Latest / 22 Panels - A Comic Book Podcast / Saga Book Club #12 - Volume 12
Transcript
- 0:02Tad Eggleston: Good evening, everybody! Welcome back to…
- 0:07Tad Eggleston: not the last Saga book club, but we're gonna have to figure out something else to read for a couple of months while we're waiting for issue 73.
- 0:18Tad Eggleston: So we'll set aside a couple minutes at the end of the podcast to discuss what we should read in between. I'm recommending either very short series or one-shot graphic novels so that we don't get caught in something long and then have new saga come out. Unless…
- 0:38Tad Eggleston: The other thing to think on is, do we want to wait until we have another arc, or do we want to start going issue by issue as we get new stuff
- 0:48Tad Eggleston: Which… is gonna be at least October, because the… the…
- 0:52Tad Eggleston: July for September catalog came out, and it doesn't have Saga in it. So…
- 0:57Matt & Belle: Yeah, I feel like, since we're close to the end, issue by issue might actually be kind of cool.
- 1:03Tad Eggleston: That's where I was leaning.
- 1:05Tad Eggleston: And then we'd still have, like, the 3 months in between to do other things. Yeah. So.
- 1:13Matt & Belle: By Matt Kent. Hint, hint, hint.
- 1:15Tad Eggleston: I'm all for it!
- 1:18Matt & Belle: I need it.
- 1:18Tad Eggleston: another Mind Management by Matt Kent, and Mind Management is back on the shelves now.
- 1:23Matt & Belle: Maybe that's him.
- 1:25Tad Eggleston: And, and, like, Lee is making faces. Lee, have you ever read Mind Management, or have you just looked at the issue of New and Improved?
- 1:33Lee Woods: I've read the new and improved, the free, comic book, and…
- 1:39Lee Woods: was, like, blown away by it, so, like, that's.
- 1:41Tad Eggleston: Yeah, you need to do the other series.
- 1:44Tad Eggleston: The full series.
- 1:46Tad Eggleston: I… I… it's across the room, but I showed Matt when he was on one of the volumes from when I book-clubbed it, and it's just filled with post-it notes.
- 1:56Lee Woods: God.
- 1:56Tad Eggleston: filled with post-it notes. Like, an average of a post-it note per page with a note, or question, or whatever.
- 2:03Tad Eggleston: And it turns out he doesn't really plan it all out. Huh.
- 2:09Tad Eggleston: I thought he was gonna have, like, one of those murder boards, like, red string going along, and…
- 2:15Tad Eggleston: Apparently, it just comes out of his head that way, and then he'll go back and, like.
- 2:19Matt & Belle: We can work on it.
- 2:20Tad Eggleston: drawing at his stuff, he'll fill in some of the other stuff that makes it seem like there's that much more…
- 2:27Lee Woods: Honestly, I kinda love that.
- 2:29Tad Eggleston: I do too, but it's like… I'm also, like, blown away by that mind.
- 2:35Matt & Belle: I feel like that just means the murder board is in his head, and he's a scary human.
- 2:39Tad Eggleston: Something like that, I mean…
- 2:40Matt & Belle: I'm kidding.
- 2:41Tad Eggleston: He's a cool guy, though.
- 2:43Matt & Belle: I totally believe it.
- 2:44Tad Eggleston: Very cool guy. I enjoyed talking to him.
- 2:47Tad Eggleston: So, Saga, Volume 12.
- 2:52Tad Eggleston: Issues 67… to 72.
- 2:59Tad Eggleston: Where we meet Sploot.
- 3:01Tad Eggleston: Among other things.
- 3:04Tad Eggleston: Right on the cover, issue 67, Sploot!
- 3:10Tad Eggleston: I kinda love the, Ringmaster, too.
- 3:13Matt & Belle: Yeah.
- 3:15Matt & Belle: I have a lot of things I'm excited to talk about in this issue, actually.
- 3:19Tad Eggleston: Well, then… well, hold on. No, no. Josh missed last… last…
- 3:24Tad Eggleston: volume, and I know he had some feelings. So, we need to let Josh get some feelings out, and then we'll let… then we'll let Belle lead off Volume 12.
- 3:35Josh Eiserike: Sure, so Volume Volume 11 is not fresh in my head. I read it…
- 3:41Tad Eggleston: That's probably good.
- 3:43Josh Eiserike: A month ago.
- 3:43Tad Eggleston: Based on the text messages you sent, if it was fresh in your head, we might be…
- 3:48Josh Eiserike: I… I actually, like, it didn't have, like…
- 3:52Josh Eiserike: shocking, sad moments, like, I mean, we are well into spoiler territory at this point in Volume 12, like, you know, the death of Marco, or, other, very, very tragic moments, with,
- 4:08Josh Eiserike: Kearney, yup.
- 4:10Josh Eiserike: But I just found this whole volume to be just heartbreaking.
- 4:14Josh Eiserike: I mean, is… and again, it's not super fresh. This is… this is where Atlanta's basically…
- 4:20Josh Eiserike: They're… they're living in a tent, and she's working at, like, an Amazon fulfillment center, is that what's happening? Yep.
- 4:28Josh Eiserike: and… It… it just felt… incredibly
- 4:33Josh Eiserike: like, still entertaining as hell. And, you know, I… I…
- 4:39Josh Eiserike: live in Los Angeles, so… I see that on a fairly regular basis without the sci-fi making it cooler. Just, you know, how bleak people's lives are.
- 4:52Josh Eiserike: And I mean, shh, She's a mom, you know, raising two kids without a dad.
- 4:59Josh Eiserike: Or without any help.
- 5:02Josh Eiserike: And it was rough. And then this one, was just… So much more fun.
- 5:10Josh Eiserike: Oh.
- 5:11Josh Eiserike: And, and, and, and also, like…
- 5:15Josh Eiserike: We are past the point, at least for me, speaking personally.
- 5:20Josh Eiserike: in this story where I can relate, because now Hazel is older than my kids.
- 5:27Josh Eiserike: So, reading the previous volumes, like, it definitely brought up some, you know, emotions, and reminded me of moments from my life, at various stages with my own kids, but now it's like, oh, I guess I'm reading into the future. This is what middle school's gonna be like.
- 5:44Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 5:45Josh Eiserike: Okay.
- 5:46Tad Eggleston: I think for the last volume, what killed me the most was that Alana was constantly having to choose the lesser of two bad options in order to…
- 6:00Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Never actually do what was best for her kids, but do what was least worst for her kids.
- 6:07Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 6:09Tad Eggleston: Ew.
- 6:12Tad Eggleston: So, like, with this volume, we see them in some semblance of stability again for the first time in a while. And therefore, the kids get to get in all sorts of trouble, but it's not because Alana is…
- 6:26Tad Eggleston: Constantly strung out, and constantly… Having to make those hard decisions on, like.
- 6:34Tad Eggleston: Do we eat, or do you get to do something fun today? Do we…
- 6:39Tad Eggleston: Do I spend time with you, or work another shift?
- 6:43Josh Eiserike: Right.
- 6:44Tad Eggleston: You know, do I take this incredibly dangerous assignment that will keep you safe?
- 6:50Tad Eggleston: Or… Or do I try to keep you safe?
- 6:55Tad Eggleston: Even though the people around us are angry at us.
- 6:59Josh Eiserike: Right.
- 7:03Tad Eggleston: And then, like, the added thing with the woman who said she could bring Marco back and…
- 7:09Tad Eggleston: The fact that the kids heard that was just, like… that was torture.
- 7:13Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 7:14Tad Eggleston: That was torture.
- 7:15Josh Eiserike: I'd forgotten that, that was really sad.
- 7:17Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 7:18Tad Eggleston: So, Belle… You said you had all sorts of thoughts on this one. Let's get into the good stuff.
- 7:25Matt & Belle: Alright, so I'll start with a rose and a thorn, but both are kind of roses. A thorn for some, we're gonna start with a thorn. The will. The will burn, burns in a house, question mark. My, my, my rose is emesis.
- 7:39Tad Eggleston: worn?
- 7:41Matt & Belle: Yeah, it's a thorn for some, not for me. They're two roses.
- 7:45Matt & Belle: And my other rose is that Emesis is here now, and I really love her. I love that Hazel has a friend, and I love that she's 12. 12 was a great age for me, so I can relate to Hazel here when she's like, 12 was great. I'm like, yeah, 12 was great. Because, like, yeah, there's bad things about everyone's being 12, but, like, you're 12, and it's kind of awesome, because it's right before you realize the world sucks, and it's right after you realize, like, you're a human being and can be a person, and, like, life becomes fun, you know?
- 8:10Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 8:12Matt & Belle: Those are some of my thoughts. I want to see what everyone else has to say, though, before I… because I could go.
- 8:17Josh Eiserike: Go back, Ted?
- 8:22Josh Eiserike: Anybody get the reference? Go, go too forward.
- 8:27Josh Eiserike: Anybody get that?
- 8:30Matt & Belle: The propaganda poster?
- 8:32Josh Eiserike: Norman Rockwell.
- 8:34Lee Woods: Oh, no. Nope.
- 8:38Josh Eiserike: Not… not the propaganda, but the kid outside the principal's office, that's straight out of Norman Rockwell.
- 8:43Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 8:44Matt & Belle: Yeah, I did not catch that the first time.
- 8:47Lee Woods: Huh.
- 8:47Tad Eggleston: I… I was focused… focused on this, see a horn, you must warn, and thinking, But yeah.
- 8:54Josh Eiserike: find it.
- 8:56Tad Eggleston: No, I, I, I, I, I, even pretty certain…
- 9:01Tad Eggleston: I know which one you're talking about now.
- 9:11Josh Eiserike: It's…
- 9:13Tad Eggleston: I got it.
- 9:14Josh Eiserike: Got it?
- 9:15Tad Eggleston: Young lady with the.
- 9:16Matt & Belle: Oh, yeah, look at that!
- 9:19Josh Eiserike: Yup.
- 9:20Matt & Belle: That's awesome That's an awesome reference.
- 9:25Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 9:30Tad Eggleston: Young lady with the shiner.
- 9:33Matt & Belle: That's beautiful.
- 9:35Tad Eggleston: I like me some Rockwell.
- 9:37Josh Eiserike: I do too.
- 9:40Tad Eggleston: So… She's even got the shiner.
- 9:44Josh Eiserike: Guys, sorry to completely derail the conversation.
- 9:46Tad Eggleston: Not at all!
- 9:47Matt & Belle: No, that was valuable.
- 9:49Tad Eggleston: reference.
- 9:52Matt & Belle: I love our history, that's beautiful.
- 9:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I love seeing the reference. I also like, you know.
- 9:58Tad Eggleston: a little more of what we learn about Alana and her family life here. Yeah. Like, because this is before she had the sister mom.
- 10:07Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 10:08Tad Eggleston: But it sounds pretty clear that mom's, like, fucked up.
- 10:14Tad Eggleston: But also, like, Dad is absolutely dead set against her becoming a soldier.
- 10:22Matt & Belle: As he should be.
- 10:26Tad Eggleston: Well, while…
- 10:27Matt & Belle: It makes the ending more impactful, too.
- 10:29Tad Eggleston: Right. While I agree with that, like, she also, like, she's sitting there going, but you…
- 10:37Tad Eggleston: You talk about all of these horrible people, and it's like, yes, and other people are supposed to go fight them.
- 10:46Tad Eggleston: You know…
- 10:47Tad Eggleston: you get a little bit of how Alana gets her sense of purpose. She felt like her dad
- 10:53Tad Eggleston: Didn't have any clear…
- 10:56Josh Eiserike: Go.
- 10:57Josh Eiserike: And not to completely jump ahead, but what an amazing plant for the end of the volume.
- 11:03Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 11:04Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 11:06Tad Eggleston: Well, and, like, what a fantastic head fake, too, because when Will gets the call right after she's had the conversation with the clown, you just assume it's the clown, but then you wind up seeing the
- 11:24Tad Eggleston: Seeing the bartender on a call.
- 11:27Tad Eggleston: And it's like, wait a minute, what the fuck?
- 11:30Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 11:35Tad Eggleston: What are you… what are you pointing at, Bill?
- 11:37Matt & Belle: Okay, I saw Chapter 69, you should look at how the.
- 11:39Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 11:40Matt & Belle: It's a 69. They drew, they drew them!
- 11:43Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah, no, I mean, everybody knew that was coming.
- 11:45Matt & Belle: That was also a great reference.
- 11:47Tad Eggleston: Everybody knew that was coming.
- 11:49Josh Eiserike: I mean, that's my other favorite Norman Rockwell painting.
- 11:53Matt & Belle: 69?
- 11:55Josh Eiserike: Yeah, that's scary.
- 11:56Tad Eggleston: Yeah, it was from the 69th issue of Saturday Evening Post.
- 12:02Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 12:03Josh Eiserike: There it is.
- 12:05Matt & Belle: Hilarious.
- 12:06Matt & Belle: Isn't that the couple from the, with the pitchfork in the farmhouse? They just…
- 12:11Josh Eiserike: I'm Gothic.
- 12:12Matt & Belle: Yeah, like, use the same.
- 12:14Josh Eiserike: Not Rockwell, but yes.
- 12:17Lee Woods: A little bit more modernized, I would assume.
- 12:19Matt & Belle: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:24Tad Eggleston: Actually…
- 12:30Tad Eggleston: I thought, well.
- 12:31Matt & Belle: That is so sad, though.
- 12:35Tad Eggleston: Other than the fact that… that… that… Like, like, the Will's position…
- 12:47Tad Eggleston: other than the fact that they're… they're not touching. Reminds me of the… the… John Lennon knew?
- 12:56Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 12:57Tad Eggleston: That was Gioco.
- 12:58Josh Eiserike: Yeah…
- 12:59Tad Eggleston: If I had to pick her reference.
- 13:03Tad Eggleston: I would almost say that she took John twice.
- 13:07Josh Eiserike: Leo?
- 13:09Josh Eiserike: I see that.
- 13:13Tad Eggleston: Well, and, like…
- 13:17Tad Eggleston: I mean, when you start getting into that, like, the emptiness in between them is palpable.
- 13:23Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 13:26Tad Eggleston: The fact that they're each only touching each other's leg.
- 13:30Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 13:32Josh Eiserike: I mean, which is, which is also just, you know, great…
- 13:35Josh Eiserike: foreshadowing, in that, like, oh, they're having a great moment, but they're not. They're… they're, like…
- 13:42Josh Eiserike: even though this was much happier, and I'm still on Team Will, like, his story is…
- 13:46Tad Eggleston: I am so not on Team Will, and…
- 13:49Josh Eiserike: sad.
- 13:50Tad Eggleston: And… and…
- 13:51Josh Eiserike: He's… he's a grieving parent!
- 13:53Tad Eggleston: I'm very, very sad for so… well, no, he's not a great parent, because he.
- 13:57Josh Eiserike: Grieving, grieving, grieving, grieving.
- 13:59Tad Eggleston: leaving parent. I'll kind of give him that.
- 14:05Tad Eggleston: But I kinda hate him more because Sophie wound up dying.
- 14:12Matt & Belle: Not his fault.
- 14:13Tad Eggleston: What do you mean it's not his fault? He could have given up it so many different times.
- 14:18Matt & Belle: So.
- 14:18Tad Eggleston: After meeting.
- 14:19Matt & Belle: No, Bundleyn didn't have airtime.
- 14:21Tad Eggleston: F?
- 14:22Tad Eggleston: after meeting Sophie, before… before killing Prince Robot.
- 14:28Tad Eggleston: If he doesn't kill Prince Robot, he doesn't have Petrichor after him.
- 14:34Tad Eggleston: Also, Marco's probably alive. So no, fuck the will.
- 14:40Matt & Belle: I agree, fuck the will!
- 14:41Tad Eggleston: Also, fuck little Billy.
- 14:44Matt & Belle: Literally. Why do you gotta go warn him like that?
- 14:50Lee Woods: I think we all know my, stance on this debate. Sorry.
- 14:55Lee Woods: No, no.
- 14:58Tad Eggleston: Lee, as a clinician, would you, how'd you feel about Squire?
- 15:05Lee Woods: Oh, man. Yeah, this was the part I wanted to talk about, man. This is the part that, like, it hurt.
- 15:11Lee Woods: I definitely felt like…
- 15:13Lee Woods: That sort of emotional response, like the… my gut sort of dropping, where, again.
- 15:20Lee Woods: Just this sort of self-harm here.
- 15:23Lee Woods: Literally piercing his skin, and…
- 15:27Lee Woods: his face literally saying, help, right? Yeah.
- 15:31Tad Eggleston: Well, as he's saying, I'm fine, just a small burn from the hot place, but the face… Yeah. Help.
- 15:38Tad Eggleston: With the tide coming in.
- 15:41Lee Woods: It's like, oh… Analyze that, right? He's about to be swept away in the current, about to drown, right?
- 15:47Tad Eggleston: That's right.
- 15:48Lee Woods: He's sinking, and to me, it was just that…
- 15:52Lee Woods: That sense of hopelessness, but also…
- 15:55Lee Woods: quite literally, a cry for help, and you see it written on his face, so it's…
- 16:01Matt & Belle: But, you know, I grabbed it as, like, this is the one time I'm gonna actually say it, and then the water's gonna take it away, and I'm not gonna say it again.
- 16:10Lee Woods: Interesting.
- 16:11Tad Eggleston: too?
- 16:12Josh Eiserike: Oh.
- 16:14Tad Eggleston: So, like, we've seen that the robots can't always control what's on their face.
- 16:18Matt & Belle: Yup.
- 16:19Tad Eggleston: So I don't know that he knows it's there.
- 16:23Josh Eiserike: I thought this was handled exceptionally well. Like, it didn't feel heavy-handed, it didn't feel kind of over the top, it just felt like…
- 16:33Josh Eiserike: He's really struggling, he might not be getting what he needs.
- 16:37Josh Eiserike: And we're not being hit over the head with it.
- 16:42Josh Eiserike: like, it feels like, oh, like, he could be going down the path of being one of those incels or whatever. Just, like, completely online all the time, and really struggling, but, like, the story beats didn't… like, it didn't feel like there were too… it felt like it was…
- 16:55Josh Eiserike: just the right amount, and I want to contrast it. I just saw, I'm not gonna spoil it, and I quite liked it, the new Toy Story movie.
- 17:03Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 17:04Josh Eiserike: Which… which is quite good, and I felt the first act was very heavy-handed about screen time. Even, even as I agree with it. So I thought, I thought this was handled really, really well.
- 17:19Lee Woods: And that's also, Matt, to your point, a really good, sort of observation there, that sometimes, clinically as well.
- 17:26Lee Woods: Whether you're dealing with, like, self-harm thoughts, suicidal thoughts, or even, like, trauma, is people will tend to… clients, patients will tend to dip their toes, in air quotes here, dip their toes to see if the water is safe before really diving in.
- 17:41Lee Woods: So that sort of image there, also, that's what sparked that thought for me, so that's a very good point as well.
- 17:51Matt & Belle: I'm just glad Alana's getting him the help he needs now, even though it splits the family, which we know always creates drama for them. I'm also really glad that he's able to do something, and they have people they know that have recommended something good for him, because I do, like, in the end, want Squire to be okay. It just stresses me out that they're split.
- 18:09Josh Eiserike: I… I agree.
- 18:11Josh Eiserike: Bell, and I'm… having had friends whose siblings have gone to stuff like that, I'm…
- 18:18Josh Eiserike: concerned for Squire. I don't… I have no idea how it's gonna play out, I'm concerned for him.
- 18:23Matt & Belle: to that point, that crystal that will bring them together instantly if they summon it, use it, whatever, I feel like that's either gonna be a huge plot point, or a nothing.
- 18:35Matt & Belle: And I'm… I'm tired!
- 18:37Tad Eggleston: Well, I'll go a step… second step, just because, like.
- 18:42Tad Eggleston: we know at the… at the end of this, there's… there's heavy, heavy insinuation that it's gonna be a lot longer before they see each other again than just the two months, because they go off to see Alana's father, and, you know, what could go wrong?
- 18:58Matt & Belle: wrong.
- 18:58Tad Eggleston: Because this is only Saga.
- 19:01Tad Eggleston: Like, the question then becomes, like.
- 19:07Tad Eggleston: If it gets used, is it a major plot point for the good, or does it make everything worse?
- 19:13Tad Eggleston: I could see it being… I can see it saving the day, and I can see it just, like…
- 19:17Matt & Belle: Fucking up their day.
- 19:18Tad Eggleston: Fucking things up tenfold.
- 19:20Matt & Belle: Yup, I love it.
- 19:22Matt & Belle: It's, it's such a, it's such a MacGuffin. It could go either way.
- 19:26Tad Eggleston: Speaking of fucked up… Who saw Gwendolyn seeing her naked, bloody Marco?
- 19:35Matt & Belle: I don't know.
- 19:35Tad Eggleston: is on.
- 19:39Matt & Belle: It was such a fuck you to the will, I feel like.
- 19:43Tad Eggleston: That too, yes.
- 19:47Tad Eggleston: I don't think they can see the same things when they're on.
- 19:50Matt & Belle: On the drugs?
- 19:51Josh Eiserike: No.
- 19:52Tad Eggleston: But… but still… Kinda, kinda fucked up.
- 19:59Tad Eggleston: As is this next page, where, where,
- 20:04Tad Eggleston: We're… we're… I forget the name of the… the… circus owner.
- 20:11Tad Eggleston: is saying, Doc here knows how to fix every kind of boy bot and beast of the field.
- 20:16Tad Eggleston: And the doc is reading Introduction to Robot Biology in the style of Robot Biology for Dummies.
- 20:24Josh Eiserike: And I love that spaceship, like, the big top spaceship.
- 20:29Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah.
- 20:29Josh Eiserike: Awesome. Awesome.
- 20:30Tad Eggleston: But with the… huh! So they all have blue blood, not just their royals.
- 20:38Tad Eggleston: It's great.
- 20:40Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:42Tad Eggleston: I love that Squire wears a Carney hoodie.
- 20:45Matt & Belle: Yep.
- 20:49Matt & Belle: Did we get to that, full-page spread yet, where,
- 20:54Matt & Belle: Hazel's saying, I hate you, because I want to talk about the bullshit. No, I don't.
- 20:58Tad Eggleston: That's coming up.
- 20:59Matt & Belle: That's the beginning of the message.
- 21:01Lee Woods: Whoa, spoiler!
- 21:03Matt & Belle: in the…
- 21:05Tad Eggleston: People listening to this know that they should read the
- 21:09Tad Eggleston: volumes first. They've had, like, a year.
- 21:12Matt & Belle: Exactly. Right.
- 21:14Matt & Belle: But I just, I love this full.
- 21:16Tad Eggleston: I mean, I think even if we start doing single issues, we need to arrange it so it's, like, 2 weeks after it came out.
- 21:23Matt & Belle: That's fair.
- 21:25Tad Eggleston: You know, maybe, maybe.
- 21:26Lee Woods: Thursday afternoon.
- 21:27Tad Eggleston: It's been, like, the week before the next one comes out.
- 21:32Lee Woods: Nope, Wednesday, new release day, podcast Thursday.
- 21:35Matt & Belle: I still won't read it till the night before the podcast.
- 21:37Lee Woods: And how about this?
- 21:43Tad Eggleston: She shut Lioncat up.
- 21:46Tad Eggleston: And it looks pretty clear to me that LionCat could have told her that she needed to… to…
- 21:54Tad Eggleston: think twice. Well, actually, it is Lioncat.
- 21:59Tad Eggleston: Thinking that it's a lie that the robot is telling?
- 22:04Matt & Belle: I don't think I'm lying.
- 22:05Tad Eggleston: cat, upset.
- 22:06Tad Eggleston: that… They're agreeing to kill the.
- 22:10Matt & Belle: Oh, yeah. I don't think Lion Cat can hear anything. I think she's completely secluded in that little…
- 22:16Matt & Belle: force field there. Maybe the blackout in that panel, right,
- 22:22Matt & Belle: In the middle of the page that you were showing. Where she says, sometimes too loyal? Too loyal?
- 22:26Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 22:26Matt & Belle: not something that LionCat can hear. Maybe that blackout is to, like, show or indicate that, like, there's no hearing in there, maybe. That's my interpretation on it.
- 22:35Tad Eggleston: Yeah?
- 22:35Matt & Belle: Doesn'.
- 22:36Lee Woods: Oh, interesting.
- 22:38Lee Woods: I didn't read it that way.
- 22:41Tad Eggleston: But it's still such a great face.
- 22:43Lee Woods: Yeah.
- 22:44Tad Eggleston: I read it as, like, she was preventing Lion Cat from… Guess it might be hearing.
- 22:54Tad Eggleston: Certainly from being able to… to… to… to talk, talk.
- 22:59Josh Eiserike: That's how I read it.
- 23:01Lee Woods: Yes.
- 23:03Matt & Belle: Well, that face says, I can't hear what's being said, so I can't help, and now I…
- 23:07Tad Eggleston: See, and I… and I thought that… I thought that face said, I can hear exactly what's being said, and I can't help.
- 23:16Matt & Belle: Either way, but yeah, no, it's true. Or it could straight up be, I hear it, and it's true.
- 23:21Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 23:22Matt & Belle: You know?
- 23:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, I mean, again, depending on where the overall loyalties are. Not lying, she's gonna kill Will.
- 23:31Lee Woods: Well, now I gotta go back and see… can we see the inside of a lioncat's ears? Is that what that means?
- 23:43Lee Woods: Very, very dark.
- 23:45Matt & Belle: I mean, we have a slight…
- 23:46Lee Woods: I'm not gonna lie, my mind's a little blown right now. I don't know.
- 23:50Tad Eggleston: There's the Thank you.
- 23:52Matt & Belle: I love it.
- 23:53Tad Eggleston: Oh my god.
- 23:54Matt & Belle: It's so beautiful. It's so 12.
- 24:01Matt & Belle: Oh, and then her, like, with the, with the striped tights in the, like, ugh, it's so good.
- 24:08Matt & Belle: It's just so 12. I appreciate it.
- 24:11Matt & Belle: With your canvas shoes that went up to here? Yeah, I wore high top, converse. Super high top comp. Super high top converse that went all the way up my calf in middle school.
- 24:22Matt & Belle: Sounds great.
- 24:24Lee Woods: I love the double tumbler.
- 24:26Tad Eggleston: I love… I love him. Rah! And the black and white sun face.
- 24:39Lee Woods: Just the double thumbs up, just, like, tricky to it.
- 24:43Matt & Belle: That's total funds!
- 24:55Tad Eggleston: I love this line, too, of course not, I just want to get better.
- 25:05Tad Eggleston: Just wanna get better.
- 25:09Lee Woods: Yeah.
- 25:10Matt & Belle: Only for a few months. Months! Yeah.
- 25:12Lee Woods: That's good stuff.
- 25:13Tad Eggleston: I barely know her!
- 25:15Lee Woods: Dude.
- 25:16Lee Woods: That… this is the part, like, with volumes 11 and 12, just.
- 25:20Tad Eggleston: Did you notice the, the gasoline from the tits in the back?
- 25:25Matt & Belle: Yeah.
- 25:25Josh Eiserike: Oh, I noticed it.
- 25:27Matt & Belle: How do you miss it?
- 25:28Matt & Belle: It's so saga.
- 25:31Lee Woods: Wait, there's something else on this panel? I don't…
- 25:40Tad Eggleston: Damn clowns.
- 25:41Matt & Belle: I hate that, I hate that motherfucker, that first guy, I hate that guy.
- 25:46Matt & Belle: I'm so glad that…
- 25:47Tad Eggleston: Corgi is so cute.
- 25:50Tad Eggleston: The winged corgi?
- 25:52Matt & Belle: So, did everyone think that?
- 25:54Matt & Belle: That, Feld was the… informant for… The Secret Service?
- 26:02Tad Eggleston: Initially, I thought it was the clown, and then I thought it was filled.
- 26:09Matt & Belle: I immediately thought it was foul to then, and then when it wasn't, I was like, thank God.
- 26:14Tad Eggleston: Well, at the… at the very… well, cause… cause, like, I talked about this a little bit before, like, the first time we know…
- 26:22Tad Eggleston: First time Will gets the phone call…
- 26:25Tad Eggleston: The one that he hangs up on, because he doesn't care.
- 26:29Tad Eggleston: is… I wanna say right after she's… pissed off.
- 26:39Tad Eggleston: the…
- 26:48Matt & Belle: Oh, I think you missed it, I think you went back too far.
- 26:51Tad Eggleston: Okay, so she just pissed this guy off.
- 26:55Tad Eggleston: And then we see Feld.
- 26:57Tad Eggleston: But everything with Feld is… is pretty good.
- 27:01Lee Woods: Yeah.
- 27:01Tad Eggleston: And THEN we get the phone call. Yup. So I…
- 27:05Tad Eggleston: I mean, I guess it kind of sets up the possibility of both of them, but I was thinking it was the clown at that point.
- 27:11Matt & Belle: No, I didn't even consider the clown at this point. Same here.
- 27:15Tad Eggleston: But then, when… when you later have Fel have to take that phone call, Where, you know… he's…
- 27:25Matt & Belle: Making up his own conversations.
- 27:27Tad Eggleston: I can't talk right now.
- 27:32Matt & Belle: And the instructional space, at the last panel. Yep.
- 27:37Matt & Belle: It just had a… it was like a guilty look, like, that he didn't like what I was… yeah.
- 27:42Matt & Belle: Where you give the deadpan stare. Yes.
- 27:44Tad Eggleston: here.
- 27:45Matt & Belle: No, the next one.
- 27:47Lee Woods: No, all the way. There you go.
- 27:49Matt & Belle: That one.
- 27:49Tad Eggleston: Well, no. No, at this point, I knew that he… this is the point where I was certain that it was felt.
- 27:56Matt & Belle: That was… that's the nefarious one.
- 27:58Tad Eggleston: Clown, it's spelled.
- 27:59Lee Woods: Yeah.
- 28:00Matt & Belle: Yup.
- 28:01Tad Eggleston: Which is why I became so happy.
- 28:06Tad Eggleston: Well, and then when Feld is assigned the find out who's making the calls, I'm like, oh, oh, so you're gonna have Steve Bannon
- 28:16Tad Eggleston: investigate the J6ers. Makes… makes perfect sense.
- 28:20Matt & Belle: Exactly.
- 28:25Tad Eggleston: But then… But then they catch the clown, and I feel better, but I'm still wondering about Feld.
- 28:34Matt & Belle: Yup, absolutely.
- 28:35Tad Eggleston: And then what Feld is, is, like, a total. And how cool is this crab?
- 28:42Matt & Belle: Oh, yeah, that takes a while, yeah. That's pretty badass.
- 28:47Tad Eggleston: Well, it reminds me of Cloak and Dagger.
- 28:50Matt & Belle: Yes, exactly.
- 28:51Josh Eiserike: Oh, yeah.
- 28:52Tad Eggleston: Just, just walk in!
- 28:54Matt & Belle: Yup, come on in!
- 29:01Tad Eggleston: And, like, A camp t-shirt.
- 29:04Tad Eggleston: A canoe on a lake.
- 29:10Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 29:12Lee Woods: I… I love the… sorry, this… Alana's… sorry, are you asking for my pronouns, or…
- 29:18Matt & Belle: Everyone, what are you? Oh my god, they're skish when they give him a hug?
- 29:23Lee Woods: Yeah.
- 29:24Matt & Belle: Oh my god, my heart.
- 29:27Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 29:27Matt & Belle: It was the cutest.
- 29:28Tad Eggleston: Well, and, and, and, and Emesis.
- 29:33Tad Eggleston: With the tears.
- 29:35Lee Woods: From her eight eyes.
- 29:37Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 29:44Tad Eggleston: Now, is this… I feel like we've seen this guy before.
- 29:51Matt & Belle: Reminds me of more in King Julian.
- 29:53Tad Eggleston: Oh, no, no, I know what he reminds me of. He reminds me of Kurti. So we haven't seen him before, he's just the same race as…
- 30:04Tad Eggleston: as… as the, the, the, the family on Fang.
- 30:09Matt & Belle: He reminds me of Morty from Rick and Morty.
- 30:13Josh Eiserike: With the eyes, yeah.
- 30:21Tad Eggleston: And this is where we find out, okay, it's the dickhead clown.
- 30:27Tad Eggleston: This is a great cover.
- 30:29Matt & Belle: It is.
- 30:33Tad Eggleston: This is great. Smash… splash page.
- 30:44Lee Woods: Sorry.
- 30:48Tad Eggleston: I do love the chicken being tossed to the…
- 30:52Matt & Belle: Fluish?
- 30:53Matt & Belle: And I love when Countess, the Tenth comes in every time. She's got this, like, pixely encore with it. Which she's downloading. It's just… it's beautiful. It's beautiful worldbuilding. I love that.
- 31:07Tad Eggleston: finds the completely strung-out Gwendolyn.
- 31:10Matt & Belle: Junkie Gwendolyn.
- 31:13Tad Eggleston: Accidentally kicks over the stove.
- 31:16Matt & Belle: Oh, it didn't look like an accident to me.
- 31:18Tad Eggleston: I, I, I'm aware.
- 31:21Lee Woods: Oh, yeah, the accidental echo.
- 31:23Matt & Belle: Oops.
- 31:26Matt & Belle: Did I do that?
- 31:29Josh Eiserike: that one.
- 31:36Tad Eggleston: Will remembering. Baby Lion Cat.
- 31:41Tad Eggleston: And doesn't re… I think he's talking to himself and doesn't realize it.
- 31:45Matt & Belle: Yep, absolutely.
- 31:47Josh Eiserike: That's how I read it.
- 31:48Matt & Belle: Dang!
- 31:52Tad Eggleston: You're not a bad guy. Lying.
- 32:01Tad Eggleston: So, here, we need votes. We need votes. Who thinks that him shouting lying means that he didn't get up?
- 32:09Tad Eggleston: He dies in the fire. And who thinks that his young self saves him?
- 32:17Tad Eggleston: I'm with Bill, and I think this is when he finally gets it. But I'll also acknowledge that there's a lot of wish casting in that.
- 32:26Matt & Belle: The Will has a lot of plot armor, so I'm thinking he survives. Unfortunately, probably, but I wanna be… I wanna be… say he dies.
- 32:38Matt & Belle: So I'm hoping for the fire to engulf him and him to do something.
- 32:42Josh Eiserike: I'm gonna get to this moment, which is… which is incredible. I'm going to… Because it's the unexpected move?
- 32:51Josh Eiserike: I wouldn't be surprised if he's dead.
- 32:54Tad Eggleston: Josh is going with dead.
- 32:56Matt & Belle: I don't think so.
- 32:57Josh Eiserike: I don't… I don't think he is, but I'm not certain, because…
- 33:03Josh Eiserike: In a book like this, giving a character like that just, like, an unceremonious, kind of, like, almost real-life send-off.
- 33:13Tad Eggleston: is, like, perfect.
- 33:14Josh Eiserike: It's kind of heartbreaking and kind of perfect, yeah.
- 33:18Matt & Belle: No one's around, he just dies on his own. Yeah. No one cares.
- 33:23Tad Eggleston: His subconscious.
- 33:24Matt & Belle: Oh, Jack.
- 33:24Tad Eggleston: Literally tries to save him, and he refuses.
- 33:28Matt & Belle: Like, he's… he deserves an unremarkable death. He's committed atrocities.
- 33:33Tad Eggleston: I could see him having one more scene to make certain that we know that he's dead.
- 33:39Josh Eiserike: Yeah. I'm, I'm, I'm going 60-40 that he's dead.
- 33:45Tad Eggleston: Lee?
- 33:46Lee Woods: I… I think he's alive.
- 33:49Tad Eggleston: You think he's alive?
- 33:50Lee Woods: My thought process there with the sort of sleep in the lying.
- 33:57Lee Woods: is that, obviously, the unconscious has come to the conscious now, and especially when sleep, some people get so enamored in their sleep and so, aroused, like, activated in their sleep, that they can wake themselves up from it. And I think we're seeing a sneak peek.
- 34:12Lee Woods: of him…
- 34:14Tad Eggleston: I'm hoping that it's just late enough that he gets to feel all the pain.
- 34:20Lee Woods: I'm trying to take my feelings out of a tad, but… Out of your.
- 34:24Matt & Belle: Relatable.
- 34:26Lee Woods: I, I think.
- 34:28Tad Eggleston: I don't wish harm on many people, real or imaginative.
- 34:33Lee Woods: It's not real.
- 34:36Lee Woods: I…
- 34:40Tad Eggleston: I'm the live and let live guy.
- 34:43Tad Eggleston: Most of the time.
- 34:45Matt & Belle: Unless your name's Will.
- 34:47Lee Woods: Yeah.
- 34:48Matt & Belle: based up there.
- 34:48Tad Eggleston: The will.
- 34:49Matt & Belle: million volumes.
- 34:51Tad Eggleston: I can handle wills.
- 34:53Matt & Belle: Even okay.
- 34:54Tad Eggleston: with Will fucking Clark.
- 34:55Tad Eggleston: But THE will?
- 34:59Lee Woods: I… So maybe this is where my, sort of, Naivety comes in.
- 35:04Lee Woods: I don't think he's dead, because I don't think his story is done.
- 35:09Matt & Belle: Clearly.
- 35:11Josh Eiserike: I agree.
- 35:13Matt & Belle: He is gonna play a major role.
- 35:14Tad Eggleston: his Anakin Skywalker moment, and the next time we see him, he'll be a big, big half… half-man, half-machine.
- 35:22Matt & Belle: Could be, and he'll save the day, inadvertently or something.
- 35:27Matt & Belle: I think it's involved with Squire, because we don't know where Squire's going. That's true. We don't know where the Will is going, so that would be a really interesting way to marry the two stories again.
- 35:36Matt & Belle: In kind of a more redemption-seeking way, too, since he did kill Prince Robot. So actually, that might be an interesting prediction to hold onto.
- 35:43Tad Eggleston: No, I don't wanna like the will.
- 35:46Matt & Belle: I don't either, but Squire might need someone to save this, because we don't know where Squire is.
- 35:51Tad Eggleston: I don't want to like the will.
- 35:55Tad Eggleston: Alright, how about…
- 35:57Lee Woods: I guess those…
- 35:57Tad Eggleston: diesel.
- 35:58Lee Woods: I guess I need to qualify this, too, just so it's out there. Yeah, I do…
- 36:03Lee Woods: I do think he's alive. If I put my feelings into it, I think he's gonna die a much more horrible death than me being burned alive.
- 36:09Matt & Belle: Yes, but for a good purpose, or a good reason.
- 36:13Matt & Belle: He's gonna redeem himself. I just feel like he's gonna redeem himself, and I don't want it, but that's what's gonna happen.
- 36:18Lee Woods: Nope, I don't think…
- 36:18Josh Eiserike: I think he gets the Michael Corleone death, whether it's here or later.
- 36:23Josh Eiserike: It's kind of, like, lonely.
- 36:25Josh Eiserike: Of old age, and that's it.
- 36:28Matt & Belle: death. He betrayed someone, but now he's gonna do the right thing.
- 36:33Tad Eggleston: Fishing…
- 36:34Matt & Belle: Last act, I don't… yeah, I kind of…
- 36:37Tad Eggleston: Leave the gun, take the cannoli.
- 36:41Matt & Belle: Exactly.
- 36:43Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 36:46Tad Eggleston: What do we think on Hazel?
- 36:48Matt & Belle: She threw a lot better, just because of the horns.
- 36:52Tad Eggleston: Well, cause she was caught off guard.
- 37:00Tad Eggleston: And, and, and, and maybe she doesn't like horns.
- 37:04Tad Eggleston: I don't know.
- 37:06Tad Eggleston: Though, I just saw this fantastic gramophone horn in the background here.
- 37:13Matt & Belle: Yep.
- 37:14Tad Eggleston: Fuck, man, that's awesome.
- 37:16Matt & Belle: I do love the shading on that panel, though, where she's… she's saying here, and she's, like, driven off the necklace. It makes it look so ethereal. Like, Hazel's true form is very ethereal. Like, she's a very.
- 37:26Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah. Well, she's an angel.
- 37:28Matt & Belle: Yeah, really.
- 37:28Tad Eggleston: level.
- 37:31Tad Eggleston: Wait a minute, is she the new idea from Preacher?
- 37:46Tad Eggleston: Ugh… I've read too many comics.
- 37:52Lee Woods: True.
- 37:53Matt & Belle: And the corner is clipped on the panel of her…
- 37:56Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I still haven't figured out why corners get clipped.
- 38:01Tad Eggleston: Still working on that.
- 38:02Matt & Belle: look at…
- 38:02Tad Eggleston: This one's clipped too.
- 38:04Matt & Belle: Yup.
- 38:05Matt & Belle: And the bottom… and go back a page, the bottom tails clipped on the lower right.
- 38:10Lee Woods: Yep.
- 38:16Matt & Belle: See ya?
- 38:17Tad Eggleston: I do.
- 38:20Matt & Belle: Oh, did anyone catch the microphone that had an ear?
- 38:23Matt & Belle: Popping out of it.
- 38:25Tad Eggleston: Where was that?
- 38:26Matt & Belle: Oh, what? When, when, when, when, the blue…
- 38:31Matt & Belle: When the reporter is interviewing the…
- 38:34Matt & Belle: The microphone is just a stick with an ear on the end of it. Oh, we haven't gotten there yet. Okay.
- 38:40Tad Eggleston: Okay, that's coming up.
- 38:42Matt & Belle: It is, and it's a crazy moment, too. I fucking love it.
- 38:45Tad Eggleston: But nobody's given real thoughts. Is Hazel too trusting?
- 38:50Matt & Belle: I think she is, but…
- 38:51Tad Eggleston: Is this gonna work out okay?
- 38:53Matt & Belle: I don't think this one is gonna bite her in the ass. I think she's okay with this one, just because of how she said, my best friend for life, in the previous, like, narration, so we know this is a good one already from people.
- 39:02Tad Eggleston: But we also know already that, like.
- 39:05Tad Eggleston: Sometimes they go… like, Prince Robot became a friend of theirs. We all grudgingly wound up liking Prince Robot by the end.
- 39:16Josh Eiserike: Yup.
- 39:18Matt & Belle: True.
- 39:20Matt & Belle: Yeah, even though he killed Marco.
- 39:24Tad Eggleston: Prince Robot didn't kill Marco.
- 39:25Matt & Belle: No, you're right, it was the will.
- 39:27Tad Eggleston: Yay!
- 39:28Matt & Belle: Yeah.
- 39:29Tad Eggleston: The will killed Prince Robot!
- 39:31Matt & Belle: Right.
- 39:32Tad Eggleston: That's another reason that we don't like the will.
- 39:34Matt & Belle: Exactly, yes! Sorry, my brain went and twisted on me. I just like Emesis. I just, I want to be Team Emesis so bad. I want Hazel to have a friend so bad.
- 39:44Tad Eggleston: I do think it's cool that it's the same species as the stalk.
- 39:49Matt & Belle: I do too.
- 39:50Matt & Belle: And isn't it the same species that taught her how to play guitar on the pirate ship?
- 39:54Tad Eggleston: Maybe?
- 39:56Lee Woods: Missing the fangs.
- 39:58Lee Woods: But I think so.
- 40:03Lee Woods: Yeah, I… yes.
- 40:05Lee Woods: Hazel is too trusting, but also, I wonder, too, up until this point.
- 40:11Lee Woods: How many… just how many, stable relationships she's had.
- 40:15Josh Eiserike: Yeah…
- 40:17Lee Woods: So then… Being able to connect with someone around her same age.
- 40:22Lee Woods: It's like, oh yeah, here's my life story.
- 40:25Lee Woods: Without understanding, like, the repercussions, because who knows? You may never…
- 40:31Lee Woods: Get to really connect with somebody again.
- 40:38Matt & Belle: Yeah, it's good for her.
- 40:40Lee Woods: It's what she wants.
- 40:41Matt & Belle: Right now.
- 40:41Lee Woods: I don't know.
- 40:44Lee Woods: I don't know, maybe it's just because I'm too traumatized by BKV's writing, but… I'm like, I'm just waiting for it to drop. That's… okay. They know now.
- 40:53Matt & Belle: Cause you know it's gonna.
- 40:54Josh Eiserike: Yup!
- 40:56Tad Eggleston: I, I, I do, I do love the,
- 41:06Tad Eggleston: I love the knife to the eye.
- 41:09Matt & Belle: Yeah, and the shank, shank, shank, that's great.
- 41:12Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 41:14Lee Woods: Heh.
- 41:15Josh Eiserike: And a nice little transition to the dinner.
- 41:17Lee Woods: I tell you, love that.
- 41:19Tad Eggleston: Though this also broke my heart to find out she was shooting herself with the heartbreaker.
- 41:24Matt & Belle: Yeah, that was pretty sad.
- 41:26Tad Eggleston: Ugh…
- 41:32Matt & Belle: But even, like, even she gets, like, a slight bit vulnerable, and then she senses it, and she just immediately is back to normal Alana.
- 41:39Tad Eggleston: Called her by her name.
- 41:40Matt & Belle: cover for.
- 41:40Tad Eggleston: He called her by her name.
- 41:42Matt & Belle: Yup. Yup.
- 41:44Matt & Belle: Fuck, do you know my name, bitch?
- 41:46Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 41:47Lee Woods: Wait, wait, can we go back to the…
- 41:51Tad Eggleston: I do love… Private dick.
- 41:53Lee Woods: I love… you're a jigolo?
- 41:55Josh Eiserike: There you go.
- 41:55Lee Woods: Like.
- 41:56Matt & Belle: Yeah.
- 41:57Josh Eiserike: Scoping.
- 41:58Lee Woods: I agree.
- 42:00Tad Eggleston: What? No!
- 42:02Matt & Belle: I'm an independent, an independent individual!
- 42:04Tad Eggleston: investigator, then say that!
- 42:06Matt & Belle: It's, it's, like, rough to develop.
- 42:08Tad Eggleston: Say those!
- 42:08Matt & Belle: Louis, hear what you're saying?
- 42:18Tad Eggleston: Oh… This is the first time we've seen a lot of, like…
- 42:24Matt & Belle: Vulnerable?
- 42:25Tad Eggleston: Vulnerable in a while.
- 42:26Matt & Belle: Yep.
- 42:28Tad Eggleston: And then we get to see Goose vulnerable.
- 42:33Tad Eggleston: I do love that the police stand by. Is the camera aimed at the king's head?
- 42:42Matt & Belle: Yeah, stealth.
- 42:44Josh Eiserike: This felt very Trumpy to me.
- 42:48Josh Eiserike: Very trumpy.
- 42:50Tad Eggleston: And that it's 10 is the teleprompter.
- 42:54Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 42:57Matt & Belle: It was so robot kingdom, honestly, it was done perfectly for them. Yep. And I love that the cameras are always eyeballs. Yep. And speakers are mouths, that's great.
- 43:05Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah. We wish the best to our longtime allies.
- 43:11Tad Eggleston: Now, for the good of our people, we must forge a new special relationship. So effective immediately, the robot kingdom henceforth stands united with the moon of Wreath.
- 43:23Tad Eggleston: us all. It's like, wait a minute.
- 43:25Josh Eiserike: Thank you for your attention to this matter.
- 43:27Matt & Belle: What's the matter?
- 43:28Tad Eggleston: We wish the best to our allies, and now we stand with their enemies.
- 43:36Josh Eiserike: And there's… what's his name? Bombazier?
- 43:39Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Bomba… Bombazine. Bombazine.
- 43:41Josh Eiserike: Bombazelle? Bombazier? I don't remember. Bombazier?
- 43:43Tad Eggleston: It's right here.
- 43:45Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 43:46Tad Eggleston: So, he… he… it looks like he'll be coming back.
- 43:50Tad Eggleston: That's the feeling I get. I mean, for that matter, this… this has me feeling like… like,
- 43:59Tad Eggleston: special edition ending to Return of the Jedi.
- 44:05Matt & Belle: Nope.
- 44:07Tad Eggleston: Let's go see how the news is taken all over the galaxy.
- 44:13Matt & Belle: Holy Gosh Almighty! Pardon, Courtney Goose's blasphemy!
- 44:17Matt & Belle: I love goose! Part of Goose is blasphemous. I just love Goose.
- 44:22Tad Eggleston: Say it was warranted.
- 44:23Matt & Belle: Artifacts.
- 44:26Matt & Belle: He's my favorite.
- 44:27Josh Eiserike: Butters from South Park, every time I see goose.
- 44:30Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 44:34Tad Eggleston: I love the laughter from… Agent Gale.
- 44:39Matt & Belle: Yeah.
- 44:44Matt & Belle: No, because Gail knows things, so that scares me.
- 44:47Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah?
- 44:49Tad Eggleston: Backstabbing androids just gave my leaders permission to unleash every secret weapon from our most forbidden arsenals.
- 44:55Matt & Belle: Personality, yup.
- 44:59Tad Eggleston: I love how we didn't see anything about Petracor and… and…
- 45:04Matt & Belle: The teacher…
- 45:04Tad Eggleston: Maureen getting together, we just… When we get to here, it's like, oh!
- 45:10Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah, of course. Okay.
- 45:12Lee Woods: Yeah, of course.
- 45:13Matt & Belle: But you know what? Didn't bother me at all.
- 45:15Tad Eggleston: No, I loved it! I loved it!
- 45:18Matt & Belle: With the 1970s fireplace, I mean, this is.
- 45:21Tad Eggleston: Awesome!
- 45:21Matt & Belle: so…
- 45:22Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 45:26Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, it's in, it's in, like, the Triangle House.
- 45:29Josh Eiserike: A-frame.
- 45:31Tad Eggleston: A-frame, yeah.
- 45:32Matt & Belle: Yeah.
- 45:35Josh Eiserike: I mean.
- 45:35Matt & Belle: Congratulations!
- 45:37Josh Eiserike: Sorry, go ahead, go ahead.
- 45:38Matt & Belle: Oh, I also googled, I googled what Elacato meant.
- 45:43Tad Eggleston: What does it mean?
- 45:43Matt & Belle: to know exactly what that meant. It's redemption.
- 45:46Tad Eggleston: Wow.
- 45:47Matt & Belle: I googled it. I googled it to know exactly.
- 45:49Tad Eggleston: I knew that.
- 45:50Matt & Belle: Because I was like, I need to know what Petrichor's after, because I was… I was really glad.
- 45:54Tad Eggleston: That's…
- 45:54Matt & Belle: Before I was introduced again, we didn't see, her for a really.
- 45:57Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 45:57Matt & Belle: No, not retribution, redemption. Redemption. Gotcha.
- 46:01Tad Eggleston: Well, and there's…
- 46:02Matt & Belle: Prior to that.
- 46:03Tad Eggleston: There's grandma. So what do you want to bet part of redemption's actually getting Grandma out of prison and back to…
- 46:10Matt & Belle: That's what I think. If Grandma's willing to go, she'd had the chance before.
- 46:14Tad Eggleston: Well, but if she's getting more people out of prison, she might be willing to.
- 46:18Matt & Belle: Yeah, that's true.
- 46:19Tad Eggleston: She's able to show…
- 46:21Matt & Belle: And now that she's on the side of the powerful… Right, right. Yeah, yeah, anything's possible. And she also has Noreen on her side, so…
- 46:28Tad Eggleston: I do love that, that, that you've already got,
- 46:36Tad Eggleston: Gwendolyn and her wife back together.
- 46:41Matt & Belle: Yeah, but I feel like this cowgirl with the skunk on her shoulder is gonna either become a character.
- 46:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 46:48Matt & Belle: Why are they zooming in on her like that?
- 46:51Tad Eggleston: That was my next question, is this major foreshadowing, a total red herring, or am I supposed to remember her from somewhere?
- 47:01Josh Eiserike: I thought I had forgotten her.
- 47:05Lee Woods: I… I'm a sucker for a Chekhov's gun. I think everything's important, so…
- 47:13Lee Woods: I just… to me, in my head, she's Dolly Parton, so, yeah.
- 47:18Matt & Belle: I thought it was Jolene, but whatever.
- 47:20Lee Woods: Huh? Enjoy.
- 47:25Tad Eggleston: And how can Fiona make a skunk that cute?
- 47:28Matt & Belle: Yeah, tell me about it.
- 47:29Lee Woods: Yes.
- 47:30Matt & Belle: Ducks are super cute.
- 47:31Josh Eiserike: They're just smelly.
- 47:33Lee Woods: When scared, they can be.
- 47:35Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 47:36Tad Eggleston: And why… Lion Cat appears to be, like… Did he get abandoned by… Gwen and her honey?
- 47:45Tad Eggleston: Or did he…
- 47:46Josh Eiserike: Or that's just another flying pet.
- 47:48Tad Eggleston: I don't think so.
- 47:52Josh Eiserike: I don't answer.
- 47:53Tad Eggleston: Because if it was, I would expect him to be somewhere in the picture with Gwen and her honey.
- 48:03Lee Woods: Yeah, I took that as another lion cap.
- 48:05Lee Woods: That's interesting.
- 48:06Tad Eggleston: No, I think that's Lion Cat.
- 48:08Matt & Belle: V-Line cap.
- 48:09Tad Eggleston: Lion Cat.
- 48:12Tad Eggleston: I do love this scene, too.
- 48:14Matt & Belle: Oh, I really dug this.
- 48:16Josh Eiserike: Yeah, this was cool.
- 48:18Tad Eggleston: Why would he not tell us?
- 48:20Matt & Belle: Yup.
- 48:20Tad Eggleston: Because you're worthless. Well, I mean, that could be a reason.
- 48:25Matt & Belle: CYU.
- 48:26Tad Eggleston: On the other hand… Yeah.
- 48:30Matt & Belle: And I love how you totally think this guy's going down, and he just mows everyone else down.
- 48:40Josh Eiserike: Very Star Wars, what is it, like, Order 66, or whatever that stupid thing was? Yeah.
- 48:45Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 48:47Matt & Belle: It just shows how powerful the robot kingdom really is. It is, exactly, yes. Like, will Landfall even stand a chance without the Robot Kingdom, is what I'm thinking.
- 48:55Tad Eggleston: I mean, it all depends on what their secret weapons are, and how much they're willing to, like…
- 49:00Matt & Belle: Usually…
- 49:00Tad Eggleston: the Galaxy.
- 49:02Matt & Belle: I love the seashell spaceships, by the way, in the next, page.
- 49:06Matt & Belle: I… I collected seashells as a kid. I just sorted them, actually, today. So it was very… it was very on point for me to see the seashells. Oh, I dug the van with the dragon on the side, too. Oh, yeah.
- 49:17Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 49:19Matt & Belle: very.
- 49:20Tad Eggleston: Apropos.
- 49:21Matt & Belle: What's the word I'm looking for? Appropriate.
- 49:23Josh Eiserike: Yeah.
- 49:24Tad Eggleston: And that's where we…
- 49:33Lee Woods: This one was a… This one's a ride.
- 49:36Tad Eggleston: This is a total ride.
- 49:38Tad Eggleston: an amazing ride. Actually, you know what the van reminds me of?
- 49:43Tad Eggleston: Spaceballs.
- 49:45Josh Eiserike: Yo, yeah.
- 49:45Matt & Belle: It's a cross between Spaceballs and the shuttle from the first Star Trek show.
- 49:51Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 49:54Tad Eggleston: With a dragon.
- 49:56Tad Eggleston: the size.
- 49:58Matt & Belle: Two men, there's not a wizard on it.
- 50:04Tad Eggleston: Ugh… Why do I have to wait so long for the next volume?
- 50:09Matt & Belle: I know. I actually was on the phone with a friend earlier today, and I've been trying to get this friend into Saga for the longest time. Turns out his best friend is now reading Saga. Now he has two friends reading Saga telling him to read Saga, and I didn't even mean to get the other guy into it, but he read it anyway, and he's real far into the series now.
- 50:26Tad Eggleston: I mean, it looks like they've got, Lapidia Nyangao…
- 50:30Tad Eggleston: the, the, the Maz Kanata volunteered to Vanity Fair that, that she loves saga.
- 50:39Tad Eggleston: At least, I can't imagine Vanity Fair would have been asking her about Saga to get the poll quote.
- 50:46Tad Eggleston: That had to have come up with in, like, the… the…
- 50:50Tad Eggleston: What are you reading, what do you love, type.
- 50:53Tad Eggleston: Question.
- 50:54Matt & Belle: Yeah.
- 50:54Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 50:59Tad Eggleston: So… ugh.
- 51:03Tad Eggleston: I don't even know what's coming next.
- 51:05Matt & Belle: I'm scared.
- 51:06Tad Eggleston: I think that's what… I'm scared, I'm hopeful…
- 51:10Lee Woods: I'm ready, I've just… I… I'm ready. I'm diving in.
- 51:14Tad Eggleston: Definitely ready to be reading again?
- 51:16Matt & Belle: I'm glad I all caught up.
- 51:18Tad Eggleston: Hopefully it's sooner rather than later.
- 51:21Tad Eggleston: Cause, like, the longer I have to wait to see more, the harder it will be.
- 51:28Josh Eiserike: So… the issues that will make up Volume 13 haven't started yet, is that correct?
- 51:34Tad Eggleston: No.
- 51:35Matt & Belle: I knew, yeah.
- 51:36Tad Eggleston: I think we're looking at October right now. Yeah. That's why at the beginning of the episode, I said we're gonna have to come up with something to read for, like, the next…
- 51:45Tad Eggleston: July, August, September, at least 3 months.
- 51:49Matt & Belle: It's good, it's good. I need it, because I'll be into my PhD by the time.
- 51:52Tad Eggleston: It's more.
- 51:53Matt & Belle: a book, and I need a comic book.
- 51:54Tad Eggleston: 4 months, because we probably shouldn't talk about the October issue until November. So we need to come up with.
- 52:00Matt & Belle: I'm with me. Day before the next one's released. Oh, yeah.
- 52:06Lee Woods: Hell yeah.
- 52:09Matt & Belle: We'll call it Spoiler Alert!
- 52:12Lee Woods: call it, if you know, you know.
- 52:14Tad Eggleston: I will never, ever be given an advance reader of a thing again.
- 52:19Matt & Belle: Yeah, no, I'm kidding, I'm teasing.
- 52:21Lee Woods: estimate.
- 52:22Matt & Belle: It's too funny.
- 52:25Tad Eggleston: We will have to record some sort of spoiler thing to put at the beginning of all the saga, you know. If you have not read issue number 7273, do not listen to this podcast!
- 52:41Lee Woods: Yeah.
- 52:42Matt & Belle: That's hilarious.
- 52:46Lee Woods: But we are on the same page about the… are we doing issue by issue, or are we doing…
- 52:50Tad Eggleston: I think we should do issue by issue when it comes.
- 52:51Matt & Belle: I do, too. And do a real deep dive, like, nitty-gritty. Yes.
- 52:56Matt & Belle: the detail on this panel on that page… It needs it. Saga deserved it, and we couldn't give it all to it, because there was too much…
- 53:03Tad Eggleston: But here's my question, and, and, like…
- 53:06Tad Eggleston: It'd be slightly denser reading, and I don't know if I have digital copies. Matt, do you have mind management?
- 53:13Matt & Belle: I have the first volume.
- 53:14Tad Eggleston: Only the first volume.
- 53:15Matt & Belle: Only the first volume.
- 53:17Matt & Belle: Okay. Hardcover.
- 53:20Tad Eggleston: Cool, but…
- 53:21Matt & Belle: Awesome, Matt, thanks!
- 53:26Tad Eggleston: But also, if you have the hardcover, you have the first volume, not the first compendium.
- 53:32Matt & Belle: First volume, that's what I said.
- 53:34Tad Eggleston: At this point, it's bought in compendiums, which are really, like, 3 volumes. Yes, yes, yes.
- 53:42Tad Eggleston: So, so that would be a bad one to do as our fill-in.
- 53:46Tad Eggleston: Boog, it'd be a tough one to do on a monthly basis. Well, wouldn't it be impossible to do on a monthly basis?
- 53:53Tad Eggleston: Doing compendiums at a time, but it's… it's not… They're not short reads.
- 53:59Lee Woods: Can I throw an idea out there, and feel free to throw it back at me. Sure. Is,
- 54:04Lee Woods: If staying on track with Saga, looking at or reading works by Fiona Staples and or Brian K. Vaughan.
- 54:11Tad Eggleston: I mean, Fiona hasn't done a ton of non-staples, or non-Saga stuff, she did…
- 54:17Josh Eiserike: tree.
- 54:18Tad Eggleston: She did 3 issues of Archie, she did, like, North Dallas something.
- 54:25Tad Eggleston: That was okay.
- 54:28Tad Eggleston: She's done a handful of… like… Stories here, stories there.
- 54:38Tad Eggleston: But, but, brian… Brian found… Fiona early.
- 54:46Tad Eggleston: And,
- 54:54Tad Eggleston: Come on.
- 54:56Josh Eiserike: For what it's worth, I loved spectators and would love to talk about that.
- 55:00Matt & Belle: That's a good one.
- 55:02Matt & Belle: I've read that.
- 55:03Lee Woods: You wanna talk about real-world issues? Holy crap.
- 55:07Tad Eggleston: God.
- 55:10Josh Eiserike: With some offers.
- 55:11Tad Eggleston: spectators.
- 55:12Lee Woods: I literally was just like, alright, like, I'm just gonna read this as, like, a… in bed, like, 9… 10, 10.30. And I'm like, I read it, I'm just like, okay, let me just read, like, a chapter or two.
- 55:27Lee Woods: I could not put that book down until, like, 2 AM.
- 55:31Josh Eiserike: Right?
- 55:31Lee Woods: finish it that night.
- 55:32Josh Eiserike: I was reading it as it was coming out, serialized. We should stop this conversation, we should talk about it next month. That's my pitch.
- 55:39Tad Eggleston: I do. I think… I think we should do… I think we should do Spectators. Yeah, let's do spectators.
- 55:45Matt & Belle: theaters. Sure.
- 55:46Tad Eggleston: I'm trying to decide if there's any Fiona interesting stuff for…
- 55:55Tad Eggleston: She was in 16 issues of… 2000 AD?
- 56:01Tad Eggleston: Might have to figure out…
- 56:03Tad Eggleston: Were they con- they were consecutive, so she must have had a story in 2000 AD. I'm gonna have to look that up.
- 56:11Tad Eggleston: North 40 was okay.
- 56:17Tad Eggleston: Dv8 was okay…
- 56:21Tad Eggleston: I mean, really, a lot of the issues are some of the other stuff that she's gotten to do, just the… the quality of the writing to go with it wasn't…
- 56:29Tad Eggleston: You could see her… And Brian did.
- 56:35Tad Eggleston: You can see her talent coming through, but… but… what was…
- 56:55Tad Eggleston: Authority Hawksmoor, I think, was the one.
- 57:02Tad Eggleston: That made him think that she could do this.
- 57:06Tad Eggleston: Who wrote that, though?
- 57:15Matt & Belle: bone?
- 57:16Tad Eggleston: Mike Costa? I mean…
- 57:18Matt & Belle: What did you lean on?
- 57:28Tad Eggleston: Oh, yeah, that's right, she did a Jonah Hex issue that was amazing.
- 57:36Lee Woods: Oh, just to make sure I'm clear, because I've been…
- 57:39Lee Woods: misunderstanding this. Do we want to do the…
- 57:44Lee Woods: If we do mine management, are we doing the Omni, or are we doing the trade?
- 57:49Lee Woods: I know we don't fixers now.
- 57:51Tad Eggleston: Be splitting it up into the 3 omnibuses.
- 57:54Lee Woods: Okay.
- 57:55Tad Eggleston: Rather than trying to track down the trades.
- 57:58Lee Woods: Got it.
- 57:58Tad Eggleston: Because that's how it's most commonly printed now.
- 58:01Tad Eggleston: But I don't think that's gonna be in this break. I don't think there's enough time to do it justice.
- 58:06Lee Woods: Oh, that's right, okay.
- 58:07Tad Eggleston: I think it's gonna be spectators next.
- 58:09Matt & Belle: Can we do…
- 58:10Tad Eggleston: looking to see if there was anything from Fiona Staples that was really worth jumping on.
- 58:15Tad Eggleston: Other than Saga.
- 58:18Tad Eggleston: And I think, like… The best option for that is probably the…
- 58:24Tad Eggleston: 3 issues of Archie that she did.
- 58:29Josh Eiserike: I'm all for that, too, because as with spectators, I own it, so that's easy.
- 58:34Lee Woods: Right, same.
- 58:36Lee Woods: Matt Bell, what were y'all trying to say, sorry?
- 58:40Matt & Belle: Well, we're just still worried about, Red Handed by Matt Ken.
- 58:44Lee Woods: Oh, red-handed.
- 58:45Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 58:46Tad Eggleston: So… so… I… I am in favor of Red Handed by Matt Kent. I don't know if it's available digitally, so it's gonna be a matter of whether we can get into everybody's hands.
- 58:57Tad Eggleston: So, what I propose is spectator… and I love how we're doing this on air, because that's just how I roll. But I propose spectators for next month.
- 59:07Matt & Belle: I don't know.
- 59:07Tad Eggleston: The Mark Waid, Fiona Staples.
- 59:11Tad Eggleston: Archie. Archie for the month after.
- 59:15Tad Eggleston: And if everybody can manage to put hands on Red Handed, or I can manage to find reader copies, then we'll do Red Handed.
- 59:25Tad Eggleston: For what is hopefully the last month before.
- 59:28Tad Eggleston: Saga comes back.
- 59:30Matt & Belle: Yippee!
- 59:32Tad Eggleston: Because I love me some red-handed, too.
- 59:35Tad Eggleston: It's like mind management in one volume in a small town, rather than the world.
- 59:42Lee Woods: This is Rich White.
- 59:43Tad Eggleston: Belle wants to read Mind Management.
- 59:44Matt & Belle: It was what got me back into reading. Diary of a Woofy Kid did it first, in, like, 5th grade, and Matt Kent, with Red Handed did it in high school.
- 59:52Tad Eggleston: Matt's amazing.
- 59:53Matt & Belle: He got me back into reading, and then I read Saga, and it was over for the world.
- 59:59Tad Eggleston: And now you're going after your PhD.
- 1:00:02Matt & Belle: Yeah, right?
- 1:00:03Tad Eggleston: You could have been a fry cook at McDonald's, but Matt Kent…
- 1:00:08Matt & Belle: Had other plans.
- 1:00:09Tad Eggleston: Fiona Staples had other plans for you.
- 1:00:20Josh Eiserike: Matt, can I make a quick request?
- 1:00:22Tad Eggleston: Sure.
- 1:00:23Josh Eiserike: I'm looking at the calendar. Can we flip Archie and Spectators, actually? Just because I'll be traveling, and my copy of Spectators is signed, and I do not want to bring it with me. That is a very selfish request, but if we can do that, I'd be happy.
- 1:00:35Tad Eggleston: So, 3 issues, Archie, for next…
- 1:00:38Tad Eggleston: Well, I think it's even in a folder that I shared with you guys.
- 1:00:43Tad Eggleston: I put spectators in a digital copy.
- 1:00:50Tad Eggleston: in the same folder that you put that Vaughn script in.
- 1:00:52Josh Eiserike: Oh, also my, my Archie is signed too, so never mind.
- 1:00:57Josh Eiserike: I was like, wait a sec.
- 1:00:59Matt & Belle: That's hilarious.
- 1:01:01Tad Eggleston: Well, then, then since I know that I shared the… the… the PDF… from the tower.
- 1:01:10Tad Eggleston: with everybody. We'll do spectators first, because I know that everybody has that digitally, if… if no other way. And is your Archie signed by Wade or Staples?
- 1:01:20Josh Eiserike: Wade.
- 1:01:21Matt & Belle: Way, clearly.
- 1:01:22Tad Eggleston: I was fined by Staples, I was gonna, like…
- 1:01:26Tad Eggleston: Learn how to be a cat burglar.
- 1:01:29Josh Eiserike: No.
- 1:01:31Josh Eiserike: Definitely not.
- 1:01:32Matt & Belle: Hilarious.
- 1:01:33Tad Eggleston: So, okay.
- 1:01:36Matt & Belle: That would be reasonable.
- 1:01:38Tad Eggleston: Spectators?
- 1:01:39Tad Eggleston: And then Archie… And then probably red-handed.
- 1:01:44Tad Eggleston: Though, again, it's a matter of… well, it looks like it might be…
- 1:01:49Tad Eggleston: Available directly from MACKINT for $25, which is good, because the Amazon price for it is, like, $75.
- 1:02:05Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:02:07Tad Eggleston: We won't.
- 1:02:08Tad Eggleston: I think that's… I think that's a reasonable.
- 1:02:10Matt & Belle: Are we still on air? Yes, we are.
- 1:02:12Tad Eggleston: Of course we are.
- 1:02:13Lee Woods: Hell yeah, we are.
- 1:02:15Tad Eggleston: Of course we are.
- 1:02:16Matt & Belle: Dead air.
- 1:02:18Tad Eggleston: Matt's gonna take us out now, it's time.
- 1:02:21Matt & Belle: And we'll continue after the next page.
