- 0:33We love Welcome to this week's episode of anime club Dirty Old
- 0:40Art Classroom, where every week we meet and we talk about our
- 0:43favorite anime series and films. And sometimes they're not our
- 0:47favorite. Sometimes we're seeing them for
- 0:48the first time and we don't know what's going to happen.
- 0:50Speaking of which, this week we haven't a very, very special
- 0:54guest. The man himself behind the
- 0:59behind that other guy, I was going to say behind the lovely
- 1:03community that is nerdy up north we have with us, Paul.
- 1:09I was just going to sit there and not move and just pretend it
- 1:11would be frozen just to see how long it took.
- 1:13Christopher. I would have dubbed you saying
- 1:16something about this. And of course have our lovely Co
- 1:20host Chris. And because it's your first time
- 1:25on Anime Club Paul, we ask everyone this question and it's
- 1:30but I appreciate that anime is not your normal like groove.
- 1:33It's not your normal sweet spot where you hang out.
- 1:35So you've very specially agreed to watch some anime with us
- 1:40coming into it. But have you seen?
- 1:42So what's your gateway anime? Have you seen anime before?
- 1:44What's your previous experience coming into this?
- 1:47The story of me joining this this amazing show is Chris said
- 1:51he's got footage of me that he's going to release to the world if
- 1:54I didn't come on this show. So he is a little he is a little
- 2:00spice monkey as well. So I actually believe him that
- 2:03he he would do something as odious and as sinister as that
- 2:07because he hears the bad boy of nerdy up north and his little
- 2:11partnership with that cretin that we called dangerous dog,
- 2:14dog headed Lee. That's called my dog.
- 2:16I don't know why now, but yes, I have watched anime in the past.
- 2:21I remember being a small child and Channel 4 used to showcase
- 2:26some of the the weird and wonderful used to be like a one
- 2:30half one 2:00 in the morning and showing these weird things like
- 2:33devil man and stuff like that. So where basically a man was
- 2:37possessed with a a devil demon and destroyed the world.
- 2:41It was quite interesting. I think that was called Devil
- 2:43man. Could be wrong devil.
- 2:45Man cried baby. Possibly, but it was a very long
- 2:49time ago. But yeah, I have Dip me tour.
- 2:51We have got members of the nerdy Up North community that has
- 2:54begged and played it for me to watch anime.
- 2:57The lovely donner of Sunny Club. Sunny Con Sunny Club get a
- 3:01trademark donor. Sunny Con.
- 3:04Quick Chris, let's set up Sunny club.
- 3:08But yeah, we we did an episode on, I believe it was Spirited
- 3:11Away last year. That was probably some first
- 3:16foray in the Studio Ghibli and I enjoyed it.
- 3:19Yeah, it wasn't what what I was expecting.
- 3:22It was very much different. It was, again, it's different
- 3:25because when you watch it with the English dub and the book,
- 3:30maybe me, I put the subtitles on, the subtitles in the dub
- 3:33wasn't quite the same. So it was quite interesting to
- 3:35see how the transition or the transition trans.
- 3:41I can't give you words. You can tell I've been to work
- 3:43today. It's it's different to basically
- 3:47the different formats or different things.
- 3:48So you don't know if you're getting the true story or the
- 3:50true meaning, which we'll talk about in in this this amazing
- 3:54movie today. But yes, that was my little
- 3:57foray into it. I do.
- 3:59I'm not going to say I'm never going to watch anime.
- 4:00I'm going to think, to be fair, I just normally say stuff to
- 4:03piss Chris off mostly. So it's just my little things
- 4:05that kind of irritate me with it.
- 4:07Well, no. And I actually.
- 4:08Watched it though, so you've made us happy even if you don't
- 4:12like it. Yeah, yeah, the fact.
- 4:14That oh, I kind of care because because when we do podcasts on
- 4:18like nerdy up north on the Sunday, I like to keep
- 4:20everything fresh, not have anything said.
- 4:22Don't know anything going to complete bad.
- 4:24These two little knuckle draggers here has just been
- 4:27Mexican. What did you think?
- 4:28Why did you think? Did you like it?
- 4:33We have a little chat. Chris and I are very, very
- 4:35collaborative in the way that we work.
- 4:39We just like talking to each other.
- 4:42There's that and we genuinely want to talk about it because
- 4:47sometimes we'll each mention a point that we're like, I didn't
- 4:51think about that. Actually, I'll mention it while
- 4:53we're on later. And also I, I do think genuinely
- 4:58that this podcast is inconsequential.
- 5:00Even if we weren't recording, we would still be talking about
- 5:03anime because that's how we started doing this podcast since
- 5:06we were doing it anyway. But yeah, I'll give the spoiler
- 5:09out now, so I'll take this out of your and Tessa.
- 5:13Sandwich. Yes, I I really enjoyed this.
- 5:19I thought it was like I just so interesting, so different.
- 5:24I went in because I know we'll talk about it a bit more, but
- 5:27like the animation style and the way it looks, this feels like
- 5:30it's going to be like like almost like a like a fairy tale
- 5:34and a story. And then it goes into quite
- 5:37adult themes, like how brutal it is, like some of the like fight
- 5:41scenes and stuff you don't see coming.
- 5:44Like I was literally taken aback and nearly fell off the bed at
- 5:47one point when like one of the made like the first fight fight
- 5:51scenes with the samurai I was like oh shit this this is real
- 5:54it. It's really, it's really brutal
- 5:56and I would say so it's we're doing Princess Mononoke I think.
- 5:59I don't think we actually said the title, but it's on the
- 6:01screen so people can figure it out.
- 6:03And I would always say that this is the one like one of the
- 6:07studio Jibby films that is not for kids.
- 6:11Like wait until your kids are like teenagers before you like
- 6:14introduce them to this don't like show.
- 6:16This isn't My neighbor Totoro. It's not even a Spirited away.
- 6:21I don't think you can show little kids this anime.
- 6:23It's it's it's cut me out if I had been a four year old.
- 6:28But it's done the way it's like brutal but cutesy at the same
- 6:31time. But again, I think the message
- 6:33like, especially towards like not not the very end, but
- 6:37towards the end, it's quite beautiful.
- 6:38And yeah, it makes you think about certain things in
- 6:41different ways and say like how life works.
- 6:43And it's it's not all shiny and nice and everything's got a time
- 6:49and a place. So it's kind of like realising
- 6:51that as well. So it was, it was, it was, it
- 6:54was quite a sweet story. But, and I am going to apologise
- 6:58now, I will butcher the names. So I'm not even trying to answer
- 7:01that. It's.
- 7:01OK, Chris and I frequently have to have a cast lists up in order
- 7:06to remember names. That's perfectly fine.
- 7:08But before we dive into more into the anime, a very important
- 7:11part of Anime Club every week is what's snacks you got?
- 7:14What's snacks you got? What are you guys munching?
- 7:17So I'm going to, I'm really pleased with this month's like
- 7:20I've just picked all my favorite things and put them on a fancy
- 7:23little plate. But I've got some macaroons now.
- 7:27You're going to take the North and South.
- 7:29Divide the North and South divide.
- 7:33We've got macaroons with Phoebe and what have you got with
- 7:35Chris? Yeah, yeah.
- 7:37Right. So it's Nike.
- 7:40Nike what, 7 or 6? This was out and I thought what
- 7:44would I be eating at the pictures or watching a film on
- 7:46the silver at that time. So got a tiny little bowl full
- 7:49of Maltesers, M&M's and Milky Way Magic Stars also mean all.
- 7:56Magic stars back in the back in the deer.
- 7:59Yeah, we do definitely have magic stars.
- 8:01I don't think we did. And I'm just going and I'm a
- 8:04bitch with me Pringles. Because they all had little
- 8:06stories on the back of a packet. I can remember being a kid and
- 8:09reading them. We definitely had magic stars as
- 8:12kids. I'm going to say yes, that much
- 8:15older than me. You're older than me.
- 8:17I'm the baby. I'm the baby excellent and we've
- 8:27got Pringles from Paul and you've got to do classic duck
- 8:29lips pouting and selfie pouting before selfies were a thing
- 8:35with. Pringles, are you ever made that
- 8:37circle thing before? Oh.
- 8:41You see that where you pile them all on top of each other, keep
- 8:43going round and you make a circle.
- 8:46I'm not trying. Really clever.
- 8:48I've seen people do it like out of the packet, so they're like
- 8:52able to like distribute it straight out of very clever and.
- 8:56They'll tell me much cash now that was a mistake.
- 8:59I can't really Pringle dust. These are These are really good
- 9:03but also hard to talk around, so we've all made.
- 9:07Fun of macaroons. Macaroons.
- 9:10I love them. I love them so much.
- 9:13They make me feel, hey, I like how tiny they are so they make
- 9:17me feel like a giant. We all know I love tiny things
- 9:19because I like to feel enormous and powerful.
- 9:22Is that why you get on with Chris so much?
- 9:24Yeah, Chris makes me so powerful.
- 9:29Look at him trying to be bigger and things.
- 9:31That's why he's put me tiny on the screen and said I'm going to
- 9:33be more enforceable and bigger than Paul.
- 9:36It's just I've. Met you both in life.
- 9:38This seems about right, but it was very far down so it was hard
- 9:41for me to say. That's what she said.
- 9:48But yes. Right, but back into the film.
- 9:51So how would you guys describe Princess Mononoke to someone
- 9:54who's never seen an anime or never seen this film before?
- 9:58A Japanese version of The Jungle Book, you think?
- 10:02I think that does it a disservice.
- 10:03I think it's better than The Jungle Book Contra, but there
- 10:08are it's more like the original, like Rodger Kipling version of
- 10:12The Jungle Book. It's more brutal than like the
- 10:14Disney version. No, no, I still like, I'm a big
- 10:17Jungle Book fan, so again, I'm not.
- 10:19I would never say it's a disservice.
- 10:21I think this this same kind of beats, it's like like like
- 10:28certainly different cultures, different times, but there's
- 10:31like a human that's been brought up by wolves and again, Mowgli
- 10:36was brought up by wolves and trying to find the humanity in
- 10:40them without losing it and then man overstretching their
- 10:46boundaries and kind of take them through.
- 10:47So I think there's a lot of similar boot beats to it.
- 10:51Again, I know it's probably more of a simpler term, but I've got
- 10:56loads of Jungle Book vibes from watching it like last night
- 11:00again. But that's because I'm a, I'm a,
- 11:03I'm a Disney fan as well still. Yeah, but you're right, it is
- 11:07because Mowgli like, and that's what I mean in the in the book
- 11:10you have a lot more of that like tension between man and nature,
- 11:14whereas in the Disney film it's mostly just him trying to get
- 11:17back to the humans. Oh, I'm the king of the swingers
- 11:20there, jungle. Be happy.
- 11:23I have heard that about you, Paul.
- 11:26Somewhere else at Pompous Cross and he's Gordon.
- 11:31That's why I've always got the Velcro.
- 11:36I don't even know how that would be used and I'm afraid to ask.
- 11:39So, moving swiftly on, how would you describe it?
- 11:42See, normally when I describe things, compare it to something
- 11:45that normally people are familiar with.
- 11:49And I don't think I can because I think it's entirely its own
- 11:52entity and it's its style, the storytelling way and kind of the
- 11:57messages as well. Because like for it's time, I
- 12:00mean, there's no like villain in it.
- 12:02Like everyone's good aren't evil and the hunt.
- 12:06The hunt is a bit of a twat I don't like.
- 12:08Yeah, but I think, I think he was just a mouthpiece for the
- 12:12for the emperor really, because he was all just like, well, I've
- 12:15got these orders, I've got to do it.
- 12:17I'm he was a Dick. I didn't like him, but also, do
- 12:23you know his voice for Billy Bob Thornton, the English one?
- 12:26Yeah. Yeah.
- 12:27I didn't. Know it till just now I just
- 12:30thought. I love and, and this is the
- 12:33thing about Studio Ghibli when they do the localisation.
- 12:37So we talked a bit when Jake came on about Subs versus dubs
- 12:40and how if you're going to watch the dubbed version, it's
- 12:43important that you watch a good dubbed version because some
- 12:46animes don't get it right and some animes nail it.
- 12:49Studio Ghibli, I think because they do have that kind of status
- 12:52in the industry of being like the powerhouse anime studio.
- 12:57They always manage to get amazing.
- 12:59So they've had like, Patrick Stewart is in Nausicaa Valley of
- 13:02the Wind. You've got Christian Bale is in
- 13:06House Moving Castle along with it's not, I'm going to say I
- 13:12think it's Gene Simmons. And but it's not the Gene
- 13:14Simmons from like, Kiss. It's like, you know, the female
- 13:18actress Gene Simmons, she plays so this Grandma Sophie as well
- 13:21in House Moving Castle. She's brilliant.
- 13:24Yeah. And then you have Billy Bob
- 13:25Thornton as the hunter. Anderson as well.
- 13:29Gillian Anderson Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:30It's good. Like you get good voice, you get
- 13:32good acting in. But you're right, Paul, there
- 13:36isn't always going to be a difference.
- 13:37So with the films, the subtitles are closer to what the original
- 13:42Japanese would be. Yeah.
- 13:45And what you get is like a mismatch where you can see that
- 13:48whoever's done the localisation. There wasn't as bad in this one
- 13:52compared to spiritual. Yeah, Spirits aware was huge
- 13:56like like slot the plot I was reading, I was good.
- 13:58That's different, totally different than saying this one.
- 14:01There was little terms or little things in way around they were
- 14:04saying. I know we were talking before we
- 14:06went live about the transition from he should who should not be
- 14:11named change in certain aspects around and stuff like that, but
- 14:16in in spirit aware there was whole context and conversation
- 14:22that was changed and like I was like sitting there scratching my
- 14:24head, even rewind bits going that's that changes this whole
- 14:29saying when this wasn't that bad.
- 14:31It was just like words were in different orders or it was said
- 14:34something like it was like, Hey, you stop and then it was like
- 14:36sends me out. So it was like censoring then
- 14:38saying stop. So it's kind of I think it's
- 14:40just maybe like again round about how it works in the
- 14:44dialect where it was made. I think the spirit of the.
- 14:48Way. There's a lot of like or claw in
- 14:50it which a Western audience wouldn't be able to recognise
- 14:54from looking at it or naming it, so they have to do workarounds a
- 14:58lot with that. I know I'm seeing a lot of
- 15:00excuses, but that could be an answer for some of it.
- 15:04Yeah, I do think that is part of the some of the localisation
- 15:08inspirational way you get a lot of this like the Shinto belief,
- 15:12like everything has a spirit and in this you see a little bit of
- 15:16that in terms of how particularly how the forest
- 15:21creatures are there. I'll.
- 15:22Just say if I can spin my head round.
- 15:24Yeah, yeah. And the idea of having like all
- 15:27these different gods who are of the forest and of nature.
- 15:31I love that aspect again, if you can build on that legend.
- 15:35The only thing again, this is not me saying the disservice.
- 15:38This felt like a Part 1 when this ended and stuff there
- 15:43wasn't like a a true like ending time.
- 15:46He said like and I like that there wasn't any like didn't,
- 15:49wasn't too worried about a. Nice neat role.
- 15:52No, yeah. It was like, it's like life.
- 15:55Nothing ever goes the way and ends the way a certain way.
- 15:57So it's kind of like quite refreshing they got that way to
- 16:00get all we're not kind of finalizing anything.
- 16:02But can I just say as well, I don't know what I can't remember
- 16:05it's name now, but if any, like if, if they killed the the deer,
- 16:11I might she would have went through the window.
- 16:15I you mean you? Mean the deer that he rides on?
- 16:17Or do you mean the forest God? The deer?
- 16:19Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I couldn't.
- 16:21Give you the animal companion. That's yeah.
- 16:24He was he was beautiful and he's little like his little
- 16:28friendship as well. And like how he was like, oh,
- 16:30you stared. He's like, no, no, didn't have
- 16:32to speak, but you could tell and his own little personality as
- 16:36well. And when he got shot in the leg,
- 16:38I was like heartbroken. I was like, don't you dare
- 16:40because this, as you said, this is brutal.
- 16:42You thought things were going to happen and bad things were going
- 16:45to happen in this as well, especially when we get to the
- 16:48end bits and stuff. But I was just like, don't you
- 16:51dare even think about hurting this little beautiful beast
- 16:54here. And I think this one of the
- 16:57reasons I remember watching this for the first time and the first
- 16:59Studio Ghibli film I did I watched was Spirited Away and I
- 17:03watched it with my family and I thought, oh, this is a lovely
- 17:06studio that do nice sweet fairy tales and called.
- 17:10Fireflies are next. And called Johnny Oaklaw.
- 17:14And then this was the next one I watched and I was like, Oh no,
- 17:18these are very different films. But, and the opening scene for
- 17:22this is the like one of the boar gods from the forest who has
- 17:31been killed by like an iron shot and a curse.
- 17:36A a curse of hatred has fallen upon him and he is become this
- 17:40like monstrous thing who's like just carving his way through the
- 17:43forest. And they're having to like like
- 17:45immediately it starts with fighting and blood and a guy
- 17:48getting like a horrible like wound.
- 17:50The Prince gets a horrible wound on his arm that he then has to
- 17:53like. He's exiled from his tribe as a
- 17:55result. The exiled was like, oh, it's
- 17:59like you've saved us, thank you, you've been cursed, now fuck
- 18:02off. Yeah, you have.
- 18:04You kind of, you feel that kind of sense of loss for him as well
- 18:08because it's like he's been exiled from a tribe who
- 18:11themselves are exiles. Like how low does one guy have
- 18:15to go before he can kind of sort like basically save the world?
- 18:20Like, it's really tough, but yeah, really.
- 18:24Excited. I love it.
- 18:26Yeah, I got really excited with the start how they built up like
- 18:29the whole demon. I was like, oh, there's going to
- 18:31be loads of demons and stuff like that.
- 18:33And not saying it was let down, but there wasn't like more
- 18:37demons or like, I know we got to say gods, but they weren't doing
- 18:40like God forms, like almost like just giant beasts of him till we
- 18:43got like the the the forest spirit, which we got a multitude
- 18:48of different viewpoints or different like characters,
- 18:52almost like different, different things for the spirit gods,
- 18:55which again, was done really well.
- 18:57But that was where you thought it looked strange, especially
- 18:59when it looked in his face and it was like that.
- 19:01But anyway. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:04Kind of human, but kind of like very uncanny valley kind of.
- 19:08Yeah, but I wanted more of the demon side I was getting.
- 19:13This is really interesting, quite I.
- 19:16Thought there wasn't any demons because I thought that none of
- 19:21the people in this, no matter through the actions or portrayed
- 19:24as necessarily absolute evil, absolute good.
- 19:28So to have demons in it would be evil.
- 19:32So I mean, you could make the point that the the Iron City
- 19:37people were evil or the sight of the forest people were at the
- 19:44forest, animals were evil because they they're taking
- 19:47lives away, they're killing the humans, all that kind of stuff.
- 19:50But I think the only the bad thing, what a scary demon thing
- 19:55was, was them fucking baboons. Yeah, but even then, they're not
- 20:01evil because they're in the dark.
- 20:05They are dark. And that's one of the so one of
- 20:07the next questions was going to be what, what character would
- 20:10you least want to encounter in a dark forest at night?
- 20:13But before I ask, that is for me it's 100% those apes.
- 20:17But even then they are like trying to recount the forest and
- 20:20man keep ripping up the trees and they're trying to maintain
- 20:23their home. And what they want isn't to to
- 20:26destroy man, it's to save their home.
- 20:29But that in order to do that, they want to eat the eat the
- 20:32Prince to gain his strength. Dark, dark and creepy.
- 20:36And I think this film is interesting because it gives you
- 20:39action very quickly. But you're right, Paul, then you
- 20:42don't get action for a while. What you get is like him
- 20:45journeying and trying to understand what's happening.
- 20:49So then the next time you get action is when you see the
- 20:51wolves coming to attack Iron Town, and you of course have the
- 20:58introduction of Princess Mononoke herself, who is this
- 21:02figure who the people believe that she has had her spirit
- 21:05stolen by the wolves. The wolves have actually kind of
- 21:09raised her and she sees them as her family.
- 21:13And she's this kind of bridge between humanity and the natural
- 21:16world. And it's.
- 21:18Yeah. And so then you see, and her,
- 21:19like the scenes, like her first scene, she's like, covered in
- 21:23blood, freaking out people's throats.
- 21:26Like it's. Just something on the it's just
- 21:28something on the the wolf's wound as well.
- 21:30That's the thing when he acted the girl.
- 21:32Trying to get the trying to get the poison out like it is, like
- 21:35even the moments of like hair and healing are a little bit
- 21:39violent. It's like nature red and tooth
- 21:42and claw. If I'm allowed to like, quote
- 21:44some I can't remember, it's Byron or George Bernard Shaw who
- 21:48said that, but one of the poets. Oh yeah, there you.
- 21:52Bring a bit of class to the podcast there Phoebes, Well
- 21:54done. We live and try, but yeah.
- 21:59So, yeah, what would? But what about you put like,
- 22:01what Paul? What what spirit would you least
- 22:03want to encounter in a dark forest or what character?
- 22:06It might not be one of the spirits.
- 22:07You might not want to meet one of the people.
- 22:10And the thing that spooked us, like Chris said, as Chris said
- 22:13that the apes were horrifying, especially when you're first
- 22:16encountering with the red eyes and the dark, but then later on
- 22:20when you see them in the forest, it kind of softens them a little
- 22:23bit as well. So it's kind of like you're
- 22:25like, oh, well, the thing that freaked me out is what is the
- 22:27hunters dressed as the dead bars, like the dead eyes and
- 22:31like flying like like almost like they were flying about just
- 22:34to get the heat. But but yeah, because that was
- 22:38the one thing again. So to jump on this just because
- 22:40with you saying it, one thing I mentioned the start was I've I
- 22:45really thought this was going to film about demons, but it
- 22:47wasn't. It was more about like almost
- 22:51like the demon wasn't like a, like a demon demon from hell.
- 22:54It was like an infection that was brought on by hate.
- 22:57And the more that the hate spread, the infection kind of
- 23:01took hold. And I thought it was quite
- 23:03interesting when like you saw his arm not going to try and
- 23:10pronounce his name and Prince Prince it start taking shape and
- 23:16groan and like every time he was getting a little bit angry or
- 23:19hateful, like it would come alive.
- 23:22And that was quite nerve wracking because it wasn't just
- 23:26like seeing the spread of the the colour like a bruise, it was
- 23:29the fact that it was almost like his whole arm became like
- 23:34elastic and elastic manner as well.
- 23:36So that was interesting. It become it's like a distort
- 23:39and I think this is because it is about I think ultimately
- 23:44there like there isn't a bad guy, but the like the force to
- 23:48be fought against is like hatred and imbalance in particular.
- 23:53So this idea of like going too far into one one thing because
- 23:58they it because they also like explore like this relationship
- 24:02with that the wolves have to being hunters and protectors and
- 24:07are needing to hunt and needing violence in order to survive.
- 24:11And they explore like that. And there is a marked
- 24:14distinction between hunting versus like a vendetta.
- 24:21And I think the the Iron Town have a vendetta against the
- 24:24wolves. The Wolves have a vendetta
- 24:26against. I think it's lack of
- 24:28communication at the sit at the end well.
- 24:31And I think it's the eighth thing I think is interesting
- 24:33because you get like they're they're this really sinister
- 24:36presence to begin with. But then as you come to
- 24:38understand what's motivating them and as you come to
- 24:41understand the forest, you see them in their kind of true self.
- 24:45And the whole, the whole thing that the whole like point of the
- 24:49Prince, as he says most like a lot of the time that he's just
- 24:52coming to try and see with eyes that are like unclouded by hate.
- 24:56So he's just trying to see things as they are.
- 24:58He's not trying to like, he's just trying to understand stuff.
- 25:01That's his mission. It isn't to like try and sway
- 25:04people one way or the other. He just wants people to
- 25:06understand each other. And I think that isn't something
- 25:09that you don't see in a lot of films and you should have in
- 25:11more films. I think it's a really beautiful
- 25:14truth. I am.
- 25:16No, no. You've said it perfectly that
- 25:18it's interesting though. There's two movies I've watched
- 25:20this week and two movies that's had a profound effect on us.
- 25:23Like, I know it sounds cheesy. I went to see Superman at the
- 25:27weekend and it brought me to tears.
- 25:30But the whole story with that movie is all about kindness,
- 25:34human acceptance and moves on. And again, almost this movie as
- 25:38well, it has the same beats. It's about hope, acceptance,
- 25:42kindness, like people being like Princess Manonoco being a human
- 25:49in the forest brought up by wolves.
- 25:52It's almost Apparel's like Clark Kent is an alien being brought
- 25:56up by humans and he's ostracized by a lot of the human world
- 26:01because they still see him as an alien.
- 26:03And it's like the same type of thing.
- 26:06So 1997 has still got the same type of like vibe and stuff that
- 26:12movies in 2025 is still capturing as well.
- 26:14So just it just it was again, totally by chance and totally by
- 26:20accident that like I say, that did happen.
- 26:22But I kind of got similar vibes from both films.
- 26:25Totally different premises, totally different storylines,
- 26:28totally different ways of doing it.
- 26:30But kindness is is the main thing that kind of shone through
- 26:33on both these movies. And I do think it's, it is.
- 26:37I think it's very true. I was watching something about
- 26:42how how do you talk to people who like so say if like so is it
- 26:49was about it was about actually about how do you talk to people
- 26:52about trans issues if they're coming to the conversation
- 26:57already decided that they're going to hate you.
- 26:59And one of the advocates were saying, The thing is, most
- 27:02people who have decided that they don't like trans people
- 27:05have never actually met someone who's trans.
- 27:07So the best thing you can do is just to show up and be
- 27:09understanding and try and be understood.
- 27:12And I think there is that thing in this film of it's very
- 27:15difficult to hate the things that you understand.
- 27:18And that's one of the reasons why none of the characters are
- 27:20villains, as you were saying, Chris, because it's like it
- 27:25gives you time to understand what's behind characters, what
- 27:29motivation. And and that leaves the audience
- 27:32in a kind of like like ambiguous quandary where you just want
- 27:36everyone to get along like you need, you want you want them to
- 27:40find a way through it. And you don't actually want one
- 27:44side to lose or one side to win. You want them to all figure it
- 27:47out. And I think that's kind of
- 27:48magical. It's also like just we talked
- 27:51about actors and I've just got it up because I wanted to check
- 27:53what the prince's name was. But Mini Driver Lady Uboshi,
- 27:58Claire Danes as Sam as as Princess Mononoke.
- 28:04Billy Colton as Yeah. Billy Colton as the Prince as
- 28:08well, wasn't he? Yeah.
- 28:09Yeah, yeah, it's truly a gorgeous cast.
- 28:14You will enjoy like you will enjoy it in the dub I think if
- 28:16you if you're not a sub watcher. I'll watch, I'll watch the sub
- 28:21this time. I've never seen a dub.
- 28:23That's why I was shocked by Gillian Anderson.
- 28:25It makes sense. So because son was calling the
- 28:29the wolf mother, but he's voiced by by a bloke in the Japanese
- 28:34dub. So I was like.
- 28:36That's weird, yeah. I mean.
- 28:39Yeah, yeah. One of the things.
- 28:41I wanted you to speak during the night so I could bite your head
- 28:44off. Mother has it has a different
- 28:48tone. Yeah.
- 28:50What did you take? Because.
- 28:51Because I'm conscious that we've taken Chris recently on a
- 28:54journey back into vintage anime, having watched some like really
- 28:59slick new anime. How do you feel like it's held
- 29:01up? Because Paul was saying like
- 29:03thematically, you're right, it is very, it feels very 2025 in
- 29:06the conversation that it's having in that it kind of
- 29:09matches the Superman energy animation wise.
- 29:12What did you think? Obviously amazing.
- 29:16I know they're getting the it's getting a 4K release in the
- 29:20pictures in August the 15th in the UK.
- 29:24I would. Like to see you put that in the
- 29:26discord and I got very excited. I know I was like, where's the
- 29:29nearest 4K? London, OK.
- 29:33No, that was the IMAX I think, but it's still being 4 Ki think
- 29:36there is 4K cinemas around. It's just the IMAX is the bigger
- 29:40screen. But the ones, because the ones
- 29:43that claim to be IMAX are just like half IMAX is like the
- 29:45Gateshead ones, like half the size is what it's meant to be.
- 29:49Right. Either way, I still I've never
- 29:52seen anime in the big screen and I would love to go and see see
- 29:56something like this. Yeah, I think it's held up
- 30:00amazingly because it's it's Ghibli or Ghibli style, isn't
- 30:04it? Which is kind of like, I don't
- 30:08think it's outdated. No, no, I agree totally.
- 30:14It's very much of late 80s nineties animation style that
- 30:19was big and a lot of cartoons and like try to replicate like I
- 30:24think there was like, oh, I forgot what was now like the
- 30:29Golden City or something like that used to be on years ago.
- 30:32And the one where these cars that turn into like like plants
- 30:37and stuff that used to be always chasing after the father and
- 30:40stuff. I'm talking swing wheels.
- 30:42Rug trip? What is this?
- 30:44Film. I'll share the I'll share the
- 30:46videos that it is. So yeah, I've not heard of this
- 30:49before. Fever dream.
- 30:52It definitely was used to be on Channel 4 before I went to
- 30:54school, but the art style, but I think what gets more beautiful,
- 30:59it's not what's in close up, It's the stuff that's in the
- 31:03background that gets you like things that's around and kind of
- 31:07things like everything is so polished.
- 31:09Like people can say, oh, the like the drawings of the people
- 31:12like not to do it down, but the face of the facial expressions
- 31:15and stuff is isn't like like that detailed, but everything
- 31:20around it is like even like the I'm going to try and pronounce
- 31:24the Kodama and these are all Sprite things like the guides.
- 31:30They look initially like all they've just been drawn crudely,
- 31:34but to see them around and Chris had the perfect explanation of
- 31:39one last night when he described described as Finley leaving the
- 31:43bath and running up the run away.
- 31:45It's it is like a like a innocent child.
- 31:47You have, like, mischievous children energy.
- 31:49Yeah. Yeah, And it's something just
- 31:51really adorable and like, there's that much care and
- 31:54moving in. And even when, like, like, the
- 31:57forest spirit loses his head and goes nuclear, like, even that is
- 32:01terrifying, but beautifully done.
- 32:03How it's all engulfing in hall enveloping and it's not just the
- 32:08like the little thing, it's not like the big things that you can
- 32:10say, it's the little things. How the tones and things are
- 32:14starting to wilt and change and it's just the date, like the cat
- 32:18and detail is just amazing. Yeah, and I agree entirely.
- 32:22The backgrounds are, I think the backgrounds in Studio Ghibli are
- 32:26a signature and they do they, they make everything feel like,
- 32:31and I when I say fairy tale, I don't mean like a kind of hangs
- 32:34Christian Anderson kind of fairy tale.
- 32:36I mean like fairy tales before the Christians got here, like
- 32:40the dark ones where you get fairies, like kidnapping babies,
- 32:43like those kind of like really grippy ones.
- 32:46And the and the level of detail that you get in in a Studio
- 32:49Ghibli background, it's always going to be stunning.
- 32:52I think I've read before. As well.
- 32:54Yeah, I think I've read before like this was one of the
- 32:57biggest, like most expensive movie that the studio would ever
- 33:00made. And, and I'm not going to even
- 33:04try and pronounce his name. Sorry.
- 33:05The guy who does it all was just laughing, saying I don't, Yeah,
- 33:08I don't care if if the studio goes out of business, this is
- 33:11where I want to make it. That's that one single mind is
- 33:17this to go fuck everyone else, fuck the establishment.
- 33:19This is my vision. And I this is this is the film
- 33:23that really kind of establishes Miyazaki as a powerhouse in the
- 33:27industry. It's also a film in where he
- 33:31took a lot of stands about how it was not only going to be
- 33:34made, but how it was going to be shared globally.
- 33:38Because that was something that you were saying, Chris, wasn't
- 33:40it about the, I can't remember now what was it the when it was
- 33:45going to go to America and they wanted to cut out bits of it?
- 33:49Oh yeah, he said. It was, it was Weinstein.
- 33:52Weinstein, Yeah. And wanted to cut loads.
- 33:55Another reason to hate the guy is if you didn't have enough.
- 33:57Already he thought for a resting audience it was too slow pace
- 34:01where there's too many like establishing shots and all that.
- 34:04So he wanted them all cut down and he didn't want a 2 hour
- 34:07length And I think he's like he sent him a samurai sword with no
- 34:13cuts etched into it Kept. It on which is such AI think
- 34:19such a ball away to be like if someone sends me a samurai sword
- 34:22with a message on it, I'm paying attention to the message.
- 34:25It's such a ball away to be like, no, no, you're wrong.
- 34:31And I think it would have like completely.
- 34:33It could would have completely changed the the whole pace of
- 34:37it, the whole that whole spirit of like coming to understand the
- 34:43environment, the I mean. We've seen loads of there's
- 34:48loads of stories of anime in the the 90s, eighties and even 2000s
- 34:53babies where they've come over to a Western audience and
- 34:56they've butchered it up. They've mistranslated, they're
- 34:59on purpose because they thought it would fit better with the
- 35:02audience and it turns out shit. There's always famous when the
- 35:10actual original comes here. I think the the most famous 1 is
- 35:16like one piece with the the live action.
- 35:19I would have crammed like if you watch the anime, the anime
- 35:22version like literally like the phases or the fights and stuff
- 35:27go on for like episodes and episodes and episodes and stuff
- 35:30where the with it being changed now to the live action in one
- 35:35season, the got through probably is about 600 episodes of they.
- 35:39Got through three full arcs because the Fishman story arc
- 35:44ends the first season and I think it's the third.
- 35:49This is where Jake's going to be in the live chat or something
- 35:51and he's going to be like, well, actually it's episode 62.
- 35:58Because I'm not a huge one. I'm not like anywhere close to
- 36:01being as big a One Piece fan as Jake is.
- 36:03And I'll happily give him the crown on that one.
- 36:07But yeah, but you're right, there is a kind of like a
- 36:09paciness. And I think, yeah, I wonder if
- 36:13this anime would would be made now because I think we do do
- 36:16faster storytelling than we did in the 90s.
- 36:20But I also like to think that there is still space for this.
- 36:23And even though it feels, even though there are bits where it
- 36:26is very where it does take its time and it does have those long
- 36:30establishing shots because they're so beautiful.
- 36:33Like this film, you can freeze at any moment and it's just
- 36:38beautiful. And you can watch it like it.
- 36:39Actually, you don't. I didn't get bored.
- 36:42And my attention span is out of a goldfish.
- 36:44It didn't feel like a 2 hour movie.
- 36:46That's probably the best way I can describe it.
- 36:48You can sit there and just like let it involve Pew into the
- 36:52whole aesthetics and like the atmosphere and you kind of get
- 36:56taken with the story. Well than you trying to force
- 36:59yourself to understand and there is certain aspects where you do
- 37:02feel like, oh, I've lost a little bit here, but you don't
- 37:05care. It's you're in that type of
- 37:06environment. And then when you get like such
- 37:11enriched characters as well, when you get Iron Town, like the
- 37:14people in Iron Town, it's loads of different people, but each
- 37:17one of them has got their own little personality.
- 37:18And then women that's been rescued from all the whole
- 37:22houses is just honestly some of the funnest, playfulest
- 37:27entertainment that you've seen as well.
- 37:29Like how normally you get all the lectures men, but it's the
- 37:32lectures women because they've got a new guy and he's like
- 37:34young, fit and they're like, oh, come here, I'll look after you,
- 37:38little boy. Paul's personal fantasy A load
- 37:43of a load of older women offering to look after him.
- 37:49I thought that's what Neriot and authors build on.
- 37:53Now it is and those character and so the female characters in
- 37:56this are absolutely amazing, especially for the 90s.
- 38:01Like they've like to think about like, like you're going up
- 38:05against schoolgirls and very two-dimensional cat like anime
- 38:09characters, characters like you see in JoJo where you have like
- 38:12the women are just just so weak. Like and even like Dragon Ball,
- 38:19Dragon Ball Z, like you've got one really one main female
- 38:23character. You don't get huge casts of
- 38:25women. And in this film, you've got the
- 38:28amazing Princess Mononoke. You've got Morrow the wolf in
- 38:30the English version, if not, if not the Japanese version, you
- 38:34have Lady Iboshi and her and her women and like them like
- 38:39changing all the rifles and stuff so that the women can hunt
- 38:44as well. There's like a kind of this like
- 38:47self-sufficient spirit to it as well.
- 38:50I love how. The lepers as well.
- 38:52That was an interesting. I don't think think that was
- 38:55going to pop out. But that's where, as Chris
- 38:57pointed out before, but there's no one that you think are these
- 39:00are evil. But then it's like, oh, shoot
- 39:03the the the commander, the lady lady.
- 39:10She's kind of like running the place and you think, oh, she
- 39:13must be a bitch or she must be callous, but she's not.
- 39:16She's just a woman of industry and trying to like progress.
- 39:19But then she's got a heart of gold because she treats the
- 39:21women in such high esteem. She treats like the letters like
- 39:25say, like family and looking after them, making sure they're
- 39:28all cared for. So it's, it's, as I said, it's
- 39:32just two different sides of the world coming together and not
- 39:37knowing how to deal with each other in a certain way and not
- 39:39how to coexist in a way. Yeah, for sure.
- 39:43What do you think, Chris, with the like the whole lion town
- 39:47thing? I don't know, because I think no
- 39:53one's got A1 dimensional alliance to good or evil and I
- 39:59think Iron Tone is what people, modern people would want to live
- 40:06in. I think it's a progressive
- 40:07society. Like Lady Aboshi is not the I
- 40:13think she leads the village, which is not the an
- 40:16authoritative. Like she's not like the be all
- 40:19end all dictator. Like she's said a couple of
- 40:21things and she's been questioned by what's the last called talkie
- 40:27and she's the pregnant one where she'll offer her opinion and the
- 40:32list 1 stuff like that. The care for the sick, they make
- 40:35adaptations for the disabled and people who aren't as strong say
- 40:43like the women couldn't carry the guns.
- 40:47Sorry. They don't give a fuck who the
- 40:49emperor is. That's one of my favorite bits,
- 40:51where they're like, do you know who the Emperor is?
- 40:53And I think it's Toshi who's one of the women's.
- 40:56Like who is he? Like, like what's his deal?
- 41:03Yeah. Yeah.
- 41:05So yeah, I think it's kind of like what people think a society
- 41:13should be. But then you see the evil side
- 41:16from the the other perspective where to say they were trying to
- 41:20they took out all of the land under the forest and they were
- 41:25trying to get into the mountains.
- 41:27They've killed countless amount of balls.
- 41:29Obviously the the ball God isn't happy with that and that's why
- 41:35they're at odds with each other. Yeah.
- 41:41It's interesting as well because even though this looks as, as I
- 41:46said at the start, this looks like a a nice fairy tale and
- 41:49beautifully cast and stuff. The tones and it's so dark.
- 41:53Like when the spirit God, the spirit, the forest spirit comes
- 41:58into and you think, oh, he's just going to heal everything
- 42:00and make everything right. It's it's, it's all about like
- 42:03light and dark life and death and stuff.
- 42:05So it's kind of like we had to give life at the same time
- 42:09because when the Princess is mortally wounded, protecting
- 42:13Princess Monaoki, if you can see this forest God taking away life
- 42:20from the the things in the forest to give him life.
- 42:24And then when the two massive beasts, the the wolf, the wolf
- 42:31God and the ball God, because the ball God starts getting
- 42:34possessed in almost that involves Princess Manoki into
- 42:39the the demon of hate, which was just absolutely amazingly
- 42:43shocked because he thought the Prince was going to save and he
- 42:46even he can't save her. So the wolf comes to the wolf
- 42:49God saves a deer. And then instead of a kind of
- 42:52fixing it and saying, oh, like as like as what Disney would
- 42:55have done, just put it like a glass a sheet over and went the
- 42:58back to life. Everything's all rosy and
- 43:00everything's life. It's like, no, rather than
- 43:03letting these people suffer, I'll give them a nice easy death
- 43:06and let them like go on with the forest.
- 43:08I thought that was a spectacularly done.
- 43:11Yeah, yeah. Death is death is part of this
- 43:13story, and it's unflinchingly part of this story.
- 43:18It's it's you're right, They don't do a Disney thing.
- 43:20I do think that there is something about the technology.
- 43:23So Chris, you sent through a thing saying it's what, the
- 43:26first Studio Ghibli film to use CGI And I do think it's kind of
- 43:32steps up the game for anime in general because we've so I don't
- 43:37know if you've seen our other episodes, Paul.
- 43:40So we did a film called Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika, which
- 43:44are were by an animator called Satoshi Khan.
- 43:48And in that they have very, very expressive faces.
- 43:51So you said like the figures in this are very simple, but the
- 43:53background's very lush. And in Tokyo Godfathers they
- 43:56kind of put detail into both. But it's interesting because you
- 44:01a lot of people who worked on Tokyo Godfathers, our Studio
- 44:04Ghibli kind of alumni and like experienced Studio Ghibli
- 44:09animators before they went to work with Satoshi Khan.
- 44:12And I think you can see in this film how those animators have
- 44:17learnt a new way of kind of doing a new way of storytelling
- 44:23that they're able to translate into other films.
- 44:26And how it kind of like ripples out like it does feel without
- 44:30wanting to like bigger because I, you know, all cinema
- 44:34contributes to itself and without wanting to get too wanky
- 44:37and meta, this film, you know what I mean?
- 44:39Like like like you know there are other films that influenced
- 44:43anime as well. No, no.
- 44:46It's an important 1 I think. Yeah, it's interesting you say
- 44:49that because I did do a little bit of research on this as well,
- 44:52because I'm trying to be all clever and shit. 10 minutes of
- 44:57this movie was CGI. 10 minutes, that was the whole.
- 45:01Then a lot of the stuff like was hand drawn, but then they
- 45:04started using digital colouring towards this one and this was
- 45:09the first movie, the thing. Then I think after this movie,
- 45:13that's when they start doing all the films in digital, not all
- 45:18drawn, but digital colouring they use.
- 45:20I think the term is because the hand drawn stuff was outdated,
- 45:25expensive and just took too long.
- 45:27So it was. Like the amount of man hours it
- 45:30takes. So this one, this movie is kind
- 45:34of like Revolution, but almost like it was like a little tester
- 45:38for him to say, right, we'll test the water with this aspect,
- 45:41see if it still embodies and gets my story across or doesn't
- 45:45change the aspects that I want in this movie.
- 45:48And then. But yeah, I thought that was
- 45:50quite interesting as well because you can see that with
- 45:54like most movies or like animation around this time as
- 45:58well. If you think about like early
- 46:0080s, like Disney kind of Rd. But then you had like things
- 46:03like American Tail, Anastasia, All Dogs Go to Heaven, those
- 46:10type of movies kind of getting made and changing how and you
- 46:14can then you see with CGI coming into it.
- 46:18Like then you get the 3D like Toy Story changing the game.
- 46:21So evolution of animation from all different walks of life over
- 46:26and around the world, kind of taking inspiration or learning
- 46:30from each other as well. And that's like a kid.
- 46:32I love that type of shit. Yeah, me too.
- 46:38And Chris's brush. Are you the brushing crumbs or
- 46:40being like yeah, OK, fine. So here's here's my question.
- 46:47Like thank you very much for sharing your thoughts.
- 46:50Is there do you has this one made you want to watch other
- 46:54Studio Ghibli films or other anime?
- 46:56Like has it kind of wanted to encourage you to to branch out
- 47:00more? Do you?
- 47:01Think I've always it's, it's one of the things with the stuff we
- 47:05do and the amount of time I've got, it's, it's not saying I
- 47:10don't want to spend my time in this world.
- 47:12I do want to do it. I probably won't go up your way
- 47:16to watch it, not because I'm not interested, it's just because I
- 47:19haven't got the time to do it, to be honest with you.
- 47:22But I will be more open to doing projects like coming on things
- 47:27like Anime Club or even like doing a crossover with having
- 47:30the Sunday episode where we can focus on doing like a whole wide
- 47:35variety and stuff. Just basically stealing your
- 47:37Thunder a little bit as well. But again, it's just trying to
- 47:41fit that in and put the elements in.
- 47:43Again, not all anime doesn't work.
- 47:45I've tried watching some anime and I've turned it off hot like
- 47:47within like not too long or couldn't even get through the
- 47:51first episode. I'm sorry, Dragon Ball Z isn't
- 47:54for me. This is the thing with anime.
- 47:59It's like people think anime is all like one genre.
- 48:02It isn't. It's like it's just it's a
- 48:04medium rather than. So like Christmas time,
- 48:08Christmas trying to tell us on this thing called hentai.
- 48:10I don't know what it is but he's keep that I need to try it out
- 48:13but. I'll send you some videos later.
- 48:16And, and this obsession with tentacles, I don't know what he
- 48:19keeps telling us, like, oh, this tentacle was really good or the
- 48:22really long and I don't know. Yeah.
- 48:25I don't want to know what you message each other about when
- 48:27I've gone to bed. That's just yeah, you're a siga
- 48:31dodgy. Yeah, and again, there's a lot
- 48:37of questionable stuff which, which with any type of format or
- 48:40any type of movie or any type of realms, like you could go into
- 48:45any type of like like genre and you can find stuff that you
- 48:49might make you generally feel a bit ick.
- 48:51But I think a lot of people do give anime that kind of broad
- 48:56sword thing or it's all the same thing.
- 48:58Again, it's like you have anime horror, you can have anime
- 49:03action, you can have anime comedy.
- 49:05There is a wide variety. And again, from what I've seen,
- 49:09the Studio Ghibli stuff is top tier and it's more focused on
- 49:14storylines and like interesting characters and doesn't go with
- 49:18like the normal beat. Like by the end of this movie we
- 49:22are I was like I was saying Nokia STEM 2 is going to go back
- 49:26back off into the world of human and like everything is going to
- 49:29go all rosy. No, no, that's not that's
- 49:32probably Princess Monogy is probably more has more distrust
- 49:38and dislike humans more due to what actions there.
- 49:42The humans probably have a bit more understanding towards what
- 49:45the forest brings. The Prince is a little bit more
- 49:49world wiser, but I do think he gets love sick too easy.
- 49:53It's like calm down son. Stop.
- 49:57Stop giving away your presents and stuff.
- 50:00I think there's only one lass in his village and he said she gave
- 50:03him a little sparkly dagger and then he left and he's only seen
- 50:07his family members besides that and he goes through yet the
- 50:11first lassie sees is riding a wolf and he's like, right,
- 50:14that's a going to take care rest of me like.
- 50:18It's a pretty bold introduction. Yeah.
- 50:23Yeah. What about you, Chris?
- 50:24Are you going to, are you still? Has this made you watch other
- 50:28Studio Ghibli that you haven't seen?
- 50:30And yeah, because I want to, because I watched, I was Moving
- 50:38Castle with Finney. It's his first time watching it
- 50:41the other day. And he, Oh my God, he loved it.
- 50:44I mean, I might I might give this a couple more years with
- 50:48all the He would actually love all the heads popping off in
- 50:52this. To be fair, you'd think it was
- 50:54hilarious, but he'd be trying to do it to us all the time, so.
- 50:59Dad, Daddy, why is your head not bouncing off the wall?
- 51:03Yeah, why? I love House Moving Castle.
- 51:05That's probably one of my favorites.
- 51:07It's so. Gorgeous.
- 51:09He's like, normally he's like. I love that he loved that.
- 51:12Really bad attention span but he sat down and he watched it all
- 51:16so I think now is the time to start introducing them and I
- 51:19like watching them as well. So, you know, have you seen what
- 51:23have you seen what Lego is bringing out not just the one
- 51:27piece, the bring out a Ghibli line that Toro is getting his
- 51:31own Lego. Oh no.
- 51:35Definitely can't afford that, is it?
- 51:36How I get into Lego and end up losing my flat?
- 51:42It's OK, We'll we'll we'll. How's your up north faves?
- 51:45It's fine. Yeah, we've got a shed.
- 51:51But yeah, I'm definitely going to try to branch out and watch
- 51:54more, more Jubilee in between them, other things, because it's
- 51:58a nice like Sunday, sit down with Finney and watch him.
- 52:03And I know we can kinda if there's any dog or themes, I
- 52:06think at his age, they'll go over his head.
- 52:09He's not going to be like, dad, why do we make eye and then, I
- 52:14don't know, encroach on nature so much in this world and I'll
- 52:17be like, I don't know if any go back to eat and you see.
- 52:23Dad, what about like, why is capitalism so bad and why are
- 52:26the parents turning into pigs because of their own greed?
- 52:31See you, smarty son. I would be like, I want to sit,
- 52:35I want to sit spite. Yeah, I'll get.
- 52:39Oh I would love a little cute sprayed pushy and the little
- 52:43wooden. Kadama.
- 52:47Yeah, I would love one of them. I am desperate for a Kadama
- 52:51plush, but I'm also worried that Eddie would try and hump it, so
- 52:55that would be really sad. Yeah.
- 52:59Well, last thoughts guys. Any any kind of anything that
- 53:02you. Because.
- 53:03Since you both did research, well done gold stars you guys
- 53:06winning anime club this week. Is there anything that you
- 53:10wanted to say that you haven't had a chance before we move into
- 53:13the promos for what else is out this week?
- 53:18Yeah, the Aquadamus reminders of Chris.
- 53:20Yeah, that makes sense in both looks and in personality.
- 53:26I have often referred to Chris as like one of those old
- 53:29fashioned Pixies, like the North, like the ones who will
- 53:31lead you astray. There's one point that I wanted
- 53:37to ask you, right? So do you know if the forest
- 53:39cord is either the big night man or is there?
- 53:44Nightmare. Or the dear man thing.
- 53:49Why do you think he can't talk? I think that he doesn't need to.
- 53:55I think he can talk. He just didn't have anything to
- 53:57say in that moment. I think that's worded it
- 54:02perfectly by Phoebes. I can't add anything better than
- 54:04what she's just said other than defender of the day.
- 54:13Champion of the sun. I genuinely I think there is
- 54:18something about so you have like the there feels to me like it's
- 54:25like a higher, like a like a greater God, lesser God
- 54:28situation. And often you see in Japanese
- 54:35folklore, you have these, like you have the kind of gods who
- 54:38interact with humans and are kind of on a similar wavelength
- 54:42to them and often team up. And that's the wolves, that's
- 54:45the boars, that's the apes. And then you have these ancient
- 54:49divinities who are operating on just a different level.
- 54:55I know I've been called many of things, but that's, that's
- 54:57probably the nicest thing you've said about us, Phoebe, So that's
- 54:59nice. And I think the forest God slash
- 55:03Night Walker is a creature that is so old and so wise that what
- 55:08could it possibly have to say to any anyone that it cannot
- 55:12translate with a simple look in its creepy human face?
- 55:16Can you stop the green iron from your mountain?
- 55:19Maybe some, yeah. I wouldn't, but I but I also
- 55:22think it's like it's above that. It's about it's above the fact
- 55:26the forest is dying like this is a this is a God that is is just.
- 55:31It's not concerned with that. It's.
- 55:35I agree with that point, I do think it was on a higher you
- 55:40couldn't comprehend me what I was thinking even if I explained
- 55:43it to you in your language kind of thing.
- 55:45Also if you did talk it would get rid of a lot of the plot
- 55:49points and make them less mysterious.
- 55:51Or him or her then. Also, but if you were going to
- 55:54have it talk who what actor are you casting as?
- 55:57That as that guy, do you know the courage from Aladdin?
- 56:05Iago. Iago, who's his voice again?
- 56:10Zoran Atkinson, wasn't it? I don't.
- 56:14Remember, I don't know, I can remember that.
- 56:16What's his face? Mr. Gilbert Gilbert.
- 56:18Gilbert Godfrey. Gilbert Godfrey, that's who you
- 56:21like. That would be.
- 56:23So. Strange, it reminds me of in
- 56:27Dogma. You know where Alanis Morissette
- 56:30is God in Dogma, and she and God can't talk because if God talks,
- 56:34your head explodes. I think it's that kind of vibe.
- 56:37I think I'd have Alanis Morissette where she's just
- 56:39like. I think I would achievement it
- 56:43as well in a lot of places and a lot of things if you did have
- 56:47have him have a voice. But yeah.
- 56:50All problem solved and the film ends in 5 minutes.
- 56:54Definitely. Yeah, yeah.
- 56:56No, I enjoyed that. Yeah, that is great.
- 57:00Thank you so much for coming on, Paul.
- 57:01I am so glad that you enjoyed this experience because I was
- 57:05hoping that you would have fun and that you'd actually enjoy
- 57:08the film and it wouldn't be like a massive chore that we got you
- 57:11to do. And this week, if you enjoyed
- 57:15listening to Anime Club as much as Paul enjoyed being on Anime
- 57:18Club, which I think is a lot. Right, Paul OK, not answering.
- 57:24Moving on. You enjoyed anime club.
- 57:26Make sure that you subscribe, give us a like give us a
- 57:28comment, subscribe to the nerdy up North YouTube channel and
- 57:32check out what else we've got going on this week.
- 57:34So coming up on Monday we have The Town that Dreaded Sundown on
- 57:39Monsters, which sounds like a like a a horror film romp of a
- 57:44dark time. I think it's I think it's a busy
- 57:47RIP off of like or not a RIP off like an early version of like
- 57:51Friday the 13th mixed with Halloween typing.
- 57:55Also, it's like someone who's night blind.
- 57:57That sounds like my actual living waking nightmare.
- 58:01I too dread sundown because I get lots of bruises from bumping
- 58:04into things. And then on top gramps we have
- 58:08Chris. What are we doing on top Gramps
- 58:10next week? Oh great, we've got Napoleon
- 58:13Dynamite. Oh, Pedro.
- 58:17Pedro. Pedro, Pedro.
- 58:20And we should be recording scenes of it, our own
- 58:25interpretations. Hopefully I'll be able to throw
- 58:32a massive stake off someone. There are so many great scenes
- 58:35in that film. The bit where they're doing the
- 58:37interpretive sign language dance at the beginning has ruined all
- 58:42sign language for me because that is always the thing that
- 58:46comes into my head when I, yeah, whenever I see, see a
- 58:49translation. And then of course, on Sunday
- 58:52Pub, we have a whole episode on Tarantino.
- 58:57And if you haven't already seen, I think it was Wednesday,
- 59:01yesterday or Tuesday. Well, there.
- 59:04Was a very, very special episode for the Superman review.
- 59:08So if you like the themes of Princess Mononoke and that's and
- 59:12Paul's brief description here whet is your appetite, go check
- 59:15out that video as well. It'll be all all in the YouTube
- 59:19channel. Just hit videos.
- 59:20It's real easy to find. You guys know how to use
- 59:22YouTube? And also you can find us on the
- 59:25audio, so if you've got Spotify. Spotify, Apple, wherever you get
- 59:29your podcasts, that's where we are.
- 59:32Thanks all very much. We love you very much.
- 59:34Love you all. Bye bye.
- 59:37Everyone, bye bye.
