- 0:05Speaker 1: I wonder if we would have been friends in primary
- 0:08Speaker 1: really definitely not. I mean, there would have been the
- 0:11Speaker 1: language buried, you know, I reckon. It would have been
- 0:16Speaker 1: like you'd come home and your mom would be all like,
- 0:19Speaker 1: little pav how is your play date with that Australian
- 0:22Speaker 1: boy Gordon? And you feel like, mamay do you have
- 0:25Speaker 1: an Asian accent? But you would have just been like mama.
- 0:31Speaker 1: It was terrible. He I wanted to watch the Scooby Doo.
- 0:37Speaker 1: I wanted to watch the dog who solves mysteries and clothes,
- 0:40Speaker 1: but he wanted to me to watch some kangaroo called Skippy.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Since one of my French we we Papa.
- 0:50Speaker 1: Did they feed you at all, little Pablo? They gave
- 0:53Speaker 1: me something called savory shapes? What's not Cavanagh, I'll see
- 1:00Speaker 1: your bosh. No, no, Mama, you're not playing with that.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Good then again, oh yeah, that would have been fun. Yeah,
- 1:10Speaker 1: it would have been a bit of a nerd. They
- 1:13Speaker 1: called me tlm TLM ladies man. You were seven?
- 1:21Speaker 2: Yeah, fighting him off with a.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Stick, Yeah right, he seagulls fighting over a chip. I
- 1:30Speaker 1: got to spend some more time Toyota ask me if
- 1:33Speaker 1: I wanted the gr Coroller again. Oh again, Yeah, look
- 1:37Speaker 1: at you, and yes I will I'll have that for
- 1:40Speaker 1: another thanks. Oh god, that's a good car. It's really good. Yeah,
- 1:45Speaker 1: it's like, when you think about it, eighty thousand dollars
- 1:48Speaker 1: a small car like that, it's a lot of money. Yeah,
- 1:51Speaker 1: it's a lot of money. But people write it off
- 1:53Speaker 1: as grown for a Corolla. Thanks, it's not a Corolla,
- 1:59Speaker 1: it really isn't.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Yeah. But would you spend eighty grand on it?
- 2:02Speaker 1: Yes?
- 2:02Speaker 2: Really?
- 2:03Speaker 1: Yeah, because I think of it, because think about it. Yeah. Well,
- 2:06Speaker 1: because when you think about it, you're spending eighty grand
- 2:10Speaker 1: on a really well engineered machine. It's an investment. It's
- 2:15Speaker 1: a proper race car. Like it's a proper, proper track car.
- 2:18Speaker 1: And the way they've set it up, it's not a
- 2:20Speaker 1: car that was built in the normal Toyota factory with
- 2:23Speaker 1: all the commoners cars.
- 2:26Speaker 2: The land cruisers.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Actually, just very quickly on race cars for the road.
- 2:31Speaker 3: You know, Hyundai, if you buy an end car, they
- 2:33Speaker 3: give you a track warranty, so if you take it
- 2:35Speaker 3: to the track and it breaks, they cover the warranty.
- 2:37Speaker 3: And a lot of other brands that would be helpful
- 2:39Speaker 3: for me, that include my neck.
- 2:41Speaker 1: I just crashed it into a wall. I think it's
- 2:43Speaker 1: still under warranty. Cough up.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Did you see at Goodwood they had the new Iron
- 2:50Speaker 3: five Inn, they had the RN twenty two E, they
- 2:54Speaker 3: had the Envision seventy four. Yes, except the R in
- 2:57Speaker 3: twenty two. We had a small excursion off the track.
- 3:01Speaker 3: It was hammering along and it got to the corner
- 3:03Speaker 3: where pretty much everyone crashes. That just has no experience
- 3:07Speaker 3: at the Goodwood Hill climb and he's just just overcooked
- 3:12Speaker 3: the turn in and it's just understeered off the road
- 3:15Speaker 3: into the hay bales.
- 3:16Speaker 2: He totally destroyed the car.
- 3:18Speaker 1: That would have been a fun conversation.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Do you reckon? That's good publicity or bad publicity?
- 3:23Speaker 3: So everyone shared it because it was filmed like five
- 3:26Speaker 3: different angles, and he like buried it into the hay
- 3:28Speaker 3: bales and the car was pretty much destroyed. Drigon, that's
- 3:31Speaker 3: good publicity or bad because if you didn't know about
- 3:34Speaker 3: the car previously, you do now.
- 3:36Speaker 2: But is that a bad way to show it?
- 3:38Speaker 1: Perhaps? Also too, it's not exactly the car's fault, it's
- 3:41Speaker 1: human ewa, yeah, so it's not exactly bad publicity. I
- 3:45Speaker 1: would like write the car off. Although I did find
- 3:47Speaker 1: the No he did that? Yeah, well, you know, I
- 3:50Speaker 1: did find the Ionic five and kind of underwhelming.
- 3:55Speaker 3: Well, I think that the Goodwood is it's a hard
- 3:58Speaker 3: place to launch a car because you can't really do
- 4:01Speaker 3: anything with it. You drive it up the hill, everything
- 4:03Speaker 3: looks slow. I've been there before, and there's so much
- 4:06Speaker 3: going on that unless your car is like a top
- 4:09Speaker 3: fuel drag, so you're not going to hear it and
- 4:11Speaker 3: you don't see it for very long, so it's not
- 4:14Speaker 3: an exciting place to launch it. Actually, one of the
- 4:17Speaker 3: Ionic five ends they had there had a drift stick,
- 4:19Speaker 3: so they basically set it into real drive mode and
- 4:21Speaker 3: were able to use a drift stick to then do
- 4:23Speaker 3: drifting and stuff. But even then, that's now become so
- 4:26Speaker 3: mainstream that it doesn't really set your vehicle apart from others.
- 4:29Speaker 1: So yeah, and it's just this little party trick that
- 4:31Speaker 1: most evs are kind of doing with a bit of power.
- 4:34Speaker 2: So I don't know.
- 4:35Speaker 1: I just found it like that baby blue that they
- 4:38Speaker 1: launched it in. Although that Vision seventy four is a
- 4:44Speaker 1: fucking machine.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Yep. I'm glad they didn't crash that.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Given us hydrogen, Yes, that would if.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Goodwood has been canceled forever, it is a tough place
- 4:55Speaker 3: to launch your car.
- 4:55Speaker 2: You're right.
- 4:56Speaker 1: I mean when you get cars like the Porsche bay
- 4:59Speaker 1: sing A dropping stuff there. Yeah, geez those cars.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Yeah, But I mean if you have a look at
- 5:05Speaker 3: stuff like Lambo, I mean they drive the car up
- 5:07Speaker 3: the hill, but now that they're all so quiet, it's like,
- 5:10Speaker 3: what do you And they often will just put an
- 5:13Speaker 3: influencer in it to drive it up. And that's what
- 5:15Speaker 3: actually installed a chicine just before that turned out for
- 5:18Speaker 3: the influencer sessions. Because so many people were crashing, they
- 5:21Speaker 3: set up a chicaine so everyone had to slow down
- 5:24Speaker 3: for there unless you were an actual race driver. Yeah,
- 5:28Speaker 3: it's an interesting event and I'm glad that it still
- 5:30Speaker 3: happens because it is an unreal event. If you ever
- 5:32Speaker 3: get the chance to go to Goodwood, it is so
- 5:34Speaker 3: much fun. That is bucket lest The car park is amazing,
- 5:38Speaker 3: Like the car park where you park to walk into
- 5:40Speaker 3: the event is incredible. The amount of just awesome cars
- 5:43Speaker 3: that are parked up on grass is cool. Except this
- 5:46Speaker 3: year it was raining and when I went last time
- 5:49Speaker 3: it had rained on the last day and the car
- 5:51Speaker 3: park ends up becoming like this mud bath. And you
- 5:54Speaker 3: can imagine like some of these low supercars trying.
- 5:56Speaker 1: To trying to get out of the mud on Semis.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Wouldn't you wouldn't you feel weird just rocking up to
- 6:01Speaker 1: bloody Goodwood in his Auzuki Swift.
- 6:04Speaker 2: Yeah, fuck out the back.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Hate The new Land Cruise, Prido and seventy series dropped
- 6:09Speaker 1: this week.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Yeah what do you think, Well, let's start with the
- 6:12Speaker 3: seventy series. I think that looks totally stupid. They've gone
- 6:15Speaker 3: to like Ali Express and gone, oh, can you just
- 6:18Speaker 3: go to like the JDM department and just find the
- 6:22Speaker 3: weirdest ricey looking headlights you can find and just put
- 6:25Speaker 3: it on the front for us.
- 6:26Speaker 1: Colin, Yeah, we got some of those those fucking headlights
- 6:30Speaker 1: we born from Beijing. Check a couple of those in
- 6:34Speaker 1: the seventy series. Mate, Yeah, well yeah fuck them, fuck them,
- 6:38Speaker 1: we'll flog them off.
- 6:40Speaker 2: I'll about it.
- 6:41Speaker 1: But yeah, they've got those lights.
- 6:43Speaker 3: And then they've put a four cylinder diesel in it,
- 6:46Speaker 3: which I don't think anyone will buy a Well, it's
- 6:48Speaker 3: also made it to an auto.
- 6:50Speaker 2: It's like, no one driving that one's an auto.
- 6:53Speaker 3: So thankfully the V is still available, but I just reckon,
- 6:57Speaker 3: they've just ruined the design of this thing.
- 6:58Speaker 2: The current one looks great.
- 7:01Speaker 1: Well that's because it hasn't really moved.
- 7:03Speaker 3: Much exactly, So why change it? And why make it
- 7:06Speaker 3: look like that? It just looks so like just hipster,
- 7:10Speaker 3: and you.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Don't like the like a contemporary look and an old
- 7:14Speaker 1: fashioned car look a tribute if you like, if you're
- 7:16Speaker 1: going to do retro look if yeah.
- 7:18Speaker 2: If you're going to do the contemporary look, make the
- 7:19Speaker 2: whole thing modern, which they haven't done. While I'm on
- 7:21Speaker 2: a rant here.
- 7:22Speaker 1: For what it's worth, I actually quite liked it. I
- 7:24Speaker 1: didn't mind it.
- 7:25Speaker 3: I mean, well, it's the same with like this is
- 7:27Speaker 3: why we wouldn't be friends growing up.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Even the same with the with the Ford Bronco, like
- 7:31Speaker 1: the Heritage edition now, but that looks good.
- 7:34Speaker 2: The Bronco actually looks good.
- 7:36Speaker 1: So what's the problem with the Tweeter Because they're doing
- 7:38Speaker 1: the same sort of stuff.
- 7:39Speaker 2: But the seventy series is just meant to be old.
- 7:42Speaker 1: And just if that's the case, why even bring it back?
- 7:45Speaker 3: Well exactly, I don't know why they've changed it, And
- 7:47Speaker 3: inside the cabin they've even just made it even more
- 7:49Speaker 3: annoying for the infotainment system. They've they've put a new
- 7:52Speaker 3: steering wheel on it, which has steering controls for volume
- 7:55Speaker 3: and stuff, but the actual infotainment unit they've removed the knob.
- 7:58Speaker 3: So if you want to make an each to that,
- 8:00Speaker 3: you don't. You just have two buttons to press and
- 8:02Speaker 3: then the rest is a touchscreen. Yeah, I hate that,
- 8:05Speaker 3: don't want that. The old one just had an ob
- 8:06Speaker 3: that you could turn for volume up and down. So yeah,
- 8:09Speaker 3: I don't know. I think they've kind of ruined the
- 8:11Speaker 3: design and putting a full cylinder in it. I just
- 8:13Speaker 3: don't know who's going to buy one with a full cylinder.
- 8:15Speaker 3: The whole purpose of that car was that it's a
- 8:17Speaker 3: V eight diesel that you can still buy.
- 8:18Speaker 2: You wanted it with a full cylinder, you also go.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Buy Highlux Hilex is like forty grand cheaper and available
- 8:24Speaker 3: straight away.
- 8:25Speaker 2: It's got the same engine.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Why would you not just buy that the Prato However, Yes,
- 8:31Speaker 1: that looks great now that I agree with.
- 8:33Speaker 3: I think that looks sensational. Yeah, and they did exactly
- 8:36Speaker 3: what to does. They've made everything great and then they've
- 8:39Speaker 3: gone hold on, hold on, we're just gonna just totally
- 8:43Speaker 3: screw this up, and they've gone and put the high
- 8:46Speaker 3: lux diesel in it. It's like, would you not look
- 8:50Speaker 3: at what's happening in that segment with stuff like Everest
- 8:52Speaker 3: and go, all right, let's go get a V six diesel.
- 8:54Speaker 3: That's true, or in the States they're fitting it with
- 8:57Speaker 3: the hybrid out of the Lexus Lexis, which is turbo
- 9:01Speaker 3: four hybrid. Now the reason they can't or won't fit
- 9:05Speaker 3: a V six to it is that vehicle now, to
- 9:08Speaker 3: amortize cost, shares a platform with the three hundred series,
- 9:11Speaker 3: so they're on the same wheelbase. The Prito was slightly
- 9:14Speaker 3: shorter just due to overhangs. But they can't go put
- 9:17Speaker 3: a V six diesel because what the reason would you
- 9:20Speaker 3: then have to go spend an extra forty grand on
- 9:22Speaker 3: a three hundred series if you could just get a
- 9:24Speaker 3: Prato with the same engine or a detuned version of
- 9:27Speaker 3: that engine. So I think they've kind of backed themselves
- 9:29Speaker 3: into a corner here because that is going to weigh
- 9:31Speaker 3: more than the current Prito, and the current Prito feels
- 9:34Speaker 3: fairly underdone with five hundred yit metas of talk, So
- 9:37Speaker 3: I don't know what their logic is with this, and
- 9:41Speaker 3: people will buy it.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Ultimately because it's a Toyota. Yeah, and it looks expensive.
- 9:45Speaker 2: It'll be more expensive.
- 9:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I think they'll sell a bunch of them, no doubt.
- 9:49Speaker 2: I think they will as well.
- 9:50Speaker 3: I just think that the thing that would stop me
- 9:52Speaker 3: from buying one is just the drive train. It's like,
- 9:54Speaker 3: no one wants a four cylinder diesel in a car
- 9:57Speaker 3: like that.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Tell you what I want, and I think I could
- 9:59Speaker 1: be possibly in the minority here the new Santa Fe.
- 10:04Speaker 1: I like it. I like it.
- 10:06Speaker 2: You would, yeah, just.
- 10:08Speaker 1: You know, I like it. I mean, look, not as
- 10:10Speaker 1: much as Soprato, but I don't think they did a
- 10:12Speaker 1: crap job at all.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Did you see the back of it?
- 10:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it's kind of like the people who did the
- 10:18Speaker 1: front just paid no attention to the people who did
- 10:21Speaker 1: the back.
- 10:21Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Then the wall just got lifted up and they're like, oh,
- 10:24Speaker 1: would you guys do the back? Oh yeah, that's heaps
- 10:27Speaker 1: different from what we did. Yeah. Oh, you dropped his
- 10:31Speaker 1: ass a little bit there. Okay, all right, okay, can
- 10:36Speaker 1: I help myself to the crack table as Well's I
- 10:40Speaker 1: like it. I like the ridiculous copper and the black
- 10:42Speaker 1: ribs I think it's fun.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Well, I actually saw on crean an autoblog they published
- 10:47Speaker 3: an image of a third row window that they've installed
- 10:50Speaker 3: in them. But it's like a vertical window. I can't
- 10:52Speaker 3: really make sense of it, and I don't know if
- 10:54Speaker 3: it'll be an option or not, but it looks really
- 10:56Speaker 3: interesting a vertical window.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Yeah it's really the re quarter panels or yeah, oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 11:02Speaker 2: It's really strange. I really can't make sense of it.
- 11:05Speaker 3: So I think it's like a I don't know if
- 11:06Speaker 3: it opens or whether it's just a vision sort of thing,
- 11:09Speaker 3: but yeah, it's It looks very fascinating to me.
- 11:11Speaker 2: But I reckon the red definitely needed some extra work.
- 11:14Speaker 1: I think. I think what's going on with that requarter
- 11:16Speaker 1: panel is that the windows the same color as like
- 11:20Speaker 1: the paint work, like the black, So I think it's
- 11:22Speaker 1: hidden quite well.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, I don't know. I think it's color dependent.
- 11:25Speaker 3: I think it'll be interesting to see.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Racist you've always been like this, always.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Ever since primary.
- 11:33Speaker 1: She's hot, not more color. I'm a like a shade
- 11:40Speaker 1: of Croatian.
- 11:45Speaker 3: But no, I think it's it's Yeah, everything looks great
- 11:48Speaker 3: except the rear.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Do you know what I do, Like, is the new
- 11:51Speaker 1: software update that they've put in it actually looks nice.
- 11:55Speaker 3: Yeah, look, I think they're improving. We just drove the
- 11:59Speaker 3: new Kona recently and that had a sort of different.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Was that the bright Green made?
- 12:04Speaker 3: Yeah, the tennis ball is called, But yeah, I think
- 12:07Speaker 3: they're doing better with her infotament system. The thing I
- 12:10Speaker 3: still don't understand though, is how do you have wireless
- 12:12Speaker 3: Apple Car play on a base model but not on
- 12:14Speaker 3: the top spick.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Yeah, that still makes very little sense to me.
- 12:17Speaker 1: Yeah it is. There's obviously some sort of a there's
- 12:21Speaker 1: something we don't know in terms of like, I don't
- 12:22Speaker 1: know a court case or funny for us not to
- 12:24Speaker 1: know about a courtness, but there's got to be something
- 12:28Speaker 1: going on there. I can't work out what it would be.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Yep.
- 12:31Speaker 1: My super outback is wireless.
- 12:35Speaker 2: Has it arrived? Nope?
- 12:37Speaker 1: No, it's still laughing floating in the ocean, somewhere hopefully
- 12:41Speaker 1: above the ocean.
- 12:42Speaker 2: Your career, Yeah, oh yeah.
- 12:45Speaker 1: I'm very much out there. Do you know what's exciting?
- 12:48Speaker 1: Who's coming in today?
- 12:50Speaker 2: Trevalon?
- 12:50Speaker 1: Hell No, that's a shame, not really but not really. No,
- 12:56Speaker 1: do you know what it's sorry doing on the weekend
- 12:58Speaker 1: he was played with his new drone. He's like, flakes,
- 13:01Speaker 1: guys for this great drone I got. I think it's
- 13:03Speaker 1: the best drone ever. And he took it out to
- 13:05Speaker 1: see to fucking look at the boat that's got his
- 13:09Speaker 1: little Koupra on it, like, oh my Coopra boards on
- 13:13Speaker 1: that boat.
- 13:14Speaker 2: They shoot it down.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Yeah, totally. He actually attached a little gun and then
- 13:20Speaker 1: he just like he could, he found the nearest rainbow
- 13:23Speaker 1: Warrior and just tried to shoot at it, saving the environment.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Not on my watch. And yes, I just did finger guns.
- 13:35Speaker 1: I just did Trevor along doing finger guns. But yeah, no,
- 13:39Speaker 1: not Trevorlong. We have We've got Bev Brock coming in.
- 13:43Speaker 2: Ah, very cool.
- 13:44Speaker 1: Let's just get into it. Yeah, Bev Brock's looking at
- 13:50Speaker 1: us like what she got herself into.
- 13:54Speaker 4: Let me tell you years ago, we did Peter when
- 13:56Speaker 4: Peter was still alive. We did a talk on the
- 13:59Speaker 4: sports what was it? And they hadn't given us. They
- 14:05Speaker 4: wanted the pair of us here, and they started off
- 14:09Speaker 4: and it was fine, and then they got into asking
- 14:12Speaker 4: Peter about Tantric six and and he's just fro because
- 14:17Speaker 4: he's was very private person. Believe it. Or not as
- 14:21Speaker 4: anything issue of personal stuff. He just and he's looked
- 14:25Speaker 4: at me. He's gone bright red. I'm thinking, we've got
- 14:27Speaker 4: to rescue this call bugger. So the whole tone of
- 14:32Speaker 4: the interview session became quite hilarious.
- 14:36Speaker 1: I love anyway, tantric sex. Let's know when, more like when,
- 14:43Speaker 1: more like Arndeau's brush with fame. So a little pavle
- 14:47Speaker 1: over here, and he's going to play the part of
- 14:49Speaker 1: arn Doux. And by the end of this actually sketch
- 14:51Speaker 1: a picture which is more like a stick figure. I
- 14:54Speaker 1: don't know why he puts a willy on it every time.
- 14:57Speaker 1: So weird, so immature. I would we probably should start,
- 15:01Speaker 1: I guess from the beginning, because where you sort of
- 15:05Speaker 1: grew up was w a yes, and it was an
- 15:09Speaker 1: interesting time because it was nineteen forty seven, the war.
- 15:12Speaker 1: I guess it just wrapped up. And you're a small
- 15:16Speaker 1: town out of per no town, no.
- 15:18Speaker 4: Town, no town, Oh my goodness, out in the middle
- 15:20Speaker 4: of nowhere. There was if we needed, if mum and
- 15:27Speaker 4: dad needed, they hooked up the horse and cart and
- 15:30Speaker 4: when you know, over the dirt road to the nearest
- 15:32Speaker 4: railway siding, and there was a little like a corner
- 15:37Speaker 4: store there and they could you know, we got you'd
- 15:40Speaker 4: get a bag like what these days would be a
- 15:43Speaker 4: fifty kilo bag of sugar and won aflower and everything else.
- 15:47Speaker 4: You were self sufficient. So horse and cart until I
- 15:50Speaker 4: was probably seven. Then a four D a Model ford A.
- 15:55Speaker 4: There were seven kids, and so no seat belts, no
- 15:57Speaker 4: baby seats, no nothing, no dirt roads. Four day and
- 16:01Speaker 4: then we got wow an FX hold them but the.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Four for seven kids.
- 16:09Speaker 4: So the four day Dad painted British racing green with
- 16:15Speaker 4: a fly spray.
- 16:17Speaker 2: It was.
- 16:17Speaker 4: They had a cylinder and a pump thing filled it
- 16:20Speaker 4: up with paint and he painted unbelievable the car with
- 16:23Speaker 4: the fly spray. I mean, it's a different era.
- 16:26Speaker 3: Yeah. I was going to say, if you look at
- 16:27Speaker 3: that today and you said to a kid that you
- 16:29Speaker 3: would have a horse and a car and a car
- 16:31Speaker 3: to share between seven, they'd be like, oh, now where's
- 16:33Speaker 3: my iPad?
- 16:34Speaker 1: Yeah, going to Sovereign Hill, let's see it.
- 16:37Speaker 2: That's just crazy, isn't it. Yeah.
- 16:39Speaker 4: So immediately following the war, there was no building materials around,
- 16:42Speaker 4: so it was an asbestos house. So the external walls
- 16:46Speaker 4: were there and the inside the house, the frame was
- 16:48Speaker 4: but the only room inside the house that had a
- 16:51Speaker 4: solid wall was mom and Dad's bedroom, which enabled them
- 16:54Speaker 4: to produce eight kids.
- 16:55Speaker 1: I was going to say that that explains all the siblings.
- 16:58Speaker 1: Did You did come from quite a big family. Yeah.
- 17:00Speaker 4: Back then there was nothing to stop you. There was
- 17:02Speaker 4: no pills, there was no TV. It was just the
- 17:05Speaker 4: way it was.
- 17:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:07Speaker 1: So what was your childhood like? Schooling and stuff like that.
- 17:09Speaker 1: It was quite humble, quite simple.
- 17:12Speaker 4: One teacher school they needed the local district was the
- 17:16Speaker 4: school was in the church and they had to have
- 17:18Speaker 4: twelve kids to keep the church the school open. So
- 17:22Speaker 4: the year I was a year younger than was born
- 17:25Speaker 4: in January, so I was twelve months younger than I
- 17:27Speaker 4: should have been to start school, but I was the
- 17:28Speaker 4: nearest in age, so they scoured the district. They asked
- 17:32Speaker 4: if I could start school year early, which I did.
- 17:34Speaker 4: I loved and that meant the school could stay open.
- 17:37Speaker 4: So went to school bear footage, you know. Had The
- 17:41Speaker 4: only books we had were school readers. Occasionally you were
- 17:45Speaker 4: allowed if you were good, you were allowed to take
- 17:47Speaker 4: a reader home. No music. Mom and Dad had to
- 17:50Speaker 4: widen up grammar phone with two records, golden wedding and
- 17:53Speaker 4: mandolin boogie. That was the only music. So it was idyllic.
- 18:03Speaker 4: No drugs, no alcohol, no pedophiles. You know, you could
- 18:07Speaker 4: just go outside and play when the sun come up,
- 18:09Speaker 4: and come in at night when you wanted to be fed.
- 18:11Speaker 4: So it was simple, idyllic. I wouldn't have you know,
- 18:17Speaker 4: if I look back over it all now, wouldn't change
- 18:19Speaker 4: a thing.
- 18:19Speaker 3: Really, your life has become complicated, hasn't it. Australia is
- 18:23Speaker 3: a very different place now.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Completely and absolutely totally different. So some years ago, while
- 18:28Speaker 4: Peter was still alive, we we're in West Ustratia and
- 18:31Speaker 4: I took him and the kids up to have a
- 18:34Speaker 4: look at the old place. And what seemed to be
- 18:37Speaker 4: a humong assistance to us as kids because we'd have
- 18:39Speaker 4: to walk and Dad were very clever. Come Sunday morning,
- 18:44Speaker 4: us kids that were old enough would walk into Sunday
- 18:46Speaker 4: school and that would take a couple of hours to
- 18:49Speaker 4: walk each way. So a couple of hours to walk
- 18:52Speaker 4: Sunday school, a couple of hours to walk home, time
- 18:54Speaker 4: for mom and dad to produce another crop spin.
- 19:00Speaker 1: It's always something about parents on a Sunday is My
- 19:03Speaker 1: parents always said don't open the door. We're watching the news.
- 19:06Speaker 1: I was like, why does Peter hitchint it sound like
- 19:08Speaker 1: he's moving furniture? Yeah? And what sort of kid were
- 19:15Speaker 1: you were you? Did you sort of gravitate to the
- 19:17Speaker 1: books or sports or both?
- 19:20Speaker 4: Was I was somewhat of a difference in our family
- 19:23Speaker 4: have seven kids, and I was one born after the war.
- 19:26Speaker 4: I had two born before and then they came very
- 19:29Speaker 4: rapidly after me. But I loved school. It got me
- 19:34Speaker 4: away from my brothers. Let me tell you. It was
- 19:39Speaker 4: very much a gender based communities at that time. So
- 19:43Speaker 4: Christmas at Sunday School, the prize for past the parcels
- 19:49Speaker 4: was considered that a girl couldn't pass the parcel quick
- 19:52Speaker 4: enough to get the price. So it was a boys car,
- 19:54Speaker 4: a little toy car, which I won. And my brothers
- 19:58Speaker 4: didn't have We didn't have talk so that we know
- 20:01Speaker 4: where you had nothing, So obviously I had to give
- 20:03Speaker 4: them the car. The next year they learned their lesson.
- 20:07Speaker 4: They had a doll and I won the doll. So
- 20:11Speaker 4: I got the doll home and three days later. You know,
- 20:14Speaker 4: I wasn't particularly enamored by the doll because I'd never
- 20:17Speaker 4: seen dolls. I was wondering where the doll's gone, and
- 20:20Speaker 4: one of the brothers said, up the wood heap. So
- 20:25Speaker 4: went up there, and they'd cut its head off with
- 20:26Speaker 4: the exit.
- 20:28Speaker 1: My god, oh my god, they didn't. Yeah, that's last
- 20:32Speaker 1: time you win anything around here.
- 20:36Speaker 4: So I was even though they were, you know, my
- 20:40Speaker 4: one brother thirteen months anger, another one fifteen months younger,
- 20:43Speaker 4: and so it went like that. I really never they were.
- 20:47Speaker 4: We were very different. They hated school. I loved it.
- 20:49Speaker 4: I wouldn't miss school for anything. They pleaded with mum,
- 20:51Speaker 4: dealin and be home. So for me, I was I
- 20:55Speaker 4: loved learning, I loved painting. I love community, sport, you
- 21:02Speaker 4: name it. I played at hockey, basketball, netball, you know,
- 21:05Speaker 4: all of that. Athletics. I had surely stripped and trained
- 21:08Speaker 4: me for a little while in athletics, but nobody ever
- 21:11Speaker 4: said to me I was always top mcclass and that
- 21:14Speaker 4: sort of stuff. Not that we thought anything of it,
- 21:17Speaker 4: but nobody ever said to me that girls don't do that.
- 21:20Speaker 4: Girls don't do it. It was a time when girls
- 21:23Speaker 4: did commercial so they became you know, secretaries, worked in
- 21:31Speaker 4: the bank or teachers, you know, other than that. And
- 21:36Speaker 4: at that stage, if you got married, you couldn't teach it.
- 21:41Speaker 4: It's a female. Anyhow, it was a different I taught
- 21:47Speaker 4: started teaching in a country town in Weststralia called Beverly.
- 21:51Speaker 1: You're the mayor, Yeah, absolutely so.
- 21:53Speaker 4: The quite a reasonable indigenous community there that lived in
- 21:58Speaker 4: a reserve. So you know, I got to have that experience,
- 22:03Speaker 4: which was good. I was a science teacher. Nobody ever
- 22:07Speaker 4: said to me that women don't do teach science. Nobody
- 22:11Speaker 4: ever said to me that women don't do anything. I
- 22:13Speaker 4: was never discouraged, but I was never encouraged. Had I
- 22:17Speaker 4: not got a scholarship, I couldn't. I was the only
- 22:18Speaker 4: one in our family to finish school. But had I
- 22:21Speaker 4: not got a scholarship, I couldn't have happened. So yeah,
- 22:26Speaker 4: a fantastic, simple, uncomplicated life that just breezed through.
- 22:31Speaker 3: When did you go from there to the big smoke smaker.
- 22:36Speaker 4: Well, I taught because I'd got a scholarship and they
- 22:39Speaker 4: needed teachers. Then you had to agree. If you accepted
- 22:42Speaker 4: the scholarship, you had to teach for three years. So
- 22:45Speaker 4: in those three years I taught in a number of
- 22:49Speaker 4: country schools, country high schools. I met. I met this
- 22:57Speaker 4: Robert True Redford look alike and Phil Madly and that,
- 23:00Speaker 4: and eloped from West Australia to Sydney. My mum wanted
- 23:06Speaker 4: me to have the wedding in the big cathoed because
- 23:08Speaker 4: I was the one, the only one to finished school.
- 23:11Speaker 4: I was the one that, you know, Mum could glow about.
- 23:15Speaker 4: So it was it meant Mum was one of seven
- 23:18Speaker 4: children and they all had seven kids, and I was
- 23:20Speaker 4: going to have to pay for this wedding that was
- 23:22Speaker 4: going to be a squillion rellos that I didn't know
- 23:27Speaker 4: the town by the sound of it, So I said
- 23:29Speaker 4: Mum and Dad in the backyard a couple of friends.
- 23:31Speaker 4: Mum freak took to a bed Yama's got the vapors darling.
- 23:35Speaker 4: So I eloped and ended up in Sydney.
- 23:39Speaker 1: And when did you live in Sydney?
- 23:41Speaker 4: Well, the guy I married had come from there originally,
- 23:45Speaker 4: so his family was still in Sydney. Went back there,
- 23:49Speaker 4: married in a registry office and taught in a boys
- 23:54Speaker 4: high school in Sydney for seven years. But my then
- 23:59Speaker 4: husband's best it was Peter Mechanic. So Peter is at
- 24:02Speaker 4: the beginning of his career, had no money. So when
- 24:05Speaker 4: they came to race in Sydney. They came and stayed
- 24:07Speaker 4: with us, so free accommodation, free meals I cooked. My
- 24:10Speaker 4: then husband was a mechanic. We had a service station,
- 24:14Speaker 4: so he helped on the racetrack. So it started by
- 24:18Speaker 4: going along, as you know, the general dog's body to
- 24:21Speaker 4: do all the timing, cleaning, keep the girls away when
- 24:26Speaker 4: it was time to focus on the races, sor ry bevo,
- 24:29Speaker 4: it's time. Just move them out of the way, please,
- 24:31Speaker 4: So I knew what I was getting into when cars,
- 24:38Speaker 4: Let's put it this way. The first car I bought,
- 24:41Speaker 4: God was a Courtina, and it was immaculate, little Courtina.
- 24:47Speaker 4: But I find out after I've bought it that it
- 24:49Speaker 4: is a lemon, and it's got a mind of its own,
- 24:51Speaker 4: and it does what it wants when it wants, whether
- 24:53Speaker 4: you like it or not. So I had a mishap
- 24:57Speaker 4: and got it fixed and would lend that car to
- 25:00Speaker 4: anybody who wanted to borrow. So I didn't drive it
- 25:02Speaker 4: very much. When I went to Sydney and I needed
- 25:08Speaker 4: a car of my own, I bought a little dats
- 25:12Speaker 4: In one twenty.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Y but beautiful. That's a great car.
- 25:16Speaker 4: Fantastic, except back then women couldn't sign a contract. Are
- 25:21Speaker 4: you serious? Absolutely? So the dealer, I said, you'll have
- 25:25Speaker 4: to bring your husband in. Oh my god, and signed
- 25:28Speaker 4: the contract and I said, I beg your pardon. I said,
- 25:30Speaker 4: I have a regular job. I go day by day,
- 25:32Speaker 4: I go everything. I get a paycheck. He can go
- 25:35Speaker 4: out for the night, and said he'll be home early.
- 25:37Speaker 4: I might not seem for two months. Do you want
- 25:38Speaker 4: him to come in and sign the contract? And he
- 25:41Speaker 4: looked at me and he said, well, we reconsider. You
- 25:44Speaker 4: can sign the contract.
- 25:45Speaker 2: I love that. That is great.
- 25:46Speaker 1: That's the most wild thing I've heard though. I like
- 25:49Speaker 1: it was that just like a New South Wales Laura.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Was that an Australian law?
- 25:52Speaker 4: I whod no? Why bothered to check?
- 25:54Speaker 1: Yes?
- 25:55Speaker 4: Yes, it was insanity. I mean segregation was in you know,
- 26:00Speaker 4: why would you check on stuff? Because it was such
- 26:01Speaker 4: a crazy broll. It was just a thing right, just
- 26:04Speaker 4: the way it was, and you managed, you got on
- 26:06Speaker 4: with it. And then the marriage fell apart and I
- 26:12Speaker 4: ended up Melbourne.
- 26:14Speaker 1: So it was good and somewhere between there and sorry
- 26:18Speaker 1: the marriage. So I'm trying to backtrack a little bit.
- 26:21Speaker 1: Around about the age of twenty two, you had a
- 26:22Speaker 1: big accident with your neck right, Yep, that was quite severe.
- 26:26Speaker 4: Absolutely. I was teaching in this country town, not Beverly,
- 26:29Speaker 4: another country town north of Perth. And they by this
- 26:34Speaker 4: stage the government had built to houses. Well, they were
- 26:39Speaker 4: duplexus close so the guys had one single guys one
- 26:42Speaker 4: side and the single girls the other. So I had
- 26:44Speaker 4: I had moved out of this derelictome that when before
- 26:48Speaker 4: into this nice new place with two girls. And we
- 26:51Speaker 4: were one hundred and eighty mile from Perth, so there
- 26:58Speaker 4: was a tendency to develop relationship within the township. So
- 27:02Speaker 4: one of the girls had accepted a date with a farmer.
- 27:06Speaker 4: Back then no mobile phone, so he came from a
- 27:08Speaker 4: farm a long way out. It was for a Sunday
- 27:11Speaker 4: to go water skiing with him and his mates. And
- 27:14Speaker 4: then she finds out her boyfriend's coming up from the city.
- 27:17Speaker 4: Help I need rescue? Will you go in my place?
- 27:23Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 27:23Speaker 4: Find So I was going out with a guy who
- 27:26Speaker 4: had already left the farm. You couldn't get in touch
- 27:28Speaker 4: with him to come in and pick her up, which
- 27:30Speaker 4: was going to be me. I don't know his name.
- 27:32Speaker 4: I never knew his name. I wouldn't never have recognized
- 27:34Speaker 4: so anyway, he comes. When he gets here, he finds
- 27:37Speaker 4: out he's taking me and not her because she's gone
- 27:40Speaker 4: off with a boyfriend. So we get and it's a
- 27:42Speaker 4: freshwater lake. Enie Abba. So out there at this freshwater
- 27:47Speaker 4: lake that water skiing. Never water skied before. I ended
- 27:51Speaker 4: up diving in head first, hit at the top of
- 27:53Speaker 4: my head on a submerged standbank and knew I was
- 27:56Speaker 4: in trouble. So the boat stopped to pick me up,
- 27:58Speaker 4: but the movement of the boat painful, so they stopped
- 28:01Speaker 4: and put me on the shore and I walked around
- 28:03Speaker 4: the shore back to where the all his friends were sitting,
- 28:07Speaker 4: and one of the guys there said, look, you've hurt
- 28:10Speaker 4: your nick. He said, look, I'll ring a friend of
- 28:11Speaker 4: mine in Geralton who's a chiropractor, and I'll drive you there,
- 28:15Speaker 4: which is another hour and a half's drive to there.
- 28:19Speaker 4: So I've got to get in the car. You don't
- 28:21Speaker 4: realize that you how much you use your head as
- 28:25Speaker 4: balanced So even sitting down, getting up, getting in and
- 28:28Speaker 4: out of a car, and it was over dirt roads,
- 28:31Speaker 4: sand dunes, and he drives me to Geralton. The chiropractor
- 28:38Speaker 4: comes in Caesars, looks at me and she said, sweetheart,
- 28:41Speaker 4: she said, it's a bit swollen. Why don't you come
- 28:43Speaker 4: back and see me on Tuesday and I'll put it
- 28:44Speaker 4: back in.
- 28:45Speaker 3: Then.
- 28:45Speaker 4: Oh my, had she touched me, I would have been dead.
- 28:48Speaker 4: So back in the car, drive back to where I
- 28:51Speaker 4: was teaching. But this stage ten thirty at night and
- 28:55Speaker 4: the boyfriend is ready to go back to the city.
- 28:57Speaker 4: He said, why don't you come. I'll drive you back
- 28:59Speaker 4: down to perth off at your place and you can
- 29:01Speaker 4: see your own doctor tomorrow. So back to the city.
- 29:04Speaker 4: One thirty in the morning. I'm out of the cargo.
- 29:06Speaker 4: Mum and dad are in bed. I go get myself
- 29:09Speaker 4: into bed. Next morning, I've crawled out there there shock.
- 29:13Speaker 4: Call my doctor, meet me at the hospital. So I
- 29:16Speaker 4: meet him at the hospital. They do an X ray.
- 29:18Speaker 4: Next thing, They've got sandbags all around me. I've got
- 29:21Speaker 4: compression practice on three and four in my neck. So
- 29:26Speaker 4: into hospital I have to be on what do they
- 29:29Speaker 4: call it when they hang you by your chin in bed.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Like with a yeah?
- 29:34Speaker 4: So yeah. I was above head height of anybody walking
- 29:41Speaker 4: in the room, so I couldn't see them. So I
- 29:43Speaker 4: was in trouble. And I find out because I'd come
- 29:47Speaker 4: from the middle of nowhere. We had no doctors, we
- 29:48Speaker 4: didn't have dnners. I've never had injections, so I suddenly
- 29:52Speaker 4: find out I'm allergic. They in the night. I could
- 29:55Speaker 4: control the pain in the day, but when I was
- 29:57Speaker 4: supposed to be asleep they gave me something to sleep,
- 30:00Speaker 4: I had no control. I'd scream the hospital down. The
- 30:02Speaker 4: next morning, they said, well, we can't inflict you on
- 30:03Speaker 4: any other patients, so we're going to take you out
- 30:06Speaker 4: of traction and we're going to put you in plaster.
- 30:09Speaker 4: So they stretched me and I was in plaster from
- 30:11Speaker 4: the top of my head. Half MI nerve my shoulders
- 30:14Speaker 4: out to hear. I was in this plaster cast like this,
- 30:18Speaker 4: And I said, look pointless me staying in hospital. Nothing
- 30:21Speaker 4: can happen to me now. So I called a friend
- 30:24Speaker 4: who was going to pick me up and take me
- 30:26Speaker 4: down south to his parents' farm. And I could hide
- 30:29Speaker 4: because I looked like the mitcheller man. I was just
- 30:32Speaker 4: so he comes, He's take him a while to get this.
- 30:35Speaker 4: So I go for a walk around the hospital ground
- 30:37Speaker 4: and I get a mosquito in my ear. Have you
- 30:40Speaker 4: ever had an insect in your ear? When they when
- 30:45Speaker 4: they pummel on your ear drum. It's like a jackhammer
- 30:47Speaker 4: in your brain. So I've gone back into the hospital
- 30:50Speaker 4: and to get it out, they've had to lift me
- 30:53Speaker 4: up and lay me over poor warm oil in my
- 30:55Speaker 4: ear to drown. And while they're doing this, I said, look,
- 31:00Speaker 4: only thing you can hap to me Now I get
- 31:01Speaker 4: hit by a truck. You got to watch what you say.
- 31:04Speaker 4: So my friend Arise picks me up. We're in his car,
- 31:06Speaker 4: drive out of the gate onto the hospital into the
- 31:08Speaker 4: main road. In the back, what ridiculous. I'm already in plaster,
- 31:16Speaker 4: so I can't no whip lab So I ended up.
- 31:20Speaker 2: You're probably lucky year already plaster. I was.
- 31:24Speaker 4: So went downstate and his parents farm until the plaster
- 31:27Speaker 4: was to come off, and then they they use a
- 31:31Speaker 4: saw to cut across your throat. You hear anyway the
- 31:34Speaker 4: plaster came off, I was in one of those screw
- 31:36Speaker 4: up collars for went back to school teaching.
- 31:40Speaker 1: And can I ask at that point, what what was
- 31:42Speaker 1: the outlook from the doctors.
- 31:45Speaker 4: I was going to spend my life in a wheelchair.
- 31:47Speaker 4: I'd never be able to have kids, I'd never play
- 31:48Speaker 4: sport again, I'd never I never never did stuff you
- 31:51Speaker 4: so they took the collar off. I played a full
- 31:54Speaker 4: game of basketball that night, and I didn't take a break. Sort,
- 31:57Speaker 4: if I'm going to die, I'm going to die doing
- 31:58Speaker 4: something I warrant.
- 31:59Speaker 1: I'm going to make this shot.
- 32:01Speaker 4: Absolutely. I went water skiing again. I did all those things.
- 32:04Speaker 4: I did have troubles. When I was teaching in Sydney.
- 32:07Speaker 4: I had to go back into a collar because I
- 32:09Speaker 4: was losing the use of arms. I couldn't lift my
- 32:11Speaker 4: arms right on the blackboard. So back in a collar,
- 32:15Speaker 4: and they wanted to operate and cut the bones out
- 32:18Speaker 4: and put a rod through. I wasn't keen on that.
- 32:22Speaker 4: I met an old bloke who said he was a
- 32:24Speaker 4: healer and asked me to give him three weeks and
- 32:27Speaker 4: he would work with me. So at that point in time,
- 32:31Speaker 4: because I knew if I had a rod there, eventually
- 32:32Speaker 4: I'd have a rod right through my old spine. So
- 32:35Speaker 4: three weeks he threw me over his shoulder, stretched me
- 32:38Speaker 4: a little. That I got the use of arms back
- 32:39Speaker 4: and I never to have the operation.
- 32:42Speaker 1: Wow, and did that sort of a thing, I mean,
- 32:44Speaker 1: that sort of event in someone's life. Surely that would
- 32:48Speaker 1: play a part in I guess the outlook you'd have.
- 32:50Speaker 4: In Because from that moment when the doctor said all
- 32:54Speaker 4: the things I wouldn't do, I thought, he's not in
- 32:57Speaker 4: my body. He's had no idea what I'm doing. So
- 33:01Speaker 4: from that moment on health became the focal point. I'd
- 33:04Speaker 4: taken all for grant, as you do, young people, you do.
- 33:07Speaker 4: But suddenly health was it. So diet, you know, I'd
- 33:10Speaker 4: studied nutrition, I was, you know, done all that. I
- 33:14Speaker 4: didn't drink, I didn't smoke, I didn't inhale anything. I
- 33:16Speaker 4: didn't you know, I ate a healthy you know, nutrition,
- 33:20Speaker 4: So total focus on health and well being. I did
- 33:24Speaker 4: start to have trouble a bit later, and I took
- 33:27Speaker 4: up regular chiropractic care, so, you know, it just it
- 33:31Speaker 4: changed me my attitude to life completely because you realize
- 33:36Speaker 4: if you don't have your health, everything else in life
- 33:38Speaker 4: becomes problematic.
- 33:39Speaker 3: But do you think that's where that came from? Because
- 33:41Speaker 3: you sound like a fairly tenacious person. You're not going
- 33:44Speaker 3: to take no for an answer. Do you think that
- 33:45Speaker 3: was part of that whole sort of mentality.
- 33:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I think I was like that before. I don't
- 33:51Speaker 4: know why. As I say, I was completely different from
- 33:53Speaker 4: anybody else in the family. I don't know where I
- 33:55Speaker 4: got that from, but I wasn't going to allow anybody
- 33:58Speaker 4: to stop me from doing what I wanted to do.
- 34:00Speaker 3: So just but that's a great mentality to have, especially
- 34:03Speaker 3: for a female, and back then, because a lot of
- 34:05Speaker 3: people will listen to others telling them no, no, you
- 34:08Speaker 3: can't do that. That's not possible, because this, this and this.
- 34:11Speaker 3: It's like, no, no, that's not right. You've got to
- 34:13Speaker 3: set your mind to something and you can do it exactly.
- 34:16Speaker 4: It's interesting because I had wanted initially to study medicine,
- 34:21Speaker 4: but because of my scholarship, I had to do teaching.
- 34:24Speaker 4: So for me having research, you know, I studied science
- 34:30Speaker 4: or science subjects except geology. I had to learn before
- 34:33Speaker 4: I talked that one.
- 34:35Speaker 2: So it.
- 34:38Speaker 4: Gave me an approach to life that life is what
- 34:41Speaker 4: you make it. And so all the public speaking i've
- 34:43Speaker 4: done since then, his life is what you make it,
- 34:46Speaker 4: and with a focus on health and then the choices
- 34:48Speaker 4: you make. So it's back then there were no books,
- 34:52Speaker 4: there were no people who had those philosophies, so nobody
- 34:55Speaker 4: I could talk to. I was alone wolf in those things.
- 34:59Speaker 4: But it just it's just the way it was that's
- 35:02Speaker 4: so interesting. Interesting.
- 35:03Speaker 3: Yeah, I just find that fascinating because that's the thing
- 35:06Speaker 3: that I find with a lot of people. They will
- 35:08Speaker 3: just stop doing something because they're told they can't or
- 35:10Speaker 3: they shouldn't, and it's like, well, it's entirely up to you.
- 35:12Speaker 2: You can do whatever you want.
- 35:14Speaker 4: But growing up where I did, we didn't have doctors,
- 35:16Speaker 4: we didn't have dentists, we had none of the things.
- 35:18Speaker 4: We had no community as such. So you know, you
- 35:21Speaker 4: just you did what you did or else there was
- 35:25Speaker 4: nobody They're going to hand it your life on a platter.
- 35:27Speaker 3: You just Today, that's a different story, so many opportunities,
- 35:31Speaker 3: and they still don't grasp them, you know what I mean,
- 35:32Speaker 3: They still let stuff go. And it's like today it's
- 35:35Speaker 3: like so different to what have beaten would be.
- 35:36Speaker 4: Like that, completely and absolutely different nobody, you know. Since
- 35:41Speaker 4: I've been on the board of an education found out
- 35:43Speaker 4: in Melbourne since two thousand and six, and we take
- 35:48Speaker 4: what we call challenge disadvantage kids and who are exceptionally
- 35:55Speaker 4: who are gifted, and put them through year eleven and
- 35:57Speaker 4: twelve and then mentor them through unique So the fact
- 36:01Speaker 4: that I could relate totally to these kids It's made
- 36:04Speaker 4: that an absolute dream because I value education. I know
- 36:09Speaker 4: what a difference it can make, and kids who are
- 36:11Speaker 4: really bright, who don't have at network and don't have
- 36:14Speaker 4: the finances should not miss out online because so that
- 36:19Speaker 4: experience as a child taught me a great deal that
- 36:23Speaker 4: I've been been able to apply a lot through life.
- 36:25Speaker 3: So I know it's a bit of a sidestep here,
- 36:27Speaker 3: but what do you reckon these days? You're hearing a
- 36:30Speaker 3: lot about kids as young as eleven twelve stealing cars
- 36:33Speaker 3: and being like bags.
- 36:35Speaker 2: What is the solution to that?
- 36:36Speaker 3: Because I don't know if it's social media that propagates
- 36:38Speaker 3: this stuff, but what is the solution to these kids
- 36:41Speaker 3: who just seem to be running?
- 36:42Speaker 4: Mark Well, Peter and I were both very grateful for
- 36:47Speaker 4: the upbringing we've had and the fact that we were
- 36:49Speaker 4: now in the position where we actually had the means
- 36:52Speaker 4: to help people. So before we set up the foundation
- 36:55Speaker 4: at home and good to you. You remember, but there
- 36:59Speaker 4: was always a lot of people in our house. So
- 37:02Speaker 4: my kids didn't bring home wounded animals. They brought home wounded.
- 37:05Speaker 1: Kids from all walks of life, all of these nationality, nothing,
- 37:13Speaker 1: it didn't matter.
- 37:14Speaker 4: So we always had extra kids in the home, and
- 37:18Speaker 4: I'd run I ran retreats for women, one hundred women
- 37:21Speaker 4: at a time, once a year. So that was about,
- 37:24Speaker 4: you know, life is what you make it. So that
- 37:26Speaker 4: was fine for women. And Peter said to me, Bevo,
- 37:29Speaker 4: you've got to do something for guys as well. I said, okay,
- 37:33Speaker 4: as long as you're going to be there, because it's
- 37:34Speaker 4: going to be more relevant. So we sort of would
- 37:38Speaker 4: have the occasional residential but the guys weren't really keen
- 37:42Speaker 4: staying for the weekend. Women were. They were fine. So
- 37:46Speaker 4: we had our kids would have a particular group of friends,
- 37:51Speaker 4: and a lot of them were in that troubled variety.
- 37:54Speaker 4: So we'd bring them home for the weekend and we'd
- 37:56Speaker 4: have a great weekend and we'd all these motivational talk
- 37:58Speaker 4: and everything, and they'd be fantast stick and they have changed,
- 38:01Speaker 4: and they go home, and a couple of weeks later
- 38:03Speaker 4: they come back and they're back in squareway. And so
- 38:06Speaker 4: we looked at this is absolutely a waste of time.
- 38:09Speaker 4: We've got to get the parents before. If you get
- 38:12Speaker 4: the parents with the right approach, then the kids are
- 38:16Speaker 4: going to be raised in the right environment. They're going
- 38:18Speaker 4: to be fine. So we swapped it around from just
- 38:21Speaker 4: having the kids and brought the parents in. They worked
- 38:24Speaker 4: with them, and that's when I found that it made
- 38:27Speaker 4: an enormous difference. So for me, looking at the kids,
- 38:31Speaker 4: these young kids today and having grandkids at age, I
- 38:35Speaker 4: look at my grandkids, there's no way known that they
- 38:37Speaker 4: would even contemplate stuff like that. So I look at
- 38:41Speaker 4: them and I look back on what we did, and
- 38:44Speaker 4: I know that the most important role any of us
- 38:48Speaker 4: have in life is to have children and raise them.
- 38:50Speaker 4: We're raising our next leaders, our next generation of leaders,
- 38:54Speaker 4: and if they're not raised in an appropriate fashion, we're
- 38:57Speaker 4: going to dip out. So for us, it was intant
- 39:00Speaker 4: to get the kids instilled with a good solid basis
- 39:04Speaker 4: so that that sort of stuff didn't happen. It had
- 39:08Speaker 4: we had mixed. For our eldest, he tried, he wasn't
- 39:13Speaker 4: interested in the start. We had to plead with him
- 39:16Speaker 4: to get involved with these kids. And when he did,
- 39:21Speaker 4: he came home one day and said, I'm leaving school,
- 39:24Speaker 4: and I said what, Because he was exceptionally bright. I've worked,
- 39:29Speaker 4: I had, I worked with a post grade work at
- 39:32Speaker 4: Union in special ed gifted kids. So I knew he
- 39:36Speaker 4: was bright, and God, you're not leaving school unless you've
- 39:39Speaker 4: got a job, So you got to watch what you
- 39:42Speaker 4: say as a parent. He goes to school on Monday,
- 39:45Speaker 4: he comes home and he said, I've got these three jobs. Mum,
- 39:47Speaker 4: I'm taking that one. I start next week.
- 39:50Speaker 1: How old is he at this point, well, he.
- 39:53Speaker 4: Was year eleven. So he picked a job which I
- 40:00Speaker 4: was stunned in. It was with our race team, and
- 40:03Speaker 4: he had not Our kids didn't particularly enjoy going to
- 40:06Speaker 4: the races because for Peter it was always the fans.
- 40:09Speaker 4: The kids had to wait until they'd finished signing, and
- 40:12Speaker 4: then he'd take them home and they'd be starving and
- 40:14Speaker 4: over it, so they didn't go very often. But Jamie
- 40:17Speaker 4: started with the race team and we at the time
- 40:20Speaker 4: had two guys who'd just come out of Formula one
- 40:24Speaker 4: and I used to go in and food and do stuff.
- 40:28Speaker 4: And I went in one day a couple of weeks
- 40:30Speaker 4: after Jamie started, and they took me aside, these two
- 40:32Speaker 4: guys and the said, do you realize what you've got here?
- 40:33Speaker 4: And I said, what are your man? They said, do
- 40:35Speaker 4: you realize how capable your son is? Said? Do you
- 40:40Speaker 4: understand he's been here a couple of weeks. He can
- 40:42Speaker 4: do things that we could not do in Formula one.
- 40:46Speaker 4: So he stayed there for a little bit, but then
- 40:48Speaker 4: he started his own business. He built a replica of
- 40:51Speaker 4: Peter's first race card without seeing it, without anything, and
- 40:56Speaker 4: Peter had go in there and look. He said, this
- 40:58Speaker 4: is so much better than one because Pleader would do
- 41:02Speaker 4: everything by eye and feel, whereas Jamie's meticulous. You know,
- 41:06Speaker 4: everything's just perfect, so it you know, I looked at
- 41:11Speaker 4: here's this kid with this attitude to work, determination, perfectionist,
- 41:16Speaker 4: all of that sort of stuff. So he tried to
- 41:18Speaker 4: get some of his mates who had been coming to
- 41:23Speaker 4: get them jobs and they'd never even turn up. And
- 41:25Speaker 4: he was so mortified that he just walked away from
- 41:29Speaker 4: all of that. And so our kids, even though they
- 41:33Speaker 4: grew up in the household, which where we always had
- 41:36Speaker 4: extra kids, there's no way our kids are going to
- 41:38Speaker 4: do it because they had to share their people. They
- 41:40Speaker 4: were already had to share their dad, they had to
- 41:42Speaker 4: share their mum and their home. So it changed attitudes
- 41:47Speaker 4: more than you can begin to think.
- 41:49Speaker 2: So, yeah, that's really interesting.
- 41:52Speaker 4: In the midst of that, Bridgestone, our favorite sponsor at
- 41:56Speaker 4: the time had an AD. You remember this cording had
- 42:00Speaker 4: an AD for tires.
- 42:02Speaker 1: Is this the one with the gecko?
- 42:04Speaker 4: Yeah, but it's before the gecko. The gecko came in
- 42:06Speaker 4: just after that. So I was Peter and I were
- 42:10Speaker 4: to be they brought in the new Supercat tires. So
- 42:14Speaker 4: we were doing to be in a comparison on a
- 42:18Speaker 4: disused airport up in Sydney, and Peter was going to
- 42:22Speaker 4: be so embarrassed because I was a pathetic driver, so
- 42:26Speaker 4: it didn't show up on the AD. He took me
- 42:28Speaker 4: down the paddic set up which his hats taught me
- 42:30Speaker 4: how to drive ring, did a couple of runs. That's fine, right,
- 42:34Speaker 4: just so I didn't embarrass it. So we get up
- 42:37Speaker 4: to Sydney the AD. I'm in the car with the
- 42:40Speaker 4: old tile, Peter's in the car with the new super Cats.
- 42:43Speaker 4: We do a thing, slam on the brake stop and
- 42:45Speaker 4: he cleans me up by country mile because he's got
- 42:48Speaker 4: the good tires. So they swapped cars. I beat it
- 42:54Speaker 4: and he looked. He said, Bevo, how good are those tires?
- 43:00Speaker 4: And they were. And for me to have that before
- 43:03Speaker 4: and after and understand how important tires were in stopping
- 43:07Speaker 4: and maneuvering Gordy came. Yes, Gordy didn't have good times
- 43:12Speaker 4: on his car. My daughter was not going to be
- 43:14Speaker 4: allowed in there had good tires, so he got a
- 43:17Speaker 4: brand new set of Quod ties.
- 43:18Speaker 1: I love that was very embarrassed. I will get to
- 43:22Speaker 1: that story in a second second, but I did want
- 43:25Speaker 1: to sort of roughly go back to let's let's go
- 43:28Speaker 1: to say it was the seventies at this point, and
- 43:31Speaker 1: I'm guessing when did you meet Peter? Was it around
- 43:34Speaker 1: sort of the early seventies? Yes, yes, because I mean
- 43:38Speaker 1: to me that that was the era I wish I
- 43:40Speaker 1: was born in. I just think it's it's brilliant. It
- 43:43Speaker 1: was you can wear footy shorts for no particular reason,
- 43:46Speaker 1: partner cigarettes on the bottom of you know, dashboard of
- 43:50Speaker 1: your car. It was just Sonny's on It was. The
- 43:53Speaker 1: cars were awesome, but it was a real roaring wild time.
- 43:59Speaker 1: What was what what was that time like for you?
- 44:01Speaker 1: When the seventies hit and I guess you met Peter.
- 44:04Speaker 4: It was interesting because I'm this kid from this isolated spot.
- 44:09Speaker 4: I know nothing. I'm naive. I've never dealt with media,
- 44:11Speaker 4: I've never dealt with high profile people. I've never you know,
- 44:13Speaker 4: all this sort of stuff, and you got to I
- 44:16Speaker 4: know you were saying about the footy shorts. Women were
- 44:18Speaker 4: not allowed to wear trousers to work. My science lab
- 44:22Speaker 4: was sort of in the hill and it didn't get
- 44:24Speaker 4: above freezing until eleven o'clock. So I went to the
- 44:26Speaker 4: school principal and said, I want permission to wear trousers
- 44:29Speaker 4: because it's so damn cold, absolutely against the rules. Episode
- 44:33Speaker 4: and he and the deputy principal and as I was
- 44:35Speaker 4: walking out, I'm thinking, oh god, and I heard him say,
- 44:38Speaker 4: besides which, what would we have to look at because
- 44:40Speaker 4: my skirts green? And I tought, mate, you've challenged the
- 44:46Speaker 4: wrong woman. So the next day I wore slacks long trousers.
- 44:50Speaker 4: There's only six other females teaching in the school, and
- 44:54Speaker 4: within a week they.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Were all wearing trousers.
- 44:56Speaker 4: But anyhow, how did I find that? It was great?
- 44:59Speaker 4: It was raw amazing. I then got to see I'd
- 45:04Speaker 4: seen a little bit of motor racing in West Australia,
- 45:06Speaker 4: but with Peter we'd go out to the track all
- 45:09Speaker 4: the time. I was sort of learning to drive, but
- 45:13Speaker 4: then you know, this is the big boys go, and
- 45:17Speaker 4: I wasn't really all that interested in driving. Yeah, the cars,
- 45:22Speaker 4: all of that sort of stuff. I was around the
- 45:23Speaker 4: cars because we had a service station we were the
- 45:26Speaker 4: racing was there. When Peter wanted assistance, he'd get my
- 45:32Speaker 4: then husband to fly down and join him, so I
- 45:34Speaker 4: would come, because that meant I was doing the cooking
- 45:36Speaker 4: and waiting on them and the dog's breakfast stuff. So
- 45:41Speaker 4: to actually find that I was involved in it, you know,
- 45:46Speaker 4: at that stage, Peter not really started winning. He was
- 45:50Speaker 4: just at the start of all of that. And so
- 45:52Speaker 4: he had one batist and I was at school. I'd
- 45:55Speaker 4: been up there on the week. I was at school.
- 45:56Speaker 4: On the Monday, I organized for him on his way
- 45:58Speaker 4: home back to Melbourne to drive past and stop at
- 46:02Speaker 4: the school. And you can imagine a boys high school
- 46:05Speaker 4: and he's just got it, just one Bathurst. He gets
- 46:07Speaker 4: up there and he's up on the stage and there's
- 46:09Speaker 4: this you know, these all these young men just in
- 46:13Speaker 4: and the principle said to me afterwards, do you think
- 46:15Speaker 4: you can teach us to talk like that? We don't
- 46:17Speaker 4: get that reaction when we're talking. So I got at
- 46:23Speaker 4: that point in time, I got to experience good cars,
- 46:27Speaker 4: really good cars, which I got to drive sometimes. Sometimes
- 46:30Speaker 4: I had them at school and would take the kids
- 46:33Speaker 4: when I because I coached the basketball team, and I
- 46:36Speaker 4: take a couple of the players in the car. They
- 46:39Speaker 4: just think it was fantastic, absolutely fantastic.
- 46:42Speaker 1: They loved it watching the old bath hest footage and
- 46:45Speaker 1: things like that, especially in the early seventies. Just things
- 46:48Speaker 1: like the pit lane, stuff like it was such a while.
- 46:51Speaker 1: Like the way they would fill up a car would
- 46:53Speaker 1: almost be with a big funnel and a barrel and
- 46:56Speaker 1: pit fires and things like that. It was before sort
- 46:59Speaker 1: of I'm not sure what they call them, but the
- 47:01Speaker 1: valves and stuff that they moved to in the very manual.
- 47:05Speaker 4: Yeah, there was no pit structure as such. There was
- 47:08Speaker 4: a wood encounter. There was a single barbed wife, single
- 47:12Speaker 4: line of barbed wire fencing. That was it. That was
- 47:14Speaker 4: the safety thing over the mountain didn't And Peter actually
- 47:17Speaker 4: used to say it was the council. Let's say they're
- 47:19Speaker 4: bringing in these safety guys and they'd be putting up there.
- 47:21Speaker 4: Peter said, it takes away the challenge. Don't do that.
- 47:24Speaker 4: But of course they had to know a few blokes
- 47:26Speaker 4: lost their lives, so it tends to change things.
- 47:28Speaker 3: But leaving up on the mountain, if you're a spectator,
- 47:31Speaker 3: they were burning cars and doing all sorts of stuff
- 47:34Speaker 3: up there.
- 47:35Speaker 2: That was a time to be alive.
- 47:37Speaker 4: Well, you had to have to get up there. You
- 47:39Speaker 4: had to go up this road and there would be
- 47:41Speaker 4: a group of the guys from up the hill. And
- 47:45Speaker 4: if you had a female in the car and she
- 47:47Speaker 4: lifted a t shirt show them she wears, they would
- 47:50Speaker 4: let that car through it if it only had blokes
- 47:54Speaker 4: in and they'd have to contribute a certain amount of
- 47:56Speaker 4: their slab or they'd have to do a burnout. Trouble
- 47:59Speaker 4: is when they did the burn out, the car hage
- 48:01Speaker 4: slide off and sometimes went through tents where people were sleeping.
- 48:05Speaker 4: But the media protected it all they didn't. All of
- 48:08Speaker 4: that was kept quiet and up the top at the
- 48:11Speaker 4: top where it was drinking it, they brought in the
- 48:13Speaker 4: limit for the amount of alcohol you could have. The
- 48:16Speaker 4: guys weren't stupid, so they would go up there mid
- 48:20Speaker 4: way through the year, digg a trench from their camp
- 48:22Speaker 4: site to the where the power thing was and hook
- 48:25Speaker 4: into the power cover the trench over they'd have under
- 48:29Speaker 4: their tent site. They'd have a big hole and they'd
- 48:30Speaker 4: have a big fridge in there, so it's connected to
- 48:33Speaker 4: the power, and so that they would have this stock
- 48:36Speaker 4: supplying before the police arrived on race week.
- 48:40Speaker 1: This whole thing is my kind of currency. I just like,
- 48:43Speaker 1: do you get your tarana in?
- 48:46Speaker 2: But it's true, the media.
- 48:48Speaker 4: Covered it all.
- 48:49Speaker 1: It never happened.
- 48:50Speaker 4: There were a few people killed, a few people squashed
- 48:52Speaker 4: when the burnouts went a bit of haywire. But but
- 48:56Speaker 4: you know, Peter and I'd go up and because the
- 48:57Speaker 4: guys would be there in their army, great coats, every
- 49:00Speaker 4: badge they could find, and they idolized him. So they
- 49:03Speaker 4: treated always treated me with absolute respect, and they treated
- 49:06Speaker 4: him with respect. But if you were a bit of
- 49:08Speaker 4: a whoon or anything, you had to pass certain tests
- 49:12Speaker 4: before you were a part of a mom to stay there.
- 49:16Speaker 4: It was never dull or boring. Let me tell.
- 49:19Speaker 1: You what do you think it is about the fan
- 49:21Speaker 1: base of I mean not just Peter but motor racing
- 49:24Speaker 1: and cars in general. Is it's such a fascinating love affair.
- 49:28Speaker 1: I mean, you know, when my parents were sixteen years old,
- 49:31Speaker 1: they'll do our dad's MG and for them back then,
- 49:35Speaker 1: that was their their campfire. Do you know what I mean,
- 49:37Speaker 1: and for a lot of fans working on cars together
- 49:41Speaker 1: or talking about cars, debating about cars, it's a passion,
- 49:44Speaker 1: it's a clubhouse. And to see Peter, I guess it
- 49:49Speaker 1: was almost like their God, you know, they're king, they are.
- 49:54Speaker 4: It was interesting because it didn't matter whether you're a
- 49:56Speaker 4: Ford fan, didn't matter what you model you were, and
- 50:00Speaker 4: they respected Peter he was he was applauded by all
- 50:04Speaker 4: of them, and so it was to me it was
- 50:07Speaker 4: always interesting and there was back in those days. There
- 50:09Speaker 4: was a lot of camaraderie. So if you saw somebody
- 50:11Speaker 4: having trouble, you helped them. You know. We often gave
- 50:14Speaker 4: sets of tires or sent one of our mechanics down
- 50:17Speaker 4: to help up the guys who were just breaking into it,
- 50:20Speaker 4: who didn't have money and couldn't do it. So but
- 50:23Speaker 4: you know, it came a time when you had to
- 50:26Speaker 4: know you were allowed to be seen talking to anybody
- 50:29Speaker 4: from another team because you might be spreading the secrets.
- 50:32Speaker 4: And it just developed into this, and then when Tony
- 50:35Speaker 4: Cochran took over, he wanted it to be the equivalent
- 50:37Speaker 4: of the Formula one and so another level of you
- 50:40Speaker 4: know that extreme, So all of that friendliness to camaraderie
- 50:46Speaker 4: had to go under cover, and it was It was
- 50:48Speaker 4: sad because at the end of a race on Sundays,
- 50:51Speaker 4: you know, the whole heap of teams would get together
- 50:53Speaker 4: for drinks and a barbecue and it was you know,
- 50:56Speaker 4: everybody talked and shared things. But you know, it came
- 50:59Speaker 4: a time when Peter was getting towards the end of
- 51:03Speaker 4: his career when he wasn't allowed to lift the bonnet
- 51:06Speaker 4: of his car and his own team, he wasn't allowed
- 51:08Speaker 4: to talk to the mechanics. He wasn't. They were bringing in,
- 51:12Speaker 4: you know, Craig and the younger drivers and they wanted
- 51:15Speaker 4: but they wanted Peter because he bought with him huge
- 51:19Speaker 4: fan base, huge sponsor support, and announced they didn't have,
- 51:26Speaker 4: so they wanted him. And this isn't the guys in
- 51:29Speaker 4: the team were fantastic, don't get me wrong, I'm talking
- 51:31Speaker 4: administrative wise. So they wanted him. They needed him for
- 51:34Speaker 4: all those reasons. But having got them those things, got
- 51:39Speaker 4: his sponsors signed over now with their signature on the thing.
- 51:43Speaker 4: Suddenly and he looked at me and he said, he said,
- 51:46Speaker 4: this is this is first race meeting for that year
- 51:49Speaker 4: was at Winton and it was so embarrassing. The poor
- 51:53Speaker 4: bugger was just you know, couldn't look at his car,
- 51:55Speaker 4: couldn't talk to mcteam of the drivers. And so by
- 51:59Speaker 4: the time we hopped in the to come home, he
- 52:01Speaker 4: was really gutted. And I said to him, well, why
- 52:05Speaker 4: hang around, Why not say now, it's say now that
- 52:08Speaker 4: you're going to retire at the end of the year.
- 52:09Speaker 4: That way it gives you every race meeting around the
- 52:11Speaker 4: country say goodbye, sign all the autographs, and get you
- 52:15Speaker 4: out of this situation. So he went through a couple
- 52:18Speaker 4: of years at the end there that were just abysmal.
- 52:20Speaker 4: I was just horrified with how it worked for somebody
- 52:24Speaker 4: who had brought so much to the sport that was
- 52:28Speaker 4: given such a tough time by people who caught They
- 52:31Speaker 4: wanted him, corporate, they wanted him, but they wanted to
- 52:34Speaker 4: control him. They had to control him for them to
- 52:36Speaker 4: get what they wanted out of it. And that was
- 52:39Speaker 4: total insult. But anyhow, that's the joys of you know,
- 52:43Speaker 4: change happening, evolution of drivers coming and going, and you know,
- 52:47Speaker 4: I look at some of it now and I think, yeah,
- 52:49Speaker 4: there's some little bits of that shows up now that's
- 52:51Speaker 4: not quite the same.
- 52:53Speaker 2: But it's not the same these days.
- 52:54Speaker 3: If you look at supercars, they're just there's so little
- 52:57Speaker 3: resemblance to a road car. Back then at used to
- 52:59Speaker 3: the same exactly there and under the skin they're very similar.
- 53:03Speaker 3: It's just it's a bit sort of disappointing, you know.
- 53:07Speaker 3: It is.
- 53:07Speaker 4: I go occasionally and I watch occasionally on TV, but
- 53:13Speaker 4: it's not the same. And I just I look, there
- 53:18Speaker 4: was a time when the sport applauded heroic individual so
- 53:24Speaker 4: the likes of Dick and Moff and Peter and John Bowen,
- 53:27Speaker 4: those were individual and had a big following in their
- 53:30Speaker 4: own right. Well, when the change happened and it became
- 53:35Speaker 4: sort of suitcus they the ruling was that no one person,
- 53:40Speaker 4: no one team would get more support than another, and
- 53:44Speaker 4: therefore no individual could stand out. So rather than have
- 53:47Speaker 4: a person that the fans could relate to, it's common
- 53:51Speaker 4: field and you sit there and think, no, and they'd
- 53:54Speaker 4: have a go at the guys who dared to speak up,
- 53:56Speaker 4: and that says, hang on, they got personality.
- 53:58Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, that's what you see these days.
- 54:00Speaker 3: Anyone that does speak, they get slapped down.
- 54:02Speaker 4: Exactly.
- 54:03Speaker 2: They just have an opinion. That's the problem is.
- 54:06Speaker 4: It's a shame and I sort of on one level,
- 54:10Speaker 4: I feel for them, But on the other hand, they've
- 54:12Speaker 4: never experienced anything else exactly, and a lot of them
- 54:15Speaker 4: because they've never owned the team, they've never had to
- 54:18Speaker 4: do the media, they've never had to get the sponsors.
- 54:22Speaker 4: They biff and bag and they don't care if they
- 54:24Speaker 4: knock somebody else off the track and total of somebody
- 54:26Speaker 4: else's car. They don't have to pay for the repairs.
- 54:29Speaker 4: They don't have to go through all of that stuff.
- 54:31Speaker 4: And I look and I think, you know the amount
- 54:34Speaker 4: of or lack of respect that some of them, the
- 54:37Speaker 4: younger ones have today because they don't have ownership in
- 54:43Speaker 4: the team. They're employed driver. Whereas we go back to
- 54:46Speaker 4: the time where Dick Glenn's seat and you know, Peter,
- 54:50Speaker 4: you know, they owned the team. The financial risk.
- 54:54Speaker 2: Was all differently as well, because you.
- 54:58Speaker 4: Can't and all that happened every time was the mortgage
- 55:01Speaker 4: on our home just got bigger and bigger because you've
- 55:03Speaker 4: got to find more money. So for Peter, the sponsorship
- 55:05Speaker 4: money came in and that was for the go fast.
- 55:08Speaker 4: It's bibow so you can so you can do the cooking.
- 55:11Speaker 4: You can feed the crew, you can do the timing,
- 55:12Speaker 4: you can make the costume, the girls costumes. You can
- 55:15Speaker 4: fix our race suits, you can make our race suits.
- 55:17Speaker 4: All of that was mine and look after Peter at
- 55:21Speaker 4: the same and the sponsorship money came in for the
- 55:25Speaker 4: go fast and look good. Yeah, it's got to look good.
- 55:28Speaker 4: So you know, there was one year in Bathist where
- 55:32Speaker 4: if you led for a lap in qualifying, fastest lap,
- 55:36Speaker 4: leading the laps in the race, blah blah, everything, and
- 55:39Speaker 4: he won everything that was possible to win. It was
- 55:43Speaker 4: a dream thing in that sense. But by the time
- 55:46Speaker 4: you paid your co drivers because you'd give them, promise
- 55:50Speaker 4: them or your crew, if you win, you get a
- 55:52Speaker 4: certain thing. We didn't meet costs. We'd won everything and
- 55:55Speaker 4: still didn't mean costs. So people automatically assumed that because
- 55:59Speaker 4: you were there and the leading edge, you were wealthy,
- 56:02Speaker 4: but like everybody else, you were struggling to be there.
- 56:06Speaker 3: And so that works like if you're if you run
- 56:09Speaker 3: a race team, you guys are paying for everything. When
- 56:12Speaker 3: it comes to sponsorships, do they always have strings attached?
- 56:16Speaker 3: I mean that they'll get something on the car, But
- 56:17Speaker 3: does it mean that Pete would have to go and
- 56:20Speaker 3: do ads and talks and stuff like that.
- 56:23Speaker 4: Well, at one point in time, when Peter was King
- 56:26Speaker 4: of Bomber and Queen, it came out and we were
- 56:32Speaker 4: invited to have lunch with the Queen, and Peter would
- 56:34Speaker 4: say yes initially, and then Mobile had a function on
- 56:38Speaker 4: for their dealers and they said we need you there,
- 56:40Speaker 4: so we walked out. We didn't go to lunch with
- 56:42Speaker 4: the Queen. We did the mobile functions.
- 56:46Speaker 1: Can you imagine that conversation, Sorry, lez, i can't make
- 56:50Speaker 1: it to the sandwiches. I've got to go do this
- 56:53Speaker 1: thing for a bloody petrol company.
- 56:56Speaker 4: He had to get permission to wear it clossis cloth
- 56:58Speaker 4: crown because you can't. You cannot wear a crown in
- 57:02Speaker 4: front of a royalty if they've got the crown, and
- 57:03Speaker 4: she had.
- 57:04Speaker 1: Her crown so versus the queen.
- 57:08Speaker 4: It's just, you know, all of these these things. I mean,
- 57:11Speaker 4: it was there was always something, always something which was
- 57:17Speaker 4: in one level exciting, but it was exhausting because people
- 57:21Speaker 4: would say to me, oh, you know, you're so lucky.
- 57:23Speaker 1: I don't.
- 57:23Speaker 4: It's what places with me.
- 57:24Speaker 2: For a few weeks.
- 57:26Speaker 4: It was it was full on.
- 57:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I imagine, I mean just being a race driver.
- 57:30Speaker 3: Being part of the support crew is full time stuff
- 57:34Speaker 3: for different engagements.
- 57:36Speaker 4: Well, he had all the business meetings, all the media stuff,
- 57:39Speaker 4: the fans stuff, he was constantly in demand. I don't know,
- 57:43Speaker 4: I honestly don't know how he survived and coped with
- 57:47Speaker 4: it all.
- 57:47Speaker 1: Well, I was going to say, you should play. You
- 57:49Speaker 1: do play a big part in that because from what
- 57:52Speaker 1: I hear as well, it's Peter was this sort of
- 57:56Speaker 1: ball of chaotic energy and you really were the sort
- 57:59Speaker 1: of the calm and focus behind him and prevented I guess,
- 58:07Speaker 1: so he doesn't burn out, you know.
- 58:09Speaker 4: Well totally because for me it was you know, and
- 58:14Speaker 4: I know it's going back to the old gender the roles,
- 58:16Speaker 4: but at that stage, for me, it was in order
- 58:20Speaker 4: for him to do and be the success he needed
- 58:22Speaker 4: to be, he needed to have a good, sound, support based,
- 58:25Speaker 4: peaceful So we had an understanding with the crew myself
- 58:30Speaker 4: that if there was any problems at all, he doesn't
- 58:33Speaker 4: know about them. When he gets the race tracked, he
- 58:35Speaker 4: is there for the fans, for the sponsors, for the race,
- 58:38Speaker 4: for the car. Anything that's a problem, we'll deal with it. So,
- 58:43Speaker 4: you know, there when we sort of split with Holden,
- 58:45Speaker 4: and they had issued legal papers that practice stay at
- 58:50Speaker 4: the first practice day, the pits. Do we keep these
- 58:53Speaker 4: away from him? Do you know all of that sort
- 58:55Speaker 4: of stuff. So it was on one hand people would say,
- 58:58Speaker 4: but you're treating him like a child. Then if you
- 59:00Speaker 4: had to do what he had to.
- 59:01Speaker 3: Do, imagine though, having that in the back of your mind,
- 59:03Speaker 3: just as you're about to go racing.
- 59:06Speaker 1: Yeah, that's not treating someone like a child. That's giving
- 59:10Speaker 1: them the best chance at success.
- 59:12Speaker 4: It was for me it was the time of learning
- 59:15Speaker 4: about the media. You have to pardon me if I
- 59:17Speaker 4: treed on tos you guys, but at one point in time,
- 59:21Speaker 4: this is when we're splitting from Holden, and the media
- 59:24Speaker 4: want interviews, interviews, and if he was going to be
- 59:26Speaker 4: doing all the interviews, he wasn't going to be working
- 59:28Speaker 4: at trying to get where do we build the cars now?
- 59:30Speaker 4: Who do we employ? Who do we So he was
- 59:32Speaker 4: doing that, So I would do the media interviews and
- 59:35Speaker 4: I had never had to deal with media before. So
- 59:39Speaker 4: I've got this interview with this guy and he comes
- 59:41Speaker 4: out and I didn't understand what got me in there,
- 59:44Speaker 4: And his opening thing was he sets me up. They've
- 59:47Speaker 4: got the lighting, and he sets me up and he
- 59:51Speaker 4: says to me, isn't this Peter hiding behind your skirts? O?
- 59:56Speaker 2: God?
- 59:56Speaker 4: And I believe it's kind of disgusting thing to say.
- 1:00:00Speaker 4: It was seven thirty or something, so the promotion for
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: that to go to TV. What a disgusting thing to
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: say was what they did. And then people in the
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: media when they saw it said to me, you understand
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: he was sitting you up? And I said, what do
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: you mean he was sitting up? Well, for start, he's
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: got the camera sit down though that looks up. He's
- 1:00:15Speaker 4: got the lighting sit down, he's got a green lens
- 1:00:17Speaker 4: on the camera. So it all is designed to make
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: it hawkish, throw shadows, all of those things. And I've
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: said that I think seriously. Anyhow, I didn't find that
- 1:00:26Speaker 4: out until after, but it taught me then the strategies
- 1:00:31Speaker 4: that people would go to the media would go to.
- 1:00:33Speaker 4: So I get home from there, I deal with him.
- 1:00:36Speaker 4: I get home from there. The phone's ringing its radio
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: stations in South Australia and they heard. So you realize
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: then that all the media around Australia listened to anything
- 1:00:47Speaker 4: that might be interesting. They've got somebody listening and.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: And that is the beginning in a media sense, that
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: is the beginning of setting a narrative.
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: And fair enough, and I understand all that, but when
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: you add that, it's okay when everything because he had
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: been the media's goldenhead boy and suddenly they decided he's
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: the one we go for because it's big stories. And
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: so to see him feeling mortally wounded because he'd never
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: done anything wrong, and to know that in order for
- 1:01:16Speaker 4: him to get through this, we need to have a
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: very calm situation. And so we took care of all
- 1:01:25Speaker 4: of the tough stuff, and maybe we did treat him
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: like it, but then he didn't have time for it also,
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: which is fair enough.
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: So did you learn from that experience with the media.
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: Did you treat every future interview differently?
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: I looked more carefully, But Peter actually said to me, Bevo,
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: He said, make sure that everybody you talked to in
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: the media has our home phone number, our facts details,
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: our emails, all of that. And I said to why,
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: and he said, if you don't and they write a
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: story and you've refused to participate, he said, you've got
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: no right to complain about when it's wrong. And so
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: God bless you. He'd give everybody a homephone number of
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: my details, and somebody had come up to them with
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: a personal problem or health problem. I just got to
- 1:02:09Speaker 4: call BEV here, here's a number. So the phone. He'd
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: come home, he'd be sitting at the kitchen bench, the
- 1:02:15Speaker 4: phone would bring and I'd talk on the phone because
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: somebody's yeah, the brother's dying and blah blah blah blah blah.
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: And don't do that. I said, what do you mean?
- 1:02:24Speaker 4: He said, don't talk on the phone when I'm here.
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: I'm not home very often. I want to have your attention.
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: You're the one that's giving them my number, You're the
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: one that's telling them I have the solutions. And so
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: it was sort of it was, it got very complex,
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: just you know, it was you know, can.
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: I say on top of all that, there was also
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: creating a home life as well.
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: And at two hunderd Acre property, Yeah.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: It's just stunning property. It was a stun property too. Yeah.
- 1:02:56Speaker 4: And we had Peter's parents living we built a house
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: for them on our block, and had his aunt and
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: uncle living next door who didn't have any children. And
- 1:03:04Speaker 4: my father had dementia and came over so I had.
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: We had all these oldies and in about five years,
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: in over a period about three years, lost five of them.
- 1:03:14Speaker 4: So I was nursing them at Omas Wilson.
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: It was because that's that's all.
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: No, I don't say it for that reason, but I
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: look back because it's there to be done. You do it,
- 1:03:25Speaker 4: You don't, you don't look at anything else, You just
- 1:03:27Speaker 4: do it. And I look at you know, the young
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: ones now when they have their kids and they need help,
- 1:03:33Speaker 4: and I think, yeah, do.
- 1:03:34Speaker 3: You seriously, like that's that's a good point someone.
- 1:03:40Speaker 4: We didn't get that help and then we had there
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: was no early learning center, no daycare.
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: Center, nurse on call, all that sort of stuff, none
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: of that. It was always such a welcoming and warm
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: place to go to. That's my memories of of your place.
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: And I remember you were talking about the tire situation before.
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: I remember this one time God and I remember, like
- 1:04:04Speaker 1: I'm genuinely there's two things that I'm genuinely embarrassed to
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: talk about. And I didn't think Alex would remember, but
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: she remembered that she brought them up one one time
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: was and it was it was a It actually gave
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: me a lifelong lesson in in kindness. I had the
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: I had this little Zuzuki Swift right, and I used
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: to drive it was my first card and I'd drive
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: it from you know, into Nutfield at the time, and
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: the tires were baled on it. And one time it
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: was like I was driving home at like two o'clock
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: in the morning or something like that, I ran off
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: the road into some sort of a ditch into some
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: poor person's fence, which was a barbed wire fence. And
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: I was too embarrassed to like call call for help
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: or anything. So there I am two o'clock in the morning.
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: It was pissing down with rain. I'm trying to like,
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: I'm trying to I'm trying to read. I'm trying to
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: pull this barbed wire fence off my little car and
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: then try and get out of the ditch.
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: And then in an interesting spot and.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: Some guy pulls over and goes, oh, you need a hand.
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: I'm like yeah, yeah, And I'm like, please, don't be
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: the person who lives in this house, and he said, oh,
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: I lived just over there.
- 1:05:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: People come off the radio all the time of radio anyway,
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: so it sort of helps me take this thing up.
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: I drive out of the ditch. And the next day,
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: I think I pulled up in your driveway with a
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: scratched up car, and you just went, Okay, you can't
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: you can't be doing this, you can't be doing this.
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: And obviously you know you can't have your daughter's boyfriend
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: at the time driving around with ball tires. Let's let's
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: get that fixed. But it was also such a such
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: a selfless act of kindness, and I remembered that a lot.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: And yeah, within BEV made one phone call and within
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: within an hour I was down at some garage putting
- 1:05:55Speaker 1: some Bridge firestones on there. Fantastic tires. Shout out to Bridge.
- 1:06:01Speaker 4: Though, amazing company.
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: But yeah, there was actually this other time right where
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: I had a I had a problem with that with
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: my car. It just wouldn't start, and I had a
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: problem with my cart and wouldn't start. Him like, what
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: is going on here? And I was I was still
- 1:06:20Speaker 1: I was quite nervous around around Peter, and I was like, oh,
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: there's something wrong with my car, and you know, he
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: was just enjoying a movie on the couch and he
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: sort of comes out, He's like, yeah, just just just
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: pops the bonnet. Yeah, just give it a start. Yeah,
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: maybe it's the battery. Hang on a second on and
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: he sort of goes inside and boils the kettle and
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: sometimes it can be a bit of thick tar around
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: the connections, you know, sort of pour some boiling water
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: over there.
- 1:06:46Speaker 3: Yeah, and then he.
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: Comes around to my driver's side door and I'm in
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: there and he just gives me this look, and I'm
- 1:06:54Speaker 1: like what, And he just gives me this kind of
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: rye look, a mixture of like this sort of smerk.
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: And it also mate just goes put it into park.
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: Oh my god, I think about that and I cringe.
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: But look with him with cars, he had this uncanny neck,
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: which is why he could drive cars that other guys
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: would pop in and couldn't drive. But when it came
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: to home cars, it's the same thing happened. And I
- 1:07:33Speaker 4: left him home one Saturday morning and I had taken
- 1:07:36Speaker 4: our car and gone up to Saint Andrew's Markets, the
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: local big markets. Everybody has a ball park the car.
- 1:07:43Speaker 4: I go into the market, so I come out, get
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: back in the car to go home. Turn the key on,
- 1:07:49Speaker 4: won't start. Smoke smoke pouring into the cabin. I can
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: smell it. I turned the key on. Oh God, lifted
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: up the bonnet, went looked, couldn't see anything. It looked underneath,
- 1:07:57Speaker 4: couldn't see anything. Had another go smoke.
- 1:08:00Speaker 2: God.
- 1:08:01Speaker 4: So a couple of the young guys in the district
- 1:08:04Speaker 4: who had worked on were working on our place, walked
- 1:08:07Speaker 4: past and I said to them, look, I've got problems
- 1:08:09Speaker 4: the car. You know, we go to start it and
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: it's smoking. Oh go bebo. So they hop in and
- 1:08:16Speaker 4: go to start smoke. They don't want to touch. They don't
- 1:08:19Speaker 4: want to see the whole car go up one of it,
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: you know, good holding cars go up and smoke. So
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: I said, look, it's all right, I'll bring Peter and
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: get him to come up. They said, yeah, I ring
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: him to come up. So I've wrung him time. As
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: he come up, he said, boy, what's going on? I
- 1:08:33Speaker 4: explained to him. You know, turn the keyon smoke every
- 1:08:35Speaker 4: wed Oh God, hops in, turns the key on, the
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: car starts immediately, no smoke, just got the touch and
- 1:08:43Speaker 4: the guys standing there. I'm looking there and I thought, yeah,
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: of course. But that's the thing that he had something
- 1:08:51Speaker 4: and I could never understand it. He had a connection
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: where he and a car whatever car, we're just they
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: understood each They just you know, and you sort of
- 1:09:04Speaker 4: it's intimidating because it makes you very weary about asking
- 1:09:08Speaker 4: him next time round.
- 1:09:10Speaker 2: Yeah, especially when he comes along and it just switches on.
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: He did tell me one stage, and apologies to anybody
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: listening to this who thinks you know badly of Peter
- 1:09:18Speaker 4: for this, but on one he didn't drink. And if
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: he did have a drink at what he wasn't a
- 1:09:24Speaker 4: good drinker by any means, what you'd call a two
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: pot screamer. So I would have to drive if he
- 1:09:31Speaker 4: had a drink, which is fine. So driving one night,
- 1:09:33Speaker 4: and because he was a shocking back seat driver, he
- 1:09:36Speaker 4: taught me. He gave me driving lessons for twenty eight
- 1:09:39Speaker 4: years and I never succeeded about it. But this particular time,
- 1:09:43Speaker 4: driving home, he's giving me an instruction and I obviously didn't.
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: I wasn't quite perfect enough. He said, giving you a
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: good car to drive is like feeding strawberries to pigs.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: Jesus.
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: He stopped a car, slammed on the brakes, out, walked
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: around to the passenger site. Get over there, mate. So
- 1:10:04Speaker 4: whether he drunk or not, we weren't they far from home,
- 1:10:07Speaker 4: but he could just say because he assumed that everybody
- 1:10:14Speaker 4: else had that connection.
- 1:10:14Speaker 1: With Kes and we did.
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: It's just the way it what.
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: It's such of a it's such a focus. I've always
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: admired that sort of thing because when you are in
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: a car of that capacity and you're on a race
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: track or whatever, there's so much this focus, and there's feel,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: and there's so much like natural intuition when you're feeling
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: sort of a road. It's not just it's everything all
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: your senses. And I think that's that's one of the
- 1:10:40Speaker 1: things about the Bathist one thousand as well.
- 1:10:42Speaker 3: It's but that's the point of difference because everyone can
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: have the same car, but it comes down to that
- 1:10:48Speaker 3: next little bit, and that's it's that next little bit
- 1:10:50Speaker 3: that gets you the win.
- 1:10:52Speaker 4: Earlier in the piece at Colder, for example, they had
- 1:10:56Speaker 4: a series of races where they all rove the same
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: car with the same engine capacity and he's still won.
- 1:11:02Speaker 3: So that's that's the key difference, right, That's that's where
- 1:11:05Speaker 3: you're willing to take perhaps a bit more risk and
- 1:11:08Speaker 3: you're willing to put more on the line to get
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: that win. And that's where you're going to you're going
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: to find the difference, you.
- 1:11:13Speaker 4: Know with that stuff. I mean, you know, occasionally you'd
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: get high profile sports people who get a hot lap.
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: Surprising number of them embarrass themselves in the journey when
- 1:11:23Speaker 4: they're getting out of the track. It was just, you know,
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: one of those things that he could you know, I
- 1:11:31Speaker 4: mean you look at the Baffirst where he won by
- 1:11:35Speaker 4: six laps. I mean, it couldn't happen again because these
- 1:11:38Speaker 4: days that you know, when you've got the safety cars
- 1:11:40Speaker 4: and all that sort of stuff. But that was the
- 1:11:42Speaker 4: easiest race he ever won ever drive. You know, to him,
- 1:11:46Speaker 4: the races that meant most were the ones where he he,
- 1:11:49Speaker 4: for what one reason or another, had to start from
- 1:11:51Speaker 4: the back of the grid and then to come through
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: and win that race. It's a yeah, that one's achievement.
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: That's an achievement. But in terms of, you know, ordinary race,
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: he was never interested in what the opposition were doing.
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: The crew could go and find out, but he didn't care.
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: He said, all we do is we focus on what
- 1:12:10Speaker 4: we're doing the best we can best. I can go
- 1:12:12Speaker 4: down the straight, the best turn, that corner the best.
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: That's where my focus is. Nowhere else, and so he
- 1:12:18Speaker 4: taught me about the whole thing and forget everything else.
- 1:12:20Speaker 4: It's what you're doing right now in that now moment.
- 1:12:24Speaker 4: And one year we had Holden had young Lions, so
- 1:12:28Speaker 4: they were bringing the young drivers through and we and
- 1:12:32Speaker 4: each of the leading teams had one of the young lions.
- 1:12:34Speaker 4: So we got one and Peter was intent on teaching
- 1:12:38Speaker 4: and talking to him all that sort of stuff. And
- 1:12:40Speaker 4: we've walked into our caravan Tom and he's sitting there
- 1:12:45Speaker 4: and he's got this motivational speaker with him who's making
- 1:12:48Speaker 4: him rehearse his speech when he won the race at
- 1:12:52Speaker 4: the end of the day, hasn't he We told her
- 1:12:56Speaker 4: to leave and we've said to him, mate, it's not
- 1:12:59Speaker 4: how it works.
- 1:13:00Speaker 2: He is crazy here.
- 1:13:02Speaker 4: That's straight round the corner, up the next straight, nowhere else.
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: You're not thinking about the end of the race. You're
- 1:13:06Speaker 4: thinking about here. And the guy said, yeah, great. So
- 1:13:10Speaker 4: the warm up comes for the race before the Race
- 1:13:12Speaker 4: of the Stars, you get a lap, we take the
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: cars down, warm them up. What does he do it
- 1:13:16Speaker 4: gets it coming around the top? Crang's the car? Does
- 1:13:19Speaker 4: he get to start the race?
- 1:13:21Speaker 2: He's busy thinking about his victory speech. It's unbelievable.
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: And so it's opportunities like that that I you know,
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: Peter was so profound, he was so strong with the
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: messages that he got out and for the ones who listened,
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: like Craig listened because he was young, they made a
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: great thing. But there's a lot of other drivers there
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: that were fantastic drivers, but they didn't necessarily have the engineering,
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: no house, they didn't necessarily have patients with the media,
- 1:13:50Speaker 4: they didn't have the fan base followings. All of those
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: various things made a huge difference, which is why, you know,
- 1:13:59Speaker 4: Peter and Moffin it stood out because they had more
- 1:14:03Speaker 4: than just a driver, a driving skill. You know, it
- 1:14:07Speaker 4: is a package. You know, as you say, there's so
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: much going on, it's so forll On, but unless you're
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: you know, I look at these race drivers, they're not
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: just tuns. They are intelligent, amazing individuals who have managed
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: to stitch together all these attributes and make something of it.
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: Well, it seems Lownsey has done a fair job at that.
- 1:14:27Speaker 3: Like he's really good with the media. He seems very
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: patient and an excellent driver as well, and I think
- 1:14:32Speaker 3: he learned a lot.
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: He did and Peter worked really good. Yeah, I won't
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: mention names, but there were a couple of others who
- 1:14:37Speaker 4: didn't listen, and we're very happy to go around and
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: criticize whenever they didn't think anyone was listening. But it
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: had always comes back absolutely.
- 1:14:46Speaker 2: It's a very small.
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:14:49Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm curious for there ever discussions for Peter to
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: get into F one because I know that would have
- 1:14:54Speaker 3: been the next logical step. Right.
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: He drove open wheelers here. He had a an open
- 1:15:00Speaker 4: wheeler in the category early in the piece, and his
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: father worked on the car for it, which was great,
- 1:15:07Speaker 4: but as he said, the fans don't support it here
- 1:15:12Speaker 4: in Australia, sponsors don't support what's the point in miss
- 1:15:14Speaker 4: putting all my time into this when it doesn't have
- 1:15:17Speaker 4: the support in Australia. And you know, he was asked
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: to race oversea. I mean he drove early back in
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: the early seventies. He drove it to a Spa with
- 1:15:27Speaker 4: Jerry Marshall for the English driver and you know he
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: got a lot of requests to drive there because then
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: we did Spa and Lemon and that sort of stuff.
- 1:15:35Speaker 4: So he but that was driving a car that Australia
- 1:15:38Speaker 4: is related to and therefore he had he didn't have
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: any trouble getting sponsorship. Did he like being away from home?
- 1:15:43Speaker 4: Absolutely not. I who was going to cook him and
- 1:15:47Speaker 4: lays close out in the morning and put his map
- 1:15:52Speaker 4: for He'd get his schedule for the day and I'd
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: have it photocopied, and I have the page of the
- 1:15:58Speaker 4: back then the road directory and have it all laying
- 1:16:02Speaker 4: out waiting for him, so that he was up. It's
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: the only way he could get with his change of
- 1:16:06Speaker 4: clothes because he'd have to go from a media meeting
- 1:16:08Speaker 4: to a board meeting to you know, so he'd have
- 1:16:10Speaker 4: to have the full range of gears, so you'd have
- 1:16:12Speaker 4: to lay his clothes, his information, all of that.
- 1:16:14Speaker 3: That is amazing. He was very fortunate to have you.
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: I mean, that's that's pretty awesome. He was.
- 1:16:20Speaker 4: Yeah, but that's you know, I mean it was a
- 1:16:22Speaker 4: joint venture.
- 1:16:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: And when sort of it was all coming to and
- 1:16:26Speaker 4: he said, Bebbo, he said, I think I've taught you
- 1:16:27Speaker 4: everything you need to know.
- 1:16:28Speaker 2: You'll be fine, You'll be right.
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: Yeah, Can I ask Actually, it's cool if you don't
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: want to if you don't want to go there but
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: that day when he was doing the Tiger West and
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: you get that phone call about his passing. I mean,
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: that's a phone call. Was that a phone call the
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: way you found out it was?
- 1:16:46Speaker 4: But I don't know who called. And it was a
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: woman's voice, and she just said there's been an accident.
- 1:16:52Speaker 4: And for me, in having teenage kids at the time,
- 1:16:54Speaker 4: I'm thinking which one of the kids, And she said, no,
- 1:16:58Speaker 4: it's not the kids. He said it's Peter. He hasn't
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: made it and hung up the phone. And so I've
- 1:17:04Speaker 4: got this phone call, and I'm sitting there thinking, and
- 1:17:07Speaker 4: I've got to let the kids know. But I can
- 1:17:09Speaker 4: hear a helicopter and I looked out the window and
- 1:17:12Speaker 4: the cars and so the media landing in the paddock,
- 1:17:14Speaker 4: that driving up the drive. The camera's wearing. I've got
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: to go out and talk to them. And I hadn't
- 1:17:21Speaker 4: told the kids. So Jamie, the eldest, was doing an
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: interview with somebody for a magazine and the guy doing
- 1:17:29Speaker 4: the interview got the phone call and Jamie was saying,
- 1:17:32Speaker 4: just look at this guy. He's gone white. He didn't
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: even what's wrong. The guy had to tell him. Rob
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: worked with He's soon to be fiance at computer Share
- 1:17:44Speaker 4: so I could ring her and get her to tell
- 1:17:45Speaker 4: him and Alexander had gone to the movie's gone to
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: see a goal. All she'd said was she'd gone to
- 1:17:49Speaker 4: a gold Star movie and I knew what movie it was,
- 1:17:52Speaker 4: so I had to look and find out and get her.
- 1:17:55Speaker 4: When she gets out of there, her phone's going to
- 1:17:57Speaker 4: get So I got a girlfriend to go and sit,
- 1:18:00Speaker 4: track down, sit outside. So you don't get the privilege
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: when you got a public profile, you don't get the
- 1:18:07Speaker 4: privilege where you had no private time. And we're no
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: sooner dealt with that, and the funeral comes and you're
- 1:18:16Speaker 4: sitting there and then the media stuff for the will
- 1:18:20Speaker 4: went on for nearly two years. So it was excuse me,
- 1:18:25Speaker 4: it was shit time. It was not an easy time.
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: And in that time, do you have time to yourself?
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: Does it take it? Is it years after where you
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: can sort of sit down and process it? Is there?
- 1:18:39Speaker 4: Look, The interesting thing is i was teaching life skills
- 1:18:43Speaker 4: at the local community living and Learning center, and I'm
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: thinking about my kids, and I'm thinking about the fact
- 1:18:49Speaker 4: that I'm teaching life skills how to cope and stress,
- 1:18:51Speaker 4: and I feel if I stuffed. If I fall apart now,
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: I'm not going to be an example for my kids
- 1:18:57Speaker 4: and I will have no right to teach life schools
- 1:19:00Speaker 4: because if you can't manage it. So the whole time,
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: I've got this conversation going on in my head. You
- 1:19:06Speaker 4: have to do this, you have to stay on top,
- 1:19:09Speaker 4: you have to do all that. But then you know,
- 1:19:12Speaker 4: also had to sell the farm, all the legal stuff.
- 1:19:15Speaker 4: There were five six legal teams working on all this stuff,
- 1:19:18Speaker 4: and you just it just was an ongoing nightmare. You know,
- 1:19:23Speaker 4: you just it's a debarcle that, but you don't have
- 1:19:25Speaker 4: any choice. It's there. You've got to deal with it.
- 1:19:27Speaker 3: So, yeah, these processes are meant to make stuff simple,
- 1:19:31Speaker 3: but they don't.
- 1:19:32Speaker 2: Definitely don't.
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: They don't. And for me, I have to be completely honest.
- 1:19:37Speaker 4: The media were amazing. They hated what they were having
- 1:19:41Speaker 4: to do, but there was a job they had to
- 1:19:42Speaker 4: do it. And you know the other there was two
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: slight examples where one woman from Sydney and one was
- 1:19:50Speaker 4: a go here in Melbourne that were a little bit off.
- 1:19:53Speaker 4: But I have been given a really good run by
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: little media. So and because they appreciated the awkward situation,
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: I was in, so you know, they've been very kind.
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: So yeah, okay, you were talking about this just before
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: you came in, but we're talking about the fact that say,
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: Target Tazzy has been paused and Target all together all together. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:20:15Speaker 1: how do you feel about that?
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: On one hand, I'm torn because you know, people and
- 1:20:20Speaker 4: say guys, and I'm not meaning you know, but it's
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: more men, far more men than what women do. You know,
- 1:20:27Speaker 4: that's the reality. They are adrenaline driven junkies, most of them,
- 1:20:34Speaker 4: and they enjoy that, then they should be able to
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: do it. But if, as Target Tazzy has shown of
- 1:20:40Speaker 4: late that you know, it's lost, far too many could
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: drive its that conditions are not what they need to be.
- 1:20:48Speaker 4: I feel very much for the families when the drivers
- 1:20:51Speaker 4: or the navigators and that lose their life. I feel
- 1:20:53Speaker 4: for them because I know what they're going through. I
- 1:20:56Speaker 4: hated it when people said to me, but he died
- 1:20:59Speaker 4: doing what he loved. What a load of toss. I mean,
- 1:21:02Speaker 4: here's this guy who's taught class driving all these years.
- 1:21:07Speaker 4: He's the five face all of these things about responsible
- 1:21:12Speaker 4: and class driving and being watching what you do on
- 1:21:15Speaker 4: the road. For him to have died in that fashion
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: would have been the most embarrassing thing for him ever.
- 1:21:22Speaker 4: And so it pissed me off when people would say, oh,
- 1:21:25Speaker 4: but he died doing what he loved. Absolute toss. Absolute toss,
- 1:21:28Speaker 4: because six weeks before he died, he had wrung me
- 1:21:33Speaker 4: and had told me that he was sorry he had
- 1:21:38Speaker 4: failed as a partner, as a father, as a member
- 1:21:41Speaker 4: of the community, had never contributed anything worthwhile, and he
- 1:21:46Speaker 4: absolutely believed that it was sad because we didn't see
- 1:21:50Speaker 4: it that way. We didn't see him as failure in
- 1:21:51Speaker 4: any way. I mean, I don't know how he did
- 1:21:53Speaker 4: all the things he did, but it just gave me
- 1:21:57Speaker 4: the inkliner in understanding that it People were not talking
- 1:22:01Speaker 4: about mental illness in sport. That was only just starting
- 1:22:05Speaker 4: that when we're talking sixteen years ago. So the fact
- 1:22:09Speaker 4: that he was retiring and didn't want to. He was
- 1:22:14Speaker 4: a peter pan, perpetual young thing that was big enough
- 1:22:20Speaker 4: on its own, and he didn't. He said to me,
- 1:22:24Speaker 4: the reason he'd wrung me was to actually tell me
- 1:22:26Speaker 4: that he had finally retired. He was it, That was it?
- 1:22:30Speaker 4: No more bevo, He said, I know it would mean
- 1:22:32Speaker 4: more to you to hear that than anybody else, and
- 1:22:36Speaker 4: you know, he said all the other things. So that's fine.
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: But then the day that I find out he's died,
- 1:22:41Speaker 4: I found out he's in that event. We didn't even
- 1:22:43Speaker 4: know he was in the event. He hadn't had the
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: courage to tell us because he'd already broken to us
- 1:22:49Speaker 4: that he retired. And so whatever it was that convinced
- 1:22:53Speaker 4: him to go out and have one more go was
- 1:22:59Speaker 4: who was he trying to prove it to himself? He
- 1:23:01Speaker 4: didn't need to prove anything to prove and you know,
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: to go in the way he did. You know, you
- 1:23:07Speaker 4: just look and you think, well, it's also wrong, but
- 1:23:11Speaker 4: it's real.
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: That's what happens when.
- 1:23:13Speaker 4: You say about targer, you know, limiting and that. Yeah,
- 1:23:17Speaker 4: there is a time when they have to you know,
- 1:23:20Speaker 4: set some regulations. You can't simply have people continually work.
- 1:23:25Speaker 4: I mean, the safety gear is what they wear, the
- 1:23:28Speaker 4: way the cars are built. There shouldn't be any deaths.
- 1:23:31Speaker 2: Exactly in the sport at all. And that's the thing.
- 1:23:33Speaker 3: Somebody with Peter's skill, if they can die in an
- 1:23:36Speaker 3: event like that, that means that an average Joe who's
- 1:23:39Speaker 3: gone and spend.
- 1:23:40Speaker 1: A couple Yeah, a lot of wealthy people that hobbyists
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: or so.
- 1:23:44Speaker 4: Following that I got I did a lot of public
- 1:23:46Speaker 4: speaking with road safety. I was on the patron for
- 1:23:52Speaker 4: the Road Trauma Association and i'd go up to with
- 1:23:56Speaker 4: the Australian Road Safety Foundation. I'd go up and we'd
- 1:23:59Speaker 4: talk do safety talks in the minds up from Coeensland
- 1:24:02Speaker 4: and stuff like that. And the thing for me, the
- 1:24:04Speaker 4: way I would put it across is, look, here's somebody
- 1:24:07Speaker 4: who is seen to be the best drita in top
- 1:24:10Speaker 4: competitive sport in Australia, thirteenth in the world wide best ones.
- 1:24:15Speaker 4: And I said, and he can still lose his life.
- 1:24:16Speaker 4: So you guys, let's look at this and see what
- 1:24:19Speaker 4: it is you've got to change to make sure that
- 1:24:21Speaker 4: you don't put your families in the situation that we
- 1:24:23Speaker 4: found out. So when you can get it down to
- 1:24:26Speaker 4: those basic things, it can sometimes penetrate and make a difference.
- 1:24:32Speaker 4: So if out of something that really sucks, you can
- 1:24:36Speaker 4: turn something if in any way it can stop somebody
- 1:24:39Speaker 4: else from decision. So I look at target and things
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: like that. Nothing, Well I'm out. I've got nothing to
- 1:24:46Speaker 4: do with the decision making. But please be careful.
- 1:24:49Speaker 1: Well it's such an interesting race too, because there's nothing
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: that you know these targets. They're really individual style races.
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: I mean the fact that you're going through small country
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: towns roads. It's like a hay bail sort of barrier
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: and you can just go at it like a wild person.
- 1:25:08Speaker 3: But it's very different to a racetrack. At a racetrack
- 1:25:10Speaker 3: you have so much safety. You've got runoff areas. Some
- 1:25:13Speaker 3: of these places, you've got trees both sides of the road.
- 1:25:16Speaker 3: The weather can change very quickly, so you know the
- 1:25:19Speaker 3: car ahead could be in a different road condition to use.
- 1:25:21Speaker 3: Someone can spill oil, which you don't even know about
- 1:25:23Speaker 3: until you get there.
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: There's just so many variables that you don't have at
- 1:25:27Speaker 2: a racetrack.
- 1:25:28Speaker 3: And yeah, look to me, I've done a couple of
- 1:25:30Speaker 3: those events, just an enturing stages which are speed limited,
- 1:25:34Speaker 3: and even that, to me, I'm definitely not a race drive,
- 1:25:37Speaker 3: but sort of you know, white knuckled. I can't even
- 1:25:39Speaker 3: imagine what it would be like when there is no
- 1:25:41Speaker 3: speed limit and you're up against a clock like you are.
- 1:25:44Speaker 3: You are wanting to go fast, but it's well.
- 1:25:47Speaker 4: Where Peter METI's end. It was just up the road
- 1:25:51Speaker 4: from where I grew up with this as king, oh
- 1:25:52Speaker 4: you're kid, and I was asked to go back at number.
- 1:25:55Speaker 4: I'm not good, No thanks, no way. I don't need
- 1:25:58Speaker 4: to be seeing that it's just you. And at Bathurst,
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: I was up there a couple of weeks ago because
- 1:26:05Speaker 4: my middle son lives on Conrod Straight and so I
- 1:26:10Speaker 4: went up there because his kids came down from Queensland
- 1:26:13Speaker 4: for holidays. So I went up spent a couple of
- 1:26:15Speaker 4: days up there and had another visitor who's a gold
- 1:26:19Speaker 4: medal winner at the Olympics, came up to visit me
- 1:26:23Speaker 4: and took him on a lap around. I said, no,
- 1:26:26Speaker 4: you're driving, and just he was absolutely. You know when
- 1:26:32Speaker 4: you've come across skyline and you're getting down through the
- 1:26:34Speaker 4: ass and oh god, it scares hell out of most people,
- 1:26:39Speaker 4: and yet they just freeze through your notes.
- 1:26:41Speaker 2: Well, that's the thing.
- 1:26:42Speaker 3: If you haven't been there, you don't know the elevation changes,
- 1:26:45Speaker 3: and the elevation change is ridiculous. You are literally climbing
- 1:26:48Speaker 3: a steep road and they're flying through there. It is
- 1:26:52Speaker 3: a remarkable track, and I think you look at tracks
- 1:26:54Speaker 3: around the world, nothing else really compares to it. And
- 1:26:57Speaker 3: they're actually having discussions at the moment at Spa with
- 1:27:01Speaker 3: that second batters Yeah, and then Hockenheim.
- 1:27:05Speaker 4: You know, I mean Spa is an amazing track out
- 1:27:08Speaker 4: in the forest and all that is beautiful.
- 1:27:11Speaker 3: They're talking about the safety stuff there at the moment
- 1:27:13Speaker 3: as well, because they're constantly losing people there.
- 1:27:15Speaker 4: You know, we well, last twenty four hour race, we
- 1:27:19Speaker 4: did Oh my god, that's the pits were as you
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: come up the hill. Then basic rules were non existent.
- 1:27:27Speaker 4: We had in our pits, had a forty four fuel
- 1:27:31Speaker 4: gallon fuel and on top of that a bit of
- 1:27:34Speaker 4: wood and a chair and I'd sit on the chair
- 1:27:36Speaker 4: to do the timing. But then the corporate hospitality was
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: above and somebody and somebody dropped the umbrella hit me
- 1:27:44Speaker 4: on the top of the head. When the cars coming in,
- 1:27:47Speaker 4: I'd have to find a way leap down off this
- 1:27:50Speaker 4: structure to go in and get the food to feed
- 1:27:54Speaker 4: them all. In the moments with the pits, it just
- 1:27:57Speaker 4: Spa was. You know, you could wear what girlies in
- 1:28:01Speaker 4: their bikinis and wander along into the pit area and
- 1:28:04Speaker 4: you just for our guys to get to the car.
- 1:28:07Speaker 4: They developed a technique. They had a long bit of rope.
- 1:28:09Speaker 4: One would stand in front of the car and one
- 1:28:11Speaker 4: at the back, and it'd be laying on the ground
- 1:28:12Speaker 4: and when they needed them they had to pull the
- 1:28:14Speaker 4: rope tight and it it just toss all these clever
- 1:28:17Speaker 4: little dollies in their bikinis and out of the way.
- 1:28:21Speaker 4: Just spa was a very very unique situation. Very but again,
- 1:28:31Speaker 4: how many people in their life can find you know,
- 1:28:33Speaker 4: for somebody like me who grew up barefooted, horse and
- 1:28:37Speaker 4: cart ends up meeting going to the most amazing places,
- 1:28:42Speaker 4: meeting the most amazing people, doing the most amazing things.
- 1:28:45Speaker 4: So when people say to me, I feel sorry for
- 1:28:46Speaker 4: you've done it. I've had the best life. Has it
- 1:28:50Speaker 4: been perfect?
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: No?
- 1:28:51Speaker 4: I mean who has a perfect line. We're all going
- 1:28:54Speaker 4: to die eventually, that's the reality.
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: If you could see that, if you could see the
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: life on a board, would there be anything you change?
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: No? Not really. I mean there are a few people
- 1:29:08Speaker 4: that probably choose not to overly have a presence in
- 1:29:12Speaker 4: my life. But other than that, No.
- 1:29:15Speaker 3: Just before you came in as well, I was having
- 1:29:17Speaker 3: a bit of a laugh with Gordy. I know that
- 1:29:21Speaker 3: you mentioned before the situation with you know, with sponsors
- 1:29:26Speaker 3: and needing to make ends meet. How do you find
- 1:29:29Speaker 3: people who are using Peter's name to make a buck?
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: Because we found plain of our existence.
- 1:29:35Speaker 3: I found this on carsle so one and a half
- 1:29:37Speaker 3: million bucks for a VX Series two manual.
- 1:29:41Speaker 4: That I don't you don't have to give it to
- 1:29:42Speaker 4: me any closer. Do you know his car that way?
- 1:29:45Speaker 4: It's Roberts, our middle son's car, right, Peter bought it
- 1:29:48Speaker 4: for him, and so therefore Peter's name is on THEOIC
- 1:29:53Speaker 4: the invoice certificate. Interesting and it's it was a very
- 1:29:58Speaker 4: or card.
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: Well that's what I thought. It was a V six manual.
- 1:30:02Speaker 2: Dead in a V six manual exactly.
- 1:30:05Speaker 4: It was for Rob to get around it, and he
- 1:30:07Speaker 4: actually had a head on our driveway with Catherine's boyfriend.
- 1:30:12Speaker 4: He was coming up and Rob was going down and
- 1:30:15Speaker 4: they which was thank you for that, and yeah that
- 1:30:21Speaker 4: was that was somebody else we had living in that much.
- 1:30:23Speaker 4: And so we had to change our drive from being
- 1:30:26Speaker 4: a one way to a big loop so that that
- 1:30:28Speaker 4: didn't happen to busy. But that when Rob when they
- 1:30:31Speaker 4: got in touch with him and said that somebody wandered
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: that they wanted a million and a half. We just laughed.
- 1:30:36Speaker 4: Absolutely the number of times I have to authenticate and
- 1:30:40Speaker 4: go through and a lot of them have faired income.
- 1:30:43Speaker 4: But there are some there that one guy wanted me
- 1:30:46Speaker 4: to sign because often it's the glove box because I
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: do quite a few car shows and that sort of stuff.
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: That's and I get I signed cars. I personally think
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: it's taking turning down the car a bit, but people
- 1:30:59Speaker 4: still want me to sign. So it's a glove box lit.
- 1:31:01Speaker 4: So this guy gets in touch with me. He wants
- 1:31:02Speaker 4: me to sign the glob. Yeah, that's fine. So he
- 1:31:04Speaker 4: lives in Diamond Creek. Apparently gives me the address, see
- 1:31:07Speaker 4: you at ten o'clock on Saturday. So I go there
- 1:31:09Speaker 4: to the address ten o'clock Saturday morning, knock on the door.
- 1:31:13Speaker 4: Bloke's not there. The woman, the woman who lives in
- 1:31:16Speaker 4: so and so. Never heard of them. It's a beggar.
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: Pardon I was told to come here at two o'clock. No,
- 1:31:22Speaker 4: that's our name. We've lived here for years. And I'm
- 1:31:25Speaker 4: thinking I've walked out and I've got my texture in
- 1:31:27Speaker 4: my hand, and this bloke comes out from behind a tree.
- 1:31:31Speaker 4: I've just picked somebody's place to where he can hide.
- 1:31:34Speaker 3: Because he thinks that you'll think it's okay because it's
- 1:31:36Speaker 3: just down the road.
- 1:31:37Speaker 2: Sort of.
- 1:31:38Speaker 4: I believe it's sign it because if they've got to
- 1:31:42Speaker 4: sign on, whether it's a glove box, whether it's in
- 1:31:45Speaker 4: the engine, no matter what it is, it adds a
- 1:31:48Speaker 4: bit of a graceful the number of people who have
- 1:31:51Speaker 4: wanted to buy my car it was your car and
- 1:31:53Speaker 4: they wanted the extra insurance and it's going to cost
- 1:31:56Speaker 4: this much. I think, what for a car I drove
- 1:31:58Speaker 4: for two weeks.
- 1:32:00Speaker 3: You know.
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: It's funny Peter signature as well, because my mates went
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: to a car show, whether it be the Melbourne Car
- 1:32:09Speaker 1: Show whatever. I hadn't long been dating Alex at the time,
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: and my my rat bag mates went up to him
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: and go where Gordy's mates And he goes, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: he wants to get a Tarana, which is true, and
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: he's got he gets this poster and he goes, hang
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: on a second and he just goes to hear Gordy
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: forget Tarana's keep with the swift. And then I'd seen
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: him that day and he just looked at me and
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: pointed and I said, what he goes, You don't know
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: you you'll find out. My mates with this just couldn't
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: wait to come over and show me this post so good.
- 1:32:56Speaker 4: In terms of cars, which is really supposedly what this
- 1:33:00Speaker 4: is largely about. At one point in time, and I
- 1:33:03Speaker 4: hadn't been living down here in Melbourne all that long.
- 1:33:07Speaker 4: Peter was running in the Alpine Rally and I was
- 1:33:11Speaker 4: to drive up. He had been up the other day
- 1:33:13Speaker 4: or so beforehand. Well, Commodore was just about to be released.
- 1:33:17Speaker 4: It hadn't been released, but Peter had one of the
- 1:33:19Speaker 4: pre release cars as a test car.
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: And what year was this?
- 1:33:24Speaker 4: It has to be back in seventy years yep, six
- 1:33:27Speaker 4: seventy seven or something. So I've got his road car
- 1:33:31Speaker 4: and I'm driving up to meet them up there on
- 1:33:33Speaker 4: the on the Saturday, halfway through the rally. So I've
- 1:33:38Speaker 4: headed off in this Commodore and not taking the full
- 1:33:42Speaker 4: im peptop it, and I'm heading up towards Seymour and
- 1:33:45Speaker 4: these two young guys in the car behind me have
- 1:33:47Speaker 4: seen new car pre release, and so I'm coming up
- 1:33:52Speaker 4: right I'm a bumper, and they're looking and pulling right
- 1:33:54Speaker 4: inside and I'm looking and I'm freaking, and I'm thinking.
- 1:33:57Speaker 4: So I've put my foot down and taken off and
- 1:34:00Speaker 4: out from behind a tree sets of policeman with a thing.
- 1:34:04Speaker 2: Stop.
- 1:34:06Speaker 4: So I've pulled over, I've stopped, and he booked me
- 1:34:10Speaker 4: for doing one hundred and ten K.
- 1:34:13Speaker 1: And I said, well, what about it?
- 1:34:15Speaker 4: I say, for Haldway, what about the guys who were
- 1:34:19Speaker 4: hassling me? They didn't I know, we hadn't seen those.
- 1:34:22Speaker 4: So apparently the helicopter up there right sees a car speeding,
- 1:34:26Speaker 4: get calls down to the cop steps out behind a tree, stopped,
- 1:34:29Speaker 4: so I get a I get a speeding fight exceeding
- 1:34:35Speaker 4: one hundred K. Blah blah blah blah blah, and forget that,
- 1:34:38Speaker 4: put it, put it aside, go up up there for
- 1:34:41Speaker 4: the rally, come home come Monday morning. I thought, this
- 1:34:44Speaker 4: is pre computer days. Maybe it's wise that I actually
- 1:34:49Speaker 4: go in and get my license changed to a Victorian life,
- 1:34:54Speaker 4: which I did, because that's what people do when you're
- 1:34:57Speaker 4: moving a state. I now had a Victorian license in
- 1:35:01Speaker 4: the new South Wales. License never came out of my
- 1:35:06Speaker 4: handbag again, so I was very naughty. But it shows
- 1:35:10Speaker 4: the impact and these days you don't see that. But
- 1:35:12Speaker 4: back then, when a new car, a new model. It
- 1:35:15Speaker 4: was big interest and everybody wanted to see you.
- 1:35:17Speaker 3: Know well, I mean, Australian manufacturing is non exist dead now.
- 1:35:23Speaker 3: We film a lot of our content at lang Lang,
- 1:35:25Speaker 3: the old old moving ground. You've got some history there.
- 1:35:30Speaker 3: That place has been around for ages. It's sad to
- 1:35:33Speaker 3: me personally that that's going to disappear. Someday it's ready
- 1:35:36Speaker 3: on the market today housing it'll be.
- 1:35:40Speaker 2: Blocking units or something.
- 1:35:42Speaker 3: I just feel like, you know, Holden, while it was Australian,
- 1:35:46Speaker 3: it sort of worked well, but there was always that
- 1:35:48Speaker 3: American overlord. And then now that they've killed it, they've
- 1:35:52Speaker 3: taken all the history with them. No one knows where
- 1:35:54Speaker 3: any of these documents are, Like, it's all just gone.
- 1:35:57Speaker 3: And I just feel like it's just such a big
- 1:36:00Speaker 3: loss and such a shame.
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: I think that when I when I watched bath As too. Yeah,
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: it's sad.
- 1:36:05Speaker 4: It is the day Ford announced publicly that they were
- 1:36:08Speaker 4: stopping manufacturing. I'm looking after Peter's uncle Sandy because the
- 1:36:13Speaker 4: heath farm was next door to ours, and we see
- 1:36:15Speaker 4: look out the back window and see this fire down
- 1:36:18Speaker 4: the paddic. It's that So we've popped in the car
- 1:36:21Speaker 4: and driven down the side road and there's a Ford
- 1:36:24Speaker 4: and late model Forward in the gate on fire. The gate,
- 1:36:28Speaker 4: the posters burnt down, the cars burnt brand New Ford,
- 1:36:32Speaker 4: and they've chosen a Brock gateway to set fire to
- 1:36:38Speaker 4: their Forward because they're no longer manufactured. I've got this.
- 1:36:43Speaker 1: Photo of some weird protests.
- 1:36:46Speaker 4: Well why else would it happen? Yeah, exactly, exactly how
- 1:36:49Speaker 4: odd it was the weirdest thing. But there you go.
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: That is so interesting.
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: Before we wrap, do you have a Do you have
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: a favorite car of Peter's?
- 1:36:57Speaker 4: Do I have one?
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: Yeah? Sorry? Do you in my mind?
- 1:37:01Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:37:01Speaker 1: Yeah, not in ownership. I wish Do you have it here?
- 1:37:05Speaker 2: Can you sign it for us?
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: If you could sign the boot, my mate's going to
- 1:37:09Speaker 1: come out of the bushy diamond freakn pick it up.
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: But there are some amazing cars. Even there was a
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: beautiful Toodle Bannaro which he had when that Manara where
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: Scott re released. You know, I had big Manara written
- 1:37:23Speaker 1: up on the side. I think it was a four
- 1:37:24Speaker 1: two seven, I can't tell, But there was some amazing here.
- 1:37:28Speaker 4: The Manaro that he got was a particular paint job.
- 1:37:31Speaker 4: It was beautiful that I loved that car, but he
- 1:37:35Speaker 4: because he changed. He built so many cars. I'd get
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: them for brief time. But at one stage there was
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: a I had a beautiful Blue Statesman that I really
- 1:37:49Speaker 4: enjoyed driving, and a couple of years ago somebody had
- 1:37:52Speaker 4: rung up and knew that that was my car and
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: they were going to pay this amount of money and
- 1:37:56Speaker 4: that was going to cost them as much to ensure it. Seriously. Okay,
- 1:37:59Speaker 4: but that's fine, what story go. There was that one,
- 1:38:02Speaker 4: but a lot of his development cars he would actually
- 1:38:04Speaker 4: keep because for long well when I say keep, maybe
- 1:38:08Speaker 4: it last a couple of months. But he would do
- 1:38:10Speaker 4: the development and he'd go into work and on the
- 1:38:13Speaker 4: way and he'd be thinking all these things, Okay, guys,
- 1:38:15Speaker 4: what we did? You say, need to remove it? And
- 1:38:16Speaker 4: now we're going to do this. This isn't guys, And
- 1:38:19Speaker 4: Homer had come and that would go on, and so
- 1:38:22Speaker 4: of a nighttime come on with a test run. So
- 1:38:25Speaker 4: he'd do it in the dark, and because out near
- 1:38:27Speaker 4: the farm, out in the hills, there was a big properties,
- 1:38:30Speaker 4: no traffic, roads and that sort of stuff, and if
- 1:38:32Speaker 4: you did it on night it was safer because you
- 1:38:34Speaker 4: could see headlights, the glow from headlights so you could
- 1:38:36Speaker 4: do a test run. So it was always that the
- 1:38:41Speaker 4: test runs make sure that it's all going right and
- 1:38:44Speaker 4: so forth. So this constant changeover of cars was enormous.
- 1:38:49Speaker 4: But then when he was not with Holden and went
- 1:38:53Speaker 4: with Volvo, I got new Volvo cars on the right,
- 1:38:57Speaker 4: and then I had BMW and they'd change used to
- 1:39:00Speaker 4: be in W. I'd get a new little BMW every
- 1:39:02Speaker 4: months and that was pretty good. So despite the fact
- 1:39:06Speaker 4: that I good cars were wasted on me and his idea,
- 1:39:10Speaker 4: I actually had a lot of cars a short period
- 1:39:14Speaker 4: of time. And so that it surprises me when people
- 1:39:18Speaker 4: seem to think that because I sat my butt in
- 1:39:19Speaker 4: a car and drove it for a couple of months
- 1:39:21Speaker 4: that somehow it's worth more money. I'd understand if it
- 1:39:24Speaker 4: was him. But anything, the Brock name is just what
- 1:39:28Speaker 4: they It's just. And I deal with a guy in
- 1:39:34Speaker 4: South Australia who's a policeman who got in touch with
- 1:39:38Speaker 4: me because the car he was buying and he wasn't
- 1:39:42Speaker 4: one hundred percent sure about its sporacity. And when I
- 1:39:45Speaker 4: looked into him, no, mate, this is not a genuine article.
- 1:39:48Speaker 4: The build number has been stolen off a plate from
- 1:39:52Speaker 4: a car that was crashed, so he's taken it upon
- 1:39:54Speaker 4: himself to look after people find out more.
- 1:39:58Speaker 3: That was awesome, right, I love that because people get
- 1:40:01Speaker 3: scammed so often with authenticity stuff, you know, and for
- 1:40:05Speaker 3: someone who generally wants it as a collectible item, they're
- 1:40:08Speaker 3: willing to pay big money for it.
- 1:40:10Speaker 4: I'm not happy to see somebody lose money on good
- 1:40:13Speaker 4: money when they decent people aren't so And I feel
- 1:40:16Speaker 4: sorry sometimes for the people who want their car authenticated
- 1:40:19Speaker 4: because they bought it believing it was and they now
- 1:40:23Speaker 4: think they're going to get a million dollars for their car,
- 1:40:25Speaker 4: and mate, it's like anything else, it's going to be
- 1:40:27Speaker 4: worth eighty ninety thousand maybe dollars.
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: Yep.
- 1:40:33Speaker 4: Well, there are crooks in every no matter what industry,
- 1:40:37Speaker 4: there's always going to be somebody. And when Peter's cars,
- 1:40:40Speaker 4: he's road cars all that are around sell for over
- 1:40:44Speaker 4: a million dollars. He's race cars to over two million dollars.
- 1:40:49Speaker 4: You look and think when people think that we sort
- 1:40:53Speaker 4: of own the gut, yeah right.
- 1:40:54Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly, it's when it's a few steps down that
- 1:40:57Speaker 3: people are transacting.
- 1:41:00Speaker 1: Unbelievable. Well, thanks for stopping by. Just a quick chat.
- 1:41:05Speaker 2: It's been really appreciated.
- 1:41:07Speaker 4: Pleasant.
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess. I guess one thing I wanted to
- 1:41:12Speaker 1: kind of bring to the table was that everyone looks
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: at at Peter as you know, Peter perfect and all
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: that sort of stuff. But I think as we sort
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: of briefly mentioned that you are, you're fifty percent of
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: that You're the reason.
- 1:41:25Speaker 4: I didn't have any ability at any ability. I was
- 1:41:28Speaker 4: just home based. Yeah, you could, if you could create
- 1:41:31Speaker 4: a calm at home, you were doing well.
- 1:41:33Speaker 2: It was good.
- 1:41:33Speaker 3: Well.
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: It was always such a warm, lovely family unit. And
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: I just hope you realize that, you know.
- 1:41:41Speaker 4: I do. I look at if I look back at
- 1:41:43Speaker 4: it now, it was an amazing period of time in history.
- 1:41:47Speaker 4: It was an amazing period of time to have lived.
- 1:41:49Speaker 4: I was very fortunate, and you know, you're not going
- 1:41:52Speaker 4: to have that sort of stuff come around very often
- 1:41:55Speaker 4: in the world. So I know how fortunate I was.
- 1:41:59Speaker 4: And you know, the thing is that Peter and I
- 1:42:01Speaker 4: were a really good team until in the end where
- 1:42:05Speaker 4: he started doubting himself about everything. And that to me,
- 1:42:08Speaker 4: when I see young people doubt their own abilities, and
- 1:42:12Speaker 4: I know, you know, what has the potential to happen
- 1:42:16Speaker 4: is not for a minute that Peter did that deliberately
- 1:42:20Speaker 4: or in any way, shape or form. But a lot
- 1:42:23Speaker 4: of people who when they get down and depressed like that,
- 1:42:26Speaker 4: and we find it with our footballer, you know, our
- 1:42:29Speaker 4: ex coaches and captains and that sort of stuff, that
- 1:42:32Speaker 4: mental attitude. And as Peter said, you know, it's not
- 1:42:37Speaker 4: about the engineering of the car, it's not about your skill,
- 1:42:42Speaker 4: it's about your where your brain is that when you
- 1:42:44Speaker 4: get behind the wheel of the car. So the instant
- 1:42:46Speaker 4: you sit in that car, know that you're driving a lethal,
- 1:42:49Speaker 4: potential lethal weapon. Get your head in the right place
- 1:42:53Speaker 4: and that counts for far more than anything else. And
- 1:42:55Speaker 4: he's right, he was right, And it's you know, to me,
- 1:42:58Speaker 4: that's the sad thing that a lot of that's got
- 1:43:00Speaker 4: in history, but that's life. Can't change it.
