- 2:28Speaker 4: Good morning, Dave, thanks for having.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Me, Thank you for being I gotta ask you how
- 2:31Speaker 2: you feeling, man, because I know we were texting back
- 2:34Speaker 2: and forth yesterday. You've been a little under the weather.
- 2:37Speaker 2: That's why you're not gracing us with your presence in
- 2:40Speaker 2: studio today. How are you feeling.
- 2:42Speaker 4: I'm getting better. I'm getting better. The fever and body
- 2:46Speaker 4: aches are slowing down a little bit. So yeah, I'm
- 2:48Speaker 4: feeling a little bit better.
- 2:49Speaker 2: And COVID is still a thing. People forget about it
- 2:51Speaker 2: that they thought it was. It's gone the way of
- 2:53Speaker 2: some of these other diseases, which sadly enough, some of
- 2:56Speaker 2: them are coming back now. But that's another story for
- 2:57Speaker 2: another time. But you text me and you said you
- 3:01Speaker 2: had COVID. I was like, man, who gets COVID anymore?
- 3:03Speaker 2: But apparently a lot of people do, and you got it.
- 3:06Speaker 4: I did. I test a positive Sunday night.
- 3:09Speaker 2: All right. But you're doing better now, right, Yeah, doing
- 3:12Speaker 2: much better?
- 3:12Speaker 4: All right?
- 3:12Speaker 1: All right?
- 3:13Speaker 2: So what's explain to us? And I know we've got
- 3:15Speaker 2: a few things we want to talk about, Jason, want
- 3:17Speaker 2: to try to you know, not to not tax your
- 3:19Speaker 2: voice too much, but let's talk about what the last
- 3:22Speaker 2: couple of weeks have been like for Union Mission, you know,
- 3:25Speaker 2: with the with the government to shut down. And of
- 3:27Speaker 2: course you guys already do a fantastic job of providing
- 3:30Speaker 2: various needs for people here in the Kanal Valley and
- 3:33Speaker 2: all over, but what's the last couple of weeks been
- 3:36Speaker 2: like for you guys?
- 3:38Speaker 4: Very chaotic? Actually. Through our Family Service Department, we serve
- 3:42Speaker 4: about twelve families a day. We provide about two weeks
- 3:46Speaker 4: of food for those twelve families. About a week into
- 3:50Speaker 4: the shutdown, we ramped up to fifteen different families, and
- 3:54Speaker 4: then less than a week we ramped up to eighteen
- 3:58Speaker 4: eighteen families a day. We were week so that equates
- 4:02Speaker 4: to a little over one thousand people a month we're
- 4:06Speaker 4: trying to feed. It's been pretty pretty chaotic. We're about
- 4:10Speaker 4: booked about two weeks out. But in emergency situations, we
- 4:14Speaker 4: are getting people in immediately.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Talk about the services that you provide. When you say
- 4:20Speaker 2: you take care of these families, what all are we
- 4:21Speaker 2: talking about here.
- 4:22Speaker 4: Jason, Yeah, so our Family Service Department TAL we take
- 4:26Speaker 4: care of house fires. We help people in situations that
- 4:28Speaker 4: are there, they're out of job and they need food.
- 4:32Speaker 4: We will provide food for them immediately. If they've had
- 4:34Speaker 4: a house fire, we put them up into hotels, provided
- 4:39Speaker 4: food cards so they can eat at restaurants. We try
- 4:43Speaker 4: to provide really really good, solid, nourishing food for them.
- 4:49Speaker 4: And so a combinment of things that we try to
- 4:52Speaker 4: do to help people that are in need.
- 4:54Speaker 2: And that's kind of where what the last couple of
- 4:57Speaker 2: weeks have been like. And of course the government shut
- 4:59Speaker 2: down all appearances, looks like it's going to come to
- 5:02Speaker 2: an end with a house vote. I think it's a
- 5:03Speaker 2: four o'clock or so this afternoon, So, but it's still
- 5:07Speaker 2: going to take a little while to recover from all that, right.
- 5:11Speaker 4: Yeah, most definitely we're prepared for that, all right.
- 5:13Speaker 2: Well, you guys, as I said, always do a fantastic job.
- 5:15Speaker 2: That's why we're glad to partner with you on certain things.
- 5:18Speaker 2: All right. So now, as if this time of year
- 5:20Speaker 2: with a shutdown and everything, you know, that didn't make
- 5:22Speaker 2: it chaotic enough, this is your I mean, all twelve
- 5:24Speaker 2: months are your busy time, but this is your really
- 5:26Speaker 2: busy time as we head into Thanksgiving and Christmas.
- 5:29Speaker 4: Yeah, we are one of our biggest events of the
- 5:32Speaker 4: year's Stick Bash that's Thanksgiving morning. We were in heavy
- 5:36Speaker 4: planning mode for that. We've got about six hundred runners
- 5:40Speaker 4: that are signed up already for that, and pretty excited
- 5:43Speaker 4: for our Drumstack Dash. And we got Christmas. We're providing
- 5:49Speaker 4: Christmas Christmas for Fallster kids this year all over the
- 5:51Speaker 4: state of West Virginia. Really pumped for that. So we
- 5:54Speaker 4: got a lot going on. It's a terrible time to
- 5:56Speaker 4: get sick, but we have a lot going on and
- 5:58Speaker 4: pretty excited about that.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Your co workers would say that Quinchrell do anything to
- 6:02Speaker 2: try to get out of work.
- 6:03Speaker 4: You know, I've heard that three times this week.
- 6:06Speaker 2: I know you, man, and I'll tell you when we
- 6:08Speaker 2: do these events on our parking lot here that we
- 6:10Speaker 2: do uh with the in partnership with you guys. You're
- 6:12Speaker 2: you're the first one here in the last one out
- 6:14Speaker 2: and no matter how cold it is, how hot it is,
- 6:16Speaker 2: you're always right out there with us. So that's just
- 6:18Speaker 2: a little jab between buddies right there, because it's nothing
- 6:22Speaker 2: really could be further from the truth. I want to
- 6:23Speaker 2: go back to the to the drumstick dash. How many
- 6:26Speaker 2: years have you guys been doing that? Fourteen fourteen years?
- 6:30Speaker 2: And where? And we'll have you on before then to
- 6:32Speaker 2: talk about it. But where where does the route run
- 6:34Speaker 2: for this for the drumstick dash?
- 6:37Speaker 4: Head ad riverfront there and then it turns around at
- 6:40Speaker 4: the Capitol and then comes back. It's through.
- 6:43Speaker 2: It's a five k okay. Now, when people want to
- 6:46Speaker 2: sign up, what do they do? Just go to your
- 6:47Speaker 2: website or what.
- 6:49Speaker 4: Yeahs is to go to we feedpeople dot com. You
- 6:51Speaker 4: can sign up right through there, or you can go
- 6:53Speaker 4: to the ap timing website and sign up through through
- 6:56Speaker 4: that as well.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Talking to Jason quinch Al of Union Mischief a Dave
- 7:01Speaker 2: Island showing five Adie Live is broad to you apart,

- 7:12Speaker 2: the podcast menu. And of course, you know you guys
- 7:16Speaker 2: during the holiday season, I mean, you really really ramp
- 7:18Speaker 2: it up. We talked about the drumstick dash, but there's
- 7:20Speaker 2: so many things that you do every Christmas.
- 7:23Speaker 1: Talk.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Let's talk about a few of them.
- 7:26Speaker 4: In the past few years, well actually for probably the
- 7:29Speaker 4: last twenty years, have done Christmas for kids in the
- 7:34Speaker 4: local area here, and we are we're not stopping that,
- 7:39Speaker 4: We're just going with a different direction. We were We've
- 7:42Speaker 4: partnered with an organization that has provided toys for kids
- 7:46Speaker 4: across the state, all counties through their foster programs, and
- 7:51Speaker 4: so we've gotten involved with that this year and cleared
- 7:55Speaker 4: out our whole second floor of our warehouse to start
- 7:58Speaker 4: storing toys and getting ready to get those out. So
- 8:01Speaker 4: min it's it's just a cool situation to be able
- 8:04Speaker 4: to help coster kids that may or may not have
- 8:07Speaker 4: Christmas this year and we're able to help provide that.
- 8:11Speaker 2: I want to talk about volunteer opportunities because you guys
- 8:14Speaker 2: have a full staff out there, but you're always needing
- 8:16Speaker 2: people just to come out to help on various things
- 8:19Speaker 2: like you know, just all the activities that you do.
- 8:21Speaker 2: Let's talk to civic organizations, let's talk to businesses. Let's
- 8:26Speaker 2: just talk about your volunteer EF efforts to get more volunteers.
- 8:29Speaker 4: I should say, if you're interested in volunteer and please
- 8:32Speaker 4: get a hold of Joyce Davis. You can do that

- 8:51Speaker 4: come in that will they've we've had volunteers coming in
- 8:55Speaker 4: and helping with our family Service coordinators to help with
- 8:58Speaker 4: all the calls that we've had come in over the
- 9:00Speaker 4: last few weeks. There are multiple ways you can volunteer.
- 9:04Speaker 4: We have organizations that come here almost monthly to help
- 9:09Speaker 4: around the grounds and helpless situations at our thrift store
- 9:12Speaker 4: to help all kinds of different areas. So we have
- 9:14Speaker 4: we have multiple areas to serve from from men's shelter
- 9:18Speaker 4: to recovery toffer way, many different areas you can get involved.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Indeed, Jason, I'm gonna let you go arrest that voice
- 9:26Speaker 2: right now.
- 9:26Speaker 1: All right.
- 9:27Speaker 2: I expect that when we have you on here in
- 9:28Speaker 2: a couple of weeks to talk about the drumstick Dash,
- 9:30Speaker 2: that you're gonna you're gonna be all rested up and
- 9:32Speaker 2: ready to go.

- 13:31Speaker 5: How are you, Dave? I'm doing great. Thank you for
- 13:33Speaker 5: having me all.
- 13:34Speaker 2: Right, thank you for being here. Man. You've even you
- 13:36Speaker 2: got the Earl Lloyd's shirt and everything. Oh man, you're
- 13:38Speaker 2: all all about this thing. But and you've been on
- 13:40Speaker 2: the show a few times in the past.
- 13:42Speaker 4: Coach.
- 13:42Speaker 2: But for those that don't know, tell us the story
- 13:46Speaker 2: of Earl Lloyd.
- 13:48Speaker 5: Well October thirty first, nineteen fifty uh. He was the
- 13:51Speaker 5: first African American to step floor step foot on an
- 13:55Speaker 5: NBA basketball floor during a game. You obviously graduated from
- 14:00Speaker 5: West Virginia State. He was at West Virginia State from
- 14:02Speaker 5: nineteen forty six to nineteen fifty, So a lot of
- 14:06Speaker 5: people know that part of the story, but not as
- 14:09Speaker 5: many know the rest of the story. I mean, he
- 14:12Speaker 5: team folded about nine games into it. He was playing
- 14:15Speaker 5: for the Washington Capitals and they folded. So then he
- 14:18Speaker 5: got drafted into the Army. He always told me I
- 14:21Speaker 5: was the only guy got drafted twice in the same year,
- 14:24Speaker 5: and so.
- 14:25Speaker 2: One good, one bad exactly, well, not bad, but won
- 14:28Speaker 2: a little bit more difficult than him.
- 14:29Speaker 5: How's that correct. So he spent a year and a half,
- 14:32Speaker 5: two years in the Army. Then when he comes out,
- 14:34Speaker 5: the Syracuse Nationals pick him up. Syracuse Nationals are now
- 14:38Speaker 5: the Philadelphia seventy six ers as they moved the franchise.
- 14:41Speaker 5: But in nineteen fifty five, he and a guy by
- 14:43Speaker 5: the name of Jim Tucker become the first two black
- 14:46Speaker 5: players to win NBA Championship. And then he went on
- 14:49Speaker 5: to finish his career with the Detroit Pistons, becomes the
- 14:53Speaker 5: first black assistant coach in the NBA, and then they
- 14:57Speaker 5: fired the head coach and he becomes the first black
- 15:00Speaker 5: old time bench head coach in the NBA that was black. Now,
- 15:03Speaker 5: the year before that, Bill Russell was a player slash coach,
- 15:07Speaker 5: So he was coaching, but he was still playing, right,
- 15:09Speaker 5: wouldn't everybody like to do that? Yeah, be a player
- 15:11Speaker 5: and coach your team. I'm taking every shot.
- 15:14Speaker 2: It's exactly right.
- 15:15Speaker 5: But that's that's you know, Earl's earls. You know, he's
- 15:18Speaker 5: there first, and so many things and in in in
- 15:20Speaker 5: the NBA. He also went on to be one of
- 15:22Speaker 5: the first black executives with Chriser Corporation. I mean, so
- 15:26Speaker 5: this guy was a phenomenon.
- 15:27Speaker 2: He was talking about a trailblazer. I mean, most people
- 15:30Speaker 2: are lucky if they get one or two remarkable things
- 15:32Speaker 2: in their life. That's lay from from you know, the
- 15:36Speaker 2: NBA and what he did at State and then the
- 15:38Speaker 2: different teams is with and coach and general manager, and
- 15:41Speaker 2: then to totally pivot and become a business executive.
- 15:44Speaker 5: Absolutely, and then he worked under Dave BEng when Dave
- 15:47Speaker 5: bing was the mayor of Detroit as well, so he
- 15:50Speaker 5: was kind of the liaison between the police and the
- 15:53Speaker 5: black community in Detroit and with the education. So I mean,
- 15:57Speaker 5: this guy, if you really look at him, I mean,
- 15:59Speaker 5: and the thing that was even better than all that,
- 16:03Speaker 5: you know, I can say all that and how great
- 16:05Speaker 5: all that is is. I got a chance to meet
- 16:07Speaker 5: him in two thousand and four when we retired his
- 16:09Speaker 5: jersey and then became very close friends. Spent a lot
- 16:12Speaker 5: of time together in a lot of different events over
- 16:14Speaker 5: ten years, and he was just a special human being,
- 16:18Speaker 5: more so than just being a pioneer. I mean, he
- 16:20Speaker 5: was just he was He was a diamond, and I
- 16:24Speaker 5: was thankful enough that I got to spend a lot
- 16:25Speaker 5: of time with him.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Talk about that time you spent with him. That had
- 16:28Speaker 2: many cases I have nothing to do with basketball and
- 16:31Speaker 2: the friendship that you guys forged.
- 16:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 16:33Speaker 5: Absolutely. You know, he had a stroke a few years
- 16:36Speaker 5: before he passed away, and so that kind of scared
- 16:39Speaker 5: me a little bit. And I called Charleed and I said, hey,
- 16:42Speaker 5: you as soon as he gets back on his feet,
- 16:43Speaker 5: I need to come down there and spend some time
- 16:45Speaker 5: with him.
- 16:45Speaker 2: And where was this was it?
- 16:47Speaker 5: That was in Crossfield, Tennessee. And that's where he ended
- 16:49Speaker 5: up retiring from Alexander Virginia, went to West Virginia State,
- 16:53Speaker 5: finished his career in Detroit, and ended up in Crossfield, Tennessee.
- 16:58Speaker 5: He said, a few people from Detroit, a couple of
- 17:01Speaker 5: couples there. They went down there in vacation to end
- 17:04Speaker 5: up buying a timeshare and then that turned into a lot,
- 17:07Speaker 5: and then he built a house there. So that's where
- 17:10Speaker 5: he ended up, you know, retiring at and where he
- 17:13Speaker 5: passed away. But you know, my dad and I drove
- 17:15Speaker 5: down and spent the night with him and was in
- 17:18Speaker 5: his den actually watching. This was in June May June,
- 17:22Speaker 5: and I remember vividly Oklahoma City was playing San Antonio
- 17:25Speaker 5: Spurs in the NBA playoffs and I'm sitting here with
- 17:28Speaker 5: Earl Lloyd, just you know, talking life and talking basketball.
- 17:32Speaker 5: And you know what's crazy is when we went back
- 17:34Speaker 5: a few years later to start documentary that we've got
- 17:38Speaker 5: done and hopefully we'll be released soon. I didn't recognize
- 17:42Speaker 5: it when I was down there the first time, But
- 17:44Speaker 5: when I went back the second time, nowhere in his
- 17:47Speaker 5: home was one picture, one ball, one trophy, one book,
- 17:52Speaker 5: one anything displayed that ever told you played basketball, let
- 17:57Speaker 5: alone that he's in the Natesmith Basketball Hall of Fame
- 18:00Speaker 5: and that he's the first black player to ever play
- 18:01Speaker 5: an NBA. Nothing was displayed in his home. That's how
- 18:05Speaker 5: humble this guy was. And we're going through his home
- 18:07Speaker 5: and getting some b roll footage and Kevin opens up
- 18:10Speaker 5: the door to a closet in the den that I
- 18:13Speaker 5: was sitting in a few years back watching basketball. In
- 18:16Speaker 5: the floor of his closet was his Naatesmith Basketball Hall
- 18:20Speaker 5: of Fame trophy.
- 18:21Speaker 4: Wow.
- 18:21Speaker 5: Now, I promise you most people, Charles Barkley, for one,
- 18:26Speaker 5: I would say, has got that trophy at his centerpiece
- 18:29Speaker 5: and a light shining down on it. Take the kid's
- 18:31Speaker 5: pictures down if you have to, Oh, absolutely, But Earl
- 18:34Speaker 5: was just that way. I mean, he was just a
- 18:36Speaker 5: special human being.
- 18:37Speaker 2: I cot the coach Brian Port for Western State about
- 18:40Speaker 2: Earl Lloyd talk about that documentary because I know I've had,
- 18:43Speaker 2: like I said, you've been on a couple of times.
- 18:44Speaker 2: We talked about the issues of trying to get this
- 18:47Speaker 2: documentary out. So give us an update on that.
- 18:50Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, the money guy behind it. You know,
- 18:52Speaker 5: documentaries don't make a whole lot of money, but the
- 18:54Speaker 5: money guy behind it has kind of got it held
- 18:57Speaker 5: up right Now, Coodymans was one of the producers, and
- 19:02Speaker 5: so Coody Simmons' names probably you know, is going to
- 19:04Speaker 5: be recognizable by a few people. He did the Benji
- 19:08Speaker 5: thirty on thirty on ESPN called Benji, and he also
- 19:11Speaker 5: did the four part docu series on Kanye West that
- 19:14Speaker 5: was released a couple of years ago. So, I mean,
- 19:16Speaker 5: Cooty's a good producer, and and the film's good. I mean,
- 19:20Speaker 5: Carmelo's in it, and Kawhi Leonard is in it, and
- 19:23Speaker 5: Oscar Robertson's in it, and so and the guy behind it.
- 19:28Speaker 5: I mean, I think he had good wishes. He wanted
- 19:30Speaker 5: to get it out to the inner cities and have everybody,
- 19:33Speaker 5: all the inner city youth be able to see it
- 19:35Speaker 5: for free. And it was really done right before COVID,
- 19:38Speaker 5: and then COVID hit and then that backed everything up,
- 19:41Speaker 5: and now we've just not been able to get it
- 19:43Speaker 5: released all.
- 19:44Speaker 2: Right, But we are hoping that because I mean, this
- 19:46Speaker 2: is a story, Coach that I think needs to be told.
- 19:49Speaker 2: And I know you guys are doing it for your
- 19:53Speaker 2: players to come to State, and we'll talk about that
- 19:55Speaker 2: a little bit later on, but it needs to go everywhere. Anybody,
- 19:59Speaker 2: I mean, everybody did a kid that I don't, And
- 20:02Speaker 2: I really don't know what Earl's growing up was. Like
- 20:05Speaker 2: you probably know more about that than I do. But
- 20:07Speaker 2: I'm just going to say, even if he came from
- 20:09Speaker 2: the wealthiest of backgrounds, being an African American at that
- 20:13Speaker 2: time in America and coming of age during the you know,
- 20:17Speaker 2: the beginnings of the of the civil rights movement, when
- 20:19Speaker 2: there's still a whole lot of prejudice, to go on
- 20:22Speaker 2: to play in the NBA, to coach in the NBA,
- 20:27Speaker 2: to do what he did with Chrysler and later with
- 20:29Speaker 2: the City of Detroit. I mean, people need to hear
- 20:32Speaker 2: the story. And when you talk, you were talking about
- 20:33Speaker 2: the people that's on the documentary, the fact that Carmelo,
- 20:36Speaker 2: Anthony and the others that they know the story is promising.
- 20:41Speaker 5: It is, It definitely is. And you know, Earle always
- 20:45Speaker 5: deflected to Jackie. I mean he always anytime I ask
- 20:48Speaker 5: you about it, because Jackie did it before me. Jackie Robinson.
- 20:51Speaker 5: Jackie Robinson we're talking about. And of course everybody knows
- 20:54Speaker 5: Jackie by one name. He's got a movie forty two
- 20:57Speaker 5: out and all those things. But I used to always
- 20:59Speaker 5: tell Earl, I mean you went through the same hardships.
- 21:02Speaker 5: I mean you didn't stay in the same hotels as
- 21:04Speaker 5: the white players or eating the same restaurants as the
- 21:07Speaker 5: white players. And they even when he was with Syracuse,
- 21:11Speaker 5: they had an exhibition game in South Carolina, and South
- 21:13Speaker 5: Carolina said, yeah, we'll host the game, but you cannot
- 21:16Speaker 5: bring Earl Lloyd. Not he can't play, you can't bring
- 21:20Speaker 5: Earl Lloyd. And so you know, he went through hardships
- 21:23Speaker 5: like that, So he had every reason to be managed
- 21:25Speaker 5: the world right with what he went through. Not Earl
- 21:29Speaker 5: the exact opposite. I mean, he was just such a
- 21:31Speaker 5: nice guy. And just like I say, every time I
- 21:33Speaker 5: talked to him, he never talked about himself. He always, hey,
- 21:36Speaker 5: how's your family? Want to know about my dad and
- 21:40Speaker 5: my kids? And so he, like I say, he was
- 21:43Speaker 5: a special guy.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Talked to coach Brian Poor West Virginia State University of
- 21:46Speaker 2: The Dave Island Show and five Vidyline brought to you
- 21:48Speaker 2: part by Pinnacle Consultants. Their services involved developing comprehensive management plans,
- 21:53Speaker 2: outline strategies for controlling and minimizing his best exposure, perfect
- 21:57Speaker 2: for commercial property owners and managers check out Pinnacle Corp.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Dot new because what you don't know can't hurt you.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Which when you have players that come on to campus
- 22:05Speaker 2: and some from West Virginia stufferm out of the state,
- 22:08Speaker 2: what does what do you do as a coach and
- 22:11Speaker 2: what does the institution do do to make sure that
- 22:14Speaker 2: people know the story of Earl Lloyd, whether they're playing
- 22:17Speaker 2: basketball or not the average student comes on campus. What
- 22:20Speaker 2: goes into that, well, a couple of things.
- 22:21Speaker 5: First off, I mean every phone call I have with recruit,
- 22:24Speaker 5: that's one of the first topics I bring up. And
- 22:27Speaker 5: you know, because I want to educate the young and
- 22:31Speaker 5: so it's crazy because I ask all of them, you know,
- 22:34Speaker 5: who's the first African American ever played in the NBA.
- 22:36Speaker 5: Not one has ever got it right, not one ever,
- 22:40Speaker 5: And so you know, that tells you that this story
- 22:43Speaker 5: needs to be told. And then also back in twenty fourteen,
- 22:47Speaker 5: when we open up our new arena, the Walker Commocation Center,
- 22:51Speaker 5: I was fortunate enough to have met a guy by
- 22:53Speaker 5: name of Brian Hanlan. And Brian Hanlan was the official
- 22:56Speaker 5: sculptor of the NBA. And so Brian and I met
- 23:00Speaker 5: in New Orleans at the Final four in twenty twelve,
- 23:04Speaker 5: only because my wife wanted to go to New Orleans,
- 23:07Speaker 5: or else I wouldn't have even went to the Final
- 23:08Speaker 5: four that year, but because she wanted to go, then
- 23:11Speaker 5: I end up in New Orleans. I meet Brian Handlin,
- 23:14Speaker 5: I see one of the statue that he did of Shack,
- 23:17Speaker 5: and I get him involved with this. He charges us
- 23:20Speaker 5: nothing for his artistic work because he knew Earl Lloyd
- 23:25Speaker 5: and got to know him when Earl was inducted into
- 23:27Speaker 5: Hall of Fame. And so the statue is in our lobby.
- 23:30Speaker 5: Every recruit comes in, that's one of the first things
- 23:33Speaker 5: that we go see. And even in our missions department
- 23:37Speaker 5: on the campus tours, they always bring them by and
- 23:39Speaker 5: show them the Earloyd statue.
- 23:42Speaker 2: And I think that's so important that young people, no
- 23:45Speaker 2: matter what the story is, whether it's Earl Lloyd or
- 23:47Speaker 2: whatever coach, I mean that young people need to know
- 23:50Speaker 2: that the foundation for what they are allowed to do
- 23:54Speaker 2: today was that was forged by somebody generations.
- 23:59Speaker 5: Absolutely absolutely, And you know, for a long time, the
- 24:04Speaker 5: NBA brought him in while he could still travel and
- 24:07Speaker 5: all that brought him in to meet with the rookies
- 24:09Speaker 5: and so he kind of shared their story with them,
- 24:12Speaker 5: but everything says.
- 24:13Speaker 2: Something about him right there. Coach is that the NBA,
- 24:17Speaker 2: you know, because you know, in the world of sports,
- 24:20Speaker 2: you got people that you want the young guys around,
- 24:22Speaker 2: and you got people that you don't necessarily want to
- 24:24Speaker 2: random and this happens frequently in the NFL and other
- 24:28Speaker 2: sports as well. Let's say, okay, we got rookies coming in.
- 24:30Speaker 2: We want you to try to model yourself after these people,
- 24:34Speaker 2: not necessarily that guy. So we're gonna put some positive
- 24:36Speaker 2: people out in front of him.
- 24:38Speaker 5: Absolutely. And Jim Tucker was the other African American that
- 24:41Speaker 5: was on Syracuse Nationals team when they won the NBA
- 24:44Speaker 5: championship in fifty five. And Jim was younger than Earl,
- 24:47Speaker 5: probably four or five years younger than the Earl. Jim
- 24:50Speaker 5: came up when we unveiled the statue as well. He
- 24:52Speaker 5: has since passed away, but Jim tells the story of
- 24:55Speaker 5: how Earl was really kind of his mentor and kind
- 24:59Speaker 5: of you know, led him. Earl always made him dress up,
- 25:03Speaker 5: he said, all the time when they were on the road,
- 25:05Speaker 5: Earl was in a suit and tie because Earl says,
- 25:07Speaker 5: I'm not going to give them anything negative to say
- 25:10Speaker 5: about me, They're going to say enough about me anyway.
- 25:13Speaker 5: I'm not going to give them anything negative to say
- 25:15Speaker 5: about me. So I'm gonna be dressed first class. I'm
- 25:17Speaker 5: gonna act first class. And Jim was more of an
- 25:20Speaker 5: outgoing kind of out in the clubs and all that
- 25:23Speaker 5: kind of things than he used to always say. Man,
- 25:25Speaker 5: Earl would go to listen to some jazz in certain
- 25:28Speaker 5: towns that he knew was safe, but he would always say,
- 25:31Speaker 5: you know, Earl would say, all right, Jim, let's go,
- 25:33Speaker 5: time to get out of here. And so he'd take
- 25:35Speaker 5: Jim home. And so that was just an Earl. I mean,
- 25:38Speaker 5: he was he was a leader and he knew right,
- 25:41Speaker 5: you know, right from wrong, and we're lucky enough to
- 25:45Speaker 5: have him be the guy that broke the color barrier
- 25:47Speaker 5: in my estimation.
- 25:48Speaker 2: So talk about what's going on this weekend.
- 25:50Speaker 5: Earl Lloyd Classic year ten I believe this year. And
- 25:56Speaker 5: so we started this, like I say, ten years ago.
- 25:59Speaker 5: Our president at the time, doctor Henpeel, wanted us to
- 26:02Speaker 5: pay homage to our heritage in the Sea Double A
- 26:05Speaker 5: when Earl played here. That's where the team played Westernion
- 26:09Speaker 5: State played in the CW Double A. So we always
- 26:11Speaker 5: bring in one other conference team and then two teams
- 26:15Speaker 5: from the SEAT double A, and so we have this
- 26:17Speaker 5: year we have Livingstone and Clafland University coming in from
- 26:21Speaker 5: the CI, and then we have Glenville State is going
- 26:23Speaker 5: to be there from the Mountain East. So on Friday,
- 26:27Speaker 5: the games will be at five thirty, seven thirty, and
- 26:29Speaker 5: then Saturday at two and four. We play the late
- 26:32Speaker 5: games on both those days, so we'll play at seven
- 26:34Speaker 5: thirty on Friday and four o'clock on Saturday.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Is there an effort when these teams come in, especially
- 26:42Speaker 2: Mcglenville's one thing, but maybe some other teams that aren't
- 26:44Speaker 2: familiar with the story. Is there a little education that
- 26:46Speaker 2: goes on with them? I mean, because you know this
- 26:48Speaker 2: time of year, as you well know, coach, I mean,
- 26:50Speaker 2: you're playing some kind of a tournament or shootout all
- 26:52Speaker 2: the time named after this person or that person. Maybe
- 26:55Speaker 2: they know who the person is, maybe they don't. Is
- 26:58Speaker 2: there an effort to maybe for these outside teams to say, here,
- 27:02Speaker 2: here's you got that name on your shirt now as
- 27:05Speaker 2: a T shirt as a reminder, here's who this person was.
- 27:08Speaker 5: Yeah. Absolutely, and especially Livingstone's coach, Coach Stintson, he's an
- 27:13Speaker 5: older coach and he comes back every year and he says,
- 27:16Speaker 5: I come back for Earl Lloyd. And so I know
- 27:19Speaker 5: he shares it with his team and Breon down at
- 27:23Speaker 5: Claughland this year. I'm sure he will too. But they
- 27:25Speaker 5: all come in through the lobby. And this year is
- 27:28Speaker 5: the seventy five year anniversary of Earl playing in the game,
- 27:31Speaker 5: being twenty twenty five, and he played in nineteen fifty.
- 27:33Speaker 5: So the NBA has got behind it. This shirt I'm
- 27:35Speaker 5: wearing here, the NBA has paid for and given to
- 27:38Speaker 5: all the participants.
- 27:39Speaker 2: Let's got other names on it too.
- 27:41Speaker 5: It does because the pioneers. You know, a lot of
- 27:43Speaker 5: people will say Chuck Cooper, you know, the first black
- 27:45Speaker 5: player to play in the NBA, Chuck Cooper. Well that's
- 27:47Speaker 5: not true. Chuck Cooper was the first black player to
- 27:49Speaker 5: get drafted. He was drafted in the second round by
- 27:52Speaker 5: the Boston Celtics. Now the minute thing that hardly anybody knows.
- 27:57Speaker 5: Chuck Cooper was at West Virginia State as a freshman
- 28:00Speaker 5: and he was only there for first semester. He got
- 28:03Speaker 5: drafted into the Army. After his two years. He ends
- 28:06Speaker 5: up going to Ducane, which is where he was from Pittsburgh.
- 28:10Speaker 5: And then Sweetwater Clifton is the other one that's on
- 28:13Speaker 5: the shirt. And Sweetwater Clifton was the Xavier University in
- 28:16Speaker 5: Louisiana and hbcuar there, but he was playing for the
- 28:19Speaker 5: Harlem Globetrotters. And so Sweetwater was the first black player
- 28:23Speaker 5: to sign an NBA contract. So the NBA has really
- 28:26Speaker 5: been promoting all year.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Tell the story. You really got to tell all three.
- 28:30Speaker 2: I mean you do, yeah, you do.
- 28:32Speaker 5: Just the way the schedule fell because Earl was drafted,
- 28:34Speaker 5: I believe in the ninth round. I think this is
- 28:36Speaker 5: like the hundredth pick and so, but the way the
- 28:40Speaker 5: schedule fell October thirty first, nineteen fifty, who was the
- 28:43Speaker 5: first to play.
- 28:44Speaker 2: Can you imagine with the modern athletes having to have
- 28:49Speaker 2: that hangover their head that they may be drafted. I mean,
- 28:52Speaker 2: you know, the nineteen twenty year old athletes hot shot
- 28:55Speaker 2: And I'm not trying to, you know, ship cast any
- 28:59Speaker 2: negative light on on modern athletes. Many would be the
- 29:01Speaker 2: first to step up and say let's go. But it's
- 29:03Speaker 2: a different world. I mean, I don't know if the
- 29:05Speaker 2: young guys and girls, for that well, you know, guys,
- 29:07Speaker 2: I guess they don't understand that, you know, you meant
- 29:10Speaker 2: to put down the basketball or the football or the
- 29:12Speaker 2: baseball and go to a foreign land.
- 29:14Speaker 5: Yes, absolutely back then and when Earl the Korean War
- 29:17Speaker 5: was going on and so that was what And Earl
- 29:20Speaker 5: actually didn't go overseas, but and he played some army ball, Dad,
- 29:24Speaker 5: you know, armball and what to have you spend a
- 29:26Speaker 5: year and a half. But you know, and Chuck Cooper,
- 29:28Speaker 5: I mean he got his college education interrupted. I mean
- 29:31Speaker 5: he's he's a freshman first semester and they're like, uh,
- 29:34Speaker 5: you got to go to the army. So it's definitely
- 29:36Speaker 5: a different time, Coach.
- 29:38Speaker 2: Forard, it's always a pleasure to have you on the
- 29:39Speaker 2: show to tell the Earl Lloyds story. And our hope
- 29:42Speaker 2: is that every any time we have you on that
- 29:44Speaker 2: somebody hears it that didn't know the story, and hope
- 29:47Speaker 2: that you can go out and take in some great
- 29:48Speaker 2: basketball this weekend and keep us updated on the documentary.
- 29:51Speaker 5: All right, absolutely, we'll do. I appreciate you having me
- 29:53Speaker 5: on day.

- 33:48Speaker 2: How you doing man, I'm doing very well. Thanks for
- 33:50Speaker 2: having on. Thank thank you. I just committed the Knawk
- 33:53Speaker 2: County Commission to something as in the change over there
- 33:56Speaker 2: with Coach Poor that you guys are going to at
- 33:59Speaker 2: some point going to bring this up about having an
- 34:01Speaker 2: Earl Lloyd Day in County. We definitely should do that.
- 34:04Speaker 2: I mean, that's a big deal. It is a very
- 34:06Speaker 2: very big deal. And I've had Coach Poor on a
- 34:08Speaker 2: couple of times been to talk about the story of
- 34:10Speaker 2: Earl Lloyd because so many people, I think, and I
- 34:12Speaker 2: don't want to make it sound like Epickon'm young people.
- 34:14Speaker 2: I'm talking about people our age don't know about Earl Lloyd.
- 34:18Speaker 2: I mean, I mean, think about this. Okay again, you
- 34:22Speaker 2: know what he did at West Virginia State, military veteran,
- 34:26Speaker 2: first black player to suit up in a game, first
- 34:31Speaker 2: black assistant coach, first see he was. After the coaching,
- 34:38Speaker 2: he went on to a successful business career, high ranking
- 34:41Speaker 2: official with Chrysler Motor Corporation in Detroit, Executive assistant to
- 34:45Speaker 2: the Mayor of Detroit. And that's that's pretty impressible, and
- 34:50Speaker 2: all from a kid that played at West Virginia State.
- 34:53Speaker 14: It's funny because I didn't know anything about Earl Lloyd
- 34:56Speaker 14: until I was actually on campus at Westernion State and
- 34:59Speaker 14: saw the at you now whatever. I started reading about it,
- 35:02Speaker 14: and that's that was probably seven or eight years ago. Yeah,
- 35:06Speaker 14: well or six years ago, but it was. It was
- 35:08Speaker 14: definitely not before that.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Well, they're trying to get that documentary finished. There's been
- 35:12Speaker 2: some financial issues that got delayed by COVID. But I
- 35:14Speaker 2: think it's a story Ben that I mean, you talk
- 35:17Speaker 2: I'm a sports documentary. Not if it says thirty thirty
- 35:20Speaker 2: for thirty I'll watch it no matter what. I've got
- 35:22Speaker 2: a bank of I'm recorded as a matter of fact.
- 35:24Speaker 2: But I love this stuff. But you talk about a great,
- 35:26Speaker 2: a great story that everybody needed to see. Even if
- 35:28Speaker 2: you're not a this is not a sports story. I mean,
- 35:31Speaker 2: this is a story of triumph and overcoming and so
- 35:34Speaker 2: on and so forth. So even if you're not a
- 35:35Speaker 2: basketball person, this definitely, definitely would be something that everybody
- 35:38Speaker 2: needs to check out.
- 35:39Speaker 14: Yeah, basketball was just kind of a way for him
- 35:41Speaker 14: to get out there. By the time, you know, and
- 35:45Speaker 14: then he's been successful in everything that he did.
- 35:47Speaker 2: He would have been a success, I think no matter
- 35:48Speaker 2: if he never picked up a basketball, that's right, that's
- 35:50Speaker 2: kind of the way I look at him, all right,
- 35:52Speaker 2: So it's the subject that will not go away.
- 35:54Speaker 4: Ben.
- 35:55Speaker 2: It's it's Halloween, particularly it's November talking about Halle because
- 36:00Speaker 2: us you guys did something last week related to this,
- 36:02Speaker 2: particularly Trick or Treat two weeks ago. Trick or Treat
- 36:05Speaker 2: for Canawan County, originally schedule for Thursday night, got moved
- 36:07Speaker 2: to the actual Halloween night on Friday night, and you
- 36:10Speaker 2: joked on the show that day. I think we had
- 36:12Speaker 2: you on maybe the day after the announcement, so maybe Wednesday.
- 36:15Speaker 2: I think you were on the show that day. You
- 36:17Speaker 2: joked in you said, and I think your words were,
- 36:20Speaker 2: we just need to move Trick or Treating to October
- 36:23Speaker 2: thirty first, no matter what. And I guess the other
- 36:25Speaker 2: commissioners were on board.
- 36:27Speaker 14: They were, and so so you know, it's a thing.
- 36:30Speaker 14: It's not a criticism of what the commission has done
- 36:32Speaker 14: in the past, because I think there are very valid
- 36:35Speaker 14: reasons to try to keep it off of a Friday
- 36:38Speaker 14: or Saturday. And honestly, a lot of people were upset
- 36:40Speaker 14: that it's eventually going to be on a Sunday. But
- 36:44Speaker 14: you want to make sure that you're doing all you
- 36:45Speaker 14: can to protect the kids. But at the end of
- 36:48Speaker 14: the day, I think that it needs to be the
- 36:51Speaker 14: parent's responsibility. If it's raining, you don't need the county
- 36:54Speaker 14: commission to tell you, oh, keep your kid inside, that's
- 36:57Speaker 14: something the parents can do. If it's snowing, if it's cold,
- 37:01Speaker 14: you don't need the county commission to say, oh, it's
- 37:03Speaker 14: way too cold for your kid to be outside.
- 37:05Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 37:07Speaker 14: It's the parents and you want if you want to
- 37:08Speaker 14: take your kid out trick or treating and it's snowing
- 37:10Speaker 14: or it's raining, take them. And it's not necessarily going
- 37:14Speaker 14: to be on a Thursday night or a Wednesday night
- 37:17Speaker 14: like we had done in the past. It's going to
- 37:18Speaker 14: be whenever the thirty first is.
- 37:20Speaker 2: And we we talked about that before, because you're not
- 37:23Speaker 2: gonna make everybody happy. I mean, people don't want it
- 37:25Speaker 2: on Wednesday night because in many areas it's church night.
- 37:27Speaker 2: They don't want it on Thursday night because it's middle
- 37:29Speaker 2: school basketball or middle school sports football, football, I mean Friday,
- 37:33Speaker 2: they don't want it because it's high school Saturday. The
- 37:35Speaker 2: thing was is that, well, we don't want them out
- 37:37Speaker 2: when all the people are going to the bars, and
- 37:38Speaker 2: we don't want it on Sunday. But you're saying, going forward,
- 37:41Speaker 2: barring anything that trigger, treat in Kanan County will be
- 37:45Speaker 2: held on the thirty first.
- 37:46Speaker 14: Thirty first, And you know, I was thinking about it
- 37:48Speaker 14: and I don't remember. I guess it's been so long
- 37:50Speaker 14: when I when I was growing up, I don't remember
- 37:52Speaker 14: them bouncing the day around. It was always on the
- 37:55Speaker 14: thirty first, and I don't remember, you know, I don't
- 37:58Speaker 14: remember trick or treating on a Sunday or mattering that
- 38:01Speaker 14: it was.
- 38:02Speaker 2: On a Sunday.
- 38:03Speaker 14: A lot of people go to church in the mornings,
- 38:04Speaker 14: you know, and they'll have maybe a family gathering at
- 38:06Speaker 14: noon or something, but it's going to be six to
- 38:09Speaker 14: eight pm on the thirty first. It doesn't matter what
- 38:10Speaker 14: day it's going to fall on. And it's going to
- 38:13Speaker 14: take a major, major event for that to be moved
- 38:18Speaker 14: because one of the things, and there's some validity. And
- 38:22Speaker 14: by the way, I did some research to Google, was
- 38:25Speaker 14: my friend. I tried to figure out exactly what other
- 38:26Speaker 14: communities were doing, and primarily they just hold on the
- 38:29Speaker 14: thirty first all across the country. So I think a
- 38:34Speaker 14: lot of people were anticipating it being on Thursday. Some
- 38:37Speaker 14: people had to take off work. Now The truth is,
- 38:40Speaker 14: the weather came in. It wasn't nearly as bad as
- 38:43Speaker 14: we were predicting. But you know, trying to predict the
- 38:47Speaker 14: weather and move an event like that when parents are
- 38:49Speaker 14: taking the day off or the evening off from work
- 38:51Speaker 14: to take their kids trick or treating, to move it
- 38:53Speaker 14: to Friday, I gotta be honest with you. On Thursday,
- 38:56Speaker 14: it was three pm. I was sitting in my office
- 38:57Speaker 14: and I looked out the window and it was And
- 39:01Speaker 14: so I called a couple of my meteorology friends and
- 39:04Speaker 14: I was like, look, is this gonna happen or not,
- 39:06Speaker 14: because if it doesn't happen, I'm gonna have to like
- 39:08Speaker 14: list my house and move out of town. And they said,
- 39:11Speaker 14: oh no, just wait, it's happening. It's happening. And you know,
- 39:14Speaker 14: we got some weather. It wasn't as bad as we
- 39:15Speaker 14: thought it was going to be, particularly the wind, which
- 39:17Speaker 14: is what I was worried about. Forty forty mine hour winds,
- 39:20Speaker 14: kids out trick or treating. You know, tree branch is falling,
- 39:23Speaker 14: drivers having trouble with visibility. That's what I was worried about.
- 39:27Speaker 14: So then we moved to Friday. Friday was a was
- 39:29Speaker 14: a perfect weather day for trick or treat. But honestly,
- 39:34Speaker 14: I probably could have had it on Thursday anyway. All right,
- 39:36Speaker 14: so going forward, no matter what it is. The thirty first, okay,
- 39:39Speaker 14: is a third and again and.
- 39:40Speaker 2: We had a text here somebody said about it being
- 39:42Speaker 2: on a Sunday, even if it's on a Sunday.
- 39:44Speaker 14: Even on a Sunday. And I will tell you now,
- 39:46Speaker 14: so go ahead and prepare for it now. October thirty
- 39:50Speaker 14: one of twenty twenty seven is a Sunday, So go
- 39:55Speaker 14: ahead and prepare for it. If your kids you don't
- 39:57Speaker 14: want them trick or treating on Sunday, take them to
- 39:59Speaker 14: a trunk or treat earlier in the week. But you've
- 40:01Speaker 14: got two years notice to deal with it, right.
- 40:07Speaker 2: And I said, the thing that's the most ridiculous thing
- 40:10Speaker 2: about this, to be Ben, and I promise we're going
- 40:12Speaker 2: to move on, is that the fake You could trick
- 40:14Speaker 2: or treat anytime you want. You don't need the I
- 40:16Speaker 2: mean you want to, you know, because there's extra law
- 40:19Speaker 2: enforcement officers and so on and so forth that you
- 40:23Speaker 2: want to put into play emergency Everson, But you could
- 40:25Speaker 2: trigger treat anytime you want. There's no tricker treat police.
- 40:28Speaker 2: You know what I and I'm gonna be honest. I
- 40:30Speaker 2: was Friday night during Trick or Treat. I was a
- 40:33Speaker 2: nervous wreck.
- 40:34Speaker 14: I kept thinking that it's high school football. You've got
- 40:38Speaker 14: people there, you know. We move trick or treat and
- 40:40Speaker 14: the municipalities followed, and I pray nobody gets hurt. I pray.
- 40:46Speaker 14: I was an I was a mess, like Friday was
- 40:48Speaker 14: so like this is going to be on us if
- 40:49Speaker 14: some kids gets hurt. And that evening, I said, you
- 40:54Speaker 14: know what, forget it. We're I'm going to move the
- 40:56Speaker 14: commission to try to do this thing on October thirty
- 40:59Speaker 14: one and just make sense that you don't need the
- 41:00Speaker 14: government jumping in too when your kids can go get candy.
- 41:04Speaker 14: You know, come on, we got more important things to do.
- 41:06Speaker 14: Quite frankly, quick text.
- 41:08Speaker 2: Unless everyone is willing to move Christmas to another day,
- 41:11Speaker 2: don't mess with Halloween trick or treating. That's right, we're not.
- 41:14Speaker 14: We're not touching Christmas and we're touching trigger treat.
- 41:18Speaker 4: All right.
- 41:18Speaker 2: Did anyone ever think about no football games of the
- 41:20Speaker 2: last Friday in October had that day just for trick
- 41:23Speaker 2: or treat? Just curious? So in other words. You go
- 41:25Speaker 2: to your high school teams and say you're going to
- 41:27Speaker 2: play on we can't to play on Thursday. Yeah, now
- 41:30Speaker 2: look what you've done, salang, go listen, listen.
- 41:33Speaker 14: I'm not messing around with high school football and I'm
- 41:35Speaker 14: not messing around with trick or treat. So those are
- 41:38Speaker 14: the those are off limits for the county commission.
- 41:40Speaker 2: All right, quick text. Church folks aren't more important than
- 41:44Speaker 2: us Heathens who celebrate All Saints Day. We live through
- 41:46Speaker 2: the seventies. Just fine, all right, I am off this
- 41:49Speaker 2: now on the.
- 41:51Speaker 14: Topic because honestly, everybody has so many opinions. And I
- 41:55Speaker 14: joked on the show last time. You know, the people
- 41:57Speaker 14: that are raising cane online are are probably the ones
- 42:00Speaker 14: that turn off their lights and hide inside and like
- 42:03Speaker 14: they're not home anyway. But they just want something to vent.
- 42:05Speaker 14: And that's okay.
- 42:07Speaker 2: We're here for it.
- 42:08Speaker 4: You know.
- 42:08Speaker 14: I can be a punching bag. In fact, a lot
- 42:10Speaker 14: of it. It's just hilarious to me, Like people will
- 42:13Speaker 14: screenshot it and send it to me. I just crack up.
- 42:15Speaker 2: But here's what I hear. Thought I predicted. Okay, and
- 42:18Speaker 2: you and I have never talked about your political future.
- 42:20Speaker 2: You're happy to being a Kna County commissioner. But let's
- 42:22Speaker 2: just let's just say you're running for reelection for Canon
- 42:24Speaker 2: County Commission, okay, or whatever the office is. I can
- 42:28Speaker 2: hear it now and then deep in that deep voice,
- 42:30Speaker 2: Ben Solango destroyed Trick or Treat. Ben Selango hates your kids.
- 42:37Speaker 2: He chose Satan on Sunday.
- 42:39Speaker 5: Yeah, I can see it.
- 42:40Speaker 2: Oh, it's going to be all right, all right, So
- 42:42Speaker 2: let's get serious now. You rolled out a new app
- 42:44Speaker 2: last week. Can you want to talk about that?
- 42:45Speaker 14: You know what the the And it's funny because it
- 42:48Speaker 14: was also on the last show that somebody texted in
- 42:50Speaker 14: or called in and said, what's up with the KANAA app?
- 42:53Speaker 2: It doesn't work?
- 42:54Speaker 14: And the truth is I hadn't had the app on
- 42:56Speaker 14: my phone in a long time because it didn't work
- 42:59Speaker 14: that well, the prior app, And so the Commission had
- 43:02Speaker 14: been working on a new app. Our Emergency Management has
- 43:05Speaker 14: been working with Metronoma one and working on a new app,
- 43:08Speaker 14: and we just launched it at the Commission meeting on
- 43:11Speaker 14: last Thursday. So if you want to get alerts, we're
- 43:15Speaker 14: talking weather alerts, traffic alerts, you can go Emergency Management.
- 43:22Speaker 14: We give safety tips on their emergency contact information. All
- 43:28Speaker 14: of it is on this one app. If you go
- 43:29Speaker 14: to the app store, whatever phone you have, you have
- 43:32Speaker 14: an iPhone or Android, you go and you type in
- 43:35Speaker 14: kanaw Alert and it should be the first thing that
- 43:38Speaker 14: comes up. You download it, and you will get and
- 43:39Speaker 14: you can set your notification preferences. You don't have this
- 43:42Speaker 14: thing dinging on your phone in two seconds, but you
- 43:45Speaker 14: can set your notification presence. But you'll get it all.
- 43:48Speaker 14: If the interstate shut down, you're going to see it.
- 43:51Speaker 14: If you're going to see the right now, the eight
- 43:53Speaker 14: hundred block at Kelly's Creek Road and System Villa is
- 43:55Speaker 14: shut down, do it or an accident?
- 43:57Speaker 4: Now?
- 43:57Speaker 14: The one flaw that we have on the app, which
- 43:59Speaker 14: we're working on fixing, is a lot of these alerts
- 44:02Speaker 14: need to be timed. Like I don't know exactly when
- 44:05Speaker 14: that alert came out. So now we've got an accident
- 44:09Speaker 14: in the westbound exit ramp at Nitro, So you know,
- 44:13Speaker 14: I don't know exactly when that happened. Was it immediately
- 44:16Speaker 14: or was it twenty minutes ago? OK, So we're gonna
- 44:19Speaker 14: put a time stamp on you got it. That's going
- 44:21Speaker 14: to be updated but everything else is great if you
- 44:23Speaker 14: need uh, we did a there was a presentation you
- 44:27Speaker 14: can't actually text nine to one one from this app,
- 44:31Speaker 14: And there have been situations where people been kidnapped, they've
- 44:35Speaker 14: been in the trunk of a car.
- 44:37Speaker 5: You can't call nine one one.
- 44:38Speaker 2: You got an emergency situation, an abuse, an abuse of situation.
- 44:41Speaker 2: You don't necessarily want somebody to hear you on the phone,
- 44:43Speaker 2: so you can actually text.
- 44:44Speaker 14: Now, you can text it and nine to one one
- 44:46Speaker 14: actually receives text and a lot of people don't know that,
- 44:48Speaker 14: but you can actually text it. The other thing too,
- 44:50Speaker 14: is when you text nine to one one, they can
- 44:53Speaker 14: pinpoint within a ten foot radius of where you're located. Right,
- 44:58Speaker 14: So if somebody texts the to.
- 45:00Speaker 2: Help, yes, like you know whatever, I mean, they will
- 45:03Speaker 2: know where you are. That's they will know where you are.
- 45:05Speaker 2: That's that's it's that's that's very good to have. I
- 45:09Speaker 2: hope you never have to use it, but it will
- 45:11Speaker 2: be used.
- 45:11Speaker 14: The other thing too that this app does, which I
- 45:13Speaker 14: did not realize until they demonstrated on Thursday, is you
- 45:16Speaker 14: can set up like a buddy system. So if you're
- 45:20Speaker 14: if your friend's going to go on a hike. You
- 45:22Speaker 14: can actually share your location on the app, so you
- 45:26Speaker 14: both have to have the app.
- 45:27Speaker 5: So, Dave, if you.
- 45:28Speaker 14: Went to you went out to conostate for us, you said, Hey,
- 45:30Speaker 14: I'm going to go for a hike. You share your
- 45:33Speaker 14: location with me on the app and I can track

- 48:41Speaker 2: to find you? I would presume it would. I think
- 48:43Speaker 2: it has to be. Tech says any way to have

- 48:58Speaker 14: I don't know how those were. Are there apps now

- 49:05Speaker 2: TJA the animals you're our technology expert, not pet guy. Sorry, Stephanie.
- 49:12Speaker 5: Can take them that.
- 49:13Speaker 2: Yeah, so I don't know if that's possible. Okay, all right.
- 49:16Speaker 2: We had a text here I wanted to get your
- 49:18Speaker 2: taken on. It says, why did Knawa County demolish the
- 49:20Speaker 2: old Macy's building before funding and planning it for the
- 49:23Speaker 2: sports center or final.
- 49:24Speaker 14: Well, because we needed to secure the land, we needed
- 49:28Speaker 14: to come up with the plan. We had the finances
- 49:31Speaker 14: in place. We're still waiting on a request for an
- 49:36Speaker 14: ear mark that we submitted. In fact, there was an
- 49:39Speaker 14: ear mark that was approved back in twenty twenty four
- 49:43Speaker 14: and then the government, the federal government couldn't pass a budget,
- 49:46Speaker 14: so we lost our ear mark. We had the financing
- 49:48Speaker 14: in place, you know, but it was it was going
- 49:50Speaker 14: to be a seventy million dollar ear mark. Congress was
- 49:53Speaker 14: unable to pass a budget that year and so we
- 49:55Speaker 14: lost it. And so that that's the hold up. So
- 49:57Speaker 14: we've submitted again. And I'm not I say this every
- 49:59Speaker 14: time bring this up. I'm not blaming anybody. I'm not
- 50:02Speaker 14: blaming anybody. I'm just saying that's that was the funding plan,
- 50:06Speaker 14: you know, it was. We had scaled the project back
- 50:08Speaker 14: because of all the ARPA funds that had come in
- 50:10Speaker 14: had drive driven up the cost of construction significantly, from
- 50:15Speaker 14: like three point fifty a square foot almost seven hundred
- 50:17Speaker 14: dollars a square foot, So we had to scale back
- 50:19Speaker 14: the project. That's when we phased out the pool and
- 50:22Speaker 14: thought about maybe we can do the pool at some
- 50:23Speaker 14: other time. And so then we had the financing in place.
- 50:27Speaker 14: You know, the city was ready to bond a portion.
- 50:29Speaker 14: We were ready to bond a portion we each put in.
- 50:32Speaker 14: I think it was around five million dollars, and we
- 50:35Speaker 14: had everything ready to go, and then Congress couldn't pass
- 50:37Speaker 14: the budget to approve that earmark that we had been awarded.
- 50:42Speaker 14: But again, getting getting the letters one thing, getting the
- 50:45Speaker 14: cash to something else.
- 50:47Speaker 2: Indeed, uh, Texas, Dave, can you ask Ben, are they
- 50:50Speaker 2: going to have family pricing this year? For light the
- 50:53Speaker 2: night for a family of five gets darn expensive and
- 50:55Speaker 2: then they nickel and downy inside. I don't know, is
- 50:57Speaker 2: that's something that you can answer. I don't know that
- 50:59Speaker 2: you were not.
- 51:00Speaker 14: Yeah, I have to take my commission hat off, says Okay,
- 51:03Speaker 14: I think there are family there are family nights, and
- 51:06Speaker 14: let me say this, if there's somebody out there that
- 51:07Speaker 14: can't afford it. All you got to do is reach out,
- 51:09Speaker 14: because we do have some complimentary tickets and we do
- 51:12Speaker 14: sponsor some families. It is it can be quite expensive,
- 51:16Speaker 14: but you know, just to go in and see the lights,
- 51:17Speaker 14: it's not that it's not that bad.
- 51:18Speaker 2: Texas for ben Selango, good morning. My question related to
- 51:21Speaker 2: smart meters? How is it legal to not be able
- 51:24Speaker 2: to opt out? They emit more EMF radiation than our
- 51:27Speaker 2: cell phones, up to nineteen thousand pulses per day. Constant
- 51:31Speaker 2: exposure has been linked to sleep disorders, heart headaches, not heartaches,
- 51:35Speaker 2: even brain timors. Can you can you why is it
- 51:37Speaker 2: not possible to opt out of those?
- 51:38Speaker 14: I do not know.
- 51:39Speaker 2: Okay, you can't buy an old meter anymore. That's all
- 51:42Speaker 2: they make, okay, smart meters. I mean seriously, you can't
- 51:44Speaker 2: go buy an old meter that you would read or
- 51:46Speaker 2: even in are F meter. They don't make them anymore. Okay,
- 51:48Speaker 2: all right, well there you go, there you go. That's
- 51:50Speaker 2: why we keep him around. Yeah, all right, right, final
- 51:53Speaker 2: forty five seconds? What else is on the radar for
- 51:55Speaker 2: Commissioner Selangoa and the commission.
- 51:56Speaker 4: You know what?
- 51:57Speaker 14: So we have we've secured the architect that's going to
- 52:00Speaker 14: do the designing. We've got to engineer the new Knaw
- 52:03Speaker 14: County Sheriff's shooting range. We're looking at that. We've got
- 52:08Speaker 14: that in place. We're hoping that the design will be finished.
- 52:12Speaker 14: The ZMM is gonna work on the design through the
- 52:14Speaker 14: winter and then by the time spring rolls around we'll
- 52:17Speaker 14: be able to start construction. I hope to have that
- 52:19Speaker 14: done probably summer to fall of next year. That's a
- 52:23Speaker 14: big deal, so anxious for that to happen.
- 52:26Speaker 2: Kenagh County Commission, President of ben Selanga, appreciate you being here.
- 52:29Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 52:29Speaker 2: Meadows and Wilson coming up with the talk line. Shelley
- 52:32Speaker 2: Moore Capito off the top is at sil right, that's right.
- 52:35Speaker 2: And EPA Administrator Lee Zelden. Okay, they're together and they're
- 52:39Speaker 2: going to be on this phone call together. See you
- 52:41Speaker 2: later today. Till then, have fun. I love somebody,
