Latest / Sri Aurobindo Studies / Distrust and Disobedience in the Practice of Yoga Interferes With the Action of the Force
Transcript
- 0:00We like to believe that we are independent actors in control of
- 0:04our own destiny and our own lines of development.
- 0:08We want freedom to express ourselves.
- 0:11The ego personality acting in the outside world is very much a
- 0:16captive of past energies, whether those of the formation
- 0:20of physical and vital life or those that have been acquired
- 0:24and developed through the process of evolution of the
- 0:28mental power. We have been educated,
- 0:31pressured, traumatized and socialized to make certain
- 0:36decisions and act in certain ways, all while believing that
- 0:41we are free and independent actors while we are engaged in
- 0:47the life of the world. All of this has very little
- 0:50importance as we somehow get through the life situations and
- 0:54deal with the issues that arise. When we take up spiritual
- 0:58sadhna, however, a different set of criteria comes to the
- 1:02forefront. The entire principle of
- 1:06spiritual growth is to successively tune the being to
- 1:09the higher spiritual force, be receptive to it, and allow it to
- 1:14act to carry out the changes that go beyond what is possible
- 1:19for our physical, vital, mental self.
- 1:23This implies following the guidance and direction of the
- 1:26psychic being and the spiritual guidance to which it adheres.
- 1:31In this context, any deviation following suggestions of the
- 1:36mind, the vital or the physical body represents A distortion
- 1:42which weakens the connection and interferes with the higher
- 1:46force. The adherence to the spiritual
- 1:49truth of the being develops excessively to encompass not
- 1:53only the inward acceptance and recognition, but eventually also
- 1:58the acceptance and support of the mind, the vital being and
- 2:03the physical body to the pressure for change and
- 2:07transformation that the Force is bringing with it.
- 2:11This is the unification of the entire being around the
- 2:14spiritual principle and the influence of the psychic being,
- 2:20Srioro Bindu observes quote. The difficulty must have come
- 2:26from distrust and disobedience, for distrust and disobedience
- 2:30are like falsehood. They are themselves a falsity
- 2:34based on false ideas and impulses.
- 2:37They interfere in the action of the power, prevent it from being
- 2:41felt or from working fully, and diminish the force of the
- 2:46protection. Not only in your inward
- 2:49concentration, but in your outward acts and movements.
- 2:53You must take the right attitude.
- 2:56If you do that and put everything under the mother's
- 2:59guidance, you will find that difficulties begin to diminish,
- 3:03or are much more easily got over, and things become steadily
- 3:08smoother. In your work and acts you must
- 3:12do the same as in your concentration open to the
- 3:15mother. Put them under her guidance,
- 3:18call in the peace, the supporting power, the
- 3:22protection, and in order that they may work, reject all wrong
- 3:27influences that might come in their way by creating wrong,
- 3:31careless or unconscious movements.
- 3:35Follow this principle and your whole being will become one
- 3:39under one rule in the peace and sheltering power and light.
