- 0:00Speaker 1: What happened to me in my life is statistically impossible.
- 0:03So someone upstairs was looking out. Yet I wasn't showing
- 0:06that respect of saying I trust that you love me.
- 0:09Speaker 2: I trust that everything is going to be okay.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Giving that trust to the universe, I've seen amazing, miraculous
- 0:14things start to happen in my life. You and your
- 0:22wife have the most amazing eyes. So having to stare
- 0:26directly at you and do this podcast, I feel like
- 0:29I'm slowly falling in love.
- 0:31Speaker 2: So there you go, so now we can do this.
- 0:33I have to stare into those schools.
- 0:35Speaker 3: So this is why you don't look at me. And
- 0:37this is why I was like, it's like scood, it
- 0:39doesn't give me icon.
- 0:39Speaker 2: That's funny.
- 0:40Speaker 1: The Prince is right there because there's that famous joke
- 0:42of like, never look prince in the eyes, You'll fall
- 0:43in love. This is what you learned the Jay Shattered podcast.
- 0:47Speaker 3: I love it, man, And you look different since the
- 0:48last time I saw you. Yeah, shaved shaved, and you
- 0:51look well there you look great man. Thanks man, And
- 0:54I wanted I wanted to tell people because I think
- 0:57when people see people connecting that I don't realize sometimes
- 1:01how organically people meet and I want to share that
- 1:04story if that's okay, and you can fill in the details.
- 1:08But it was a couple of years ago. We were
- 1:09at our mutual friend, Justin Bordoni's movie premiere. Yeah, he
- 1:13had the movie coming out five feet apart, and I
- 1:17went to the movie premier. I was running late. I
- 1:19didn't think I was going to make it. I was like,
- 1:21oh gosh, I don't want to let Justin down. I
- 1:23really want to be there for him. And then I'm
- 1:26walking in and then I see you walking in, and
- 1:28I knew who you were based on all the incredible
- 1:31work you've been doing for two decades now or more.
- 1:36Speaker 1: And I knew you, and I didn't know that I
- 1:39was a fan of what you were putting out there
- 1:41and I was in the positivity. So when I saw you,
- 1:44I got just as excited.
- 1:46Speaker 3: So I got excited, and I was in this space
- 1:48where I was like, I have to go and tell him,
- 1:50because if someone's impacted your life or you love the
- 1:53artists they work with the work that they do. Today,
- 1:56we're going to discuss all the philanthropy work you're doing
- 1:58when you're into some and I feel like it's so
- 2:01important to not go and ask for a picture, but
- 2:03to go and express how you feel about them. And
- 2:05so I came up to you and I was like, Scooter,
- 2:07I'm a big fan of all the work you're doing. Congratulations.
- 2:10And then when you said it back to me, and
- 2:13I remember the words you said, they were so powerful,
- 2:15and it just showed me how present you were. And
- 2:19I think maybe you know, people don't know this about
- 2:21you because not everyone gets to bump into you. But
- 2:23you were like, I said, the work you're doing is
- 2:25really important, thank you for doing it. And you said
- 2:28you're doing the most important work and I meant it yeah,
- 2:31and it was it really touched my heart. I was
- 2:33so you know, I was so humbled and honored to
- 2:36hear that from you.
- 2:37Speaker 1: And then we were like, well, let's get together, and
- 2:39I think you kind of looked at me when I
- 2:40said it, as like, okay, yeah, I'm not really going
- 2:43to get together definitely, And we ended up going for
- 2:46lunch the next day.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Yeah, our wives met and.
- 2:52Speaker 1: We became friends, you know, and then you joined us
- 2:56on a trip, and you know, it's I just I'm
- 2:59so happy to see your message getting louder and louder
- 3:01and bigger and bigger, because I think you're giving people
- 3:05a lot of the things they need to hear, and
- 3:06a lot of positivity and allowing them to slow down
- 3:09and take a breath.
- 3:10Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you, man. And I've always felt that support
- 3:12from you, and we've had some amazing trips and some
- 3:15good walks, and some good walks as well, some really
- 3:17important walks and meaningful times in my life. And sure
- 3:21you've always been so helpful, mentoring, supportive as well, and
- 3:24so thank you. But today I think you know, the
- 3:26fascinating thing for me is that you have these incredible
- 3:31artists that you founded. You then have the man behind
- 3:35the people, the work the person, but then even far
- 3:38removed from that, you have the work that the man
- 3:41is doing behind the scenes. And so it's almost like
- 3:44you're twice removed the real you. The behind the scenes
- 3:48version of you is almost so distant from what people
- 3:52experience on the front lines. That's what I want to
- 3:55discover today and share today, because that's what I feel
- 3:58I got a glimpse of.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I think you did.
- 4:00Speaker 1: And I think it's so funny that we're doing this
- 4:03because we talked about.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Doing this pre COVID.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Yeah, and then COVID hit and a lot of things happened,
- 4:08a lot of things changed, and you know, for me,
- 4:12COVID was an opportunity to slow down and do some
- 4:15real self reflection and self work, which I think we
- 4:19all should be doing at all times. You know, I
- 4:21really came to terms with the fact that as long
- 4:23as I'm breathing, I'm a student. And it's funny that
- 4:28you start there, because obviously my nickname is Scooter and
- 4:32my given name was Scott, and I can tell you
- 4:37I don't remember ever liking the name Scott until now.
- 4:41You know, I didn't realize until I've did the work
- 4:44I've done really over the last six months, that I
- 4:48kind of left Scott behind in a way and built
- 4:53something that I thought was powerful enough to be in
- 4:55the world, something that I thought deserved to be loved.
- 4:57Speaker 2: By the world.
- 4:59Speaker 1: And I didn't realize subconsciously how much I had left
- 5:05that inner child behind, and my friends didn't realize it.
- 5:09And I was having fun everything else, but I was
- 5:11always kind of trying to build something new because of.
- 5:16Speaker 2: You know, you and I spoke about this. One of
- 5:19the quotes that I loved.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Someone said many times we don't know our trauma because
- 5:23it was never ours. And you know, my grandparents are
- 5:27Holocaust survivors, and my parents went through what they went through,
- 5:30and I feel like I kind of inherited some of
- 5:32that where I always felt like, when is it going
- 5:34to get taken away? When are they going to show
- 5:37up and take it away from me? So I was
- 5:38always building for something else to protect me and my family,
- 5:43not realizing that everything that I ever needed was right
- 5:46here in the present and doing this work. I went
- 5:50back and got Scott and I think you saw a
- 5:53glimpse of that. Certain friends of mine saw glimpse of that,
- 5:55and I feel like, coming out of COVID, I'm putting
- 5:58that more on the forefront.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Yeah. Hearing that, Yeah, I started there just because I
- 6:02think it's the root of today's conversation. You know, us
- 6:04sitting down here today is two friends wanting to go
- 6:08deep in a conversation we would have offline but online.
- 6:12And hearing you say that is so freeing. I'm sure
- 6:16for everyone who's listening and watching for themselves too, because
- 6:19I think all of us are holding onto a trauma
- 6:21that's not ours or something that we experience let's focus
- 6:25on that. Let's go back then to what were you
- 6:27like as a kid, because I'm intrigued to know I
- 6:30didn't know you then. What were you like like? Were
- 6:32you always confident? Was there and insecurity? What is it
- 6:37that you were working through as a kid, or at
- 6:39least in hindsight, you.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Know, look out of respect for people that I love.
- 6:43Speaker 1: There's certain things I'm not going to go into only
- 6:45because I realized now that we all see the world
- 6:50through our lens, and when you really start to do
- 6:53the work, you realize that things that happened to you
- 6:57a lot of times were happening to you because it's
- 6:59all that people knew, you know, and that it's not
- 7:02about resenting anyone or being angry. It's actually about loving
- 7:06more and then changing the pattern, you know, because you're
- 7:09choosing that for yourself. So what I can tell you
- 7:13is I was a very sensitive, loving kid and loved everybody,
- 7:21loved having fun, loved shining my light out there, but
- 7:24was super sensitive. And I think as I grew up,
- 7:28I was you know, I was raised for a tough world,
- 7:32and I was raised by very loving people, but there
- 7:35was a lot of trauma, you know that you know,
- 7:38like I said, the Holocaust like things happened, and when
- 7:42people go through that, they're trying to protect their next generation,
- 7:44they're trying to protect their loved ones. So they're giving
- 7:47them that what you need to look out for. And
- 7:51I'm grateful for that many ways because there's great things
- 7:53that come with that. But also, as a child, you
- 7:55don't really have that rational thought until you're like six
- 7:58or eight years old, so you're interpreting things the way
- 8:01you are. You don't realize you're setting these patterns. And
- 8:05I'm not embarrassed to say this, you know, one of
- 8:07the things I did during COVID. In fact, I'm not
- 8:09the opposite embarrassed. I'm grateful to these people. I had
- 8:13canceled four times on something called the Hoffman process, and
- 8:17I finally went in October because you know, friends were
- 8:21pushing me and saying this is going to be great
- 8:23for you, and I was like, what do I need
- 8:24this for?
- 8:25Speaker 2: Like?
- 8:25Speaker 1: And I finally went, and it was the greatest gift
- 8:28I ever gave myself. And it was the first time
- 8:30in twenty years that I went no phone, no email,
- 8:34no TV. I was completely ingrained in this process, and
- 8:38funny enough, which is why you and I haven't connected.
- 8:40When I got out, everyone was like, Okay, he's going
- 8:43to turn his phone back on. And I actually got
- 8:45a burner phone and didn't turn my actual phone back
- 8:48on until the end of the year. Wow, until twenty
- 8:51twenty one. Really, and I you know, my team stepped
- 8:56up for me. I was kind of going through a
- 8:58couple different people, and you know, giving the suggestions and helping,
- 9:01and the artists that I work with were incredibly respectful
- 9:06of it and appreciative because you know, I'd been there
- 9:09for them, and I remember them looking at me like,
- 9:11now it's time for us to be here for you
- 9:12and let you go through you know, your learning or whatever.
- 9:16And and I've really had a shift in my life.
- 9:19And I couldn't be more grateful, because you go through
- 9:23and things are going good. You're seeing other people in
- 9:25their trauma, You're seeing other people with whatever they're going through,
- 9:30and you don't want to look at yourself because you're like, well,
- 9:32my life's so good, I have nothing to complain about.
- 9:35I don't I don't need to do this work because
- 9:37who am I to even say I need help? You know,
- 9:40when people are really going through proms I should just
- 9:42focus on the good things in my life. And what
- 9:45I realized is we all deserve the right to slow
- 9:48down and say why am I hurting? What am I
- 9:52going through? What work can I do? And I'm grateful
- 9:56that a lot of people that love me push me
- 9:58to do that.
- 9:58Speaker 3: That's amazing. I'm so and you told me you did
- 10:00that recently when we were talking. I was so happy,
- 10:04and the other conversation we had that was attached to that,
- 10:06it actually brought me so much joy because I feel
- 10:09like when someone in your life that you care for
- 10:12actually invests in themselves and now is saying no to
- 10:16certain opportunities or delaying events in their life or priorities
- 10:20in their life, like huge priorities. I mean, your artists
- 10:23have huge like not huge is not in astronomical careers
- 10:27with constant releases, with constant work, And the fact that
- 10:31you took that time, they're getting to see what you're prioritizing.
- 10:35And what I find so special about that is you
- 10:39had to It's amazing to think about this, but you
- 10:42had to feel you were worthy of that time, that
- 10:46you had to feel like you deserved it, and that
- 10:49you couldn't just neglect it because yes, you do have
- 10:52a blessed, fortunate life which you're grateful for. Tell us
- 10:55about that feeling of feeling worthy, because I feel like
- 11:00that's such a.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Feeling like you're enough. To be honest with you, I
- 11:03think you know.
- 11:04Speaker 1: One of the things I learned there is we have
- 11:06these core shame lies, you know that we tell ourselves
- 11:09that affect us and create our fear and create our
- 11:11transference with other people.
- 11:13Speaker 2: And it's not the root of things. I mean.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I got a new tattoo actually when I got out
- 11:17it says love more on my chest because that's the
- 11:20number one lesson I learned. That's how you need to
- 11:22respond to really most things. And I'm working on that
- 11:25every single day with everything. Whenever I feel resistance, I realize,
- 11:28oh my god, this isn't there's a lesson for me here.
- 11:32One of the things I had to realize is that
- 11:34I'm good enough, because there's this weird thing that like
- 11:37you kind of go through life wondering are you good enough?
- 11:39And all these things are happening for you, and you're wondering,
- 11:41do I really deserve this?
- 11:42Speaker 2: Am I good enough?
- 11:43Speaker 1: The other thing I realized was none of us truly
- 11:49love ourselves unconditionally, and then how we're supposed to love
- 11:52other people unconditionally. To me, the way God loves us
- 11:55is unconditional. And one of the things I really had
- 11:58to go through. And you know, when I'm reminding myself
- 12:01every day in my daily meditations now, is that one
- 12:04you're good enough to, you're lovable to every allone else
- 12:07deserves love. And then the biggest thing I'm realizing is
- 12:12that I need to trust, you know, trust in the unknown,
- 12:16because you go out there and I got to make
- 12:18this happen. I'm asleep when I'm dead, like all these
- 12:21different things. And the truth is what happened to me
- 12:23in my life is statistically impossible. So someone upstairs was
- 12:29looking out and they've given me a life with every
- 12:32single sign that God loves me and is looking out
- 12:35for me. Yet I wasn't showing that respect of saying
- 12:38I trust that you love me, I trust that everything's
- 12:41going to be okay. And giving that trust to the universe,
- 12:46I've seen amazing, miraculous things start to happen in my life,
- 12:51and I can tell you it's almost like I'm prospering
- 12:54better than ever before because of that and the challenges
- 12:58have been getting harder and harder and cantinuing. But it's
- 13:01almost like these tools now are allowing me for the
- 13:03waves to hit me, and I'm swimming through them and
- 13:05I'm understanding with everything, there's something else to be learned.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:09Speaker 3: See, when I'm hearing you say it, you can tell
- 13:11that it's been so realized because a lot of these
- 13:14things we hear them in daily talk, like oh yeah,
- 13:17you should learn from everything in life, and every challenge
- 13:20has a lesson and an opportunity. But when you hear
- 13:24someone say it and they're living it, it just it
- 13:27sounds different and it hits different. And the biggest thing
- 13:30you said which really resonated with me just now is
- 13:32the idea of the love more the tattoo you go.
- 13:35I read this incredible statement from a writer called Russell Barkley.
- 13:40He's no longer with us, but the statement he said,
- 13:42like literally this is like it's changed how I view
- 13:46every situation and it correlates so similarly to the experience
- 13:49you had. So Russell Barkley said, people who need the
- 13:53most love often ask for it in the most unloving ways.
- 14:00Literally every day when I'm living my life, I see
- 14:03people ask me for love sometimes in the most unloving ways,
- 14:07and I think we've all experienced that big time, where
- 14:10someone's criticizing you, but really they just want love. Where
- 14:13someone's trying to get something from you or reaching out
- 14:17to you, but they want love. Like everyone's ultimately seeking love,
- 14:20but they are seeking it through validation or attention.
- 14:24Speaker 2: And I think we learned that as a kid.
- 14:25Speaker 1: I mean, I told my dad, you know recently that
- 14:30you loved me so unconditionally that I see through the
- 14:33lives of fear, you know, because how you know, we
- 14:38were giving our kids in a weird way, sometimes transactional
- 14:41love because we're trying to teach them lessons and then
- 14:44you go through life. And I never thought I was
- 14:46a transactional person because I'm not like that with money. Yeah,
- 14:49but I realized I was like that weirdly with love,
- 14:51you know. And I was like that with respect, Oh,
- 14:55I'm not going to you know, you got to respect
- 14:56me or respect is earned. Well, Actually, I can give
- 15:00respect without receiving it. Yes, you know, I can give
- 15:02love without receiving it. You know, I can do that
- 15:05from my own self. I'm just gonna respond with kindness
- 15:08because That's what I'm working on. And by the way,
- 15:10it doesn't always work like there are mornings you wake
- 15:14up and you're fresh and we're human and I think,
- 15:16a beautiful thing my teacher said to me recently, He said,
- 15:19why are you giving yourself these unrealistic expectations?
- 15:23Speaker 2: And it was so beautiful what he said. It was
- 15:25he said, if you.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Say to yourself, I'm gonna work out every single day
- 15:28this month, and then you miss one workout, you know
- 15:31what you normally do, you end up missing three or
- 15:32four because you're kind of ashamed that you missed that
- 15:35once you kind of fall off the wagon. The truth is,
- 15:39stop giving yourself this crazy expectation and give yourself some
- 15:41self compassion. We're not perfect, we're flawed. So if I
- 15:45miss that workout, you know what, that's okay. I'll get
- 15:47back on it tomorrow, you know. And the same thing
- 15:50goes with anger, with frustration. You're allowed to fall and
- 15:55stumble and then realize it and can get back on.
- 15:57Speaker 2: And that's the biggest thing I'm working on.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Because I'm a perfection I want to you know, I
- 16:01want to get this learning right. But it doesn't it
- 16:05doesn't end here, you know, it's if it ends I die,
- 16:08you know, and then I could probably come back and
- 16:10learn again, which is by way anyone wants to understand.
- 16:14Speaker 2: You and I have talked about this.
- 16:15Speaker 1: Many Lives, Many Masters by Brian Weiss is a very
- 16:17good book to read to kind of just give yourself
- 16:20an idea of why thinking about reincarnation. It's such a
- 16:23beautiful way to look at life. Yes, but yeah, it's
- 16:28these are the things you and I talked about.
- 16:29Speaker 3: I know.
- 16:31Speaker 1: No just saying it's people like again on the podcast
- 16:34and they're like, we're going to talk career and everything else,
- 16:36and I said, I want to do Jay's because we're
- 16:37probably not going to talk any career.
- 16:39Speaker 3: Yeah. Well for me, it's just this coming from hashtag
- 16:42no days off. So when I met you, it was
- 16:44hashtag no days off and I'm going down on a
- 16:47personal but we worked out together. I have never thrown
- 16:50up that bad. It's in my life.
- 16:52Speaker 1: If you remember, I was a little out of control
- 16:54with the expectations of working out, as I was like,
- 16:57are you okay?
- 16:58Speaker 3: We worked out together. We did this crazy circuit and
- 17:01I don't like high intensity for anyone who's listening or watching,
- 17:04and literally we did this workout? And you know, I mean,
- 17:07you could tell Scooter has got a completely different body
- 17:09to mine. I'm doing.
- 17:10Speaker 1: I'm not like I was back then, but I will
- 17:12say this is more competitive because you would not tell
- 17:15me you weren't okay, and I just said, Jay, you
- 17:17look a little No, I'm good, I'm good, Let's keep going.
- 17:19And there were three of us and you didn't want
- 17:22to be the one person falling out.
- 17:23Speaker 2: And then finally, finally you literally.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Sat down on the ground and you're like, I'm not okay,
- 17:34and just you said I'm gonna go to the bathroom
- 17:36and you disappeared for a good forty five Yeah.
- 17:38Speaker 3: Literally, I was, I was pukid like anything, but it
- 17:40was just yeah, it was. Yeah. I've always had that
- 17:42spirit of wanting to see how far I can go,
- 17:47and when I did that as a monk, there were
- 17:49experiences that broke me because we were doing crazy fasts,
- 17:53crazy meditations, and all it brought me back to was
- 17:56the realization that I wasn't Superman. Yeah, and I think
- 18:00that that's what I'm hearing from what I'm hearing you
- 18:02say too, is the idea of like, no matter how
- 18:05able you are and how capable you are, and the
- 18:07boundaries that you push we all still have.
- 18:10Speaker 1: And you're going to fall again. I'm having this learning
- 18:13and having this epiphany. I'm going to break again, yeah,
- 18:17you know, and this time I have tools to put
- 18:19my hand on my chest and say, we all suffer.
- 18:22The world is filled with suffering. Give yourself some self compassion, yeah,
- 18:25you know, and give it to others. And it's been
- 18:30a beautiful thing. And I credit some amazing people in
- 18:34my life who really pushed me to go there. And
- 18:40you know, when you go there, there's also sadness, you know,
- 18:42realizing how many things you missed because you were planning
- 18:46for something in the future, how many times you weren't
- 18:49present because you thought you had to protect something that
- 18:52you already had, you know. And I'm just grateful. I'm
- 18:58not going to spend another thirty nine years not knowing
- 19:01these things. Yeah, and I look forward to every five
- 19:04years telling you another level of learning.
- 19:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Yeah, it has to be that way, you know.
- 19:08Speaker 1: And I and I weirdly like the falls are where
- 19:14the greatest learnings are.
- 19:16Speaker 3: Thousand percent thousand percent. And that's and that's the problem, right,
- 19:19what you just said about missing a day over workout
- 19:22and then it ends up missing four days. It's the
- 19:24same when we go, okay, well now I'm not going
- 19:26to fall because I found a new place of enlightenment.
- 19:30And what we don't realize is, again, like you said,
- 19:32it may not be every five days, but every three
- 19:34or four years, there's going to be another moment of revolution.
- 19:37And when you keep thinking, oh, no, no, this time,
- 19:39I've got it, that's that's where the mistake is made,
- 19:42is like, oh, this time it's not going to happen.
- 19:44But tell me about what does it take? Because I
- 19:47remember you discussing the Hoffman project with me when we
- 19:50first met, and you were like, oh, I think you
- 19:52of going to this, et cetera. I want to know
- 19:54a bit more about the process of Hoffman so that
- 19:56everyone can be exposed to and understand a bit more
- 19:58as much as they can. But also like what does
- 20:01it take for someone like you to go in that direction?
- 20:05Like what does it take? What happened? What's going on
- 20:10in order to urge you and encouraging you.
- 20:12Speaker 2: It's not as significant, Yeah, yeah it's not. No, it
- 20:16wasn't like you know.
- 20:18Speaker 1: It was funny when I went I started and my
- 20:20wife and I started hearing all kinds of rumors of
- 20:22he's gone crazy, and this is not like because I
- 20:24was away and you know, all kinds of weird things.
- 20:26Speaker 2: But it wasn't that.
- 20:27Speaker 1: It was just feeling like I wasn't present in my
- 20:31life and feeling like the people around me who love me,
- 20:38I felt they're hurt because one we're all coming in
- 20:43with our own trauma, and weirdly our trauma was matching
- 20:46up and I couldn't fix it. I'm a fixer, you know.
- 20:53I'm the guy who, since I was a kid, I'm
- 20:55gonna make it be okay for everybody. And there was
- 20:58this child. I just couldn't fit things in this moment
- 21:02in time. And suddenly, because I couldn't fix things, I
- 21:07started to spiral. I started to literally lean more into
- 21:12my negative patterns of wanting to control things because I
- 21:16couldn't fix things, and my heart was in the best place.
- 21:19I wanted everything to be okay and everyone to be happy,
- 21:22but I couldn't get everything in the right place. And
- 21:26I'd been playing that chess game for so long and
- 21:29the board was getting away from me. And suddenly I
- 21:33realized a very dark thought came into my head. The
- 21:38ultimate I'm not enough, the ultimate I shouldn't be here,
- 21:42that's not me. And when that thought entered my mind,
- 21:46I said, what are you doing here? I said, Oh,
- 21:49I've never gone that dark. And I signed up for
- 21:53the Hoffmann Process the next day.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Why Hoffman tell us a bit about it for anyone
- 21:57who doesn't know, because I think I love giving credit
- 22:01where it's due to places and.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Started by a guy named Bob Hoffman in the United States,
- 22:06there's one in the NAPA area and there's one in Connecticut.
- 22:11An amazing woman named Liza was the one who is
- 22:13one of the co CEOs with her husband, and it's
- 22:16a nonprofit. It's just an amazing process that really delves
- 22:19into spirituality, delves into early childhood, delves into your trauma,
- 22:23your patterns, and you give yourself over for basically seven days.
- 22:28Speaker 3: No phone, no phone, no email, kids, You're.
- 22:31Speaker 1: No working out, no book, no nothing. And there's a
- 22:35lot of writing. What I will say to you is
- 22:38I don't want to go into what the processes because
- 22:40it's important. Whoever does it is surprised.
- 22:44Speaker 2: But what was interesting is I started, I had certain people.
- 22:47Speaker 1: You know what you need, you need to go to
- 22:48Hoffman and I had canceled four times, and it was
- 22:50always a reason, I'm not going to go to this.
- 22:52Speaker 2: I don't need this, Like I'm busy.
- 22:54Speaker 1: And one of my friends, who's one of the most
- 22:57brilliant friends I have, he said to me when I
- 23:02went in, I went in to manipulate it so I
- 23:05can come out and show the people I love. Look,
- 23:06I did this. Aren't you proud of me? Because someone
- 23:09that you know, he loved had done it. And he
- 23:11looked at me and he said, you can't manipulate this.
- 23:14And I was fascinated that he said that, because he's
- 23:16such a smart guy. And I'm like, what could they
- 23:18really do in a week? And he said, it's going
- 23:20to be the most remarkable experience of your life. And
- 23:23my other friend Penny had said it to me, and
- 23:25you know, and I.
- 23:27Speaker 2: I decided I'm going to go. And it felt like
- 23:30I was.
- 23:30Speaker 1: It was gone for a year almost, you know, And
- 23:32I really gave myself over to this process and made
- 23:35really amazing friendships. I wasn't like sharing. You share feelings
- 23:39and you know, different things, and I opened up in
- 23:41a way that I never expected. And I laugh now
- 23:44because I look back at the timeline of when we
- 23:46did things, because I had this workbook, and I realized
- 23:49that day two, I remember having such an intimate conversation
- 23:52with my teacher, and I thought that must have been
- 23:54day five.
- 23:55Speaker 2: It was day two, you know.
- 23:57Speaker 1: And Yeah, I went in deep and I uncovered a
- 24:00lot of things, and I realized a lot of things
- 24:02about myself, about my patterns, about forgiveness for myself, understanding
- 24:09of things, forgiveness of others, and I was just eternally grateful.
- 24:16Speaker 2: And was interesting is when I came out, I had this, Oh.
- 24:20Speaker 1: I'm so happy, I'm so in love with life and
- 24:23myself and the world and people.
- 24:25Speaker 2: And I came back and I entered a lot of darkness.
- 24:31Speaker 1: And the tools that I got at Hofman allowed me
- 24:34to understand that the darkness was because that's what God
- 24:38wanted me to have, That's what There were lessons that
- 24:43I needed to learn. I'd now been given these tools,
- 24:45and there was no darkness. There was an opportunity to learn.
- 24:50There was an opportunity to go deeper every single day.
- 24:54And I always found that when I was doing my meditations,
- 24:57the biggest revelations were my deepest breaths, my longest deepest breaths,
- 25:01I'd have the deepest revelations. And I in one of
- 25:04my meditations, I realized, that's life. I've been going around
- 25:08taking these quick breaths, treating my life that way, and
- 25:11I wasn't slowing down enough in life to take a
- 25:13deep breath and let.
- 25:14Speaker 2: It come to me.
- 25:17Speaker 1: And and that is that just comes down to know self,
- 25:21forgiveness and you know, and a lot of a lot
- 25:25of beautiful things.
- 25:25Speaker 2: And I'm really grateful to you know, the people.
- 25:29Speaker 1: I will never say who I was there with because
- 25:31they don't do that, and no one has ever said
- 25:33I was there. This is actually the first time I
- 25:34publicly said that I was there, and it was a
- 25:37very cool thing. I'm very grateful and now sharing this,
- 25:41there's so many other people who come to me of
- 25:42like they're things of self work that they've done, and
- 25:45they're like, you should try this and try this, and
- 25:47it's just a very exciting place to be. And I
- 25:51can tell you the greatest gift of all is for
- 25:55my children. You know, I was a good dad before.
- 25:59I love my kids. I'd come home every night put
- 26:01them to sleep, and you know, and I'm married to
- 26:04super Mom. She's awesome, and I am present with my
- 26:10children in a way that I didn't know possible before.
- 26:14And I think that's the greatest thing often gave me.
- 26:17Speaker 3: It's it's so it's so beautiful listening to someone have
- 26:21that experience, Like I consider and just listen to you
- 26:23all day because it's it is it's so gratifying to
- 26:26the soul, like on a much more deeper spiritual level,
- 26:30to hear someone having that experience and and and doing
- 26:34that work. And how does that? And I do want
- 26:37to talk a bit about career on this on this
- 26:39level of frequency, because what I'm fascinated by, and I
- 26:43think this is what people often don't see as symbiotic,
- 26:47is how spiritual inside leads to spiritual career practice. How
- 26:54does how does someone like you take this very profound
- 26:57experience and work. And by the way, have having known
- 27:00you for a few years, like I know that this
- 27:02wasn't just seven days of work. This is years and
- 27:04years and years and years. There's yeah, exactly in seven
- 27:07days where the seven days like accelerates and like really
- 27:10makes it powerful and meaningful. But you've been doing this
- 27:13for a while and thinking about these things for a while,
- 27:16how does that then manifest in your work. How do
- 27:19you take this energy? Is it how you're dealing with people,
- 27:23is it how you're creating stuff? How does someone do that?
- 27:25Because I think a lot of people, even I get
- 27:27asked this question a lot is like they say, spirituality
- 27:30and business is like almost separate.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I completely disagree.
- 27:33Speaker 3: Yes, same. You know.
- 27:34Speaker 2: The other thing I.
- 27:35Speaker 1: Want to point out, because I've been thinking a lot
- 27:36about this, is that the same way I said that,
- 27:40I believe you get the lessons when you're supposed to
- 27:42get them. I believe you're supposed to. I don't think
- 27:46I should have had this mentality in the beginning of
- 27:49my career. I think that I'm exactly where I'm supposed
- 27:52to be. The universe wants me to be exactly where
- 27:55I am, so things I needed to be a certain
- 28:00way at certain points to learn those things for those
- 28:03things to happen. And now this is where I am
- 28:06at thirty nine, and this is where I needed to learn.
- 28:08And now you know, I'm having a different kind of grace,
- 28:13I'm having a different kind of empathy. I'm understanding to
- 28:16let go and allow people to have their process and
- 28:20their journey in a different way because I'm understanding my
- 28:23own in a different way. I'm not having this need
- 28:28to justify. You know, there's times where I'm seeing how
- 28:35I'm like, well, they're seeing my growth as like, oh,
- 28:40he got there, and I'm sitting there like, well, you
- 28:41haven't got there either, And I'm smiling to myself because
- 28:45it's not my place to say that, because it wasn't
- 28:46their place to say it to me, you know, And
- 28:49I'm here to you know, it's almost funny we talk
- 28:52about different religions, you and I and I'm Jewish. You know,
- 28:56I've grown up in a Christian society and I've gotten
- 28:58to a place also where under standing. I don't want
- 29:00to live my Judaism and fear. You know, thousands of
- 29:05years of persecution gave us strength, but also a lot
- 29:09of fear and telling us we can't go near something.
- 29:12Speaker 2: Yet.
- 29:13Speaker 1: You know, Moses married Supporah, who was not Jewish, and
- 29:18when he brought her to his people and he said
- 29:20she loves me and everything, no would question that. Just
- 29:22years of assimilation and losing identity cause us to have
- 29:25a tremendous amount of fear.
- 29:26Speaker 2: And I don't want to live with that fear anymore.
- 29:27Speaker 1: I want to explore other spiritualities and be true to
- 29:30myself and my own you know, I'm not afraid to
- 29:32hear the wisdom of another spirituality. So you know, my friend,
- 29:36he was giving a sermon. He's Christian, and I've listened,
- 29:38and I thought it was beautiful. He was saying in
- 29:40the Book of Matthew, it's not about saying it and
- 29:42teaching it, it's about living it and letting someone else
- 29:45see it.
- 29:45Speaker 2: And I've now seen that.
- 29:46Speaker 1: You know, We've talked about it within your religion, and
- 29:50I'm trying to get to that place of like, I
- 29:52don't have all the answers.
- 29:54Speaker 2: I'm figuring it out every single day.
- 29:56Speaker 1: I am as flawed as they get, you know, but
- 29:58I'm just going to try to live my best, you know.
- 30:01And you know, last night I did a clubhouse talk
- 30:04with Demi and she became my client over the past
- 30:08year and she's been through a lot. We have this
- 30:10amazing documentary coming out, and she and I.
- 30:15Speaker 2: Were talking about her whole career.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Every time she faltered, she has the strength to get
- 30:19back up, and people call her a role model, and
- 30:22she's like, I'm just afraid because it's just too much
- 30:25perfection to live in and then I always crash. And
- 30:28she started to do interviews for this new album and
- 30:30she's like, I want to be a role model.
- 30:31Speaker 2: And I called her up. I said, what are you doing?
- 30:33Speaker 1: I said, you're giving yourself that same sense self, you know,
- 30:37perfection that caused you to fall before.
- 30:40Speaker 2: I said, we got to change the word.
- 30:42Speaker 1: And I thought about my brother Adam, who has a
- 30:45nonprofit called Pencil Promise, and he told me I don't
- 30:48want to be called nonprofit. I want to be called
- 30:49for purpose. I don't want to say what we don't,
- 30:51don't want to say what we do. And I said,
- 30:55a DEMI stop calling yourself a role model. Let's go
- 30:58with real model. You're person, and you are flawed, and
- 31:02you are imperfect, and you are honest, and you don't
- 31:05have to be perfect ever again.
- 31:06Speaker 2: And we like that. And that's how she's saying now.
- 31:09Speaker 1: And I think if we start treating ourselves and others
- 31:13with this same sense of it's why I hate cancel culture.
- 31:17I mean, I understand we all have a lot of pain,
- 31:20but if we don't give people an opportunity for growth,
- 31:24what are we doing. We're just giving the next generation
- 31:26the same pain you know, and it's a hard thing
- 31:30to ask people.
- 31:31Speaker 2: It's a hard thing to ask.
- 31:32Speaker 1: When you've been abused, when you've been persecuted, when you've
- 31:34been mistreated.
- 31:36Speaker 2: To love your neighbor. You know, that's a very tall order.
- 31:40Speaker 1: And I don't think it's my right to tell someone
- 31:43to do it, but I can choose to start doing
- 31:46it in my own life. And I can tell you
- 31:48it's hard. It's hard, and I falter and I stumble sometimes.
- 31:52And I said to my wife just the other day,
- 31:55I said, hey, I caught myself the other day. I
- 31:57was upset with someone how they treated me. So I
- 32:01made a comment to you that wasn't the kindest comment
- 32:06about them. You know, it wasn't awful, but it just
- 32:09wasn't giving them their credit because I was upset about
- 32:11something that happened to me. I said, if you catch
- 32:14me doing that, can you just if you notice it,
- 32:16just tell me to stay in my heart. And she
- 32:18was like, I got you, And I think that's what
- 32:21I'm trying to do. I'm trying to stay there.
- 32:23Speaker 3: Yeah, And that's that accountability culture, Like you know, you
- 32:26have someone in your life that you're being accountable to,
- 32:29your wife and this example, and like that feeling of
- 32:32we do need accountability. We want to be accountable to ourselves,
- 32:35to the people we love, the people that are important.
- 32:37And I just want to point out, I don't know if
- 32:38you know this, how perfect it was that you said
- 32:40the real and role models thing. Tupac said, we need
- 32:42real models, not role models, and I'm looking at him,
- 32:44looking at you, and I'm like.
- 32:46Speaker 2: I'll take my shirt.
- 32:47Speaker 3: Ye yeah, show me that more. Love more. But it's
- 32:52so that's such a beautiful point. And you know, I
- 32:55want to share this because we talked about this and
- 32:58I struggled with that. So me and my wife, when
- 33:00we talk about relationships, we talk about our mistakes. If
- 33:04you listen to our podcast, she's been in my guest
- 33:06three times. Every year, we do an episode together and
- 33:08we talk about everything we get wrong, and the number
- 33:11one comment will be hashtag relationship goals, or the number
- 33:14one comment will be like hashtag cute ast couple or
- 33:16whatever it is, and my comment back will be, please
- 33:19listen to what I'm saying. And so what I find
- 33:22is that we've been conditioned and programmed to want someone
- 33:26to be perfect. DEMI you justin you know, a whoever
- 33:32me and my wife are one.
- 33:33Speaker 2: It's perfect.
- 33:34Speaker 3: None of us are perfect.
- 33:35Speaker 1: You and I talked once. I said, we're made to serve,
- 33:40not to be worshiped.
- 33:41Speaker 3: A thousand.
- 33:42Speaker 2: No one can live up to worship.
- 33:44Speaker 3: No one apart from God, you.
- 33:46Speaker 2: Know, worship God. Serve each other.
- 33:49Speaker 3: Yes, I love that thought is perfect and beautiful. But
- 33:54that's what I mean that, because we've been conditioned to
- 33:57want to worship humans, we direct that worship into an athlete,
- 34:01into a singer, into a teacher, into a guide, whoever
- 34:04it is. But it's a shame that even when you
- 34:07have someone opening up and saying what it's actually like,
- 34:10our programming up here is so strong that we still
- 34:12project perfection. So now the new trend is Before it
- 34:17was if you were flawless, or at least presented yourself
- 34:20as flawless, that was considered worship worthy. Today now it's
- 34:23the opposite. If someone's really vulnerable, that's worship worthy. But
- 34:26the point is what you just said is let's move
- 34:28away from worship completely and let's just serve and support
- 34:31each other.
- 34:32Speaker 2: I want to say two things. Yes, one is about
- 34:34you and one is about me.
- 34:35Speaker 3: Okay, it's good, we're both in the room.
- 34:38Speaker 1: I'm going to go with you first, just because, and
- 34:40then I can end on me so you don't feel bad.
- 34:41A little over a year ago, you called me and
- 34:43you say, can we go for a walk. And we
- 34:46went for a walk, and I said, this is the
- 34:49unfortunate thing that we do to each other. We get
- 34:51to this place where we just want to tear each
- 34:54other down. And there's that line in Batman where they say,
- 34:56you know, if you do it, you know well long.
- 34:58I forget the line perfectly, but it's like, if you
- 35:00do it.
- 35:00Speaker 2: Well long, right, if you do something long enough, you
- 35:03too would be the villain.
- 35:04Speaker 3: Yes, I know exactly what I mean. Yeah, let me
- 35:07find it. It's a good line.
- 35:08Speaker 2: It's I think I think Heath said it as the Joker.
- 35:11Speaker 3: You either die a hero or live long enough to
- 35:14see yourself become a villain.
- 35:16Speaker 2: Yeah, there you go.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, And that's so spot on and what we
- 35:20do to each other. And for me, I've recently watched
- 35:26The Queen's Gambit, specially the show on Netflix, which is fantastic,
- 35:31and I had coming out of Hoffin and seeing that
- 35:33I just had this epiphany that I had been this
- 35:36chess player, my whole life, I had stared at the
- 35:39board and people would come and show me attention and
- 35:42affection because of my skills on that board. So I thought, oh,
- 35:45that's love. So I'm going to keep playing this game.
- 35:48And people said, wow, you're really good at this. You're smart.
- 35:51You look at the career you're building, Look at the
- 35:53life you're building. The chess pieces are moving and moving
- 35:55and moving and moving. But I never took the time
- 35:57to stop, take a breath and say, hey, I'm really
- 35:59good at this game.
- 36:00Speaker 2: If you ever want to talk about it, I'm happy to.
- 36:02But my name's Scott. Nice to meet you.
- 36:04Speaker 1: Until now, and so many people that loved me didn't
- 36:11know me. That's where the darkness was coming from. Because
- 36:15I don't feel like I've changed. I feel like I've
- 36:18reclaimed myself. And that was the gift of this year,
- 36:25you know I and I've had so many friends out
- 36:28there such a change. I shaved because when I was
- 36:31doing a meditation, I saw the spiritual version of myself
- 36:34that I wanted to be. I didn't have a beard,
- 36:37and I literally shaved that night and I haven't had
- 36:38a beard since. And I feel good because I went
- 36:44back and got me, you know, And and I love
- 36:49the person that I was all these years, and that's
- 36:52a part of me. I just reclaimed the rest of me,
- 36:55and I was relying too much on one side of
- 36:57the body. I went and got the rest and now
- 36:59I'm walking in a straight line and not putting so
- 37:02much pressure on my right foot.
- 37:03Speaker 2: You know, it does.
- 37:06Speaker 1: And I have this teacher now who literally I will
- 37:10lay out things that have been done to me that
- 37:12are very anyone else would be like, and he looks
- 37:15at me and goes, well, what role did you play?
- 37:17And it's an interesting thing because you go through life
- 37:21just learning, and you know, I think that's why. You know,
- 37:26I would look and people thinking God, well, God forgive me,
- 37:28and I'd get frustrated growing up because I'd be like,
- 37:31you're just making an excuse using God. But I actually
- 37:35now realize why was I frustrated that they felt forgiven?
- 37:40Speaker 2: That was my stuff.
- 37:42Speaker 1: I'm angry that they felt forgiven because I hadn't forgiven
- 37:44myself for something, you know, And and I had my
- 37:47own work to do, and I was projecting my stuff
- 37:50on them. And the truth is, if we can all
- 37:54get to a place, if God sees everything that we're doing.
- 37:59He sees our messy because we're all messy, but he
- 38:03loves our messy. If we can get to a place
- 38:05we start to do love each other in the messy,
- 38:08that's when you start to feel really loved, you know.
- 38:11I started to love myself and the messy. Now I'm
- 38:14loving other people in my life and the messy, and
- 38:19that's real love. It's easy to love somebody when they're
- 38:22showing up for you all the time. It's easy to
- 38:25love someone when when they're doing good and they're giving
- 38:29you this ideal of perfection that makes you feel good,
- 38:32you know, or not even perfection.
- 38:33Speaker 3: They just makes you feel good.
- 38:35Speaker 1: It's so much harder to love somebody when they disappoint you,
- 38:40you know. And what I've started to realize is through
- 38:43my own actions, if someone's disappointing me, or when I've
- 38:46disappointed someone else, it's because I'm really disappointed in myself,
- 38:51you know, I'm projecting it onto somebody, and that's where
- 38:54that empathy comes from. And you and I could talk
- 38:56about this for hours, and I'm the first one to
- 38:59say I'm scratching the surface of this. I'm just figuring
- 39:03it out. I'm screwing up on a daily basis. And
- 39:06I'm just starting to really give myself empathy for the
- 39:10first time. And I'm excited about it, and I'm excited
- 39:13to learn. I'm excited to dig in and I'm excited
- 39:15to be present. I'm excited to have long conversations with
- 39:18people and like look them in their eyes, like I'm
- 39:21looking you in your gorgeous eyes there. But I've always
- 39:27been I want to honor you because I've always been
- 39:30grateful that you and I have had these conversations.
- 39:34Speaker 3: Yeah, me too. I mean it's been big for me
- 39:36because I think for me too, it's like you don't
- 39:40you don't you know when things are changing and moving
- 39:43and growing fast and you're not even aware of half
- 39:47the things, and I mean you do a million things,
- 39:49and so that's and that's partly the mistake also because
- 39:53you start recognizing, oh well, if I'm not aware or
- 39:56if I'm not conscious of everything I'm doing, then maybe
- 40:00I do need to slow down, Maybe I do need
- 40:02to change something, Maybe I do need to find the
- 40:03right people to be around me. And it all comes
- 40:06back to everything's trying to remind you to be conscious,
- 40:10to be awake, to not try and get away with
- 40:13being asleep, Like everything's trying to wake you up all
- 40:16the time, whereas we want to go to sleep in
- 40:18some areas of our life to be you know, like
- 40:21you want to be able to just let go of
- 40:22this thing here over here it's so exciting.
- 40:24Speaker 1: Yeah, it is when you start to have these discoveries
- 40:27within yourself that you want to share. So it's almost like, hey,
- 40:30the thing you've been learning the most when you're not talking,
- 40:34you know.
- 40:34Speaker 2: So it's like this economy.
- 40:36Speaker 1: And then there's that grace of just like it's okay,
- 40:40I don't have to be so hard on myself if
- 40:42I'm excited today.
- 40:43Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe I'm gonna overtalk. That's okay. Tomorrow I can
- 40:46be quiet.
- 40:46Speaker 3: Well, this is an interview with you.
- 40:48Speaker 1: Yeah, but I'm just saying like it's it's that it's
- 40:50giving yourself that grace of like and that that's another
- 40:53pattern like as a kid, like you know, you dim
- 40:55your light a little bit, like, oh, you're being too
- 40:56loud and getting to a place in your life where
- 41:01you know, when you're when your child is running in
- 41:04front of you and they're being louder, they you're not
- 41:06holding a grudge against your child. We hold these grudges
- 41:10as adults against ourselves and each other, but when we
- 41:13watch children play, they move on so quickly, and I
- 41:16wish we can get back to a little bit of that,
- 41:18you know, within ourselves. It's you know, even today, I
- 41:21found myself just now being like, oh, you're talking too much,
- 41:23and then maybe I am, but that's okay, you know,
- 41:27give myself a little bit of grace, like that's okay,
- 41:29and you know what, I can shut up too, and
- 41:32like there's no right or wrong here. It's two friends
- 41:35having a conversation and a bunch of people listening, and
- 41:38everyone's going to have a different reaction and that's okay.
- 41:42Speaker 3: Yeah. What does compassion mean when we say being compassionate
- 41:45with ourselves, It means to change your behavior enough so
- 41:50that you've shown that you've learned. But it means to
- 41:53love yourself as you're growing and changing that.
- 41:57Speaker 2: Which is confusing. It's confusing, but that's.
- 41:59Speaker 3: What it means. Because people hear the word compassion, they think, oh,
- 42:01you're just being soft on yourself, like oh, oh, you're
- 42:04not judging yourself, which means you're not holding yourself accountable.
- 42:06But being compassionate means I know I need to change
- 42:09my behavior. I'm gonna start doing that, but I'm gonna
- 42:12love myself while I do that.
- 42:13Speaker 1: And I think I love that you said that, because
- 42:16let's take it a step further. Let's go back to
- 42:17that workout. Yeah, right, If I'm actually being compassionate in myself,
- 42:21I'll get back on it the next day.
- 42:23Speaker 2: Yes, you know, it's.
- 42:25Speaker 1: We act as if we're especially with cancel culture, we
- 42:30move in such a finite way. We don't think long term,
- 42:35We don't think in judging our lives. We judge in
- 42:39the moment and then we judge moments.
- 42:41Speaker 2: Later, you know.
- 42:42Speaker 1: So it's the compassion to me is allow yourself to
- 42:48understand you're just in a moment in a very long story. Yeah,
- 42:52you know, and your story is not written yet, you're
- 42:56just writing part of it right now. And a great
- 42:59story story is never stagnant. Yeah, So, how would your
- 43:03teachers tell you to treat each moment?
- 43:05Speaker 2: Like? How do they say to go about it?
- 43:07Speaker 1: Because the one thing I'm working on is, well, you
- 43:10still have to show up. You still have to show
- 43:12up to every moment. But how do your teachers tell
- 43:13you to show up?
- 43:14Speaker 2: To each moment. How do they tell you to treat
- 43:15it mentally as you go into it.
- 43:17Speaker 3: The biggest mantra that was stated at the start of
- 43:19a moment was don't judge the moment. As soon as
- 43:21you label a moment, it now gets labeled in that
- 43:24jar or that box or that filing cabinet and cupboard,
- 43:28and then now you never reflect on whether that label
- 43:30was right or wrong.
- 43:32Speaker 2: So just be.
- 43:33Speaker 3: So just be because if you label, it's it's the
- 43:35labeling type. The mind wants to label things to make
- 43:37it simpler. That was a good experience, that was a
- 43:39bad experience, that was a good taco, that was a
- 43:42bad taco, That was a good restaurant as a bad restaurant.
- 43:44But as soon as you label it, you now don't
- 43:46allow that to become anything else. What if that restaurant evolves.
- 43:50So the idea of labeling simplifies for the mind, that
- 43:54actually makes the long term complex. So the idea is,
- 43:56instead of labeling, allow yourself to experience, allow yourself to
- 44:01re experience, and then if multiple experiences obviously give you
- 44:05the same experience, then you may put a label in pencil,
- 44:10but you're penciling labeling you're not putting like a permanent model.
- 44:12You know.
- 44:12Speaker 2: It's funny my teacher uses the word be curious.
- 44:15Speaker 3: Yeah exactly.
- 44:16Speaker 2: You know, it's it's not be definitive, yes, you know, be.
- 44:20Speaker 3: Curious, yes exactly.
- 44:22Speaker 1: But I want to play this game with you a
- 44:24little bit. I want to challenge you a little bit.
- 44:25I love it only because I want people listening to
- 44:27your podcast to hear you respond to this stuff, because
- 44:30I think you're brilliant about this. For those people who
- 44:32are listening to this podcast saying, Okay, I get all this,
- 44:34like you know, growth and learning and everything else, but
- 44:37COVID's been hard, and I've I don't have a job
- 44:39right now, and I can't pay my bills, and I've
- 44:42looked up who Scooter Braun is, and this guy financially
- 44:47he's not the same place as me, and he's out
- 44:49of touch and he can talk about all this spiritual learning,
- 44:51but he doesn't.
- 44:52Speaker 2: Know what I'm going through. They're right, they're right. I
- 44:57do not know their experience. I don't know anyone else's
- 45:00and I only know my own.
- 45:02Speaker 1: But what I wanted to ask you is, what is
- 45:04your response to someone who is saying this is easy?
- 45:08Speaker 2: To talk about.
- 45:10Speaker 1: But what about in this capitalistic society that I live in.
- 45:14If I'm doing all this, I think I need to
- 45:17kind of just bury my head in the sand and
- 45:19just work, work, work, work, work. I don't have time
- 45:22for feelings in relationship. I need to get this money,
- 45:25because I've gone on this new app clubhouse many times,
- 45:27and I go into these rooms and I hear everybody
- 45:30talking about I get this money, get this money, How
- 45:32do I get to the top, How do I do this?
- 45:33Speaker 2: How do I do that?
- 45:34Speaker 1: And every time I go in a room, I keep
- 45:36trying to stay the top of the mountain is and
- 45:38what you expect. So I wanted to kind of push
- 45:42you on that, because you have extraordinary people who are
- 45:46living extraordinaryr lives coming on here, and there are a
- 45:49lot of people out there. And I was once in
- 45:52certain positions, but I'm not in that position right now,
- 45:55and I'm sensitive to that, and I'm compassionate to that.
- 45:59What do you tell somebody who says this is all
- 46:02nice and everything, but I don't get I don't have
- 46:04that liberty.
- 46:05Speaker 3: Yeah, So the first thing I'd say is that we
- 46:09all get to choose what our intention right now in life. Is,
- 46:12and if that's the intention that makes you happy and
- 46:14suits you, that's fine. Like I wouldn't even I don't
- 46:18even want to edit it. I don't even want to
- 46:19convince you of anything, because I remember being in a
- 46:24similar position myself not so long back, a few years ago,
- 46:27and I know that I had an intention to make
- 46:29a choice. At the same time, I would say them,
- 46:32if you're open to the idea that there is a better, smarter,
- 46:36more fulfilling way to go about making money, building a business,
- 46:42finding your way to the top, whatever you want to
- 46:44call it, then this is that path. And if you're
- 46:47open to that, then what you're hearing from Scooter. But again,
- 46:50what I loved you said, and you actually made this
- 46:52really clear. There was a mindset You've got to this
- 46:55at the right time for you. Yeah, which I'm remembering
- 46:59because that means that person whoever saying that is going
- 47:01to get to this. I don't know anyone who I
- 47:04meet who doesn't get to this, whether they're a billionaire
- 47:09or whether they just started out. I was lucky enough
- 47:11to get it at eighteen when I met my monk teaches.
- 47:13This is the stuff I was talking about at eighteen
- 47:15years old because that's what I was given in this life.
- 47:18And there are some people that I've met that are
- 47:20taken to seventy to get it. Some people are in
- 47:22their thirties. And the point is that you are going
- 47:24to have to get here at some point. Everyone's going
- 47:27to have to get to this point.
- 47:28Speaker 2: And you need the context from before. Correct, that's what.
- 47:31Speaker 3: Might Just do whatever you do intentionally now that.
- 47:34Speaker 1: My teacher said to me goes, You're exactly where you're
- 47:36supposed to be. And it's you know, Kreta Scott King said,
- 47:39each generation has to fight the fight all over again.
- 47:41Speaker 2: Yes, you know it, all of us.
- 47:44Speaker 1: None of us get out unscathed, and all of us
- 47:46get the blessing of the journey, you know. And I
- 47:49was thinking about, you know this, the teaching we all
- 47:52get in our Judeo Christian society of Adam and Eve,
- 47:55and this idea that we sinned and we were cast out.
- 48:00We were punished, We were punished, we were cast out.
- 48:03We realized we were nude, we were ashamed. That's why
- 48:05we started wearing clothes all this different stuff. And I
- 48:07started thinking about that as a parent, because we're all
- 48:12God's children.
- 48:13Speaker 2: So I was like well, let me rephrase this in
- 48:15my mind. When I give.
- 48:19Speaker 1: My child the consequence or a punishment, I don't do
- 48:22it because I'm mad at them. I do it because
- 48:27I love them and I'm trying to guide them to
- 48:29an important lesson. And I realized that my idea of
- 48:33this idea that the original sin took place was wrong.
- 48:38I believe that all of us, because God loves us
- 48:43and wants us to learn, are given the gift of
- 48:48life and the gift of struggle, and the gift of
- 48:51being cast out so that we can go and get
- 48:54the context we need to appreciate.
- 48:57Speaker 2: The Garden of Eden.
- 48:58Speaker 1: Heaven is spiritual, the enlightenment, and it's been an exciting
- 49:05way to look at things now that everything. That's why
- 49:08I love reading Many Lives, Many Masters, because when I
- 49:11kind of realize that a lot of major religions and
- 49:13in spirituality actually all believe in reincarnation. Kabala talks about reincarnation.
- 49:18A lot of major religions talk about reincarnation in their
- 49:21spirituality practices. And when you read this book, which is
- 49:24a true story, and you kind of understand that if
- 49:28you just kind of accept that, you get to come
- 49:31back and you're always learning. You start to not fear
- 49:34death anymore, and you start to realize this is going
- 49:38to be hard. There are days my heart's going to ache.
- 49:40Their days I'm not going to want. I feel like
- 49:42I can't breathe because I'm hurting. But all of those feelings,
- 49:45all of that is helping us learn things and give
- 49:47us context for greater lessons. And I'm in it and
- 49:53I'm excited, and i know that. The funny part is
- 49:55I've come to terms of the fact of like, I'm
- 49:57not here to have this great life.
- 49:58Speaker 2: I love my life and I'm great.
- 50:00Speaker 1: And I'm like I've told you, you know, I'm gonna
- 50:02keep pouring my glass in other people's glasses. But I
- 50:04think the thing I'm most thrilled about is now I
- 50:06understand that pain is coming, happiness is coming, joy is coming,
- 50:14heartache is coming when I least expect it.
- 50:18Speaker 2: Because the fact that I wake.
- 50:19Speaker 1: Up every morning and I'm still breathing means that there's
- 50:21something else for me to learn.
- 50:23Speaker 2: I gotta take some joy in that. Now.
- 50:24Speaker 3: Yeah, but see this, but what you just said that,
- 50:28when you just said at the end that last day,
- 50:29when you said, but I take joy in that now
- 50:31that was This sounds intense, but it's actually beautiful. And
- 50:38that's where the joy pod comes in. So when we
- 50:40were trained, the scripture would say that life is about education,
- 50:46not enjoyment. Like life's about enlightenment not enjoyment. Now, what
- 50:51I mean by that is the joy of learning is
- 50:56the joy of life. But we are seeking enjoyment through
- 51:00the temporary pleasure, through the external satisfaction, through the quick wind,
- 51:04through the top, through the mountain, whatever it may be.
- 51:07And as soon as you switch that so every area
- 51:10you walk in, if you walked into every room today
- 51:12and you went in there and said, how can I
- 51:14learn from it? And how can I serve in it?
- 51:16Versus how can I enjoy this moment? I love that
- 51:20that's the difference. I love that we walk into every
- 51:22room going how can I enjoy this? You see a
- 51:24woman or a man? You how can I enjoy them?
- 51:26You see a house? How can I enjoy this?
- 51:28Speaker 1: You know, it's funny, I'm thinking of myself, where's the struggle.
- 51:30The struggle is when I haven't learned the lesson from
- 51:32the last room, and I'm still stuck on that lesson,
- 51:34And I got to walk into the next room, and
- 51:37that's where you start to get into a vicious cycle.
- 51:39And you know, it's like you start to falter, give
- 51:41yourself that grace of, hey, let's go down, let's take
- 51:44that big deep breath, let's reset. It's why, you know,
- 51:47when you went on on that trip together, you guys
- 51:49were waking up every morning and meditating. And I was like, oh,
- 51:51I've learned TM that I now meditate every morning and
- 51:55it has changed my life. And you know what, let
- 51:59me rephrase that. I try to meditate every more. There
- 52:02are days that I miss and now I give myself
- 52:04the grace of I'll get back on it tomorrow, or
- 52:06maybe I'll do a quick one tonight.
- 52:08Speaker 2: You know, I'm not oh, I meditate every day. You know,
- 52:12it's I.
- 52:14Speaker 1: Enjoy meditating. I like what it does for me. And
- 52:16if I miss one, I give myself that grace and
- 52:18I get back on them, you know, horse tomorrow.
- 52:21Speaker 3: But that's what I mean that the joy. Like people go, well,
- 52:24then where's the fun in life? I'm always learning? Where's
- 52:26the fun? The learning is the fun part? Like when
- 52:29you come into a new place and like your teacher said,
- 52:31you're curious. Like when you came in here, you were
- 52:33like looking at the quotes to the people. You don't
- 52:36try to enjoy the art, You're like curious and you
- 52:39want to learn that is the fun of a childlike
- 52:41as childlike exactly where a childish mentality is to enjoy.
- 52:46Speaker 1: Well, you know, it's funny as I started diving into
- 52:49all the different major religions, there's a quote in almost
- 52:51every major religion that talks about God. If you like,
- 52:54they ask Jesus, they say, show me, you know, show
- 52:57me God, and he says, look at the child.
- 52:59Speaker 2: And they say it. And Hindu they say it.
- 53:01Speaker 1: Like all these different every religion, you'll find something that
- 53:04points to the child and the innocence of the child
- 53:06and the love the child has. And you know, for me,
- 53:11I talked to someone who actually went to Hoffmann after me,
- 53:15and you know, this person hit me up and they
- 53:18were like, I'm losing the high.
- 53:21Speaker 2: Life is pulling me back in. I'm getting depressed.
- 53:23Speaker 1: I'm losing the high that I had three weeks ago
- 53:25when I got out.
- 53:26Speaker 2: How do I get it back?
- 53:27Speaker 1: And I said, I don't know if I'm right, but
- 53:30I'll try and answer this question. And the way I'm
- 53:33gonna answer it I don't know if you're gonna Like
- 53:36I said, you got a high because you dealt with
- 53:41your worst demons and then you gave yourself forgiveness and
- 53:46you learned. If you want to get that high again,
- 53:51stop looking for the happiness, look for the resistance, look
- 53:55for the lessons and the resistance, and when you have
- 53:57the epiphany again, you'll get that high back.
- 54:00Speaker 3: That's exactly point I'm making is that we're looking for
- 54:02the high in life constantly. We're looking for the enjoyment.
- 54:05We're looking for that release, that fun moment. But you
- 54:11got that experience from the work. Yeah, right, And that's
- 54:14such a beautiful way of looking at it. Tell me
- 54:16about some of the projects that you're working on right
- 54:18now that excite you the most, that you feel like
- 54:22allowing you to love most. Some of these could be
- 54:24SB Project's media work, but it also can be some
- 54:26of the philanthropy work that you're doing that behind the scenes,
- 54:29some of the work that you feel so excited and
- 54:31proud of. Because I also want to give you an opportunity,
- 54:33as I want everyone who's listening to have the opportunity
- 54:35to celebrate the stuff that they're excited about, because again,
- 54:38you'll dim your own light. So I'm going to ask
- 54:40you to drag about what you're doing.
- 54:43Speaker 1: No, I appreciate that, but it's weird because of where
- 54:46I am right now, service based, yeah, but even service based,
- 54:50I mean I am having the most joy out of
- 54:55watching people that I supported have their own win. Weirdly,
- 55:02that is my biggest joy right now. Watching Justin Bieber
- 55:06take ownership of this album, the way he has ownership
- 55:10of the performances, the way he has ownership of his
- 55:15decision making, the way he has this is the most
- 55:19hands on he's ever been in his career. This is
- 55:24the most he's fought to push back on all of
- 55:28us to say I got this. And I told the
- 55:31other day proud is not the word. I respect it.
- 55:35I respect it so much. I'm so happy to see
- 55:41where Arianna is in her personal life, in her decision making,
- 55:44in her choosing to face so much trauma she's been
- 55:50through publicly and be the person that she is. I'm
- 55:56grateful watching this Demi documentary like I'm blown away by her.
- 56:00You know I am, you know I am. Andrew Watt
- 56:04just one producer of the year, I know the year
- 56:06and a half that he's had and for him to
- 56:10come out the other side and then tell me the
- 56:13Grammy was amazing. But the work I'm doing on myself
- 56:15has been the greatest reward. I mean, I'm really proud
- 56:20of a lot of people in my professional life, and
- 56:23then I'm really proud of the people in my personal
- 56:26life because I'm seeing them do the same thing. So
- 56:29it's weird, like the accolades for me aren't necessarily the
- 56:35fact that I'm moving the chess pieces. I did that
- 56:37for a really long time. It's that I'm seeing all
- 56:41these other people who've been around me in my life
- 56:42and I'm looking over at their chessboard and I'm admiring
- 56:45their game, you know. I'm admiring their game, and I'm
- 56:50admiring who they are, and I'm admiring who they're showing
- 56:54up to be, and I'm just admiring their journey. And
- 56:58I'm not passing judgment. I'm just enjoying watching. I'm curious,
- 57:02you know. And to me, the funny thing is, in
- 57:07the last six months since I've let go more commercially,
- 57:13i think I've had more success than I've ever had
- 57:15in my life because I'm trusting and I think there's
- 57:20a weird reward in trusting the universe because I'm finding
- 57:25that joy and things have not been easy at times,
- 57:32but I'm leaning into those uneasy times and saying, what
- 57:35is this resistance?
- 57:37Speaker 2: Like? Why am I hurting?
- 57:38Speaker 1: What does that really mean? What is there for me
- 57:41to learn there? And I'm doing that as often as
- 57:43I possibly can. That's what I'm celebrating. That's what I'm
- 57:46excited about. I'm getting to a deeper place, and I'm
- 57:49hoping that my friends like you hold me accountable in
- 57:53six months when I start getting out of that and
- 57:57remind me of this and say, are you you and
- 58:00your meditations have a little you know self compassion that
- 58:03you've missed a bunch.
- 58:04Speaker 3: Now you're giving me permission to do that.
- 58:05Speaker 1: Yeah, I want that because I think that's what friends
- 58:07are for, right, if you give them permission.
- 58:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I give you.
- 58:10Speaker 1: Full permission to keep me accountable, to make me continue
- 58:13to learn the same way I said to my wife,
- 58:15tell me to get back in my heart, you know,
- 58:17like and and I think we all should be that
- 58:22for each other, but not in a judgmental way.
- 58:24Speaker 3: Yeah, I'll probably reach out and say let's meditate together. Yeah, sure,
- 58:27that's what I'll do, so I'm accountable too. Yeah, because yeah,
- 58:29it's I.
- 58:31Speaker 1: Like I said, I've always been grateful for our friendship.
- 58:35I've been grateful knowing that I have a friend who's
- 58:37as spiritual as you are and enjoys the conversations of
- 58:40spirituality because it allows you push me and you inspire me,
- 58:47and I'm grateful for this friendship.
- 58:49Speaker 3: Well you're the same man. I feel like the way
- 58:51you've opened up today, and this is what i'd like.
- 58:54This is what I try and do on this podcast.
- 58:56Everyone who's been listening to watching, For me, I like
- 59:00learning about the full human. So when I sit down
- 59:02with someone, I'm not seeing them as an athlete or
- 59:06a manager, or an artist, or I'm seeing you as
- 59:11a complete spiritual being. And I want to hear that story.
- 59:16So when you're listening to this, whoever's listening to watching,
- 59:19listen to that story with every one of our episodes,
- 59:22and this one included as well, because it's so easy
- 59:25to listen to interviews these days, and people pick out
- 59:28the one little thing and then that becomes the meme
- 59:32and the whatever it is, and it's like, but you
- 59:34miss the point of the whole conversation. Like again, what
- 59:37we've been encouraging for our own selves as well, just is,
- 59:40if you don't give someone else the permission to have context,
- 59:44we are blocking ourselves from having context of our own self. Yeah,
- 59:48and that's the biggest thing I've learned from today hearing
- 59:50you say it, which reaffirms my belief of the understanding
- 59:53that if you're not giving someone a chance to explain, express,
- 59:58be curious, make mistakes, then you're basically blocking yourself from
- 1:00:02doing the same thing.
- 1:00:03Speaker 2: I agreed.
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: And the more permission you give everyone to do that.
- 1:00:06Speaker 2: The more you give you permission to say, what was
- 1:00:08my role?
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: Yeah? I love that what was my role is?
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: Because I think that's where it starts.
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: If you can forgive yourself for something you might not
- 1:00:15even recognize, then it's much easier. You asked me what
- 1:00:19happened earlier, and I was thinking about that just now,
- 1:00:22like you know, is there a specific thing that happened?
- 1:00:25You know what happened my wife, Yale and my children.
- 1:00:29I learned I love somebody more than me, and loving
- 1:00:34them made me go do the work. So what happened
- 1:00:38is they were the greatest gift in my life and
- 1:00:42for that, I'm internally grateful. And I want each of
- 1:00:45them to have their own individual process and their own
- 1:00:47individual journey, you know.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: And I want them to know that I love them.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: And they're messy, you know, and and and I'm just
- 1:00:58grateful for them.
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: That's it.
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: I love that, man, and I'm so grateful to you.
- 1:01:03I want to say it back to you because you know,
- 1:01:05when I've gone through my tough times, you really get
- 1:01:08to see whose shows up for you, especially when they're
- 1:01:12a newer friend or someone you're just getting to know,
- 1:01:15and when you've stuck by me and supported me, not
- 1:01:18in a we've never had a relationship. It's not just
- 1:01:21like oh yeah, yeah, we're boys. Like it's not like that.
- 1:01:24It's let's look in the mirror. What work have you
- 1:01:27got to do? What do you need to work on?
- 1:01:29What where are you? What is your role in this?
- 1:01:32Like that friendship I think is so special, and then
- 1:01:34feeling support from that again, loving your friends through growth,
- 1:01:38loving yourself through growth, making sure that you know you
- 1:01:41need to change, but you love someone through that change. Scooter.
- 1:01:45We end every interview with the final five, which are
- 1:01:47the rapid fire fast five questions. So you have to
- 1:01:50answer in one word or one sentence maximum. I am
- 1:01:53judging you on you if you talk to you, and
- 1:01:55I will ask I will ask you to expand when
- 1:01:58I get intrigued. All right, So starting with your first question,
- 1:02:02you're ready, all right? The first question is what's the
- 1:02:04best advice you've ever received?
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: David Geffen told me that. Well, first, it's loved more.
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: But really what comes to my a is David Geffen
- 1:02:14told me that in a hundred if you don't know
- 1:02:15who he is, look him up. He said, in a
- 1:02:17hundred years, no one's going to remember me, so they
- 1:02:19sure as hell won't remember.
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: You don't have an ego. And really I loved it.
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: That is great piece of advice. All right. Second question,
- 1:02:25what's the worst piece of advice you've ever received?
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: I think as a kid, you're told it's your fault
- 1:02:30and you start to believe, Oh, I'm a bad kid.
- 1:02:32I deserve that, And I think that was the wrong advice.
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: Beautiful man.
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: All right. Number three, something that you are pretty sure
- 1:02:42and confident about, but other people don't quite wrap their
- 1:02:44head around yet.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: That bitcoin will eventually be worth five hundred thousand.
- 1:02:51Speaker 3: Oh do you think he's going.
- 1:02:53Speaker 2: To I think long term.
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: Yes, I believe in bitcoin long term, and there's a
- 1:02:57lot of people who don't believe in it.
- 1:02:59Speaker 2: But I believe in bitcoin long term.
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: Okay, all right, Well we didn't even talk about that
- 1:03:03bitcoin followers, which I don't think I have a lot of,
- 1:03:06so we'll figure it out, all right.
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: We could talk any business, which is a lot of
- 1:03:10fun for me. Yeah, we didn't talk any business.
- 1:03:12Speaker 3: Because that's not my thing.
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: Also, and also, look, you know this, ninety percent of
- 1:03:16what I do in business people don't even know, which
- 1:03:17is the way I like it, so let's keep going.
- 1:03:20Speaker 3: Well, No, for me, it was just the reason why
- 1:03:23we didn't talk about business is because when I started
- 1:03:26the podcast, it was all about what can I talk
- 1:03:28to people about that no one else can do.
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: It's also you and I don't have that relationship, no
- 1:03:32should we. Yeah, we have a real relationship. It's not
- 1:03:34about business. It's about the person in front of you totally.
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: And also, just like you, you're prolific. You can talk
- 1:03:40about so many different things in so many different places.
- 1:03:42But this we're going to talk about it. Like you know,
- 1:03:44this is also.
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: Fun for me because you have treated me the way
- 1:03:49I actually want to treat myself like I told you
- 1:03:50about the chessboard, of raising my head up and saying hi,
- 1:03:53nice to meet you.
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: I'm good at this.
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: And I remember one time you called me and you said, hey,
- 1:03:56I don't want to overask, but like we're friends, and
- 1:04:01you know, I'm trying to think about investing if you
- 1:04:02have any advice ever, And that was great because I
- 1:04:05love that. I want to be able to help a
- 1:04:07friend and if I'm good at something, I want to
- 1:04:09be able to offer that. But you've always looked across
- 1:04:11the table and said Hi, I'm Jay, Hi Scott, Scooter,
- 1:04:14you know, nice to meet you, Like let's be friends.
- 1:04:16And that's why I love this conversation. But sorry, go
- 1:04:18back to rap fire.
- 1:04:20Speaker 3: No, no, no too, Yeah this is the worst rapid fire. Yeah. Good,
- 1:04:24All right, last two questions four and five. Oh now
- 1:04:29now I'm like, I've got two questions left for you.
- 1:04:31What do I ask you? I know what the fifth
- 1:04:32one is.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: You're gonna have three more because I've done a poor
- 1:04:35job with the other one.
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: No, no, if you can go good, No, you're back to
- 1:04:37give them beautiful answers. I we got distracted of the
- 1:04:40last one. Number four, something you once chased and no longer.
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: Care about recognition.
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: And fifth and final question, if you could create one
- 1:04:49law that everyone in the world had to follow, what
- 1:04:52would it be? Love more beautiful Scooter brun Thank you man,
- 1:04:57Thank you so special. This is this goes down as
- 1:05:00one of the most beautiful open conversations.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: Well let's end it, right, Scott, Scooter Bronx. Now you
- 1:05:05know all of me, buddy.
- 1:05:06Speaker 3: So now I call you Scott from now.
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: Tell me Scott Scooter whatever we want. But now it's yeah,
- 1:05:11all of me is here. I got to tell you,
- 1:05:15I'm so grateful we did this, and I'm so grateful
- 1:05:17for your friendship, and I'm just proud of you as
- 1:05:20a friend for the message you delivered to the world.
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: Thank you man. And I'm proud of you for having
- 1:05:24the courage to always be open and vulnerable and honest
- 1:05:27and live your truth and for doing the work when
- 1:05:31externally you don't need to. You know, that's the hardest part,
- 1:05:34when actually, like you said, you could convince yourself to
- 1:05:37not do the work because things.
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: Are good or if we're breathing, it means we got
- 1:05:41work to do. Absolutely, Thank you man, Thank you, thank
- 1:05:44you so everybody.
- 1:05:45Speaker 3: That's awesome. Man. If you want even more videos just
