- 0:00Hello
- 0:00I ordered the special exactly as it comes,
- 0:04But Stuff still Happened.
- 0:07So what's up?
- 0:08Dear listener,
- 0:09I— scheduling
- 0:10Scheduling announcement.
- 0:11This is gonna be the last episode of
- 0:13Stuff Keeps Happening
- 0:13until May 5th.
- 0:15I'm gonna be taking a
- 0:16bit of an overdue vacation.
- 0:18I'll be around, but as for this series,
- 0:20this will be back in May.
- 0:22Let's go.
- 0:23First up, I mean, it's
- 0:25gonna be the tariffs.
- 0:26Last week, Donald Trump put
- 0:27a massive amount of tariffs
- 0:29on basically every country in the world,
- 0:31including uninhabited ones.
- 0:33That's not a joke.
- 0:34Like he's, he put tariffs on penguins.
- 0:36The tariffs were far too aggressive,
- 0:38despite him saying that this
- 0:39was him going easy on them,
- 0:41and seemed to have been calculated
- 0:42by just completely misinterpreting
- 0:45how macroeconomics works.
- 0:46Like confusing trade
- 0:48deficit with like trade policy.
- 0:52It's okay to have a trade deficit.
- 0:54That doesn't mean a,
- 0:55that's not a bad thing.
- 0:56A trade deficit just
- 0:57means you're buying more
- 0:58than you're selling.
- 0:59It does, that's all.
- 1:01There are going to be countries
- 1:02in which we buy more than we sell.
- 1:04That's just how it is.
- 1:05Anyway, so the tariffs are bad.
- 1:07Who would have thought?
- 1:08If only anyone said anything
- 1:11about this ever.
- 1:12Dear God.
- 1:13Anyway, yeah, he put up the
- 1:14tariffs and the stock market.
- 1:16*sad stock market sounds*
- 1:17It went, "Woo-wee-wee!"
- 1:19It was just kind of like, "Ah!"
- 1:21It's really bad.
- 1:23That's, those are my stock sounds again,
- 1:24and we're back to the stock sounds.
- 1:25To put it in numerical terms,
- 1:28bad.
- 1:29In the first half day of trading
- 1:30after the tariffs went live,
- 1:32we went back a year in the stock market.
- 1:35A year worth of gains wiped out,
- 1:39purely because Donald
- 1:40Trump, a half dead con man,
- 1:43doesn't understand
- 1:44how tariffs work still.
- 1:46And no one was willing
- 1:47to tell him to stop this.
- 1:49This is a massive own goal.
- 1:51And the entire world is laughing at us
- 1:53and trying to figure out
- 1:54how to not deal with us
- 1:55moving forward, which is not good.
- 1:57It's not like, "Ah-ha-ha!"
- 1:59Now they're gonna have
- 2:00to be self-sufficient.
- 2:01It's a, "Oh, fuck,
- 2:03Everything is gonna cost way more money."
- 2:05It's estimated that the
- 2:06average American household
- 2:07is gonna be spending
- 2:07thousands of dollars more per year,
- 2:10like cars, electronics, food, everything.
- 2:13Raw materials,
- 2:14everything's gonna be more expensive.
- 2:17It's wild.
- 2:17Just a few weeks ago, people on the right
- 2:20were talking about
- 2:20how they were expecting
- 2:21to get checks from the government
- 2:23because of how much
- 2:24money Doge was saving.
- 2:26They thought the government
- 2:26was gonna cut people checks,
- 2:28like another round of stimulus checks,
- 2:30thousands of dollars per citizen somehow.
- 2:32And just a few weeks later, now it's,
- 2:34and you're gonna be paying thousands of
- 2:36dollars more a year.
- 2:37Deal with it.
- 2:38I wish I could give analysis and
- 2:41thoughtful discussion
- 2:42and let's try to
- 2:43understand this and see where we go.
- 2:46That's just not possible here.
- 2:48These tariffs are just dumb.
- 2:50No one wanted this.
- 2:51No one was ready for it.
- 2:52We are not ready as a country
- 2:54to bring back manufacturing.
- 2:55And you don't bring back manufacturing
- 2:58by cutting off access
- 2:59to all supply lines.
- 3:01Like I can see how a moron would think
- 3:03that that would bring back manufacturing
- 3:05because they aren't
- 3:06considering the broader picture,
- 3:08which now makes a lot of
- 3:08sense given the president.
- 3:10And China, Japan, and South
- 3:11Korea are working together,
- 3:14which is whack.
- 3:15Trade policy's so bad
- 3:17that China, South Korea,
- 3:19and Japan are working together.
- 3:20Yee-haw.
- 3:22Anyway, if you're pissed,
- 3:23you can have gone to a
- 3:25protest over the weekend.
- 3:27Let's talk about those.
- 3:28Protests broke out across
- 3:29the United States en masse
- 3:31at 1,300 plus locations to
- 3:34the tune of millions of people.
- 3:36The protests were largely peaceful.
- 3:38There have not really been any reports
- 3:39of any kind of like
- 3:40widespread violence or retaliation
- 3:42from cops or counter protesters.
- 3:45And largely just a
- 3:46lot of people showed up.
- 3:47There were about 500,000 RSVPs
- 3:49across all of the different events.
- 3:51And organizers are saying
- 3:52that they far exceeded that
- 3:54to the tune of like
- 3:55an order of magnitude.
- 3:56In some cases, there
- 3:57would be 5,000 people
- 3:59who RSVP'd for an event
- 4:01and 100,000 showed up.
- 4:02So that happening across 1,300 locations,
- 4:06we don't have the tally yet,
- 4:08but it's pretty significant.
- 4:10Some estimations put it at close to 1%
- 4:12of the US population having been out
- 4:15protesting this weekend.
- 4:16That is gargantuan.
- 4:18I know 1% doesn't sound
- 4:19like a lot, but that is a lot.
- 4:21My favorite take from
- 4:22all of this have been
- 4:23the people who are
- 4:24not for these protests,
- 4:27trying to downplay them, being like,
- 4:28well, whatever, it's not that impressive.
- 4:30But truly the cream of the crop.
- 4:33Are the people being like,
- 4:34don't these people have jobs?
- 4:37On a Saturday.
- 4:38You did good, buddy.
- 4:39You tried.
- 4:40The other thing I wanna
- 4:41note about these protests
- 4:42was that there is a very high percentage
- 4:44of older white people,
- 4:46older, really 30 plus.
- 4:47Older meaning not Gen Z.
- 4:49Y'all show up for shit.
- 4:51But there was a lot
- 4:52of discourse beforehand
- 4:54among black and other
- 4:55minority communities,
- 4:56talking about essentially leave this one
- 4:57to the white people because one,
- 4:59protesting as a
- 5:00minority in the US right now
- 5:02is life-threatening and two,
- 5:06white people did this to us.
- 5:07Like we have Donald Trump
- 5:08because of white people.
- 5:09Black people almost
- 5:10exclusively voted for Harris.
- 5:12And so they're like,
- 5:13yeah, no, y'all got this one.
- 5:14Which is fair because black people,
- 5:17especially black
- 5:17women are usually the ones
- 5:19carrying us over the finish line.
- 5:21They deserve a break.
- 5:23But let's keep talking protests
- 5:24because I wanna highlight
- 5:25a very big protest going on
- 5:27that's not in the US.
- 5:28Now I wanna preface this by saying
- 5:29I had actually written a half draft.
- 5:31This was going to be a main
- 5:32story from a few weeks back.
- 5:34But then something
- 5:34else caught my attention.
- 5:36I don't even remember.
- 5:37Point being this big.
- 5:38Because there are massive
- 5:40record-breaking protests in Serbia
- 5:42as they are pushing back
- 5:43against their authoritarian government.
- 5:45This actually started
- 5:46back in November of 2024.
- 5:48And it started with a roof collapsing.
- 5:50And now they might
- 5:51overthrow their government.
- 5:52Like that's the dominoes here.
- 5:54So back in November,
- 5:55a roof at a railway
- 5:56station in Serbia collapsed
- 5:58and killed 15 people.
- 6:00And this happened
- 6:00right after construction
- 6:02to renovate the station had completed.
- 6:04The renovation was
- 6:05slow and behind schedule
- 6:06and indicative of basically everything
- 6:08that's been going on
- 6:09with their government recently,
- 6:10just not being good for the people.
- 6:13And so what was a construction mishap,
- 6:15if you wanna call it that,
- 6:16has turned into a
- 6:17massive countrywide protest
- 6:20against an authoritarian regime
- 6:22that is not working for the people.
- 6:23After the collapse,
- 6:24there was an investigation
- 6:25and basically nobody
- 6:26was held accountable.
- 6:28And people were like, fuck
- 6:29it, we're done with this shit.
- 6:30And so as with many protests,
- 6:31it began with students
- 6:33blocking access to their campuses.
- 6:35And that has evolved
- 6:36into the largest protests
- 6:38that the country has ever seen.
- 6:40Just last month,
- 6:41there was a single protest
- 6:42that had 300,000 people
- 6:44taking to the streets,
- 6:45which broke the record
- 6:46for their country's history.
- 6:48And to this day, there
- 6:50are still ongoing protests.
- 6:51Unfortunately, it's kind
- 6:52of a stalemate right now.
- 6:54The government hasn't really budged
- 6:55and the protests haven't
- 6:57really made a lot of progress
- 6:58aside from getting
- 6:59people out to protest more.
- 7:01And so we're just in this holding pattern
- 7:03until one side breaks.
- 7:05We'll see, but pretty
- 7:07much where we're at right now
- 7:08is both sides are just waiting for a win.
- 7:10Keep at it, people.
- 7:11Never give up, trust your instincts.
- 7:14A wise man told me that.
- 7:15A wise...
- 7:18fox...
- 7:19told me that
- 7:21Hey, this is a self
- 7:23promo spot real quick.
- 7:24You can head to skh.news.
- 7:26I've got a newsletter, it's free.
- 7:27You can also support me
- 7:28with money if you want.
- 7:30Got a Patreon, it's not free,
- 7:32but it starts at three bucks a month
- 7:34and there's a lot of content there.
- 7:36Merch store, also not free,
- 7:38but you get stuff if you pay.
- 7:41Moving on, gaming.
- 7:42All right, Switch 2,
- 7:44let's talk about Switch 2.
- 7:45It's like a Switch, but
- 7:46they made another one.
- 7:47Nintendo did their big
- 7:48reveal of the Switch 2
- 7:49and it made a lot of people happy
- 7:51and a lot of people big mad.
- 7:52Gamers, let's talk real quick.
- 7:54Come over here.
- 7:55All right, gamers, it's
- 7:55just me and you, all right?
- 7:57What's up, gamer?
- 7:57Gamers, can we calm down?
- 8:00Just a smidge.
- 8:01I understand that
- 8:02there's a lot to be upset about
- 8:04in the world and in the gaming industry,
- 8:07but can we calm down just a scooch?
- 8:10We were less than 24 hours out
- 8:11from the Switch 2 announcement
- 8:13when people were already
- 8:14coming into my comments
- 8:15from last week's video in
- 8:17which I simply mentioned
- 8:18that Switch 2 pre-orders were going to go
- 8:20in effect in April.
- 8:22And I already got
- 8:23people in my comments saying,
- 8:24"The Switch 2 is ass and it's terrible.
- 8:26Don't buy a Switch 2!"
- 8:28Y'all...
- 8:28It's a consumer electronic.
- 8:30You don't need to pick a tribe.
- 8:32You don't need to have a camp.
- 8:33I'm genuinely shocked that
- 8:35we're still doing console wars,
- 8:36I guess is where I'm at,
- 8:37but let's get to the Switch stuff.
- 8:40The Nintendo Switch 2 is going to be
- 8:41priced at 450 bucks.
- 8:43What you get with that is a new device.
- 8:45It's got a bigger screen, a
- 8:461080p LCD screen, not OLED.
- 8:49It's not an OLED screen,
- 8:50which is one of the reasons
- 8:51that the gamers are Big Mad.
- 8:52It will support up to
- 8:53120 FPS in handheld mode,
- 8:55which is wild and I did not expect that,
- 8:58and up to 4K 60 FPS
- 9:00output in docked mode.
- 9:01The dock now has a fan in it
- 9:03to help cool the device down
- 9:04so it can do more stable performance.
- 9:06I will note that they
- 9:08do say 4K 60 FPS output
- 9:10in compatible games,
- 9:11waiting to see what that means.
- 9:13Aside from that, the
- 9:14Joy-Cons connect magnetically now
- 9:15instead of that
- 9:16chunky, chunky, chunky thing,
- 9:18which fun story, the
- 9:20first thing that happened
- 9:20with my Switch was somebody took it
- 9:22and put the Joy-Con on backwards
- 9:24and I thought they broke it.
- 9:25That was like day one,
- 9:26the day the Switch came out.
- 9:28They made the kickstand better.
- 9:29It's got more internal storage.
- 9:31They're adding like a video chat thing
- 9:34that runs like two frames per second.
- 9:36Doesn't look all that
- 9:37great, to be honest.
- 9:38Other than that, like it's
- 9:39honestly just a updated Switch.
- 9:41Like it's just, it's a, personally,
- 9:43I just one day Switch
- 9:44that could do 4K output
- 9:46and run games a bit more smoothly.
- 9:48That's literally it.
- 9:49Am I giving Nintendo a pass?
- 9:50Never, fuck Nintendo.
- 9:52They're extremely consumer hostile
- 9:53and extraordinarily litigious.
- 9:55Nintendo is not a good company,
- 9:57but they do make it a good video, Jane.
- 9:58But the thing that
- 9:59has people very big mad
- 10:00about the Nintendo Switch 2,
- 10:02is that the games will
- 10:03cost anywhere between like 60
- 10:05and $90.
- 10:07Specifically with an
- 10:08upcharge on physical media,
- 10:10as they're trying to push
- 10:10more towards digital media.
- 10:12There's new digital
- 10:13media sharing options,
- 10:14but like it sucks and it
- 10:15shouldn't be going this way.
- 10:16And I agree.
- 10:17But to be mad about $90 games in 2025
- 10:19is to ignore the fact
- 10:20that games have been $60
- 10:22since like 2005 and
- 10:25nothing stays at the same price
- 10:27for 20 years, except for
- 10:28like the Costco hot dog.
- 10:29And the only reason
- 10:30that price hasn't changed
- 10:31is because the Costco CEO
- 10:32has threatened to murder you
- 10:35if you change it.
- 10:35So yeah, that's a real story by the way.
- 10:38Anyway, two more quick
- 10:39things about the Switch too.
- 10:40It will also be backwards compatible.
- 10:42Three more things.
- 10:43It'll be backwards compatible.
- 10:44They brought back
- 10:45fucking DS download play.
- 10:47If you remember that,
- 10:48there's gonna be
- 10:48support for having a game
- 10:50and people can like
- 10:50download the game temporarily
- 10:53to their console to play with you.
- 10:54And that's gonna work on
- 10:55Switch one too, which is rad.
- 10:56But also, also we're
- 10:59coming back to the tariffs.
- 11:00Nintendo announced that Switch pre-orders
- 11:02would start April 9th.
- 11:04And then Trump was like,
- 11:05"We're gonna do the tariff at you."
- 11:07And then Nintendo was like, "Oh, sike."
- 11:09So at least in the US, Switch two
- 11:11pre-orders are on hold.
- 11:14First, they came for the
- 11:15gamers and I said nothing
- 11:16because I was a scrub.
- 11:17Second thing for gaming, and
- 11:18this is a kind of short note,
- 11:19but they're making Tony
- 11:20Hawk Pro Skater 3 plus 4s,
- 11:22like they're the combo game
- 11:23after they did one and
- 11:24two earlier and it was good.
- 11:25They've been announcing the
- 11:26soundtrack for these games
- 11:28and people got a little spooked
- 11:30because it wasn't the exact same
- 11:31soundtrack as the original.
- 11:32It eventually came out
- 11:33that Tony Hawk himself,
- 11:35Mr. Anthony Hawk is
- 11:37apparently having a bit of a role
- 11:38in choosing the soundtrack for this game.
- 11:40And he's like, "Look, y'all, you can
- 11:42experience new music.
- 11:43It's gonna be okay."
- 11:44He picked a few new
- 11:45songs from the soundtrack
- 11:46from existing artists
- 11:47from the original games.
- 11:48He was like, "Just
- 11:49like, listen to more stuff.
- 11:51Try something new."
- 11:52And then he had to assure people
- 11:53that there would be
- 11:54more of the original tracks
- 11:56coming soon in further reveals.
- 11:57Like calm down.
- 11:58Just kind of gonna
- 11:59point back to the section
- 12:00earlier in this video where I was like,
- 12:01hey gamers, can we come here a second
- 12:03and just chill momentarily?
- 12:05Technology, really
- 12:06medical science, I should say.
- 12:08How about your brain?
- 12:09Does your brain like to talk?
- 12:10You've likely heard of Neuralink,
- 12:12Elon Musk's like brain implant company
- 12:14that killed a bunch of monkeys.
- 12:15There have been a bunch
- 12:16of other research firms
- 12:17that have been doing brain
- 12:18computer interface research
- 12:20for quite a while.
- 12:20And there was a massive step forward
- 12:23in that research recently.
- 12:24Researchers were able to get
- 12:25a chip into a person's brain
- 12:27that was able to
- 12:28synthesize speech from thought
- 12:31in about three seconds.
- 12:32This is a big deal because a
- 12:33lot of these chips right now
- 12:34require you to think
- 12:35through like an entire sentence
- 12:37that it then has to work on
- 12:39and figure out what you wanted to say.
- 12:40And then it spits out what
- 12:42it thinks you wanted to say.
- 12:44This new chip can almost
- 12:46real time speak for you
- 12:49by just reading your thoughts.
- 12:50So with basically a three second delay,
- 12:51it can read what you're thinking,
- 12:53synthesize it into speech
- 12:54that sounds like your
- 12:55original voice and put it out there.
- 12:57And so this is an amazing step forward
- 13:00for people with complete
- 13:01paralysis and locked in syndrome,
- 13:03anything that prevents you from being
- 13:04able to communicate.
- 13:05It also means that we're one step closer
- 13:07to being able to airdrop
- 13:08memes to each other's brains
- 13:09by just thinking,
- 13:10which is either going to
- 13:11be the best or worst thing
- 13:12to ever happen.
- 13:13Over on Twitter, it's bad.
- 13:15The EU may hit Twitter with
- 13:17up to a billion dollar fine
- 13:18for breaking their digital services act
- 13:20by fucking with how
- 13:22like the check mark works.
- 13:23If you recall the blue
- 13:24check on Twitter used to mean
- 13:26this is a verified profile
- 13:27of somebody who is notable.
- 13:29It now just means this
- 13:30person's paying for Twitter.
- 13:31It caused massive
- 13:32confusion when people just started
- 13:33to register blue check marks under
- 13:35whatever name they wanted.
- 13:36And that pissed off a lot of people.
- 13:37It made it a lot harder
- 13:38to suss out what's real
- 13:40and what's a bot.
- 13:41It's a lot worse now.
- 13:43So the EU was already
- 13:44planning to find Twitter,
- 13:45but given that it is a
- 13:46privately owned platform
- 13:47and given that must privately
- 13:48owns other companies as well,
- 13:50they're using the total sum of the
- 13:52companies that he owns
- 13:54to calculate the fine,
- 13:55which is why they're
- 13:56potentially going to be doing
- 13:57up to a billion dollars,
- 13:58which would be quite funny.
- 13:59Apart from that, there was a
- 14:00massive data breach of Twitter
- 14:02back in January, where about
- 14:04200 million users got hacked.
- 14:06A user posted the leaked data
- 14:08from this recent hack merged
- 14:10with a hack from January
- 14:11of 2023 for a massive trove
- 14:13of data covering about 200 million users,
- 14:16including their emails, names, locations,
- 14:18all that good stuff.
- 14:19It's unclear how the hack took place,
- 14:21but the data seems legitimate.
- 14:22And the original poster was like,
- 14:24it seems like Twitter has
- 14:25no idea this even happened.
- 14:26So that's fun.
- 14:28Congrats, Twitter.
- 14:30Get off Twitter.
- 14:32Lightning round.
- 14:32Starting today,
- 14:34Meta is going to be ending their
- 14:36fact-checking services
- 14:37in the US.
- 14:38Cory Booker managed a 25 hour filibuster
- 14:41on the Senate floor.
- 14:42And regardless of what you think the
- 14:43impact of that will be,
- 14:44that is a physically impressive feat.
- 14:46The man starved himself
- 14:48and didn't use the restroom
- 14:50for 25 hours.
- 14:51And it seems he was trying
- 14:53to beat the previous record,
- 14:54which was 24 hours and 18
- 14:56minutes set by Strom Thurmond
- 14:58while he was preventing the passage
- 15:00of the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
- 15:03Oof.
- 15:04To help protect our country's seamen
- 15:06from icky concepts of gender,
- 15:07the Naval Academy has
- 15:08removed about 400 books
- 15:10from their library in
- 15:11their anti-DEI efforts.
- 15:13The TikTok sale may have
- 15:14been blown up at the last minute
- 15:16by the Trump tariffs,
- 15:17as China's obviously not
- 15:18happy about all of this.
- 15:19And so they're like,
- 15:20well, hold the fuck on.
- 15:22Let's go back to the drawing board.
- 15:23After admitting that they
- 15:24have mistakenly deported
- 15:25an innocent man to an El Salvador prison,
- 15:28the Department of
- 15:28Justice has fired the attorney
- 15:30that was working on
- 15:31behalf of the government
- 15:32trying to prevent bringing back that guy.
- 15:35Not because they had a change of heart
- 15:36and they want to do good now.
- 15:38They weren't happy with
- 15:39the way he was arguing
- 15:41that we shouldn't have to
- 15:42bring back the innocent man.
- 15:43He embarrassed the government
- 15:45by not properly preventing the judge
- 15:49from bringing back a dude
- 15:50who didn't get due process
- 15:51and committed no crimes.
- 15:52And finally for today,
- 15:54oil company Chevron has
- 15:55been fined $744 million
- 15:58for their ongoing role in the destruction
- 16:00of Louisiana wetlands.
- 16:02Can we quintuple that
- 16:04fine and then do it again?
- 16:05Thank you so much for
- 16:06listening to today's episode
- 16:07of Stuff Keeps Happening.
