- 0:00[SPEAKER_01]: women's safety needs every component and we can't just have a product and we can't just have education and we can't just have politics and we can't just write we need an overarching solution to truly see this epidemic change.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_04]: Welcome to the Beat Tell You See at Podcast where we talk about taking messy action knowing that perfect is boring.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_04]: I'm also Logan, prize instructor, and fit this business coach.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_04]: I've trained thousands of people around the world, and the number one thing I see stopping people from achieving anything is self-doubt.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_04]: My friends, action brings clarity.
- 0:38[SPEAKER_04]: and it's the antidote to fear.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_04]: Each week my guess will bring bold, executable, intrinsic, and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and be it till you see it.
- 0:50[SPEAKER_03]: It's a practice, not a perfect, let's get started.
- 0:57[SPEAKER_04]: All right, be it babe.
- 0:58[SPEAKER_04]: So today's guest is someone who's really cool.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_04]: She's been on my radar for quite some time and I've been watching what she's doing and then I've got to see what she was doing.
- 1:07[SPEAKER_04]: I was like, this is really freaking cool.
- 1:09[SPEAKER_04]: And then Brad went to this thing and he met her.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_04]: And I was like, yeah, that's what when I showed you on on my Instagram.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_04]: And it's because I'm obsessed with lipstick and then someone made some lipstick that can actually help save your life.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_04]: So today's episode is going to talk about not in detail.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_04]: I'm not weird.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_04]: There's not anything that's like full details of things.
- 1:26[SPEAKER_04]: But if you have experienced gender-based violence and that is a touch of subject for you, please guard your heart for this episode.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_04]: But I really do hope as many of you can listen to it because we're going to talk about ways for vintage.
- 1:36[SPEAKER_04]: And we're going to talk with a woman who has founded the SOS Cosmetics Company, which is a product-based company with tech that can help save your life.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_04]: And so I'm really, really excited.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_04]: Joy Hoover is our guest.
- 1:46[SPEAKER_04]: And so here,
- 1:48[SPEAKER_04]: is a great interview with some really, really amazing, thoughtful, full of love, full of joy, full of excitement, full of how communities can come together and how you can meet integral in preventing gender-based violence.
- 1:58[SPEAKER_04]: So here we go, enjoy Hoover.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_04]: All right, we obey.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_04]: This is a first.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_04]: We have a neighbor on the podcast, and no, she's not in my-
- 2:06[SPEAKER_04]: Which would have been something that I planned ahead, but you know what, or both entrepreneurs were flying by the seat of our pants.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_04]: So Joy Hoover is our guest today.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_04]: I'm super excited.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_04]: I'm so excited to get to know you as a neighbor, but also like all that you're doing, you're quite a badass.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_04]: So can you tell everyone who you are and what you're rocking at?
- 2:23[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 2:24[SPEAKER_01]: I'm happy to be here.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_01]: And I love that I met your husband randomly, like at a conference.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_01]: And then we're like, oh, we're moving in for a year.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_01]: And you're like, okay, we're down those streets.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_02]: It's really funny how the world works, right?
- 2:37[SPEAKER_01]: The universe loves to combat, you know, unite the right people.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, I'm drawing over, I've been in Vegas for over fifteen years, working in women's safety and anti-trafficking and anti-gender based violence and really my passion just comes from like, I want women to be safe.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_01]: And so I, you know, built a nonprofit cupcake girls for twelve years and then kind of pivoted into this
- 3:00[SPEAKER_01]: Consumer products goods like people are like, why did you create a product?
- 3:03[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, I don't quite know, but no, I know.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_01]: And so yes, I'm so happy to be able to bring a product to market that is a lipstick that could save your life with tech and test strips.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, there's probably not one woman that's listening to this podcast that hasn't at one point or not feared for their safety.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_01]: worried about their safety or actually experience something traumatic.
- 3:25[SPEAKER_01]: And so my goal is to shift that with drunk girl bathroom energy and help us work together to be the really where the ones we've been waiting for.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_01]: So I mean like
- 3:39[SPEAKER_04]: First of all, it's really cool.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_04]: So I have the product here because I was like, this is the coolest thing.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I knew you were talking about it.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_04]: I've been watching you before you met.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_04]: I showed Brad some sort of TV show you were on.
- 3:50[SPEAKER_04]: I was like, babe, look at this because like, so I'm just like really into it.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_04]: But also like, I just have to, I want to like go back to like, you've been in the biggest fifteen years.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_04]: What you've been working in is an industry that is not, you know, bright shiny roses and flowers and
- 4:06[SPEAKER_04]: Lots of misinformation, lots of misleading information.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_04]: That kind of stuff doesn't actually mean the right people get helped.
- 4:11[SPEAKER_04]: And so I guess like, and then you want to just start a product and as a someone who also has a product, it is like the hardest fucking thing you'll ever do.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_04]: And anytime someone's like, oh, I was thinking doing flashcards.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_04]: I'm like, okay, you can have the printer's number.
- 4:23[SPEAKER_04]: Like, I don't care.
- 4:24[SPEAKER_04]: Good luck when you find out.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_04]: how many hours behind the scenes, how much it costs to hit print, how like all that stuff you like me, good luck to you.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_04]: So how did you go from like something that was so hard probably daily to then another hard?
- 4:46[SPEAKER_01]: I know, I was talking to an entrepreneur yesterday.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, I think we're just like a glutton for punishment of actual like just like organized chaos, but hopefully it's somewhat organized.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_01]: But yeah, I think, you know, in, let's see, we're coming up on April, tenth, twenty, twenty, five.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_01]: So, twelve years ago on April, tenth, twenty, thirteen, we had a newborn baby.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_01]: Our daughter was eight days old and we
- 5:10[SPEAKER_01]: got a phone call.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_01]: And that call really changed the trajectory of our life because on the end of that call was someone who said, hey, someone two people were shot at your parents' property.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_01]: This is my husband, both my husband and I on the call.
- 5:25[SPEAKER_01]: And they don't know where your dad is.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_01]: And we're literally at Town Square with our eight-day old newborn baby picking out clothing for her newborn session.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_01]: And I feel like like our life flash before our eyes, from like what happened before that, to what happened after that.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_01]: And here we are.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_01]: We're in the middle of this, you know, very, very intense work.
- 5:47[SPEAKER_01]: We're the NAMOMOMOM phone call for so many of our clients.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_01]: And we can't
- 5:52[SPEAKER_01]: help.
- 5:52[SPEAKER_01]: And what ended up happening is that his mom, my mother-in-law's final words weren't a nine-month one phone call.
- 5:58[SPEAKER_01]: And that phone call was literally help my husband just shot my son and he's coming after me.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_01]: And on the end of that call was a gunshot.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_01]: And so overnight,
- 6:12[SPEAKER_01]: within seconds we lose his brother, his mom, and then his dad, he took his own life.
- 6:18[SPEAKER_01]: And so here we are, we fly across the country with our baby, and it's just like, what do we do now?
- 6:24[SPEAKER_01]: And so what we did was a lot of healing, a lot of therapy, and we've had an amazing therapist for the last thirteen years.
- 6:32[SPEAKER_01]: And as we started healing our own stories and continuing to show up for thousands of over ten thousand survivors that we were able to help with resources from you know medical and dental to new housing to you know moving them across country away from you know abusers and pimps and
- 6:49[SPEAKER_01]: What we started realizing is, this is a systemic problem.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_01]: We know that, you know, we know it's from systemic issues and from, you know, you can talk about all the things.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_01]: But the end of the day, one of the biggest issues was there was nothing preventing this.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 7:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's nothing that was an easy product.
- 7:07[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we have, you know, there's pepper spray.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_01]: There's, you know, but what I started learning from so many of our clients was, we don't carry that because we're afraid we're going to like spray our own eyes with pepper spray or, you know, like, whatever.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_01]: Like they're hard to be something easy, like easy to use that could actually help you in a tough situation.
- 7:28[SPEAKER_01]: And really, that's when I came up with SOS.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's really I live in Los Angeles for a long time and so when people like when we moved to Vegas, I said, I want to live where there's like not an HIV and they're like, oh, not very safe over there and I was like, wait, what's not safe to you?
- 7:48[SPEAKER_04]: I live across here from the federal building in Los Angeles like there's a protest every Saturday.
- 7:52[SPEAKER_04]: I got I got my same homeless people for the same five years so that we know we do things giving together.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_04]: So what will we talk in about safety?
- 7:59[SPEAKER_04]: Why?
- 7:59[SPEAKER_04]: Because it's very different depending on like what you've experienced and so
- 8:04[SPEAKER_04]: But one thing that, like, I remember when I was single in LA was just the amount of steps you go through.
- 8:11[SPEAKER_04]: You're like, I'll meet you there.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_04]: No, don't pick me out.
- 8:14[SPEAKER_04]: Like, and then my girlfriend had pepper spray.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_04]: She got scared because she thought was following her.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_04]: She sprayed it.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_04]: The wind blew it back into her eyes.
- 8:22[SPEAKER_04]: And the guy just walked right by her.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_04]: So like, we can laugh because she wasn't in danger, but like, thank God she wasn't in danger, but like, it's true.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_04]: Like, you know, like that kind of stuff.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_04]: So, so, but I always am like, we tell them they can be empowered.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_04]: We tell them to like do all these different things.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_04]: And then then at the day, they're still putting their keys to their fingers when they're walking to their car.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_04]: And so like, so, you know,
- 8:46[SPEAKER_04]: Beauty product lines have been around.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_04]: So thankfully, there's that.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_04]: But then you're trying to create a product that is helping women on the date, make sure that they're not being drugged.
- 8:57[SPEAKER_04]: Is that correct?
- 8:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the goal is anywhere.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_01]: But like, you know, the original component was the tester.
- 9:03[SPEAKER_01]: It was this idea of how can we test drinks.
- 9:06[SPEAKER_01]: We know one and two women have experienced drinks biking.
- 9:08[SPEAKER_01]: We know this happens from, you know, sexual violence, domestic violence into trafficking.
- 9:14[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, that seems like a semi-easy solution of, like, we gotta come up with this test trip and we can, like, put it hide it in this lipstick, like, that seems semi-easy.
- 9:23[SPEAKER_01]: And that part actually was fairly easy, or...
- 9:27[SPEAKER_01]: The funny part was, again, I'm not like, I'm not a scientist and I'm not an engineer.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_01]: And so I had to look for, right, higher scientist and engineer to join my team.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_01]: And so what I did was I looked at there was one product that had tried to do it a market six years ago.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_01]: It won't feel like a nail polish that you like dip your finger in it changes color.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_01]: Cool.
- 9:46[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, interestingly enough, that product never did go to market, but what happened was that we found their patent when my attorney had first applied for ours.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_01]: And so I found that guy that signed isn't linked in, pursued him for eight months until he would take a call with me.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_01]: And he finally took a call in May of twenty twenty two.
- 10:02[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, hey,
- 10:05[SPEAKER_01]: I want to know how you did this and I want to know if you want to work with me to make my lipstick and he's like, he basically was just like, do you want to do like the lipstick changing color?
- 10:14[SPEAKER_01]: If you like put it on and it's drugged and I'm like, no, he's like, okay, then I'll take a meeting with you.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, okay, sounds good.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_01]: So anyways, that guy is the one who ended up bringing the head engineer from that company to the meeting and I hired them to develop my product.
- 10:28[SPEAKER_01]: and we did from everything and it was funny because they were over there in New North Carolina and so I had met them but when we launched the actual product they flew in and they were when they talked about they're like you know usually we're like testing things that are more like you know your everyday type things it's not that often we have a whole bunch of roofies in the you know and all this alcohol in the place that we're like testing all these things like
- 10:54[SPEAKER_04]: I know like the warnings like please don't drink the things in the fridge today, everyone, please don't do it.
- 10:58[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 10:59[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 11:00[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 11:01[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_04]: So okay.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_04]: So so many takeaways from this because like one, it's easy for us to get stuck on like the component we don't know, you know, like the part of the thing we don't know.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_04]: to your perseverance to track this guy down to get him to answer like okay we got to make sure you are like on every project that things that will change the world and then three I just want to highlight the dates of things twenty twenty two that is three years ago that we're you know like this has been part of like your
- 11:31[SPEAKER_04]: creation for how many years have you been working on this product because I think like by the time I see it I'm like oh this is like you know last year or whatever whenever the show but that's not when you started it that's not when the idea came that's not when you started putting time money investments you know time away from your family absolutely yeah so I basically I hired an attorney in and put on a credit card to put the first ten thousand dollars on to
- 11:56[SPEAKER_01]: apply for a patent for this idea.
- 11:59[SPEAKER_01]: Unlike October, like second, and then October, twenty seven, which would have been my mother-in-law's seven-year-th birthday.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_01]: So we kind of honored her by bringing a hundred people into our backyard and basically showing them the world's ugliest PowerPoint.
- 12:13[SPEAKER_01]: basically show the like show the concept the idea is this is twenty twenty this is twenty twenty one one okay okay yeah yeah and so I mean because we knew we would need money and we needed support to do this like yeah I mean you know I'm a person I'm I'm a big
- 12:29[SPEAKER_01]: component of like of everything I do, I feel like it's hustle.
- 12:32[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but without the right resources and the right, without the right community around you, hustle doesn't matter, right?
- 12:39[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that's an important thing is like, you have to know who's on your side.
- 12:43[SPEAKER_01]: You have to know who's in your, you know, who's in your back, you know, literal backyard.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_01]: We literally took all the furniture from our inside of our house, put it on the outside of our house.
- 12:53[SPEAKER_01]: Like, even our TV off the wall and like did this whole thing.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_01]: And basically said, we're going to do this who can support who wants to support who wants to invest.
- 13:02[SPEAKER_01]: And right away, we raised like that night, we raised twenty five thousand dollars.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_01]: And all these people were like, please do this.
- 13:08[SPEAKER_01]: Like, this is we need
- 13:10[SPEAKER_01]: We need this, right?
- 13:11[SPEAKER_04]: And I think what it's really cool about it, because when, you know, when I got to see it and everything, we're talking about like all the different women who, you know, today in a world where like you're not going in the office all the time, you are having meetings.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, real estate agents are meeting people at at homes alone, you know, like might what I was a place instructor.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_04]: I rent a rented space.
- 13:34[SPEAKER_04]: And so a lot of people have this miss and like, Miss got to thought, like, oh, if it's a brick and mortar, like nothing bad's going to happen to me, but I was going to teach a guy at five, thirty in the morning.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_04]: It's dark outside, no way.
- 13:44[SPEAKER_04]: No one is walking by this brick and mortar.
- 13:49[SPEAKER_04]: I'm aware of how the brick and mortar set up.
- 13:51[SPEAKER_04]: I'm aware that they're staircases, like I'm aware of these things.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_04]: And so I had this guy who wanted a session, I said, with all due respect.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_04]: on the need your full name.
- 13:59[SPEAKER_04]: So that I can look you up because I am going to meet you alone at five, thirty in the morning in Los Angeles.
- 14:05[SPEAKER_04]: And to his credit, he was so cool about it.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_04]: He goes, of course, he's like, I have a daughter.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_04]: I would expect nothing.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_04]: I would want her to do the same thing.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_04]: He's like, here's my LinkedIn.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_04]: There's all the things.
- 14:17[SPEAKER_04]: And I could see like, okay, he legitimately is someone who lives in New York.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_04]: He lives in what I had all the things.
- 14:22[SPEAKER_04]: So he came in the door.
- 14:23[SPEAKER_04]: I wasn't open in the door for a random dude.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_04]: I was like, you know, so like, I was really grateful, but I was thinking with this, it's like, oh, how nice.
- 14:31[SPEAKER_04]: Like, to just have the opportunity to know that you are taking care of yourself in another level of security.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_04]: So you can take actions you want to take.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_04]: Like, I don't want, and I'm sure you don't want this for your kids.
- 14:42[SPEAKER_04]: Like, I don't want any of my girlfriends to ever live in fear.
- 14:45[SPEAKER_04]: I don't want them to make it.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I'm not going to go take that meeting because I'm going to be alone.
- 14:49[SPEAKER_04]: You know, like you, so I feel like this product is also just empowering women to actually be able to do more of the things they want to do.
- 14:55[SPEAKER_01]: a hundred percent and that's really why we add the tech component because while casting your drink is great what we started learning more and more and I I had my own experience with it but I started kind of getting other women's experience who would experience drink spiking or you know felt like maybe something was off
- 15:10[SPEAKER_01]: And really my question was, how quick could you have gotten out of there?
- 15:14[SPEAKER_01]: You know, the statistics say around thirteen minutes, these drugs metabolize in your system.
- 15:19[SPEAKER_01]: And then you're literally blacked out sometimes for twenty four hours.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_01]: And so what we started identifying was how could they call for help immediately?
- 15:28[SPEAKER_01]: Sure, they might probably have their phone on them, but could they, you know,
- 15:32[SPEAKER_01]: Open it up and, you know, make the call.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_01]: Whereas with SOS, we built a fully customized app that connects with the lipstick.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_01]: So you can basically set it up to push it once twice or three times and it can do all different things from sound a lot alarm to send a text or your location to even, you know, send an actual phone call.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_01]: Everything's all the messages and everything are customizable.
- 15:54[SPEAKER_01]: But the final thing is to priority dispatch authorities to your location.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_01]: And we know because we know that calling nine one one, sometimes it's between life or death and you're put on hold.
- 16:04[SPEAKER_01]: We we experience a lot with clients, right?
- 16:07[SPEAKER_01]: And so we're like, we have to have something that's going to no matter what, know their location immediately and priority dispatch, like put their emergency the top of the list.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_01]: Which by the way saved our house like last year, which like is a whole other thing.
- 16:22[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my God.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 16:24[SPEAKER_01]: Literally like my house was on hold with nine one one and I pushed the lipstick and they have our location and within like five minutes two fire trucks come to the house run and find the find the fire put it out and everything and the captain comes out and he's like it's so good.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_01]: We came when we did had we come about ten to fifteen minutes later.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_01]: We wouldn't even have been able to save the bones of your house.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 16:47[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, I haven't experienced hold.
- 16:51[SPEAKER_04]: Remember, back to that time in LA.
- 16:53[SPEAKER_04]: So you guys really live literally across the street from the federal building.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_04]: There was a strip of like land between like the parking lot and the sidewalk.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_04]: So like, you know, how like when you park a car, there's like a little cement things like don't go in further with this car.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_04]: So between that and the sidewalk, which means it's federal property.
- 17:09[SPEAKER_04]: So the homeless people are very smart guys.
- 17:12[SPEAKER_04]: They're like, they're not like, so they put their tents there.
- 17:17[SPEAKER_04]: The federal people are not going to come kick the tents off.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_04]: You know, and the police can't touch them.
- 17:22[SPEAKER_04]: But what is happened is someone threw a cigarette.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_04]: It got on the mulch and the mulch caught on fire.
- 17:27[SPEAKER_04]: So Brad and I are driving home from yoga.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_04]: And there's fire.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_04]: Like, you know, across the street from our house.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_04]: And so I call nine one.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_04]: The fire department you guys is literally a block away.
- 17:37[SPEAKER_04]: It's just one block north, one block north.
- 17:40[SPEAKER_04]: I call my one.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_04]: It says call back later.
- 17:43[SPEAKER_04]: The phone line is busy.
- 17:44[SPEAKER_04]: I didn't get a hold.
- 17:45[SPEAKER_04]: I called like, so I had a cup of coffee.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_04]: And I was like, Brad, you want your coffee.
- 17:49[SPEAKER_04]: He's like, yeah, my coffee.
- 17:50[SPEAKER_04]: So I threw my coffee on the fire.
- 17:52[SPEAKER_04]: He finds a metal tray and it's pulling the mulch onto the sidewalk so that can't keep catching fire.
- 17:59[SPEAKER_04]: The fire department drives up and they go, excuse me, what are you doing?
- 18:01[SPEAKER_04]: And we're like, we're putting the fire out.
- 18:05[SPEAKER_04]: And they were like, like, kind of looking as like, like, we'd start at the fire and I was like, no, no, just do it.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_04]: Just here doing your job because I live across the street.
- 18:15[SPEAKER_04]: You weren't answering.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_04]: So like, I do understand like a key so frustrating.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_04]: And obviously they're understaffed and they're underfunded and that's all these different things.
- 18:23[SPEAKER_04]: But also, you know, like I listen to a lot of different things.
- 18:27[SPEAKER_04]: And if we knew locations, like I keep my locations on some of my husband knows where I am all the time.
- 18:31[SPEAKER_04]: But like I married what if you are single, what if you don't have that access or what if it is someone in your family that it's you have to have these options.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_04]: And I think this is really, really cool.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_04]: And I love that there's an app for it that allows people
- 18:44[SPEAKER_04]: I recently was in, I had, I had had some interesting Uber experiences where I have to go.
- 18:48[SPEAKER_04]: Excuse me, let me just call a husband and let him know I'm coming home because I don't want them to know I'm going home to an empty house.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_04]: But I heard that the scroll was like, said that on her Uber ride, she, her Uber driver pulled a mask above her space and pressed the button and the gas came in the car and she had the fourth thought to just open the door and get out of the car.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_04]: Like, look, it wasn't locked, right?
- 19:10[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 19:11[SPEAKER_04]: and so now there's all these things like ladies make sure the window is cracked make sure this all these freaking things we have to do so we need a tool so that we can sit in an Uber and feel like okay like I have something to protect myself I don't have to rely on you know someone see me from outside
- 19:30[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_01]: And interestingly enough, like what the reason we did the location pieces because we had multiple clients who were literally all us, I still have tax messages from like one of them who was like, showed me like, I'm tied to a bed.
- 19:45[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know where I am.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_01]: Like my traffic or will not let me leave and I need help.
- 19:50[SPEAKER_01]: I need someone and I'm like, where are you?
- 19:52[SPEAKER_01]: Like I don't, I can't like just find you, you know?
- 19:55[SPEAKER_01]: And like,
- 19:55[SPEAKER_01]: There was so many situations where it was like, we had the ability to go somewhere, but we didn't know where to go.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_01]: And so we say, like, whether you want to just get out of a boring meeting, you can push the button and it can then like, you know, you're an entire staff member, like, oh, gotta go, gotta get out of this meeting.
- 20:13[SPEAKER_01]: But like, or if it's just one of those traumatic experiences, you know, like, I was talking about our products in a women's event last month and this woman, this mother stood up and she's
- 20:24[SPEAKER_01]: Brian, and she's like, your product saved my daughter's life.
- 20:28[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like,
- 20:30[SPEAKER_01]: She's like, you know, she was out in Chicago.
- 20:32[SPEAKER_01]: She was drinking.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_01]: Like, she felt off.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_01]: She tested her drink.
- 20:35[SPEAKER_01]: Her dress was positive.
- 20:36[SPEAKER_01]: But she was like, almost blacking out, pushed the button.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_01]: Her best friend got her location.
- 20:41[SPEAKER_01]: And where she was, pulls up and like, she's safe now.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, that is it, right?
- 20:47[SPEAKER_01]: That's the story we want.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we don't want there still to be someone to be dropped or someone to be art.
- 20:53[SPEAKER_01]: But we want the, this could have been a very different story.
- 20:58[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, well, and like you said, like prevention, like the back to going back to your story, I mean, like so much of your family has gone through, but like if we can prevent things, yeah, then, you know, it does.
- 21:12[SPEAKER_04]: not only are live safe, but then there's the rest of the life that it's still safe.
- 21:16[SPEAKER_04]: Like there's all these different things.
- 21:17[SPEAKER_04]: And so you can't, obviously we'd love to figure out what is going on with people that are making these decisions to harm people, but we can't do that.
- 21:25[SPEAKER_04]: And so if we can save women from going through these things or anyone who uses this product, by the way, because like, you know what, you've got some beautiful lipsticks.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_04]: I think anyone can use it.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_04]: So I wonder,
- 21:39[SPEAKER_04]: You know what obviously you're getting this product out like what are you most excited about right now and and and how like how are people hearing about you because that's the other thing right like people are listening I wanted to have you on for viewers on people here perseverance also just freaking I'm obsessed with how much you get community involved like
- 21:56[SPEAKER_04]: Before I knew you, Joy, like you don't know this, like I saw you in Vesta Coffee Shop, probably in twenty twenty one, because we would have been going out.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_04]: And I saw you.
- 22:08[SPEAKER_04]: And because I knew you from the nonprofit that I had seen videos on all the different stuff.
- 22:13[SPEAKER_04]: And like you, you always bring people in on the thing you're doing.
- 22:18[SPEAKER_04]: And recently I got an email or a text and I was like, I'm doing this and I need, I'm like, I'm like this woman.
- 22:22[SPEAKER_04]: always brings a community in.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_04]: So that's one of the ways I want to have you on the show because I need people to hear like that part of it.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_04]: But like what are you most excited about now and what's next for the product?
- 22:31[SPEAKER_04]: Like how are people hearing about it?
- 22:33[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, absolutely.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_01]: So we, you know, we are relaunching now like post fire.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_01]: We kind of took all the feedback from our users and rebuilt.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_01]: Now we're back in stock nine months later.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_01]: And so April's a really exciting month.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_01]: I know this is coming out a little bit after that, but we're we're building
- 22:50[SPEAKER_01]: This movement of like, you know, swipe read.
- 22:52[SPEAKER_01]: The idea is like, we see red flags.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: We call them out.
- 22:55[SPEAKER_01]: I think one of the issues with women overall is that we don't listen to our guts.
- 23:00[SPEAKER_01]: We feel like we gaslight ourselves, right?
- 23:02[SPEAKER_01]: So it's like that we have this slogan.
- 23:04[SPEAKER_01]: It's like no more shame, no more doubt.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_01]: We see red flags.
- 23:08[SPEAKER_01]: We call them out.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 23:10[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_01]: And so it's this idea of this whole swipe red movement.
- 23:13[SPEAKER_01]: We have on our website where people can submit an experience they had to kind of say this, you know, be looking out for this.
- 23:21[SPEAKER_01]: And we also have an area where where people can submit a question like, is this just the egg or is it a red flag that I need to watch out for in this
- 23:29[SPEAKER_01]: kind of, you know, experience that I had or this person is giving me this vibe, right?
- 23:34[SPEAKER_01]: And so the whole point of SOS is really like we want to end the epidemic of gender-based violence.
- 23:40[SPEAKER_01]: We're doing that in, you know, the fun ways with lipstick, you know, kind of
- 23:45[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, really, it's like a whole new way of redefining personal safety, essentially, right?
- 23:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_01]: But it doesn't stop there.
- 23:52[SPEAKER_01]: We know that this is a community problem.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_01]: So it needs community solutions.
- 23:56[SPEAKER_01]: So we are training bars, nightclubs, restaurants, casinos, you know, universities, educating on the nuances of violence.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_01]: We teach all different components of that.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_01]: And we show them and they get our product and we teach them how to use it.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_01]: And so even if like, you know, people that are closing a restaurant at night or a bar at night, if it's two in the morning and they just like, they have, you know, cash to put at the bank or if they're just, you know, leaving by themselves, a lot of times they then have our lipstick just to have on them or to have, you know, emergency services on the phone just in case.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_01]: So for us, it really is an overarching movement of women watching up for women.
- 24:33[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, obviously, our test trips, we now have, you know, a key chain that can go on on your, you know, keys.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_01]: So you can have like test trips in there.
- 24:41[SPEAKER_01]: And so we know it's not just a women problem, but we know it starts with women because we know ninety three percent of perpetrators are male, unfortunately.
- 24:50[SPEAKER_01]: And so for us, it really is like the drug go bathroom energy component is if I'm in a space, within basically with a forty feet of where I am, if
- 25:01[SPEAKER_01]: My lipstick goes off essentially my apple goes off, but I didn't push my lipstick.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_01]: It could be someone else who pushed theirs.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_01]: So anyone's phone can go off that has it in that space.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_01]: And again, it's the idea of like, you might not need it, but someone around you might and the whole thing is like, it's just about
- 25:20[SPEAKER_01]: prevention, right?
- 25:21[SPEAKER_01]: No one wants to think what if I get raped?
- 25:24[SPEAKER_01]: What if I get drugged?
- 25:25[SPEAKER_01]: What if something happens to me, right?
- 25:27[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure my mother-in-law wasn't thinking what if my life ends today?
- 25:31[SPEAKER_01]: You know, never did he go to jail, never did she say anything about domestic violence, but we know we knew he was abusive and so
- 25:40[SPEAKER_01]: for forty years she lived in that and that's how she ended her life.
- 25:43[SPEAKER_01]: And so for us, it's just you never know.
- 25:48[SPEAKER_01]: Abuser's not like, hey, I'm gonna abuser.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_01]: They are slick.
- 25:53[SPEAKER_01]: They are career criminals.
- 25:54[SPEAKER_01]: They oftentimes look like, you know, the best person in society.
- 26:00[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_01]: And they're not.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_01]: And then behind closed doors, it's hidden violence.
- 26:06[SPEAKER_01]: And that is what we saw over and over and over.
- 26:08[SPEAKER_01]: So it's just what can we put in everyone's hands?
- 26:12[SPEAKER_01]: And then how can we educate all of us on what to look for?
- 26:17[SPEAKER_01]: Should we have to do this?
- 26:18[SPEAKER_01]: Fuck no.
- 26:19[SPEAKER_01]: We should not have to.
- 26:20[SPEAKER_01]: Unfortunately, though, no one's coming for us.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_01]: So we're coming for ourselves.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it's so true.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_04]: Like my mom was like, there's like a certain hand.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_04]: If you see this hand that people are doing, then like, that's a girl saying, I'm like, okay, hold on.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_04]: Now I got to know the hand.
- 26:33[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, I got it.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_04]: And I will say, like, I've been to several restaurants where like in the bathroom.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_04]: It's like, if you order this drink, we will get you out of the situation.
- 26:41[SPEAKER_04]: And I
- 26:43[SPEAKER_04]: And I'm obsessed with that.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_04]: I was like, I'm going to drink here more because like I'm at least on my girlfriends again because like you're keeping people safe.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_04]: Like their the community is in small pieces coming together to combat something.
- 26:55[SPEAKER_04]: And I think that's the only way it gets solved.
- 26:58[SPEAKER_04]: But I really I really do love the empowerment of of what your tools are doing.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_04]: And I also love how much feedback you are getting so that you guys can just continue to make it better and make it more accessible.
- 27:09[SPEAKER_04]: Make it a keychain versus all these different things that are that are you're being
- 27:13[SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, nobody wants to like, here's a reason.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_04]: Like, this top, the body is called, be it to you see it.
- 27:20[SPEAKER_04]: Nobody wants to think about these things when they're thinking about achieving their goals and yet.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_04]: there are gonna be situations where you need help or someone around you does.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_04]: And so I thought like, wow, okay, so maybe most of the women who listen to this are not at all needing someone like this.
- 27:38[SPEAKER_04]: But maybe they have a daughter who's bad to go to college.
- 27:40[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe they have a friends kid.
- 27:42[SPEAKER_04]: They have a niece.
- 27:42[SPEAKER_04]: They have a new coworker who is gonna go show homes.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_04]: Like how can we start gifting things to people that help support them on their journey and in their dreams of all the things they wanna do.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_04]: So they're not
- 27:56[SPEAKER_04]: They don't become a victim.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_04]: We prevent it when we happen.
- 27:58[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 27:59[SPEAKER_01]: You know, we can all carry phones, right?
- 28:02[SPEAKER_01]: We carry a phone because we might need to call someone or obviously wherever most people work from it.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_01]: But I think shifting the narrative from like, what if I have to call nine one to like, just to have it just in case.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_01]: It's like having a bandaid, having, you know, like we were driving down the road, like a couple weeks ago.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_01]: And there was a kid walking barefoot on the side of the road.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_01]: We tried calling name on one.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_01]: We got put on hold.
- 28:27[SPEAKER_01]: We just push the lipstick, right?
- 28:29[SPEAKER_01]: Like, please can someone come to this location.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_01]: We're right here with him.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_01]: Like, we're not sure if he's okay.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_01]: We want to make sure.
- 28:34[SPEAKER_01]: But like, just, it's just that component of it.
- 28:37[SPEAKER_01]: And I think, I think because the world will be live in, there is this kind of like, well, we shouldn't have to.
- 28:44[SPEAKER_01]: And I agree with that.
- 28:45[SPEAKER_01]: Like, the amount of a feed that we get that any time a post goes viral on TikTok for us, it's
- 28:51[SPEAKER_01]: two main things.
- 28:52[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you so much.
- 28:53[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what are you like, you know, aquafaba or something like, you know, all these like names of, you know, women that have done things.
- 29:00[SPEAKER_01]: The second thing is this is so sad.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_01]: This is so sad that we need this.
- 29:04[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, it is so sad that we need it.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 29:07[SPEAKER_01]: And at the end of the day, I'm raising two daughters.
- 29:10[SPEAKER_01]: I myself and my entire life mission is to make sure that my daughters are not one and three.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_01]: I've taken that.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want them to experience that, right?
- 29:20[SPEAKER_01]: And so I think for all of us to realize that like when we put tools in our hands, when we are educated, and also we say this to businesses, if you're going to serve alcohol, you need to have the responsibility to know what it looks like if someone is drug, you're not going to know.
- 29:36[SPEAKER_01]: These people do it.
- 29:37[SPEAKER_01]: They put it in vaccine bottles for Christ's sake.
- 29:39[SPEAKER_01]: Like they know what they're doing.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_01]: It's very easy.
- 29:43[SPEAKER_01]: So we teach, you know, bars and restaurants and about how does it look to de-escalate a situation?
- 29:49[SPEAKER_01]: How does it look to believe a survivor?
- 29:51[SPEAKER_01]: How does it look to actively get help?
- 29:53[SPEAKER_01]: Because the second thing that happens when something happens to someone who's harmed is that you're not believed.
- 29:58[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 29:59[SPEAKER_01]: That's why our color, we have a color called we believe you.
- 30:02[SPEAKER_01]: We have another color called it's not the dress.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_01]: We need to shift the culture and that's part of the red flag piece is like shift the shame from survivor to perpetrator.
- 30:13[SPEAKER_01]: It is not our fault, our testers are called trust issues for a reason because we shouldn't
- 30:19[SPEAKER_01]: Because we all have trust issues.
- 30:20[SPEAKER_01]: It's not our fault for having those.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_04]: No, we're not born with them.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_04]: Like, it's created.
- 30:25[SPEAKER_04]: And I think it, I agree.
- 30:28[SPEAKER_04]: Like, when I hear, like, we shouldn't have to do that.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_04]: I, I, I fucking agree.
- 30:32[SPEAKER_04]: Like, we shouldn't have to go fucking, I think.
- 30:35[SPEAKER_04]: There's a lot of things right now that like having to call my congressman daily and remind them of like, what I fucking want them to do for me.
- 30:43[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, that's annoying.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_04]: I don't want to do that anymore.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_04]: I do miss a time when we didn't even know you're you didn't know your congressmen because they just did the job that they said they were going to do so I miss that but also at the same time like if we don't do things where we can you know we can't do everything like I can't solve
- 31:04[SPEAKER_04]: all of the problems in the world.
- 31:06[SPEAKER_04]: But if we can all go, okay, I'm gonna, but I can, I, here's what I can do for my friends in my life.
- 31:12[SPEAKER_04]: Here's what I can do for the family of my life.
- 31:14[SPEAKER_04]: Here's what I can do for my neighborhood.
- 31:15[SPEAKER_04]: I do watch my neighbor's houses.
- 31:16[SPEAKER_03]: Yes.
- 31:17[SPEAKER_04]: The house across the street from us was empty for months.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_04]: Do you think that we made sure everyone walking that house was supposed to be there?
- 31:22[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, we did.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_04]: Excuse me.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_04]: Hi.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_04]: Are you here for something?
- 31:24[SPEAKER_04]: Are you a contractor?
- 31:26[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I love it.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_04]: No, I'm not the one of this house, but I am watching you.
- 31:29[SPEAKER_04]: I'm watching, got my camera on watching you.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_04]: Like that was the neighbors that we were because that's the only way you keep your community healthy and safe.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_04]: You know, we all have to look out for the other people around us.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and if we do that, we can prevent life long trauma.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_01]: Like that's the thing that we, you know, this prevention piece of it was missing from the work we were doing, because I'm like, these women will never be the same.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_01]: They will never heal fully.
- 31:57[SPEAKER_01]: You cannot like my, I don't know where my eight year old fell on this thing, but she did this thing.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_01]: She came to my room and she's like, Mom, I want to show you something.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_01]: I'm okay.
- 32:04[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_01]: She had a piece of paper.
- 32:06[SPEAKER_01]: She crumbled it up.
- 32:07[SPEAKER_01]: And then she's like, she was using it as like word.
- 32:10[SPEAKER_01]: She has this one girl at school that's not treating her well and she's having a really hard time.
- 32:14[SPEAKER_01]: She's like, I told this is what I told her.
- 32:16[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, I scrunched this paper up and said, you know, you can stay the main words and then I can open it up and try to like, you know, smooth it out, but is it smooth?
- 32:26[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, you said that to her.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_01]: She's like, I did.
- 32:29[SPEAKER_01]: I did.
- 32:30[UNKNOWN]: I was like, oh my God.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my, but it's, I love that example.
- 32:36[SPEAKER_01]: It will never be smooth.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_01]: Like you're never not going to fear or feel the trauma that lives in your body once you experience it.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_01]: Not only that, but the implications on the mental and physical help of a person, but it's also the economic impact.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_01]: In Nevada, we have a one and two domestic violence rate and women not one and four, like it's normal.
- 33:00[SPEAKER_01]: It's one and two here.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_01]: We also have
- 33:02[SPEAKER_01]: One of the sickest things that we're known for here is that since nineteen ninety three, we have the highest rate of mill partners killing their female partners.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_01]: In the nation.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_05]: That's insane.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_01]: Not meant in obviously trafficking and other things.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_01]: And so I'm just like, this is my community.
- 33:18[SPEAKER_01]: I've lived here for fifteen years.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not, I don't want to be known for these things.
- 33:22[SPEAKER_01]: I want to be known for a community that steps up for their community.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 33:27[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 33:29[SPEAKER_04]: Well, and it's, you know, it's one of the reasons that we actually, because I did not know the stats when I moved here.
- 33:34[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know that's not me, but like, I think it's an interesting thing, right?
- 33:36[SPEAKER_04]: Like, when you look at that stuff, you can't unsee it.
- 33:39[SPEAKER_04]: But one of the things that I love about this town is the community of the locals who come together and they like, truly, like, one of the things I always say is like, if I'm doing an event,
- 33:50[SPEAKER_04]: People will freaking show up.
- 33:52[SPEAKER_04]: And if they don't drop, they share.
- 33:53[SPEAKER_04]: And if they can't share it, they like, they like ask if I need any help with anything else.
- 33:57[SPEAKER_04]: Like there's just, there is that.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_04]: And I think that's actually in a lot of more cities.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_04]: And I think if you're feeling lonely, you gotta go find the people who are trying to make change where it feels like, it's an uphill battle.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_04]: Like why would you do that?
- 34:10[SPEAKER_04]: So find the people like, boy, and
- 34:12[SPEAKER_04]: And that, because you get to feel like you're part of something, and you get to be part of something, and then you're safety in it.
- 34:18[SPEAKER_04]: People see my car, and they are looking around for me.
- 34:21[SPEAKER_04]: That is one thing I know.
- 34:22[SPEAKER_04]: Every time I park my car, I get text messages where are you?
- 34:28[SPEAKER_04]: I love that.
- 34:29[SPEAKER_04]: I joke because we finally got an actual car.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_04]: I do want to wrap it in a bright color.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_04]: I want people to know and be like, why would you want people to know it's you?
- 34:37[SPEAKER_04]: Because I want people looking out for me.
- 34:40[SPEAKER_04]: I want people like sure a stalker could find me whatever they could always find me in whatever cart like but I want the people in my neighborhood to go oh she's around somewhere and be looking out for me because I do that for them like that's what I want you know so it's really okay joy you are a woman who does a lot of things you never do one thing is there anything else you're excited about right now that we need to know about
- 35:02[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm in a class learning to run for politics right now insane.
- 35:08[SPEAKER_01]: It is absolutely insane.
- 35:09[SPEAKER_01]: So I've got like we I graduate from the class in July this class was built actually built for Kamala when she was trying to run it for AG and she needed a community of people to help and so they built this kind of thing and so
- 35:23[SPEAKER_01]: It's me, I'm part of one of twenty women in this class, but my goal is to run for office.
- 35:29[SPEAKER_01]: So I, you know, never want to do people always be like, you should run for office and like hell, no, like I don't want to do politics, right?
- 35:35[SPEAKER_01]: But if not us, then who?
- 35:38[SPEAKER_01]: And like, again, like my number one issue is women safety.
- 35:42[SPEAKER_01]: And I can't believe we've never had a politician who stood on violence against women in our time when we are known for these things I just said, right?
- 35:51[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm, yeah, I'm, you know, raising money for training and then finishing training and then just identifying what first, eventually my goal is Congress, but I'll probably want to a local race first to start doing some local Nevada stuff.
- 36:04[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 36:05[SPEAKER_01]: In how we can get the community activated and then start getting, you know, the nation activated because Lord knows we need it.
- 36:11[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I love that you're doing this on your brave.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, you already knew that, but like, I know people always ask me and Brad, like, are you guys gonna do politics?
- 36:18[SPEAKER_04]: And I'm like, I would rather have enough money to just give to the right person to go into politics because I, I think I get to agree.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_04]: I do angry and I just just not gonna come out right.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_04]: I'm not gonna win.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_04]: I'm not gonna win any flies with honey.
- 36:30[SPEAKER_04]: So, but I, but I do, I do agree.
- 36:33[SPEAKER_04]: I can see like, especially with going on, I'm like, okay, fuck, there's just fucking no.
- 36:37[SPEAKER_04]: Who my don't need?
- 36:38[SPEAKER_04]: Like, what's going on?
- 36:38[SPEAKER_04]: So like, at some point, you know,
- 36:41[SPEAKER_04]: You have to end then also just like, and not just local, but there does need someone who knows the information like you because the misinformation doesn't help anyone.
- 36:50[SPEAKER_04]: And no one representing it doesn't help anyone.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_04]: And also people just, and also the really fact that matters was too many fucking men and politics who don't know women's experience.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_04]: And they think, well, I was a good husband and I didn't hear anyone.
- 37:02[SPEAKER_04]: So like, this doesn't really happen.
- 37:03[SPEAKER_04]: And my sons don't like, but they don't see it, you know?
- 37:06[SPEAKER_04]: And so I think it's really, really great.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_04]: So you guys watch this space.
- 37:10[SPEAKER_04]: We'll see where joy is.
- 37:11[SPEAKER_04]: I would love to know.
- 37:12[SPEAKER_04]: Just make sure what obviously we'll vote because we vote for everything.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know, the the other piece about women running is how much money it takes to run these races.
- 37:21[SPEAKER_01]: It's a no like for assembly woman or state Senate.
- 37:24[SPEAKER_01]: It's like two hundred grand or ways for Congress.
- 37:27[SPEAKER_01]: It's over two million.
- 37:29[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 37:30[SPEAKER_01]: And so you look at and also by the way, those state local those pale like nine thousand a year.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_01]: So you're also working.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_01]: So like, yeah, you know, it minimizes the amount of people who can run for these positions and that you can have an actual hourly job.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_04]: You have to have it yet.
- 37:47[SPEAKER_04]: No, it's really.
- 37:48[SPEAKER_04]: it's it's really unfortunate it's really the whole system's a disaster but you know we need we actually do need a fight for it and we need a fight for with people who actually are looking out for the community you know looking out for people yeah
- 38:03[SPEAKER_01]: We are the ones we've been waiting for like if there's one thing that I feel like I wake up every day realizing like one is a discipline of hope and two like you are the person you need right it's like we you know you say that about like your inner child your younger self like you are the the one who would make them proud right make the world proud be that person that you're going like I want this to change
- 38:25[SPEAKER_01]: because not everyone can do that or you know even wants to do it and that's okay too.
- 38:32[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't for a long time but I don't know.
- 38:34[SPEAKER_01]: I guess I feel like the women's safety needs every component and we can't just have a product and we can't just have education and we can't just have politics and we can't just write we need an overarching solution to truly see this epidemic change and that what our families committed to.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 38:53[SPEAKER_04]: Ah, joy, you're doing so many great things.
- 38:55[SPEAKER_04]: We're taking a brief break and then find out how people can find you.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_04]: Follow you.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_04]: Work with you.
- 38:58[SPEAKER_04]: Perfect.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, joy.
- 39:00[SPEAKER_04]: Where do they hang out?
- 39:01[SPEAKER_04]: Where do they get this amazing product?
- 39:03[SPEAKER_04]: I'm showing it.
- 39:05[SPEAKER_04]: If you're watching on the YouTube, look at this cute thing.
- 39:07[SPEAKER_04]: Look at this.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_04]: Look at this.
- 39:09[UNKNOWN]: Look at this.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_04]: Look at this.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_04]: Look at the lipstick.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, look at the local hand painted two by a local artist.
- 39:14[SPEAKER_01]: We have two versions.
- 39:15[SPEAKER_01]: We have that one and we have this one now.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my gosh.
- 39:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's so fun.
- 39:21[SPEAKER_03]: Oh my god.
- 39:22[SPEAKER_03]: I love the art.
- 39:23[SPEAKER_04]: I love the women on it.
- 39:25[SPEAKER_04]: I love it.
- 39:26[SPEAKER_04]: It's like, it's like the best.
- 39:28[SPEAKER_04]: And so we've got this is this is really cute.
- 39:30[SPEAKER_04]: It says thirst trap.
- 39:32[SPEAKER_04]: And this is what you go put over your top.
- 39:34[SPEAKER_04]: I think the names are so cute.
- 39:36[SPEAKER_04]: It's like a, it's like a con of for your cup, guys.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_04]: It goes.
- 39:41[SPEAKER_04]: And then the trusted, these are those test strips.
- 39:43[SPEAKER_01]: Yep, yes.
- 39:45[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, and you haven't seen it yet, but we have to, we'll have to bring him out front, Leslie, because we have, we're launching trusty the mayor, the mascot.
- 39:52[SPEAKER_01]: This, this.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god, please, please, please walk it through my driveway.
- 40:00[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not going to do it someplace.
- 40:02[SPEAKER_01]: You never know.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_02]: I love it.
- 40:03[SPEAKER_04]: I want to film it for a story.
- 40:05[SPEAKER_04]: So you got, and there's all this information.
- 40:07[SPEAKER_04]: So where do they go to swipe red to get all this stuff?
- 40:10[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so it's SLS, but it's not spelled SOS.
- 40:13[SPEAKER_01]: It's both ES, OES, COVER, spelling, SOS cosmetics.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_01]: You can find us on TikTok Instagram, Facebook, all the things in our website is SLS cosmetics.com.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_01]: And yeah, we are on TikTok shop, we're online.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to get back into a couple of local stores here, but then our goal is obviously to keep expanding into
- 40:34[SPEAKER_01]: larger retail because we want as many people as possible to have access to this.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, yes.
- 40:39[SPEAKER_04]: And so and guys, like again, like college, it's starting to like there's a reason to buy this for any woman in your life.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_04]: And so I really appreciate not having to get some another face mask.
- 40:50[SPEAKER_04]: I really.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for every high school graduate, like imagine if they bring that to college because also the first like the red zone, it's called the red zone, which is basically like when you arrive in college,
- 41:04[SPEAKER_01]: to Christmas is the highest amount of sexual and domestic violence happens in the whole year.
- 41:08[SPEAKER_01]: Whoa, everyone that is new, especially new people on campus need to be caring something.
- 41:15[SPEAKER_01]: Again, these are solvable issues.
- 41:16[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_01]: That's what we're here for.
- 41:18[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 41:19[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, so we're all going to get that.
- 41:20[SPEAKER_04]: We're all going to follow you.
- 41:21[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to call on the journey.
- 41:22[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to watch your rise in politics.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_04]: We're going to say we knew her when you've given us a lot.
- 41:27[SPEAKER_04]: And I want to say like I love the like swiping red on shame.
- 41:31[SPEAKER_04]: I think that that is like something really important.
- 41:33[SPEAKER_04]: I had a therapist who was like, I want to just caveat like my ex was not abusive, but she had said, I ignored red flags of the relationship not working out on the first dates.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_04]: And she said, you have to start practicing noticing red flags.
- 41:48[SPEAKER_04]: I'm so grateful that therapist because I did.
- 41:50[SPEAKER_04]: I went on a date with a guy.
- 41:51[SPEAKER_04]: I was like, this feels really controlling.
- 41:53[SPEAKER_04]: That's a real red flag to make.
- 41:54[SPEAKER_04]: You know, like, so like, just really, it was really great.
- 41:57[SPEAKER_04]: So I love that.
- 42:04[SPEAKER_04]: If there's anything else, bold, executable intrinsic or targeted steps, people can take to be it till they see it.
- 42:09[SPEAKER_04]: What do you have for us?
- 42:10[SPEAKER_01]: I would just say one whole space for yourself, you can't heal the world or do your dreams if you're not healing yourself first.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_01]: So I would say that first and then the second thing is just try it.
- 42:20[SPEAKER_01]: Like what's the worst that could happen?
- 42:22[SPEAKER_01]: I think there's so many dreams that people have and these ideas and ambitions.
- 42:27[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a hairstylist who invented this tech, you know, tech and scientific component of a lipstick.
- 42:32[SPEAKER_01]: Like, and I always say if I can do it, you can, but the only reason people that actually do things are because we just go, oh, I'm real scared, but I guess I'm just going to keep doing it anyway.
- 42:44[SPEAKER_01]: So heal yourself so that then you can step into what it is that you want to do, but give it a try.
- 42:49[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 42:50[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, give it a try.
- 42:50[SPEAKER_04]: You guys, I can't tell you how many times I hear that and I'm like, yeah.
- 42:56[SPEAKER_04]: It gives like, it's a reminder we all mean.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_04]: And it is very true.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_04]: Like, it is not selfish to take a pause on helping others to heal yourself because you will be able to do so much more from that.
- 43:08[SPEAKER_01]: And it's not only not selfish, it is selfish of you not to heal first.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_01]: I know that is a rude way to say that, but I just want to be very clear.
- 43:16[SPEAKER_01]: If you are trying to heal yourself by healing other people, you will harm other people.
- 43:20[SPEAKER_01]: You have to heal first.
- 43:22[SPEAKER_01]: And if you don't,
- 43:24[SPEAKER_01]: You will make, you will have best intentions, but impact over, I mean, intent versus impact are very different.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 43:31[SPEAKER_01]: You may intend to do good, but you are trying to heal you for us.
- 43:35[SPEAKER_01]: You got to heal you first.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_04]: I'm really glad you said that.
- 43:39[SPEAKER_04]: It's very, it's very true.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_04]: And I tell people all the time that like self-care isn't selfish care.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_04]: It's actually very selfish and I say it for a different reason because I have a different line of work and I'm like, it is selfish of you to not take care of yourself and then become a dependent and liability to your young and children.
- 43:54[SPEAKER_04]: Sorry, it just is.
- 43:55[SPEAKER_04]: So the whole different was like, and this is the whole other way of thinking about it, but intent and impact are very different things.
- 44:01[SPEAKER_04]: And so everyone, you have the most full permission.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_04]: You can take care of you so that you can do things in your community and for others you want to do a Hoover.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_04]: Thank you so much.
- 44:12[SPEAKER_04]: We must hang out again.
- 44:13[SPEAKER_04]: And everyone, until next time, be it till you see it.
