Transcript
- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another tiny Dutch lesson? Luna: Yeah, I'm ready. What are we doing today? Lucas: Last episode we learned 'willen' – to want. Today we'll learn a similar verb: 'moeten' – must or have to. Luna: Oh, like 'I have to do something'? That sounds useful. Lucas: Exactly. So, the phrase is: Ik moet naar huis. Luna: Ik moet naar huis. Lucas: That means 'I have to go home.' Say it again? Luna: Ik moet naar huis. Lucas: Perfect. Now if you have to work, you say: Ik moet werken. Luna: Ik moet werken. Lucas: Yes. 'Werken' means 'to work.' So 'I have to work.' Say it once more? Luna: Ik moet werken. Lucas: Good. Now let's make it a question: Moet je naar de dokter? Luna: Moet je naar de dokter? That means 'Do you have to go to the doctor?' right? Lucas: Right! 'Moet je' is 'do you have to.' 'Naar de dokter' means 'to the doctor.' So the whole question: Moet je naar de dokter? Luna: Moet je naar de dokter? I think I got it. Lucas: Let's practice with a little scene. Imagine you're at home with a friend, and you say: Ik moet naar huis. Luna: Ik moet naar huis. Oh, your friend might ask: Waarom? Lucas: Good, 'waarom' from last episode. And you can answer: Ik moet werken. Luna: Ik moet werken. So you have to work. Then your friend asks: Moet je naar de dokter? Lucas: Yes, maybe they think you're sick. But you say: Nee, ik moet werken. Luna: Nee, ik moet werken. That's a nice little conversation. Lucas: Let's repeat all three phrases together. First: Ik moet naar huis. Luna: Ik moet naar huis. Lucas: Ik moet werken. Luna: Ik moet werken. Lucas: Moet je naar de dokter? Luna: Moet je naar de dokter? Lucas: Great. Now, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Dutch, you know our episodes stay ad-free because of listener support. Lucas: Okay, back to our phrases. Let's imagine you say 'Ik moet naar huis' and I answer 'Waarom?' You say 'Ik moet werken.' Then I ask 'Moet je naar de dokter?' Luna: Nee, ik moet werken. I remember. Lucas: Perfect. Now you try a different answer. If you actually have to go to the doctor, you say: Ja, ik moet naar de dokter. Luna: Ja, ik moet naar de dokter. Lucas: Yes! So 'ik moet naar de dokter' means 'I have to go to the doctor.' That's a fourth phrase built from what we learned. Luna: Ik moet naar de dokter. That's easy now. Lucas: Let's do a quick review. Say 'I have to go home' in Dutch. Luna: Ik moet naar huis. Lucas: I have to work. Luna: Ik moet werken. Lucas: Do you have to go to the doctor? Luna: Moet je naar de dokter? Lucas: Awesome. You've got it. Practice these today, and next time we'll learn another verb. Luna: I will. Thanks Lucas. This was really helpful. Lucas: You're welcome. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time on Learn Dutch with Fexingo.
