- 0:22We're gonna be talking. I know it's graduation season, folks start thinking of
- 0:26our getting close to the graduations season. Start talking shingles. We're talking about
- 0:30different kind of shingles, actual physical shingles that you hang on your roof.
- 0:33Well, they're going to do that. We're talking about that with Andrew this
- 0:35morning. Andrew, how you doing this week? Doing great? It's beautiful,
- 0:40absolutely beautiful. My grass is green. Yeah, it's been a while
- 0:43since I've seen that. Isn't that amazing? Lots of roofs up. Is
- 0:50it almost like when you start to see dandy lyons coming up? Is that
- 0:53when you start thinking the phones. I know, obviously with Larsen Home Services,
- 0:57you guys are going year round and a lot of stuff going on in
- 1:00ourself services. But it seems like as soon as we start getting into as
- 1:03you mentioned, the lawn greeting up and other things, people really start to
- 1:07turn focus to things like roofs, don't they They do. I mean,
- 1:11it's look, we we work year round, whether it's our insulation or doing
- 1:18gutters, gutter shutter, we install it year round because it does nothing with
- 1:23the roofs. So you know, unless it's super super cold, we're getting
- 1:26a snowstorm, we're out there working. Same with roofing. Honestly, especially
- 1:30this year. I mean we were seeing fifty sixties and I think, did
- 1:34we not hit like seventy degrees in February? We did. We even had
- 1:38a tornado in Fabry, very odd. Yright it's just a strange stranger.
- 1:42Yeah, we're working year round, and you know, one thing I wanted
- 1:45to talk about today is we had somebody email in and ask a question about
- 1:48different types of shingles, and they were specifically asking about steel shingles, and
- 1:53so I thought today'd be kind of a good day to dive into some different
- 1:57types of products that are out there for roofing, different types of materials that
- 2:01are used for roofing, and pros and cons of all of them, and
- 2:07not necessarily just ones that we particularly sell, because there, I mean mostly
- 2:14ninety nine percent of roofs that we drive by have some sort of asphalt shingle
- 2:20on their home, with asphalt shingles with granular rocks on them. Right,
- 2:23That's what I've always had on my roof, shown I know that's what you
- 2:27have on your roof. Phenomenal products and the technology that goes into creating these
- 2:32products has come light years. I can remember when I was a kid,
- 2:38we put a big addition on our house and we got a new roof on
- 2:39our house. And I will not name the manufacturer, but they had tried
- 2:44something else with the felt matting of the shingle, and my parents' shingles lasted
- 2:52eight years, and in eight years all the granule rocks fell off of them.
- 2:55They all curled up, they were shot, they were rotten. But
- 2:59my dad was like, worry, they've got a twenty five year warranty on
- 3:00him. He called in and they sure did. They had a twenty five
- 3:04year warranty and it was pro rated and they said, yes, sir,
- 3:06they're still under warranty. We're going to send you a check for two hundred
- 3:07and twenty dollars. Oh, Greg was not happy. What a kick in
- 3:14the shorts, right, Yes, it was funny because actually by that time
- 3:16I had I had already started my career in roofing and gutters and I was
- 3:22actually a salesman at the time in the Twin Cities for an amazing company called
- 3:24Lindis Construction. And I sold my parents a roof. And you won't believe
- 3:29this. I even took my commission out of it. Oh, you are
- 3:32a great son, you are. I know, I'm telling you. I
- 3:37figured I was good for Christmas and birthdays that but they failed. Nowadays they're
- 3:42made much better, much much much better. And you know one of the
- 3:45reasons that fourteen years ago now I decided to pair and partner with GAF is
- 3:52because of the warranties and the backings that they put on their shingles. I
- 3:55mean, once we put some really hard work in. I mean for two
- 4:00years, we put a lot of hard work in putting roofs up, and
- 4:02we actually had representatives from gaf inspect every single roof that we did, making
- 4:09sure that they were done to the standards that they set forth. In order
- 4:13for us to become a master Elite roofer. Once we got that Master Elite
- 4:16status, we're then able to put a Golden Pledge warranty on our roofs.
- 4:20So when we put an asphalt roof on somebody's home, it has a fifty
- 4:25year non pro rated warranty. The non pro rated part is the biggest part
- 4:30of it. That means if you pay twenty thousand dollars today for a new
- 4:34roof and in twenty years those shingles fail, but now the cost to replace
- 4:40that roof is forty thousand dollars and the way things are going they will be
- 4:45it's covered one hundred percent. So that's what I loved about that, and
- 4:48that's what I paired with him. And we've actually had a couple warranty claims
- 4:51in the past fourteen years and it was literally like send us a picture,
- 4:56yep, replace it, and they we got paid to replace that roof.
- 5:00That's the type of partner that I like, and that's why we paired with
- 5:02GAF. Now there's lots of different types of shingles out there nowadays, Sean.
- 5:08We've got synthetic material shingles that are made out of plastic nice and then
- 5:13the other big pushes steel, and there's all kinds of different steel products.
- 5:16There's steel looking shingles, there's slate looking steel, there's steel shingles that have
- 5:23granules on them to look more like asphalt. And I guess really the thought
- 5:29behind it is that steel is going to last a lot longer, and I
- 5:31would agree with that, But not everything is the same. So when you
- 5:36look at a standing seam where you've got the ribs that stand up and down,
- 5:41it's more like a type of steel you'd see like on a pole barn.
- 5:46There's not a lot that can go wrong with that roof. And when
- 5:48I say not, like, I don't know if anything can go like that.
- 5:53It's really interesting. I would've since I look at roofs. Yes,
- 5:59if you were to take a drive through bear a Boot, I'd love to
- 6:01look up the company that did this. But if you drive through bear a
- 6:04Boot, almost every single house on the main strip, the old houses,
- 6:11the old beautiful Victorians, they all have steel roofs on them. And those
- 6:15steel roofs are original to those homes, and those homes are all one hundred
- 6:17years old, So this stuff can last. A lot of some of them
- 6:20have been recoated or repainted but most of those roofs are original, so that
- 6:25stuff can last a long long time and it doesn't require any sort of waterproof
- 6:32membrane. They are water tight, which is one of the biggest problems I
- 6:36have with a lot of the steel shingles. They look beautiful, they last
- 6:40a long time, but they are not water tight. They do not seal
- 6:43down to the roof. They require a lot of them require a thick rubber
- 6:48underlayment to stop leakage. I've dealt with them. We've dealt with some leaks.
- 6:54I'm sure most of them are great. Biggest problem with steel roofs for
- 6:59me nowadays is the way insurance companies are going show. They are really tightening
- 7:03up. Some of the biggest insurance companies in the world. You look at
- 7:08your state farm, your am FAM. Some of those big ones are reporting
- 7:11billion dollar losses for the second year in a row, and a lot of
- 7:15that has to do with storm restoration, hail, tornadoes, and wind.
- 7:21Now what they're starting to do on steel roofs is say, hey, that's
- 7:25cosmetic. That is not and you people have got to look at their insurance
- 7:30policies. We just dealt with one the other day where it had not they
- 7:33depreciate your roof. When your roof is on your home, they depreciate it.
- 7:36So I think the typical life of a roof. Don't quote me on
- 7:41this. There's probably people going that's not true. But what I see is
- 7:44about twenty years. So they're going to depreciate your roof. If they go
- 7:46up there and they say, okay, your roof is ten years old,
- 7:49we're going to appreciate it ten years. The actual cash value or the actual
- 7:53replacement value of your roof is twenty thousand, we're going to give you ten
- 7:56thousand. Typically, not a problem, because a lot of policies have what's
- 8:00called recoverable depreciation, meaning if they depreciate the roof to ten thousand dollars,
- 8:05they give you a check for ten thousand dollars. Then once you get the
- 8:07work done they will give you they will give you the other ten thousand dollars.
- 8:15Perfect, no problem. A lot of policies are becoming that they do
- 8:20not cover that recoverable depreciation. We just ran into this the other day with
- 8:24somebody who had a roof, they'd appreciated it, and lo and behold,
- 8:30they did not have recoverable depreciation. Interesting so they were kind of stuck with
- 8:33it, can I And I've got to ask you to and you mentioned driving
- 8:37through Barboo and I've noticed that as well. Some of those roofs. By
- 8:41the way, the house is falling down, but the roofs, the roof
- 8:45is still there. It's just it's true interest something. And you mentioned kind
- 8:48of how that stuff can get beat up. So with that and one of
- 8:52the other things I hear oftentimes at about from folks with is we talk about
- 8:56some of the different types of roofing materials with Andrew Larson from Larsen Home Services
- 9:01is the noise is I hear people one of the one of the things people
- 9:05often often comment about is if they've got a like a standing seam roof,
- 9:09things like that. They say it's loud if it rains or anything like that.
- 9:13You hear every little thing that hits your roof, you can this is
- 9:18very very true. I see I have some standing seals, some standing seat
- 9:24steel roofing on my house, some standing seam and for me on a residential
- 9:28home, for the most part, I think standing This is just my opinion.
- 9:35It looks great with accent. So I've got some accent dormers that have
- 9:39got some steel on it. I think it looks phenomenal, and then I
- 9:41think it's you need the right application. Sometimes I don't. It can look
- 9:46out of place on certain homes. But sometimes nowadays they're designing I can give
- 9:50you a very modern look as well with a great roof. So again there's
- 9:54applications and times and places for everything. When it comes to a synthetic shingle,
- 10:01I know I've talked about Fwave on here before, and what really attracted
- 10:03me to f wave was that it's completely synthetic. It's made out of plastic.
- 10:07Now, admittedly, the warranty that goes along with the product like this
- 10:11actually is not as good as a warranty that goes along with a GAF shingle.
- 10:16It's not even close. I have inklings of why. I mean,
- 10:22f Wave hasn't been around as long as GAF has. GAF has been around
- 10:24since then eighteen hundreds. They're old company, they're well established, and they're
- 10:30big. They have lots of money, So for them to back their products
- 10:33up and cover warranty issues isn't a big deal for a smaller company, it
- 10:39is a bigger deal. I don't really know what can go wrong with the
- 10:41F Wave shingle. There's no fiberglass matting to go bad, there's no granule,
- 10:46there's no granules to lose on it. And they give you a five
- 10:50year hail warranty, meaning if it is damaged within five years from hail,
- 10:54you don't even have to go through your insurance company. They replace it at
- 10:56no charge, which is something I've never heard of before. It seals down
- 11:01like a regular shingle, it installs like a regular shingle, it cuts like
- 11:05a regular shingle. It's actually lighter than a regular shingle. So there's some
- 11:09really great options out there when we talk about from asphalt shingles to steal to
- 11:16synthetic like the F Wave. There's actually another brand called Da Vinci. They've
- 11:20been around for a long time. I'm I've never worked with the Da Vinci
- 11:24shingle, but I know it's made a lot in the same manner as the
- 11:28F Wave, so I'm sure it's a great product as well. So from
- 11:31plastic to asphalt to steel, that's kind of what we see. There's wood
- 11:35shake shingles. I mean, one hundred years ago, that's what pretty much
- 11:39went on every home you know, it's getting it's getting later into the two
- 11:43thousands, maybe I should say one hundred and thirty years ago, every home
- 11:46had cedar shaped roofs on it. But we know that wood when it gets
- 11:50wet and dry, and wet and dry, it rots. So those weren't
- 11:52the best applications. But people still do use them nowadays, but they're starting
- 11:56to switch over to synthetic products that look the same because the's and and what's
- 12:01amazing and having getting kind to know you over the years obviously has mentioned you
- 12:07guys, did our roof a number of years ago, still looks brand new,
- 12:11looks fantastic, It's just beautiful. The cool thing is keeping up on
- 12:15all these different things. And I know when you know, decade or so
- 12:18ago, when you and I first started talking f way, for example,
- 12:20synthetic this hadn't been on the market yet, hadn't been all that common.
- 12:24You researched, and I remember the first show he did when you had first
- 12:28started talking about these synthetic shingles. He said, these things are absolutely amazing.
- 12:33And that's one of the cool things too. As we talk with Andrew
- 12:37each and every week and get this education, the great Opportunity Wiba at Larsen
- 12:41HomeServices dot com. If you've got a question to ask Andrew. He's got
- 12:45a ton of knowledge on this stuff and is always not only what's currently happening,
- 12:48but also things coming up on the horizon as well, new developments,
- 12:52new techniques, new products out there as well. Andrew keeps on top of
- 12:56that stuff. If you ever have a question, you can always email Andrew
- 13:00Wiva at Larsenhomeservices dot com and we'd love to answer it right on the show.
- 13:03But one of the things I've really enjoyed is getting the education over the
- 13:07years, and I think for a lot of homeowners that's a really cool thing
- 13:09too. Is whether it's Doctor Energy Saver, whether it's GAF Master Elite,
- 13:15and getting getting your roof done with that golden pledge, warranty, gutters gutters
- 13:20shutter and having that stuff done is not only are you getting a fantastic product,
- 13:24great installation, all that great stuff, you're also understanding why it's better.
- 13:28It's not just trust us as better. We'll show you why it's better,
- 13:31and we'll give a warranty to back that stuff up, which is an
- 13:33amazing thing. When you work with Larsen Home Services and Andrew and the team.
- 13:37All I got to do this morning pickup phone gam McCall six eight five
- 13:39three five forty three forty three. That's five three five four three four three
- 13:43for Larsen Home Services, the website Larsenhome Services dot com. That's l A
- 13:48R. S O N Home Services dot Com. And Andrew v talk slate
- 13:52in one of these weeks too, because I'm always curious about slate roofs as
- 13:56well. I see them on TV and I think that's an interesting Yes,
- 14:00slate roofs and slate roofs last a long time. Here's the problem with slate,
- 14:03Sean. It takes an actual artist to install that stuff. Yeah,
- 14:07I mean it is. It is an art. It is extremely difficult.
- 14:11And we have an an F wave product called True Slate. And I will
- 14:16bet money to someone if from a distance, I mean like from a street
- 14:20distance, they can tell the difference between true Slate and F Wave are real
- 14:24slate and true F Wave slate. It looks phenomenal, Sean. I don't
- 14:28the WIBA at Larsen Home Services dot com. Uh email us so we can
- 14:35answer more questions like this. But yes, the True slate product it is.
- 14:37It is phenomenal, but real real slate is difficult. It requires extra
- 14:43trust support because it's super heavy and cutting them and putting on. I'm telling
- 14:48you it is artwork. There's not a lot of people that do it anymore.
- 14:50It's pretty amazing. As you mentioned too, the synthetic, the f
- 14:52wave and the true slate as well. If you love that look and you
- 14:56want that look and on the right house, it is a bood a look.
- 15:00And as Andrew mentioned, different types of roofing materials for different types of
- 15:03applications. It's a really good day to pick up phone gamme call six so
- 15:07eight five three five forty three forty three. That's five three five forty three
- 15:11forty three. Andrew, It's always great chatting with you, my friend.
