- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey, discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get from one full episode
- 0:37Speaker 1: of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig into
- 0:41Speaker 1: the dirt. On this bonus episode, we are talking about
- 0:45Speaker 1: this week's full episode subject our part two episode on
- 0:49Speaker 1: the Who. We are previewing the coming Nipsey Hustle rewind
- 0:53Speaker 1: episode as well as the Bruce Springsteen murder myth Madness
- 0:57Speaker 1: that's coming your way in the Disgraceland feed next week.
- 0:59Speaker 1: And you get into your voicemails, text, dms, and as
- 1:02Speaker 1: always a whole lot of rosie. All right, disc goes.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Let's get into it, all right, my friends, I am
- 1:15Speaker 1: here in the microphone. It's June eighteenth. It's Paul McCartney's birthday.
- 1:21Speaker 1: Paul has gone from at times being my favorite beatle
- 1:25Speaker 1: to my least favorite beatle, back again to my favorite beatle.
- 1:29Speaker 1: His album RAM huge part of mine in my wife's relationship.
- 1:34Speaker 1: It was one of those seminal albums during our first
- 1:37Speaker 1: few years together. I'm not sure why that kind of
- 1:40Speaker 1: thing just happens when you're falling in love, you know
- 1:43Speaker 1: what I mean. You both get sucked into certain records
- 1:45Speaker 1: and then they become symbolic of your time together. When
- 1:49Speaker 1: my wife turned thirty, actually I've mentioned this before, but
- 1:51Speaker 1: it's worth mentioning again, I hired my friend Corn to
- 1:54Speaker 1: put a band together and perform Ram the whole album
- 1:58Speaker 1: start to finish for my wife and our friends and
- 2:01Speaker 1: our family at her birthday party. Was amazing. Corn and
- 2:04Speaker 1: those guys killed it. Anyways, I love Paul. Who doesn't
- 2:07Speaker 1: love Paul. I'll always love Paul despite his ranking on
- 2:10Speaker 1: my favorite beatles at that moment. But if you want
- 2:14Speaker 1: to hear more about the time that Paul McCartney spent
- 2:17Speaker 1: in jail in Japan in nineteen eighty inside a Japanese
- 2:21Speaker 1: prison and how we survived the violent Yaquaza gangs, we
- 2:25Speaker 1: have an episode for that, all right, Matt'll pull the
- 2:27Speaker 1: show notes together for you. It's worth listening to. Just
- 2:29Speaker 1: a crazy story. No one thinks about that when they
- 2:31Speaker 1: think about Paul McCarty. They don't think that he actually
- 2:33Speaker 1: spent time in a Japanese prison. Just wild so by
- 2:38Speaker 1: Now you know that after sly Stone died last week,
- 2:41Speaker 1: Brian Wilson from the Beach Boys side right around the
- 2:45Speaker 1: same age. I think Brian was eighty two as well.
- 2:47Speaker 1: I think they're both eighty two years old. I love
- 2:49Speaker 1: Brian Wilson. Clearly, a lot of you guys love Brian
- 2:52Speaker 1: Wilson as well. Love him. I poked fun at Brian
- 2:55Speaker 1: on Instagram saying that quote Charles Manson's friend's brother died,
- 3:00Speaker 1: and a lot of you did not like that, So
- 3:04Speaker 1: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to piss anybody off too soon.
- 3:08Speaker 1: I get it. I think it's one of those things
- 3:09Speaker 1: that if I said it here in the after party,
- 3:12Speaker 1: you guys totally would have got it. But on Instagram
- 3:15Speaker 1: it pissed a lot of people off, and I took
- 3:18Speaker 1: it down. I took it down because I don't want
- 3:20Speaker 1: to rain on anyone's sadness. I get it. I totally
- 3:23Speaker 1: get it, and Brian's music means a lot to people,
- 3:27Speaker 1: and that particular joke was ill timed. However, I am irish,
- 3:31Speaker 1: I am Catholic, I am from New England, and I
- 3:32Speaker 1: am jen X and I think all those things add
- 3:35Speaker 1: up to me having a pretty dark sense of humor
- 3:37Speaker 1: when it comes to death, which is why after deleting
- 3:41Speaker 1: that Manson post, I later posted that my second favorite
- 3:44Speaker 1: beach boy tied, and that, of course prompted the question
- 3:47Speaker 1: who is my favorite beach boy? And I will take
- 3:49Speaker 1: that secret to my grave, thank you very much. I'm
- 3:52Speaker 1: just kidding. I'll tell you who it is. It's John Stamos. No,
- 3:55Speaker 1: it's not anyways, I will tell you this right around
- 4:00Speaker 1: that time when these posts were going up. This isn't
- 4:02Speaker 1: an excuse because it actually happened after but I did
- 4:05Speaker 1: suffer a concussion last week. I was away with my
- 4:08Speaker 1: family when the Brian Wilson news broke and I was
- 4:13Speaker 1: the victim of a savage Lazy River water park wave
- 4:16Speaker 1: that totally upended me, smashed the back of my head
- 4:19Speaker 1: into the cement ground. I'm okay, aside from my over
- 4:22Speaker 1: appreciation of John Stamos, however, all this bullshitting aside, I
- 4:27Speaker 1: clearly love Brian Wilson's music, and I set a version
- 4:32Speaker 1: of this on various social platforms in the past few days.
- 4:35Speaker 1: But like sly Stone, Brian Wilson was obviously a giant,
- 4:40Speaker 1: and I don't throw that word around. He was a
- 4:42Speaker 1: giant in rock and roll history and also a genius,
- 4:47Speaker 1: and I don't throw that word around either. They were
- 4:48Speaker 1: both giants. They were both geniuses. I'm supposed to begin
- 4:52Speaker 1: research next week, actually on Monday, on Buddy Hawley, finally
- 4:56Speaker 1: going to dig into the Day of the Music died
- 4:59Speaker 1: story that's been requested from the beginning, and I finally
- 5:02Speaker 1: found a way to tell it. I think that's different
- 5:05Speaker 1: from how it's been told in the past. But I'm
- 5:07Speaker 1: actually thinking of punting on that and telling a Brian
- 5:10Speaker 1: Wilson story instead, a tight thirty minute Brian Wilson episode.
- 5:16Speaker 1: We here at Double Elvis produced a full season of
- 5:18Speaker 1: Brian Wilson for our Blood on the Track series, but
- 5:21Speaker 1: I didn't write that, I didn't voice it. So I'm
- 5:24Speaker 1: asking you. I mean, right now, I'm kind of I'm
- 5:26Speaker 1: leaning towards punting on Buddy and digging into a Brian
- 5:30Speaker 1: Wilson episode. But I want to hear from you, guys.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Six one, seven, nine oh six, sixty sixty three eight,
- 5:33Speaker 1: which would you rather hear? Would you rather hear, and
- 5:35Speaker 1: these are This is coming up to quick too. This
- 5:37Speaker 1: will be it's a quick production turnaround, so this will
- 5:39Speaker 1: be out in the next like four or five weeks
- 5:41Speaker 1: something like that. Buddy Holly or Brian Wilson. I'm gonna
- 5:44Speaker 1: do both eventually. But who would you want to hear first?
- 5:47Speaker 1: All right? So we dropped our episode, our part two
- 5:49Speaker 1: episode on the Who this week. The Riverfront Colisseum tragedy
- 5:54Speaker 1: where eleven fans were crushed to death just trying to
- 5:57Speaker 1: get into a rock show. Brutal and preventable, all right.
- 6:04Speaker 1: It was rock and roll in nineteen eighty, you know,
- 6:07Speaker 1: pretty indifferent, pretty deadly. And in the research in the
- 6:11Speaker 1: production of this episode, somehow I completely missed another live
- 6:19Speaker 1: music tragedy that happened just a few months ago that
- 6:22Speaker 1: makes the Riverfront Coliseum Who Debacco look like a twisted
- 6:25Speaker 1: warm up act. I'm talking about what went down at
- 6:28Speaker 1: the jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic,
- 6:33Speaker 1: just a couple months ago, April eighth, twenty twenty five,
- 6:38Speaker 1: a full blown building collapsed during a merangue concert, killed
- 6:42Speaker 1: over two hundred people. Two hundred and thirty six people
- 6:46Speaker 1: to be exact. The second story of this building just
- 6:50Speaker 1: gave out. Okay, this wasn't a huge crowd surge like
- 6:53Speaker 1: in the Who episode. It's just I don't know, just
- 6:57Speaker 1: the roof just came down on the crowd. It's crazy.
- 7:02Speaker 1: And yeah, there was a live band playing when it
- 7:04Speaker 1: happened as well, and the venue was packed for a
- 7:06Speaker 1: party that night, live Merengue, huge crowd, lots of families.
- 7:10Speaker 1: According to the early reports, there were cracks in the structure.
- 7:13Speaker 1: There were complaints that have been filed. This wasn't like
- 7:16Speaker 1: an act of god. This was just neglect. Jet Set
- 7:20Speaker 1: apparently was a legendary club in this city, but obviously
- 7:24Speaker 1: the owners weren't taking care of this, or at least
- 7:27Speaker 1: that's the word. Okay. When it collapsed, dozens were trapped
- 7:30Speaker 1: under steel and concrete. It's bad. The details are gory.
- 7:33Speaker 1: The details are horrible. The survivors are described having to
- 7:38Speaker 1: crawl over bodies to get out dead bodies. Of course,
- 7:42Speaker 1: it's just awful. And I didn't hear about this. I
- 7:45Speaker 1: don't know how I didn't hear about it. I'm pretty
- 7:47Speaker 1: tuned in. I get notifications from Pitchfork, from Billboard, from
- 7:52Speaker 1: Rolling Stone, and I don't know how I missed this
- 7:56Speaker 1: something to be said about you know, which stories get
- 7:59Speaker 1: to us, which get remembered, which get buried literally sad stuff.
- 8:04Speaker 1: All right? What else is going on in the world
- 8:06Speaker 1: of music and true crime? Lots going on in the
- 8:08Speaker 1: Diddy trial this week, but I'm gonna get to that
- 8:09Speaker 1: a little bit later in this episode. This week, our
- 8:11Speaker 1: Rewind episode is on Nipsey Hustle, an artist whose story
- 8:15Speaker 1: is as you know, as inspiring as it is heartbreaking.
- 8:18Speaker 1: That episode's coming up next right after this bonus episode.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Speaking of dark stories, have you seen the trailer for
- 8:25Speaker 1: the new Bruce Springsteen biopic. It just dropped and it's
- 8:28Speaker 1: got people talking. I don't love it. I'm getting my
- 8:32Speaker 1: thoughts together on it. I'll talk more about it in
- 8:34Speaker 1: the future, but this is perfect timing for us to
- 8:37Speaker 1: bring back one of our classic Disgraced Land episodes on
- 8:40Speaker 1: Bruce Springsteen back by popular demand, and that's dropping on Tuesday. Okay,
- 8:45Speaker 1: And know the Springsteen episode is not the Springsteen story
- 8:49Speaker 1: that you think you're going to get if you haven't
- 8:50Speaker 1: heard this. It's not about the East Street band and
- 8:52Speaker 1: their drama. It's not about Blue collar anthems. It is
- 8:56Speaker 1: about murder and true crime, specifically the Charlie starkwa the killings,
- 9:01Speaker 1: the inspiration behind Springsteen's haunting record Nebraska, and this is
- 9:06Speaker 1: the exact period that the film delivered Me from Nowhere
- 9:08Speaker 1: deals with. I guarantee you our story is vastly different
- 9:12Speaker 1: from the story that you're going to see on the
- 9:13Speaker 1: big screen. Those murders, by the way, those stark Weather murders,
- 9:16Speaker 1: they happened in June. It's in part why we're bringing
- 9:19Speaker 1: this episode back right now. True crime, music, mythology, and
- 9:23Speaker 1: a young couple on a killing spree. This episode a
- 9:25Speaker 1: Disgraceland has got all the ingredients you need. All right,
- 9:29Speaker 1: So when you're listening to the Springsteen episode, be thinking
- 9:31Speaker 1: about songs about murder. Okay. There are a lot of them,
- 9:36Speaker 1: from Johnny Cash to Eminem to Bob Dylan, the Ghetto Boys.
- 9:41Speaker 1: There's so many. Okay, I want to know which songwriter
- 9:44Speaker 1: do you think told a true crime story best in song?
- 9:48Speaker 1: All right, call me or text me six one seven
- 9:51Speaker 1: nine oh six six six three eight with your answer.
- 9:53Speaker 1: This is gonna be the question of the week next
- 9:54Speaker 1: week or dm me at Disgraceland Pod on the socials,
- 9:58Speaker 1: I play your message or read your reply and next
- 10:00Speaker 1: week's after party. All right, I got Atlantic City suck
- 10:04Speaker 1: in my head now and I can hear my son
- 10:06Speaker 1: in the background. IM gonna go time to be quiet.
- 10:07Speaker 1: I'll be back in a flash with your voicemails, your texts,
- 10:10Speaker 1: and your answers to last week's question of the week.
- 10:34Speaker 1: All right, we are back. Apple podcast listeners, make sure
- 10:37Speaker 1: you get those auto downloads turned on so you do
- 10:39Speaker 1: not miss any episodes of Disgraceland. All right, Psyche to
- 10:43Speaker 1: be here, Psyche to be here. In the phone booth.
- 10:45Speaker 1: I'm in the phone booth. You know it's the one
- 10:47Speaker 1: over across the hall. That one there? Yes, okay, six
- 10:50Speaker 1: one seven nine oh six six six three eight. That's
- 10:54Speaker 1: how you get in touch with me. Call me, leave
- 10:56Speaker 1: me a voicemail, send me a text. Answer the question
- 10:59Speaker 1: of the week from the last episode on the Who
- 11:01Speaker 1: Part two. Question was was the Riverfront Coliseum the greatest
- 11:06Speaker 1: tragedy in rock and roll history? If not, what was?
- 11:09Speaker 1: Let's check out what the two seven us to say?
- 11:12Speaker 2: Drake two seven oh todd actually calling from the Nashville area,
- 11:18Speaker 2: worst tragedy in music history? I will go with the
- 11:26Speaker 2: Eagles of Death Metal on stage in Paris, and unbelievably
- 11:31Speaker 2: that was excuse me, that was twenty fifteen. I just
- 11:36Speaker 2: listened to a podcast with Josh Hamme talking about that
- 11:38Speaker 2: very thing. Crazy that was a decade ago. I guess
- 11:42Speaker 2: I'll go with that. But yeah, a lot of terrible things,
- 11:46Speaker 2: including the who at Riverfront back in the day. I
- 11:50Speaker 2: actually lived at that time. I was a kid, just
- 11:54Speaker 2: a little bit south of Cincinnati.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Terrible thing, Todd, great call, and yes, what an answer her.
- 12:00Speaker 1: What a horrible, horrible event. Something I'd like to I've
- 12:05Speaker 1: long wanted to cover in Disgraceland. But it's uh, I
- 12:10Speaker 1: don't know, man, it feels like it's it's too soon.
- 12:14Speaker 1: It just feels too raw, it feels too real, it
- 12:17Speaker 1: feels too fucking scary. To be perfectly honest, of course,
- 12:21Speaker 1: too soon. This is coming from the guy who had
- 12:22Speaker 1: that Brian Wilson comment last week. I don't know. Maybe
- 12:26Speaker 1: I can get there, get to it now. We'll see horrific,
- 12:28Speaker 1: horrific event, absolutely tragic, and I feel like your question,
- 12:32Speaker 1: I'm sorry your answer is is weighted even more heavily
- 12:36Speaker 1: because you're from the Cincinnati area, so thank you for
- 12:38Speaker 1: the call to I appreciate that. Let's go to Ben
- 12:41Speaker 1: in the eight oh three What's Ben Talk? Ben's talking
- 12:44Speaker 1: about obsession and this is in reference to our recent
- 12:47Speaker 1: episode on B York.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Hey Jay, this has been from the eight to three.
- 12:51Speaker 3: Once again, gott you a little cross referenceation. We're talking
- 12:55Speaker 3: about ab session in the Hollywood Land Rat Party. You
- 13:00Speaker 3: mentioned that your son was now beginning to chase that
- 13:02Speaker 3: bass tone, and like yourself as a guy who used
- 13:06Speaker 3: to meeting my living with six strings, you know it's
- 13:09Speaker 3: an ever ending obsession. Every time you think he's just
- 13:12Speaker 3: about have that tone, something's not quite there. It's like
- 13:16Speaker 3: a dragging your chasing and he's just about to grab
- 13:19Speaker 3: it by the tail and moves slightly and you're off
- 13:22Speaker 3: on an entirely different tone obsession. Having said that, we're
- 13:26Speaker 3: talking about obsessive song, how about a trio of obsessive songs,
- 13:30Speaker 3: the first of which was kind of creepy because it
- 13:33Speaker 3: was about his best friend's wife. Three of my favorite
- 13:36Speaker 3: Eric Clapton's songs are all about the same woman. One
- 13:40Speaker 3: Miss Patty Boyd Harrison clapping. He of course famously wrote
- 13:46Speaker 3: Layla about his best friend's wife. And his belonging for her.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Layer down the line, he finally gets the girl, and
- 13:54Speaker 3: with the desire to just write about it in mind,
- 13:57Speaker 3: he writes Wonderful to Night about it evening with said woman.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Then later on down the line on the Journyman album,
- 14:05Speaker 3: after There time has come to an end and they've
- 14:08Speaker 3: gone there several ways, he wrote the Lovely Old Love,
- 14:12Speaker 3: which is just a great blues that he performs with
- 14:15Speaker 3: Robert Craye. On the album, wrote that about longing for
- 14:20Speaker 3: missing his love or I miss Patty Boyd Harrison Clapton
- 14:26Speaker 3: very good, Jake. I don't know if that's qualified as
- 14:28Speaker 3: creepy obsession or not, but there you go, rock a roller.
- 14:32Speaker 1: Clapton's obsession been with George Harrison's wife with Patty Boyd
- 14:37Speaker 1: well documented in music history. Yes, there's been creepier recommendations.
- 14:43Speaker 1: But you're onto something here because this thing never sat
- 14:47Speaker 1: right with me, and part of it is like coveting
- 14:50Speaker 1: your best friend's wife. It's just it's very sleazy. I
- 14:55Speaker 1: don't like it, No one likes it. And Clapton has
- 14:59Speaker 1: this I don't know what it is. It's those seventies
- 15:03Speaker 1: years during when this obsession was at its height and
- 15:07Speaker 1: he was using heroin. He has this bleakness to him,
- 15:12Speaker 1: this darkness that I find incredibly off putting, not just
- 15:19Speaker 1: musically but personally. I know I'm in the minority here.
- 15:23Speaker 1: The Clapton stuff I like is later. It's later than Laila.
- 15:28Speaker 1: It's kind of like eighties. I know that sounds awful, right,
- 15:31Speaker 1: like the Color of Money Claptain, like the shit that
- 15:34Speaker 1: was on MTV when I was a kid that I
- 15:36Speaker 1: didn't like then. I kind of like that now cause
- 15:39Speaker 1: you can feel him coming out of that cloud he
- 15:42Speaker 1: was in and you hit it like wonderful. Tonight is
- 15:45Speaker 1: probably the beginning of that. Yeah, just totally totally obsessed,
- 15:50Speaker 1: completely obsessed. I talked about that in the Derek and
- 15:54Speaker 1: the Dominoes episode.
- 15:54Speaker 3: A little bit.
- 15:55Speaker 1: I don't nearly get into it as much as you
- 15:57Speaker 1: did here, So I appreciate that and giving me the
- 15:59Speaker 1: opportunity to to unpack it a little bit here, Ben,
- 16:01Speaker 1: thank you for the call. You know, there's this ongoing
- 16:03Speaker 1: conversation we're having about should I or should I not
- 16:05Speaker 1: do a couple of episodes on some hair metal bands.
- 16:08Speaker 1: Here's the six four.
- 16:09Speaker 4: Six here, J This is Karen in the sixty four six. Again,
- 16:14Speaker 4: I'm really late responding to the hair band call for votes,
- 16:21Speaker 4: and I don't like hair metal myself, but I think
- 16:25Speaker 4: i'd have to go with Poison. They fucking suck, but
- 16:28Speaker 4: they're also just so bad that I really kind of
- 16:31Speaker 4: want to hear that episode. I probably hate listen and
- 16:34Speaker 4: laugh my ass off. So yeah, Poison, thanks man, rockn ROLLA.
- 16:39Speaker 1: Karen love it, and I love the attitude you bring
- 16:42Speaker 1: into this potential episode. The only way I could do it. Yeah,
- 16:46Speaker 1: you're right, it's kind of got to be Poison, right,
- 16:48Speaker 1: it can't be Cinderella. It can't be skied Roll. Cinderella's
- 16:51Speaker 1: not big enough skid Row. I feel like they've got
- 16:53Speaker 1: to take themselves too serious. Seriously. They're like almost good,
- 16:56Speaker 1: you know what I mean, They're almost a good band, Poison.
- 17:00Speaker 1: I feel like Poison a highly comical b. C. C. Deville,
- 17:06Speaker 1: like I talked about before, he was along for the ride,
- 17:09Speaker 1: but he has his sense of humor that I think
- 17:12Speaker 1: is fun and we could play with. And I do
- 17:14Speaker 1: think Poison songs I do think as a weird take,
- 17:20Speaker 1: but if they were recorded by another band with different production,
- 17:25Speaker 1: that could actually be great songs. Some of them. Of course,
- 17:28Speaker 1: I don't know much beyond the singles, but I like
- 17:30Speaker 1: this idea. We'll see. I'm coming around to it. Thank you, Karen. Okay,
- 17:34Speaker 1: I gotta clean something up. I heard. I got a
- 17:36Speaker 1: text from a DM, actually from my friend Gavin van
- 17:39Speaker 1: Vlack from the great New York hardcore band Burn. He's
- 17:44Speaker 1: been in a ton of bands, but that's the one
- 17:46Speaker 1: he's most known for. Great guy, known him for years,
- 17:49Speaker 1: and he pointed out that I made a mistake in
- 17:52Speaker 1: a recent after party episode where I believe I believe
- 17:56Speaker 1: it was in the context of talking about Sick of
- 17:58Speaker 1: it All. I incorrect stated that Sick of It All
- 18:02Speaker 1: was on the hardcore compilation where the Wild Things Are,
- 18:07Speaker 1: which is wrong. They're not on that compilation. And I
- 18:10Speaker 1: think I even took it a step further and I
- 18:12Speaker 1: said that that comp came out on Revelation Records, did
- 18:16Speaker 1: not came out on Blackout Records, and the Revelation one
- 18:19Speaker 1: came out prior, and that one was called The Way
- 18:21Speaker 1: It Is. And I know all this and I can't
- 18:23Speaker 1: believe I fucked it up. It happens. I apologize. Thanks
- 18:27Speaker 1: for the DM Gavin. Appreciate you at disgracelam pod. Any
- 18:30Speaker 1: of you guys want to hit me up on DM's
- 18:32Speaker 1: STP on Instagram. Hit me up said, hey, man, where'd
- 18:36Speaker 1: you get those threads in reference to uh you know
- 18:39Speaker 1: a little little patio where I was rocking in one
