- 0:33Hamster with a blunt. Pen knife for doing quicker
- 0:35quicker. Hello and welcome back to
- 0:40Hamster with a Blunt Pen Knife, the Doctor Who Commentary
- 0:42podcast with hey, the biggest hoe in the business, Joe Ford.
- 0:51I didn't realise I sounded Welsh because that's what you sounded
- 0:54like in that intro. Oh yeah, and the second biggest
- 0:57hoe, Dylan Reece. Excellent.
- 1:00I thought you were going for Rosser T Davis rather than Joe
- 1:02Ford with that intro but. Dylan, we've never compared
- 1:05notes, have we? Just how much of A hoe the two
- 1:07of us are? We'll have to do that next time
- 1:09we meet. We are massive hoes.
- 1:11Well we are doing the velvet web and if anyone gets balls, not
- 1:15saying we will but if anyone does we you could just compare
- 1:19your hoe lists. We could have a hoe down.
- 1:21Yeah, I mean, I'm going to give a little spoiler.
- 1:24This might be my favorite episode of the entire story.
- 1:27Oh, that is a spoiler. Yeah, I love a big brain in the
- 1:31jar with eyes. I think, I think like there's
- 1:35something inside of every sci-fi Doctor, a fan that you just
- 1:39can't not love A brain in the jar, right?
- 1:42And didn't didn't they really fuck up in those two?
- 1:45No. 12. Doctors Christmas.
- 1:48Specials where where the brain creatures weren't weren't the
- 1:52brains of acomorphic or whatever.
- 1:53Oh. OK, yeah, you've got a point.
- 1:55I thought you're just saying the episodes for shit.
- 1:57And if they opened up their heads and those enormous eyes
- 2:00came out, that would have been wonderful.
- 2:02There's brains in cupboards there as well, like.
- 2:04The the whole episodes could be the same and they could just
- 2:08call them the brains of them often.
- 2:09Yeah, if if Doctor Mysterio was a Keys of Mariner sequel, I
- 2:14would it would be in my top 10, but it's in my bottom 5 and.
- 2:18It's not like the new series is above all that sort of thing.
- 2:21The sense fear is mentioned in Planet of the Ute Yeah.
- 2:24So they will make those links. Show up.
- 2:26Exactly. And in in the sequel to Doctor
- 2:29Mysterio, Ghost stories, they don't even appear there as well.
- 2:33You could have it's a comic joke.
- 2:35So it's a it's a Titan comic. Oh.
- 2:37But that's. Too hot for me, I'm afraid.
- 2:40It's very hot, but you could have the brains of Morphs on
- 2:44versus Harmony show. Who doesn't want to see that?
- 2:48Who's Harmony show again? No, I'm being serious.
- 2:53Speaking for the everyday. It's not like people that took
- 2:55their heads off. Yeah, they're the brain people.
- 2:56God. Yeah, no, the brains of Morphton
- 3:00are much better. They they infiltrated unit back
- 3:04at the end of Mysterio so that's still waiting to pay off.
- 3:08I'm still waiting for that. Not.
- 3:11Steven Moffett Christmas special.
- 3:12Actually, that's what he's coming back for if C Tech came
- 3:15back last year. Harmony Show season 2 finale
- 3:18bets. Are all yes.
- 3:21All my bets are off for a very different reason.
- 3:24Can I ask you a question about this episode?
- 3:26Because there's a wonderful moment in this, and I want to
- 3:30ask, is it the first meta Doctor Who joke or is it just a quirky
- 3:33idea? The bit, you know, where they go
- 3:35into that empty room and go, my God, what a fabulous laboratory
- 3:39this is with all this amazing equipment and it's a table and a
- 3:43dirty mug, which is obviously the sort of thing we usually get
- 3:45in Doctor Who is sort of going ahead when people are talking
- 3:47about amazing laboratories. Is that a meta joke or is it
- 3:51just a quirky idea? No, I think it's just a quirky.
- 3:54Idea. Yeah, a quirky idea.
- 3:55Really fun 1 though. Yeah, but I'm sure if you read
- 4:00Elizabeth Sandifer's essay on the case of Baroness, she's a
- 4:03half joke. Yeah, Yes, you do.
- 4:05I've got it on the shelf back there.
- 4:07I could read it to you. It'd probably only take 2 1/2
- 4:09hours. I'd rather watch it if I want
- 4:11it. Well then, why don't we?
- 4:16Sorry. I'm sorry.
- 4:16I'm giggling. Doctor Who?
- 4:18The Atlas. I want to know where we are.
- 4:20That was the most seductive. Why don't we?
- 4:22He's ever said, you know. That's not true, Chair.
- 4:26Oh yeah, sorry, yeah, who's countless in?
- 4:30Oh, countless in, yeah. Go on, dude.
- 4:33Are we ready to press play? Because, Luke Malloy, it looks
- 4:35like you're doing some Googling. I'm trying to find the map of
- 4:39Marinus. Oh, doesn't this episode
- 4:41introduce Altos and Sabitha as well?
- 4:43Yeah, exactly. The hottest couple in Doctor
- 4:46Who. I've not got it the the until.
- 4:48Ben and Polly. The Amazon sample only shows
- 4:51trends a little and Mars Mars. Imagine a foursome between
- 4:57Altos, Sabitha, Ben and Polly. I'll throw Jamie in there as
- 5:01well. Oh.
- 5:03I'd throw in Miss Kelly from Seeds of Death.
- 5:07Jean, is it Jeer Kelly? Jeer Kelly.
- 5:09Oh yeah. Jiha.
- 5:14Kelly right been. Ready for the last two minutes.
- 5:17OK. And 321 play.
- 5:21Into the web Go. Yeah, the velvet Web.
- 5:24Yeah, that's. That's, that's, that's yeah,
- 5:30it's great, isn't it? It is.
- 5:31Which what you said earlier about the sort of alienness and
- 5:34the ambience. And it's got it all.
- 5:36You know I've. Since did people think at the
- 5:40time? Since watching Marinus, I've
- 5:42been watching quite a few Hartnells just in.
- 5:44Yeah, it's just bad and backing. What else did you watch?
- 5:47I watched the gunfighters recently.
- 5:49Little T little tease of the arc.
- 5:51I just put 1 arc on. I watched the Toymaker animation
- 5:55very recently. It's great, isn't it?
- 5:58Yeah. Is it just episode 1 of the arc
- 5:59you watched? Yeah, it just took just a.
- 6:01Little fall's my favorite. What are you up to?
- 6:03Were you up to no good? The naughty monoid.
- 6:06The Toymaker animation, there's a bit, I don't really want to
- 6:10spoil it in case I'm not, but there's a bit where you get this
- 6:13huge toymaker drinking out of drinking cocktails out of a
- 6:17TARDIS over and over again. There's loads of oh it's so
- 6:21good. Yes, somehow they managed to
- 6:24make that watchable. That is a true magic trick.
- 6:29Unlike Ian Mavine, So what are? We seeing now what's going on
- 6:34They're having. They're all been hypnotized.
- 6:37That's right. So all of this sort of splendour
- 6:40we're seeing that's not actually there.
- 6:42None of it. Yeah.
- 6:43None of it's there, yeah. They didn't have to build the
- 6:45set then, really, didn't they? Oh no, that would give away the
- 6:48twist. Yeah, plot twist.
- 6:50And there's Babs. Babs just having the time of her
- 6:52life. Having a decadent time.
- 6:55All these people have said here's a load of free stuff and
- 6:59she's just taking it. Yeah, this is the one place
- 7:02where the three of us will be dead in a heartbeat.
- 7:04A load of free stuff. We're there especially they're
- 7:08offering out food. You're going to come along later
- 7:10with a platter of food and it's like a bit of ham, cheese and a
- 7:12grape. I.
- 7:13Mean that's all I want in my life.
- 7:15Oh no, we'd be getting offered Eagle Moss figures, big finished
- 7:18CDs. They'd have the whole collection
- 7:21of Jago and Lightfoot. BBC books are being heaven.
- 7:24Long Barrow under the cosh. I'd just be having.
- 7:28I'd be like, bring me champagne, bitches.
- 7:31Champagne and Mythmakers DVDs please.
- 7:34And a charcuterie board. Yeah, no, don't.
- 7:38Don't give him that, he'll hate everything.
- 7:42Oh, that's right, that was the style beast, wasn't it?
- 7:45Sat down, Sat down with my charcuterie board, ready to
- 7:49enjoy the triumphant return of Russell T Davis, and I was
- 7:52crying into my fucking hand by. The hypnotism went off
- 7:56immediately. I absolutely love their reaction
- 8:00to the fruit. Oh my God, I think that's a
- 8:02pomegranate figs. Wow.
- 8:06Yeah, but what's in Britain? They're like Russians.
- 8:09Are they? We're posting like 59 or 57 or
- 8:13something do. You think we get figs on every
- 8:15planet? Oh.
- 8:16That is literally cheese and grapes.
- 8:17Look at it. That is on there.
- 8:21A whole roast chicken look. Oh my God, that is a good night
- 8:26for me. We want to salivate.
- 8:29And these ladies serving it? They can stick around too.
- 8:33The brains can, can have me. I don't, Oh, actually they, they
- 8:37try and recruit people into working down their minds or
- 8:39something. And.
- 8:41You love these sort of steaming bits of art behind them there.
- 8:45It's space art. Not your average part, isn't it?
- 8:48No. So if these if these aren't
- 8:51actually truffles, what do you think they're eating?
- 8:54Rabbit shit I don't. Want to know?
- 9:01The corpses of previous travelers.
- 9:04Oh, that's a dark reading, but could be true.
- 9:07It comes out to us in his tiny shorts.
- 9:09Oh yes? Do we see his thighs straight
- 9:12away? I don't think we do.
- 9:13I think so. His long robe.
- 9:15Got the ropes. It's not until he's out on the
- 9:16ice that he takes his robes off. Can I ask you a question about
- 9:22the decor on Gallifrey? Because I think this actually
- 9:24looks a bit more splendiferous than your average 80s Gallifrey
- 9:28set. Oh, Gallifrey looks shit,
- 9:29doesn't it look. At these fabulous statues and
- 9:31things. I I suspect they've just raided
- 9:34the historical department, but it works.
- 9:38I was going to bring this up in part 5 though.
- 9:40I think that there's the courtroom set looks quite
- 9:44Gallifrey and there's a Gallifrey like symbol in it as
- 9:47well. I'm sure there's some big finish
- 9:50somewhere that weaves the two together.
- 9:53I mean, they they reach a formula, don't they?
- 9:55Come series 5 of we're going to throw all of our money in one
- 9:59impressive set and set the whole story there, right?
- 10:02Yeah. But I don't think any of those
- 10:03sets are less impressive than the sets in this story where
- 10:06they're doing one per. Episode.
- 10:08I agree. In fact, sometimes they're doing
- 10:11about 5 sets per episode. I don't it's around this bit,
- 10:16but I like the normal silly interactions that are going on
- 10:20in the background between like Ian and Barbara, but Ian's like,
- 10:23oh, wait to see the bill and Bob was like, oh, we're in.
- 10:28It's so it's so casual and it's very in the background.
- 10:31It's just. Well, it's like Dylan said
- 10:33earlier, isn't it? They're, they're finally all
- 10:35gelling, you know, that sort of family.
- 10:37They all want to be there with each other.
- 10:41I mean, they got a lot of choice through this mission, have they?
- 10:44Is Hartnell's wig shorter in this than other stories?
- 10:49He's wearing a wig. I don't know.
- 10:51What? You know this.
- 10:53I mean, it doesn't. Do Hot for TV is here.
- 10:56It's been glued on too successfully there, I'd say it.
- 10:59Just it just looks a bit shorter than do.
- 11:02You know that that wall piece, you know with the eyes that glow
- 11:05later isn't that great? Yeah.
- 11:08Do you know what though this is? I think this might be one of the
- 11:11only episodes Moffitt watch between like 2014 and 2016
- 11:14because there's they have the pain in the in the side of the
- 11:17head, which is very last Christmas.
- 11:19And obviously there's the brains in the jars, which is very
- 11:22Doctor hysteria. I think quite a lot of Doctor
- 11:24Who sits in Moffitt's head and he reuses it and doesn't realize
- 11:28it. I'll be reading some smiles.
- 11:30I've been. Reading some books lately?
- 11:32Yeah. I think they all.
- 11:33Do. Yeah, Terry Nation does it to
- 11:35himself. What's it terroristic says?
- 11:37Yes. You don't have to have your own
- 11:39original idea. Use other people's.
- 11:42Yeah, the goods look. At them they don't learn about
- 11:45to snug. Look at that.
- 11:48Jesus Christ. Come on.
- 11:49Come to bed, Ian. Come on.
- 11:51Do you know if we were watching this in the 80s we'd only be
- 11:54able to watch episode 5 because all the others were missing?
- 11:57Oh my God, that's a. Crime.
- 12:00That is exciting, Dylan. Did you want to call me Ian?
- 12:04Ian Lavino I. Was hoping you weren't going to
- 12:08notice. Where were they?
- 12:10Discovered Dylan. I don't know, sorry I don't have
- 12:13any more information but I imagine overseas I don't know or
- 12:17no. I think these might have been
- 12:18ones that are in the BFI or something like that so they
- 12:20weren't too far away but only 5 was retained.
- 12:23Or look at the. Overseas, I want to know where
- 12:26that wall piece is. Where is that wall piece?
- 12:29A monstrous panting and wheezing is what the script said about
- 12:32that. That's the last time you was in
- 12:34my bed. Oh, here she is.
- 12:38Sabefa. Look at that.
- 12:39Angelic. She is beautiful though, isn't
- 12:43she? Yes.
- 12:43Do you think she sort of Sabefa and Altos could have been
- 12:47potential companions? I think yeah, possibly, but I
- 12:52think it might have been a bit too Spacey.
- 12:55Yeah, but they sort of feel that like Vinda.
- 12:59Is it Vinda? What is the name?
- 13:01Oh. No, you don't remember Vinda
- 13:03unless you're watching Vinda. That's.
- 13:05The they feel the the Vinda role.
- 13:08Yeah. But I could see like I would be
- 13:12all for them popping in and out of other episodes of the
- 13:15Hartnell era by the end of this. Do you think they're brought in
- 13:19because Hartnell's going to have a holiday?
- 13:21So you need to separate all the regulars and pair them up with
- 13:24other people. He's off to rail or wherever for
- 13:27a couple of weeks with probably with Jack Pitt.
- 13:29As exotic as that you think? Or or Barbara's.
- 13:34Things for Do you think Ian Stewart Black watched this?
- 13:38Because this is a bit like they. It's very much cruising in
- 13:41Macrotera, yeah. And then they're like being.
- 13:44They're in a world where the have it, living in a nice state,
- 13:48but they're actually working down the pit.
- 13:50It is very. I don't.
- 13:52Know if either of you noticed, you know, but they didn't even
- 13:54touch that chicken. I just saw it again and it's
- 13:56still in one piece. Susan would absolutely have a
- 14:00bit of. Chicken.
- 14:01I would have been like the master in the end of time,
- 14:04tearing it apart. I think we get the first ever
- 14:10POV shot. It's got to be.
- 14:14From a human, I know there's a Dalek one, but how often do you
- 14:18have APOV from the companion or the Doctor's point of view?
- 14:21And we get this, and this is John Gauri.
- 14:25John Gauri is still alive, you know.
- 14:28Is he really? He's 92 years old and he
- 14:33directed this and one episode uncredited of the Reign of
- 14:36Terror when the other director Goths.
- 14:39The only thing I know about John Gory is Toby Haddock said.
- 14:42He was a very charming man. And he's done a hand makers.
- 14:46He's not, actually. Is he not?
- 14:48Apparently he went on to do a lot of work though.
- 14:50Like he, he was a a busy director.
- 14:54Yeah, I think he was one of those three people that just
- 14:56passes through Doctor Who and couldn't give a shit about it.
- 14:58That's kind of exciting though. I like it when you get these one
- 15:00shot ones. Because there there is some
- 15:02ambition here. It's not perfect, like there's a
- 15:05lot of bumpy camera work and stuff.
- 15:08It's, I mean, it's not quite a Richard Martin story, though at
- 15:10the same time it's. Competent positions.
- 15:13Reminds me of Dan Zef. Dan.
- 15:18He did POV shots as. Well he did POV shots and he
- 15:22just stayed for one and then couldn't give it.
- 15:24So eerie. I feel like they're looking
- 15:26straight at me, all of them. I don't know if Dan Zef went on
- 15:29to more work. No, John Gory's middle name is
- 15:33Summer. Yeah, yeah.
- 15:39Oh no, look, it's that dirty mug.
- 15:42No, this show though, it is brilliant, isn't it?
- 15:44It's genuinely unnerving and. And the whole room looked dirty
- 15:48behind them as. Well, something about you just
- 15:50want to get out, but you're sucking.
- 15:52Bug was you're absolutely seeing how they're seeing her and none
- 15:56of them believe her. They're all being a bit hostile.
- 15:58So all the 1st. Person's reaching for a knife
- 16:01of. Course she does.
- 16:02That's what she does every episode.
- 16:04So the first part of the episode was recorded before dinner and
- 16:07then the second part after. So during dinner, all the set
- 16:09hands came in and dirtied it up. I wondered where the Turkey had
- 16:12gone. Didn't.
- 16:14Where have you got this from? I'm watching it with the
- 16:17production. I love.
- 16:19You production subtitles. Some of.
- 16:22It yeah, some of it, I know. Some of it I am just reading off
- 16:26the screen. Why is it in 60s TV when you're
- 16:29trying to, you know, like shake some sense into people?
- 16:32They genuinely shake people. Like that because.
- 16:36I'll tell you what, if you do that to me, I'll fucking lump
- 16:38ya. Get off me.
- 16:42Oh, have this fabulous dress, Barbara.
- 16:46Oh, we didn't comment on how much the Doctor was fuming when
- 16:48Susan asks for a dress. He's, he's doing that sort of
- 16:53paternal thing of like, don't drink all the fruit juice, my
- 16:56dear. Barbara may want some when she
- 16:57wakes up. Barbara's the only one that's
- 17:02talking sense, as usual. Now this isn't from the from the
- 17:08production subtitles, but John Gauri directed a few episodes of
- 17:12Out of the Unknown and the music from these episodes, because
- 17:15it's library music, shows up and Out of the Unknown.
- 17:17Quite a lot. I really like the music in this
- 17:20story. It's the same fellow who did
- 17:22Unearthly Child, isn't it? Is it really wherever that stock
- 17:25music's from? Yeah.
- 17:29And it's all sort of strings and things and.
- 17:31And Windows really off and like, it's just very experimental.
- 17:36Did you just see how Altos was staring at us out of the camera
- 17:39very aggressively like that? Yeah.
- 17:41I felt as if I was about to be raped.
- 17:46He's a bit of a queen, old Altos, isn't it?
- 17:49There's something about him. I don't mind that.
- 17:51Yeah, a bit. Rubbish thighs, don't you worry.
- 17:54Oh look at this lovely set. Look down the stairs. 2 levels.
- 17:58Go on, get behind the wall, Barbara.
- 18:00They'll never see you behind the wall.
- 18:03Oh, she isn't a dirty old dress. Look.
- 18:05Look what they put her in. Again, this set could quite
- 18:08happily be in the Romans or the Massacre or anything like that.
- 18:12It just looks. Like or Name of the Doctor?
- 18:19Yeah, that's what, a grainy dark look about black and white
- 18:23though. I just think the sets do look
- 18:25more expensive and when we go into colour and everything's
- 18:28very clear in the studios in in the 70s and the. 80s I think the
- 18:33part we are largely looks dreadful like.
- 18:36It's. 80s is hit and miss. Yeah, it's.
- 18:39In it's a lovely dreadful though, isn't it?
- 18:41Because it's so colour? Yeah, I find it well, more
- 18:45boring yet from like 76 onwards and it's a bit more clinical and
- 18:50dried up. You know, if I went on a grinder
- 18:52date, right, and someone turned up with two knobs and massive
- 18:55balls and all that, I'll be so happy.
- 18:57Look at those grains. Look at them.
- 19:01You say a grinder date. It's not really a date, is it?
- 19:04Where you. Go to get fisted?
- 19:06No, that's true. That's true.
- 19:08You weren't disappointed when I turned up?
- 19:11No, you bought some myth makers with you.
- 19:14Best way to wank? Oh, sorry.
- 19:18There's got to be better ways to wank.
- 19:20I can't imagine a better job. No.
- 19:25Nicholas Briggs is very stimulating.
- 19:28I can't imagine a better job, you know, than making brains in
- 19:31jars for TV. Whoever, whoever had that role.
- 19:34Many years ago when the Quiz of Rasalon used to be in a pub,
- 19:38they did a Bake Off and I made a delegate from the master plan
- 19:42and they were going to do another one.
- 19:44But fucking COVID happened and I was going to do the brains in
- 19:46the jars. I bought the, I bought the, I
- 19:48bought the glass jar because you just do the cake and then I was
- 19:51just going to get 2 sticks and put some like icing around them
- 19:54and then some eyes on top. If you do that, could we cover
- 19:57it on too hot for TV as a as a thing?
- 20:00What would the too hot for TV Bake Off?
- 20:02Yeah, you've we've never done a cake.
- 20:04Before no, because it's on TV. It's got to be something from BV
- 20:08or something, doesn't it? It's, well, yeah, very.
- 20:10Cakes not being on TV sadly. Cakes are very visual things
- 20:14though, I think, and tasting, they're two things that you
- 20:17can't really get across on a podcast.
- 20:19Dylan, I'm just going to say this, Roy, because I know you do
- 20:21love me. Yeah.
- 20:22Should you turn up at my house at the beginning of December
- 20:25with a morphton Brain Christmas cake, well, our love affair will
- 20:30go on forever more, OK? I don't like Christmas cakes.
- 20:33Oh, OK, boom. This is it.
- 20:37We'll see Davis ruin them for me.
- 20:39No, I'm much more into a yuletide log.
- 20:44It's very famous fact that Richard E Grant has a I've said
- 20:47this before, after I've said it. Forget it.
- 20:52There'll be somebody that hasn't listened to that.
- 20:54So what does he have every day, every week?
- 20:56And every day he buys them in stock.
- 20:58Yeah. I'm sorry, I'm bewitched by this
- 21:01scene. I've never seen anything like
- 21:04it, says Hartnell. Doctor Who discovers cups?
- 21:09Excuse me if those books are kept going in the 80s like.
- 21:12Yeah, you could see Michael Gray taking that clip.
- 21:14It'd be like, look at this, doctor doesn't even know what a
- 21:18chip is. Yeah, so how did Sabifa end up
- 21:23here then? Does she go ahead to find all
- 21:26the keys? Yeah, she's got, she's got.
- 21:28Kidnapped hasn't. She well thought through this,
- 21:30isn't it? It's really well thought
- 21:32through. Are they going to pick up this
- 21:35ragtag bunch as they go from place to place or this is it
- 21:38only people? They don't take Vasil with them,
- 21:40do they? No, right.
- 21:42You know, you know, they are like RTD said about that idea of
- 21:48doing a big budget sequel to a classic story.
- 21:51And I think he initially said the arcing space, they sort of
- 21:54don't repair it to Mars. I would do the velvet web.
- 21:58I would honestly do the velvet web.
- 22:00Imagine the scale with like a good real good budget, comparing
- 22:04a beautiful world and in the same spot, an absolute ruin.
- 22:08Doing the PV shots through the Doctor and Companion's eyes as
- 22:11one of them's brainwashed, keeping them, keeping the brains
- 22:15of more obviously. Exactly how they are, but
- 22:17enormous. But massive, yeah.
- 22:21RTD still needs to figure out how to do big budget full stop,
- 22:24let alone. Are you seeing more money on the
- 22:29screen here then Dylan? I mean I wonder if you tracked
- 22:32for inflation which one would cost more.
- 22:34This or the fucking 73 steps or whatever it is.
- 22:39Oh, you bitch. Yeah, no, but wouldn't it?
- 22:43What? Like imagine if a season 2
- 22:45episode is a sequel to this. Yeah, no, I mean, I like how the
- 22:50brains pulse. I'm not, I'm not watching that.
- 22:52I. I would want the whole story
- 22:55though, not just episode. 2 written by Terry Nation, the
- 22:58estate. Yeah, no.
- 23:00John Peel, on behalf of Terry Nation, Nicholas Continuity
- 23:07Bridge would do it. He loves Terry Nation.
- 23:10Yeah. Do you know what really
- 23:11surprised me though? So I know we we said a few times
- 23:15the void of return, they really haven't returned all that much
- 23:17as you'd expect in spin off media for the second big
- 23:21monster. And I went out my way to see if
- 23:25Marinus had ever returned in some way.
- 23:27And it hasn't really like you've got the world shapers where they
- 23:30just say it is, but. Yeah, the World Shapers is the
- 23:33one where they become Cybermen. Right.
- 23:35Yeah, yeah. But there's not like a, there's
- 23:36not a another, there's not a book or a sequel or anything
- 23:40where you actually go and explore Marinus.
- 23:43It hasn't returned recently, but they're all over the fucking
- 23:45annuals and comics, weren't they?
- 23:48It I looked it up and it said they appeared in some sort of
- 23:50Titan comic where the war doctors stood on and it's the
- 23:53last day of the time where the war doctors stood on Marinus and
- 23:56a Dalek ship crashes on the Joe shaking his head.
- 24:01But like, but I'd expect because this, because this is a proper
- 24:04world and it is really sort of interested.
- 24:07I I thought there'd be at least a book or something set on
- 24:11Marinus. Rapey violence towards women
- 24:16alert. I do not like that he was
- 24:18throwing Barbara around and then strangling.
- 24:20Her not, not for the first time, and.
- 24:22Maybe Robert Holmes had a point. But also that you know this,
- 24:27this is not the most rapey, violent towards women person in
- 24:30this story. But also like, it's sick.
- 24:34Sabitha stools Altos and then Barbara does some Kung Fu shit.
- 24:40You know, woman power. They are, they are very adept,
- 24:45the ladies in this, but I just don't like seeing women being
- 24:48thrown around. Oh yeah, yeah, that's for.
- 24:51But then, you know, I'll say that about two sin robots of
- 24:54death when she's being strangled.
- 24:55Sarah and pyramidism last night. I just don't like singing
- 24:58violence towards women. The two swat is good.
- 25:01That's APOV shot. Well, that's a robot doing it,
- 25:04so it's a bit different. I think we've now just talked
- 25:07about all the POV shots in Doctor Who.
- 25:09That's about it. Now it's no what about the
- 25:11little green creature in Battlefield that pushes the
- 25:14Doctor over? The Dalek in remembrance there's
- 25:18loads. The Verboids, the POV's, Yeah,
- 25:20verbivoids. Can I ask you though, what are
- 25:24the brains trying to achieve here?
- 25:26They. Sort of lured them in with nice
- 25:29riches and then once they're fully under the spell they send
- 25:32them off to some sort of mine to mine some energy for them.
- 25:37Something like termination of mines.
- 25:39OK, it makes sense. You know that maze on the wall
- 25:43in Deaf to the Daleks? Do you remember?
- 25:46I do remember. It looks a bit like that brain,
- 25:47doesn't it? You can sort of trace the steps.
- 25:52Technically a PV shot in Deaf to the Daleks.
- 25:54Zoom in on the floor. I like, I like how the brains
- 25:57throb. Make of that what you will.
- 25:59No, I do as well because they could, they could be static, but
- 26:03someone's gone in there and gone.
- 26:04No, let's make these a bit. More real the vord also show up
- 26:09in Doctor and the Daleks, the Cadet Sweet Cards where they
- 26:12have a ball with the Daleks and in the Doctor Who annual the
- 26:15fishermen of. Cander Linga.
- 26:18That sounds amazing. Cander Linga, did you say the?
- 26:23Fishy men of cunny Lingus. Oh.
- 26:25Watch Barbara now smash in the jar.
- 26:28Go for it. But Mario?
- 26:32She misses quite a few of them. I love the way that the one
- 26:35thing goes limp. Have you ever had a moment like
- 26:38that? You.
- 26:38Know when? It really shouldn't.
- 26:40But you asked Drew. One too many beer.
- 26:46I mean my boss. Doesn't come back.
- 26:48No, no. We'll write it, then Big Finish,
- 26:51you'll make it. There's a book coming out next
- 26:54year of sequels. Isn't it immediately after?
- 26:57Yeah, basically my idea but. What the fuck?
- 27:01Who was the doctor during that whole climax of this episode?
- 27:05He just walked in and went, oh, so you thought it all, have you?
- 27:07He's on the Turkey. He.
- 27:09Went for a poo there. At the same time.
- 27:16It's a classic Hartnell move. I wouldn't like to have seen a
- 27:20bit of like, what do you mean they're coming with us?
- 27:22We're the companions here, OK? Yeah.
- 27:26Yeah, but they're probably like, I'd want to spend time with
- 27:29Altos and Sabitha over some grumpy old man.
- 27:33Is this a bit where he says I'm just going to go off to episode
- 27:355, they'll see you later? Ian doesn't feel threatened by
- 27:41Altos, you know. Yeah, he's not going after
- 27:44Barbara. Do you know that's exactly how I
- 27:46imagined Jeremy Fitz Oliver to look like Altos, you know, don't
- 27:50you think? Is there anyone Ian be
- 27:52threatened by? No, that's a lot you're talking
- 27:56about, Yeah. No, he's he's indestructible.
- 27:59Yeah, have you seen? Him maybe?
- 28:01Halt the 10th Doctor, that's a no.
- 28:06But he he beat him just through dignity.
- 28:10Yeah. How do you feel about these sort
- 28:14of in story explanations of why people are going on holiday?
- 28:18So every now and again it is a little bit.
- 28:21And we've got to stop thinking about this like Doctor Ephans.
- 28:25Nobody noticed at the time. I when I was when I watched this
- 28:29for the first time, I didn't notice because I didn't know
- 28:30people took holidays and this is the one where.
- 28:34Did you think Doctor Fucking Who was for two episodes then?
- 28:37This is the world. It really doesn't matter because
- 28:40like Ian and Bob would just carry it in three and four that
- 28:44you. I didn't even notice he's off
- 28:47doing something at the end isn't.
- 28:49It well, that's put me in my place then, hasn't it?
- 28:51I won't ask you guys any. Questions.
- 28:52I think it's a stupid criticism. It does my idea.
- 28:55It was a question, not a criticism.
- 28:58I think he's gone to law school, hasn't he, to determine to learn
- 29:01how to defend Ian? Oh, those scenes are just
- 29:05sublime. You know when he's reenacting
- 29:07the scene of the crime with his cane?
- 29:09I love it. I suppose I am a bit of an
- 29:11advocate for Doctor Light episodes, but and if you get to
- 29:14spend more time just seeing the, seeing the companions without
- 29:17the Doctor around does give them an extra dimension.
- 29:20I think when the Doctor dips out of the action, it's almost like
- 29:24a test. Can the companions carry the
- 29:27show and knowing times that I tell it works?
- 29:30And it's more threatening. For them, Steven does in the
- 29:32massacre, Jamie and Zoe do in the scenes of death.
- 29:35Like a lot of the times when it happens the regulars.
- 29:37Are good enough. It's more threatening for the
- 29:39companions because they haven't got the doctors to rely on.
- 29:41And then when the doctor comes back, it's like, Oh yeah, he's
- 29:44back. Oh God, here we go, the
- 29:47shrieking wench, that's what. The next step?
- 29:49Go. Away, go away.
- 29:53You're not hysterical enough. Go away.
- 29:56So did you see recently that it was discovered that her contract
- 30:01it wasn't that she said she was typecast.
- 30:02Her contract was not renewed by the BBC.
- 30:04That's. What the official paper was told
- 30:06me that but yes. Richard Molesworth or Bignell,
- 30:09whoever does those production desert Diaries of like all the
- 30:12old paperwork, they uncovered it and she did not quit.
- 30:16They did not renew her because she's shit.
- 30:18There was a there was quite an early correspondence with Verity
- 30:22Lambert that said we don't want her to continue beyond what
- 30:26she's been contracted for, so they knew she wasn't working.
- 30:31I like her. More than more than more in
- 30:34O'Brien is Vicky. And more in O'Brien isn't the
- 30:38better actress, but I think because it's a strange, it's a
- 30:42strange alien granddaughtery figure.
- 30:46She's not a strange, alienly granddaughter.
- 30:48I I find. What's in Episode 1?
- 30:50I find she's. Got.
- 30:52She's got a. Sensor, She's got a.
- 30:53Strange face. She acts a bit strange, like.
- 30:56That's just her acting. It's not not just another human
- 31:01alongside two other humans, which is what it starts to
- 31:03become. Yeah, she's less than human, if
- 31:06anything. But then.
- 31:07Vicky is how could you be so cruel?
- 31:09Vicky is another human alongside two other humans.
- 31:12Yeah, she's and the dynamics much better it.
- 31:14Kicks ass. I know there's something very.
- 31:17Dodo's better than her. There's something for Joe Dodo
- 31:20does not get the credit for how well she can play the piano and
- 31:26she's unbelievable in the gunfires, like sight reading
- 31:30music off the bat. Wow, I.
- 31:34Fucking love Dodo, I think she's really underrated.
- 31:38I would have given her two seasons.
- 31:40Yeah, agreed. She's.
- 31:42A bit like she's got the same sort of amount of character as
- 31:46Clara, but it's fun. She's just always.
- 31:49Poking her nose in and you know, like going up to the villains
- 31:52and asking them are they the villain?
- 31:54Even if her nose is dripping with a cold, she's poking it in.
- 31:58The news is running well, guys. Look, we're out of the velvet
- 32:05web now. Where are we going next?
- 32:07The screaming jungle? Go ahead, go away.
- 32:13Can I ask you fellas how many screaming jungles you've seen in
- 32:16your? Time one or two.
- 32:19Yeah. Luke's gone very quiet.
- 32:22I'm staying out of this. I'm going to cut it, cut it
- 32:25there.
