- 0:13Speaker 1: Recording by M. C Y. Black Feet Indune Stories by
- 0:17Speaker 1: George B. Grenelle. Chapter three, cut o'yeaes the blood Boy.
- 0:23Speaker 1: As the children whose ancestors came from Europe have stories
- 0:27Speaker 1: about the heroes who killed wicked and cruel monsters like
- 0:30Speaker 1: Jack the Giant Killer, for example, so the Indian children
- 0:34Speaker 1: hear stories about persons who had magical power and who
- 0:37Speaker 1: went about the world destroying those who treated cruelly or
- 0:41Speaker 1: killed the Indians of the camps. Such a hero was
- 0:44Speaker 1: cut oez and this is how he came to be
- 0:47Speaker 1: alive and to travel about from place to place, helping
- 0:51Speaker 1: the people in destroying their enemies. It was long long
- 0:55Speaker 1: ago down where two medicine and badger rivers come together.
- 1:00Speaker 1: An old man lived with his wife and three daughters.
- 1:03Speaker 1: One day there came to his camp a young man,
- 1:06Speaker 1: good looking, a good hunter, and brave. He stayed in
- 1:10Speaker 1: the camp for some time, and whenever he went hunting,
- 1:13Speaker 1: he killed game and brought in great loads of meat.
- 1:17Speaker 1: All this time the old man was watching him, for
- 1:20Speaker 1: he said in his heart, this seems a good young
- 1:23Speaker 1: man and a good hunter. Perhaps i'll give him my
- 1:26Speaker 1: daughters four wives, and then he'll stay here and help
- 1:30Speaker 1: me always. After a time, the old man decided to
- 1:33Speaker 1: do this, and he gave the young man his daughters.
- 1:36Speaker 1: And because these three were his only children, he gave
- 1:39Speaker 1: his son in law his dogs and all his property,
- 1:42Speaker 1: and for himself and his wife he kept only a
- 1:45Speaker 1: little lodge. The young man's wives tanned plenty of cowskins
- 1:50Speaker 1: and made a big, fine lodge, and in this the
- 1:52Speaker 1: son in law lived with his wives for some time.
- 1:55Speaker 1: After this, the son in law was very good and
- 1:58Speaker 1: kind to the old people. When he killed any animal,
- 2:01Speaker 1: he gave them part of the meat and gave them skins,
- 2:04Speaker 1: which his mother in law tanned for robes or for clothing.
- 2:08Speaker 1: As time went on, the son in law began to
- 2:10Speaker 1: grow stingy, and pretty soon he gave nothing to his
- 2:13Speaker 1: father in law's lodge, but kept everything for his own. Now,
- 2:18Speaker 1: the sun in law was a person of much mysterious power,
- 2:21Speaker 1: and he kept to the buffalo hidden under a big
- 2:23Speaker 1: log jam in the river. Whenever he needed food and
- 2:26Speaker 1: wished to kill anything. He would take his father in
- 2:29Speaker 1: lave with him to help. He would send the old
- 2:32Speaker 1: man out to stamp on the log jam and frighten
- 2:35Speaker 1: the buffalo, and when they ran out from under it,
- 2:39Speaker 1: the young man shoot one or two with his arrows,
- 2:42Speaker 1: never killing more than he needed. But often he gave
- 2:46Speaker 1: the old people nothing at all to eat. They were
- 2:49Speaker 1: hungry all the time, and at length they began to
- 2:52Speaker 1: grow thin and weak. One morning early the young man
- 2:56Speaker 1: asked his father in law to come and hunt with him.
- 2:59Speaker 1: They went to the log jam, and the old man
- 3:01Speaker 1: drove off the buffalo, and his son in law killed
- 3:03Speaker 1: a fat buffalo cow. Then he said to his father
- 3:06Speaker 1: in law, hurry back now to the camp, and tell
- 3:10Speaker 1: your daughters to come and carry home the meat, and
- 3:13Speaker 1: then you can have something to eat. The old man
- 3:16Speaker 1: set out for the camp, thinking as he walked along,
- 3:19Speaker 1: now at last my son in law has taken pity
- 3:22Speaker 1: on me. He would give me some of this meat.
- 3:25Speaker 1: When he returned with his daughters, they skinned the cow
- 3:29Speaker 1: and cut it up, and, carrying it, went home. The
- 3:33Speaker 1: young man had his wife's leave the meat at his
- 3:35Speaker 1: own lodge and told his father in law to go home.
- 3:39Speaker 1: He did not give them even a little piece of
- 3:41Speaker 1: the meat. The two older daughters gave their parents nothing
- 3:44Speaker 1: to eat, but sometimes the youngest one had pity on
- 3:48Speaker 1: them and took a piece of meat, and when she could,
- 3:51Speaker 1: threw it into the lodge to the old people. The
- 3:54Speaker 1: son in law had told his wives not to give
- 3:56Speaker 1: the old people anything to eat. Except for the good
- 4:00Speaker 1: heart of the youngest daughter, they would have died of hunger.
- 4:04Speaker 1: Another day, the sun in law rose early in the
- 4:06Speaker 1: morning and went over to the old man's lodge and
- 4:08Speaker 1: kicked against the poles, calling to him, get up now
- 4:12Speaker 1: and help me. I wanted to go and stamp on
- 4:15Speaker 1: the log jam to drive out the buffalo. When the
- 4:19Speaker 1: old man moved his feet on the jam and a
- 4:20Speaker 1: buffalo ran out, the son in law was not ready
- 4:23Speaker 1: for it, and he passed by him before he shot
- 4:26Speaker 1: the arrow, so he only wounded it. It ran away,
- 4:30Speaker 1: but at last it fell down and died. The old
- 4:33Speaker 1: man followed close after it, and as he ran along
- 4:37Speaker 1: he came to a place where a great clot of
- 4:39Speaker 1: blood had fallen from the buffalo's wound. When he came
- 4:42Speaker 1: to where this clot of blood was lying on the ground.
- 4:46Speaker 1: He stumbled and fell and spilled his arrows out of
- 4:48Speaker 1: his quiver, And while he was picking them up, he
- 4:51Speaker 1: picked up also the clot of blood and hid it
- 4:53Speaker 1: in his quiver. What are you picking up, called the
- 4:57Speaker 1: son in law. Nothing, replied the old man. I fell
- 5:02Speaker 1: down and spilled my arrows, and I am putting them back.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Old man, said the son in law. You are lazy
- 5:09Speaker 1: and useless. You no longer help me. Go back now
- 5:13Speaker 1: to the camp and tell your daughters to come down
- 5:15Speaker 1: here and help carrying in this meat. The old man
- 5:19Speaker 1: went to the camp and told his daughters of the
- 5:21Speaker 1: meat that their husband had killed, and they went down
- 5:24Speaker 1: to the killing ground. Then he went to his own
- 5:27Speaker 1: lodge and said to his wife, hurry, now, put the
- 5:30Speaker 1: stone kettle on the fire. I have brought home something
- 5:33Speaker 1: from the killing ah, said the old woman. Has our
- 5:37Speaker 1: son in law been generous and given us something nice
- 5:39Speaker 1: to eat? No, replied the old man, But hurry and
- 5:43Speaker 1: put the kettle on the fire. After a time, the
- 5:45Speaker 1: water began to boil, and the old man turned his
- 5:48Speaker 1: quiver upside down over the pot, and immediately there came
- 5:51Speaker 1: from it the sound of a child crying as if
- 5:54Speaker 1: it were being hurt. The old people both looked in
- 5:57Speaker 1: the kettle and there they saw little boy, and they
- 6:01Speaker 1: quickly took him out of the water. They were surprised
- 6:04Speaker 1: and did not know where the child had come from.
- 6:07Speaker 1: The old woman rubbed the child up and wound a
- 6:10Speaker 1: line about his roppings to keep them in place, making
- 6:13Speaker 1: a lashing for the child. Then they talked about it,
- 6:17Speaker 1: wondering what should be done with it. They thought that
- 6:20Speaker 1: if their son in law knew it was a boy,
- 6:22Speaker 1: he would kill it, so they determined to tell their
- 6:25Speaker 1: daughters that the baby was a girl, for then their
- 6:29Speaker 1: son in law would think that he was going to
- 6:31Speaker 1: have another wife, so he would be glad. They called
- 6:35Speaker 1: the child cut o ye's clot of blood. The son
- 6:40Speaker 1: in law and his wives came home bringing the meat,
- 6:43Speaker 1: and after a little time they heard the child in
- 6:46Speaker 1: the next lodge crying. The son in law said to
- 6:49Speaker 1: his youngest wife, go over to your mother's and see
- 6:52Speaker 1: whether that baby is a boy or a girl. If
- 6:55Speaker 1: it is a boy, tell your parents to kill it.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Soon the young woman came back and said to her husband,
- 7:02Speaker 1: it is a girl baby. You are to have another wife.
- 7:06Speaker 1: The son in law did not know whether to believe this,
- 7:09Speaker 1: and send his oldest wife to ask the same question.
- 7:13Speaker 1: When she came back and told him the same thing,
- 7:15Speaker 1: he believed that it was really a girl. Then he
- 7:18Speaker 1: was glad for he said to himself, now when this
- 7:22Speaker 1: child has grown up, I shall have another wife. He
- 7:26Speaker 1: said to his youngest wife, take some back fat and
- 7:29Speaker 1: pemmican over to your mother. She must be well fed
- 7:33Speaker 1: now that she has to nursed this child. On the
- 7:36Speaker 1: fourth day after he had been born, the child spoke
- 7:39Speaker 1: and said to his mother, hold me in turn to
- 7:42Speaker 1: each one of these large poles, and when I come
- 7:45Speaker 1: to the last one, I shall fall out of my
- 7:47Speaker 1: lashings and be grown up. The old woman did as
- 7:51Speaker 1: he had said, and as she held him to one
- 7:54Speaker 1: pole after another, he could be seen to grow, and finally,
- 7:59Speaker 1: when he was out the last pole, he was a man.
- 8:03Speaker 1: After cut o'yez had looked about the lodge, he put
- 8:06Speaker 1: his eye to a hole in the lodge covering and
- 8:09Speaker 1: looked out. Then he turned around and said to the
- 8:13Speaker 1: old people, how is it that in this lodge there's
- 8:16Speaker 1: nothing to eat? Over by the other lodge, see plenty
- 8:20Speaker 1: of food hanging up Hush, said the old woman, raising
- 8:24Speaker 1: her hand. You will be heard. Our son in law
- 8:27Speaker 1: leaves over there. He does not give us anything at
- 8:30Speaker 1: all to eat. Well, said the young man, where is
- 8:34Speaker 1: your episkun? Where do you kill buffalo? It's down by
- 8:39Speaker 1: the rivers. The old woman answered, We pound on it,
- 8:42Speaker 1: and the buffalo ran out. For some time they talked together,
- 8:47Speaker 1: and the old man told kut o'ye is how his
- 8:50Speaker 1: son in law had abused him. He said to the
- 8:53Speaker 1: young man, he has taken from me my bow and
- 8:56Speaker 1: my arrows, and has taken even my dogs. And now
- 9:00Speaker 1: for many days we have had nothing to eat, except
- 9:02Speaker 1: sometimes a small piece of meat that our daughter throws
- 9:05Speaker 1: to us. Father said, kut Oez, have you no arrows? No,
- 9:11Speaker 1: my son, replied the old man, But I still have
- 9:14Speaker 1: four stone arrows. Points. Go off, then, said kut Oez,
- 9:19Speaker 1: and get some wood. We will make a bow and
- 9:22Speaker 1: some arrows, and in the morning we will go down
- 9:25Speaker 1: to where the buffalo are and give something to eat.
- 9:30Speaker 1: Early in the morning, kut Oiz pushed the old man
- 9:33Speaker 1: and said, come get up now, and we will go
- 9:36Speaker 1: down and kill. When the buffalo come out, it was
- 9:40Speaker 1: still very early in the morning. When they reached the river,
- 9:43Speaker 1: the old man said, this is the place to stand
- 9:46Speaker 1: and shoot. I will go down and drive them out.
- 9:49Speaker 1: He went down and stamped on the log jam, and
- 9:51Speaker 1: presently a fat cow ran out and kut o Eez
- 9:55Speaker 1: killed it. Now, after these two had gone to the river,
- 9:59Speaker 1: the sun in law and went over to the old
- 10:01Speaker 1: man's lodge and knocked on the poles and called to
- 10:04Speaker 1: the old man to get up and help him kill.
- 10:07Speaker 1: The old woman called out to the son in law, saying,
- 10:10Speaker 1: your father in law has already gone down to the piskun.
- 10:14Speaker 1: This made the son in law angry, and he began
- 10:16Speaker 1: to talk badly to the old woman and to threaten
- 10:19Speaker 1: to harm her. Presently, he went on down to the
- 10:22Speaker 1: lock jam, and as he got near the place, he
- 10:24Speaker 1: saw the old man at work there, bending over skinning
- 10:27Speaker 1: a buffalo for cut o ye is. When he had
- 10:31Speaker 1: seen the son in law coming, had lain down on
- 10:33Speaker 1: the ground and hidden himself behind the cacas. When the
- 10:38Speaker 1: son in law had come pretty close to where the
- 10:40Speaker 1: buffalo lay, he said to his father in law, old man,
- 10:44Speaker 1: stand up and look all about you. Look carefully and well,
- 10:48Speaker 1: for it will be the last time that you will
- 10:50Speaker 1: ever see anything and why The son in law said this,
- 10:54Speaker 1: He took an arrow from his quiver. Cut O ee
- 10:57Speaker 1: ea Is spoke to the old man from residing place, said,
- 11:01Speaker 1: tell your son in law that he must take his
- 11:03Speaker 1: last look for that you were going to kill him.
- 11:06Speaker 1: Now the old man said this as he had been told. Ah,
- 11:11Speaker 1: said the son in law, you talk back to me.
- 11:14Speaker 1: That makes me still angrier at you. He put an
- 11:18Speaker 1: arrow on the string and shot at the old man,
- 11:20Speaker 1: but did not hit him. Cut O e Is said
- 11:22Speaker 1: to the old man, pick up that arrow and shoot
- 11:25Speaker 1: it back at him, and the old man did so.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Now they shot at each other four times, and then
- 11:32Speaker 1: the old man said to the cut o' eyes, I
- 11:35Speaker 1: am afraid. Now get up and help me. If you
- 11:37Speaker 1: do not, I think he will kill me. Then cut
- 11:41Speaker 1: o Ez rose to his feet and said to the
- 11:43Speaker 1: son in law here, what are you doing. I think
- 11:47Speaker 1: you have been treating these old man badly for a
- 11:49Speaker 1: long time. Why do you do it? Oh no, said
- 11:53Speaker 1: the old son in law, and his smiled cut o
- 11:55Speaker 1: ease in a friendly way, for he was afraid of him.
- 11:59Speaker 1: Oh no, No one thinks more of this old man
- 12:01Speaker 1: than I do. I have always been very good to him. No,
- 12:06Speaker 1: said Kotoiz, you are saying what is not true, and
- 12:10Speaker 1: I am going to kill you. Now. Cut Oyeze shot
- 12:14Speaker 1: the son in law four times, and he fell down
- 12:16Speaker 1: and died. Then the young man told his father to
- 12:19Speaker 1: go and bring down to him the daughters who had
- 12:21Speaker 1: acted badly toward him. The old man did so, and
- 12:25Speaker 1: cut Oyez punished them. Then he went up to the
- 12:29Speaker 1: lodge and said to the youngest woman, did you love
- 12:32Speaker 1: your husband? Yes, said the girl, I loved him. So
- 12:36Speaker 1: Kotoyiz punished her too, but not so badly as he
- 12:40Speaker 1: had the other daughters, because she had been kind to
- 12:42Speaker 1: her parents. To the old people, he said, go over
- 12:46Speaker 1: now to that lodge and live there. There is plenty
- 12:49Speaker 1: of food, and when that is gone, I will kill more.
- 12:52Speaker 1: As for me, I shall make a journey. Tell me
- 12:55Speaker 1: where there are any people in what direction shall I
- 12:58Speaker 1: go to find a camp? Well, said the old man.
- 13:02Speaker 1: Up here on two mets in Lodge Creek, there are
- 13:05Speaker 1: some people up where the piscin is. You know. Good
- 13:09Speaker 1: o' years followed up the streams to where the piscan was,
- 13:13Speaker 1: and there found many lodges of people in the center
- 13:16Speaker 1: of the camp was a big lodge and painted on
- 13:19Speaker 1: it the figure of a bear. He did not go
- 13:22Speaker 1: to this lodge, but went into a small lodge where
- 13:25Speaker 1: two old women lived. When he had sat down, they
- 13:28Speaker 1: put food before him, lean dry meat and some badly fat.
- 13:34Speaker 1: How is these grandmother's? He said, Here is a camp
- 13:38Speaker 1: with plenty of fat meat and back fat hanging up
- 13:41Speaker 1: to dry. Why do you not give me some of that? Hush?
- 13:45Speaker 1: Be careful, said the old woman. In that big lodge
- 13:49Speaker 1: over there lives a big bear and his wives and children.
- 13:53Speaker 1: He takes all the best food and leaves us nothing.
- 13:56Speaker 1: He is the chief of this place. Eline morning cut
- 14:00Speaker 1: o ye said to the old women, harness up your
- 14:04Speaker 1: dogs to the travelers now, and go over to the piskun,
- 14:08Speaker 1: and I will kill some fat meat for you. When
- 14:11Speaker 1: they got there, he killed the fat cow and helped
- 14:14Speaker 1: the old women to cut it up, and they took
- 14:16Speaker 1: it to the lodge. One of those old women said,
- 14:20Speaker 1: ah me, the bears will be sure to come. Why
- 14:24Speaker 1: do you say that, he asked. They said to him,
- 14:29Speaker 1: we shall be sorry to lose his back fat. Do
- 14:33Speaker 1: not fear, he said, No one shall take this back
- 14:36Speaker 1: fat from you. Now take all those best pieces and
- 14:39Speaker 1: hang them up so that those who live in the
- 14:41Speaker 1: bear lodge may see them. They did so pretty soon.
- 14:46Speaker 1: The old bear chief said to one of these children,
- 14:49Speaker 1: by this time, I think the people have finished killing.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Go out now and look about, see where the nicest
- 14:55Speaker 1: pieces are, and bring in some nice back fat. One
- 14:59Speaker 1: of the the young bears went out of the lodge
- 15:01Speaker 1: and stood up and looked about, and when it saw
- 15:05Speaker 1: this meat hanging by the old woman's lodge close by,
- 15:08Speaker 1: he went over toward it. Ah, said the old woman,
- 15:13Speaker 1: there are those bears. Do not be afraid, said kut Oyez.
- 15:18Speaker 1: The young bear went over to where the meat was
- 15:20Speaker 1: hanging and stood up and began to pull it down.
- 15:23Speaker 1: Cut o' eaves went out of the lodge and said, wait, wait,
- 15:27Speaker 1: what are you doing taking the old women's meat. The
- 15:32Speaker 1: young bear answered, my father told me that I should
- 15:35Speaker 1: go out and get this meat and bring it home
- 15:37Speaker 1: to him. Kut Oez hit the young bear over the
- 15:40Speaker 1: head with his stick, and he ran home crying. When
- 15:44Speaker 1: it had reached the lodge, it told what had happened,
- 15:47Speaker 1: and the father bear said, I will go over there myself.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Perhaps this person will hit me over the head. When
- 15:54Speaker 1: the old women saw the father and mother bear and
- 15:56Speaker 1: all the relations coming, they were afraid, but kut Owez
- 16:00Speaker 1: jumped out of the lodge and killed the bears one
- 16:03Speaker 1: after another, all except one little she bear, a very
- 16:07Speaker 1: small one, which got away. Well, said kut o Ez,
- 16:13Speaker 1: you may go and breed more bears. He told the
- 16:17Speaker 1: old woman to move over to the bear painted lodge,
- 16:20Speaker 1: and after this to live in it. It was theirs
- 16:24Speaker 1: to the old woman. Cut Oiz then said, now, grandmother's,
- 16:28Speaker 1: where are there any more people? I want to travel
- 16:31Speaker 1: about and see them. The old woman said, at the
- 16:35Speaker 1: point of rocks on some river, there is a camp.
- 16:38Speaker 1: There is a piskun there. So cut oe is set
- 16:41Speaker 1: off for that place. And when he came to the camp,
- 16:44Speaker 1: he went into an old woman's lodge. The old woman
- 16:47Speaker 1: gave him something to eat, a dish of bad food.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Why is this, grandmother asked kut Oez. Have you no
- 16:55Speaker 1: food better than this to give to a visitor down
- 16:58Speaker 1: there see a piskun. You must kill plenty of buffalo
- 17:01Speaker 1: and must have good food. Speak lower, said the old woman,
- 17:06Speaker 1: or you may be heard. We have no good food
- 17:09Speaker 1: because there is a great snake here who is the
- 17:12Speaker 1: chief of the camp. He takes all the best pieces.
- 17:15Speaker 1: He lives over there in that snake panted lodge. The
- 17:19Speaker 1: next morning, when the buffalo were led in, cut oe
- 17:23Speaker 1: Is killed one, and they took the back fat and
- 17:26Speaker 1: carried it to their lodge. Then cut Oi he said,
- 17:29Speaker 1: I think I will visit the snake person. He went
- 17:33Speaker 1: over and went into the lodge, and there he saw
- 17:35Speaker 1: many women that the snake person had taken to be
- 17:38Speaker 1: his wife's. The women were cooking some service berries. Cut
- 17:43Speaker 1: O eu Is picked up the dish and ate the
- 17:45Speaker 1: berries and threw the dish away. Then he went up
- 17:48Speaker 1: to the big snake, who was lying there in sleep,
- 17:52Speaker 1: and pricked him with his knife, saying, here, get up,
- 17:56Speaker 1: I have come to visit you. Let us smoke together.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Then the snake was angry, and he raised up his
- 18:02Speaker 1: head and began to rattle, and Kotoiz cut off his
- 18:05Speaker 1: head and cut him in pieces. He cut off the
- 18:08Speaker 1: heads of all the snakes, wives and children, all except
- 18:12Speaker 1: one little female snake, which got away by crawling into
- 18:15Speaker 1: a crack in the rocks. Oh well, said Kotoez. You
- 18:20Speaker 1: can go and breed snakes so there will be more.
- 18:24Speaker 1: The people will not be afraid of little snakes. Kut
- 18:27Speaker 1: Oez said to the old woman, now, grandmother, go into
- 18:31Speaker 1: the snake large and take it for your own and
- 18:34Speaker 1: everything that is in it. Then he said to them,
- 18:38Speaker 1: where are there some more people. They told him there
- 18:41Speaker 1: were some camps down the river, and some up in
- 18:43Speaker 1: the mountains. But they said, do not go up there.
- 18:47Speaker 1: It is bad because their leaves are seen, or koki
- 18:51Speaker 1: ween Sucker, he will kill you. Kut Oez was glad
- 18:56Speaker 1: to know that there was such a person, and he
- 18:58Speaker 1: went to the mountains. When he reached the place where
- 19:02Speaker 1: Windsucker lived, he looked into his mouth and saw there
- 19:05Speaker 1: many dead people. Some were skeletons, and some had only
- 19:09Speaker 1: just died. He went in, and there he saw a
- 19:12Speaker 1: fearful sight. The ground was white as snow with the
- 19:16Speaker 1: bones of those who had died. There are bodies with
- 19:19Speaker 1: flash on them, some who had died long before, and
- 19:23Speaker 1: some who were still living. As he looked about, he
- 19:26Speaker 1: saw hanging down above him a great thing that seemed
- 19:29Speaker 1: to move, to grow a little larger, and then to
- 19:31Speaker 1: grow a little smaller. Cut o e Is spoke to
- 19:35Speaker 1: one of the people who was alive and asked, what
- 19:37Speaker 1: is that hanging down above us. The person answered him,
- 19:42Speaker 1: that is Windsucker's heart. Then cut Oez spoke to all
- 19:46Speaker 1: the living and said to them, you who still draw
- 19:49Speaker 1: a little breath, try to move your heads in time
- 19:51Speaker 1: to the song that I shall sing. And you who
- 19:54Speaker 1: are still able to move, stand up on your feet
- 19:57Speaker 1: and dance. Take courage. Now we are going to dance
- 20:01Speaker 1: to the ghosts. Then cut o Eez tied his knife
- 20:04Speaker 1: point upward to the top of his head and began
- 20:07Speaker 1: to dance, singing the ghost song. And all the others
- 20:11Speaker 1: danced with him. And as he danced up and down,
- 20:14Speaker 1: he kept springing higher and higher into the air, and
- 20:17Speaker 1: the point of his knife cut Winsacker's heart and killed him.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Then cut o Eaz with his knife, cut a hole
- 20:24Speaker 1: between Winsocker's ribs, and he and all those who were
- 20:28Speaker 1: able to move crawled out through the hole. He said
- 20:32Speaker 1: to those who could still walk that they should go
- 20:34Speaker 1: and tell their people to come here to get the
- 20:36Speaker 1: ones still alive but unable to travel. To some of
- 20:40Speaker 1: these people that he had freed, he said, where are
- 20:43Speaker 1: there any other people? I want to visit all the people.
- 20:48Speaker 1: There is a camp to the westward up the river,
- 20:50Speaker 1: they replied, but you must not take the left hand
- 20:53Speaker 1: trail going up, because on that trail leaves a woman
- 20:56Speaker 1: who invites men to wrestle with her and then kills them.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Avoid her. Now, really, this was what kut Oez was
- 21:04Speaker 1: looking for. This was what he was doing in the world,
- 21:07Speaker 1: trying to kill off all the bad things. He asked
- 21:10Speaker 1: these people just where this woman lived and how it
- 21:13Speaker 1: was best for him to go, so that he should
- 21:16Speaker 1: not meet her. He did this because he did not
- 21:19Speaker 1: wish the people to know that he was going where
- 21:21Speaker 1: she was. He started, and after he had traveled some time,
- 21:25Speaker 1: he saw a woman standing not far from the trail.
- 21:28Speaker 1: She called to him, saying, come here, young man, come here,
- 21:32Speaker 1: I want to wrestle with you. No, he replied, I
- 21:36Speaker 1: am in a hurry. I cannot sob The woman called again, no, no,
- 21:42Speaker 1: do not go on, come now and wrestle once with me.
- 21:46Speaker 1: After she had called him the fourth time, kot o
- 21:49Speaker 1: Ez went to her. Now, on the ground where this
- 21:52Speaker 1: women wrestled with people, she had placed many sharp, broken
- 21:56Speaker 1: flint stones, partly hiding them by the grass. The two
- 22:00Speaker 1: seized to each other and began to whistle over these
- 22:03Speaker 1: sharp stones. But cut o E's looked at the ground
- 22:05Speaker 1: and did not step on them. He watched his chance
- 22:09Speaker 1: and gave the woman a quick wrench and threw her
- 22:12Speaker 1: down a large sharp flint, which cut her in two,
- 22:16Speaker 1: and the parts of her body fell asunder cut. O
- 22:19Speaker 1: Eas then went on and after a time came to
- 22:21Speaker 1: where a woman had made a place for sliding down hill.
- 22:25Speaker 1: At the far end of it. She had fixed a
- 22:27Speaker 1: rope which when she raised it would trip people up,
- 22:31Speaker 1: and when they were tripped, they fell over a high
- 22:33Speaker 1: cliff into a deep water, where a great fish ate them.
- 22:38Speaker 1: When this woman suckued o'e's coming, she cried out to him,
- 22:42Speaker 1: come over here, young man, and slide with me. No,
- 22:46Speaker 1: he replied, I am in a hurry. I cannot wait.
- 22:49Speaker 1: She kept calling to him, and when she had called
- 22:52Speaker 1: him the fourth time, he went over where she was
- 22:55Speaker 1: to slide with her. This lighting said the woman is
- 22:59Speaker 1: very good. Ah, yes, said cut o ez, I will
- 23:03Speaker 1: look at it. As he went near the place, he
- 23:07Speaker 1: looked carefully and saw the hidden rope. He began to slide,
- 23:11Speaker 1: and holding his knife in his hand, when he reached
- 23:14Speaker 1: the rope, he cut it just as the woman raised it.
- 23:16Speaker 1: And pulled on it, and the woman fell over backward
- 23:19Speaker 1: into the water and was eaten up by the big fish.
- 23:23Speaker 1: From here he went on again, and after a time
- 23:27Speaker 1: he came to a big camp. A man eater was
- 23:29Speaker 1: the chief of this place. Before cut O Ez went
- 23:33Speaker 1: to the chief's lodge, he looked about and saw little
- 23:36Speaker 1: girl and called her to him and said, child, I'm
- 23:40Speaker 1: going to that lodge to let that man eater kill
- 23:43Speaker 1: and eat me. Therefore, be on the watch, and if
- 23:47Speaker 1: you can get hold of one of my bones, take
- 23:49Speaker 1: it out and call all the dogs to you. And
- 23:52Speaker 1: when they had come to you, throw down the bone
- 23:54Speaker 1: and said, cut o e eas, the dogs are eating
- 23:57Speaker 1: your bones. Then cut O Ez entered the lodge, and
- 24:01Speaker 1: when the man nitter saw him, he called out Oki oki,
- 24:06Speaker 1: welcome and welcome, and seemed glad to see him, for
- 24:09Speaker 1: he was a faty young man. The man eater took
- 24:13Speaker 1: a knife and walked up to cut O Ears and
- 24:15Speaker 1: cut his throat and put him to a great stone
- 24:18Speaker 1: pot to cook. When the meat was cooked, he pulled
- 24:22Speaker 1: the kettle from the fire and ate the body lian
- 24:25Speaker 1: by limb until it was all eaten. After that, the
- 24:29Speaker 1: little girl who was watching, came into the lodge and said,
- 24:32Speaker 1: pity me, man eitter. My mother is hungry and asks
- 24:36Speaker 1: you for those bones. The old man gathered them together
- 24:40Speaker 1: and handed them to her, and she took them out
- 24:43Speaker 1: of the lodge. When she had gone a little way,
- 24:46Speaker 1: he called all the dogs to her and threw down
- 24:48Speaker 1: the bones to the dogs, crying out, look out, cut
- 24:51Speaker 1: o yeas the dogs are eating you. And when she
- 24:54Speaker 1: said that, cut oy arose from the pile of bones again.
- 24:58Speaker 1: He went into the lodge. And when the man eater
- 25:01Speaker 1: saw him, he cried out, how how how the fat
- 25:05Speaker 1: young man had survived, and he seemed surprised. Again, he
- 25:10Speaker 1: took his knife and cut the throat of cut O
- 25:12Speaker 1: Ease and threw him into the kettle. Again. When the
- 25:15Speaker 1: meat was cooked, he ate it, And when the little
- 25:18Speaker 1: girl asked for the bones again, he gave them to her.
- 25:21Speaker 1: She took them out and threw them to the dogs, crying,
- 25:24Speaker 1: cut O Ease, the dogs are eating you. And again
- 25:28Speaker 1: cut O Ease arose from the bones. When the man
- 25:31Speaker 1: eater had cooked him four times, cut O Ease again
- 25:34Speaker 1: went into the lodge, and, seizing the man eater, he
- 25:38Speaker 1: threw him into the boiling kettle, and his wives and
- 25:41Speaker 1: all his children emboiled them to death. The man eater
- 25:46Speaker 1: was the seventh and less of the bad things to
- 25:48Speaker 1: be destroyed by cut O eas And of Chapter three
