Latest / The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon / Twins over the Cubs, Brewers are hot, Big 12 Football win Totals, Eliot Clough talks Hawkeyes
Transcript
- 0:09Hi, good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon on
- 0:12a Wednesday. Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 0:15Trent Condon and Ken Miller, we'll talk sports with you for
- 0:18the next couple of hours. Thanks for starting your
- 0:20afternoon with us. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:24program. The Iowa football media
- 0:27availability was this morning and Elliot Cleff from Hawkeye
- 0:30Insider was there 24/7 sports. So we will speak with him as to
- 0:35what he heard. Mark Gronowski was part of it as
- 0:39well. So the QB spoke.
- 0:41How's his progression coming along?
- 0:43Obviously, the Manning passing camp on all accounts, all things
- 0:46went well there. But Elliott was in the scrum as
- 0:49he listened to the QB answer those questions.
- 0:52So we'll pick his brain on that. Coming up at the bottom of the
- 0:55hour, our number 2 to Chicago we go.
- 0:57It's the cap man Centurion Stone of Iowa sponsors Cappy on a
- 1:00weekly basis. We'll talk Cubs, we'll talk
- 1:03Bears, we'll talk Chicago sports with Cappy coming up at 1:00.
- 1:07And then Nick Athen do a little bit on one of our regional
- 1:10teams. The Kansas City Chiefs will ask
- 1:12him about Fat Pat the QB amongst other things when he joins us at
- 1:171:30. Trent's plays of the day
- 1:19following that at about 1:50. Circus sports sponsor those.
- 1:25How are you? Not too shabby.
- 1:26Good to see you again. It's been.
- 1:28About an hour, yeah, since we taped our Mediacom show that
- 1:32airs on MC22 weekly as we talk sports wagering on TV and do
- 1:36some on the radio. So was listening on the drive as
- 1:40I had a couple of errands to run in between and was listening to
- 1:44the first half of the fever match up.
- 1:47Now where did you get that? Well, I just had DIRECTV plugged
- 1:50into the aux cable and and listened that way and they're
- 1:55getting throttled, they're getting crushed by the
- 1:57Valkyries. It's is there something deeper
- 2:01going on with this team? They miss Christie's sides.
- 2:08I can't go there with you, OK? I was just through that out
- 2:12there. It's not going well.
- 2:14Stephanie White was supposed to take this team to a new.
- 2:16Level she is not. No, not at all.
- 2:18She is not Caitlin Clark, has not had a good year.
- 2:19No, by by any measure she's not been good and is not good again
- 2:24today. Only played 12 minutes so far in
- 2:27the first half. Got five points, couple of
- 2:29turnovers, 2 assists, 3 rebounds in the game.
- 2:33But she does. I mean, she had that shooting
- 2:38slump last year, right? And worked her way out of it and
- 2:41obviously finished the year doing very well.
- 2:44But I don't know, maybe they've they figured her out if they
- 2:48were like, this is the best women basketball players in the
- 2:50world, right? So they're going to adjust and
- 2:54it seems like they are. So we'll see how it goes.
- 2:56But the Valkyrie is one of the stories in the West.
- 3:01Off to what, A nine point lead did you say at halftime?
- 3:03Only 9 points in the second quarter for the Fever?
- 3:08Yikes, that's bad. 4132 as I flipped it on here, the halftime
- 3:13was so. Where are you watching it?
- 3:15Because for whatever reason, Wimbledon is on this TV and I
- 3:17can't. Stand Well Channel 5 here
- 3:19locally. Oh, then that should be easy.
- 3:20Yes, that's that's an easy 1. And I know the Quad Cities to
- 3:24our listeners over in the Quad Cities also their local
- 3:26affiliates over there have it on the ABC channel, I believe also
- 3:29in the Quad City. So you can catch it that way if
- 3:31you're out of market. NBATV also I believe.
- 3:33Has it done? Gotcha.
- 3:35Well, we don't want you watching TV, we want you listening to
- 3:37your radios because we've got a quality couple of hours coming
- 3:39up. So let's recap the baseball from
- 3:42last night. And we got to start with your
- 3:45Twins, who put one on the Cubs last night and did so especially
- 3:49that 8th inning, right? The bats went crazy 2 nothing
- 3:52after the first and then it was really good pitch, well pitched
- 3:55ball game between then. I thought the Twins bullpen was
- 3:58unbelievable last night. Here's my question.
- 4:01Ryan Jeffers, How does this guy only have seven home runs?
- 4:03My God, that ball he hit last night, holy mackerel just
- 4:07absolutely crushed it. He got off to the Super hot
- 4:12start a year ago. I don't know if you remember
- 4:13that he was at the top of the league in in a lot of power
- 4:16categories for the first, I don't know, month, month and a
- 4:19half of the season and then really trailed off through the
- 4:21back half of the year. He has to play himself as the
- 4:23number one catcher, but he's a guy that's also great because a
- 4:28lot of people thought he could catch at this level.
- 4:29He was not a good pitch framer and what did he do?
- 4:32Worked his ass off and he became one of at least the top half
- 4:35pitch framers in the league just by putting in the work to make
- 4:38it happen. But the that's always been
- 4:40there. But that's a guy that you wonder
- 4:42if the twins do trade, is he a trade candidate?
- 4:44Because finally, those types of catchers are there, but you're.
- 4:47Right, Robomscom Will pitch framers be that confident?
- 4:50Not going to be important, right, not at the same level,
- 4:52that is for sure, But that's an Ave. that I I definitely with
- 4:56Jeffers, a guy that's probably been a disappointment and a lot
- 4:59of guys offensively this year that have been disappointing for
- 5:01this group and and outside of Byron Buxton, who's been
- 5:04healthy. Nope.
- 5:05And he's been not good. Yeah, make sure.
- 5:08I think Harrison Bader's had a quiet, nice year because he had
- 5:11no expectations coming in, right?
- 5:13He's a lot of folks thought he was just playing out the string
- 5:15might have the best hair in baseball.
- 5:16And great catch to come diving in it.
- 5:18Was unbelievable. Defensively, he might be the
- 5:20best left fielder in baseball. Now he plays center field for
- 5:23Buxton and he is still a plus center.
- 5:25Field, he's really good. Center left fielder as well,
- 5:29yeah, but defensively he's good. He is tremendous.
- 5:31Not so much offensively, though. He's got hot here the last week
- 5:34or so. It's a Twins team that still has
- 5:36so much to do. And as I mentioned Monday to
- 5:39you, I just wonder what the pending sale of the team, the
- 5:43poll ads are not going to put any money into it.
- 5:44So you're not going to buy, but do you want potentially a lame
- 5:49duck front office making the decisions of what you're doing
- 5:52about the future of your organization or you just stand
- 5:55back? You know what?
- 5:56It's the poll ads and I don't think they want what?
- 5:59What's about Delhi's contracts? Got another year, right?
- 6:01That sounds right. Yeah, and they've already said
- 6:02he's coming back. Everybody's coming back.
- 6:04You know what I'm thinking? I think that they're taking the
- 6:06easy way out, knowing that they're going to sell the team.
- 6:08Look, if new ownership wants to come in, you fire him, you pay
- 6:10him. I don't want to.
- 6:11If you can find somebody that's going to take Carlos Correa's
- 6:14contract, I mean, that's a different conversation.
- 6:16If you don't have to eat, you know much of it or any of it,
- 6:19then that may be changed to the tune.
- 6:21And does that financially make a sale easier?
- 6:24I mean that's, that's kind of go in hand in hand with all of that
- 6:27Fairpoint as you get into that part is all of sudden you take a
- 6:30couple $100 million off the books a little bit easier maybe
- 6:33to sell that team and. I agree that makes it better.
- 6:35Rebuild the way that you want. It's it's a difficult situation.
- 6:40And as I so told what our friend Lauren, who chimed in last night
- 6:44that I was going, I'm not going to be rubbing it in.
- 6:46I've watched this cub Steve this year.
- 6:47They're a lot better than my twins.
- 6:48One night aside. They are.
- 6:50So are the Brewers and the Brewers, we'll get to them in a
- 6:52second because this miss Roski, is unbelievable.
- 6:54Unbelievable. You know, the eighth inning
- 6:56where the Cubs put or the Twins rather put up a sixth spot.
- 7:00I thought the Cubs had a real chance at this to begin that
- 7:03inning. Hap seeing I single the hole
- 7:06between first and second base Tucker's down O2 and walked and
- 7:13then strikeout strikeout groundout whatever it was they I
- 7:17think it was back-to-back strikeouts or was that the in
- 7:19India had back-to-back pop outs whatever they had an opportunity
- 7:23in the in the 8th inning didn't get it done.
- 7:25Then the twins had their turn at the plate and man oh man they
- 7:29got the Hodge Hodge had absolutely nothing last night
- 7:32looked like they must know what's coming.
- 7:33Speaking of the Twins, because they.
- 7:36Got Carl's career on their team. They were swinging out of their
- 7:38shoes and they were just crushing baseballs.
- 7:41Anyways, Game 2 of that one goes tonight.
- 7:43That the Brewers to me are are a team that they're going to be
- 7:49disappointed at the All Star break is is upon us because I
- 7:52don't think they want to stop. I don't think the Blue Jays want
- 7:54to stop. I don't think the Brewers want
- 7:56to stop watching Mizarowski and I did until the I missed the
- 8:01first inning of the Cubs and the Twins.
- 8:04But watch watch the Dodgers and the Brewers early and third
- 8:09pitch of the game. Otani Boomcon thinking, all
- 8:12right, the rookies met his match here and that is bad.
- 8:14He did, and then he got to work and finished with six innings of
- 8:21work, 18 outs, 12 of them came by strikeout.
- 8:25This kid is unbelievable, and if you've missed the opportunity to
- 8:29bet on him for American League Rookie of the Year, you're too
- 8:32late because that whatever price you were going to get, those are
- 8:35long gone. Our National League Player of
- 8:37the Rookie of the Year, I should say it is unbelievable just the
- 8:41impact he's having. So, Miss Roski, did you see the
- 8:45note last night Speaking of that game and then the bullpen arms
- 8:48that they brought in afterwards, the average fastball velocity?
- 8:53Of Miss Roski. Of the whole.
- 8:54Team OK, whole staff. I did not see this.
- 8:57It was either 99.8 or 98.9, whatever it was, but that was
- 9:01the average fastball velocity of the whole staff that pitched
- 9:04last night. It is the by far highest of the
- 9:07stat track era that they've had that dates back to 2008.
- 9:10And I was going to guess there's probably not a team that had a
- 9:12fastball velocity that averaged that over the course of a nine
- 9:15inning game. Back to Mizuroski though.
- 9:18So we hear about this kid first time, all right?
- 9:20It's eye opening. What do they do with him though?
- 9:24As far as pitch, as far as innings count.
- 9:26Exactly because it's not just obviously the innings, the 25
- 9:30and 2/3 that he has right now. He was also in the minor leagues
- 9:33earlier this. Season, you're right.
- 9:35And in the minors this year, he threw, let me find it here, 63
- 9:38and a third. So we're talking about 87
- 9:41innings that he's pitched already.
- 9:42Normally with these young guys, like 125, it's kind of the cap.
- 9:46Maybe 150 is what you're pushing it, do you?
- 9:50And he's got a, he's got a lat straight, you know, you put,
- 9:53he's got a tweaked ankle. Yeah.
- 9:55Do you put him down for two weeks?
- 9:57Do you go bullpen for a little bit?
- 10:00You got to have him in the rotation.
- 10:01Well, here's the thing. They're 2 1/2 games out.
- 10:05The Cubs are not a cinch in this division because of the Brewers.
- 10:08I'm convinced of it. And not just the Brewers.
- 10:10I mean, you still have, I don't believe in the Cardinals, but
- 10:12they're still hanging around. They still.
- 10:14They're hanging around, but they're falling further behind.
- 10:16They are. You got the Reds and those are
- 10:17teams. It's not just that those teams
- 10:19are going to catch them, because I don't think the Cardinals or
- 10:21Reds will, but they're competent teams and when you have the
- 10:25depth of a division, you're going to be playing a lot of
- 10:27games against those teams going. Forward.
- 10:29Let me let Let's take a look at that.
- 10:31That's a fairpoint. What do the Brewers and Cubs
- 10:33have left? They've got three at the end of
- 10:39July in Milwaukee and then they go to Wrigley and they've got
- 10:43five games at Wrigley. They got a make up doubleheader
- 10:46on Monday the 18th, so that's eight.
- 10:49Are they done after that? They must be.
- 10:51They're done after that. What is the what are the final
- 10:54two or three series like for both of those teams?
- 10:56So I got the Brewers up here. This is their final three.
- 10:59They go to Saint Louis, they go to San Diego, That's tough.
- 11:04And then they wrap up at home against the Reds.
- 11:06OK, so that should be. Meanwhile, the Cubs are doing
- 11:08what I know. They've got the Cardinals to end
- 11:10it. I'm pretty sure the Cardinals
- 11:13come up at the back end. All right, here we go.
- 11:17Their final three series for the Cubs. 4 at Cincinnati, three at
- 11:23home against the Mets, three at home against the Cardinals.
- 11:27Mets are going to be in a playoff hunt fight at that
- 11:30point, don't you think? Here's a good Tampa Yes.
- 11:35How about the beginning of September, though?
- 11:36You get the Braves two of three series in between the Nationals.
- 11:40A Braves team's gonna be dead. I.
- 11:42Would think so. Yeah, I would think so.
- 11:43That schedule sets up pretty well.
- 11:45And then after those series, you mentioned the Rays, you get the
- 11:47Pirates after that schedule's pretty.
- 11:50That's a that's a favorable schedule, I would say for the
- 11:53Cubs when you're looking at maybe the totality, I guess of
- 11:56September, because I mentioned the final three before that they
- 12:00opened Here it is against the Phillies do the Brewers.
- 12:04OK. They go to Pittsburgh for three.
- 12:06OK, Rangers for three on their. Own they're in a fight.
- 12:09Cardinals, Angels. Better, but yeah, hanging around
- 12:13but not you. Know and then those final three
- 12:14at Cardinals, at Padres, home for Cincy.
- 12:18Oh, September baseball 2 teams, I think gonna fight things out
- 12:21and they've got eight games head to head left, but sadly none of
- 12:25them in the month of September. All right, let's do a couple of
- 12:29things here, Trent. Let's let's win totals are out
- 12:31there. They have been out, but they've
- 12:33been upgraded. Are are updated.
- 12:36I should say not upgraded, updated at circus boards.
- 12:39When it comes to Big 12 and Big 10, I don't get involved in
- 12:42these markets because there's not a big enough return for, for
- 12:45my liking. As I've said many times, I I'm
- 12:48going to try and, you know, 21 or North.
- 12:50That's why I like to play. But when it comes to win totals,
- 12:54is there a Big 12 win total that gets your fancy right off the
- 12:59top? I mean, there's three teams at
- 13:01the top that have a win total of 8 1/2, Texas Tech, K State and
- 13:08Utah's Utah. The other one, Arizona State,
- 13:10Arizona State, that's right, Utah's 7 1/2.
- 13:13So is is there a Big 12 team that gets your attention?
- 13:16Starting at the top of those three teams, Arizona State, K
- 13:20State and Texas Tech. If I had to make a bet amongst
- 13:23those three, I think my bet would be under on Arizona State.
- 13:26And I know I'm going against conventional wisdom preseason
- 13:29pick. Even if the Big 12 didn't
- 13:31officially put out a poll, plenty of other places have gone
- 13:34and done that to replicate what they did a year ago and a year
- 13:39that. Remember, they also lost two
- 13:40games in conference. It was a four way tie at 7:00
- 13:42and 2:00. Tiebreaker went their way as it
- 13:44did Iowa State and that's why they got their way down to
- 13:47Texas. It just these teams that come
- 13:49out of nowhere. The sustainability is so
- 13:51difficult and. Escada Boo was a cheat code.
- 13:55He. Was he was.
- 13:56You know, I remember, I think it was leading into that or maybe
- 13:59he was leading into the playoff game against Texas, watching a
- 14:02story about him and he was talking about he was very
- 14:06selfish as a young player. He was very selfish.
- 14:09It was all about him and finally he understand it's not just
- 14:12about talent. That's being a good teammate,
- 14:15doing the things, lifting other guys up.
- 14:17And you saw those leadership qualities a year ago.
- 14:19I mean, you saw him go to his offensive line, you saw him
- 14:22embracing Sam Levitt. He wasn't that guy before.
- 14:24He was kind of a bad teammate. And that changed.
- 14:29And you lose not only the production, which is
- 14:31outstanding, you lose talent which was outstanding, but then
- 14:35you throw in the fact of that leadership quality that that
- 14:38will to win at a place like Arizona State.
- 14:40I think that's tough to replicate.
- 14:42Tyson's back. That dude's a stunt.
- 14:44Yeah, he is. And, and how many games did he
- 14:46miss at the end of the year or he didn't play the Big 10
- 14:48championship or the playoffs? Right.
- 14:50He is a difference maker at wider.
- 14:52Levitt's a stunt. I I really do like Sam Levitt.
- 14:55It's kind of the rest of the roster and just doing it again
- 14:58that were my concern. So of those top three, I would
- 15:01go under Arizona State under 8 1/2.
- 15:04You know the one that I think that if if I was to get involved
- 15:07with it, I maybe think has the best chance to get.
- 15:09I don't think Iowa State's winning 8 football games.
- 15:12You don't the. 7 1/2 I can get them to seven and five.
- 15:16Here's my big concern when it comes to them.
- 15:18Trent 167 catches it's. A good place to start, right?
- 15:25167 catches have graduated Solon Townsend.
- 15:32Maybe two really good receivers. Can you see them coming up with
- 15:36anything close to that? Now, I'll say this.
- 15:38I think Bramer, if he's healthy, has a chance.
- 15:43This is his last year. Names.
- 15:45I'm convinced of that. He's going to the NFL draft
- 15:47after this year. I think he's that good of a
- 15:50player. I really do.
- 15:51I think he's an NFL tight end. He's certainly built for it.
- 15:54I think he's got the let's not forget he was a freshman All
- 15:57American, right? I mean, he was unbelievable
- 16:00right out of the chute. But I can't get past Higgins and
- 16:03Noel not being there. I just can't.
- 16:06Jalen Noel won the Iowa game. They don't win that football
- 16:09game. They don't almost maybe any
- 16:12other receiver. He won that football game.
- 16:14The Central Florida game. They don't win with Jaden.
- 16:18How often can you say a wide receiver wins you 2 football
- 16:21games without him you don't win. It's not very often.
- 16:24And he was the difference maker in both of those games, so he
- 16:27just flipped those two. We're having a different.
- 16:30Conversation, aren't we? I, I, I think so look, I think
- 16:31they're going to win seven games.
- 16:33There's a lot of parity in the league yes, Campbell said
- 16:36yesterday he answered the question.
- 16:37I think it was an on the side question.
- 16:38I want to get this what he may or may not have said.
- 16:43That's getting a lot of play about pay cuts and whether he
- 16:46said it or not, I think it's semantics.
- 16:47I, I get what he if Pete Thammel misquoted him.
- 16:52I, I kind of, I think it's semantics, but it's not, it's
- 16:54not good on Thammel, But we'll get to that in just a second.
- 16:57Campbell was asked about, you know, some of the concerns
- 17:01around his team and defensive line came up and.
- 17:06And yeah, Dominic Orange is a heck of a.
- 17:07Player. Right, but but they lost guys to
- 17:11the transfer portal. We know they're deep at
- 17:13linebacker. Porter, what round was he
- 17:17taking? In?
- 17:17The third round of the NFL draft.
- 17:19So they got they've got some guys in the secondary.
- 17:21Conradi was really good. That's how we remember him
- 17:25because he made a really long football kick in a really big
- 17:28football game. But he was tiny bit above
- 17:31average. Yeah.
- 17:32Am I being unfair to him? But he's AB minus.
- 17:35And when you look at the schedule for Iowa State this
- 17:37year, this is what worries me. The K state game.
- 17:42They're a dog in this game, right, right.
- 17:45This game is a complete toss up. If they don't win this game, you
- 17:49like their chances of coming home.
- 17:50They should beat South South Dakota, but you're coming home
- 17:53from. Dublin, it's basically a short
- 17:55week. Right, Jet lag, you know the
- 18:00time change on your body. Then you got to prepare for
- 18:03Cyhawk. You go on the road to Arkansas
- 18:05State, your first four, if you're two and two.
- 18:09Oh, boy, right. Yeah.
- 18:11Arizona at Cincy, at Colorado, of those three, they probably
- 18:16win. They need to win 3.
- 18:17Yes. I think to cash they need to win
- 18:21those three to cash the over, yeah.
- 18:24Then BYU, who's a player? No rats left.
- 18:27Well, that's, well, we don't know that yet, though.
- 18:30Arizona State, here come the defending champs at TCU, we both
- 18:34think TCU's arrows pointing up. Hoover's a stud.
- 18:36Hoover is a stud. Daniels in his final year at
- 18:39Kansas, is he? Going to be healthy well.
- 18:41Probably not Oklahoma State, so let's give him Oklahoma State.
- 18:45Kansas of the BYU, Arizona State, TCU, You want to give him
- 18:52one there? At least, yeah.
- 18:54So I'll give him one. That's three.
- 18:58That means they have to win all of at Arizona, Cincy, Colorado
- 19:02to get them to six. Find two more, beat Iowa, BK
- 19:07State. It's tough.
- 19:09I think I would take the under on Iowa State.
- 19:11Now just to poke hole in that mention the three games, I think
- 19:15they're incredibly important Arizona at Cincy at Colorado a
- 19:18minimum win 2 and it's also the two of them are on the road
- 19:22that's sweepable. That's a sweepable stretch of
- 19:24season coming off a by leading into that three get another by
- 19:27after those three games mentioned BYU really good a year
- 19:31ago. Two years ago, they stunk,
- 19:33right? Ratzlauf, who knows he's not
- 19:35there. And Brewer, Keith, we're going
- 19:37to get to you. Hang on, be patient.
- 19:38I wanted to get back to you. I mean, you're in July and you
- 19:40still don't know who your quarterback is.
- 19:42That's the problem. Arizona State, but maybe they
- 19:44do. I think there's a step back for
- 19:46Arizona State and you get them at Jack Trice.
- 19:49Both of those games at Jack Trice?
- 19:50Yep. And no scoutable who just killed
- 19:52you last year? At TCU, those games seem to
- 19:54always be weird when those two get together.
- 19:57And Kansas mentioned Danis might not be there.
- 19:59Oklahoma State, I mean, Gundy might be a swan song.
- 20:02I mean, he might be out the door at that point.
- 20:05And that difficult closing stretch maybe doesn't turn out
- 20:09to be back to the parody where you kind of started this
- 20:12conversation, because would you be shocked if BYU falls back to
- 20:165:00 and 7:00? If Arizona State's A7 and five,
- 20:19I wouldn't. If they don't have an adequate
- 20:20quarterback, I will not be shocked.
- 20:22And that's but they haven't. Ruled him out yet and he hasn't
- 20:25found a new. Home What's?
- 20:26What's the verbiage? Because he hasn't.
- 20:28Entered the portal, hasn't entered the portal.
- 20:30So he's still got that honor code, that student honor code.
- 20:34Because remember the power forward, What was that 15 years
- 20:36ago for BYU, the basketball player that had the same thing?
- 20:39And he waited and he went to court and he tried everything?
- 20:43No, it's a private institution. They can do what they want.
- 20:45We can do what they want, Kick Rustlaw's not playing for.
- 20:47Them But help me out. The guy did the basketball
- 20:50player. Yeah.
- 20:51Was he good? Yeah, very good.
- 20:52Was he? Yeah, on a good BYU team.
- 20:54OK. That's good to say.
- 20:55Maybe they make it. We're talking about a
- 20:57quarterback, yes, Yeah. Do you maybe you know massage
- 21:01the rules a little bit? We're talking about a
- 21:03quarterback. Right, fair enough.
- 21:06Definitely fair. I get where you're going on that
- 21:08part, but it's happened before and they did not break their
- 21:11honor code. Yeah, we'll see.
- 21:16We'll save the Big 10 for later because I got one of those that
- 21:18I think is a complete slam dunk. All right, Keith's been on hold
- 21:21for a long time. Keith, thanks for being patient.
- 21:23How are you? Hey, thanks for the time.
- 21:25Hey, on that vein, you're just talking about, you know, Athlon
- 21:28magazine has they listed their top 10 college football games
- 21:33this fall. Yeah, one of the top 10 is
- 21:36November 1st, Arizona State of Iowa State.
- 21:38So when they put that on the list, I assume they think that
- 21:40both teams be undefeated going into that game.
- 21:44So that'll be interesting. I know Eric State's got that
- 21:47transfer that that big running back transfer from Army to
- 21:50repeat scatter. We'll see what happens anyway.
- 21:53Hey, why I call they, you know, hey, Cubby fans, don't look in
- 21:56the rearview mirror right now. They're coming the same old
- 21:59Brewers, the the team that seems to win recently every year, the
- 22:02NL Central, they're right there 2.5 games back.
- 22:06You know, your buddy David Kaplan likes to diminish the Pat
- 22:10Murphy effect, but I think it's very, very real.
- 22:13He's got a payroll 1/2 of the Cubs.
- 22:15He's got a payroll one 1/3 of the Dodgers, who they just
- 22:19beaten twice in a row. And you know, one of the weak
- 22:21spots going in was pitching, and now it's one of the strengths of
- 22:24that. Well, Woodruff being back is
- 22:26huge, especially if he pitches like he pitches when this
- 22:29weekend, Sunday. He pitches this weekend.
- 22:31I know at home. Yeah, and of course I forget
- 22:34that I can't pronounce the guy's name last night too, but.
- 22:37Is this Zoroski? Yeah.
- 22:39It looks to me like the stars are aligned again and and the
- 22:43brew, Like I said, the Brewers have one thing the Cubs don't
- 22:46have and that's Pat Murphy at the manicure spot.
- 22:49Ironic though, right that day. Walking.
- 22:51The the Campbells are the the counselor rather.
- 22:54Thanks for the call, Keith. Pat Murphy was his bench coach.
- 23:00I'm looking at Mizuroski and I just googled to see if there's
- 23:02any articles about a pitch number, innings limit that
- 23:05they're looking at. I'm not seeing anything, at
- 23:08least in the first go around going through here.
- 23:11Oh, here it is. Here's something.
- 23:12Well, this is from AI, so hold on to your hats.
- 23:15Brewers are managing Mizuroski's innings carefully, likely with
- 23:18the target around 140 to 150 innings.
- 23:21And with in the majors or overall?
- 23:24Overall and we how many how many did he pitch in AAA?
- 23:27Any idea? He is currently at 79 and a
- 23:30third innings overall in totality.
- 23:33OK, then maybe. Can I give you my best bet if I
- 23:38if I was playing these things when it comes to over unders?
- 23:40Yeah, it's a Big 10 team. A Big 10 team.
- 23:42A Big 10 team whose win total is 7 1/2, and I think it's a
- 23:46complete miss, a complete miss. Nebraska, you're Husker, Kenny.
- 23:51So, but you're close. It is a border state, so go E
- 23:55It's Illinois. Illinois.
- 23:57I love Illinois. They won nine, yes, they won
- 24:02nine games last year. Now their best receiver is a
- 24:04Bronco. Denver Bronco.
- 24:07Not a Boise State Bronco. No, no, he didn't transfer to
- 24:09Boise State. He's a Denver Bronco.
- 24:11But here's their schedule. Trent Western Illinois at Duke,
- 24:16Western Michigan 3 and O. Should be Duke will be tricky
- 24:20tricky. Duke's gonna be pretty good.
- 24:21I think their win total of 6 1/2 in the ACC, But I I like
- 24:25Illinois. I like Illinois on the road.
- 24:27So I've got them three and O at Indiana.
- 24:30MM Hmm. Your toss up game.
- 24:32Home Home to USC. Good game, good game.
- 24:36Split there. That's fair. 4 at Purdue, 5 Ohio
- 24:41State at home, 5 at Washington. Tough West Coast.
- 24:46Give them five at home to Rutgers. 6.
- 24:50Home to Maryland. Seven at Whiskey Bert going back
- 24:56to Wisconsin. They get them.
- 24:59Yeah, badges gonna stink. Northwestern.
- 25:03That's that's nine. That's nine and three.
- 25:04That's nine and three, 7 1/2 win total.
- 25:07Now they are. Counting on a completely new not
- 25:10just from 4, they're counting on 4 transfers.
- 25:14Are they all gonna hit? Yep, no doubt about it.
- 25:19Huh, not in my mind. Starting with that component,
- 25:23that would be probably the easiest hole to poke in.
- 25:26Them looking for a #1 receiver and a completely new front, and
- 25:30the way the Bealema plays physicality up front.
- 25:33That would be my concern with the aligner.
- 25:35But it's hard to poke a hole in that scheduling.
- 25:37Running back is back. Altmire is back.
- 25:40You know when you were gone, I had Nick Osen on, who covers
- 25:43Wisconsin. They're in trouble now.
- 25:47Nick didn't think so. Of course, Nick is one of the
- 25:49most positive people I ever met in my life.
- 25:51We both love Nick Osen. We both love Nick Osen, can't
- 25:54wait to talk to him again for Wisconsin Iowa week.
- 25:57And any excuse we can find to talk to Nick Osen, 'cause he's a
- 26:00good dude, he's a happy go lucky guy and a great guy and we both
- 26:04love. Him and engaged congratulations
- 26:06to you I. Wish I would have known that or
- 26:07would have said something. It just happened this week.
- 26:10You had to ruin the surprise, really.
- 26:16They they've got to go to Alabama, they've got to go to
- 26:19Michigan, they host Ohio State, they've got to go to Oregon,
- 26:23they've got to go to Indiana, they've got to host Illinois,
- 26:25and they've got to play Minnesota.
- 26:27That's part of their schedule. Giant, I can't find four wins.
- 26:331st 2 Miami, Ohio, Middle Tennessee All right.
- 26:35Two and O. They get Maryland at home.
- 26:38Two and O no. I'm.
- 26:39Three and one, OK, three and one.
- 26:41Then how about their October at Michigan?
- 26:43Three and two home for Iowa, 3 and 3.
- 26:45Ohio State three and four at Oregon 3:00 and 5:00 and then
- 26:49Washington IN Illinois 7. Three and eight, Three and nine.
- 26:53It's tough. Absolutely.
- 26:55Wow. Have they fallen?
- 26:56Huh. Fickle might not make it to
- 26:58November. Now there's one I could buy.
- 27:00First coach fired. Get ahead of the posse except.
- 27:04Well, yeah, stranger things have happened.
- 27:08Somebody's mean there's going to be big name coaches that fall,
- 27:10as there are every year. We're going to talk to Elliot
- 27:12Clough. He was at the football
- 27:14availability for Iowa today. Mark Gronowski met the media,
- 27:17anxious to get the latest on that, and we will.
- 27:21But right now, let's head to kxando.com.
- 27:24This nationwide keyword this hour.
- 27:25It's worth $1000 to somebody. Why not be you?
- 27:28The keyword is grand. Type grand in the pop up.
- 27:30boxgrand@kxando.com. Your chance to win $1000 grand
- 27:36at K axando.com Coming up on 1230, Elliott Clef is next.
- 27:41Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network 25 minutes before
- 27:501. Miller and Condon, welcome back,
- 27:51Iowa Sports Radio Network. We take you until two.
- 27:56Turn things over to Sean and Lucas as they come off the bench
- 28:00until 5:00 overtime. Iowa 5 to 6.
- 28:03Elliot Cliff, he was out of work for a couple of days not long as
- 28:08he found a spot back as he should have at
- 28:10hawkeyeinsider.com. Does a great job covering Iowa,
- 28:13and he joins us to recap the football availability from
- 28:16earlier this morning. Elliot, Congrats on the new gig.
- 28:20Glad that you're still on the Hawkeye beat.
- 28:22And how are you, Sir? Trenton, Ken.
- 28:25I'm good guys. Thanks.
- 28:27Thanks for for the shout there. I know I appeared right when I,
- 28:31you know, around that time I got the news and and you guys, you
- 28:35know, said some good words about, you know, the work that I
- 28:38put in and stuff like that. So I really appreciate it.
- 28:41As always, happy to be back on and talking.
- 28:43Yeah, absolutely. It's two way St. here.
- 28:44We're grateful for what you guys and everybody in the Hawkeye
- 28:46beat does the join not only our show, but all of them here at
- 28:50KX&O. So Mark Rodowski met the media
- 28:53today. Certainly sounds like a
- 28:55confident young man. I'm not a young man, confident
- 29:00quarterback as he is. The the Manning passing camp
- 29:04went very well. All systems go.
- 29:07Was that your take listening to QB One earlier today?
- 29:12Yep, he's telling the media that he's 100% healthy and that he's
- 29:15100% comfortable. And Tim Lester's offense, that
- 29:18was one of the main draws for him to come to Iowa too, the
- 29:21Shanahan style offense, learn a little bit more about how they
- 29:24run things in the NFL And that's, you know, that's where
- 29:28he wants to be. And, and he's he's gone
- 29:30obviously to the Manning Passing Academy as well as went to
- 29:33Dallas with a couple of his teammates to work with Jeff
- 29:35Christensen, who's an NFL quarterbacks coach, as well as
- 29:39went on a trip to the Ozarks with some of the offensive
- 29:41lineman. So he's starting to get to know
- 29:43the guys. He's getting integrated with the
- 29:45offense and feeling, feeling comfortable and confident with
- 29:48where he's at. So, yeah, sounds like all
- 29:50systems go. You know, being hurt is
- 29:53obviously not ideal for the spring, but it sounds like he's
- 29:57he's comfortable with the offense.
- 29:58He's continuing to learn, he's continuing to get confident and
- 30:01and feels good about where things are at.
- 30:03KJ Parker is a guy that keeps kind of getting that buzz, so
- 30:07he's available today. I think that says something at
- 30:10the wide receiver position. If they're going to put him out
- 30:12there, it's not for him to play 15 snaps this year.
- 30:15It is a deep room, something that isn't always the case of
- 30:17wide receiver. No retra freshman.
- 30:19Yeah. He maintained it a year ago.
- 30:22We heard it last year. Now we've been hearing it
- 30:24throughout the spring and the summer.
- 30:26How big of a piece is KJ Parker going to be to this offense?
- 30:29Yeah, that's a really good question.
- 30:31That wide receiver group, dare I say it's deep this year for
- 30:35Iowa. They've got probably 7-8 guys
- 30:37that have either had time or on the field in general and college
- 30:41football, but also in black and gold, but also guys that that
- 30:45probably deserved to see some time in the field, like KJ
- 30:48Parker. You can't forget they added Sam
- 30:50Phillips from Chattanooga. You're going down the list of
- 30:52guys from last season and Jeriat Bowie and Dayton Howard and Seth
- 30:56Anderson and Jacob Gill, right? So and, and you get to throw
- 31:00Kaden Wegen into that group too, even though he's known for being
- 31:03a returner. So I got to know KJA little bit
- 31:06during his recruitment. The sentiment around him is kind
- 31:09of how how did he end up in Iowa?
- 31:11How was Iowa the only power for school that was really still
- 31:15involved late in his his recruitment?
- 31:18And actually Iowa initially wanted him as a safety before
- 31:20they flipped the recruiting him as a wide receiver.
- 31:23But yeah, I've, I've been told by multiple people that he's got
- 31:26phenomenal ball skills and that he just continues to wow folks
- 31:30in practice. So he, he's going to see the
- 31:33field this year to, to what degree.
- 31:35And you know, how many snaps, how many catches, We don't all,
- 31:37all that stuff in terms of the numbers that's going to be up in
- 31:40the air. We'll, we'll probably learn more
- 31:42at Kids Day. But you know, everything I've
- 31:44I've heard from behind the scenes is that he's standing out
- 31:47and at the same time fitting in with that that talented group of
- 31:50receivers. Well, when it comes to the
- 31:52running back position, how's this going to shake up because
- 31:54it didn't seem like this time last year's, we think back Caleb
- 31:58Johnson wasn't necessarily going to be the guy, just turned out
- 32:02he was more than the guy. He was unbelievable.
- 32:05Patterson, Moulton, there's a lot of love for Washington.
- 32:10Trent, your guy Dolls maybe in the mix, a lot of a lot of
- 32:14running backs to divvy up the carries.
- 32:17How is it going to work out? Well, don't forget Xavier
- 32:20Williams and Nathan Mcnell with her.
- 32:22Those are those are two guys that I've heard some good things
- 32:24about. It's definitely going to be
- 32:25running back by committee, but the the three lead guys of that
- 32:30group of six will be TJ Washington, Jazz Patterson and
- 32:34Kumari Moulton. Kumari Moulton, but the
- 32:36headliner probably of that group, I think they all have
- 32:39skill sets that really complement each other well.
- 32:42Kumari is more of that every down back.
- 32:44TJ is like a third down back that's really dynamic out of the
- 32:47backfield can probably return punts kicks this year.
- 32:51He might be returning kicks next to Kaden Wegen by by the sounds
- 32:55of it, but and then Jazz Patterson, of course, a hard
- 32:58hitter, Xavier Williams, really tough to tackle.
- 33:01Reverend Dahl, a speedster, your guy Trent state champ and track.
- 33:05And then Nathan McNeil. I I think I told you guys this
- 33:07earlier, but earlier in the year, but I had a source
- 33:11describe him to me as lightning in a bottle.
- 33:13So he's he's a guy that's really fun.
- 33:15Then enrolled early came up from Florida like Liddell Betts love
- 33:19those Florida running backs. So came up from there and I I'd
- 33:23expect him to contribute one way or another this year.
- 33:25If you can save it, if you can give him a red shirt, awesome.
- 33:28But this, this group is is loaded, and it wouldn't surprise
- 33:31me if Omar Young goes to any of them at any given time.
- 33:34Jennings dunker back for a right tackle, one of the better right
- 33:36tackles you're going to find in college football, but is coming
- 33:39off that surgery on his ankle this spring.
- 33:42Did he say today kind of where he is in his rehab coming back
- 33:45and and the anticipation of when he's going to be full goal with
- 33:48the team? He did say that he said he's
- 33:51about a week out from being 100%.
- 33:53So to me that would that would I would assume that would mean
- 33:57he's he's getting back the the full participation and he'll be
- 34:00a full go for camp. So that's definitely a win.
- 34:04Of course, the offensive line he's an anchor of it.
- 34:07Logan Jones, both Stevens coming back right guard with Cade
- 34:10Peeper, who is playing left tackle between Bryce George,
- 34:13Trevor Lauk and and Jack Dosler. But yeah, Jennings, Jennings is,
- 34:18is sounding like he's going to be good to go and he's probably
- 34:21going to be in in line for some all Conference honors, maybe
- 34:24some All America honors this year.
- 34:26If you had to handicap, if we go to the Cluff casino, who would
- 34:30be the betting favorite right now to be the starting left
- 34:32tackle out of the the three guys that you mentioned?
- 34:35Man, that is that's a really good, really good question.
- 34:39My my favorite just as to where things are at currently would
- 34:44probably be Trevor Lauke out of out of Indianapolis, 4 star
- 34:48prospect that probably could have been guard could have been
- 34:52tackle at this next level. He's a guy that's a year younger
- 34:56than Jack Dosler, so probably a little bit more potential there.
- 35:01Been playing left tackle since he's been more or less since
- 35:03he's been in Iowa. Where is Bryce George?
- 35:05It's like I, I think I heard some analogy and I don't think
- 35:09this is right, but from what I've heard, flipping from right
- 35:11tackle to left tackle is like trying to pitch with your left
- 35:15hand when you're right-handed it.
- 35:16It's just, it's just not an easy transition.
- 35:20So from the things I'm hearing, it's sounding like it's going to
- 35:23be like and, and Jack Dosler could be a backup for left
- 35:27tackle, could be a backup for right tackle.
- 35:29He was getting those right tackle reps in the spring with
- 35:31Jennings out. So or some of them anyway.
- 35:34I know he did it the kids Day practice, but yeah, to me it's
- 35:38the betting favourites Loud. But I mean that could change
- 35:40through camp, right Ryce? George played a lot of football,
- 35:43so if he can figure it out and and he gets rolling, then very
- 35:47well could be George. You know back to spring camp is
- 35:49Speaking of getting reps when the started result.
- 35:51I I I liked what I saw at least on video of Hank Brown.
- 35:55He's not going to be a starter. He shouldn't be a star Granowski
- 35:57clearly QB one but is is Hank Brown without a doubt the next
- 36:03man up if it if indeed you do get to that point.
- 36:06After all, it is a contact sport.
- 36:09Yeah, he's got to be right. I mean we saw Jackson Stratton
- 36:12win two games almost pull off that comeback in UCLA.
- 36:15Great story. Yeah, great story, but he's a
- 36:18walk on been in the system for for a year ish now.
- 36:22He's actually the longest 10 year to Iowa quarterback now fun
- 36:25fact, after Tim yeah, Tim Lester completely did a re reboot of
- 36:32that room. But then you look at Jeremy
- 36:34Hecklinski as as the third spot as well.
- 36:37He might be competing with with Stratton there, depending on how
- 36:41that first year of of college football helped him out at Wake
- 36:44Forest under Warren Ruggiero. But yeah, it's it's got to be
- 36:47Hank after some starting experience in the SEC and he's
- 36:51really coming along. I've I've heard that like
- 36:53Granowski, he's gotten a lot more comfortable in the offense,
- 36:56really starting to be able to command things there under
- 37:00Center for for the second team. Couple weeks away, Big 10
- 37:03football media days. I will go on that Thursday.
- 37:05Ethan Herket, local kid from the corridor.
- 37:08Makes sense. Logan Jones, of course, coming
- 37:10back, all American candidate at center and then Cohen entering
- 37:12her who started one game in his career.
- 37:15Boy, that's a rarity for somebody like that to be making
- 37:17their way to media days. What was your take away and just
- 37:20what people say about Cohen entering her?
- 37:23Yeah, well, I don't know if you guys you guys probably know
- 37:25this, but player council determines who goes to the media
- 37:28day. So I think that's pretty telling
- 37:31of what his teammates think of him.
- 37:33I think, you know, he may not have started more than one game,
- 37:37but he's definitely had his impact.
- 37:39Of course, we all remember the Big 10 Championship and and
- 37:41chasing down the guy in the punt return.
- 37:43I think that's indicative of his effort 1/2 I mean, he might be
- 37:47one of the more, if not the most versatile defensive backs that
- 37:51the Hawkeyes have this year. And he's a hard hitter.
- 37:53And I mean, I, I he'd like him in coverage.
- 37:56He could play strong safety or cash.
- 37:58That's coming here between he and Zach Lutmer.
- 38:00I'd probably put Lutmer in cash and and entering her at strong
- 38:03safety at this point, but he's he's going to be something this
- 38:07year. He could be a breakout year.
- 38:09I mean, if there were any of these guys that could be NFL
- 38:12eligible that have potential to jump into that echelon.
- 38:16I think Cohen enteringer is right there.
- 38:18I I'm a really big Cohen enteringer guy from Michigan was
- 38:22offered by the Wolverines late decided to stick with Iowa and
- 38:26he's a great quote too. Like I thought he was on the
- 38:29list to go to Big 10 Media Days and like, yes.
- 38:32We got a good one so. I'm a I'm a big Cohen entering
- 38:36her fan the way he returned from that ACL injury in in the end of
- 38:41not this season, but the season prior and ends up back for fall
- 38:45camp. I mean, I, I, I'm really
- 38:47impressed with with what he's able to do, his range, his
- 38:50ability to hit. I wouldn't surprise me if he
- 38:53stacks up a few picks this year either.
- 38:54Elliot Cliff hawkeyeinsider.com part of 24/7 Sports.
- 38:58They got better when they brought you aboard.
- 39:00I think we're good in the 1st place.
- 39:01So Elliot, thanks for doing this.
- 39:02Appreciate it. And we'll talk to you down the
- 39:04road. Elliot, Thank you.
- 39:06Thanks, guys. Yeah, good to talk to you,
- 39:07Elliot Cliff, as we check in on the Hawks.
- 39:10Come back, finish hour number one, Miller and Con deny with
- 39:13Sports Radio Network. I'm Mallory Condon, Iowa Sports
- 39:19Radio Network, KXNO. Final couple of minutes here.
- 39:23The first hour of the program. So Matt Campbell may or may not
- 39:26have said, and it depends who you ask.
- 39:29Apparently Pete Thammill quoted Matt Campbell saying quote
- 39:33somewhere along the line. I'd say 20 of our top guys took
- 39:35a pay cut to come back to Iowa State and he's getting killed
- 39:41for it. I don't think it's worthy of the
- 39:43criticism. I think that speaks highly of
- 39:45the culture. I don't know if he actually said
- 39:48the word pay cut, but I believe he what he probably meant was
- 39:52could have got more money going elsewhere, which I guess kind of
- 39:56means like a pay cut, right? So it's semantics in that
- 39:59regard. But is that a damning statement?
- 40:01Is that something he should have kept to himself?
- 40:03Or is it you're making a mountain over molehill?
- 40:06Because this kind of speaks volumes about what he's got
- 40:08going there. The way that I see it is I think
- 40:11he just misspoke in a way he should have said guys could have
- 40:15got more money elsewhere, maybe put it that route or just saying
- 40:18because the pay cut implies now he is making $150,000 and now
- 40:22these guys are only making 50,000 because Iowa State's
- 40:25broke. Excellent point.
- 40:25And and that's what's going to be used on the recruiting trail.
- 40:28Hey, look what their coach said. You're not getting paid
- 40:30anything. You go there, you're you're
- 40:32going to be. Well, they may give you this in
- 40:34year 1, but year 2 they're going to ask you to take a pay cut.
- 40:36Damn. No, people will use that.
- 40:38Yeah, they will. So I think, yeah, the quote's
- 40:41real. He said it and what he was
- 40:43trying to say, I think we all understand that because we heard
- 40:46all the stories that are out there.
- 40:47It was just the verbiage he used was not the right way to imply
- 40:51what he was trying to get to. I buy exactly what you're
- 40:54selling. Absolutely.
- 40:55Hour 2 is coming up next. Cappy kicks it off Chicago
- 40:59sports the focus of our conversation with Cappy, then
