- 0:00A human birth is considered to be an important and valuable
- 0:05step in the growth of the soul and in the evolutionary
- 0:10development of consciousness in furtherance of the divine
- 0:14manifestation. It is not to be wasted.
- 0:19The traditions of India indicate that even the gods, who are
- 0:23static beings, would have to take birth in the body in order
- 0:27to evolve, change, transform and develop.
- 0:33Considered in this light, it becomes clear that abuse or
- 0:37weakening of the physical frame is counterproductive and not
- 0:42indicated as a path forward, particularly for those who take
- 0:47up the integral Yoga, which aims to transform life, not abandon
- 0:53it. There is a considerable ascetic
- 0:57tendency leading toward renunciation of the body, based
- 1:00on long historical precedent in spiritual traditions throughout
- 1:05the world. This tendency developed due to
- 1:08the difficulty of overcoming the forces of vital desire in all
- 1:12its forms and manifestations and reactions, including greed,
- 1:18jealousy, envy, anger, lust, cravings and passions that drive
- 1:24the being out of balance. Sri Aurobindo proposes to
- 1:29transform, not eliminate the vital being and thus when it
- 1:35comes to dealing with the physical body, he recommends A
- 1:39balanced approach without craving, desire or avoidance.
- 1:43The body should be maintained, kept functional and in balance,
- 1:48even developed to reach its higher potentials, without the
- 1:53seeker falling into the other side of the issue by becoming
- 1:56attached and thereby grasping for physical results.
- 2:01To do this, the seeker must overcome the limitations of both
- 2:06the materialist fixture on the external world and its
- 2:10manifestation, as well as the limitations of the refusal of
- 2:15the ascetic to participate fully in the divine manifestation by
- 2:19seeking an escape from it. Shiobindo writes quote.
- 2:25It is a mistake to neglect the body and let it waste away.
- 2:29The body is the means of the sadhna and should be maintained
- 2:32in good order. There should be no attachment to
- 2:35it, but no contempt or neglect either of the material part of
- 2:40our nature. In this yoga the aim is not only
- 2:44the union with the higher consciousness, but the
- 2:47transformation by its power of the lower, including the
- 2:52physical nature. It is not necessary to have
- 2:56desire or greed of food in order to eat.
- 2:59The Yogi eats not out of desire but to maintain the body.
