- 2:52Speaker 4: will join us. Plus Jennifer far from Family Healthcare Centers
- 2:54Speaker 4: is here. Your calls and text are welcome to I
- 2:57Speaker 4: want to tell you about a group called Rebuilding to
- 2:59Speaker 4: gather Now these folks do home repairs everything from ramps
- 3:02Speaker 4: to handrails to new roofs for homeowners and Canal and
- 3:06Speaker 4: Putnam Counties have been doing this for like thirty years.
- 3:10Speaker 2: But you don't do.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Stuff without this like this without funds. Executive director is
- 3:13Speaker 4: Alison Brill. She is here along with Olivia Hubbard lebrity.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Am I pronouncing that right?
- 3:18Speaker 5: Yes?
- 3:19Speaker 4: Who is on the board of this organizations? Well, good morning,
- 3:23Speaker 4: Alison will start with you. Good morning, welcome to the show.
- 3:25Speaker 5: Thanks so much for having me appreciate it.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Okay, let me have you coming to that microphone just
- 3:29Speaker 4: a little bit there, Okay, better, there you go, there
- 3:32Speaker 4: you go, there you go.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Now.
- 3:34Speaker 4: Olivia and I, of course we go way back from
- 3:37Speaker 4: my days in state government, so I already know her.
- 3:40Speaker 4: So let's let people get to know you a little bit,
- 3:43Speaker 4: tell me about you, and tell me about this organization.
- 3:45Speaker 4: Then we'll bring a Livy in. I'm not going to
- 3:46Speaker 4: forget you'll Livy.
- 3:47Speaker 2: We go ahead.
- 3:48Speaker 5: So I'm originally from Hampshire County, so in the eastern
- 3:50Speaker 5: Panhandle is where I grew up, and I came down
- 3:53Speaker 5: here in twenty sixteen for an internship and I ended
- 3:55Speaker 5: up working a lot with Rebuilding Together Charleston, and when
- 3:59Speaker 5: I graduated in twenty seventeen from Wesleyan, I moved down
- 4:02Speaker 5: here and accept the position of executive director. And so
- 4:05Speaker 5: I've been here since or about ten years now, and
- 4:08Speaker 5: I've hopefully done a good job. They haven't given up
- 4:11Speaker 5: for me yet, but I've been trying to revitalize the
- 4:16Speaker 5: organization and bring them back to what they were in
- 4:18Speaker 5: the heyday. A lot of people know our organization by
- 4:20Speaker 5: Christmas and April, and we've changed that name from the
- 4:23Speaker 5: nineties when we first started out to Christmas and to
- 4:26Speaker 5: Rebuilding Together in about two thousand and five.
- 4:28Speaker 4: Okay, so explain the basic mission statement of the organization absolutely.
- 4:33Speaker 5: So we try to repair homes, revitalize communities, rebuild lives.
- 4:39Speaker 5: So repairing homes pretty much speaks for itself, I think.
- 4:41Speaker 5: So anything that is essential to make your home warmer, safer, dryer,
- 4:46Speaker 5: we try and do revitalizing communities. Sometimes the work we do,
- 4:50Speaker 5: and a good majority of it tries to actually revitalize
- 4:53Speaker 5: the neighborhood, bring it back to life. So we usually
- 4:56Speaker 5: have work on a home on a block the neighborhood
- 4:59Speaker 5: hears about us. Do you work for the neighbor as well,
- 5:01Speaker 5: and it brings it back to life.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Yeah, so it's not just about one home, it's about
- 5:04Speaker 4: the entire blocks.
- 5:05Speaker 5: The entire blocks absolutely so. Even in the rural communities,
- 5:08Speaker 5: the word gets out from neighbor telling neighbor of what
- 5:10Speaker 5: we do and what we did for them. And you
- 5:12Speaker 5: can see a change even the royal communities as you
- 5:14Speaker 5: drive down their lane.
- 5:15Speaker 4: What is the most common one or two requests that
- 5:20Speaker 4: you get for specific things? I mean, were the most
- 5:23Speaker 4: one or two common ones?
- 5:24Speaker 5: So the most common ones currently that we have is
- 5:28Speaker 5: something as simple as hand rails. We actually have several
- 5:31Speaker 5: people requesting handrails that can be inside or outside of
- 5:35Speaker 5: the home. And the other one is also showers, So
- 5:39Speaker 5: we're people are asking us to do walk in showers
- 5:42Speaker 5: for them and because they can't step over that threshold
- 5:45Speaker 5: of like what the baftub is anymore, and so they.
- 5:47Speaker 4: Are because the changes that have happened in their lives,
- 5:50Speaker 4: a medical condition, accident, something like that.
- 5:52Speaker 5: It can be anybody in their you know, thirties who
- 5:54Speaker 5: had an accident in medical issue that they're asking us, Hey,
- 5:57Speaker 5: I can't take a shower, I don't have dignant anymore. Yeah,
- 6:01Speaker 5: all the way to you know, you're a great aunt
- 6:03Speaker 5: who is ninety two years old.
- 6:06Speaker 4: So I think, I think it's a wonderful organization. And
- 6:10Speaker 4: these services are free of.
- 6:11Speaker 5: Charge, absolutely no charge to the homeowner at all.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Okay, so how do people get on your list or
- 6:16Speaker 4: how do how do they qualify for this?
- 6:18Speaker 5: So we asked that people, of course like you mentioned,
- 6:21Speaker 5: live in kana Putnham County, they have to own their home,
- 6:24Speaker 5: they have to lived there for at least three years
- 6:27Speaker 5: and be considered low income. So we have the income
- 6:29Speaker 5: requirements on our website, so we do fifty percent of
- 6:32Speaker 5: the area immediate income. And so most people who ask
- 6:36Speaker 5: for applications qualified, So are applications on the website and
- 6:39Speaker 5: also they can call and we can send it to them.
- 6:42Speaker 4: Let me you're on the board here, and now I
- 6:44Speaker 4: know you haven't been on the board for very long,
- 6:45Speaker 4: but tell us about this organization, what you've learned and
- 6:47Speaker 4: being on the board.
- 6:48Speaker 6: Yeah, absolutely, so I have been on the board about
- 6:51Speaker 6: six months now, and Allison was very modest. She has
- 6:53Speaker 6: done an amazing job growing the organization. We recently received
- 6:57Speaker 6: a HUD grant, a federal grant that is specific to
- 7:00Speaker 6: the West Side, and so we're going to be working
- 7:03Speaker 6: on a lot of homes in the two five three
- 7:05Speaker 6: zero two zip code under this federal grant, which is
- 7:08Speaker 6: really exciting and it's a great opportunity for that neighborhood.
- 7:12Speaker 6: I have learned. I've learned a lot in the short
- 7:15Speaker 6: time that I have been on the board. This organization
- 7:18Speaker 6: is turning thirty this year. It's the thirtieth organization also
- 7:22Speaker 6: turned thirty this year, so that was exciting to learn. Yeah,
- 7:27Speaker 6: but just they do like stories. If you want to
- 7:30Speaker 6: check out the Facebook, we do stories of like homeowners
- 7:33Speaker 6: that we've helped and different features like that, and it's
- 7:36Speaker 6: just incredible. Allison told a story recently at one of
- 7:40Speaker 6: our board meetings about a man who was in a
- 7:43Speaker 6: power chair and we were able to put to redo
- 7:48Speaker 6: his porch so that he could leave his home. He
- 7:50Speaker 6: immediately went to the dollar store. He was so excited
- 7:52Speaker 6: to be able to get back to the dollar store
- 7:54Speaker 6: that used to be his hangout. But he told the
- 7:56Speaker 6: volunteer crew that had worked He's like, I have been
- 7:59Speaker 6: a prisoner in my home and you guys just released me.
- 8:01Speaker 6: And it was just so powerful to hear, and that's
- 8:03Speaker 6: true of many of the homeowners that were able to help.
- 8:07Speaker 4: And those are things, Olivia and Allison, things that we
- 8:10Speaker 4: take for granted, those of us that are able bodied
- 8:13Speaker 4: and get up and go, as you said, to the
- 8:15Speaker 4: dollar store, go to McDonald's, whatever the case may be,
- 8:17Speaker 4: go to grocery store, go to church. But when something
- 8:22Speaker 4: happens like that, especially if it's I would think if
- 8:25Speaker 4: it's somebody that this is a sudden occurrence in their home,
- 8:29Speaker 4: it's a sudden illness or sudden injury or something like
- 8:32Speaker 4: that that has left them. As you said, this gentleman
- 8:34Speaker 4: liked to go to the dollar store. It's something he
- 8:36Speaker 4: did maybe a couple of times a day. Told suddenly
- 8:38Speaker 4: you used to term prisoner in your own home. I mean,
- 8:41Speaker 4: this is life changing for these folks, it is.
- 8:44Speaker 6: And the organization we have we do a lot of
- 8:48Speaker 6: those type of repairs with volunteers too, which is really
- 8:51Speaker 6: powerful to see these groups come. It can be like
- 8:55Speaker 6: a employer that does a volunteer day and you can,
- 8:59Speaker 6: you know, work on somebody sport or put in handrails
- 9:01Speaker 6: or things like that. And then they also if it's
- 9:04Speaker 6: a roof or something like that, we'll use contractors, but
- 9:07Speaker 6: to see those volunteer groups meet and really make a
- 9:11Speaker 6: huge change in somebody's life, Like I think it's powerful
- 9:13Speaker 6: for everybody involved.
- 9:15Speaker 4: And I would think that when these different like I
- 9:18Speaker 4: know the United Way has their Day of Giving, many
- 9:21Speaker 4: many companies do, private companies do things like this where
- 9:24Speaker 4: they take a day and they go help out with
- 9:26Speaker 4: this organization or that organization. I would think that that
- 9:28Speaker 4: would be ideal for some of them just to come
- 9:30Speaker 4: in kind of help you out. And you don't do
- 9:31Speaker 4: these things though without funds, and so you need funds.
- 9:35Speaker 4: Where can people donate, whether it's time, cash or monetary
- 9:41Speaker 4: donation or materials, Where can people donate and get involved?
- 9:44Speaker 5: Absolutely so just the basic when people think of donate cash.
- 9:48Speaker 5: We have a system on our websites. You go on
- 9:49Speaker 5: a website, it will probably pop up say you want
- 9:52Speaker 5: to donate, So that's someplace they can donate as well.
- 9:55Speaker 5: Can also nail a check or things like that and
- 9:57Speaker 5: get back to them. But also we're looking to improve
- 10:01Speaker 5: the local volunteerism. We know people love to volunteer. We
- 10:04Speaker 5: know there's people with skills, there's people without skills, and
- 10:06Speaker 5: just good hearts and want to help their neighbor, so
- 10:09Speaker 5: they can call our office, email us carry your pigeon.
- 10:11Speaker 5: At this point, we'll get back to them. And so
- 10:14Speaker 5: we're trying to look for either organization's businesses anything like that,
- 10:18Speaker 5: churches just to volunteer and get back to the community.
- 10:22Speaker 5: We try and partner them with a homeowner that best
- 10:25Speaker 5: suits their skill sets and needs and such. So we're
- 10:27Speaker 5: not just going to throw you on a project without
- 10:29Speaker 5: ever talking to you. We talk to you and your
- 10:31Speaker 5: organization a lot before we pick a project.
- 10:33Speaker 4: Is there an age for volunteers, because I mean, is
- 10:36Speaker 4: there like an age requirement you have to be like
- 10:38Speaker 4: twenty one or we.
- 10:39Speaker 5: Actually have at least fourteen. So we have a lot
- 10:42Speaker 5: of church teams come in the summer months and we
- 10:45Speaker 5: teach the youth how to build like a wheel trip.
- 10:49Speaker 4: I say that because I'm bringing this up all the
- 10:50Speaker 4: time on the show. If you are graduating high school,
- 10:53Speaker 4: you have to have so many community service hours and
- 10:57Speaker 4: there are various things you can do in the community.
- 10:58Speaker 4: Is this something that they would qualify for some point?
- 11:01Speaker 7: Yes.
- 11:01Speaker 5: So in the past we've actually worked with usually groups
- 11:04Speaker 5: of teenagers and usually they have like one adult with them.
- 11:07Speaker 5: From either their school or one of their parents or something.
- 11:09Speaker 5: And so they can work on a project if they
- 11:10Speaker 5: get in touch with us, and we can try and
- 11:12Speaker 5: match them to a project, and we certify that, yes,
- 11:14Speaker 5: you did volunteer with us. Here are the hours you
- 11:16Speaker 5: volunteered with us.
- 11:18Speaker 4: We're talking with Olivia and Allison's rebuilding together. The Dave
- 11:22Speaker 4: Alan Show in five eighty Live has brought you in
- 11:24Speaker 4: part by Morgan to Morgan with more than twenty billion
- 11:26Speaker 4: dollars recovered. They believe that when you're injured, you deserve more.
- 11:29Speaker 4: Morgan and Morgan, America's largest injury law firm. We had
- 11:32Speaker 4: a text here it said, our home is in desperty
- 11:34Speaker 4: of a floor section replacements in different rooms. I think
- 11:38Speaker 4: our foundation is sinking causing is Does your organization help
- 11:41Speaker 4: with things like that?
- 11:42Speaker 5: So we do help with flooring issues such as that.
- 11:45Speaker 5: That's one of the repairs that a lot of people
- 11:46Speaker 5: have contacted us about. We do, not, however, work on foundations,
- 11:50Speaker 5: just partially because we have our own insurance and we
- 11:53Speaker 5: can't work on foundations because that's a little too sensitive
- 11:56Speaker 5: if something went wrong with a contractor or something. And
- 11:59Speaker 5: also so there's a limit of what we can input
- 12:01Speaker 5: into a home for monetary wise, we can only go
- 12:04Speaker 5: up to a certain amount on projects depending on the
- 12:07Speaker 5: funding that we have. So we won't work on a foundation,
- 12:09Speaker 5: but we can usually work on the flooring.
- 12:11Speaker 4: Okay, and I'll give a big shout out. We have
- 12:13Speaker 4: several people that advertise with this company. I know the
- 12:16Speaker 4: folks at Foster Foundation Repair do a fantastic job, so
- 12:20Speaker 4: to the to the text there, if you want to
- 12:23Speaker 4: try to get in touch with those folks. I mean
- 12:24Speaker 4: they're a company, so now they can't do it for free,
- 12:26Speaker 4: but they may be able to help you out the
- 12:28Speaker 4: Foster Foundation. There's so many that do great things and
- 12:31Speaker 4: that advertise with us. But I want to kind of
- 12:33Speaker 4: get in my there as well. What's your website so
- 12:35Speaker 4: people can learn more?
- 12:35Speaker 5: So our website is www dot rt WV dot org. Okay,
- 12:41Speaker 5: such as we've ailding together West Virginia dot work.
- 12:44Speaker 4: And you're on social media, Yes, We're on.
- 12:46Speaker 5: Facebook and were on Instagram, so we pretty have pretty
- 12:49Speaker 5: active social media's there so people can kind of follow along,
- 12:52Speaker 5: which we encourage. This month, we're going to be sharing
- 12:54Speaker 5: a lot more about what we do, the work we
- 12:56Speaker 5: do and the impact it does in the community.
- 12:58Speaker 4: All right, Well, you're always welcome back in the show,
- 13:00Speaker 4: show any time you want to come back. Alison Brill
- 13:02Speaker 4: and Olivia, I appreciate you both for being here with
- 13:05Speaker 4: us today.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Thanks a lot.
- 13:06Speaker 4: Keep doing great things in the community.
- 13:07Speaker 6: Thanks so much for having us.
- 13:08Speaker 4: It's nine twenty. Do you either one of you need
- 13:11Speaker 4: your taxes done? By the way, unfortunate.
- 13:14Speaker 5: I'm good, I'm good.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Okay, I'm done. Okay.
- 13:16Speaker 4: I was going to say, because we've got a guest
- 13:17Speaker 4: coming up next hour that's offering service. Is similar to
- 13:20Speaker 4: what you do that are trying to help people out
- 13:22Speaker 4: to get your taxes done. So just throwing it out there.
- 13:24Speaker 4: If you know anybody does you might want to stick around. Well,

- 15:53Speaker 4: zero to two. All right, so we'd like to at
- 15:54Speaker 4: least have them win one. Okay, they'll play at gomart
- 15:58Speaker 4: Ballpark on May fifth. Digain dirty Birds baseball dot com
- 16:01Speaker 4: or their social media if you need more information. Tax
- 16:04Speaker 4: Day next Wednesday, some folks could use a little help.
- 16:07Speaker 4: Rob James is here with a group, West Virginia Alliance
- 16:10Speaker 4: for Sustainable Families. You got it, Yeah, all right, I
- 16:13Speaker 4: rehearsed that and everything.
- 16:15Speaker 2: So welcome to the show. Thank you, Thank you so much.
- 16:18Speaker 2: It's great to be here.
- 16:19Speaker 11: Yeah, this is so the West Virginia Alliance for Sustainable Families.
- 16:25Speaker 2: We are a.
- 16:26Speaker 11: Nonprofit that was basically created to do what's called the
- 16:31Speaker 11: VITA program, which is volunteer income Tax Assistance, which means
- 16:34Speaker 11: that we provide free income tax preparation for load of
- 16:37Speaker 11: moderate income or load of moderate individuals in families with
- 16:42Speaker 11: load of moderate income individuals and families in West Virginia
- 16:46Speaker 11: and so next Wednesday. And this is the first time
- 16:50Speaker 11: we've ever done anything exactly like this. Well, I've formed
- 16:55Speaker 11: basically a coalition, an alliance, if you will, of a
- 17:00Speaker 11: bunch of different We have a few sites in the
- 17:02Speaker 11: charlest scenario that do free income tax prep and so
- 17:06Speaker 11: several of them. We're going to get together at the
- 17:08Speaker 11: United Way of Central West Virginia on Wednesday from ten
- 17:11Speaker 11: am to four pm and we're going to do a
- 17:13Speaker 11: day where folks can just walk in and if they
- 17:16Speaker 11: haven't got their taxes done, they can get their taxes
- 17:19Speaker 11: done and we'll be there to.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Help them out.
- 17:21Speaker 11: And honestly, if you haven't done your taxes by April fifteenth,
- 17:25Speaker 11: it's probably a reason. And that reason is probably because
- 17:28Speaker 11: you suspect that you owe money.
- 17:29Speaker 4: You owe money, or maybe or maybe you can't afford
- 17:31Speaker 4: to have them done, right.
- 17:32Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, yeah, So we we're at we're in nonprofit.
- 17:37Speaker 2: We're absolutely free.
- 17:40Speaker 11: If you do owe money to the irs, we can
- 17:41Speaker 11: kind of guide you through that process to make it
- 17:44Speaker 11: as painless as possible. I can't promise you that we're
- 17:47Speaker 11: not going to be able.
- 17:48Speaker 2: To mitigate what you owe. We're going to be able to.
- 17:49Speaker 4: You're not in that part of the business.
- 17:51Speaker 11: No, No, we're going to make it a lot easier.
- 17:54Speaker 11: So that yeah, that's what we do. So we have
- 17:59Speaker 11: the United Way and the Maker Center which is on
- 18:03Speaker 11: the west side on Patrick Street.
- 18:06Speaker 2: And oh no, it just lost my just left my mind.
- 18:11Speaker 11: Oh Pride Community Services, which is it's down near the
- 18:15Speaker 11: ballpark and Logan is where they come from their Logan.
- 18:19Speaker 4: I'm very familiar with the Pride organization from Logan and
- 18:22Speaker 4: I spent a lot of time. Yeah, I spent a
- 18:24Speaker 4: lot of time with the folks with with the with
- 18:26Speaker 4: with Pride of Logan County and they've kind of expanded
- 18:30Speaker 4: beyond that to go to other areas now. But they're
- 18:32Speaker 4: based in Logan.
- 18:32Speaker 2: You're right, right, yeah, but now they are.
- 18:35Speaker 11: They have an office in Kanna County and they've been
- 18:39Speaker 11: kind enough to help us do taxes. They've actually been
- 18:41Speaker 11: doing taxes with me at the library at the Big
- 18:44Speaker 11: Library downtown for all of taxis and and and they're
- 18:49Speaker 11: kinder still because they're going to do our free income
- 18:53Speaker 11: prep tax Day, last Minute tax Day at the United Away.
- 18:58Speaker 4: So when you say it's it's for lower income people, Yeah,
- 19:03Speaker 4: so how do you what's what's the income? I mean,
- 19:06Speaker 4: how do you how does that work?
- 19:07Speaker 11: Well, we're we ask that folks keep it to under
- 19:11Speaker 11: seventy thousand.
- 19:12Speaker 2: Okay, so if your income is under.
- 19:14Speaker 11: Seventy thousand, then come on down. We also don't do
- 19:20Speaker 11: anything super complicated. We want to help as many people
- 19:25Speaker 11: as we can. And the VITA program, which is actually
- 19:28Speaker 11: funded by the I r S.
- 19:29Speaker 2: We actually we get it. We're not the i r S.
- 19:31Speaker 2: I'm not the IRS.
- 19:32Speaker 11: We get a grant from the I r S to
- 19:34Speaker 11: do free income to exprop And there's certain things that
- 19:36Speaker 11: we are allowed to do in certain things we're not
- 19:38Speaker 11: allowed to do. So we can't do any anyone that
- 19:41Speaker 11: has rental properties. We can't do anyone that has a farm,
- 19:46Speaker 11: we can't do anyone that has We're not going to
- 19:49Speaker 11: do anyone that has a form called a K one,
- 19:52Speaker 11: which if you don't know taxes and don't know what
- 19:54Speaker 11: that means, that's fine. But if you do, if you
- 19:57Speaker 11: get a K one, you know what a K one is.
- 19:59Speaker 11: It's a distribution from a partnership, a state or trust.
- 20:03Speaker 11: And if you have a really complicated business, then you know,
- 20:07Speaker 11: we want to help as many people as possible. So
- 20:09Speaker 11: we're not going to do any super complicated schedulecye businesses.
- 20:13Speaker 4: But you can do you can do businesses. I mean
- 20:15Speaker 4: as long as it's a simple type business.
- 20:17Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 20:18Speaker 11: Yeah, if you if you have all of your expenses
- 20:20Speaker 11: and everything together pretty well, and you're for example, if
- 20:24Speaker 11: you you're an uber driver or something like that, Yeah,
- 20:26Speaker 11: come on down.
- 20:27Speaker 2: But if you have but if.
- 20:28Speaker 4: You're Toyota of West Virginia probably.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Right, yeah, yeah, any kind of self employed business.
- 20:35Speaker 11: Just to not to get too far into the nitty gritty,
- 20:37Speaker 11: but if you have an inventory that you keep track of,
- 20:40Speaker 11: or if you have if you have anything that has
- 20:44Speaker 11: depreciation on it, yeah, then that's not what I'm here.
- 20:48Speaker 4: And it's like pretty much somebody you mentioned an uber driver.
- 20:50Speaker 4: I'm picturing somebody that maybe is in business for themselves,
- 20:54Speaker 4: like a one man, one woman operation. Yeah, it's kind
- 20:56Speaker 4: of simple, uh cort of thing. Maybe I don't want
- 20:59Speaker 4: to I don't want to throw it anything out there
- 21:01Speaker 4: because I don't want anybody to say, well, he says,
- 21:02Speaker 4: my profession is simple, that's not what I mean. But
- 21:05Speaker 4: I mean if it's a simple you know, lawn care
- 21:08Speaker 4: or something like, you could probably do that, right.
- 21:10Speaker 11: Yeah, anything like that's kind of a gig economy thing,
- 21:13Speaker 11: then that might put it.
- 21:14Speaker 2: That's what we would do.
- 21:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 21:16Speaker 4: Primarily you're looking for individuals, I mean that you're looking
- 21:18Speaker 4: to help individuals.
- 21:19Speaker 11: Right, Yeah, We're going to help as many people as
- 21:22Speaker 11: we can. From ten to four we've got We've got
- 21:26Speaker 11: volunteers from all over. And also I would be remiss
- 21:30Speaker 11: Chemic Credit Union, which is in Dunbar. They also do
- 21:33Speaker 11: free income tax prep and you might give them a
- 21:37Speaker 11: call as well.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Between now and Wednesday.
- 21:39Speaker 11: I think they're going to be doing it on their
- 21:41Speaker 11: own up to the day anyway, so Chemic Credit Union,
- 21:45Speaker 11: I would give them a call. And then the United
- 21:48Speaker 11: Way Central West Virginia, which if you don't know, it's
- 21:51Speaker 11: near the restore and Greens Feed and Seed. Ten to
- 21:57Speaker 11: four we're going to be doing it and just just
- 21:59Speaker 11: come on down. I don't know exactly how chaotic it's
- 22:03Speaker 11: going to be, because this is the first time we've
- 22:04Speaker 11: done anything like this. It could be that half a
- 22:07Speaker 11: dozen people show up, and it could be that one
- 22:09Speaker 11: hundred people show up. We're open for closer to one hundred,
- 22:13Speaker 11: but let's not go crazy. But it is, we'll get
- 22:16Speaker 11: you in and out of there pretty fast too.
- 22:18Speaker 4: What would make it for the tax prepares Rob What
- 22:22Speaker 4: would make it easier on you guys if people should
- 22:24Speaker 4: I mean, you don't want people just showing up going, hey,
- 22:26Speaker 4: I need to do my taxes. Yeah, you got to
- 22:28Speaker 4: have something you got to bring some sort of paper
- 22:31Speaker 4: in right.
- 22:31Speaker 11: Yeah, absolutely, So the easiest thing that you can do
- 22:35Speaker 11: to facilitate it is make sure that you have your
- 22:37Speaker 11: IDs ready, make sure that everybody that's listed as a
- 22:42Speaker 11: tax payer so the primary person in the spouse is
- 22:46Speaker 11: present and available to sign. We really can't, you know,
- 22:50Speaker 11: we can't let people go home if we had to
- 22:52Speaker 11: verify everyone's identity. So we can't let people take things
- 22:56Speaker 11: home and have them sign it and bring them back.
- 22:57Speaker 11: Just make sure you know that you they're either there
- 23:01Speaker 11: with you or if you've made or you've made arrangements
- 23:03Speaker 11: to get them there that day. And make sure that
- 23:07Speaker 11: you have all your tax paperwork, that's any kind of
- 23:09Speaker 11: income documents, anything from the State of West Virginia that
- 23:14Speaker 11: gets your refund fright. For example, the state of West
- 23:16Speaker 11: Virginia has something called the MV one and what it is,
- 23:19Speaker 11: it's a rebate on your personal property tax if you
- 23:22Speaker 11: pay your personal property taxes on online, that's.
- 23:25Speaker 2: Let your cars taxes on your car.
- 23:27Speaker 11: And so if you if you have that form and
- 23:31Speaker 11: I'd go digging through the mail for it, bring it
- 23:34Speaker 11: in because we in order to get you that rebate
- 23:37Speaker 11: on your taxes, we got to see the form, so
- 23:39Speaker 11: look for it. If you're if you're thinking about coming in,
- 23:42Speaker 11: make sure that you look for it. Look for the
- 23:44Speaker 11: MV one form. And if you don't have it, but
- 23:47Speaker 11: you suspect that you did pay your taxes online, then
- 23:50Speaker 11: you can go on the West Virginia tax website, which
- 23:55Speaker 11: I think is my Taxes WV dot gov. And if
- 24:00Speaker 11: if that's not it, you can just you can google it.
- 24:02Speaker 11: Make sure anytime you're dealing with taxes, make sure that
- 24:05Speaker 11: the web address that you're looking at is a dot
- 24:08Speaker 11: gov address when you want to get anything official. But
- 24:13Speaker 11: go ahead and you can go on that website. You
- 24:16Speaker 11: just have to put in your name, your the tax
- 24:20Speaker 11: ticket number, which you can find on the Kanaw County
- 24:22Speaker 11: Shaff's office website, and your driver's license number. And if
- 24:25Speaker 11: there is a form out there that you can use
- 24:27Speaker 11: for your taxes, you'll be able to find it.
- 24:31Speaker 4: Are you still in need of volunteers to help out
- 24:34Speaker 4: or are you good on that? I mean somebody, if
- 24:36Speaker 4: somebody's listening right now, they say, hey, this sounds like
- 24:38Speaker 4: a great thing. I have the skill set to do
- 24:40Speaker 4: this on an accountant or whatever, and I would like
- 24:41Speaker 4: to do this could I come help. Do you still
- 24:44Speaker 4: need people to do that?
- 24:46Speaker 11: We don't need people this year. Everybody, every volunteer that
- 24:49Speaker 11: we have is certified by the IRS.
- 24:51Speaker 2: So it's a whole thing. I got you.
- 24:53Speaker 11: You get to take a you have to take a
- 24:55Speaker 11: certification test in order to do it, and then you know,
- 24:58Speaker 11: we want you to go through a training and so
- 25:01Speaker 11: there's just.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Not really time I get it this year.
- 25:04Speaker 11: But however, I'm not going to turn any volunteers away
- 25:07Speaker 11: next year. So if you're listening to this and you
- 25:10Speaker 11: you think, oh, I'd love to do that, I'd love
- 25:12Speaker 11: to help out the community, because, believe it or not, David,
- 25:14Speaker 11: this is hard to believe. There are people out there
- 25:16Speaker 11: that love doing tax returns. There are people out there
- 25:19Speaker 11: that will do tax return after tax return after tax return,
- 25:23Speaker 11: and I'm one of them.
- 25:24Speaker 2: I'm happy to sit down here. I like what you like.
- 25:26Speaker 3: Man.
- 25:26Speaker 4: Yeah, everybody everybody said that, like my coworker TJ. Meadows,
- 25:30Speaker 4: And I'm sure he wouldn't mind for me saying this.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Would probably give up one of his children for an
- 25:36Speaker 4: opportunity to do a to do a spreadsheet. It's his thing.
- 25:40Speaker 4: And when we are having a meeting, the other.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Day about some things, and he said.
- 25:44Speaker 4: I'll do a spreadsheet. I'll do a spreadsheet. And I'm like,
- 25:46Speaker 4: you're you're sick, you know, just so you know, but
- 25:48Speaker 4: everybody likes what they like.
- 25:49Speaker 11: I'm absolutely the same way. I love a good spreadsheet. Yeah,
- 25:55Speaker 11: but if so, But if you are that kind of person,
- 25:57Speaker 11: if you're the kind of person like you know, and
- 25:59Speaker 11: there are there are people in you know, they're probably
- 26:02Speaker 11: pretty grumpy about it, but secretly they love it. Because
- 26:05Speaker 11: there are people that are like, oh no, I just
- 26:06Speaker 11: do my taxes online, and then somebody in their family
- 26:08Speaker 11: finds out about it and they're like, can you do
- 26:11Speaker 11: my taxes? And then you know, it kind of snowballs
- 26:15Speaker 11: from there and suddenly they're responsible for half a dozen
- 26:18Speaker 11: families during tax season, and you know, again they're like,
- 26:21Speaker 11: oh okay. But the truth is is they probably enjoy it.
- 26:25Speaker 11: They enjoy kind of the the numbers aspect of it
- 26:29Speaker 11: or the puzzles aspect of it. So if you're one
- 26:30Speaker 11: of those people, please get in touch with me our
- 26:34Speaker 11: James at WVASF dot org.
- 26:38Speaker 2: That's the West.
- 26:39Speaker 11: Virginia Alliance for Sustainable Families, So it's WVASF dot org
- 26:44Speaker 11: and it's our James, and reach out to me, and
- 26:46Speaker 11: I'm happy to I'm happy to have any volunteers. I
- 26:49Speaker 11: will talk to you after tax season and then we'll
- 26:53Speaker 11: work on it. And also if you have any questions
- 26:55Speaker 11: about the event, if you're like, well, I'm not sure
- 26:58Speaker 11: if I qualify, so on and so forth, you can
- 27:00Speaker 11: also email me. I would prefer you email me and
- 27:04Speaker 11: ask me before you show up and we have to
- 27:07Speaker 11: figure it out live. So yeah, definitely, any questions about
- 27:10Speaker 11: it or any questions about the organization, please feel free
- 27:13Speaker 11: to email me.
- 27:14Speaker 4: All right, And the event is on tax Day, but
- 27:16Speaker 4: one are the hours again in the location.
- 27:18Speaker 11: It is going to be Wednesday, April fifteenth, the United
- 27:21Speaker 11: Way of Central West Virginia, and we're going to start
- 27:24Speaker 11: around ten, we're going to end around four. I will
- 27:27Speaker 11: say that events like this depending upon how many people
- 27:32Speaker 11: find out about it, and that's why I'm here, of course,
- 27:36Speaker 11: that it tend to be very popular. So you might
- 27:39Speaker 11: consider showing up a little bit early. Don't come out
- 27:42Speaker 11: in the parking lot at six am, but if you do,
- 27:45Speaker 11: bring donuts.
- 27:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:47Speaker 11: I've been doing taxes for ten years, both privately and
- 27:51Speaker 11: for this nonprofit, and I can tell you that when
- 27:55Speaker 11: it's taxiason, there is never a time when I went
- 27:59Speaker 11: into work to taxes and there.
- 28:00Speaker 2: Wasn't somebody waiting for me.
- 28:02Speaker 11: It doesn't it doesn't matter how early I get it,
- 28:06Speaker 11: get there, there's always that there There used to be
- 28:09Speaker 11: somebody in the parking lot waiting for me anytime I
- 28:11Speaker 11: got there. So you know, and we realize that's going
- 28:14Speaker 11: to happen. But yeah, if you want to get your
- 28:16Speaker 11: taxes done early, get in and out come early. These
- 28:19Speaker 11: people are really good. We got people that have been
- 28:22Speaker 11: to on taxes for many, many years. So what that
- 28:26Speaker 11: means is that they're pretty fast, and that means that
- 28:29Speaker 11: we are going to do our best to get folks
- 28:32Speaker 11: in and out of there as soon as possible because
- 28:34Speaker 11: we want to help the most people we can. And
- 28:37Speaker 11: you know, in that six hour timeframe. So you know,
- 28:41Speaker 11: if you if you want it done, if you want
- 28:43Speaker 11: it done, first come in early, because it's going to
- 28:45Speaker 11: be first come, first serve, walk in and you will
- 28:50Speaker 11: be amazed by at the speed in which we can
- 28:53Speaker 11: get it done for you.
- 28:54Speaker 4: Rob James, West, Virginia Alliance for Sustainable Families, appreciate you
- 28:57Speaker 4: being here, man.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Thanks a lot.
- 28:58Speaker 11: Oh, thanks, thanks a lot, good good to see you
- 29:01Speaker 11: and thanks for having me. Good luck with everything on Wednesday.
- 29:04Speaker 11: It's probably gonna be a little zany, but hopefully we
- 29:08Speaker 11: can contain the chaos at least a little bit. But
- 29:10Speaker 11: if you need your tax is done. We hope to
- 29:12Speaker 11: see you.
- 29:12Speaker 4: There all right, good luck to good luck to you
- 29:15Speaker 4: on everything by twenty four minutes away from ten. We'll
- 29:18Speaker 4: take a break back after this on the Voice of
- 29:20Speaker 4: Charleston WCCHS.

- 29:47Speaker 8: the dirty work to benefit corporate megastores. Durbin's bill could
- 29:51Speaker 8: cut corners on your credit card security, putting your personal

- 30:02Speaker 8: them do it. Tell senators say no to the megastores

- 30:24Speaker 14: For the past decade, West Virginia has had one of
- 30:26Speaker 14: the most conservative state senates in America, and much of
- 30:29Speaker 14: that leadership has come from doctor Tom to Cubo.
- 30:31Speaker 15: I'm doctor Tom Tacubo. As your state Senator. I led
- 30:35Speaker 15: the charge to end abortion here in West Virginia and
- 30:37Speaker 15: protect innocent line. We were one of the first states
- 30:40Speaker 15: in the nation to ban transgender surgeries and protect their children,
- 30:44Speaker 15: and I've consistently voted to defend our Second Amendment right.
- 30:47Speaker 2: Proven conservative leadership.
- 30:49Speaker 4: Doctor Tom Tacubo for State Senate.
- 30:52Speaker 1: Paid for it like the Cubo for Senate.

- 32:58Speaker 2: Will talk to them about that.
- 32:58Speaker 4: Jennifer farr A and Autumn Rucker Family Healthcare Centers here.
- 33:02Speaker 4: Good morning, folks, welcome to the show. Good morning, Autumn,
- 33:04Speaker 4: welcome to job.
- 33:05Speaker 2: Good morning.
- 33:06Speaker 4: Then, Jennifer is a regular. This first time you've been
- 33:08Speaker 4: on the show though, right, yeah, all right, So we
- 33:10Speaker 4: need to get to know you we already know, Jennifer. Okay,
- 33:12Speaker 4: so we can get to tell us about Autumn Rocker.
- 33:14Speaker 16: So I'm Autumn Rocker with Curate Designs, an in full
- 33:19Speaker 16: service interior design studio, and I'm working with Family Care
- 33:24Speaker 16: on their upcoming maternal health fare on a special giveaway.
- 33:28Speaker 4: Okay, comit a little closer to the microphone for me there,
- 33:30Speaker 4: All right, Jennifer, tell us about what you get going
- 33:33Speaker 4: on at Family Health.
- 33:34Speaker 17: So this Saturday at the birth center at one o
- 33:37Speaker 17: eight Washington Street West in Elk City, we are having
- 33:40Speaker 17: a maternal healthfare in our parking lot at our birth
- 33:43Speaker 17: center and it'll be an opportunity for people to meet
- 33:46Speaker 17: the midwives and dulas and the staff that are there,
- 33:49Speaker 17: have some resources that are available, and one of the
- 33:52Speaker 17: things that we're most gracious for is that Autumn Rucker
- 33:56Speaker 17: Curate Designs. She's giving away a full nursery makeover during
- 34:00Speaker 17: the maternal health fare.
- 34:01Speaker 4: All right, So how did you get hooked up in
- 34:03Speaker 4: this at them?
- 34:04Speaker 16: So I have known Jennifer and we have just kind
- 34:07Speaker 16: of had got to talking about the maternal health fare.
- 34:10Speaker 16: And my heart has always been for mothers as I'm
- 34:13Speaker 16: a mother myself and It just has always been something
- 34:16Speaker 16: that I've wanted to be able to do, is to
- 34:17Speaker 16: give back to the community, and it just seemed like
- 34:20Speaker 16: the perfect way to be able to do that.
- 34:22Speaker 4: So complete makeovers what you're saying right, Yeah, for the nursery,
- 34:25Speaker 4: what kind of things would I guess it would depend
- 34:27Speaker 4: on the particular situation. But what kind of things are
- 34:31Speaker 4: we talking about a particular that you think you might
- 34:33Speaker 4: do with this kid one?
- 34:34Speaker 16: Yeah, So I want to be able to work with
- 34:36Speaker 16: the mother and help them come up with a design
- 34:38Speaker 16: for their nursery that they love, to help them personalize
- 34:41Speaker 16: the nursery for their child. It will include a crib,
- 34:45Speaker 16: the bedding, a rug, wal art, a chair for the mother,
- 34:50Speaker 16: the room painted and just put together for them to
- 34:53Speaker 16: where they're ready for their baby when they come home.
- 34:55Speaker 4: Jiffer, I want to talk about this birthing center that
- 34:57Speaker 4: you've got of there. We'll get into the other things.
- 34:58Speaker 4: Is you're a regular on the show, as I said,
- 35:00Speaker 4: with family health care centers, but talk about this birth
- 35:02Speaker 4: and center. But in case people haven't heard you talk
- 35:04Speaker 4: about it in the past.
- 35:05Speaker 3: Sure.
- 35:06Speaker 17: So Family Care began almost thirty seven years ago with
- 35:09Speaker 17: four midwives that thought women should have a choice in
- 35:11Speaker 17: the way that they gave birth. Started in Putnam County,
- 35:14Speaker 17: it's grown to four counties, twenty two locations, five mobile
- 35:18Speaker 17: medical units. We service about forty schools and the birth
- 35:21Speaker 17: center has just been that's the essence of family care.
- 35:23Speaker 4: That's how we began.
- 35:25Speaker 17: So about seven years ago we moved to the second
- 35:29Speaker 17: floor of where doctor Patten's office is, or what used
- 35:31Speaker 17: to be the former Kelly Men's shop, and there are
- 35:33Speaker 17: two birthing tubs there. We have three midwives that are
- 35:36Speaker 17: on staff. We have three obgyns. So if a mother
- 35:40Speaker 17: wants to give birth in the birthing tub, or she
- 35:42Speaker 17: just wants to give birth, we have like a it's
- 35:44Speaker 17: a suite where there's a bed, there's the tub, there's
- 35:47Speaker 17: a waiting area for the family. The family can be
- 35:50Speaker 17: in the room when they give birth if they want to.
- 35:53Speaker 17: And if something does happen where all of a sudden,
- 35:56Speaker 17: we need to go to a hospital. Women's and Children's.
- 35:58Speaker 17: Is someone that has a good baseball arm, they could
- 36:01Speaker 17: throw a ball and hit Women's and Children's from the
- 36:03Speaker 17: bus center. And we just want people to know that
- 36:05Speaker 17: there are options.
- 36:07Speaker 2: All right.
- 36:07Speaker 4: We had a text here you said, can anyone register
- 36:10Speaker 4: for the nursery or only expectant parents.
- 36:12Speaker 17: I think we allow anyone to register. I mean, I
- 36:14Speaker 17: think my mother would go for me if when I
- 36:16Speaker 17: was pregnant, she would have gone.
- 36:17Speaker 4: They may know somebody, absolutely, So if somebody gets this,
- 36:22Speaker 4: then they can gift it, I guess to whoever they want,
- 36:24Speaker 4: right and you know, if they find somebody that needs it,
- 36:26Speaker 4: definitely and remind us ofeing how how you'll register during
- 36:29Speaker 4: this event?
- 36:30Speaker 1: Right?
- 36:30Speaker 4: Absolutely?
- 36:31Speaker 17: And one of the things that we just want people
- 36:33Speaker 17: to do if they want a register for this awesome
- 36:36Speaker 17: giveaway and what an incredible heart Autumn has to do this,
- 36:39Speaker 17: but we want them to just take a tour the
- 36:41Speaker 17: bus center just so that they can see what it's about,
- 36:43Speaker 17: have some interaction with the menwives, and just really see.
- 36:48Speaker 17: And I don't want to say that it's an amazing
- 36:49Speaker 17: place because that's where I work, But truly I didn't
- 36:53Speaker 17: know about it, David. I think I shared that with you,
- 36:55Speaker 17: you know, sitting on city council, I didn't know that
- 36:57Speaker 17: we had this facility that was a Charleston And I
- 37:01Speaker 17: just want so many people to understand what is available,
- 37:04Speaker 17: the options that they have, the resources that they have,
- 37:07Speaker 17: and all that we ask is that they just take
- 37:08Speaker 17: a tour the bus center.
- 37:09Speaker 4: How many you give me a ballpark figure of how
- 37:11Speaker 4: many people utilize this on a yearly basis just a
- 37:14Speaker 4: ballpark figure.
- 37:15Speaker 17: So twenty. I do know the twenty twenty four statistics
- 37:20Speaker 17: we had. I believe it was two hundred and eighty
- 37:22Speaker 17: nine berths. Now does that mean that all of them
- 37:24Speaker 17: were birthed at the Burth Center. No, because some complications happen.
- 37:28Speaker 17: But this month in April, we are expecting twenty women
- 37:31Speaker 17: to give birth at the birth center. So that would
- 37:34Speaker 17: be a record for us if there was twenty women
- 37:36Speaker 17: that gave birth that way.
- 37:37Speaker 4: Okay, I'll give you an opportunity to talk about the
- 37:39Speaker 4: other things that are going on with your company that
- 37:42Speaker 4: with family health care. So what else you got going on?
- 37:46Speaker 17: Well, one of the biggest things that we've opened right
- 37:48Speaker 17: now is called prescription Care, and that's our pharmacy. We've
- 37:52Speaker 17: opened it in the loop in Saint Albans. So we
- 37:55Speaker 17: have our convenient Care, which is our urgent care, our
- 37:57Speaker 17: regular family practice, and then we have prescription Care. What
- 38:00Speaker 17: we're noticing is that there are lots of larger chains
- 38:04Speaker 17: that are closing and people need to have access to
- 38:06Speaker 17: pharmacy or pharmaceuticals. So we have been blessed to have
- 38:11Speaker 17: a grant funding that helps people that can't afford their
- 38:14Speaker 17: medication copase. And I know that I've shared with you
- 38:17Speaker 17: my previous experience having brain tumors and my parents' mortgage
- 38:20Speaker 17: their home to keep me alive. When you have someone
- 38:22Speaker 17: that walks up to you and says, my cope is
- 38:24Speaker 17: eight hundred dollars and I can't afford that. If it's
- 38:26Speaker 17: life saving medication, I believe everyone should have a way
- 38:29Speaker 17: to live. So we've been blessed to have some medication
- 38:33Speaker 17: assistance and we're actually trying to partner with folks to
- 38:36Speaker 17: let them know that we have this funding that's available
- 38:38Speaker 17: and it's holistic care. We're doing food as medicine. We're
- 38:42Speaker 17: seeing tremendous results with people that are learning how to
- 38:44Speaker 17: cook health here with our health and community education program,
- 38:47Speaker 17: and we're seeing their A one c's lower, we're seeing
- 38:49Speaker 17: their blood pressure lower, and people are actually getting access
- 38:53Speaker 17: to fresh foods and vegetables through a Fresh Connect card
- 38:56Speaker 17: that's fifty dollars that allows them to go to a
- 38:58Speaker 17: grocery store and buy fresh freets.
- 38:59Speaker 4: One Alway's got a lot of good stuff going on.
- 39:01Speaker 4: That's what I'll do, thank you, all right, so give
- 39:02Speaker 4: us the details on this event again.
- 39:04Speaker 17: It is the Maternal Health Figure. It'll be at one
- 39:06Speaker 17: o eight Washington Street West and the Burst Center parking lot.
- 39:10Speaker 17: We'll have lots of free giveaways, we will have tours,
- 39:13Speaker 17: we will have resources for mothers and expectant mothers, and
- 39:17Speaker 17: then also talk about some opioid settlement funds that we
- 39:20Speaker 17: received for those that are either in active addiction, long
- 39:22Speaker 17: term recovery, that are pregnant or want to become pregnant,
- 39:25Speaker 17: that we have some funding to help them and their
- 39:27Speaker 17: families as well.
- 39:28Speaker 4: All right, Well, Autumn, hats off to you, as Jennifer said,
- 39:31Speaker 4: for volunteering to do this, because it's a great thing.
- 39:34Speaker 4: And I'm sure that whoever whoever gets that's that's that's
- 39:38Speaker 4: quite a substantial thing that you're doing there, So you
- 39:40Speaker 4: should be very very proud of yourself and your company.
- 39:43Speaker 4: Thanks a lot, Jennifer and On appreciate you both being here. Thanks,

- 43:07Speaker 4: A movie about hot dogs, Yes, I Love It? Premiere
- 43:10Speaker 4: Saturday night seven at the Alban Arts Center in Saint Albans.
- 43:14Speaker 4: This kind of comes on the heels. What was a
- 43:16Speaker 4: couple of.
- 43:16Speaker 20: Years ago that you and six years ago we started ago, Yes,
- 43:19Speaker 20: started during COVID. We were looking for the best West
- 43:22Speaker 20: Virginia style hot dog?
- 43:24Speaker 4: Okay?
- 43:24Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 43:25Speaker 4: How many? You and I were talking?
- 43:26Speaker 5: So?
- 43:26Speaker 4: I know you did an interview with with with the
- 43:28Speaker 4: Mountain earlier this morning.
- 43:29Speaker 2: Yes, So how many hot dogs did you get in
- 43:32Speaker 2: two hundred and eighty four over two and a half years.
- 43:35Speaker 4: Two hundred and eighty four for two and a half years, okay,
- 43:38Speaker 4: And when you came out with your list, you practically
- 43:42Speaker 4: broke the internet. We did because people were upset. They
- 43:46Speaker 4: were because you didn't choose their play.
- 43:49Speaker 2: That's correct.
- 43:50Speaker 4: And for those that missed all that, what was the
- 43:52Speaker 4: criteria for what made the best West Virginia hot dog?
- 43:55Speaker 20: Well, you had to have Slaw on your chili, I
- 43:58Speaker 20: mean on top of your dog, you know. So it
- 44:00Speaker 20: was the it was the mustard, the onion, the hot dog,
- 44:03Speaker 20: chili sauce or chili, whatever you want to call it,
- 44:06Speaker 20: top with Coleslaw. So so a lot of people are like,
- 44:08Speaker 20: where's Yans Yeans up there at That.
- 44:11Speaker 4: Was probably the one that you got the most pushed
- 44:13Speaker 4: back on. Yeah, Yans. And was there another one?
- 44:17Speaker 2: Yeah, there's just a There was a handful of others,
- 44:20Speaker 2: just the.
- 44:20Speaker 4: One that really people were that was.
- 44:21Speaker 2: The one people upset about.
- 44:22Speaker 20: I'm like, well, they don't serve Slaw because you know,
- 44:25Speaker 20: there's a line that's a Slaw line.
- 44:27Speaker 4: Apparently around Ripley somewhere in that general apparently even a
- 44:31Speaker 4: little bit higher.
- 44:31Speaker 20: Okay, okay, but it's true. But you know you can
- 44:34Speaker 20: find Slaw. So we went to the Northern Panhandles, Eastern Panhandle,
- 44:38Speaker 20: and that story about that is also in the movie.
- 44:42Speaker 20: We talk about it we talked about it quite a bit,
- 44:44Speaker 20: and yeah, we had two million people talk about in
- 44:47Speaker 20: the first forty eight hours about that list. Because we
- 44:50Speaker 20: came out with the top fifty at first, two.
- 44:53Speaker 4: Million people engaged in this.
- 44:56Speaker 2: Yeah, two and a half million over the course of
- 44:58Speaker 2: the week.
- 44:58Speaker 4: Two and a half million people for a couple of
- 45:01Speaker 4: wise guys from West Virginia.
- 45:03Speaker 2: That's correct.
- 45:04Speaker 20: Yeah, And you can find the list at half on
- 45:06Speaker 20: wv dot com.
- 45:07Speaker 2: Okay, the top one hundred.
- 45:09Speaker 20: We made at one hundred because people of nostalgia were
- 45:11Speaker 20: looking like, where's my favorite place? Like where's Stewart's, you know,
- 45:15Speaker 20: where's King Tut Where's all these other different places that
- 45:19Speaker 20: I cherished as a child. You know, it's like where
- 45:21Speaker 20: do they rank on the list? Because you don't know
- 45:23Speaker 20: anything about hot dogs? And I'm like, well, apparently, if
- 45:26Speaker 20: you don't leave your county you can try other hot dogs.
- 45:29Speaker 20: You won't really know what's the best out there unless
- 45:31Speaker 20: you try it. So we tried the entire state eight
- 45:34Speaker 20: at every place you can think of. And this movie
- 45:37Speaker 20: is a ninety minute movie about everything behind the scenes
- 45:40Speaker 20: where we went the first two and a half years
- 45:42Speaker 20: of this journey, and then what happened afterwards, like we
- 45:44Speaker 20: meet the governor, we get a proclamation about, you know,
- 45:48Speaker 20: visiting mom and pop restaurants and just to support your
- 45:52Speaker 20: local restaurants and eat a West Virginia style hot dog.
- 45:55Speaker 2: And he even says what a West Virginia style hot
- 45:56Speaker 2: dog is?
- 45:58Speaker 4: Has having known you Jay a long time, you're a
- 46:00Speaker 4: California guy, I am, yeah, But you had roots to
- 46:03Speaker 4: West Virginia right, absolutely, yes, but you were primarily California gap,
- 46:07Speaker 4: So somebody could say, what the hell does a California
- 46:10Speaker 4: guy know about West Virgina.
- 46:11Speaker 20: True, I eat a lot of hot dogs. I've been
- 46:13Speaker 20: in working in baseball for twenty one years. I started
- 46:17Speaker 20: ten years with the Sacramento Rivercats and Oakland A's affiliates.
- 46:21Speaker 20: I also worked in a restaurant industry for twelve years
- 46:24Speaker 20: prior to getting into into baseball, So I have kind
- 46:27Speaker 20: of a pretty good background for hot dogs and just
- 46:29Speaker 20: food in general. And what's to me a good taste
- 46:33Speaker 20: and a good feel of what's going on. So if
- 46:35Speaker 20: you catch out on TikTok or YouTube at half fun
- 46:38Speaker 20: WV every day, I check out new food and new
- 46:41Speaker 20: restaurants every day, supporting local places. But you know, that's
- 46:44Speaker 20: an extension of what we did back from during COVID
- 46:47Speaker 20: when we did the hot Dog Tour.
- 46:48Speaker 4: Well, oddly enough, one of the sponsors of the show's
- 46:50Speaker 4: not hot dogs, though, it's a folks at Husband's Pizza
- 46:52Speaker 4: and this month at Hustin's get a large eighteen inch
- 46:54Speaker 4: pepperoni pizza and a large toss out of twenty one
- 46:56Speaker 4: ninety nine dining pickup or get delivery a Husband'sizza dot com.
- 47:00Speaker 20: And you, folks, do you think Hussan's Pizza might make
- 47:02Speaker 20: me a hot dog pizza with the West virgin Sta
- 47:06Speaker 20: toppings on it?
- 47:07Speaker 4: All right, folks at Hustin's, are you listening.
- 47:09Speaker 2: That's a challenge, I challenge. I'll be there. I'll make
- 47:12Speaker 2: a video about it.
- 47:13Speaker 4: Colonel Ron Hughes is your hook up here for Hustin's.
- 47:15Speaker 4: That's a guy that has the account here, so colonel, Colonel,
- 47:19Speaker 4: and he'll take care of you on that. Hell you
- 47:21Speaker 4: wanted to do West Virginia hot dogs? Yeah, I get that,
- 47:24Speaker 4: but hot dogs is a lot like pizza. Depending on
- 47:27Speaker 4: where you go, they could be very different. And you
- 47:30Speaker 4: coming from the baseball background, yeah, I mean some of
- 47:33Speaker 4: these places are nuts when it comes to what they
- 47:35Speaker 4: put on hot dogs.
- 47:36Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I know that there's crazy ones, but you.
- 47:39Speaker 4: Kept it to the simple West Virginia.
- 47:41Speaker 2: Know, we wanted to try everyone's chili, everyone's slaw.
- 47:44Speaker 20: You know, each thing is unique. You know, how do
- 47:46Speaker 20: you prepare a hot dog? Is it a boiled hot dog?
- 47:49Speaker 20: Is it going to come out wet? Or is it
- 47:51Speaker 20: a grilled beef hot dog which has got maybe some
- 47:54Speaker 20: good smokes, some good grill marks on it. You know,
- 47:56Speaker 20: it makes a difference of how hot dog tastes and
- 47:58Speaker 20: how you prepare it. Is it a steam bun is
- 48:01Speaker 20: it a bunnet's on the grill that's buttered.
- 48:03Speaker 2: On one side?
- 48:03Speaker 20: I mean it's you know, there's so many different ways
- 48:05Speaker 20: to really trick a hot dog into being better than
- 48:08Speaker 20: what it should be.
- 48:09Speaker 2: And so that's what that's what the tour was about.
- 48:12Speaker 2: We found the best ones.
- 48:13Speaker 4: And I'll just tell you this, and I'm sure you've
- 48:15Speaker 4: heard this before. If you want a non restaurant hot dog, Okay,
- 48:20Speaker 4: here's what you gotta do. You got to go to
- 48:22Speaker 4: southern West Virginia. You got to look for some lady
- 48:25Speaker 4: probably by the name of Mabel or Ethel. She's got
- 48:28Speaker 4: to have coulots. You know what coolots are. Coulots are
- 48:31Speaker 4: kind of like shorts that go to the ankles. Okay,
- 48:35Speaker 4: a lot a lot of Baptist women. I grew up
- 48:37Speaker 4: in free will Baptist churches. We called it free meal Baptist.
- 48:40Speaker 4: So you gotta find that. You gotta have the glory bun,
- 48:42Speaker 4: the hair up. And that's where you'll find the best
- 48:45Speaker 4: hot dogs. And they use the serving with like a
- 48:47Speaker 4: bag of chips and a fried apple pie. Yeah, that's
- 48:50Speaker 4: there's where you got to go.
- 48:51Speaker 2: You know how many people have told me you need
- 48:52Speaker 2: to visit my church. Yeah, great hot dog. I'm like,
- 48:56Speaker 2: I need to do this.
- 48:57Speaker 4: There you get, Well, maybe you'll do that next time,
- 48:58Speaker 4: and maybe you'll get a little religion in there. Who knows.
- 49:01Speaker 2: Maybe that's the sequel.
- 49:03Speaker 4: All right, So what is next for the have fun?
- 49:04Speaker 2: Guess there will be a sequel?
- 49:06Speaker 20: But like I said, we are, you know, looking for
- 49:09Speaker 20: always the best West Virginia style hot dog.
- 49:11Speaker 2: And it doesn't have to be in West Virginia. Okay,
- 49:14Speaker 2: So I mean.
- 49:14Speaker 20: There are other places you can get West Virginia style
- 49:16Speaker 20: hot dogs. And I found a place in Myrtle Beach,
- 49:19Speaker 20: but I didn't realize this. It's actually in surf side.
- 49:22Speaker 20: There's an actual bar.
- 49:24Speaker 2: It's a West Virginia bar dedicates everything in West Virginia.
- 49:27Speaker 4: I'm aware of the sundown. I have been there, but
- 49:29Speaker 4: I went there for.
- 49:30Speaker 2: The first time. Of course they did. I had to,
- 49:32Speaker 2: and my god, it is so good.
- 49:34Speaker 4: All right, So my man Tony the Taylor onto the show. Yes,
- 49:38Speaker 4: just sent me the information on the Slaw line. It's
- 49:42Speaker 4: an actual sign near the nearest spotlightes of culinary and
- 49:45Speaker 4: cultural boundary known as a Slaw line, where it crosses
- 49:48Speaker 4: Interstate seventy nine. South of this point, West Virginians are
- 49:50Speaker 4: smart enough to order coleslaw and their hot dogs, while
- 49:53Speaker 4: north of this line people have no idea what a
- 49:54Speaker 4: real West Virginia hot dog gets.
- 49:56Speaker 2: Yes and no. He is true on that line.
- 49:59Speaker 20: However, you if you ask for it, they have slaw
- 50:02Speaker 20: and you can put it on type of your dog.
- 50:03Speaker 20: Not all restaurants have the slaw, but we found it.
- 50:06Speaker 20: We found the restaurants that did have them. And some
- 50:08Speaker 20: people don't even put have real hot dog chili. So
- 50:11Speaker 20: you go to an eastern panhandle, they have beans in
- 50:14Speaker 20: their chili. So it's kind of like, you know, you
- 50:16Speaker 20: have to explain to them what exactly is a hot
- 50:19Speaker 20: dog chili without the beans?
- 50:20Speaker 2: You know what I mean? So you can find it
- 50:22Speaker 2: out there. It's just it took a lot of work.
- 50:24Speaker 4: Tex says, if you thought about traveling across the country
- 50:27Speaker 4: and doing hot dog challenges a West Virginia hot dog
- 50:29Speaker 4: versus each state's local hot dog and am flying test
- 50:33Speaker 4: with local resid that goes back to what I was
- 50:34Speaker 4: saying Jay about my wife is originally from Chicago. A
- 50:38Speaker 4: Chicago dog is a totally different animal. They're good.
- 50:42Speaker 2: You like them. I love them, man, I don't like
- 50:45Speaker 2: them that much.
- 50:45Speaker 4: I love it.
- 50:46Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's like there's like with pizza.
- 50:48Speaker 4: You know, there's no really good or butt. I like
- 50:49Speaker 4: a good West Virginia dog.
- 50:51Speaker 20: You are you a deep dish pizza guy like Chicago
- 50:54Speaker 20: pizza gugcause I'm like a flat New York or style.
- 50:57Speaker 4: But well, what's odd is my wife, who's from Chicago
- 50:59Speaker 4: likes the flat New York styles. Okay, see yeah, but
- 51:02Speaker 4: in the Chicago pizza I know, in my hometown of Logan,
- 51:05Speaker 4: we have the great debate, you know between Parkway and Morrison's. Uh,
- 51:10Speaker 4: the two are owned by the same guys. By the way,
- 51:12Speaker 4: the same gap. The thing about a Morrison's hot Dog,
- 51:15Speaker 4: and we got to close with this is you don't
- 51:18Speaker 4: I don't put slaw on it because the sauce the
- 51:20Speaker 4: chili is so good the slaw takes away from it.
- 51:23Speaker 4: That's true, man, that's true.
- 51:24Speaker 2: It can happen.
- 51:25Speaker 4: Give us the details on the movie.
- 51:26Speaker 2: Yes, the details. It's over at the all of the theater.
- 51:29Speaker 2: It'll be Saturday, of course, this Saturday.
- 51:31Speaker 20: And to get tickets you basically have to get on
- 51:34Speaker 20: over to HALFTHUNWV dot com and try.
- 51:37Speaker 2: To get some tickets down there by signing up.
- 51:40Speaker 20: And it'll be at seven o'clock at the Aubun Theater
- 51:43Speaker 20: this Saturday.
- 51:44Speaker 2: And we're excited to have it.
- 51:45Speaker 4: Still, the big questions people are going to ask you
- 51:48Speaker 4: is are you gonna have hot dogs?
- 51:49Speaker 20: Yes, we are the number the the number one hot dog.
- 51:53Speaker 20: Boge's Drive Range will actually be serving hot dogs out
- 51:55Speaker 20: front before the movie starts. So the door's open at six,
- 51:58Speaker 20: the movies at seven, So Bogus be out there from
- 52:00Speaker 20: five th number.
- 52:01Speaker 4: One hot dog. Yes, I said, what according to your list, Yes.
- 52:04Speaker 20: But you need to really get him out there at
- 52:06Speaker 20: the driving range with a big smokers act, because things
- 52:08Speaker 20: are a little bit different when you got the smoke.
- 52:10Speaker 4: All right, the Mere at the Arts Center right there
