- 0:33I'm still a little bump in my to do it quicker.
- 0:39And welcome back to a hamster with a blunt penknife the Doctor
- 0:44Who commentary podcast. Well done.
- 0:51I forgot the rest of it, but it's fine.
- 0:52It's fine. I'm sure you can tidy that up.
- 0:57Oh, I thought that was your intro intro.
- 0:59Yeah, who are you? Who are you?
- 1:04You're mr. Joe.
- 1:06I don't know who I am. Who am I?
- 1:10You are The Marvelous to Fabulous their charismatic.
- 1:13The intelligent mr. Jeff got on.
- 1:16Hello. Hello.
- 1:18It's been a each's. Last time I saw you was on peled
- 1:22on, so we wasn't all my God. That was a fucking brilliant
- 1:27recording, one are wide so much fun with that.
- 1:29I love that story. I don't want a loose always
- 1:32spoke about cuz put on too much. I doing that but then my great
- 1:38conversation. We did we did and we're going
- 1:43back into new. Who now we are definitely go
- 1:46back into new. Ooh-hoo.
- 1:48And would you indulge me for a second because I had today we're
- 1:54talking about Jodi whiskers regeneration story The Paradox.
- 1:58Oh, I know, I know you're right. Yeah.
- 2:02Okay. There is a huge chance.
- 2:04I'm going to cry. We'll meet her as what is one
- 2:08particular bit as well, but gets me every time but I had a queue
- 2:13of people a mile long come at me to record.
- 2:17All this episode. Oh really?
- 2:20Yeah, I did. And and people like I do it can
- 2:22either card that are sent over. No.
- 2:25I there's only one person is going to record power.
- 2:28The doctor with me and that is the person who are considered to
- 2:32be the ambassador for the Jodie Whittaker.
- 2:35Tara. I think maybe for Our
- 2:37Generation, I might be. Yeah, I mean there's a lot of
- 2:42young vibrant energetic Doctor Who fans who have been amazing.
- 2:47Ambassadors for every year our and and championed it.
- 2:51Yeah yeah I think and I think there and plenty of people of
- 2:56Our Generation that love it. Yes.
- 2:58But in terms of pure love for this era offer, you're the one
- 3:04and before we even talk about the episode in question will you
- 3:09just give me a little taste of what you think about this era
- 3:13and what this era means to you. This era has been it's just been
- 3:22a joy for me because it's the first time since Doctor Who came
- 3:29back that I've connected to it in the same way that I connected
- 3:33to Doctor Who as a kid growing up in the 80s, it has struck all
- 3:40those. Same old familiar chords with me
- 3:44from Music to the doctor to the companions to the stories.
- 3:52It's, it's just, it's been magical.
- 3:57And it's got me personally, through some very trying times.
- 4:02I mean, all of us went through lockdown and a lot of as met
- 4:08because of block down, or at least started talking ins or
- 4:12this fashion where we can see low, Which was magnificent.
- 4:17And I've made some great friends and connections through all of
- 4:21that and all in the background was Jodie Whittaker as the
- 4:26doctor. And then she did that video,
- 4:28where she's in the cupboard hiding from sontarans, what a
- 4:33gift that was, what are the children that were going through
- 4:36the pandemic, you know. And but also during lockdown, we
- 4:46Going through my wife's cancer treatment.
- 4:49So she was having chemo and then radiotherapy and she'd had two
- 4:55surgeries. And he was a difficult, it was a
- 4:58difficult time with a lot of pressure and a lot of stress,
- 5:02but Doctor, Who was there to give me hope and a light to
- 5:10just, if I couldn't see the light, at the end of the tunnel
- 5:14Doctor, Who was the torch that Letting me see where I was
- 5:17putting my feet if you know what I mean and Jody is the the sort
- 5:25of like the bright Center of that light as well.
- 5:29So yeah, it's it's just been a wonderful.
- 5:34Wonderful era that has evoked pure Doctor Who for me in the
- 5:42way. I think we've gone through was a
- 5:47bit five years since she's been the doctor.
- 5:49And I think that we've gone through five really dark years
- 5:54like politically in terms of health the pandemic and I feel
- 6:01like everyone's feeling it, you know, everyone is thick.
- 6:08It's a sank tangible in the air and for me, yeah, you're right.
- 6:13Like this right of sunshine that has shown for it and I don't
- 6:20know if it's the smile, I don't know if it's the performance.
- 6:24The Charisma. I don't know if it's how she's
- 6:27written something about her. Dogs are just makes me smile.
- 6:32When I'm in a really bad dark place, she makes me smile.
- 6:37I remember those flaps episodes coming out.
- 6:39I was not in a great place but for an hour a week, I was just
- 6:43having a A ball, it was energetic and fun, and exciting
- 6:47and right at the heart of it all was Jodie, Whittaker just being
- 6:50dazzling. Yeah, I get it, I absolutely get
- 6:55it. And I think the thing ever,
- 6:56really broke her spirit, and because nothing ever broke her
- 7:00spirit, even though she went through dark times as a
- 7:03character as well, and she went through uncertainty, and she
- 7:07went through trauma and I think a lot of us Out during lockdown
- 7:15that maybe Old Wounds reopened as well and Things From the Past
- 7:20because you have all of this time you have all of this time
- 7:24on your hands and stuff just comes back.
- 7:30This is why we occupy ourselves so much as a species we have to
- 7:36because we have to keep moving forwards because otherwise the
- 7:40weight of the past can pull you back a little bit and that's
- 7:43very Very much, what sort of Jodi's doctors Arc has been is
- 7:49is releasing herself from the weight of the past, which that
- 7:55kind of came to a close in legends of the sea Devils?
- 7:57Really that the ark which gave us.
- 8:00Now, this this chance to just have a celebration at the end of
- 8:07the SAS, going to say you want to talk about the weight of the
- 8:10past in this last episode. There's a, there's a hello.
- 8:13White in this, I'm telling you, but all of that was there was a
- 8:18lot of happy memories in the hole.
- 8:21This is the power of the doctor is just an enormous celebration,
- 8:25isn't it? It's a love letter to Doctor Who
- 8:29as a whole. So we go right back to the 60s
- 8:31with Ian, right through the 70s, Jose there, right through the
- 8:3680s, with Tegan, an ace right through the 90s.
- 8:39The plot is a bloody rip off of the TV movie with the master.
- 8:43Oh great. Another Booth trying to take
- 8:47their life. It's got, I always dress for the
- 8:50occasion or all the way through new who and there is a
- 8:54celebration of Jodi's there as well, with Dan Bradley Walsh
- 8:57coming back in. Yeah, you know.
- 8:59Oh man. Oh, man.
- 9:00How could you not love this one? Exactly.
- 9:03It's it's, I mean, I we've recorded last night before
- 9:09Gallifrey is Most Wanted. The episode is up and out
- 9:12already because Ross, In about an hour.
- 9:15I'm fabulous swim. We talked last night, how this
- 9:20was about the fact that doctor who has been a part of the BBC
- 9:24for a very nearly 60% of its lifespan, which is really
- 9:30incredible. It has been a huge part.
- 9:32Whether it's been on the screen for all of that time, doesn't
- 9:35really matter. Because once Doctor, Who was
- 9:37established, and when it first went away, he continued and
- 9:43enjoy. Lord.
- 9:43And it was still referenced on BBC, and there were repeats and
- 9:48there were celebrations. And we got things like
- 9:50Dimensions In Time, whether you like it or not, we got it.
- 9:55I heard some people say this is dimensions in time at 90 minutes
- 9:58long. You know what their what their
- 10:00is a bit. That reminds me of dimensions in
- 10:02time and it's to do with those shifting doctors, that is so
- 10:06dimensions. In time there are so many little
- 10:09subtle nod to the past the What, you know.
- 10:14I don't know if you know this. I know this on Fair Authority,
- 10:20that potentially, this might have been the last episode of
- 10:26Doctor Who had Rossi Davis, not sweating with Babble.
- 10:30This potentially might have been the lot and I feel like I don't
- 10:33think I need to be told that watching this because this
- 10:37absolutely is and you know the sort of the the Regeneration
- 10:40which means on the cliff fried out the energy and it comes
- 10:43back. Oh, fuck me.
- 10:45That would have been a great place to end Doctor.
- 10:47Who wouldn't it? I mean, I'm offering hope to the
- 10:50Future smiling about it saying, right.
- 10:52You're next, I mean, that would have been a brilliant way to I'm
- 10:56glad. Yes.
- 10:56Not, you know, don't get me wrong.
- 10:58I'm Rusty. Davis, one of my faves, he's
- 11:00back, I'm sure he's going to do amazing things, but I'll tell
- 11:05you what, as a tail end to this era, and as a celebration of dr.
- 11:11Awful. This was Practically Perfect.
- 11:14I would put this above Day of the Doctor for, for a
- 11:18celebration ezel. That's what my Mark said to me
- 11:21this morning. He said exactly the same thing
- 11:23that is people that are think we're mad saying that, but I
- 11:25agree with you as well. Yes.
- 11:28Yeah, look. This era has been Plagued by
- 11:38animosity, from certain sections of the Doctor Who fan base and
- 11:46there have been some very legitimate complaints and there
- 11:50have been some completely illegitimate complaints and
- 11:57people might think we're mad for proclaiming to be Doctor Who
- 12:02fans yet enjoying the Jodie, Whittaker 10.
- 12:07I'm not just how day you're enjoying dirty.
- 12:09Miss Perry. Dang, ol yourself.
- 12:12And I've had people say that to me online.
- 12:14I from the day, she was cast and I put up a thing on Facebook
- 12:20because I don't think I was even on Twitter, really then not
- 12:24much. Anyway, I put something up on
- 12:27Facebook and within a minute, I'd have a message from someone
- 12:32who had been a very good friend online.
- 12:35For a long time. Say how are you okay with this?
- 12:41And it just all just went warm-up.
- 12:43Bommarito what's he saying? Like, I honestly, I feel like
- 12:48it's a lot of people are kind of the impression that this
- 12:52Insidious corner of fandom started with this era, and I
- 12:57haven't asked for at all. I think it started building from
- 12:59Rusty, Davis. It got a lot worse.
- 13:01During Steven Moffat, it's time, and I think he went through hell
- 13:04and they got a bloody death. Ray he came off social media,
- 13:07you know, because somebody couldn't separate Write fiction
- 13:11from fact and started sending out difference.
- 13:14And I feel like because the so many changes were made, like a
- 13:19female doctor. So many firsts happened here, we
- 13:23had our first doctor of color, you know, it brought out the
- 13:29worst in some people and you know what?
- 13:33I don't think. I don't think we should give
- 13:35them too much attention in this because, no, I'm glad you
- 13:40brought. It up because I definitely
- 13:41something that's there. And it cannot, it's the elephant
- 13:44in the room that has to be addressed and then shooed away
- 13:47because it's not worthy. I've always said, I'm here to
- 13:51celebrate Doctor Who because it's my favorite TV show and I
- 13:54love it all. Even the B.
- 13:56I don't like I love because it's Doctor Who and can I can I say
- 14:02one thing that I think children who had the last laugh and you
- 14:05know why go? Because the plot of this story
- 14:10Effectively is the master talked earlier attempted to cancel.
- 14:15The dogs are. Yeah, I'm turning back into a
- 14:19man awful. All my God, this is genius.
- 14:22Like I mean I don't, I don't know if people didn't just have
- 14:26a like, an old, the doctor, the master should be the doctor or
- 14:28whatever. He's actually leading into this,
- 14:30but if he is fair play to you, sir, that is not ignorant of
- 14:34what's going on on places. It's Jeff.
- 14:38How can you tell you must know? No you know families.
- 14:41It's the worst of the worst is quite a small bunch of people
- 14:45but they shout the loudest and they try to drown out any
- 14:51opposing voice because that's that's the method of people.
- 14:56Like that is to is to just use a bullhorn where whisper would
- 15:02suffice you know it's but you know right?
- 15:07You know, the ultimate winners this.
- 15:09Yeah. Because you May say it at all,
- 15:11going about this at the other end of this era.
- 15:14Having loved what's calm? Having a door the finale.
- 15:17You've got Jody whiskers had the time of her life and she's just
- 15:21backed away all these criticisms and Ford.
- 15:24Fantastic friendships with the people that she's worked with,
- 15:27you know, and done amazing work. That that is a legacy now
- 15:31because you'll always be the first female doctor.
- 15:35You've got Chris, chibnall who, you know, probably has received
- 15:38a fair amount of battering Throughout this time, and he's
- 15:42got this amazing body of work. Now that of Doctor Who that he's
- 15:45put out, you know? And there are there is
- 15:48absolutely an enormous fan base for his era.
- 15:50It just not quite as loud as the idiots over there.
- 15:54That screaming really, really, really loud know exactly.
- 15:57But at the end of the day, I can only see week.
- 16:02No all only appreciate it in our own way and we can all only
- 16:07enjoy doctor Doctor, Who is a unique personal experience and
- 16:12all of us feel it and react to it differently and then it's
- 16:17finding common ground between Between those all where we can
- 16:23all agree or just share the bits that we do, really, like,
- 16:28without trying to bring down the bits, that maybe we don't like
- 16:31as much. You know, it's come to the
- 16:34conclusion was saying, well, I did the dominators with Fraser
- 16:37the other week, right? I've come to the conclusion.
- 16:40That all these wonderful people are surrounded myself in this
- 16:42hand fan. Yeah, we've got our own fan.
- 16:45Now, you know, is that I've just come to I love it.
- 16:48Oh, now because there's someone that they love Enough of managed
- 16:52to follow those people that love every story, and every era.
- 16:55And this thing's just become a massive loving.
- 16:57Now, for those of who it's marvelous, I'll tell ya, but
- 16:59that's what that's what we need. We need more of that.
- 17:02The trouble is is and I'm sure you probably know this.
- 17:04That doesn't sell as well as being angry about something
- 17:08online, you know, you know what, but it's get it does the
- 17:18difference between Being genuine about something and seeing an
- 17:25opportunity and maybe not being as genuine about something you
- 17:32know, just just realizing that you can you can make money out
- 17:38of people but it's get it. So that's the difference between
- 17:46being genuine about something and An opportunity and maybe not
- 17:53being as genuine about something, you know, just just
- 17:59realizing that you can you can make money out of being angry is
- 18:07a very lucrative market and it would be easy to do because I
- 18:10can run with the best of them. But that's not me.
- 18:15So, you should you be talking about the Steven Moffat era, but
- 18:18you know what? Either celebrate, what's their
- 18:20know? Because I think half of what
- 18:22Moffat per hour during this time was absolutely wonderful.
- 18:24You know, there's always something good to take away from
- 18:27any Doctor Who episode. There's always something that
- 18:30you can latch onto and go. Yes, this more of this, please,
- 18:35you know, it's very easy to find bits that you like.
- 18:40It's a little easier to find. That you don't know.
- 18:44Like do you know though this something you did you personally
- 18:48did and said to me when we were doing our think it was
- 18:51resolution. I think that fundamentally
- 18:55changed how I was looking at Doctor Who certainly from the
- 18:59flux through the power of the doctor.
- 19:01And that was how this era threw up like striking and beautiful
- 19:08imagery. And I swear to God every time
- 19:11now there's a attic CGI landscape and this episode was
- 19:16absolutely full of dazzling injury.
- 19:19I just see your face. I think you they're getting all
- 19:22excited. Makes me smile so much, man.
- 19:28Oh man, whether it was a pandemic so they couldn't do as
- 19:33much location work or whatever. Reason I feel like from this
- 19:38series 13, in terms of the visual nature of dogs who fuck
- 19:43they are. Game, like it's just full of
- 19:47beautiful and like, you know, like what's that place called
- 19:50time in the Flack season? You know, we've all the floating
- 19:53trying this guy. Yeah.
- 19:55And the women on the podiums and you had like the Landscapes that
- 20:00were like Roman Roman buildings. Yeah, I mean I could just list
- 20:06either. The, Daleks the way, the Daleks
- 20:08were shot in like the dark in that throughout the building
- 20:12going up at the And the doctor and Jazz under the sea, in
- 20:16Legend of the thedoublel lit up, like the visual palette has just
- 20:23been extraordinary, I think. And I think they saved the money
- 20:28and the best for last, because this episode was packed full of
- 20:32memorable images. Yes, he was.
- 20:35I'm looking forward to watching it again because like I said to
- 20:38you before, I think we hit record, this is only my second
- 20:43wallet. I've saved myself for you.
- 20:47It's my sick. I'm so sorry I've been cheating
- 20:49on you with my TV. So I just got.
- 20:52This is the first time I've had to re-watch something over and
- 20:54over again, since probably since roughly Davis this time where
- 20:57I've just desperately wanted to take in every body is I think
- 21:00it's all the Easter eggs to the past.
- 21:02I've been trying to find all the different he's you know the to
- 21:04tardises and logopolis the bits of the TV movie.
- 21:08Yeah. All of it.
- 21:09The little references and things that are just almost thrown
- 21:13away. Way it all.
- 21:18All brings to mind. Glimpses of pastori's past
- 21:25Adventures past companions, past everything.
- 21:28They are, you know, what bit? I'm going to be really rude now,
- 21:30but you know about really made me cover, my hands was went,
- 21:33vegan was going up that lift shop and the Simon started
- 21:36bursting through the walls. I was like, it's doing of shock.
- 21:39Yes. Yeah.
- 21:41When they break out of the cylinders.
- 21:43Yeah, I'll try because I'm scared for out this common
- 21:48drugs. Make a, oh my God, that's the
- 21:50bit from Zion. I will try not to just go by
- 21:53that, it would be very easy, obvious to do that and it's also
- 21:56going to be very easy. I was because of the way, this
- 21:59podcast Works to miss quite a bit as well, but but we know, we
- 22:06know what's in. We know what's going on.
- 22:09What and, you know, as well because I was really scared.
- 22:12This was going to be a bit of a hot mess when I knew it was
- 22:14going to have all of these elements a masterís Rasputin,
- 22:18you know, Kate Stewart, Ace Teigen.
- 22:21Those departures, you know, Dan the doctor and Yaz going.
- 22:26Yeah. All that and more I was like
- 22:28man. That's a lot for an
- 22:30hour-and-a-half. How the hell, I'll tell you
- 22:32what, he batted this plot in to cut and he was doing his thing
- 22:37that you're not always starts all he's done since Flats, which
- 22:39is having a lot of balls in the air.
- 22:41There's a lot going on but it is focused through a narrative.
- 22:46That is very clear. Action and stuff to see you
- 22:51through as well. I found it very easy to follow.
- 22:56There's one scene that doesn't quite get an explanation but
- 23:00I've already come up with my own head Canon for it so it's fine
- 23:04if you could would you mind pointing out when we get there?
- 23:06Yeah. Well, look, I mean, I don't know
- 23:10about you before you giving this a fair bit, a love.
- 23:12But should we, should we head in?
- 23:13Should we head head? The hell in?
- 23:17Okay, I've got to say one thing, straight from the off though,
- 23:20before we even press play, right?
- 23:22I've got this obsession with things set on trains.
- 23:25I love story set on trains. When this opened up with that.
- 23:28Train going through space. They're on the roof.
- 23:30Mad. It could have had a better start
- 23:32for me. I'm sorry.
- 23:35All right, we're going from five or three five, okay. 54, 321
- 23:46play. What were your expectations of
- 23:51this? I didn't have any.
- 23:53Oh that's that's a good place to start.
- 23:55I try. I don't like going into Doctor
- 23:58Who with expectations because I used to do that all the time and
- 24:04is never never pans out. Yeah exactly.
- 24:07And I think I think a lot of people's expectations of this
- 24:10series all of this area as a whole was was what set them on
- 24:18the wrong foot from the start they had expectations whereas
- 24:22I'd like to get taken on the journey Oddly, I just want it
- 24:27fascinating, you know, that we started the ERA with a complete
- 24:30absence of continuity, and we ended the era on the biggest
- 24:35love letters, dogs, who we've ever had, yes.
- 24:37But I spoke with Ross and Vic about that last night, those
- 24:41Cybermen in that smoke and that light, by the way are absolutely
- 24:45gorgeous women, should we just stay from the off that Jamie
- 24:48Magnus Stone? If one of the best directors
- 24:51that doctor who has ever had, I think all the work is done, a
- 24:54doctor who has been fun All the like it.
- 24:56Yes. Yeah I mean I put he must have
- 24:59got this script on for bloody hell.
- 25:01There's a lot happening. How am I gonna pull this
- 25:03together? Well what he does it I never go
- 25:07cyber Masters. We love cyber Masters which I
- 25:11invented by the way I was like oh boy that is Camp.
- 25:17That is Campo sidemen with the big collars and all of that and
- 25:20now I'm just like that's a fucking great concept.
- 25:24So regenerate its why not? I mean I did that Mundus Ian
- 25:33cyber time law picture like yes, five six years ago now and the
- 25:41concept of the doctor coming out of the time War finding
- 25:44Gallifrey and having been taken over by Cybermen.
- 25:50Like any other planet that the Cybermen take over and the -
- 25:54ability. Then they talk about that.
- 25:56I'm Peter Capaldi's Last Story. Well can alternate story, which
- 26:00is which is that where there's people?
- 26:03There comes Cyberman. Yeah, why not Gallifrey?
- 26:07I mean what everybody as that's their end game and yeah,
- 26:12absolutely total conversion. It's Absolutely amazing.
- 26:19But it also means as well, their citement.
- 26:20No. Just keep coming.
- 26:21You'll shoot them and they will generate and they'll keep
- 26:24coming. And that's scary.
- 26:25That is scary. Let's go.
- 26:27Oh, now, look, that's not in this for long now, we do.
- 26:31I feel like we need to give down a little bit of attention here.
- 26:34Yeah, yeah, I've really enjoyed Dan, but he's, he doesn't read.
- 26:44His Arc is a very simple one. Which is realizing that you
- 26:51wants to make more of his life and not just be the guy that we
- 26:55met in the Halloween apocalypse. You know, he where he's a bit of
- 27:01a loser drills into you. I actually thought his decision
- 27:06that you know what? This is a dangerous life, I
- 27:09wanna die. I want to live my life.
- 27:12I don't I think that's a great conclusion to come to because I
- 27:14figured that was me in the goddess and I was On they're
- 27:17being chased by Simon down this train ceiling.
- 27:20I'm like it's know what if I make it out of this?
- 27:23Yeah I'll go back to watching Doctor Who on the TV rather than
- 27:27experience it in real life, you know?
- 27:29Yes, I would like to say Joe Sims is the man, they're in the
- 27:34train and he plays Mark 7 in the big finish Adventures.
- 27:38So I think there's even a nod to Big finish here as well.
- 27:42Well yeah. I think there's more than a few
- 27:47nods to Big finishing. Thank it will Tegan mentions two
- 27:50husbands and that is established in big finish.
- 27:53So I thought all right, quite tasty as well.
- 27:55Wow, look at this there was his suit is cracked.
- 27:59They're walking across the ceiling of this trade.
- 28:01The Cybermen are advancing on them one.
- 28:07I may have made a mistake not watching it six times before
- 28:11because I'm just transfixed again.
- 28:15Don't worry, I'll try to keep you on track.
- 28:17All right. I love the fact that the tunnel
- 28:19they're going down. Looks like a very colorful
- 28:21version of like a classic Doctor Who title sequence as well.
- 28:26It's beautiful though, isn't it? Well, I mean we're going to talk
- 28:29about the beautiful imagery, I love.
- 28:31I love that sort of tunnel effect.
- 28:33Dad's really funny in a minute where it goes.
- 28:35Hello, this is What I'm talking on this funny and they picked
- 28:43the right guy to play him because he's a natural comedian.
- 28:47Anyway, I think his best beers like the bit were knocked out
- 28:53the sontaran and then turn around and went.
- 28:55Hey, all right, Lads know which ways the pier dead.
- 29:02Wait in front of the darling River and Over The Darlings,
- 29:05where he confronts the do is walk and he's just walking
- 29:07around him to evade his fire. It's a shame, he doesn't get a
- 29:14bigger part in this because he was quite a big part of flux,
- 29:18but yeah, but this It needs to be something.
- 29:23Have to get to be Jody and man Deb.
- 29:26Yes. Yeah, the end had to be Jody.
- 29:29Amanda. Yeah, he could.
- 29:31Maybe have left a bit further into the episode like when they
- 29:35first got back to Earth but when there was someone in the tower
- 29:39this maybe he could have left them but It feels like a bit of
- 29:48a slight to his character to boot him out by either the title
- 29:52cycle. As she went, all the father's
- 29:55about about to start, you know, far maybe, you know, maybe it
- 30:00was one element too many. Yes.
- 30:02Yeah. He's got a lot of companions in
- 30:07this episode. The doctor.
- 30:09She loves a full tower. This doesn't she?
- 30:11So here's a but also as well, he's having to do Obviously,
- 30:15he's doing what for goodbyes, he technically does the goodbye
- 30:19between Tegan and the fifth doctor.
- 30:21The goodbye between ice and the Seventh Doctor, the goodbye
- 30:25between Yaz and the 13th doctor and they could fly between.
- 30:30And you know what? You got, kind of got up pace
- 30:32them a bit, otherwise if you stick them all at the end, it's
- 30:34going to feel like Return of the King.
- 30:37Yeah, exactly. Which goes on for half-an-hour
- 30:39after the film's Finish. Its yeah.
- 30:43Jesus Christ. This is indulgent I thought When
- 30:45I was watching that movie and we supposed to think that I kid was
- 30:48a Timeless child, because that's what I thought when I was
- 30:50watching. I was my initial first.
- 30:52I love that Janet and safety both got their names in the
- 30:55title sequence as well ago. Yeah, that's proper lies, Jeff.
- 31:00You've not heard excitement that you're going to hear from me
- 31:01when those two you appear in this.
- 31:03All right. Okay, can I walk on very
- 31:07quickly, ask you then before things really, really kickoff.
- 31:13Do you think it was a smart move to not lean into the Timeless?
- 31:17Child? The watch all of that in this?
- 31:20Yes, yeah, because that's the doctors Journey.
- 31:23The doctors Journey was reaching the point that she realized the
- 31:27past doesn't actually matter. She's already lived a full life
- 31:33and more I mean, they're in that next regeneration cycle, it gave
- 31:39us a glimpse that there is more to the doctors past.
- 31:45It gave us a who back in Doctor, Who a little bit.
- 31:51And it also gave us that guarantee that the doctor can go
- 31:55on for quite a bit longer yet in in whatever format Doctor Who
- 32:00continues as the Timeless child. Mi the doctor to continue, and
- 32:08that's really all it needed to do.
- 32:10It's also give them big finish. Yeah.
- 32:14Oh boy. Roof Doctor has after towards
- 32:18Master are on their way. I can't wait.
- 32:20Did you know what is lot of it? Kind of Hit Men.
- 32:24It was like a message to fans who kind of like, you know,
- 32:27pigeonholing the dock the first or the second doctor, you know,
- 32:30having a chronology, everything being in place.
- 32:33Actually, what the time is. Child of God.
- 32:35Does is it says whatever you think you know about the doctor,
- 32:38there is always more to know and there's always stuff you ain't
- 32:41gonna know because the title of the show is fucking Doctor Who
- 32:46and because and I've spoken about this before in other
- 32:49places and other times I do to you, it's Doctor Who is the sand
- 32:58pit of whoever is in charge of it and they can make whatever
- 33:01they want in that sampat and they can bring whatever toy.
- 33:05He's in they want to play with but when their times up and it's
- 33:09someone else's turn to tend to play in that sound bet it turns
- 33:12into a completely different. situation, you know, a doctor
- 33:18who is always It's transient thing, but it for a little time,
- 33:26it belongs to whoever's in charge, but then they have, they
- 33:31have to make sure that the sound stays clean and it doesn't get
- 33:34dirty. So that the next person can come
- 33:37and play in it. Yeah.
- 33:39But that's all they have to do. There was just enough as well
- 33:42about the Timeless Char. Like I feel like it worked
- 33:45brilliantly in the fugitive of the judoon because it was a
- 33:49massive mystery in a big What the finally everyone was talking
- 33:53about it and what's it all about, blah, blah, blah, and
- 33:55then the Timeless children here, and it gave us more information.
- 33:58And all right, that was divisive.
- 33:59There were half that kind of loved it, half the hated it.
- 34:04But it was opening the show out in new ways and creative new
- 34:07ways and its people were still talking about how this all makes
- 34:11sense, you know, where you fit in the Roof Doctor and you know,
- 34:15will Jody open the watch and all of this you know it got people
- 34:19discussing this. Yes.
- 34:21Yeah and ultimately I mean mark my position on the time this
- 34:29child was I love it but it doesn't really matter.
- 34:33Yeah. You know I do adore the concept
- 34:37that the doctor has had all of these previous existences so
- 34:42that it does it does sort of canonize the morbius doctors and
- 34:47things like that. And it means that there is now
- 34:52If people want to, and that's not just big finish, that's not
- 34:57even licensed, people, that's fanfic writers.
- 34:59That's artist. Is anyone can go back of each
- 35:02phrase and turn a little bit of that playground.
- 35:06That got some pit into their own.
- 35:09Yeah, and make of it, what they will.
- 35:11I should never thought of it that way but I know explaining
- 35:14everything that's giving people carte blanche to fill in those
- 35:17blanks, isn't it? Absolutely.
- 35:19Yeah. And in, Was the even if Doctor
- 35:23Who went away from our screens that there would be a whole new
- 35:30swathe of things like the Virgin new adventures we had in the 90s
- 35:37but you can do them with a continuing doctor you can go
- 35:41back and tell stories from before the first doctor you can
- 35:46have places like big finish feeding that as well and they
- 35:51will. I have this potential, I'm sorry
- 35:55to interrupt you but I just God bless Chris, chibnall for going
- 35:58back to Dan shrunken house and how announcer shot.
- 36:02Oh yeah, my house, it's time. And also as well I've got us a
- 36:08ride because we just had a cintiq in, in a minute ago,
- 36:10right. You know, Tegan on the phone and
- 36:13Indonesia wherever she is, that's exactly how my mom used
- 36:15to look down the phone. Oh, oh, she's not quite sure how
- 36:21to use it, you know. I mean I do like the fact that
- 36:26they reference Day of the Doctor as well with the art in the
- 36:29gallery. I think that's definitely an on
- 36:32today of the doctor. Yeah, absolutely.
- 36:34Yeah. Oh and this is a nod to twice
- 36:37Upon a Time with the defective darling.
- 36:40There's gone good? Yes, yeah.
- 36:45I loved that doll. Like he's a nod to the the Dalek
- 36:48Civil Wars of like, remembrance this Aces again.
- 36:54She's mixed in with the DAR legs and the Daleks.
- 36:57Although there's only one in this case, the dialects are
- 37:01pissy about purity again. That's so true of the Daleks I
- 37:07may be feel the Daleks are a little wasted here but I mean
- 37:13this is a celebration of Doctor Who they've got to be in here.
- 37:16They've got to be in the top six and she references davros here
- 37:20as well and your creator would be both impressed and horrified.
- 37:25Yeah, love it. If there was a story, if there
- 37:29was a story to be told at one element of this, that could have
- 37:32been expanded a lot more. It's this individual.
- 37:35I could imagine A whole episode of by play between Jodie
- 37:39Whittaker and a Dalek, who's gone?
- 37:40Goose. I think one of the criticisms of
- 37:43Chris chibnall is that he throws so many ideas into one episode.
- 37:50That could be a whole story in of themselves.
- 37:55Again, kind of like that, it's clear he's not short of ideas,
- 38:01you know, he's got a Doctor Who brain.
- 38:05This is clearly been something that is bubbled away even the
- 38:10way that he's formatted and shaped his Seasons.
- 38:14It's very clear that he had an idea where he was when he
- 38:17started, what he wanted to do and where he wanted to go and
- 38:20where it was going to end up. Can I say as well?
- 38:25I'm doing this now but Master is refusing, right?
- 38:29Okay. Not only do I think the
- 38:30shattered 21 is the absolute Pinnacle this episode.
- 38:34I think his performance, he steals this.
- 38:38It's one of the best performances I've ever seen a
- 38:40doctor. I was riveted every time he was
- 38:42on screen, especially as the Rasputin's master.
- 38:46I so good and and second I can own a score.
- 38:50Yeah, around. They see where he's going like,
- 38:52dude. 222-2222. Well, folks, delgado's Master
- 38:57theme from the seventies. So that was the first thing that
- 39:01struck me watching this scene here, where he does the, he
- 39:06doesn't even need to say it. They say and I will obey you.
- 39:11Well, I don't know if you watched any of the series 8
- 39:15behind the sofa. Porches.
- 39:16Well, this is a guy he's watching, Roger, Delgado, and I
- 39:19think he's done up to the time to children, so that point and
- 39:22he goes, wow. He's really still.
- 39:24And he's so menacing I know when I was watching this, I was like,
- 39:27you've taken knows, because he suddenly really contained.
- 39:31But only is this version of the master only as this one.
- 39:36Yeah he is his regular Master self that we saw in season 12 or
- 39:43serious. 12. He he does he doesn't.
- 39:48It's the way he stood there with his hand across across his the
- 39:52bottom of his Fast. And that is so Delgado.
- 39:57He's so Delgado in that soon. You want that beautiful images?
- 40:01What about this room that they're in?
- 40:02And that's not. That is a genuine location.
- 40:05It's gorgeous, isn't me? Yeah, and you know what, right?
- 40:09This is the king Steamers, isn't it?
- 40:10It's the master in a ludicrous disguise in the past.
- 40:14Yeah, yeah, even the Kings demons is being celebrated here
- 40:20and rightly. So I quite like the Kings
- 40:22demons. Are you and Jason Miller.
- 40:24I think you might be the only But, you know, but no, I, I was
- 40:31incredibly impressed with sagittal on in this.
- 40:33I've loved his master, always her.
- 40:34I think he's almost, I fall is something else when he goes from
- 40:380 to the master, but oh my God, you saw that breathless imagery.
- 40:42Did you see that zoom in onto the planet?
- 40:44Yeah, gorgeous, totally gorgeous.
- 40:48I read that. It's about, is Star Wars good?
- 40:51That it's that you asked Quarry, I think when they superimposed,
- 40:55But great domes and cities. This is Smokies is going off in
- 40:59the background. There's light playing over the
- 41:03landscape behind the tomb where we are watching this.
- 41:06I said tomorrow, I love the fact that there's smoke billowing out
- 41:09of the planet because it makes it feel like it's a machine.
- 41:13Yeah, yeah. Yeah, exactly.
- 41:15Exactly. And that time, dance hardest.
- 41:18Yeah. What's that evoking?
- 41:20The Godless. Yeah, exactly.
- 41:22It. Look, I know what all is.
- 41:25Well ha ha ha. That's really a joker.
- 41:29That's so well, that's evoking every Master going is always
- 41:34laughing his head off. Yeah.
- 41:37This, the cinematography inside this dark targets, we've all the
- 41:41the dry-ice pumping. Now takes us back to the Sim
- 41:45Master with that with that engine that he did in the
- 41:49doctors Tardis, the end of all the Paradox, it made me think of
- 41:59when they go into the other side is that it's a lot darker.
- 42:01It gets darker and darker and darker than wall, they got and
- 42:04then suddenly they come back into their own on I take my I'll
- 42:09I really am quite keen on the Jodie.
- 42:11Whittaker console room. I know some people, I'm I really
- 42:14like kind of how beautiful it is but I find when they turn the
- 42:17lights down like that and they did the same thing in.
- 42:20Can you hear me? There's lots of blue and it just
- 42:25looks striking. It reminds me of the time
- 42:30monster Tower this with the washing bowls on the wall it
- 42:34reminds me of that. Because I love those those
- 42:44hexagons that are back from the console that they remind me of
- 42:48that so much because they add depth to the Tar.
- 42:51This and they had a different play of Shadow and light in
- 42:57there, which damn all about this quarrying.
- 43:01So this is a real good example of when I was watching it,
- 43:04thinking of you the sort of this Youthful jellyfish with tendrils
- 43:08of energy coming home soon. Cyber Planet.
- 43:11I was like my God is this is this the imagery with working
- 43:15with these eyes and Doctor Who which is crazy?
- 43:18Isn't it rarely when you think about what Doctor Who is and its
- 43:23roots? And the fact that we're at a
- 43:27point where we're still missing so much of its history yet
- 43:33Doctor Who now is being presented like a big budget.
- 43:36It sci-fi movie. And in fact, better than some
- 43:41Sci-Fi movies, you know. Oh, my God, and did you say that
- 43:47the way he lifted up his fists that Cyberman?
- 43:49Yeah, that's very David Banks, isn't it?
- 43:54He went on Twitter. The fellow who plays him and
- 43:56said it was a, it was a not today with bank, so fantastic.
- 44:00Okay bro, I'll take that and this bit here, right way.
- 44:04It can used to it though. They're in the middle of this
- 44:05adventure. On the Cyber planet and then
- 44:08along comes another adventure and she's like, can it?
- 44:10Wait, no. That's the clever thing about
- 44:15this episode. Is that the doctor keeps getting
- 44:18pulled to different things and then realize is that actually
- 44:24these aren't different things. Well, it is a thing Jeff that
- 44:28the doctor does generally tend to have these linear Adventures.
- 44:31Yeah, nothing else interrupts in fact, in real life, if you were
- 44:33bouncing about all over time and space, I think These are
- 44:36Ventures would converge if only the dialects is invaded in the
- 44:40Armageddon Factor. We'd have a much better story.
- 44:46Therefore it. Oh my God, here we go. 13 with
- 44:52Ace and Tegan or she's a right stroppy mayor and she chimel
- 44:56knows exactly how to characterize that.
- 44:58He's not going to make her soft like, you know, like he could
- 45:01have done it. No, he's just like she's pissed
- 45:04as hell as she always was. Yeah.
- 45:11And I love case you in this, you know, I have been a bit distant
- 45:15with kstuart especially with her big finish performances.
- 45:18She showed a bit arranging this. It's actually listening to her
- 45:21big finish, stuff that I've begun to, appreciate kstuart.
- 45:26I've only heard a few, maybe I should keep going.
- 45:30They're really solid really solid stories.
- 45:36We have we got to a point. Now we're bringing back classic
- 45:40companions with new doctors is old hat.
- 45:43Or is it still exciting? Well on TV, we've only really
- 45:52had it once before well twice before.
- 45:55But both times were Sarah. These are the first returning
- 46:00classic companions now but does it need to be done again?
- 46:06Probably not for a bit. Yeah.
- 46:08Yeah. But I think they're well-chosen
- 46:10actually and they contribute to the story in different ways.
- 46:15And I thought honestly Tegan, I can't stop laughing of that bit
- 46:19where she goes, and yes, I would like to go into the Tardis Janet
- 46:27Fielding. Crazy isn't it?
- 46:32I'm Alberto. So that's point out that such as
- 46:35one is the hottest person to ever talk to who died in his
- 46:39various guises in this episode will not too Missy there as well
- 46:44with the screen. Yeah.
- 46:46Where it comes up that that bit in.
- 46:51Oh God. Which is familiar?
- 46:55No, the first one. Magician's Apprentice.
- 46:58Oh, Yes. Yeah, it's been a while.
- 47:01I watched it for a while. I want to be honest.
- 47:05I've seen our I'm going to. This is my one of a couple of
- 47:09moments where I was just like, really this whole Professor.
- 47:13You're really staticky. I was like, what clearly
- 47:17something has been set up it but it was a bit awkward.
- 47:19Yes. Yeah.
- 47:20I thought it was to do with the impending regeneration or - I
- 47:29wasn't sure. But yeah, it is a bit.
- 47:31Mmm. Oh, can I tell you say it,
- 47:34right? Where this scene is being shot
- 47:35right now. Yeah, yeah, this is the gate in
- 47:39Cardiff where my Roth used to work and was working the day.
- 47:44They filmed this so he met, so I should warn you met, Jodie,
- 47:48Whittaker, he had lunch with the unit soldiers, that storm in,
- 47:54and basically, so they brought in all of our stuff, right?
- 47:59Yeah. To film the day before and then
- 48:01they were filming the next day and that I told you no don't go
- 48:05in there. So of course, he went in there,
- 48:07didn't he? He found all the little people,
- 48:09he's like, oh my God. But Martha's going to be
- 48:11understands all little people and toys and you never guess
- 48:14what? Jeff some stupid member of the
- 48:17production team. Left a bit of this quick behind
- 48:20about 10, pages of the script. He's been sitting on that ever
- 48:22since. Oh my God, although take an 1/8,
- 48:26we're going to be in this ages before lessons are the Sea Dogs
- 48:30trailer drops because unfortunately add pages them to
- 48:32in it. I may very well.
- 48:37Have known a little in advance as well.
- 48:41It was but I've got a site but it didn't come from you.
- 48:44It was an incredible day said it was an incredible day and you
- 48:49know what? Because he looks at a CCTV
- 48:51footage afterwards and Patio. It's long-winded this filming.
- 48:55I mean, the sequences are amazing.
- 48:56It is worth the time but I spent hours and hours shooting these
- 49:00little scenes. Yeah, I can believe it, I can
- 49:04believe it because they have to do distant shots there.
- 49:07Do closing shots there. There's so much that goes into
- 49:10making a TV program that for us flies by and we go, it's pretty
- 49:18straightforward. But now even the most
- 49:21straightforward scenes of ridiculous.
- 49:23Well, one thing that really struck me was as I read the
- 49:27script. Yeah, that's great.
- 49:30That was left behind was like God some of this dialogue.
- 49:33Sounds really clunky. Like when he's saying pinky
- 49:35promise and things like this, I like watching the episode.
- 49:38I was like, I could see how much the actors bring to script it
- 49:44does. He makes everything sound
- 49:47effortless. I've done a little bit of just
- 49:51messing around writing, rarely and it eats a lot easier as well
- 49:56if you can hear and see the specific actor that you're
- 50:00writing fours performance. So if I'm right in A doctor seen
- 50:08or sentence, then I hear it in his voice and if I can hear it
- 50:12in his voice and I know that I'm along the right lines.
- 50:17So I imagine Chris wrote a lot of this, with Jodi's voice with
- 50:22Sasha's voice with man. Dips voice in his ears.
- 50:26Almost, you know, but there's like one like when she walks in
- 50:31and she's like, bring it all the plot points together.
- 50:33She's going, well, you've got a quarry inks and a cyber planet
- 50:36and another I'll read another page going.
- 50:38How is anyone going to make that sound natural?
- 50:40And then Jodie, Whittaker storms in the room full of Charisma and
- 50:43confidence and she Paces the line, Yoshi structures, the line
- 50:47brilliantly. So all just happens.
- 50:50It's fluid it. All just comes out fluidly and I
- 50:53was like Talan. Yeah, yeah.
- 50:57It's it's, I mean, he knows Jodi really well by now, anyway, I
- 51:02mean, they've worked together for years.
- 51:06So he knows her capabilities probably better than she does.
- 51:11And I wonder if he had to convince her to take this part
- 51:16and say to her, I know you can do this because I think anyone,
- 51:21any actor who got offered the job of the doctor, Would be.
- 51:28A little hesitant at first, at least today.
- 51:31It's a loss wasn't Davison. Yeah, yeah.
- 51:36I love the Masters Panic at. Why the Daleks are contacting
- 51:40the doctor but he knows all along today.
- 51:44Yeah. Yeah.
- 51:45It's Double Bluff again. It's you're right.
- 51:49She goes and she says, you know, there's this happening and then
- 51:52this happening and there's this happening, is this, lots of
- 51:55things happening or is this a one part of one grand scheme?
- 51:58You know and then she's like oh the Masters involved or course
- 52:01it is. Then you know this man thinks on
- 52:04an epic scale. Yeah, contrived.
- 52:08He thinks only contrived scale, but you know what someone said,
- 52:13right? I saw someone put on Twitter if
- 52:15you're telling me that the Masters managed to, you know,
- 52:18Falls. All these deals with the Daleks
- 52:19and the Cybermen, and create a cyber planet and lower the
- 52:23doctor in purely. For the reason to dance to
- 52:26Rasputin in front of all three of them.
- 52:29He said well then that's all the reason that I need.
- 52:32Yeah, that's good enough for me. Where the Dalek at the side,
- 52:37man. Look at each other as, if to
- 52:39say, what is going off? Made me how it laughter.
- 52:45Yeah, I've seen a few people say, oh, that was cringy.
- 52:48I'm right now, just just, just, just relax into the fun of it.
- 52:52Relax into the deep. It was campus fucking Christmas,
- 52:56or for us back in the ground, William zero.
- 52:58And that's the most important thing, because Doctor Who has
- 53:02always been campers Christmas. Oh course it has I'm competing
- 53:08in the original sense of the word as well because Camp was
- 53:13gone through a few sort of. It's always been camp but Camp
- 53:17wasn't originally what we now, think of as Camp.
- 53:21It had a other slightly different intent.
- 53:27I think back in like the sixth late 60s. 70s is what I think
- 53:32maybe back then. It was a little derogatory.
- 53:34Now it? Yes, you're right.
- 53:36Yeah campy maybe maybe let's tear away camping but silly dog.
- 53:40Who's always been silly? No it's all think actually ideas
- 53:44Christmas and that is how I love that bit there where he said to
- 53:51Ace and Tegan. What where's Rodney?
- 53:53Vanessa be built a nice dolls house for her yet.
- 54:00This, this is the bit where I went, he is exactly where he
- 54:05wants to be and that's when I started getting really scared
- 54:09for everyone's well-being. I was like, what do you do?
- 54:14Feel safe? Now that I'm locked in here with
- 54:17you or something like that. But also loved as well, how he
- 54:21was throwing out a couple of I bought Rusty over to the
- 54:23punching the air. He's like I'll boys you know you
- 54:25want to come in the sale and get cozy with me and stuff like
- 54:27that. I was like that bunk up in the
- 54:29Cough. I'm most excited about.
- 54:33I see ghosts about being a cheetah person.
- 54:34Were egos, a man's. Got our experiment.
- 54:37I was like, well, on like chipping, always giving him
- 54:40class a dialogue in this and the was just eating it up.
- 54:46A thing that we've been here a few times as well with the
- 54:49doctrine. Yeah, it's a jazz singer.
- 54:50Know you gotta make time to explain what's going on because
- 54:54I'm just being pushed from Pillar To Post.
- 54:56Yeah. Yeah, it's this this has been
- 55:00Jodi's. Doctor really is not wanting to
- 55:06open up, not wanting to share. Because she doesn't want to hurt
- 55:12anyone and she doesn't want to hurt herself by opening up
- 55:18because the second you start opening up to people, you give
- 55:21them power over you as well. And yeah, as I don't know,
- 55:26there's something about this relationship that she does open
- 55:29up to her at the end of Legends of the sea levels and then at
- 55:32the end of this is ambiguous. And you know what?
- 55:35When I was watching, I was like, oh, please lean in and kiss her.
- 55:37Now, I'm pleased that she didn't because I'm like, No, it's
- 55:40ambiguous issue in love with her, she loves being with her,
- 55:44you can read it how you want? Yes.
- 55:47Yeah, I mean, I think for me, she's clear they clearly in love
- 55:51and they clearly both know that that would only lead to
- 55:56something terrible in the end and that they just can't.
- 56:01I said, I said in the podcast last night, another time,
- 56:05another place and of the way, yeah, they would.
- 56:08Absolutely have. Got to go.
- 56:10Either and lived happily ever after.
- 56:13But it's not this time or this place or this way, the all of
- 56:17their life I love are not skipping rods the end here.
- 56:19But you know, this thing works is always linear the bit where
- 56:22they're sitting on the Tardis that beautiful scene with her
- 56:24and sort of having the ice cream.
- 56:26And they've literally got the whole world in front of them.
- 56:28It's like the whole world of possibilities of their
- 56:31relationship in front of them, and they can't have it.
- 56:33And then she's got to go and she's got a, she's gonna die.
- 56:37I so sad. And it's, but it's lovely as
- 56:39well. Because it is an acknowledgement
- 56:41of how they feel. Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 56:43It's it's a very adult, a very odd or a very not an adult, a
- 56:49very mature way of Verdi's wrong with it.
- 56:54I think we're used to having very in-your-face
- 56:57characterization in the new series and this is done very
- 57:02delicately right at the end. They just let the tears fly and
- 57:07and the doctors even got one tear on her cheek which is and
- 57:11that's when she's in the Tardis. Oh well man dips blubbing arise.
- 57:16Oh my God, Lily broke Faith but after bit always gets me because
- 57:19you know what I feel like when Jody when the doctor says your
- 57:24hands glowing. And she says you know what this
- 57:26means don't you? I feel like then they look at
- 57:29each other and that's not the doctor.
- 57:30And Yaz is Jody a man dip Amanda's got tears in her eyes.
- 57:35It's like yeah this journey is coming to an end and we've had
- 57:37the best time. Yeah, yeah.
- 57:40I'm fine that's very real. It's the bit where Jody has to
- 57:44compose herself when they're talking on the roof of the
- 57:47TARDIS and you can see I have to actually have to bring back some
- 57:53very real emotions as a person, not as the doctor but as Jodie
- 57:59Whittaker, because she's clearly had an absolute blast, but as
- 58:05well, like the line where she says, And my heart's are so full
- 58:11and that's what I think about with this doctor is just
- 58:15spreading love and embracing everybody.
- 58:19I just thought that line was perfect and one skip to the end
- 58:22and we've got side minutes. I can you know I know it's and
- 58:25we've got hasten. Siegen with machine guns.
- 58:29Someone's been reading my wishlist shift the terrifying, a
- 58:33Shad bag Mod 8, the best cyber man ever.
- 58:39Yeah yeah and I do think it's a bit.
- 58:41Indulgent bring it back. Don't get me wrong.
- 58:43But man oh man that performance is so good.
- 58:45Yeah really. Is it really is this bit as well
- 58:49as it comes down the corridor and he's Darth Vader in the crap
- 58:54out of everyone. Like I think even in the new
- 58:57series they don't always get the action right.
- 59:01I certainly think before Jodi's time, sometimes the action will
- 59:04be a little bit awkward. This is muscular.
- 59:07This is proper paste. Explosive you know there's walls
- 59:13exploding you know, it's one of the things I always loved about
- 59:19the Pertwee era is the amount of orange explosions and things
- 59:23like that. But it felt very real like this.
- 59:26Performers are in real Jeopardy of getting clogged and there's a
- 59:31bit of that in this to be found the master in prison.
- 59:34That's the see Devils. Yeah.
- 59:37All Frontier in space, take it back.
- 59:39We can't poke a nose going up like well no actually it if I
- 59:44say. Yeah yeah.
- 59:44Yeah. 'All enemy of the world.
- 59:47Oh yeah. Of course.
- 59:48Yeah, there's so many little Toys.
- 59:53You can make, just make this quintessential, Doctor Who Jodi
- 59:58going inside the Dalek leans into Asylum of the Daleks with
- 1:00:01Clara and sighs. Yeah.
- 1:00:03Yeah. And then and the Witch's
- 1:00:04familiar and we get to see that lovely doll at mutant back
- 1:00:08again, which is my favorite doll.
- 1:00:09Like mutant, I'll book no argument.
- 1:00:13I love those darling mutants. Okay, I'm a little bit
- 1:00:15claustrophobic so I thought I'd been trapped inside.
- 1:00:18One of those dialects like she is in a minute is absolutely.
- 1:00:20And the way Jody just Is it is getting side.
- 1:00:23She just goes, no, but I remember the things just come
- 1:00:27and whip around her. It's tough.
- 1:00:32Cracking. Let's and this is when I got
- 1:00:34really excited and I was like, oh my God, it's Yaz to the
- 1:00:37rescue. Now, she's incredible in this.
- 1:00:41Is she that she really is. I've seen a lot of criticism of
- 1:00:46the way that man the way that Yaz has been written and a
- 1:00:51little bit of criticism of man. Dips performance.
- 1:00:53Yeah. Because they've called her To
- 1:00:56me, she's always been very solid.
- 1:00:58She's been the doctors Rock from day, one?
- 1:01:04And I think Mandeep, does it? Beautifully Yaz is definitely up
- 1:01:10there in the higher echelons of my favorite Doctor Who
- 1:01:14companions, because the longest-serving Doctor Who
- 1:01:16companion. Yeah.
- 1:01:18And she only wanted to go from start to finish as well and an
- 1:01:22entire era. Yeah.
- 1:01:26Oh, here we go, the Masters. Dalek plan cheeky shit, and he,
- 1:01:32well, that does the see an official name for Frontier in
- 1:01:36space and planet of the Daleks isn't it?
- 1:01:41But then does he say, what is it?
- 1:01:42The Cyber dialects. Mileside the master garlic
- 1:01:45plant. Yeah.
- 1:01:48He's picking up his. Oh, and this was brilliant.
- 1:01:51The way he starts taking a piss out.
- 1:01:52You guys were, you've got your fam, I've got more in the Daleks
- 1:01:55on the side men you know. And what is he says, the things
- 1:01:59that unites us is stronger than the things that divide us and
- 1:02:04that is exactly the sort of line that Jodie Whittaker would
- 1:02:06normally say, yeah. Yeah, it's really clever.
- 1:02:12He says it does vary. You that isn't it?
- 1:02:15What's that? He says that line is that's very
- 1:02:18you, that isn't it, what? You know, it says so I think to
- 1:02:22be always aware of the criticisms of the era and he is
- 1:02:26tying some of that into this. Yeah, I haven't having but then
- 1:02:30what he does is you've got the master taking the piss out of
- 1:02:32it. And then the ultimate
- 1:02:34conclusion, the story draws is the power of the doctor are the
- 1:02:37Friendship, she's made along the way, and it's those people that
- 1:02:40all Together to savor in this. Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 1:02:46Without without being too, Twee, it's the friendships that we've
- 1:02:50made through Doctor Who sometimes that have saved us.
- 1:02:54Yeah, yeah, absolutely. Yeah.
- 1:03:01And certainly got us through. lockdown and and there, there
- 1:03:08are people I've spoken to you for the first time during lock
- 1:03:12now, Who are considered friends, you know, who not all of us have
- 1:03:18even met yet but they're still my mates.
- 1:03:21And if they need something I'll be there for, you know, if I
- 1:03:26can't you know I bet sired Fraser get through doing the
- 1:03:32podcast, through doctor who they are like my family.
- 1:03:36Now, you know, they sometimes think some every day there are
- 1:03:39massive support in my life, I'm getting it.
- 1:03:43Wait, I don't care. This is a celebration of Doctor
- 1:03:46Who so let's celebrate what book who's the Doctor Who is more
- 1:03:49than just the TV programmed to, to us fans, Doctor Who is, is
- 1:04:02It's a way of connecting with people who think like we do or
- 1:04:07feel like we do and that stops as making making us feel alone.
- 1:04:14It does. Yeah.
- 1:04:15Jeff Doctor Who, what a absolutely cringe for me to say
- 1:04:19this, but I'm gonna say it. It brought me my mark, you know?
- 1:04:22Yeah. And and change my life for a
- 1:04:25found Lee for the better. Yeah.
- 1:04:27Good. I'm getting very tweet over the
- 1:04:30master dancing to Rasputin. Do you love the way that the
- 1:04:34chandelier goes? All disco?
- 1:04:40Oh my God. It's amazing.
- 1:04:42My girls. Absolutely pop.
- 1:04:44Particularly nice because apparently it's a tick tock
- 1:04:46Trend or some valid. I know, I don't look at
- 1:04:48Tick-Tock but they were like, oh, will you do the dance when
- 1:04:52he did the dance? I was talking about.
- 1:04:57And of course, what I mean, if we are doing this, this is
- 1:05:00leaning into I can't decide from last of the time Lords.
- 1:05:03Yes. Yeah.
- 1:05:05Now, I'm going to say, Chris chibnall is not above looking at
- 1:05:08Rusty Davis's time seeing what work there and playing about
- 1:05:12with those ideas. Again, he does.
- 1:05:13It with the master reveal like he did it with the the
- 1:05:16lighthouse was effectively the human nature watch, wasn't it?
- 1:05:21He does it with the companions around the Tardis, the doctor
- 1:05:23Gathering these people? Yeah.
- 1:05:29It's but each, you know, I really stress.
- 1:05:32Higher towards remind me of David Tennant and the time all
- 1:05:37this is absolutely the two boobs.
- 1:05:40Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:05:42But you know what, for once, right?
- 1:05:44If I want, it's all okay. Like 141, if this was supposed
- 1:05:48to be the final two episode. Then yeah, let's look back at
- 1:05:53everything that worked and celebrates it.
- 1:05:55But to if this is the BBC Centenary story and doctors been
- 1:05:59a big part of that, let's celebrate all of it.
- 1:06:02I don't think you can complain about any of the Easter eggs in
- 1:06:05this. No, none, none.
- 1:06:07And I wouldn't because, You have to look at it.
- 1:06:12This this story has a two-fold job. it has celebrate 60 years
- 1:06:19of Doctor Who or 59 years of Doctor Who And and it's moments
- 1:06:27and its impact on the BBC. And it has to say goodbye to Joe
- 1:06:32you Whitaker and I think it balances it beautifully.
- 1:06:39I agree. I feel like it does everything
- 1:06:43that it needs to do without doing too much.
- 1:06:48Do you know what else? I think it actually has that
- 1:06:50third thing as well. I think it gives Sacha to one's
- 1:06:56Master. He's big story because this
- 1:06:59whole middle section is handed to him.
- 1:07:02And boy, he just runs with it, doesn't it?
- 1:07:05He's great as the doctor master and Jeff Islands.
- 1:07:11God, he looks so hot in her costume.
- 1:07:13I knew you were gonna say that. Beautiful.
- 1:07:19And he's a bit evil as well. So I'm a straight man and that I
- 1:07:22thought he is pulling that shit off.
- 1:07:25Yeah, we've got the earrings as well as yeah?
- 1:07:27Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:07:30Which one of the things we were talking about when the doctor
- 1:07:32regenerates, it is the Airing going to stay these were what
- 1:07:35these were the questions that people are asking years ago.
- 1:07:40Yes. Yes, it is.
- 1:07:42There you go by all accounts. A shit.
- 1:07:44One is a very quiet sort. Thoughtful sensitive bloke.
- 1:07:50This is not how he behaves at all and yet he gives himself
- 1:07:54over there's a bit in a minute in the Tardis between the doctor
- 1:07:58and yeah, it's where he goes. I am not a doctor and he's right
- 1:08:02in her face and there's always has the touch.
- 1:08:05I thought they were going to kiss or so it was just electric
- 1:08:09and I was like, fuck up me. He is good.
- 1:08:12And so there's man, dips stoic in the face of that, pure rage
- 1:08:16as well. They both have it sitting there
- 1:08:21on that rock pulling out his little whistle and singing doing
- 1:08:24the power of the Daleks to I do. I it's but I saw it and I think
- 1:08:29this is his best showing all I think he's great in all of his
- 1:08:32episodes, but but I think chip Mill fell like that.
- 1:08:36He needed to give his master a good section of this and he
- 1:08:41does. I mean, who better to again, if
- 1:08:44this was supposed to be the last TV story, at least of this run
- 1:08:52who better to have in there as the master you know the doctors
- 1:08:59the doctors arch-nemesis I just think he's like he is
- 1:09:05unpredictable and he is very Sinister but he's massively
- 1:09:10charismatic and sexy as well and it's just all it surrounded
- 1:09:15performers. But to me, I don't really want
- 1:09:18to pull favorites, but he's my favorite new series master.
- 1:09:25It's very different from Gomes, he's very different from see
- 1:09:28him. I love Missy, I love Missy, but
- 1:09:33I like the master to be the master but evil, I don't mean
- 1:09:38that in a masculine feminine way.
- 1:09:41I mean, I don't like mrs. Redemption Arc.
- 1:09:45I told ya, I rather do like that.
- 1:09:52That's it. The Masters too far gone.
- 1:09:57The master is too far gone and has done too much too many times
- 1:10:02for that to of I mean, I know the doctor is endlessly
- 1:10:06forgiving but but the damage that the master is raw since
- 1:10:12their first appearance over the years, I think even the doctor
- 1:10:18at their most benevolent would have difficulty in doing
- 1:10:24anything that but I don't know, I don't know.
- 1:10:29We all see doc to differently. Like I say, I love Missy though.
- 1:10:34I do Missy. And I'm Doctor.
- 1:10:36Who is one of my favorite lines in the show ever?
- 1:10:42Oh, I love the love. This again is weird imagery with
- 1:10:45these bizarre plants sprouting out from the planet Doctor Who
- 1:10:49should always look like dr. Who should be weird almost
- 1:10:54cartoon-esque but and alien it should be alien that that shot
- 1:11:00of him. There standing outside, the
- 1:11:01Tardis is shot in exactly the same way as Missy.
- 1:11:04At the Tardis in the world enough and time.
- 1:11:06Yes. Yeah.
- 1:11:07In fact, it's standing in the doorway in exactly the same way.
- 1:11:10Yes, I'm not as well. But I like this idea of him now
- 1:11:14going round the universe and perverting, the doctor's name
- 1:11:19and turning planets a jar, and it's very kind of Simply but
- 1:11:25vividly depicted with two worlds.
- 1:11:27Clearly firing missiles at each other.
- 1:11:30So, I think that's kind of letting the kids know, in a very
- 1:11:33kind of powerful visual. This is what is going to do if
- 1:11:36he's allowed to get away with this.
- 1:11:38Yeah, I love his choice of costume as well.
- 1:11:43And I just love it when you suddenly get is, it's all noise
- 1:11:46and all pace and this one, you get a quiet moment like this
- 1:11:50where he's playing the Penny Whistle with just the lights
- 1:11:53playing across the surface. How did you know any of this was
- 1:11:57coming with the eloped? Not a clue.
- 1:12:00I was in floods of tears but a suit.
- 1:12:04This shot of what we're looking down and then you see the first
- 1:12:09doctor and I knew that was the first doctor immediately.
- 1:12:14I didn't need, I just thought maybe it would be in just him.
- 1:12:17And then as I started to do my favorite when Colin came out, I
- 1:12:21was screaming weird. A word and this is very.
- 1:12:27I like that. This is a sort of visual
- 1:12:31metaphor for what it is like to regenerate.
- 1:12:35Yes, yeah, this Barren Wasteland, the telegraph poles,
- 1:12:41connecting, all of the wires. It's like the web of time.
- 1:12:46Early McGann always going on about the web of time.
- 1:12:51You know what? This feels like this.
- 1:12:52The doctor inside her own head. Talking to previous versions of
- 1:12:56herself within a metaphor. This feels like the new
- 1:12:58adventures. Yes.
- 1:13:00And it also feels like the 11, you can now understand how the
- 1:13:0511 from Big finish operates. and now this year, Yeah I'll pull my
- 1:13:13God looks resplendent, doesn't it?
- 1:13:15Yeah, ages. Yeah.
- 1:13:18You know what? There's just not enough
- 1:13:19probability Theory so they'll never be enough.
- 1:13:21You know? You love it supposed to be coy
- 1:13:25rolling his eyes. What he says is always one in
- 1:13:28there. I love that she's wearing the
- 1:13:32dark coat as well. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:35Yeah. And he kind of says, doesn't he
- 1:13:38like it's this is this is It's a visual metaphor.
- 1:13:42All that's been conjured up. But actually this isn't what it
- 1:13:44is is just how you're perceiving it to be now.
- 1:13:49So so all those people are going, oh well, you know, I
- 1:13:51didn't envisage it as a Chasm with a telegraph pole.
- 1:13:54Well no, it's just what she's a brain making sense of what's
- 1:13:58Happening. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:14:01I'll call it. I love you so much.
- 1:14:04The fact that Colin Baker is back on Doctor.
- 1:14:07Who that's my world. It says a lot for him as well.
- 1:14:12He was happy to come back. I mean we need we've known for
- 1:14:16years. That he would always come back
- 1:14:17if he was invited, but I think that says a lot for him given
- 1:14:22given his history in the show. It was about Bloody time.
- 1:14:27And this is, this is the first time really the Paul mcgann's
- 1:14:30been in the, the TV show. Since 96, but that's not the TV
- 1:14:38show. That was a one of made-for-tv
- 1:14:40movie in America ever. This is his first time ever in
- 1:14:44the show. This is really other than other
- 1:14:47than pictures. This is the first time Paul
- 1:14:50mcgann's actually been in proper Doctor Who now I love the TV
- 1:14:55movie. So, it took me a long time to
- 1:14:59learn to love the TV movie because when I was 18 and it
- 1:15:04came out I did not love the TV movie.
- 1:15:09But I was I wasn't in the right place to be receptive to the TV
- 1:15:14movie at the time. Me you know that empty chair
- 1:15:18around the companion. Anonymous scene with the laptop
- 1:15:20on it. That's dr.
- 1:15:21Grace Holloway beaming in there. Hello, everybody is about the
- 1:15:26doctor. If, if Jackie lame was still
- 1:15:32with us, it would have been a zoom meeting with dodo poly
- 1:15:36great. Yeah, it could be, that's the
- 1:15:38point of that chair. Isn't it?
- 1:15:39If I can? Yeah, whoever you want it to be
- 1:15:42and it does as well. Yeah, it says it's a laptop
- 1:15:47looking into this meeting looking into the world of Doctor
- 1:15:52Who and the Doctor Who companions, which is what we've
- 1:15:55done from day one. Well, sairam the circle with a
- 1:15:59lot of talk through actors are that in the Convention as well.
- 1:16:01You know, going back to the doctors quickly, right.
- 1:16:05I do think they all equip themselves brilliantly in this
- 1:16:08yet, but I'm going to say science is going to stun you and
- 1:16:10listeners rigid. Because I'm I'm very often quite
- 1:16:15critical Sylvester McCoy and he's acting.
- 1:16:18I thought, hey was he gave the best performance out of all of
- 1:16:21them and that the sequence where he gets told to Ace and talks
- 1:16:25about letting your children. I and it's lean into that sort
- 1:16:30of brooding presence McCoy that you getting dosed by stories
- 1:16:34like that. And I was just like, fuck me.
- 1:16:36I wish I could have had a few more seasons of him like this.
- 1:16:42I haven't, I haven't on-off relationship with Sylvester
- 1:16:45McCoy is dr. Not because it's so I love
- 1:16:48silver two pieces, I think he's great but because of the way
- 1:16:53Colin Baker was treated and that put me on the wrong foot with
- 1:16:57the Seventh Doctor that I never quite managed heard that before
- 1:17:01sync up with him. Are you sure it was a terrible
- 1:17:07now? I think he's wonderful.
- 1:17:09Oh yes yeah, great. Yeah, he's a bit of a It.
- 1:17:14And he's also the one that I'm absolutely 100% convinced has at
- 1:17:18least some recollection of the time this child.
- 1:17:21He is that he is the one doctor that I think in some level new
- 1:17:27and that's why he goes around doing all this unfinished
- 1:17:29business, why he's the one doctor that remembered all that
- 1:17:33stuff back in remembrance wasn't it about Omega and the Hand of
- 1:17:36Omega and yeah, exactly example. This bit here right where where
- 1:17:41it gets taken this long speech about husbands and our seen off
- 1:17:46this and that building for the Cybermen that's easy.
- 1:17:49What's the plan? But the line where she says, I
- 1:17:51was an air hostess to be a tease.
- 1:17:58No, it's like a row. I figure that is, it's a bit of
- 1:18:00a dodgy speech, but that line is bang on.
- 1:18:06I love it because Teigen The time Chris chibnall was growing,
- 1:18:13though would have been a very dominant and strong force within
- 1:18:19Doctor Who for the first time really seeing the female
- 1:18:22companion. Being that feisty, that that
- 1:18:28critical of the doctor, it was quite unusual.
- 1:18:33She always made me feel like I was being told off by an older
- 1:18:36sister but, you know, I don't have an older sister but Tegan
- 1:18:41was as if he's got it. Filled recessions.
- 1:18:43Lucy from Peters. Yes.
- 1:18:45Yeah. And you know, we haven't really
- 1:18:50talked enough about the two of them in this, but I just think
- 1:18:53he uses them both but like ice is jumping off a building with a
- 1:18:58baseball bat in a rucksack, you know, being shot at by a
- 1:19:01Cyberman Tegan is a stroppy mayor who's got to let everybody
- 1:19:05live. She's pissed off but she's still
- 1:19:07going to do our best. I mean, he characterizes them
- 1:19:09both. Excellently.
- 1:19:12As a child of the, a is, it's such a deep, well, of nostalgic,
- 1:19:18for me, it's two very impactful companions who had presence and
- 1:19:29force and make themselves noticed, you know, and made
- 1:19:35themselves loved as well. I think is the important thing.
- 1:19:39I The connect a little more with Tegan and I did Ace because I
- 1:19:43was a bit younger and so she was more impactful on me and because
- 1:19:49I was still on the wrong foot with McCrory.
- 1:19:53Even by that, by the time Ace came along, I was still a bit.
- 1:19:56Hmm. Luckily, I've been able to go
- 1:19:59back and re-watch all the McCrory, many many, many times.
- 1:20:02And it now I just get nostalgic for being a kid again, and I was
- 1:20:07watching this I initially fall. That Sophie aldred ice was
- 1:20:15getting all the best material. I was like, you know, because
- 1:20:17she's, she beats up the diet with a baseball bat.
- 1:20:20You know, she's flirting with Graham and all of this.
- 1:20:23And I think she gets sort of the more thoughtful moments and
- 1:20:26initially, I was like, oh, Janet field has not acted for a while
- 1:20:29as she, you know, like she's but, I don't know this just
- 1:20:33there is just something about Janet fielding's attitude that
- 1:20:36transcends from the 80s today. I'll say it again.
- 1:20:43And yes, I would like to go into the Tardis is one of my
- 1:20:46favorite. That's why she is really good at
- 1:20:52this and it's just so nice to see her back because Yeah, she
- 1:20:59was. She was companion for a long
- 1:21:02time. When I was watching as a kid and
- 1:21:05her departure was kind of like I never thought she'd go.
- 1:21:10She was she was the eighties kids, Sarah Jane to a point
- 1:21:14because she was there for so long and she's she kind of span
- 1:21:18to doctors not quite as much as Sarah did.
- 1:21:23But, you know, it's this is the bit with her and Paste Dives and
- 1:21:29and I think the AI interface thing was such a brilliant idea.
- 1:21:35It gave us a chance to have these.
- 1:21:37This is properly kissing in the past and she gets to say as
- 1:21:42well, I missed you and he says I missed you too.
- 1:21:45So all that Bluster, Falls away. And that's how they really feel
- 1:21:49about each other. They call stand each other with
- 1:21:54the doctor for, as long as she did, if she didn't love him, and
- 1:21:58He wouldn't have put up with her for as long as he did if he
- 1:22:01didn't love her, it's but it's not.
- 1:22:04It's not romance love. It's deeper than that.
- 1:22:08It's the love that you have for your own flesh and blood.
- 1:22:12Yeah. Yeah, I really I think I think I
- 1:22:16felt it here more than I did back in the 80s but I think what
- 1:22:21I can feel is that the Friendship that's developed
- 1:22:24between Peter Davison and Janet Fielding.
- 1:22:25Yeah, then they worked together for years but they've done all
- 1:22:29these big finish's together. Now call that Rapport that
- 1:22:31they've built up, it's astonishing you listen to those
- 1:22:34commentaries they do together and the chemistry between the
- 1:22:38two of them. So they're saying, you know,
- 1:22:40that they're in that scene, it's more about the actors.
- 1:22:43Yes, of course. Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:22:46We're gonna pray that as well. Celebrate because because it's
- 1:22:51all true. Doctor Who fans have to know
- 1:22:57everything about everyone on screen off screen?
- 1:23:03You know? We know how these people are
- 1:23:06together in real life, even Jody and mounded, we know that
- 1:23:10they're best buds. They've that they've built this
- 1:23:13Rapport between them. I'm glad that a sense to, to the
- 1:23:20doctor there. I was all right for me to blow
- 1:23:22up stuff when you want me to, but you tell me, I'll find.
- 1:23:24Lies. I've always felt that.
- 1:23:26No one's ever said it. I've always felt where these two
- 1:23:29really do just slip back into it, don't they?
- 1:23:32I mean they have pretty much been playing opposite each other
- 1:23:36since they went off, are the big finish ones behind?
- 1:23:39They've been doing big finish now.
- 1:23:40For 20 odd years, you know, So this is our, you know,
- 1:23:46well-honed relationship but I was just astonished by McCoy's
- 1:23:52sore gravitas here. I felt like the centuries
- 1:23:56Weighing on him as he's talking about laying his companions fly.
- 1:24:06I mean it wasn't the start of his career but it was the start
- 1:24:10of his straight acting career was the doctor and he is still
- 1:24:16very clearly. An actor that is finding his
- 1:24:20feet at times in his optional run.
- 1:24:25Yeah, of course. I agree with that entirely.
- 1:24:27Where is now he's much more established.
- 1:24:29She's dumb blockbuster movies for Pete Jackson for Christ's
- 1:24:33sake. It's you know he's He's you give
- 1:24:36him a say now and he knows how to play it.
- 1:24:39Yeah. But but but you know what was
- 1:24:40exciting about him back in the 80s.
- 1:24:42I didn't really recognize it as time because there are moments
- 1:24:45where I feel weird, goes over a cliff and the acting gray, but
- 1:24:48his kind of now, I think it's kind of dangerous acting because
- 1:24:52when it lands, it's amazing. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:24:55We know what you're gonna get with McCoy, he's very
- 1:24:58unpredictable in his responses and the way he emotes those
- 1:25:04responses, We all have a universe of our own terrorists
- 1:25:07to face when it lands, it lands. Yeah.
- 1:25:13Unfortunately when it doesn't land, it's a beginning, probably
- 1:25:17getting so far, so, lonely gourd and evil, you know, Zone to God.
- 1:25:23I was convinced. Kate Stewart was going to be
- 1:25:24sacrificed in this you know? Yes.
- 1:25:27Yeah. Which to be fair.
- 1:25:32She does a cracking job of looking absolutely petrified.
- 1:25:36I like this bit. That's the most emotion.
- 1:25:39I've ever seen her play the role with?
- 1:25:41Yeah. And a bit where she's in the
- 1:25:43chair and she's screaming her head off.
- 1:25:46I was like, wow, this is the best material case you as has
- 1:25:50she We had fun doing this didn't show, I think they all did
- 1:25:55because they all saw as the celebration of the is they all
- 1:25:58saw as. A last hurrah in some ways and
- 1:26:06we might have been because it may very well, what not only
- 1:26:09might have been, but none of none of them are getting any
- 1:26:13younger. And certainly not what the
- 1:26:14doctors are concerned. This probably is the last time
- 1:26:20we will ever see them on the screen being the doctor.
- 1:26:24Yeah, there's a good good chance and that's heartbreaking to say
- 1:26:30and it's really sad that Tom something available, especially
- 1:26:35as he's Definitely Beginning to Look his age.
- 1:26:40Yeah even the ever has done before.
- 1:26:44Do you laugh though? The fact they barely
- 1:26:45acknowledged the fact that they're really old.
- 1:26:47Like there's like a there's a line that Tegan says nothing and
- 1:26:50he goes well, you can talk and that's enough, you know, but but
- 1:26:53then look at Patrick troughton in the two doctors especially
- 1:26:59where to be fair. He's very, he doesn't do a lot
- 1:27:04of moving around in that story, he is on the bed, he's The
- 1:27:07wheelchair. It's only really in the last
- 1:27:10episode, where he's going off to eat, he's like, you've got like,
- 1:27:15you know, you've got the line of.
- 1:27:17I always an interpretation of those doctors has been conjured
- 1:27:20up there, so that's why they're not quite right, but more
- 1:27:23importantly who gives a shit? Colin Baker, Paul McGann, Peter
- 1:27:27Davison and Sylvester McCoy are back in Doctor Who, you know,
- 1:27:32that's the point that was the point.
- 1:27:34And that was why people were so vexed with With Day of the
- 1:27:38Doctor. Now we his that bit that we
- 1:27:42don't really get an explanation for that.
- 1:27:45I have a headcanon for was or Tegan falling down that shaft
- 1:27:50and then just walking out with a bit of a sprained wrist at the
- 1:27:52end and I did she survive. Yeah, I was wondering that well,
- 1:27:59Have you read the novelization of resurrection of the Daleks by
- 1:28:06Eric's a word? No, go on.
- 1:28:09So you haven't read the, the epilogue at the end of that.
- 1:28:14Is she a Super Woman or something?
- 1:28:16Oh God, it's now. I'll admit when I first read
- 1:28:26that I was like oh what is this or what?
- 1:28:33Oh my God, it's tell you. What if we ever meet up?
- 1:28:36You can have my copy because I do, I hear, it's pretty
- 1:28:41terrible. It Revelation is better, but
- 1:28:48yeah. So Tegan Tegan somehow
- 1:28:50discovers, she has super powers to a degree.
- 1:28:56She can at least leap tall buildings in a single bound.
- 1:29:02So bizarre, but now he kind of makes sense.
- 1:29:05That's how she survives the fall down.
- 1:29:08Well, I'm glad it happened for a reason.
- 1:29:10It wasn't just a bizarre Quirk from the diseased mind of Eric's
- 1:29:13award and we can come back here. Yeah, we wouldn't.
- 1:29:17I think we had to have the rooftops but yes.
- 1:29:24Very cold, but I saw it meant shooting themselves through her.
- 1:29:27I love his absolute Panic that he doesn't recognize this dr.
- 1:29:31At all. This is a doctor that he has no
- 1:29:34knowledge of which means either one of two things he's failed,
- 1:29:39or he doesn't know everything. Yeah, we're he's got this
- 1:29:44perfectly structured plan and then there's this unpredictable
- 1:29:48element is like, what the hell, you know.
- 1:29:51And then there's vindico Going out as well.
- 1:29:53People, people questioned vendors point, my wife did
- 1:29:58vendors point in this story and that just there is vendors
- 1:30:03point. He's the only one out of all of
- 1:30:05the people that know, the doctor that it was isn't as attached to
- 1:30:11the point that he can actually pull the trigger.
- 1:30:17This is enough about the use of Solomon as well.
- 1:30:19The the Cyber Lords as like. Okay.
- 1:30:21We've got to do this now, they're coming.
- 1:30:24Yeah, you know, said it said is, so it's urgent.
- 1:30:27Oscar and of my are say that both Sacha Dhawan and Jodi
- 1:30:30whisker. Look, absolutely marvelous in
- 1:30:33the rest of McCoy's question, mark jumper, that of all the
- 1:30:37cases for the past. That was probably my favorite.
- 1:30:40Yes. Yeah, they really both to pull
- 1:30:43that off time though. When it's nice, he's looking
- 1:30:46jumper. I love the question marks I'm
- 1:30:501/8 is kid. I was, I was meant to live the
- 1:30:53question marks, you know? It could only have been made
- 1:30:58better had Colin Baker's coat being over-the-top, but no, they
- 1:31:04wouldn't go that far. I don't think Todd loves Collins
- 1:31:07coat. I have grown to love God in sky
- 1:31:13without it now. She's back.
- 1:31:18So she has been out of sort of our story apart from those dream
- 1:31:21sequences for about 20 minutes yes but presents hasn't and
- 1:31:27that's that's very telling I think I I think it's supposed to
- 1:31:31be a bit like Christmas Invasion because everything goes to shit
- 1:31:35in the masks like right get the volcano's going you know do this
- 1:31:39and she suddenly got like five things.
- 1:31:40She's got to sort out and she's very in the Tardis game.
- 1:31:43Must be a way of doing all of this in one go.
- 1:31:46I think she has his big smile enough.
- 1:31:47I seems a lot, right? It's all gonna do.
- 1:31:51And it just shows you out. You know, she is she's a
- 1:31:54heroine. Yeah sure it is I Jesus Christ
- 1:31:58Jeff, she manages to turn entire exploding volcanoes into Steel.
- 1:32:05So clever. So we technically that could
- 1:32:07also be the power of the doctor I suppose.
- 1:32:09Yeah. Turning molten lava into steel.
- 1:32:13She goes, we've got a lot to do. Come on.
- 1:32:18Yeah. Okay, Kate Stewart now.
- 1:32:22And that was I mean my good friend, Lucy McColl, has done,
- 1:32:25she realized case to her and she says inner voice note that I
- 1:32:29listened to her earlier that she really welled up at the Fort of
- 1:32:32K, offering her life, you know, for the people under her
- 1:32:38command, it is a really nice because it's exactly what the
- 1:32:41Brigadier would do. Yes there's yeah.
- 1:32:45She is her father's daughter. As she doesn't, maybe have the
- 1:32:50same Charisma as her Other. But she has the same heart and
- 1:32:55that's all that really matters. Yeah, I log was the fact that
- 1:33:00then she gets a triple whammy of great moment.
- 1:33:04She gets the bit where the doctor goes.
- 1:33:07Do you want to come inside? And she's just like, yeah, hey.
- 1:33:10And then she gets the Lima, see whatever all that she goes.
- 1:33:13How is it bigger on the inside than the out?
- 1:33:15And then she gets that wonderful line at the end where she goes,
- 1:33:18you know what, I might want to do a bit of recruiting went
- 1:33:21over. This is a And I'm like she
- 1:33:24always written like this but I used to write her in like big
- 1:33:30speeches going. I'm Kate Stewart.
- 1:33:31My father was Brigadier lethbridge-stewart.
- 1:33:33I'm defending the Earth and not just I don't know anyone who
- 1:33:36talks like that. You know whereas here she's been
- 1:33:40written with a bitch arm and a bit of humor.
- 1:33:43Yes. Yeah.
- 1:33:45Personality mostly just before she's about to see Ace and
- 1:33:50Teagan. She goes look I brought some
- 1:33:52Alright, don't start. Okay, no, I think this is Kate's
- 1:33:58finest hour. In fact, there's not a Duff
- 1:34:02piece of this jigsaw puzzle in this story that everything fits
- 1:34:08exactly how it was supposed to do at its absolute Pinnacle as
- 1:34:12well. I've got, I've got a question
- 1:34:14for you though because I certainly think this is duan's
- 1:34:17finest Hour. Definitely Kate Stewart.
- 1:34:20Definitely Yaz has as well. I think, yeah.
- 1:34:22Yes, when she does that, case of Andrews, only thing of carrying
- 1:34:25the doctor back to the Tardis in slow motion.
- 1:34:28I just thought Mac best is this Jodie Whittaker's finest hour.
- 1:34:37That's a big, a big question. She has been actually one of the
- 1:34:42most consistent doctors in its kind of fully formed and yeah.
- 1:34:49From from day one, pretty much, yeah, she she knew her doctor
- 1:34:58which is important for the act of coming into it.
- 1:35:00You need to know who your doctor is, who they going to be a, how
- 1:35:04they're going to react when you Even situation is it her finest
- 1:35:10hour? I think every generation seeing
- 1:35:13this. Or I think the last five
- 1:35:16minutes. Yeah yeah.
- 1:35:17Fine. Our and I wouldn't say that
- 1:35:19about any of the other doctors, you know I don't think there is
- 1:35:23maybe Eccleston and he's the only other doctor that goes out
- 1:35:26on a smile. You know yes embracing the
- 1:35:29future you got tenant who's Railing at the universe and is a
- 1:35:33terrible Grump. You got, Matt Smith, what
- 1:35:35happens with do is kind of go, he's got so I've got the weight
- 1:35:38of the age he he he's a bit I don't want to say wishy-washy.
- 1:35:45About his regeneration because it is a lovely, lovely, but is
- 1:35:49it is all have different sentimental, it's and Capaldi's
- 1:35:54going on about avocado pears in the longest speech known to
- 1:35:56mankind. Mark said to me this was his
- 1:36:02favorite regeneration of the new series just because it was so
- 1:36:05beautiful. And so uplifting oh go on
- 1:36:09further. This is now my favorite
- 1:36:11regeneration. I said I think it's certainly
- 1:36:14one of the best It's up to now, it might have been Davison's, I
- 1:36:21think it is because that was an impactful, one for me as a kid.
- 1:36:26I feel like it's mr. McCoy and a Harpo, Marx week is
- 1:36:29pretty impressive. When hunger Baker tournaments.
- 1:36:32As you see, they just they just doomed it for me from the get-go
- 1:36:37because even as even as a kid, I knew that Colin wasn't there.
- 1:36:45You know, we saw at the size of him.
- 1:36:47That's all exactly. Yeah.
- 1:36:51Maybe maybe all that carrot juice, an exercise bike in good
- 1:36:54paid off. But, you know, I would probably
- 1:36:58go as far as to say, I think Jenni was his best performers is
- 1:37:01in the vanquishers where she gets to play three versions.
- 1:37:06Yes. Yeah, she's still Jodi
- 1:37:10performance. Yes, but I think she's got some
- 1:37:13of her best. Visual scenes in this story.
- 1:37:19She has so many perfect doctor moments for me, which is why,
- 1:37:28you know, I'll bet I've been thinking about this.
- 1:37:32I don't like picking a favorite doctor, because so many of them
- 1:37:37means so much to me for so many different reasons.
- 1:37:41But if I wanted to pick the one and this is a conversation, me
- 1:37:46and my dad had years ago, and he said, his favorite doctor was
- 1:37:49Peter Davison because he was the one that he felt embodied, the
- 1:37:54spirit, and the heart, and the character of the doctor, in the
- 1:37:58most purest form. For me, that's charity worker.
- 1:38:03Is she is probably now my quintessential doctor.
- 1:38:11I think I kind of agree with you but I feel like she showed new
- 1:38:17sighs the doctor that I'd never seen before.
- 1:38:20Yeah. And that's what I love about her
- 1:38:22and that definitely it was that and you know the energy is going
- 1:38:26to say. It's the woke of a nature like
- 1:38:28the embracing everybody celebrating life at the This
- 1:38:34story. I love the fact that her final
- 1:38:37Act is one of kindness of letting the quarians go.
- 1:38:41And I've never seen anything like you out there and I want to
- 1:38:45see more of the universe because of things like you and it leans
- 1:38:48into that moment in it takes you away when she kisses the frog
- 1:38:52and the says, yes, yes. And I've never seen anything and
- 1:38:55that's what her doctors all about, sort of embracing all of
- 1:38:59it. But that's the very essence of
- 1:39:01the doctor that that's why the doctor is out.
- 1:39:03They're doing this because they want to see it all and there's
- 1:39:06always new things to surprise them and to Spur them on to do
- 1:39:10more and to right those wrongs. So she says in a very first
- 1:39:15episode, I'll just add, this is something very what's the right
- 1:39:23word? There is something very I want
- 1:39:26to honestly likeable because that's not a strong enough word,
- 1:39:29something effervescent. And, you know, Sparkling about
- 1:39:34Jodie Whittaker that if you channel, that kind of Outlook
- 1:39:39through that sort of actress. Yes.
- 1:39:42Yeah, that's the result. It's just like, it's like a
- 1:39:44glass of lemonade on a sunny day.
- 1:39:47You know what I mean? Yeah, absolutely.
- 1:39:49I'll do. Okay.
- 1:39:51So, We've establishes many people's finest Hour.
- 1:39:58Hmm, is it Chris chibnall is finest Hour.
- 1:40:02Do you know what I think it is? And yeah, I feel like he put in
- 1:40:08150% into this script. I feel like it probably went
- 1:40:12through the wringer and it was Rewritten, a lot until he was
- 1:40:15perfectly happy with it. It's got all of the elements of
- 1:40:19what he does. It's got an enormous cast.
- 1:40:21It's got that 15 plots run in. It's got a ton of exposition and
- 1:40:27so what you were worried done? Putting a lot of exposition.
- 1:40:33But it's like, it's like Refined Chris chibnall this?
- 1:40:37Yes, yeah, it's pure Christian panel but as well as like he
- 1:40:43knows he's got the budget to play with.
- 1:40:45So his set pieces are more impressive than ever.
- 1:40:48He knows it's everybody's last this and that so he's Gotta Give
- 1:40:52them moments too shy. He knows he's celebrating the
- 1:40:55past. So he's got to honor that and
- 1:40:57give those characters moments that, you know, on the style
- 1:41:00giuk. He feels it full of Big Ideas.
- 1:41:05The the designers could do that best work.
- 1:41:09Yes I think this is probably critical best script.
- 1:41:12What do you think? Yeah. 100% 100% is don't like
- 1:41:20it. Jodi's, just got battered.
- 1:41:24I don't like it. Oh, it's horrible, isn't it?
- 1:41:27And she really flies into the air.
- 1:41:29Yeah. But I was really getting strong
- 1:41:33case about design device here. Yes, yeah, yeah.
- 1:41:36It's the companion. Carrying the doctor.
- 1:41:39It's amazing, but with the whole world falling apart around them.
- 1:41:44It is like you said, visually this is something else, this is
- 1:41:49next level, but yeah, I think, I think Chris chibnall.
- 1:41:56Much like Steven Moffat did with season 10.
- 1:42:00He went out on the high for me. I think if Christian if Moffat
- 1:42:05had gone out on world another time and the doctor falls and I
- 1:42:08would have been perfect. She's been stripped.
- 1:42:10Yeah, I think it's his best script of his era.
- 1:42:13Unfortunately, you went out on twice upon a time and never mind
- 1:42:18but this, this is and I've Loved all of Chris's stories, I Have
- 1:42:26the same complaints that it seems like a lot of people do I
- 1:42:30click with his Ryan because I feel he sees Doctor Who in a
- 1:42:36very similar way to how I see Doctor Who.
- 1:42:41And there are parallels, I can draw with my own opinions.
- 1:42:44A doctor with what? He's done with dr.
- 1:42:46Hey, so I've loved everything. There isn't a story that I
- 1:42:53wouldn't just Khalifa Lee, stick on and watch, and enjoy and just
- 1:43:00get some so much pleasure out of.
- 1:43:04But this is this is the the absolute Pinnacle of his Doctor
- 1:43:08Who and I think this is like next-level stuff.
- 1:43:11Yeah he's like he this had a heat or expectation.
- 1:43:17I had I haven't really heard too much Chris.
- 1:43:21I've had some but compared to what he normally gets this has
- 1:43:25been extremely well received and by their critics as well and in
- 1:43:29the newspapers and things like that this has been really well
- 1:43:32received and I've heard some people you know podcast things
- 1:43:35are not going my God you know where was this in the rest of
- 1:43:38his era you know this was amazing.
- 1:43:41So I do I do think this is sort of but it was always there and
- 1:43:44that's the thing I've always been able to see what Stone
- 1:43:47here, throughout his era. Jeff.
- 1:43:52Oh, my word. This is that scene, where man?
- 1:43:55Dips crying her eyes out. And a lot this could have been
- 1:43:59agonizing and it's so sad. Where would you choose and which
- 1:44:06flavor ice cream? It's beautiful.
- 1:44:12She's barely holding it together, man.
- 1:44:14Do yeah. Yeah.
- 1:44:20That that shot of her touching the doctors arm.
- 1:44:25Yeah, it's really nice. I hate Peter Capaldi's sitting
- 1:44:31on top of the TARDIS roof in. Listen, I hate it, because it's
- 1:44:35done. In a very disingenuous way for
- 1:44:39me and he produced a fourth wall which I don't mind, fourth wall
- 1:44:46breaks Deadpool, I love. But in Doctor Who this is
- 1:44:54perfect. So I may be a hypocrite.
- 1:44:57But I think I think the Rory's dad Brian, sitting, yes, just
- 1:45:05sitting dangling. His I love that.
- 1:45:07Yeah, but yeah. But you know what?
- 1:45:11I'm now. The bangs and whistles are done.
- 1:45:13Yeah. And we've had all the kisses to
- 1:45:14the pass and we've had all the fun and excitement and drama,
- 1:45:17and explosions, and all of that. And actually, this is what this
- 1:45:22is about. It's their relationship, what
- 1:45:24they mean to each other, kind of what they can't have, which is
- 1:45:28very sad, but an acknowledgement of how much they love each other
- 1:45:33Mandatory Action or yaz's reaction.
- 1:45:36In mice, hearts are so full of love for all of you.
- 1:45:40And that's where she realizes that as much as she loves the
- 1:45:45doctor. The doctor does love her in the
- 1:45:47same way, but she also loves so many other people and she's had
- 1:45:51so many other lives and so many other Adventures for years.
- 1:45:58There will only ever be one doctor for the doctor there's a
- 1:46:02thousand years has Not to diminish, as, as a person,
- 1:46:08that's that elevates her into a very elite crowd of people.
- 1:46:14I think the complexity of Manda kills performance in those two
- 1:46:18things, there's a bit right, where she's crying.
- 1:46:22And then she goes, Like she breathes out like that.
- 1:46:27When I'm overcome with emotion. That's exactly how I like.
- 1:46:31Is I sort of level of realistic emotion?
- 1:46:34Yeah, don't really see him. I think it was real emotion
- 1:46:38though and I think I think when Jody is getting choked up, I
- 1:46:42think that's very real emotion. You don't, we needed officer
- 1:46:48that, you know, sort of heartbreak of those two scenes
- 1:46:52is Bradley Walsh and John, Bishop coming, along fighting
- 1:46:56over a map. And and this, what I loved about
- 1:47:00this was it really shows that people did build an impressive
- 1:47:05cast of characters in his tongue and these three together.
- 1:47:09I was like I want to see where they're going next.
- 1:47:11These free. You know what?
- 1:47:13I also love there is The Tardis which she has has been piloting
- 1:47:19and and in control of them, most of the story takes you as to
- 1:47:25where she needs to be. Yeah.
- 1:47:29I'm taking the doctor. I'm not sure I can handle this
- 1:47:32thing with all the onions together.
- 1:47:34You know, what, what chip me off first is I could hear Katie
- 1:47:37Manning's laughs. It's yeah, because she's got a
- 1:47:41really deep laugh. And yeah, but can I just say the
- 1:47:47just the sheer Joy of William Russell being in this say now
- 1:47:52are you night? And I know he's not going to be
- 1:47:54with us too much longer and the fact that he managed to make it
- 1:47:57into This episode all these years later, it's delightful.
- 1:48:04Look at me and Bonnie Langford. Oh, Bonnie how wonderful.
- 1:48:12And so yeah. So you know who is this while
- 1:48:14the doctors going off to regenerate as well that you're
- 1:48:19right. You'll hug.
- 1:48:21Yes, a hug, you're the fag. Did you say?
- 1:48:30But what I love is well is that yes he's really upset and they
- 1:48:33say to you, as you know, you're right and that she's been left
- 1:48:37in the hands of people that are going to support her and Helper
- 1:48:40and that's a wonderful ending for a companion.
- 1:48:44And I've heard this idea Moody before about companions coming
- 1:48:47together and sharing stories. I never thought, I'd say I'm
- 1:48:50screwed. It's it's almost fanfiction ask
- 1:48:56and you can call it fan service or from wank or whatever you
- 1:49:01want to call that base. Bloody beautiful.
- 1:49:08Makes me feel, is very real. How can you not feel something,
- 1:49:12watch it. If you're a fan of this show,
- 1:49:14you'll seeing characters from the 60s, the 70s, the 80s and
- 1:49:19knew who all together. Yeah, it's lovely.
- 1:49:22I would have quite liked to have seen a couple of carrots just
- 1:49:24from Rusty Davis and moffatt's time as well.
- 1:49:28I think it's been said that they would deliberately not included.
- 1:49:36Because of what's coming up in the 60th.
- 1:49:38I think that's going to be more of a modern era celebration,
- 1:49:42that's fair enough. My word, here we go.
- 1:49:46And I can't think of a more perfect last line.
- 1:49:48That dr. Whoever you're about to be
- 1:49:50tagged, you will love the prism in the Regeneration effect as
- 1:49:54well. I wanted her to have a rainbow
- 1:49:57regeneration effect and they've almost done it and I love it and
- 1:50:02that they're that electricity sort of powering out of her on
- 1:50:06the cliff top, it would have been a great place to leave the
- 1:50:08show. I would have been scared.
- 1:50:10Like you couldn't it, you cut it there, and that's it.
- 1:50:14You And you know what? I'm going to tell you something
- 1:50:17now, Rusty Davis is my favorite producer of Doctor.
- 1:50:20Who, and David Tennant is probably my favorite doctor and
- 1:50:25this was the one point of the episode where I didn't actually
- 1:50:27feel much. I was going well.
- 1:50:29I've been here before. Yeah, it's retreading old
- 1:50:34ground. Don't get me wrong.
- 1:50:37I do me and me and me, and Nick, he did absolutely wet ourselves.
- 1:50:42I know these teeth. Yeah, and I and you know what, I
- 1:50:47feel like he looks better than ever and it's Rusty Davies,
- 1:50:51whatever's coming is going to be pretty spectacular.
- 1:50:54Yes and deliberate but again it's an anniversary celebration
- 1:51:00and I get I get white. They've bought David Tennant
- 1:51:08back and If like you say this was very possibly going to be
- 1:51:16Doctor Who's last gasp, then it makes sense that to ensure it
- 1:51:23goes on a little bit longer. Yeah, David Shannon makes sense.
- 1:51:29He's this generation's Tom Baker if if survival had been given
- 1:51:38I'm wasn't the last the last chance of classic.
- 1:51:43Oh, and if Tom Baker had turned up at the end of that, if
- 1:51:46silvered regenerated into a slightly older, Tom Baker,
- 1:51:50people would have gone gampy for it.
- 1:51:53They, the go nuts. So, yeah, I get what they're
- 1:51:58doing, and I don't see it as cynical and I don't see it.
- 1:52:02I've had it is, is is making sure Doctor Who is still there
- 1:52:07for Rizal. Yes.
- 1:52:09Yeah. And I don't think it's any kind
- 1:52:11of criticism on what's been. As you know, what has just been
- 1:52:15as well? I'm going to throw a figure at
- 1:52:17you right now. Okay.
- 1:52:19That should any of the entities. We listening to this last year.
- 1:52:23Doctor Who raked in 1.8 billion for the BBC.
- 1:52:30Yeah, I can believe it. Okay.
- 1:52:32And I unsuccessful arm of the of, this friend.
- 1:52:36Blythe would not be printing that.
- 1:52:38Amount of money at the end of Jodie, Whittaker, Sera that it's
- 1:52:41still bringing in that amount of money is, well, I was
- 1:52:48astonishing as well as the speculation around this ago.
- 1:52:51I can't think of an episode where I her at saw so many
- 1:52:54podcasts about, you know, what's going to happen in parallel?
- 1:52:56The doctor, how is she going to go out what's going to happen to
- 1:52:59ya that it's still in the Zeitgeist?
- 1:53:02It might be in the in these sort of big event episodes. but it's
- 1:53:06still, there is has Doctor Who now reach the point I'm at and I
- 1:53:16think I think he did quite a while ago, reach the point of
- 1:53:22When you think of this country, you think of certain things you
- 1:53:27think of big band you think of red telephone boxes, you think
- 1:53:32of the double-decker buses in London?
- 1:53:34You think of the Beatles you think of Doctor Who Yeah.
- 1:53:42You know is it our biggest export I off?
- 1:53:46I think for sure yes in terms of in terms of like culture, pop
- 1:53:53culture and television for sure. Yes.
- 1:53:57I mean they at it, Strictly Come Dancing on this week and the
- 1:54:01fellow came to dancing out the Tardis to adoption fee.
- 1:54:05Yeah, no, as well. Stacey Dooley.
- 1:54:13Hot dogs dressed as JD Whitaker theme tune was played during the
- 1:54:17opening ceremony of the Olympics.
- 1:54:19Yes yeah and Delia Derbyshire herself who realized that
- 1:54:25original version of the theme. Tune is a Pioneer in electronic
- 1:54:30music the that everyone laughs their hat.
- 1:54:34Oh and she was growing up. Just down the road from me
- 1:54:38literally. 15 minute walk from my house Maisie To the blue
- 1:54:43plaque unveiling for you know it was and there weren't many
- 1:54:47doctor, he people there it was people, it was people into music
- 1:54:52who were there for it which is amazing, you know credible.
- 1:54:58Well, Jeff you and I now have the task ahead of us of.
- 1:55:03I don't know if this format was in last time you did this, you
- 1:55:06know? But it is in town where we have
- 1:55:09to detail three reasons of peace.
- 1:55:13So you start, I'll do one and it back to you then back to me
- 1:55:16again. Okay, of as to why we would
- 1:55:18recommend the power of the doctor to anybody who might be
- 1:55:22listening to us right now. I feel like we've just done that
- 1:55:25pretty well for the last two hours, I think.
- 1:55:27But kind of, here's the summation of our thoughts.
- 1:55:32I'm gonna pick the obvious one first, which is going to
- 1:55:35irritate you, because I'll probably picked option one for
- 1:55:38you as well is if you want to understand what doc Who is this
- 1:55:44episode is Doctor Who in Crystal clarity?
- 1:55:52Okay, well then my first is going to be Sacha to Juan's
- 1:55:58incredible performers. Keep my second.
- 1:56:03One of my favorite Master performance is like a just a
- 1:56:07lovely, lovely blow. But like, effortlessly talented.
- 1:56:12He's asked to do a lot in this. He's asked him to play Sinister,
- 1:56:16to play Camp to play Crazy and he's given wonderful dialogue.
- 1:56:21And he's just a every time he was on the screen I wasn't
- 1:56:25looking at anyone else. I was on the one hand, he's
- 1:56:28beautiful as well back to you. Okay?
- 1:56:34If you want to understand what the relationship is between a
- 1:56:38doctor and the companion, And that's how it indoors you will
- 1:56:44find no better example than Jodie.
- 1:56:48Whittaker Amanda up girl, as the doctor in years sitting on the
- 1:56:51roof of the TARDIS having that conversation gorgeous as they.
- 1:56:56And I thought, you know what is as much about those two
- 1:56:59actresses as it is about their characters this?
- 1:57:01Yes, yes. Yes.
- 1:57:02As much as I sense a lot of honesty in the the that gives it
- 1:57:09even more depth than heart. Okay, then I am going to say the
- 1:57:15incredible amount of Easter eggs that are in this story are still
- 1:57:21don't think I've Unearthed them all.
- 1:57:22And someone out there is going to write a bloody book of how,
- 1:57:25how many references to the pastor is in the power of the
- 1:57:27doctor, but every single one, it's I feel it's Justified
- 1:57:33because of the nature of this episode, but like you just gives
- 1:57:39you that nostalgic love Like my it reinforces how much you love
- 1:57:44this show? Yes.
- 1:57:46During all those moments, you know.
- 1:57:48Okay. One more then.
- 1:57:50All right. I wouldn't be me if I didn't say
- 1:57:56it looks absolutely. If you want to see Doctor Who
- 1:58:02looking. It's very best.
- 1:58:05Then look no further. Apart from maybe the ghost
- 1:58:09Monument. Oh yes.
- 1:58:12Well, they went South Africa this time.
- 1:58:13Well they know and my very last thing is going to be the
- 1:58:20Regeneration and I agree with you.
- 1:58:22I agree with Mark. I do think it's one of the best
- 1:58:24from the new series and from the entire run and I think it's
- 1:58:28really refreshing to not go out. It's tragic as in things like
- 1:58:34coming to an end but it's really optimistic for the future and
- 1:58:38that's Jodie. Whittaker has doctor is like
- 1:58:41what's coming. Bring it on, you know?
- 1:58:44Alright, I've, I've been pretty depressed this year and part of
- 1:58:50it. In fact, probably a big part of
- 1:58:53it was knowing that Jodie Whittaker was regenerating and
- 1:58:58going and I've put so much of myself.
- 1:59:02I've attached so much of myself and my problems to her doctor
- 1:59:07and that's helped me through. but that was exactly what I
- 1:59:17wanted it to be and it meant I could say goodbye to her and not
- 1:59:24Want to hide in a hole. In fact, it's done the opposite.
- 1:59:27It's bought me out of that hole again and it's made me
- 1:59:31optimistic again and saying goodbye to someone like that.
- 1:59:39It feels like a very anti dish. This isn't this isn't how it
- 1:59:45should have been. I should have been miserable and
- 1:59:48morose and depressed for years to come.
- 1:59:52But what is actually done is made me really happy.
- 1:59:54That she went out with a smile on her face with acceptance and
- 2:00:00with Grace, So it's wonderful how wonderful kind of say one
- 2:00:07little extra one. Addendum going to a while sure
- 2:00:11you can do what you want. I'm already I've already said it
- 2:00:14twice but and yes I would like to go into the Tardis.
- 2:00:19It's one of my favorite line readings and all of them.
- 2:00:23She's crazy, Robbie bitch that she is hilarious.
- 2:00:29Jeff that was a phenomenal. Thank you very much.
- 2:00:32I was such a thank you. Thanks.
- 2:00:34Thanks for picking me. If you had that many people want
- 2:00:38to do this, I'm very flattered that.
- 2:00:42There is no plan out while I'm hoping our journey doesn't end
- 2:00:45here, and that you're going to come back this thing for future
- 2:00:47appearances. Oh, yeah, I think we should go
- 2:00:49Ray backers, some point as well. Why do I feel like we should
- 2:00:54cover another classic? And I still got some absolute
- 2:00:58banging Jody's to go. I've still got to Rosa Really I
- 2:01:03haven't done rossano Myra talk about a class, it's so people
- 2:01:08would have snap that up. Now I'm done putting job either
- 2:01:12and that's my personal favorite of this era.
- 2:01:14Really, I'm quite surprised by that because I think they're two
- 2:01:20of the more well receive Jodie Whittaker stories on.
- 2:01:24They people are snapped up arachnids in the UK and that was
- 2:01:29nice. Wasn't it 85?
- 2:01:32Yeah. Well, that was inevitable.
- 2:01:35Everyone had to make way for Pete for that one.
- 2:01:38He said no one's gone for the Battle of France, Carrasco loss
- 2:01:41over. So yeah, which I don't hate as a
- 2:01:44storm. So if you ever want someone to
- 2:01:46Champion that wall, consider my lap.
- 2:01:50We'll talk. All right.
- 2:01:52We will talk but a massive. Thank you.
- 2:01:56Thank you. My heart's, you as well because
- 2:01:58as ever, you're brilliant, you will Allow yourself to be
- 2:02:02awesomely vulnerable and open on this thing and I just love it.
- 2:02:06So thank you very much. You're more than welcome and
- 2:02:09thank you for having me. And for all the times that you
- 2:02:12have make on there, now it's always a pleasure to come and
- 2:02:16talk to you and be a little part of a hand fan.
- 2:02:19I'll see why it's ever-expanding and mentioning the hand fan.
- 2:02:24I will be placing at the end of this recording seven or eight
- 2:02:29audio clips of the Fam with their own reasons as to why, and
- 2:02:34everyone pay particular attention to loosen McCall's,
- 2:02:37last line. Alright, this is the filthiest
- 2:02:39thing you've ever owed on this thing.
- 2:02:40All right. Jeff, thank you very much.
- 2:02:45I'm just gonna say to you until next time.
- 2:02:48Until next time. I think if you were to sit down
- 2:02:51and set yourself the challenge of trying to distill 60 years of
- 2:02:55Doctor, Who into a 90-minute drama, you would be very hard
- 2:03:00push not to write power of the doctor.
- 2:03:02I mean, it had absolutely everything from the last six
- 2:03:06years and I don't just mean the companions, the past doctors and
- 2:03:10everything like that, it had the drama.
- 2:03:13Had the silliness. It had tradition.
- 2:03:17It had absolutely everything you could possibly want.
- 2:03:20And then on top of that, it had the dark turning to the Cybermen
- 2:03:24with the unspoken line of dialogue.
- 2:03:27Well, he's not with me that loony dancing to Ra Ra Rasputin,
- 2:03:31I mean, really, I cannot think of any other show that could do
- 2:03:36all of that in 90 minutes and still be completely and utterly
- 2:03:40faithful to the concept and the Heart of the series.
- 2:03:47Hello, gents Lucy here. Giving you my update on how I
- 2:03:51felt about the power of the doctor and my main feelings.
- 2:03:55Last night was absolute Joy. I really, really enjoyed
- 2:03:59watching it. I had one of those evenings.
- 2:04:03We're pretty cool faculties, just get suspended and I'm just
- 2:04:06going to go with it and watch it and and hopefully love it.
- 2:04:10And I did, I loved seeing the old familiar faces back again,
- 2:04:15and the devices. Is that we use to bring them
- 2:04:17back? Were really well done.
- 2:04:19I thought I haven't seen a lot of Sasha Dylan's Master before,
- 2:04:24but I enjoyed his performance. I know that Kate is not a
- 2:04:29universally popular figure with the hand fan.
- 2:04:33But this time she was Brave and Brilliant and I still haven't
- 2:04:38quite recovered from how she decided to give herself up and
- 2:04:41nearly got turned into a cyber person.
- 2:04:44I haven't been this emotionally. I used with a.
- 2:04:49Companion character for quite some time.
- 2:04:51So it really did, take me by surprise a bit About the ending.
- 2:04:58I can understand why people wanted to have a more definite
- 2:05:03ending to The Arc of the relationship between Yaz and the
- 2:05:07doctor, but I did think it was quite well managed and I loved
- 2:05:11the companions getting together. Again, at the end, especially
- 2:05:14seeing William. Russell was really lovely one.
- 2:05:17Final more frivolous point. I'd thought about it in relation
- 2:05:21to the new doctor. But As the master regenerated
- 2:05:26into the doctors clothing. I was wondering if he'd spent
- 2:05:29part of the evening at least wearing women's underwear.
- 2:05:32Thank you. And goodnight.
- 2:05:42Hello, it's Luke from Lost on Gallifrey and I thought that
- 2:05:46Jodie Whittaker was terrible. Chibnall was awful and the whole
- 2:05:52era has been just an awful mess. That is what I thought at 7:30
- 2:05:59on Sunday night. But now I just don't know what
- 2:06:02to think. Chibnall good, Jodi brilliance.
- 2:06:07Era redeemed. I don't know if I tell you, I
- 2:06:11do, you know, I think Chris chibnall did a fucking fantastic
- 2:06:16job at basically celebrating. 100 Years of Doctor Who I
- 2:06:21thought having all the cameos, all Nostalgia, how could you not
- 2:06:25enjoy it? If you're a fan of the show and
- 2:06:27I think for a one-off special like this, a big 100 years
- 2:06:32celebrate. Sorry the classic the new that
- 2:06:35that's absolutely perfect and the amount of things Things that
- 2:06:37you might have knocked off or stolen that the master dancing
- 2:06:41to a song, the journeys Empire, and the Tardis that all felt
- 2:06:46like really charm and references to me, I thought it gives a toss
- 2:06:51about the story. We never give a toss about the
- 2:06:52story in these sort of episodes. It was so good and I just lost
- 2:06:58my head as soon as Paul McGann appeared and to be fair, I got a
- 2:07:01thought years, had a really nice exit.
- 2:07:04I thought you has got rid of some agency.
- 2:07:07I'm probably the best I've ever seen, she didn't want to be with
- 2:07:11any other doctor and I thought I would put came across perfectly
- 2:07:15within the story when the doctor got changed to the master and
- 2:07:19got a really nice send-off as well and Jody got a really
- 2:07:21understated regeneration which was really nice and the last
- 2:07:25couple of seconds before I knew it was going to happen.
- 2:07:28I could have predicted well they predict what's going to happen
- 2:07:31but didn't you just lose your head anyway, what a fantastic
- 2:07:36episode, it was Chibnall good amazing.
- 2:07:39End to Jody Sera possibly his finest and her finest hour.
- 2:07:45Well, what can I say about the power of the dr.
- 2:07:49Chris Chappell Chef's curse. Absolutely brilliant.
- 2:07:53Just I think we've all been setting for the last couple of
- 2:07:56nights thinking. Try to process everything that
- 2:07:59we saw. Great send-off for Jordi,
- 2:08:02beautiful regeneration. At the end, mom did goes best
- 2:08:04performances. He has the master us, Rasputin,
- 2:08:08just fantastic seeing past doctors, we all screed, but the
- 2:08:13best moment for me, I was a child again, seeing my doctor
- 2:08:17with is half that woman, just brilliant great episode.
- 2:08:25How can you have an opinion on the power of the doctor, and
- 2:08:30episode, so fun packed, so manic, so insane.
- 2:08:34And so utterly, thrilling and full of heart and love and joy
- 2:08:38that opinions just melt in its wake.
- 2:08:41It was probably the most thrilling, 90 minutes of
- 2:08:46television I have ever seen and very rapidly has become my
- 2:08:51favorite Doctor Who episode. It is the first time in Years
- 2:08:55that I have wanted to immediately re watch an episode
- 2:09:00after watching it for the first time, even The Day of the
- 2:09:03Doctor, the previous high point of the series, the previous
- 2:09:07delight and joy of doctors coming together, that doesn't
- 2:09:10have an ounce on what the power of the doctor has.
- 2:09:14It is absolutely stunning and funny and beautiful.
- 2:09:19So many Beautiful Moments, my God, the images of this.
- 2:09:23Just the bit where Yaz is carrying the doctor, the
- 2:09:27Regeneration, on the clifftop, The Cliff Edge, where she meets.
- 2:09:31The other doctors, this is the chip molera Rich, the chip
- 2:09:36molera writ large. It is everything, everything.
- 2:09:40Every manic idea that doctor, who could possibly have all
- 2:09:44crammed into 90, crazy minutes. I wouldn't want it.
- 2:09:47I wouldn't want it to be like this every week, but for a
- 2:09:50special for that one time, this is what you'd want.
- 2:09:55From a Doctor Who movie it covers time and space and people
- 2:10:00and the past and the future of the show, all in one, it was
- 2:10:04magnificent and I just wish that we could have a bit more time.
- 2:10:10And also it's the first time that the doctor has been killed
- 2:10:13by a giant space jellyfish. So that's a new thing.
- 2:10:18But what's not new is the amount of heart that is poured into all
- 2:10:22of these episodes. It is absolutely.
- 2:10:24Coming from the right place, which is this place of joy and
- 2:10:29wonder, and excitement and you see it in the young people, the
- 2:10:34show attracts the people you see, at the conventions, dress
- 2:10:37to Jodie, Whittaker, it is bringing these people on board
- 2:10:41and if you can't always measure it in the number of people who
- 2:10:46think it's brilliant, but sometimes you can measure it in
- 2:10:49the number of people who absolutely love it.
- 2:10:52And I am a sucker. Because I am one of those people
- 2:10:56who absolutely loves it. Hello Joanne, Jeff.
- 2:11:04It is a friend in here. I'm just having to talk quietly.
- 2:11:08There's a lady here, has really upped the power of the daughter
- 2:11:11for me. Continue dumb.
- 2:11:13The upward Trend in quality of this era, in my opinion, from
- 2:11:17flux and Eve of the Daleks and what it did was it embraced the
- 2:11:23strength of this hero while also doing new things.
- 2:11:26And that's really funny because there weren't as many new
- 2:11:30characters. As one might expect it was all
- 2:11:31about the old Garrett. The emotionality of the scenes
- 2:11:36between Yaz and the doctor. I thought were beautifully well
- 2:11:39handled and I was in floods with them.
- 2:11:44The ice cream deciding on top of the toughest at the end.
- 2:11:48And what I love about the title is the power of the doctor is a
- 2:11:52bunch of people getting together to talk about how wonderful the
- 2:11:57doctor is and how much the doctor has improved Our lives,
- 2:12:02our lives their lives. And yeah, I thought that was an
- 2:12:07absolutely beautiful sentiment to end on and all that after 90
- 2:12:12minutes, that was fun. Funny dramatic exciting end up
- 2:12:16breaking. So yeah, I really enjoyed that.
- 2:12:21Tomorrow night, I'll be recording Jodi into Terror.
- 2:12:22Tune in Hi Joe, absolutely loved the power of the doctor,
- 2:12:30basically sat there for 90 minutes with a big grin on my
- 2:12:33face and a few tears to it, was lovely to see Sophie aldred, and
- 2:12:37Janet Fielding back, and they were so good.
- 2:12:40And so in character just absolutely love them.
- 2:12:44I think my favourite bit or certainly, the fit, that got me
- 2:12:48with a tears. Going was the group chat of the
- 2:12:50end with Bonnie and Katie and William Russell.
- 2:12:53It was just so moving and absolutely wonderful.
- 2:12:56And I'd love to see the episode again, but I'd probably be
- 2:13:00sitting there going all. I don't show not sure if that
- 2:13:02works and you know, how you do want to spoil it.
- 2:13:05It was, it was so wonderful to watch all 90 minutes of it and
- 2:13:09great fun. Anyway, hope you're, well, I'll
- 2:13:12speak to you soon. Hopefully, we'll try and get a
- 2:13:14date to sort out the commentary for Vincent of the doctor love
- 2:13:18to do that with you soon. Take care.
- 2:13:20Bye. Hello Joe.
- 2:13:27Hello Jeff. Hello.
- 2:13:30It's I I'm just I'm just been watching the power of the doctor
- 2:13:35for the second time and I'm still processing all of this
- 2:13:40because that's one of the most Bonkers Adventures has ever
- 2:13:45been. I mean, how do you take all of
- 2:13:47that in what I came away thinking was the day of the
- 2:13:53doctor is very much a celebration of Doctor Who since
- 2:13:57it came back from since Them 5, but the power of the doctor is
- 2:14:05very much a celebration of Doctor Who from 1963 to 1989.
- 2:14:12It's a celebration of the Doctor Who that we grew up with.
- 2:14:18I'm very much for me that Doctor Who that I grew up with.
- 2:14:22I this evening I was, I had a tear again at watching Tegan.
- 2:14:32See her doctor again. And yeah, it's just brilliant.
- 2:14:37I did something. I never thought I would ever see
- 2:14:43the fifth doctor and Tegan were Bye.
- 2:14:47Pretty much. My Tardis crew.
- 2:14:49When I was was young, my second, oldest group, probably, and the
- 2:14:54power that those acts as still have to move you and that
- 2:15:02Association that you build in your childhood with these
- 2:15:06characters. Then 38 years later as Tegan
- 2:15:11says, she sees her doctor again and then reunited for for a
- 2:15:18couple of minutes it's just superb and Davis is wearing the
- 2:15:22Hat. Of course, he's wearing the hat
- 2:15:25but that that's absolutely wonderful.
- 2:15:27I love that hat. You know and how how do you sum
- 2:15:32this story up with Incredible difficulty?
- 2:15:37I think It's yeah, I can't I'm not sure I can. you know,
- 2:15:46there's just something about those characters, coming back
- 2:15:49with, sing Tegan and Ace and then Joe and Mel, no was back
- 2:15:57and And then William Russell as Ian after 57 years, I mean, wow.
- 2:16:07And their doctors said, I always thought that the best way to
- 2:16:12celebrate Doctor Who was not necessarily to see the old
- 2:16:16doctors, but to see how the companions have lived and coped,
- 2:16:20and what they've done, after they leave the doctor.
- 2:16:25And Chris chibnall did that with our Plum.
- 2:16:28He Took those characters that we'd loved expanded their lives
- 2:16:33and did them perfect Justice. And meanwhile we've got the news
- 2:16:38companion, Dan leaving in a beautiful scene.
- 2:16:41We've got so much going on. We've got such to one being
- 2:16:45gorgeous and evil more evil and dangerous and I think we've seen
- 2:16:50the master in a long time. We've got the Daleks and
- 2:16:54Cybermen and the master teaming up and wow just just Superb and
- 2:17:00then cap it. All right.
- 2:17:03At the end we have the most magnificent and beautiful
- 2:17:08uplifting regeneration and I know we don't get many,
- 2:17:14uplifting Gendry Generations. I think this Christopher
- 2:17:17Eccleston and that's it. All the others are sad, but this
- 2:17:22one was just full of joy. Like Jody's doctor was full of
- 2:17:25joy and too. Subscribe to see her on the top
- 2:17:31of durdle door where I used to have my childhood holidays.
- 2:17:36We stayed there a lot in the 80s in the Caravan park there.
- 2:17:39That's where I watched the first episode of trial of a Time.
- 2:17:42Lord in 1986. There's just so many
- 2:17:46associations with that that place for me and to see her
- 2:17:51regenerate on the top of durdle door in the most beautiful and
- 2:17:56breathtaking piece of cinematography.
- 2:17:58If I do this, I mean the whole story looked epic and Brilliant
- 2:18:03and like the whole of the Jodi era has oh it is such a step up.
- 2:18:08Isn't it to where we've been before?
- 2:18:12But that was just brilliant. Absolutely brilliant and you
- 2:18:18know what Jodi was to her first words.
- 2:18:24Oh brilliant. I have summed up.
- 2:18:26Her doctor for me I have loved In a way that I didn't expect
- 2:18:31to, I didn't expect to be wowed like this and fall in love with
- 2:18:34another doctor that. Yeah, she just works for me, so
- 2:18:41I that's it. You know, I don't think I can
- 2:18:46sum this story up yet. I'm going to need another couple
- 2:18:49of watches, so to get it all in my head last night, I was trying
- 2:18:53to go to sleep and just circling round and round my head.
- 2:18:57You got Just little things come back because it's funny and
- 2:19:02Brilliant. And that's the most amazing
- 2:19:05thing is that that's suddenly Chris chibnall has gone for it.
- 2:19:12You know, and the story might not make sense and bits of it
- 2:19:16might not make sense for who cares when you're along for the
- 2:19:19ride and your swept along with this.
- 2:19:23Sometimes that's just what you need.
- 2:19:26And that's the power of the doctor, isn't it?
- 2:19:30It's a show that gets in your head quite often.
- 2:19:34When you're young, not always for everyone.
- 2:19:38But age for this, show seized my imagination and took me on
- 2:19:41adventures, and I think Chris chibnall is the same and, and
- 2:19:47Steven, Moffat, and Russell, T Davies, and everyone else.
- 2:19:50There's just something about this show that is Magic.
- 2:19:54And last night's Doctor, Who was magic.
- 2:19:58So, thank you sash. Thank you man.
- 2:20:02Dip, thank you Chris. But most of all.
- 2:20:06Thank you Jody. You were brilliant.
- 2:20:13All right, so we'll give this a go, then it's all a bit strange,
- 2:20:16talking to myself, but let's give it a go see how we get on.
- 2:20:19Talk about power of the doctor, which was just Sublime.
- 2:20:24It was excellent. It was one of the best episodes
- 2:20:28of Doctor Who I've ever seen and so much Donovan that from the
- 2:20:33very start from that bullet tree and seen with the Cyber Masters,
- 2:20:39doing the heist in the doctor and everyone stopped in it.
- 2:20:41That was just Action packed in amazing and such a devons
- 2:20:48performance as the master or throughout.
- 2:20:53You know, he's still got that unhinged Edge to him, but turned
- 2:20:56down a little bit. I felt brilliant.
- 2:21:00Absolutely brilliant. And put, thus the whole story
- 2:21:04was just so good and hats off to Triple.
- 2:21:08Its that was his 60th anniversary special.
- 2:21:11That was him gone. Here you go.
- 2:21:13Here's my anniversary. As the 60th mic drop, go on
- 2:21:16Rusty off. You go with that beat that one
- 2:21:20and he just nailed every single part of it and getting your
- 2:21:22doctor's back was just such a brilliant move, the way he's
- 2:21:26done it as well, and to account. For them B.
- 2:21:29Knox was no explanation of that was no explanation of why the
- 2:21:33doctors were older but we didn't need one.
- 2:21:35They were just there in the sort of afterlife of regenerations,
- 2:21:40hanging around. Poor, my God, bless them.
- 2:21:44Cried when Paul McGann came out. I don't know why, but that was
- 2:21:47just so good. Everyone else is wearing robes,
- 2:21:51but Paul McGann isn't and there's just so many nice little
- 2:21:55bits for the fans in that. It was, it was really was a love
- 2:21:58letter. The human fandom, wasn't it all?
- 2:22:02Those just little little Easter eggs, like the mustache, Dalek
- 2:22:07plan in him dressing for the occasion.
- 2:22:11Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.
- 2:22:12I can't. I'm running out with nice things
- 2:22:16to say about this the storm. That's how much I loved it.
- 2:22:19And put the heart of the story is seeing goodbye.
- 2:22:26You know, it starts with dancing and goodbye.
- 2:22:29And it's such a Brusque quick way from to go, you know, you
- 2:22:34come from Legend of the sea Devils where he's having the
- 2:22:36time of his life dressing as a pirate.
- 2:22:39It's the last thing you see coming that he's just going to
- 2:22:41stand angle. No, actually I'm done now and
- 2:22:43say goodbye but that's the type of goodbye.
- 2:22:46We're used to of, you know, just a couple of minutes and your
- 2:22:50mind's made up and off you go. But the rest of the story The
- 2:22:55rest of the episode deals with goodbyes lead and up, obviously,
- 2:22:58to the doctor in years saying goodbye.
- 2:23:03The thing I love the most was the interactions that the
- 2:23:06doctors got with their past companions.
- 2:23:08Again, Sylvester and tool for you together.
- 2:23:14Quality at me, I just saw wonderful scene though, still
- 2:23:16getting whacked again. And I've seen them in the
- 2:23:20context of it is in the doctor haven't left on the best of
- 2:23:23terms. So the opportunity for them to
- 2:23:25come together and have that proper goodbye.
- 2:23:30Just unbelievable. But the biggest moment was was
- 2:23:34obviously the fifth doctor and Tegan and Janet fielding, and
- 2:23:38Peter Davison. Stood there, go on, I've missed
- 2:23:40you, I've missed you too, again, hoping you're not be moved by
- 2:23:43that More Tears, on this side. Just Our Chip.
- 2:23:48It'll hold you. Hold you down that?
- 2:23:51Brilliant absolutely brilliant. And then obviously it leads up
- 2:23:54to yours is good by which I thought was just absolutely
- 2:23:58superb and it just felt so real and so natural.
- 2:24:04By that point, you know, the doctors injured.
- 2:24:07He has is carried out at the Tardis.
- 2:24:09Everyone else has been dropped off in the have this heart to
- 2:24:12heart and the will, the won't the other going to kiss other
- 2:24:15going to make up The Feelings? Not, we try that know.
- 2:24:17Don't. And then it's time for you guys
- 2:24:20to go because she knows her doctors changing.
- 2:24:23It's not going to be her doctors, not going to be the
- 2:24:25woman that she's fallen in love with and so she can't hang
- 2:24:29around and so she leaves and that's just it just really
- 2:24:34touched me. It really moved me.
- 2:24:35I thought it was absolutely fantastic.
- 2:24:38And I know there's people out there quibbling about it.
- 2:24:40I know there's an easier than it because you know, seeing that
- 2:24:43the should of Kissed, But Nah, it didn't need it, it didn't
- 2:24:49need it. You know, wouldn't need the
- 2:24:51Tenth Doctor and Rose kissing and bad wolf.
- 2:24:54Be I'm anything. I cut.
- 2:24:56It works better without it and I think in this instance, it
- 2:24:58worked better as well without them actually getting there.
- 2:25:05I guess a nit Pickers, in this whatever heard, obviously
- 2:25:08Dunn's, quick departure. Nah, it works.
- 2:25:14It works in the context of the story.
- 2:25:15It's all about goodbyes, the Masters plan.
- 2:25:20The Masters plan was silly. What was the point of the master
- 2:25:24regenerating into the doctor or the doctor with genuine in the
- 2:25:27Mustang, him getting her body? I mean, I can see how that makes
- 2:25:31sense, because obviously the master the man whose notorious
- 2:25:34for burning through all, these were generations and wanting to
- 2:25:37extend his life forever. I would definitely not want to
- 2:25:40inhabit the body of the Homeless child, and can we generate
- 2:25:43forever and ever and ever Alex? Ultimately, when it comes down
- 2:25:51to it, Julie's last scene is just stunning.
- 2:25:57Absolutely stunning with this is the doctor visits hard.
- 2:26:00So much love and positivity and optimism and hope through out of
- 2:26:05our entire one. And that plays out in that last
- 2:26:09scene, should drop see as off One Last Sunset, the blossom is
- 2:26:13Blossom and that final word tag, you're it.
- 2:26:17Before she regenerates, in was Sunshine sunrise.
- 2:26:23In Rainbow flushes, rainbow regeneration.
- 2:26:27Energy is just I can't think of a more perfect way for her
- 2:26:33doctor to go out. I think, you know, I've only
- 2:26:38watched at the one so far and I watched it with my eldest son
- 2:26:41who talked all the way through. So there's Lords that I've
- 2:26:43missed this probably Lords more, Easter eggs, that I've missed.
- 2:26:49But, you know, I'm looking forward to going back and watch
- 2:26:51it again but it's all blades up there with the Day of the Doctor
- 2:26:54for me is it's just one of those perfect episodes of Doctor Who
- 2:26:59you know, this is one we're going to come back and watch it
- 2:27:01again and again and again this is one where we're going to be
- 2:27:03thinking. You know, we want a warm hug, we
- 2:27:07want warm hug from Doctor Who, and we want to remind ourselves
- 2:27:11of what it means to be a fan of Doctor Who.
- 2:27:13And we want to see Ian Chesterton sitting around with
- 2:27:16all the other Earthbound companions are still, with us
- 2:27:20in, this is the one that we're going to come back to, isn't it?
- 2:27:24It's just, it's just brilliant. I mean well done Cheryl who
- 2:27:33thought you could write like this?
- 2:27:35He's once again how can we go from the Wi-Fi family and
- 2:27:42resolution to havin a cyber Masters and the Dalek look at
- 2:27:48each other like that. When the master is Cossack
- 2:27:52dance, entire Rasputin. You just wouldn't believe it but
- 2:27:56hats off to the man. He's absolutely nailed it.
- 2:27:59You know he nailed flux that was a fantastic season to go out on
- 2:28:03either the Daleks You know, legend of the sea devils not as
- 2:28:08bad as everyone says but you know, to go out on this high is
- 2:28:11just stunning stunning. And I really think most rtds.
- 2:28:16He's got his work cut out now the to keep up with that.
- 2:28:20So Basically go as my thought.
