- 0:09Speaker 1: Bob.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Moving on to some other topics. You wrote about Murakami
- 0:12Speaker 2: this week in a column.
- 0:14Speaker 3: Tell us what you.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Wrote about and how much it looks like the rest
- 0:17Speaker 2: of the league miscalculated for now.
- 0:20Speaker 3: I know things can change, the league can adjust, but
- 0:22Speaker 3: for now, he is hitting a lot of home runs.
- 0:26Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean he's hit home runs and four straight
- 0:28Speaker 4: games now, four homers last six games.
- 0:32Speaker 5: It's it's he's on fire, and he's been taking a
- 0:35Speaker 5: lot of walks.
- 0:36Speaker 4: He's still striking out. It just like everybody in Vision.
- 0:39Speaker 4: But for just two years at thirty four million dollars,
- 0:42Speaker 4: who couldn't use this guy? You know, like he says, guy,
- 0:45Speaker 4: it's early, but you know his numbers, you know, very
- 0:47Speaker 4: summer till guy like Kyles forbar Uh, he's, you.
- 0:50Speaker 5: Know, everything the White Sox couldn't imagine.
- 0:53Speaker 4: And talking to those young White Sox players, he's kind
- 0:56Speaker 4: of rubbing off on him and just the diligence, his preparation.
- 1:00Speaker 5: They're watching everything he's doing.
- 1:02Speaker 4: So if he can hit you know, over forty home runs,
- 1:05Speaker 4: even if he hits you know, two ten gets on base,
- 1:08Speaker 4: you know thirty seven, you know, forty percent of the
- 1:11Speaker 4: time it's going to be a steal. Uh, you know,
- 1:14Speaker 4: he should be easily to you know, price have it mentioned.
- 1:17Speaker 4: I would think at some point too, the WEISC will
- 1:19Speaker 4: start selling some tickets and the ATTENSI will go up
- 1:23Speaker 4: just to watch this guy if he's in the home
- 1:24Speaker 4: run race all year.
- 1:27Speaker 6: Is there is there a feeling around the league through
- 1:31Speaker 6: this first month watching him hit that hey, we were right,
- 1:35Speaker 6: but he's just hitting homers right now because the league
- 1:38Speaker 6: was saying he can't hit, he can't hit velocity over
- 1:41Speaker 6: ninety five miles an hour. Will he hit a homer
- 1:43Speaker 6: to center over the batter's eye on a pitch that
- 1:46Speaker 6: was ninety eight point one, so he kind of dispelled that.
- 1:49Speaker 6: But his other homers are all below ninety four miles
- 1:52Speaker 6: per hour or off speed pitches.
- 1:55Speaker 1: No.
- 1:55Speaker 4: I mean, I think teams are kicking themselves right now,
- 1:57Speaker 4: saying wouldn't have meant now we could have had this guy,
- 1:59Speaker 4: but that for that cheap only a two year deal. Uh,
- 2:02Speaker 4: that's a that's a steal. So I think they're saying, no,
- 2:05Speaker 4: what he's making the adjustment pretty quickly. Uh, you know,
- 2:08Speaker 4: we'll see what he does with the high velocity. But
- 2:11Speaker 4: he's you know, they thought that he'd have trouble against
- 2:13Speaker 4: a tough breaking pitches too. And I don't think you
- 2:15Speaker 4: ever imagine that he would, you know, had this many walks,
- 2:18Speaker 4: particularly early.
- 2:19Speaker 5: The guy can run a little bit too.
- 2:21Speaker 1: Uh.
- 2:22Speaker 4: You know, well, Venable, their manager was just seeing saying
- 2:24Speaker 4: yesterday like, uh, he wants to steal some bases, and
- 2:28Speaker 4: they're kind of calling him down the bases like you
- 2:30Speaker 4: hold off here, but you know, beat out an infield
- 2:32Speaker 4: hit last night. He's showing some speed too, and uh,
- 2:36Speaker 4: he's really adjusted well in that clubhouse. You know, guys,
- 2:39Speaker 4: guys love hanging out with him already.
- 2:42Speaker 7: I mean, if you're saying guys love hanging out with
- 2:44Speaker 7: him and he's proving to be a big bat, how
- 2:45Speaker 7: long do you think the White Sox wait before maybe
- 2:48Speaker 7: extending him or adding a couple of years onto this contract,
- 2:50Speaker 7: or at least starting those negotiations.
- 2:53Speaker 4: I think they wait to least till next year early,
- 2:55Speaker 4: at least in the winter, see how it goes. But
- 2:57Speaker 4: if you Murakami said, okay, you know, how can I
- 3:00Speaker 4: get I'm sure he was disappointed in the amount of
- 3:03Speaker 4: money he got. A Remember at the beginning when he
- 3:06Speaker 4: hit free agency, people are talking about over one hundred
- 3:08Speaker 4: million dollars, and I think there is stune to see that.
- 3:12Speaker 4: Nobody in the industry thought he'd be that superstar player.
- 3:15Speaker 4: So he has the year everybody imagines or envision. Then
- 3:18Speaker 4: I think you will see some contract talks in the
- 3:20Speaker 4: off season saying, okay, what will end to keep you here?
- 3:23Speaker 4: But also in the flip end, he may be saying,
- 3:25Speaker 4: you know what, there'd be a whole lot of teams
- 3:28Speaker 4: are gonna be bidding for me in two years from now.
- 3:31Speaker 7: That's why I was just gonna you kind of just
- 3:32Speaker 7: cut to my point right there. If he becomes an
- 3:34Speaker 7: unrestricted free agent in twenty eight after the two year
- 3:37Speaker 7: deal for someone who feels like they were slighted during
- 3:40Speaker 7: the free agency process, do you think he'll even consider
- 3:43Speaker 7: the negotiations from the White Sox or he's got his
- 3:45Speaker 7: eyes already on that free agency again if it stays
- 3:48Speaker 7: this way that he's proven himself to be a certifiable hitter, Yeah.
- 3:52Speaker 5: Maybe too.
- 3:53Speaker 4: As far as how he dos that team him, is
- 3:56Speaker 4: it coming on? I mean, they're making improvements here, the
- 3:59Speaker 4: guys a nice young uh you know, they're playing some
- 4:02Speaker 4: nice defense, so a VC is that okay? You know,
- 4:05Speaker 4: this team can maybe be a possible contender in a
- 4:08Speaker 4: week division a year from now.
- 4:11Speaker 5: Maybe I want to be part of this.
- 4:12Speaker 4: But the flip in it's like, hey, why not let
- 4:15Speaker 4: you know, thirty teams been on me and see what
- 4:18Speaker 4: you can get. You know, not gonna be a not
- 4:22Speaker 4: getting restrictions on him. He's still got twenty six years old,
- 4:26Speaker 4: just coming into his own and you know, who won't
- 4:29Speaker 4: want a guy to you know, hit fifty some home
- 4:31Speaker 4: runs a year. And if he's doing that, he's gonna
- 4:34Speaker 4: be a nice attraction at the gate.
- 4:37Speaker 6: Can you compare his starts to other Japanese sluggers that
- 4:41Speaker 6: have come over, not even just the last ten years,
- 4:44Speaker 6: but the history of Japanese sluggers coming over and hitting
- 4:48Speaker 6: homers like he's been doing.
- 4:51Speaker 4: Yeah, right now, it's historic. So, you know, nine homers
- 4:53Speaker 4: in twenty three games, It's never been done. I think
- 4:57Speaker 4: Otani had five home runs, maybe six Saya Suzuki, you know,
- 5:03Speaker 4: he had a handful, but a uh you know, but
- 5:06Speaker 4: nobody's had this kind of start. So for him to
- 5:09Speaker 4: do that and uh, you know, do it so quickly
- 5:13Speaker 4: and how acclimated he is, He's getting more and more comfortable,
- 5:17Speaker 4: you know, according to his teammates a quote amenable that
- 5:20Speaker 4: why not. But what he's doing has never been done.
- 5:24Speaker 4: I mean even the nine home runs and what twenty
- 5:26Speaker 4: one walks has never been done by any major league
- 5:29Speaker 4: player in their first twenty three games.
- 5:32Speaker 5: So he's on president territory.
- 5:35Speaker 2: Bob Let's finish with the Misery Loves Company group. There
- 5:39Speaker 2: are quite a few that have a top twelve payroll
- 5:42Speaker 2: and a very slow start. But we'll spend some time
- 5:45Speaker 2: on the Mets, the Phillies, anywhere else you want to go.
- 5:48Speaker 2: But your thoughts on the slow start for teams like this,
- 5:51Speaker 2: and do you think that any moves will be made?
- 5:53Speaker 2: I mean, really, the only thing you can do this
- 5:55Speaker 2: time of year is make a manager change.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Yeah. I thought the Blue Jays were be in trouble,
- 6:02Speaker 4: but just you know, saw them in the Phoenix. They
- 6:04Speaker 4: you know, won a big game on Sunday. Then when
- 6:07Speaker 4: the first two in Anaheim, I think they're gonna be
- 6:09Speaker 4: all right. I can't believe the Phillies will keep playing
- 6:12Speaker 4: this bad. It's going to help with Zach Wheeler go
- 6:15Speaker 4: in that rotation. Uh, you know, we'll see what happens
- 6:18Speaker 4: with Taiwan Walker, but I can't believe these guys are
- 6:20Speaker 4: going to hit you know, keep hitting one seventy as
- 6:22Speaker 4: lefties all year. I used think it's got too much talent.
- 6:26Speaker 4: I think Rob Thompson, you know, is safe. Uh it
- 6:30Speaker 4: would be different if Alex Corra was out there, but
- 6:32Speaker 4: he's still employed by the Boston Red Sox, and uh, well,
- 6:36Speaker 4: I don't think they want to fire, you know, Carlos
- 6:38Speaker 4: Mendoza with the Mets. But this goes on, you know,
- 6:41Speaker 4: through the Twins series, then I think you're going to
- 6:44Speaker 4: have no choice. But hey, we got to make a move.
- 6:47Speaker 4: I think Mendoza would understand that. It's like, you know what,
- 6:50Speaker 4: you know, when you lose a uh this many games
- 6:52Speaker 4: in a row.
- 6:53Speaker 5: I deserve to take the poll.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Who would who would they? I mean, who could they
- 6:58Speaker 1: move to?
- 6:59Speaker 6: You said, if Alice Korra was out there, do they
- 7:01Speaker 6: bring a manager that's not on the staff in because
- 7:06Speaker 6: if you just bring an interim manager and essentially you
- 7:09Speaker 6: made the coach, you made the manager change all his coaches,
- 7:12Speaker 6: and so you're just bringing in somebody that was already
- 7:15Speaker 6: there watching the exact same thing night in and night out.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I'm not scoring.
- 7:20Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean Carlos Belt runs a natural choice, be interesting,
- 7:23Speaker 4: and you've got the Hall of Fame stuff that summer.
- 7:26Speaker 4: You know they'd be missing, you know, at least three
- 7:28Speaker 4: games in July to be at the Hall of Fame
- 7:32Speaker 4: while the team's playing.
- 7:34Speaker 5: There's guys out there. I don't know if you'd be considering.
- 7:36Speaker 4: Ah, you know a David Martinez who never even got
- 7:39Speaker 4: a phone call this winter. I've been let go Brandon.
- 7:42Speaker 4: The hide is still out there. So but yeah, I'm
- 7:45Speaker 4: not sure you stay on the staff. You know it
- 7:48Speaker 4: could be a Belt run, but outside him, I'm not
- 7:51Speaker 4: sure you're picking another guy on that coaching staff.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Support for today's episode comes from Square, and they've got

- 8:30Speaker 1: It right to you.

- 8:59Speaker 2: news that broke today regarding the Royals Ballpark and our
- 9:03Speaker 2: former Royal Eric Kratz might be able to help us out.
- 9:06Speaker 2: I didn't get to find out all of the details
- 9:09Speaker 2: here yet Kratz, but they've secured a two billion dollar
- 9:13Speaker 2: private investment to build a new ballpark in downtown Kansas City.
- 9:17Speaker 2: The announcement made by the team, I mean it sounds awesome.
- 9:20Speaker 2: Eighty five acre Crown Center project. They want to create
- 9:24Speaker 2: more of the buzz all around the park. I know
- 9:27Speaker 2: that there was the whole debate of, hey, you've got
- 9:29Speaker 2: this land all to itself, the easiest parking in the
- 9:33Speaker 2: entire world. There's endless parking out there for chiefs and
- 9:36Speaker 2: for royals, but they're going to be more in the mix,
- 9:39Speaker 2: so it should be more of a fun experience. I
- 9:40Speaker 2: can't comment a ton since I don't live there. Have
- 9:42Speaker 2: been there a bunch for covering the team, But what
- 9:45Speaker 2: can you tell us Kratz is someone who lived there temporarily?
- 9:48Speaker 2: Do you like all of this? And the one question
- 9:51Speaker 2: I think you won't be able to answer unless you know,
- 9:53Speaker 2: is the private funding doing all of the funding for this.
- 9:59Speaker 2: I know they did the vote with the public funding
- 10:01Speaker 2: that got voted down, so I don't know the nitty
- 10:03Speaker 2: gritty details, but it sounded like the public was like, nah,
- 10:06Speaker 2: I think somebody else should pay for this.
- 10:08Speaker 6: I mean, clearly voted it down. Even a former former
- 10:12Speaker 6: royal voted it down. Who was who was in the politics?
- 10:17Speaker 6: All I gotta say, don't screw it up. Don't screw
- 10:20Speaker 6: it up. I feel like I feel like Casey. I
- 10:22Speaker 6: feel like Kaufman is a stadium. Now we'll have to
- 10:25Speaker 6: talk about it was a stadium that was very sneaky.
- 10:30Speaker 6: One of my more favorite stadiums to go and visit
- 10:33Speaker 6: and to play it as a home home player. Kip,
- 10:35Speaker 6: you played there a lot, but it's one of those
- 10:38Speaker 6: things that like it's it's very unique.
- 10:40Speaker 1: I hope when they do.
- 10:41Speaker 6: This and they go to the new model of everything
- 10:45Speaker 6: around it, which I think will be great. I think
- 10:47Speaker 6: that's an awesome part of it, that you have a
- 10:49Speaker 6: whole experience. It's more money in the owner's pockets. All
- 10:53Speaker 6: that stuff is good, but there's some kind of there's
- 10:58Speaker 6: a quaint uniqueness to Kaufman.
- 11:01Speaker 1: The water fountains, the fact that you.
- 11:04Speaker 6: Know it still has that it has that older, older
- 11:10Speaker 6: just behind home plate, down the lines type of seating,
- 11:14Speaker 6: and then they have some seating and center field. It
- 11:17Speaker 6: just gives you a different gives you a different view
- 11:20Speaker 6: than a lot of stadiums that we now have with
- 11:23Speaker 6: the massive scoreboard. I have an affinity for it, but
- 11:25Speaker 6: I also have an affinity for what you said, Scott.
- 11:28Speaker 6: I grew up in Philly and the Vet Veterans Stadium
- 11:33Speaker 6: and all the surrounding stadiums were all in one parking lot,
- 11:38Speaker 6: just a massive expanse of parking lots now in Philly,
- 11:42Speaker 6: Citizens Bank Park, Lincoln Financial Wells Fargo are the three stadiums.
- 11:47Speaker 6: They're all still in those same parking lots. And I
- 11:49Speaker 6: get it. Team owners can't make a lot of money.
- 11:52Speaker 6: They can't, but there is a there is a beauty
- 11:55Speaker 6: of fans being able to get to the field park,
- 11:59Speaker 6: usually at an exuberant price, and walk into the stadium.
- 12:03Speaker 6: But they lose that when they go down to the
- 12:07Speaker 6: Power and Light District or the Crown Center down in
- 12:10Speaker 6: Kansas City. They lose that part of it, and it
- 12:13Speaker 6: just I'm afraid sometimes it pulls fans away from being like, no,
- 12:17Speaker 6: I'm not going from Overland Park where I lived, into
- 12:21Speaker 6: Kansas City because it's just not as easy. The traffic
- 12:24Speaker 6: around there, the streets aren't great. Where when you go
- 12:28Speaker 6: to Kaufman Bang you have Arrowhead right there, you have
- 12:31Speaker 6: the Chiefs training facility right there, and you have Kaufman
- 12:35Speaker 6: right there in it. It loses some of that for.
- 12:38Speaker 7: Me, it does, but I think you can gain it
- 12:41Speaker 7: back a little bit. I hope they pay homage to
- 12:44Speaker 7: Kaufman a little bit. I hope they keep the fountains
- 12:46Speaker 7: somewhere in there in the new one. I was going
- 12:51Speaker 7: to ask if it was by power light and all
- 12:52Speaker 7: that stuff. It's follow the money, I think, but I
- 12:56Speaker 7: think they can make it right. I think some of
- 12:58Speaker 7: these new stadiums are beautiful and very well done, and
- 13:01Speaker 7: I think they have a lot more for fans. So
- 13:03Speaker 7: what fans you say might be lost to the travel
- 13:06Speaker 7: might be brought back in by some of the stuff
- 13:09Speaker 7: where you see it, like the battery in Atlanta, or
- 13:11Speaker 7: stuff where they have stuff for kids. They have sports
- 13:14Speaker 7: bars there to come early and play games, and like
- 13:17Speaker 7: be around the stadium. Where around the Kaufman there was
- 13:20Speaker 7: just the parking lot, so there really wasn't anything to do.
- 13:22Speaker 7: And also, if you want to talk traffic, it wasn't
- 13:24Speaker 7: Kaufman like it was just the one road in and out, wasn't.
- 13:27Speaker 1: It It was? But it was.
- 13:31Speaker 7: It was massive, but it could get backed up too.
- 13:33Speaker 7: I think with driving downtown, at least there's gonna be
- 13:35Speaker 7: more directions to go in and out of having at
- 13:38Speaker 7: least more options. But no, I think it's it's It
- 13:43Speaker 7: was a beautiful stadium. I had a blast playing there
- 13:45Speaker 7: all the time. I'm with you. I thought it was
- 13:47Speaker 7: one of the better ones as well.
- 13:48Speaker 9: I loved it.
- 13:49Speaker 7: I thought it was loud too, and I really liked
- 13:52Speaker 7: the little sections in the outfield before the fountains. So
- 13:56Speaker 7: there was a lot of unique stuff about it that
- 13:59Speaker 7: I think the players and fans enjoyed. So I think
- 14:02Speaker 7: rather I hope they pay homage to it or keep
- 14:05Speaker 7: some of that stuff in the new one.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Power light is a little bit farther north of where so.
- 14:11Speaker 9: Is it power light?
- 14:13Speaker 7: Is it by that or is it by where maybe
- 14:15Speaker 7: the team visiting uh visiting t hotels were.
- 14:18Speaker 9: That was more the crowd puzzle.
- 14:20Speaker 6: Either the the I think that was the Omni or
- 14:24Speaker 6: I forget what that hotel was that was near the
- 14:27Speaker 6: that's in a different area.
- 14:28Speaker 9: That's called crowd.
- 14:32Speaker 6: The one place had the one place had peanut butter
- 14:35Speaker 6: and jelly pie.
- 14:36Speaker 9: Oh man, I was so delicious. I love that you're
- 14:40Speaker 9: remembering places by the dessert.
- 14:42Speaker 6: By the dessert. Yeah, it's it's by the dessert. That
- 14:46Speaker 6: was That was me. I mean, yeah, Alex Gordon never
- 14:50Speaker 6: ate dessert. And we said, look, we're gonna we're gonna
- 14:52Speaker 6: eat it when we win the World Series.
- 14:53Speaker 1: We're gonna eat it.
- 14:54Speaker 6: Well, they fired me before we won the World Series,
- 14:56Speaker 6: but I'm sure he had a piece.
- 14:58Speaker 9: Yeah you are Superman.
- 15:02Speaker 3: Mm hmm.
- 15:03Speaker 2: Yeah, you need to follow up and ask him if
- 15:04Speaker 2: he had the dessert. I think it's time, crats, it's
- 15:07Speaker 2: been long enough. I think we all need to know
- 15:09Speaker 2: if you had the dessert. And yes, Kip specifically separates
- 15:13Speaker 2: it by pies, not just desserts.
- 15:15Speaker 9: Yeah, I like that.
- 15:17Speaker 7: I love the the the stadiums that are in the
- 15:22Speaker 7: middle of downtown areas, though I thoroughly enjoy that just
- 15:25Speaker 7: because I love the backdrop. I love the commotion around it.
- 15:28Speaker 7: Like granted it's from a player's perspective, we don't really
- 15:32Speaker 7: have to deal with the traffic. We'll be on a
- 15:34Speaker 7: bus with a cop brigade in front of us clearing
- 15:37Speaker 7: the past.
- 15:37Speaker 9: So it's it's it's a bias thing to say it
- 15:40Speaker 9: like that.
- 15:41Speaker 7: But even going down to like Charlotte in Triple A,
- 15:45Speaker 7: I think I love the backdrop of that stadium.
- 15:47Speaker 9: That's what that's gorgeous.
- 15:48Speaker 7: Pittsburgh Wrigley Field is right in the middle of their town,
- 15:52Speaker 7: So it's like I I do really enjoy in the
- 15:54Speaker 7: middle of cities because I think it really brings in
- 15:56Speaker 7: the neighborhoods around there.
- 15:57Speaker 9: Uh, and and builds up a fandom even more so.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Yeah, and I know there's people that probably live a
- 16:05Speaker 2: quiet life downtown that are like, ugh, this is gonna
- 16:08Speaker 2: take over for eighty some days.
- 16:11Speaker 7: Ye.
- 16:12Speaker 6: Well, the area that it's going to is if you remember,
- 16:16Speaker 6: I mean people don't remember the parade, but the parade
- 16:18Speaker 6: for the Royals, it ended in like a big open area,
- 16:23Speaker 6: like I think there's some kind of monument down there.
- 16:25Speaker 6: So it's like right off the side of it. It's
- 16:27Speaker 6: a little bit south of the city. It's south of
- 16:30Speaker 6: that area, So I think it's a cool area, especially
- 16:33Speaker 6: that they get eighty five acres.
- 16:34Speaker 1: I think that's.
- 16:35Speaker 6: Yeah, it'll be it'll it will definitely be great for
- 16:39Speaker 6: downtown Kansas City.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Okay, I love to hear that. Here's a tweet from
- 16:45Speaker 2: a partial owner of the Dodgers to celebrate how Richie
- 16:51Speaker 2: has gotten from owning a team. He already has plenty
- 16:55Speaker 2: of money, but I just thought it was fun to
- 16:57Speaker 2: point to this little note from Magic Johnson. It's a
- 17:02Speaker 2: linked to MLB team values soaring, and he said, since
- 17:07Speaker 2: we acquired the Dodgers in twenty twelve for two point
- 17:10Speaker 2: one five billion dollars. The franchise has grown three hundred
- 17:14Speaker 2: and eighteen percent and is now valued at nine billion dollars.
- 17:18Speaker 2: And then he pointed out the success of the team
- 17:20Speaker 2: over that time period and leading MLB in attendance and
- 17:24Speaker 2: all of that. Right, Also keep in mind Forbes again
- 17:27Speaker 2: going by I think harder numbers, guarantee you if the
- 17:30Speaker 2: Dodgers actually were for sale, they'd probably go for like
- 17:34Speaker 2: eleven billion dollars exactly. I'll take the over on nine.
- 17:38Speaker 2: What did the Lakers just go for like tennish? Was
- 17:40Speaker 2: the valuation? Was it ten or twelve? Whatever it was?
- 17:44Speaker 2: It was double digits.
- 17:45Speaker 7: Congrats Magic, everyone's really happy for you. Coreculate are very wealthy.
- 17:52Speaker 3: Good job.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Well is Magic drunk when he texted this?
- 17:56Speaker 6: Because I'm sure there's some people in Major League Baseball that,
- 17:59Speaker 6: like Rob Manford's office that's like, or here's my conspiracy
- 18:08Speaker 6: theory for the day.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Is this their whole goal?
- 18:12Speaker 6: Is this Major League Baseball's whole goal to make sure
- 18:16Speaker 6: one team makes it completely unfair to get fans completely
- 18:22Speaker 6: off the true topic of what needs to be discussed
- 18:26Speaker 6: in the CBA. And they're like, Dodgers keep on spending Hey, Magic,
- 18:32Speaker 6: don't forget put out that tweet that really fires all
- 18:35Speaker 6: the fans up and shows how we need a salary
- 18:40Speaker 6: cap because or major League Baseball's shooting Magic at texts
- 18:44Speaker 6: and being like, hey, Magic, let's stop because we just
- 18:49Speaker 6: had a team that is technically a small market that
- 18:54Speaker 6: just sold for way more than their valuation. So Forbes
- 18:57Speaker 6: is going to start to really understand how much our
- 19:00Speaker 6: teams are worth here, and that's not what we're looking
- 19:02Speaker 6: for when we're going into a negotiation. We're trying to
- 19:04Speaker 6: show how, what was it biblical the losses were in
- 19:08Speaker 6: twenty twenty.
- 19:09Speaker 1: I think that's where Ricketts said that is correct.
- 19:13Speaker 3: I love a good conspiracy theory.
- 19:16Speaker 2: I think there was very little communication between Magic and
- 19:20Speaker 2: Anyboddy baseball wise.
- 19:21Speaker 3: I don't think he gets a shit. He's like, yeah,
- 19:24Speaker 3: I don't care what you guys say.
- 19:26Speaker 2: I'm Magic friggin Johnson and one of the best basketball
- 19:28Speaker 2: players ever on rich Azelle, and I don't.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Care what you guys are doing.
- 19:31Speaker 2: But yes, I'm sure there are a lot of comments
- 19:34Speaker 2: today after seeing that tweet, some thinking great, I'm glad
- 19:37Speaker 2: you put that out there, and some like quiet on
- 19:39Speaker 2: that team the Padres, which we mentioned at the top
- 19:41Speaker 2: of the show. We did have Drake Jake Croninworth on
- 19:44Speaker 2: Friar Territory yesterday. So let's run a little piece.
- 19:50Speaker 10: We asked Joe, since now you have a former teammate
- 19:53Speaker 10: who has become a big league manager, your big league manager,
- 19:56Speaker 10: what do you think could be next when you look
- 19:58Speaker 10: around the clubhouse?
- 19:59Speaker 5: Who do you think?
- 19:59Speaker 10: Joe Musk have said he could see being a major
- 20:01Speaker 10: league manager someday somewhere down the road when he's playing
- 20:04Speaker 10: days are over.
- 20:07Speaker 9: Oh, I don't know.
- 20:14Speaker 10: I'll give you a hint. It rhymes with Jake Cronenworth.
- 20:21Speaker 5: I appreciate Joe put in my name in there.
- 20:25Speaker 10: I mean, I don't know have you ever considered it?
- 20:28Speaker 10: I mean, you're in the middle of your career, so
- 20:30Speaker 10: I'm not trying to shave off the pastor here, please understand.
- 20:33Speaker 10: But I just I was like, hey, we've got to
- 20:35Speaker 10: Askince Muscrow thought, you know, somewhere down the road, this
- 20:37Speaker 10: could be a situation you go for.
- 20:39Speaker 5: I don't want to. I mean, I don't want to
- 20:40Speaker 5: think about that right now.
- 20:41Speaker 11: At this point in my career has got quite a
- 20:44Speaker 11: bit of time left, and but no I mean, I
- 20:47Speaker 11: think the way that I view the game and kind
- 20:50Speaker 11: of how the game's going and things that I look
- 20:53Speaker 11: at and how I prepare I think is a lot
- 20:55Speaker 11: of things, kind of like how a manager does not
- 20:58Speaker 11: to say it's something that I would want to do
- 21:00Speaker 11: in the future. I'm never gonna I'm all cross that
- 21:03Speaker 11: bridge when we get there.
- 21:06Speaker 3: Nice.
- 21:07Speaker 2: It also rhymes with Rake cronin Worth, the player they
- 21:11Speaker 2: were talking about. Yes, yes, Jake cronin Worth is Yeah,
- 21:14Speaker 2: definitely one of those gamer high Baseball IQ guys. So
- 21:18Speaker 2: if you want to hear more from that conversation, he's
- 21:21Speaker 2: on Friar Territory. You can click away podcasts, YouTube the
- 21:26Speaker 2: whole deal.
- 21:27Speaker 7: But thoughts I could see it. I got to I'm
- 21:30Speaker 7: buddies with him. I got to hit with him for
- 21:32Speaker 7: a couple off seasons when he was here. He used
- 21:35Speaker 7: to live here in Chicago for the winners because I
- 21:37Speaker 7: think that's where he met his now wife. But great dude,
- 21:42Speaker 7: very savvy, business savvy in that sense too, and he
- 21:47Speaker 7: is wired that way. I think he likes to know
- 21:49Speaker 7: the ins and outs of what he's doing on and
- 21:51Speaker 7: off the field. But like I said, with the business
- 21:52Speaker 7: or baseball so I could definitely see that.
- 21:57Speaker 5: For sure.
- 21:57Speaker 1: I played with him in twenty nineteen. Yes, you can.
- 22:02Speaker 1: You can manage anywhere, but you can't manage in the
- 22:04Speaker 1: crone zone. But he's done.
- 22:06Speaker 12: He stop bringing that kind of stuff up. My guy's
- 22:08Speaker 12: not even I don't think he's halfway through his contract yet.
- 22:11Speaker 12: Like that's the kind of stuff that they would bring
- 22:13Speaker 12: up to me at the same age that Crony is
- 22:16Speaker 12: right now, Like because I sucked, he's good.
- 22:20Speaker 1: Like do you want to manage one day? I don't know.
- 22:21Speaker 1: I'll figure it out when I'm done.
- 22:25Speaker 2: There are more than seventy thousand events listed on the

- 23:28Speaker 2: data dish with Kip. All right, Kip, so you're gonna
- 23:30Speaker 2: be on the hot seat here and this one, you know,
- 23:33Speaker 2: might make your brain melt a little bit. But a
- 23:36Speaker 2: friend of the show, Mike Petriello, was talking about two
- 23:40Speaker 2: strike approaches, and let's show the tweet reacting to what
- 23:44Speaker 2: he was talking about here and some of the numbers
- 23:47Speaker 2: behind it. So we tried to cut up as much
- 23:48Speaker 2: as possible, and this is in regards to hitters cutting
- 23:51Speaker 2: down their swings on two strikes. Of course, you have,
- 23:54Speaker 2: you know, a heavy crowd that believes that it is
- 23:58Speaker 2: ultimately a bad thing. So off, here's a fan saying,
- 24:01Speaker 2: first thing I did when batspeed data came out too,
- 24:03Speaker 2: and everyone comes to the same conclusion. What's interesting is
- 24:06Speaker 2: a two strike approach does improve all the things, all
- 24:11Speaker 2: the things you think it will more in play foul balls,
- 24:15Speaker 2: but the contact is so much worse. That is a
- 24:19Speaker 2: worse strategy. And Petriello, who works for the league and
- 24:22Speaker 2: does a ton of stat cast status and me too,
- 24:24Speaker 2: everyone who has looked into.
- 24:28Speaker 3: This found it, and no one wants to hear it.
- 24:31Speaker 2: Okay, So now let's flash forward to how he wrote
- 24:35Speaker 2: about how it's fascinating to look at what hitters are
- 24:38Speaker 2: doing with two strikes against them, and he shows with
- 24:43Speaker 2: less than two strikes, average batspeed is seventy two miles
- 24:47Speaker 2: an hour. Two strike approach goes to seventy point four
- 24:52Speaker 2: fast swing rate, which means over seventy five miles an
- 24:55Speaker 2: hour twenty five point six percent, it goes down to
- 24:58Speaker 2: sixteen point six p So it is pointing to how
- 25:02Speaker 2: there are many players who have a two strike approach,
- 25:05Speaker 2: but you can show and again, Kip, I hope you're
- 25:08Speaker 2: you're hanging with me. Here we can show you how
- 25:12Speaker 2: the analytical crowd believes that the quality of contact that
- 25:15Speaker 2: often is coming from this is not worth the squeeze.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Let's get your thoughts here first, as we show this
- 25:23Speaker 2: potentially complicated chart no strikes, one strike, two strikes, chose count,
- 25:29Speaker 2: It shows swing rate, and it shows what that swing
- 25:32Speaker 2: rate looks like versus the average.
- 25:37Speaker 9: Okay, let me.
- 25:39Speaker 7: Trying to add a couple of things. Here, are you
- 25:43Speaker 7: really having no? No, it was on screen. There was
- 25:49Speaker 7: My first reaction to that is like a no, shit,
- 25:52Speaker 7: like a duh like that people that there's people swing
- 25:55Speaker 7: harder or faster with less than two strikes. There, that's
- 25:58Speaker 7: your your normal swing, and I think you take off.
- 26:01Speaker 7: You're not taking off. Rather, that's not even the right
- 26:03Speaker 7: way to say. You're trying to be more precise. So
- 26:05Speaker 7: instead of like absolutely going at it that, you're like, okay,
- 26:08Speaker 7: we're being being more direct with two strikes. So it's like, yeah,
- 26:12Speaker 7: it's going to be a mile or two because you're
- 26:14Speaker 7: making sure you're shortening up so you're not coming from
- 26:18Speaker 7: a further distance. You're now coming from a shorter distance.
- 26:20Speaker 7: You're shorting up on the bats so you're not getting
- 26:22Speaker 7: the long whip effect speed. So now it's just more direct.
- 26:26Speaker 7: So it's kind of like a no duh on swing speed.
- 26:31Speaker 7: But he's saying go back to the first page where
- 26:34Speaker 7: you're saying it's a slower swing and it creates more
- 26:38Speaker 7: foul balls and contact, but then it creates less contact.
- 26:41Speaker 7: That part I need to hear again.
- 26:44Speaker 3: No more contact, more foul balls.
- 26:46Speaker 2: But they don't like the contact that's coming out of
- 26:49Speaker 2: the swings. And of course again I mean when you
- 26:51Speaker 2: have a two strike approach, how many times does that
- 26:53Speaker 2: turn into a little dunk and dunk into right field?
- 26:55Speaker 9: Is that part who doesn't like the contact?
- 27:00Speaker 3: The quality of content? Yeah, the data.
- 27:05Speaker 9: Again, I'm gonna repeat my answer from my thing.
- 27:09Speaker 7: No shit, Like, it's not about the quality contact with
- 27:13Speaker 7: two strikes. You want quality contact that's before two strikes.
- 27:18Speaker 7: I want contact with two strikes. I want to just
- 27:20Speaker 7: put the ball in play, because good things happen when
- 27:23Speaker 7: you put the ball in play. If I can find
- 27:25Speaker 7: a hole, if I could find a misstep from an
- 27:28Speaker 7: infield or stuff, instead of just spending the full dollar
- 27:31Speaker 7: on a swing and striking out and missing, more stuff
- 27:35Speaker 7: can happen. Good things can happen when you put the
- 27:37Speaker 7: ball in play, So it's not going to be if
- 27:40Speaker 7: I'm choking up and trying to hit the ball the
- 27:42Speaker 7: other way with two strikes, yeah, I'm probably not gonna
- 27:45Speaker 7: blast it off the right center field wall. It can happen, though,
- 27:48Speaker 7: stuff like that does happen. But if I'm still taking
- 27:51Speaker 7: a three to one hack monster hack with two strikes,
- 27:56Speaker 7: I'm not as precise because I'm still nothing as much contact.
- 28:01Speaker 7: You're trying to hit the ball the whole time, every pitch,
- 28:03Speaker 7: no matter what. But it's just the emphasis becomes more
- 28:06Speaker 7: on making sure the middle of my barrel is on
- 28:08Speaker 7: the middle of that baseball instead of just all of
- 28:10Speaker 7: the barrel to all of the baseball. So it's kind
- 28:13Speaker 7: of a no brainer data to me. I'm if I'm
- 28:16Speaker 7: still hearing it, but that makes me also believe that
- 28:18Speaker 7: I'm not still hearing what they're trying to say. I
- 28:20Speaker 7: guess so, or am I answering this correctly?
- 28:23Speaker 2: No, I think you are, And I'll keep adding to
- 28:25Speaker 2: it too, because yeah, I mean some of this is
- 28:27Speaker 2: coming from I guess there's some some saber conversations recently
- 28:31Speaker 2: or some type of meetup. So this is just like
- 28:33Speaker 2: the online chatter and you happen to be the one
- 28:36Speaker 2: on with us for the last ten minutes of the show,
- 28:38Speaker 2: So it's all you bibit. But yeah, I mean you
- 28:40Speaker 2: get I'm just reading some fan reactions here too. Yes,
- 28:43Speaker 2: one fence that did we remove elite power hitters from
- 28:45Speaker 2: the sample, middling and contact first players. Sub Segmentation matters,
- 28:50Speaker 2: for example, how does Bellinger fair versus judge does go
- 28:54Speaker 2: back to wade box as his approach never makes sense?
- 28:57Speaker 2: That doesn't make sense right, Like situation matters, for example,
- 29:01Speaker 2: percentage of runs in from third less than two outs
- 29:03Speaker 2: extra innings with a runner on second right. There's so
- 29:05Speaker 2: many different situations to point to this versus just saying
- 29:09Speaker 2: in a vacuum, don't slow your swing down with two strikes.
- 29:12Speaker 2: It's not worth it because you will hit less homers.
- 29:16Speaker 2: To me, that is just too basic in terms of
- 29:19Speaker 2: the data. And I think that's where you do have
- 29:21Speaker 2: a disconnect right where it's easy. And again I consider
- 29:25Speaker 2: myself in between, like I love numbers. I use those
- 29:28Speaker 2: for a lot of my points. I did not play
- 29:30Speaker 2: the game. But at the same time, sometimes you look
- 29:33Speaker 2: at something and you just say, well, the data shows
- 29:34Speaker 2: is this so this is what we have to do,
- 29:36Speaker 2: and then you know, you end up with the New
- 29:40Speaker 2: York mass loution twelve.
- 29:41Speaker 9: In a row again.
- 29:44Speaker 7: I just I think with the shorting of the swing,
- 29:49Speaker 7: like I'm just picturing, it's not people hear that and
- 29:52Speaker 7: they think maybe choking up and all that stuff I'm
- 29:55Speaker 7: thinking of. Instead of this big picture of golf swing,
- 29:58Speaker 7: base will sing whatever you want said this big motion.
- 30:01Speaker 9: Now.
- 30:01Speaker 7: Instead of started back here, I'm going to start it
- 30:03Speaker 7: from rate here. It's less time to create the momentum,
- 30:07Speaker 7: so it's less time to create the speed. I'm still
- 30:09Speaker 7: getting it up to as full speed as I can,
- 30:11Speaker 7: but I think that full speed is just not reaching
- 30:15Speaker 7: the high same data as maybe the original full swing.
- 30:18Speaker 7: But pitchers are nasty now. It's it's nasty er now
- 30:21Speaker 7: than they've ever been in the in the league, so
- 30:24Speaker 7: it's harder to make better contact. I don't think you're
- 30:29Speaker 7: I think you have to. You can't take a full
- 30:31Speaker 7: wide league wide data without some context because there are
- 30:35Speaker 7: certain hitters that just shouldn't be doing full as hard
- 30:39Speaker 7: as they can swings. There are certain hitters that like
- 30:43Speaker 7: Aaron Judge and Luis Arayaz have two different swings. One
- 30:46Speaker 7: is more focused on power and one is more focused
- 30:49Speaker 7: on contact. So it's like, it's what works for you
- 30:52Speaker 7: up there. So I just I don't know what the
- 30:54Speaker 7: data is even being used for. I don't think people
- 30:56Speaker 7: are like going for two strikes where this is the
- 30:59Speaker 7: normal swing, and then it's like, oh, I'll slow it
- 31:01Speaker 7: down with two strikes. Like nobody's doing that, even if
- 31:04Speaker 7: it's a mile or two different.
- 31:06Speaker 9: You're not.
- 31:07Speaker 7: I think they're just getting full think about it. So
- 31:09Speaker 7: we're like, oh oh and they waved it at it,
- 31:11Speaker 7: so it's like they got full too. You're adding that
- 31:13Speaker 7: in as a two strike is into your data. So
- 31:16Speaker 7: let's again, there's just not enough context for me with
- 31:19Speaker 7: all this that's hypothetical.
- 31:21Speaker 3: Let's just put it to you. Okay.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Let's say you're, you know, playing right now, and you're
- 31:26Speaker 2: for the most part changing your swing with two strikes
- 31:29Speaker 2: or changing your approach whatever it is, or everything right,
- 31:32Speaker 2: and it's not your a swing and a team comes
- 31:35Speaker 2: to you and says, hey, we need you to give
- 31:36Speaker 2: us your a swing for every single swing that you take.
- 31:40Speaker 3: What would you say back.
- 31:43Speaker 7: I'm offended because I thought I was giving you your
- 31:45Speaker 7: my a swing on everything.
- 31:47Speaker 9: You know, it's just not realistic.
- 31:51Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 31:51Speaker 7: I guess if my a swing A swing I'm guessing
- 31:55Speaker 7: is when two oh three to one you think of
- 31:56Speaker 7: fastball's coming, that's would you say that would be in
- 32:00Speaker 7: a swing You're.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Like, I think you have the top end bat speed
- 32:03Speaker 2: there you swing at it. I mean, you're not uncontrolled,
- 32:06Speaker 2: but you it's your a swing, it's your home run swing.
- 32:09Speaker 9: Right.
- 32:09Speaker 7: That's where my mentally, I can anticipate where I think
- 32:12Speaker 7: I know what pitch is coming and where it's coming.
- 32:16Speaker 7: Fastball in the zone because they need to throw a
- 32:17Speaker 7: strike here. So that's why I think that's going to
- 32:20Speaker 7: get my a swing. If I'm fooled earlier in the
- 32:23Speaker 7: bat and I let's say it's left on left now
- 32:26Speaker 7: and I have to see a curveball up instead of
- 32:28Speaker 7: already anticipating, there is no anticipating. I have to read
- 32:31Speaker 7: the pitch, So now I can't. I'm not as geared
- 32:34Speaker 7: up already because now I'm more in a little defensive mode.
- 32:37Speaker 7: I'm more trying to find the ball out of his
- 32:40Speaker 7: hand instead of just knowing or anticipating it'll be right
- 32:42Speaker 7: in the zone. Now I'm like Okay, where is it there?
- 32:46Speaker 7: It is instead of I've lost that geared up momentum,
- 32:50Speaker 7: the kinetic energy, if you will, where it's just stored
- 32:52Speaker 7: up and ready to go. Now it's more of a
- 32:54Speaker 7: read the pitch and find it. So yes, by by that,
- 32:58Speaker 7: I think the swing will be a mile or two slower.
- 33:01Speaker 7: And if I'm fooled where I was like, oh, and
- 33:03Speaker 7: I flare out at something, that's not going to be
- 33:05Speaker 7: as fast as my two zero geared up swing either.
- 33:08Speaker 7: So that data is like right where it should be.
- 33:10Speaker 7: I guess in my mind if I again, if I'm
- 33:13Speaker 7: answered it correctly.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, the data is where it should be. It's
- 33:16Speaker 2: just the overlying topic is what gets debated. You know,
- 33:21Speaker 2: a kid looks at this and says, Okay, now, I'm
- 33:25Speaker 2: not going to have a two strike approach in little
- 33:27Speaker 2: league anymore.
- 33:28Speaker 3: I'm just going to give my home on every pitch.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 33:32Speaker 2: That's where the debate gets really fiery, and I get
- 33:35Speaker 2: a little bit pissed off because I'm like, I don't
- 33:37Speaker 2: want every kid learning baseball that way or and but
- 33:41Speaker 2: I don't want to say this. I want you to
- 33:42Speaker 2: say if that's right or wrong.
- 33:44Speaker 7: It's been it's been happening for a while now, and
- 33:47Speaker 7: that data has already been out, and I looked in
- 33:50Speaker 7: a different form. It has been in the different form
- 33:52Speaker 7: of teams calling up guys who have better power numbers
- 33:57Speaker 7: but a lower average and aren't playing winning baseball, but
- 34:01Speaker 7: they have more home runs. And I was like, okay,
- 34:04Speaker 7: so you want a player who's not playing winning baseball.
- 34:07Speaker 7: So let's say me and another guy are down there.
- 34:08Speaker 7: I'm gon just say I'm the one playing winning baseball
- 34:10Speaker 7: right now, hypothetical, and I move a guy over, but
- 34:15Speaker 7: a guy doesn't get him in because with two strikes,
- 34:17Speaker 7: he's swinging out of his you know what, trying to
- 34:19Speaker 7: hit a home run, and it works maybe one of.
- 34:21Speaker 9: The five at bats.
- 34:22Speaker 7: But I've had four productive abs, whether two liners the
- 34:25Speaker 7: other way, and two got the guy over on a
- 34:28Speaker 7: guy on second, But because he hit a home run,
- 34:30Speaker 7: his stats are his power numbers, his ops might be higher,
- 34:33Speaker 7: he gets called up. That is the way the game
- 34:35Speaker 7: has been going and then being rewarded to the point
- 34:38Speaker 7: where it has not taught winning baseball. So winning baseball
- 34:42Speaker 7: has not been in the Major League, has not been
- 34:45Speaker 7: a focus for minor league teams or for minor league players. Rather,
- 34:49Speaker 7: they want to be seen and they know they can
- 34:51Speaker 7: be seen by the major league team with highlights and
- 34:55Speaker 7: a home run and stuff instead of the stuff that
- 34:58Speaker 7: doesn't show up in the highlight or the box score.
- 35:01Speaker 2: Rather, right, because the certain things get you paid and
- 35:04Speaker 2: others don't. So if you're going to get recognized and
- 35:07Speaker 2: certain things get you promoted and others don't, it does
- 35:10Speaker 2: trickle down, right, it does trickle down.
- 35:13Speaker 7: I hate to bring up your shirt right now. Those
- 35:17Speaker 7: guys have gotten paid and they're not winning games. The
- 35:21Speaker 7: other stuff is so swinging out of your butt or
- 35:25Speaker 7: swinging for the fence. I'm just saying where it's like, yeah,
- 35:27Speaker 7: it can get you to get paid and get recognized
- 35:29Speaker 7: in your face on TV, but it's like are you
- 35:31Speaker 7: Are you promoting winning baseball?
- 35:34Speaker 9: And you're not.
- 35:34Speaker 7: And it's not just them, it's across the league a
- 35:37Speaker 7: lot of ways. But I think I always gravitated towards
- 35:41Speaker 7: the guys who play winning baseball. And you get a
- 35:44Speaker 7: guy over and I like we'd always preach in Cleveland.
- 35:47Speaker 7: It's like you get the job done, You're coming back
- 35:49Speaker 7: to a full team giving you high fives, like way
- 35:51Speaker 7: to go, good, job, and it's like I love that stuff.
- 35:53Speaker 9: Not the guy who's just like, great.
- 35:55Speaker 7: Home great, you're one for ten, but you hit a
- 35:58Speaker 7: five hundred foot home run, You're like, like, unless it's
- 36:01Speaker 7: a one zero game, great.
- 36:03Speaker 9: I don't know. That's how I've always been wired.
- 36:05Speaker 2: So and you do see that even still with Cleveland,
- 36:10Speaker 2: and every player you talk to always says nowadays that
- 36:13Speaker 2: it comes through Jose Ramirez and the way that he
- 36:15Speaker 2: plays because he's a superstar, and yet he does those
- 36:18Speaker 2: things pretty frequently, right, he does come up with those
- 36:22Speaker 2: team plays that aren't just the superstar plays, and sometimes
- 36:26Speaker 2: you don't see that from a superstar. I mean, we
- 36:27Speaker 2: had Reee Hoskins on the other day. He's been in
- 36:29Speaker 2: a league for a while, He's played with plenty of stars.
- 36:31Speaker 2: He like could not wait to talk about Jose Ramirez
- 36:34Speaker 2: for five seven minutes to start the interview.
- 36:36Speaker 7: Jose Ramirez does everything superstars do. He hits home runs,
- 36:40Speaker 7: he fills the box scores. Jose Ramirez also does everything
- 36:45Speaker 7: a winning baseball player does. He does the little things.
- 36:48Speaker 7: He takes the ball in the dirt and gets to
- 36:50Speaker 7: second base. He does like he leads by example and
- 36:54Speaker 7: like in the box score. So if your best player
- 36:57Speaker 7: does the little things, the rest of the lineup going
- 37:00Speaker 7: to fall in soon, and the rest of the team's
- 37:01Speaker 7: going to fall in suit and do the little things too.
- 37:03Speaker 9: That's how a lot of times it works.
- 37:05Speaker 7: That's why you want your best players leading by example,
- 37:07Speaker 7: and Jose Ramirez is the perfect person to do that
- 37:10Speaker 7: because he does the little things well as well as
- 37:13Speaker 7: the big things.
