- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. And when he had called unto him
- 0:04Speaker 1: his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits,
- 0:09Speaker 1: to cast them out, and to heal all manner of
- 0:12Speaker 1: sickness and all manner of disease. Matthew 10.1 God, I
- 0:20Speaker 1: thank you that when you choose people for greatness, you
- 0:24Speaker 1: don't choose the people who look the part, but you
- 0:27Speaker 1: choose those whose hearts are pure, and whose willingness shouts
- 0:32Speaker 1: louder than any shortcomings they may have. Jesus, because you
- 0:37Speaker 1: chose twelve of the most unlikeliest of characters and personalities,
- 0:43Speaker 1: I will not look for perfection when choosing those who
- 0:46Speaker 1: run alongside me, but I will look for people whose
- 0:50Speaker 1: hearts are pure and who have a genuine willingness to
- 0:54Speaker 1: pursue the things of God. Through twelve disciples, You turned
- 1:00Speaker 1: the world right side up, Jesus. And through my relationships
- 1:05Speaker 1: and friendships, I know that we will make a lasting impact.
- 1:11Speaker 1: In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you for praying with me today.

- 1:32Speaker 2: The Twelve In our last story, Jesus witnessed one of
- 1:37Speaker 2: the greatest acts a friend can do. A few men
- 1:41Speaker 2: cut a hole in a roof just to get their
- 1:43Speaker 2: paralyzed friend down to Jesus. They went to great lengths
- 1:47Speaker 2: to see their friend healed, and their faith was rewarded.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Now we see the call of Jesus being given to
- 1:54Speaker 2: twelve ragtag misfits. Jesus would choose his followers not based
- 1:58Speaker 2: on skill or wisdom, He would choose the weak of
- 2:02Speaker 2: this world to change the world. This is the heart
- 2:05Speaker 2: of God, inspired by the Gospels.
- 2:10Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:13Speaker 3: Bible in a Year. Thank you for joining us. Last time,
- 2:17Speaker 3: we heard about some amazing friends who went to extraordinary
- 2:20Speaker 3: lengths to help their paralyzed friend get the healing he needed.
- 2:24Speaker 3: They got him to Jesus, and Jesus did the rest.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Jesus saw their faith and not only healed the man,
- 2:31Speaker 3: but forgave the man of his sins as well, which
- 2:33Speaker 3: was most important. It was an act that shocked and
- 2:37Speaker 3: offended religious leaders as Jesus was claiming now that he
- 2:41Speaker 3: has the authority that only God has, the authority to forgive.
- 2:46Speaker 3: We also heard how Jesus once again stirred the anger
- 2:49Speaker 3: of the Pharisees when he called Matthew, a tax collector,
- 2:52Speaker 3: a hated, despised tax collector, to be one of his disciples.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Jesus made it abundantly clear to them that he had
- 3:00Speaker 3: come to heal the sick and to help the sinner,
- 3:02Speaker 3: not the righteous or the self-righteous. Today, we'll hear how
- 3:06Speaker 3: Jesus ultimately assembles his group of 12 disciples. None of
- 3:11Speaker 3: these men were obvious choices, but as we'll discover, this
- 3:14Speaker 3: was God's plan all along, to show and to share
- 3:18Speaker 3: his glory with the world through people like you and me,
- 3:21Speaker 3: common ordinary people who will do extraordinary things in the
- 3:25Speaker 3: power of Christ. So let's listen now to the reading
- 3:28Speaker 3: of the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 3:31Speaker 2: It was the Sabbath, and Jesus entered the synagogue to worship.
- 3:36Speaker 2: The Sabbath was a time for contemplation and relaxation. It
- 3:40Speaker 2: was established by God for the purpose of pausing work
- 3:43Speaker 2: to rest in him. Some of his critics were in
- 3:46Speaker 2: attendance as well, waiting for any cause to rebuke him.
- 3:50Speaker 2: As Jesus entered, he saw a man with a withered hand.
- 3:53Speaker 2: The Pharisees watched Jesus closely as he approached the man,
- 3:58Speaker 2: They were waiting for him to heal him. They were
- 4:00Speaker 2: waiting for him to break the Sabbath law and work.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Jesus knew their hearts. They had completely missed the point.
- 4:08Speaker 2: He took the man with the withered hand and looked
- 4:10Speaker 2: at the Pharisees. Tell me, Jesus said, is it lawful
- 4:15Speaker 2: to do good on the Sabbath? If there is someone
- 4:18Speaker 2: in need, should we let them pass? What if their
- 4:20Speaker 2: life is in danger? Should we let them die? The
- 4:24Speaker 2: men were silent. For Jesus was revealing their legalistic hearts.
- 4:29Speaker 2: They didn't care about people. They only cared about looking righteous.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Stretch out your hand, Jesus said to the man. And
- 4:37Speaker 2: in that moment, the man's hand was restored. Everyone marveled
- 4:41Speaker 2: and rejoiced, but the Pharisees left and gathered together, seeking
- 4:45Speaker 2: for an opportunity to destroy him. Jesus took some of
- 4:49Speaker 2: his followers to a mountain. A great crowd followed them
- 4:52Speaker 2: and remained at the bottom of the hills. Jesus looked
- 4:56Speaker 2: out at them. His heart ached for them. They were
- 4:59Speaker 2: like sheep without a shepherd. The wind blew at the
- 5:02Speaker 2: top of the mountain. Jesus' eyes began to water. Do
- 5:07Speaker 2: not pray for the harvest, Jesus said. He gestured to
- 5:10Speaker 2: the people below, for there is a great harvest before us.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Pray for the laborers, for the harvest is plentiful, but
- 5:18Speaker 2: the laborers are few. With those words, Jesus appointed twelve
- 5:23Speaker 2: men to be his apostles. chosen men that would follow
- 5:26Speaker 2: Jesus everywhere. These men were not chosen for their knowledge, status,
- 5:31Speaker 2: or accomplishments. They were chosen for their hearts, their weakness,
- 5:35Speaker 2: and their willingness. He chose Peter, who was once called Simon.
- 5:41Speaker 2: He chose James and John, the sons of Zebedee. He
- 5:44Speaker 2: nicknamed them sons of thunder for their fire and enthusiasm.
- 5:49Speaker 2: He chose Andrew, Philip, and Bartholomew, the silent and humble
- 5:53Speaker 2: servants of He chose Matthew the tax collector and Thomas
- 5:58Speaker 2: the skeptic. He chose James and Judas the zealot. One
- 6:02Speaker 2: of the most unique men he chose was Simon the zealot.
- 6:05Speaker 2: He was one of the notorious dagger men, a league
- 6:08Speaker 2: of assassins trying to overthrow Roman rule. However, Simon renounced
- 6:13Speaker 2: his old ways for the sake of following Christ. Finally,
- 6:17Speaker 2: he chose Judas Iscariot, the man who would betray him.
- 6:20Speaker 2: He chose him and loved him, despite knowing who he
- 6:23Speaker 2: would become. This was the heart of Christ. Jesus' first
- 6:28Speaker 2: call to the disciples was for them to be with him.
- 6:31Speaker 2: They would sit by the campfire sharing stories and hopes.
- 6:35Speaker 2: They would know Jesus as a friend and king. Out
- 6:38Speaker 2: of that relationship, Jesus would send them out to preach, heal,
- 6:42Speaker 2: and cast out demons in his name. The disciples were
- 6:45Speaker 2: empowered by Jesus, and their strength grew day by day.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Whoever desires to come after me must first pick up
- 6:53Speaker 2: his cross and follow me. Jesus said. Whoever holds his
- 6:56Speaker 2: life too dear to lay it down will lose his life. However,
- 7:01Speaker 2: whoever loses his life for my sake will truly find it.
- 7:05Speaker 2: For what does it profit a man if he gains
- 7:06Speaker 2: the world's possessions but loses his own soul? Jesus called
- 7:11Speaker 2: his disciples to something higher. Not religious repetition or vain practices,
- 7:16Speaker 2: he called them to lay down their lives, money, and
- 7:19Speaker 2: convenience so that others may thrive. Jesus would model this
- 7:23Speaker 2: call himself. He would sacrifice everything so that people could
- 7:28Speaker 2: be renewed.
- 7:32Speaker 3: In today's passage, we read about another healing and another
- 7:36Speaker 3: confrontation with the religious establishment. Jesus enters the synagogue on
- 7:41Speaker 3: the Sabbath, and seeing a man with a withered hand,
- 7:44Speaker 3: Jesus took pity on him. He was merciful. This was
- 7:47Speaker 3: an opportunity to show the Pharisees how far they had
- 7:50Speaker 3: veered off the heart of the law. that they no
- 7:53Speaker 3: longer cared about people. To them, the constraints of the
- 7:55Speaker 3: law were about total control and power and for them
- 7:59Speaker 3: to earn God's favor by good works. They added on
- 8:03Speaker 3: to the commandments of God, their own laws. So when
- 8:06Speaker 3: the law commanded rest on the Sabbath, these people took
- 8:10Speaker 3: this to the extreme, meaning they could just overlook people's
- 8:14Speaker 3: great needs because it was the Sabbath day. Jesus saw
- 8:18Speaker 3: this as an opportunity to correct this very wrong thinking.
- 8:22Speaker 3: So he asked them, what was lawful on the Sabbath?
- 8:25Speaker 3: Was it lawful to do good or evil, to save
- 8:28Speaker 3: a life or destroy it? The answer is obvious, isn't it?
- 8:32Speaker 3: And to drive home this point, Jesus told the man
- 8:35Speaker 3: to stretch out his shriveled hand and immediately the hand
- 8:39Speaker 3: was healed completely. Even today, we must not allow the
- 8:44Speaker 3: rules and restrictions of religion to move us away from
- 8:47Speaker 3: the heart of God. We are missing the point. We
- 8:51Speaker 3: are missing the Lord if we put the law above
- 8:54Speaker 3: Jesus himself. Jesus is teaching us that our righteousness is
- 8:59Speaker 3: in him. And the only way that we can live
- 9:01Speaker 3: a righteous life is from the heart outward, from the
- 9:05Speaker 3: inside out. It is at this point that many of
- 9:09Speaker 3: the Pharisees began to plot against Jesus, looking for a
- 9:12Speaker 3: way to get rid of him. Next, we heard about
- 9:16Speaker 3: Jesus calling his disciples, 12 of them, to a mountain
- 9:20Speaker 3: to speak directly to them away from the crowds. It
- 9:23Speaker 3: was common for rabbis or teachers in those days to
- 9:26Speaker 3: handpick disciples, men to whom they passed down wisdom and guidance.
- 9:31Speaker 3: And this was the model Jesus was following as he
- 9:34Speaker 3: chose these men, these disciples. But when a teacher selected
- 9:38Speaker 3: his disciples, it would typically be the best and the brightest,
- 9:42Speaker 3: the most promising young students. But that's not exactly what
- 9:45Speaker 3: Jesus did, though he saw the potential and the promise
- 9:49Speaker 3: in each man he chose. Yet, he picked some unlikely candidates,
- 9:54Speaker 3: and he gathered a group that was far from homogeneous.
- 9:58Speaker 3: He had fishermen and tradesmen, a tax collector who was
- 10:01Speaker 3: seen as a traitor to Israel, and a Jewish revolutionary,
- 10:04Speaker 3: a nationalist who fought against the Roman government. He even
- 10:07Speaker 3: called a man whom he knew would one day betray
- 10:09Speaker 3: him to his death. Jesus was not looking to the
- 10:13Speaker 3: attributes the world viewed as strength. He picked men whose
- 10:17Speaker 3: hearts he could shape. men who would follow him with
- 10:20Speaker 3: humility and desire to serve. He chose the weak and
- 10:24Speaker 3: even the uneducated so that when they would one day
- 10:26Speaker 3: be great for the kingdom of God, there would be
- 10:29Speaker 3: no question that it was God's power, the power of
- 10:31Speaker 3: Jesus working through them. Just as God chose the lowly
- 10:35Speaker 3: shepherds to be the first to hear of the Savior's
- 10:38Speaker 3: birth and to proclaim his arrival into the world, Jesus
- 10:41Speaker 3: was choosing the unlikely, even some of the outcasts of
- 10:45Speaker 3: society to take his message of the gospel seriously. the
- 10:48Speaker 3: good news to the world. This should be a great
- 10:51Speaker 3: encouragement to all of us because when God chooses us,
- 10:55Speaker 3: he enables us to do what he's called us to do.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Just as Christ told these men, there is a cost
- 11:01Speaker 3: to following him. In Matthew 16, 24 and 25, we
- 11:05Speaker 3: read these words. Then Jesus said to his disciples, whoever
- 11:09Speaker 3: wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take
- 11:12Speaker 3: up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to
- 11:15Speaker 3: save their life will lose it but whoever loses their
- 11:18Speaker 3: life for me will find it. To follow Jesus is
- 11:22Speaker 3: not something that is casual or cheap, but it is
- 11:26Speaker 3: demanding and commanding. We are called to pick up the cross,
- 11:30Speaker 3: and at any price to be paid, at any cost,
- 11:33Speaker 3: we are to follow Jesus. But there is great reward
- 11:36Speaker 3: for all who put their faith and trust in the Lord.
- 11:40Speaker 3: And we know when we follow Jesus through it all,
- 11:42Speaker 3: that one day we will be rewarded in his presence.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Dear God, we thank you that you choose the weak
- 11:49Speaker 3: and lowly of us in this world to accomplish your purposes.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Help us to be willing. Help us to be humble,
- 11:55Speaker 3: ready to give ourselves at any price to follow you,
- 11:59Speaker 3: because we know the promise of eternal life lays within
- 12:02Speaker 3: us and before us. In Jesus' name, amen. Thank you
