Speaker 4: This Friday and Saturday, the fifty sixth annual Capital City
2:37
Speaker 4: Art and Craft Show back at the Connell Seem Convention Center.
2:40
Speaker 4: John Robertson is here to talk about it. Good morning, sir,
2:42
Speaker 4: and welcome to the show.
2:43
Speaker 3: Good morning, thanks for having us.
2:45
Speaker 4: Thanks for being here all right, So do want to
2:48
Speaker 4: mention the show was sponsored by the Kinosity Lions Club.
2:51
Speaker 4: What about one hundred and fifty years, so, vendors, you
2:52
Speaker 4: expect we'll.
2:53
Speaker 7: Have about one hundred and twenty exhibitors in one hundred
2:56
Speaker 7: and fifty boost. Okay, we'll fill the entire grand hall.
3:00
Speaker 7: It's thirty six thousand square feet.
3:02
Speaker 4: And what kind of things will we expect for everything?
3:04
Speaker 3: You know, and it's there.
3:05
Speaker 7: And one thing that you'll find is that in our show,
3:09
Speaker 7: we have turnover every year, so about twenty five percent
3:13
Speaker 7: of the exhibitors are new to the show. So if
3:16
Speaker 7: you came last year, you aren't going to see all
3:18
Speaker 7: the same stuff. There's something new and fresh for you
3:21
Speaker 7: to see as well.
3:21
Speaker 4: And what are some of the I mean, I know
3:23
Speaker 4: you can't have all one hundred and twenty, but give
3:25
Speaker 4: it weeks out this year.
3:26
Speaker 7: We do have some painters that are quite accomplished.
3:31
Speaker 3: It's new.
3:32
Speaker 7: We have a lot of pottery, a lot of jewelry, woodworking, textiles,
3:38
Speaker 7: West Virginia food products.
3:41
Speaker 3: You can go around.
3:41
Speaker 7: You'll think you're at sam sampling all the things while
3:45
Speaker 7: you're there.
3:45
Speaker 3: And that's what I do now.
3:47
Speaker 4: And I tell you I've said this before, John West
3:50
Speaker 4: Virginia has got some really good, really talented artistans out there.
3:54
Speaker 4: But for me, it's all about the food. And we
3:57
Speaker 4: have some great foods that are made here in West Virginia.
4:00
Speaker 4: We do, and we'll have them all, several of them
4:02
Speaker 4: on display. All right, yes, and talk about that relationship.
4:06
Speaker 4: As we said with the Kanosity Lions Club.
4:10
Speaker 7: Well, actually the show started fifty six years ago. It
4:14
Speaker 7: is purely a promotion of the Kano City Lions Club.
4:19
Speaker 7: They work at all all our members have jobs to do.
4:23
Speaker 7: And the thing about our show is that one hundred
4:26
Speaker 7: percent of the net goes to charity. Nothing goes to
4:30
Speaker 7: administrative So when you do anything with the Lions Club,
4:34
Speaker 7: you can be assured that it's not the profits aren't
4:38
Speaker 7: eating up with administrative costs. And over the years, we've
4:41
Speaker 7: donated one point six million dollars to local charities and
4:46
Speaker 7: we have some of those that are kind of come
4:48
Speaker 7: to depend on us each year to help them with
4:52
Speaker 7: their budget. And then but we're nimble enough that if
4:54
Speaker 7: there's a flood, if there's food insecurity, that's really prime
5:01
Speaker 7: situation now that we can be nimble enough that we
5:03
Speaker 7: can help take care of some of those folks.
5:05
Speaker 4: Now, talk about the history of the Lions Club. How
5:07
Speaker 4: long has it been around?
5:08
Speaker 7: The Canall City Alliance Club was chartered in nineteen fifty
5:13
Speaker 7: fifty four. Okay I joined in nineteen seventy five and
5:18
Speaker 7: I'm a fifty year member.
5:19
Speaker 4: Well, congratulations on that, because Lions Club's always I don't.
5:22
Speaker 3: Know if I don't know if I want to hang
5:24
Speaker 3: my head on that or not.
5:25
Speaker 4: How's your membership, Ben, I mean, because here's the reason
5:28
Speaker 4: I bring that up. Because several of the civic organizations,
5:31
Speaker 4: whether it's Lions, Kawana's Rotary, whatever the case, maybe we
5:34
Speaker 4: have talked about over the years that the membership started
5:37
Speaker 4: to dwindle a little bit. Maybe it's not just as
5:39
Speaker 4: important or top of mind. But how's your membership?
5:41
Speaker 7: Well, when I joined fifty years ago, we had nearly
5:44
Speaker 7: one hundred members in our club. Now, COVID really hurt
5:48
Speaker 7: us as well as a lot of service organizations, and
5:52
Speaker 7: so we're down to thirty members now, okay, but you
5:56
Speaker 7: know it's an active club. Well that we do pick
5:59
Speaker 7: up tray.
6:00
Speaker 4: You can do a lot with thirty members. I mean,
6:02
Speaker 4: you really can if you got thirty active members, like
6:04
Speaker 4: you said.
6:04
Speaker 7: And we support a lot of different activities, you know,
6:07
Speaker 7: by volunteering as an organization, it would ring the bells
6:11
Speaker 7: and all kinds of things.
6:13
Speaker 4: Talk about some of the charities that I mean just
6:16
Speaker 4: mentioned a few that you've raised funds.
6:18
Speaker 7: Well, we aren't restricted just to Kanaw City activities. We
6:22
Speaker 7: are going to affect things throughout the valley, but in
6:25
Speaker 7: Kanas City itself. We donate six thousand dollars annually to
6:28
Speaker 7: the schools in Kanas City. Plus we support scholarships at
6:32
Speaker 7: the University Charleston and Capitol High School. We do project
6:37
Speaker 7: graduations all over the county. We work with West Virginia Health, Right,
6:42
Speaker 7: Salvation Army Mountain Mission, so there's.
6:45
Speaker 3: A whole we touch everybody.
6:48
Speaker 7: You would be a surprised that the organizations that we
6:52
Speaker 7: do support in the community.
6:53
Speaker 4: But Dave Alan Chowing five Any Live is brought to you
6:55
Speaker 4: in part by your hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds,
6:58
Speaker 4: the Selango Law Light that I returning to go Mark
7:01
Speaker 4: Ballpark November the twenty first through January the first gets
7:03
Speaker 4: you tickets in advance by visiting dB Lightthnight dot com.
7:07
Speaker 4: Please make sure that you get those tickets in advance.
7:09
Speaker 4: Definitely the way to go now if somebody is listening
7:11
Speaker 4: right now and they are a vendor is because it's
7:13
Speaker 4: too late to sign up.
7:14
Speaker 3: Or yes, we just closed it off yesterday.
7:17
Speaker 4: Okay, how many people just a ballpark come through the doors.
7:20
Speaker 3: Every year, we'll do about seven thousand.
7:22
Speaker 4: But seven thousand people over the two days.
7:24
Speaker 3: It's just two days.
7:26
Speaker 7: Years ago we were three days, but we found that
7:29
Speaker 7: Sundays weren't very productive right yet, so we cut it
7:31
Speaker 7: to two.
7:32
Speaker 4: Yeah. Sometimes, I mean Sundays used to be people would
7:34
Speaker 4: attend things like that after church and whatever. But it's
7:38
Speaker 4: got I guess different activities right and stuff down. Well,
7:41
Speaker 4: it's going to be a great time. It always is
7:43
Speaker 4: over there. Appreciate the tickets, by the way, I want
7:45
Speaker 4: to be checking it out this weekend. And you know,
7:48
Speaker 4: just kind of an advertising cliche John to say there
7:50
Speaker 4: is something for everybody, but there really is something for everybody.
7:53
Speaker 4: There is talk about some of your favorite things there.
7:56
Speaker 7: Well, you know, over the years, my wife and I
7:58
Speaker 7: have spent a lot of money. We've got enough stuff
8:03
Speaker 7: right now so we're uh, but we I buy a
8:07
Speaker 7: lot of the food products now and but you know,
8:10
Speaker 7: it's it's a great place to do if you want
8:14
Speaker 7: to refresh your holiday, ta corps to find new things
8:17
Speaker 7: to add. Also great place to buy something unique. Because
8:20
Speaker 7: I'm gonna say big box stores, you know you got
8:24
Speaker 7: that special person that you've bought enough sweaters or you
8:28
Speaker 7: have too much of the same thing, and something unique
8:31
Speaker 7: means something, and so we I think a lot of
8:35
Speaker 7: people enjoy doing that.
8:36
Speaker 4: Yeah, I've been saying people probably do their their Christmas
8:38
Speaker 4: shopping too.
8:39
Speaker 3: That's right.
8:40
Speaker 4: When to come up. Now you're doing something special. I understand.
8:42
Speaker 4: For the first and fifty, the.
8:44
Speaker 7: First two hundred we are this year's ago. We have
8:46
Speaker 7: we print up some counterfeit money. You get the first
8:51
Speaker 7: two hundred and fifty people through the door get a
8:53
Speaker 7: discount coupon. We're the purchase of an item in the
8:57
Speaker 7: show at a dollar off. And then also we we're
9:00
Speaker 7: doing a collection of food product with Mountain Mission. They'll
9:04
Speaker 7: have a box truck parked right at the front door
9:06
Speaker 7: into the convention hall, and if you bring a non
9:11
Speaker 7: perishable food product one or twenty, you'll get a discount
9:16
Speaker 7: coupon for admission into the show. The mission into the
9:18
Speaker 7: show is seven dollars for adults, two dollars for children
9:22
Speaker 7: twelve and under. And then also we have a group
9:24
Speaker 7: from the Appalachian Children's Choir that we'll be performing at
9:28
Speaker 7: one o'clock on Saturday.
9:30
Speaker 4: All right, this all sounds good and I love the
9:32
Speaker 4: fact that you're collecting nonperishable food items, because as you said,
9:35
Speaker 4: that's kind of I mean, the folks at Mountain Mission
9:38
Speaker 4: and these other organizations do great work anyway, but over
9:40
Speaker 4: the last couple of weeks with the government shut down
9:43
Speaker 4: and everything back, it's still going to take some time
9:45
Speaker 4: to get people back on there, even though the snap
9:47
Speaker 4: benefits have been restored to get people back on their
9:49
Speaker 4: feet again.
9:50
Speaker 7: And while we normally hold off until the first quarter
9:54
Speaker 7: of the year to make the bulk of our donations,
9:57
Speaker 7: we voted to accelerate our country annual contributions to Salvation Army,
10:02
Speaker 7: Mountain Mission, Meals on Wheels, the groups that are helping
10:08
Speaker 7: with food insecurities.
10:10
Speaker 4: It's all good, I mean, sounds great, and it's all
10:14
Speaker 4: happening this Friday and Saturday over the Connell Suma Convention Center.
10:17
Speaker 4: And we've got information available on you guys got social

Speaker 4: All right, Well, it sounds like a good time. It
10:39
Speaker 4: always is, and it's always very well attend That's amazing.
10:42
Speaker 4: I mean, I've had you on as long as I've
10:44
Speaker 4: been doing the show. I've had you on every year
10:46
Speaker 4: to talk about it. But I didn't realize that there
10:47
Speaker 4: were that many people that came through the door. Seven
10:49
Speaker 4: thousand people for two days.
10:51
Speaker 3: It's very popular.
10:52
Speaker 4: All right, John, we appreciate you. Stop and buy and

14:51
Speaker 13: That's not really my scene. But you know, uh well,
14:56
Speaker 13: it depends on how we're defining arts and crafts. I
14:58
Speaker 13: suppose there was a time when when my fine motor

15:04
Speaker 13: So I mean there's a little bit of that, a

15:07
Speaker 4: My past right, So I'm the least artistic person in
15:11
Speaker 4: the world. I mean literally, I mean, let's tell you
15:13
Speaker 4: what a bad artist I was, even as a kid
15:15
Speaker 4: growing up. Okay, how bad were you? I mean, I'm
15:18
Speaker 4: going to tell you how bad I was. When I
15:19
Speaker 4: was a kid and they would have art in school,
15:22
Speaker 4: like you know, at the end of the day, they
15:23
Speaker 4: would my art was so bad. How bad was that?
15:26
Speaker 4: I'm going to tell you it was so bad that
15:29
Speaker 4: the my elementary school teacher would let me read encyclopedias
15:34
Speaker 4: instead and that's what when it came to when it
15:37
Speaker 4: came to Art's time, that's what. That's what Little David
15:41
Speaker 4: got up and went over and got the a encyclopedia
15:44
Speaker 4: and read it. Now it served me well because I
15:48
Speaker 4: have a head full of you know nothing right now,
15:50
Speaker 4: and I can answer a lot of questions on Jeopardy,
15:52
Speaker 4: but don't ask me to draw anything. As you say,
15:54
Speaker 4: you know all the countries in Africa because you studied
15:57
Speaker 4: that A. Yeah, I only had the one I ever made.
16:00
Speaker 13: It to the other well, that was the one they
16:01
Speaker 13: got free. That was the that was that was the
16:03
Speaker 13: first hits free version of encyclopedias. And yeah, all right,
16:08
Speaker 13: so we're ready to drop some turkeys on Thursday, talk
16:10
Speaker 13: about yes please, So from seven in the morning until
16:12
Speaker 13: six in the evening here at eleven eleven Virginia Street East.
16:16
Speaker 13: That's if you're a GPS plugger in or if you
16:17
Speaker 13: need a cross street Leon Sullivan and then you know,
16:20
Speaker 13: make the left onto Virginia Street because that's the only
16:22
Speaker 13: way you can go their one way streets right next
16:24
Speaker 13: to First Prez whatever whatever you need as a down
16:27
Speaker 13: the street from Charleston Catholic. Yes, however, however, you need
16:30
Speaker 13: to get here. We want to see you between seven
16:32
Speaker 13: and six on Thursday. Loop through our parking lot and
16:36
Speaker 13: make a donation to Union Mission. We are specifically looking
16:39
Speaker 13: for frozen turkeys. It's the hardest thing to get donated
16:43
Speaker 13: for the holiday meal because it's the most expensive. It
16:46
Speaker 13: takes up the most space, so storing it is difficult,
16:48
Speaker 13: and it's perishable. It's not like you can you know,
16:51
Speaker 13: you can stack it in the corner of the garage
16:53
Speaker 13: and have it be safe. So working with Jason at
16:56
Speaker 13: Union Mission, we know that the Thursday before thanks Giving
17:00
Speaker 13: is the sweet spot on when we get those turkeys
17:02
Speaker 13: and can get them distributed to families in needs so
17:05
Speaker 13: that they can all have or at least as many
17:07
Speaker 13: of them as we can support, can have a festive
17:10
Speaker 13: holiday meal. I believe every family deserves that. And cash
17:14
Speaker 13: and check donations also warmly accepted. You'd be amazed at
17:18
Speaker 13: how far they can stretch the green at Union Mission.
17:22
Speaker 13: So Appalachian Power Company is on board. Thank you to
17:24
Speaker 13: APCO for powering this whole thing this year. And I
17:28
Speaker 13: will be in a in a turkey, so there will
17:30
Speaker 13: be a six foot turkey out on six foot one
17:33
Speaker 13: inch Turkey out on the parking lot.
17:35
Speaker 4: And we have some other great sponsors. I know Accent
17:37
Speaker 4: construction is part of Serve pro Appleachia Power. I mean,
17:41
Speaker 4: you know there are some other We can't do anything
17:43
Speaker 4: without our sponsors, but more importantly without our listeners. Yes,
17:46
Speaker 4: because I've said time and time and time again, Rob,
17:50
Speaker 4: we have the greatest listeners in the world. If you
17:53
Speaker 4: don't think we have the greatest listeners in the world,
17:54
Speaker 4: let me tell you a quick story. On Friday, on
17:58
Speaker 4: the Adopt Me Please ped of the Week, I had
18:00
Speaker 4: a pig by the name of Amy swinehouse all right
18:03
Speaker 4: later in the show because the pig's owner had died, okay,
18:07
Speaker 4: and so they're trying to find a home for this pig.
18:10
Speaker 4: Angie and the fine folks up at the animal shelter said,
18:12
Speaker 4: we're not really in the pig business here. When I
18:16
Speaker 4: text Angie during the midday show and I said, hey,
18:19
Speaker 4: how are we doing? There were people waiting up there
18:21
Speaker 4: to adopt Amy's swinehouse that heard it on this show.
18:25
Speaker 4: They were waiting when they opened the doors up there.
18:27
Speaker 4: If only they'd had an Anthony Porkins to go with it,
18:30
Speaker 4: I think we would have so I say that to
18:33
Speaker 4: say we have the greatest listeners in the world, and
18:34
Speaker 4: they come through every year we do West Virginians take
18:38
Speaker 4: care of West Virginians. And this is a particularly tough
18:42
Speaker 4: year in addition to all of the regular things. And
18:45
Speaker 4: I can quote one in six West Virginian's food insecure,
18:49
Speaker 4: one in four children food insecure. But with the government
18:53
Speaker 4: shut down and everybody feels some kind of way about
18:56
Speaker 4: that and politics free zone on our show down the Hall,
19:01
Speaker 4: but who no matter whose fault you think that shut
19:03
Speaker 4: down is, it made things even.
19:07
Speaker 13: More difficult for folks who were already in need, and
19:10
Speaker 13: getting things moving again has been tough. So it's an
19:13
Speaker 13: even tougher year. This is our third annual and it
19:15
Speaker 13: may be the most important year that we have done this.
19:17
Speaker 4: And again the folks at Union Mission were on site.
19:20
Speaker 4: They'll be out here with the with the freezer truck
19:23
Speaker 4: ready to go. You don't even have to get out
19:25
Speaker 4: of your car. That's one of the great things about this.
19:27
Speaker 13: And it's going to be a decent day on Thursday,
19:29
Speaker 13: cloudy in sixty two. I'm actually worried about being a
19:32
Speaker 13: little warm in that giant turkey suit that I'm going
19:34
Speaker 13: to be in but first world problems. Yeah, we just
19:38
Speaker 13: hand us the turkey through the window, or if we
19:41
Speaker 13: got ten of them in the back, pop the hatch.
19:44
Speaker 4: We will grab them for you. You do not have
19:46
Speaker 4: to lift a finger. And there were some I got
19:49
Speaker 4: a text last week and I don't I know Pigley
19:53
Speaker 4: Wigglely is.
19:54
Speaker 9: Doing some sales.
19:55
Speaker 13: I know that kroger has had some sales or I'm sorry,
19:58
Speaker 13: we properly call it here Virginia.
20:00
Speaker 4: The Kroger's is.
20:03
Speaker 13: Doing some sales. So wherever you get your turkey is fantastic.
20:08
Speaker 13: Even better is tho Casher check donations because of the
20:11
Speaker 13: buying power in bulk that Union mission has. But I
20:15
Speaker 13: know there are some people that need something tangible. They
20:17
Speaker 13: have to have something to hand over, and that's why
20:20
Speaker 13: a frozen turkey is perfect.
20:22
Speaker 4: Talking to Rob Brioll from Superstar Country Kuble. Yes, our
20:24
Speaker 4: turkey drop starts at seven a m. On Thursday morning
20:27
Speaker 4: to Dave Allen Show on five vide Line. Brought to
20:29
Speaker 4: you in part by Bridge Valley Community of Technical College.
20:32
Speaker 4: Insurance agents are in demand in the States and across
20:34
Speaker 4: the country. Bridge Valley can help you take that first step.
20:36
Speaker 4: Their insurance pre Sales Licenser course prepared to to sit
20:39
Speaker 4: for the state required Property and Casualty Insurance Licensured exam
20:42

20:45
Speaker 4: dot edu is the website Bridge Valley dot eedu Bridge
20:47
Speaker 4: Valley Community and Technical College. Your career starts here. And
20:50
Speaker 4: and I want to mention that again about the buying
20:52
Speaker 4: power that they have. Again, I mean, radio people, because
20:57
Speaker 4: of our pay are are good at stretching dollars. We
21:02
Speaker 4: ain't got nothing on these folks though, Rob No.
21:04
Speaker 13: It's really amazing what Jason and everybody on down at
21:09
Speaker 13: Union Mission can do with a dollar feeding Like what
21:13
Speaker 13: I want to say, it's like twelve meals. But you know,
21:18
Speaker 13: I don't want to be wrong. It's something almost absurd
21:22
Speaker 13: like that that they can do with the buying power.
21:25
Speaker 13: And I know that there are folks who have their
21:27
Speaker 13: reservations because of past scandals with other organizations, and it's
21:32
Speaker 13: not like that over at Union Mission. Believe me, I've
21:34
Speaker 13: been over there and met the folks and everything is
21:36
Speaker 13: on the up and up, so you can feel confident
21:40
Speaker 13: whether it's cash or a check donation.
21:42
Speaker 4: That you want to make. I found that text that
21:44
Speaker 4: actually came through on Thursday when you were here, And
21:46
Speaker 4: I don't know whether this is still an effect or not,
21:49
Speaker 4: but the text on Thursday so that Kroger frozen holed
21:52
Speaker 4: turkeys were on sale for seventy nine cents a pound,
21:55
Speaker 4: and that sale started last week, and the textra said
21:58
Speaker 4: not sure if the twenty five dollars purchase it quiet.
22:00
Speaker 4: I know it's ninety nine cents per pound for butter balls,
22:02
Speaker 4: Pigley Wiggly which you mentioned, twenty nine cents a pound
22:05
Speaker 4: with a fifty dollars purchase. That was as of last Thursday.
22:07
Speaker 4: I'm not sure if those prices were still in the fact,
22:09
Speaker 4: but bottom line is most grocers will put them on
22:11
Speaker 4: sale anyway as we get closer to Thanksgiving because they
22:13
Speaker 4: don't have a hard time, you know, moving them at
22:16
Speaker 4: that time. So they're gonna be specially priced probably wherever
22:18
Speaker 4: you go.
22:19
Speaker 13: And if you want to do a donation like seventy
22:21
Speaker 13: nine cents per pound, I come in about two, twenty two,
22:23
Speaker 13: twenty one, whatever it takes. So when you see me
22:25
Speaker 13: in the turkey costume, you want to donate seventy nine
22:28
Speaker 13: cents a pound, I'm not going to map that out
22:30
Speaker 13: for you by one hundred and ninety bucks.
22:33
Speaker 4: All right, all right, just throwing that out there, seven
22:35
Speaker 4: am till six pm. On our part, we're going to
22:37
Speaker 4: have you on each day to talk about it. And again,
22:40
Speaker 4: the weather not horrible, because we've done some things in
22:43
Speaker 4: the outdoors when we battled rain and snow and ice,
22:46
Speaker 4: and but we do a couple of things like this
22:49
Speaker 4: a year, and our listeners always always step up. And
22:53
Speaker 4: it always amazes me too. And I'll say this is
22:56
Speaker 4: as politely as I can. When you see people that
22:59
Speaker 4: pull up on our parking lot and you just you know,
23:03
Speaker 4: maybe they don't have the newest car in the world.
23:05
Speaker 4: It's looks like, you know, we've all seen a duct
23:07
Speaker 4: tape bumper. It's a radio car basically. It's you know,
23:11
Speaker 4: you see them pull up. But those are the people
23:13
Speaker 4: that always donate.
23:14
Speaker 13: I you know, I grew up in one of those
23:15
Speaker 13: families where first thing on Thanksgiving morning we went out
23:18
Speaker 13: and we went turkey hunting because if we didn't get one,
23:20
Speaker 13: we weren't going to have a turkey.
23:21
Speaker 4: So I come by this honestly, and I.
23:24
Speaker 13: Know that those are the folks maybe who are who
23:27
Speaker 13: are most emotionally invested in feeding folks in need, and.
23:31
Speaker 4: The turkey is very important because you can't really it's
23:34
Speaker 4: kind of hard to kind of hard to go out
23:37
Speaker 4: green bean cast role hunting on Thanksgiving morning.
23:39
Speaker 13: Yes, although Nancy's green gunk, we still don't know where
23:43
Speaker 13: that comes from.
23:44
Speaker 4: Am I the only person in the world whereb that
23:46
Speaker 4: loves green bean castrole? I really like. I don't think
23:48
Speaker 4: you're the only one. I think it depends on what
23:50
Speaker 4: goes in it.
23:50
Speaker 13: I mean, if it doesn't have the cream mushroom soup
23:52
Speaker 13: and the onion straws over the top, I want no
23:54
Speaker 13: part of it.
23:55
Speaker 4: I there's not any part of the Thanksgiving meal I
23:57
Speaker 4: don't like though. I mean, that's that's the thing. Yeah,
24:00
Speaker 4: you want to what was your favorite part of the show?
24:02
Speaker 4: And yes, exactly, exactly like a good Statler and Waldorf
24:06
Speaker 4: on my way out the sport? Do you know you
24:08
Speaker 4: were talking? I throw this in here because anytime you've
24:10
Speaker 4: met Rob and I together, Lord knows what's gonna happen.
24:12
Speaker 4: There's a reason you have a show again, exactly. But
24:16
Speaker 4: Johnny Carson had this theory that there was only one
24:19
Speaker 4: fruitcake in the world and it just kept getting passed
24:21
Speaker 4: from person to person. Yes, I actually and I believe
24:24
Speaker 4: that fruitcake was less tra Mannix. Oh no wait, I'm sorry,
24:26
Speaker 4: that was Dick Cabot. Never mind, I actually like fruitcake too.
24:29
Speaker 9: You're the one.
24:30
Speaker 4: It's the one. You're the one, all right, Rob Real,
24:33
Speaker 4: our sister station ninety six one KWS. But again, this
24:36
Speaker 4: is kind of your baby. But we're all going to
24:37
Speaker 4: be out there in the mountain to beat V one
24:39
Speaker 4: hundred one. I'll be out there. You're gonna be hearing
24:41
Speaker 4: a lot about it on all of our stations. And
24:43
Speaker 4: when we say that little the little tones at the
24:45
Speaker 4: top of the hour, that sound like happy birthday. Ever
24:47
Speaker 4: since BT Brian Thompson pointed that out to me, I
24:51
Speaker 4: cannot get that out of my head. The first four
24:53
Speaker 4: notes of Country Roads, It's almost okay to me, it's
24:57
Speaker 4: happy birthday. Okay, So you didn't do well music.
25:00
Speaker 13: Class as well as our Now what you're saying, I
25:02
Speaker 13: played the radio. He was reading the z Encyclopedia and
25:06
Speaker 13: music class. But my point is is that we are
25:08
Speaker 13: proud to live here too. That's why we do these.
25:10
Speaker 4: Yes, Rob Real Superstar Country KWS seven am six pm

28:19
Speaker 4: You're still a veteran. Rob Real who we had in
28:22
Speaker 4: here earlier is is a marine, and he likes to
28:25
Speaker 4: correct people who say you're a former marine because you're
28:28
Speaker 4: never a former marine. You're always a marine.
28:29
Speaker 6: Is that's the gentleman?
28:30
Speaker 4: Yes here, yeah, okay, Morning morning show hosts ninety six
28:34
Speaker 4: to one KWS. We're doing our turkey drop on Thursday,
28:38
Speaker 4: seven am to six pm. So people want to drive
28:40
Speaker 4: through a parking lot and donate a turkey to us.
28:43
Speaker 4: We're giving it to working with folks at Union Mission
28:45
Speaker 4: on that seven am to six pm.
28:47
Speaker 5: What is.
28:52
Speaker 6: What I wonder when he was in the Marine Corps?
28:54
Speaker 6: Did he say, I don't.
28:56
Speaker 4: He's a couple of years younger than I am, and
28:58
Speaker 4: I'm fifty five and Rob's like few the one fifty two,
29:01
Speaker 4: So I don't. So he would have been, you know,
29:03
Speaker 4: I'm going to guests late eighties, early early to mid nineties.
29:07
Speaker 6: Yeah, so he ended up seems like yesterday and it
29:10
Speaker 6: was actually fifty five years ago. I mean, it's unbelievable.
29:16
Speaker 4: All right. So I am holding in my hand the book.
29:20
Speaker 4: When you started talking about this thing? What how long?
29:23
Speaker 4: When did you start actually working on the book a
29:26
Speaker 4: year ago? Okay? Because I remember having you on the
29:29
Speaker 4: show a few years ago and I asked you about
29:32
Speaker 4: writing a book. I think somebody even texted and said
29:35
Speaker 4: you should write a book, and you told me then
29:36
Speaker 4: you were you were thoroughly against it.
29:39
Speaker 6: But was thoroughly against I just didn't. I don't want
29:41
Speaker 6: to hurt people, and I didn't hurt anybody in that book.
29:45
Speaker 6: I didn't. I mean, I don't think I did.
29:47
Speaker 4: Okay.
29:48
Speaker 6: I told some personal stories and some conflicts I had
29:52
Speaker 6: within my family. And there's nobody I heard that's alive.
29:59
Speaker 8: U.
30:01
Speaker 6: But it's Harry MacLean, the guy who wrote in Broad Daylight.
30:15
Speaker 6: He said from nineteen seventy four, when you get to
30:18
Speaker 6: nineteen seventy four, that's riding High, that's that chapter. When
30:24
Speaker 6: you get from there to nineteen eighty four, it is
30:29
Speaker 6: a puzzle to figure out he went from that to
30:33
Speaker 6: be in sheriff for Connall County. It's just I look
30:38
Speaker 6: back on it, I can't believe it, you know.
30:41
Speaker 4: And what's interesting to me. And I'm reading from the
30:43
Speaker 4: back of the book here and a lot of people
30:46
Speaker 4: may not know this about you. People that have been
30:48
Speaker 4: around Charleston and a wild man. I know you, but
30:50
Speaker 4: I mean may not know this. But you were born
30:52
Speaker 4: you say born into a world of privilege, yearning for authenticity.
30:58
Speaker 4: Explain that, well, I.
31:07
Speaker 6: I would go to school and people would tell me,
31:10
Speaker 6: you know, your parents have so much money. Well they
31:13
Speaker 6: never showed me any of it.
31:16
Speaker 2: And I.
31:24
Speaker 6: When you're from over the part where the old Clark
31:27
Speaker 6: House was, you know where the murder was, there weren't
31:30
Speaker 6: a lot of kids over there, and so there wasn't
31:35
Speaker 6: I wanted to be over on Oakmont Road where the
31:38
Speaker 6: baseball was, where the baseball field was. But I don't,
31:47
Speaker 6: I mean, I don't know. I don't know how to
31:49
Speaker 6: quite answer that. I know that my life changed. There's
31:55
Speaker 6: a chapter in there called Richard Butler, and he's around
32:02
Speaker 6: and he we would hang around a pool room called
32:08
Speaker 6: the Hub. There was he and I and George Jarrett
32:14
Speaker 6: and none of us had a pot or a window,
32:17
Speaker 6: I mean nothing. And a guy came in there one
32:21
Speaker 6: night named Jay Sugarman. J Sugarman went to Morris Harvey
32:28
Speaker 6: and lived at the Worthy Hotel.
32:30
Speaker 4: Which is now the University of Charleston, not the hotel,
32:33
Speaker 4: I mean Moore's Harvey.
32:34
Speaker 6: Yeah, the hotel has been torn down, and it was
32:37
Speaker 6: over there next to the Quarter Diner, and he worked
32:42
Speaker 6: up there at the Roaring twenties, and that's when liquor
32:48
Speaker 6: was illegal. That's when Charleston really thrived. When booze was illegal,
32:53
Speaker 6: Charleston rocked and he said he needed somebody to wash
33:00
Speaker 6: glasses for ten dollars a night. Richard jumped at it
33:05
Speaker 6: and then he learned a ten bar and then George
33:08
Speaker 6: went up there.
33:11
Speaker 3: And he.
33:12
Speaker 6: Started washing glasses. Well, I mean I looked fourteen years old.
33:17
Speaker 6: I couldn't go up there. So I went back to
33:20
Speaker 6: the Sterling. I had worked through the Sterling through the summer,
33:25
Speaker 6: and I went back to the Sterling and worked there
33:28
Speaker 6: until I got out of high school. And worked every
33:32
Speaker 6: single job in the restaurant plus the main line cook
33:37
Speaker 6: and I'm on the weekends.
33:40
Speaker 7: And it was.
33:43
Speaker 6: So I had money to walk around on and we
33:46
Speaker 6: all had money. Then we all have None of us
33:48
Speaker 6: had cars. I mean I had a car, but I
33:51
Speaker 6: didn't have a driver's license. And I guess that's when
33:59
Speaker 6: I fell offense. When I had a job. And then
34:04
Speaker 6: I started working at the filling station at the same
34:07
Speaker 6: time I was working Sterling. And then I built a
34:11
Speaker 6: race car and raced it one trophies with it. Guy
34:16
Speaker 6: got killed running me with it.
34:18
Speaker 4: You've told that, You've told me that story before. It's
34:20
Speaker 4: a tract. And cars are always have always been very
34:23
Speaker 4: important to you.
34:25
Speaker 6: I love old cars.
34:28
Speaker 4: Do you have what do you have now?
34:29
Speaker 6: That Cadillac? And then I have, uh, well, here's a
34:32
Speaker 6: Cadillac fifty nine. And then I have the Nomad which
34:37
Speaker 6: I raced, which I'm redoing. It's gonna cost It'll cost
34:43
Speaker 6: two hundred thousand dollars by the time I get done
34:46
Speaker 6: with that car. It's everything in it. It's set for
34:51
Speaker 6: forty years, set in my brother's garage. He became somewhat
34:57
Speaker 6: of a hoarder.
34:58
Speaker 4: Yeah, you to say, and none of us had come from,
35:03
Speaker 4: you know, the world of leave it to Beaver. Okay,
35:05
Speaker 4: we've all got back. But you know, I think people
35:10
Speaker 4: that don't know your story, Danny, might be a little
35:13
Speaker 4: surprised that you know, you didn't. And I touched on
35:17
Speaker 4: this earlier. You can come from exactly the best family.
35:20
Speaker 4: You came from a family with money, but money, money,
35:23
Speaker 4: money ain't everything.
35:24
Speaker 6: It's in the book.
35:25
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's all in the book.
35:26
Speaker 6: It's all in the book.
35:29
Speaker 4: Was it painful for you to write some of those things? Yes,
35:36
Speaker 4: I mean I just always wonder when people. And I
35:38
Speaker 4: had had a bunch of musicians, you know, the guys
35:40
Speaker 4: from am of Steel Band on the show Friday. And
35:42
Speaker 4: always like to ask people that write music or that
35:45
Speaker 4: write anything, what your writing process like? You know, you
35:48
Speaker 4: sit down, I'm gonna write so much today you just
35:51
Speaker 4: walk around with a notepad or record or your phone
35:53
Speaker 4: and you make notes in it or whatever. Did you
35:55
Speaker 4: take time when you actually just sat down and just
35:58
Speaker 4: wrote no charge.
36:00
Speaker 6: Well, there's a chapter in there because she kept hitting me.
36:07
Speaker 6: I wrote that one years ago. I just wrote it,
36:11
Speaker 6: and uh so that's in the book. That was painful.
36:20
Speaker 6: And my mother and I had a very tense competitive
36:30
Speaker 6: relationship and we got along the last ten years of
36:39
Speaker 6: her life. And I'll tell you a story. This is
36:48
Speaker 6: one of my favorite stories. It's in the book. There
36:52
Speaker 6: was a house up on Norwood Road. This is in
36:55
Speaker 6: the book twenty seven Norwood Road. And my mother wanted
37:01
Speaker 6: me to buy the house, you know, and I said,
37:07
Speaker 6: I looked at the house. It was a little house,
37:09
Speaker 6: two bedroom, and I thought they won one hundred and
37:13
Speaker 6: twenty five, one hundred and twenty nine whatever it was.
37:18
Speaker 6: I paid one hundred quarter for it. But she said
37:23
Speaker 6: you should buy this house. And I know what she
37:26
Speaker 6: wanted to do. She wanted to patch up things, and
37:29
Speaker 6: she wanted to be around the grandson, because Zach at
37:32
Speaker 6: that time was a really sweet kid.
37:36
Speaker 8: And so.
37:40
Speaker 6: I called Frank Veltry and I said, come up here
37:44
Speaker 6: and look at this house with me. And he looked
37:47
Speaker 6: at the house. He says, the property, the lot's worth
37:52
Speaker 6: one hundred and twenty five thousand, and the house is free. Well,
37:56
Speaker 6: my dad had just died and he left me on
38:00
Speaker 6: one thousand dollars, and plus I had some more money,
38:03
Speaker 6: so I just wrote a check for the house and
38:05
Speaker 6: moved in it. So she came in the house with me,
38:10
Speaker 6: and she looked at this and that and the other,
38:13
Speaker 6: and she's going to change this and that and the other.
38:16
Speaker 6: And then she walked in the living room and there
38:21
Speaker 6: was a Sears fan in the living room, those little
38:25
Speaker 6: drop lights, you know what I'm talking about, little droopy lights.
38:29
Speaker 6: And she says, and I want rid of that GD
38:32
Speaker 6: fan like that. And I knew that if I was
38:37
Speaker 6: going to have to stop her anywhere, I was gonna
38:40
Speaker 6: have to stop her at the fan. So I waited
38:45
Speaker 6: till she left, and I went down to her house.
38:50
Speaker 6: I said, Mom, you don't have to worry about anything
38:53
Speaker 6: inside the house. She had a guy that worked for
38:56
Speaker 6: that did landscaping. I said, do you want to do
38:59
Speaker 6: the outside and put box shruved around the house. So
39:04
Speaker 6: I kept her out of the house. And she didn't
39:08
Speaker 6: like it at all, and for the rest of her life.
39:11
Speaker 6: She lived for three more years. She drive a big
39:14
Speaker 6: Lincoln and had a big plate glass window there. I
39:17
Speaker 6: never closed the drapes. I didn't have to. I didn't
39:20
Speaker 6: get dressed there. It was a living room and she's
39:23
Speaker 6: looking their see if the fam was still there.
39:26
Speaker 4: Fan was kind of symbolic.
39:28
Speaker 6: I guess, well, if somebody is encroaching on your turf,
39:35
Speaker 6: if somebody is being codependent with you, if they're violating
39:41
Speaker 6: your space, find out where the fan is.

40:01
Speaker 4: because what you don't know can't hurt you, what what
40:05
Speaker 4: point of your life did your mother past? How old
40:06
Speaker 4: were you or what time was it I was or
40:09
Speaker 4: what were you in life? Is what I'm trying to say.
40:11
Speaker 6: It was forty eight and I was doing I was
40:19
Speaker 6: working State.
40:20
Speaker 2: I was.
40:22
Speaker 6: Working at the working at Transportation, which was a big mistake.
40:29
Speaker 4: I was gonna say.
40:30
Speaker 6: I didn't as long as I've known it, I didn't
40:32
Speaker 6: know that you worked at WAS. I had Brent Walker job, okay,
40:35
Speaker 6: and now I didn't know that. And then Sam Banasso
40:38
Speaker 6: needed to get confirmed. And as soon as I got
40:41
Speaker 6: him confirmed, I was out of there and I went back.
40:44
Speaker 4: Up to.
40:46
Speaker 6: Up on the hill to another the other radio things
40:50
Speaker 6: down the dial right, and I worked there for about
40:53
Speaker 6: a year and then they decided they were going to
40:57
Speaker 6: change things.
40:59
Speaker 4: But here you are still on the radio.
41:02
Speaker 9: Yeah.
41:03
Speaker 6: I like the radio.
41:04
Speaker 4: Well you're good at it.
41:05
Speaker 6: Well, I like it. I mean, I like radio. I
41:08
Speaker 6: like listening to it.
41:10
Speaker 4: You know, there was a I don't know if you
41:11
Speaker 4: caught it, but over the weekend, I think it was
41:14
Speaker 4: on Saturday on the CBS Sunday Morning News. I just
41:18
Speaker 4: happen to have it on on that channel, and they
41:21
Speaker 4: were talking about the resurgence of radio, and I told
41:24
Speaker 4: my wife and so I got to watch it and
41:26
Speaker 4: it was all about serious satellite though, which is still.
41:31
Speaker 4: I mean, like I'm a serious satellite subscriber mainly when
41:33
Speaker 4: I drove a lot.
41:34
Speaker 6: But it does it doesn't not do this well, it's
41:38
Speaker 6: you know, it does not do this though.
41:41
Speaker 4: Agree, I mean, they're still and.
41:43
Speaker 6: I use it when I'm traveling, when I'm on the road.
41:48
Speaker 6: I don't use it in town here. Yeah. But also
41:52
Speaker 6: forget serious or radio. What about all the podcasts that
41:56
Speaker 6: are out there.
41:57
Speaker 4: Yeah, there's there's a lot. Yeah, there's a lot of
42:01
Speaker 4: podcasts out there right now. They're really really there, but
42:03
Speaker 4: they're I mean, look, people have been saying for years
42:06
Speaker 4: that radio was was dying, and it's not. What is
42:11
Speaker 4: changing is what has been changing over the last twenty
42:14
Speaker 4: years is the way that people consume radio. You know,
42:18
Speaker 4: I mean shows like this, you know, whether it's news
42:21
Speaker 4: or sports or whatever. You know, half your listeners aren't
42:24
Speaker 4: listening live, they're listening later.
42:26
Speaker 2: You know.
42:27
Speaker 4: That's why it's so important that you have an online presence.
42:29
Speaker 12: And this I didn't know that.
42:30
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, probably fifty percent. I don't base that on
42:34
Speaker 4: anything other than just talking to people. Fifty percent of
42:36
Speaker 4: the people that listen to the show don't listen to
42:38
Speaker 4: it live. They're listening to it later. I've got people
42:41
Speaker 4: that say, I listen to your show in the evening
42:43
Speaker 4: when I'm working out, I listen to whatever. And the
42:47
Speaker 4: way that people are actually listening to when they do
42:49
Speaker 4: listen live, they're listening on apps. They're listening, you know,
42:52
Speaker 4: on their iPad or you know. But there's something to
42:55
Speaker 4: be said for radio. I had to ask you one
42:57
Speaker 4: thing before we go to break here. I just let
43:00
Speaker 4: me feel the bucket. I had not seen the book
43:01
Speaker 4: at all till you brought it in to me this morning.
43:03
Speaker 4: Thank you for the autograph, by the way, and I'm
43:05
Speaker 4: looking through it here, and you had it was this
43:08
Speaker 4: a I guess a poster or some sort of an
43:12
Speaker 4: advertisement when you run for office? And said, the stud
43:14
Speaker 4: with handcuffs? No, no, no, that was that was a
43:17
Speaker 4: calendar that okay, the stud with handcuffs. Kenny Bath was
43:21
Speaker 4: in that calendar. Okay.
43:23
Speaker 6: We had a MI was mister June, and I had
43:27
Speaker 6: my Cadillac. I had my seventy eight Cadillac, and I
43:32
Speaker 6: was there with my short and my Panama had on
43:35
Speaker 6: and I was a shirt and some I think I
43:39
Speaker 6: had a pistol with a whole stirs and handcuffs and
43:43
Speaker 6: it was it was a joke.
43:45
Speaker 4: Okay, I'm gonna say you didn't seriously refer to yourself
43:47
Speaker 4: as a stud with handcuffs?
43:49
Speaker 6: Did they did?
43:49
Speaker 8: I did?
43:51
Speaker 9: Danny Jones is here.

46:20
Speaker 4: from ten, text says Dave. I listened to Mayor Danny
46:25
Speaker 4: and Pete Thaw every morning as I was on the road.
46:27
Speaker 4: Always enjoyed his program. Thanks, I can hear you fine.
46:34
Speaker 4: You know we're not taking phone calls at all. I
46:36
Speaker 4: got it, Okay, all right, all right, all right? So
46:38
Speaker 4: what about that? The text had listened to Mayor Danny
46:40
Speaker 4: Pete Thaw every morning as I was on the road,
46:42
Speaker 4: always enjoyed the program.
46:44
Speaker 6: Yeah, Pete would be on with me. He's right, out
46:47
Speaker 6: of the school board. Crazy.
46:50
Speaker 4: But I didn't know mister Thal but I remember reading.
46:52
Speaker 6: The well Pete was at one time he was a
46:58
Speaker 6: big Democrat. He was into the Rockefeller campaign in seventy
47:05
Speaker 6: two and seventy six, and then you got to be
47:10
Speaker 6: friends with Governor Moore, and Governor Moore gave him that
47:14
Speaker 6: job at the at the racetrack and then guests and
47:20
Speaker 6: got the job and cut his salary in half. Maybe
47:25
Speaker 6: he's trying to get rid of him. I don't know.
47:27
Speaker 4: So the book is officially out now, came out what Thursday,
47:30
Speaker 4: Friday last week? Okay, And it's available out Taylor Books, right, yes,
47:34
Speaker 4: all right, all right, and it will be available I
47:38
Speaker 4: guess wherever you know you purchase books, right, I mean Taylor,
47:41
Speaker 4: Tay Taylor.
47:42
Speaker 6: Is it okay for right now?
47:43
Speaker 4: Right now? And we had somebody to ask about an
47:45
Speaker 4: e book, and you know you explained that that once
47:48
Speaker 4: before that. You just think because you'd want to have
47:50
Speaker 4: all these people, you know, it would involve too many
47:53
Speaker 4: voices in your opinion.
47:55
Speaker 6: I just don't see that happening. This is a local book.
48:00
Speaker 6: This is not a book somebody and the only person
48:03
Speaker 6: in Denver, Colorado is going to read it. Harry MacLean,
48:07
Speaker 6: And that's the guy who wrote in the Borah Daylight,
48:09
Speaker 6: the book about Skidmore. He's actually read a unedited copy
48:17
Speaker 6: of it. He's already read it. But I'm going to
48:19
Speaker 6: send him a book and uh and see what he thinks,
48:25
Speaker 6: and you know, see what possibilities it has. But he
48:34
Speaker 6: was really he was really stymmied by the fact that
48:38
Speaker 6: I went from and you'll read about had called riding
48:43
Speaker 6: high from then until being chaff of the county. How
48:47
Speaker 6: could you go from one to the other, you know?
48:51
Speaker 6: And that's when I worked at the Daniel Boone's the
48:54
Speaker 6: best job ever had in my life. It is what
48:57
Speaker 6: I questioned, the best job I ever had in my life.
49:00
Speaker 6: Now I couldn't have kept it because number one, they closed.
49:04
Speaker 6: But number two, it's a job for a young man.

49:50
Speaker 4: Two o'clock this Saturday. Yeah, you and you were actually
49:53
Speaker 4: I think concerned when I had you on before that
49:56
Speaker 4: no one wanted the book, Danny. This is all anybody
49:58
Speaker 4: has been talking about to me, uh for the last
50:02
Speaker 4: I mean today's talking to a friend of mine who
50:04
Speaker 4: I have a coffee with on on Monday mornings, and uh,
50:08
Speaker 4: he said, is Danny's book out yet? And I said,
50:11
Speaker 4: I'll have it and uh, and we'll make sure that
50:13
Speaker 4: you get copies. Well, people, people are interested in that.
50:15
Speaker 6: It would have been I'm glad Charlie did it because
50:20
Speaker 6: if I'd have done, it had been a lot darker
50:25
Speaker 6: because with me, there's I mean, I'm pretty transparent. And
50:30
Speaker 6: are you sure you want to put that in there. No,
50:33
Speaker 6: maybe I.
50:33
Speaker 4: Should yeh know, well, it's good I think sometimes to
50:35
Speaker 4: have a have that friend, you know, somebody a buffer,
50:39
Speaker 4: somebody that is well, Robby shouldn't do that.
50:41
Speaker 6: But it was his idea, uh huh, that to write
50:43
Speaker 6: the book. You mean yeah, I mean he called me.
50:46
Speaker 6: You know, he'd done those two bucks on the Clark
50:48
Speaker 6: murderer and on the house I grew up in. And
50:52
Speaker 6: he thinks it's kind of neat that I'm the only
50:54
Speaker 6: four term mayor in Charleston's history. I don't know if
50:58
Speaker 6: this mayor is gonna do it. I know he's going
51:00
Speaker 6: to do three terms. I told her, I said, do
51:05
Speaker 6: seven terms. Just make sure you want to be there,
51:09
Speaker 6: because my last term I shouldn't have been there.
51:13
Speaker 4: I mean, what do you say that.
51:14
Speaker 6: I was just tired of it, and you could tell it.
51:18
Speaker 4: We got to close it out here. But what was
51:20
Speaker 4: it you were tired of? I know, the whole thing
51:22
Speaker 4: with Needles really took a lot out of it. Oh
51:24
Speaker 4: and you spent a lot of time talking about it
51:26
Speaker 4: in the book, But go ahead.
51:27
Speaker 6: Yeah, the needles. And of course we did the convention center,
51:31
Speaker 6: but a lot of the people that worked there and
51:34
Speaker 6: the council turned on me. People that worked there, a
51:39
Speaker 6: lot of them, it shouldn't have been, were disloyal and
51:47
Speaker 6: and the higher, the higher they got paid, the worse
51:50
Speaker 6: it was. And I'm just I was glad to get
51:54
Speaker 6: out of there.
51:55
