- 0:03Speaker 1: in Massachusetts. An MS thirteen gang member from Al Salvador
- 0:07Speaker 1: accused of murdering a Texas man of Venezuelan charged with
- 0:11Speaker 1: filming and selling child pornography in Michigan. These are just
- 0:15Speaker 1: some of the heinous migrant criminals caught because of President
- 0:19Speaker 1: Donald J. Trump's leadership. I'm Christy nom the United States
- 0:23Speaker 1: Secretary of Homeland Security. Under President Trump, attempted illegal border
- 0:28Speaker 1: crossings are at the lowest levels ever recorded, and over

- 0:39Speaker 1: one thousand dollars a day, imprisoned, and deported. You will

- 1:08Speaker 4: When people all around the world first started going out
- 1:10Speaker 4: protesting this summer, you'd hear it over and over.
- 1:13Speaker 3: This time is different.
- 1:15Speaker 4: But how and who are the people trying to make
- 1:18Speaker 4: it different and Gimlet's new podcast, Resistance Posts SAYI T.
- 1:22Speaker 3: John Thomas Jr.
- 1:23Speaker 4: Brings us stories from the front lines of the movement
- 1:25Speaker 4: for Black lives, told by the generation fighting for the change.
- 1:29Speaker 4: It's a show about people refusing to accept things as
- 1:31Speaker 4: they are and how we can make sure this time
- 1:33Speaker 4: really is different. Resistance is out now, follow and listen
- 1:37Speaker 4: for free on Spotify.
- 1:44Speaker 5: My graduates from my school being forced back.
- 1:48Speaker 6: Drop Mike drop backdrop.
- 2:03Speaker 7: So I'm gonna jump right into it.
- 2:04Speaker 8: We got an extremely special guest today once again, somebody
- 2:09Speaker 8: that so we if you listen to the podcast, you know,
- 2:11Speaker 8: we interviewed Al Harrington, right, and Al Harrington was somebody.
- 2:14Speaker 7: That we wrote a post about.
- 2:17Speaker 8: Yeah, and then from that post, he you know, engaged
- 2:21Speaker 8: with us and then we we we reached out to
- 2:24Speaker 8: him and we went to LA and we actually had
- 2:26Speaker 8: a conversation with him right on the podcast. So once again,
- 2:30Speaker 8: similar situation, right, you want to.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Get the backstort in this the power?
- 2:34Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, so this is this is the you know, uh,
- 2:37Speaker 4: standard procedure for us is like I'll read articles at
- 2:40Speaker 4: five thirty in the morning. I think we spoke about
- 2:42Speaker 4: that on when we were with Q and I'll go
- 2:44Speaker 4: through articles and I'll find, you know, things that are
- 2:46Speaker 4: very interesting and I think would relate on our page.
- 2:49Speaker 4: And I came across this article about Brandon Copeland and
- 2:52Speaker 4: I'm like, wait, wow, this guy's amazing. And literally as
- 2:56Speaker 4: I'm reading it, there's a special on Sports Center and
- 2:59Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, no, no, no, this guy is on
- 3:02Speaker 4: the same path as us.
- 3:03Speaker 3: We have to meet this guy. We have to talk
- 3:04Speaker 3: to this guy.
- 3:05Speaker 4: And said it to you like five thirty in the morning.
- 3:07Speaker 4: I know you're sleeping, but I'm like, he has to
- 3:09Speaker 4: see this. And as soon as you woke up, you
- 3:10Speaker 4: put the post up and the traction was crazy.
- 3:14Speaker 8: Yeah, it was one of our biggest posts. So Brandon
- 3:16Speaker 8: Copan if you're not familiar, he he plays for the Jets,
- 3:19Speaker 8: but that's that's the only part of his story. He
- 3:22Speaker 8: is a u pin graduate. If anybody's not familiar, UPenn
- 3:26Speaker 8: has one of the best business business schools in the world,
- 3:28Speaker 8: the Wharton School of Business. So that's you know, separates
- 3:32Speaker 8: him from a lot of NFL players. But also he
- 3:36Speaker 8: works on Wall Street during the off season. He has
- 3:38Speaker 8: a real estate investment company and he actually is a
- 3:42Speaker 8: college professor at Warton. So when I was reading his story,
- 3:46Speaker 8: I'm like, this is crazy, Like you know what I mean,
- 3:48Speaker 8: Like we highlight the bad things with you know, people
- 3:51Speaker 8: make mistakes in any realm, but it seems like athletes
- 3:54Speaker 8: always get highlighted the most, right anytime that this is
- 3:56Speaker 8: domestic violence, anything like that happens. So it's like we
- 3:58Speaker 8: need to highlight this like this this is just a
- 4:01Speaker 8: dope story. So I put the story out and once
- 4:05Speaker 8: again I put in the story.
- 4:06Speaker 7: I'm like, y'all would love to connect with you, and
- 4:09Speaker 7: he was like, yeah, let's connect. So I was like what.
- 4:13Speaker 8: So I shot with DM and we worked it out
- 4:16Speaker 8: via you know, emails, and now we hate on our podcast. So,
- 4:20Speaker 8: like you said, power social media, social media. So, first
- 4:24Speaker 8: of almost thank you, thank you, pleasure to be here,
- 4:27Speaker 8: pleasure to be with y'all. I love what y'all are doing.
- 4:29Speaker 7: Man, thank you. We're gonna jump right into it.
- 4:32Speaker 8: So all right, So the theme of our show is
- 4:35Speaker 8: the backstory the financial side of sports entertainment business as well.
- 4:39Speaker 8: But we we really focus on sports entertainment a lot
- 4:41Speaker 8: because we feel like, especially in our culture, people don't
- 4:44Speaker 8: fully understand what goes on behind the scenes, right, Like
- 4:47Speaker 8: everybody wants to be in the NBA, NFL or sell
- 4:50Speaker 8: a million records, but they don't understand that these are businesses, right,
- 4:55Speaker 8: It's sports business, the music business, entertainment business.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Right, that part gets left off the title.
- 5:00Speaker 7: It always does. It always does, it always does.
- 5:02Speaker 8: So you have a very interesting story, and we was
- 5:07Speaker 8: reading it, you know, the last couple of days. So
- 5:10Speaker 8: you said your first contract, correct me if I'm wrong,
- 5:12Speaker 8: you made your contract was from one point two million.
- 5:14Speaker 5: Yeah, I was good.
- 5:17Speaker 8: Now you have like thirty five forty thousand, yeah, So yeah,
- 5:20Speaker 8: can we just kind of break that down because to me,
- 5:22Speaker 8: it's interesting as far as like NFL players because you
- 5:25Speaker 8: have an off season, so a lot of people don't
- 5:27Speaker 8: aren't familiar like do you get paid on the off
- 5:29Speaker 8: season or how frequent do you get paid? And then
- 5:31Speaker 8: there's a thing called the jock tax when you go
- 5:33Speaker 8: to different states and you get taxed differently.
- 5:37Speaker 7: It's not all guaranteed, so yeah, can you kind of
- 5:39Speaker 7: just break that down?
- 5:40Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 5:40Speaker 6: Man, it's layers to that, layers. So yeah. So the
- 5:45Speaker 6: way I think of the NFL is nothing is guaranteed
- 5:50Speaker 6: unless you have certain stipulations within your contract and all that.
- 5:55Speaker 5: Type of stuff.
- 5:55Speaker 6: Right, So if you're one of those players, which is
- 5:58Speaker 6: you know, more players are seeing that.
- 6:00Speaker 5: That's a great thing and a blessing to have.
- 6:02Speaker 6: But when you see these big contracts, you know, Russell
- 6:05Speaker 6: Wilson one hundred and forty million, I can't remember how
- 6:08Speaker 6: much guaranteed, maybe sixty five something sixty quaranteed, right, that's
- 6:13Speaker 6: what he can bank on, right, you see the big number.
- 6:17Speaker 6: But if Russell Wilson gets hurt in year four, year five, whatever, right,
- 6:23Speaker 6: he's not seeing the rest of that money potentially. So
- 6:28Speaker 6: that's different from basketball. That's different from baseball and other sports.
- 6:34Speaker 6: So as I entered the league in twenty thirteen, I
- 6:40Speaker 6: was undrafted out of University of Pennsylvania.
- 6:43Speaker 5: I remember the Baltimore Ravens called me my hometown team.
- 6:48Speaker 6: I'm like, man, Actually, to be quite honest with you,
- 6:51Speaker 6: I was pissed off, right, Not because I was pissed
- 6:53Speaker 6: off that I didn't get drafted. That was really what
- 6:56Speaker 6: it was, right, and it just had a big chip
- 6:57Speaker 6: on my shoulder. So for me, I've been fortunate to
- 7:00Speaker 6: just have this lens on life and perspective where I'm
- 7:03Speaker 6: not really a fan of too much or anyone. So
- 7:08Speaker 6: I remember, as a rookie enter in the locker room
- 7:12Speaker 6: and this is my hometown team. These are the guys
- 7:16Speaker 6: I looked up to growing up, and I remember this.
- 7:19Speaker 5: Is fresh off of Super Bowl, fresh off of Super Bowl.
- 7:21Speaker 6: I remember, actually, you know what, the perfect story that
- 7:24Speaker 6: might describe me as my agent at the time, he
- 7:28Speaker 6: took us out right before the draft, took us out
- 7:33Speaker 6: in New York to some club up there to just
- 7:37Speaker 6: celebrate that night before the draft of like all the
- 7:40Speaker 6: work you put in and all that type of stuff.
- 7:42Speaker 6: And I remember, you know, like I said, I grew
- 7:44Speaker 6: up in Baltimore, that purple and black, you know. I
- 7:47Speaker 6: remember being in the house and seeing them, you know,
- 7:51Speaker 6: win the Super Bowl and bragging all my roommates and
- 7:53Speaker 6: all that type of stuff.
- 7:54Speaker 5: Wearing that with pride and in the club.
- 7:59Speaker 6: That from me was like my introduction to the NFL,
- 8:02Speaker 6: even though I wasn't even in it at the time.
- 8:05Speaker 6: But you had all of these different That was when
- 8:09Speaker 6: the draft was still in New York, so you had
- 8:10Speaker 6: all these different rappers and in different sections.
- 8:13Speaker 5: My agent had gotten us a section. I wasn't spending.
- 8:16Speaker 6: Anymore at a section and the other guys there where
- 8:20Speaker 6: you had Adrian Peterson with a section, Ludacris across the
- 8:23Speaker 6: way g Z, and there was ray Rice and I
- 8:27Speaker 6: remember Ray Rice walked up and I remember speaking to
- 8:33Speaker 6: him and I'm like, yo, I just want to say,
- 8:36Speaker 6: you know, you really put on for the city.
- 8:38Speaker 5: That was amazing what y'all did.
- 8:40Speaker 6: Man, Like, I appreciate you, respect you. But a couple
- 8:44Speaker 6: of days like I'm gonna be in the NFL.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Too, So.
- 8:48Speaker 6: Ain't none of that fans stuff in the war, right,
- 8:50Speaker 6: like we competition right, But before that, I want to
- 8:55Speaker 6: tell you how much I respect you. So anyway, I
- 8:57Speaker 6: say all that to say a few days later, get
- 9:01Speaker 6: the call go to the Ravens. Had that chip on
- 9:03Speaker 6: my shoulder. But the weird thing about the NFL is,
- 9:06Speaker 6: like I said, I keep it. I've been blessed to
- 9:08Speaker 6: be able to keep things in the perspective and understand that.
- 9:11Speaker 5: Okay, I just got this call that says, hey, you
- 9:15Speaker 5: get a chance to sign up and you're a Baltimore Raven.
- 9:19Speaker 6: Now no, I'm not right, Like there's still another step
- 9:22Speaker 6: to actually make the fifty three or to make a
- 9:25Speaker 6: practice squad whatever. Right, Sadly, there's a lot of guys
- 9:28Speaker 6: who are like, oh, I'm in it. No, right, like
- 9:31Speaker 6: next week you might be cut or after this rookie
- 9:33Speaker 6: mini camp you might be cut.
- 9:34Speaker 5: Right.
- 9:34Speaker 6: So at that time, again, like I said, I signed
- 9:37Speaker 6: a three year, one point two million dollar deal.
- 9:41Speaker 5: However I got cut going into the.
- 9:46Speaker 6: Actual season, made it all through preseason and all that stuff,
- 9:49Speaker 6: got cut going into the actual season, and that jumped
- 9:51Speaker 6: my money down to a practice squad guy. After four weeks,
- 9:54Speaker 6: I got cut from Baltimore, So I really got four
- 9:58Speaker 6: weeks of pay. And then again, I mean there were
- 10:01Speaker 6: guys who got cut in the middle of training camp.
- 10:04Speaker 6: There's guys who got cut after three days.
- 10:06Speaker 4: So that there's a process after you get drafted, right,
- 10:09Speaker 4: because that's even a little confusing, right, there's OTAs that
- 10:12Speaker 4: you have to make ye. Then there is training camp
- 10:15Speaker 4: that you have to make the team. Then you got
- 10:17Speaker 4: four pre preseason game yeah, and so trying to make
- 10:20Speaker 4: the team.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Right.
- 10:21Speaker 5: So the way I would think of it is you're
- 10:26Speaker 5: never really on the team. You know, depending on who
- 10:28Speaker 5: you are, you're never really on the team.
- 10:30Speaker 6: Like I even joke with my students this semester, and
- 10:33Speaker 6: even right right now, like I could get this phone
- 10:35Speaker 6: go start ringing nigga call, but like listen code, like
- 10:38Speaker 6: did you bring your iPad up here? Like we're going
- 10:40Speaker 6: in a different route, right, And that's just the nature
- 10:42Speaker 6: of the beast. So, like you said, every single day,
- 10:45Speaker 6: I mean they always say that every day is an interview,
- 10:48Speaker 6: but like literally, like I think people don't understand that. Again,
- 10:55Speaker 6: depending on who you are, right your first round, second round,
- 10:57Speaker 6: you probably are guaranteed that first year, right, But that
- 11:00Speaker 6: doesn't mean you're guaranteed three years from now, four years
- 11:03Speaker 6: from now, right, And that's you. You just hope and
- 11:07Speaker 6: pray that young guys come in and understand that. And me,
- 11:12Speaker 6: fortunately I understood it. It was what motivated me to
- 11:17Speaker 6: want to be great and make the team and still
- 11:21Speaker 6: be here seven years later.
- 11:22Speaker 4: Right.
- 11:22Speaker 6: But for a lot of guys, like I remember rookie years,
- 11:26Speaker 6: some guys would go to this mall across the street
- 11:29Speaker 6: from our.
- 11:30Speaker 5: Hotel and I remember getting on Snapchat.
- 11:32Speaker 6: Snap was like big at the time, and getting on
- 11:37Speaker 6: there and they literally walking in there selfie videos.
- 11:41Speaker 5: Stunting like we're about to census sage. And I'm like, bro,
- 11:43Speaker 5: y'all all making the same thing. I'm making right now,
- 11:45Speaker 5: which is like like maybe one hundred and fifty bucks, right.
- 11:50Speaker 8: So you had a one point two million dollar contract. Yeah,
- 11:53Speaker 8: but then you four weeks in you got demoted to
- 11:56Speaker 8: practice team right.
- 11:58Speaker 6: Now, so so you get drafted or undrafted in the spring.
- 12:03Speaker 6: So like our rookies just showed up this weekend. So
- 12:07Speaker 6: where we may whatever we are right now, we train, train, training,
- 12:12Speaker 6: you can be there's guys being cut, there's guys being signed.
- 12:14Speaker 6: That entire time, like that roster is fluctuating. And then
- 12:17Speaker 6: by the time you get the training camp. You start
- 12:19Speaker 6: training camp in late July with ninety guys on the roster,
- 12:24Speaker 6: that roster fluctuates a bit, and then by the end
- 12:29Speaker 6: of August beginning of September, that roster cuts down to
- 12:32Speaker 6: fifty three. And then on top of that fifty three
- 12:35Speaker 6: you have ten practice squad guys. I made it from
- 12:37Speaker 6: that May all the way through to August. I got cut,
- 12:42Speaker 6: became one of those practice squad guys where your salary
- 12:44Speaker 6: goes from a minimum of like four hundred thirty thousand
- 12:48Speaker 6: to one hundred thousand, and then four weeks later, four
- 12:53Speaker 6: weeks into the season, that's when I got.
- 12:55Speaker 5: Released from the team.
- 12:57Speaker 3: That's in Baltimore.
- 12:58Speaker 5: That's in Baltimore.
- 12:59Speaker 7: So none of that point two million was guaranteed, none
- 13:02Speaker 7: of it, not even none.
- 13:03Speaker 3: I wish it looks good on paper.
- 13:04Speaker 5: Though it looks good, it sounds good.
- 13:06Speaker 6: So it's also that that's the problem, that that that
- 13:10Speaker 6: you see that headline and then the vultures come getting right.
- 13:14Speaker 4: Family everybody because now it's like on paper it looks
- 13:17Speaker 4: he's a millionaire.
- 13:18Speaker 8: Yeah, but that's interesting. I think people don't fully understand that,
- 13:22Speaker 8: Like I can't drive that home. Right, you got a
- 13:24Speaker 8: one point two million dollar contract. None of it was guaranteed.
- 13:27Speaker 8: You probably netted.
- 13:28Speaker 6: How much you net probably probably like thirty Maybe that's
- 13:32Speaker 6: how much you made from the Baltimore Ravens. Probably like
- 13:34Speaker 6: thirty because in the spring I made money in the spring,
- 13:38Speaker 6: So like right now you might be making what maybe.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Earners? What's up?
- 13:43Speaker 4: You ever walk into a small business and everything just works,

- 14:53Speaker 4: A lot of people think podcasts about work are boring,
- 14:56Speaker 4: and sure they definitely can be, but understanding of a

- 15:03Speaker 4: by little, day after day. It's like banking with P

- 15:32Speaker 1: An illegal alien from Guatemala charged with raping a child
- 15:36Speaker 1: in Massachusetts. An MS thirteen gang member from Al Salvador
- 15:40Speaker 1: accused of murdering a Texas man of Venezuelan charged with
- 15:44Speaker 1: filming and selling child pornography in Michigan. These are just
- 15:48Speaker 1: some of the heinous migrant criminals caught because of President
- 15:52Speaker 1: Donald J. Trump's leadership. I'm Christy Noman, the United States
- 15:56Speaker 1: Secretary of Homeland Security. Under President Trump did illegal border
- 16:01Speaker 1: crossings are at the lowest levels ever recorded, and over
- 16:04Speaker 1: one hundred thousand illegal aliens have been arrested. If you
- 16:07Speaker 1: are here illegally, your next you will be fine nearly
- 16:11Speaker 1: one thousand dollars a day, imprisoned and deported, you will
- 16:15Speaker 1: never return. But if you register using our CBP home
- 16:19Speaker 1: app and leave now, you could be allowed to return legally.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Do what's right. Leave now. Under President Trump America's laws
- 16:28Speaker 1: border and families will.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Be protected sponsored by the United States Department of Homeland Security.
- 16:32Speaker 6: A couple hundred a week because they take your hotel
- 16:36Speaker 6: and stuff. If that's the team doesn't cover it, they
- 16:39Speaker 6: cover it, but it's.
- 16:42Speaker 5: Wow, cover it wow.
- 16:44Speaker 6: You just don't know, you know, you don't really have
- 16:48Speaker 6: a yeah anyway, so you can make it maybe a
- 16:51Speaker 6: few hundred a week, and they cover your meals and
- 16:53Speaker 6: all that stuff on the weekend, so you don't really
- 16:55Speaker 6: have too many expenses. But then as you get to preseason,
- 17:00Speaker 6: now you're making I want to say, seven hundred a
- 17:02Speaker 6: week before taxes, so you know, and that's what maybe
- 17:10Speaker 6: five to six weeks, so you really like four you know,
- 17:14Speaker 6: who knows what that is? Four hundred a week after
- 17:16Speaker 6: all dollars done.
- 17:17Speaker 5: Dollars yeah, dollars yeah. And then once the season hits.
- 17:24Speaker 6: As a practice squad guy, I was making, I was
- 17:28Speaker 6: seeing about four k after taxes.
- 17:30Speaker 5: I think my check was like.
- 17:31Speaker 6: Seven thousand, seventy five hundred per week before, so about
- 17:36Speaker 6: four thousand after and les I did that for four weeks,
- 17:41Speaker 6: so that's about sixteen right there.
- 17:43Speaker 5: So I probably made a little less than thirty from
- 17:45Speaker 5: the Baltimore Ravens, and then two weeks later I got
- 17:49Speaker 5: cut week four.
- 17:49Speaker 6: Two weeks later, I got picked up by the Tennessee
- 17:51Speaker 6: Titans practice squad with them for a bunch of weeks.
- 17:55Speaker 6: I got cut by them. A lot of people don't
- 17:57Speaker 6: know this too. It's like in my fan only they understand.
- 18:02Speaker 6: And it's so funny that so at Tuesday at four
- 18:06Speaker 6: pm Eastern is when your money is guaranteed for the week.
- 18:09Speaker 6: So for me and the way that my career has been,
- 18:12Speaker 6: and I'm not superstitious, but I just I have certain things.
- 18:17Speaker 5: I have my routine. My family knew.
- 18:20Speaker 6: Don't call me Tuesday after four pm Eastern, right, So,
- 18:25Speaker 6: and where does that come from?
- 18:26Speaker 5: Like I've been cut at three point fifty six pm
- 18:29Speaker 5: Eastern wild, right.
- 18:30Speaker 7: So you don't get paid, don't get paid?
- 18:33Speaker 6: Wow, So if you get cut at four oh one pm,
- 18:36Speaker 6: I'm paid for that week if I don't. So when
- 18:38Speaker 6: I was in Baltimore, they cut me on Wednesday morning
- 18:41Speaker 6: because they were like, hey, we're playing on your back.
- 18:43Speaker 6: You know, it's showing good faith you, you know, we
- 18:46Speaker 6: like you all that type of stuff. We just need
- 18:47Speaker 6: to make some other roster changes.
- 18:49Speaker 5: Blah. Blah blah blah. So you know, take the time off,
- 18:52Speaker 5: you know, go work, stay stay in shape, but we'll
- 18:54Speaker 5: bring you back this week.
- 18:55Speaker 6: Then still wait on that. But then to see one
- 19:00Speaker 6: time these dudes, man, I it's funny.
- 19:05Speaker 5: I went and did like a whole charity out event
- 19:09Speaker 5: for him.
- 19:09Speaker 6: I went, We went to a high school and uh,
- 19:12Speaker 6: you know, tendn see Titans jerseys and all that type
- 19:15Speaker 6: of stuff.
- 19:16Speaker 5: And on the way not on the way back.
- 19:19Speaker 6: Later on that evening, I had some rehabs set up
- 19:23Speaker 6: a massage appointment and it's three fifty six.
- 19:27Speaker 5: I get the call. I'm like this random Tennessee number,
- 19:29Speaker 5: pick up the phone and man, we need you to
- 19:31Speaker 5: bring in your happen Oh man, y'all knew this before
- 19:35Speaker 5: you sent me on the event.
- 19:37Speaker 8: The whole they sent you on the whole charity event
- 19:39Speaker 8: and all that, And then they waited four minutes before.
- 19:42Speaker 7: The deadline of cuntry. So you don't get paid for
- 19:43Speaker 7: the week four minutes.
- 19:44Speaker 3: What about the massage? You have to cancel it. Orno.
- 19:48Speaker 6: To be quite honest with you, I told myself, I
- 19:50Speaker 6: was like, I probably should cancer because I don't know
- 19:53Speaker 6: when that next check you comes, right, right, you know what,
- 19:54Speaker 6: hey man, you gotta I probably need it right now,
- 19:58Speaker 6: you know, I probably need to just relax. So uh
- 20:01Speaker 6: so yeah, so my family literally they would know, don't
- 20:04Speaker 6: call me on Tuesday. So literally at four to one,
- 20:07Speaker 6: so years later, four to one p m. Whenever I
- 20:12Speaker 6: was good, I'd send them a bunch of gifts, a
- 20:14Speaker 6: bunch of money, we count making it range and all
- 20:19Speaker 6: that type of stuff. And then after you get to
- 20:21Speaker 6: year five, uh, once that ball is kicked off in
- 20:26Speaker 6: your first NFL game, then you're guaranteed your salary for
- 20:30Speaker 6: the whole year.
- 20:31Speaker 7: So like last year that.
- 20:34Speaker 5: Yeah, so last year was my first year having that.
- 20:38Speaker 6: So after that first game, I just sent them like sixteen,
- 20:42Speaker 6: you know, sixteen different ones. But it's it's a lot
- 20:45Speaker 6: of that goes into it, basically, you know, with what
- 20:48Speaker 6: you're getting at is there's a lot that goes into
- 20:50Speaker 6: it that people don't think about.
- 20:51Speaker 5: They don't understand.
- 20:52Speaker 6: Yes, you see that big contract, you see that big number,
- 20:55Speaker 6: and that is great, right, but what are you really
- 20:58Speaker 6: getting from that one out of fifty.
- 21:01Speaker 5: Percent of this gun?
- 21:02Speaker 7: Off off the river off?
- 21:03Speaker 8: Yeah, I'll talk about that because people don't fully understand
- 21:06Speaker 8: how taxes work. Right, and they're like, well you should,
- 21:08Speaker 8: you should set up corporation. Like their employees, they get
- 21:11Speaker 8: paid just like how you get paid, right, So they
- 21:13Speaker 8: don't have an opportunity to defer the income. It's not
- 21:16Speaker 8: it's not an.
- 21:17Speaker 5: Option, right, your boss ain't going for that exactly.
- 21:20Speaker 8: So I because social media a lot of times people
- 21:22Speaker 8: write that like well they if they were smart, Like, no,
- 21:25Speaker 8: it doesn't work like that, just like if you were smart,
- 21:27Speaker 8: you would do that, right, No, you don't have that option.
- 21:29Speaker 8: So automatically fifty because you know how you tax automatically,
- 21:32Speaker 8: thirty percent goes to taxes gone off the red. Depending
- 21:36Speaker 8: on what state you're in, it's even higher, right right,
- 21:38Speaker 8: then it's stay taxed. They take that out of your
- 21:40Speaker 8: paycheck every time you get paid in that in that
- 21:42Speaker 8: particular Yep, yep, they'll do that.
- 21:46Speaker 6: Like if you so, if you're playing in California, so
- 21:48Speaker 6: you look at the schedule, you're like, dangn I got.
- 21:51Speaker 5: Three games in California.
- 21:52Speaker 3: Right west coast.
- 21:55Speaker 5: That you know, you get taxed at that California right,
- 21:58Speaker 5: there's thirteen percent.
- 21:59Speaker 8: And it's crazy because Rod Smith shout to Rod Smith,
- 22:02Speaker 8: he's he's been a loyal follow up from the beginning,
- 22:04Speaker 8: and anybody doesn't know Rod Smith.
- 22:06Speaker 7: He's a Hall of Famer, right.
- 22:08Speaker 4: Not yet, but a legend, a legend in dev Dever
- 22:11Speaker 4: Broncos wide receiver Denver legend.
- 22:13Speaker 8: So I put a post up a while ago and
- 22:16Speaker 8: me and him, we was comming. He was like, yeah, well,
- 22:18Speaker 8: people don't realize it's that all right. California has the
- 22:21Speaker 8: highest state tax in the country, right, like thirteen percent,
- 22:23Speaker 8: like you said. But let's say you played it in
- 22:25Speaker 8: for Miami Dolphins Florida, right, which Florida has no state
- 22:28Speaker 8: income tax, right, So what happens is that you might
- 22:31Speaker 8: practice in Florida from Monday to let's say Thursday, right,
- 22:36Speaker 8: fly when you fly out for a Sunday game Saturday Saturday,
- 22:39Speaker 8: So you practice from Monday to Saturday in Florida. You
- 22:44Speaker 8: are in Florida, You're in California for Saturday and Sunday,
- 22:48Speaker 8: maybe like Monday morning early. So you only spent two
- 22:52Speaker 8: days in California. But the whole week is taxed in
- 22:55Speaker 8: California because that's where you played the game. Man, So
- 22:57Speaker 8: even though you prepared like you might only spend forty
- 22:59Speaker 8: eight hours in that particular state and you practiced in
- 23:03Speaker 8: the state that you actually live in, but it doesn't matter.
- 23:05Speaker 7: You played that game in that state. So for the
- 23:07Speaker 7: whole week, the whole week's paycheck is tax in California.
- 23:11Speaker 3: You guys played Jersey state tax or right, that's what
- 23:16Speaker 3: got played.
- 23:17Speaker 5: Okay, But I wouldn't be surprised New York trying to
- 23:19Speaker 5: take a little bit of that too.
- 23:20Speaker 3: I was thinking, like, New York can't take none of that.
- 23:25Speaker 6: But but I wouldn't be surprised. Trust me, I'd have
- 23:28Speaker 6: seen a lot. I've seen, like you said, every so
- 23:31Speaker 6: when we play a team in Texas, it's like, okay, cool, right,
- 23:34Speaker 6: London games, London international taxes, they cost a bit too, right,
- 23:40Speaker 6: Florida teams you know, you see Miami or Tampa ballion schedule.
- 23:44Speaker 5: You likes Tennessee, you know cool?
- 23:48Speaker 6: Another thing, you know, a few years ago, there was
- 23:51Speaker 6: a guy in the locker room when I was in Detroit. Detroit,
- 23:53Speaker 6: they have the city tax and the state tax, so
- 23:56Speaker 6: they'll tax you in Michigan and then they'll tax you
- 23:58Speaker 6: in Detroit.
- 23:59Speaker 5: Now when we so, one guy got.
- 24:03Speaker 6: Very very smart financial advisor account and got very very
- 24:07Speaker 6: smart with it because again, like you said, if you
- 24:10Speaker 6: guys want to play the game with me, of like, okay, hey.
- 24:12Speaker 5: I'm only here for twenty four hours.
- 24:16Speaker 6: You know, sometimes we flying at five pm, we out
- 24:18Speaker 6: the next day at five pm after the game kickoffs
- 24:21Speaker 6: at one.
- 24:23Speaker 5: You know, I'm only here for twenty four hours. You're
- 24:24Speaker 5: gonna tax me for the whole week.
- 24:25Speaker 6: I remember his issue was Detroit was taking tax every
- 24:31Speaker 6: single week as if we trained.
- 24:34Speaker 5: There, played there, and all that stuff, like we were
- 24:36Speaker 5: there for the whole week.
- 24:36Speaker 6: So when when we played with the Lions, our facilities
- 24:40Speaker 6: in Allen Park, the stadium is in Detroit, Michigan, It's
- 24:46Speaker 6: like a twenty minute ride. But Detroit was trying to
- 24:48Speaker 6: take taxes as if you were there every single play.
- 24:51Speaker 6: So they'll actually literally break down the days and be like, well,
- 24:55Speaker 6: you know you were here one hundred and such and
- 24:57Speaker 6: such days. So he was like, no, okay, I'm actually
- 25:01Speaker 6: only there out of the what eight home games. I'm
- 25:05Speaker 6: there Saturday night when we stayed at the team hotel,
- 25:07Speaker 6: and I'm there Sunday when we play. So them one
- 25:11Speaker 6: hundred eighty days, now you got sixteen of them, right,
- 25:13Speaker 6: And so he ended up going back and getting some
- 25:16Speaker 6: money from Detroit on that.
- 25:18Speaker 4: So the interesting thing is like the way your mind's
- 25:20Speaker 4: working right now. You're like, if I'm play in Texas, right,
- 25:22Speaker 4: if I'm playing the Cowboys or the Texans, I know
- 25:24Speaker 4: there's no state tech.
- 25:25Speaker 3: How many of your counterparts have that same mind frame?
- 25:28Speaker 6: I think a lot due, I think a lot do
- 25:30Speaker 6: because I mean, at that point, you're talking about thousands, right,
- 25:35Speaker 6: Like you're not talking about like you're talking about the
- 25:37Speaker 6: difference in you know, depending on what you're making. You're
- 25:40Speaker 6: talking about the difference in like six at your grand
- 25:44Speaker 6: by playing somewhere else versus you know, I mean some guys,
- 25:49Speaker 6: I mean the way they getting paid.
- 25:50Speaker 5: Some guys.
- 25:50Speaker 6: You're talking a good fifteen twenty grand difference, right, So
- 25:54Speaker 6: guys are thinking about it again, you know, not to
- 25:59Speaker 6: take up all your time. But there's different things that
- 26:01Speaker 6: people out there just don't understand, like the fact of
- 26:05Speaker 6: like you have to have multiple places of residency, see right,
- 26:09Speaker 6: Like sometimes like you literally just have to. And I've
- 26:13Speaker 6: never wanted to be that guy having Like I'm a
- 26:16Speaker 6: frugal person, right, I'm cheap, cool.
- 26:19Speaker 5: With me, right, I have no problem. I'm proud of it.
- 26:22Speaker 6: But like I literally I have a home base here
- 26:26Speaker 6: in New Jersey with my wife and I. When I
- 26:28Speaker 6: was playing in Detroit, she works in Manhattan and she's
- 26:32Speaker 6: from here. We had home base here, so now play
- 26:35Speaker 6: with the Jets. I'm like, man, okay, like we can
- 26:37Speaker 6: just have home base like and that's the crib. Well,
- 26:41Speaker 6: guess what home base for me is forty five minutes
- 26:44Speaker 6: away from here in no traffic. So if I wake
- 26:47Speaker 6: up in the morning and it's raining hard. I remember
- 26:49Speaker 6: my first day trying to come in and reporting to
- 26:51Speaker 6: the Jets. It was raining hard, and my drive went
- 26:54Speaker 6: from forty five minutes no traffic and this is like
- 26:58Speaker 6: six thirty in the morning, right to an hour and
- 27:01Speaker 6: fifteen minutes. Now people are like, oh, we'll just wake
- 27:04Speaker 6: up early and all that type of stuff. Well, guess
- 27:05Speaker 6: what if you're late to your job, you get a
- 27:07Speaker 6: slap on the risk, right your boss. You know, at
- 27:09Speaker 6: a certain point you can't keep being lated. You'll get
- 27:11Speaker 6: your you get fired. But for me, if I'm late,
- 27:13Speaker 6: that's a thirteen thousand dollars fine, right, Like that's.
- 27:18Speaker 5: You know what I'm saying. I'll go ahead. And so
- 27:21Speaker 5: last year I had to rent a place.
- 27:22Speaker 6: I have a house forty minutes from here, and I
- 27:25Speaker 6: had I mean, some people might be like, well you
- 27:27Speaker 6: didn't have to know. Like for me, I had to
- 27:30Speaker 6: rent a place seven minutes. It's not worth the risk, right,
- 27:33Speaker 6: It's not worth the risk. It's not worth being a
- 27:35Speaker 6: few minutes late. And then also it's just the cost
- 27:37Speaker 6: of doing business.
- 27:38Speaker 7: Right, You're going to travel at forty five minutes, Yeah, forty.
- 27:41Speaker 6: Five minutes when I'm like I told people, it's an
- 27:44Speaker 6: investment as well, right, Like forty five minutes. That's forty
- 27:47Speaker 6: five minutes I could be working on my body getting
- 27:49Speaker 6: ready for the next week's game. That's forty five minutes
- 27:52Speaker 6: that somebody is literally watching film with Just how am
- 27:54Speaker 6: I gonna whoop Brandon coping this week?
- 27:56Speaker 3: Right?
- 27:57Speaker 6: And I need that forty five minutes to make sure
- 27:58Speaker 6: I'm prepared for him. Well, so there's a bunch of
- 28:02Speaker 6: different costs. You know, Guys talk about transporting vehicles back
- 28:07Speaker 6: and forth, right, Like I live in California, but you know,
- 28:10Speaker 6: on my home base, I'm born and raised in California.
- 28:13Speaker 6: I have everything over there, But now I'm with the Jets, Right,
- 28:16Speaker 6: how's my vehicle getting back and forth? Or am I
- 28:18Speaker 6: gonna uber it every day? Am I gonna walk every day?
- 28:21Speaker 6: Bike every day? What about when it's snowy? So do
- 28:24Speaker 6: I need to pay the transport back a car back
- 28:27Speaker 6: and forth? Do I need a rent a car? Don't
- 28:28Speaker 6: need to buy a car. Some of these costs that
- 28:30Speaker 6: we see guys with were like, you know, we just
- 28:33Speaker 6: assumed like, oh, this guy, he's being extra, he's doing that,
- 28:36Speaker 6: you know. But some of this stuff is just a
- 28:38Speaker 6: cost of like convenience and doing business at a high level, right,
- 28:42Speaker 6: and that you know, again, it's not a what is't
- 28:45Speaker 6: us right? I'm thankful to have those type of problems
- 28:48Speaker 6: as opposed to others. But you know, those are costs
- 28:51Speaker 6: that you just can't escape from.
- 28:55Speaker 5: My graduates from my school being force back drop.
- 29:00Speaker 7: Thanks drap bag Drop b Dross.
