- 0:00Speaker 1: Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Could oppression,
- 0:04Speaker 1: or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril,
- 0:10Speaker 1: or sword? Romans 8.35 Dear Heavenly Father, In the midst
- 0:17Speaker 1: of festive lights, shared laughter, and the joy of giving,
- 0:22Speaker 1: we remember the unparalleled gift of your Son, Jesus. His
- 0:28Speaker 1: birth was the beginning of a promise, a promise that
- 0:32Speaker 1: no circumstance or challenge can ever sever the bond of
- 0:37Speaker 1: love He offers. As carols fill the air and we
- 0:41Speaker 1: gather with loved ones, let us be reminded of the
- 0:45Speaker 1: unbreakable love of Christ, a love that chose a humble manger,
- 0:51Speaker 1: a love that endured the cross, and a love that
- 0:54Speaker 1: overcomes every obstacle. May the warmth of the season, the
- 1:00Speaker 1: joy of Christ's birth, and the depth of your love
- 1:04Speaker 1: remind us that we are never alone and nothing can
- 1:09Speaker 1: truly separate us from the embrace of Jesus. Thank you, Father,
- 1:15Speaker 1: for the gift of your love made manifest in the
- 1:19Speaker 1: birth of our Savior. May our Christmas celebrations be filled
- 1:24Speaker 1: with gratitude, joy, and the everlasting hope found in Christ.
- 1:30Speaker 1: In the loving name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
- 1:41Speaker 2: Hear ye! By order of Caesar Augustus, all men in
- 1:45Speaker 2: their families are to be registered for a census in
- 1:48Speaker 2: the city of their family lineage. Failure to register will
- 1:52Speaker 2: result in punishment. This is the will of Rome.
- 1:57Speaker 3: His voice, steely and unemotional, echoed through the streets and alleys,
- 2:02Speaker 3: leaving a chill in the hearts of those who heard it.
- 2:04Speaker 3: His soldiers nailed the decree onto the doorpost of every home. Quirinius'
- 2:09Speaker 3: voice shouted through the city streets of Nazareth, where Joseph
- 2:13Speaker 3: was buying supplies for his workshop. The proclamation threw him
- 2:16Speaker 3: into a storm of uncertainty and worry. The house of David,
- 2:20Speaker 3: Joseph's lineage, was traced back to Bethlehem.
- 2:26Speaker 4: We're so glad you joined us on the Bible in
- 2:28Speaker 4: a Year podcast today. The Bible in a Year podcast
- 2:32Speaker 4: is an outreach of PowerPoint Ministries and can only come
- 2:35Speaker 4: to you each week through the support of listeners just
- 2:38Speaker 4: like you. Your support today is so important that we
- 2:41Speaker 4: want to thank you for your gift by giving you
- 2:43Speaker 4: a copy of my book called The Jesus Book. It
- 2:47Speaker 4: is a powerful guide that shows how every book of
- 2:49Speaker 4: the Bible points to Jesus and how his living word,
- 2:53Speaker 4: the truth of God's word, will transform your life. So
- 2:56Speaker 4: to get a copy of the Jesus book, simply go
- 2:59Speaker 4: to jackgraham.org slash Jesus. That's jackgraham.org slash Jesus. And thank
- 3:07Speaker 4: you for your support. Today's episode is a narrative based
- 3:11Speaker 4: on Luke chapter 2, verses 1 through 5. Although the
- 3:16Speaker 4: Bible doesn't describe the long journey Mary and Joseph took
- 3:19Speaker 4: from Nazareth to Bethlehem, we know that it must have
- 3:22Speaker 4: been wrought with challenges that tested their young marriage. Romans 8,
- 3:28Speaker 4: verses 38 and 39 says, Who shall separate us from
- 3:32Speaker 4: the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution,
- 3:37Speaker 4: or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? Every episode
- 3:42Speaker 4: from now until the end of our series will showcase
- 3:45Speaker 4: a new struggle. Mary and Joseph must endure robberies, storms, rejection,
- 3:51Speaker 4: and conspiracies. Yet God's love and divine plan will cut
- 3:56Speaker 4: through the tragedy and turn it all into triumph. The
- 4:01Speaker 4: journey to Bethlehem is a poignant reminder of God's powerful love,
- 4:06Speaker 4: a love willing to journey through hardship, risk, uncertainty, and
- 4:11Speaker 4: the darkest valleys to obey God's will. We can imagine
- 4:15Speaker 4: their challenges, the physical strain of the journey, societal judgment
- 4:19Speaker 4: due to Mary's mysterious pregnancy, and the anxiety of a
- 4:23Speaker 4: young couple about to become parents. On top of that,
- 4:27Speaker 4: there's the mounting pressure of knowing their child was the
- 4:30Speaker 4: promised Messiah. This episode will feature a new type of
- 4:37Speaker 4: challenge for Mary and Joseph. Trials, challenges, and hardships can
- 4:42Speaker 4: tear a relationship apart or strengthen it. Will this journey
- 4:46Speaker 4: solidify Mary and Joseph's bond or tear them apart? I'd
- 4:51Speaker 4: like to promise you this episode has a happy ending,
- 4:54Speaker 4: but it doesn't. Just like Mary and Joseph, we must
- 4:58Speaker 4: endure momentary trials before stepping into triumph. We must endure
- 5:05Speaker 4: momentary trials before stepping into triumph. Let's immerse ourselves now
- 5:10Speaker 4: in the story. In the end, we'll unpack Christmas themes
- 5:14Speaker 4: to strengthen our faith.
- 5:17Speaker 5: The streets of Nazareth, usually abuzz with laughter and trade,
- 5:21Speaker 5: grew anxious and frantic. Families huddled in corners to discuss
- 5:26Speaker 5: the journey ahead. Rumours and tales of treacherous roads rife
- 5:30Speaker 5: with robbers grew more terrifying by the day. Amidst the chaos,
- 5:35Speaker 5: Joseph waded through the marketplace, gathering the last of their
- 5:39Speaker 5: supplies for the journey ahead. He was no stranger to
- 5:42Speaker 5: the dangers of travel. As a stonemason, he often needed
- 5:46Speaker 5: to do business outside of Nazareth. But with Mary in
- 5:49Speaker 5: her delicate condition, the journey was a heavy burden on
- 5:52Speaker 5: his heart. They'd heard dark tales of bandits lurking in
- 5:56Speaker 5: the desert shadows, striking unsuspecting travelers and leaving them with nothing.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Joseph felt the weight of his responsibility to protect his
- 6:05Speaker 5: wife and the unborn child. Night after night, as they
- 6:09Speaker 5: prepared for the journey, Joseph would glance at the horizon
- 6:13Speaker 5: as if trying to discern what lay in wait. Mary,
- 6:16Speaker 5: watching him from their doorway, could see the furrows of
- 6:19Speaker 5: worry deepen on his brow. She was relieved that her
- 6:22Speaker 5: husband was strong and capable, but Mary bore a strength
- 6:26Speaker 5: Joseph lacked. She didn't share Joseph's fear. Instead, she had
- 6:31Speaker 5: a peace that God would provide. She was not naive
- 6:35Speaker 5: to think tragedy wasn't possible. But she also knew God
- 6:38Speaker 5: wouldn't begin this work if he did not intend on
- 6:41Speaker 5: completing it. One evening, as twilight painted the horizon with
- 6:44Speaker 5: hues of gold and red, Mary approached her husband. He
- 6:48Speaker 5: was lost in thought, his gaze fixed on the distant roads.
- 6:52Speaker 5: His face was painted with a familiar look of worry.
- 6:55Speaker 5: Mary gently touched his shoulder and spoke softly.
- 6:58Speaker 1: What are you thinking about?
- 6:59Speaker 5: She asked, already knowing the answer. About tomorrow's journey. Joseph replied.
- 7:05Speaker 5: Going through the list in my head to make sure
- 7:07Speaker 5: we have everything we need. His face betrayed his words.
- 7:11Speaker 5: Joseph was consumed with doubt, not in God, but in
- 7:14Speaker 5: his own ability to carry out his duty. Mary resisted
- 7:18Speaker 5: the urge to remind him that he didn't need to worry.
- 7:20Speaker 5: Telling somebody who was anxious to stop worrying was about
- 7:23Speaker 5: as useful as telling a dog not to eat from
- 7:25Speaker 5: the bowl while it was eating. Instead, she leaned against
- 7:29Speaker 5: his shoulder and looked quietly at the horizon. Joseph leaned
- 7:32Speaker 5: his cheek closer to her head and sighed.
- 7:35Speaker 2: I know I.
- 7:35Speaker 5: Shouldn't worry, but it's hard not to, especially with what's
- 7:39Speaker 5: at stake. She smiled, the kind of smile that made
- 7:43Speaker 5: Joseph's heart melt.
- 7:45Speaker 1: You have a protector's heart, Joseph.
- 7:47Speaker 5: I love that about you.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Together, we can face anything.
- 7:51Speaker 5: I am sure of it. Her words were reassuring at
- 7:54Speaker 5: the moment, but Joseph still felt a weight on his
- 7:57Speaker 5: shoulders growing heavier. They embarked early the following day. Joseph
- 8:02Speaker 5: packed the donkey tightly and hoisted Mary on top. She
- 8:06Speaker 5: smiled down at him, and they left. Families, old and young,
- 8:10Speaker 5: streamed down the pass out of Nazareth, each one burdened
- 8:13Speaker 5: by the edict of Caesar. They all began in the
- 8:16Speaker 5: same direction, but eventually split down many roads to register
- 8:20Speaker 5: in the city of their heritage. The town of Nazareth
- 8:23Speaker 5: slowly receded into the distance, its familiar sights and sounds
- 8:27Speaker 5: replaced by the vastness of the road. As the days
- 8:30Speaker 5: wore on and the sun deceased, Mary and Joseph set
- 8:33Speaker 5: out camp under the vast canopy of the stars. The
- 8:36Speaker 5: heavens seemed to wink down at them, casting a silvery
- 8:39Speaker 5: glow over the landscape. While Mary rested, Joseph remained awake.
- 8:43Speaker 5: his eyes scanning the horizon for any sign of danger.
- 8:47Speaker 5: The weight of potential threats kept him vigilant. He refused
- 8:50Speaker 5: to sleep. Instead, he leaned back on a stone with
- 8:53Speaker 5: his hands firmly placed on his dagger. He refused to
- 8:57Speaker 5: let anything harm Mary or the child. I can't let
- 9:00Speaker 5: them down, Joseph sighed. He peered down at his bride.
- 9:04Speaker 5: She shivered from the cold, so Joseph removed his coat
- 9:07Speaker 5: and placed it on her. I love you. he whispered softly,
- 9:10Speaker 5: stroking her dark curls. The days melted into one another,
- 9:14Speaker 5: a blur of sunrises and sunsets. The vastness of the
- 9:18Speaker 5: desert stretched before them, its ever-changing peaks and valleys seeming
- 9:22Speaker 5: both majestic and menacing. With every step, the weight of
- 9:26Speaker 5: their journey grew, not in their bags, but in their hearts.
- 9:30Speaker 5: By day, the sun bore down on them, its rays unrelenting.
- 9:35Speaker 5: Mary's pregnancy sapped her of strength, but not of her hope.
- 9:39Speaker 5: As they walked, she would wax poetry about the Lord's
- 9:41Speaker 5: blessing on them. Her relentless hope gave Joseph enough to
- 9:44Speaker 5: keep walking beside her and the donkey. By night, the
- 9:48Speaker 5: desert came alive with its secrets, the sounds of wolves
- 9:51Speaker 5: in the distance and the whispers of the wind. Joseph,
- 9:54Speaker 5: determined and ever watchful, grew wearier with each passing day.
- 9:58Speaker 5: The shadows of rumoured banquets played tricks on his mind,
- 10:02Speaker 5: making every rustling bush or distant noise a potential threat.
- 10:05Speaker 5: On the fourth evening, as the sapphire sky turned deep indigo,
- 10:10Speaker 5: Mary took his hand and saw the exhaustion on Joseph's face.
- 10:13Speaker 1: You've borne the weight of our journey for so.
- 10:15Speaker 5: Long, she said gently. Rest now, let me keep watch.
- 10:19Speaker 5: There was a silent battle in Joseph's eye, the protective
- 10:23Speaker 5: husband against the weary traveller. But in the end, fatigue won.
- 10:28Speaker 5: He nodded, his eyelids heavy, and lay down, wrapping himself
- 10:31Speaker 5: in a blanket. Wake me if you sense any danger,
- 10:35Speaker 5: he murmured, his voice a tired whisper. Mary nodded, her
- 10:39Speaker 5: gaze fixed on the horizon, ears attuned to every sound.
- 10:43Speaker 5: She hummed softly, a lullaby she'd once heard long ago.
- 10:47Speaker 5: letting its gentle cadence soothe Joseph into a deep sleep.
- 10:51Speaker 5: But the road, with its myriad of mysteries, had its
- 10:54Speaker 5: own plans. As the night deepened, two shadowy figures approached
- 10:58Speaker 5: their campsite. Drawn by the soft glow of the dying campfire,
- 11:02Speaker 5: they moved stealthily, their intentions clear. They began to pilfer
- 11:07Speaker 5: through Mary and Joseph's belongings in search of money and food.
- 11:11Speaker 5: Engrossed in her thoughts and nodding off from exhaustion, Mary
- 11:14Speaker 5: didn't notice them until it was too late. She turned
- 11:18Speaker 5: to see them and held back panic. Mary wasn't foolish
- 11:21Speaker 5: enough to scream. She knew that if she shouted for Joseph,
- 11:24Speaker 5: they would kill him before he could even reach his feet.
- 11:27Speaker 5: Mary remained still, pretending to sleep, occasionally looking over. Her
- 11:33Speaker 5: heart was pounding. She was paralyzed in an unwinnable situation
- 11:38Speaker 5: as she watched the robbers take the donkey with them.
- 11:40Speaker 5: That is when Mary finally chose to speak.
- 11:43Speaker 2: Joseph!
- 11:44Speaker 5: She whispered in an intense tone.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Two men have taken everything.
- 11:49Speaker 5: Joseph rose frantically and unsheathed his dagger. Hearing Joseph, the
- 11:52Speaker 5: robbers quickened and ran into the thick of the night.
- 11:55Speaker 5: Joseph began to run after them, mind racing with rage
- 11:58Speaker 5: and weariness. However, just as he was beginning to gain
- 12:02Speaker 5: on the thieves, he heard Mary's voice. Joseph, where are you?
- 12:06Speaker 5: Joseph stopped. If he continued, something might happen to Mary.
- 12:10Speaker 5: He watched the dim figures disappear into the night. Joseph
- 12:13Speaker 5: turned back to camp. We've lost everything, he shouted, his
- 12:17Speaker 5: voice trembling with anger and regret. Mary said nothing. Silence
- 12:22Speaker 5: stretched between them, heavy and thick. Words unspoken hung in
- 12:26Speaker 5: the air as Joseph buried his face in his hands.
- 12:30Speaker 5: He was frustrated and boiling over with regret. Mary, trying
- 12:34Speaker 5: to bridge the gap between them, reached out a hand,
- 12:37Speaker 5: but Joseph pulled away, consumed by his internal turmoil. How
- 12:41Speaker 5: are we going to survive without any food or money?
- 12:44Speaker 5: How are you going to finish the journey without the donkey?
- 12:48Speaker 5: Joseph had sold all his tools to pay for these
- 12:50Speaker 5: supplies and the donkey. He had sacrificed so much, and
- 12:54Speaker 5: now it was all gone. He seethed in anger and disappointment.
- 12:59Speaker 5: Mary thought of defending herself, but chose to remain silent instead.
- 13:03Speaker 5: If Mary was good at anything, it was pondering things
- 13:06Speaker 5: in her heart and allowing deep emotions to be fully processed.
- 13:09Speaker 5: Joseph was uncharacteristically upset, so she gave him space and
- 13:13Speaker 5: returned to her blanket. Neither of them slept that night.
- 13:17Speaker 5: Joseph spent the rest of the night replaying the events
- 13:20Speaker 5: in his mind. The following day wore on in oppressive silence. Joseph,
- 13:25Speaker 5: grappling with his guilt, turned inward, while Mary, battling her
- 13:29Speaker 5: own regret, longed for the comforting embrace of her husband.
- 13:32Speaker 5: She wanted to hear him forgive her. She wanted them
- 13:35Speaker 5: to talk and embrace the trial as a team.
- 13:38Speaker 1: But instead.
- 13:39Speaker 5: They walked in silence. The desert around them seemed to
- 13:42Speaker 5: mirror their emotional state. Its vastness was a reflection of
- 13:46Speaker 5: the growing cousin between them. Their journey, which had started
- 13:50Speaker 5: with hope and faith, now felt heavy with despair and doubt.
- 13:54Speaker 5: But as with all nights, this too would pass, giving
- 13:58Speaker 5: way to a new dawn and the promise of redemption.
- 14:02Speaker 4: During a wedding ceremony, couples vowed to stick by each
- 14:06Speaker 4: other through thick and thin, Before God and witnesses, they
- 14:09Speaker 4: stare into each other's eyes and promise to love each other,
- 14:13Speaker 4: for better or worse, richer or poorer, and in sickness
- 14:16Speaker 4: or health. During the euphoria and bliss of a wedding,
- 14:21Speaker 4: it's easy to make those vows. But when hardships arise,
- 14:26Speaker 4: the foundation of a marriage is tested. Just as gold
- 14:30Speaker 4: is refined by fire, removing impurities, The trials faced in
- 14:35Speaker 4: a marriage can purify and strengthen the bond between spouses.
- 14:40Speaker 4: This requires intentional dedication, faith, mutual support, forgiveness, and, most
- 14:47Speaker 4: importantly of all, love. Today's episode brought new struggles for
- 14:53Speaker 4: Mary and Joseph. As if the journey wasn't hard enough,
- 14:56Speaker 4: they lost everything they had for the rest of their journey.
- 15:01Speaker 4: and we get the sense that Joseph blames Mary for it. Yet,
- 15:05Speaker 4: we hold on to hope that Mary and Joseph's relationship
- 15:08Speaker 4: will be strengthened in the coming days. Our relationship with
- 15:14Speaker 4: God can be solidified and deepened in the hardest trials.
- 15:20Speaker 4: Our faith is tested when everything seems uncertain, chaotic, or challenging.
- 15:26Speaker 4: When we trust in God's promises and love, we find
- 15:29Speaker 4: hope that endures and love that strengthens us. Hope in
- 15:34Speaker 4: difficult circumstances is a theme that resonates deeply with all
- 15:38Speaker 4: of us. Life can be challenging. It can be unpredictable.
- 15:43Speaker 4: But amidst the storms, there's a beacon of hope we
- 15:47Speaker 4: can cling to. That hope is Jesus, the Savior born
- 15:52Speaker 4: in the manger in a little town called Bethlehem, after
- 15:56Speaker 4: a challenging journey by two faithful servants. In your own life,
- 16:02Speaker 4: you might be facing a difficult road right now. Remember
- 16:07Speaker 4: that God's promises stand firm. Just as he was with
- 16:11Speaker 4: Mary and Joseph, guiding them, he's with you. Cling to him.
- 16:17Speaker 4: Trust in his promises and let his enduring hope shine
- 16:21Speaker 4: in your circumstances. Remember that our God is greater than
- 16:26Speaker 4: any challenge we might face. The God who guided Mary
- 16:30Speaker 4: and Joseph to Bethlehem and raised Jesus from the dead
- 16:34Speaker 4: is the same God with you today. Let's trust him.
- 16:38Speaker 4: Let's rely on his promises. Let's allow his love to
- 16:42Speaker 4: be the anchor of our hope in any circumstance. In
- 16:47Speaker 4: our next story, Joseph and Mary will desperately search for supplies.
- 16:52Speaker 4: As they venture into a nearby city, Joseph's dedication to
- 16:55Speaker 4: Mary will require him to take even more risks. Join
- 16:59Speaker 4: us for our next episode, The Road to Bethlehem, Part 2.
