- 3:28saloon on a backstreet. So, yeah, you finally hit it in bunny.
- 3:32Yeah. Three years have been playing their numbers and doing nothing but lose.
- 3:37But today, oh boy, fifty thousand dot? Which numbers? Was?
- 3:40You're playing? Benny Duke Dawsen's your lucky combe the Dukes. He's a
- 3:45square shooter, always pays off on the nose when you win. He's a
- 3:49great guy, the Duke. You think it's safe to go around telling everybody
- 3:52you want to let dough, there's something might happen to you before you get
- 3:54to spend it. I ain't no fool, butch. I ain't told only
- 3:59a couple of mom and the dude could want me to tell him. He
- 4:02likes to have the guys know he pays when he loses. Fifty grand all
- 4:08mine. Gee, I can't believe it yet. Yeah, but as long
- 4:12as you got it in your pocket, it's easy to believe it. Yeah,
- 4:15you're right there. Well, it's a long time. I gotta be
- 4:18getting on home. I ain't got to tell the old lady. We're rich
- 4:21now on cheevy tickle. So long, Benny, don't spend it all on
- 4:27the way home. Spend it all. Hey, you can't spend that much
- 4:31dough without you do some thinking about it. Fifty grand. That dude's a
- 4:38swell guy. Ever, lets a fellow down. When you got the winning
- 4:42ticket, you know you got to go. Oh it's you, glad to
- 4:47see you. Haw's a boy. I got your luck, Benny. When
- 4:50he congratulate you, Oh, yeah, thanks, the best luck I've had
- 4:55in years. Got it with you? I suppose sure I got it with
- 4:58me. You don't think I. Hey, put down that gun. You
- 5:00can't stow fifty thanks, pal, which, together with the evidence already set
- 5:18forth above, proved conclusively about the man Nick. Not so fast. I
- 5:24can't keep up with you. What's the matter, Patsy? Got cramps in
- 5:27your fingers? No, no, Nigga's not that. We've been working on
- 5:30this report for over three hours without stopping. I can't keep it up all
- 5:33day. All right, Patsy, let's rest for a few minutes. It
- 5:38wouldn't be so anxious to finish this week before it, said Nicholas Cotter's office.
- 5:44Hello, pussy is Nick clear? Oh yes, Lieutenant, just a
- 5:46minute? Thanks? Hello, Riley. What's on the royal mind this evening?
- 5:50I know, Nick, lay off the kidna a minute. Just because
- 5:53you're called the masterminding all the yellow journals in the city, don't mean the
- 5:56tie ride? All right, Riley, I withdraw my rewind. What's wrong
- 6:00with the world now? Just a murder, Nick, Just a murder.
- 6:02Nothing new about a murder, Riley? Why'd drag me in now? Nick?
- 6:05I'm asking you as their personal fever? Will you give me your hand
- 6:09on this. If we don't get this one solved and solved quick, the
- 6:11commission is going to be done on It's like a ton of bricks. What's
- 6:14the special about this particular murder? Meet me in front of seven five six
- 6:17Brownly Avenue as soon as you can, and I'll tell you all about it.
- 6:20What do you say, Riley? It's after eleven now? Can I
- 6:24wait until tomorrow? Nick? It can't. We got to get to it
- 6:26right now. Will you meet me? All right? Meet you then five
- 6:30or ten minutes? Thanks Nick, and I'll be seeing you so long?
- 6:31So long? Who going? Yes, Patsy, We're going to have a
- 6:35look at somebody who just suddenly and violently passed out of this world. Get
- 6:39your hat and let's go there. Nick. But how are you? Patsy?
- 6:49Okay, thanks, lieutenant. Where's the remains? Rallying? Right over
- 6:51here? Nick? Just the way my men found him, I see two
- 6:57shots right through the heart. Never knew what hit him. Looks as if
- 7:00they might have come from a forty five? Right? Nick? All right?
- 7:03Rolly? Who is in? Why should I care? His name's Benny
- 7:06Smith. He's one of the characters that hang around the edge of the underworld.
- 7:10No record, but a great guy for playing the numbers. He's been
- 7:13playing them since they were tarted, and I think that's what killed him.
- 7:16Oh now, Lieutenant, how could the numbers kill him? Benny connected today?
- 7:19Patsy. He won himself fifty thousand dollars and they had it on him
- 7:24when he started home, they tell me. But he ain't got a cent
- 7:26of it. Now. He's as clean as a whistle. Very interesting,
- 7:30Probably talk too much about his luck? Why do I come in? Benny
- 7:33played Duke Dawson's numbers. Nick and Dukes had two heavy winners this month.
- 7:39Both of them were killed in the same way before they got home and both
- 7:43of them lost their roles. Once could be a play and hold up,
- 7:46but twice it's like a regular thing, and I want to find out the
- 7:49killing's like this has got as tough. That's where you come in, Nick,
- 7:53I need some of your fancy ideas on how to stop them. Lucky
- 7:56Coombs runs the other numbers game, doesn't he? Yeah? Yeah, him
- 7:59and the due you who have been at each other's through us for the last
- 8:01six months. Maybe Lucky think this is a good way to persuade the public
- 8:05that if you win with the Duke, you don't live to spend what you
- 8:07win. It could be Nick, and it could be Tool that the Duke
- 8:09needs the coin bad enough to want to get advance. I'd hate to play
- 8:13any numbers game where I had to lose my life when I want any money.
- 8:16Has no percentage in the numbers game. From any point of view,
- 8:18Patsy, it's a suckers game. Well, Riley, why do you want
- 8:22me to start? Good for you? Nick? I knew you couldn't stay
- 8:24out of it, But what do you say we go to call on the
- 8:28Duke and see what he's got to say for himself. Okay, Rilly,
- 8:30you drive on ahead. We'll follow you. I don't let the cops catch
- 8:33your speeding. Never was in a place like this before, and you probably
- 8:46won't ever want to be again. Patsy is a piano the only music there
- 8:50is. Yes, Well, Steve Corey is a good piano player. None
- 8:52better. He not only is a good piano player, he also serves as
- 8:56a lookout for the Duke. See how the piano is right at the foot
- 8:58of the stairs the second floor. Well, that's where the Duke's officers are,
- 9:03and no one can get up there without Steve seeing it. Oh,
- 9:05he signals ahead with his piano. Let the Duke know whether it's a friend
- 9:09or an enemy who's coming up? Hey, how do you know so much
- 9:11about this place? Nick? Oh? I get around righty now and then,
- 9:13and I suppose it's Steve signals that it's the wrong kind of company coming
- 9:16to call. They get the wrong kind of reception. That's about it,
- 9:20Patsy, Hi, Steve Duke in, Yeah, go on up. Hey,
- 9:26what do you smoke in that pipe of yours? Old cabbage leaves,
- 9:31shoe leather? It smells like the deuce whatever it is. One, Come
- 9:35on, Nick, we got to be moving right, which is his office?
- 9:48He Nick, good one here, it's funny. Try the door.
- 9:56Maybe he's not in there. It must be. He told us to come
- 10:00up, and I can see there's a light inside. Maybe there's something wrong,
- 10:05like, let's here, have a look, Dawson. I think we
- 10:07better come on. Come with me. Now, come on again again.
- 10:11I got breaking it, Rally, breaking it? You hurt? Raley?
- 10:18No? Did he get you? No? What's going on in here?
- 10:20Nothing? Now, Patsy can come in. He look at your Nick,
- 10:24dead capt right through the forehead. Is that the duke, asked Patsy.
- 10:28That was the duke? Hey, Look that's where the killer went back through
- 10:30that window there, yes, and down the fire escape below. There's a
- 10:35dozen ways he could have gone. We'd never see him. If we'd only
- 10:37gotten in a little sooner, Nick, that wouldn't have made any difference,
- 10:39Raley. I suppose not. He was out to get the Duke, and
- 10:43he had gotten them anyway, And it was just as easy for the killer
- 10:46to get out on the fire escape and wait for us. The good thing
- 10:48he was a poor shot. He'd both be dead. I don't think so,
- 10:50Betsy, What do you mean? Look how high as bullets went up
- 10:54above the door there. We think he was just trying to scare us.
- 10:56Nake looks that way, and they shoot straighter than that. Now we've got
- 11:01two murders to solve instead of one. Yes, I'm beginning to get interested
- 11:05in this. Now, let's see what the duke can tell us about this.
- 11:13Duke had no weapons, so he apparently wasn't expecting an attack. Must
- 11:16have known the man who killed him. Hey, Nick, I thought the
- 11:20Duke didn't smoke. He didn't. There's an awful lot of burned matches here
- 11:24in this ash tray for a guy who don't smoke, and they're all burned
- 11:28pretty well down too. And here's a cigarette, but it's you a door.
- 11:35I never heard of that brand, mate, Very few people smoke them.
- 11:37And Lucky Coombs is one of them. Lucky Cools. Maybe he doesn't.
- 11:43Let's not jump too fast. I'll just take this, but and these
- 11:46matches along with me. They may come in handy before were through. I
- 11:50better call headquarters and get some of the boys up here right while you take
- 11:54care of this. And if it Patsy, now'll go and call Unlucky.
- 11:56Maybe he can tell us something about this. Okay, Nick, but be
- 11:58careful Luck. He's a tough fete. I will I know how to handle
- 12:01him. Oh, Steve, Yeah, did the Duke have many callers tonight?
- 12:16No? No, how about Lucky Coombs? He wasn't away here,
- 12:20was he? Yeah? Yeah, he was? What of it? Nothing?
- 12:28Maybe? By the way, you better get this crowd out of here.
- 12:31The Duke's been murdered. This place is going to be filled A copp
- 12:33reporter's photographer's fingerprint meant a detective in about ten minutes, duke murdered. Yeah,
- 12:39so long, Steve, Come on, Betsy, Let's see what Lucky
- 12:43has to say. Eleven please. Oh I thought to put an end of
- 12:58the numbers racket in the town, Nick for a while. Anyway, with
- 13:01the Duke dead and Lucky in jail for his murder, maybe, but let's
- 13:05not get ahead of ourselves. Oh, Thatt, just stay in the car
- 13:11outside, maybe go in someplace Clintford. Why, yes, that's a friendly
- 13:16visit. I want to see Lucky a minute. Lucky, he's not receiving
- 13:20tonight, not cops anyways, I'm no cop. It's one of friendly talk
- 13:26with him. Well you can't, no, I think I can. Well
- 13:33me and my buddy here is gonna see that you're down. We sure you
- 13:37got a search warrant? Have you? Oh? You want to see my
- 13:41search warrant? Do you well? Here A damn yeah, and I'm gonna
- 13:46drudge you fall well. Nick seems to be having difficulty into sea Lucky.
- 14:01Does this mean Lucky is the man who killed the duke? And what's Nick
- 14:03going to do about it? We'll see in just a moment. Ladies,
- 14:07here's a bit of news about homemaking that means a better looking home and more
- 14:11time for you to enjoy it. To give your floors a lustrous finish without
- 14:16bothersome rubbing, use LINEX self polishing wax, the time saving work saving liquid
- 14:20finished for all floor surfaces, wood, tile, or linoleum. The finish
- 14:24which is glossy yet not slippery. LINEX self polishing wax remains resistant to slip
- 14:31even when water is spilled on it, and provides additional slip resistance with each
- 14:35additional coat of wax. These facts have been proved by the Underwriter's laboratories,
- 14:39whose seal appears on every bottle. LINEX self polishing wax gives a tough,
- 14:45elastic finish because it really contains wax, the highest possible content of genuine carnaval
- 14:50wax. And when the most used parts of your floor show where they may
- 14:54be rewaxed without going over the whole floor. So remember always ask for the
- 14:58lick liquid wax, which is easy to apply, which dries easily to a
- 15:03lustrous finish that resists dirt, wear and water, and is not slippery to
- 15:07walk on. It's Linux l I N dash x LINEX self polishing wax.
- 15:15You'll find it at your nearest paint, hardware or department store. You're headquarters
- 15:18for all three great Linux home brighteners and KEM tone. And now back to
- 15:28our story. We left Nick fighting it out with one of Lucky Kum's gunmen
- 15:31as he tried to get into Sea Lucky to question him about the killing of
- 15:35Duke Dawson. I'm gonna try yourself. Well, shut my hand off.
- 15:39You're all right. I just knocked your gun out of your hand. That's
- 15:41all here. I'll take it, and just to be sure, i'll take
- 15:46your pal gun too. Now you'll both be good little boys. I won't
- 15:50tell Lucky on you. Oh hello, Lucky, I've enjoyed meeting your welcoming
- 15:56committee sometimes very ambition get the better of the common sense. They told me
- 16:03it was you coming up, Cutter. I would have advised them to let
- 16:04you in and see themselves a headache. Here your boys pop gun, give
- 16:10them back to them after I go. You can come out now, Patty,
- 16:14Well after daily doesn't for this evening. I always enjoy watching you exercise.
- 16:18It does need so much good. What can I do for you,
- 16:22Cutter? I suppose you know Benny Smith was killed tonight, right after he
- 16:26collected the fifty thousand he won in Duke Dawson's numbers game. Yeah, I
- 16:30heard about that. You don't think I had anything to do with that,
- 16:33do you? And did you also hear that Duke Dawson himself was murdered a
- 16:37little while later, So you think you can pin that on me? We
- 16:44found one of your cigarettes half smoked in the ashtray on the Duke's desk,
- 16:48Lucky Well, and the Duke didn't smoke. Not three people in the city
- 16:52smoke your brand. How did your cigarette get in the Duke's astray n cigarette?
- 17:00You could easily be held for the murder and the evidence we have,
- 17:03Lucky, But I suppose you have an alibi. If so, let's have
- 17:07it. Well, why and then that of my apartment will even no alibi?
- 17:15Well, well that's very interesting. No alibi and a shame to admit
- 17:19it. Then he must be the one. If you think I did it,
- 17:22why don't you run me in? No, Lucky, we're not going
- 17:25to run you in. But you will stick around, won't you, just
- 17:27in case we need you for a witness or something. Oh, make surely
- 17:30you're not going to let him go? Why not? You will stick around,
- 17:33Lucky? Yeah? Fine, Yeah, I'll stick around. Then let
- 17:41me know when you need me for something. Thanks, I will Well,
- 17:44good night, Lucky. Mo On, Passy, let's be going. Why
- 17:59is it quiet, Bessy? You haven't said a word since we left Lucky's.
- 18:02Well, I can't understand it. Nick, You have what looks like
- 18:04good reason to believe Lucky killed the duke, and you let him go.
- 18:07That makes sense to me. Why, Patsy, That's all part of my
- 18:11plan. I think I have the answer to both killings now, and leaving
- 18:15Lucky loose is part of my way of proving it. And I suppose that
- 18:18phone call you made after we left Lucky's was part of your plan. Too
- 18:22right, Bessy, all part of my plan? And did your phone call
- 18:25accomplish what you hoped it would? Aida did? Patsy, and Aida did?
- 18:29I asked what it was you may, Oh, Nick, why don't
- 18:32you tell me what's going on? I don't get it at all. I
- 18:34phoned a certain party to get a certain address, and I got it.
- 18:37That's all. You know who the killer is? I think so well that,
- 18:44unfortunately I am not prepared to divulge at this precise moment. Oh Nick,
- 18:56Well, here we are, here, we are ware the address I
- 19:00got on the phone. It's the third house up there, the rooming house.
- 19:03And what do we do there now? Patsy, listening carefully what I
- 19:07tell you? I'm going inside that house alone, Yes, alone, And
- 19:11as soon as I do, I want you to go to the phone and
- 19:15the drug store across the street and phone Riley. He'll be back at headquarters
- 19:18by this time. Tell him to come up here just as fast as he
- 19:21can. I may need him. Tell him to bring some of his men
- 19:23in the hurry up wagon, but not to use the siren when he gets
- 19:26here. Tell him to wait out here with you until I come out,
- 19:30or if I don't come out, tell him to rush in after me,
- 19:33just as soon as he hears gunshots, Nick, haven't you better wait until
- 19:36he gets here before you go in there? You can't do it, Patsy.
- 19:38I've got to get inside before the next visitor does. That's the important
- 19:41part of my plan. Now you have a straight I think so good.
- 19:45I'm counting on you, Patsy. Don't fail me. I'll wish me luck.
- 19:51I may need it. Oh, who's there? Nick? Carter?
- 20:08Got a few questions. I'd like to ask him questions. Yes, I'm
- 20:14alone. Well, I see you're packing your suitcase. Steve, you weren't
- 20:22getting ready to leave town with you? What if I was? You shouldn't
- 20:26do that. We might need your testimony and clearing up Duke Dawson's murder.
- 20:33You're the only witness we have to testify that Lucky Komb's called on the Duke
- 20:37just before he was murdered. Yeah, that's that's why I'm getting out.
- 20:41I'm not staying here to be taken for a ride by Lucky's guerrillas. And
- 20:44that's what it happened to me. If I said anything against him, you
- 20:47won't be taken for a ride by Lucky's gun, and I'll guarantee you that
- 20:49I ain't taking out chances. Yeah, got a match? Sure, thanks,
- 20:57still smoking old babbage leaves in that pipe of yours. I see why
- 21:02don't you try to back of for it? Chain? I ain't taking no
- 21:06more writing from you, no from nobody. Okay, Steve? Oh do
- 21:11you mind if I keep this match? You just used? What do you
- 21:15want it for? I think I can use it? Hey, what's going
- 21:18on here? Carter? What can you use a pointing match for? For
- 21:21one thing, I can use it to send you to jail. To jail,
- 21:26yes, for murder. You won't send me to jail for murder.
- 21:29Up that gun, Steve, Yeah, that's not from you. Give me
- 21:30that die. I will give me that. I didn't have to break my
- 21:41arm, did you? Lucky for me? You're shot in a hurry.
- 21:44Otherwise you might have got me somewhere else and just in the pleasure part of
- 21:45my arm. Oh, let's see what's in that suitcase? Are you keep
- 21:51on saying where you are? Steve? I've got the gun. Now set
- 21:55out on a chair. I'll be quiet. Huh. Quite a nice roll
- 22:03of bills you have here, at least fifty thousand dollars, I should say,
- 22:07by the size of the roll, eh, what's it to you?
- 22:08It was a nice racket you were working, Steve. Whenever the Duke paid
- 22:11off any big money, you knew who got the money, laid for them
- 22:15and killed him. The Duke knew it was bad business to have his winners
- 22:18killed that way, So somehow he must have gotten wise to you, probably
- 22:22by having someone trail Benny, someone who saw you kill him. So he
- 22:25called you in to have a talk with you, and you killed him,
- 22:27and he true, I didn't. I didn't. Lucky Coombs did it.
- 22:30That's so we'll see what Lucky has to say when you tell him that he'll
- 22:36be here in a few minutes. If I'm not mistaken. No, No,
- 22:37I couldn't. He'd kill me. He killed Stay where you are.
- 22:41I'll stand behind the door, you daddy, double crossing rad That's enough.
- 22:45Lucky got that gun? Is he is? He? Did you kill him?
- 22:56No? I just shot him through the shoulder. The shot knocked him
- 22:59out. He'll live to go to the electric chair with you. A right,
- 23:07all right, it's all right, everything's under control. Goodness, all
- 23:10right, Riley, there are your two murderers, Steve in the chair and
- 23:12Lucky on the floor. Glory, b yes, Rally, two of them.
- 23:17You better get your handcuffs on them before they decide to run out of
- 23:18here and do just that. Now we find friend Steve, hold out your
- 23:22hand and you Lucky, you can't help. Basically, just put them on
- 23:26your your fleet and right when you wake up. Then it was Lucky,
- 23:32Nick, Yes, Bessie, Lucky and Steve together. This is a great
- 23:36day for the police department. Two men killed and the two murderers caught.
- 23:41Lieutenant, are you giving all the credit to the police department, It seems
- 23:44to me. No, No, no, of course not. I just
- 23:47meant it all right, Rally, it's all right. My part of it
- 23:48is, John, your precious police department can have all the glory if they
- 23:52want it. You tell me about it, How did they do it,
- 23:55and who killed who? I'll meet you down at your office and half an
- 23:57hour and give you all the details the evidence you need. Right now,
- 24:00I want to get my arm fixed it. Oh, Nick, you're her?
- 24:03Is it bad? Let me get a doctor quick. It's not serious,
- 24:06Patsy. It's just a flesh one and it's rather painful. I like
- 24:08to get it taken care of. Come on, Betsy, I guess you
- 24:11would have to drive. I'll see you later. Rally. Well that feels
- 24:26better. Good. Doctor's a wonderful paying when you need him. And doctor
- 24:30Sturgees is as good a man as there is. And now, mister Carter,
- 24:33I want to hear all about it? Oh, Patsy, can't you
- 24:36wait until we get to Rally's office. I don't want to go through the
- 24:38story twice, nik Kotta. If you don't give me all the details right
- 24:41here and now, I'll stop this car and we won't move an inch until
- 24:45you decide to tell me what I want to know. All right, all
- 24:48right, you're a hard woman, miss Boone. I guess i'll have to
- 24:51give in. Well, what do you want to know? First? First,
- 24:55where does Steve come into this? He did the killing? Then what
- 24:59about Lucky? He was the man behind the throne, so to speak.
- 25:02Lucky wanted to cut in on the Duke's customers, so we had the Duke's
- 25:04winners killed. Steve, however, did the actual killing and got most of
- 25:07the money for his reward. And when the Duke caught on to Steve,
- 25:11Steve killed him and double crossed Lucky. How do you mean double crossed?
- 25:15Steve planted one of Lucky cigarettes in the Duke's ash tray. He undoubtedly had
- 25:19some of them from being associated with Lucky, so he just smoked one half
- 25:22way down and left it where we'd be sure to find it. Then who
- 25:26shot at you on, Lieutenant Riley when you broke into the Duke's room earlier
- 25:29this evening? That was Steve? That next Steve was downstairs playing the piano.
- 25:33He was there when we left him, yes, and he was there
- 25:36when we went back. But in between he slipped out the back up the
- 25:38fire escape, fired over our heads as we entered, to make us think
- 25:41the killer was just leaving, and then went back to his piano. He
- 25:45thought he had a perfect alibi. How did you know that it was Steve?
- 25:48By the matches and the ashtray? How could they tell you anything?
- 25:52Patsy? How'd you light a cigarette? Here? Here's a match? Try?
- 25:56Okay? Well, I suppose you'd light the match like this, light
- 26:00your cigarette and put out the match like this exactly. I look at that
- 26:04match you just used, it's only slightly burned at the end. I look
- 26:10at this match which I took from the ashtray that's burned almost all the way
- 26:14down exactly twas he used to light a pipe, not a cigarette, and
- 26:18Steve's a pipe smoker. He probably smoked as he talked to the Duke before
- 26:22he killed him before we got there. You see, Patsy, I knew
- 26:25the Duke was dead when we got there this evening. If you knew Steve
- 26:27did the killings, how did you find out about Lucky? Well? I
- 26:30felt sure Steve wouldn't dare to do it without strong backing, But there was
- 26:33no evidence against Lucky. So that's why I went to him and told him
- 26:37about one of his cigarettes being left in the Duke's astray. And that's also
- 26:40why I didn't want to take him in. Oh no, I see.
- 26:42I felt sure he'd go to see Steve and give himself away, and he
- 26:47did. Nick. I just realized what you said a minute ago. You
- 26:49said you knew that the Duke was dead before you went upstairs to his office
- 26:52to night. How could you possibly know that? Very simple, Patsy,
- 26:56Steve was the Duke's lookout man. He used the piano was a signal.
- 27:00The top key on the piano was wired to a buzzer that sounded in the
- 27:03Duke's room that meant someone was coming up. But when we went up tonight,
- 27:07he didn't hit that note. I watched him carefully, and he didn't
- 27:11hit it because he knew there was no one alive to hear it. He
- 27:15hit the wrong note. I'll say he hit the wrong note in more ways
- 27:18than one. How do you mean, Patsy, Well, considering that tonight
- 27:22you've sold three murders, ended the numbers racket, and recovered the stolen money,
- 27:26I say that Steve hit the wrong note when he tried to fool you.

- 29:02how about next week's adventure? Well? Can the main ingredients of next week's
- 29:06story are a small boy and a sling shot. Well, I didn't know
- 29:10you went in for cases of juvenile delinquency. He doesn't unless you call it
- 29:14juvenile delinquency. When an organized gang of thugs holds up an armored car kills
- 29:18the guards and gets away with thousands of dollars of the bank's money. Well
- 29:22that's a really big time stuff. But where did the small boy and a
- 29:23slingshot come into it? They were the means of my being able to catch
- 29:26the killers, get back the money, and break up the gang. And
- 29:30it gave Nick one of the most unpleasant and dangerous two hours he ever spent.
- 29:33Well, I'll certainly look forward to hearing that. Any further hints,
- 29:37Nick, Oh, that's all for now. Can I'll tell you the rest
- 29:38next time? I call the story the sling Shot Murders or the Mystery of
- 29:44the Broken Window. So long, So long everybody, and so long to
- 29:47you Nick and Patsy. We'll be looking forward to seeing you again next Sunday
- 29:51afternoon. Next week at the same time, listen to another curious experience of

- 30:18and Smith Publications, Incorporated. It is presented at the same time and over
- 30:22these same stations by the three Great Linux Home, Brightness, Linux, clear
- 30:26Glass, Linux cream polish and Linax self polishing wax created by ACME, America's
- 30:33great producer of ACME Quality paints. In the Nick Carter Adventures, Long Clark
- 30:37is starred as Nick. Hellanchote is featured as Patsy. Original music is played
- 30:41by Lou White. The programs are written and directed by Jock McGregor. This
- 30:45is Ken Poul speaking for the thousands of Linux dealers and ACME Quality retail stores
- 30:51all over America and saying, so long until next week. This is mutual
- 30:56welcome back. Well, Acme's the sponsor, and here I and they make
- 31:17pains and here I just thought they made all the gear for Wiley Coyote.
- 31:22We're all pretty strong episode to start things off on the new series with a
- 31:26new sponsor. All right, well, now we turn to some listener comments
- 31:32and feedback, and I have a question from Kevin, who says, very
- 31:41Merry Christmas to you. This was sent on the twenty fifth. First,
- 31:47why are the Adventures of Nick Carter always referred to at the close of each
- 31:51program as the Return of Nick Carter. It's almost like an afterthought. And
- 32:00the answer to the question, Kevin, is Nick Carter was actually and I've
- 32:07mentioned this before, but sometimes maybe I haven't dwelt on it as much.
- 32:13Nick Carter was first a character in pulp fiction. He ran, actually predated
- 32:21Sherlock Holmes by Little Bed and ran from eighteen eighty six to nineteen fifteen,
- 32:27so for nearly thirty years, and then he got a three year revival period,
- 32:34and certainly people went out and they bought these magazines, these pulps by
- 32:40the millions, and certainly a very popular and important figure in de tactive fiction.
- 32:47I don't know some people may have even checked the series out at the
- 32:52library. So of course they used the phrase the return of Nick Carter because
- 32:55they're evoking the fact that this character has his roots in pulp fiction, and
- 33:02he was very popular, and now this great detective is back on the radio,
- 33:07and that's what the returna M. Carter is about. He also shares
- 33:10a link you can go to Kittie Records dot com. That's k I D
- 33:17D I E R E c O R d s dot com and he points
- 33:23to a section under the two thousand and five uploads. This is a website
- 33:30that contains children's records from the Golden Maids so old kids records, and among
- 33:38them is a double feature of read by Bob Bailey, of Yours Truly Johnny
- 33:45Dollar, the Fisherman and the Flounder and the Els and the Shoemaker, and
- 33:53pretty neat. Really would not associate Bob Bailey with that. And there are
- 34:00quite a few of these kid records for those who enjoy that over at kiddirecords
- 34:09dot com. Okay, And also I did want to mention that I have
- 34:16seen another Nick Carter movie. This was actually the third of three chronologically.
- 34:24It doesn't really matter too much because it's not like you have to see one
- 34:30to get the other, though seen the first is kind of helpful just because
- 34:35it introduces his sidekick. This was a film that really was one of those
- 34:43Hollywood efforts introducing the idea fifth columnist ahead of World War Two. It was
- 34:50released in nineteen forty and the title is The Sky Murder, and there's some
- 34:55blackmail and other shenanigans going on, and then a body is found on an
- 35:00airplane compartment and it's up to Nick Carter to solve it. I have to
- 35:05say this was actually a pretty clever mystery, and they had some great action,
- 35:10particularly for a B movie in nineteen forty, but still a little bit
- 35:15of the sense of Screwball, a comedy that was in the first film,
- 35:21and he still has his sidekick, Donald Meek playing the role of Bartholomewle the
- 35:27Beekeeper, and there's was actually a great scene where Bartholomew was fighting the bad
- 35:34guys in this great comic fight scene. It was really just an enjoyable movie.
- 35:38So if you like a Golden age cinema, may want to. If
- 35:42you have Turner Classic Movie and it's on watch it, or you can also
- 35:47purchase the DVD of the Nick Carter Triple Feature, which is what I did.
- 35:52But yeah, I highly recommend it. Sky Marder was just pretty,
- 35:57really entertaining, So a great Nick car movie. Listener comments continue. Comment
