- 0:47Speaker 1: Welcome to today's edition of Reflection on the Word with
- 0:50Speaker 1: Richard K. I'm Chuck Christie, and today we are asking
- 0:54Speaker 1: you to spend a few moments of your time with
- 0:56Speaker 1: us each day as Richard shares from God's work with notes, quotes,
- 0:59Speaker 1: and story along with some of his own personal experiences,
- 1:02Speaker 1: to confirm for you God's great love for us, that
- 1:05Speaker 1: his compassion for us never fails, and that He has
- 1:08Speaker 1: a great faithfulness toward us in every regard. Now, if
- 1:11Speaker 1: you miss a portion of today's broadcast or would like
- 1:13Speaker 1: to recommend it to a friend, you can hear this
- 1:16Speaker 1: program anytime online at Talknetwork Radio dot com. Well, now
- 1:21Speaker 1: here's Richard with today's reflection.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Take careful attention than to how you walk, not as
- 1:29Speaker 2: unwise people, but as wise making the most of the
- 1:34Speaker 2: time because the days are evil. So don't be foolish,
- 1:38Speaker 2: but understand what the Lord's will is. And don't get
- 1:42Speaker 2: drunk with wine which leads to reckless actions, but be
- 1:47Speaker 2: filled with the spirit. And that is from Ephesians, chapter
- 1:54Speaker 2: five and verses fifteen through eighteen. Why is it that
- 2:00Speaker 2: in Paul's letter to the Church of Ephesus did he
- 2:06Speaker 2: state that they should not be drunk with wine, and
- 2:12Speaker 2: some versions say wherein is excess, but be filled with
- 2:18Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit. Do you know? It is an amazing thing.
- 2:25Speaker 2: How scripture confirms scripture. If we go back and look
- 2:31Speaker 2: at the account of the Day of Pentecost, we find
- 2:37Speaker 2: some very significant things. And I want to just take
- 2:42Speaker 2: a moment and read from the second chapter of the
- 2:46Speaker 2: Book of Acts in reference to the day of Pentecost,
- 2:51Speaker 2: and it says that when the day of Pentecost had arrived,
- 2:55Speaker 2: they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound
- 3:01Speaker 2: like that of a violent, rushing wind came from heaven,
- 3:06Speaker 2: and it filled the whole house where they were staying,
- 3:10Speaker 2: and tongues like flames of fire that were divided, appeared
- 3:16Speaker 2: to them and rested on each one of them. Then
- 3:21Speaker 2: they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began
- 3:27Speaker 2: to speak in different languages as the spirit gave them
- 3:32Speaker 2: ability for speech. The scripture continues that there were Jews
- 3:38Speaker 2: living in Jerusalem, about men from every nation under heaven.
- 3:44Speaker 2: When this sound occurred, the multitude came together and was
- 3:50Speaker 2: confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
- 3:58Speaker 2: And they were astounded, and a maid saying, look, aren't
- 4:03Speaker 2: all these who are speaking Galileans. How is it that
- 4:08Speaker 2: we hear each of us in our own native language
- 4:13Speaker 2: Parthians means Elamites, those who live in Mesopotamia, in Judea
- 4:19Speaker 2: and Capitosia, Ponchas and Asia, Fergia and Panphilia, Egypt and
- 4:25Speaker 2: the parts of Libya near Sareni, visitors from Rome, both
- 4:30Speaker 2: Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs. We hear them speaking
- 4:38Speaker 2: in our own languages the magnificent acts of God. And
- 4:44Speaker 2: they were all astounded and perplected, saying to one another,
- 4:49Speaker 2: what could this be? But some sneered and said, they're
- 4:56Speaker 2: full of new wine. Interesting part in this account is
- 5:04Speaker 2: that these believers who were baptized in the Holy Spirit
- 5:13Speaker 2: began speaking, praising God, speaking manifest glory of God openly
- 5:22Speaker 2: to all of those that were in attendance for the
- 5:28Speaker 2: Feast of Pentecost. When they were there, and they heard this,
- 5:36Speaker 2: some regarded it as a natural means of being drunk. Now,
- 5:44Speaker 2: I want you to see the similarity in what was
- 5:48Speaker 2: actually said when Paul makes the statement in Ephesians where
- 5:56Speaker 2: he actually is admonishing believers that they should not be
- 6:05Speaker 2: drunk with wine, which will lead to reckless actions, but
- 6:11Speaker 2: be filled with the spirit. Now here is the interesting point.
- 6:18Speaker 2: In the earlier account in the Book of Acts, there
- 6:22Speaker 2: were some who thought that these who were speaking were drunk.
- 6:29Speaker 2: In other words, they appeared to be out of control
- 6:35Speaker 2: of their own actions, which would seem to be an
- 6:41Speaker 2: accurate description. And so there is a similarity. And I
- 6:47Speaker 2: offered this as a question as well as an encouragement,
- 6:53Speaker 2: and that is what is it like to be intoxicated
- 7:00Speaker 2: with the Holy Spirit? Now, don't misunderstand me. I'm not
- 7:06Speaker 2: talking about drumming up some kind of action by force,
- 7:14Speaker 2: or some means of being able to push an individual
- 7:20Speaker 2: into a loss of control. No, what I am talking
- 7:26Speaker 2: about is the hunger of a Christian believer to have
- 7:32Speaker 2: the full experience of God's flowing power operating in their life.
- 7:40Speaker 2: That is the same thing as looking at a natural
- 7:46Speaker 2: person who is actually intoxicated, Because what is it that
- 7:54Speaker 2: an intoxicated person will represent a lack of control? Their
- 8:01Speaker 2: actions will not even be healthy. They'll do things that
- 8:05Speaker 2: will be damaging to themselves and to others. We know
- 8:10Speaker 2: that even today you see people who become inebriated, or
- 8:18Speaker 2: if you will, drunk, and then they get in an
- 8:21Speaker 2: automobile and they think that they can drive, and they
- 8:27Speaker 2: don't realize that the alcohol that they have consumed has
- 8:33Speaker 2: really taken control of them. And so what is taking
- 8:39Speaker 2: place is they are in a point where they don't
- 8:45Speaker 2: realize that they don't have control. They are drunk intoxicated,
- 8:53Speaker 2: but they're intoxicated with wine or alcohol of whatever form.
- 8:59Speaker 2: And we know this is true because on a very
- 9:04Speaker 2: practical level, people that are arrested driving under the influence,
- 9:11Speaker 2: in some cases, arresting them maybe the best thing that
- 9:15Speaker 2: could happen, only because it perhaps saved them from hermit
- 9:23Speaker 2: themselves are hurting others. And so what we want to
- 9:27Speaker 2: look at is the similarity those that were hearing the
- 9:32Speaker 2: gospel that was being proclaimed, the messages and praise of
- 9:38Speaker 2: God in their own languages, appeared to be drunk, or
- 9:44Speaker 2: they wouldn't have said to them, you look like you're drunk.
- 9:49Speaker 2: And in this account, it's an interesting thing because there
- 9:54Speaker 2: was a response, and the response came from the apostle.
- 10:00Speaker 2: So Peter and Peter said to them, you are not
- 10:06Speaker 2: understanding what has taken place. What you're looking at is
- 10:13Speaker 2: these are people who, like you, have been empowered by
- 10:21Speaker 2: the Holy Spirit, and it says they are not drunk
- 10:26Speaker 2: as you suppose, since it's only nine in the morning.
- 10:31Speaker 2: On the contrary, this is what was spoken through the
- 10:36Speaker 2: prophet Joel, and he proclaims that it'll be in the
- 10:41Speaker 2: last days, says God, that I will pour out my
- 10:45Speaker 2: spirit on all humanity, and your sons and your daughters
- 10:49Speaker 2: will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your
- 10:53Speaker 2: old men will dream dreams. I will even pour out
- 10:56Speaker 2: my spirit on my male and female slaves in those days,
- 11:02Speaker 2: and they will prophesy. I will display wonders in the
- 11:07Speaker 2: heaven above and signs on the earth below. And then
- 11:11Speaker 2: he goes on to describe some of the signs that
- 11:15Speaker 2: are going to be taking place as we near the
- 11:19Speaker 2: return of the Lord Jesus. But it is very important
- 11:25Speaker 2: for us to see. That is a reason why many
- 11:30Speaker 2: people who are educated, perhaps intellectual, don't want to see
- 11:37Speaker 2: themselves in a lack of control. Now, these same people
- 11:44Speaker 2: will drink until they get tipsy, or they will drink
- 11:49Speaker 2: until they are drunk, and they in turn will probably
- 11:54Speaker 2: have someone drive them back to their home or where
- 12:00Speaker 2: wherever it is that they need to go. But in
- 12:02Speaker 2: some cases without even taking into account their condition, They'll
- 12:08Speaker 2: get into an automobile and they will drive off, thinking
- 12:13Speaker 2: that they are in full control of all of their
- 12:17Speaker 2: own capacity, not realizing that they have given up that
- 12:23Speaker 2: control to the intoxicating alcohol. Wouldn't it be something if
- 12:30Speaker 2: our lives were so intoxicated with the Holy Spirit, Not
- 12:37Speaker 2: that we would be drunk in the sense that we
- 12:41Speaker 2: are being controlled by something that will harm us our others,
- 12:48Speaker 2: but that we are being controlled and used by Almighty
- 12:54Speaker 2: God himself. We know that they're is a similarity, and
- 13:03Speaker 2: for some they don't want that to be their experience.
- 13:10Speaker 2: It is not a place where some of us want
- 13:16Speaker 2: to go. But if you ask an individual believer, have
- 13:22Speaker 2: you received the manifest power of the Holy Spirit functioning
- 13:30Speaker 2: in your life to set others free? If not, wouldn't
- 13:36Speaker 2: you rather be totally intoxicated with the Holy Spirit? Wouldn't
- 13:42Speaker 2: you rather be as drunk in people's view that the
- 13:49Speaker 2: Holy Spirit has such control of you and I that
- 13:55Speaker 2: we actually look like we're totally out of control. But
- 14:02Speaker 2: yet what we will do in that action will bring
- 14:09Speaker 2: glory to God. It will not bring harm to others.
- 14:15Speaker 2: This is something we need to look at as believers.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Richard will be right back in a moment to wrap up.
- 14:24Speaker 1: But if you've just joined us, you've been listening to

- 15:05Speaker 1: to wrap up the day's message.
- 15:09Speaker 2: And remember it is not just enough to have the
- 15:16Speaker 2: experience one time, no matter what anybody may say. To
- 15:21Speaker 2: be full of the spirit means that we must have
- 15:26Speaker 2: many refeelings. It is a constant flowing if you will,
- 15:33Speaker 2: leaking out of us. There's a scripture that describes how
- 15:41Speaker 2: we are actually used of God when we are filled
- 15:49Speaker 2: with the Holy Spirit, and that is that we actually
- 15:55Speaker 2: are viewed as leaking vessels, that we are in our
- 16:02Speaker 2: body submitted so much to the Holy Spirit that he
- 16:09Speaker 2: overflows from us, as we said earlier, to others. And
- 16:16Speaker 2: that same power that appears to be intoxication transfers to
- 16:24Speaker 2: the deliverance, healing, and the freedom of others who can
- 16:30Speaker 2: receive Jesus as Lord and Savior and then receive his
- 16:39Speaker 2: life changing power in the Holy Spirit. Has that been
- 16:47Speaker 2: your experience as a believer? Are you willing to be
- 16:53Speaker 2: in the other's view intoxicated with the Spirit with his power.
- 17:03Speaker 2: I pray that we are seeking that the Holy Spirit
- 17:10Speaker 2: fill us continually in our lives. And that is today's
- 17:17Speaker 2: reflection on the Work.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Thank you, Richard. Join us again tomorrow when we continue
- 17:23Speaker 1: with the next edition of Reflections on the Work with
