- 5:48It was in the vicinity. It was in the vicinity.
- 5:50We know how that goes man. Mike, we appreciate you joining
- 5:53us here tonight. I think you got me all right,
- 5:55one more person. Next panelist he's checking in
- 5:59from the West Coast in sunny and he's saying hot Ela, which I
- 6:04know that's that's unusual for them out.
- 6:06There he is. The co-founder and one third of
- 6:09the sons of Saturday podcast, a preseason trailer.
- 6:12May even if y'all hadn't seen what he dropped a couple weeks
- 6:14ago that it was tight. I loved it.
- 6:18Also a guy who's got some connections back to Halifax
- 6:21County for me and mr. Siegel here, Grayson wimbush.
- 6:24How you doing tonight, man? What's going on gentlemen?
- 6:27How we doing? Thank you for having me in the
- 6:29building. I'm very, very excited about
- 6:31this. Yeah, we appreciate you jumping
- 6:34on. I'm looking forward to it.
- 6:35I know you're out there in Sunny La.
- 6:39I'm surprised that you're hotter than us.
- 6:41I know we got some we got some 80 mid-80s temps coming up next
- 6:45week and you guys are probably out there blazing spray and it's
- 6:48a dry heat back on the East Coast.
- 6:50L got the humidity we don't have here is a hundred percent on
- 6:53that Grace and I think it was 90 in like a 10-6 index here in
- 6:57Richmond today. Walk outside storage sweating
- 7:00before you take three steps. So Absolutely, you know me, I'm
- 7:03sweating. I'm sweating standing still,
- 7:05it's 73. So if it's humid Ron you see you
- 7:08sweat in the wintertime and, you know, that not.
- 7:12All right. So guys, we really appreciate
- 7:15you all joining us tonight. A lot of great voices, a lot of
- 7:20great voices. A lot of good opinions.
- 7:23Got a lot of good thoughts, lot of good background.
- 7:25So before we jump on, it was just going to say a couple
- 7:27things for the live listeners tonight.
- 7:29If you guys have any questions or comments for this panel, I'll
- 7:32let us know if your questions are for a specific panelist.
- 7:37Please specify that panelists so we can get them to question.
- 7:40So we might throw someone here in real time.
- 7:43Some of you guys did respond yesterday to a tweet.
- 7:46Brian put out. We really appreciate that.
- 7:48Now one other thing kind of already talked about it with the
- 7:53guys here. Big thank you to all of again
- 7:56and to all your listeners joining us tonight.
- 7:58A lot of fun going to happen but we're going to start off with is
- 8:01we're going to give everybody. One question.
- 8:04Y'all know we gave you all those earlier just you know I don't
- 8:07like I don't like you know ambushing anybody but for the
- 8:10other guys kind of we mentioned before if y'all have something
- 8:13y'all want to say feel free to piggyback.
- 8:16If you've got a different Viewpoint let us know and we'll
- 8:19do it. So Brian, what we got up first?
- 8:23All right, so we're going to let our Elder Statesman, Dwight Vic
- 8:26lead off tonight. First question for him, since
- 8:30coach Pride was hired, you've had a chance to talk with him.
- 8:32A few times. Is there a standout intangible
- 8:36factor for Success that you think Brent pry brings to the
- 8:40table? That might help the team this
- 8:41year? Oh yeah, that's you guys can
- 8:44hear me, right? Yeah, we got you.
- 8:47We got you on Glee. That's a great question.
- 8:49You know, I, you know, I I know coach prior but seeing him in
- 8:52this role being back in Blacksburg and talking to him
- 8:56and talk to me the spring game. I was there several weeks after
- 8:59the spring game? They were doing some install
- 9:01right before the season kicked off text him when he first got
- 9:05the job the biggest difference. I see and just him being here in
- 9:11six months is that he's invested That he cares.
- 9:14I know that's like a simplistic answer but at the end of the day
- 9:17I think you could tell and just talking to him and talking to
- 9:20some guys up here in the DMV where I live Northern Virginia
- 9:23Maryland d.c. kids. I know being recruited.
- 9:26They just know what's a different energy and you could
- 9:28just tell like he's really invested in Virginia Tech.
- 9:30It's not you know a midpoint stopping ground like he is
- 9:34really trying to put a foothold in Virginia throughout the
- 9:37Commonwealth but also he's really connecting to the alumni
- 9:41like the guys like me and McLaughlin and And all the guys
- 9:44from the 90s, the 80s and 70s, and the 2000s.
- 9:47And I think in regards this season, I think when you got
- 9:51guys like Eddie Royal coming back, you know, I'll be up there
- 9:53probably next week and a lot of guys are coming back just to
- 9:56come and watch practices. There's a connection there where
- 10:01the last five years, there was a disconnect between what the
- 10:05expectations for Virginia. Tech football should be and what
- 10:08the previous regime had. And I don't think those guys.
- 10:11I said this on down V space before Before I don't think the
- 10:14current players or the guy that just recently left, understood
- 10:18what it meant to be a Hokie Football player.
- 10:20I think it was just, they were competing wearing the colors and
- 10:23uniform, but I think the guys there now, specifically pride
- 10:27and his staff, from what I see, they understand what it means
- 10:31and what they are supposed to be doing.
- 10:32Like he just genuinely cares about the program.
- 10:35I'm last point. When I was there for the spring
- 10:38game, I talked to him, you know, we chopped it up.
- 10:41He wanted to take a picture of my wife.
- 10:43Talk to every form of play that came through when we had the
- 10:46field house or actually endorse getting some barbecue.
- 10:50He's just talking and he just you can just tell it's not like
- 10:52fake. It's not manufactured height.
- 10:54Like he really has a plan. You could just tell that the
- 10:57players are bonded to it, you know, as much as I love the
- 10:59former players, we're not playing no more.
- 11:01The current guys stay there right there rocking with them.
- 11:03And I think you can just see the energy when they practice and I
- 11:06talked to a few guys that are on the team now, and they were
- 11:09talking about, this is the hardest they've ever worked
- 11:12since they've been in touch. So I love hearing that.
- 11:16Yeah, it sounds like that emphasis on that competition,
- 11:19that competitiveness and practiced.
- 11:21I think that's the big thing and getting back to that that that
- 11:25culture that Virginia Tech built.
- 11:27You know, it started started with you know the guys before
- 11:29you you kind of built on that and then obviously the 2000s I
- 11:33got taken to a different level there.
- 11:35So getting that culture back and understanding that you said what
- 11:38it means to be a hokie. I think that's going to be big
- 11:40for this year, fresh out. Absolutely.
- 11:44All right, so let's flip it over.
- 11:45And let's take a look at what's going on inside this Camp, heard
- 11:48about the competition and stuff. So I'm going to flip it over to
- 11:50David Cunningham David, you know you've had some up close look at
- 11:55the camp practices since last week, you know, some some views
- 11:59on Wednesday and Friday other than quarterback, because we all
- 12:03want to know, is it going to be Grant?
- 12:04Wells are going to be Jason Brown under center.
- 12:07It's 7:30 down at ODU, what other key position battles.
- 12:12Do you have your eyes on? In about to get your first look
- 12:16at week 2 tomorrow and start speaking with people.
- 12:19Yeah, I well, first of all, I think Grant Wells.
- 12:22I think most people know that Grant Wells is kind of leading
- 12:25candidate right now on the coaching staff is kind of not
- 12:29said that directly but they've alluded to it.
- 12:31But as far as other position battles go but one of the things
- 12:34I've said multiple times, whether it's on the text,
- 12:36sideline podcast, or written articles, or set it on the
- 12:39radio, is that text starting, 22 on both.
- 12:43Sides of the ball is pretty solid but it's the depth.
- 12:47It's the young guys that debt that's really where the question
- 12:51marks lie I think wide receiver Caleb Smith, he's proven Gaiden
- 12:57blue transferred from Temple. We kind of know what he's going
- 12:59to bring to the table but do on Lofton genuine Jones downright
- 13:06that kind of that group of guys, I'm really curious to see who
- 13:10kind of steps up as wide receiver number 3, number 4,
- 13:13Even some young guys like freshman Tucker Holloway you
- 13:16know, he was rapping with the twos last week in practice.
- 13:19I think that position group, it can't just be two guys the
- 13:23entire season and as on the other side of the ball, I think
- 13:28at Sam linebacker. That's a new position for Brent
- 13:31pry. And this defensive scheme count
- 13:34to Jenkins Jr, Walker, and Keely, Lawson role working
- 13:37there. And it seems like can't Jenkins
- 13:39has the edge, but these are three guys who have never played
- 13:42the position. Before so how that position
- 13:44unfolds kind of what Brett prai is looking for.
- 13:47And Chris Marv, the defensive coordinator what they're looking
- 13:50for in that position. I think those are the two main
- 13:53main position battles. So to speak.
- 13:56I'm keeping my eye on. Yeah, and it makes a lot of
- 13:59sense. You talk about the 22.
- 14:01I think most of us would say you look around at the 22 like we
- 14:04have good players but it's get into 23 to 35 where it's like
- 14:09this is scary. If you know if somebody goes
- 14:12down we Could be in a, we could definitely be in a lot of
- 14:15trouble. Yeah, especially, especially
- 14:18when you look at the offensive line and defensive line.
- 14:20I think that's kind of defensive line, is a little bit more depth
- 14:23but but especially on the offensive line.
- 14:26It's a lot of a lot of guys working in the in the too deep
- 14:30with that second and third teams that are, maybe former Walk-Ons
- 14:33or current Walk-Ons. And, you know, when you've only
- 14:36got four or five guys, that upfront that it, that have
- 14:40played before in a ACC game where FPS game period, you know,
- 14:46if There is some injuries. You know, that doesn't really
- 14:49bode well for your season. Yeah, absolutely.
- 14:53Depth in the trenches is definitely my biggest fear and
- 14:57I'm just going to kind of Swing this over to to John here, back
- 15:02in the spring. Coach prize said, you know, we
- 15:05kind of got six offensive linemen that he feels like he's
- 15:08ready to go with. And there's a lot of question
- 15:10marks after that, you know, since then, we've got a couple
- 15:14true freshman that have hit the roster.
- 15:16We One that switch from defensive and offensive line.
- 15:19So let me ask you this from your experience and thank you
- 15:22specifically about Joe Rudolph. With this current roster.
- 15:27We're certain coaches in your past, able to push you harder
- 15:30and get more out of you than others and how necessary think
- 15:33that will be for the offense of success this year?
- 15:36Absolutely, you know, I think, I think back to when Jeff bronze
- 15:39was the coach and we were always competing, he would sometimes
- 15:43put a third string and the first string for practice and that
- 15:46first thing Guys looking like, you know, why is he in the first
- 15:49Dream? It's because you slack off
- 15:51yesterday. So I think I think it's got the
- 15:54mentality to man. I think he's all about competing
- 15:57and he you know, he's he's so technical with his coaching and
- 16:00I think we could quit plays and Tall just the way they did in
- 16:03their eyes in the right place. And everything to watch.
- 16:08So that kind of helps the death because I think they're going to
- 16:11be coach. Well I think that that second
- 16:12we're going to be coach, we're going to get in there early but
- 16:15you're like like David said, you know, one man go down.
- 16:17You know, we looking on paper, we're looking you know kind of
- 16:21rough there on death but with put Rudolph we would definitely
- 16:24got to know. Yeah, it's good to hear.
- 16:28I think you know, as you said getting getting guys that are
- 16:31coached up in at least knows what they're doing.
- 16:33How to do it, have the fundamentals in place and that
- 16:37gives you something to build off and I think some of the young
- 16:39guys, particularly thinking Braylon more and Xavier
- 16:43chaplain, I think they definitely have high ceilings
- 16:47even if they weren't necessarily the highest-rated guys coming
- 16:49in. So I think there's some, there's
- 16:51some opportunity there as well. Absolutely, I will flip it over
- 16:57to veto next year. We do, you were one of the first
- 17:01on the fire food, train, several years ago.
- 17:04You've talked into Utah as Banks.
- 17:22You take a look at this roster. This year.
- 17:25Is there anybody? The prior regime is maybe
- 17:27failed. You think it could stand out in
- 17:292022 or maybe it's a good player and it goes from being a good
- 17:33player to like that boys, gonna get drafted in the first two
- 17:35rounds of make some money. I mean, for real for real, I
- 17:40think everybody that was kind of negatively affected left
- 17:44already. Whether that was to the draft,
- 17:47or to the workforce. I think everybody would just
- 17:50like, yo, we out. Um, so there really was no good.
- 17:54Answer because I mean Dax came back but he's had a full career
- 17:59already. So I would say Malachi Thomas
- 18:02even though he was he didn't, I wouldn't say they failed him
- 18:05last year, it was a freshman, but he was hidden.
- 18:08So now, you know, only only thing I can say is who else have
- 18:13they stashed? That we don't know.
- 18:15It's probably more mr. Eden, because who we saw do got
- 18:19failed. They left for real for real.
- 18:23I like that point man I love the point.
- 18:24You just made about the negativity that you know, some
- 18:27of the guys are gone that had that negative outlook and I
- 18:30laugh about your back to your decks, had a full career.
- 18:33That's just got lucky with covid.
- 18:34He gets one more season. Hey hold on.
- 18:37Hold on bro. Go ahead big Dwight.
- 18:40How long is how long has that been there?
- 18:43This is his fifth year so it's just five years.
- 18:47Yeah. Do it.
- 19:13We heard a indexes name since late 2016, exactly.
- 19:17But due to point, I like what Don said their house, I'm going
- 19:20to give you kudos to that, man, because what you just said about
- 19:23our their players that got stashed that were in dog houses
- 19:27that were good players that the other staff just didn't put on
- 19:32the field. And to be honest, with the white
- 19:35said what we're hearing about, Joe Rudolph.
- 19:37I don't think that's going to happen.
- 19:39I think if you're the best player, I don't care who you
- 19:43are. You're going to To be on the
- 19:44field against Saudi You in September.
- 19:51Yeah, I'm with that. I agree.
- 19:52I think they're going to they're going to find a way to get the
- 19:54best guys out there and I think I think Talent evaluation so far
- 19:59has been better with the new regime, just from what I'm
- 20:02seeing with, how they're playing with depth charts, how they're
- 20:05getting more out of guys that we didn't see really a lot from
- 20:10last year. I don't think you just see that
- 20:12success out the gate. But, you know, we'll see how
- 20:15that turns into anything in 2022.
- 20:17David Cunningham you got somebody.
- 20:21Yeah, I think. Yeah, I mentioned Keshawn King.
- 20:24I think he's a running back who, you know, he's entering his
- 20:28third or fourth season now and we saw a glimpses of him whether
- 20:32it's in the backfield or returning kicks.
- 20:34But, you know, he kind of, I don't want to say he had
- 20:38off-the-field issues, but he, there were things that held him
- 20:42back from playing and he, you know, when Brent Prayin the
- 20:48staff came in Brian admitted, okay?
- 20:51They're going to be guys that leave.
- 20:54They're going to be guys that don't gel with the culture and
- 20:57want to leave. And clearly Keshawn King is a
- 21:00guy and he just one example of a guy who maybe got in that
- 21:05doghouse in air quotes if you want to put it that way who, you
- 21:10know, has an opportunity. Now, you know, we've seen in the
- 21:14two practices. I got to see last week with the
- 21:16rest of the media, no Keyshawn Kings looking explosive.
- 21:18He's No, he's looks like he's developed more and I'm curious
- 21:24with this new culture around the program.
- 21:28How many other guys like that? Who were, maybe held back or
- 21:32didn't receive an opportunity because of something that went
- 21:35on, maybe behind the scenes discipline related, whatever it
- 21:39might be that are getting a new life.
- 21:42So to speak with this new staff, John.
- 21:46Go ahead with what you got to say, man.
- 21:50Yeah, I was gonna say, man, you haven't seen a lot of players
- 21:52leave and that's important. That's important.
- 21:56That a lot of a lot of players have a left for the portal or
- 21:58even when you know, coach when they came in and bhima was gone.
- 22:01We had Charlie Evans left me, I can do left for the drive.
- 22:04You have you haven't seen a lot of that this year, you know?
- 22:06So I think that's important that they're actually saying, hey, we
- 22:10want you to stay, you want you to be a part of this thing or at
- 22:12least give the spring to try, you know, then, you know, you
- 22:15see where you go. I think they've had those
- 22:16one-on-one meeting with you player, so that that means a lot
- 22:19too. Yeah, it sounded like out the
- 22:22gate, the process. He's going to have a lot of
- 22:23difficult conversations with folks and, you know, be honest
- 22:26with where they, where they're standing now and where they
- 22:28potentially see them standing, you know, by the end of spring
- 22:31and then by the start of fall weather that is a position
- 22:34change. Whether that is focusing more on
- 22:37being a depth player, this year versus somebody that's going to
- 22:40be in the starting lineup, consistently.
- 22:42And once you have those conversations that at least
- 22:44gives those players the the ability to make the best
- 22:48decision for them. Whether it's It's, you know,
- 22:50sticking around and being a part of it or you know, seeing what
- 22:54they can do elsewhere. But let's let's put a little
- 22:57bit. Danny kick this one over to you.
- 23:00You spent the spring game in the booth of Might burn up and I
- 23:03assume you get a little time with the team that we can as
- 23:05well. What part of this team do?
- 23:07You hope has improved the most since you call that game back in
- 23:10April, Yeah, that's a, that's a great question, Brian.
- 23:16And that was a pretty incredible experience.
- 23:18Just sharing the booth with Mike burn up five.
- 23:21Everyone has asked about how that has been how it went and
- 23:25and just being alongside him. He's just an encyclopedia
- 23:28Virginia Tech knowledge, whether it's football or any other
- 23:32sport, especially football, know, that man is incredibly
- 23:35talented and we are very lucky to have him in Blacksburg but in
- 23:39the production meeting that we had before that game but the day
- 23:42before I we definitely I only got the chance to talk to Brent
- 23:46fry and there's there were a lot of takeaways from that sum over
- 23:50all things that I thought were interesting you know he's
- 23:53obviously a defensive guy that came over from Penn State and he
- 23:56believes that a strong defense in this conference will take you
- 24:00as far as that you need to go. You know you look at all the
- 24:03success that it seemed like Clemson is had recently and
- 24:05although they're incredibly talented on both sides of the
- 24:07ball they've been mostly predicated on playing defense
- 24:11with with the exception of DeShaun Watson.
- 24:14That's, you know, they've had a Litany of incredibly talented
- 24:18defensive players. So when you play on the coastal
- 24:21where it's even more wide open, it becomes even more important.
- 24:25I think to have a good defense and I think that is there you
- 24:29have him bringing in his scheme and his players will come as he
- 24:33gets to recruit. And there's obviously a palpable
- 24:37hype surrounding this Virginia Tech program that we haven't
- 24:40seen for a very long time that I think that's going to help them.
- 24:43But when it comes to the exact answer to your question, Brian,
- 24:47it kind of goes back to the theme of what we've all been
- 24:51talking about so far in this podcast and it said, they need
- 24:55some help on both the offensive and the defensive line has an
- 24:57improvement on both the offensive and the defensive
- 25:00line. What I remember most about that
- 25:02game is Jason Brown had absolutely no time to do
- 25:05anything. I mean he was running for his
- 25:08life every time he took a snap every time he took a snap I
- 25:12swear I don't remember a snap where he was Not under some sort
- 25:15of pressure and to me he wasn't going up or he didn't have the
- 25:19number one offensive line in front of him.
- 25:23So what that tells me is that they have some depth issues
- 25:25right there, but if you flip it over and look at what Grant
- 25:29Wells and you know everyone remembers the touchdown
- 25:32see-through over the top and those were impressive but you
- 25:36know, you'd like to see the defensive line, get some
- 25:38pressure there as well. So I'd like to see them, you
- 25:41know, in the trenches improve on both sides of the ball.
- 25:44And I think that they have the coaching staff to do that.
- 25:47And and the last thing that I'll say to is just an overall take
- 25:49away from from being among that staff for that spring game
- 25:53weekend is that Brent pry, is very Reliant right now on his
- 25:57offensive coordinator. Tyler Bowen to obviously run the
- 26:00offense and help get things set there, but you know, Brent is
- 26:04still figuring out how to, you know, the same way he sees
- 26:09defense as a defensive coordinator, he wants to see it
- 26:12on the offensive side of the ball, he To figure out how to
- 26:15make other defensive coordinators squirm and how to
- 26:18figure out how to use this Personnel that they had to their
- 26:22advantage. So they're the foundation of a
- 26:27lot of success that we've seen this Virginia Tech program have
- 26:31that. We're used to seeing where
- 26:32they're regularly competing for ACC championships.
- 26:34That Foundation is being built. The bricks are being laid right
- 26:37now. It's just going to be about
- 26:39staying healthy this season. Can you get consistent play on
- 26:43in the trenches? Both offense and defense side in
- 26:45line, and then, you know, over time can you get those recruits
- 26:48in? I love that you said it's the
- 26:52play of those two lines Danny because I think we have some
- 26:54good players that I think you look at Silas.
- 26:57You look at Johnny, Jordan. You look at, you know, more on
- 27:00the right side of the Guard there.
- 27:02You look at some of the guys on the we have good players, it's
- 27:04just nothing behind it. So that health is important
- 27:07because if you tell me and this thing going to happen for the
- 27:10guys that played in Here collegiately brine, Ian, the
- 27:14white specifically point out the y'all, y'all know, playing the
- 27:17line and playing against it. Blind people are gonna get hurt
- 27:21whether it's a Nick in your out a couple weeks, you miss a
- 27:24practice and God forbid, you know, a guy out 6-8 weeks where
- 27:28it's that happens, that's going to be, you know, catastrophe or
- 27:32a catastrophic for this team. So, you know, I hope we can
- 27:37avoid that because I think we've got good enough players to
- 27:39compete with everybody on the schedule this year.
- 27:42The are I'll piggyback on that just real quick before I let you
- 27:45get into the next one. But I'll just say and I know, I
- 27:48know Johnny talked about a little bit earlier.
- 27:49Earlier, but I think that we're struggling depth wise, but I
- 27:54feel like with with some of these new coaches particularly
- 27:56Rudolph route since we're talking in the trenches, I feel
- 27:59like our Baseline is at least raised a little bit because you
- 28:02are going to have a little bit better foundation and those guys
- 28:07that are further down the depth chart to maybe lean back on.
- 28:10So yeah you might not have guys with a lot of experience guys
- 28:14with this, that the third, but you will have guys that are for
- 28:17their youth and inexperience are still More prepared probably at
- 28:21Baseline than what we've seen recently you know, and also to
- 28:24and also to man you don't get experience.
- 28:26You get experience by playing and then on top of it if you get
- 28:29to the last three years one of the biggest issues with
- 28:32offensive line. Wasn't you have some yes really
- 28:35great players individually but many times in game situations
- 28:40short, yardage critical plays Red Zone.
- 28:43You had a lot of illegal man, downfield, priests and
- 28:46penalties. Lack of focus.
- 28:48I think we're Rudolph. They're like, When Grounds was
- 28:50there with John and guys, like JB G to coach me, you're going
- 28:55to have guys in too deep. They go know what they're going
- 28:57to do. I think many times in previous
- 29:00Seasons, our offense was not coach where when it came to the
- 29:03trenches. There was a lot of mistakes made
- 29:05in RPO situations. And guys, did not know what they
- 29:08were doing. Like if a guy went out another
- 29:11guy came in and just did not know.
- 29:13It wasn't even about physical play, it was like lack of
- 29:15understanding scheme and concept.
- 29:19Yeah I agree with that. I think as you said Rudolph's
- 29:21going to help help raise that Baseline.
- 29:23So that's going to definitely help Downstream even if you
- 29:26don't have again that game experience in aren't necessarily
- 29:30the most highly rated guy. You're on that side of the ball
- 29:34Curtis I'ma let you kick the next move over to Mike.
- 29:36Oh yeah so mining Daniel you're constantly talking Hokies.
- 29:41I mean everywhere probably in your hometown as much as you do
- 29:45with podcast but if all these things you are in your industry.
- 29:49Three fill in the blank on this. And I'm almost going to
- 29:53piggyback and say, you can't say quarterback because that ain't
- 29:56fair. But I'll, but I'll but I, but I
- 29:58won't. I won't hold it against you.
- 29:59If blank has a great season, the hook you will exceed X, the
- 30:04Hokies will exceed expectations in 2022.
- 30:07I mean it's the obvious answer it is quarterback.
- 30:10It is a ramp what Virginia Tech has not had a stable quarterback
- 30:20room in years. Like you got your rotten 2016
- 30:24went really well. You had basically a full year of
- 30:27Josh Jackson and then he gets hurt in 2018 and since then it
- 30:30has been chaos, the wrong quarterback start of the 2019
- 30:34season. Then by the time you handed over
- 30:35the hooker, he wins, whatever was six 07:07 out of 80 had 13
- 30:39touchdowns to two, picks threw for over 1,500 yards, and then
- 30:4320 and his staff. Make him compete for the
- 30:45starting quarterback job again in 2020.
- 30:49That didn't make any sense, right?
- 30:51And The rumors were that if you know Burmeister didn't break his
- 30:57foot, you know, later in the season didn't have covid, you
- 31:01know, he might have had more of a hand early in the year and
- 31:04starting quarterback job like that should never have happened.
- 31:07You see what hookers doing now at Tennessee.
- 31:10Obviously he would never have done that at Virginia Tech
- 31:12because he wasn't getting the coaching days.
- 31:14Now being at Tennessee with High people and the way that he
- 31:16Grooms quarterbacks, it just was not getting that in Blacksburg.
- 31:20But yeah, it is the quarterback position we Wells because
- 31:23Virginia Tech hasn't had stability at that position in a
- 31:26long time. It's obvious like when the
- 31:29offense really started to drop off really started to Creator
- 31:32under Fuente and Cornell said, it's when they stop developing
- 31:36quarterbacks. After Josh Jackson, it was kind
- 31:39of a disaster short of that six or seven game stretch of Hendon
- 31:42hooker. So it's got to be Wells.
- 31:44Tyler Bowen has got to get him comfortable early on the one
- 31:49difference, I think between what prize What Fuente is inheriting
- 31:54is that prize got his work, cut out for him a lot more than 20
- 31:59did. There was still a lot of Talent
- 32:01on that 2016 roster and not to say that their brother John on
- 32:06this protein attack roster. But it is not.
- 32:08It is not the same in 2022. That was in 2016.
- 32:11When point I took over, I think we can all acknowledge that.
- 32:15Yeah it's crazy to see that you know, one point, we had three
- 32:20former four star quarterbacks on this roster and couldn't seem to
- 32:26figure out what to do with any of them.
- 32:30It's the ineptitude that that created.
- 32:34I feel like this was the downfall and I mean, you can
- 32:36point fingers, if when taking four fingers at corn and
- 32:39truthfully, the The fault lies with both of them in some ways
- 32:44because, you know, at some point, if something's not
- 32:46working, you gotta, you gotta move on and do something
- 32:48different. You can't just come in, they had
- 32:50to go there to go, get a quarterback from Kansas because
- 32:53it couldn't figure out which four star that was already there
- 32:55to start with. I mean, it was a disaster.
- 32:58So, and Willis Willis had his moments, but it was pretty clear
- 33:02how the offense was clicking. When hooker came into that Miami
- 33:05game. There was there was a clear
- 33:07difference in the offense and instead of kind of riding with
- 33:09that one tank or Nelson going in, 20/20 kind of messed around
- 33:13with it, and it should never have happened. 100% on that
- 33:18should have been an inside job from Jump Street because of what
- 33:21he had done at the end of the year and even the two losses
- 33:24that he had legitimately where the best game of quarterbacks
- 33:28ever had at UVA and then that bowl game.
- 33:32Well we all know how that bowl game when because that was some
- 33:35wild shit beforehand, that I was the best that was the best game
- 33:39of quarterback had a Kentucky. Apparently that day.
- 33:41Yeah, that's running. Running quarterbacks all the
- 33:47time and but you know, I knew you were going to say
- 33:50quarterback. I knew you were but I think it's
- 33:56I think someone like Malachi Thomas.
- 34:00All right, if you tell me Malachi Thomas breaks, a
- 34:02thousand yards this year, I think that means overall a few
- 34:06things. A, the offensive line stay
- 34:08healthy. That meant probably Grant
- 34:10played. Well I think you could choose a
- 34:12few different people but if you tell me Grant Wells goes out and
- 34:15you know, Please good. Yeah, but you know, I'm always
- 34:21one of these challenges like is there anybody else?
- 34:23You want to talk about this because quarterbacks always
- 34:26answer if you've got an elite quarterback, a 6-1 team can
- 34:30become a nine or ten. One team in a cornerback
- 34:32definitely sloughs it out. I mean it has Grayson, just
- 34:35brought up, you know, Lynn Bowden there.
- 34:36I mean that that's a team that yeah.
- 34:39Good on the defensive side of the ball but the offense was
- 34:42pretty much run and Bowden and nothing else at that point.
- 34:45But what I saw Thought I saw David Hill posted a like if
- 34:49bramwell's just continues to production that he had his first
- 34:51couple of years at Marshall that he would have the best
- 34:53production at the quarterback position, Virginia Tech in like
- 34:56two decades. So why don't we just do that?
- 34:58Yeah, I'll take I'll be especially if we if we can keep
- 35:01interceptions to 10 or under. Oh yeah let's roll with it.
- 35:06Roll with it. I'm going to kick it over to
- 35:08Grace in here. You recently got to sit down
- 35:10with the man himself Brent pry and he said, you know, he said
- 35:13he's gonna be calling the defense On this fall at least
- 35:19through 2022 will see if that continues going forward.
- 35:23But what has you more excited? This year prize attacking Bud,
- 35:28Foster inspired defense or Bowen Smash Mouth spread offense.
- 35:34Well first I'll say this, I'm excited about the defense
- 35:37because a pride will be calling it and we just have so much
- 35:40experience on the defense you have to bail cows in fifth year,
- 35:45seniors Dax hollifield and shh. Sorry Connor.
- 35:48So I mean they're going to know what's going on.
- 35:50They're going to be flying around out there.
- 35:52A lot of experience across the board, but I mean, it's got to
- 35:56be the offense. I mean we've been through at the
- 35:58last five years, young women are like, it's insane.
- 36:02So I mean, you know, David Cunningham, he talked about, is
- 36:05it going to be Grant? Well, this is going to be Jason
- 36:07Brown. Are we going to see Connor,
- 36:09blumberg taking some reps. He's still listed as a QB on the
- 36:12depth chart also an athlete Sue so I don't know, but I You with
- 36:17David, I think it's going to be Grant Wells, you know, I think
- 36:21you all would agree with this sentiment.
- 36:23If the offense isn't contributing to us winning
- 36:26football games, I don't care what kind of numbers.
- 36:29They're putting up the previous regime put up numbers and that
- 36:33became a scapegoat there at the end, but they didn't put up a
- 36:37lot of Victories and that's at the end of the day, that's what
- 36:40matters, you know. I think I'm really excited about
- 36:44Caleb Smith. He's the Bell cow on The
- 36:47offense, he is the guy. You see it in all the videos,
- 36:49like, on social media and everything.
- 36:52He's the leader. He's the guy that the younger
- 36:54guys look up to, I guess, I have to wonder like, who steps up.
- 36:59I think Duane Lofton is going to have a breakout season.
- 37:02I think Malachi Thomas can be dangerous.
- 37:05It'll be interesting to see how we incorporate Keshawn King
- 37:08again chance black Kenji. Christian two new guys on the
- 37:13Block and the running back room. I think another guy who has the
- 37:16Essential to have a breakout season is Nick Gallo at tight
- 37:20end. There's a lot of talk about him
- 37:22being very dangerous this season.
- 37:24Apparently, he's improved a lot in Camp.
- 37:28While we have some young guys on the offensive line.
- 37:30You have, Johnny, Jordan, you have stylist in Z and the locker
- 37:33room at the end, you know, I don't know, I don't know what to
- 37:38expect and that's why I'm excited about it.
- 37:40I have no expectations going into the season, so we'll see.
- 37:44Man. Let's go.
- 37:45I'm rooting for Tyler. Bowen can't be worse than what
- 37:48we had please. I'm with you because I feel like
- 37:51we you know we somewhat know like prize a known quantity,
- 37:55we've seen a lot of tape from Penn State stuff from
- 37:59Vanderbilt, he's the head guy, he's calling the defense still.
- 38:03So we've got a little bit more of a point of focus where we can
- 38:06look back and bring some tangible things out.
- 38:09But there's a lot of things that we can't really quantify with
- 38:12Boeing yet and I think that not knowing that also Kind of feeds
- 38:17that excitement. Right?
- 38:18So I feel like the offense, you know, aside from all the other
- 38:21things with how the offense has been a roller coaster the last
- 38:26six years, just that kind of unknown factor to a point of
- 38:30what we're going to get with this offense and I'm looking
- 38:32forward to that and Dwight, you got some things to say about
- 38:36leadership. Go ahead and You know, know when
- 38:43our Grayson was talking to just took me back to when I heard
- 38:47Caleb on Don Visa podcast and I don t Fridays and it was really
- 38:53refreshing and inside the noodle.
- 38:55TTP Sergeant EP muffled. I apologize shutout to tell him
- 38:59but it was really, really insightful because it was stuff.
- 39:04I knew like just being a former player, you could just tell,
- 39:07like, it was, it was just one of those things where he was
- 39:09speaking with conviction. But he was also provide Insight
- 39:11because Cuz even though Grayson is hundreds in, right?
- 39:14The offense put up numbers. They hear that they couldn't do.
- 39:18They couldn't get extra work in when the when the field was
- 39:21closed and and not being able to watch film after practice stuff
- 39:25that I did back in the late 90s, you know, like just and also to
- 39:30the leadership like, that's, I agree.
- 39:32I agree with Grayson like race and talking about like,
- 39:35leadership with him. I think that's another thing
- 39:37that we've been missing, which I feel like is there this year.
- 39:41Well, you have Stabs leaders. I think if you look at any
- 39:43Virginia Tech Vicki, so ACC Championship team, we even teams
- 39:47that won, eight nine, ten games, there were established leaders
- 39:50on the team, you can see it. When you watch the game on
- 39:52television, you saw guys talking even guys, like the answer Hall
- 39:57when he, you know, called out Miami in 2003 when they had 130
- 40:00something plus games and he said, I think we're better.
- 40:02I don't think Miami is all that he took a stand.
- 40:05I don't think you really had a lot of leaders in recent years,
- 40:09and I think that was more so because of the culture in
- 40:10Blacksburg because I Really think anyone felt comfortable
- 40:14taking that kind of stand and that they did it became
- 40:17divisive, what a team wasn't close and I just I think Grayson
- 40:20is 107 spot-on with Smith being one of the established leaders
- 40:23and I think those kind of things the one of those characteristics
- 40:26you look back on the season. When they went regardless of
- 40:29what they win, if they have a good season, you say oh yeah
- 40:32they had this player. He was really good but he was
- 40:34also a leader and, you know, and I just think that was a, that
- 40:37was a great Point by Grayson. Yeah, if I may, but in here, you
- 40:43know, speaking with Caleb Smith down in Charlotte ACC kickoff
- 40:46was, was really eye-opening and this was all stuff.
- 40:51Caleb, kind of just let loose kind of the same stuff he said
- 40:53on the podcast. He told me about how you know
- 40:58his former position coach told them at the end of the season in
- 41:03December last year, he suggested that he transferred to an FCS
- 41:06school or division to school like that's you know, The
- 41:10culture I'll eat, especially on the offensive side of the ball,
- 41:14just didn't seem to be there, you know?
- 41:17He he told me that he and Braxton Burmeister had plenty
- 41:22locker room conversations. Plenty hard to you know, many
- 41:24heart-to-hearts where they were both just like, it's not in our
- 41:28hands, there's nothing we can do about it and I know you Caleb's,
- 41:32a guy who's a former walk-on, you know, he's been in the
- 41:35program for a long time. He had to earn his keep so to
- 41:38speak, you got Silas Gene. Hands and Johnny Jordan even
- 41:42he's a transfer but he's played college football for a really
- 41:45long time. Don't need that's not even, you
- 41:48know, without mentioning Drake Julius and McDowell at tight end
- 41:51to fifth or sixth year guys. There are a lot of veterans in
- 41:56this room and I think from my understanding, especially on the
- 42:01offensive side of the ball, got a little bit out of hand where
- 42:05guys didn't necessarily have an opportunity to kind of be
- 42:08themself. And A leader and step up.
- 42:11It was more, I don't know if drill sergeant style is the way
- 42:16to describe it, but kind of hey, you're going to do this and if
- 42:19you don't do this, you're you're getting punished and you know,
- 42:22coaches can kind of lead their programs, you know, in various
- 42:27Styles but it clearly did not work out, you know, especially
- 42:31in the latter stages. So to talk with Caleb Smith to
- 42:34talk with Silas jeans, even decks.
- 42:36I've y'all on the defense side of the ball and to get a sense
- 42:38of, you know, I think it was Silas who told me that he's
- 42:43having fun, they're enjoying practice.
- 42:46They can be themself, they don't, you know, Caleb Smith
- 42:50told me that he because he got the unsportsmanlike conduct
- 42:53penalty for excessive celebration in the spring game
- 42:56out. If you guys remember that and he
- 42:58told me, he told me that a kind of just all came out because the
- 43:02old staff didn't let him celebrate.
- 43:04If they scored during practice, just just simple things where,
- 43:08you know, they can Now, be themself and leaders can kind of
- 43:13emerge naturally if that makes sense, that makes 100, that
- 43:18makes 100% sense. Because in the situations like
- 43:22this, the coordinators and everything or they're right, the
- 43:26guys are played they're there and they're supposed to help you
- 43:28learn to lead and eventually the range of to be taken to White.
- 43:32You were a Captain John, you guys played your crucial part of
- 43:35an offensive line. You've got to have those leaders
- 43:39in the locker room. You've got to have the guys that
- 43:41take the reins right in from the way.
- 43:43Everything is sounding what we've been hearing the last few
- 43:46weeks special on the offensive side of the ball.
- 43:48Nobody wanted to take the range for fear and you can't play
- 43:52football that way. But you can't like you can't
- 43:55play football. I'm I don't want to, I don't
- 43:57want to celebrate and, you know, run laps.
- 44:00You know that's that's something.
- 44:02You know, it's like doing something at work is like man.
- 44:05I'm not getting on that project. Getting because it's a craft
- 44:08project. I want to get in trouble.
- 44:10Well I'll say this to you can be a hard Old Coach and not you
- 44:13know, has silent lunches and banned people from the
- 44:16facilities During certain hours and all this other stuff.
- 44:19I mean you can be a hard coach. You can push your players you
- 44:24know sometimes beyond the limits that they think they can reach
- 44:27but but still, you know, not be ridiculous with the things that
- 44:33you're putting in place because I don't think anyone's
- 44:35benefiting from not Some more film, no ones benefiting from
- 44:39not creating camaraderie during meals with their teammates, like
- 44:43that, that type of stuff is not not building the team and
- 44:46building the culture that you want for to win.
- 44:49So that's just my two cents on it, and it's sad that it seems
- 44:53like that kind of defeatist attitude, like really fed into
- 44:56the offense, especially as the year went on last year's, but a
- 45:01B&B. I said that I said that on my
- 45:04show when Danny and I one time, when Dorian, Strong got the
- 45:08interception on the Friday night game against BC.
- 45:10He got it was a key drive, a key stop early in the first quarter,
- 45:14anytime a defensive back at Virginia Tech since even before
- 45:17the bema are got a pic he was trying to take it to the house.
- 45:20Dorian looked to the sideline for certainty.
- 45:25He didn't know. He looked for advice, he looked
- 45:27and he kind of stumbled. And he got hit, he fumbled the
- 45:30ball, subsequently BC, got the ball back and scored.
- 45:33That's what I mean about culture, and being assertive and
- 45:36knowing what You can and cannot do you know, Rio Whitaker,
- 45:39Brandon Flowers, garnell Wiles DeAngelo, Hall, Kam Chancellor,
- 45:44so on and so on they didn't have to do that.
- 45:46They had 20 in Gray and all those defense the guys coach
- 45:50Foster coach towards they gave him the green light to make
- 45:52plays. And again, I mean, I just think
- 45:56that's why I go back to the culture.
- 45:57We have established right now and we're not even really in the
- 45:59midst of the yet, we still scratching the surface.
- 46:03I think about blacks, you're trying to push the pile instead
- 46:05of reaching out for the goal line to for fear of, you know,
- 46:10getting punished for a fumble or something like that.
- 46:12Just trying to make a play. Hey look, bro, I'm telling
- 46:15y'all, look ya'll missing. I'm a which one of y'all said
- 46:16the Kentucky game. We lost them in a bowl game when
- 46:19the quarterback and on him was running up on this and hit dude.
- 46:22Stole one of my players in the face.
- 46:23I'm telling you right now look I got a beamer would have he knew
- 46:29what was up? There was stuff that happened.
- 46:31I can speak on Now when the wrestling team tried us and he
- 46:36talked to the team, he said, look, make sure y'all do it just
- 46:39don't do it here. You know I'm saying?
- 46:45Take it out of the facility but do what you need to do?
- 46:47I don't like the players when that happened because I wanted
- 46:51to retaliate, but I knew it was one of them things where they
- 46:55just couldn't be themselves. It was like, you know, you
- 46:59couldn't be a man, you couldn't defend yourself, it was crazy.
- 47:03You know. All right, so first of all, this
- 47:08little sections, we've rolled we rode off on 50 minutes here.
- 47:12I love it. We got a lot more to come, but
- 47:14before we take our break, won't ask you fellas.
- 47:17This question, come back to Egypt you.
- 47:20What three games are the most important to the Hokies this
- 47:24season? Don't think on that before we
- 47:28get our panels answers to that tonight, we are going to take a
- 47:31quick pause with a message from our digital partners.
- 47:34Yes. Because we take a quick break,
- 47:36we'd like to tell you about getting your free website report
- 47:39from our digital partner, Grassroots, digital marketing

- 47:43website ranks on Google on-site, SEO and social media.

- 47:49visiting. Grassroots digital studio.com
- 47:52forward slash free Dash website, Dash report.
- 47:55Now back to the episode All right, so before we get y'all's
- 48:02answers me and Brian are going to give hours just so we can
- 48:05have a jumping off point mr. Siegel, oh, I let you leave sir.
- 48:09All right, three most important gains for the Hokies in 2022,
- 48:14UVA, Boston, College, UNC. I say that for a couple reasons.
- 48:20Number one, I feel like looking at our schedule, those are games
- 48:24that we can when we had the potential to win.
- 48:28UVA obviously rival. You want to take care of
- 48:31business there? I think they've got
- 48:34significantly better at least from a talent standpoint offense
- 48:38than we do but their defense is still garbage.
- 48:42I think I think we still got to a chance to get one there.
- 48:46You know, Boston College has some talent in places but they
- 48:49lost a lot on the offensive line.
- 48:50I think they're still vulnerable and in some areas and UNC still
- 48:54has to show me that they're more than just a good recruiting
- 48:57class. So until they do that, I'm not
- 49:00sold on them either. So I feel like those are three
- 49:03games that were probably not favored in but games that are
- 49:06winnable on our schedule and that's going to be the
- 49:08difference between whether we're, you know, sub 500 or
- 49:13looking at a potentially a twin season.
- 49:15So that's kind of where we're. I feel like our most important
- 49:18there and it's always important to win your conference games and
- 49:21take care of business against recruiting Rivals.
- 49:23We lost a couple recruiting battles lately to BC we
- 49:26obviously recruit directly against UVA.
- 49:28Jay and UNC has been across our border way too damn much.
- 49:32So that's about three. Alright, moan jump online real
- 49:36quick because I got two of them in agreement with them.
- 49:38Once for a different reason. Uva's one obviously the momentum
- 49:43we're getting in here. Recruiting one in the state
- 49:45wise. You want to keep that you wanted
- 49:47to keep them an afterthought to the recruits.
- 49:52I grew Braun on BC but for a different reason that is going
- 49:55to be the first home game under the brim prior as going to be a
- 49:598:00 at night game in Lane it's gonna be on the SEC network
- 50:03unfortunately. So you're not going to get
- 50:06you're not going to get all the viewers fertile time, boys,
- 50:09fertile Jesus. But but think about this, you go
- 50:12into that game. The atmosphere is going to be
- 50:14electric. I know some of you guys will be
- 50:17there. Me and Brian have talked about
- 50:20it. Going potentially and driving
- 50:23back. I don't know about that will see
- 50:25as the time comes but you can you imagine you have the
- 50:28electric atmosphere and you beat them?
- 50:31Think about the height, Think About Kids on Campus that week,
- 50:34my last is going to be the Miami game after the send them, not
- 50:38for the sentimental reasons that we're not going to be playing
- 50:40them every other year, which I think we all are a little bit
- 50:43angry about especially mr. Vic up there in my in the
- 50:46corner. But but for this Miami with
- 50:51crystal ball. They are getting tons of height
- 50:55on the crew. Team Trail, getting the top 20
- 50:57ranking, they got to come to the Lane regardless.
- 51:01What happens in that game, if we beat them, wonderful, I profiles
- 51:05raised if we compete with them with all their talent, I
- 51:09profiles raised. So that's my three Grayson.
- 51:15Since you were at the back end, we're going to let you go.
- 51:17What are your big three games for the He's in 2022.
- 51:22Absolutely, I yeah I'm with you Curtis.
- 51:25I'll won't say Miami because you said it or stuff Boston College.
- 51:32I mean, first game of the prior era 8:00, it's going to be
- 51:36packed to the gills. Probably be sold out.
- 51:39You know, I hopefully AC C digital networking.
- 51:42Get some high definition cameras capture, Enter Sandman because
- 51:45they did a terrible job, see game and that game out of my A3.
- 51:51I think is the most winnable. Definitely is probably the most
- 51:54winnable number two, two weeks later West Virginia.
- 51:58I mean that I think is the most important game on our schedule.
- 52:02Okay, let's Virginia. Thursday night, Hardware game,
- 52:05Black, Diamond way. It ended last year I'm was an
- 52:09Abomination and just I mean so many head scratch moments in
- 52:15that game. Got to get that trophy back
- 52:18Blacksburg is going to be insane.
- 52:20And then I'm going to say NC State NC State.
- 52:24Yeah, I'm going to say NC State. It's been a while since we play
- 52:28down there in Raleigh and they're supposed to be
- 52:31relatively good this season. Obviously, you know, if we can
- 52:35beat Miami great. But if we can go down there and
- 52:39beat NC State beat the pack, that's going to be a huge deal,
- 52:42especially in Brent prized first season.
- 52:46I like that. I like that.
- 52:47Yeah, you know, that's definitely a statement game if
- 52:50you can go out and win that one because they are in a lot of
- 52:54ways, you know, some people are having them as the favorite to
- 52:57win the ACC this year. You know.
- 52:59That's a lot of that's going to depend on whether Clemson can
- 53:02put Cobble together, more offensive consistency or not
- 53:05this year, but they definitely return a lot especially on that
- 53:09defense. So that's going to be interested
- 53:11in the sea. Let's kick it over to Mike next.
- 53:15What's your three? Yeah, my three.
- 53:19I mean, I think you guys are with the home opener against PC
- 53:22except sets the tone. I mean, the Old Dominion game
- 53:25sets the tone, it's a road game, you got to win that game because
- 53:28they're ODU, and you can't do what point they did in 2017.
- 53:32And that's game that skate literally game 14 pry.
- 53:35But you gotta not only look competitive against what I
- 53:39think, will be a pretty decent Boston College team, but if you
- 53:41can win that home opener, it sets the tone for the entire
- 53:43regime, right, gets you off to the right start at home.
- 53:46I think that's really important in front of your fans.
- 53:49The second one for me is NC State coming off a bye week.
- 53:52I think is really significant, so NC State I think going to
- 53:54have a really really good team. This year Devon Larry's coming
- 53:57back and they should have one of the top two or three defense and
- 54:00Conference and you get to see what kind of what kind of staff
- 54:04is going to be coming off. A bye in advance scouting,
- 54:07right? Because you have two weeks to
- 54:08prepare for one of the best games on your schedule, it's
- 54:12coming off of the Miami game as well, which I think is the third
- 54:15most important game on the schedule.
- 54:18It's a really important three-week.
- 54:20Stretch their the Miami game the bye week and NC State.
- 54:23Because if Virginia Tech is going to lose to Miami like
- 54:27let's say, you lose that game which I you know, I think role
- 54:30we can all live in, Miami will be favored there in Virginia
- 54:33Tech loses that game and then goes into a bye week.
- 54:35How do you respond to adversity? Right coming off of one of the
- 54:38bigger games on your schedule, rivalry type game.
- 54:41How do you respond to adversity, right?
- 54:43And going into a bye week and coming out of it, playing a
- 54:46really good NC State team that Had the historical stature in
- 54:51terms of like the history behind them, right?
- 54:54To the West Virginia does in Miami, does it UVA does but
- 54:57playing with the Bear Team to your scheduled coming off a bye
- 54:59week. That's a really important game
- 55:02but I think if your bread pry, you're looking at three most
- 55:04important games on the schedule, you know, thinking back to when
- 55:06he was a graduate assistant way back in the day, it's West
- 55:09Virginia. It's Miami, it's UVA.
- 55:11Like those are the three, most important games.
- 55:12So he's going to try to have the same competitive and all three
- 55:15of those and I think have a successful year one, he's going
- 55:18Have to steal one of those, right?
- 55:21We point to West Virginia, it's at home, it's Thursday, night.
- 55:24West Virginia are in this weird state would Neal Brown.
- 55:27We're like, I'm not sure how good they're going to be.
- 55:29I'm not sure if that's even going to work out with Neil
- 55:32Brown. Text should have beaten them
- 55:34last year, great, like in Morgantown if it weren't for.
- 55:38I mean they were gifted and interception and then the goal
- 55:40line. Play-calling was unwilling to be
- 55:44a shit. You got the guys were left on
- 55:49the roster who were there for last year's game and they got to
- 55:52try to bounce back and get a win there.
- 55:55So that is a game that circled that's a game.
- 55:58Everybody's got circles, 12, B, huge home game.
- 56:01It's one of the early home games on the schedule.
- 56:03You got to try to win that one. I want to hear Danny Novak's
- 56:06opinion next. Well, I like I like where we're
- 56:12going with this gentleman. I think we're going to be all on
- 56:14a very similar page when it comes to the three biggest games
- 56:17here. Because to me, that's it's very
- 56:19simple and it starts with West Virginia.
- 56:21I loved what Grayson said about that West Virginia game being
- 56:24the biggest game on the schedule.
- 56:25This year, I completely agree with that and it has a lot to do
- 56:29with what happened last year. In the, several cracks, they had
- 56:32inside the 5-yard line with the the game on the line.
- 56:34You have the ball close to punching it in and can't do it.
- 56:37That has absolutely a lot to do with It.
- 56:40But with conference realignment on the horizon and us not
- 56:44knowing whether Virginia Tech is going to end up in the Big Ten.
- 56:47The SEC a reformed ACC will UVA still be their West Virginia be
- 56:52coming over, what we be going to a conference.
- 56:54That includes West Virginia. It's a it's a dormant rivalry
- 56:58that is just it needs to come back and Virginia Tech is in a
- 57:03spot here where they definitely need to go and win that.
- 57:05Football game coming up what happened last year.
- 57:07So I start with West Virginia. I say I move Over to North
- 57:11Carolina after that. Because I don't think they'll
- 57:13beat Miami and I don't think they'll be NC State.
- 57:16I hope that they will. And I hope that as Mike was
- 57:19saying they come out of the bye week prepared to compete against
- 57:22one of the better teams in the conference and potentially one
- 57:25of the better teams in the country.
- 57:26I'm just looking at this more of a from a position of games that
- 57:31I think they're better position to go and win.
- 57:34And I think that would be North Carolina versus an NC State at
- 57:37Miami. So I'll take the Tar Heels.
- 57:39I think they have Have another chance to get a solid win
- 57:42against a long time. ACC Coastal photo there and then
- 57:46at the end of the season, I think UVA is always going to be
- 57:48there. It's always going to be the most
- 57:50important, get one of. If not the most important game
- 57:53on your schedule and with them returning, Brandon Armstrong,
- 57:56you know, they're going to be, they're going to be a
- 57:57competitive team this year, despite the fact that they're
- 57:59also bringing in a brand new head coach with, with Tony
- 58:03Elliot. So it's pretty simple.
- 58:05West Virginia UNC and UVA, it's a pretty classic lineup.
- 58:11That's funny daddy. Uh that was actually my
- 58:13original. I talked myself into putting BC
- 58:15in there instead of West Virginia so I got no qualms with
- 58:18that 3 Vito. What's your 3?
- 58:22My three going to be different to everybody else's because I
- 58:25think a little different Wofford and listen to me, we bout to put
- 58:3150 of them hoes on walk with Barbara, the most important game
- 58:34on the season. When today's teens, I don't want
- 58:37to make this shit about fun to the whole time swint.
- 58:40A said the team wasn't built to blow out Richmond teams like
- 58:45Middle Tennessee, State teams, like may know, not mean the
- 58:49Rhode Island coming up. Up in the Burgh feeling
- 58:52comfortable, right? I want them to make an example
- 58:56out of offer, bro. I won't fit them hoes.
- 58:58At least I want to see the third stringers in.
- 59:01I want to see Walk-Ons in that game snowcat, bro.
- 59:04I'm tired of seeing wild for these FCS schools, coming in and
- 59:10laying feeling comfortable, bro. That I'm a know everything.
- 59:13I need to know why offered game for real for real next game.
- 59:17Liberty the fuck? Losing the Liberty?
- 59:21No bro, no, Malik Williams gone. We should we should have beat
- 59:26them by 50 with Millie Willis, its Liberty.
- 59:29That's keep it. A buck man.
- 59:31Liberty came in came in the bird, comfortable kick my feet
- 59:34up. Shout Out J, Hamm.
- 59:36That was some dumb shit. You did, bro, but we shouldn't
- 59:39even have been in that position. No Liberty game.
- 59:42Two most important game of the season and then game three NC
- 59:46State because, um, I think if NC State got a number beside their
- 59:51name the boys are wake up and playing them what they NC State
- 59:54they ain't known for doing shit for real none.
- 59:58So let's say n c-- State don't got a number by their name we
- 1:00:01might bullshit 11 to again. Flake so while for Liberty NC
- 1:00:07State was no ranking beside their name most important games
- 1:00:10this season. There we go.
- 1:00:12I like it. I like it.
- 1:00:13I like the way you want us to get back to just stomping on
- 1:00:16some throats. Being somebody's ass.
- 1:00:19If you come in here and you're not, you're not, you're not with
- 1:00:23it. We need to, we need to go ahead
- 1:00:24and just hang half, a hundred on you and put you back on the bus.
- 1:00:29Love it, love it. I John, you got to follow that
- 1:00:32up, man. But I think you can do it.
- 1:00:36Yeah. So I'm going to change my person
- 1:00:37but Imma keep it 100. Do you set the tone for me?
- 1:00:41That's the first game of the season.
- 1:00:45That's the first game of the season.
- 1:01:28Proud of what we are trying to get back and we, you this you
- 1:01:31did. They bring all their former
- 1:01:32players bag all this stuff. So I'm excited about the
- 1:01:35robbery. I'm ready to have this robbery
- 1:01:37back because I have to UVA, is to me, Miami is second.
- 1:01:40I feel like that's a lot of former players to the, we came
- 1:01:43in hate Miami, because they think they better not always
- 1:01:46thought they were better know. So, that's a big one for me, new
- 1:01:49coaches, you know, trying to get that Foundation back.
- 1:01:52And then obviously UVA, we got to be UVA, new coach, but yeah,
- 1:01:57that's, that's my free. Right on?
- 1:02:01I love that. What I'm hearing.
- 1:02:02Last two guys is we want to see what we were.
- 1:02:06If you are the Lesser opponent, don't play Down, smash them.
- 1:02:10I loved on these Point, bring the Walk-Ons.
- 1:02:13It's 56, nothing. See if the walk-on can get to 60
- 1:02:16Burger, all right, David Cunningham.
- 1:02:19You have to file a both of them up so you have the floor sir?
- 1:02:22Yeah it's going to be tough. Know my my first thing is Old
- 1:02:26Dominion right off the bat man. Like you know, you guys Guys
- 1:02:30might remember my, my, my famous unsportsmanlike conduct picture
- 1:02:34from. Oh, yeah.
- 1:02:35Well, the meaning game in 2018, that's probably the best thing
- 1:02:37that came out of that game, to be honest.
- 1:02:41This is a program that last time you were in Norfolk, you got
- 1:02:43completely embarrassed, Virginia Tech going to Old Dominion.
- 1:02:49Like Jonathan said, you know, the in-state games on the road
- 1:02:53at Liberty at Old Dominion. Those are games that the fan
- 1:02:58base doesn't really enjoy. You know, you those I think the
- 1:03:02majority of the fan base would agree you need to play those
- 1:03:04games at home but but Old Dominion.
- 1:03:09This is a an opponent Ricky Ronnie's the head coach.
- 1:03:14Brent pry. You know was a defensive
- 1:03:16coordinator at Penn State when Ricky Ronnie was the offensive
- 1:03:18coordinator. The staffs are going to know
- 1:03:21each other a lot. You know, a lot of Penn State
- 1:03:23blood and between, but I think just in general you're not
- 1:03:26playing at home, you're opening up against a much.
- 1:03:30Your opponent but that should matter it should be.
- 1:03:34This is a game that establishes the culture for the many years
- 1:03:38to come in the program and kind of wood what Don and John both
- 1:03:42said, you know, against the delawares, the Rhode Island's,
- 1:03:46the furman's, the richman's, the Liberties Virginia Tech in the
- 1:03:51Justin Fuente era never once except for maybe that Delaware
- 1:03:55game in 2016 blue. Any of those guys out, they were
- 1:03:58always close games. It took maybe was up by a
- 1:04:02touchdown against Rhode Island a half-time in 2019 you know those
- 1:04:06are games where you need to get guys development especially now
- 1:04:09that guys can play in four games and also red shirt in the same
- 1:04:13year, you need to get those guys in the games when he can Old
- 1:04:17Dominion, you got to start off strong.
- 1:04:19My second game is West Virginia. I think this is the Boston
- 1:04:24College game is going to be exciting, but but West Virginian
- 1:04:26means more. I'm sure Brent prai is going to
- 1:04:30Guys, juice. Ready to go on a Thursday night,
- 1:04:33it's going to be what 20, it's going to be 20 something years
- 1:04:38to the day that Virginia. Virginia Tech first played on a
- 1:04:43Thursday night against West Virginia.
- 1:04:45If I believe maybe that maybe that 20 years but it'll be the
- 1:04:48anniversary that your plan on Thursday night against West
- 1:04:51Virginia. That's what Virginia Tech was
- 1:04:53kind of born on and especially with the way everything ended
- 1:04:57the last year I think that that's really important and then
- 1:05:00I'm Gonna pick a game for my third.
- 1:05:02I think it might be the most important game.
- 1:05:03Nobody's picked yet and that's pit.
- 1:05:05Virginia Tech since since pit join the ACC in 2012, Virginia
- 1:05:12Tech is one and four at Pitt. It's no longer Heinz Field but I
- 1:05:17think the two best teams on the schedule this year and they are
- 1:05:20who I picked as a media member at ACC, meaning days to win a
- 1:05:24two divisions pit and NC State pit Returns the most Talent.
- 1:05:30I guess returning starters in the coastal.
- 1:05:33Miami might have the most talent in North Carolina might, but I
- 1:05:36got in our dues, you can develop guys and NC State.
- 1:05:40I picked NC State to win the conference.
- 1:05:42I just think NC State returns so many guys, but but NC State so
- 1:05:46late in the season I think if you're not going to know exactly
- 1:05:49what you're going to have, you know what if some guys get
- 1:05:52injured, you know, in that Miami game that game so late, I think
- 1:05:57it's important to set the tone on the road.
- 1:06:00Dat pizza place at Virginia Tech has only won once in recent
- 1:06:03memory and pit is a pit is a team that is going to be good.
- 1:06:10It's kind of a measuring stick game so to speak pit and NC
- 1:06:15State as well. That's kind of like the fourth
- 1:06:17fourth team on my list, you know?
- 1:06:19And those games where you are playing, good competition in
- 1:06:23this first year where Brent price hasn't necessarily got all
- 1:06:27his guys in the still kind of establishing the the culture
- 1:06:31building it layer by layer, you need to know what you have, and
- 1:06:35Old Dominion games going to be really good for the culture.
- 1:06:37You'll know the West Virginia game, you know, with with all
- 1:06:41the crazy people coming to town and then that pit game on the
- 1:06:44road, it's never easy place to win.
- 1:06:47I think the fan base will know a lot about this team after that,
- 1:06:51Pittsburgh game. When you got Miami, then you got
- 1:06:54to open week and then you got to go down to Raleigh.
- 1:06:58All right, first of all, the whites upset that I didn't go
- 1:07:01last because we cook all. But here's the thing to White,
- 1:07:04we know bring your right. No, no, I'm not even the same
- 1:07:12kind of responsive now but look at the end of the day, man, like
- 1:07:15there's no right? Or wrong answers, our opinions.
- 1:07:17But I agree with everybody said, you can't really go wrong with
- 1:07:19anything. I just say this like real quick,
- 1:07:22I played against the mind be ghosts, so I played against I
- 1:07:24was just watching. I got home from work early, they
- 1:07:27ran both Both Miami 3430 today. If you were home, they had the
- 1:07:30one under neighbor show, the other one.
- 1:07:32And I was part of that rivalry with Miami.
- 1:07:35I was part of the team that beat them for the first time.
- 1:07:37All those household names. I went against them.
- 1:07:40So I'm not part of this height train.
- 1:07:43I'm not going to make this Miami game, more than what it is.
- 1:07:45As far as old, crystal ball. They've always had better
- 1:07:48so-called talent, but that's because we don't get the same
- 1:07:52respect until we smack him in the face.
- 1:07:54So I we betray Louis. I beat it read.
- 1:07:57Everybody that can talk about. So I'm not about to see here on
- 1:08:01this show, insights Miami because of some dude named Steve
- 1:08:04with glasses. That runs 24/7 is telling me my
- 1:08:07name is got a great class, y'all miss me with that.
- 1:08:10I've been, I've been in five years of battles with them.
- 1:08:12I'm not going, are they going to be good?
- 1:08:14Yeah, but I mean whatever bro so they're not on my list.
- 1:08:17I'm gonna tell you like this. I'ma tell you like oh, do you
- 1:08:20Liberty and Walford? That's just, I'm lumping them
- 1:08:22together. Like David and Jonathan said, I
- 1:08:25don't know how many times during the Fuente area.
- 1:08:27We were In scoring points in that first half, when it was
- 1:08:29scripted, or we had everything going our way when it was time
- 1:08:32to make adjustments or when adversity entered the stadium.
- 1:08:36We crumble after that, Greg Stroman Edmonds, brother era,
- 1:08:40and the ERA with Bucky and Isaiah Ford.
- 1:08:43And cams, and all those guys, when those guys left, we lost a
- 1:08:47lot of dogs. We lost McReynolds with all sit
- 1:08:49down and say Alexander's, we lost the Trayvon Hills.
- 1:08:51We didn't have any dogs consistently that when the game
- 1:08:54got tough, we crumble as dombey and Out there said too many
- 1:08:59teams like Liberty was real comfortable in Blacksburg.
- 1:09:02You know what I'm saying? How many times were you in the
- 1:09:04stadium you at home? And you went to the, you know,
- 1:09:07your during the old days you went to the bathroom.
- 1:09:10You already up 21. A blocked punt and a pick six.
- 1:09:13We were struggling with Richmond.
- 1:09:15Last year Richmond. I need to see us going to OD.
- 1:09:19I was my oldest daughter is going o to you.
- 1:09:21She's moving in in two weeks. She chose 0 to you, and I was
- 1:09:25down there for orientation. They feeling real good.
- 1:09:27Good about big nuts. I can tell you right now I'm
- 1:09:30from the 757 and old you. It's feeling real good about
- 1:09:33that game. So they're on my list.
- 1:09:36I combined them, while for the Liberty, the other game I got,
- 1:09:40it's a tie between you and Steve and UVA or getting.
- 1:09:44I got to be creative because I'm going last.
- 1:09:46And that's only because you recruit the same players and
- 1:09:48there's this misconception that UNC since Mack Brown's got near,
- 1:09:53they've been killing us and they haven't, you only beat this one
- 1:09:56time. You don't say, Even in that time
- 1:09:58we've had, we started from my sister and we waited to put in
- 1:10:02hinden hooker and he finally came in and we came back and it
- 1:10:05was a ball game but waited too late.
- 1:10:07Other than that, you only see has not shown anything despite
- 1:10:10all these recruits because I'm not one of those guys is going
- 1:10:13to tell you. They're killing it like that,
- 1:10:14because if you, if you were being honest on the boundary
- 1:10:18Corner podcast, a lot of these high-profile recruits.
- 1:10:21They've gotten have not panned out and it's been three years.
- 1:10:24So don't talk about their killing it.
- 1:10:26It's been three years. Ears.
- 1:10:28Okay. So UNC and West Virginia to me
- 1:10:32or UNC and UVA those. Our culture games where you VA
- 1:10:35is in the same boat, we are, they feeling real good?
- 1:10:37They feel like Elliot's going to take the state, where our
- 1:10:40recruiting them now they got, they got it, they got some guys
- 1:10:43on staff, some former player. So I think you continue the
- 1:10:46streak against them or contribute continue that mindset
- 1:10:48and beating them. That's going to be real helpful
- 1:10:50and like keeping that Mystique that that Stranglehold, we have
- 1:10:54over there mentally, and then of the other guy, You can throw in
- 1:10:58the game. I'm not really going to type of
- 1:10:59NC State like that. I think like David say, NC
- 1:11:02State. Even that year my cousin went
- 1:11:04down there when they were NC State was favored.
- 1:11:07The only time they really dog is like that was our first year in
- 1:11:10ACC after that talk tough laws to USC SC.
- 1:11:15And then we came home and they had defensive line, they all
- 1:11:18went to NFL and they they sacked.
- 1:11:20Brian Randall like eight times. That was a great new NC State
- 1:11:24team. Other than that, typically,
- 1:11:26Virginia Tech even during the winter.
- 1:11:27They are. And even when Beamer was there,
- 1:11:29we play teams like Louisville and NC State.
- 1:11:31We tend to kind of rise up to them.
- 1:11:34It's the inferior opponents. We struggle against.
- 1:11:36So, I mean, that's my list, man. I mean, I don't think anybody I
- 1:11:40think all this were great but to me, you can probably hear the
- 1:11:42passion of my voice, man. I'm just tired of our brand,
- 1:11:46taking a hit, I'm tired. Like I grew up in the era where
- 1:11:50Miami always got more hype than us but that reason why I didn't
- 1:11:53like that. I didn't want that game to
- 1:11:55change because that was always a good measuring stick for Just
- 1:11:58like West Virginia when I played them every year was a good
- 1:12:00measuring stick because those are culture games because Miami,
- 1:12:04again, I think somebody posted on Twitter the day when they
- 1:12:09were really, really good. They had your Corey Harris.
- 1:12:12They were supposed to be back. They were recognizing the
- 1:12:14nation. We were rating them, 11 2009,
- 1:12:16smoke them, 30 127. Yep, before the UNC and said it
- 1:12:20was raining too hard. Okay, Ryan Williams and Tyrod,
- 1:12:24Taylor went crazy. Anyone that knows the game knows
- 1:12:26tie rod was better that you Cory.
- 1:12:27Harris. But who was getting on the
- 1:12:29height? Jacory Harris.
- 1:12:31That's just because my auntie will always get the hike.
- 1:12:33So, don't let these guys named Steve who you on these sites,
- 1:12:37man. What if you couldn't tell
- 1:12:39College GameDay a damn thing that week I will never ever
- 1:12:43forget it. They were saying Jacory Heisman,
- 1:12:46he was gonna come in there. Blow the doors off of us and all
- 1:12:49of a sudden the elements. It was a it was like a monsoon.
- 1:12:52It was it was a monsoon. Yeah.
- 1:12:57Out. Oh my gosh.
- 1:12:59Yeah that's why my parents are dumb and pouring down rain.
- 1:13:01That's what I'm saying, bro. Like you get the right guys in
- 1:13:03Blacksburg my dad, getting the gospel, how the springs, and the
- 1:13:05right guys in. You get the guys understand, you
- 1:13:09know, coach. And when I say go during, I
- 1:13:10ain't talking about getting DUIs and getting arrested, I'm
- 1:13:13talking about when you were on the field, you know, they're
- 1:13:15going to bring it, you know, they don't have a sense of
- 1:13:17urgency on every play when you take pride and maybe that
- 1:13:20includes the personal foul and maybe that could include some
- 1:13:22intimidation. But I made it a day that's when
- 1:13:25I watch this. It was very tuck your shirt in.
- 1:13:27Crisp Shake hand, pull up, help a guy up.
- 1:13:30That's just not my type of football.
- 1:13:32I want to get back to take football when we were, you know,
- 1:13:34people hated as people forget real quick and I'm gonna shut
- 1:13:37up. People forget that in Old floor,
- 1:13:40they did not want us in the ACC because we were physical.
- 1:13:45They said, I brand of football was to grimy.
- 1:13:48You know, I'm saying? So I can't wait to do to you
- 1:13:50again because they talking I'm telling you right now guys, and
- 1:13:53everybody watching and listening, they talking real
- 1:13:55greasy down there. They feel like it's going to be
- 1:13:57sweet. I'm just telling y'all that's my
- 1:14:00get it. I'm hearing the same thing every
- 1:14:03time I'm down there. I'm hearing it Odie, Odie, you
- 1:14:05going to put up the real good fight.
- 1:14:08We got to go, we got to go out and set the tone and make sure
- 1:14:11that that thing is settled by halftime.
- 1:14:14Listen, listen, if we lose that game, bro, all this stuff we
- 1:14:17doing all your great shows, all this buildup, What changes if
- 1:14:22anything ruin the deeper hole? You can't do that game.
- 1:14:26You can't lose that game. That's a, that's a recruiting
- 1:14:29bed that we are trying to re-establish.
- 1:14:32Good relationship with its at their place.
- 1:14:35It said, they're in the 757. It's a team that on paper, we
- 1:14:41should squash. If you don't go and do it,
- 1:14:42that's a problem. 100 pattern on a Ian Brown we got a bunch of
- 1:14:47questions here believe it or not so I'll let you start picking
- 1:14:51them out. I'm going to pick one here
- 1:14:52because we got this texted to us because I buddy Robbie Compton.
- 1:14:57He's a coach down at North Wilkesboro, he wanted to ask
- 1:15:00basically the offensive linemen and start with John here.
- 1:15:04How much did life change going from playing High School
- 1:15:08offensive line to power five offensive line as far as the
- 1:15:12time to prepare your commitment and level of opponent.
- 1:15:15I'll let John John, you lead the white if you want to chip
- 1:15:18anything in because you did the same thing. 30 years ago.
- 1:15:21Oh man. It was, it was nice day, man.
- 1:15:23Not when I got to college the speed of the game.
- 1:15:46We are as you get going you get smarter in the game and you
- 1:15:49know, their health watching them and honestly getting a different
- 1:15:52program helped me a lot. So I would say oh say is like
- 1:15:56night and day man. Well, from high school to
- 1:15:58college the biggest a big job Why didn't think that on top of
- 1:16:02that? Yeah, I'll be quick.
- 1:16:04Then, you know, because I just finished talking a lot, but I'll
- 1:16:06just say he's a, he's a hundred percent right, bro.
- 1:16:08Like it did the day, I always say when it comes to recruiting
- 1:16:11rankings, and look at the office and I'm in high school, I think
- 1:16:14that's the toughest position to evaluate because, you know, I
- 1:16:18think and I played during the Golden Era, the peninsula
- 1:16:20districts, I want to get some dogs are fevers and and Bethel,
- 1:16:23and and Warrick and Menchville, but at the same time, there was
- 1:16:27nice men and scrimmages or regular season games, I was
- 1:16:30going against a guy to the, like a Toddler.
- 1:16:32You know, you just came to my waist.
- 1:16:33I was just look at him and look in the stands while I was
- 1:16:36blocking him, but then you get the text.
- 1:16:37You're going against Cornell Brown, John eagleburger Corey
- 1:16:40Moore called Bradley David few and Nate Nate Williams and you
- 1:16:44don't kiss of men. And it's just one of those
- 1:16:47things you got to be physically tough agile, and also be able to
- 1:16:51think because the offensive line position you have to be
- 1:16:54aggressive, and you have to know how to block One play, eight,
- 1:16:57different ways, depending on what front, you're going to see
- 1:17:00and that stuff. And you got to be able to do it
- 1:17:02because you know, you won't know who I am until I miss a blocked.
- 1:17:05You know. So if it's an adjustment.
- 1:17:09Yeah. Okay.
- 1:17:10I would do it, the white change our, our deepest line was almost
- 1:17:14better than everybody ACC, so I'm not sure if I can get better
- 1:17:17with them, you know, like you said, so.
- 1:17:33Yeah, I'll talk about, you know, High School guys being small.
- 1:17:35I mean, I played III, I'm six foot in cleats.
- 1:17:39Played it about 245 in high school with there was some, some
- 1:17:42small ass, guys, I was going again, so, compared to to you
- 1:17:46two gentlemen. I know that's that, you know,
- 1:17:48that jump from going against, you know, occasionally players
- 1:17:51like that. To, you know, everybody is
- 1:17:55running around with, with your size, your agility for that
- 1:17:59sized. I think that's the big thing
- 1:18:01that You know, people sometimes discount is like, you know, you
- 1:18:04know, people are 64 65 out there 320 pounds and can fucking move.
- 1:18:12And I think that, you know, some people don't really, really
- 1:18:15think about that sometimes. So that's good to kind of, kind
- 1:18:19of put that out there for the listeners.
- 1:18:22The next one, we got here. This is kind of to everybody.
- 1:18:25So, you know, let me know who you want to, who wants to jump
- 1:18:27in. On this one first, this is from
- 1:18:31Um, at hunker down hokey on Twitter, with all of our
- 1:18:35exceptional skill players. All of our experience skill
- 1:18:37players being more role players than home run hitters.
- 1:18:42Who is this often, who in this offense, is going to emerge as
- 1:18:45the big play threat in 2022. And I'll actually kick it over
- 1:18:52to Mike first a live mic lead on this one.
- 1:18:55If you got something like yeah Malachi Thomas.
- 1:18:58I mean we saw glimpses of it last year but I think it's going
- 1:19:01to have to be to Malachi or maybe Keshawn.
- 1:19:03King like David mentioned earlier, like someone who has
- 1:19:06shown the potential and has produced at times throughout
- 1:19:10their career and Keyshawn skin Keyshawn Kings case or you know
- 1:19:14at times last year in Malachi Thomas's case.
- 1:19:16And you know all indications are Malachi Thompson.
- 1:19:19Put some way. Ontario.
- 1:19:20So I think that's huge, that's a concern over the course of a
- 1:19:23full season, you know, last year he was playing, he was so lean
- 1:19:27when he was playing last year. That was a concern.
- 1:19:29If he was going to, you know, kind of project this forward
- 1:19:32over a full season, you know, what was that going to look like
- 1:19:34health-wise form, but I think it's going to have to be
- 1:19:37somebody in the running back room at potentially day.
- 1:19:40One Lofton tube though. If you look at like the
- 1:19:42receiving Corps like we haven't really seen enough of him yet.
- 1:19:46To really make an indication one way or another, if he's going to
- 1:19:48be kind of like a home run hitting, Type guy, but he's got
- 1:19:51some serious speed. So if you get the ball in his
- 1:19:53hands, I think that that, that would be something I think that
- 1:19:55would benefit Tech as well. But yeah, I mean I think the
- 1:19:59question is fair like a lot of the experienced guys, were
- 1:20:02carrying our kind of more roll guys, or at least that's been
- 1:20:05their role so far. It's just been possession type
- 1:20:08receivers and like, Kayla Smith's case writer, you know, a
- 1:20:12guy who's been like a goal line type, a core has been in and out
- 1:20:14of the running back rotation, like Jalen holson.
- 1:20:16So who's that guy going to be? And I think it's either going to
- 1:20:18be mouth. Tom szaky, Chongqing.
- 1:20:21Yeah, we saw ballot kind of jump out with two big games last year
- 1:20:24and then we didn't see a whole lot of him down the stretch
- 1:20:27there, so it's going to be good to see if he can kind of settle
- 1:20:30into a consistent role for us this year and because we really,
- 1:20:34I mean, thinking back, Herbert, 20, 20 years side, we it's been
- 1:20:39a long time since we've had a consistent lead back, so be nice
- 1:20:42to have a guy that we can see that from maybe in back-to-back
- 1:20:45years. Finally have a truly back again.
- 1:20:48So it's, you know, David Mann that.
- 1:20:51Yeah, not since David Wilson as we had guys like, don't don't
- 1:20:55forget Khalil Herbert. Now, I know but.
- 1:20:58But I mean, I'm saying David. Yeah.
- 1:21:00I was thinking back to back. Back to back years.
- 1:21:02I have to vacuum trap for that guy.
- 1:21:10I think it's is where we always want to find someone as it, is
- 1:21:14it, anybody sneaky out there, you know, we're hearing things
- 1:21:17about Tucker, Holloway being fast, A, he's a true freshman, I
- 1:21:22can't see that. I mean, is it someone in the
- 1:21:24return game? I know colbeck return colbeck
- 1:21:27fast, but you're not gonna put cold back out there and play
- 1:21:30wide out. But can you, can you Kenny
- 1:21:32Kitty? Do a kickoff return and I hope
- 1:21:35David and a few weeks. They let you guys into those
- 1:21:37sessions because it got runs a 10-1, 300 meters, he's gonna
- 1:21:42return kicks. He's gonna return case bumper.
- 1:21:44I already said that, okay, I watched him play.
- 1:21:51That kid was a freak on kickoff returns, he'll be out there.
- 1:21:57Yes, so to answer the quote back question.
- 1:22:00I mean, he's going to be a guy that they're going to get the
- 1:22:02ball to in space, right? You know his hands they've
- 1:22:05talked you know, Brent Pride mentioned last week, his hands
- 1:22:08of his hands are fine, you know, but he also hasn't really
- 1:22:11touched a football play competitive football in for five
- 1:22:14years now you know it's been a while, he's not going to catch a
- 1:22:19slant. Across the middle and traffic.
- 1:22:21He's going to be a guy. You throw it to the flat and you
- 1:22:23let him do a couple guys. Yeah, put him.
- 1:22:26They work for you. Put him in week three.
- 1:22:28We only know experiments week one, we treat.
- 1:23:13I did research after that game. As far as the record goes back
- 1:23:17to 1987 which is when Frank Beamer first started, Is it
- 1:23:20first true freshman Drew freshman ever to record three
- 1:23:23touchdowns in the game and then you know he disappeared down the
- 1:23:28stretch and got you know didn't have more than seven rushing
- 1:23:31attempts in the final four games of the Season.
- 1:23:33He had inconsistent touches how Virginia Tech uses him and this
- 1:23:38will be a question. I'm sure somebody will ask stew
- 1:23:40hope tomorrow at media day. How Virginia Tech uses the
- 1:23:44running backs. Virginia Tech needs to have
- 1:23:46balance on the offense. It can't be just running the
- 1:23:50ball or just passing the ball in the receiving game.
- 1:23:53I think Caleb Smith. We saw what he could do during
- 1:23:56the Spring Game and I think I think there was such a
- 1:24:00disconnect after Holman Wiggins left in that wide receiver room.
- 1:24:06You know, Caleb Smith again was told to go, he was suggested to
- 1:24:10go play at FCS level, or did he d 2?
- 1:24:13And we saw him torchin, you know, Virginia Tech's dbe's left
- 1:24:16and right. And the spring game he had 250
- 1:24:18plus yard touchdowns with Grant Wells.
- 1:24:20We know the arm Grant Wells has. I think it's going to be either
- 1:24:24malachite Thomas or Caleb Smith in the passing game.
- 1:24:27You know one of those guys. Guys is kind of going to have to
- 1:24:30come up and make some big plays, but it's gonna have to be a
- 1:24:32balance and it cannot just be the two of them contributing
- 1:24:36because it is just the two of them contributing.
- 1:24:38You're going to see an offense is going to stall a lot and you
- 1:24:41know we all know what happens when when you only have two or
- 1:24:44three contributors make it easy for the defense to man up on
- 1:24:47them. Yeah, I agree with that.
- 1:24:51I agree with that 100%. And I think that, you know, when
- 1:24:54you look at Caleb Smith, I think his leadership is obviously
- 1:24:56going to be probably the key attribute attribute.
- 1:24:58He brings to the table this year, but having that veteran
- 1:25:03presence in that room, I think is going to be a benefit for
- 1:25:06everybody across the board as well, but I'm going to go to
- 1:25:09another question here. This one's also kind of to
- 1:25:11everybody. This is from at John underscore,
- 1:25:15Earl ivy on Twitter, Stephen, Earl.
- 1:25:21How important will it be to have the same starting quarterback
- 1:25:25for all 12 games in the 2022 season and I'm going to kick it
- 1:25:30to. Let's see who, let's get Don.
- 1:25:33Vila da bu lead off on this one if you want to.
- 1:25:37You said the same quarterback for all 12 games.
- 1:25:40Yeah, you don't mean shit. If he asks, I mean, is he good?
- 1:25:47Okay, he's above me. All right.
- 1:25:58The die. But yeah he played I mean really
- 1:26:02he threw some Hospital balls in the spring game bro he could
- 1:26:05have he gonna get somebody killed in a real game broke?
- 1:26:08I mean we don't talk for real, we don't talk for real.
- 1:26:10Yeah. I'm gonna ballsy throwing that
- 1:26:12spring and get somebody killed in a real game, bro.
- 1:26:15Like let's keep it a band. Yeah, I mean like well it's
- 1:26:20definitely I think impressed me the most in the spring game.
- 1:26:23Those two touchdown passes. The Caleb Caleb Smith we can do
- 1:26:26that. That every game, fantastic.
- 1:26:29I mean, I don't care. You see what happened with and
- 1:26:32this is a knock on anyone, but you saw what happened with Ryan,
- 1:26:35Willis, few years back and headed hooker comes in and takes
- 1:26:38over. And, you know, then hendon's the
- 1:26:41guy, it's like, I want who's best.
- 1:26:43I was playing the best at this point, it doesn't matter.
- 1:26:47Whoever is the best man for the job.
- 1:26:49That's why I went out there. Always Baby, you got anything on
- 1:26:54this one? I mean I will just say this oh
- 1:26:59sorry I thought you said David not to go ahead Danny that
- 1:27:04worries guys AI it starts and ends with Grant Wells this year
- 1:27:07I mean it's going to start then with it the quarterback position
- 1:27:09is it always will there's not really anything you don't need
- 1:27:13to think too hard about that. I've heard Malachi Thomas
- 1:27:15brought up to we didn't really get to see him at all in the
- 1:27:17spring game obviously but once they solidified the quarterback
- 1:27:22position we get the announcement we get that offensive line in
- 1:27:25place. They just need to start cranking
- 1:27:27it out. That's all that it comes down to
- 1:27:28for me. I want to see somebody played 12
- 1:27:32games because I think if we have somebody played 12 games, Wells
- 1:27:35Brown, whoever it means we didn't get the offensive line
- 1:27:38injured because I think if you if you tell me we have
- 1:27:41quarterback, you know, Grant Wells, played 8 games, Jason
- 1:27:44Brown played for somebody on the offensive line got hurt and they
- 1:27:47got the shit knocked out of them once or twice and they were out
- 1:27:50multiple weeks. So I'd love to see one guy.
- 1:27:53But the Dons point if he's ass, it doesn't matter.
- 1:27:56If he's asked you got to pull him.
- 1:27:57Now he goes out there and plays solid solid.
- 1:28:01I'm not I don't expect. I don't expect spectacular but
- 1:28:03if you play solid lean on the bread fried defense I'd be found
- 1:28:07the guy going 12 games you can you can win games with a game
- 1:28:11manager. It's true that we can't wait.
- 1:28:14I mean it's is offense, Wednesday is offense.
- 1:28:18I used to like it when he had manageable quarterbacks because
- 1:28:22it's a quarterback friendly offense until he forces them to
- 1:28:25run too much. Much.
- 1:28:26And that's what he did with her and my sister and even Gerard
- 1:28:29another quarterbacks it was, it was too many quarterback powers
- 1:28:34and too many runs. When you have running backs that
- 1:28:36can do the same thing. I think, you know, I know Tyler
- 1:28:40born, I knew Tyler born before he came to Virginia Tech and I
- 1:28:44talked to him, he'll he they know what they're doing.
- 1:28:48I mean as far as you noted on these point about him being an
- 1:28:51ass, I think that's anything. I think it's a competition with
- 1:28:54prize. God.
- 1:28:54Now he doesn't get it done, they're going to look elsewhere.
- 1:28:56Swear but I think right now it's more.
- 1:28:58So while putting putting the responsibility on everybody
- 1:29:01versus on one person. I, you know I think a lot of
- 1:29:04times there was too much put on Burmeister and even it was a
- 1:29:08quarterback from the offense. Many, when I say that I'm
- 1:29:10talking about the Reeds and everything they were forced to
- 1:29:12make, they really have that many reads, but the same time, you
- 1:29:16can't run your quarterbacks that much.
- 1:29:19It just it just doesn't, it doesn't prove to be successful.
- 1:29:23Let's, let's talk about that a little bit more real quick
- 1:29:25because the one of the biggest criticisms I had last year is
- 1:29:27that you've got the read option in your, your tool book, right?
- 1:29:34But so often they were essentially designed handoffs
- 1:29:40but then when you, so when you're not decoying anything,
- 1:29:42your quarterbacks no longer a decoy, so when he's running,
- 1:29:45he's running, and when he's not, he's not, you're not, there's an
- 1:29:48element of the offense that's supposed to be the option and
- 1:29:52make Aching the defense confused as to who's going to have the
- 1:29:55ball but you're taking that away with the predictability of the
- 1:29:57calls. So I mean that was my beef with
- 1:30:01with the way that things were called last year and that hurt
- 1:30:05Burmeister when he's running the ball because the defense is key
- 1:30:09in on that they're looking at it and saying, okay, well they're
- 1:30:11going to run power when they when they go in this motion or
- 1:30:14when they're in this formation and going this motion, I mean,
- 1:30:17they were they were telegraphing that all the time.
- 1:30:20We saw it coming and the defense's that we played song
- 1:30:23Come into and Burmeister. You know, the whole joke was the
- 1:30:27perk Mi sure thing when he was popping pills on the sidelines,
- 1:30:30trying to get back in the game. I mean we got our quarterback,
- 1:30:32that's getting beat the hell up and we're not doing anything to
- 1:30:37make, make his game, come to him better and get him comfortable
- 1:30:41back there. And I that was a consistent
- 1:30:44problem. Throughout what at school.
- 1:30:46That's that's what I mean, about skiing.
- 1:30:47Like a lot of times and those after after Rod Evans and those
- 1:30:51guys left and then the following you had Josh Axe and they still
- 1:30:54finished the season ranked they won nine games but after that
- 1:30:58Talent left those two years left they will force the coach.
- 1:31:00Those last three seasons, right? Tip on what you saw was a lack
- 1:31:04of scheme and lack of creativity.
- 1:31:06So for example, after by weeks of off weeks, or even in the
- 1:31:09second half, you never saw any place new place.
- 1:31:12You never saw any new situations where they were ruins.
- 1:31:15Any wrinkles, you wouldn't see anything, where they would take
- 1:31:19somebody and put them in the slot where he was out at The X.
- 1:31:22Like they didn't, they didn't mix things up.
- 1:31:25It wasn't really until that last year, when they stay the fake
- 1:31:28field goal and fake, they got Creek, has it?
- 1:31:30They knew they were going to be gone but to your point B, you
- 1:31:34know, a lot of that is more. So just steaming and coaching,
- 1:31:37you know, and having wrinkles and knowing how to use your
- 1:31:39personnel, you don't have to look football, it's not a
- 1:31:43complex for it. When it comes to coaching, you
- 1:31:45got to just take your personnel personnel and just to it a lot
- 1:31:48of times, you know, with the No offense plays.
- 1:31:51We had they were predictable. I mean, the Jet Sweep wasn't.
- 1:31:55The problem is that the timing of when they called it a lot of
- 1:31:59things work. Next week it was the timing of
- 1:32:01it situational play calling the timing the location on the field
- 1:32:06going into the boundary when you did need to some of the most
- 1:32:11frustrating parts of the last few years especially like you
- 1:32:14run that jet Suite up to the boundary and it's like second
- 1:32:16and four. Brian, you got to talk me off a
- 1:32:20ledge, he's like, you know, you do that play and it works,
- 1:32:23you're going to get the first down.
- 1:32:24If it gets blown up, its third and 11, its third and 12 it will
- 1:32:28get its, it doesn't make sense to call that play to that side
- 1:32:32of the field in that situation. And that's the one thing over
- 1:32:35the past. 34 Seasons that got frustrating, it was
- 1:32:41situationally, you got worse, and worse and worse in, you
- 1:32:45know, somebody, you know, it was on here is like, when was the
- 1:32:49moment that you felt for Wendy? Wasn't the guy and it was
- 1:32:53Liberty. I lost my shit.
- 1:32:54Go back and listen to that episode on 20/20.
- 1:32:57I literally lost my shit that day on this podcast.
- 1:33:01And that's what that's when I was done it.
- 1:33:02Because, you know, you looked on the side, there was no juice
- 1:33:06with the players. Hers.
- 1:33:08That's one of those games where John the white Daniel made a
- 1:33:12point. We've all been discussing it.
- 1:33:14Go out there in squash them, go out there and make them that our
- 1:33:18bus ride the Lynchburg the most miserable bus route of their
- 1:33:21life with ODU and the first game of the season make that walk
- 1:33:25back to their locker room. The most miserable Hundred-Foot
- 1:33:29walk of their life. You need to make sure that they
- 1:33:31don't want to come back out after halftime.
- 1:33:33Damn right. You if teams like that rolling
- 1:33:35to your place, you need to make sure that they don't want to
- 1:33:37come out. Halftime again.
- 1:33:39I mean, that that situation football that kid.
- 1:33:41I think he transferred to some do.
- 1:33:43One day a school, but we were playing Richmond last year.
- 1:33:47I think we had a turnover. We stopped them and then they
- 1:33:49put him in the backup quarterback and he threw away.
- 1:33:52Yes, that's what I mean about like that that's not you can you
- 1:33:56don't need to be offensive coordinator to know that we're
- 1:33:59not up enough to put it back at backup quarterback in and we're
- 1:34:02only we're at our own 20, you know, it was a close game, he
- 1:34:06threw a pick. That's what I mean about.
- 1:34:08Like you can look at the Way Forest game.
- 1:34:10We lost at Wake Forest. We got what's-his-name Khalil
- 1:34:13Herbert and he's not touching the ball.
- 1:34:16You know, who, you know, who's running the ball that night and
- 1:34:19didn't hook her and he wasn't 100% know.
- 1:34:23That's why I said, some of this stuff is skiing guys.
- 1:34:25It's team. It's just when I think you guys,
- 1:34:29I think an interesting point here and I'll make this real
- 1:34:31quick. This is the first time in a
- 1:34:33while where Virginia Tech's offensive coordinator hasn't
- 1:34:36been the quarterback. Coach.
- 1:34:38You've got Brad Glenn. He's only the quarterbacks coach
- 1:34:43and when we got a chance to talk to him back in March kind of
- 1:34:46when he was first hired, he and all the other assistants and he
- 1:34:49said he's really excited just to only work with quarterbacks.
- 1:34:52You know he's been offensive coordinator before, he knows how
- 1:34:54it is but he can sit there and develop Grant Wells, who I
- 1:34:58should remind you guys. If you've forgotten, he's got
- 1:35:02another year after this and then he's got a covid, your if he
- 1:35:04wants it. So he's got potentially three
- 1:35:06years. Playing for Virginia Tech.
- 1:35:08He might not be at his best this year, maybe but he's got plenty
- 1:35:12of time to develop with, with a quarterbacks coach, who is
- 1:35:17solely focused on him. Now, how the communication works
- 1:35:19with Brad, Glenn and Tyler bones going to be interesting.
- 1:35:22I'm sure that's something. I don't think they'll come up
- 1:35:24throughout the season and, you know, throughout the future.
- 1:35:27But but the development of the quarterbacks with a, with a
- 1:35:32quarterback, only assistant, I think that's going to be really
- 1:35:36interesting. Yeah, I agree with you and I
- 1:35:39think that Dynamic is going to be interesting to see how that
- 1:35:41works out. You talked about having Glenn.
- 1:35:45There you also have, obviously Rudolph has had some offensive
- 1:35:48coordinator experience as well. So you got three guys that have
- 1:35:54at least called 1 u 1 game in their career at this point, you
- 1:36:00know. So it's going to be interesting
- 1:36:02how they how that Dynamic works. But I think there's a lot of
- 1:36:04potential there as we kind of had into the season, but I'm
- 1:36:07going to I'm gonna jump over to this next one.
- 1:36:09And this one is a little bit of a different angle here and this
- 1:36:12is to everybody. So whoever wants to chime in go
- 1:36:15for it. But this is from Matt Parker on
- 1:36:18YouTube is the hype around the new coaches masking and obvious
- 1:36:24below, 500 team. So we getting spicy here, guys.
- 1:36:31I'll go first, I'll go first here, I don't know if it's an
- 1:36:33obvious below, 500 team. Like I talked about this off the
- 1:36:39top like the team that Fuente inherited in 2016, from Beamer
- 1:36:46is a lot better than the team prize inheriting in 2022 from
- 1:36:51Fuente. With that being said, like This
- 1:36:56team still won six regular-season games last year,
- 1:36:59right? Like and I think they're
- 1:37:02upgrading a quarterback. I don't know if it's an obvious
- 1:37:06below, 500 team, and that's before you even talk about the
- 1:37:09schedule itself, which there are a lot of teams that lost a lot
- 1:37:14or have questions, write, like, uva's got an entirely new
- 1:37:18coaching staff, UNC, has been all bark, but no bite, right?
- 1:37:22With Mack Brown, like Pittsburgh.
- 1:37:25I think I agree with David, like, Pittsburgh's really
- 1:37:27talented. I think, you know, they're my
- 1:37:29pick to win the coastal, but, you know, you can even like,
- 1:37:32squint a little bit and they got some questions too.
- 1:37:34Right. Cadence Louis.
- 1:37:35A quarterback coming over USC, like what does that look like
- 1:37:38they lose? Kenny picket, they lose your
- 1:37:40Nason. So there's some questions are
- 1:37:42even though they have a lot of talent.
- 1:37:43Like every team's got questions, Miami's got an entirely new
- 1:37:46coaching staff NC State under Dave Turin.
- 1:37:49Like anytime NC State's got expectations, they tend to lose.
- 1:37:54So that's kind of where not great, right?
- 1:37:57And so, and and like, ODU is a winnable, Liberties winnable
- 1:38:02like everyone a winnable games on the Will I just, I pushed
- 1:38:07back a little bit saying. This is an obvious below. 500
- 1:38:10team now is the prai, is the excitement over pry and the
- 1:38:14coaching staff for year one, you know, making people's
- 1:38:18expectations, maybe the fan expectations a little bit higher
- 1:38:22than probably what they should be.
- 1:38:23Yeah, but I think it's like that with almost any new coaching
- 1:38:26regime. That's what happens, there's a
- 1:38:28bump, everybody's more excited about the future than they were
- 1:38:30about the, you know that the past.
- 1:38:33So You know, I think that's part of it.
- 1:38:36I think that's natural. Anytime, there's a coaching
- 1:38:38change. We're moving on from something
- 1:38:39that didn't work out, but at the same time, like I don't think
- 1:38:43this is an obvious below, 500 team.
- 1:38:46I just don't I'll see it. I'm gonna say this real quick
- 1:38:49and everybody kind of gathering think about last year, this team
- 1:38:54was on the doorstep of being West, Virginia and Morgantown in
- 1:38:57September on the door. This close this team was one
- 1:39:01drive away from beating a 11 win Notre.
- 1:39:04Main team in Lane Stadium. Mmm, well, the that won't a joke
- 1:39:08team last year they had them and they let it slip Syracuse game.
- 1:39:13Literally a bomb in the last, 40 seconds, lose that game.
- 1:39:17Dwight, I'm gonna throw it back in.
- 1:39:19I've been talking with Brian about this last week, all week
- 1:39:22you were there and you were watching go 92 to 93 how clingy
- 1:39:28close games that team was in in the next season.
- 1:39:33They went eight regular season. Gaines A9 at the bowl.
- 1:39:36Well, yeah, you know I wish I wasn't I wasn't there, but I was
- 1:39:40coming in but I know Rachel. But yeah, Gracie, I was being
- 1:39:43recruited by my was watching. Grayson I know he wants to talk
- 1:39:46to I was just saying this, I pulled up, I pulled up the
- 1:39:49record, it's funny. You you did that Curtis because
- 1:39:52that's where I was getting ready to say to the guy watching them
- 1:39:54on the YouTube broadcast. Is that even when Jonathan was,
- 1:39:59there you go back, you know, Two thousand, thirteen, fourteen and
- 1:40:03fifteen seven and six Going to 68 and five and two thousand
- 1:40:06twelve seven and six right at the end of the day, even if you
- 1:40:10throw in the 2004 season, when they won the ACC, their first
- 1:40:13year in ACC, there were several games that could have went
- 1:40:17either way. So, in some of those seven and
- 1:40:19six and eight five seasons, Beamers, last 45 years, there
- 1:40:23were several games, where was a call?
- 1:40:26A missed field goal of fumbled snap.
- 1:40:28Even a year when they had Joshua Jackson and they were playing
- 1:40:32Oklahoma State. Getting ready.
- 1:40:33Go out 14 and And they fumbled the ball at the goal line.
- 1:40:37If they score, they go and win that game and they win 10 games
- 1:40:40and point a second year. Yeah, my point is not to become
- 1:40:43clichés but there's a fine line. This is I'm just going to say
- 1:40:47that you mentioned Curtis the 90 to 90 91 92 era, that's Rock.
- 1:40:53Bottom, bro. Virginia Tech, fans have not
- 1:40:55seen Rock Bottom. We just spoiled and we have high
- 1:40:58expectations. My second Point.
- 1:41:00I'ma let, my man, Grayson Rock the mic at the end of the day.
- 1:41:05This is not hype around prai nobody hyping up Tech we won't
- 1:41:09get no votes. You read you a was picked to
- 1:41:12finish ahead of us in the coastal.
- 1:41:15First time I've ever seen that, bro.
- 1:41:17And then on top of we got no votes.
- 1:41:19So at the end of the day, man, like ain't no hike.
- 1:41:22What you have around Virginia Tech fans is excitement because
- 1:41:26you can just see that things are going and trending in the right
- 1:41:29way when it comes to in-state recruiting, getting the right,
- 1:41:32Virginia Tech guys having a Now that you have when a coach that
- 1:41:36lets his assistants interview where we can no more than just a
- 1:41:39head coach, there's a connection with the fans.
- 1:41:42Again that's just people being excited about someone caring
- 1:41:45about their program, the alumni connecting, you know not just
- 1:41:48the football players. But I mean Mike young and pride,
- 1:41:51you know they're tight, you know, they're, you know, not
- 1:41:53tight but they they got respect for each other.
- 1:41:55So is this the energy, man? It's not about like nobody's
- 1:41:58talking about Virginia Tech, right?
- 1:41:59Which is a great thing, but knowing what a Grace, and I know
- 1:42:02you got to talk. Well, no.
- 1:42:04What exactly what you just said Dwight it's not about masking,
- 1:42:08any type of wind situation or whatever its people are excited.
- 1:42:11Like I don't know if you guys remember.
- 1:42:13This is not the video of Brent pry, Corps.
- 1:42:15Cadets first civilian snowball fight and he's out on the drill
- 1:42:18field participating in that last regime never did that.
- 1:42:24Never never, bring didn't even pretend to want to do that and
- 1:42:28people could say, oh, Brent price, putting on a front?
- 1:42:31No he's not. That's him.
- 1:42:32He wants to be out there. He wants to be having a good
- 1:42:36time. He's saying and doing all the
- 1:42:38right things and like At first I'm like is he just doing this
- 1:42:42just to do it and I just saw that Mark Packer came in and
- 1:42:46they did the ACC kind of round table with Virginia Tech and you
- 1:42:50can tell that Brent try once. Virginia Tech to be great.
- 1:42:54You can tell that he wants us to be a national Powerhouse.
- 1:42:57Again wants us to get back to a winning culture.
- 1:43:00And so it's not like it's not about 500.
- 1:43:04Or less, it's about Virginia Tech fans, being excited to have
- 1:43:08a head coach, who wants to be in the building wants to be in,
- 1:43:11Blacksburg cares about the fans. Cares about the players cares,
- 1:43:15about all of it. That's it.
- 1:43:18That's all. I got.
- 1:43:19Awesome, Jersey. Hey, I think John's got
- 1:43:22something he wants to kind of piggyback on that with.
- 1:43:24Go ahead. You got there?
- 1:43:27Yes, sir. Period, that would make it
- 1:43:51exciting. So I like the whites and we
- 1:43:53just, we everyone's so excited to be haven't seen less problem.
- 1:43:56So years, we haven't seen that, you know.
- 1:43:59So it's coming more familiar with what hope you make is all
- 1:44:02about. That's all I got awesome.
- 1:44:05Yeah, I think we're seeing, you know, We've seen what we, what
- 1:44:10we didn't have. And I think now that we've seen
- 1:44:12what we have, I think we're excited about that.
- 1:44:15And for what that means down the road, I think we understand the
- 1:44:18limitations that are potential for 2022, just based on roster
- 1:44:22construction, and depth overall, but that's not to say that it's
- 1:44:27an obvious below. 500 team either.
- 1:44:29I think there is Talent on the roster.
- 1:44:31I just don't think we had as prosthetic.
- 1:44:33I don't think we have enough of it right now.
- 1:44:35Right. So I think that's kind of the,
- 1:44:37the fact, the situation. Hey, Brian and Brian that!
- 1:44:40That what you just last point you just said that.
- 1:44:44Oh, geez, and people that coach will pay attention.
- 1:44:46The media. Know why he said that that's a
- 1:44:48motivating tool. See people didn't hear that.
- 1:44:51People heard they don't have enough Talent.
- 1:44:53He is challenging the guys, and the two and three deep.
- 1:44:56When he says I just don't think we have enough of it.
- 1:44:58The guys playing behind the starters hear that and they take
- 1:45:02it personal the the regular fan heard that it was like, oh my
- 1:45:05God we're not going to make it, he knows who's listening.
- 1:45:08To that because those players here that read that quote to,
- 1:45:11he's telling me that's an indirect challenge.
- 1:45:14Yep, trust me, man. I know the game.
- 1:45:17Yeah, man. All right, we got we got a
- 1:45:20couple more here from the fans and then we're going to get a
- 1:45:22little bit of a wrap up here to kind of call it a night, but the
- 1:45:25next one that will go to is from at Steve Bryce 2020 on Twitter.
- 1:45:32And this is kind of a throwback to 2021 or even before.
- 1:45:35For a lot of you guys, what was the game?
- 1:45:38Or moment in the last few years that let you know that coach
- 1:45:43Fuente was not the guy for Blacksburg.
- 1:45:46I'm sitting this one out already said Liberty.
- 1:45:48It's y'all for Liberty. Mike Liberty, Liberty Haley,
- 1:45:54real quick, real quick. I'm sorry.
- 1:45:56Like I say, Liberty a lot. Like some people are gonna be
- 1:46:00like, oh yeah. ODU and you know, a Donzi would
- 1:46:03say, oh, do you? Yeah, I don't say, oh, to you is
- 1:46:07because I know some weird stuff was having in that game but like
- 1:46:10whenever you lose your quarterback, Weird stuff
- 1:46:14happens. I know the defense wasn't
- 1:46:15getting stopped, everybody's flying but Foster after that
- 1:46:18which you know rightfully so those poor performance but like
- 1:46:21any time you lose a quarterback and you love the game like that
- 1:46:24and your backups not ready to go, like stuff goes a little
- 1:46:28sideways. So nail nail in the coffin
- 1:46:31moment for me, there were a few games before but the nail in the
- 1:46:34coffin was Notre Dame last year after a after that game.
- 1:46:38I was like, it's over. See you?
- 1:46:42Hey, yo. It was Liberty, but I will say
- 1:46:48this to you. Oh, do you?
- 1:46:50Oh, do you have me on tilt? But the one that did it, but it
- 1:46:54kind of got mad because he didn't say the season was the
- 1:46:56dewclaws. Oh, yeah.
- 1:46:58Because I was, I stepped out. I don't miss Tech games.
- 1:47:01I last year, was the first time I was back in Blacksburg for the
- 1:47:06spring game because I had made like 16 17 consecutive spring
- 1:47:09games. So you guys know how much I love
- 1:47:11Tech? I was talking to Pearson pray.
- 1:47:13Before you came back to Coast. We talked about how life when
- 1:47:16Tech lost on Saturdays or whatever.
- 1:47:18They we were done for the rest of the night, right?
- 1:47:20That dupe debacle. I want you to Wu-Tang Snoop
- 1:47:23concert. I was like, okay, this would be,
- 1:47:25this would be a safe night and I had the phone, I was watching
- 1:47:28the game on my phone, my wife. And I'm like, why we rotating on
- 1:47:31his quarterback? What are we doing?
- 1:47:33Next thing, that was forty five to ten and that Duke team was
- 1:47:36horrible and they kept showing Wednesday on the sidelines
- 1:47:38chewing gum and he had his head set on, he just never change the
- 1:47:41faces. I was like yo he ain't it man.
- 1:47:44I started to go back and circle around two guys.
- 1:47:47Like Donald be another people who were adamant that he wasn't
- 1:47:50it, and the thing about dissing Jonathan knows this when you are
- 1:47:54from a player, whether it's your high school especially your
- 1:47:56college like Tech. I don't care if it's Oscar, the
- 1:47:59grouch's the head coach. We want to see the program win.
- 1:48:02I wasn't anti Fuente. I just wanted to see us win.
- 1:48:06This is my program bro. And like that Duke debacle was
- 1:48:09bad. But Liberty, I just I was The
- 1:48:13man, I was ready to drive up there, bro.
- 1:48:15Real talk full disclosure, I'm bad.
- 1:48:20As they were honoring, the 1999 team that night, maybe even
- 1:48:24Grayson not right. Yeah.
- 1:48:25Thank you. We got it.
- 1:48:26Are you going? Because my cousin was there and
- 1:48:31I asked him and he was like, first of all.
- 1:48:33And when you've been at many people from the 919 there
- 1:48:35because of him in the lack of disconnection and then when I
- 1:48:39read, he didn't know it and he didn't talk to them.
- 1:48:43I said, bro. Shut the ill it's over.
- 1:48:50I what about you Danny? Where's Danny?
- 1:49:25So we're about to talk predictions but less first
- 1:49:28gauge. Some expectations at hokey and
- 1:49:32Bama on. Twitter asked, what would you
- 1:49:35all consider a good first season under the new staff?
- 1:49:43Now, don't let's go, let's go. Let's go with, let's go with
- 1:49:46David on this one first. As somebody in the media who
- 1:49:51covers this team on a regular basis, I would say getting to
- 1:49:58getting to and not necessarily winning it but at least getting
- 1:50:02to a bowl game. I think winning.
- 1:50:03It would be a bonus but getting to a bowl game which means you
- 1:50:07finished above 500. That is a successful season.
- 1:50:10Again, as we've talked about many times, football is a game
- 1:50:14where there are many injuries the margins can be ever so.
- 1:50:18So slim you don't know what's going to happen, but if you're
- 1:50:21one Brent, Prayin, this staff can overcome any challenges,
- 1:50:25they face and get to a bowl game.
- 1:50:27I think winning it is, is a not, I'm not going to, you know, put
- 1:50:32a grade on it, but that would be a pretty good season for a
- 1:50:37first-year, you know, just with the cupboard that was kind of
- 1:50:40left with the depth that, you know, there's, as I said
- 1:50:46earlier, there's pretty good 22. Orders.
- 1:50:49But after that, the depth kind of Wayne's.
- 1:50:52So there's not a ton of work with if you can get to a bowl
- 1:50:55game and and show that off to recruit guys in the transfer
- 1:51:00portal, that you might be interested in transferring to
- 1:51:03your program and in the spring or winter.
- 1:51:07You know, I think I think that is a good starting point for
- 1:51:10year one because you can say, hey look, you know, we didn't
- 1:51:15completely fall off the face of the Earth, it might be a A
- 1:51:18rebuilding year but we still had some success.
- 1:51:24John what are you? Yeah yeah I agree with him and
- 1:51:29go definitely bowl games went in the bowl.
- 1:51:31Game is big but I just wanted to not to be okay with losing man.
- 1:51:35I want to see a fire. You know what I mean?
- 1:51:37Like, I feel like last year many times, our players were kind of
- 1:51:40used to lose him and it was just, it was normal to lose and
- 1:51:43we saw a lot of guys, speaking of bowl game, we saw a lot of
- 1:51:46guys out the bowl game that never happened when I was
- 1:51:48playing, you know? So I think it's important that
- 1:51:51we that we bring that back this season.
- 1:51:54But I'll go with David Mann, making a bowl game this year.
- 1:51:58Grayson, I think making a bowl game, six and six, and you got
- 1:52:04to win one of the big three, and you gotta kick uva's ass beat,
- 1:52:08you beat UVA, and you win either Boston College, West, Virginia.
- 1:52:13And I'm going to say Miami when one of those preferably West
- 1:52:17Virginia, buv a makeable Dwight are you still with us?
- 1:52:23Yeah I am my bad. You're gonna you're good.
- 1:52:27So what's you know, what's what you successful season?
- 1:52:31I like David's Point that's why I left off at but I think if
- 1:52:35they can get to a bowl game also they can if they can win games
- 1:52:39that supposed to win. That is always been the knock on
- 1:52:43us since I was at Tech since before I got the tech but I'm
- 1:52:47part of that group, that kind of set everything off.
- 1:52:50And you look about all many teams that Tech that would have
- 1:52:53played for a national championship or what it went to
- 1:52:57a BCS Bowl Alliance bowl or a New Year, New Year's day, but we
- 1:53:02were always like a play here, you know, the Miami of Ohio, the
- 1:53:07temple games, it proc, and get us over that stigma.
- 1:53:11Winning the games were supposed to win.
- 1:53:15This is a 67 when team, because look at the schedule, I don't
- 1:53:19like doing. It because I know the schedule
- 1:53:21is tricky, no matter what season them, even Alabama's, you can't
- 1:53:24do that. But I feel like if there's a
- 1:53:27mindset where they can win games are supposed to win.
- 1:53:29Well, we're not like, man. How did we lose that game?
- 1:53:32I mean, you got the so many games, the Matt, Ryan's, all
- 1:53:36those different games. When you, like, man, we had that
- 1:53:38guy like you guys. Curtis.
- 1:53:40You just mentioned it died last year.
- 1:53:41Made last year. I was in Richmond.
- 1:53:43Watching the game on my phone, man.
- 1:53:45We were killing Notre Dame. We got that.
- 1:53:47Pick 6. We're up nine.
- 1:53:49And I'm like, we're going to beat Notre Dame and a prime-time
- 1:53:52game. This is perfect and bad clock
- 1:53:56management. Crazy plays and substitutions
- 1:54:00and then we lose the Syracuse game, again, we're killing them,
- 1:54:04I mean, and you give a big play, I mean, but you can go back to
- 1:54:07even when the full of brothers were there, we were in FedEx
- 1:54:10feeling. We lose that the last 20 seconds
- 1:54:12against Cincinnati. Yep.
- 1:54:14So, a proc can get us to a point where we can win games, were
- 1:54:16supposed to win. And I mean, what does that mean?
- 1:54:20Games when you're the better team because I think now you
- 1:54:23have what four or five games right there?
- 1:54:27Because I mean there's nobody on the schedule right now like
- 1:54:31usually the back especially when Jonathan McLaughlin was there
- 1:54:35during his era, they were playing like this, Alabama's the
- 1:54:39start this season, I mean they were playing because at that
- 1:54:42point Jonathan and them had they earned the right to do that.
- 1:54:45We put them in the position where they would now carrying
- 1:54:47the torch and they were playing those.
- 1:54:49Big kick-off, Chick-fil-A games, and they were ranked, and they
- 1:54:53were feature. And they deserved all that right
- 1:54:55now. I'm glad we're where we are.
- 1:54:56We need to Lady later, found the groundwork down and get back to
- 1:55:00that. So, if I could just showed me a
- 1:55:02competent football team, that knows what they're doing after a
- 1:55:04timeout and they win games mixed in with some trick plays, or
- 1:55:08some, some new wrinkles, and some not identity because again,
- 1:55:11having an identity. I think that's a recipe for a
- 1:55:14good season. I'm gonna go with what Grayson
- 1:55:17said. I love the way you put it.
- 1:55:18Grayson Go to a bowl game, beat UVA and be the big three.
- 1:55:24Hmm. Keep it, keep your, keep your
- 1:55:27keep your in-state rival where they've been for the last 20
- 1:55:30years. Make a statement will get to a
- 1:55:33bowl but to your point Dwight to I love what you're saying.
- 1:55:37I want like it when Don B and John we've all kind of made that
- 1:55:40point. When ODU decides they're going
- 1:55:43to come to Blacksburg again. They're walking in defeated.
- 1:55:46They like when we don't want to go play them, they gonna beat
- 1:55:48the shit out of us. We're gonna Go home hurt.
- 1:55:51That's the way I want it to be. I want teams that do not have
- 1:55:55the same level of players come in with a defeatist mentality.
- 1:55:59And, if we can get that, you went a lot of games by that
- 1:56:02alone because the other guy does not think they can compete
- 1:56:06walking through or walking into the stadium.
- 1:56:09All right, Brian. Let's hit one more with all
- 1:56:11these guys, I think I know where all you guys are going to land
- 1:56:14on this, but we're going to hit it up anyway, as I closing
- 1:56:16question, I think we've lost Mike with the kid but that It
- 1:56:20happens, we know, but for the three fathers on this call up
- 1:56:25top here. We know, we know, it's all good.
- 1:56:28I over under six and a half, that's what Vegas is putting us
- 1:56:31at. Let's go with where you're at
- 1:56:33Dwight over under six and a half.
- 1:56:36I got his over, man. All right, I got us over.
- 1:56:40I just I like the energy. I think we still a game with you
- 1:56:44man. I like, you know, especially I
- 1:56:47think we all touch on this grace and talked about this as well
- 1:56:49man. Just that first game against BC
- 1:56:52and Blacksburg is at night game. I think again you saw that last
- 1:56:56year with North Carolina, the our fan base, shout out to Hokie
- 1:57:00Nation. Everybody is watching this right
- 1:57:01now, fan base for decades has helped us win games.
- 1:57:04I know that sounds crazy because it's not now magic involved, but
- 1:57:08you give them a good. You give them a great product,
- 1:57:10they will support it, they will come, you know, say you build
- 1:57:12it, they will come. They will, they will come.
- 1:57:14And I think His do, I don't think it's, you know, this is an
- 1:57:1811 win team and nothing like that but I think you know the
- 1:57:21energy is right? I got it's over, I got us over,
- 1:57:24but I this is not nostalgic talking.
- 1:57:25This is more soldiers looking at as David and Mike broke down
- 1:57:29about their assessment. And I'm just looking at the
- 1:57:30teams we play. I mean, there's no giving
- 1:57:34against any team like he weathers UVA and all that.
- 1:57:37You know, you look at UVA game. There's been many times when we
- 1:57:40were clearly the better team and we only one like 24 to 21, so
- 1:57:44it's not like, you know, you just gonna blow Them out, but I
- 1:57:47just feel like you can win those games West, Virginia's, that
- 1:57:50winnable game. Boston College, the winnable
- 1:57:52game, you know, Pittsburgh is going to be tough.
- 1:57:54But I mean, it's not like, you know, other than when they had
- 1:57:56picket, it's not like they just put up 45 points.
- 1:57:59So I got us over. David David.
- 1:58:04Let's see it yet next. Yeah, I've got the over I think
- 1:58:10I've been somebody who has said for a while now, you know,
- 1:58:16having having covered the team getting a chance to cover brunt.
- 1:58:19Brian the spring and kind of learn more about his staff in
- 1:58:22the way they want to go about things.
- 1:58:24You know. Again, margins are slim but if
- 1:58:29Virginia Tech can stay healthy and we Can and Player
- 1:58:34Development is obvious. You can see guys getting better.
- 1:58:37I think this is a team that when can can win seven, maybe eight
- 1:58:43games. I don't think there's, I don't
- 1:58:46think there's any any game that's necessarily out of the
- 1:58:48question, you know. Maybe that's because you know,
- 1:58:52of the state of the ACC, just the state of Texas schedule.
- 1:58:56You know, I think Tech probably right now, if I would have to
- 1:58:59guess, I think Tech wins seven games Tech.
- 1:59:02No, I think that's a good number, you know, those Old
- 1:59:07Dominion Wofford Liberty. Those are three games you need
- 1:59:09to win, Virginia? That's a fourth Duke in Georgia
- 1:59:13Tech. That's two more.
- 1:59:14Okay. So which game are you going to
- 1:59:16steal? Or you know what other games you
- 1:59:19going to win? I don't think the schedules
- 1:59:20unfavorable, but I also think you have to have some luck as
- 1:59:23well. Luck's going to factor into it,
- 1:59:25but I think, overall, this is a team that I've got am winning
- 1:59:29seven games and I don't think, I don't think six.
- 1:59:32Wins. If Virginia Tech Megan, I said
- 1:59:34earlier, making a bowl game, that's a success.
- 1:59:38If you can win six games that success because there's going to
- 1:59:41be other factors that go into it, but as of now, I've got Tech
- 1:59:457 wins. I've got the over All right,
- 1:59:50let's go to Mike mix as he feeds his child there.
- 1:59:59And what was it? That was pretty much right on
- 2:00:09the money. I mean, a lot of stuff needs to
- 2:00:13go right for it to be any higher than that.
- 2:00:15Realistically, with the roster, the depth issues in the trenches
- 2:00:17of sure. You guys have touched on.
- 2:00:19When I was stuck in a way for my computer for a few minutes
- 2:00:21offensive and defensive line depth.
- 2:00:24You know, I think is a major issue.
- 2:00:27It's an area where injuries crop up most often I do think Joe
- 2:00:33Rudolph gives the offensive line of fighting chance, but the
- 2:00:36defensive line is where I have a lot of concerns.
- 2:00:39If you're looking at like You know, are you going to be able
- 2:00:42to get after the quarterback consistently once you get past
- 2:00:45the starters? Like, that's a huge question.
- 2:00:47I have Playmakers on the outside.
- 2:00:50I'm still not sure what we have in terms of like proven depth
- 2:00:55are. I know there's a lot of talented
- 2:00:56young guys were all really excited about, but we got to see
- 2:00:59it on the field first. So there there are a lot of
- 2:01:02questions with this roster but there's a lot of questions, like
- 2:01:06I mentioned earlier, a lot of questions with the rest of the
- 2:01:08ACC to and I think The schedule, the way it shakes out, there's a
- 2:01:14lot of winnable games on the schedule, even for a team that's
- 2:01:17rebuilding. So I'm Lehman seven and five at
- 2:01:20the I think if you know you're going to bet a six and a half
- 2:01:23way Mark, I think you bet on. Brent parent is Staff figuring
- 2:01:26it out and year one and kind of getting a long call it, a dead
- 2:01:30cat bounce because that's usually what ends up happening
- 2:01:32when you have to coach going out the door.
- 2:01:34But, you know, I think prying his staff.
- 2:01:37They're going to be able to get more out of this roster than
- 2:01:40Fuente was able to get Have more talented?
- 2:01:42Rosters? That makes sense?
- 2:01:43I just think the coaching staff is going to be a lot better.
- 2:01:45I think it's going to put the players in a lot better
- 2:01:47position, even though this is far from the most talented team
- 2:01:50profile at this time here. All right, John.
- 2:01:55I'll let you go next. I'm going over as well.
- 2:02:00They got the ability to be 3 and know going into West Virginia.
- 2:02:03And I really believe that I think we can definitely go
- 2:02:05through it. All going to West Virginia.
- 2:02:07That's a big time game. Didn't get were for now then
- 2:02:09we're going to roll, you know, that's how the seasons work.
- 2:02:11You know, you get on their role, you keep going, you get better
- 2:02:14and better. So that's that's the first three
- 2:02:16games right there. And then we have a challenge in
- 2:02:18West Virginia and then you got the ACC, but then you got
- 2:02:21Georgia. Tech Duke Liberty.
- 2:02:22That's six. I'm already called it.
- 2:02:25So in between there, you're going to get two or three.
- 2:02:27More without them. So you can see exactly steal at
- 2:02:30least one, right? I never going to feel these one
- 2:02:34or two. So I'm going.
- 2:02:35I'm going over. All right, Grayson based on,
- 2:02:40y'all gonna hate me. But based on what I don't know
- 2:02:43about this coaching staff. I'm taking the under based on
- 2:02:48these last five years alone. I know it's a new regime but I
- 2:02:52just I'm just taking. I'm taking the under.
- 2:02:55I got us at six and six. You know, 50/50, but I just NC
- 2:03:01State the Miami game. Even do q&c and Georgia Tech.
- 2:03:06Even those games worry me, you just never know, like Coastal
- 2:03:10chaos, it just never ever know it's complete toss-up, but if
- 2:03:15we, if we can start the season 3 and 0 and we start the season 3
- 2:03:19and 0, we get that BC. When I could see his winning
- 2:03:21seven games for right now, I am taking the under who who, who
- 2:03:25Who's Got BC guy coming back. Huda coming back at quarterback.
- 2:03:29Your guy who burned? Yeah, the guy burned us last
- 2:03:32year the second string. Get filled your kovich or
- 2:03:37whatever. Who made us look stupid.
- 2:03:39Yeah, I mean yeah not how I was playing with a broken hand last
- 2:03:44year and still get dvorak's. Yeah.
- 2:03:49All tactile Tech needs to do is when literally three games in
- 2:03:54September September and October total three games.
- 2:03:57Because there they should go undefeated in November, right?
- 2:04:02Like okay, closing stretches, Georgia, Tech Duke, Liberty
- 2:04:05Virginia. The best team there is probably
- 2:04:08UVA and Liberty, but Liberty lost a lot.
- 2:04:11I mean, Georgia Tech and do or they can have five wins between
- 2:04:14the two of them maybe not, right.
- 2:04:16So I mean you could go for a now and November literally win three
- 2:04:20games. The first two months, you should
- 2:04:22hit 70, you know. I understand Grayson's paying
- 2:04:24because he would Grayson, I'm a therapist you guys I'm lights.
- 2:04:27The next problem. That's why don't blame Greece
- 2:04:32him because I did it because I know what Grace is going through
- 2:04:36because I told people man after I sat in that rainstorm, we gave
- 2:04:40that game away to Cincinnati in the Military Bowl.
- 2:04:43I could I was I was never coming back, I was a scorned lover.
- 2:04:47I sat there with what you if you ever had wet socks and I was
- 2:04:51there, my whole family. I was told you, I'm too big to
- 2:04:53be that stove, bro. And I was like, yo, I'm done.
- 2:04:57We gave the game away. I am excited about the game
- 2:05:11because we're going to know out the gate.
- 2:05:14What kind of team we got? Obviously teams need to get
- 2:05:16better to get worse so I don't want to make too much of.
- 2:05:19We went 45 to 10, I don't want to get carried away because we
- 2:05:22got some things to be talking about playoff runs, but if we
- 2:05:25look confident and we're in tents, and Flying around.
- 2:05:28I'm going to be and when that gang I'll take it, I'm gonna
- 2:05:32jump in here real quick because I like I like Dwight's point.
- 2:05:35I like Grayson's point. I like the things that make said
- 2:05:38as well but where I'm going is kind of a little bit of what
- 2:05:42Dwight said a little bit, what Grayson said.
- 2:05:44So and kind of going back to what, Dwight's?
- 2:05:46The previous question, take care of the winnable game.
- 2:05:49So we've got in theory, six, winnable games on our schedule.
- 2:05:52Yep, very winnable games. So, if we can take care of those
- 2:05:57Those. And then, as John said, steal
- 2:06:00one or two, that gives us the over.
- 2:06:02So, my hope, my heart's in, I think we can get the over.
- 2:06:06Now, my mind saying, is that if we're not undefeated or close to
- 2:06:10it getting to October, it could get a rough stretch for a while
- 2:06:16there, and we need to see how we respond to that adversity going
- 2:06:21into those winnable matchups down the stretch.
- 2:06:24We don't want to let games in October, dictate how?
- 2:06:27How we play, and how we respond to these more winnable games
- 2:06:31that are coming in November? Yeah, I'm going to just stick it
- 2:06:35at this. I'm over six and a half.
- 2:06:38That's it. I'm over six and a half.
- 2:06:40I hope in a couple weeks here. Me and Brian are gonna be doing
- 2:06:43a preview Brian. A few weeks ago, told me he was
- 2:06:47going to be under. So y'all are clearly changing
- 2:06:50this man's mind about what he thinks this season is going to
- 2:06:53be, I'm over right now because it is, some optimism is thinking
- 2:06:59about I just keep looking at games last year that were that
- 2:07:03close and we're better at the quarterback position.
- 2:07:06We downgraded it wider. Receiver, we've upgraded it
- 2:07:09offensive line coach. We have a lot of cord defense
- 2:07:12coming back. And you're going to a scheme,
- 2:07:17say what you will, this is a scheme, these players were
- 2:07:21recruited for this is a scheme. These players were recruited for
- 2:07:27no, knock on J Hamm, but we were trying to do some different
- 2:07:29things that's going to be a big piece that the systems with
- 2:07:35these guys are supposed to play in because it's would buds crew.
- 2:07:38All right, we're going to make one quick announcement.
- 2:07:40We're going to wrap it up here. Starting two weeks from Night
- 2:07:45the boundary Corner podcast is going to start coming live to
- 2:07:48you guys on Tuesday nights, 9:30.
- 2:07:51Not Wednesday only going to be doing it once a week.
- 2:07:56Me and the big guy here, our professional lives have been
- 2:08:02very successful the last couple of years, and we've gotten some
- 2:08:05additional responsibilities with that work.
- 2:08:08So it's kind of tough with families to pull two nights a
- 2:08:11week to pull multiple hours away.
- 2:08:14Way. So one night a week, two weeks
- 2:08:16from tonight, when we start, that might see us Flex from
