- 0:00Speaker 1: What do you even say at a moment like this?
- 0:02Speaker 1: I have been covering Brewers baseball long enough to remember
- 0:05Speaker 1: the heartbreaks, the almost years, the seasons where we thought
- 0:09Speaker 1: we had it and then watched it slip through our fingers.
- 0:12Speaker 1: And tonight at a dome in St. Petersburg, Florida, with 40,000
- 0:15Speaker 1: people watching and millions more across this small, stubborn, baseball-obsessed city,
- 0:20Speaker 1: the Milwaukee Brewers won the World Series. First time in
- 0:23Speaker 1: 57 seasons of this franchise. First time ever. And I
- 0:28Speaker 1: need everyone listening to understand that what we just watched
- 0:31Speaker 1: was not just a baseball game. It was a 57-year-old
- 0:35Speaker 1: wound finally closing. The final out was a grounder to second.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Richie Palacios hit it, and when Bryce Terang fielded it
- 0:42Speaker 1: and threw the first, Trevor McGill just threw his arms
- 0:45Speaker 1: up and was mobbed by teammates near the mound. Players crying,
- 0:49Speaker 1: coaches crying, grown men who have seen everything in this
- 0:51Speaker 1: game completely undone by the moment. And honestly, good. Let
- 0:55Speaker 1: them cry. We have earned it, every single one of us. Now,
- 1:00Speaker 1: let me walk you through how we got here because
- 1:02Speaker 1: this game was not pretty and it did not need
- 1:04Speaker 1: to be. This was a game about grit, about finding ways,
- 1:08Speaker 1: about doing exactly what was needed when it was needed
- 1:11Speaker 1: and nothing more. Milwaukee did not hit a single home
- 1:14Speaker 1: run tonight. All four runs came through singles, doubles, and
- 1:17Speaker 1: a sacrifice fly. That feels like a Brewers thing to
- 1:20Speaker 1: me right down to the bones. In the second inning,
- 1:23Speaker 1: Bryce Terang doubled against Drew Rasmussen, who had been so
- 1:26Speaker 1: good in this series. Sal Freelick got hit by a
- 1:30Speaker 1: pitch to load things up, and then Cooper Pratt, 22
- 1:33Speaker 1: years old, a rookie playing in the biggest moment of
- 1:36Speaker 1: his young life, lined a single to center field. Terang scored,
- 1:40Speaker 1: and we were up 1-0. Here's the thing about that hit, though.
- 1:43Speaker 1: It was Pratt's fifth straight hit of the series, and
- 1:46Speaker 1: he was about to make history in the fifth inning
- 1:48Speaker 1: against Kevin Kelly. Pratt singled again. That made it six
- 1:51Speaker 1: hits and six consecutive at-bats. The first rookie in Major
- 1:54Speaker 1: League history to ever do that. I keep saying it
- 1:57Speaker 1: because it keeps being unbelievable. The kid had no fear tonight.
- 2:51Speaker 1: None whatsoever. He scored on David Hamilton's single to make
- 2:54Speaker 1: it 2-0. Then came the sixth, and Garrett Cleavinger just cracked.
- 2:59Speaker 1: Two hits in the third of an inning, two runs
- 3:01Speaker 1: off him alone. Christian Yellich scored on William Contreras' double,
- 3:05Speaker 1: and then Pratt hit a sacrifice fly to right field
- 3:07Speaker 1: to bring Contreras home and make it 4-0. Seven RBI
- 3:11Speaker 1: in the series for a 22-year-old in his first October,
- 3:14Speaker 1: his first ever. I do not think we fully understand
- 3:17Speaker 1: what we have on our hands. From 4-0, it was
- 3:20Speaker 1: about surviving. And that is where Trevor Meggle came in.
- 3:23Speaker 1: He was not sharp tonight, I will be honest with you.
- 3:26Speaker 1: But he was Trevor Meggle, and that was enough. He
- 3:28Speaker 1: got through the seventh clean, the eighth clean. The ninth
- 3:31Speaker 1: started fine until Liam Hicks hit a weird bounce off
- 3:34Speaker 1: the corner of first base that ricocheted into foul territory
- 3:38Speaker 1: for a double. A fluke, really. The kind of thing
- 3:40Speaker 1: you see once in a career sometimes. Then Chandler Simpson
- 3:44Speaker 1: doubled in one run, and suddenly it is 4-1 with
- 3:47Speaker 1: two outs. The crowd is making noise. They smell something.
- 3:51Speaker 1: And Meggle just retired Palacios on a grounder to second,
- 3:55Speaker 1: and the World Series is over. I want to talk
- 3:57Speaker 1: about Miz Jarowski for a second because this kid is
- 4:00Speaker 1: something else. Five and two-thirds scoreless innings in Game 5
- 4:04Speaker 1: of the World Series. 21 of his 22 pitches in
- 4:07Speaker 1: the second inning were 100 miles per hour or more.
- 4:11Speaker 1: His fastest was 103, and he threw it twice to
- 4:14Speaker 1: Junior Caminero in the first. He left the game with
- 4:17Speaker 1: a leg cramp, which at that point felt like both
- 4:20Speaker 1: a relief and a small knot in your stomach. Did
- 4:22Speaker 1: we just survive because of that? I think we did.
- 4:26Speaker 1: He only had two strikeouts, which for a guy who
- 4:29Speaker 1: usually rakes them in was unusual, but he did not
- 4:31Speaker 1: need them. He was just too good to hit. Two
- 4:34Speaker 1: hits allowed in five and two-thirds. He finished the World
- 4:37Speaker 1: Series 2-0 with a sub-1 ERA. He is going to
- 4:40Speaker 1: be the Cy Young, and he should be. And tonight
- 4:43Speaker 1: cemented that case in the most dramatic fashion imaginable. And
- 4:47Speaker 1: William Contreras, World Series MVP, batted. 381 in the series
- 4:52Speaker 1: with four RBI and four court stealing behind the plate.
- 4:56Speaker 1: He played catcher like a man possessed this entire postseason.
- 4:59Speaker 1: The defense, the leadership, the big hits. He was the
- 5:03Speaker 1: heartbeat of this club and the award is just a
- 5:05Speaker 1: formal acknowledgement of what every Brewers fan already knew. Now
- 5:09Speaker 1: let me put this all in perspective because this is
- 5:11Speaker 1: so much bigger than one night. The Brewers had the
- 5:14Speaker 1: smallest media market in Major League Baseball going into this season.
- 5:18Speaker 1: 19th biggest payroll. They swept the Dodgers in the league
- 5:21Speaker 1: championship series. The big money, big market, loaded Dodgers. And
- 5:26Speaker 1: then they came to Florida and finished it in five.
- 5:29Speaker 1: The 103 wins in the regular season meant something. The
- 5:33Speaker 1: 11-2 in the postseason meant something. Seven comeback wins in
- 5:37Speaker 1: the playoffs meant something. None of that was wasted. And
- 5:40Speaker 1: the fact that Christian Yellich, who has been the face
- 5:43Speaker 1: of this franchise for over a decade, honored Bob Ewerker
- 5:47Speaker 1: after the game, that is when I lost it. I
- 5:49Speaker 1: have been a Brewers fan since before I could fully
- 5:52Speaker 1: understand what I was watching. Ewerker called games when I
- 5:55Speaker 1: was learning what a double play was. And Yellich standing
- 5:59Speaker 1: there saying his name after winning the biggest prize in baseball.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I will not pretend I was composed listening to that
- 6:05Speaker 1: moment unfold. So where does this franchise go from here?
- 6:09Speaker 1: I have no idea, and for the first time in
- 6:11Speaker 1: my life as a Brewers fan, that thought does not
- 6:14Speaker 1: terrify me. It excites me. We just won it all
- 6:17Speaker 1: with a 22-year-old shortstop making history, a pitcher throwing 103
- 6:22Speaker 1: miles per hour in Game 5 of the World Series,
- 6:24Speaker 1: and a catcher who played like he was trying to
- 6:26Speaker 1: win a war for his family. The window is not
- 6:29Speaker 1: just open. We kicked the door down. This is not
- 6:32Speaker 1: a rebuild year anymore. This is a championship roster, and
- 6:35Speaker 1: everyone in this league knows it now. The Dodgers know it.
- 6:38Speaker 1: The Rays know it. Everyone who dismissed this city, this payroll,
- 6:42Speaker 1: this market, they all know it now too. Milwaukee, Wisconsin,
- 6:46Speaker 1: the smallest media market in baseball, just won the World Series.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Say it loud. Say it with pride, because for the
- 6:52Speaker 1: first time in 57 years, you can. Congratulations to this team.
- 6:57Speaker 1: Congratulations to this city. Congratulations to every single one of
- 7:02Speaker 1: us who never stopped believing that this day would come.
- 7:05Speaker 1: I am Mike Michelson and I will see you in
- 7:07Speaker 1: the parade. It took 57 years, but it was worth
- 7:10Speaker 1: every single one of them. Good night, Milwaukee. You deserve this.
