- 0:34colorful world of Super Mario. If you've ever played a Mario
- 0:38game or even just seen him on a T-shirt, you might know he's a
- 0:41little guy with a Red Hat and a big mustache.
- 0:44But there's a lot more to learn about Mario and his amazing
- 0:47adventures. So let's press start and explore
- 0:51everything about Super Mario. First, let's talk about who
- 0:55Mario is and where he comes from.
- 0:57Mario is a video game character created by a company called
- 1:01Nintendo. Nintendo is a Japanese company
- 1:04that started making video games a long time ago, in the 1970s.
- 1:08The first time Mario appeared was actually in a game called
- 1:11Donkey Kong, released in 1981. Back then, Mario wasn't even
- 1:16called Mario, he was called Jump Man because his main move was
- 1:20jumping. In Donkey Kong, he had to save a
- 1:23girl named Pauline from a giant ape by climbing ladders and
- 1:27jumping over barrels. After Donkey Kong, Mario got his
- 1:31own game. This game was called Super Mario
- 1:34Brothers and it came out in 1985 for the Nintendo Entertainment
- 1:37System or NES. This is the game where Mario
- 1:41became really famous. In Super Mario Brothers you play
- 1:45as Mario and your main goal is to rescue Princess Peach from
- 1:48the villain Bowser who is a big turtle like creature.
- 1:52Mario runs, jumps and stomps on enemies as he travels through
- 1:56different worlds, collecting coins and power ups along the
- 2:00way. Now let's talk about what makes
- 2:02Super Mario games so special. The first thing is the way you
- 2:06play. Super Mario games are called
- 2:08platform games. In a platform game, you move
- 2:11your character through levels by running, jumping, and climbing
- 2:15on different platforms. Imagine you are playing in a
- 2:17park and you have to jump from one stepping stone to another
- 2:20without touching the ground. That's a little like what Mario
- 2:23does in his games, except he's dodging Gumbas and Koopa instead
- 2:27of mud or puddles. Super Mario games are also
- 2:31famous for their power ups. A power up is something you
- 2:34collect in the game that gives Mario a special ability.
- 2:37One of the most famous power ups is the Super Mushroom.
- 2:41When Mario grabs a Super Mushroom, he grows bigger and
- 2:44can take an extra hit from enemies.
- 2:47There's also the Fire Flower, which lets Mario throw
- 2:50fireballs, and the Starman, which makes Mario invincible for
- 2:54a short time. In some games, there are even
- 2:56more power ups, like the Tanooki Suit, which lets Mario glide
- 3:00through the air, and the Super Bell, which turns Mario into Cat
- 3:04Mario so he can climb up walls. Did you know that Mario's
- 3:08original name was inspired by a real person?
- 3:10When Nintendo was setting up its office in America, their
- 3:13landlord's name was Mario Segal. People in Nintendo thought the
- 3:17name Mario sounded just right for their new character, and
- 3:21that's how Mario got his name. Mario doesn't go on adventures
- 3:24alone. He has a younger brother named
- 3:27Luigi who wears green and is a bit taller than Mario.
- 3:31Luigi first appeared in a game called Mario Brothers, which
- 3:34came out in 1983. Many Mario games let you choose
- 3:38to play as Mario or Luigi, and sometimes you can even play
- 3:42together with a friend. There are also other characters
- 3:45like Princess Peach, who often needs rescuing, and Toad who
- 3:48helps Mario on his quests. Let's talk about the places
- 3:51Mario visits. Most Mario games take place in a
- 3:55world called the Mushroom Kingdom.
- 3:57The Mushroom Kingdom is filled with all kinds of interesting
- 4:00places like grassy plains, underground caves, castles, and
- 4:04even haunted houses. The levels are designed with
- 4:07lots of secrets like hidden blocks, secret paths, and bonus
- 4:11rooms. Exploring these worlds is a big
- 4:14part of the fun. One of the coolest things about
- 4:17Super Mario is how it has changed over time.
- 4:19The very first Mario games were in 2 dimensions, which means
- 4:23everything looked flat, like a drawing on a piece of paper.
- 4:26In these games, you could only move left, right, up and down.
- 4:30But in 1996, Nintendo released a game called Super Mario 64 for
- 4:36the Nintendo 64 system. In Super Mario 64, Mario could
- 4:40move in all directions and the the world was 3 dimensional,
- 4:44which means it looked like you were moving around inside a real
- 4:47place. This was a huge change for video
- 4:49games, and Super Mario 64 is still remembered as one of the
- 4:53most important games ever made. Since then, Mario has been in
- 4:58many different kinds of games. There are games where Mario
- 5:01races go karts, like Mario Kart. There are games where Mario
- 5:04plays sports like tennis, golf, and soccer.
- 5:08There are even puzzle games like Doctor Mario where you have to
- 5:11match colored capsules to defeat viruses.
- 5:14Mario has also appeared in games where you build your own levels,
- 5:17like Super Mario Maker. In that game, you can make your
- 5:21own Mario levels and share them with friends or people all over
- 5:24the world. Did you know that Mario has
- 5:26appeared in over 200 different video games?
- 5:29That's more than almost any other video game character.
- 5:32Mario is not just a hero in video games, but he's also been
- 5:36in cartoons, movies, and comic books.
- 5:39In 2023, there was even a big animated Super Mario movie that
- 5:43lots of people went to see in theaters.
- 5:45Let's talk about the music in Mario games.
- 5:48The music in Super Mario Brothers is very famous,
- 5:51especially the main theme song. Almost anyone who has played a
- 5:54Mario game can recognize it. The music in Mario games is
- 5:58usually upbeat and cheerful, which matches the fun and
- 6:01exciting gameplay. The original music was created
- 6:04by a composer named Koji Kondo, who has worked on many Nintendo
- 6:08games. Super Mario games are also known
- 6:11for their creative enemies and bosses.
- 6:14Some of the most famous enemies are Gumbas, which look like
- 6:17walking mushrooms, and Koopa, which are turtle like creatures.
- 6:22Bowser, the main villain, is usually waiting at the end of
- 6:25the game and Mario has to defeat him to save Princess Peach.
- 6:29Each Mario game adds new enemies and challenges, so there's
- 6:32always something new to discover.
- 6:34Mario's world is full of things to collect.
- 6:37In most games, Mario collects coins.
- 6:40If you collect 100 coins, you usually get an extra life.
- 6:44There are also special collectibles like Power Stars in
- 6:47Super Mario 64 or Shine Sprites in Super Mario Sunshine.
- 6:52Collecting these items helps you unlock new levels and secrets.
- 6:56Did you know that Mario's jumping ability was inspired by
- 6:59the way real life athletes jump? The creators of the game wanted
- 7:03Mario to feel quick and responsive, so they studied how
- 7:06people jump and run to make the game feel just right.
- 7:09Mario's games are famous for being fun for everyone, no
- 7:12matter how old you are or how much experience you have with
- 7:15video games. The controls are easy to learn,
- 7:18but there are also lots of secrets and challenges for
- 7:21players who want to become experts.
- 7:23This is one reason why Mario has been popular for so many years.
- 7:27Let's talk about some of the most popular Mario games besides
- 7:30Super Mario Brothers and Super Mario 64.
- 7:34There are games like Super Mario Galaxy where Mario travels
- 7:37between different planets in space.
- 7:39There's also Super Mario Odyssey, where Mario explores
- 7:43big cities and new worlds with the help of his hat, which is
- 7:46actually a character named Kathy.
- 7:49Each new Mario game tries something different, so players
- 7:52always have something new to look forward to.
- 7:54Mario is also a big part of Nintendo's history.
- 7:58Nintendo uses Mario as their mascot, which means he
- 8:01represents the company. You can see Mario's face on lots
- 8:04of Nintendo products, from game consoles to toys and even theme
- 8:08parks. In 2021, Nintendo open a place
- 8:12called Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios in Japan,
- 8:16where you can walk through the Mushroom Kingdom, ride Mario
- 8:19themed rides, and even collect coins with a special wristband.

- 8:26Charles Martinet? He started voicing Mario in the
- 8:291990s, and he also does the voices for Luigi, Wario, and
- 8:33Waluigi. When you hear Mario say it's say
- 8:36me Mario, that's Charles Martin. Mario's adventures have inspired
