- 0:00Speaker 1: I'm Brian Reid. I have a new show where I'm
- 0:02Speaker 1: reexamining journalism. It's called Question Everything, and I really am
- 0:07Speaker 1: questioning everything, including my own work. In the first episode,
- 0:11Speaker 1: I sit down with a fellow journalist who called my
- 0:13Speaker 1: most well-known story, S-Town, morally indefensible.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Why do you think this is a story at all?
- 0:20Speaker 2: What's your answer to that criticism of mine and others,
- 0:23Speaker 2: even questioning whether or not it's legitimate to do this?
- 0:28Speaker 3: Um.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Question Everything is my real-time quest to try and make
- 0:32Speaker 1: journalism better. It's a show for anyone who's felt frustrated
- 0:35Speaker 1: or misled by the news at a time when so
- 0:37Speaker 1: many people believe that journalism and journalists are failing.
- 0:41Speaker 4: I view myself as covering this as this is something
- 0:46Speaker 4: that is happening.
- 0:47Speaker 2: This being.
- 0:48Speaker 1: This being.
- 0:49Speaker 4: people believing so much bullshit.
- 0:51Speaker 5: I do feel like that as a reporter, that like
- 0:54Speaker 5: it is an exercise in failure.
- 0:56Speaker 4: A jailer made the remark, well, I guess you'll quit
- 0:58Speaker 4: writing about the DA now. I said, dude, I'm already
- 1:01Speaker 4: writing this story that's happening right now. I'm already writing
- 1:03Speaker 4: that in my head as we sit here.
- 1:05Speaker 1: I think I have to be more aware to tell
- 1:07Speaker 1: you about the process because that blowback can be.
- 1:09Speaker 3: More intense these days.
- 1:10Speaker 1: But standing in front of that blowback or writing in
- 1:12Speaker 1: a way to make it not happen, I'm not sure
- 1:15Speaker 1: that's my role. MSNBC.
- 1:17Speaker 2: CNN.
- 1:18Speaker 3: CNN is another one.
- 1:19Speaker 5: It doesn't matter what they're saying.
- 1:22Speaker 2: He just automatically dismisses.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Well, they develop their own reputation. Okay. I could deliberately
- 1:27Speaker 3: try to influence events, and that is not quite kosher
- 1:33Speaker 3: for a journalist.
- 1:34Speaker 2: She's like, what do I possibly get out of that?
- 1:36Speaker 2: I really had to think about, like, what does she
- 1:38Speaker 2: get out of this to tell this story on the radio?
- 1:40Speaker 2: And the only thing I came up with was, like,
- 1:42Speaker 2: when people hear a story... that they can connect to,
- 1:46Speaker 2: it gives you a feeling. This is so corny.
- 1:50Speaker 5: I didn't understand, well, how is that journalism? I think
- 1:54Speaker 5: that if journalism is about truth, we need to understand
- 1:58Speaker 5: some of the whys.
- 1:59Speaker 1: And from your perspective as a listener, that wasn't clear?
- 2:03Speaker 2: No.
- 2:04Speaker 1: That to me is a failure on our part. I
- 2:07Speaker 1: definitely think they should be placed in jail. You think
- 2:10Speaker 1: the reporter should still be in jail?
- 2:11Speaker 2: Yes, I do.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Wow, okay. And you're saying this to me, a journalist.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I guess. Question everything. Every other Thursday. Drop September 12th.
