- 1:08[SPEAKER_02]: I'm Rikos today, who saw Patel and joining me is Coach and Eric.
- 1:14[SPEAKER_02]: Gentlemen, the Dolphins finally have a dub in the column.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_02]: They're one and three going on the road to face the Carolina Panthers.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_02]: Eric, we missed you in the post game show.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_02]: What were your initial thoughts on that game?
- 1:34[SPEAKER_01]: So my initial thoughts were firstly, speedy recovery to Tyre Kill.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously you hate to see anything like that happen and especially for a guy who I think very quietly in the last couple of games was starting to round back into form a little bit for the offense.
- 1:56[SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, I think offensively, there was a lot of really interesting stuff that kind of happened.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_01]: Number one, I think you saw a renewed commitment to the run game.
- 2:06[SPEAKER_01]: I like the lot of what they did on the rollouts with Tua.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_01]: I think we saw a lot more of that this past week.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_01]: defensively, I think it's a little bit of another story, you know, I still kind of walk away from this game feeling like at least a little bit like the jets kind of gave it away with some of the fumbles.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_01]: And just some of the penalties that they committed, but the dolphins to their credit, you know, were able to take advantage of those.
- 2:38[SPEAKER_01]: My biggest regret is that in that third quarter really felt like the dolphins had a chance to kind of put them away and they just couldn't do it.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_01]: But I think.
- 2:50[SPEAKER_01]: the addition of Dan Waller to the offense opens up some really interesting possibilities.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that the Tyrekill injury while unfortunate could have some unintended consequences that might actually, I think there are ways you can talk yourself into certain things happening that might not be the worst case scenario for the Dolphins offense post- Tyrekill.
- 3:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_00]: I agree.
- 3:23[SPEAKER_00]: You talked about the commitment to the run game and felt like they definitely did that there was a good piece put out there by Tyler Gassana earlier about that the Darren Wall are touched down on the crossing route.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_00]: There was the boot action.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: And on that drive, they ran the ball three, four times.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_00]: That was the same drive that Tyree got injured on.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_00]: But it wasn't necessarily that they were running the ball great on those drives.
- 3:46[SPEAKER_00]: It was just there were
- 3:47[SPEAKER_00]: running it consistently and they run two outside zones to the left before that touchdown pass and then they roll to out and he hits Darren Waller so you know we talk about being able to stretch the field both vertically and horizontally that's where that really comes in and like you said about getting into a position to put the jets away.
- 4:07[SPEAKER_00]: And not being able to do it when they went up there with that touchdown it was 17 to three and then the next drive was that Justin field scrambled it brought it back to 17 10, whereas you know, if you make that stop there and you score again, then you don't want to say put it.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_00]: increase control for the rest of the game, but makes the rest of the game, you know, a lot smoother for the ball fin.
- 4:30[SPEAKER_00]: So that's something to look forward to, you know, if we get into that position again, can the ball fin actually close the door?
- 4:36[SPEAKER_01]: So go ahead and go ahead and something.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry about that.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_01]: You know, because I, I had a thought that kind of really, I find interesting and maybe this is something that we can talk about more as we talk about how the Panthers are going to defend the dolphins.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_01]: But I guess to kind of
- 4:57[SPEAKER_01]: just get into kind of what I hinted at with the whole Tyree kill and some of the unintended consequences.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of had the thought, you know, Tyree kill puts so much pressure on defenses.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_01]: And he was, you know, obviously the biggest threat of the dolphins offence had to offer.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_01]: I kind of feel like at a fundamental level,
- 5:23[SPEAKER_01]: losing Tyre Kill also kind of changes the way defenses are going to play the dolphins.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_01]: In a way that might actually in an odd way, open the vertical passing game back up because I just don't think that they're going to be as sold out to stop it as they were with
- 5:44[SPEAKER_01]: Tyree Kill, who's obviously a threat to take the top off the defense every time he's on the field.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_02]: And you know, you're, you're not wrong about that take, right?
- 5:53[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, the stats back it up.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_02]: Miami's offense has faced the most two high shelves in the league since 2024, at least from what I can remember.
- 6:05[SPEAKER_02]: through four weeks of this NFL season, Miami's offense has faced once again the most two high shelves at a 61% rate.
- 6:13[SPEAKER_02]: If we're talking about just specifically this game itself, Carolina, they play two high at around a 36% if Tyre Hill was here, I would assume they be playing that at least 40 to 50% of the time.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_02]: Now with Tyre Hill out,
- 6:34[SPEAKER_02]: I think you might see a change from too high to maybe one high to stop that running game.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_02]: But you still have the deep threat of water.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_02]: Now in the loan, you know, games that Tyric Hill was out.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_02]: Jalen model had six receptions for 120 yards and I believe touched on her two touchdowns and it was up against the jets with two a tongue by loa in 2021.
- 6:58[SPEAKER_02]: Jalen model was a 1000 yard receiver.
- 7:01[SPEAKER_02]: He was wide receiver one.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_02]: He could take those short.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_02]: He could take those intermediate routes.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_02]: He could gain yak and he was also the deep ball guy as well.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_02]: I don't see so much of
- 7:14[SPEAKER_02]: the offensive structure, changing so much.
- 7:17[SPEAKER_02]: I see more so of where the defenses are not necessarily in that too high shell anymore.
- 7:24[SPEAKER_02]: They're coming down a little bit to stop that run.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_02]: And here's where the play action piece goes into it.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_02]: Now, if you're Mike McDaniel, you are committing to running the ball
- 7:42[SPEAKER_02]: in that 11 personnel with Darren Waller, or if it's 21 or even 22 personnel, which we saw that first Darren Waller touched on B, that has the potential to have an explosive aspect, whether you're throwing intermediate to Darren Waller on a crosser, or you're throwing a deep out
- 8:09[SPEAKER_02]: That may, you know, have an effect where the explosiveness of the dolphins offense could finally be back.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I just want to add to that as well, just with Darren Waller, he doesn't move like a guy that's broken down.
- 8:28[SPEAKER_01]: I've seen, I've seen players that are broken down and have just had their athleticism sacked by injury.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_01]: And Darren Waller doesn't look like that.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_01]: Like he's still creating separation.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_01]: He's beating guys off the line of skirmish.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_01]: In a way that makes me curious as to what he can do, you know, when he does stretch the field a little bit more vertically versus you know, a little bit more what we saw in terms of the horizontal game and down in the red zone Monday night versus the jets.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_02]: Coach, I'm interested in your thoughts because we saw the dolphins be under center a lot more after Tyric Hill went down.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_02]: They're only under under center about 20% of the time remaining is usually shotgun.
- 9:16[SPEAKER_02]: Now they don't really run much running plays out of shotgun.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_02]: It's primarily passing plays.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_02]: But when they are under center in terms of their EPA, for the past and the run overall in the offense, they are the ninth best offense in terms of that.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_02]: In terms of running under center compared to just shotgun itself, do you think we see more under center runs?
- 9:42[SPEAKER_02]: Do you think we see more under center passes?
- 9:45[SPEAKER_02]: And will that help the offensive line pick up some pressures and in turn help out, you know,
- 9:53[SPEAKER_02]: and our right-guard cool strange.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think that when you're under center, it allows you to be a little less predictable, right?
- 10:03[SPEAKER_00]: And if you go back to, I mean, basically back to wing T principles, you know, under center wing T a big part of that is deception in the idea that when the quarterback is turning his back to the defense that he can hide the ball in the defense can't necessarily see you saw Peyton Manning excel at that and you know the way they talked about how much he worked on his playfix, making those look identical.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: in the past, it feels like Miami has kind of tried to lean on Tua to, you know, get up there and line to figure things out and usually not giving him enough time to do it.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_00]: But it felt like this past week was more a return back to the core of that shanty hand offense where you are undercenter, you're running those, those wide zones where the quarterback is opening up at a 45-degree
- 10:53[SPEAKER_00]: And the effect of that is that the defense has to flow with that and when they're doing that that it gives it the ability to boot out of that and it creates some some easy opportunities I think that's kind of where we saw the difference we've seen them try to Give the play fake to the outside zone out of the gun or the pistol.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: and tried to leak that tight end out of the flat.
- 11:16[SPEAKER_00]: And it just hasn't been as effective.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: But if you go back to that second dare and wall or touch down, not only was Darren Waller wide open, Julian Hill was wide open as well.
- 11:27[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that, you know,
- 11:30[SPEAKER_00]: Without Tyre Kill and without the need to to feed him and worry about those targets, I think you can go back to a little more of those basic concepts of the shanty hand system where you are under center more and you're working on more of those those mismatches.
- 11:46[SPEAKER_00]: in less predictive building in terms of what you're doing.
- 11:48[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that we should see that continue to increase and see a more even mix of under center versus shotgun.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_02]: I think with it being on-ter-center, it may it might help with the emotions now, especially up against Carolina.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_02]: Carolina is the 27th ranked defense when it comes to defending against emotions.
- 12:15[SPEAKER_02]: Carolina plays single high at a 60% rate, which is the eighth highest.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_02]: In Carolina's defense, especially playing that much single high, they are the 32nd ranked defense in terms of pressure rate.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_02]: I think that should vote well for this dolphins offense and this passing game to get going whether it be from under center, whether it be those RPOs, from shotgun, maybe even from 21 personnel.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_02]: But here's the thing, these Carolina line backers are not good in terms of past rushing or even covering the middle of the field.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_02]: Miami, when they do throw middle of the field, which this year, they're the 30th ranked team, the 30th, the team who runs basically the third most, third least, I'm sorry, I'm just having a word salad right here, but they run the second least amount of passes being thrown into the
- 13:25[SPEAKER_02]: Caroline is defense middle of the field open rate 29th of all defenses.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's Miami's bread and butter right there, spamming middle of the field, throwing those crushers to water, water, throwing those slants, those crossers or those drags over to Darren Waller on those play action boot concepts.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe even Texas rusted it to Devon H and that is going to be the staple for Miami to at least get the ball moving up against this Carolina defense.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, you know, we thought the Dolphins had issues with getting to the quarterback in terms of in terms of their past rush and and Caroline, it not only are they 30 second in pressure rate, I mean, they've got two sacks through four games.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_01]: Not only are they not even creating the pressure, even when they are, they're not getting the quarterback down on the ground.
- 14:28[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think when you look at it, it really creates a situation for this dolphins offense where, you know, two is going to be, I think in this game, you can say, he's going to be relatively clean.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_01]: Number one, and then number two, I think when you run a little bit more that traditional shanahan style where, you know, you are under center a little bit more often and you do create that unpredictability, it allows for.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the Mike McDaniel dolphins have had a lot of very strong tendencies over the last year and a half, two years, very strong tendencies.
- 15:08[SPEAKER_01]: And I think being put in a position where they're going to have to break some of those tendencies is just going to be it's going to be a good kind of shock to the offense a little bit.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_01]: you know, you don't have the threat of tie-rekill seemingly.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_01]: So you're going to double down on that.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_01]: You're not going to feel pressured to, we have to play two shell because we have tie-rekill on that's on the other side.
- 15:48[SPEAKER_01]: So they're going to feel a little bit more empowered to do that.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_01]: And I think that that's going to be where Miami can kind of,
- 15:54[SPEAKER_01]: really take advantage and lean into what to it does very well in terms of his accuracy on his timing routes and those in breakers and kind of getting back to the 2022-2023 kind of passing game for for the dolphins.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that in terms of attacking the middle of the field, that feels like that's where the replacement of the Tyrex snaps is going to come from.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_00]: We're both already playing a high percentage of snaps.
- 16:25[SPEAKER_00]: So you're not going to see a huge uptake in the number of snaps that models playing, even when the equation is at like 55% already.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_00]: So there's not a huge amount of room to move up there.
- 16:36[SPEAKER_00]: So the players that I feel like are going to replace that on the field whether it's in the the 21 person or the 11 person now, you're looking at the Nick West for continues, you're looking at the Darren wallers.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_00]: Those are more of your scene threats the guys are going to catch those balls more over the middle.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_00]: So I think this is a, I mean, never going to have good timing for Tyre killed to go down, right?
- 16:57[SPEAKER_00]: But if you are looking at how you're going to replace them and you're going to use those kind of middle of the field type receivers, then Carolina is a great opportunity to
- 17:06[SPEAKER_00]: figure out how you can replace those targets.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and look, this isn't a knock on Carolina's secondary.
- 17:14[SPEAKER_02]: Like, they have decent players.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_02]: They have Trevon Moore, a guy's one of their starting CTs.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_02]: They have as Jacy Horn as their starting corner back.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_02]: But let's move on to the run game here.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_02]: coach with this dolphins offense.
- 17:28[SPEAKER_02]: We were talking a little bit more about them running a little bit more inside zone in between the tackles.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_02]: They run inside 45% of the time a little bit more of a balance, not as much as, you know, they did pre-maked annual, but with this maked annual offense,
- 17:51[SPEAKER_02]: Usually 60 or 40 or 70, 30 outside inside this season.
- 17:58[SPEAKER_02]: It's like 55, 45, a little bit of a change and maybe because of the guards that they have.
- 18:04[SPEAKER_02]: But in terms of advanced metrics, when they run the ball,
- 18:08[SPEAKER_02]: inside in between the tackles.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_02]: They're the seventh best team.
- 18:14[SPEAKER_02]: They run outside zone at, you know, the seventh highest metric.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_02]: They are 11th in terms of outside EPA.
- 18:21[SPEAKER_02]: They're running the ball very efficiently, but they're not seeing a lot of light boxes.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think that the strength of what the dolphins' offensive line is right now.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_00]: does not mesh well with what McKinney would like to do ideal right?
- 18:39[SPEAKER_00]: McKinney wants to run that outside zone, but you know, when you look at going from Austin, Jackson, Larry, born, like for him is a solid run blocker, but not necessarily a solid outside zone run blocker in terms of the athleticism to get out there.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_00]: You've gone to coal strains now at right guard who is decently athletic
- 19:02[SPEAKER_00]: This the rest that I've seen with him running outside zone, there's still a lot to be desired there, but you know, we saw a run late in the game versus the jet, which was an inside zone getting more vertical were coal strange, you know, did a combo up to lineback or sealed it in a channel ran for 20 plus or whatever, you know, and then Jonah like Jonah.
- 19:22[SPEAKER_00]: It has not done well on the move, right?
- 19:24[SPEAKER_00]: There's balance issues there for whatever reason, whether it's hand placement, foot placement, just a, you know, weight distribution.
- 19:33[SPEAKER_00]: But when he's been able to get vertical, he's been able to create movement.
- 19:36[SPEAKER_00]: And Patrick Paul, he's been very good this year.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_00]: I want to say much better in past protection, but there's been almost no issues with past protection and this past week when I was grading,
- 19:51[SPEAKER_00]: in the run game for him and some of that again was trying to get out in space a little bit part of that could be the guard that he's playing with but you know we've seen the combination of him and Jonah be able to get into a defensive tackle and blow him back five six yards off the ball and then you know leave for a linebacker so I think that went
- 20:10[SPEAKER_00]: We're looking at what this team is able to do well now.
- 20:15[SPEAKER_00]: You've got to continue to lean on that inside stuff and take advantage of what you can do versus what you want to do in a perfect world because it's definitely the dolphins off of line right now as far from a perfect world.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, and we'll go ahead and note that down this Caroline is defensive line, even though they have Derek Brown.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_02]: that's not a good run defense there.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_02]: In terms of light box EPA and how much they run their light boxes, they run it at almost 70% but they actually do really well when they play those light boxes.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_02]: The only thing is that those safety's really do crash down and are kind of fast getting down to the limit screen, it's crimage.
- 20:56[SPEAKER_02]: The other thing is that the Carolina Panthers defense coordinator, Jero Evero, he also takes his defensive backs to blitz to crash down in the run game, kind of like what Anthony we've heard does, and what he said in his press conference.
- 21:11[SPEAKER_02]: They are 26 and EPA up against outside runs.
- 21:14[SPEAKER_02]: They are 24th in EPA in terms of inside runs given up.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_02]: So that is an inefficient run defense, kind of like the
- 21:25[SPEAKER_02]: run defense and on that we will go to break.
- 21:32[SPEAKER_02]: And we're back.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_02]: The dolphin's defense guys, it's been it's been bad.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_02]: I'll be it what we thought was going to be a weak point.
- 21:48[SPEAKER_02]: is not a weak point and what we thought was gonna be a strong point is not a strong point.
- 21:54[SPEAKER_02]: It's like freaky Friday, just happen and the two units just completely switched.
- 22:03[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, it's so frustrating for me watching this defensive line because it really does,
- 22:17[SPEAKER_01]: make me wonder about it.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_01]: And to be like, I fully expect at some point this season.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if it's this week.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if it's next week.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if it's in December.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_01]: At some point the light bulb is going to go off and we're all going to sit here asking where where where where they've been since the start of the season.
- 22:36[SPEAKER_01]: At some point.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_01]: He does not, but at some point I believe that that's it's going to happen.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to get there.
- 22:44[SPEAKER_01]: He is winning reps.
- 22:47[SPEAKER_01]: He's just not getting to the quarterback right now.
- 22:49[SPEAKER_02]: All fans have an interception yet, Eric.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: They do not.
- 22:54[SPEAKER_01]: They do not.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: They have forced quite a few fun bulls, though.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_02]: You know, against the New York Jets, Eric.
- 23:01[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know, you can't pick your opponents.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_01]: But my point, my, I guess my point being is a lot of the stuff that's going wrong with the defensive line, particularly along the inside kind of.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_01]: It almost makes me wonder what they were doing in the lead up to this season because I'm watching really simple things I'm watching Kenneth Grant get blown up because.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_01]: He's just, he's doing a really bad job of getting leverage and being the lower man.
- 23:38[SPEAKER_01]: He's getting blown up a lot.
- 23:41[SPEAKER_01]: The same thing has happened to Zack Sealer a few times.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_01]: Now don't get me wrong.
- 23:46[SPEAKER_01]: Zack Sealer kind of came alive a little bit in the second half versus the jets.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_01]: We had a few of those TFLs where he just kind of and I threw the line and got to the running back.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_01]: And I think like I said, I think we're going to get
- 24:01[SPEAKER_01]: We start to see the defensive line play well.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_01]: We're just why, why did it takes so long and I can't really answer that question.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_01]: Again, it just kind of makes me wonder, but they were doing throughout the preseason.
- 24:17[SPEAKER_01]: But the defense itself is not great.
- 24:25[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't really know how I can preface that.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_01]: I think what scares me right now, the most, is not only Chubba Hubbard, because I think that he's one of the leagues underrated running backs.
- 24:40[SPEAKER_01]: But in terms of your ability to contain the middle of the field in the short passing game, Hunter Renfero
- 24:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 24:59[SPEAKER_00]: I wish that I could pinpoint one specific thing that we could sit here and say we got to do that better and that this defense is going to be great.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_00]: But the issues have been all over the place, right, and a lot of that coming in the front seven.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_00]: You talked about what are they doing in the preseason.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think that there there definitely is a change in speed from what you do in practice versus what you do in a game, right?
- 25:25[SPEAKER_00]: And we are only
- 25:27[SPEAKER_00]: four games into the season, but you know, we really are at the point where teams are starting to round into what they're going to be for the duration of the season.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and I kind of talked about this on the post game show that in terms of the past rush, you know, this week we're finally going as the quarterback that's not as mobile, at least doesn't have the same run tendencies is the last two three quarterback free faced.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_00]: So this is really a good opportunity to see what this defense can look like when they do get that opportunity to pin their ears back.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_00]: and get after the quarterback, whereas the past couple of games, even when you got into those passing situations, you had to be aware of that possibly happening.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_00]: So you don't get burned by Justin Fields for 40 yards or verse field touchdown.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_00]: But you're not going to get that with Bryce Young.
- 26:15[SPEAKER_00]: So you can sell out a little more in terms of the past rush.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_00]: In terms of the run defense, you know, I think a lot of that is still just everybody figuring out how to play together.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_00]: in its essence just comes down to gap integrity.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody's got to fill a gap and just too often to me it feels like we've got two players in the same gap in the running backs that we're facing are doing a good job of finding those lanes that are open.
- 26:45[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, optimistically, as they continue to work together and keep putting that on film, right?
- 26:52[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully those players learn to work together, get those run lanes filled and cut down on that.
- 27:01[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, when you're talking about, you know, Chubbel Hubbard and this Panthers run offense versus the Dolphins run defense.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_02]: There's actually been something that Dolphin's defense has done well in the run game.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_02]: And they're limiting the amount of opportunities of outside zone runs.
- 27:21[SPEAKER_02]: They have a really, really good EP on that.
- 27:23[SPEAKER_02]: They're the eighth best defense against outside, runs or outside zone runs, where it's at the edge of the tackles or right into the sea gaps of both tackles on the opposite side of the field.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_02]: where they really struggle is inside where Kenneth Grant, Jordan Phillips, Zack Seeler, are supposed to be the solve right there.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_02]: They are the second worst team, second worst defense,
- 27:53[SPEAKER_02]: against inside zone runs.
- 27:55[SPEAKER_02]: And that is a big problem.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_02]: That is a big big problem.
- 28:01[SPEAKER_02]: Because guess what?
- 28:02[SPEAKER_02]: This pan there's offensive line even with the injury to Robert Hunt and Robert Hunt's replacement.
- 28:10[SPEAKER_02]: They're on their third string right guard and they're still able to run inside.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_02]: Carolina runs inside.
- 28:18[SPEAKER_02]: 62% of the time, which is the seventh most in the NFL.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_02]: They are at best an average inside running team.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_02]: They do the pin and pulls.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_02]: They have leverage on the pads.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_02]: They're able to utilize motion as well with Jitevi on Sanders and Tommy Trimbo and their 12 personal packages as well.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_02]: I believe they run 12 personnel at a 22, 23% right, which is like 19th, 19th most in the NFL and they're like below average on that
- 29:01[SPEAKER_02]: But when you're TV on Sanders and Tommy Trimble there, they're really going to eat up the linebackers in those short zone coverage as we talked about it since the last four weeks.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_02]: This Dolphins defense gives up the most amount of yards and the most explosive plays.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_02]: When the ball is thrown 1-5 yards in that short space, they are the worst team in the NFL
- 29:31[SPEAKER_02]: The Carolina Panthers with Ted McMillan, Jatavion Sanders, Tommy Trambo, Chalbo Hubbard, and Bryce Young throwing the ball.
- 29:40[SPEAKER_02]: They throw it the seventh most in the NFL.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_02]: Their EPA is probably not the best, but I'll be to him, you're gonna try to put Tyrell Dodson in coverage, Jordan Brooks in coverage.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_02]: You're gonna ask Jack Jones to not play, as deep you're gonna ask Mink of Fitzpatrick
- 29:59[SPEAKER_02]: to play one high and crowd the line of scrimmage meanwhile they could throw that deep ball up there when they're continuously throwing those short yardage throws whether it be the crossers, screenings, slants and they're doing that just with that way they can die look the deep ball and catch the dolphin secondary with their pants down.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_01]: what's happened in the beginning of the season and I think that there's been such a visceral reaction to what the dolphin secondary could potentially look like in theory and what it did look like on paper at the beginning of the season that I think so much of the year from a defensive standpoint the dolphins have kind of spent
- 30:49[SPEAKER_01]: their energy trying to compensate for what they perceived was going to be this glaring weakness and don't get me wrong and certainly not a strength.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_01]: But I think that the I think that they've been a little over aggressive this season, defensively whether it's the run blitzes, whether
- 31:18[SPEAKER_01]: I think that they may have, they've kind of been a little bit over aggressive.
- 31:22[SPEAKER_01]: I think that the, the, the, the prudent thing here is just trusting your players.
- 31:31[SPEAKER_01]: Don't, you don't want to put too much on them at this point.
- 31:34[SPEAKER_01]: I think a lot of the stuff that they've done with like the sim pressures.
- 31:37[SPEAKER_01]: They worked really well against the jets.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_01]: but a lot of that relies on, you know, that communication between players on defense and, you know, this is a system right now, especially with guys in the secondary where they're getting used to each other.
- 31:58[SPEAKER_01]: And so especially when you talk about the run game and the run fits and it's just, I think there's a lot being put on these guys' plates and I think it just needs to go back to
- 32:11[SPEAKER_01]: keep it simple right now, as these guys gel and as they grow together, if you want to add more of those, you know, you know, a little bit more, let's just wear them look for complex concepts into it, then you can do that.
- 32:31[SPEAKER_01]: But I think right now that there's just, I think Anthony Weaver's been a little bit over aggressive and trying to get to the quarterback in order to compensate for what he perceives
- 32:41[SPEAKER_02]: You know, even those complex concepts like layered stunts, coffee house stunts, or delayed blitzes, they're not working.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, coach, you talked about the leverage and pad level, especially along the interior.
- 32:53[SPEAKER_02]: None of that matters, especially if they're not getting pressure up the middle of the offensive line to the quarterback.
- 33:02[SPEAKER_02]: We talked about it in the post game show Monday night where
- 33:09[SPEAKER_02]: The only holdovers from last year's defense, playing major snaps was Jordan Brooks and Zack Seeler.
- 33:19[SPEAKER_02]: That's pretty much it.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't think this, we can't really fault too much of this onto Anthony Weaver.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_02]: I think we can point the finger and more so how the defense was built and the time it
- 33:38[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, you bring in Mink Fitzpatrick midway through training camp.
- 33:41[SPEAKER_02]: Defensive line, okay, you didn't really have Bradley Chob at all last year, so he's kind of playing in somewhat of a new system.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_02]: Those secondary guys, they got brought in in training camp.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_02]: Camp Smith is no longer Carico who is on IR.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_02]: Jalen Ramsey was traded, right?
- 34:10[SPEAKER_02]: Defensive Bax coach Matthew Arrow noted that none of the dolphins
- 34:16[SPEAKER_02]: three starting cornerbacks were on the roster to start training camp.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_02]: Now Jack Jones now after week four looks decent.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_02]: Russell Douglas looks great.
- 34:29[SPEAKER_02]: Somehow Cornell Armstrong is broadened.
- 34:33[SPEAKER_02]: But if you hear these media pressers with Anthony Weaver, Matthew Arruho, and even the
- 34:42[SPEAKER_02]: They're not pointing at each other's coaches, they're not pointing at the players.
- 34:48[SPEAKER_02]: They're maneuvering and subtly saying that it was roster management, because these players are still chilling together.
- 34:58[SPEAKER_02]: You take a look at the top defenses in the NFL.
- 35:01[SPEAKER_02]: It's the same DC from the last two, three years and the players are also the same.
- 35:06[SPEAKER_02]: You take a look at Denver, you take a look at Buffalo,
- 35:10[SPEAKER_02]: And Buffalo's run defense is worse than the Dolphins run defense, and yet they can still get stops.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like you said, that comes down to continuity, the word we've used a lot here.
- 35:26[SPEAKER_00]: But I think that, you know, we talk about what Anthony Weaver's been doing in terms of, you know, trying more of those pressures that aren't necessarily getting home.
- 35:35[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's one of those deals that, you know,
- 35:38[SPEAKER_00]: If we're going to sit back and play based defense is still getting gas right then you got to try to do something.
- 35:46[SPEAKER_00]: I think that's kind of where Anthony Weaver was, you know, at least early in the season just trying to outsmart the coordinator on the other side, trying to come up with one of those big plays to get them in a situation that actually turns a ball over whether it's a long third down that turns into a punt.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_00]: or a sack, the intersection, those obviously haven't happened yet.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_00]: But in the same sense, the way we've been talking about a lot of the different players having opportunities to get right against the Panthers, I think that could also be the case for Anthony Weaver and the defense.
- 36:19[SPEAKER_00]: When you look at the receiving threats on the Panthers, Tech McMillan is the only one that has over 100 yards receiving in the season.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_00]: So you can go out and, you know, you can kind of mix it up.
- 36:31[SPEAKER_00]: You can put Resoul Douglas on it because McMillan did not run a great 40 is not going to.
- 36:36[SPEAKER_00]: run away from on the field, you can put the little, you know, scrappy, you know, Jack Jones on them sometimes, right?
- 36:44[SPEAKER_00]: Not all the time, right?
- 36:45[SPEAKER_00]: But you can mix it up with that and feel decent about your one-on-one scenario.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_00]: But then the rest of it, you can kind of play a more of a base defense and let these guys understand their different coverages, understand different leverages,
- 37:04[SPEAKER_00]: Defend three, four, five weapons on the offense that you have to be trying to guess which one they're going to go to right now, I mean, chew a hover to solid, but, you know, he doesn't worry me even as much as the, the jets running game did to be honest, so, you know, really going into this game there is one player that I feel like they need to stop on.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_00]: the panther's offense and if you can limit pet McMillan, then I think you're going to be in good shape for the rest of the game.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_00]: It's somebody else that comes out and has a big game and beats them, then you tip their hat, but that's the player that I feel that we have to focus on and then play around that.
- 37:42[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think this game comes down to for the dolphins.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_02]: Can they hold up on the inside of the defensive line and their own offensive line?
- 37:52[SPEAKER_02]: Like if the dolphins' offense is able to get their running game going efficiently,
- 37:57[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's game right there.
- 37:59[SPEAKER_02]: And if the dolphins can blitz effectively, not all the time, but if they blitz effectively and they get home and limit those inside runs for a Chiba Hubbard, they should be able to control this game.
- 38:12[SPEAKER_02]: My only fear is that if they can't get pressure, they are going to pick on Jordan Brooks and Tyrell Dodson in the middle of the field.
- 38:21[SPEAKER_02]: Look, they might be the leading tacklers in the NFL right now.
- 38:25[SPEAKER_02]: But there's a reason there's a leading tackleers in the NFL right now because no one else can properly cover and no one else can properly tackle and if they have to cover the defensive backs or pass rushers deficient seat.
- 38:41[SPEAKER_02]: It's it's going to feel like the end of the jet's game for the dolphins, especially on the road.
- 38:47[SPEAKER_02]: Now, we'll wrap it up with a prediction Eric, what do you see the outcome of this game, look alike.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_01]: you get 200 scrimmage yards from Devon HN.
- 39:03[SPEAKER_01]: That's my big prediction in this one.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_01]: 200 scrimmage yards from HN.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_01]: Dolphins win 27-20.
- 39:13[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going down with the ship with the four guys up front on defense.
- 39:16[SPEAKER_01]: I think he's sack pricey young three times.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah and I'm going to say
- 39:24[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to have a big day running the ball.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_00]: Let's say we get 150 running the ball.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think that it's a game that we get out to a multiple square lead and that we maintain it.
- 39:36[SPEAKER_00]: Not going to call for a 70 point game, right?
- 39:40[SPEAKER_00]: But a 24 or 14, for example, I think would still be a great result in this game.
- 39:47[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, I really don't have this much faith in this defense and the dolphins offered is going to be asked to score a lot and I think they'll be stopped a couple of times just because they're still on the road, they're still trying to figure out how to operate in an actual real-life game scenario without Tyree Kill.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, what better place to do it than up against this
- 40:11[SPEAKER_02]: defense, I would say, but they're on the road, things happen to the dolphins on the road, whether it be, you know, mistakes on penalties, you know, someone not lined up correctly.
- 40:23[SPEAKER_02]: I'll be it.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_02]: I will say, we have not seen a lot of that this season.
- 40:27[SPEAKER_02]: So, no, thank God, knock on wood.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_02]: But I think this is going to be a tough, rinded out game where Carolina
- 40:36[SPEAKER_02]: borrower's back and I think it becomes a 20 through 20 Carolina win.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_02]: I don't have that much faith right now in this dolphin's team.
- 40:48[SPEAKER_02]: I'll just leave it at that bear.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, as always you'll stick with us here on the three arts for carried podcast network part of the five reasons sports network
