- 1:00Good day my name is Chris and I'm an alcoholic and member of
- 1:03Alcoholics Anonymous. My journey into alcohol began
- 1:10quite a long time before I actually picked a drink up.
- 1:13My father was a a violent alcoholic and I hated what
- 1:18alcohol did to him and what I did to my family and never
- 1:24occurred to me that when I was 14 or 15 there may not be a good
- 1:29idea for me to to pick up a dream which I did with impunity.
- 1:34I was young and Billy and started chasing girls and
- 1:38smoking cigarettes all around about the same time and while it
- 1:43was fun at the in the early times, my dream as I grew all a
- 1:48bit older and started attending clubs and clubs and nightclubs
- 1:52was a little bit different to my friends.
- 1:54And when it was my shark to go and get around the drinks, I'd
- 1:59want an extra 1 at the bar for me doing a while while up on the
- 2:03drinks, I'd have the quick one at the bar.
- 2:05And consequently I used to get pretty drunk and fool of myself.
- 2:11And I was very fortunate at the at the age of 15, I met my wife
- 2:18to be and we we went all merely drinking and partying as young
- 2:24kids too, and gradged me progressing into into into
- 2:29alcoholism. In the age of 20 we we decided
- 2:34to emigrate to Australia and we arrived in Australia on the 30th
- 2:40of December 1974 at 6:30 in the morning.
- 2:45Arrived in Sydney and I thought I'd come to the head and more
- 2:51than my my brother got me to an early opener.
- 2:54I couldn't believe my luck. I don't want a wonderful place
- 2:57to give the deer to do in the morning and.
- 2:59And it prevent from me it prevent from me and it it got
- 3:04gradually worse and we made some friends and bodies happened and
- 3:10and Chris would be the person that would be at the end of the
- 3:12night always sleep drunk in the corner somewhere or going to
- 3:19somebody's bed that wasn't here. So consequently the invite child
- 3:25were getting left and left and less.
- 3:26And at the age of 20 or there about 20 years after six years,
- 3:33about 26, my wife start making noise about starting a family.
- 3:37And so my sister was living in Adelaide inside the move over
- 3:42here and begin a family in Adelaide.
- 3:45And my son, first son came along shortly after that.
- 3:50And that changed my dream. I went from having dreams I come
- 3:54into the house where I could spend anything I wanted on
- 3:58alcohol to having to buy the cheapest stuff so I could have
- 4:04enough. And I, I, I, I went to all, all
- 4:09the things with the cheapest stuff you do home brews and all
- 4:12sorts of things, gravy. And it was getting progressively
- 4:15worse and worse and worse. I did try to slow down
- 4:20occasionally. My wife quite often recommended
- 4:23eyes I slow down that we couldn't afford the way I was
- 4:25doing. And my solution was that was to,
- 4:28to buy a spare cask of wine and put that in the bedroom and top
- 4:32the one up in the fridge out the one in the red room where I
- 4:35thought you would never know what I was doing.
- 4:39I used to get confused where I'd mix my kinds of wine instead of
- 4:44buying the same one. And we have all sorts of argue
- 4:49about my the money I was spending.
- 4:54It's a progressive illness. And that was progressing purely
- 4:58in me and I I went down this bargain.
- 5:03My wife, we had another child. My wife became the the mum to
- 5:07shriek is because I was the biggest kid and she looked at me
- 5:10very well. But for many years in in
- 5:13ignorance of this disease that I had.
- 5:16I didn't know it was a disease. I wanted to stop drinking.
- 5:19I tried many times to stop, but I just couldn't.
- 5:23I I stopped thinking of smoke at the same time and I used one or
- 5:27the other as an excuse to to start them both.
- 5:30You know, I'd have a cigarette, so that's why I'm a drink.
- 5:33I'd have a drink somewhere while I have a cigarette, you know,
- 5:35and I had no idea how to stop. And the last few years my baking
- 5:41was absolute hell. I was made, made unemployed.
- 5:47I was retrenched, you know, generally, although I am
- 5:50thinking more in war and drinking at work that I don't
- 5:53think the job would have lasted a lot longer.
- 5:55But I was retrenched and I was drinking from the moment my eyes
- 6:00open to the moment I crashed out.
- 6:01Whatever time it was later on in the day.
- 6:03And I was meant to do the the house has been bit during that
- 6:09time and look after the the the chores.
- 6:12And that became a system of rewards.
- 6:15I'd do a little vacuuming that's worth a drink, nor the washing
- 6:18that's worth another drink. The ladies must have lunch about
- 6:2212 and watch the midday movie. I'll do that.
- 6:25I'll my lunch was a couple more drinks.
- 6:29And sometimes I'll go and get the kids from school.
- 6:32Sometimes I'd be asleep on the couch.
- 6:34And it depends on how how bad I got during that time from my my
- 6:40best alcoholic friend, vodka. I I had bird.
- 6:44You couldn't smell it. You couldn't taste it.
- 6:47Nobody will know what I was thinking didn't matter that I
- 6:51was bounced off the wall. And my wife and I think that day
- 6:55that my my mind thought she can't smell it.
- 6:58She can't dig it. Just she won't know I've been
- 7:00doing again. We got in the many, many
- 7:04arguments, you know, and I, I couldn't get myself well enough
- 7:09to go back to work. And she used to go out and earn
- 7:12the money for my alcohol and, and I would lie and cheat and
- 7:17steal to get the money and, and yet she would have give it to me
- 7:20if I asked, you know, but I, I couldn't, I couldn't even do
- 7:24that. I couldn't be honest about.
- 7:25I just had to lie about. I continued for many, many years
- 7:30and until at the end of my drinking, suicide was the
- 7:36desktop and I could come up with it.
- 7:38I thought, I thought back then, I thought it was an honorable
- 7:43thing for me to do. I thought I get myself out of
- 7:47the picture. I'd be out of the piano again
- 7:49and my wife and children can get on with their lives and
- 7:53allergies supply. But do I say that different?
- 7:56I sort of say that it was all about me.
- 7:59It was about me getting out the pain I was in with the stuffed
- 8:05my wife and kids. I was deprived and her husband
- 8:08got a very good one and my kids, the father also not a very good
- 8:14one, but I was I was so very. It didn't happen.
- 8:19I at night, I I had determined I was going to do it.
- 8:23I had a rope in one hand, a bottle of vodka and the other,
- 8:28and I was off at the front door to find a tree suitable for
- 8:33tying her up too. And if you'd asked me all those
- 8:37years ago, why the telephone my hand that night on the Tory, I
- 8:42don't know. I have no idea.
- 8:45But today I believe my hair power put that or my hand that
- 8:49hit me and I had called out all synonym and the men that called
- 8:54me back shortly afterwards and asked me to go out to a meeting
- 8:57the following with them too. Well, and I mean that being
- 9:02terrified and scared and what I would find and I found happy so
- 9:08bad people laughing and enjoying themselves and that blown me
- 9:12away. I didn't think you could enjoy
- 9:13yourself without without having a few drinks.
- 9:16And I so wasn't quite for the journey without.
- 9:20Oh, and I don't know if I am yet, but I had I had one more
- 9:24drink that you know, that it was all nice for me to go to the
- 9:28parrot covering. That's Audrey on a Saturday
- 9:31evening and my wife was away that weekend and I had that
- 9:37crazy band going from my end for a couple of weeks.
- 9:39Mention was away. I'll have a bit of an end of
- 9:41this weekend, then I'll stop coming on Monday and I thought
- 9:47this Saturday morning and still have a couple of drinks and I'd
- 9:51be all right to go out the Newton the most a couple of
- 9:55drinks once we start the couch top.
- 9:58But when the guy come to pick me up, I was pretty well placed and
- 10:01he still took me to the meeting and my quiz he had was being
- 10:05habit. We had thought I'd get throwing
- 10:07out the meeting. There was a long walk back
- 10:09console the abdominally. They capture anything I had and
- 10:13it didn't happen. The men will then put their
- 10:16hands out. They welcome me.
- 10:19Don't they keep coming back and it would get better it slowly
- 10:26but surely. It surely had.
- 10:27I hadn't had a drink. Should I think that night?
- 10:29You know that it's been been quite a few years.
- 10:32You know, I've had an amazing life, but my my wife joined our
- 10:38sister fellowship and on a few weeks after I joined, and that's
- 10:44been a true blessing because we we had we had two people in
- 10:48fellowships and I've got in our family that understood the
- 10:51disease of our goals. And I say that that Canelo speed
- 10:56is recognizes those deeds not not not a person being a bad
- 11:00person because I can't think it's a recognised illness and I
- 11:05had the illness and I had a found a solution was coming to
- 11:09our anonymous and and during the 12 step problem.
- 11:14And I I life doesn't stop because I got sober.
- 11:20Life still happens, but I have to find a way of, of coping with
- 11:25what life gives to me without, you know, they need to pick me
- 11:28up with me, you know. And shortly after I joined up,
- 11:35my wife joined Alan, my youngest son.
- 11:38He joined the the children's with the the origin of Alan
- 11:42Alateen. And that was a real blessing
- 11:46because I at that time, I had no skills of being a parent.
- 11:49I'd been drunk during most of the kids lives and he was about
- 11:5413 and I was trying to tell him what to do and he he wouldn't do
- 11:58it. We had lots of arguments but he
- 12:01joined our team and the only other team we forget to was it
- 12:04was about a 45 minute drive away and he go to those meetings
- 12:09quite often as far away as in the cards we possibly could.
- 12:15But coming home we could talk and I got to know him.
- 12:19A sudden during that time they got annoyed his father and today
- 12:24we have a wonderful arrangement. I I've been sober for quite some
- 12:30time. And after a few years, he found
- 12:35he needed this. I shouldn't be sharp.
- 12:36And that that's the reason I started with my father thinking
- 12:41I believe that it's also hereditary run twice to my
- 12:45family. You know, my father was an art
- 12:47Loic. I'm an art Loic.
- 12:49My son's an art Loic there's no six year sober and has given me
- 12:54two beautiful twin grand boys by Alderson understands how it was
- 13:00and you know we've regularly talked about alcoholism in my
- 13:04family. I've got two older grandkids
- 13:07that know what I hear. I don't hide this from any.
- 13:12It's part of me and I have a wonderful life.
- 13:17Today. I'm about to retire.
- 13:19My wife was just recently retired.
- 13:22We're going to do a bit of travelling and yeah, life's
- 13:25good. Yeah, as I said, life's not
- 13:27always good. But but this programme gives me
- 13:30a way of coping, a way of finding solutions for the any
- 13:36problems that come up in my life.
- 13:37There's always somebody in my fellowship who's been there and
- 13:41done that before me that I can go next.
- 13:43A bit about right, but how to deal with the problem?
- 13:47People, people get born, people get married, people pass away.
- 13:51That's that's part of life. But I don't need to take my
- 13:55drink for the day. Yeah, anything that I pick a
- 14:01drink for or poor, it's just another excuse.
- 14:04And there's no reason that I committed to me.
- 14:07But if I continue doing what what was suggested when I first
- 14:10came to their meetings keep coming to meetings, practice a
- 14:1512 steps in my life on a daily basis and don't take that I
- 14:19drink. There's no need to be in having
- 14:22another drink. I'm a currently generally agree
- 14:25about what this person in me and I hope to keep coming for many,
- 14:29many more years, one gate at a time.
- 14:31And that that the key to this whole to the it's be in only one
- 14:37day at that currently. Currently, I, I, I as a member
- 14:43of this project, I've done quite a bit of service for the
- 14:46fellowship and there was a big part of our fellowship, but the
- 14:50threefold disease, the threefold triangle service, recovery and
- 14:57unity. And as I said, service has been
- 15:00a big part of my life. I, I started off service earlier
- 15:05in the peak. It led me to, yeah, websites
- 15:12become conventions, websites fellowship and it, it's kept me
- 15:19involved in the fellowship, you know, to the point where
- 15:23currently I'm employed as administrator of a wonderful
- 15:27fellowship. And Deborah Fury and I work in
- 15:31the office and I, I, I can't recall from a lot of the
- 15:36newcomers asking for help. And it's a real blessing to be
- 15:40able to pass this message on to somebody and, and hope they get
- 15:44to a meeting. They have lots of good events
- 15:50all night. But I thought it should be we,
- 15:51we have, we have a saying we're not a lot.
- 15:57We certainly are. We, we have the regular count
- 16:04weekends away where, where we get together with 40 or 5060
- 16:10even in families and they have meetings and fellowship and have
- 16:15an absolute ball or a whole weekend.
- 16:17And we do that several times a year in SA and lots of times
- 16:24around down the country. There's events happening now, my
- 16:29regular event where where people drive all the way up the Darwin
- 16:33stopping on on weekends for a weekend here, weekend camp, you
- 16:37know, and we also have regular conventions which are bigger
- 16:42event you have once a year in each state.
- 16:47And next year we're going to hold 1 here and Adelaide in the
- 16:52Hilton Hilton Hotel. And the the five day get
- 16:59together is from all around the country and Alanons and other
- 17:04teams all around the country and all around the world.
- 17:07Sometimes they're they're incredible to see, to see 1000
- 17:13Alcoholics in one room all sort of a all same serenity bread as
- 17:18as an amazing state. And at these events, we
- 17:23understand we're not, we, we quite often have a dinner dance
- 17:30at these events. And every, every band we've ever
- 17:35had at one of the dinner that I've attended to come back and
- 17:39play for us again. Because as soon as they get up
- 17:43and strum one chord on the guitar, the dance floor is full.
- 17:47We no longer have to wait because we've had 6 beers
- 17:50before, you know, we dance. We, we, we want to enjoy
- 17:53ourselves all night long, not just wait until we're ready for
- 17:57it. And there's also comment
- 18:03worldwide convention, the people that tell you a very big
- 18:07fellowship about the people, about 2 million people
- 18:10worldwide. And we have the big book where
- 18:17we get on the end is called autonomous.
- 18:20That's been converted to 150 different languages so by the
- 18:28areas most countries around the world, which is a blessing.
- 18:34I've been to several companies overseas that I've been to do a
- 18:38meeting pattern That's a that's a wonderful feeling that you
- 18:41know my fellowship is with me where I am in in or the not very
- 18:48popularly. That is due to the variety being
- 18:51that a meeting on most cruises when the goose attackers in the
- 18:55the beer a spot held specifically for members
- 19:01together and have a have a day meeting on a cruise ship
- 19:04building. We we do all but, but they won't
- 19:07be. When you started started first
- 19:12come to Alcoholics and how did you how did you find the
- 19:16maintenance? Did you were you able to get
- 19:21there yourself or is people willing to pick you up and take
- 19:25you there or what Was the story there perfect.
- 19:31First couple of months a member picked me up and took me to all
- 19:35of the which I, I can't do it a blessing because I came in in
- 19:44November which was just starting to war up and it was a national
- 19:49England, England cricket tour that year and he never gave me
- 19:55the option to yeah, a lot. I watched cricket too hot.
- 20:04I stayed home, which was a blessing.
- 20:06That meant I got to lots and watch the meetings.
- 20:09You know, after a while I thought I made my own way to
- 20:14meet and I could pick people up and a good friend of mine came
- 20:19in. We went all round Adelaide,
- 20:25touring all the different meetings, you know which.
- 20:28There's a thing in the fellowship those that getting
- 20:31around stay around and we we went touring all over the place
- 20:36with, you know, you think nothing will drive down to take
- 20:39the harbour for a meeting the other night time and then coming
- 20:42home after the meeting. It was it was amazing.
- 20:46Lots of members of the fellowship all suffering the
- 20:49same be all trying to get well with them and it's just one
- 20:55alcoholic help below that how this program work you know and
- 21:00when they in in small all large venues.
- 21:07All we need is is do Alcoholics to hold a meeting, you know, and
- 21:13you have something like 110 missions in SA, I believe when,
- 21:21when we're out of COVID and currently about 55 of those are
- 21:25back up and running, they must start running online meetings.
- 21:30All the, all the updated meetings can be found on our
- 21:33website, a-sa.org. If you have a problem without,
- 21:40give us a call. But nothing, nothing to lose and
- 21:43everything to gain. It's a wonderful, wonderful
- 21:46fellowship. The wonderful way of life being
- 21:48sober, but the the the love I get off my grandkids nicked all
- 21:53worthwhile. You know that I never want to
- 21:56drink, you know, to say the love that they assure me and that is
- 22:00amazing. I'm loved by all the fellow
- 22:04people in the fellowship. You know, it's it's, it's it's a
- 22:09very different sort of organization that it run by the
- 22:15members. So all I, I work in our office,
- 22:20I'm not the boss, do I, the boss was how the other people have
- 22:23gone to the meeting. Now we have a very well run
- 22:28organization that that's controlled by the membership,
- 22:32not not by the ones that are doing the work for it.
- 22:37They're very strange to most people's concept.
- 22:39You know that the people on the on the on the in the meetings
- 22:44tell us what to do and we do it you know but but I do have to do
- 22:48what what they regret London fellowship the the way they
- 22:51want. They think it should be run and
- 22:55that run very very well for this disorganized yeah system.
- 23:03But it runs very well. It runs very well.
- 23:05We an annual conference where we decide where which way we're
- 23:11headed for the whole of Australia and and it runs very
- 23:18well which and we try and assist government agencies, the doctors
- 23:27and councillors and more and more of those are putting the
- 23:36tries to more just see a little bit coming up.
- 23:39This client and other client with a drinking problem may
- 23:44willingly try. We will try and help anybody who
- 23:47has a desire to bring with Bentley.
- 23:49Grateful thank you. My name is Chris and I bought
