- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Ho ho ho. Merry Christmas Eve, if you are
- 0:18listening to this on the day that it comes out, we are in
- 0:23Psalm 119 today. And you might say, Brian, why,
- 0:25why don't you do a special Christmas Eve episode?
- 0:28Well, I got to tell you, I really, I'm excited about this
- 0:33portion of Psalm 119. We're going through verses 97
- 0:36through one O 497 through one O 4.
- 0:39And we're looking at the verses that start with the Hebrew
- 0:43letter mem mem. And this portion of Scripture
- 0:48actually really tells us a lot about Jesus.
- 0:52As I've mentioned before, all of Scripture points to Jesus.
- 0:56You can turn to any page in Scripture and it will tell you
- 1:00something about who Jesus is, what he accomplished, what he
- 1:03did on the cross. And so wherever we go in the
- 1:06Word of God, we are learning about Jesus and that is
- 1:10especially true in today's episode.
- 1:12So I'm I'm reading through the mem verses verses 97 through one
- 1:17O 4 with a special eye towards what we see about Jesus from
- 1:23this portion of Scripture. Of course, Psalm 118 is all
- 1:25about the word of God. And we are told in John one in
- 1:28the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the
- 1:31word was God. The same was in the beginning
- 1:35with God. All things were made through him
- 1:37and without him there was not anything made that was made in
- 1:40was life, and that life was the light of men.
- 1:44Jesus is the ultimate word of God.
- 1:47He is the everlasting. He is the eternal word of God.
- 1:51Though scripture did not exist from all eternity past, other
- 1:55than of course in the mind and heart of God, Jesus has existed
- 2:00for all of eternity and there was never a time when Jesus did
- 2:06not exist. Of course He was born.
- 2:09He took on himself, the flesh, the the humanity that we have
- 2:152000 years ago within the womb of Mary placed there by the Holy
- 2:20Spirit of God at the command of God the Father so that He could
- 2:24purchase our redemption right you, you guys, you got me off
- 2:29track and I am excited. I am I am pumped for this.
- 2:33Let's read in verse 97 through one O 4 how I love your
- 2:37instruction. It is my meditation all day
- 2:41long. Your command makes me wiser than
- 2:44my enemies for it is always with me.
- 2:48I have more insight than all my teachers because your decrees
- 2:52are my meditation. I understand more than the
- 2:55elders because I obey your precepts.
- 2:58One O 1. I have kept my feet from every
- 3:02evil path to follow your word. I've not turned from your
- 3:06judgments, for you yourself have instructed me how sweet your
- 3:11word is to my taste, sweeter than honey in my mouth.
- 3:14I gain understanding from your precepts.
- 3:17Therefore, I hate every false way.
- 3:22As I read through, especially this portion, I can see, I can
- 3:26imagine Jesus himself like saying this in prayer to God the
- 3:32father #1 how cool is it that Jesus prayed?
- 3:36We're going to be going in 2026 through John 11 through John 21.
- 3:42So I've taken John one through 4, John five through 10, the 1st
- 3:48sermon series there. John one through 4 was in 2024.
- 3:51John five through 10. We looked at in 2025, the the
- 3:55first seven months of of 2026, we're going to be finishing out
- 4:02the book of John. And there's one entire chapter
- 4:06in John's Gospel that he devotes to Jesus's high priestly prayer
- 4:09to the Father. And if Jesus prayed to God, then
- 4:12how much more do we need to be praying to our heavenly Father?
- 4:16So I'm going to read through this and I'm going to to think
- 4:19about Jesus praying this to the Father because I think there's
- 4:23no one for whom this was more true than for Jesus Christ as he
- 4:27walked this earth as one of us, as a Jewish man.
- 4:31They're living in 1st century Palestine.
- 4:34And what a amazing thought that God himself lived our life.
- 4:41So verse 97, how I love your instruction.
- 4:43It is my meditation all day long.
- 4:47Jesus thought about the word of God and we are told over and
- 4:52over again throughout the Gospel accounts that when Jesus spoke,
- 4:56he spoke with authority based on the word of God.
- 4:58He said, haven't you read this in the word?
- 5:03He would point back to the the stories of scripture.
- 5:06He would point back to Adam and Eve as it related to marriage.
- 5:09He would point back to Noah as it related to future judgment.
- 5:15He would point to the prophet Jonah even when it came to his
- 5:19own death and burial and resurrection.
- 5:23He would point to the Psalms when it came to how we should
- 5:27behave in the House of God. Jesus was saturated with
- 5:31Scripture. It was what he thought about all
- 5:34day long. We're even told in the Sermon on
- 5:38the Mount that not a single jot or title that is not not a
- 5:43dotted I or a crossed T would would pass away from the Word,
- 5:49from the Law, before everything had been fulfilled.
- 5:53And certainly Jesus was that fulfillment of everything that
- 5:57the Word of God spoke about. Verse #98 He says Your command
- 6:02makes me wiser than my enemies, for it is always with me.
- 6:06There was never a time when Jesus was not operating in
- 6:09obedience to Scripture. He was always following what God
- 6:14had said. And we can certainly think Jesus
- 6:16was wiser than his enemies. He was wiser than the Pharisees
- 6:20and the Sadducees and the scribes and the lawyers.
- 6:23He was wiser than Herod and Pontius Pilate.
- 6:26He was wiser even than the the Zealots.
- 6:30He was wiser than the Essings, which was a, a community there
- 6:34that was kind of a, I'll I'll say fundamentalist, as in they,
- 6:38they literally withdrew from Jewish society because they said
- 6:42we've got the right way. All the rest of the Jews are
- 6:45living wrong. And so we're going to live off.
- 6:48You might have heard of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the caves of
- 6:51Qumran. They lived in that area and
- 6:54that's where that group was from.
- 6:55Jesus was wiser than everyone else and it's why he gave his
- 7:00life for us, because he knew what they did not know.
- 7:03He knew that he was the Lamb of God who would take away the sin
- 7:06of the world. And so when he was sacrificed,
- 7:08when he was put to death, delivered from the Jewish people
- 7:12and from the Sanhedrin, the the rulers of Israel to the Roman
- 7:18rulers, that they would kill him.
- 7:20Jesus would be the sacrifice that would bring us
- 7:23reconciliation to God, that as He bore all of our sin and our
- 7:29evil and our hatred and every wicked thing that we would ever
- 7:32do on himself, that He could pay the price and that we would be
- 7:38redeemed as a result of it. I'm thankful that we have Jesus,
- 7:42who as he listened to the Word of God, He was smarter than
- 7:44those that opposed him. For you and your life, you might
- 7:48have some enemies. Are you dealing with your
- 7:51enemies through the word of God? Are you looking to God's word to
- 7:55govern how you interact with them?
- 7:57Notice Jesus never went into the temple and started throwing
- 8:01punches at people. Even the famous story of him
- 8:04driving the temple merchants out of the temple, that whip is used
- 8:09that he creates for driving out the animals that they were
- 8:13charging exorbitant interest prices for and thus defrauding
- 8:19people who came to worship God in the House of the Lord.
- 8:23And as he says there, don't you know that my house is to be
- 8:26called a House of prayer? Verse 99, he says I have more
- 8:30insight than all my teachers because your decrees are my
- 8:33meditation. I think of the story of Jesus
- 8:36when he was 12 and he was at the temple, the family that he had,
- 8:41Mary and Joseph and all the rest of the extended family, they
- 8:44were in Jerusalem for I think it was a Passover.
- 8:48It could have been one of the other two feasts that they would
- 8:53have. That would be traveling feasts.
- 8:55You'd actually go to the temple to celebrate that particular
- 8:59feast. So they are there, they leave,
- 9:02they don't recognize Jesus is still at the temple in
- 9:05Jerusalem. And so it's three days before
- 9:07they discovered that Jesus isn't with him.
- 9:09They go back and Jesus is there and he is teaching.
- 9:13He's teaching the leaders there in the temple itself, these
- 9:18people whose entire job was to know the word of God and all of
- 9:23the laws on laws and laws that that generations of Jewish
- 9:28teachers had added on to the word of God and all of the
- 9:31various discussions and and ways and viewpoints that they had on
- 9:35it. And Jesus was teaching them.
- 9:39And here he says, I have more insight than all my teachers.
- 9:43My biggest prayer and goal would be not that you need Tabernacle
- 9:47talk in order to understand God's word.
- 9:51I want you to far surpass me. I want you to have more insight
- 9:55than me because you think about you meditate on the word of God.
- 10:01I want to be able to hear from you, whether it's in the
- 10:03comments, whether it's a message, whether it's, you know,
- 10:07talking at church or in a small group or something.
- 10:10I would love to hear you go, Oh, this made me think of this.
- 10:14I actually had my friend Matt Melton the other day.
- 10:18It was one of the sections in Psalm 119, and there was
- 10:21something mentioned about raising hands in in Praise to
- 10:24God. And he in the comments mentioned
- 10:27First Timothy 28, which I had forgotten about in that
- 10:29particular moment. I hadn't been thinking about it
- 10:31where Paul says I will therefore that men pray everywhere,
- 10:35lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting.
- 10:38And I was thankful. I was like, oh man, yeah, I love
- 10:40that verse. But because Matt's been thinking
- 10:42about the word of God, then when something's mentioned about
- 10:45raising our hands to the Lord, he's going, Oh yeah, praise.
- 10:48Certainly. That's one way that we can lift
- 10:50our hands, but we lift our hands in prayer.
- 10:53And so I, I want you to have more insight than me because you
- 10:56are spending time thinking about the word of God.
- 10:59Verse 100. I understand more than the
- 11:01elders because I obey your precepts here.
- 11:05This is not if if you're in a church that has elders.
- 11:10This is not necessarily talking about your spiritual leaders,
- 11:13though. Our hope would be that you would
- 11:16know more of the Word of God than we do.
- 11:19That's that's a wonderful scenario.
- 11:21I would much rather have too many people know the Word of God
- 11:26and even know it better than we do rather than if the elders at
- 11:32a church are the pinnacle of Bible knowledge.
- 11:35Well then the people will only grow to as as deep of a love or
- 11:40knowledge of the word of God as we have.
- 11:42May we always be pursuing more of the truth of Scripture here.
- 11:46Sorry, that's a a rabbit trail because the word is the same
- 11:49here. Elders, elders here would be
- 11:51talking about the leaders in Israel like the political
- 11:54leaders. And he says I have a better
- 11:56understanding, if you will, about politics because I obey
- 12:01your precepts. I understand more of what our
- 12:04country or our nation needs because I'm paying attention to
- 12:08the word of God. The problem today is that people
- 12:11get there. Sometimes they even get their
- 12:14theology from politics, but they are getting their political
- 12:17views from whatever, you know, the GOP or whatever, the
- 12:22Democrats or whatever, the libertarians or whoever else.
- 12:25They, they look at that and they say, OK, this is what my options
- 12:29are for my political beliefs. Don't get your political beliefs
- 12:33from some list that other people put out.
- 12:36Don't just base your beliefs on, OK, well, what does Rand Paul
- 12:41say at the moment or what does you know, Zoran Mandani say, or
- 12:45what does Donald Trump say that I need to hold as my political
- 12:48beliefs today? No, don't let man or woman
- 12:52determine your political beliefs.
- 12:54Determine your political beliefs based on the word of God.
- 13:00Oh, I'm supposed to be focusing on on Jesus.
- 13:02I went right to application on we we need to be having our
- 13:06understanding of of political state based on the word of God.
- 13:09Well, that was certainly true with Jesus as he was killed by
- 13:13the political leaders of his time and he understood that he
- 13:16was dying for our sin. And so even as he was talking
- 13:20with Pontius Pilate, I can remember this situation where
- 13:23Jesus says, you know, if, if my Kingdom were of this world, my
- 13:28followers would fight. But as it stands, the, the
- 13:32person that's actually, you know, the most culpable for
- 13:36what's happening here is the Sanhedrin.
- 13:38It's, it's those that have delivered me to you that have
- 13:41committed the greater evil. And so Jesus knew fully what was
- 13:45happening with Pontius Pilate and with Herod and with the
- 13:49Sanhedrin. And he understood more than they
- 13:52did because he understood the word of God and he obeyed it.
- 13:55And because he perfectly obeyed it, He was our perfect
- 13:57sacrifice. Verse 101.
- 14:00I've kept my feet from every evil path to follow your word.
- 14:04This is certainly the goal that all of us have, but none of us
- 14:08except for Jesus have actually followed through on this, that
- 14:12Jesus truly never walked an evil path.
- 14:15He never said an evil word. He never thought an evil
- 14:18thought. What an incredible God that that
- 14:21is. We are so flawed and and we fail
- 14:25every single day, many of us every single hour or maybe even
- 14:29every minute, we fail to be who God has created us to be.
- 14:32But Jesus, because he followed God's word, because he followed
- 14:36scripture, he followed the heart of the Father.
- 14:38He never walked an evil path. And I'm so grateful that because
- 14:44he was perfect, his perfection is placed onto our account as we
- 14:48call on Him to be our Lord and our Savior.
- 14:52Verse one O 2. I've not turned from your
- 14:55judgments for you yourself have instructed me.
- 14:59I I don't know what Jesus knew while he was on this earth.
- 15:08I don't know if even in the Manger if he had full cognizance
- 15:15as the eternal God, the Son of all of eternity past that he had
- 15:20spent with his Father and now was not in the Father's
- 15:25presence. He He was in the Father's
- 15:27presence. And as much as God is
- 15:29omnipresent, He is wherever he desires to be.
- 15:32And Jesus would often pray to the Father because he knew that
- 15:35He was there, but not being, if you will, in heaven with the
- 15:40Father for the first time in all of eternity.
- 15:41I I wonder if Jesus thought about the directives and the
- 15:46commands of God that that Jesus communicated to mankind
- 15:50everything that the Father told him.
- 15:54You can think even about the times in Scripture where the
- 15:58Angel of Yahweh appears. That's the messenger of Yahweh
- 16:02that is worshipped and adored. And even as he speaks, Scripture
- 16:07talks about it as though God himself is speaking.
- 16:10And so when you read the the Angel of Yahweh or the Angel of
- 16:14the Lord in the Old Old Testament, you should think
- 16:17about Jesus. And I think about Sinai where
- 16:21the 10 commandments and the law is given to Moses.
- 16:24And what is told to us in the rest of Scripture is that no one
- 16:29has seen God at any time but Moses as he is there, He does
- 16:35see God. And so who does he see if he has
- 16:38not seen the Father at any time, as John one would tell us?
- 16:42Well, the answer is he saw Jesus and as Jesus communicated the 10
- 16:47commandments, then as he lived this life, what he himself gave
- 16:53to Moses, you know, 1314, hundred years later, then he
- 16:59obeyed it. And he had never turned away
- 17:02from what was right because the Father had given him what he
- 17:06should give to us, that we would walk with God through the word
- 17:12that Jesus brought to us from the Father.
- 17:15What, what an incredible thought that the Father has given that
- 17:20he gave scripture to the Son to communicate to us and, and
- 17:26certainly the Holy Spirit as well.
- 17:28Man, it's just that's way too, way too deep.
- 17:31My, my brains going to explode if I dwell on that any longer.
- 17:34But what a thought that Jesus obeyed the commands of God the
- 17:38Father. And because God told Jesus what
- 17:40to do, Jesus did it and he never turned from the judgments of
- 17:44God. Verse one of three, how sweet
- 17:46your word is to my taste, sweeter than honey in my mouth.
- 17:51Jesus never begrudgingly did the will of God.
- 17:54He was enthused. He was excited to obey the word
- 17:59of his Father. And may we have that desire too,
- 18:03that the word of God is something we pursue and that we
- 18:05love and that we want to constantly, if you will, imbibe.
- 18:09Then verse one O 4. As we end, I gain understanding
- 18:13from your precepts. Therefore I hate every false
- 18:17way, and Jesus because of his hatred for sin, but his love for
- 18:22sinners, He died in our place. The false way that he hated, He
- 18:32took on himself, that our sins got placed on Him so his
- 18:37righteousness could be placed on us.
- 18:41I'll end with first John 31. Behold what manner of love the
- 18:47Father has given to us, that we should be called the children of
- 18:52God. And so we are.
- 18:56There is no one greater than Jesus Christ.
- 18:58If you've never given your life over to Him, asking Him to be
- 19:01your Savior and your Lord, you can pray that today to say,
- 19:05Jesus, I know that I'm a Sinner. I know that because of my sin
- 19:09I'm alienated from you and that my eventual destination is hell.
- 19:15But Jesus, I believe that you died on the cross for my sin in
- 19:18my place, that you were buried and you rose again.
- 19:21Please come into my life and save me and help me to live for
- 19:25you. When you pray, that scripture
- 19:28says whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
- 19:32And then if you truly believe that, then profess it publicly
- 19:37through being baptized. And if you have any questions
- 19:40about that, I would love to answer those for you.
- 19:42Would love to baptize you, but happy Christmas Eve to you and
- 19:47looking forward to Christmas tomorrow.
