- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The Propers of the Day According to the Roman Missal before 1955. The Feast of Saint Martha, July 29 in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:20After having celebrated on the twenty second of this month, the feast of Saint Mary Magdalene, we honor today Martha her sister. The daughter of noble and rich parents she lived at Bethany two miles from Jerusalem. Jesus, says Saint John, loved Martha and her sister Mary and Lazarus.
- 0:46Wherefore he preferred to dwell at their house when he was in Judea. There he spent the last days which preceded his death. Martha, who was the elder, therefore often had the honor of being the hostess of Jesus, the divine spouse to whom she had consecrated her virginity. While busy with serving Jesus she requested him to bid Mary help her and Jesus without blaming her for ministering to his wants made her understand that certain souls called by God choose a still better part since they commence on earth what all shall do in heaven. Active life with all its labors and fatigues endured for the sake of Christ whom we serve in our neighbor is very meritorious.
- 1:48Happy, however, is the home where Mary causes the complaint of Martha and refuses to take away from prayer a life which ordinary occupations might appear to claim. God is indeed the author of all grace and wishes to be recognized as such and contemplative life which puts souls in direct contact with Him assures their personal sanctification more fully, and obtains more efficaciously the graces by which a Christian apostleship becomes fruitful. Let us esteem at its just value the position that Jesus reserves to Mary. And if he calls us to share in Martha's solicitude, let us endeavor, like the saints, to make up by the spirit of prayer for what is wanting in active life. Commemorated today are Saints Felix Simplicius, Faustinus, and Beatrice.
- 3:00The holy pontiff Felix the second is a pope of the fourth century. He was martyred in Tuscany in the time of the Arians. Simplicius and Faustinus, denounced as Christians to the persecutors, were put to death at Rome under Diocletian in the year of our Lord 03/2003. Beatrice, their sister, was arrested and strangled in prison. Leo II placed the relics of these three murders in a church at Rome dedicated in their names.
- 3:44In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. The Introit. Thou hast loved justice and hated iniquity. Therefore, God thy God hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
- 4:07Joyful are the thoughts that well up from my heart, A king's honor for my theme. Glory be to the father and to the son and to the holy ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages. Amen. Thou hast loved justice, and hated iniquity: therefore God thy God hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. The Collect.
- 4:44Let us pray. Hear us, O God, our Saviour, and as we rejoice in the feast of blessed Martha, thy Virgin, so we may learn a filial devotion to thee. A commemoration of saints Felix the second and companion martyrs. Grant we beseech thee, O Lord, that as thy Christian people joyfully unite in celebrating the temporal solemnity of thy holy martyrs, Felix, Simplicius, Faustinus, and Beatrice, so they may enjoy it in eternity, and may effectually attain to what they celebrate in desire, through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
- 5:48A lesson from the second letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians. Brethren, he who boasts should make his boast in the Lord. It is the man whom God accredits, not the man who takes credit to himself that proves himself to be true metal. If you would only bear with my vanity for a little, pray. Be patient with me.
- 6:20After all, my jealousy on your behalf is the jealousy of God himself. I have betrothed you to Christ so that no other but he should claim you, his bride without spot. The gradual, with thy comeliness and thy beauty, set out, proceed prosperously, and take thy crown because of truth and meekness and justice, and thy right hand shall conduct thee wonderfully. Alleluia. Alleluia.
- 7:01After her shall virgins be brought to the king. They shall be brought with gladness and rejoicing. Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke. At that time in one of the villages which Jesus entered, a woman called Martha entertained him in her house.
- 7:26She had a sister called Mary and Mary took her place at the Lord's feet and listened to his words. Martha was distracted by waiting on many needs So she came to his side and asked, Lord, art thou content that my sister should leave me to do the serving alone? Come, bid her help me. Jesus answered her, Martha, Martha, how many cares and troubles thou hast? But only one thing is necessary, and Mary has chosen for herself the best part of all, that which shall never be taken away from her.
- 8:18The Offertory. The daughters of kings do thee honor. At thy right hand stands the queen in a vesture of gold, all hung about with embroidery. The secret, may this sacrifice of thy dedicated people be accepted by thee, O Lord, in honor of thy saints, to whose merits we attribute the help afforded us in tribulation. A commemoration of Saints Felix II and companion martyrs.
- 8:57We bring thee offerings, O Lord, in commemoration of thy holy martyrs Felix, Simplicius, Faustinus, and Beatrice, which we keep by celebrating these heavenly mysteries, may obtain for us thy merciful forgiveness through our Lord Jesus Christ Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface: Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O holy Lord, father almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify.
