- 0:00Speaker 1: Jeff, my apologies.
- 0:01Speaker 2: As we head out to the ramos Law hotline car
- 0:03Speaker 2: Accident you need ramos Law Medical doctor and attorney ramos Law
- 0:05Speaker 2: dot com. We are joined by Jefflagwall at ESPN dot Comedy. Again,
- 0:10Speaker 2: my apologies, Jeff. We had a lot going on today, Jeff.
- 0:12Speaker 3: We're using a Wi Fi in the outside of a
- 0:14Speaker 3: grocery store. We're doing the best we can.
- 0:16Speaker 4: Baby.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Yeah, well, it was the highlight of our day, to
- 0:22Speaker 2: be honest. Now we got we get delayed problems right now.
- 0:28Speaker 2: It's it's hang on, Jeff. We're trying to fix all
- 0:31Speaker 2: these things.
- 0:32Speaker 3: Vix microphone, where speaker was up?
- 0:34Speaker 1: What's going on?
- 0:35Speaker 2: I'm okay, all right, well, Jeff, as we head into
- 0:39Speaker 2: another week worth of Broncos off season and kind of
- 0:44Speaker 2: where they're at, checking the till on a few things.
- 0:47Speaker 1: My first question is health of the team.
- 0:50Speaker 2: I know we asked about Drake Greenlaw, that that's going
- 0:52Speaker 2: to be at least a little bit of an issue.
- 0:53Speaker 2: But to you, how big is both the health of
- 0:57Speaker 2: Hufanga and green Law to the defensive cohesiveness I guess
- 1:02Speaker 2: of the off season.
- 1:04Speaker 5: Well, I mean they rolled the dice and that they
- 1:07Speaker 5: these guys are gonna be ready. They felt really good
- 1:10Speaker 5: about it all before green Law hurt himself and you
- 1:14Speaker 5: know training, so again, green Law's thing is not supposed
- 1:19Speaker 5: to impact you know, the regular season in any fashion.
- 1:23Speaker 5: But I subscribe to the theory until I see him
- 1:26Speaker 5: move myself, you know, on the field with my own eyes.
- 1:30Speaker 5: Then I sort of reserve judgment. You know, bo Nicks
- 1:36Speaker 5: did have you know, the procedure early in the off season.
- 1:41Speaker 5: I'll be interested to see what you know, he's doing
- 1:44Speaker 5: in the OTAs later. But this weekend will be pretty
- 1:47Speaker 5: light work, you know. Tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday is the
- 1:52Speaker 5: scheduled rookie mini camp.
- 1:54Speaker 4: We'll see what they go through, but teams have dialed
- 1:56Speaker 4: that back.
- 1:57Speaker 5: I would expect them to be on the field, you know,
- 2:00Speaker 5: a little over an hour and you know, just kind
- 2:02Speaker 5: of a of a kick the tires type of practice
- 2:06Speaker 5: for these guys.
- 2:07Speaker 3: Hey, Jeff, we were talking about Nick Benito yesterday and
- 2:09Speaker 3: about an extension. And I've been looking through all the
- 2:13Speaker 3: different guys. I've been looking at their ages and what
- 2:15Speaker 3: they're getting and so on and so forth, and I'm
- 2:16Speaker 3: thinking to myself, Man, if they can get him for
- 2:19Speaker 3: twenty million per year or just over that. That seems
- 2:22Speaker 3: like a really it seems like a really really good
- 2:26Speaker 3: place to be. I guess my question is, would you
- 2:29Speaker 3: do that? And if so, do you think he's gonna
- 2:32Speaker 3: continue to produce at this same level, because it feels
- 2:34Speaker 3: to me like he is.
- 2:36Speaker 5: You know, he looks you know, his all you can
- 2:38Speaker 5: judge mode is by the resume, what they've shown you,
- 2:42Speaker 5: And that guy has improved each season.
- 2:46Speaker 4: Maybe more than anybody on the roster.
- 2:48Speaker 5: And me he started one game as a rookie, So
- 2:51Speaker 5: you're talking about a guy who did the work, has performed.
- 2:56Speaker 4: Now defensively they're looking at too.
- 2:59Speaker 5: You know, Zach Allen would like a new deal as well,
- 3:02Speaker 5: and Benito's gonna be up, and you know, those are
- 3:06Speaker 5: the kinds of things you're facing if you're gonna be
- 3:09Speaker 5: you know, if you're gonna keep a defense together. So,
- 3:13Speaker 5: but I think that's the going rate for a pass rusher.
- 3:16Speaker 5: You want an edge rusher who has impact on games,
- 3:19Speaker 5: You're gonna pay for it. And I think you know,
- 3:23Speaker 5: the two most important positions on defense in today's NFL
- 3:27Speaker 5: are edge rusher and corner. And you know, I personally,
- 3:32Speaker 5: I believe teams should spend whatever they need to to
- 3:35Speaker 5: keep those positions strong, because you won't.
- 3:38Speaker 4: You won't be able to play without them.
- 3:40Speaker 5: If you can't affect the quarterback, you can't play defense
- 3:44Speaker 5: in the league right now.
- 3:45Speaker 2: I was wondering, by the way, Leggy, because they have
- 3:48Speaker 2: people that have contracts coming up and they need to
- 3:50Speaker 2: find extensions. We mentioned you just were talking about Benito,
- 3:53Speaker 2: you mentioned Zach Allen Courtland, Sutton's contract is almost up.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Are they going to have to start making decisions on
- 3:59Speaker 2: who is pla the long term plan?
- 4:01Speaker 3: Like?
- 4:01Speaker 2: Out of those three, could there be an odd man
- 4:03Speaker 2: left out on who gets an extension?
- 4:05Speaker 4: You know, I wouldn't think so.
- 4:07Speaker 5: I mean they're still this year, they're wrestling with a
- 4:11Speaker 5: little bit left over of the Russell Wilson stuff, but
- 4:14Speaker 5: nowhere near the constrictions they had last year. So and
- 4:19Speaker 5: the cap is is growing at a rate you know
- 4:22Speaker 5: ten years ago people would have been stunned at so
- 4:26Speaker 5: I think they have the ability. You know, they have
- 4:29Speaker 5: done a few things behind the scenes that make it
- 4:33Speaker 5: a little more difficult. They've added voidable dummy years to
- 4:38Speaker 5: all of these contracts on a lot of their veteran guys,
- 4:41Speaker 5: So that can make it a little more difficult for
- 4:43Speaker 5: you to spread things out. But I think they have
- 4:48Speaker 5: the room and the wherewithal. They certainly have the cash
- 4:51Speaker 5: to do it. And that's one thing they have that
- 4:55Speaker 5: maybe half the teams in the league don't have, is
- 4:59Speaker 5: they don't have to worry about cash if they choose
- 5:03Speaker 5: not to. If they make a decision about not spending,
- 5:07Speaker 5: it's because they're deciding not to spend, not because they can't.
- 5:12Speaker 6: Hey, Leggy, how voluntary quotations are these voluntary workouts under
- 5:17Speaker 6: the Sean Payton regime.
- 5:20Speaker 5: I would say there's close de mandatory as except having
- 5:24Speaker 5: the word mandatory on them.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Uh.
- 5:27Speaker 5: They've had good attendance though, But you know, I think
- 5:30Speaker 5: getting guys to spend some of their off season time
- 5:33Speaker 5: in Denver is not as difficult as I've known guys
- 5:36Speaker 5: who've been the head coach in Buffalo who they used
- 5:39Speaker 5: to have to pay guys additional money to come in.
- 5:43Speaker 5: So so I mean that's uh, you know, they've had
- 5:50Speaker 5: good attendance so far, but there I think most players
- 5:53Speaker 5: feel like you better be a pretty prominent you know,
- 5:57Speaker 5: if patser Tan chose not to come and he has
- 6:00Speaker 5: not made that choice. He's been working. But if he
- 6:04Speaker 5: chose not to come, I think you'd need to be
- 6:06Speaker 5: a guy of that status and they'd still want him
- 6:09Speaker 5: to be here.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Yeah, Jeff, I don't know when that started in the
- 6:12Speaker 3: National Football League, no clue, but I do remember specifically
- 6:16Speaker 3: Mike Shanahan. Hey man, I don't care if the word
- 6:20Speaker 3: mandatory is not in front of it.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I don't give a rats rip.
- 6:24Speaker 3: I need you here. And look it paid off. He
- 6:27Speaker 3: won two Super Bowl championships. But maybe it's been going
- 6:31Speaker 3: on a lot longer than that. But I specifically remember
- 6:34Speaker 3: twenty seven years ago whatever twenty that was the deal, right.
- 6:39Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean it's been sort of the modern CBA most.
- 6:42Speaker 5: I mean that it's actually not a well known thing
- 6:45Speaker 5: or people forget, I think, but Mike is the reason
- 6:48Speaker 5: the offseason looks this way in the NFL right now,
- 6:52Speaker 5: with OTAs and specific dates, because I mean I was
- 6:57Speaker 5: on the beat when Mike had a July a camp.
- 7:01Speaker 5: It was the first time ever in the league, and
- 7:03Speaker 5: the players I don't think they ever forgave him that year,
- 7:06Speaker 5: but he had a July mini camp and and then
- 7:10Speaker 5: the next labor negotiations, Uh, the the month long dark
- 7:16Speaker 5: period appeared in the in the in the contract. So
- 7:20Speaker 5: Mike Shanahan helped build this offseason schedule.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Can I ask you a more general NFL question? And
- 7:30Speaker 2: the Pittsburgh Steelers over the years have had I guess
- 7:34Speaker 2: problem children at wide receiver repeatedly from Antonio Brown, Artevis Bryant,
- 7:40Speaker 2: Deontay Johnson, Juju like. The list goes on and on.
- 7:44Speaker 2: So here's what I've noticed as far as a trend.
- 7:47Speaker 2: When Mike Tomlin decides I've had enough, typically doesn't end.
- 7:52Speaker 1: Well. What do you think happens with George Pickens going
- 7:55Speaker 1: to the Cowboys?
- 7:57Speaker 4: I think that's a lot of that's up to George Pickens.
- 7:59Speaker 5: I think, you know, do you decide you know your
- 8:02Speaker 5: way is the right way since you know you got
- 8:06Speaker 5: your freedom, you were moved on, you know, and maybe
- 8:08Speaker 5: in your mind you think, well, you know it all
- 8:11Speaker 5: worked out fine.
- 8:13Speaker 4: I think it's up to him. He's definitely talented. I
- 8:16Speaker 4: mean I.
- 8:18Speaker 5: Look at where I had him and coming into the
- 8:21Speaker 5: league out of the draft that you look at it
- 8:23Speaker 5: at what he can do, you look at his metrics.
- 8:25Speaker 5: It is a talented player. But it is very telling
- 8:30Speaker 5: when Mike Tomlin says, I'm good. I mean he said
- 8:35Speaker 5: publicly last year the guy had to grow up after
- 8:39Speaker 5: I think he had two personal foul penalties or two
- 8:42Speaker 5: post play penalties against the Browns. Yeah, so when they're
- 8:46Speaker 5: done with you, they're done with you in Pittsburgh. It
- 8:49Speaker 5: is intriguing to me. It's all part of their big plan.
- 8:53Speaker 5: I think to try and get a quarterback in next
- 8:56Speaker 5: year's draft. That the Steelers already have twelve drafts and
- 9:01Speaker 5: next year's draft, and they look like they're trying to
- 9:04Speaker 5: shuffle the deck to have enough to move in the
- 9:07Speaker 5: first round if they want to.
- 9:09Speaker 6: Hey, off football subject, you've you've covered sports for a
- 9:13Speaker 6: long time.
- 9:13Speaker 1: Hell, you used to be on the hockey beat.
- 9:15Speaker 6: I'let to ask you something about what we witnessed last night,
- 9:17Speaker 6: the Nuggets get blown out in No cac In your
- 9:21Speaker 6: history of covering these type of series, do games carry over?
- 9:25Speaker 6: Do you think getting blown out like that could carry
- 9:27Speaker 6: over to the next game or does it really matter?
- 9:30Speaker 5: Beck, I think that's one part where we all wonder
- 9:33Speaker 5: what the impact of coaching is in pro sports. I
- 9:37Speaker 5: think recovery is a big part of good coaching, you know,
- 9:40Speaker 5: and it's how that the stars and the coach set
- 9:45Speaker 5: the mood after something like that happens. If everybody's you know,
- 9:49Speaker 5: moping around and all of that, then it can have
- 9:51Speaker 5: an impact that I've seen over the years, and it
- 9:54Speaker 5: does show you we you know, we we all think
- 9:57Speaker 5: the distance between good teams and bad teams is this
- 10:01Speaker 5: really huge, or good nights and bad nights is this giant,
- 10:06Speaker 5: Grand Canyon sized thing.
- 10:08Speaker 4: It's not.
- 10:08Speaker 5: It's it's two minutes of a game getting away from
- 10:12Speaker 5: you and you don't recover, right.
- 10:15Speaker 4: So I think that's the big part of coaching is recovery.
- 10:19Speaker 6: I agree wholeheartedly, and that's why I'm trying to walk
- 10:23Speaker 6: people off the ledge here. I really believe that if
- 10:26Speaker 6: you're gonna lose, lose big. And I've always believed that
- 10:29Speaker 6: because especially in a seven game series. This is not
- 10:32Speaker 6: the NFL, it's not one and done. It doesn't matter anymore.
- 10:36Speaker 6: I think it can only motivate at this point. So
- 10:38Speaker 6: hopefully it works for the Nuggets. Jeffrey, I see a
- 10:41Speaker 6: lot of the Broncos and Nuggets games. I'm sure they'll
- 10:43Speaker 6: be there tomorrow night, and they'll be there on Sunday.
- 10:45Speaker 6: So I'll do some on the field reporting for you
- 10:48Speaker 6: and send it your way.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Is that cool?
- 10:50Speaker 4: I appreciate it? YEA sign some more chickens was good?
- 10:56Speaker 1: Never done that before raw meat.
- 11:00Speaker 2: If if I brought some row chicken to you a
- 11:01Speaker 2: training camp, will you sign it me?
- 11:07Speaker 5: I don't have a cool sponsorship deal with a poultry company.
- 11:12Speaker 2: H Well, all conversations with the Jeff lake Over brought
- 11:15Speaker 2: to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical i v
- 11:18Speaker 2: e W Local sixty eight.
- 11:20Speaker 1: I'll bring an International brother of Electrical Workers. How does
- 11:22Speaker 1: that sound?
- 11:23Speaker 3: Bring one of those guys, will sign You're.
- 11:25Speaker 1: From Illinois, your union guy. It figures as much for.
- 11:28Speaker 4: You, right, I've practically been one of those guys.
- 11:32Speaker 1: I know you have right.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Uh like my work place and somewhere I'll take it out,
- 11:36Speaker 4: love it like you.
- 11:39Speaker 1: You're the best. I always appreciate the time. Thank you.
- 11:41Speaker 4: But yeah,
