speaker 1: if you have to look like this that you'd be
- 27:20Speaker 1: better off dead? Answer me, Shion! There's a long pause.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Shion finally says, Nezumi, I want to go on living.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Nezumi stands. That's good enough. In this world, the winners
- 27:37Speaker 1: are those who survive. He walks over to a lantern
- 27:39Speaker 1: that's on some boxes. Don't go feeling guilty because you're alive.
- 27:44Speaker 1: He strikes a match on the sole of his boot,
- 27:46Speaker 1: which is pretty cool. If you have that much time
- 27:48Speaker 1: on your hands, he lights the lantern. Keep yourself alive
- 27:51Speaker 1: one day at a time, so you can remember those
- 27:54Speaker 1: who died. That's quite enough. Yeah, you're really giving me
- 27:58Speaker 1: conflicting information, Nezumi. Shion stares at him, looking kind of worried,
- 28:03Speaker 1: and a white mouse climbs onto Nezumi's shoulder, stands up
- 28:06Speaker 1: and squeaks. Nezumi turns his head to it, and the
- 28:09Speaker 1: mouse squeaks some more, and Nezumi nods to the mouse.
- 28:13Speaker 1: He turns to Shion. He said we should eat something. Really?
- 28:17Speaker 1: He lifts up the paper bag that he was holding.
- 28:19Speaker 1: Can you stomach anything? Shion's stomach grumbles and he looks
- 28:23Speaker 1: ashamed and blushes because I don't know why that happens
- 28:26Speaker 1: in anime so much. Nezumi chuckles. We cut to a
- 28:31Speaker 1: stew or soup. It's like things, but you can't tell
- 28:34Speaker 1: what the things are in like a white base being
- 28:37Speaker 1: mixed in a pot. Nezumi is stirring, obviously, and Shion
- 28:41Speaker 1: looks over and is like, what kind of soup is it?
- 28:44Speaker 1: Nezumi says, Macbeth soup. Shion's like, what's that? We cut
- 28:49Speaker 1: to a low shot of Nezumi stirring, looking evil. And
- 28:53Speaker 1: he says, eyeball of newt, frog's fingers, and bat wings
- 28:58Speaker 1: all boiled together in a pot. Shion's like, if that's
- 29:03Speaker 1: what's in it, I'll pass. Oh, come on. It's probably great.
- 29:07Speaker 1: We see that they're sitting on the couch and Nezumi
- 29:10Speaker 1: begins to ladle the soup into a bowl. I'm only kidding.
- 29:12Speaker 1: He holds it off to Shion. Relax and eat up.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Xian takes the bowl and brings it to his mouth.
- 29:18Speaker 1: He sets it down after, you know, sipping some of
- 29:21Speaker 1: it and says, it's delicious. We cut to just the
- 29:24Speaker 1: bowl and we fade to black. I believe this is
- 29:28Speaker 1: the commercial break. And then fade back into a plate
- 29:31Speaker 1: with a hand holding it and a dead black pupil
- 29:35Speaker 1: on it. It was kind of a nice transition. We
- 29:38Speaker 1: hear Shion say, it's in the pupil stage. That's what
- 29:41Speaker 1: I said. He's the one holding the plate. Most likely
- 29:44Speaker 1: a wasp. Nezumi says, you can tell? We get a
- 29:49Speaker 1: flashback to a very horrified Shion. And Shion says, I
- 29:54Speaker 1: saw a wasp emerge from Yamase-san's neck. Nezumi's like, A
- 29:58Speaker 1: wasp that acts as a parasite within the human body, huh?
- 30:02Speaker 1: By the way, when exactly were you implanted with that egg?
- 30:06Speaker 1: Shion shakes his head. I don't know. He looks back
- 30:09Speaker 1: at it. It definitely implants the egg without the host noticing,
- 30:12Speaker 1: then grows rapidly. You cut to a flashback of Yamase dying.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Shion continues. Then, after excreting some sort of substance, it
- 30:21Speaker 1: tries to kill the host. He furrows his brow. And
- 30:24Speaker 1: then Nezumi just starts to laugh. Shion looks over at
- 30:28Speaker 1: him surprised. Nezumi? Nezumi falls back on the bed laughing,
- 30:33Speaker 1: one of his hands on his head. He kind of
- 30:35Speaker 1: turns to the side and then just continues to laugh
- 30:38Speaker 1: until water is splashed onto his face. He sits up. Idiot,
- 30:43Speaker 1: what are you doing? I'm completely soaked now. Shion is
- 30:46Speaker 1: holding like a pitcher and he says, well, I thought
- 30:49Speaker 1: you'd gone hysterical or something. Nezumi stands. Why would you
- 30:54Speaker 1: even think that? Shion's like, But you just started laughing
- 30:58Speaker 1: out of nowhere. Nezumi sighs and sits back down on
- 31:01Speaker 1: the bed. I was laughing because what you were saying
- 31:04Speaker 1: was funny. Shion's like, it's funny? Nezumi says, come on.
- 31:11Speaker 1: That thing was developed by number six. We cut to
- 31:14Speaker 1: a shot of the city from, you know, high up
- 31:17Speaker 1: with the Moondrop building like right in front. The sky
- 31:19Speaker 1: is gray and there's like some kind of glitchiness to
- 31:22Speaker 1: it or like little black dots happening. We hear Nezumi say,
- 31:26Speaker 1: there's a mysterious man-eating wasp flying around a brand new city.
- 31:30Speaker 1: A red filter slowly kind of forms across the image.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Nezumi says, it's hilarious. Shion's like, it's not something you
- 31:39Speaker 1: should laugh about. More people will die. Nezumi's like, it's hilarious.
- 31:45Speaker 1: Shion gasps and flinches. Nezumi continues, let me tell you
- 31:49Speaker 1: something about that city. It won't accept anyone who doesn't
- 31:52Speaker 1: comply with complete obedience. He smirks. That's what happened to you, right?
- 31:56Speaker 1: We get a flashback to Shion swearing his loyalty to
- 31:59Speaker 1: an unchanging city from the last episode. Lots of flashbacks.
- 32:02Speaker 1: It's too early for all these flashbacks. We get a
- 32:05Speaker 1: shot of Nezumi framed by the light of the lantern.
- 32:08Speaker 1: It's pretty nice. And he says, it won't allow any
- 32:11Speaker 1: foreign substance. Those who disobey or contradict its philosophy. We
- 32:16Speaker 1: flashback to Nezumi being shot from episode one. So yeah,
- 32:19Speaker 1: really stretching that animation budget here. We only see one
- 32:22Speaker 1: of Nezumi's eyes now. The other side is blocked by
- 32:25Speaker 1: the fire of the lantern. Really cool. And his eye
- 32:28Speaker 1: narrows and he says, the city was established with that intention.
- 32:32Speaker 1: Shion's like, but Nezumi continues. And you're one of those
- 32:36Speaker 1: foreign substances, Shion. Shion gasps. I am? Um, what? Of
- 32:41Speaker 1: course you are. Nezumi's like, definitely. We flash back to
- 32:46Speaker 1: Shion patching up Nezumi from episode one. And we hear
- 32:49Speaker 1: Nezumi say, you sheltered a V.C., Held suspicion of data manipulation.
- 32:55Speaker 1: We've got a bunch of flashbacks from episodes one and two.
- 32:57Speaker 1: Somewhere in your heart, you felt deceit. We flash back
- 33:00Speaker 1: to him screaming on the balcony. Nezumi continues. And that's
- 33:05Speaker 1: why you were forced to disappear. Shion looks sad, like
- 33:09Speaker 1: he didn't know this for some reason. Nezumi lies on
- 33:12Speaker 1: his back and opens a book. Right now, the city
- 33:14Speaker 1: is trying to devour its population with man-eating wasps. Serves
- 33:18Speaker 1: him right. Shion's like, then we have to do something.
- 33:22Speaker 1: Nezumi smirks. That's impossible. Shion slumps over and stares at
- 33:27Speaker 1: the floor, then gasps and straightens up. I survived! He
- 33:31Speaker 1: looks at his hands. I might have developed a resistance
- 33:34Speaker 1: to the wasp's toxin. He curls his hands into fists.
- 33:39Speaker 1: If that's the case, we should be able to make
- 33:41Speaker 1: a serum for my blood. I mean, that would be
- 33:45Speaker 1: really complicated. Nezumi's like, what an idiot. You think they'll
- 33:49Speaker 1: believe you? Shion says. Then what should we do? Nezumi's like,
- 33:54Speaker 1: let it be. He flips the pages in his book.
- 33:58Speaker 1: Just watch the city destroy itself from the best seats
- 34:01Speaker 1: in the house. Shion's like, Nezumi! Nezumi sits up. Whoa, wait,
- 34:06Speaker 1: don't throw water at me again. Shion is not holding
- 34:09Speaker 1: a pitcher or anything, but he says, do you think
- 34:11Speaker 1: the west block is safe? He puts one of his
- 34:14Speaker 1: hands on his chest. You're human too. Even here we
- 34:18Speaker 1: might be killed by those parasitic wasps. Nezumi chuckles. The
- 34:22Speaker 1: people in the city don't even think of us as
- 34:24Speaker 1: human beings. Shion gasps. Why? I don't know. Nezumi continues.
- 34:29Speaker 1: We're in the garbage dump of the holy city. Number
- 34:33Speaker 1: six has prospered by tossing every bit of pollution out here. Also,
- 34:38Speaker 1: this is just my intuition, but I think those monsters
- 34:40Speaker 1: only choose their hosts from those within the walls. Shion gasps.
- 34:45Speaker 1: He's kind of like receding into the background now, like
- 34:47Speaker 1: looking scared, like he's getting smaller as just everything else
- 34:50Speaker 1: stays the same size. You know, his world is collapsing
- 34:53Speaker 1: around him, basically. Nezumi continues. You never hear of people
- 34:56Speaker 1: dying from them here. I mean, I think it's pretty new,
- 34:59Speaker 1: but whatever. In other words, wouldn't that be because there
- 35:01Speaker 1: are no hosts? No prey? Shion's like, that's... Nezumi has
- 35:06Speaker 1: the black mouse in his hand now. On the other hand...
- 35:09Speaker 1: There have been several reports of people suffering mysterious accidental
- 35:14Speaker 1: deaths within number six. Shion is still receding into the
- 35:18Speaker 1: background and he's very small now. And also he's got
- 35:21Speaker 1: like a nice red overlay over him because he's freaking out.
- 35:26Speaker 1: Nezumi laughs. Our monster is quite the gourmet. Shion sits
- 35:31Speaker 1: down on the couch and there's just silence for a
- 35:33Speaker 1: while as he just stares at the floor. I mean, yeah,
- 35:37Speaker 1: this is bad. Eventually, Nezumi sighs and stands and he says,
- 35:41Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to torture you. Uh, really?
- 35:45Speaker 1: He pulls up a chair like right in front of
- 35:48Speaker 1: Shion and sits down and puts his hand on Shion's head.
- 35:52Speaker 1: You were one of those people within the walls, weren't you?
- 35:55Speaker 1: Shion's like, all this talk about inside and outside doesn't
- 35:59Speaker 1: make any sense to me. Nezumi says, of course it doesn't.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Because you never even try to understand. I don't think
- 36:07Speaker 1: that's fair. Shion looks up at him. Nezumi runs his
- 36:10Speaker 1: hand through Shion's hair, kind of down the side of
- 36:12Speaker 1: his face, and continues, an entire populace that never doubts
- 36:17Speaker 1: the information they're given. An ignorant, arrogant, blessed populace. He
- 36:23Speaker 1: smiles in this way that's kind of like kind, but
- 36:26Speaker 1: in the most patronizing way. But it's all so sad.
- 36:32Speaker 1: Here you are, having fallen from your place there. He
- 36:36Speaker 1: touches the red mark on Shion's cheek. Shion looks like
- 36:41Speaker 1: a fucking disaster. And he continues. And number six won't
- 36:45Speaker 1: give you the chance to crawl back. Fuck, dude! Shion
- 36:51Speaker 1: looks a little more deflated now. He says, Nezumi? Nezumi's like, huh?
- 36:57Speaker 1: Shion stands. I want to know the truth. What the
- 37:00Speaker 1: truth is and what's happening to the world I live in.
- 37:02Speaker 1: I want to know its true form. Nezumi stares at
- 37:06Speaker 1: him for a second and then smiles. It's amazing how
- 37:09Speaker 1: you can give such embarrassing speeches. He stands. Come with me.
- 37:15Speaker 1: We cut to the sky. The moon is full and
- 37:17Speaker 1: bright and it's partly cloudy still. We see them walking
- 37:21Speaker 1: down a dirt slope with, you know, tons of rubble
- 37:23Speaker 1: and rocks on it. Shion is trailing significantly behind Nezumi
- 37:27Speaker 1: because of course he is. And he says, Nezumi, where
- 37:31Speaker 1: are we going? Nezumi's like, a hotel. Shion says, a hotel?
- 37:36Speaker 1: He stops walking and he makes like a little sound
- 37:39Speaker 1: and we see that there's a dead wasp on the
- 37:41Speaker 1: ground and Shion picks it up and starts to examine it.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Nezumi at this point stops and turns back. That's just
- 37:47Speaker 1: a normal paper wasp. He is too far away to
- 37:50Speaker 1: know that, but I'm assuming he just saw it when
- 37:53Speaker 1: he was walking down this area or something? Shion very
- 37:56Speaker 1: quietly says, spring. Nezumi's like, huh? Shion says, spring. If
- 38:01Speaker 1: we wait until winter, the wasps will go into hibernation.
- 38:05Speaker 1: Even the parasitic wasp eggs that have been planted inside
- 38:08Speaker 1: people will probably pass through the winter without developing. Then,
- 38:12Speaker 1: if spring comes, when they grow and move around, they'll
- 38:15Speaker 1: all break free at once. Fuck. Nezumi whistles. That sounds great.
- 38:22Speaker 1: A total spring festival. What's it called again? The thing
- 38:25Speaker 1: commemorating number six's founding? Shion says. The holy day. Nezumi
- 38:30Speaker 1: turns to look at the wall in the distance and
- 38:33Speaker 1: he spreads his arms out wide. The holy day! He's
- 38:36Speaker 1: kind of like pantomiming with his arms and very, very overdramatic.
- 38:41Speaker 1: Right in the middle of the festival, the man-eating wasps
- 38:44Speaker 1: will eat their way out of the human bastards and
- 38:47Speaker 1: the area will be enveloped with agonizing screams. He starts
- 38:51Speaker 1: to laugh. This kid! Shion stares at him like, what
- 38:56Speaker 1: the fuck, dude? I thought you just apologized to me.
- 38:59Speaker 1: Nezumi continues. Now that's something worth seeing. Shion looks down
- 39:03Speaker 1: at the wasp again, and Nezumi starts to walk off.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Shion's like, Nezumi? Nezumi is still walking. Huh? Shion says.
- 39:11Speaker 1: Why do you hate number six? Nezumi stops again. Shion stands. Why?
- 39:17Speaker 1: Nezumi just starts to walk off again. Shion kind of gasps,
- 39:21Speaker 1: but then follows. We go to a shot of a city.
- 39:24Speaker 1: It's like large, kind of pieced together looking buildings and...
- 39:29Speaker 1: in the middle, there's like this stone building part that's
- 39:34Speaker 1: like at least five stories tall. And it's basically flanked
- 39:37Speaker 1: by wooden piecemeal building, kind of. And there's a sign
- 39:43Speaker 1: on the middle piece that says Inukashi, which means dog lender,
- 39:48Speaker 1: by the way. It's important that you know that. We
- 39:52Speaker 1: hear Nezumi say, we're here. We cut to an above
- 39:55Speaker 1: shot of Nezumi and Shion walking into a very dark lobby.
- 40:00Speaker 1: There's a desk on the left and some wood boards
- 40:03Speaker 1: are just hanging out on the right. And there appears
- 40:06Speaker 1: to be a balcony kind of like overhanging from the
- 40:08Speaker 1: second floor. Shion's like, this was a hotel? He's kind
- 40:13Speaker 1: of looking around. Nezumi says, it still is. Shion's like, what?
- 40:19Speaker 1: They stop suddenly and Nezumi looks kind of like he's
- 40:22Speaker 1: bracing himself. And Shion looks kind of surprised because there's
- 40:26Speaker 1: a growl. Dogs just kind of like start emerging from
- 40:29Speaker 1: any area they could have been behind, like chairs and
- 40:32Speaker 1: shit and all that stuff. And they look really fucking pissed.
- 40:36Speaker 1: Shion steps back and is like, dogs? More dogs come
- 40:40Speaker 1: out from the shadows behind him. And Shion turns quickly.
- 40:44Speaker 1: He's surrounded now. And he says... What is this place?
- 40:47Speaker 1: A den of wild dogs? Shion and Nezumi are standing
- 40:50Speaker 1: back to back now, and Nezumi pulls a knife out
- 40:53Speaker 1: of his pocket dramatically. The dogs begin to encircle them, snarling.
- 40:58Speaker 1: At this point, one of them comes right up to Shion,
- 41:01Speaker 1: baring its teeth. Shion steps back slightly and gasps, but
- 41:05Speaker 1: he just stares at the dog with some, you know,
- 41:07Speaker 1: resolve in his eyes, and the dog continues to snarl
- 41:10Speaker 1: for a little while, but then it stops, and it
- 41:13Speaker 1: kind of just whines. And then it sits and starts
- 41:16Speaker 1: to wag its tail. Shion kneels down and the dog
- 41:19Speaker 1: jumps on him and just starts licking his face. He laughs.
- 41:23Speaker 1: Nezumi turns and gasps. And he really doesn't look happy
- 41:26Speaker 1: about this, which I thought was shitty. And at this point,
- 41:29Speaker 1: all the other dogs just like sit down and relax.
- 41:31Speaker 1: Everything's good now. Shion says, looks like I passed the interview, huh?
- 41:36Speaker 1: Nezumi just kind of goes, we then hear laughter far
- 41:39Speaker 1: off in the distance. And a voice says, welcome, my guests.
- 41:44Speaker 1: It is a person, a woman, with long dark brown
- 41:48Speaker 1: hair and tan skin standing at the railing on the
- 41:52Speaker 1: second floor holding a lantern. She says, put that dangerous
- 41:57Speaker 1: thing away, Nezumi. Nezumi puts his knife away and says,
- 42:00Speaker 1: that's only because you have such a nice manner of
- 42:02Speaker 1: greeting people. Shion's like, who's that? Nezumi says, Inukashi. Inukashi
- 42:09Speaker 1: smiles whitely. We cut to a beat up hallway with
- 42:12Speaker 1: stained red or pink carpet and like cracked walls and
- 42:17Speaker 1: like lots of wooden doors lining it. They walk around
- 42:20Speaker 1: the corner into view of the shot and Inukashi is leading.
- 42:23Speaker 1: Shion is like a few paces behind them and he's
- 42:26Speaker 1: like looking around and there's a room with a door
- 42:28Speaker 1: open that's like filthy and decrepit in there. And there's
- 42:32Speaker 1: a homeless man sleeping on the floor in it. And
- 42:34Speaker 1: he's like spooning a dog. The dog is the little spoon,
- 42:37Speaker 1: I think. Whatever. He's spooning this dog. Yeah. We hear
- 42:41Speaker 1: Nezumi say, where's the information I requested? Inukashi's like, I'm
- 42:46Speaker 1: sure you understand I need payment first. They pass another
- 42:49Speaker 1: room where the door is open for some reason and
- 42:52Speaker 1: there's a guy in there with two dogs sleeping on
- 42:54Speaker 1: the floor with him. That's even better. Shion stops and
- 42:59Speaker 1: looks in and then runs to catch up with them.
- 43:01Speaker 1: Shion says, who are all the people in these rooms?
- 43:04Speaker 1: It's a hotel, Shion. Inukashi's like, they're paying customers, of course.
- 43:09Speaker 1: I give these restless birds a place to rest for cheap,
- 43:13Speaker 1: Shion says. What about the dogs? Inukashi's like, I'm renting
- 43:17Speaker 1: them out for heating. Keeps people from dying from the cold.
- 43:21Speaker 1: Shion's like, so that's where the name comes from. We
- 43:24Speaker 1: get an overhead shot of the hotel and we can
- 43:26Speaker 1: see that it goes like all the way around the block.
- 43:28Speaker 1: Like it makes almost a square. There's like an open
- 43:30Speaker 1: part at the back. Inside, kind of in the courtyard area,
- 43:34Speaker 1: there's like a pond maybe or something with a tree
- 43:38Speaker 1: in the middle. I couldn't really tell. And then we
- 43:40Speaker 1: see a light come on in the last window on
- 43:43Speaker 1: the second floor, like all the way on the right side.
- 43:47Speaker 1: We see Shion's back as he walks across the room
- 43:50Speaker 1: and we hear Inukashi say, Nezumi, while examining your request,
- 43:54Speaker 1: I ran into many interesting things. Shion looks over at her.
- 43:59Speaker 1: They're in a kind of small room with torn red
- 44:03Speaker 1: patterned wallpaper and boxes all over the floor. And it's
- 44:06Speaker 1: got like really nice wood trim details. Inukashi holds up
- 44:10Speaker 1: a strip of paper with something written on it. Very small.
- 44:14Speaker 1: And says, I'll have to ask you for a little extra.
- 44:16Speaker 1: Shion swipes the paper out of her hands, which is weird.
- 44:19Speaker 1: And she's like, what? He starts to examine it. Inukashi's like,
- 44:23Speaker 1: what do you think you're doing? Shion says, it's my mom.
- 44:27Speaker 1: The paper? Inukashi's like, huh? Shion continues, this is my
- 44:32Speaker 1: mom's handwriting. We see the writing on the paper, which
- 44:35Speaker 1: is in Japanese, but it says like, if I'm remembering correctly,
- 44:40Speaker 1: it says something like Latch Building 1300. It's like an address, basically,
- 44:45Speaker 1: and it has a person's name on it. Shion says, Nozomi,
- 44:49Speaker 1: did you contact my mother for me? Huh? Nozomi's like,
- 44:54Speaker 1: it wasn't me. One of our little friends went there
- 44:56Speaker 1: on a whim. aww, you jerk. Shion smiles. Thank you.
- 45:02Speaker 1: Nezumi looks away and kind of sighs. And Shion's like, wait,
- 45:05Speaker 1: if we could contact my mom, then we could, we
- 45:08Speaker 1: could notify everyone of the parasitic wasps. We cut to
- 45:11Speaker 1: Nezumi's eyes as he stares really coldly at Shion. And
- 45:15Speaker 1: Inukashi's like, parasitic wasps? Shion continues, that's it. We can
- 45:20Speaker 1: contact the hygiene management bureau. He walks over and puts
- 45:24Speaker 1: his hands on Inukashi's shoulders for some reason. And she's
- 45:26Speaker 1: like real weirded out and also much shorter than him.
- 45:29Speaker 1: He continues. Even if it takes time, if we have
- 45:32Speaker 1: patience and convince them. Inukashi's like, uh, sure. Shion releases
- 45:39Speaker 1: Inukashi and, you know, makes his hands into fists. We
- 45:41Speaker 1: even have a sample of the pupa. And more than anything,
- 45:44Speaker 1: I survived it. Inukashi is just standing there like, what
- 45:48Speaker 1: the fuck's happening? Shion continues. If we can come up
- 45:51Speaker 1: with some kind of plan before next spring, number six
- 45:53Speaker 1: can be... We hear Nezumi cut in. Shion. Shion stops.
- 45:59Speaker 1: Nezumi starts to walk over to him. If upon finding
- 46:01Speaker 1: out the truth, you still intend to protect number six.
- 46:04Speaker 1: Shion kind of gasps. When the time comes, you too.
- 46:08Speaker 1: There's a pause as he stops walking. We'll be my enemy.
- 46:12Speaker 1: Shion's eyes widen and he gasps again. They stare at
- 46:15Speaker 1: each other and then we fade to black. And that's it.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Then we go to the ending. And then that's it. Yay. Okay.
- 46:23Speaker 1: So closing thoughts. I have a lot of thoughts. So
- 46:25Speaker 1: I'm going to try to parse them and make sure
- 46:27Speaker 1: that they make sense. So starting with this last scene,
- 46:30Speaker 1: basically everything this episode goes totally differently than it goes
- 46:34Speaker 1: in the manga and the light novel. The manga basically
- 46:36Speaker 1: follows the light novel. Just kind of everything is less, obviously.
- 46:41Speaker 1: But this stuff doesn't happen right here. in the manga
- 46:45Speaker 1: slash light novel it happens in the next day but
- 46:48Speaker 1: whatever it doesn't actually matter but I did want to
- 46:50Speaker 1: point out so when Nezumi communicated with his mom according
- 46:55Speaker 1: to the other you know the source materials Nezumi had
- 46:59Speaker 1: to go back through the sewers to I guess get
- 47:02Speaker 1: that mouse to spot where he could communicate with Shion's
- 47:06Speaker 1: mom so Shion is like what the fuck dude like
- 47:09Speaker 1: this dude actually he risked his life again just to
- 47:12Speaker 1: communicate with his mom kind of furthering the thing where
- 47:15Speaker 1: Nezumi's actions are not matching his words, which is something
- 47:19Speaker 1: we're doing a lot in this episode, where everything he
- 47:22Speaker 1: says is just the opposite of what he's doing. He's
- 47:25Speaker 1: telling Shion he needs to let go of attachments and
- 47:28Speaker 1: all this shit, and he has been monitoring Shion for
- 47:31Speaker 1: years because he is very much attached to him. And actually,
- 47:37Speaker 1: I mean, it's making things harder for him. So maybe
- 47:41Speaker 1: he knows... that he is the problem. Maybe he's doing the, like,
- 47:47Speaker 1: don't do what I do, do as I say thing,
- 47:49Speaker 1: because I know I'm stupid thing. Trying to save Shion
- 47:53Speaker 1: the grief of what it feels like to care about people.
- 47:57Speaker 1: But it's stupid because you need to care about people.
- 47:59Speaker 1: And then, of course, he's like, don't die, because what
- 48:02Speaker 1: about your mom? It's like, well, if he didn't care
- 48:04Speaker 1: about his mom, that wouldn't work, right? So lots of
- 48:07Speaker 1: contradictions here, which are all fine and good. So, yeah,
- 48:11Speaker 1: there's that shit going on. The whole thing with Shion
- 48:15Speaker 1: getting white hair and, you know, the little weird tattoo
- 48:18Speaker 1: mark pink thing was really interesting to me. Well, first
- 48:22Speaker 1: of all, like I'm not a huge fan of like
- 48:24Speaker 1: the trope where the character's hair color changes suddenly, basically
- 48:28Speaker 1: because I just it just can't happen. Your hair just
- 48:30Speaker 1: can't change colors right now. I mean, could it change
- 48:33Speaker 1: color over time? Sure. And he went through just an
- 48:36Speaker 1: incredible amount of stress. So it could totally start growing
- 48:39Speaker 1: in white, but it's not going to suddenly just be white.
- 48:41Speaker 1: I kind of hate that. But besides that, in the anime,
- 48:46Speaker 1: the process seemed less horrible, obviously, than it was in
- 48:50Speaker 1: the light novel series. And in the light novel, Shion
- 48:54Speaker 1: is kind of like in and out of consciousness for
- 48:56Speaker 1: like a long time. And Nezumi is like trying to
- 48:59Speaker 1: get him to drink water so he doesn't die. And
- 49:01Speaker 1: Shion just remembers how good that water tasted. And it's
- 49:05Speaker 1: just nice. It's cool. And it's interesting. And we kind
- 49:08Speaker 1: of just lose all of that in the anime. I mean,
- 49:10Speaker 1: they did say it's been three days since he got
- 49:12Speaker 1: out of bed. But even with all the screaming and
- 49:15Speaker 1: the crying and everything that Xian was doing, it kind
- 49:17Speaker 1: of lost some of the urgency or severity of what
- 49:24Speaker 1: was going on. And that's kind of sad. I mean,
- 49:26Speaker 1: it still was pretty bad. He still almost died, I guess. So, yeah.
- 49:33Speaker 1: But with that all said... The part where he notices
- 49:36Speaker 1: how he looks is different in the other two versions
- 49:39Speaker 1: of this. The other two versions, you know, he wakes up,
- 49:43Speaker 1: Nezumi's not around, and he just goes outside and he
- 49:47Speaker 1: runs into some kids who just scream when they see
- 49:51Speaker 1: him and shout like snake. And he's just like, what
- 49:54Speaker 1: the fuck? And then that's how he finds out, which
- 49:56Speaker 1: is harder to do in anime. It's harder to get
- 49:59Speaker 1: him outside without showing us him, you know? you know,
- 50:03Speaker 1: have to be like in first person perspective or we'd
- 50:05Speaker 1: have to just see his legs or something, which is doable,
- 50:08Speaker 1: but they just went the easier route, which is, I mean,
- 50:10Speaker 1: it's what it is. It's what it is. But my
- 50:13Speaker 1: problem with this in particular is I just felt like
- 50:17Speaker 1: in the anime that Shion, I mean, he was upset
- 50:21Speaker 1: because he like survived and Yama Seisan didn't survive and
- 50:23Speaker 1: shit like that. But I felt like he was really
- 50:25Speaker 1: upset about the way that he looked. I felt like
- 50:28Speaker 1: that was like, oh shit, I'm just ugly now or something.
- 50:31Speaker 1: And now I want to die. And I mean, it's
- 50:34Speaker 1: not exactly that, but that's what it felt like to me.
- 50:37Speaker 1: Like that was the big deal. Like, oh shit, my
- 50:39Speaker 1: looks have changed. Like fucking, I don't know, man. I
- 50:43Speaker 1: get it. I get like you have an identity and
- 50:45Speaker 1: you have a sense of self and you want to
- 50:46Speaker 1: be your version of yourself. And it's startling when suddenly
- 50:50Speaker 1: you have white hair and like a really interesting scar.
- 50:54Speaker 1: But like, I just felt like it was too much.
- 50:56Speaker 1: I mean, he's out of it. He's been, you know,
- 50:59Speaker 1: in bed for three days. So I got to give
- 51:01Speaker 1: him a little credit. But I just felt like in
- 51:03Speaker 1: the light novel and in the manga, like it didn't
- 51:06Speaker 1: feel like that was the crushing part that his appearance
- 51:09Speaker 1: had changed. It just felt like the entire situation was crushing. So, yeah.
- 51:14Speaker 1: So I felt like his I want to live in
- 51:16Speaker 1: the Manga and light novel were, I don't know, I
- 51:19Speaker 1: just liked them better. But whatever. So that's what we
- 51:23Speaker 1: got going on. The other thing I wanted to talk
- 51:25Speaker 1: about when I'm not comparing this to other source material,
- 51:29Speaker 1: and this is something that I have a problem with,
- 51:32Speaker 1: is fucking Nezumi is kind of an asshole. Like, listen,
- 51:36Speaker 1: I get that the city is bad and we haven't
- 51:38Speaker 1: seen the depths of how bad the city is yet.
- 51:41Speaker 1: So maybe you won't agree with me in the future.
- 51:45Speaker 1: Maybe I won't agree with this take. when we get
- 51:48Speaker 1: further on, because it's been a while. But he really
- 51:51Speaker 1: hates number six. But he hates number six the way
- 51:54Speaker 1: you don't want people to hate something, which is he
- 51:57Speaker 1: just hates it as an entity and everything inside it.
- 52:01Speaker 1: The people in number six don't know this is happening.
- 52:05Speaker 1: I mean, they don't understand what's going on outside of
- 52:07Speaker 1: the walls, as far as I can tell. So, like,
- 52:10Speaker 1: I get it. You hate them because they're ignorant people.
- 52:14Speaker 1: And they haven't made an effort to figure out what
- 52:17Speaker 1: the real world is like. But the thing is, they
- 52:20Speaker 1: have a government force feeding them just total lies. And
- 52:24Speaker 1: they have no reason to believe that it's not true.
- 52:27Speaker 1: You know, their society is basically perfect. There's not a
- 52:30Speaker 1: lot of reason to question. So I don't think it's
- 52:33Speaker 1: fair to blame them for not doing their due diligence
- 52:36Speaker 1: on what the world is like. There's nothing there to
- 52:39Speaker 1: show them. So I'm not a huge fan of his
- 52:43Speaker 1: take on number six. basically. I mean, yeah, fuck the government.
- 52:47Speaker 1: They seem like they're pieces of shit. But Shion's family
- 52:50Speaker 1: is there. His mom is there. Asafu is there on
- 52:53Speaker 1: and off. I mean, she's in another city right now.
- 52:55Speaker 1: But like, you can't talk about this around him and
- 52:58Speaker 1: laugh about it. Like, this isn't going to destroy everything
- 53:02Speaker 1: he's ever known and all the people he's ever known.
- 53:04Speaker 1: It's really just absolutely shitty and totally like off the charts,
- 53:09Speaker 1: poor emotional IQ, basically. And the fact that he did
- 53:13Speaker 1: it once and then he couldn't stop himself when he
- 53:16Speaker 1: was outside from doing it again and being so overdramatic.
- 53:20Speaker 1: He's like, like play acting all of this out, which
- 53:24Speaker 1: we'll get to in the next episode why he's like that.
- 53:26Speaker 1: But it's so, what's that word? Disrespectful. It's so fucking
- 53:34Speaker 1: disrespectful to Shion. And also just these like digs about like, oh,
- 53:38Speaker 1: you know, you lost your place and Like, he gets
- 53:41Speaker 1: Glee out of Shion's misery, which Shion doesn't seem to
- 53:45Speaker 1: be too miserable most of the time. But still, the
- 53:47Speaker 1: idea that Shion doesn't have that anymore, that he's going
- 53:50Speaker 1: to have to struggle down in the fucking shit with Nezumi, like,
- 53:54Speaker 1: makes him happy. And that sucks. Because if you care
- 54:00Speaker 1: about someone... You don't want them to have bad things
- 54:04Speaker 1: happen to them. Even if you have bad things happen
- 54:06Speaker 1: to you, you should not want someone you care about
- 54:10Speaker 1: to have to struggle and just go through tremendous pain.
- 54:16Speaker 1: And if you do, I don't think you're a good person. Sorry. So, yeah.
- 54:21Speaker 1: So I'm talking so much. Another thing is when we
- 54:27Speaker 1: met Inukashi, you know, dog lender, just a couple minutes ago,
- 54:31Speaker 1: I said that they were a woman. Yeah, so I
- 54:36Speaker 1: felt like it was necessary to say what I saw.
- 54:39Speaker 1: This person, I mean, they have long hair. They just
- 54:43Speaker 1: look like they look like a woman. Like a kind
- 54:45Speaker 1: of short, girlish, definitely not like, you know, feminine. But
- 54:51Speaker 1: they look like a woman and their voice sounds like
- 54:54Speaker 1: it's a female voice. I don't know what Inukashi's gender is. actually.
- 55:02Speaker 1: But I do know I'm not supposed to know that
- 55:05Speaker 1: they are a woman or, you know, assigned female at birth.
- 55:08Speaker 1: And I just think that's weird because you can get
- 55:11Speaker 1: away with that in the light novel, no problem, because
- 55:14Speaker 1: you can't see the person. But in the anime, and
- 55:17Speaker 1: to a lesser extent, also in the manga, this person
- 55:20Speaker 1: looks like they are a woman. So you're probably not
- 55:23Speaker 1: supposed to know that yet. I'm not supposed to know
- 55:25Speaker 1: that yet. But there's no way neither of us would
- 55:28Speaker 1: know that. I knew it the first time I watched it.
- 55:30Speaker 1: So I didn't want to say, oh, this guy, because
- 55:32Speaker 1: it's very clearly not supposed to be a guy. I mean,
- 55:37Speaker 1: maybe supposed to be, but not well enough that I
- 55:39Speaker 1: would believe it. Yeah. And that's all I have to
- 55:43Speaker 1: say this week, I think. Yeah. Yeah. So that's it.
- 55:50Speaker 1: Just fair warning. Next week, episode four is my like,
- 55:54Speaker 1: I have so many things about that episode that like
- 55:58Speaker 1: I am really angry about. So it's going to be
- 56:01Speaker 1: a lot, guys, maybe. Or maybe I'll just be in
- 56:04Speaker 1: a really bad mood when I record it and then
- 56:05Speaker 1: I won't. But I think it's going to be long.
- 56:09Speaker 1: And if you watch the fourth episode before, you know,
- 56:12Speaker 1: listening to my podcast, which you might, you should probably
- 56:15Speaker 1: know what the things that are going to piss me
- 56:17Speaker 1: off are. Because there are things that, like, you should,
- 56:19Speaker 1: at this point, I feel like you should just know, like, oh,
- 56:21Speaker 1: Michelle is really going to hate that. So, yeah, that's
- 56:26Speaker 1: what's happening. I'm excited for next week. And I'm going
- 56:29Speaker 1: to go... Be a person still, I hope. I'm not
- 56:35Speaker 1: really sure I'm a person. But if I am, I'm
- 56:37Speaker 1: going to continue, at least for a little while. And
- 56:40Speaker 1: I hope you have a really good whatever. And I
- 56:43Speaker 1: will see you next time if you choose to continue
- 56:48Speaker 1: doing this shit with me. Which you don't have to.
- 56:52Speaker 1: I get it. All right. See ya. But if you're
- 56:57Speaker 1: still here, yep. I don't know. I'll see you next time. Later, weebs.
